May, 2024
Guwahati:
At rally after rally in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dances and
twirls and claps, swaying along with supporters to the BJP theme song ‘Akou
Ebar Modi Sarkar’ (Modi government, again). But there’s been a change in his
campaign tune lately. From taking an assertive Hindutva stance in the first
phase of elections, he now launches into his happy dance to win over people,
especially Muslim voters.
Over
the last few days, regional newspapers have been publishing front-page stories
on Sarma drawing huge crowds with his dance moves and theatrics in
constituencies with substantial Muslim populations, from central Assam’s Nagaon
to Darrang-Udalguri in the north.
“I
am confident of the BJP winning at least 20 percent of Muslim votes in Assam,”
he told ThePrint Wednesday.
Sarma’s
enthusiasm to court Muslim voters is a relatively new development in the
campaign, evident only since the run-up to the second phase of elections in
Assam, where voting is being held in three phases for the 14 seats—19 April, 26
April, and 7 May.
Political
analysts peg the shift in strategy to the demographic make-up of the
constituencies that are voting across the different phases.
“After
campaigning in Upper Assam and showcasing its commitment to Hinduism in the
first phase, the BJP changed its strategies for the three minority-dominated
constituencies of Nagaon, Mangaldoi (now Darrang-Udalguri with changes in its
boundaries), and Karimganj,” said political analyst Adip Phukan. “The second
phase saw a complete reversal of narrative—he is now looking at convincing the
Muslim voters with promises galore.”
This
election, the BJP fighting in 11 seats and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)
and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are contesting in the remainder.
In
the 2019 elections, the BJP won 9 out of the 10 seats it contested, losing only
in Nagaon to the Congress, where over half the population is Muslim. Its allies
failed to win any seats.
Now, Sarma is determined for the BJP-led NDA
to secure 11 seats or more, aiming to “prove better performance under his
leadership”, according to Phukan.
Days
before polling in Nagaon during the second phase of voting, CM Sarma tweeted a
video of a rapturous crowd—the electorate dancing along with him in Rupahihat,
one of the constituency’s assembly segments. He pointed out that the seat was
won continuously by “non-BJP” entities since 1957, but hinted that this was
about to change now.
However,
political analysts say that the BJP is well aware that capturing
Muslim-majority constituencies like Nagaon (57 percent Muslim), Karimganj (53
percent), and Dhubri (79 percent) won’t be a breeze. These areas have been
strongholds of the Congress and AIUDF for decades.
“While
the BJP feels it can win hands down in Upper Assam, it is not so confident in
central Assam’s Nagaon, Lower Assam in the Brahmaputra Valley, and Cachar and
Hailakandi in the Barak Valley due to the population profiles,” said political
analyst and former Assam director general of police Harekrishna Deka.
Muslim
‘appeasement’ strategy
With
the BJP targeting more seats and bigger margins this election, the timing of
Sarma’s whirling and twirling in certain Muslim-dominated areas is strategic.
In
Assam, Muslims—including indigenous Assamese Muslims, Hindi-speaking Muslims,
and those of Bengali origin, the largest subgroup—constitute over 34 percent of
the population (per the 2011 Census). For each of these groups, the party has
followed a calibrated strategy.
Before
the first phase of polling— in Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Kaziranga, and
Sonitpur— Sarma might not have seen the need to specifically court Muslim
voters, according to political analysts.
“The
Upper Assam region, which went to polls in the first phase, has a small
population of indigenous Muslims, who might likely stand with the government,
especially after the announcement of a census on indigenous Muslims last year,”
noted Phukan.
Phukan
was referring to the Assam cabinet’s approval last December of a socio-economic
survey of the state’s indigenous Assamese Muslims, or “Khilonjiya” as they are
called. This proposed survey, aimed at informing policy decisions to improve
their conditions, includes the Syed, Goriya, Moriya, Desi, and Julha
communities.
Then,
in the second phase of polling, several constituencies with a sizeable
Bengali-speaking Muslim population, such as Karimganj, Nagaon, and
Darrang-Udalguri, went to vote. Dhubri, which also has a substantial Bengali
Muslim community, will go to the polls in the third phase.
And
it’s this Bengali-speaking Muslim community, known locally as ‘Miya,’ that
Sarma has made the biggest song and dance about, despite not having a
particularly warm relationship with them before.
For
instance, last October, Sarma said that the BJP does not need the votes of
“Miya” people for the next 10 years. However, by the end of March this year, he
claimed that the “daughters, women, and youths of the Miya community will vote
for the BJP this time”.
The
only constituency with a substantial Bengali Muslim population that the BJP has
refrained from campaigning in is Dhubri, an AIUDF bastion since 2009, analysts
said. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal was first elected a parliamentarian from this
seat, previously held by the Congress. This time around, party workers are
rallying behind AGP’s Zabed Islam. Speculation is rife about a tacit
understanding between the BJP and Ajmal.
Other
than Dhubri, the last phase of voting will also see Guwahati, Barpeta, and
Kokrajhar decide their mandate on 7 May.
“Among
the four constituencies in the third phase, only Guwahati seems to comfortably
rest with the BJP. The educated indigenous Assamese Muslim voters in Guwahati
cannot be convinced to vote for the BJP unlike the Bengali-origin Muslims,”
said Phukan.
According
to him, Sarma turning on the charm now is merely “political arithmetic” for
electoral gain, adding that the party is willing to shift its ideology for
votes.
“From
hurting religious sentiments of minorities to now nursing their emotions, it is
appeasement politics that the BJP resorted to during the second phase of
campaigning,” he said. “Himanta Biswa Sarma knows political arithmetic well,
and keeps devising strategies at various points. But his current strategy may
not translate into massive support from Muslims as portrayed. People understand
poll gimmicks.”
Crucial
Nagaon seat
Since
the redrawing of electoral boundaries in 2023, the number of Muslim voters in
the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat has increased considerably. With the assembly constituencies
of Dhing, Batadrava, Rupohihat, and Samaguri being moved from Kaliabor to
Nagaon, Muslims now represent about 57.57 percent (11 lakh) of the electorate,
up from around 45 percent (8 lakh) previously.
This
demographic shift presents a renewed challenge for the BJP. In the 2019
election, Congress’ Pradyut Bordoloi won against BJP’s Rupak Sharma by a margin
of 16,000 votes. This election, Bordoloi faces Suresh Borah, a Congress
turncoat who joined BJP last November.
Historically,
the Nagaon seat has changed hands between three parties. It remained under
Congress control for nearly 25 years post-independence, later shifting to the
Asom Gana Parishad. The BJP then tasted success here, with Rajen Gohain winning
four consecutive terms from 1999 to 2014.
In
the lead-up to the second phase of voting on 26 April, CM Sarma spoke at
rallies in the Samaguri and Rupahihat assembly segments of Nagaon, attracting
huge crowds, with many attendees jiving along with the nimble-footed CM.
When
ThePrint visited Nagaon’s Dhing last month, people from different villages were
moving from place to place to attend various rallies. Some travelled as far as
10-12km in bicycles, chasing helicopters that landed at campaign grounds and
catching up with friends.
However,
37-year-old Safikul Haque Mollah of Dhing’s Kadamoni Gaon said that too much
should not be read into the number of people a rally drew.
“Elections
are like festivals,” he said. “People are drawn to poll campaigns because of
the colours and sounds.”
‘Muslims
are with us’— say all parties
From
the AIUDF and Congress to the BJP, all parties claim to have the support of
Assam’s Bengali-speaking Muslim voters, albeit for varying reasons.
Speaking
to ThePrint, AIUDF Spokesperson Haider Hussain Bora claimed that since Himanta
Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister in May 2021, the state government has
seen a backlash from the minority community for “targeting and harassing” the
“Miya Muslim” population.
“BJP
leaders had earlier said that entering the minority areas of Nagaon, Darrang,
Barpeta, and Dhubri districts felt like stepping into Bangladesh or Pakistan,”
he said. “And ironically, they require Muslim votes from these very places. No
matter how sweet his (Chief Minister) speeches may sound now, Muslims haven’t
forgotten anything.”
However,
AIUDF general secretary and MLA Aminul Islam conceded that a small section of
Muslims who earlier supported the Congress may vote for the BJP this time.
“It
is the poorer section of the Muslims who are joining the BJP for all the
inducements it has to offer, but even then, they won’t get 10 percent of Muslim
votes,” he said.
For
incumbent Congress MP from Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque, the biggest obstacle to
Sarma’s wooing tactics was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks about
Muslims and mangalsutras in Rajasthan.
“(The
BJP) needs votes, especially for Karimganj and Nagaon. For this reason, the
Chief Minister has resorted to Muslim appeasement. But while Sarma is busy
campaigning in minority areas, the Prime Minister talks about ‘Mangalsutra’
politics,” Khaleque said.
Meanwhile,
senior Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev told ThePrint that a section of
Muslims fear they may lose benefits or be evicted “if they don’t vote for the
BJP”.
Dev
also recalled the 2016 assembly elections, when Sarma had called the contest
the Battle of Saraighat—where Ahom kings defeated the Mughals. “Now, he doesn’t
talk about Saraighat anymore,” she said. “After consistently denigrating the
minority community, (Sarma) is literally begging them to vote.”
Suranjan
Dutta, a BJP leader from Assam, admitted that the Nagaon and Karimganj Lok
Sabha seats remained a challenge for the BJP, but also claimed that its Muslim
support base has increased.
“Muslims
are supporting us because of our development initiatives — everyone has got
equal benefits under Central and state government schemes. Farmers of
Kharupetia and Dalgaon in Darrang district, Pathsala town in Barpeta have all
benefited under the PM-KISAN scheme. These people have moved beyond the lies
spread by the Congress and AIUDF that BJP is a communal party,” said
Dutta. “Muslim women are happy with the
government for not allowing child marriage in Assam.”
Political
analyst Janardhan Barman concurred that government schemes had led to more
Muslims gravitating towards the BJP, especially in rural areas.
“For
the first time in Assam, a section of the Muslim community has come forward in
support of the BJP. There’s an unprecedented enthusiasm on the ground among
these people,” he claimed.
He
warned, however, that “appeasement politics” at the cost of “indigenous
communities” could cost the BJP. “Assam has so many ethnic communities,
conflicting narratives, and many aspirations. But it is expected of the BJP to
not move away from the indigenous communities,” he said. “Appeasement politics
will have its full implications as seen with the Congress government in the
past.”

Student Islamic Religious Teachers Oppose Israel, View Jews As Enemies – Study

A
new study, entitled “Prospective Islamic Theologians and Islamic religious
teachers in Germany: between fundamentalism and reform orientation,” performed
by German professors, indicates that a significant number of student Islamic
religious teachers oppose Israel's existence and view Jews as enemies.
This
study was the first German-wide investigation of Islamic theology and religious
education students. Those who ran the study examined how “these prospective
multipliers approach Islam in a reform-oriented manner,” according to the
study.
The
study was conducted by the Center for Islamic Theology at the University of
Münster in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany.
The
professors surveyed 252 students from eleven different universities. They
revealed high levels of Islamist views among those who responded to the survey
questions.
Comments
by a leading researcher
Dr.
Franziska Kraufmann, one of the lead researchers involved in the study,
commented, "These findings raise concerns about the potential impact of
such attitudes on religious education in schools."
The
results of the study show that 47.2 % do not believe Israel has a right to
exist, and among the respondents, 37.3%
somewhat or strongly agreed that Jews have too much power and influence in the
world.
Additionally,
22.2% prefer the "Islamization" of politics, with 25 % supporting the
Islamization of legal systems and 22.6% endorsing an Islamist gender hierarchy.
The
results of the study show that 55.9% of respondents in the survey believe poor
living conditions in many Islamic countries are due to Western interference.
"These
students are poised to become educators tasked with imparting Islamic teachings
to future generations,” said Dr. Franziska Kraufmann. "We're witnessing
the emergence of a cohort of teachers espousing reactionary, antisemitic, and
Islamist ideologies. We cannot underestimate the impact of educators who harbor
extremist views on impressionable young minds,” she cautioned.

Daesh
Does 'Not Exist' in Afghanistan: IEA Intelligence
Rahmatullah Najib, the Deputy Director of General
Intelligence of the Islamic Emirate,
-----
By
TOLOnews, TV Network

May 2024
Rahmatullah
Najib, the Deputy Director of General Intelligence of the Islamic Emirate, said
that Daesh has been significantly suppressed in Afghanistan.
Najib
said there were Daesh operations under the previous government and said that
with the return to power of the Islamic Emirate, the activities of this group
have nearly ceased.
In
a public meeting in Kabul, the intelligence official said that Daesh no longer
has the capacity to carry out major attacks in the country.
The
Deputy Director of General Intelligence stated, “We assure you that Daesh does
not exist in Afghanistan; however, sometimes when they operate secretly, both
we and you must be vigilant.”
On
the other hand, the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction
(SIGAR), in its quarterly report, wrote that the expansion of Daesh-Khorasan's
attacks increases global threats.
According
to the SIGAR report, this Daesh branch has carried out attacks in the last
three months, including in Russia, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey.
Zalmay
Afghanyar, a military affairs expert, said: “If the world is truly frightened
by this matter, it should compel Afghanistan's neighboring countries to
dismantle camps within their territories so as not to impact us. An
international cooperation is needed in the fight against terrorism.”
Previously,
the U.S. Department of State emphasized the interim government's fight against
terrorist groups and added that their country must ensure that Afghanistan does
not become a safe haven for terrorists.

