निम्नलिखित लेख में इस बात पर चर्चा की गई है कि क्या इस्लाम को सुधार की जरूरत है या नहीं. इसकी शुरुआत मेहदी हसन के इस लेख “वाइ इस्लाम डज़ नोट नीड ए रेफर्मेशन”, “क्यों इस्लाम को सुधार की जरूरत नहीं है”' से हो चुकी है. इस लेख में सुधार प्रक्रिया की शुरुआत करने के लिए एक ठोस प्रस्ताव रखा गया है। इस सुधार प्रस्तावके पक्ष में दो सदियों से आवाज उठाई जा रही है।

वास्तव में इस्लामी सुधार और खुद इस्लाम में सुधार दोनों एक वस्तु नहीं है। इसका मतलब केवल इस्लामी समाज में सुधार है। इसे ईसाइयत की तरह इस्लाम के बुनियादी सिद्धांतों को दांव पर लगाकर अंजाम नहीं दिया जाना चाहिए, बल्कि उसे आज के प्रचलित नियमों और विभिन्न रस्म व रिवाज की आलोचना, पुनर्गठन, शुद्धता और व्याख्या करके बाहर किया जाना चाहिए। यह प्रचलित नियमों और विभिन्न रस्म व रिवाज इस्लाम के सर्वभौमिक मूल्यों से बिल्कुल विपरीत हैं, और जिन्हें सामाजिक और राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर मुस्लिम समाज के भीतर और इस्लाम और दूसरे धर्मों के बीच अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक, राजनीतिक, शैक्षिक और सैद्धांतिक खाई को चौड़ा करने के लिए बनाया गया है।
