Prevention
of Terrorism Is an Unavoidable Topic for Ulama
Main
Points:
1. Islamophobia
is on the rise; what can be done to combat it?
2. The verses
and hadiths connected to war topics mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah are
relevant to the setting of a war and defence crisis.
3. The insanity
of suicide bombers is that they do not stop bombing even the mosques of Allah.
4. Terrorist
actions conducted by so-called Muslim organisations are the most widely covered
in the global media, thus reforming at this level is essential.
5. Scholars and
Ulama issue fatwas condemning terrorism and suicide attacks on a regular basis,
but terrorist acts continue.
-----
If you keep
an eye on the global situation and publications, you will notice that
Islamophobia is on the rise. Some countries are also working together to avoid
it, although they are not having much success. So the crucial question is, how
can it be stopped entirely?
We accept
that you would say that the verses and hadiths on war mentioned in the Qur'an
and Sunnah are relevant to the context of war and defence. However, when you
examine the situation in so-called Muslim countries, you will be perplexed.
Every day, somewhere, a terrorist atrocity or suicide attack occurs. The
insanity of suicide bombers is that they do not cease bombing Allah's mosques.
The most recent incident is a suicide attack on a mosque in Peshawar.
If you have
a firm grasp of the Quran and Sunnah, you can easily argue that people who
conduct terrorism, suicide assaults, and violence in the name of Islam are
violating the Quran and Sunnah. But how can those who launch such an attack and
defend it with the Qur'an and Sunnah be reformed, how should non-Muslims'
worries be addressed, and how should others who try to link Islam with the
extremist behaviour of these so-called Muslims be treated? Similarly, how can
people who make all possible attempts to promote Islamophobia in response to
these tragedies be stopped? These are the three types of people whose
reformation currently offers a challenge to the reformers and peace-loving
Ulama.
Of course,
not all Muslims are required to bear the burden of societal transformation.
Religious knowledge is essential for social transformation. In Muslim
civilization, Muslim scholars and Ulama uphold the wisdom of religious
knowledge. Common Muslims are so preoccupied with obtaining earthly nutrition
that they are uninformed of Islam's fundamental doctrines. As a result,
ordinary Muslims cannot be expected to correctly interpret Quranic verses and
hadiths. Furthermore, the Holy Quran does not hold all Muslims accountable for
the reformation of the Ummah. But at the same time, it does suggest that one
group of Muslims must struggle for reforming the Ummah.
Allah says
in the Quran:
“Let
there be a group among you who call ˹others˺ to goodness, encourage what is
good, and forbid what is evil—it is they who will be successful.” (Surah Aal e Imran: 3:104)
This verse
suggests that while it is not possible for all Muslims to engage in reformation
work, it is vital for there to be a number of Muslims who call others to virtue
and invite them to goodness. They should enforce peace and security while
prohibiting bad deeds, terrorism, and violence. Because only scholars and Ulama
have the correct understanding of good and bad behaviours, it is Ulema’s
responsibility to undertake the task of reforming people.
In the
contemporary environment, there are two categories of Ulama: Ulama-e-Haq [Ulama
of truth or honest religious scholars] and Ulama-e-Suu [Ulama of falsity or
fake scholars]. The reformation of the Muslim community falls on the shoulders
of the Ulama-e-Haq, who must reform society at all levels. Along with moral,
spiritual, and religious reform, they must also change those who do not tyre of
portraying Islam as an extreme ideology.
Because the
coverage of terrorist acts by so-called Muslim organisations is the most
extensive in the international media, it has become critical to perform
corrective work at this level.
Fatwas are
issued from time to time by Muslim scholars and Ulama against terrorism and
suicide attacks, but terrorist acts continue. In such a circumstance, it is
imperative to launch a large-scale campaign with the purpose of preventing
extremist beliefs in particular, so that the message of peace and security
prevails and terrorism is completely eradicated.