Labour
“Set to Lose in West Midlands” as Muslims Desert Party Over Gaza
Photo: The Daily Sceptic
-----
3 MAY 2024
Labour
is set to lose the West Midlands Mayoral election because of anger among Muslim
voters over its stance on Gaza, party sources fear, adding to the shock loss in
Oldham and struggles elsewhere. The Telegraph has more.
Insiders
warned that a marked shift in support amongst the city’s Muslim population
could cost them their chance of victory.
They
said Muslim voters had swung heavily behind an independent candidate, backed by
George Galloway, who campaigned predominantly on Gaza.
A
failure to unseat Andy Street, the Tory mayor of the West Midlands, would
represent a setback for Sir Keir Starmer after otherwise good local elections
for his party.
A
loss would raise more questions over how his stance on Gaza, especially his
early refusal to back a ceasefire, has damaged Labour’s standing among Muslims.
While
the election took place on Thursday, the votes are not set to be counted until
Saturday, when the result will be announced at around 3pm.
Surveys
ahead of the race suggested that it was neck-and-neck with Richard Parker, the
Labour candidate, polling just two points behind Mr. Street.
But
it appears the Labour campaign has been derailed by Akhmed Yakoob [pictured],
the independent who has been backed by Mr Galloway’s Workers Party of Britain.
…
Failure
to win the Mayoralty would represent another blow after Labour lost control of
Oldham council and struggled for support in Bolton and parts of Newcastle.
In
all three places, it faced challenges from pro-Palestinian independents and the
Greens, who have called for an arms export embargo on Israel.
Defeated
councillors in Oldham said anger over Sir Keir’s stance on Gaza had been a
decisive factor in the loss of several seats to independents.
Darren
Jones, the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, admitted the loss of support
amongst Muslim voters was worrying for the party.
Worth
reading in full.
It
could be that this is a kicking in the local elections that voters won’t give
in the General Election. But either way, it shows that the Israel-Palestine
conflict is at the very top of concerns for many Muslims and that this is a
threat to Labour’s long-cultivated multicultural support base.
Stop
Press: Labour has become embroiled in an internal racism row after a party
source told BBC Midlands Today: “It’s the Middle East, not West Midlands that
will have won Street the Mayoralty. Once again Hamas are the real villains.”
MPs have claimed the remark conflates Muslim voters with Hamas and the central
Labour party has distanced itself from the “racist” comment.

Spain’s
Newly-Found ‘Sword in the Stone’ Actually Reflects on its Rich Islamic
Heritage, Not King Arthur
Archaeology Service of the Valencia City Council –
released.
-----
May
3, 2024
Like
the mythical Excalibur sword of King Arthur, a relic from 1,000 years ago was
recently found lodged upright in a stone in Spain.
But
while Arthur quested for the Holy Grail and gathered knight-brothers of the
church on his holy mission, the sword in the stone in Spain was wielded by a
Muslim.
Found
30 years ago buried upright at an archaeological site in Valencia, the sword
has been restored and analyzed, with its secrets now revealed for the first
time.
‘Excalibur’
is a short iron sword measuring 18 inches, (46 centimeters) with an ornate
handle, that clasped the blade with bronze plates. The blade itself is of
moderate size and curves slightly towards the tip, which has caused some
confusion about the exact chronology since the Visigoth swords had a similar
shape.
The
sedimentary strata where it was found on the historic Chabas Steet however date
it to Islamic times. The size of the weapon and the absence of a hand guard
suggest that it may have been used by a horseman from the Andalusian caliphal
era.
It
is the first Islamic sword to appear in the city, according to a statement from
the city council, and there is only one similar sword that was found in the
excavations of Madinat al-Zahra, the caliphal city of Abd al-Rahman III, in
Córdoba.

Islamic
control of the Iberian Peninsula lasted more than 600 years, but it was

called it Al-Andalus, which provided the name for the modern region of Spain,

Along
with establishing several prominent cities such as Cordoba, Malaga, and

Congress
Plans To Handover Property To Those Involved In 'Vote Jihad': PM Modi In
Jharkhand
May
03, 2024
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused the Congress of planning to allocate
property to those involved in "vote jihad" while affirming that no
power on earth would be permitted to alter the Constitution. "Congress
wants to distribute your property to those indulging in 'Vote Jihad' but Modi
will ensure that the poor, dalit and tribals have the first right on the
country's property. No force on earth would be allowed to change or alter our
Constitution," the PM said while addressing the ' ..
Hitting
out at the JMM-led coalition in the state, the PM said it was patronising
infiltration in Santhal Parganas and indulged in vote bank politics akin to
neighbouring West Bengal.
"This
has resulted in a decrease in tribal population there. Our women are not safe.
The JMM and Congress are usurping tribal land. They have even not spared Army
land. Their leaders are neck-deep in corruption whether it be liquor, mining or
sand. They are looting Jharkhand's mineral resources," the PM said.
Modi
added that it was the BJP which created a separate Jharkhand state whereas JMM
has joined hands with such political leaders of INDIA bloc which used to say
that a separate state can be created over their dead bodies.
"Such
forces were responsible for Jungle Raj in Bihar and are now active in
Jharkhand," he added.
He
sought votes for party candidates in two Scheduled Tribe reserved Lok Sabha
constituencies - Singhbhum and Khunti. The party has fielded sitting MP Geeta
Kora, who recently switched to BJP from Congress, from Singhbhum and Union
Minister Arjun Munda from Khunti.
Modi
is on a two-day visit to Jharkhand beginning Friday, during which he will also
address two election rallies in Palamu and Gumla on Saturday.

Situation
Of Muslims In Today's India Is That Of The Jews In Germany During Hitler's Era:
Asaduddin Owaisi
03
May 2024
All
India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the
situation of Muslims in today's India is similar to that of the Jews in Germany
during dictator Adolf Hitler's era.
"The
position of Muslims in today's India is the same as the situation which Jews
witnessed or experienced during Hitler's era in the 1930s," Owaisi said in
an interview with news agency ANI.
He
was quoted as saying, "The gas chamber was the last step. Before that,
movies were made, hate speeches took place; there was a whole process to
it."
Owaisi
also slammed Prime Minister Modi over his "infiltrators" remark
during an election rally in Rajasthan. PM Modi had alleged that the Congress
plans to give people's hard-earned money and valuables to
"infiltrators" and "those who have more children".
Criticising
PM Modi for this statement, Owaisi told ANI, "Our PM is saying that
Mangalsutra will be removed from Hindu women and given to Muslims. 17 crore
Muslims are being called infiltrators."
"Whether
Modi ji remains or not, the country will remain. The Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
among Muslim women has fallen, this is the government's own data," Owaisi
said.
"To
win an election, you are calling all minorities infiltrators. Hitler also used
to say the same thing to Jews that they were not original Germans. Does this
language suit the Prime Minister?" Owaisi was quoted by ANI as saying.
Owaisi
went on to say that he is ready to prove with suitable data that Muslims are
the poorest in the country.
"Is
Modi the Prime Minister of only Hindus? They have a fight with Congress, why
are we (Muslims) being brought in between? PM should tell that Muslims are the

BJP
leaders react
BJP
leader Mohsin Raza criticized Owaisi, saying, "He needs to assess his
area. He is the biggest Hitler in his area." Raza alleged that Owaisi
"himself behaves like a Hitler".
"Under
the leadership of PM Modi, the Muslim community is developing and getting
benefits from the schemes... They (Congress) have only looted the Muslims...
Only Asaduddin Owaisi is talking about the Hindu-Muslim issue. No other Muslim
is talking about it...," Raza said.
Meanwhile,
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy said, "Hindu and Muslim are equal in this
nation. We are not against any religion. But, the PM has referred only to the

‘In
recent years, Muslims' experience has not been good’: Shashi Tharoor's jibe at
BJP
May
03, 2024
Congress
MP and the party's candidate from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor has
claimed that the experience of Muslims in recent years under BJP-led government
at the Centre is not good. Tharoor's remarks have come after All India
Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi compared the
situtation of Muslims in India to that of Jews in Germany during dictator Adolf
Hitler's era.
In
an interaction with news agency ANI, Tharoor criticised the BJP-led government
for not having a Muslim minister in the Cabinet. He also accused the BJP of
wanting to change the identity of the nation.
"In
recent years, the experience of Muslims has not been good. This is happening
for the first time in this country that no Muslim is an MP in Lok Sabha and
Rajya Sabha. No Muslim is a minister in the cabinet. This is a wrong thing that
the BJP has done," said Tharoor.
"Our
(Congress) government was the reflection of the whole nation. But, they want to
change the identity of the nation with their slogan of 'Hind, Hindu, Hindutva'.
This is not good," he added.
What
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said
In
an interview with news agency ANI, Asaduddin Owaisi said, "The position of
Muslims in today's India is the same as the situation which Jews witnessed or
experienced during Hitler's era in the 1930s. The gas chamber was the last
step, before that movies were made, hate speeches took place, there was a whole
process to it."
Owaisi
also slammed PM Modi's recent 'Mangalsutra' remarks in criticism of Congress'
manifesto and claimed that the Prime Minister termed all minorities as
"infiltrators".
"Our
PM is saying that Mangalsutra will be removed from Hindu women and given to
Muslims. 17 crore Muslims are being called infiltrators. Whether Modi ji will remain
or not, the country will remain. The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) among Muslim
women has fallen, this is the government's own data. To win an election you are
calling all minorities as infiltrators. Hitler also used to say the same thing
to Jews that they were not original Germans. Does this language suit the Prime
Minister?" Owaisi said.

Palestinian
Resistance Factions: Yemen's Courageous Positions Represent Position That All
Arabs, MuslimsMust Adopt, Work With
[03/May/2024]
GAZA
May 3. 2024 (Saba) - The Palestinian resistance factions praised the Yemeni
people and the positions of the leadership of the Ansar Allah movement and the
Yemeni armed forces, stressing that "these courageous and heroic positions
represent the position that all Arabs and Muslims must adopt and work
with."
The
factions said in a statement that "these courageous and heroic positions
represent the position that all Arabs and Muslims must adopt and work with, and
we salute the Yemeni people in all its factions and living factions, as well as
Saayd. Abdul Malik Al-Houthi and the Ansar Allah movement, which leads the
Yemeni movement in support of the Palestinian cause."
"The
Palestinian resistance factions have followed with pride the major popular
marches in which the Yemeni people came out to express their originality and
courage and to affirm on behalf of all Arabs and Muslims that the cause of Palestine
is the central issue of the entire nation, and nothing can prevent the Arab and
Islamic conscience from responding to the call of Palestine and performing its
duty to support it, support its people and its valiant resistance," she
added.
In
her statement, she pointed out that "the practical translation of these
positions has come with deeds before words through what the Yemeni armed forces
announced about the start of a new phase of escalation and work to cut off the
supply lines of the Zionist entity and its supporters until the genocidal war
against Gaza in particular and Palestine in general is stopped.
The
Palestinian factions called on "peoples, forces and currents in the Arab
and Islamic world to support and endorse the Yemeni positions because of the
advanced and practical position they represent in the face of aggression, the
war of genocide and the threats of the Zionist enemy to launch a ground attack
against the city of Rafah."

30,000
worshippers perform Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque
[03/May/2024]
OCCUPIED
AL-QUDS May 03. 2024 (Saba) - Tens of thousands of Palestinians on Friday
performed Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque, despite the obstacles and
tightening imposed by the Zionist enemy forces in the vicinity of the Old City
and the mosque.
The
Islamic Waqf Department in al-Quds said that 30,000 worshippers performed
Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque and the absent prayer for the souls of the
martyrs.
The
enemy forces deployed in the streets of al-Quds and the vicinity of the Old
City andaAl-Aqsa Mosque, erecting dozens of iron barriers at the entrances to
the gates, and closing some streets and roads to prevent worshipers from
reaching the mosque.
The
forces stopped dozens of young men at the gates of the Old City and al-Aqsa
Mosque to examine their IDs, searched some of them and prevented others from
entering.
The
Zionist enemy forces imposed restrictions and tightening on the entry of
worshipers to al-Aqsa Mosque at dawn on Friday and prevented young men from
entering it, forcing them to perform dawn prayers near al-Youssoufia cemetery
in the Lions Gate.
Those
deported from al-Aqsa Mosque performed Friday prayers on the Mujahideen Road
near the Lions Gate in the city's Old City.
Al-Aqsa
Mosque speaker, the Grand Mufti of al-Quds, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, said,
"Working to sabotage mosques is injustice, and no one is more unjust than
those who destroy mosques, and deprive those kneeling and prostrating from
worship, and there is no darker than those who destroy mosques in Gaza, and
deprive our people of medicine and food."
Hussein
stressed that al-Aqsa Mosque suffers great injustice from those who do not
reside and violate all international laws, regulations and laws, and attack
mosques and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
"Al-Aqsa
Mosque still suffers from abuse from extremists and various extremist
organisations, as they were blinded by their racism, and they did not like the
reconstruction of al-Aqsa Mosque with worshipers," he said.
"Extremist
groups are tempted by aggression against our people and failure of Arabs and
Muslims to support al-Aqsa Mosque," he added.

