--------------
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended
Eid-ul-Adha greetings to the people and called for harmony and unity in the
society.
"Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha! May this special
occasion further cement the bonds of harmony and togetherness in our society.
May everyone be happy and healthy," Mr. Modi said on X.
Mosques and several religious sites across the country
on Monday were thronged by the devout who gathered to offer namaz on the
auspicious occasion.
Much of Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India and
Bangladesh, observed Eid ul-Adha on Monday, while Muslims in other parts of the
globe, including Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen celebrated the holiday
on Sunday.
Eid ul-Adha commemorates the Quranic tale of Ibrahim’s
willingness to sacrifice Ismail as an act of obedience to God. Before he could
carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram as an offering. In the Christian
and Jewish telling, Abraham is ordered to kill another son, Isaac.

Muslim Student From University Of Illinois
ChicagoCalls America ‘Cancer’ In Viral Video, Netizens Say ‘Leave And Never
Come Back’
By Sumanti Sen

Muslim student from UIC calls America ‘cancer’ in
viral video (@MEMRIReports/X)
------------
A Muslim student from the University of Illinois
Chicago has come under fire for saying that America, the American government,
and democracy are cancers.
Nusairat's LinkedIn profile says that he is pursuing
Bachelor of Science - BS, Data Science with a Concentration in Computer Science
at the university. He said at the recent sermon at the university’s MSA –
Muslim Students Association that, “America is the cancer. America, the American
government, secularism, democracy, capitalism, these are cancers that have
spread their illness all over the world – in America and in the Middle East. In
America, over here, people have the freedom to – again, as I've said before –
commit zina [fornication] but when you speak up, it's a problem.”
3.6 Crore Indians visited in a single day choosing us
as India's undisputed platform for General Election Results. Explore the latest
updates here!
"Now Muslims are tired of this cancer. They're
tired of the American government. They're tired of democracy. They want to see
a new way of life. And as Muslims, we have to understand, that we have that new
way of life,” he also said.
He added, “"[The Messenger] was sent as a mercy
for all of mankind. He was sent as a mercy. Why? Because the way of life he
brought, will bring that mercy. The way of life he brought, will bring that
tranquility, to Muslims and non-Muslims. Non-Muslims won't have to worry about
the issues they worry about now. You won't have to. Because Islam is a just
religion that has come to be implemented upon society."
Nusairat’s speech, which went viral on social media,
has drawn a lot of criticism. In the above video, one user commented, “Leave
then. We don’t want anybody in the U.S. that hates our country. Leave and never
come back.” “His scholarship and student visa (if he has one) needs to be
revoked immediately,” one user said, while another remarked, “Why will someone
tired of America be living in America? does anyone know why?”
“If they can’t adjust to the American way, to its laws
and rules, those that are not comfortable living in the USA, they must be ship
out to their corresponding countries where they came from. As simple as that.
If they don’t agree, they must be ship out,” wrote one user, while another
wrote, “I want them to go far away and leave us alone!” One said, “They should
move back to where they came from”.
The same video also features student Musab Kazi, who
said in an April 26, 2024, sermon at the UIC MSA that the liberation of
Palestine will not be at the hands of America, congressmen, or senators, but
instead at the hands of the Muslim nation. He went on to say that "Muslims
of strength," who are capable of saving Masjid Al-Aqsa "from the
hands of the "oppressors" are "sitting in front of me right now
in this room."

Hezbollah bigger challenge than Hamas to Israel:
‘Crown jewel in the Iranian empire of terror
By Benjamin Weinthal

