Perform 'Yagna Of Votes' To Counter 'Vote Jihad':
Maharashtra Dy CM
Deputy
chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in Thane on Saturday
------
May 19, 2024
BHIWANDI: Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said
since citizens are not willing to vote for the "nakli" (fake) Shiv
Sena (UBT), it has been carrying out a "vote jihad" and issuing
fatwas.
During his last speech for the Lok Sabha election
campaign, Fadnavis said, "I want to tell voters that Uddhav Thackeray,
Congress and INDIA are saying they will wage a 'vote jihad' to defeat Prime
Minister Narendra Modi. In response to their 'vote jihad', I would request all
patriots to come together to give them a fitting answer by performing a 'yagna
of votes' to bring PM Modi back to power and strengthen the nation."
Fadnavis held his last campaign rally for this
election in Anjurphata area of Bhiwandi to campaign for Mahayuti candidate
Kapil Patil from the constituency.
Fadnavis said Bhiwandi was developed by Mahayuti
candidate Kapil Patil and BJP MLA Mahesh Chowghule in the past 10 years. Once
Bhiwandi was known as an underdeveloped area and its face changed after
citizens voted for BJP, he said.
Fadnavis said this was the last of his 115 meetings of
this Lok Sabha election campaign and I am confident that Mahayuti will win in
the state.
Meanwhile, in Thane, he asked former corporators to
ensure maximum votes for Mahayuti candidates in their respective strongholds
and also subtly issued a cautionary saying how their performance would be
mapped in this election which could be followed by the local body polls.

Ministry Of Awqaf In Gaza: Zionist Enemy Destroys 600
Mosques, Steals 1000 Bodies
Photo: Yemen News Agency
(SABA)
-----
18/May/2024
GAZA May 18. 2024 (Saba) - The Ministry of Awqaf and
Religious Affairs in Gaza confirmed last night that the Zionist enemy forces
completely destroyed 604 mosques and 200 were partially damaged in addition to
three churches as a result of the continuous aggression on the Strip.
The Palestinian Information Center quoted the ministry
in a statement as saying that the enemy targeted 60 cemeteries in all
governorates of the Gaza Strip.
She pointed out that he exhumed a number of them and
stole more than 1,000 bodies, of the dead and martyrs who were brutally killed,
and mutilated them.
She explained that the Zionist enemy destroyed 15
headquarters belonging to the ministry, led by the main headquarters, the
headquarters of its Holy Quran Radio, the Khan Yunis Endowments Directorate,
the Center for Antiquities and Manuscripts, the Sharia Endowments School for
Boys, and the Da'wa College "North Branch."
The Ministry of Awqaf held the Zionist enemy and its
supporters, especially the United States of America, fully responsible for the
policy of targeting mosques, places of worship, women, children and the elderly
and continuing the war of genocide.
It called on the countries of the free world,
international and UN organizations and Islamic institutions to intervene immediately
and urgently and take practical steps to stop the war of genocide and hold the
enemy accountable for its criminal practices against unarmed civilians, mosques
and places of worship.
Since the seventh of October 2023, the Zionist enemy
has launched a brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip, killing tens of thousands
of martyrs, wounded and missing, most of them children and women.

Threats Of Terrorism: Islamic State Group Issues Warnings
Targeting Cricket World Cup In US
The ICC have played down
fears of a terrorist threat to next month’s T20 World Cup
-------
By Jim Thomas
18 May 2024
Threats of terrorism loom over the upcoming 2024 T20
World Cup in New York as the Islamic State group issues warnings targeting the
cricket tournament, amplifying concerns about safety and security, the U.S. Sun
reported.
A pro-Islamic State outlet posted a video Saturday
calling for attacks at the India versus Pakistan game. The match is scheduled
for June 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Westbury, New York.
The World Cup is slated to unfold between June 2 and
29, spanning multiple Caribbean nations and U.S. states such as Florida, New
York, and Texas.
A recent report revealed that Cricket West Indies
received a terror threat from pro-Islamic State media based in Pakistan. Both
the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) have
emphasized the implementation of a rigorous security strategy to safeguard the
event.
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Keith Rowley
underscored the omnipresent risk of terrorism in the contemporary world,
emphasizing enhanced security measures during large gatherings.
"Unfortunately, the threat of terrorism in its
many and varied expressions is an ever-present danger in the world of the 21st
century," Rowley said.
Despite acknowledging the challenges in thwarting all
potential threats, authorities have remained vigilant and engaged in
collaborative efforts to secure venues and protect attendees throughout the
tournament.
The ICC and CWI have joined forces to allay
apprehensions surrounding terrorism, underscoring their unwavering commitment
to ensuring the safety and security of all involved.
Simultaneously, Europe grapples with similar threats,
particularly targeting the Champions League games in German cities including
Berlin, Dortmund, and Munich. With the looming specter of a recent attack in
Moscow, various European cities, such as Paris and London, are preparing to
bolster security measures for upcoming sporting events.
"When it comes to ungoverned spaces like Syria,
we're going to continue to stay focused, number one, on the defeat ISIS
mission, but we're also going to maintain awareness of broader regional threats
as we work with allies and partners," he added.