The
UN warns Sudan’s warring parties that Darfur risks starvation and death if aid
is not allowed in
May
04, 2024
UNITED
NATIONS: The United Nations food agency warned Sudan’s warring parties Friday
that there is a serious risk of widespread starvation and death in Darfur and
elsewhere in Sudan if they don’t allow humanitarian aid into the vast western
region.
Leni
Kinzli, the World Food Programme’s regional spokesperson, said at least 1.7
million people in Darfur were experiencing emergency levels of hunger in
December, and the number “is expected to be much higher today.”
“Our
calls for humanitarian access to conflict hotspots in Sudan have never been
more critical,” she told a virtual UN press conference from Nairobi.
Sudan
plunged into chaos in mid-April 2023, when long-simmering tensions between its
military led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support
Forces commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, broke out into street battles in
the capital, Khartoum. Fighting has spread to other parts of the country,
especially urban areas and the Darfur region.
The
paramilitary forces, known as the RSF, have gained control of most of Darfur
and are besieging El Fasher, the only capital in Darfur they don’t hold, where
some 500,000 civilians had taken refuge.
Kinzli
said WFP’s partners on the ground report that the situation in El Fasher is “extremely
dire” and it’s difficult for civilians wanting to flee the reported RSF
bombings and shelling to leave.
She
said the violence in El Fasher and surrounding North Darfur is exacerbating the
critical humanitarian needs in the entire Darfur region, where crop production
for staple cereals like wheat, sorghum and millet is 78 percent less than the
five-year average.
On
top of the impact of escalating violence, Kinzli said, “WFP is concerned that
hunger will increase dramatically as the lean season between harvests sets in
and people run out of food.” She said a farmer in El Fasher recently told her
that her family had already run out of food stocks and is living day-to-day, an
indication that the “lean season,” which usually starts in May, started earlier.
Kinzli
said she received photos earlier Friday from colleagues on the ground of
severely malnourished children in a camp for displaced people in Central
Darfur, as well as older people “who have nothing left but skin and bones.”
“Recent
reports from our partners indicate that 20 children have died in recent weeks
of malnutrition in that IDP camp,” she said.
“People
are resorting to consuming grass and peanut shells,” Kinzli said. “And if
assistance doesn’t reach them soon, we risk witnessing widespread starvation
and death in Darfur and across other conflict-affected areas in Sudan.”
Kinzli
called for “a concerted diplomatic effort by the international community to
push the warring parties to provide access and safety guarantees” for
humanitarian staff and convoys.
“One
year of this devastating conflict in Sudan has created an unprecedented hunger
catastrophe and threatens to ignite the world’s largest hunger crisis,” she warned.
“With almost 28 million people facing food insecurity across Sudan, South Sudan
and Chad, the conflict is spilling over and exacerbating the challenges that
we’ve already been facing over the last year.”
In
March, Sudanese authorities revoked WFP’s permission to deliver aid from
neighboring Chad to West Darfur and Central Darfur from the town of Adre,
saying that crossing had been used to transfer weapons to the RSF. Kinzli said
restrictions from Sudanese authorities in Port Sudan are also preventing WFP
from transporting aid via Adre.
Sudanese
authorities approved the delivery of aid from the Chadian town of Tina to North
Darfur, but Kinzli said WFP can no longer use that route for security reasons
because it goes directly into besieged El Fasher.
On
Thursday, gunmen in South Darfur killed two drivers for the International
Committee of the Red Cross and injured three ICRC staff members. On Friday, UN
humanitarian chief Martin Griffith called the killing of aid works
“unconscionable.”
Kinzli
said the fighting “and endless bureaucratic hurdles” have prevented WFP from
delivering aid to over 700,000 people in Darfur ahead of the rainy season when
many roads become impassable.
“WFP
currently has 8,000 tons of food supplies ready to move in Chad, ready to transport,
but is unable to do so because of these constraints,” she said.
“WFP
urgently requires unrestricted access and security guarantees to deliver
assistance,” she said. “And we must be able to use the Adre border crossing,
and move assistance across front lines from Port Sudan in the east to Darfur so
we can reach people in this desperate region.”

Hamas
‘only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire’: Blinken
May
04, 2024
WASHINGTON:
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Hamas was the only holdup to a Gaza
ceasefire as the militants prepared to send a delegation back to Cairo on
Saturday for talks.
“We
wait to see whether, in effect, they can take yes for an answer on the
ceasefire and release of hostages,” Blinken said late Friday.
“The
reality in this moment is the only thing standing between the people of Gaza
and a ceasefire is Hamas.”
Blinken
pointed to difficulties in negotiating with Hamas, which the United States
considers a terrorist group and does not engage with directly and which Israel
has vowed to eliminate.
“The
leaders of Hamas that we’re indirectly engaged with — through the Qataris,
through the Egyptians — are, of course, living outside of Gaza,” Blinken said.
“The
ultimate decision-makers are the folks who are actually in Gaza itself with
whom none of us have direct contact.”
Blinken
was addressing a dinner at the McCain Institute’s Sedona Forum in Arizona two
days after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top
leaders on his latest visit to the Middle East.
Ahead
of his talks with Blinken, Netanyahu vowed to push ahead with an assault on the
southern Gaza city of Rafah to root out Hamas regardless of the outcome of
negotiations for a temporary ceasefire that would involve the release of
hostages.
President
Joe Biden’s administration has repeatedly warned Netanyahu’s government against
moving on Rafah, where some 1.4 million Palestinians have taken shelter after
fleeing the Israeli assault in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas.
Blinken
said that Israel, which counts on the United States for military and diplomatic
support, has yet to present “a credible plan to genuinely protect the civilians
who are in harm’s way” in Rafah.
“Absent
such a plan, we can’t support a major military operation going into Rafah
because the damage it would do is beyond what’s acceptable,” Blinken said.

UN
official warns that famine in northern Gaza is already ‘full-blown’
May
04, 2024
WASHINGTON:
A top UN official said Friday that hard-hit northern Gaza was now in
“full-blown famine” after more than six months of war between Israel and Hamas
and severe Israeli restrictions on food deliveries to the Palestinian
territory.
Cindy
McCain, the American director of the UN World Food Program, became the most
prominent international official so far to declare that trapped civilians in
the most cut-off part of Gaza had gone over the brink into famine.
“It’s
horror,” McCain told NBC’s “Meet the Press” in an interview to air Sunday.
“There is famine — full-blown famine — in the north, and it’s moving its way
south.”
She
said a ceasefire and a greatly increased flow of aid through land and sea
routes was essential to confronting the growing humanitarian catastrophe in
Gaza, home to 2.3 million people.
There
was no immediate comment from Israel, which controls entrance into Gaza and
says it is beginning to allow in more food and other humanitarian aid through
land crossings.
The
panel that serves as the internationally recognized monitor for food crises
said earlier this year that northern Gaza was on the brink of famine and likely
to experience it this month. The next update will not come before this summer.
One
of the US Agency for International Development’s humanitarian officials in Gaza
told The Associated Press that on-the-ground preparations for a new US-led sea
route were on track to bring in more food — including treatment for hundreds of
thousands of starving children — by early or mid-May. That’s when the American
military expects to finish building a floating pier to receive the shipments.
Ramping
up the delivery of aid on the planned US-backed sea route will be gradual as
aid groups test the distribution and security arrangements for relief workers,
the USAID official said.
The
official spoke on condition of anonymity over security concerns for work done
in a conflict zone. They were some of the agency’s first comments on the status
of preparations for the Biden administration’s $320 million Gaza pier project,
for which USAID is helping coordinate on-the-ground security and distribution.
At
a factory in rural Georgia on Friday, USAID Administrator Samantha Power
pointed to the food crises in Gaza and other parts of the world as she
announced a $200 million investment aimed at increasing production of emergency
nutritional paste for starving children under 5.
Power
spoke to factory workers, peanut farmers and local dignitaries sitting among
pallets of the paste at the Mana nonprofit in Fitzgerald. It is one of two
factories in the US that produces the nutritional food, which is used in
clinical settings and made from ground peanuts, powdered milk, sugar and oil,
ready to eat in plastic pouches resembling large ketchup packets.
“This
effort, this vision meets the moment,” Power said. “And it could not be more
timely, more necessary or more important.”
Under
pressure from the US and others, Israeli officials in recent weeks have begun
slowly reopening some border crossings for relief shipments.
But
aid coming through the sea route, once it’s operational, still will serve only
a fraction — half a million people — of those who need help in Gaza. Aid
organizations including USAID stress that getting more aid through border
crossings is essential to staving off famine.
Children
under 5 are among the first to die when wars, droughts or other disasters
curtail food. Hospital officials in northern Gaza reported the first deaths
from hunger in early March and said most of the dead were children.
Power
said the UN has called for 400 metric tons of the nutritional paste “in light
of the severe hunger that is pervading across Gaza right now, and the severe,
acute humanitarian crisis.” USAID expects to provide a quarter of that, she
said.
Globally,
she said at the Georgia factory, the treatment made there “will save untold
lives, millions of lives.”
USAID
is coordinating with the World Food Program and other humanitarian partners and
governments on security and distribution for the pier project, while US
military forces finish building it. President Joe Biden, under pressure to do
more to ease the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza as the US provides military
support for Israel, announced the project in early March.
US
Central Command said in a statement Friday that offshore assembly of the
floating pier has been temporarily paused due to high winds and sea swells,
which caused unsafe conditions for soldiers. The partially built pier and the
military vessels involved have gone to Israel’s Port of Ashdod, where the work
will continue.
A
US official said the high seas will delay the installation for several days,
possibly until later next week. The official, who spoke on condition of
anonymity to discuss operation details, said the pause could last longer if the
bad weather continues because military personnel and divers have to get into
the water for the final installation.
The
struggles this week with the first aid delivery through a newly reopened land
corridor into north Gaza underscored the uncertainty about security and the
danger still facing relief workers. Israeli settlers blocked the convoy before
it crossed Wednesday. Once inside Gaza, the convoy was commandeered by Hamas
militants, before UN officials reclaimed it.
In
Gaza, the nutritional treatment for starving children is most urgently needed
in the northern part of the Palestinian territory. Civilians have been cut off
from most aid supplies, bombarded by Israeli airstrikes and driven into hiding
by fighting.
Acute
malnutrition rates there among children under 5 have surged from 1 percent
before the war to 30 percent five months later, the USAID official said. The
official called it the fastest such climb in hunger in recent history, more
than in grave conflicts and food shortages in Somalia or South Sudan.
One
of the few medical facilities still operating in northern Gaza, Kamal Adwan
hospital, is besieged by parents bringing in thousands of children with
malnutrition for treatment, the official said. Aid officials believe many more
starving children remain unseen and in need, with families unable to bring them
through fighting and checkpoints for care.
Saving
the gravely malnourished children in particular requires both greatly increased
deliveries of aid and sustained calm in fighting, the official said, so that
aid workers can set up treatment facilities around the territory and families
can safely bring children in for the sustained treatment needed.

Protesters Reject Taliban’s ‘Islamic Emirates’ Presence
May

The
residents of Darayim district, Badakhshan province, staged widespread protests
against The Taliban on Friday, May 3rd.
Residents
of Badakhshan stated that protests continued following the killing of at least

Taliban
Opponents Lack Strong Leadership And Foreign Support: SIGAR
May
3, 2024
Special
Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, known as SIGAR, has written
in a new report that anti-Taliban groups do not have foreign support and strong
leadership.
However,
SIGAR stated that resistance groups have taken responsibility for 43 attacks
against the Taliban in the past three months.
SIGAR
compared this figure to attacks by anti-Taliban groups in the three months
prior, during which anti-Taliban forces were responsible for 57 attacks.
The
report by the United States Special Inspector General for Afghanistan
Reconstruction states that Afghan people’s fatigue from war and retaliatory
actions by the Taliban are two other major reasons for the lack of escalation
in anti-Taliban attacks.
SIGAR
quoted a United Nations report stating that resistance groups have not posed
any challenge to Taliban control of territories.
It
also quoted the UN report stating that the Afghan Freedom Front continued its
guerrilla attacks in cities and villages. Additionally, it was quoted that the
National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, led by Ahmad Massoud, did not launch
any attacks in Panjshir, its traditional base.
A
resident of Panjshir told SIGAR that due to pressures imposed by the Taliban on
the people of Panjshir, the resistance front is currently not operating in this
province.
Based
on the report by SIGAR, the Taliban has continued attacks and the disappearance
of former Afghan government officials despite claims of amnesty in the past
nine months.
SIGAR
criticized Taliban authorities for not taking sufficient action to prevent
retaliatory killings by their members.

US
provides $17 billion to Afghanistan post-withdrawal: SIGAR
May
3, 2024
The
Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) of the United
States says that following the collapse of the previous government in
Afghanistan, the United States has allocated $17.19 billion to Afghanistan and
refugees.
According
to its latest report, released on Thursday, SIGAR added that this assistance
includes $2.80 billion in humanitarian and development aid and a $3.5 billion
package to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund in Switzerland.
According
to this report, the United States has allocated $5.36 billion for humanitarian
aid, including natural and man-made disasters outside the country, to support
Afghan refugees under the “Allies Reception” program until September 30, 2023.
Additionally,
the US has transferred $3.5 billion, half of Afghanistan’s frozen central bank
reserves in a US bank, to the fund in Switzerland.
According
to SIGAR, the US remains the largest contributor to Afghanistan.
Amid
a dire humanitarian crisis since the US withdrawal and the Taliban assuming
control, this assistance comes as a crucial lifeline for Afghanistan. UN
agencies report that over two-thirds of the population grapples with poverty,
with children and women facing the brunt of the hardships, lacking access to
basic necessities like food and shelter.

