A festival started in India today that was marked by
devoted Muslims poking out their eyeballs with knives.
It is a memorial to the death of Sufi saint Khwaja
Moinuddin Chishti, who established the Chishtiya Sufi order in the country
around 800 years ago.
An Indian Muslim devotee performs a stunt by bulging
his eyeball with a knife during the flag hoisting ceremony at the Urs festival
in Ajmer, India, on January 29
The festival will last for another five days, and
features devotees performing stunts such as making their eyeballs bulge while
flags are raised.
He later used a thin pole to force his eye to protrude
from his face as people in colourful clothing watched on
It traces its principles from the prophet Muhammad
through his cousin and son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Sufis believe they are practising Ihsan, the
perfection of worship, as revealed by Angel Gabriel to Muhammad.
Sufi Muslims consider themselves as the original
advocates of a true, pure and original form of Islam.

Muslim Cleric, Two Others Arrested For Allegedly
Killing Man Over Offensive Facebook Post That Hurt Religious Sentiments Of The

Three people, including a Muslim cleric, have been
arrested in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district for allegedly killing a 27-year-old
man, reported The Indian Express on Sunday, citing the police.
Kishan Boliya, was allegedly murdered in Dhandhuka
town on Tuesday after he shared a Facebook post, which the police said had
“hurt religious sentiments of some people from the minority community”.
The arrested persons have been identified as Mohammad
Ayub Javarawala, the cleric, and two other residents of Dhandhuka, Sabbir
Chopda and Imtiyaz Pathan. They have been remanded in police custody.
Ahmedabad Superintendent of Police Virendra Singh
Yadav said on Friday that preliminary investigations into the killing showed that
Chopda had fired at Boliya while riding pillion on Pathan’s motorcycle. Boliya
had died on the spot, reported PTI.
“We zeroed in on Shabbir and Pathan after scanning the
footage of CCTV [cameras] installed on the route, which showed the duo
following Boliya on their motorcycle,” Yadav said. “Shabbir is quite
radicalised and was in touch with a Mumbai-based maulvi [religious teacher],
who asked him to be in touch with Javrawala.”
The police official said that at a religious gathering
attended by Shabbir, Javrawala had allegedly said that Muslims should not spare
people who insult Islam.
Yadav said that local Muslims had approached the
police after they found a Facebook post shared by Boliya on January 6
offensive. The police then filed a first information report in the case and
took action, he said.
“However, Shabbir was not happy with the FIR and
police action,” Yadav said. “So, he consulted the cleric [Javrawala] and told
him that he needed a weapon to teach Boliya a lesson for sharing that post.
Javrawala then gave him a pistol and some cartridges. With the help of his
friend Pathan, Shabbir shot Boliya dead on January 25.”
Following the killing, Hindutva group Vishva Hindu
Parishad had called for a shutdown in Dhandhuka on Thursday. The next day,
state Cabinet ministers Harsh Sanghavi and Kiritsinh Rana met members of
Boliya’s family.
Sanghvi said that the Ahmedabad Police has formed
teams to arrested the accused persons within 24 hours and that the matter has
been handed over to the anti-terrorism squad.

French Imam, Hassen Chalghoumi, Recounts Death Threats
From Islamists For Asking To Respect Holocaust