--------------
JERUSALEM — With Israel on the verge of a third
full-blown war against Hezbollah because of the Lebanese organization’s
constant firing of deadly missiles, drones and rockets, the differences and
similarities between Hezbollah and Hamas are now under the microscope.
The Islamic Republic of Iran finances the Mideast
terrorist movements Hamas and Hezbollah, who have declared war on Israel and
who are also responsible for committing numerous terrorist attacks against
American civilians and military service personnel.
Fox News Digital contacted experts for a
tale-of-the-tape analysis on Hamas, which is situated in the southern Gaza
Strip, and Hezbollah, which is the de facto ruler of the Lebanese state on
Israel’s northern border. Israel has fought two wars against Hezbollah, in 1982
and in 2006.
"Hezbollah is the crown jewel in the Iranian
empire of terror and evil and is by far the most powerful Iranian proxy
equipped with nation state capabilities and even with more firepower than
several European militaries have today," Jonathan Conricus, senior fellow
at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a former IDF spokesman told
Fox News Digital.
Despite widespread poverty and economic instability in
Iran, the Islamic Republic is also a generous funding source of Hezbollah,
providing the Lebanese terrorist organization with over $700 million a year,
according to the Israel Defense Forces and the U.S. State Department. Joint
military cooperation between Iran’s regime and Hezbollah has been a
longstanding feature in Lebanon, Syria and throughout Europe with respect to
terrorism and war planning.
"In a military comparison, Hezbollah is far more
powerful than Hamas across the board in every military metric. In terms of the
amount of rockets they have, the range, the accuracy or the payload or size of
the warhead, also in terms of the amount of personnel, armed fighters, their
training and their equipment," Conricus added.
Hezbollah has amassed a massive arsenal of an
estimated 150,000 rockets and missiles that are aimed at the Jewish state. The
IDF has degraded Hamas’ supply of 20,000 rockets and missiles since the start
of the war. However, Hamas was capable of launching eight rockets from the city
of Rafah into Israel two weeks ago. Fox News Digital reported last week that
Hezbollah launched over 200 missiles, rockets and drones into Israel.
"Hezbollah and Hamas are both terror
organizations funded mainly by Iran. Hezbollah’s loyalty is only to Iran. Hamas
is for everyone who helps it," said Edy Cohen, a Lebanese-born Israeli
scholar of Hezbollah.
Cohen, a researcher at the Eitan, the Israeli Center
for Grand Strategy, said "Hamas is under a sea blockage and cannot fly to
other countries and cannot receive goods or arms easily. Hezbollah can."
The number of terrorists fighting for both
organizations varies. The IDF has reduced Hamas’ terrorist force by nearly 50%
since the start of the war to between 9,000 and 12,000 combatants.
"Under the guidance of Hezbollah leader Hassan
Nasrallah, the group boasts a troop strength of 20,000 to 25,000 full-time
fighters, with additional tens of thousands in reserves," the IDF wrote on
its website. "Hezbollah's elite Radwan Unit is particularly noted for its
combat proficiency and strategic importance in conflicts across the region. This
particular unit … was established with assistance from Iran’s Quds force."
Walid Phares, co-president of #EducateAmerica and a
professor of Middle East Studies, told Fox News Digital the first principal
difference between Hamas and Hezbollah is "Hamas comes from the Muslim
Brotherhood organizationally and ideologically, so it is a Sunni extremist
group, a chapter of Ikhwan among many chapters in the region."

to mark the anniversary of the 2014 war with Israel near the border in the
central Gaza Strip July 19, 2023. (Reuters/Ibraheem Abu Mustafa/File Photo)
He added that "Hezbollah comes from an opposite
side. They are Shiites, but Jihadi Shiites, made of Lebanese Shia Islamists who
have been recruited (and funded) by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, or the
SepahPasdaran as early as 1980. They were launched by the Islamic Republic in
northern Bekaa that year and marched south all the way to the southern suburb
of Beirut and then to the south after Israel started to withdraw."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the IDF
Gibor base in KiryatShmona, where he was briefed by 769th Brigade Commander
Avraham Marciano and Northern Command Home Front coordinator Brig.-Gen. (Res.)
Alon Friedman June 5, 2024. (Israeli Government Press Office)
Phares, co-host of the popular "War and
Freedom" podcast, said Hamas’ "ultimate goal is to destroy Israel,
establish a Taliban-like emirate or state in Palestine, but, more importantly,
have that Islamic entity join a new Caliphate across the region. Hamas as such
is not a ‘nationalist’ group, but a Pan-Islamist organization."
In contrast to Hamas, Phrase noted that Hezbollah
believes "in exactly the doctrine of the Iranian regime. That is to
establish a Khomeinist republic in Lebanon to join the sister Islamic Republic
in Iran, and also in Iraq and Yemen, and eventually form a ‘parallel’ Shia
Khomeinist (Jihadist) type of Caliphate, known as Imamate, Shia Islamists
reject the Sunni Caliphate."
The Islamic revolutionary Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini
founded the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979, with a mission to export his Shia
Islamism across the world.
"So, they are at polar opposites ideologically,
how did they come together and what is common between them. What is common is,
first, that they both want to destroy the Zionist entity [Israel]. That’s the
ultimate joint goal. Then, they both want to bring down all Arab regimes who
are with peace or are obstructing their jihad. They are both enemies of
America," Phares said.