Afghanistan's Press Freedom Ranking Drops 26 Places
On
World Press Freedom Day, Afghanistan has fallen from 152nd to 178th in the
press freedom index.
According
to the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) list, Afghanistan has dropped 26 places
due to the deaths and arrests of journalists.
The
Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) also expressed concern over the
restrictions on journalists and their continued detention, warning of adverse
consequences.
The
report from AFJC said: “On the occasion of May 3rd, World Press Freedom Day, we
voice our deep concerns regarding the escalating restrictions on media and the
ongoing widespread arrests of independent journalists in Afghanistan,
cautioning against the adverse effects of this continuing trend.”
"From
May 2023 to the present, journalists and media in the country have faced
significantly more restrictions and problems in terms of enjoying their legal
and fundamental rights than in the period one year prior," said Ahmad
Quraishi, the AFJC executive director.
Reporter
Farahnaz told TOLOnews: "When journalists contact sources, they convey
their statements to us via WhatsApp."
The
UN Women for Afghanistan, as well as Roza Otunbayeva, the Special
Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan, the spokesperson
for the US Embassy in Afghanistan based in Qatar, and Amnesty International
have expressed concern about the restrictions on journalists and media,
emphasizing the neec to support and protect journalists.
The
UN Women for Afghanistan stated: "80% of women journalists in Afghanistan
have had to stop working due to restrictions, harassment and intimidation. On
World Press Freedom Day and every day, we keep supporting media initiatives and
women journalists who strive to advance women’s rights & gender
equality."
Roza
Otunbayeva, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for
Afghanistan, said: "As we mark World Press Freedom day, we pay tribute to
journalists across Afghanistan, who are doing their best to keep the nation
informed, often at great risk. Their work is essential for an informed and
prosperous nation, and for action on education, the environment, health, the
economy, and good governance for all Afghans. They must be celebrated,
supported, and protected."
A
part of Amnesty International's statement reads: "Only when media workers
are able to do their job without fear, the stories of Afghan people can come to
the fore. Their right to freedom of expression must be prioritized and
protected."
Mario
Crifo, the spokesperson for the US Embassy in Afghanistan based in Qatar, said:
“The regulatory environment for media remains ambiguous, and access to
information about government activities has been curtailed. Perhaps most
importantly, and disappointingly, the number of women in the profession and the
representation of women in Afghan media has declined—and so too have the
opportunities for women to attain the education they need to be contributors
and leaders in the media sector.”
However,
the Islamic Emirate, emphasizing cooperation in various sectors with
journalists, demands all media to operate with consideration for national and
Islamic values.
Hamdullah
Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, said: “The
recommendation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to the media is to
continue their publications while considering Islamic and national values as
well as Afghan customs.”
Previously,
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) stated in its annual report that Vietnam,
Russia, and Afghanistan are among the most dangerous countries for journalists.

World
Press Freedom Day Sees Challenges, Opportunities for Afghan Media
Today
(Friday, May 3) corresponds to World Press Freedom Day.
This
day is commemorated globally at a time when the media in Afghanistan has
experienced numerous ups and downs in recent years.
Several
media activists see this day as an opportunity to assess press freedom, to
support the media, and address the challenges faced by journalists.
Shams
Rahman Ahmadzai, a university professor, said: “Journalists should be granted
their rights according to international law and provided with the necessary
facilities, as a journalist is a free and impartial individual.”
Salim
Paigir, a political affairs expert, said: “They should publish the truths of
Afghan society and any events that occur without censorship, which benefits
both the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and the Afghan people.”
On
the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the UN Secretary-General also
mentioned in a video message that this day can be used to remind governments of
their commitments and respect for press freedom.
Antonio
Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, said, “a free choice is not a choice but a
necessity. Our World Freedom Day is very important. And so I call on
governments, the private sector and civil society to join us in reaffirming our
commitment to safeguarding press freedom and the rights of journalists.”
Some
media support organizations, on this occasion, are calling for serious
attention to the press sector in Afghanistan.
Hujatullah
Mujadidi, head of the Afghan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA), said:
“Even if all financial resources and human resources are available, the lack of
access to information, which is related to the government, weakens the media on
one hand and provides a breeding ground for fake news on the other.”
In
1993, following a proposal by UNESCO and the approval of the United Nations
General Assembly, World Press Freedom Day was officially recognized.

Over
1.5M Migrants Returned to Country During Past Year
The
acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, Khalil Rahman Haqqani, said that
in the past year, over 1.5 million Afghan migrants returned to the country.
Speaking
at the inauguration of a hospital, the acting minister of Refugees and
Repatriation added that some countries, including Iran and Pakistan, treat
Afghan migrants poorly and have been urged to stop harassing and mistreating
them.
The
acting minister of Refugees and Repatriation, said: "Right now, more than
600,000 migrants have come only from Pakistan and from Iran, one million
migrants have returned from the beginning of the month of Hamal last year to
the end of Hamal this year (solar calendar)."
According
to the acting minister, many facilities are provided in temporary camps for
migrants, and they are being transfered safely to their provinces.
The
acting minister of Refugees and Repatriation said: "Here, the ambassadors
and chargés d'affaires of the two countries, whom we have repeatedly asked,
have made pledges to us and we have shared this with the representatives who
have come."
Most
of the newly returned migrants asked the caretaker government for permanent
shelter and job opportunities.
"Many
of the returnees do not have land, and land should be distributed to
them," said Noor Khan, an expelled migrant from Pakistan.
"Work
and educational opportunities for returning migrants should be equalized,"
said Jawid, another expelled migrant from Pakistan.
This
hospital in the migrant camp in the city of Gardez, the capital of Paktia
province, is being constructed by UNHCR at a cost of $375,000 US dollars and
will be completed and operational in the next six months.

Bangladesh,
Gambia for speedy resolution of Myanmar case at ICJ
May
4, 2024
Bangladesh
and the Gambia yesterday expressed hope to witness a speedy resolution of the
case filed against Myanmar on the charge of Rohingya genocide with the
International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The
optimism was reflected at a meeting between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasnan
Mahmud and Gambian Justice Minister and Attorney General Dawda A Jallow on the
sideline of the preparatory meeting of the foreign ministers ahead of the 15th
summit of Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Gambia, said a foreign
ministry press release.
During
the meeting, Gambian minister expressed sincere thanks to the Bangladesh
government for providing humanitarian shelter to forcibly displaced Rohingyas.
He
also expressed his gratitude to the Bangladesh government for providing
financial assistance to the Gambia for handling the Rohingya genocide case.
Hasan
discussed Bangladesh government's steps to provide humanitarian shelter to
Rohingyas as well as the future obstacles regarding the crisis.
He
emphasised the repatriation of the Rohingyas, staying in Bangladesh, to their
homeland Myanmar in order to find a sustainable solution to the crisis.
Jallow
described the current scenario of the Rohingya case and expressed his
confidence in proving the allegations of genocide against Myanmar.
However,
he also raised the issue of insufficient funds to run the case with ICJ.
Hasan
assured of providing necessary legal assistance and evidence from Bangladesh side
to Gambia to continue the case.
In
2019, the Gambia filed a case against Myanmar with the ICJ alleging Rohingya
genocide following a consensus of the OIC member states.

Majority
of Germans reject Muslim immigration, express fear of becoming a ‘minority in
Germany’
The
most recent survey shows an absolute majority of 52 percent rather agree with
the statement that “Germany should generally no longer accept refugees from
Islamic countries”. Only 34 percent say “disagree” or “tend to disagree” with
this statement.
There
is even greater agreement with the statement that “in certain areas of my town
or village, I have the feeling that I am no longer in Germany.” According to
the poll, 57 percent agree with the statement, while 36 percent do not share
this feeling.
The
poll further shows that 54 percent of respondents said they were “afraid that
Germans will become a minority in Germany.” On the other hand, 37 percent said
they were not concerned.
A
relative majority supports the theory behind the Great Replacement, which the
domestic intelligence agency the Office for the Protection of the Constitution
(BfV) classifies as a “right-wing extremist” viewpoint. According to the poll,
45 percent of respondents agree with the statement: “I believe that Europeans
are gradually being replaced by immigrants from Africa and the Middle East.” A
smaller number of people, 41 percent, reject this statement.
Racism
against Whites
Two-thirds
of Germans (65 percent) agree with the statement that there is “racism against
Whites” in Germany, while only a small minority of 22 percent think this is not
true.
A
strong majority also believe integration has not worked, with 58 percent saying
“no” to the question of whether “migrants have largely integrated well in
Germany.” Only 29 percent of respondents say migrants have integrated well.
Immigrants
burden the German school system
An
overwhelming majority of Germans agree with the statement that “the current
migration is overburdening the German school system.” The results show that 75
percent, or three-quarters, agree with this statement, while 22 percent say
they do not see a problem.
Remix
News has previously reported on the problems facing the country’s school
system, which is increasingly made up of an immigrant population, and in some
cities, even constitutes the majority of students. Teachers and principals face
assault, classroom overcrowding, language difficulties, and aggressive clashes
between minority groups.
The
survey follows a series of polls that show Germans are rapidly souring on mass
immigration. Currently, the most popular party among German youth is the
anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party while the AfD is now the
second most popular party in the country, even if the party’s overall support
has seen a slight drop of between 3 to 4 points over the last three to four
months.
Just
this week, approximately 1,000 Muslims belonging to a radical pro-Sharia group
marched in Hamburg to call for a caliphate in Germany, sparking national
headlines and a sharp debate about the country’s growing Muslim population.
Last month, it was reported that the share of foreigners committing crimes in
the country had hit a record high of 41 percent.

Record-Breaking
700 Muslims from 25 States Participate in 9th Annual #MuslimHillDay on Capitol
Hill
May
3, 2024
During
the three-day advocacy event, Muslims urged Congress to support the free speech
rights of student protesters, advocated for an immediate and permanent
ceasefire in Gaza, and called for the free flow of humanitarian aid to
Palestinians, including the resumption of U.S. support for UNRWA.
The
U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), the nation’s largest American
Muslim civil society umbrella organization, today announced the successful
completion of the 9th Annual Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. The theme of
this year’s #MuslimHillDay was “Unifying Muslim Voices: Advocating for Justice,
Equality, and Palestinian Rights.”
Some
700 American Muslim delegates from 25 states traveled to Washington, D.C. to
meet with more than 200 congressional offices in the U.S. House and Senate over
three days, from Monday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 1.
SEE
GROUP PHOTO.
Muslim
delegates from across the nation visited the offices of their respective
members of Congress, fostering meaningful dialogues on crucial issues impacting
the Muslim American community. The primary focus of these meetings was to urge
Muslim’s members of Congress to support:
Combating
anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia on college campuses and supporting
student’s free speech rights.
Advocating
for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, and an end to all U.S. weapons
transfers and aid to Israel, to prevent further escalation of violence and
contribute to long-term peace and stability in the region.
Urging
for the immediate release of humanitarian aid and assistance to support the
reconstruction efforts in Gaza, addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the
Palestinian people affected by the conflict, and reinstating funding for the
United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
In
a statement, USCMO Secretary General Oussama Jammal said:
“This
year’s National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill witnessed our community
passionately advocating for our voiceless Palestinian brothers and sisters in
Gaza and the West Bank, demanding an immediate ceasefire and an end to Israel’s
targeted violence that threatens their lives and existence. In solidarity with
tens of thousands of protesting students, including over a thousand facing
arrests, we urged Congress to uphold their fundamental right to free speech.
“Our
#MuslimHillDay exemplifies the united and unwavering dedication of the American
Muslim community in shaping policies rooted in justice, equality, and
inclusion. We take immense pride in surpassing previous records with
unprecedented attendance and congressional engagement.
“USCMO
extends heartfelt gratitude to all participants, community leaders, and
congressional offices whose tireless efforts contributed to this resounding
success. Your dedication and commitment to civic engagement mirror the core
values of democracy and active citizenship.”
In
a statement, Chair of the USCMO National Muslim Advocacy Day Steering Committee
and CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw said:
“As
Congress voted to approve billions in military aid for Israel amidst its
perpetration of genocide, American Muslims participating in the National Muslim
Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill stood as a solemn reminder of the Palestinian
lives diminished, dehumanized, and lost, funded by our taxpayer dollars. We
refuse to be complicit in the U.S. government’s support of such actions. Our
voices, alongside those of student protesters and countless others, echo the
urgent call for justice, accountability, and an end to this cycle of violence.”
In
addition to the series of meetings with members of Congress, USCMO partnered
with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, AJP Action, and Islamic Relief
USA to organize a comprehensive policy and advocacy training session on Monday
morning at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center’s auditorium. This training equipped
participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively engage in
policy discussions and advocate for their community’s interests.
Throughout
the week, Muslim delegates operated out of the Rayburn House Office Building,
ensuring a central location for coordinated efforts in engaging with Congress.
This strategic approach allowed for efficient communication and collaboration
among attendees, enabling them to maximize their impact during the 9th Annual
Muslim Advocacy Day.
Founding
members of USCMO include American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Council on
American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA),
Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), Muslim American Society (MAS), Muslim
Legal Fund of America (MLFA), Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA), The Mosque
Cares (Ministry of Imam W. Deen Mohammed).