29 January 2022
A French imam known for his involvement in interfaith
initiatives said he and his family have been living under threat from Islamists
for years, emotionally recalling the toll the assaults and harassment have
taken.
In an interview with France 2 TV this month, Hassen
Chalghoumi said he first started receiving death threats in 2005, after calling
for commemorations of the Holocaust to be respected.
“I made a solemn appeal to respect the memory of the
Holocaust, to also think about what people did to their fellow human beings,
the consequences of racism, hatred, antisemitism… But unfortunately, my words
were misunderstood. Two days later, they ransacked my house,” he said,
according to a translation by the Middle East Media Research Institute.
“I started to receive death threats in the name of a
cause that has nothing to do with [my words] — the Palestinian cause, in the
name of an ideology of hatred, perhaps against Israeli policy, or out of actual
antisemitism,” Chalghoumi continued. “And then I received anonymous calls and
letters. In 2009, they torched my car, and they attacked my house.”
Many of the death threats Chalghoumi has received have
been over his friendly ties with CRIF, the umbrella group representing French
Jewish communities, and for visiting Israel several times.
During a tour of the West Bank with settler leaders in
2019, Chalghoumi said support of boycotts of Israel ran against Quranic law,
and that he hopes to encourage dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians so
“no mother — not Israeli nor Palestinian — will cry” in the future.
Chalghoumi is something of an outlier in Muslim
religious discourse, and was notable for supporting France’s ban on the burqa,
or full face-covering.
“No, although the consequences have reached my home. I
cannot say that all this remains outside my home, because it doesn’t. The
Internet, social media, the threats. They assaulted my wife in a market. They
spat on her. They even asked her to divorce me,” he said.
The Imam of Drancy, Hassen Chalghoumi (left), writer
Marek Halter (right) and others prepare to take part in The Muslim March
Against Terrorism in Paris, on July 8, 2017. (AFP Photo/Francois Guillot)
Chalghoumi blamed the head of a pro-Hamas group in
France for some of the threats and said several terror groups have issued
religious edicts calling for his death.
“In 2015, I had the Islamic State [against me]… In
Syria, too, they issued a fatwa against me. Hezbollah, too, and Hamas. All
those small groups don’t believe in light. You should know that the words of a
moderate man of faith is a source of trouble for them. That’s why they issued a
fatwa against me,” he said.
The imam said he attends the mosque at different times
of day to make it harder for a would-be attacker to trail him, and that he also
wears a bulletproof vest to protect against knives.
“They have another name. We are still human beings…
One of my daughters was assaulted. She has gained 30 kilograms,” an emotional
Chalghoumi recalled. “We are strong inside, we will never give up. But when it
affects my family, it becomes difficult.”

New Non-Muslim Court In Abu Dhabi Can Process Divorce
Case In A Day
Kate Scully says the divorce
process was quick and painless. Victor Besa / The National
------
Shireena Al Nowais
Jan 30, 2022
It took just one day for an American woman in Abu
Dhabi to attend court with her soon-to-be former husband and receive a message
to say her divorce had been finalised.
Kate Scully, 35, a mother of two, was one of the first
people to go through the new court system, which was announced in November. The
court deals with cases related to marriage, custody, divorce, paternity,
inheritance and personal status for non-Muslim residents.
The Abu Dhabi resident had previously been considering
her options and when news broke of the new court being set up in the capital
for people in her position she felt it was the right time to proceed.
Under the new laws, spouses have the right to divorce
without needing to prove harm was done in the marriage, or going through any
lengthy mediation process.
When it comes to the children, joint and equal custody
is automatically granted to parents after divorce, with procedures in place to
settle disputes.
“I know that it used to be really hard when there
wasn’t a non-Muslim court so it would have been really hard for us [to
divorce],” Ms Scully told The National.
“Literally, 10 days before my court date, I walked
into the happiness centre at Mushrif mall and gave them my documents, which
were my marriage certificate and emirates ID. I asked them to make sure it was
going to the non-Muslim court and paid a few simple fees and that was it.”
Under the previous system she would have been given a
court date months later and only after attending several failed mediation
sessions between the couple.
In total the process could take up to three years,
especially if there was a lack of proof of harm, a previous requirement of
divorce.
“We waited for the judge to show up on Zoom and it was
the easiest thing I had ever done. We received the final judgment on the same
day through an SMS and that was it.”
This is something I researched before and it is nearly
impossible to get a divorce in the US without a lawyer. It is extremely costly
and time consuming and as a mom of two kids, I was really not looking forward
to it. I am also a child of divorced parents and I saw my parents in court for
over five years.
“The law manages divorce cases in a peaceful, swift,
and civilised separation procedure, by simply considering divorce as a right
and not as a legal battle or a dispute,” said legal expert Hesham Al Rafei.
“The law recognises that adults are old enough to make
their own decisions, whether to marry or to divorce, the court's role is not to
intervene with that unless to offer protection when needed.”
One of the many benefits of an expedited system is
that if children are involved they will not be subject to a drawn-out legal
battle, Mr Al Rafei said.
"The new law also takes into consideration the
mental health and stability of the kids by limiting the hostility between the
parents caused by a lengthy litigation battle before the courts.