Once A Centre Of Islamic Learning, Historic Sprawling
Mud-Brick Mosque In Mali City Mourns Lack Of Visitors
FILE- The world's largest
mud-brick building, the Great Mosque of Djenne, Mali, awaits its annual re-plastering,
May 10, 2024.
-------
May 19, 2024
DJENNE, MALI — Kola Bah used to earn a living as a
tour guide in Mali's historic city of Djenné, once a centre of Islamic learning
known for the sprawling mud-brick mosque that has been on the UNESCO World
Heritage in Danger list since 2016.
The Grand Mosque of Djenné — the world's largest
mud-brick building — used to draw tens of thousands of tourists to central Mali
every year. Now it's threatened by conflict between jihadi rebels, government
forces and other groups.
Bah says his income was enough to support his family,
which now numbers nine children, and to pay for a small herd of cattle. But
these days, few visitors come to the city, and he has been largely out of work.
When he needs cash, he sells some of his cattle.
Speaking to The Associated Press outside his home in
Djenné's old town, Bah said locals believed the crisis would come to an end
eventually, and that business would pick up as before.
Djenné is one of the oldest towns in sub-Saharan
Africa and served as a market center and an important link in the trans-Saharan
gold trade. Almost 2,000 of its traditional houses still survive in the old
town.
The Grand Mosque, built in 1907 on the site of an
older mosque dating back to the 13th century, is re-plastered every year by
local residents in a ritual that brings together the entire city. The towering,
earth-colored structure requires a new layer of mud before the rainy season
starts, or it would fall into disrepair.
Women are responsible for carrying water from the
nearby river to mix with clay and rice hulls to make the mud used to plaster
the mosque. Adding the new layer of mud is a job reserved for men. The joyful
ritual is a source of pride for a city that has fallen on hard times, uniting
people of all ages.
"Each one of us goes to a certain spot to
supervise," he said. "This is how we do it until the whole thing is
done. We organize ourselves, we supervise the younger ones."
Mali's conflict erupted following a coup in 2012 that
created a power vacuum, allowing jihadi groups to seize control of key northern
cities. A French-led military operation pushed them out of the urban centers
the following year, but the success was short-lived.
The jihadis regrouped and launched relentless attacks
on the Malian military, as well as the United Nations, French and regional
forces in the country. The militants proclaimed allegiance to al-Qaida and the
Islamic State group.
"It was really a popular destination," he
said, describing tens of thousands of visitors a year and adding that today,
tourists are "virtually absent from Mali."
Despite being one of Africa's top gold producers, Mali
ranks among the least developed nations in the world, with almost half of its
22 million people living below the national poverty line. With the tourism
industry all but gone, there are ever fewer means for Malians to make a living.
Anger and frustration over what many Malians call
"the crisis" is rising. The country also saw two more coups since
2020, during a wave of political instability in West and Central Africa.
Col. AssimiGoita, who took charge in Mali after a
second coup in 2021, expelled French forces the following year, and turned to
Russia's mercenary units for security assistance. He also ordered the U.N. to
ended its 10-year peacekeeping mission in Mali the following year.
Goita has promised to beat back the armed groups, but
the U.N. and other analysts say the government is rapidly losing ground to
militants. With Mali's dire economic situation getting worse, Goita's ruling
junta ordered all political activities to stop last month, and the following
day barred the media from reporting on political activities.
Moussa Moriba Diakité, head of Djenne's cultural
mission which strives to preserve the city's heritage, said there are other
challenges beyond security — including illegal excavations and trash disposal
in the city.
The mission is trying to promote the message that
security isn't as bad is it seems, he said, and also get more young people
involved in the replastering ritual, to help the new generation recognize its
importance.