US
Muslim group condemns New York universities over arrests of pro-Palestine
students
WASHINGTON
US
Muslim group on Friday condemned administrations of New York universities over
the arrests of pro-Palestine student protestors.
The
New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY)
denounced the University of Buffalo, The New School, New York University and
Stony Brook University administrations for the arrests of students who are
attending pro-Palestine protests at their campuses this week.
The
CAIR-NY said many students, faculty, and community members were taken into
custody, and called on attorneys, Alvin Bragg of Manhattan, Raymond Tirney of
Suffolk County and acting District Attorney Michael Keane of Erie County, to
drop all charges against the arrested students.
“It
is deeply troubling to see this continuing trend of university administrations
resorting to extreme punitive measures against their own students instead of
engaging in dialogue and addressing their concerns,” CAIR-NY Executive Director
Afaf Nasher said in a statement.
“Students
have been peacefully assembling, while universities are inviting violence onto
campus by bringing in law enforcement,” Nasher added.
More
than 2,000 people, including students, have been arrested by US authorities
during the pro-Palestine demonstrations, with protestors demanding universities
divest from Israel and condemning the war on Gaza, where more than 34,000
people have been killed.
Nationwide
demonstrations gained momentum last month after Columbia University asked the
New York Police Department to forcibly evict a group of students who staged an
encampment on a campus lawn. Over 100 people were arrested, but the protesters
quickly adapted and formed another sit-in.
They
were forcibly removed on Tuesday night by police from that site, as well as a
building they occupied.
Students
in other countries including Canada, Australia, France and Egypt have also
organized demonstrations at universities in solidarity with Palestine.

How
Islamic philosophy endured past the golden age to remain relevant today
Saeed
Saeed
May
03, 2024
Islamic
philosophy is often viewed through the lens of its golden age, a heady period
from the 8th to the 11th century full of advancements across the sciences and
education.
It
was spurred by the establishment of the House of Wisdom (Bayt Al Hikma) in
Baghdad under the Abbasid Caliphate. At the time, it was one of the world's
largest public libraries and home to a mammoth collection of rare Arabic
research and manuscripts.
It
was also a period when 10th-century Iraqi philosopher Hassan Ibn Al Haytham
laid the foundations for the scientific study of optics and 8th-century Persian
polymath Muhammad Al Khwarizmi reconfigured the world's understanding of
mathematics by creating the calculating systems of algebra and algorithms.
A
reason why there is little known about that period really goes back to this
idea, which was shaped by western research in the 19th century
Frank
Griffel, scholar
Philosopher
and physician Ibn Sina also published The Canon of Medicine in the 10th
century, which was studied in universities across medieval Europe.
What
happens after that period is not really known or understood, according to a
superlative study by Frank Griffel, a German scholar and professor of Islamic
Studies at Yale University in the US.
Released
in 2021, The Formation of Post-Classical Philosophy in Islam sheds light on the
state of Islamic intellectual discourse during the 12th century, a period
Griffel feels was neglected by previous generations of scholars.
The
English work was awarded the 2024 Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Arab Culture in
Other Languages on Monday as part of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
“A
reason why there is little known about that period really goes back to this
idea, which was shaped by western research in the 19th century, that philosophy
in the Islamic world ended in the 12th century,” Griffel tells The National.
“But now we agree that it is mostly a colonial discourse serving the purpose of
western Europeans more than really describing the situation in the Islamic
world.”
Griffel
argues that Islamic philosophy, instead, has taken a different course in this
“post-classical” phase in its embrace of influences from outside the Muslim
world.
Arabic
translations of works from Greek, Syriac and Persian philosophers flourished
during that period as well as the integration of Greek philosophy, particularly
by Plato and Aristotle, into works by Islamic thinkers. As a result, a new body
of rational philosophical texts were produced by Muslim intellectuals.
These
works used Aristotelian principles of thought and logic in their interrogations
of existential and metaphysical concepts such as the workings of the universe
and nature of the soul.
Griffel’s
books cite seminal philosophical works by Persian polymath Fakhr Al Din Al Razi
and Iraqi physicist Abu Al Barakat Al Baghdadi as examples of that evolution.
Acknowledging
these developments matter, Griffel notes, as it counters false narratives that
Islamic intellectual thought declined at the onset of the 13th century and had
to be replaced by its western counterpart.
The
Formation of Post-Classical Philosophy in Islam lays down the case in
exhaustive study beginning from an exploration of how Khorasan (in modern day
Iran) was the intellectual birthplace of post-Islamic classical philosophy to
highlight some of the key works and figures during the century.
Griffel
notes how Al Razi and Al Baghdadi were at ease writing philosophical and
spiritual texts without any perceived internal crisis of conscience. “And
that's because there was no real concept of secularism in those days. You can
be an Islamic personality who at one point thinks as a theologian and at
another as a philosopher. But really what they were doing was basically the
same thing in that they are providing an explanation in a specific way,” he
says.
“Al
Razi is very interesting in that he is largely known in the Muslim world as a
theologian and his 32-volume commentary on the Quran (Tafsir Al Razi), but what
they really don’t know is that he is an author of a great number of
straightforward philosophical books that are independent of any revelation.
“In
these books he just looks at philosophy in a very Aristotelian way and builds
his argument with a premise, conclusion and ultimately comes out with certain
new teachings.”
Nearly
a decade in the making, Griffel's thesis mostly used source material from the
Suleymaniye Library in Istanbul. “It is the most important library for those in
my field and has tens of thousands of manuscripts,” he says. “Because many of
these rich texts were not edited or printed I would often go there to collect
them or spend time on a computer portal and basically click through them.”
An
Arabic translation of The Formation of Post-Classical Philosophy in Islam will
be released later in the year. Griffel hopes to show certain sections of the
Muslim world how Islamic philosophy remains relevant today.
“I
find that there can be some prejudice existing against non-Muslim authors
writing something sensible about Islamic scholars,” he says.
“But
these books and a prize like the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, for example, shows
these great thinkers are not just important to Islam, but to the history of
philosophy period.”

Biden
admin’s DOE investigating Emory University for alleged anti-Muslim
discrimination
May
3, 2024
The
U.S. Department of Education's (DOE) Office for Civil Rights is investigating
Atlanta's Emory University for alleged anti-Muslim discrimination on campus.
The
investigation comes as college campuses across America are being engulfed by
disruptive, chaotic and often violent anti-Israel protests — leaving many
Jewish students with no choice but to flee campus or fear for their safety.
The
DOE’s investigation comes after the Georgia chapter of the Council on
American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Georgia) and Palestine Legal filed a civil
rights complaint against the school on behalf of Emory Students for Justice in
Palestine.
The
groups claim that Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students have been called
"terrorists," "fake Muslims" and endured severe harassment,
intimidation and discrimination on campus and online. It claims students had
their flyers, noting the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces,
ripped down or thrown in the trash.
"The
last 6 months at Emory University have been difficult for Palestinian, Arab and
Muslim students. We want the Department of Education to do what Emory failed to
— which is [to] investigate our reports of bias properly, listen to our voices,
and hold Emory accountable, so we can safely advocate for Palestinian rights
without fearing for our safety on campus," Emory Students for Justice in
Palestine said in a release from CAIR-Georgia about the complaint. "No
student should ever feel marginalized, intimidated and unsafe like we have been
feeling. We are here to learn, and we should be able to do so in peace without
being threatened, harassed and dox[x]ed simply for being Palestinian, Muslim,
Arab or a supporter of Palestinian rights."
When
reached by Fox News Digital, Emory University said it received the complaint
from the DOE and will respond, but said it is unable to discuss an open
investigation.
Similarly,
the DOE confirmed the investigation, but told Fox News Digital it "does
not comment further on pending investigations."
CAIR-Georgia
— a group whose main chapter top executive said he was "happy" to
witness the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel — praised the DOE’s investigation
into Emory.
"It
is unconscionable that students have been made to suffer an unsafe and
unwelcome learning environment without recourse despite asking the University
for help multiple times," Azka Mahmood, CAIR-Georgia's executive director,
said in a press release. "We hope that this investigation will compel
Emory University administration to address the harassment and systemic
discrimination faced by Palestinian, Muslim, and Arab students."
The
DOE’s investigation into anti-Muslim discrimination comes as students and
outside agitators have staged often-violent anti-Israel encampments at
universities across the U.S.
At
Emory, at least 28 people were arrested during a recent demonstration at the
Emory Quad. The school said its Police Department "issued criminal
trespass warnings to six individuals suspected of committing recent acts of
vandalism on campus" and "confirmed that none of these individuals are
affiliated with Emory."
Video
taken on campus showed police officers armed with Tasers, tear gas and pepper
balls attempting to bring the rowdy anti-Israel agitators under control.
Former
FBI Special Agent and Fox News contributor Nicole Parker said the DOE
investigating alleged anti-Muslim discrimination on Emory’s campus and not
antisemitism is just par-for-the-course with the current federal criminal
justice system under the Biden administration.
"It
seems that when it comes to investigating members of the liberal progressive
movement, the FBI and DOJ almost turn a blind eye," Parker told Fox News
Digital. "But yet they drop the hammer on those on the conservative end of
the spectrum."
Parker
stressed that she cannot speak about the DOE, but said the federal criminal
justice system in general "picks and chooses who they are going to
protect."
"The
FBI claims that the violent and dangerous actions against Jews on college
campuses the past couple of weeks are simply an exercise of First Amendment rights,"
Parker said. "If those activities don’t constitute violation of civil
rights or a hate crime — I’m not sure what a hate crime is."
She
pointed to the FBI’s definition of a hate crime. On its website, the FBI
defines a hate crime as a "criminal offense against a person or property
motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion,
disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity."
When
previously reached by Fox News Digital about the anti-Israel and often blatant
antisemitic demonstrations on college campuses, the FBI released the following
statement:
"The
FBI is in close contact with state and local law enforcement partners and, as
we do in the normal course of business, we will share any information regarding
potential threats. We respect the rights of individuals to peacefully exercise
their First Amendment rights and the FBI investigates individuals who violate
federal law through violence or other criminal activity."
Parker
encouraged any students who feel they have been the victim of a hate crime to
contact the FBI by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip online at
tips.fbi.gov.
"First
amendment free speech is embraced in our blessed nation, but violence,
terroristic threats and destruction are not. In fact, those are serious crimes
and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," she said.
Fox
News Digital reached out to Emory Students for Justice in Palestine, but has
not yet heard back.

Joint
Saudi-US ‘Protection Shield IV’ drill begins
May
03, 2024
DHAHRAN:
In a display of strategic cooperation, the Eastern Region Command in Dhahran
orchestrated the latest iteration of the joint Saudi-US exercise, “Protection
Shield 4.”
Bringing
together branches of the Saudi Armed Forces, the U.S. Central Command
(CENTCOM), and a consortium of civilian and military government
entities—including the Ministry of Defense’s health services, the General
Directorate of Civil Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the Saudi Red
Crescent Authority—the drill aimed to bolster preparedness against potential
threats of mass destruction.
Colonel
Turki bin Salem Al-Sumairi, overseeing the participating mixed battalion,
underscored the drill’s dual purpose: to enhance the operational capabilities
of all involved and to foster seamless collaboration between Saudi and US
forces. Furthermore, the drill sought to heighten awareness of chemical,
biological, radiological, and nuclear risks.
Field
exercises formed the crux of the event, testing the efficacy of national
response plans in confronting scenarios involving weapons of mass destruction.
Additionally, coordination and information exchange mechanisms were scrutinized
to ensure swift and effective joint responses.
Simulated
ammunition was employed during the drills to simulate crisis scenarios arising
from the deployment of weapons of mass destruction. Meanwhile, health services
units from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, the Civil Defense,
and the Saudi Red Crescent engaged in drills aimed at enhancing collaborative
efforts and refining responses to chemical and biological incidents.

How
sustainable tourism can help preserve Saudi Arabia’s iconic desert wildlife
May
03, 2024
ALULA:
Although Saudi Arabia is home to a wealth of ecosystems, from its coastal
mangroves and coral reefs to its high-altitude forests and lush oases, the
Kingdom is perhaps best known for its deserts.
However,
these landscapes, which are fast becoming popular with outdoor adventurers, are
home to a remarkable array of animals, which inhabited the region long before
the arrival of humans.
Despite
the hardiness of these animals, given the harshness of their environment, the
encroachment of humans into these pristine habitats is raising concerns among
conservationists.
“The
rapid growth in tourist flows in recent decades has been accompanied by
diversification, both geographically, and in terms of tourism segments or products,”
Basmah Al-Mayman, Middle East regional director of the UN Tourism (formerly UN
World Tourism Organization), told Arab News.
“Desert
destinations have shared in the benefits of this double-diversification
process, making it an even more pressing priority to define a sustainable
approach to tourism development in desert areas.”
As
a Saudi national herself, Al-Mayman recognizes the value of the Kingdom’s
precious ecosystems as a source of revenue and national pride. However, she
believes the tourism industry, developers, and travelers themselves have a
responsibility to act sustainably.
“In
the desert, more than anywhere, with destinations still relatively untouched by
the adverse effects tourism can bring, sustainability represents a particularly
critical challenge,” she said.
“The
messages conveyed by UN Tourism are not only preventive in character, but also
offer stakeholders at international as well as local levels the advice and
tools they need to combat poverty and desertification while enabling tourism to
properly play its role as a vehicle for development.”

According
to UN Tourism, sustainability principles refer to the environmental, economic,
and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development. A balance must be
established between these dimensions to guarantee its long-term sustainability.
Sustainable
tourism should therefore make optimal use of environmental resources that
constitute a key element in tourism development, while maintaining essential
ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity.