PTI Leader Sees Downfall Of PPP, Rise Of Pakistan
Tehreek-i-Insaf in Sindh
PTI general secretary along
with Sindh Governor inaugurates Saddar Cooperative Market on Saturday after its
restoration following the massive fire incident in which the market was totally
gutted in November 2021.—Fahim Siddiqi / White Star
-----
Staff Reporter
January 30, 2022
KARACHI: Heralding the rise of Pakistan
Tehreek-i-Insaf in Sindh and predicting the downfall of the Pakistan Peoples
Party, senior PTI leader Asad Umar claimed that the ruling party in Sindh was
going to lose the upcoming local government elections as well as the next
general elections because the ‘record corruption cases’ and ‘bad governance’ in
its three consecutive terms would prove detrimental to the PPP.
“The people of Karachi in particular will settle the
score with the PPP in the next polls,” he said while speaking at the
inauguration ceremony of 500 newly constructed shops that had been gutted in
the Saddar Cooperative Market fire in November.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, PTI MNA Aftab Siddiqui,
MPA Khurram Sher Zaman, market association representative Hanif Memon and a
number of traders also attended the programme.
Mr Umar, the federal minister for planning and development,
accused the Sindh government of causing irreparable damages to Karachi and
expressed the resolve that the federal government would not allow any LG system
that would encroach upon the people’s rights.
“The way PPP has caused severe damage to Karachi, the
people of this city would settle their score with the PPP in the next two
elections [local government and general elections],” he said. “Then the PPP
would not have the provincial government neither the local government. The
people of Karachi have been exploited for years, but enough is enough. Now the
federal government will lead them to get their rights.”
The strong words and warning to the PPP government by
the newly-appointed secretary general of the PTI came after he shared with the
audience a sketch of development projects for Karachi and called for stronger
LG system to get maximum benefit of the federal-government funded projects.
He was sure that the Rs120 billion project of K-IV
water supply scheme would only benefit Karachiites when an empowered local
government would be in place controlling its supply.
“Before the end of 2023, K-IV will start supplying 260
million gallons of water to Karachi. But here the job of KWSB starts. And for
effective, transparent and successful supply, there should be an empowered
local government system which controls all these affairs,” said Mr Umar.
He said Karachi was deprived of a modern transport
system, but the recently inaugurated Green Line Bus project was one of the most
modern transport services in the region.

SC judge Yahya Afridi cautions PM Imran over retaining
‘delinquents’

January 30, 2022
ISLAMABAD: Justice Yahya Afridi has cautioned Prime
Minister Imran Khan that retaining “delinquents” like Law Minister Dr Farogh
Naseem and Asset Recovery Unit (ARU) chairman Shahzad Akbar in important
positions of authority would belie the most elementary principles of good
governance and expose the PM’s complicity with them.
Section 216 of the Income Tax Ordinance (ITO) 2001 was
blatantly breached in the case of Mrs Sarina Isa — the wife of Justice Qazi
Faez Isa — on the unlawful directions of the ARU chairman with the concurrence
of the law minister. Thus, they breached the statutory confidentiality of Mrs

‘Jihad Rehab’ Director Responds to Charges That
Sundance Documentary Endangered Its Subjects
Christian Zilko
Jan 29, 2022
For better or worse, one of the most talked about
movies at Sundance is “Jihad Rehab.” The documentary from American filmmaker
Meg Smaker follows three Yemeni men who were recently released from Guantanamo
Bay following 15 years of unlawful detainment. Before rejoining society, they
spend time at a “rehabilitation center” in Saudi Arabia. Smaker was granted
exclusive access to the facility, and spent five years making a documentary
that she hoped would to “pull back that curtain of Oz. And just see the human
behind that curtain.”
However, some early responses to the film have argued
that “Jihad Rehab” perpetuates harmful stereotypes about Muslim men and
potentially places the subjects in danger.

