BJP
will abolish reservation for Muslims, says Shah in Telangana
November
18, 2023
Nalgonda,
Nov 18 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah addresses during a public rally in
Nalgonda Assembly on Saturday. (ANI Photo)
--------------
Playing
the caste card, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that if voted to
power then BJP will abolish reservation for Muslims and instead increase
reservation for OBCs and STs. Shah also promised that a BJP government in the
state will also make arrangements for the people to visit Ram Mandir in Ayodhya
free of cost.
Shah
on Saturday held three public rallies before attending the meet of Madiga
Reservation PorataSamithi (MRPS) for further clarity in the issue of
sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes. Addressing rallies in Gadwal, Nalgonda
and Warangal (East) assembly constituencies, he slammed Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar
Rao and said: “KCR gave Muslim reservation on the basis of religion which is
against the Constitution. If you elect a BJP government, we will increase
reservation for the OBCs and SC/STs in place of reservation on basis of
religion.” Telangana has currently 4 per cent reservation for backward Muslims
and BJP has trained its guns on this and proposes to abolish it in favour of
OBC and SC/ST reservation.
The
Union Minister also pointed out that while BCs form 52 per cent of the
population in the state, including 135 castes, the Congress and BRS are not
ready to make a BC leader the chief minister. However, he assured BJP will
elect a BC leader as its chief minister if voted to power. He blamed Vijayshanti, G Vivekananda
and K Rajgopal Reddy for leaving BJP for Congress after it was decided that a
BC leader will be the next chief minister.
“Both
BRS and Congress were unfair to the BCs when it came to ticket distribution but
BJP gave most tickets to BC candidates. In the state’s Budget, KCR had
allocated Rs 3300 crore but only 77 crore were utilised. At the Centre, Modiji
has 27 BC ministers in his Cabinet. BJP also made Modiji the first BC Prime
Minister. Only BJP takes care of the BCs while KCR has been most unfair to
them,” he said.
Shah
also slammed the Congress, BRS and AIMIM for practising family-oriented
politics. “Congress, TRS and MIM are 2G, 3G and 4G parties. Two G means KCR and
KTR, Owaisi‘s party is 3G, there are three generations of family members.
Congress is 4G – Jawaharlal Nehru followed by Indira Gandhi then Rajiv Gandhi
and now Rahul Gandhi. Free Telangana from these parties and vote for the party
which sent Tiranga to the moon,” he said.
Dubbing
the BRS as Bhrastachar (Corruption) Rishwatkhor (bribe) Samithi, he urged the
voters to set up a BJP government. “You have to decide whether you want
development by a double engine government under the leadership of Modiji or the
lies of KCR,” he said and added: “If you elect a BJP government, it will make
arrangements for you to visit Ram Mandir in batches free of cost.”

