Protest Against Forced Conversions Of Minor Girls,
Demand Anti-Forced Conversions Bill in Pakistan
Representative Image. (Getty

ANI
26 February, 2022
Okara [Pakistan], February 26 (ANI): Protests erupted
in Pakistan’s Okara District in the Punjab province, demanding to stop forced
conversions of minor girls and to pass the Anti-Forced Conversions Bill.
Earlier in January, Pakistan’s minority councilors
voiced their concerns over the lack of protection to religious minorities as
the country is witnessing a steep increase in incidents of forced conversion,
with cases rising from 15 in 2020 to over 60 in 2021, according to media
reports.
More than 70 per cent of people who were forcibly
converted were minor girls. Reports say every single year, at least 1,000 girls
are abducted, forced to change their religious identity and are married off in
Pakistan and there seem to be no measures taken in order to protect them from
this criminal practice.
Recently, two Hindu girls–aged 13 and 19–along with a
teenage Christian girl were kidnapped and married off to 40-year-old men after
having changed their faith. This prompted a large demonstration in Hyderabad
which was aimed at creating awareness about such violations that thrive under
the public and state’s radar.
The matter of concern is that there is no law that
prevents this from occurring. The Prohibition of Forced Conversion Act of 2021
was prepared and introduced to the parliament only to have been rejected
because “it would create further problems for minorities”.
These are grave human rights violations–both the
forced conversions and underage marriages that follow–which must be dealt with
through proper laws that prohibit both. Furthermore, councils should be set up
to verify, in instances of religious conversion, whether an individual is
acting autonomously or under duress. Pakistan is already a dangerous home for
minorities and issues like forced conversions only make it all the more
hostile.
Such cases of crime against minorities have been
increasing steadily in recent years in Pakistan, as per the report. The cases
of forced conversion have gone up since Pakistan’s birth in 1947.
The plight of women in Pakistan is increasing day by
day as a fresh report has stated that nearly 6,754 women were abducted in the
country’s Punjab province in the first half of 2021. Out of that, 1,890 women
were raped, 3,721 were tortured and 752 children were raped.
On August 30 last year, the Board of Trustees of
Transparency International Pakistan (TIP) expressed concerns over increasing
attacks on women in the country.
In Islamabad, there were nearly 34 official incidents
of rape while 27 incidents were reported in the media. The number of official
incidents of violence recorded in Punjab was 3,721, but only 938 cases were
reported.

Mosque Loudspeakers' Volumes: Indonesia's New
Guidelines For Quieter Mosques Spark Controversy

February 27, 2022
JAKARTA -- Indonesia's new guidelines to address
complaints about mosque loudspeakers' volumes are sparking controversy in the
Muslim-majority nation.
A circular issued on Feb. 18 by the Ministry of
Religious Affairs introduced several new guidelines on loudspeakers, including
maximum volume, for the more than 600,000 registered mosques in the sprawling
archipelago.
Mosques use loudspeakers for calls to prayer and other
matters. Over the years many people have complained about sound level and
quality, especially given that some prayers take place at dawn. Despite
multiple attempts to address the issue since an initial guideline was put out
more than 30 years ago, a sizable portion of mosques have failed to follow the
rules.
"The use of loudspeakers in mosques and prayer
rooms is currently a necessity for Muslims as one of the media to spread Islam
in the community. At the same time, we live in a diverse society, in terms of
religion, belief, background, and others, so efforts are needed to maintain
fraternity and social harmony," said the circular, signed off by the
religious affairs minister, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas.
While over 80% of Indonesians follow Islam, the
country also recognizes Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and
Confucianism as official religions.
Mosques broadcast the call to prayer five times a day:
at dawn, after midday, in the afternoon, after sunset and at night. © Reuters
The circular, which amends guidelines dating to 1978,
introduced for the first time a volume limit for loudspeakers, setting it at
100 decibels, and required sound quality to be "good or not
discordant." It also shortened the time allowed for Quranic recitals
before the dawn call to prayer to 10 minutes, from the previous 15 minutes.
Mosque volumes have long been a contentious issue in
Indonesia. In 2012, then-Vice President Boediono, who goes by one name, faced a
backlash after suggesting that mosques lower volumes for calls to prayer. In
2018, a woman in North Sumatra was sentenced to prison for blasphemy after
complaining about the volume of mosque loudspeakers. And last year, people
living in Tangerang on the outskirts of the capital, Jakarta, swarmed a housing
complex over a resident's alleged protest against mosque noise.
It is an issue that has caused a stir in other
countries as well, even Muslim ones. In neighboring Malaysia, which leaves
deciding rules on mosque loudspeakers to individual states, several states have
restricted their use only for the call to prayer.
And in Saudi Arabia, a circular was issued last year
that said speaker volumes should be set at no more than one-third of their
maximum volume, and that they should not broadcast full sermons.
After the Indonesia's circular was made public, a
lawmaker from the Islamist opposition Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) also
expressed concern over the new guidelines.
"In my opinion, the Ministry of Religious Affairs
does not need to regulate very technical matters regarding worship issues,
especially the use of speakers for the call to prayer, recitation, or others in
the community, because this is not the same in every village," he said, as
reported by local media.
"It's ok to regulate using outside speaker for
call to prayer. To be honest, it is disturbing, as my house is next to a
traditional mosque and every evening the noise is unbearable. Especially when
[people] are reciting Quran, it feels like an earthquake in the
neighbourhood," one Twitter user quipped.
Another Twitter user, however, said it feels like
Islam seems to be the only religion being targeted, and "it's getting
close to feel like living in France," which controversially has banned the
wearing of Islamic veils in public spaces. Another said: "Since I was
born, call to prayer using external speaker is everywhere, no one bothered. Why
is there someone who dares to regulate the call to prayer?"