As
the largest country in the Middle East, occupying more than 80 percent of the Arabian
Peninsula, Saudi Arabia is home to five distinct climatic regions.
These
biomes include coastal fog desert, the southwestern savanna foothills, the
southwestern montane woodlands, the Arabian Desert, the Nubo-Sindian tropical
desert, and areas of semi-desert.

Extensive
hunting in the 19th century resulted in the population decline of many of Saudi
Arabia’s indigenous animals, including oryx, leopards, and cheetahs. The
Kingdom has since imposed bans on poaching and launched breeding programs to
help bolster populations.
Other
wildlife found in these habitats included striped hyenas, mongoose, baboons,
sand cats, and hopping desert rodents known as jerboa. Visitors willing to
brave the region’s harsh temperatures may be rewarded with a glimpse of a
Nubian ibex, sand gazelles, or a whole array of reptiles.

Occupying
some 25 percent of Saudi Arabia’s territory, the Rub’ Al-Khali, also known as
the Empty Quarter, is anything but what its name might suggest. The world’s
biggest sand desert is in fact home to a dizzying array of wildlife.
Likewise,
the Kingdom’s scrublands, steppes, mangroves, volcanic fields, palm oases, and
mountain ranges are teeming with creatures — nesting, hunting, feeding, and
burrowing, many of them out of sight, coming out only in the cool hours of
night.
No
desert animal is perhaps better recognized than the camel. It is because of its
iconic status that the UN and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture has designated
2024 as the “Year of the Camel.”
This
year, Saudi Arabia will host several camel-centric events and organize special
spaces to educate the public about these much-loved “ships of the desert.”
Just
this past week, the second ever AlUla Camel Cup was celebrated in the Kingdom’s
ancient northwestern region. The four-day event centered on the animal, which
has become synonymous with the country’s identity.

The
camel has been the Bedouin’s best friend for centuries, as well as a loyal
companion and a lifeline. Even the Prophet Muhammad relied on camels for
transportation and as a source of food and fuel.
Camels
are not the only animals getting their moment in the limelight. Saudi Arabia’s
National Center for Wildlife and the Saudi Green Initiative have been working
hard to ensure none of the Kingdom’s fauna is overlooked.
Assigning
an animal to be championed during a specific year, month, or day has been
instrumental in raising awareness about the wellbeing and conservation of the
region’s distinctive species.
In
2022, the Royal Commission for AlUla launched a campaign for the recognition of
“International Arabian Leopard Day.” In 2023, the UN General Assembly
unanimously designated Feb. 10 as the “International Day of the Arabian
Leopard.”

extinction, the Arabian leopard is one of the wildlife species at the center of
the Kingdom's animal conservation program. (Royal Commission of AlUla photo)
The
Arabian leopard once enjoyed a range stretching across a large swathe of the
Arabian Peninsula, from southern Jordan to Yemen.
But,
after years of human encroachment on its habitat, resulting in the depletion of
its natural prey, the International Union for Conservation of Nature listed the
big cat as a critically endangered species.
Saudi
Arabia has long been at the forefront of animal conservation, with the Imam
Abdulaziz bin Mohammad Royal Reserve Development Authority reintroducing more
than 220 endangered species into the wild in the Kingdom’s royal reserves over
the past five seasons.

than 220 endangered animal species have been reintroduced to the wild in Saudi
royal reserves over the past three years. (SPA)
Much
of this has been done in tandem with sustainable tourism initiatives, designed
to protect the Kingdom’s ecosystems, while providing jobs, services, and prosperity
to local communities.
For
instance, in the ancient deserts of northwest Saudi Arabia, framed by curious
rock formations with their dramatic silhouettes, the lush green oasis of AlUla
has been continuously occupied by humans since before the 12th century.
Throughout
that time, animals have been vital to the area and to the livelihoods of its
human residents.
In
line with Saudi Vision 2030, the Royal Commission for AlUla has launched an
initiative to rehabilitate 65,000 hectares of degraded land, activating the
space and resurrecting the harmony between humans and nature — an organic
partnership that has defined the region for millennia.

the 12th century. (RCU photo)
Besides
AlUla, nearly every other desert space in the Kingdom has introduced curated
tours that mindfully lead humans into the wilderness with the intention of
enjoying, honoring, and respecting the animals that live there.
The
Kingdom has made significant strides in ensuring that its animals continue to
flourish in a rapidly changing world and a nation that aims to become a major
tourism magnet in the years to come.
But
with more people, vehicles, and infrastructure coming to the desert, it is a
collective responsibility to ensure visitors do so without disturbing these
precious ecosystems and their animal inhabitants.

Environment
Week events put Saudi Arabia’s leadership role in the limelight
May
04, 2024
RIYADH:
The region of Middle East and North Africa is known for its hot, dry climate
and scarce water resources. The harsh climatic conditions are a contributing
factor to the region’s perennial scourge of drought, desertification and land
degradation.
These
challenges result in imbalances in different ecosystems, harming especially the
agriculture sector and imposing economic hardship on local populations. The
growing importance of this regional issue has been a motivating factor for
Saudi Arabia to host regular discussions.
This
week, Environment Week, has been an opportunity to take stock of the challenges
ahead and the progress made so far. Events organized during Environment Week
highlighted Saudi Arabia’s leadership role in environmental preservation and
sustainable development.
Environmentalists
were given a forum to exchange on a range of subjects, with the emphasis
naturally on drought, desertification and land degradation. For this occasion,
Arab News interviewed Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the United Nations
Convention to Combat Desertification in Riyadh.
“It
has become extremely difficult for humanity to cope with the frequency of
challenges,” he said. “Saudi Arabia is playing a very important role of course.
It is not a small economy, therefore the demand for support from Saudi Arabia
is also growing.”
Thiaw
spoke of some of the outcomes of land degradation and drought such as the
increase of irregular migration due to land degradation and drought. “You will
likely see more competition of land and water, and therefore, more conflict,”
he said.
Drought,
a major problem in many Middle East countries, has put water resources under
stress in tandem with rising temperatures. Both surface water and groundwater
reserves are failing owing to declining precipitation and rising evaporation
rates.
As
a result, rivers and lakes are drying up and water shortages have become a
serious problem. Moreover, because of multiple environmental reasons, including
drought, the region has been experiencing frequent sandstorms.
“There
are around 50 countries that are sources of dust storms, but there are 150
countries that are affected by this phenomenon. Therefore, it has become a
global issue,” Thiaw said, speaking about the impact of dust storms in one
nation on another.
“You
may use one country to shine a spotlight on dust storms, but these constitute a
global phenomenon that we all need to address. To do that, you need global
treaties like the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which at the moment
has 197 parties. So, it is a universal body and has a summit, a meeting every
two years.
“The
next meeting will be held here in Riyadh in December 2024, where the 197
countries will come together at the level of heads of state, at the level of
ministers and the level of experts, communities and NGOs and civil society
organizations, to discuss just that, namely the consequences of land
degradation and drought on the lives and livelihoods of communities.”
Furthermore,
experts point out that drought and desertification influence each other.
Desertification, the process by which fertile land transforms into arid desert,
is another significant challenge confronting countries of the Middle East and
North Africa. Unsustainable agricultural practices, overgrazing, deforestation
and soil erosion all contribute to the problem.
Consequently,
arable land is lost and food production decreases, exacerbating the problem of
food insecurity. Desertification also leads to the displacement of communities,
according to Thaiaw, as people are forced to migrate in search of more
habitable areas.
Speaking
to Arab News on the occasion of Environment Week in Riyadh, Elizabeth Mrema,
deputy executive director of the United Nations Environment Program, offered
her views on the crisis of desertification.
“As
far as Saudi Arabia is concerned, the country has clearly seen its impact and
treated it as a priority for this year. I am saying ‘this year’ because at the
UN Environmental Assembly at the end of February, Saudi Arabia took the lead on
an initiative to combat degradation. It went through and was adopted, and that
was on a global level,” said Mrema.
“Beyond
that, this country next month, on June 5, will host World Environment Day. This
day is celebrated every year. It is global because it was adopted by the UN
General Assembly. This year, it is being hosted by Saudi Arabia.
“This
year Saudi Arabia will host the UN Conference to Combat Desertification. It
will be hosted here with the theme ‘Our land, our future’ again, Land is the
focus.”
Additionally,
the combination of drought and desertification in one area leads to land
degradation, further compounding the Middle East's environmental crisis. Soil
erosion, salinization, and depletion of soil nutrients are some of the results
of land degradation.
As
agricultural productivity declines worldwide, farmers face key challenges in
securing their livelihoods, in addition to the fact that the environmental
problems heighten ecosystem vulnerability, which also leads to biodiversity
loss and ecosystem imbalance.
“Saudi
Arabia is showing the world that this is a global issue. The initiatives which
have been taken by the government in recent years demonstrate the commitment in
dealing with these issues,” said Mrema.
“I
look at the Saudi Vision 2030, I look at the environmental strategies of 2018,
I look at the Saudi Green Initiative. I look at the Middle East Green
Initiative with a commitment to reach a regional level to plant 50 billion
trees, 10 of which Saudi Arabia has committed to plant in this country. And not
in committed in words, but put an institution to lead the road, to make sure
that this is happening.”
Addressing
the three challenges of drought, desertification and land degradation in the
Middle East requires a multifaceted approach. Thiaw and Mrema were of the view
that governments, international organizations and local communities need to
work together to implement sustainable water management strategies, promote
efficient irrigation technologies and invest in renewable energy sources.
Additionally,
they said, reforestation efforts and the protection of natural habitats can
help reduce desertification and land degradation.
Raising
awareness about the importance of sustainable land use practices and supporting
affected communities is an important step toward long-term solutions for both
the Middle East and North Africa region and the world.
To
sum up, countries of the Middle East and North Africa are suffering from
effects of intensifying drought, desertification and land degradation. Urgent
action is required to reverse this trend and ensure regional environmental
sustainability.
By
adopting sustainable methods, investing in water management, and promoting
conservation actions, communities of the region will be able to reduce the
severity of these challenges and assure themselves of a more resilient future.

Beast
House sets off on a unique music mission in Saudi Arabia
May
03, 2024
RIYADH:
Only a few months after its recent launch, Beast House has become one of the
Saudi music scene’s biggest assets, using MDLBEAST’s comprehensive strategy to
enrich the Saudi music industry with solid infrastructure.
Driven
by a vision to provide fertile ground in which to cultivate the region’s music
culture, Beast House marks MDLBEAST’s debut investment in the music facilities
sector in Saudi Arabia with an innovative tripod model that combines music,
architecture, and technology to achieve its unique mission in the country.
Ramadan
Alharatani, CEO of MDLBEAST, told Arab News exclusively: “We see Beast House
becoming a cornerstone of Riyadh’s music scene, a place where creativity is nurtured
and talents from the local and international scenes can grow. Our vision is to
revolutionize the way music is experienced in the region by fostering
connections in the creative community through the power of music.”
The
multitiered members-only space provides an immersive experience for music
producers, industry experts, creatives, and enthusiasts to connect and learn
through its facilities, which provide live music events, workshops, studio
spaces, and shared dining spaces.
“Beast
House creates a platform for local artists to both showcase and hone their
talents. In this space, members can collaborate with other artists through our
diverse programming designed to elevate the experience of artists. It’s a
welcoming space for anyone still finding their creative path,” Alharatani said.
The
studio has two music production rooms with recording booths, a mix room with a
Solid State Logic Origin mixing console, and a Neve recording room with a
contemporary feel.
Alharatani
said: “Beast House studio caters to artists of all levels, with a blend of
traditional analog and modern digital equipment. We offer hands-on experience
covering the entire production process, from recording to mixing and mastering.
“Our
backline includes Fender guitars, Yamaha drums, and world-class microphones
like Neumann, Royer, and AKG, alongside high-end outboard gear such as Neve,
Bricasti, and UA 1176 compressors. We also provide a comprehensive selection of
synths and drum machines from renowned brands like Roland, Moog, and Sequential,
along with top-tier software and plugins including Pro Tools, Ableton, and
Waves, offering artists endless sonic possibilities.”
The
CEO said that these spaces are crucial for a developing music scene and
nurturing the industry, and that Beast House is all about engaging the senses
in a welcoming environment through its design, curated playlists, refreshments,
and dynamic live shows.
He
said: “By offering insight into songwriting, production, and the music
business, we’re enabling the growth of local talent and opportunities. This
fosters job creation, draws in tourism, and stimulates local businesses, which
are key components in building a robust music infrastructure.”
But
building more venues in the Kingdom is only a part of the MDLBEAST plan.
“Our
strategy is built on three pillars — music and artists, live events, and venues
— and through these three pillars, we can create a vivid music scene and
opportunities for local and global artists to constantly engage with their
audience,” Alharatani said. “All this leads to two main goals: support the
innovative economy and entertainment tourism in the Kingdom, and guarantee the
sustainability of our events.”
Alharatani
believes that because this is the first private members’ club of this nature in
Saudi Arabia, which may be foreign to some in the region, awareness will be key
in getting the public to commit to memberships.
He
said: “We’ve been spreading the word, giving people the lowdown on what
members’ clubs are really all about. We’ve rolled out a few sneak-peek events
to hook them on the experience, and we’re connecting with creative trailblazers
to grow the right community. Here, membership is more than a pass — it’s the
gateway to a hub where creativity grows and thrives.”
By
combining technology, architecture, and music under one roof, Beast House
studio’s specialized professional team hopes to use its technical excellence to
elevate regional music to new levels.
The
recording studio is expecting to become a destination for musicians who want to
create memorable music that transcends boundaries and leaves a lasting impact
on listeners, Alharatani said.