US
lawmakers seek ‘suspension’ of assistance to Pakistan
Anwar
Iqbal
November
19, 2023
WASHINGTON:
Eleven members of the US Congress, in a letter to US Secretary of State
Anthony Blinken, have urged the Biden administration to withhold future US
assistance to Pakistan, until the country restores constitutional order and
holds free and fair elections.
The
lawmakers requested a legal determination from the Department of State under
the Leahy Laws and Section 502(b) of the Foreign Assistance Act to assess if
US-origin security assistance had facilitated human rights violations in
Pakistan.
“We
further request that future security assistance be withheld until Pakistan has
moved decisively toward the restoration of Constitutional order, including by
holding free and fair elections in which all parties are able to participate
freely,” they wrote.
The
country’s moves to further strengthen the blasphemy law also figured
prominently in the letter, which warned Secretary Blinken that the proposed
changes would be used to further tighten the noose around smaller religious
groups and minorities.
“We
are extremely concerned about the passing of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill,
2023 which will strengthen the existing blasphemy law, which has historically
been used to persecute religious minorities,” the lawmakers wrote.
They
pointed out that the bill, which is yet to be signed by the president, was
“passed in haste despite repeated calls from many lawmakers for a thorough
parliamentary procedure.”
The
letter also pointed out that on Aug. 16, eight days after the bill was passed,
a mob desecrated churches and set fire to homes of Christians in Jaranwala. It
also referred to reported protests against the bill, including by the Shia
community in Gilgit-Baltistan.
“Religious
persecution remains rampant in Pakistan, and we are concerned about future
restrictions on freedom of religion and belief should this Bill become law,”
the lawmakers warned.
The
move was initiated by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who is one of the champions of
Muslim causes in the US Congress. Other signatories include Frank Pallone Jr,
Joaquin Castro, Summer Lee, Ted W. Lieu, Dina Titus, Lloyd Doggett and Cori
Bush.
Most
of them are members of the progressive group within Congress, which played a
key role in highlighting the Palestinian issue in Washington and also
participates in protest meetings and rallies held to demand an immediate
ceasefire in Gaza.
In
its latest report on Pakistan, the US Commission on International Religious
Freedom noted that “religious minorities were especially vulnerable to
prosecution or violence based on blasphemy allegations” and “blasphemy cases
remained a substantial threat to religious freedom.”
The
report also noted that the previous government in Pakistan had “weaponised the
country’s blasphemy laws against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his
cabinet members”.
While
acknowledging Pakistan’s significance as a long-standing ally, the lawmakers
also stressed the need to address issues like restrictions on freedom of
expression, speech, and religion, enforced disappearances, military courts and
the harassment and arrest of political opponents and human rights defenders.
Addressing
ongoing harassment and arrests, the lawmakers mentioned the cases against PTI
chief Imran Khan as well, noting that he could potentially face the death
penalty for allegedly violating the Official Secrets Act.
The
letter also mentioned ImaanMazari, a human rights lawyer, who was taken from
her home at 3am without an arrest warrant after speaking at a rally against
enforced disappearances.
The
letter urged the US Embassy in Islamabad to send observers to hearings and
other legal proceedings of human rights defenders and political dissidents,
including for emblematic cases such as MsMazari, Khadija Shah and Mr Khan.
“We
believe that the United States can play a constructive role in supporting
positive change, and it is our hope that our cooperation can contribute to a
more just and equitable future for the people of Pakistan,” the lawmakers
wrote.
However,
it remains unclear how the US government, particularly the Department of State,
will respond to these concerns and whether it will impact the dynamics of the
US-Pakistan relationship.
In
Washington, the focus on human rights violations underscores the delicate
balance between geopolitical alliances and the promotion of democratic values
on the global stage. The State Department has been markedly careful while
commenting on the current political situation in Pakistan.
The
issue has been raised regularly at the State Department’s daily briefings,
where the spokesperson has carefully avoided making statements that could be
interpreted as an expression of support for either the government or the
opposition.

Hamas
chief urges Arab-Islamic committee to urgently convene to stop Israeli war

-----------
The
head of the Hamas group's political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, urged the
Arab-Islamic Committee on Saturday to urgently convene "to discuss ways to
halt the war and to break the siege on the Gaza Strip."
The
Arab-Islamic ministerial committee was formed by the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit
held in Saudi Arabia on Nov. 11 to follow up on the implementation of the
summit's outcomes to end the Israeli bloody onslaught on Gaza.
Haniyeh
stressed "the need to quickly act to oblige Israel to abide by the
international resolutions that called for ending the (Israeli) aggression on
the Palestinian people and to protect the hospitals (in Gaza)."
A
statement noted that the Hamas chief held talks with leaders and officials on
the regional and international levels in light of the Israeli "brutal
massacres" against Palestinians displaced in UN-run schools.
Israeli
air raids killed at least 50 Palestinians at the Al-Fakhoura School earlier
Saturday. The school is run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, or
UNRWA, in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.
Israel
has killed more than 12,300 Palestinians in its air and ground attacks on the
Gaza Strip since an Oct. 7 surprise offensive by the Palestinian resistance
group, Hamas. The official Israeli death toll, meanwhile, stands at about
1,200.
Thousands
of buildings, including hospitals, mosques and churches, have been damaged or
destroyed in Israel’s relentless strikes on the besieged enclave.