Children In Afghanistan ‘Cannot Be Held Hostage To
Politics’: UNICEF

-----
February 27, 2022
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says
children in the crisis-hit Afghanistan “cannot be held hostage to politics,” as
the UN food agency has warned that 95 percent of people in the country do not
have enough to eat.
“This is no way to live. The children of Afghanistan
cannot be held hostage to politics. Decisions and actions taken today will
dictate whether these children live or die, whether they suffer or thrive, and
ultimately, whether the country survives or declines,” she said.
Almost 24 million people in Afghanistan – or 60
percent of the population – suffer from acute hunger, while millions have
already been displaced. Earlier this month, the UN’ World Food Programme (WFP)
also warned “hunger continues rising in Afghanistan” and that “95% of the
population don't have enough to eat.”
The dire situation in Afghanistan, which particularly
impacts its children, unfolded after the Taliban came to power in August last
year and formed an interim government, which has not been recognized by any
country.
Afghanistan has about $9 billion in assets overseas,
including the $7 billion in the US. The rest is mostly in Germany, the United
Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Almost all of these assets have been frozen,
putting the country’s economy into a free fall.
The Taliban government has repeatedly called for the
release of the frozen assets, but Washington has continued to rebuff the calls.
The group has already warned Washington that they would be forced to reconsider
their policy toward the US if it refused to free Afghanistan's assets.
The UN also warned in October last year that without
financial aid or humanitarian relief, Afghanistan is on a “countdown to
catastrophe.”
Furthermore, the UN, along with international
organizations, face mounting challenges in addressing Afghanistan's growing
humanitarian crisis. The world body projects this year that over one million
Afghan children will need treatment for malnutrition and up to 97 percent of
Afghans could be living below the poverty line. A landmark UNICEF $2 billion
appeal to donors for aid is only 17 percent funded.
“And things are poised to get even worse. According to
our projections for 2022, more than 1 million children will need treatment for
severe acute malnutrition. Nearly 13 million children will need humanitarian
assistance. Diseases like measles and acute watery diarrhoea will continue to
spread. Up to 97 percent of all Afghan families could be living below the
poverty line in a matter of months,” Russell said in her statement.
About 80 percent of the Afghan budget was financed by
international aid until August, when it was halted due to the Taliban’s
takeover of Afghanistan. The Taliban have already warned Western diplomats that
insisting on sanctions as a means to pressure their governance could undermine
security and trigger a wave of economic refugees.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad Warn Israel Against Ongoing Gaza
Blockade, Settlements Expansion
(Representative Image: Alwaght
News)
-----
2022-February-26
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Palestinian Hamas and Islamic Jihad
resistance movements warned Israel over the continuing brutal siege against the
impoverished Gaza Strip and the regime’s land expropriation and illegal
settlements expansion activities in the occupied West Bank and Al-Quds.
The two movements made the warning during a meeting
that brought together their senior officials in the Lebanese capital city of
Beirut on Friday, Anadolu news agency reported.
“The continuation of the occupying Israeli regime’s
settlement projects in the occupied West Bank and Al-Quds, and its continued
siege of the Gaza Strip cannot be tolerated, and the Palestinian resistance
front cannot allow the situation to continue as it is,” they stressed in a
joint statement.
Gaza Strip, home to some two million Palestinians, has
been under an all-out Israeli siege since June 2007. The tight blockade has caused
a decline in the standards of living as well as unprecedented levels of
unemployment and unrelenting poverty.
All Israeli settlements are illegal under
international law as they are built on occupied land. The United Nations
Security Council has condemned Israel’s settlement activities in the occupied
territories in several resolutions.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad underlined the need “to
achieve national Palestinian unity, on the basis of partnership, restructure
and development of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and an
agreement on a national struggle campaign [against Israel]".
The resistance groups also expressed their opposition
to the Tel Aviv regime’s flagrant violations of Palestinian prisoners’ rights,
and cautioned Israeli authorities against the grave consequences of their
practices.
There are reportedly more than 7,000 Palestinians held
at Israeli jails. Hundreds of the inmates have been apparently incarcerated
under the practice of the so-called administrative detention. Some prisoners
have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years.
Palestinians and human rights groups say
"administrative detention" violates the right to due process since
evidence is withheld from prisoners while they are held for lengthy periods without
being charged, tried, or convicted.
The detention takes place on orders from a military
commander and on the basis of what the Israeli regime describes as secret
evidence.
Rights groups describe Israel’s use of administrative
detention as a “bankrupt tactic” and have long called on the regime to bring
the practice to an end.