Juniper
tree stands tall as a symbol of Al-Baha’s beauty
May
03, 2024
RIYADH:
For centuries, the juniper tree has proudly stood as a symbol of picturesque
beauty in Al-Baha region, adorning its slopes and mountain peaks with vibrant
green hues.
Nourished
by recent heavy rains in the region, these majestic trees have flourished,
forming expansive forests that eagerly await the arrival of summer, and the
embrace of nature enthusiasts seeking tranquility and solace.
Mohammed
bin Saeed Al-Qudwa, a representative of the National Center for Vegetation
Development and Combating Desertification in the Al-Baha region, told the Saudi
Press Agency that juniper trees make up 30 percent of wild plants in Al-Baha.
The
coniferous trees and shrubs can also been found in forested areas of
Baljurashi, Beni Hassan, and Al-Mandaq governorates.
Al-Qudwa
said that the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating
Desertification, through its forest department in the region, is dedicated to
year-round efforts aimed at preserving forests, with a particular emphasis on
safeguarding the juniper, Al-Atm, and talh populations.
These
endeavors align closely with the strategic objectives outlined in the national
action plan for forests in the Kingdom, a crucial component of Saudi Vision
2030.
Al-Qudwa
said that security and protection patrols stationed at forest sites throughout
the region swiftly intervene to address violations such as unauthorized tree
felling or logging.
Patrols
can impose penalties in accordance with legal provisions and regulations,
ensuring accountability through investigations carried out by inspectors and
observers.
Heavy
rainfall this year has been beneficial for juniper trees, which have responded
with alluring fragrance, interwoven branches, and evergreen foliage.
Junipers
are a central feature of the natural forests in the Al-Baha region. Their
verdant presence not only enhances the allure of the landscape, but also serves
as vital vegetation, safeguarding waterfalls, regulating rainwater runoff, and
protecting against erosion.
The
majestic trees are also a major attraction for tourists.
More
than 30 forests in the Al-Baha region welcomed visitors earlier than usual this
year, coinciding with a surge in weekend visitors from within and outside the Kingdom.
Authorities
in the region are working tirelessly to prepare the forests, which are
complemented by numerous parks, gardens, and traditional villages, for the
large number of visitors.
This
effort aims to uphold the region’s tourist status by also offering a wide range
of activities and services.

Pakistan
One Of 'Most Dangerous' Countries For Journalists: Association of Editors
May
03, 2024
The
Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (Aemend) painted a
stark picture of media freedom in Pakistan, saying that the South Asian country
is one of the "most dangerous" countries for journalists.
The
statement comes as the world commemorates Press Freedom Day to raise awareness
of the importance of journalism and freedom of expression.
Aemend
said that many journalists have been "martyred or disabled in the line of
duty" in Pakistan.
It
said that journalists and media outlets in Pakistan are facing severe
challenges, expressing its determination to continue the constitutional and
legal struggle for freedom of expression in the country, and face unfavorable
circumstances head-on.
"State
and non-state actors are imposing restrictions on television programs, shutting
down broadcasts, pressurising for the termination of journalists, creating
unnecessary pressures and making illegal demands. Such tactics are increasing
by the day," it added.
Aemend
added that character assassination of journalists, especially female
journalists, is part of this campaign. It noted that the purpose of all these
tactics is to suppress journalists and restrict freedom of expression.
The
statement added that the slapping of notices to journalists by Federal
Investigation Agency (FIA) and other institutions, illegal restrictions on
social media, shutting down of mobile phone and internet services on important
occasions, restricting the coverage of targeted political and non-political
activities, and the issuance of illegal notices by Pemra are actions aimed at
depriving the public of their right to information, which is against the spirit
of democratic societies.
"There
is a long list of journalists' kidnappings, forced disappearances, and false
cases, which reflect the challenges faced by media workers in the
country," it added.
Journalism
in Pakistan under threat: IFJ
The
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said that journalism in Pakistan
is "under threat".
On
the day, the IFJ has also launched its 22nd annual South Asia Press Freedom
Report, according to which, journalists have become "punching bags"
in the fight between former prime minister Imran Khan and the establishment.
The
report said that 60 journalists were issued legal notices while dozens were
arrested and remain in custody.
It
said that about eight journalists were charged with sedition, terrorism and
incitement to violence, adding that most of the cases were against journalists
who were supporters of Imran Khan and his party.
As
per the report, access to information and freedom of expression were restricted
while the government failed to create a safety commission to protect
journalists.
"The
economic situation of the media in Pakistan was also bad. People were fired
from the media and their wages were cut," added the IFJ report.
President
seeks safety, security of journalists
President
Asif Ali Zardari, in a statement, emphasised the need to initiate measures for
the safety and security of journalists to enable them to freely report on
important issues, without fear.
“The
Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the freedom of the press, however, it is
also the responsibility of the media to abide by journalistic ethics and report
responsibly and accurately, keeping in view the national interest,” the
president said.
President
Zardari also stressed the need to provide an enabling environment free of
intimidation or harassment to journalists so that they could freely express
their opinions.
The
president said that this year's theme underscored the importance of a free
press in creating awareness and educating the people about climate change and
its impacts on human life and the environment.
Govt
to make all-out efforts to uplift media: PM
Prime
Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured that the incumbent government would make
all-out efforts to uplift the media industry and resolve the issues confronting
it.
The
prime minister, in his message on World Press Freedom Day annually, also
reiterated the resolve for government’s maximum cooperation to protect the
rights of media industry as well as the media workers.
Paying
tribute to the journalists, media workers, writers and cameramen, the premier
said the male and female journalists who sacrificed their lives during coverage
in Gaza were the heroes of humanity.
The
PM also urged the collective role of media and other stakeholders to create a
conducive atmosphere to ensure smooth media functioning. He said the government
firmly believed that freedom of media and expression provided guarantee for
democratic durability.

Pakistan
Sends Back Norwegian Islamist Wanted Over Deadly Shooting At LGBTQ+ Festival
3
May 2024
A
radical Norwegian Islamist who is suspected of complicity in the deadly
shooting at an LGBTQ+ festival in Oslo two years ago has been expelled from
Pakistan and is on his way to Norway, the Scandinavian country's government
said Friday.
Two
people were killed and nine seriously wounded in the shooting at three
locations, chiefly outside the London Pub, a popular gay bar in Oslo's
nightlife district, on June 25, 2022.
Arfan
Bhatti, who is to land in Oslo later Friday, allegedly posted statements online
about killing gay people, Norwgian media have said.
Bhatti
knew Zaniar Matapour, the main suspect in the attack that the Norwegian Police
Security Service has called an “Islamist terror act.”
Matapour
has since March been on trial in Oslo for the shooting, accused of terrorism.
A
Norwegian citizen born in Oslo to Pakistan immigrants, Bhatti who has a past in
criminal gangs, was a leading figure in radical Islamic circles in Norway for
years, chiefly known as the leading figure in an Islamic State-affiliated group
in the country.
The
46-year-old was not in Norway in 2022 but likely in Pakistan, Justice Minister
Emilie Enger Mehl said. His role in the 2022 shooting was unclear and Norwegian
police have said that with Bhatti's return to Norway, they “want to continue
with the extensive investigations to shed light on what involvement Bhatti may
have had in the attack.
“No
matter where in the world someone is, they should know that the Norwegian
authorities are doing everything we can to bring them to Norway," Enger
Mehl told a press conference.
Norwegian
police said that although there is no extradition agreement with Pakistan,
Pakistani authorities have made it possible "to complete the investigation
into the terrorist case.”
Upon
arrival in Norway, Bhatti will be detained and face a custody hearing during
the weekend, police said.
Bhatti
could be called upon testifying in the trial at the Oslo District Court against
Matapour. Bhatti's lawyer John Christian Elden said his client has nothing to
do with the 2022 shooting.
Matapour,
a Norwegian citizen originally from Iran, allegedly fired 10 rounds with a
machine gun and eight shots with a handgun into a crowd before being detained
by bystanders. Following the attack, a Pride parade was canceled, with police
saying they couldn't guarantee security.
Matapour
who had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State group, has refused to speak to
investigators. If found guilty, he faces 30 years in prison.

JUI-F
fighting for rights, not power, says Fazl at Karachi power show
May
03, 2024
Reiterating
allegations of election results' manipulation, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl
(JUI-F) supremo Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that his party is fighting for
people's rights and the country’s sovereignty, and not for power.
“We
are loyal to Pakistan, but there is no value of national loyalty here,” Maulana
Fazl said while addressing a power show in Karachi on Thursday. “Issue is not
limited to elections, you [institutions] will have to change themselves in
entirety.”
He
alleged that “manipulation of votes” and “sell” of all legislature “from Sindh
Assembly to the President’s House” took place in the 2024 nationwide polls.
Pointing
towards alleged manipulation of poll results, he criticised: “Democracy has
been eliminated from the country.”
“Those
people sitting at the helm have made Pakistan a slave of America,” he said,
adding, "Pakistan is self-sufficient of competent people and natural
resources."
The
senior politician, who headed a multi-party alliance — Pakistan Democratic
Movement (PDM) — which successfully ousted the former prime minister Imran
Khan’s government in 2022, said that they were fighting for sovereignty of the
country.
He
said a “drama” was staged in the name of general elections in the 2024.
Fazl
said his political rivals thought that the JUI-F would not be able to protest
against election rigging “but our movement is not only for one day or one
month”.
He
also expressed concerns over the increase in terror incidents, saying that
Pakistan can only prosper when rulers come to power through “people’s
struggle”.
He
added that his party’s struggle was not aimed at getting positions in the
assemblies or ministries but “we are ready to fight for your rights as a
soldier”.
The
politico expressed hopes that Pakistan will become a prosperous and developed
country when the JUI-F came into power via a public struggle.
Earlier
this week, Fazl delivered an explosive speech on the National Assembly's floor,
blasting the government, outcomes of the 2024 nationwide elections,
parliamentarians, bureaucracy, and the establishment on Monday.
He
had asked top leaders of the ruling parties — Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's
(PML-N) Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari — to leave the government and go to the masses.
He
added if the people had voted for the Imran Khan-led PTI then it should be
allowed to rule.

Dialogue
only when ‘stolen mandate’ returned: Imran
May
4, 2024
ISLAMABAD:
PTI’s founding chairman Imran Khan has linked any potential dialogue with the
return of his party’s “stolen mandate” and the release of “innocent imprisoned
workers”.
In
his message from Adiala Jail, Mr Khan also urged the judges hearing his and his
wife’s cases to expedite their rulings instead of delaying them unnecessarily.
Mr
Khan reiterated that he was “always ready for talks, but it could only take
place when their stolen mandate was returned and innocent imprisoned workers
were released”, the PTI’s media department said on Friday.
It
said Mr Khan asserted that negotiations were held only with adversaries and
therefore the talks should be held with those who were the biggest opponents of
PTI at present, apparently a reference to the military establishment.
He
said everyone knew that all these cases against him — whether the Al-Qadir
Trust, Iddat or cipher case — were “fabricated, false and baseless”.
Responding
to recent remarks of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa that there was no pressure on
him, Mr Khan said, “Pressure faces only those who refuse to do wrong, while you
have become a B-team against the PTI.”
Mr
Khan reminded Justice Isa that “you snatched the PTI’s electoral symbol of bat
and did not provide level playing field to PTI, besides violating our basic
human rights under the guise of May 9 incidents.”
He
noted that PTI’s petition regarding the May 9 riots had been pending since May
25, 2023, and had yet to be fixed for hearing.
Mr
Khan said that PTI’s petitions filed against the alleged vote rigging in the
Feb 8 general elections were also not fixed for hearing and the issue of PTI
women’s reserved seats also faced delays.
He
said the Supreme Court’s decisions revived the doctrine of necessity once
again, adding that decisions were being taken under duress and intimidation,
which was destroying the country’s judicial system.
He
recalled that the letter of the six judges of Islamabad High Court “proved that
the law of the jungle prevailed in the country.”
He
added, “It is high time that the judges of the top court should stand firmly
with judges of the high courts and refuse to give wrong decisions under
pressure and coercions.”
The
PTI founder urged the nation that this was a historical opportunity to stand
up, as great nations took advantage of such opportunities. He warned that the
nations that did not stand up against oppression would remain slaves forever.
He
said there was no example anywhere in the history of the world to frame three
cases over one crime, adding that the cases had already been made against him
and his wife in the Toshakhana case.
He
pointed out that when nothing was found in the case, preparations were now
being made to make a fourth case “in sheer violation of the Constitution and
law”.
Mr
Khan said that he wrote a letter to the Telegraph in which he stated that not
only his but also his wife’s life was in danger, as she had been denied medical
treatment for the last three months.

