In an
online discussion Pakistan's educationist and scientist Pervez Hoodbhoy
criticises Pakistan's education system and describes it as the worst education
system in the world. He compares Pakistan's education system with that of
Afghanistan and find's the latter better than Pakistan's. He holds the messy
state of affairs in the education departments and the corruption in the text
book boards responsible for the educational backwardness of Pakistan.
To add to
the existing problems, the Single National Curriculum, introduced by the Imran
Khan government, is meant for the merger of religious education with secular
education. Under the SNC, the students will have to learn the Quran in Arabic
with its Urdu translation; hadith in Arabic with its Urdu translation and many
prayers for every step during the day. For example, they will learn dua to be
recited before having meal, after having meal, dua to be recited while climbing
up the stairs and climbing down the stairs, and many more and this will leave
them with less time for actual learning and creative thinking. Then, this new
system proposes Islamisation of all the subjects like science, history,
English, Physics, Chemistry etc. All the subjects will be taught from an
Islamic point of view.
Pervez
Hoodbhoy says that merging the madrasa education system with secular education
system will create problems. It had been dreamt of before but could not be
realised in any Muslim country in the last 300 years because the objectives of
the two systems are radically different.
Mr Hoodbhoy
compares the educational curriculum and textbooks of Afghanistan better than
Pakistan's. He says that the progress Afghanistan's education system has made
durig the last ten years before the ascent of Taliban has lessons for Pakistan.
They have kept religious education and secular education separated and their
text books are better designed. The language, illustrations and graphics in
these text books are at par with those of India, Vietnam and Bangladesh. He
says that Bangladesh has made much progress in this field and admits that India
has surged way ahead of Pakistan in the field of education. In short, Pervez
Hoodbhoy believes that the Single National Curriculum was only a political
project of the Imran Khan government and would prove a disaster for Pakistan's
education system.