forgetting that they carry stories behind which are families, friends, and
dreams that have faded.
‘The
only just solution is to end the occupation and establish an independent,
sovereign Palestinian state with Holy Al-Quds as its capital,’ Al-Sunni added

KUALA
LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Agencies under the management of the Prime Minister’s
Department (Religious Affairs), including the Office of the Federal Territory
Mufti, have been told to monitor and stop the spread of the teachings by
MhdMohibKhouli Nazem as they deviated from the true teachings of Islam.
Minister
in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk MohdNa’im Mokhtar
said his office also working with the police to curb all forms of deviant
teachings.
“We
want to make sure that these teachings do not spread and pervert the beliefs of
the Muslim community in our country,” he told reporters at the ZiarahAsnaf
Series 4 programme in Wangsa Maju here today.
He
said this in response to concerns over the teachings of MhdMohibKhouli Nazem
for which an edict (fatwa) had been issued by the Terengganu Mufti Office last
Nov 16 that the teachings deviated from the true teachings of Islam.
Meanwhile,
regarding the programme today, MohdNa’im expressed the need for the local
community to play a role in helping related agencies identify those in need of
help.
“When
you see a neighbour or resident who needs help, asnaf (tithe recipients) who
are sick, inform the relevant agencies. We need the community’s cooperation.
“This
is the basis for the formation of a Madani state and society that the Prime
Minister wants. A society that always sees the hardships of others and quickly
finds ways to help,” he said.
MohdNai’im
was accompanied by the chairman of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious
Council (MAIWP) Tan Sri MohdDaud Bakar and they handed over aid to three asnaf
recipients.

BJP
leaders only raise Hindu-Muslim issue, can't point out flaws in Gehlot's

Nov
18, 2023
JAIPUR:
Congress leader Pawan Khera on Saturday said the central BJP leaders coming to
Rajasthan to campaign for the assembly elections only raise the Hindu-Muslim
issue as they cannot point out any flaws in the work done by the Ashok Gehlot
government in the last five years.
Addressing
media persons at a press conference, Khera expressed confidence that Congress
would once again come to power in the state.
"Many
union ministers and chief ministers of BJP came to Rajasthan but not a single
one talked about development. The central leaders of BJP who are coming to
Rajasthan have nothing to say against the guarantees given to the people by the
Ashok Gehlot government of Rajasthan, so they just talk about the Hindu-Muslim
issue and go away," a party statement quoted the Congress leader as
saying.

Maldives
President wants Indian military out but talks on for 'workable solution' on
choppers
Nov
19, 2023
A
day after he took oath as Maldives president, Mohamed Muizzu asked India in an
official communication to pull out its military personnel from the Indian Ocean
archipelago. The president’s office said Muizzu requested withdrawal of Indian
troops in a meeting with Indian minister Kiren Rijiju, who was in Male for the
inauguration of the president, expressing hope that India will honour the
"democratic will" of the people of the Maldives.Muizzu, however,
acknowledged the role played by Indian military choppers, which Indian
personnel help fly, in facilitating emergency medical evacuations and,
according to Indian government sources, agreed to find a ``workable solution’’
for their continued operation. Importantly for India, Muizzu called for
accelerating work on India-assisted projects, including the $ 500 million
Greater Male Connectivity Project that was launched by PM Narendra Modi and
Muizzu’s predecessor Ibrahim Solih.
"They
(the choppers) are also central to the confidence that international tourists
have staying on remote islands. He appreciated their role in monitoring and
combating drug trafficking," said an Indian source.
The
expulsion of all Indian personnel will likely render uncertain the fate of the
2 choppers and also a Dornier aircraft provided by India to the Maldives. As
president-elect, Muizzu had on several occasions said he wanted to rid Maldives
of Indian military presence, preferably in the first week of his presidency,
but the announcement on Saturday still seemed hasty, given that there is, and
by his own admission, no clarity on the number of Indian troops in the country.