Under Pressure From Muslim Fundamentalists ‘Bengal
CMIs Defaming, Abusing Our Saints To Get Votes,’:PM Modi
May 19, 2024
As 48 seats go to polls as part of phase 5 tomorrow,
political leaders have now shifted their attention to the upcoming sixth and seventh
phases of the Lok Sabha elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is
addressing rallies in West Bengal today, stepped up his attack against the
ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and CM Mamata Banerjee. In a “direct
accusation”, the PM said: “West Bengal CM, under pressure from Muslim
fundamentalists, is defaming and abusing our saints and organisations to get
votes.” He was referring to the Bharat SevashramSangha, Ramakrishna Mission and
ISCKON. This comes days after Modi said that he “does not do Hindu-Muslim” and
also accused the Opposition of spreading lies over the Citizenship (Amendment)
Act (CAA), saying it is “making Hindus and Muslims fight by doing vote bank
politics”.
Earlier in Bengal’s Purulia, PM Modi targeted the
Opposition-led INDIA bloc saying, “I
have exposed the INDIA alliance leaders in front of the country. They
want to finish the Constitution, encourage the infiltrators, oppose CAA to make
their vote bank happy.” Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi addressed a rally in Uttar
Pradesh, along with his INDIA bloc ally and Samajwadi Party head Akhilesh
Yadav, in Phulpur and Prayagraj.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress
(TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee, meanwhile, claimed that the INDIA bloc will come
to power in the Lok Sabha polls and BJP will “not cross the 200 mark” in the
polls. Addressing a rally in the state’s Goghat, she accused Congress, and
CPI(M) of having entered into a nexus with BJP in the state to discredit the
state government. This comes days after she said that her party would provide
“outside support” to the Opposition alliance in case it manages to form a
government at the Centre.

Go To Pak If You Want Muslim Quota: Assam CM Himanta
Biswa SarmaTo Lalu Prasad
May 19, 2024
PATNA: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on
Saturday launched a scathing attack at RJD president Lalu Prasad over his
advocacy for "reservation to Muslims" and suggested that he should go
to Pakistan if he wants to continue with his 'principles'.
Addressing an election rally in favour of the JD(U)
candidate in Siwan, he said, "Our constitution doesn't make provision for
granting reservation to the people along religious lines, but Lalu says Muslims
too should be given reservations. We want to tell Lalu that Hindus have
awakened now. Reservation can't be granted along religious lines, but still, if
he wants to do that, he must go to Pakistan. It will never happen in
India."
Citing examples from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the
Assam CM alleged that such measures came at the expense of other backward
classes. "Karnataka's decision to grant reservations to Muslims was done
after robbing the reservations of Backward classes," he claimed.

Social engineering between MVA and Muslims successful,
says Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh
May 18, 2024
MUMBAI: Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh on Saturday
said that the 'social engineering' experiment between Muslims and
MahavikasAghadi (MVA) for the Lok Sabha elections has proven successful and
will ensure the victory of MVA candidates in Mumbai and Maharashtra. The SP
workers will be fully active in the next two days to boost voter turnout on May
20, Shaikh added.
Shaikh said that the entire Muslim community is firmly
supporting the INDIA Alliance and MVA candidates in the Lok Sabha election. “We
are part of the INDIA Alliance. SP workers are actively campaigning for MVA
candidates. I, along with SP workers, visited Shiv Sena (UBT) shakhas in the
Byculla area. Both Shiv Sainiks and Muslim leaders also chalked out and
executed the campaign strategy for Arvind Sawant, the Sena (UBT) candidate from
South Mumbai,” said Shaikh.
The MVA is looking to prevent the division of minority
votes by Muslim candidates put up by the AIMIM and VBA in Mumbai. While the
AIMIM has not fielded any candidate in South Mumbai, the VBA has fielded Afzal
Shabir Ali Dawoodani from South Mumbai. Also Shuaib Khatib, who is trustee of
the Jama Masjid in the city, took a plunge into active politics by filing his
nomination for Mumbai South on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket. “The SP has
significant presence in some seats like South, North Central and North East. So
this attempt to integrate SP’s Muslim workers with Sena (UBT) will help the MVA
prevent division of Muslim votes,” said a political observer.