The Iranian regime's financing of both terrorist
movements is a crucial factor, according to Mideast experts, in understanding
jingoism in the region and the destabilization of the Levant and the Islamic
heartland in the Middle East.
Qatar hosts the Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh,
who told the Qatari-owned Al Jazeera network in 2022— two years before Hamas
launched its Oct. 7 invasion into southern Israel — that Tehran funnels at
least $70 million to Hamas each year.
Counterterrorism expert Bruce Hoffman also noted in a
June 14 article on the website of the Council of Foreign Relations that
"some five hundred Hamas fighters were trained in Iran in preparation for
the October 7 attacks, a reflection of Iran’s longstanding support of
Hamas."
Phares explained that Hamas and Hezbollah came
together in 1994-1995 when "hundreds of Hamas cadres and leaders were
exiled by Israel to south Lebanon. They were hosted by Hezbollah, who linked
them up with the regime in Tehran. They were received, funded and armed. They
were told the two Jihadisms can work together despite the Sunni and Shia
divide. "

football stadium May 24, 2021, in Gaza City, Gaza. (Laurent Van der Stockt/Getty Images)
He said Hamas embraced the Shia side to the
"point that in 2011 they eventually sided with [Syria President Bashar]
Assad's (pro-Khomeinist) regime against Sunni Salafi Jihadi factions. That was
a major crisis for Hamas, accused by Sunnis of betraying them. But, eventually,
when Assad regained ground in Syria, and the Islamic Regime shifted the fight
to Gaza, Hamas regained ‘Jihadi notoriety’ in the region."
"Strategically speaking, Hezbollah is currently
enjoying a situation where it has Israel exactly where it wants it. And Israel
has indeed achieved quite a lot of military achievements. But, on the strategic
level, Hezbollah is benefiting from an attrition in Israeli capabilities and
from a very challenging diplomatic situation," Conricus, the former IDF
spokesman, noted.

video link as his supporters raise their hands during the Shiite holy day of
Ashoura in the southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, Aug. 9, 2022. (AP

"As long as the international community fails to
understand the severity and doesn't act with urgency in order to facilitate a
diplomatic deal that will return Israeli civilians to their homes safely, the
only other option that remains is the military one, which Israel,
unfortunately, will have to use in order to implement the responsibility of any
government to safeguard the lives of its civilians. I hope that can be avoided,
but currently that does not seem to be the case."
The U.S. has sanctioned both Hamas and Hezbollah as
foreign terrorist organizations. The EU has merely sanctioned Hezbollah’s so-called
"military wing," a terrorist entity, while France has blocked the
designation of a full terror proscription of Hezbollah. The EU sanctioned Hamas
as a terrorist organization in 2003.

Russian forces kill six IS-linked hostage takers at
detention centre
Jun 17, 2024
Moscow: Russian special forces freed two prison guards
and shot dead six inmates linked to the Islamic State militant group who had
taken them hostage at a detention centre in the southern city of Rostov on
Sunday, Russian media said.
State media said that some of the men had been convicted
of terrorism offences and were accused of affiliation with the Islamic State
militant group, which claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Moscow
concert hall in March.
The six hostage takers, one of whom wore a headband
with the flag used by the Islamic State that bears an Arabic inscription,
knocked out window bars and climbed down several floors by rope before taking
the guards hostage with a knife and fire axe. In video published by the 112
Telegram channel, one was shown brandishing a knife beside one of the bound
guards in Rostov-on-Don. In negotiations with the authorities, they demanded
free passage out of the prison.
But Russian special forces decided to storm the
prison. Intense automatic gunfire could be heard in clips published on Telegram
channels. "The criminals were eliminated," Russia's Federal
Penitentiary Service said. "The employees who were being held hostage were
released. They are uninjured," it said. According to local media, the
hostage takers were from Russia's southern republic of Ingushetia and three of
them had been detained in 2022 for planning an attack on a court in another
Russian republic, Karachay-Cherkessia.