If establishment stays neutral, Imran can’t survive
no-trust move: Bilawal
Imran Ayub
February 27, 2022
KARACHI: Sounding confident and determined about the
renewed campaign of the opposition parties against the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf
(PTI) government, Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on
Saturday claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan could not survive the vote of
no confidence in the government, if the establishment chose to stay neutral.
However, responding to a question after his press
conference at Bilawal House, he appeared a bit sceptical about the role of the
establishment amid the emerging political developments referring to the history
of the country which didn’t suggest ‘very good’ prospects on these lines.
The PPP chairman made it clear that whatever the
results of the opposition’s no trust motion, his party would continue its

PM Imran retains old faces in new PTI committees
Amir Wasim
February 27, 2022
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan, in his capacity
as the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) chairman, reconstituted the party’s
core committee and central executive committee (CEC), mostly retaining the old
faces.
According to an official announcement by the PTI’s
central media department, the new core committee comprises 33 members, whereas
the newly formed CEC has 60 members. Mr Khan will remain the head of both
committees.
Prominent members of the core committee include Shah
Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Aamir Kiani, Fawad Chaudhry, Pervez Khattak,
Shafqat Mehmood, Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, Imran Ismail, Asad Qaiser, Qasim
Suri, Ali Amin Gandapur, Ali Zaidi, Hammad Azhar, Mahmood Khan, Shireen Mazari,
Usman Buzdar, Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, Murad Saeed, Aamir Dogar, Azam Swati,
Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Babar Awan and Haleem Adil Sheikh.
In December, Prime Minister Imran Khan dissolved the
party’s organisational structure across the country a few days after a shocking
defeat of the PTI in the first phase of local government elections in its
stronghold of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He then constituted a 21-member committee to
form a new structure of party organisations.
Announcing the premier’s decision to dissolve all
party chapters, federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry told a news
conference at the time that Mr Khan had dissolved all PTI organisations from
centre to tehsil level across the country after consulting the party’s senior
leadership and that all the office-bearers of the organisational set-up had
been removed from their posts.
Mr Khan blamed the selection of wrong candidates for
the defeat in the first phase of KP’s local government elections. Later, the
special committee constituted by Mr Khan to review the PTI’s organisational
structure decided to revoke party’s constitution and revive the previous one
adopted in 2015 with a few changes aimed at strengthening the party at
grassroots level.
The committee recommended that the party should have
five tiers instead of seven and make provincial constituencies the new tier in
place of tehsils.

after misreporting
By MEE staff
26 February 2022
Zarah Sultana, a British Muslim MP with the Labour
party, said on Friday that she had received "a death threat... filled with
racist abuse" linked to her misreported views on Ukraine.
"I am in no doubt that this horrific and absurd
attack is the direct result of inaccurate media reports and deliberately
misleading press comments," she wrote in a Facebook post.
A local BBC radio station apologised to her earlier in
the week, she said, for falsely stating she had "suggested Nato is
responsible for the crisis in Ukraine".