Iranian rapper facing the death penalty after calling
out Islamic Republic
By NassimKhadem
19-05-2024
In a country where criticising the government can get
you killed, ToomajSalehi has remained fearless.
The Iranian rapper from Isfahan cannot perform
concerts or speak freely in his country, but he still gets hundreds of
thousands of streams per song on his YouTube channel.
His music has been compared to that of other hip hop
greats like Kendrick Lamar, all while producing and releasing songs in a
country where rap is illegal.
While other Iranian artists use pseudonyms to avoid
attracting the attention of the conservative regime, 33-year-old Salehi has
never hidden his identity - even as he openly criticises the government for its
human rights abuses.
Salehi's music - reportedly inspired by the late
American artist Tupac Shakur, who also rapped about inequality and injustice -
highlights what he sees as the Islamic Republic's failures and hypocrisies.

Iran sentences to death a Jewish man who killed a
Muslim
ItamarEichner
19-05-2024
Arvin Nathaniel Ghahremani, a 20-year-old Iranian Jew,
is scheduled to be executed in Iran on Monday for allegedly killing an Iranian
Muslim in a brawl in self-defense.
In Iran, it was reported that Ghahremani was involved
two years ago in a brawl with a non-Jewish Iranian. During the brawl, the
Iranian died, and the Jewish citizen was sentenced to death.
According to Iranian law, the death sentence can be
commuted to reparations only with the consent of the deceased person's family.
The family and the Jewish community have offered a generous amount for
reparations, but the victim's family refuses to accept the offer and demands
the Jewish man's execution.
The execution was planned for Saturday, but for
unknown reasons, it has been postponed to Monday. Several figures have appealed
to different countries so they can intervene and help suspend the execution.
Appeals have been made to countries like Russia, Germany, and more.

Israel hits new parts of Northern Gaza; recovers
remains of slain hostage
May 19, 2024
CAIRO/JERUSALEM: Israeli troops and tanks pushed on
Saturday into parts of a congested northern Gaza Strip district that they had
previously skirted in the more than seven-month-old war, killing and wounding
dozens of Palestinians, medics and residents said.
Israel's forces also took over some ground in Rafah, a
southern city next to the Egyptian border that is packed with displaced people
and where the launch this month of a long-threatened incursion to crush
hold-outs of Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas has alarmed Cairo and
Washington.
The Israeli military said its air forces hit more than
70 targets across the Gaza Strip while ground troops conducted "targeted
raids" in eastern Rafah, killing 50 militants and locating dozens of
tunnel shafts.
In what Israeli media said was the result of
intelligence gleaned during the latest incursions, the military announced the
recovery of the body of a man who was among more than 250 hostages seized by
Hamas in a cross-border rampage on Oct 7 that triggered the war.

religion and contemporary sciences, stating, “Religious beliefs and logic are
two aspects of societies; unfortunately, in European communities, the bond

The Vilification Of Muslims in UK Engaging With
Politics Over Gaza Must Stop
By Adeeb Daniels
19-05-2024
LABOUR’S performance at the local elections in England
was undeniably a success. The party of Sir Keir Starmer won 186 council seats
and now holds a total of 1158, whereas the Tories lost 474, finishing with just
515.
One demographic that has, by and large, historically
voted for Labour decisively distanced itself this time: British Muslims.
According to one analysis, in 58 council wards where above one in five voters
identify as Muslim, “Labour’s share was 21% down on 2021, the last time most seats
were contested”.
Muslim activists, influencers and civil society bodies
have explained with one voice why they rejected Labour – the party’s dismal
record on Gaza and specifically its refusal to support calls for an immediate
ceasefire until February.

Italy cracks down on cars assembled in Morocco
May 19, 2024
Italy's financial police seized dozens of Fiat
Topolinos which they said carried the Italian national flag on units actually
assembled in Morocco, in the latest fight between GiorgiaMeloni's government
and the carmaker.
The vehicles were blocked at the port of Livorno for
alleged violations of the so-called "Made in Italy" law, which
already forced Stellantis to rebrand its Alfa Romeo Milano sports car to
Junior. A spokesman for Stellantis confirmed the seizure, which was first
reported by Italian media.
Italy's govt is at loggerheads with Stellantis
following plans to cut jobs in the country and move production to lower-cost
nations. Stellantis says it will remove a small Italian flag sticker on the
cars, which it added because the Topolino project was developed in Turin,
Italy.

The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan media organization that informs
Texans — and engages with them — about public policy, politics, government and
statewide issues.
A national Muslim advocacy group is suing Gov. Greg
Abbott for singling out pro-Palestinian student groups and critics of Israel on
Texas college campuses over his March executive order that aims to take
stricter action against acts of antisemitism.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations argues that
Abbott’s order violates the First Amendment and falsely equates advocacy for
Palestinian liberation – through slogans like “From the River to the Sea,
Palestine will be Free” – to antisemitism. The organization is filing the
lawsuit on behalf of Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of
Houston, Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Texas at
Dallas, and the Democratic Socialists of America.

