Brunei Islamic Film Festival Kicks Off To Explore The
Concept Of Film Genre

March 13, 2022
The Brunei Islamic Film Festival kicked off with a
symposium titled ‘Islamic Film Genre: Questions, Possibilities and Implications
for the Bruneian Screen Industry’ at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah
Complex yesterday.
Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Hajah Nurul Amal
Munjiatul Athirah binti Pengiran Sura Negara Pengiran Anak Haji Muhammad Bey
Muntassir was the guest of honour.
Symposium participants comprised individuals from
higher learning institutions including Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali
(UNISSA), Mahakarya Institute of the Arts Asia (MIAA) and Kolej International
Graduate Studies (KIGS) as well as filmmakers and officials from production
houses and government agencies.
Festival Director Siti Kamaluddin opened the symposium
with a speech describing her excitement over the Sultanate’s first-ever film
festival dedicated to Islamic content.
“In 2019, we introduced the Islamic film competitive
category as part of the annual Brunei Film Blitz, and the category has since
grown. But this year, it has become its own festival,” she said.
Being a firm believer in the importance of education,
research and study, Siti Kamaluddin said, “This is why the festival is starting
with a symposium, which will allow participants to explore the concept of film
genre, and what it means to have an Islamic Bruneian screen identity.”
Matters pertaining to Islamic etiquette, halal food
preparation, Islamic financing and insurance were discussed in greater detail
to ensure filmmakers delve into these details when producing Islamic content.
The symposium ended with a filmmaking workshop
allowing participants to put into practice what had been discussed at the
symposium. Participants were assigned filmmaking exercises on ideation,
cinematography, sound recording and editing.
Intensive individual mentorships will be made
available for participants over the next two weeks while they produce Islamic
short films to be screened on March 30.

Acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of
Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi asked the International Community to do their
part in building a stable and self-reliant Afghanistan as an unstable and weak
Afghanistan avail no one.
Amir Khan Muttaqi insisted that Afghanistan does not
intend to be a country for conflicts of superpowers of the world.
Speaking at Antalya’s Diplomatic Forum in Turkey on
Saturday, March 12, 2022, the acting Minister said that the US along with its
allies could not defeat ISIS-K in Afghanistan but the Taliban uprooted the
terror group from the country.
He attacked the current definition of diplomacy
claiming to be used for waging and intensifying wars across the world. Muttaqi
said the definition should be looked at honestly so that it be used for the
prevention of wars and conflicts.
“Many opportunities have been created in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has the potential to be a connecting and transit spot between
central and south Asian countries. We ask participants of the Diplomatic Forum
to assist Afghanistan in getting its assets unfrozen and economic sanctions
lifted.” Muttaqi said.
The acting FM further added that Afghanistan has no
political asylum seeker and all who have left Afghanistan is owing to economic
issues. Amir khan Muttaqi said all Afghans in exile will return to the country
once the country’s economy gets going.

IN any war, one major tactic is to exploit your adversaries’
weakness. Our monopoly of controlling the air space gives us a fighting

However, it may be inaccurate for us to conclude that

Karnataka Man Attacks Wife 23 Times With Weapon,
Right-wing Groups Call it Case of 'Love-Jihad'
MARCH 12, 2022
Aman from Karnataka’s Gadag brutally attacked his wife
and left her battling for life in a hospital, days before their divorce
petition hearing was to come up in a court.
Police said that the inter-religious marriage of the
couple had hit a rough patch when Apoorva Puranik alias Arfa Bano had learnt
about the first marriage of her husband Ijiaz.
Apoorva, who was studying MBA in Hubli, fell in love
with Ijaz who was an auto driver in the area where she lived. The couple got
married in 2018, despite opposition from the girl’s family. Apoorva changed her
name to Arfa Bano after the wedding. The couple has a two-year-old child.
Around six months ago, Apoorva learnt about Ijaz’s
first marriage. According to police, this led to several heated arguments
between the two. Heartbroken, Apoorva applied for a divorce and the petition
was to come up for a hearing on Friday. But the estranged husband attacked
Apoorva on Wednesday in Gadag, assaulted her 23 times with a lethal weapon. She
is now battling for her life at KIMS hospital in Hubli. The police have
arrested Ijaz.
Apoorva’s mother Ashwin said her daughter was studying
in Hubli and when she and Ijaz got their marriage registered. “He would assault
her often. We opposed the marriage but thought they will live happily. We
didn’t know about his first marriage. When she got to know, she filed for a
divorce. He had converted our daughter before marriage and changed her name to
Arfa. He wanted her to not ask for a divorce, he would ask her to live the way
he wanted," said.
Meanwhile several right-wing groups and chief of Sri
Ram Sene, Pramod Muthalik, have called it a case of Love-Jihad. “This is the
latest example of Love-Jihad. Marrying innocent Hindu women and then torturing
or converting them is happening everywhere. We welcome the prompt action of the
police to arrest him. But they have booked him under not so stringent sections.
If he comes out of jail, we will thrash him. We demand stringent sections to be
slapped against the culprit,” Muthalik said.