Israeli Media: Taliban Assures Iran Of Sending
Fighters To Support Hezbollah
By Khaama Press
June 16, 2024
Israel Army Radio, citing the newspaper Al-Akhbar, has
reported that the Taliban has assured Iran that in the event of a severe war
between Israel and Hezbollah, it will send thousands of its fighters to Lebanon
to support Hezbollah.
This report comes after Hassan KazemiQomi, the special
representative of the Islamic Republic in Afghanistan affairs, stated that
Afghanistan is part of Iran’s resistance axis against Israel and its allies,
and if needed, suicide forces from the country would be sent to Gaza.
In recent months, Taliban leaders and Hamas have had
several meetings, with the Taliban expressing support for Palestinian groups in
their struggle against Israel.
The Islamic Republic refers to groups it supports and
other factions fighting the Western alliance and Israel in the region as the
“Axis of Resistance.”
KazemiQomi’s remarks sparked widespread reactions in
Afghanistan. The Taliban-affiliated Al-Mersad media criticized Iran’s regional
policy, questioning why Iran doesn’t order Hezbollah to fight or directly
battle Israel.
HossamBadran, a member of Hamas’ political bureau,
stated in a March 2024 interview with the Taliban-controlled Bakhtar News
Agency that Afghan jihad and the Taliban’s victory inspired Hamas.
These actions have taken place amidst escalating
conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah following recent Israeli military
attacks on the Gaza Strip.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has caused severe
hardships for Palestinians, including casualties, destruction, and lack of
access to essential services like healthcare, clean water, and electricity,
worsening the humanitarian crisis.
Living conditions in Gaza have deteriorated, with
widespread food insecurity, inadequate shelter, and profound psychological
impacts, especially on children. International organizations call for urgent
humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering.

Bharuch Muslim cleric includes ‘cow’ in animal
sacrifice list, arrested for ‘promoting enmity’
June 17, 2024
In a “preventive measure”, a 54-year-old Muslim cleric
was arrested at Amod in Bharuch on Sunday for an alleged provocative social
media post that could potentially “breach communal peace” ahead of Monday’s
Eid-ul-Adha.
The Bharuch district police has booked the accused —
Maulvi Abdul Rahim Rathod, who is a cleric of Daru Uloom Barkat-e-Khwaja — for
“promoting enmity” after his social media post describing the Islamic
“ritualistic procedure” for animal sacrifice enlisted the cow among other
slaughter animals such as camels and buffaloes. Notably, the cleric was out on
bail after his arrest in a 2022 case for alleged conversion of tribals in the
district.
“The post put up by the cleric was instigating in
nature as it explicitly mentioned cow-slaughter. We acted before a situation
could arise. In fact, the cleric also put up an apology after posting the first
message as he was aware that the police were coming after him,” said Bharuch
Superintendent of Police MayurChavda.
He was arrested based on an FIR lodged by Amod Police
Sub-inspector RA Aswar under IPC Sections 153(A) (promoting enmity between
different groups), [295(A)] (deliberate and malicious acts, that are intended
to outrage religious feelings) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of
peace) as well as IT Act. The district police said the arrest was made as a
‘preventive measure’ to avert an untoward law and order situation ahead of the
approaching festivals, including the Rath Yatra, which will be held in the
first week of July.

After terror strikes, Amit Shah reviews scene; Jammu
troop levels to go up
Jun 17, 2024
NEW DELHI: The Jammu division of J&K - which
witnessed back-to-back terror attacks in its Reasi, Kathua and Doda districts
last week - is set to get a big boost in number of security forces who will
dominate the mountain tops to tackle fresh infiltration bids by terrorists from
Pakistan. The security forces will also comb the forested and undulating
terrain for terrorists holed up there with an intent to create unrest and
communal flare-up among the region's mixed Hindu-Muslim population.At a review
meeting chaired by him here on Sunday, home minister Amit Shah directed
security agencies to use "innovative means" and replicate the successes
achieved in Kashmir region over the past few years - as reflected in the sharp
decline in terrorist attacks and law-and-order-related incidents in the
traditional Valley hotbeds, record flow of tourists and high voter turnouts in
recent Lok Sabha polls - by rolling out an area domination plan and zero-terror
plan in the Jammu division that seems to be the new target of Pakistan-based
terror outfits.
Shah, in a separate meeting, reviewed security and
other arrangements for Amarnath Yatra beginning June 29. Among measures
stressed by him to make the yatra secure and hassle-free for devotees were
tracking their movement and that of yatra vehicles through RFID tags,
deployment of sufficient security personnel, proper sanitisation of routes,
fortification of camps and disaster preparedness.
Both meetings were attended by NSA Ajit Doval, J&K
LG Manoj Sinha and officials from MHA, J&K, Army, paramilitary forces &
intel agencies.