Dominican Republic's vote is dominated by Haiti crisis
May 19, 2024
SANTO DOMINGO: Dominican President Luis Abinader is
poised for comfortable reelection Sunday on the back of widespread support for
his tough stance on migration from troubled neighbor Haiti.
The two nations share the Caribbean island of
Hispaniola, but the more prosperous Dominican Republic stands in stark contrast
to its chaos-plagued neighbor, which has been rocked by months of gang
violence.
The volatility across the border has been a key issue
in the election campaign, but Abinader, 56, also boasts success in managing the
economy and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Polls show him leading closest rival Leonel Fernandez
-- a 70-year-old three-time ex-president -- with 60 percent of voter support
compared to 25 percent.

'Loser' vs 'worst president': Biden and Trump indulge
in war of words before US elections
May 19, 2024
NEW DELHI: In a fiery speech to the National Rifle
Association in Dallas, Donald Trump launched a fiery attack on President Joe
Biden, calling him "the worst president in the history of our country by
far" and branding him as "full of bullshit."
Trump, who received the endorsement of the influential
gun rights group, told the crowd that Biden was coming for their firearms and
suggested that if he (Biden) were a Republican, he would be given the electric
chair.
"You're fired, get out of here, Joe!" Trump
exclaimed to laughter from the pro-gun crowd. Trump, who is dealing with
multiple criminal indictments for attempting to overturn the 2020 election
results and was twice impeached as president, described Biden as
"crooked" and a "threat to democracy." He claimed that if
Biden were a Republican, he would be "given the electric chair."
Meanwhile, Biden campaigned in the crucial swing state
of Georgia, warning supporters that his "unhinged" opponent poses a
threat to American democracy.

South Africa: Jacob Zuma launches new party manifesto
19-05-2024
Former South African President Jacob Zuma on Saturday
lamented the high levels of poverty amongst Black South Africans and promised
to create jobs and tackle the scourge of crime as he launched his new political
party's manifesto ahead of the country's much anticipated elections.
He told thousands of supporters who gathered at
Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg that his party would build factories where many
South Africans would be employed and provide free education for the country's
youth.
He has also pledged to change the country's
Constitution to restore more powers to traditional leaders, saying their role
in society has been reduced by giving more powers to magistrates and judges.

Zuma takes election battle cry to ANC’s heartland
Farouk Chothia
19-05-2024
South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma put on a
show of strength in the historic township of Soweto as he campaigned for votes
in the build-up to the 29 May general election.
Zulu warriors marched around Orlando Stadium with
their spears and shields, men in camouflage sang and danced to revolutionary
songs, while some of South Africa's famous singers - including rapper Big Zulu
- provided entertainment to the near capacity crowd at Saturday's rally.
Having announced his resignation from the governing
African National Congress (ANC) last week, he has now joined the former
president's new party, uMkhontoweSizwe, which translates as Spear of the
Nation.
The crowd burst into chants of "Zuma, Zuma"
as he walked into the stadium, while his increasingly influential daughter,
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, knelt in front of him and hugged him before he took his
seat on the stage.
She serves on what is called the "national
core" of the party, recently telling The Shady PHodcast: "My father
is obviously the head, and I'm the neck."
Mr Zuma's decision to hold his biggest campaign rally
in Soweto was significant because it is a stronghold of the ANC in South
Africa's economic heartland of Gauteng.
Soweto also has deep political symbolism as it was at
the forefront of the struggle against the racist system of apartheid, which
ended with the ANC's rise to power in 1994.
But now, 30 years later, the ANC risks losing its
outright majority as it faces a threat from Zuma's breakaway party, as well as
other opposition parties.
Addressing voters on Saturday in Mandeni town, about
100km (62 miles) from the coastal city of Durban, Mr Ramaphosa said creating
jobs was his priority, warning "small parties" like MK - the acronym
by which Mr Zuma's party is known - that they were looking down on the ANC at
their peril.

How aggrieved family member set Kano mosque ablaze,
killed 15
FanenIhyongo
May 18, 2024
The blast from the mosque sounded like a bomb, but it
was not an improvised device or a detonated nuclear weapon.
Thirty-two persons were in the mosque located in
Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, observing their early morning
prayers on Wednesday when Abubakar set the holy place ablaze.
The culprit had timed and struck as the worshippers
were bowing down and praying to Allah (God). They had neither a threat signal
nor a premonition of an attack on them. So, with the doors already locked, they
could only grope helplessly when the flames of fire and smoke engulfed the
mosque.