Pakistan
SMOKERS’
CORNER: ZIONISM AND MUSLIM NATIONALISM
Nadeem
F. Paracha
November
19, 2023
Pakistan
and Israel are often understood by various political scientists and historians
as nationalist twins. Membership to both is based on nothing but an idea of
religious belonging. The Islam that Pakistan’s founders evoked to contextualise
the creation of a ‘Muslim nation’ in India, and then a separate Muslim
nation-state in South Asia, was not theological. It was an entirely modern
construct.
Nationalism
itself is a modern construct, not more than 350 years old. It seeks to unite
the people of a territory as a national whole — a people who share a cultural,
linguistic and geographical history. However, many of these histories too are
inventions, shaped through imagined or exaggerated ‘memories’. But the ‘Muslim
nationalism’ deployed by the founders of Pakistan was only loosely tied to a
shared cultural history. It was more of an abstract idea of unity in a South
Asian Muslim milieu that was ethnically diverse and highly sectarian and
sub-sectarian.

Envoys

November

KARACHI
/ LAHORE: In a flurry of meetings on Saturday, the envoys of the United
Kingdom and the United States have called on leaders of various political
parties, including the PPP and PML-N, ostensibly to seek their input about the
prospects for polls and their concerns about electioneering.
With
the date proposed for the general elections just two months away, US envoy
Donald Blome spent a busy day in Punjab: after a meeting with PPP leader
Yousaf Raza Gilani and a host of political leaders at a gathering in Multan, he
headed to Lahore to meet former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and
Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party leader Jahangir Khan Tareen.
On
the other hand, UK High Commissioner Jane Marriott met PPP leader Asif Ali
Zardari at Bilawal House in Karachi days after a similar meeting with Mr Sharif
in Lahore. A party statement issued after the meeting said that MrZardari and
Ms Marriott, accompanied by their aides, held a detailed discussion on a “range
of issues”.

Electables
aren’t despicable, says Sana
November
19, 2023
LAHORE:
As the general elections approach, the PML-N has intensified its efforts to
secure a strong foothold in south Punjab as well by relying on electables to
boost its chances of forming the next government — a strategy that mirrors the
party’s recent successful engagement with several influential figures in
Balochistan.
“Of
the 46 National Assembly seats in the south, we have electables on some 35,”
PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah told a presser on Saturday. “We are
feeling weak on 10 seats.”
MrSanaullah
defended the practice of awarding party tickets to such politically influential
people, stressing that “electable” was not a swear word. It was a reality that
the people trusted electables, he said.

USIP:
‘Afghanistan’s Economy Once Again Nears the Precipice’
19-11-2023
The
US Institute of Peace (USIP), after reviewing the recent reports of the World
Bank on the economic situation of Afghanistan, said that Afghanistan’s economy
once again is near "the precipice."
Senior
economic experts of USIP noted that “more than two years into Taliban rule,
Afghanistan remains one of the poorest countries in the world with some of the
highest humanitarian needs.”
“Two
recent World Bank reports — which were launched at a USIP event last week — lay
out the landscape of the Afghan economy and the situation of Afghan households.
Despite some signs of economic stability over the past year, the economy
remains weak and unable to generate the jobs and livelihoods needed to
accommodate the growing population — hence unemployment and underemployment are
widespread and increasing. Poverty remains very high, and large numbers of
Afghans are still unable to meet their basic food and non-food needs,” said
William Byrd, Senior Expert, Afghanistan.
“There
are no quick fixes to the Afghan economy, and the World Bank’s recent reports
show that demographic pressures from population growth and the return of
hundreds of thousands of refugees from Pakistan will likely outpace economic
growth in the short term. When it comes to maintaining — let alone increasing —
Western donor assistance and removing the formal and informal sanctions that
have been hindering the Afghan economy, the Taliban would have to moderate
their severe restrictions against female education and women working, which
seems most unlikely to happen in the light of past experience,” said Scott
Worden, Director, Afghanistan and Central Asia Programs said.