As BJP prepares for UP review, one big question: Why
didn’t Pasmanda Muslims vote for it?
by Maulshree Seth
June 17, 2024
As the BJP prepares to begin its review of the Lok
Sabha results in Uttar Pradesh, where its tally fell from 62 seats in 2019 to
33 seats this time, one of the considerations is the Pasmanda Muslim community
and why the party failed to win its votes despite wide-scale outreach efforts
over the last year and a half.
In the run-up to the elections, the BJP launched a
series of programmes aimed at Pasmanda Muslims and gave prominence to the
community’s leaders both in the government and party cadre in the state. Even
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his public addresses repeatedly spoke of the
community, alleging that both the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) had
neglected it.
“Pasmanda” is a Persian word that means the “ones left
behind”. It is used to describe the marginalised classes among Muslims.
Pasmanda has become an umbrella identity used by backward, Dalit, and tribal
Muslims. Pasmanda Muslims, who account for about 80% of Uttar Pradesh’s Muslim
population, have a considerable presence in constituencies such as Mau,
Ghazipur, Azamgarh, and even Varanasi.
Pasmanda Muslims have been the subject of several BJP
outreach initiatives, from sammelans and snehyatras to meetings with
intellectuals. In differentiating between Pasmanda Muslims and the rest of the
minority community, the party also held qaumichaupals earlier this year that
mainly focused on Pasmanda Muslims.
In July 2022, a BJP national executive conclave in
Hyderabad made plans to focus on Pasmanda Muslims following Modi’s bid to ask
the party to reach out to “deprived and downtrodden” sections in all
communities. According to UP BJP insiders at the time, the party’s hopes to get
the support of Pasmanda Muslims had risen after an estimated 8% of voters from
the community favoured the party in the Assembly polls that year even though
the SP had a strong alliance with other OBC-based regional parties.

'Out of kilter': Biden slams US Supreme Court in
fundraiser event with Obama, Clooney, Julia Roberts
Jun 16, 2024
NEW DELHI: US President Joe Biden slammed the Supreme
Court and said it has never been "out of kilter as it is today." He
made this statement at a star-studded fundraiser event, attended by former
President Barack Obama and Hollywood A-listers such as George Clooney, Julia
Roberts, and Barbra Streisand, raised an impressive $28 million, according to
the campaign.Biden, who seems to stop himself from making any public attack on
Supreme Court, said "the Supreme Court has never been as out of kilter as
it is today."
"The fact of the matter is that there has never
been a court that is this far out of step," Biden said. He noted that
conservative Justice Clarence Thomas had said the court, which overturned the
half-century-old federal right to abortion, should reconsider such things as in
vitro fertilization and contraception.
Since Biden came into power the Supreme Court has
taken many decision like gay rights, gun control and environmental regulation.
It has blocked the president's agenda on immigration, student loans, vaccine
mandates and climate change. Notably, Trump nominated three of the six
conservatives who control the nine-member court.
This star-stubbed event was hosted to energize
potential supporters for the upcoming November election, which the attendees
emphasized as one of the most crucial in the country's history.

June 16, 2024
On Saturday, Iran and Sweden exchanged prisoners. The
swap had the appearance of any two countries engaged in diplomatic negotiations
to free their citizens. Families were elated; governments were relieved.
For more than four decades, since the 1979 revolution
that installed a conservative theocracy, the country has made the detention of
foreign and dual citizens central to its foreign policy. For Iran, the approach
has paid off. For the world, it has been a troubling trend.
Iran’s demands have evolved along with its tactics. In
exchange for releasing foreigners it has asked for prisoners, assassins, cash
and frozen funds. It has engineered complex deals involving multiple countries.
And on Saturday Iran gained the release of its most prized target: the first
Iranian official to be convicted of crimes against humanity.
In the exchange, Sweden released Hamid Nouri, a former
judiciary official who was serving a life sentence in Sweden for his role in
the mass execution of 5,000 dissidents in 1988.
In return, Iran freed two Swedish citizens: Johan
Floderus, a diplomat for the European Union, and Saeed Azizi, a dual-national
Iranian. Left behind was a third, a Swedish scientist who is a dual citizen,
AhmadrezaDjalali, who has been jailed in Iran and sentenced to execution on
murky charges of treason.
“Iran is perfecting the art of hostage diplomacy and
playing everyone,” said Nizar Zakka, a Lebanese citizen who lives in the United
States and was a prisoner in Iran from 2015 to 2019. He is the president of
Hostage Aid Worldwide, an advocacy group that helps secure the release of
hostages. “The West is making it easy for them because there is no unified
policy against hostage taking.”
Iran’s hostage taking began almost as soon as the
formation of the Islamic Republic in 1979, when a revolution toppled the
monarchy of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi.
A group of students seized the American Embassy in
Tehran and took more than 50 Americans hostage, a 444-day standoff that
permanently ruptured diplomatic relations between United States and Iran. The
Iranians wanted the United States to send the deposed shah, who had advanced
cancer, back to Iran. (The United States did not do that, and the hostages were
finally released through negotiations mediated by Algeria.)