Turkish-backed rebels step up attacks on Islamic State

Khaled al-Khateb
January 29, 2022
ALEPPO, Syria — The Turkish-backed Syrian opposition
has waged a security campaign against Islamic State (IS) cells in Azaz in the
northern Aleppo countryside since Jan. 20, leading to the arrest of dozens of
IS members and collaborators. The hunt for other members is expected to continue
through the confessions of their fellows.
The Azaz media office said in a statement posted on

Qatar and Iran accused of religious cleansing of
Baha’is
By BENJAMIN WEINTHAL
JANUARY 30, 2022
Ahead of US president Joe Biden's meeting on Monday
with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the notoriously anti- Baha’i
Iranian regime and Qatar’s monarchy are accused of promoting the religious
cleansing of the persecuted Baha’i community in the tiny oil-rich Gulf country
of Qatar.
Ghanem Nuseibeh, a leading expert on Qatar’s regime
and the founder of the London-based Cornerstone Global Associates, told The
Jerusalem Post last week that “It is very troubling but not a surprise to hear
that Iran is pressuring their allies to persecute the Baha’i community. It has
long been a policy of the Iranian regime to persecute the Baha’i community in
Iran, but more recently we have seen them being persecuted outside Iran by the
regime’s proxy - the Houthis in Yemen and more recently and more troubling, in
Qatar. The Qatari regime is clearly acting at the behest of the Tehran regime
and collaboration between both states has been going on for several years. “

What is driving the robust growth of Bangladesh’s RMG
exports?
Mustafizur Rahman
Jan 30, 2022
It is indeed encouraging to note that the export
sector of Bangladesh has rebounded in recent months, and earnings from exports
(equivalent to about USD 24.69 billion) have registered highly impressive
growth during the first half (July-December) of the 2021-22 fiscal year.
Exports have posted an increase of 28.4 percent in this period compared to the
corresponding period of FY2020-21 (when total export stood at about USD 19.2
billion). To compare, export growth in the first half of FY2020-21 over the
corresponding period of FY2019-20 had been a negative (-) 0.4 percent. While
the low base effect of FY2020-21 ought to be kept in mind, the robust export
performance in FY2021-22 is no doubt very encouraging.
Also, to note, exports have picked up and experienced
sustained momentum particularly during the more recent months (the
September-December period of 2021). The growth rate in the first half of
FY2021-22 has indeed surpassed the strategic growth target set for the fiscal
year by more than 15.0 percent.

Let the promises made to SUST students be fruitful
Golam Mortoza
Jan 30, 2022
On January 26, Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal reached the
campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) at 3am to meet
the demonstrating students. The media covered his journey in detail, which
makes it hard to believe that SUST teachers and the teachers' association there
missed the coverage. Some "highly placed" decision makers of the
government also visited Dr Iqbal and Dr Yasmeen's home before they started for
Sylhet. It is unlikely that the teachers and their association, or in other
words, the politicians and their association, were oblivious to these
developments. However, at the time of students ending their 163-hour-long
hunger strike, none of the teachers were present. Some were out on a
"morning walk" and came across Dr Iqbal, though.
Some of the teachers brought dinner for the confined
vice-chancellor. The students barred them from entering, but allowed the police
to take the food inside. A few hours before, police had forcibly shut down all
food outlets on the campus, making it impossible for the demonstrating students
to get food. The previous night, police detained five former students for
donating money for the students' cause. When the teachers brought food for the
VC, the demonstrating students as well as others were starving. But the
teachers did not utter a single word against the closing of food shops. The
medical treatment facility was also shut down. Teachers kept mum through all
this. Evidently, police did not take these actions without the express will and
consent of the administration. That is, the VC.