In
an ideal world, the announcement by Bangladesh’s Election Commission to hold

political turbulence there. Unfortunately, the persistent breakdown of

With

Jeremy
Hunt says ‘difficult decisions’ needed on benefits as he hints at inheritance
tax giveaway
By
Jane Clinton
November
18, 2023
Chancellor
Jeremy Hunt has said “difficult decisions to reform the welfare state” are
needed as he considers squeezing benefits while slashing inheritance tax in his
forthcoming autumn statement.
Mr
Hunt indicated he could reduce levies on businesses and has given his strongest
hint yet that he will use Wednesday’s financial statement to cut taxes in a bid
to boost economic growth.
During
a visit to Milton Keynes on Saturday, the chancellor would not be drawn on
reports of tax cuts but said he would “not do anything to jeopardise” the
battle against inflation after the Prime Minister’s target of halving it this
year was hit.

Argentine
Election Could Make Trump-Admiring Populist President
November
19, 2023
BUENOS
AIRES, ARGENTINA — Voters in Argentina head to the polls Sunday in a
presidential runoff election that will determine whether South America's
second-largest economy will take a rightward shift.
Populist
Javier Milei, an upstart candidate who got his start as a television talking
head, has frequently been compared to former U.S. President Donald Trump. He
faces Economy Minister Sergio Massa of the Peronist party, which has been a
leading force in Argentine politics for decades.
On
Massa's watch, inflation has soared to more than 140% and poverty has
increased. Milei, a self-described anarcho-capitalist, proposes to slash the
size of the state and rein in inflation, while Massa has warned people about
the negative impacts of such policies.
"Whatever
happens in this election will be incredible," said Lucas Romero, director
of local political consultancy Synopsis. "It would be incredible for Massa
to win in this economic context or for Milei to win facing a candidate as
professional as Massa."

Javier
Milei echoes DonaldTrump with fraud claims that inject uncertainty into
Argentina's presidential runoff
Nov
18, 2023
BUENOS
AIRES: This may sound familiar: A self-styled outsider aims to win the
presidency and purge the political establishment so he can restore order to a
broken nation - if only he can overcome a system rigged against him.
But
this isn't former president Donald Trump, or even happening in the US It's
Argentine presidential candidate Javier Milei, the latest politician to follow
Trump's playbook and claim that election results are dubious and that
gatekeepers may deprive him of the nation's top job.
Analysts
say it is a tactic to fire up Milei's base and promote vigilance at polling
stations, or set the stage for refusing to concede a loss.

Bin
Laden's 2002 letter sparks social media debate on US policies
2023-11-18
The
letter written in 2002 by Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, the
organizer of the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, came to the agenda
again during the Gaza war. In that letter, bin Laden, who was killed in a U.S.
operation in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, criticized U.S. policies and argued that
American citizens had become "slaves" of the Jews.
While
Bin Laden's "Letter to America" broke sharing records on TikTok, The
Guardian newspaper removed the link to the letter. The hashtag #lettertoamerica
of the letter, whose videos TikTok banned, was removed from the search engine.
According to the New York Times, the hashtag on TikTok was searched about 14.2
million times.
After
reading Bin Laden's letter, certain TikTok users contended that his criticism
of the U.S. was justified. Users expressed sentiments like "I can never
look at the U.S. in the same way anymore" and "He realized that the
U.S. is the scourge of the world."