Swede released from Iranian prison says he is in

16 June 2024
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — A Swede freed in a prisoner swap
with Iran, 33-year-old EU diplomat Johan Floderus, said in his first words

satellite phone while on a flight home from Iran on Saturday.

Israel war on Gaza live: Five more children killed in
Israeli attacks
By Lyndal Rowlands
17 Jun 2024
Israel’s military has warned that cross-border fire from
Hezbollah into Israel could trigger a wider conflagration with “devastating
consequences for Lebanon and the entire region”.
The Associated Press has found at least 60 cases in
which families in Gaza have lost at least 25 of their members to Israel’s strikes
during its war on Gaza.
Al Jazeera broadcast engineer Mohamed Abu Al-Qumsan
lost 19 members of his family in one strike on the Jabalia refugee camp, his
extended family is mentioned in the AP report.
The Israeli army is creating a new division for reservists
over the retirement age of 40 to meet the “urgent need for more troops”, an
Israeli Army Radio correspondent said.
The division of five reserve brigades is in the
“advance stages” of planning and will draw on other Israelis who were
previously exempt from serving, DoronKadosh said in a post on X.

'Unaware' Netanyahu slams military's tactical pauses
plan
Jun 17, 2024
Israeli PM Netanyahu criticised plans announced by the
military on Sunday to hold daily tactical pauses in fighting along one of the
main roads into Gaza to facilitate aid delivery into the Palestinian enclave.
The military had announced the daily pauses from 0500
GMT until 1600 GMT in the area from the Kerem Shalom Crossing to Salah al-Din
Road and then northwards. "When the prime minister heard the reports of an
11-hour humanitarian pause in the morning, he turned to his military secretary
and made it clear that this was unacceptable to him," an Israeli official
said. The military clarified that normal operations would continue in Rafah,
the main focus of its operation in southern Gaza.
The strange choreography of the messaging became
stranger still when the govt suggested that Netanyahu only learned of the
military's plan from news reports. But analysts said it was likely that the
prime minister was aware of the plan and that each announcement was tailored to
different audiences. The whipsaw statements appeared to reflect the competing pressures
facing Netanyahu, as he juggles demands from the Biden administration and
elsewhere around the world with those of his own hawkish govt. His far-right
coalition partners oppose any concessions in Gaza.

Kyiv's territorial integrity must be basis of any
peace: Summit
Jun 17, 2024
Buergenstock: Eighty-four countries called Sunday for
the "territorial integrity" of Ukraine to be the basis for any peace
agreement to end Russia's two-year war, though some key developing nations at a
Swiss conference did not join in - and the way forward for diplomacy remains
unclear.
Over 90 countries attended the two-day talks at a
Swiss Alpine resort at the behest of Ukrainian PrezVolodymyr Zelensky, billed
as a "peace summit" even though Moscow was not invited. A decision by
China to stay away all but assured that the summit would fail to achieve
Ukraine's goal of persuading major countries from the "global South"
to join in isolating Russia. Brazil attended only as an "observer".
India, Indonesia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and South Africa all withheld their
signatures from the summit communique, even though some contentious issues were
omitted in the hope of drawing wider support.
Still, the conference provided Kyiv with a chance to
showcase the support from Western allies that it says it needs to keep fighting
against a far bigger enemy. Leaders including US vice-president Kamala Harris,
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French Prez Macron gathered at the
mountaintop resort of Buergenstock. US Prez Biden did not attend despite
invitations from Zelensky.