PTI rejects call for settling ‘meddling’ issue out of

ISLAMABAD: Criticising a suggestion by Adviser to the
Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah that the issue of
six judges’ letter regarding meddling in judicial affairs should be settled out

Meanwhile, the PTI condemned the government for its

urging the state to reassess its priorities and develop a strategy to find a
durable and permanent solution to the issue.
The spokesperson expressed grave concern over the

Pakistani students flee Kyrgyzstan after mob attacks

ISLAMABAD: After a mob attack left several
international students, including Pakistanis, injured in Kyrgyzstan’s
capital Bishkek, Pakistan on Saturday summoned Kyrgyz envoy MelisMoldaliev to
the Foreign Office and demanded “all possible measures” for the protection of
the students, with the embassy asking them to remain indoors till de-escalation
of the situation.
On the other hand, as many as 140 Pakistani students,
stuck in Bishkek, arrived in Lahore on Saturday night, according to an interior
ministry’s spokesperson.
According to reports reaching here through various
sources, videos of a fight between Kyrgyz and Egyptian students on May 13 went
viral on Friday, provoking an unruly group of protesters to attack hostels of
medical universities where a large number of Pakistanis and students from
other countries reside. Besides, private residences of foreign students also
came under attack.
Unverified social media posts also reported the
incidents of mob violence at the hostels housing foreign students in Bishkek,
along with the footage and imagery, with many appealing to the relevant
authorities to send immediate help. According to the Kyrgyz health ministry,
four Pakistanis were provided first aid and discharged while one is under
treatment for a jaw injury.
However, reports cited Kyrgyzstan authorities as
saying that the situation was under control, but Pakistani students were
advised to stay indoors until the situation became completely normal.

Sher Afzal Marwat moves IHC against deputy PM

May 19, 2024
ISLAMABAD: Sher Afzal Marwat, a PTI member of National
Assembly, on Saturday challenged the appointment of Senator Ishaq Dar as deputy
prime minister before the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The petition, filed through Advocate Riaz Hanif Rahi,

foreign affairs when the cabinet division issued a notification on April 28
with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s approval for his appointment.
It argued that PM Office was a constitutional office
but the post of deputy premier was not known in the Constitution and no other

Report: PM Anwar urges US to halt arms supply to
Israel, end Palestinian conflict
By AnisZalani
19 May 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar
Ibrahim urged the United States (US) to cease supplying weapons to Israel and
to use its significant global influence to end the conflict with the
Palestinians.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera today, he
said the actions of some Western countries are deemed hypocrites for preaching
human rights and democracy while condoning atrocities against innocent
populations.
“I think the international community made it very
clear that authorities and governments, including the US, should do whatever it
can for a complete cessation of hostilities and stop the war.
“Such rhetoric is quite subtle at times, but the
actions seem to be on the contrary, and that’s why I see sometimes most
countries in the West are being quite hypocritical between their lectures on
human rights and democracy, but at the same time condoning, if not tolerating,
this atrocity against an innocent population,” he said an interview with Al
Jazeera today.
Responding to a question by Talk to Al Jazeera host
Sami Zeidan whether he sees Israel as a “colonial apartheid state”, he said
that it is clear that Israel is an apartheid state, citing their actions
against Palestinians and their control over Palestinian territories as
evidence.

Pope says tension and debate are inevitable, embrace
them
18 May 2024
VERONA, Italy, May 18 — Arguments and tensions are
inevitable in modern society and should not be brushed under the carpet, Pope
Francis said today, warning that trying to impose a uniform vision fostered
frustration and violence.
Addressing a peace gathering in a Roman amphitheatre
in the northern Italian city of Verona, the pope said people needed to learn
how to deal with conflict before it got out hand, but also recognise that
holding different opinions was healthy.
“A society without conflicts is a dead society. A
society that hides conflicts is a suicidal society. A society that takes
conflicts by the hand is a society of the future,” the pope told some 12,500
people gathered in the ancient arena.
It was the pope’s second day trip to northern Italy in
three weeks, following his visit to Venice last month, testing his stamina
after repeated ailments over the past year that have sometimes forced him to
curtail his public appearances.
As is now normal, the 87-year-old pontiff got around
by wheelchair and appeared in good form as he first met priests and children in
the city, before attending the open-air peace conference then having lunch in a
local jail with prisoners.