PM, Punjab governor meet amid PPP-‘N’ tensions

ISLAMABAD: PPP leader and Punjab Governor Sardar
Saleem Haider Khan met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday in the backdrop
of his party’s reservation over being neglected by the government in
consultations over key decisions.
Recently, the PPP, who is in a sort of an informal

reservations over the federal budget and Punjab’s controversial defamation law.
The PPP didn’t fully participate in the budget session

What is the Muslim Haj pilgrimage?
JUNE 17, 2024
DUBAI - Here is a look at the haj, one of the largest
mass gatherings in the world, which starts in Saudi Arabia on Friday (June 14).
* The haj is an annual pilgrimage that millions of
Muslims make to Mecca with the intention of performing religious rites as
taught by the Prophet Mohammad to his followers 14 centuries ago.
* The fifth pillar of Islam, the haj is mandatory once
in a lifetime for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it and is the most
significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity.
* The haj begins in the 12th month of the Islamic
year, which is lunar, not solar, meaning the haj and the fasting month of
Ramadan can fall at different times of the solar calendar each year.

Hajj pilgrims innovate for comfort amid Saudi Arabia’s
efforts to beat the heat
MOHAMMED AL-KINANI
June 16, 2024
ARAFAT: Pilgrims have remained inventive in their
quest for comfort, despite Saudi Arabia’s diligent efforts to mitigate the
sweltering heat at the holy sites.
Alongside the Kingdom’s measures — which include
extensive cooling systems — pilgrims are using rechargeable and battery-powered
neck and handheld fans in their determination to offset the challenging
conditions brought by the summer.
The portable fans provide much-needed relief by
offering personal cooling in crowded areas where air circulation may be
limited. They allow pilgrims to maintain comfort and focus on their religious
duties without being overly affected by the extreme temperatures, thereby
enhancing their overall pilgrimage experience.
According to online retail websites, the hands-free
fans range from $4 to $8, while neck fans are between $32 to $60. However, some
portable waist clip fans may cost from $30 to more than $110.

Beyond its religious significance, the pilgrimage
offers a platform for cultural engagement among worshippers, displaying the
rich cultural tapestry of the global Muslim community.
The cultural diversity is evident not only in the
pilgrims’ traditional attire, but also in the variety of languages that can be

Muslim pilgrims arrive to perform the symbolic

Pilgrims perform Farewell Tawaf as Hajj draws to a
close
IsmaeelNaar
Jun 17, 2024
Pilgrims have begun their last rites, including the
final circling of the Kaaba in Makkah, known as the Farewell Tawaf, as their
Hajj pilgrimage comes to a close.
After performing the stoning ritual on Sunday, the
pilgrims sacrificed animals to mark Eid Al Adha, the festival of the feast that
takes place at the end of Hajj.
Pilgrims also exited from their state of ihram, which
requires them to follow the modest Hajj dress code, with men shaving or cutting
their hair, while women trim the length of a fingertip from one strand of hair.
They then changed back into their normal clothing and
proceeded to Makkah to perform the Tawaf Al Ifadah (Farewell Tawaf) and sai’

Malawi's VP SaulosChilima to be laid to rest on Monday
after state funeral
17-06-2024
The 51-year-old SaulosChilima and 8 other individuals
including the ex-wife of the former Malawian President died when a
twin-propeller aircraft went down in a hilly, forested area in bad weather.
Officials with Chilima’s United Transformation
Movement political party — a party different from the president's — criticized
the government response as slow and said there was no transponder on the plane,
concerning for an aircraft carrying a high-level delegation.
Chilima and Chakwera had led Malawi under unusual
circumstances. They both ran for president in 2019 as opposition candidates but
teamed up to challenge election results in court over irregularities, and won.
They then won the rerun of the election — the first time in Africa that a
court-overturned election result resulted in a defeat for the incumbent
president.

Senegal's fanciest sheep are destined not for
slaughter, but for lives of luxury
17-06-2024
Ladoum sheep, that can fetch tens of thousands of
dollars, live a life of luxury in special parlors where they are massaged,
groomed and fed syringes full of vitamins.
Muslims on Eid al-Adha kill and eat a sheep to
commemorate the Quranic tale of Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismail as an
act of obedience to God.
Celebrated for their gleaming white fur and
symmetrical horns, the animal is most often bought for prestige breeding and
beauty contests, and not to be eaten.