Pakistan
slams India’s cross-border assassination campaign
May
4, 2024
UNITED
NATIONS: Pakistan has urged the UN General Assembly and the Security Council to
address India’s new strategy of conducting cross-border assassinations.
During
a General Assembly debate on the “Culture of Peace” on Thursday evening,
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram highlighted that India was also targeting
Muslims, Christians, and other minorities within its borders.
He
stressed that India’s extraterritorial state terrorism was not confined to
Pakistan and it was extending to targeting of political opponents in Canada and
the United States and potentially other nations as well.
Ambassador
Akram also referenced a recent Washington Post report, which quoted Prime
Minister Narendra Modi telling his supporters: “Today, even India’s enemies
know: This is Modi, this is the new India. This New India comes into your home
and kills you.” The Pakistani envoy informed the world body that since the BJP-RSS
government assumed office in 2014, “hate, oppression, and violence” against
India’s Muslims, Christians, Dalits and others had become rampant and
systematic, fueled by the ideology of Hindutva.
“Unless
Hindutva fascism is opposed, unless the sense of impunity of the BJP-RSS is
ended, unless the Indian Muslims are protected against genocide, and unless the
Kashmir dispute is peacefully resolved, wider violence and conflict in South
Asia is a real and present danger,” he warned.
Ambassador
Akram pointed out that despite efforts to promote a culture of peace, the world
was witnessing the rise of hate, violence, and war, with over 300 conflicts
raging across the globe.
“The
right of peoples to self-determination is being brutally suppressed, especially
in Palestine and in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, adding, “We see the spread of
discrimination, bigotry, xenophobia and Islamophobia even in mature
democracies.”
Highlighting
Pakistan’s efforts to combat Islamophobia, he said, “The world cannot but be
deeply concerned at the officially sanctioned manifestations of Islamophobia in
India”.
He
urged the UN Secretary-General to implement the Plan of Action for the
protection of religious sites. Pakistan, he said, had circulated to the United
Nations a detailed dossier, with concrete evidence, of over 2400 crimes
committed by named Indian officials in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
“The
Jammu and Kashmir dispute is an open wound which can once again trigger a
disastrous conflict between Pakistan and India. It needs to be resolved
urgently in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council and the
wishes of the Kashmiri people,” he said. Ambassador Akram told the Assembly
about the BJP-RSS government’s belligerence and aggression against Pakistan,
pointing out that the Indian Defence Minister had threatened to “take over”
Azad Kashmir. The Indian Army Chief has also threatened to cross the Line of
Control, he added. “India’s armed forces have adopted dangerous doctrines:
‘Cold Start’, to launch a surprise attack against Pakistan, another
contemplating, and I quote ‘a limited war under the nuclear overhang’.
India,
he said, was financing and sponsoring terrorist groups, especially the TTP and
the BLA, to conduct attacks in Pakistan across the country’s Western borders in
an attempt to disrupt the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Media
bodies decry restrictions on press in Pakistan
May
4, 2024
ISLAMABAD:
Media bodies while observing World Press Freedom Day expressed concerns over
the state of free media in Pakistan, with a key focus on mainstream media and
social media restrictions during election days.
The
Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) has
expressed its determination to continue the constitutional and legal struggle
for freedom of expression in the country and face unfavourable circumstances
head-on.
In
a statement, AEMEND said that journalists and media outlets in Pakistan are
facing severe challenges, as state and non-state actors are imposing
restrictions on television programmes, shutting down broadcasts, pressurising
for the termination of journalists, creating unnecessary pressures, and making
illegal demands.
Character
assassination
“Such
tactics are increasing by the day,” the statement said, adding, “Character
assassination of journalists, especially women journalists, is part of this
campaign, and political party workers are also part of such malicious
campaigns.” The purpose of all these tactics is to suppress journalists and
restrict freedom of expression, AEMEND said.
Harassment
of journalists, social media shutdowns among challenges depriving the public of
their right to information
It
added that slapping notices on journalists by FIA and other institutions,
illegal restrictions on social media, shutting down mobile phone and internet
services on important occasions, restricting the coverage of targeted political
and non-political activities, and the issuance of illegal notices by Pemra are
actions aimed at depriving the public of their right to information, which is
against the spirit of democratic societies.
In
its South Asia Press Freedom Report, the International Federation of
Journalists (IFJ) highlighted that the region and the world witnessed democracy
in action in 2023-24, with the ballot of more than two billion people in about
50 countries making momentous choices. While the world’s most populous region —
South Asia — saw citizens in Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Pakistan, India,
and Sri Lanka either vote or gear up to elect governments, the IFJ said.
Four
journalists killed
Regarding
Pakistan, the IFJ highlighted that four journalists were murdered. “Pakistan’s
women journalists faced similar harassment both online and offline; they are in
a minority, and their voices are unheard,” the IFJ added.
Erosion
of free speech
Meanwhile,
the Freedom Network has released its annual ‘Pakistan Freedom of Expression and
Media Report 2024’ titled “Erosion of free speech: The silencing of citizens,
political parties, and media,” highlighting Pakistan’s socio-political-legal
and media industry-related factors and developments impacting the exercise of
Article 19 (freedom of expression) by the public and media.

Press Club president among 3 dead, at least 5 injured in car bomb attack:
officials
May
3, 2024
Khuzdar
Press Club (KPC) President Maulana Muhammad Siddique Mengal was among three
dead and at least five others injured due to a car bomb attack in the district
of Balochistan on Friday, police and medical officials said.
The
incident coincided with World Press Freedom Day and the release of the 2024
World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders which saw
Pakistan dropping two places to 152. The index said Pakistan was “one of the
most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, with three to four
murders each year”.
City
Police Station House Officer (SHO) Ghulam Mustafa told Dawn.com the blast
occurred near the Chamrok area at Sultan Ibrahim Khan Road around Friday
prayers. He said Mengal, a provincial senior leader of the Jamiat
Ulema-i-Pakistan-Fazl (JUI-F), was killed on the spot while nine others were
injured who were taken to Civil Hospital Khuzdar.
He
added that the situation of two injured brothers was critical and they died in
the hospital.
Meanwhile,
the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr Ali Ahmed Bangalzai told Dawn.com
that Mengal’s body and seven injured were brought to the hospital which
dwindled to five after two more deaths.
The
SHO said camera footage of the incident was obtained which showed that a man
riding a motorcycle comes near Mengal’s moving vehicle and attaches a “magnetic
bomb” which exploded a few seconds later.
Mustafa
said evidence was collected from the scene, saying that Mengal was attacked
while going somewhere to lead prayers.
The
SHO said a case was registered by the Counter-Terrorism Department under
terrorism charges upon his complaint.
Prime
Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the incident and loss of life.
Balochistan
Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti strongly condemned the blast and
expressed regret over the lives lost .
The
chief minister also directed the inspector general of police to submit a report
after upon the completion of the investigation and to take measures to arrest
those involved in the attack.
“The
elements involved in the incident cannot escape from the grip of the law, “he
said and added that restoring peace and security and protecting people’s lives
and property were the government’s responsibility.
“All
nefarious designs of anti-peace elements will be foiled through contributions
of security forces and the public in order to maintain durable peace for the
interest of the province’s progress,” he said.
Information
Minister Attaullah Tarar lauded the services rendered by Mengal in the field of
journalism and said his death was a “big blow” to the profession and field.
Reiterating
the governments commitment to root out terrorism from the country, he vowed to
bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to the justice. He assured that a
thorough probe would be conducted in this regard.
JUI-F
chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman strongly condemned the incident and called for the
culprits to be punished.
“Institutions
that establish peace and order are engaged in political interference and the
lives and property of the people are not in a happy state,” he bit out in a
post on X.
Meanwhile,
the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) called on the provincial government
to arrest those responsible for the incident.
The
BUJ announced a three-day mourning period to protest against Mengal’s death in
a demonstration held outside the Quetta Press Club on World Press Freedom Day.
Representatives
from various segments of the society, including lawyers, the Human Rights
Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), the Peoples Students Forum, civil society and
journalists in a large number participated in the protest.
BUJ
President Khalil Ahmed strongly condemned the brutal murder of the KPC
president, emphasising that such acts undermined press freedom and democracy.
He
urged prompt and thorough investigations into the murder to bring the
perpetrators to justice. He also stressed the need for enhanced safety measures
for journalists in the region and beyond.
Pakistan
Federal Union of Journalists Vice President Saleem Shahid highlighted the
pivotal role journalists played in upholding democracy and freedom of
expression.
He
stressed the imperative of ensuring journalists’ safety and their right to
report freely without fear of reprisal or censorship.
HRCP’s
Advocate Jalila Haider and civil society activist Fareed Shahwani echoed the
call for solidarity and support for journalists globally, emphasising the
importance of truth and transparency in media reporting.

US
supports Pakistan’s efforts for its economy including IMF deal: State Dept
May
03, 2024
The
United States State Department said on Thursday that Washington's support, for
Pakistan’s efforts to stabilise its economy including reaching a deal with the
International Monetary Fund (IMF), was "unwavering".
"We
support the progress that Pakistan has made to stabilise its economy and manage
its daunting debt burden," said US State Department’s spokesperson Matthew
Miller while replying to a query at his press briefing. He said Washington
supported Pakistan’s efforts in this regard including reaching an agreement
with the IMF.
The
Washington-based lender, on April 30, released the last tranche of $1.1 billion
for Pakistan under the $3 billion Stand-By Arrangement (SBA).
"The
Executive Board of the IMF completed the second and final review of Pakistan’s
economic reform programme supported by the IMF’s Stand-By Arrangement
(SBA)," the Fund had said in an official statement issued on its website.
"The
Board’s decision allows for an immediate disbursement of SDR 828 million
(around $1.1 billion), bringing total disbursements under the arrangement to
SDR 2.250 billion (about $3 billion)."
On
economic reforms in Pakistan, the State Department spokesperson said the US
encouraged the Pakistani government to prioritise and expand economic reforms
to address its economic challenges.
"Our
support for Pakistan’s economic success is unwavering and we will continue to
engage with them through technical engagements as well as through our trade and
investment ties, all of which are priorities of our bilateral
relationship," he stated.
It
is important to note that Pakistan has formally requested for an extended and
larger debt to stabilise the economy. An IMF delegation is expected to visit
the country this month to discuss the matter in detail with the Pakistani
authorities.

Perak
Mufti advised not to boycott KK Mart, says it is against Islamic principles
04-05-
2024
PETALING
JAYA: Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Zahidi Wan Teh has advised against the boycott
of convenience store chain KK Mart, stating that the boycott goes against the
Islamic principles of justice.
Astro
Awani reported that the Perak Mufti believes that his statement was his
responsibility to convey as commanded in verse 58 of Surah An-Nisaa, in the
al-Quran.
He
added that he could only speak up on the issue now as he had to do research on
the matter and factor in current developments.
Wan
Zahidi said the element of purposefully insulting Islam could not be proven
through ‘syahadah’ or direct evidence.
“It
can only be proven with a confession or through ‘qaraiunul ahwal’ -
circumstantial evidence.
“From
the explanation given by the KK Mart management and their public apology
regarding the incident, together with an explanation from JAKIM, it is apparent
that the existence of ‘alqasdul jinaein’ (criminal intent) cannot be proven.
“Therefore
under the Islamic judicial method, the accusation against the KK Mart
management insulting Islam is not proven,” he said.
Wan
Zahidi added that as the topic of boycotting the convenience store chain and
handling it had strayed from the principles of Islamic justice after many
“sensationalised” it by spreading anger and hate.
“Verse
8 of Surah Al-Ma’idah emphasizes upholding justice for all races, whether we
like it or not.
“While
in Surah An-Nisa verse 58, the command to uphold justice is preceded by the
command to entrust to those who deserve it. This implies that justice is a
trust that must be delivered to anyone deserving, regardless of race,“ he
added.
Wan
Zahidi said that he was ready to face any criticisms if his statement has
stirred up any dissatisfaction among other Muslims.
Umno
Youth chief Muhammad Akmal Saleh called for Muslims in the country to boycott
KK Mart earlier in March following the sale of the socks with Allah inscribed
on them found in the convenience store chain’s Bandar Sunway outlet.
Not
only that, the convenience store chain was also a targeted where molotov
cocktails were flung into two outlets located in Pahang, Perak and Sarawak.
Since
then, KK Mart founder Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan has apologised to the Agong
Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar regarding the Allah socks issue.
Akmal
Saleh was also called to speak with the Agong on his boycott campaign against
KK Mart on April 9 and pledged to heed to the Agong’s decree to “embrace peace,
harmony as well as preserve the sanctity of Islam.”

Local
Muslims want Government to cut all ties with Israel
2024-05-04
Otto
Carrington
Senior
Reporter
otto.carrington@cnc3.co.tt
Local
Muslims are urging the Government to sever all economic and diplomatic ties
with Israel to coincide with Trinidad and Tobago’s recent official recognition
of Palestine as a state, a decision which was made in conjunction with other
Caricom nations.
The
Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs confirmed that the decision to
recognise Palestine as a state was made just this week.
Speaking
at a media conference at the Islamic Missionaries Guild Islamic Centre, Kelly
Village, yesterday, Concerned Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago public relations
officer, Imtiaz Mohammed, welcomed the Government’s position on Palestine.
The
group noted that in November last year, they suggested in a letter that T&T
recognise Palestine and sever all ties with Israel.
The
conflict between Israel and Palestine started last October and since then,
calls for a ceasefire have been echoed throughout the global community.
“We
had written a letter to our Government, and I had sent that letter to the media
since November, when we sent it to the Prime Minister, and we asked for five
things. One is that we cut our diplomatic ties with Israel. Two, reverse the
decision, reverse the credentials of the Israeli ambassador to Trinidad and
Tobago. Three, that Palestine be recognised as a state, which they have now
done. Four is that all trade between Trinidad and Israel must stop, especially
where our Government, in recent years, have been purchasing and utilising
personnel in terms of security equipment and so on and five, boycott,
disinvest, and sanctions,” Mohammed said.
He
added, “So while the Government recognised Palestine, we want them to do more,
the same way how South Africa decided to cut ties with Israel, they made
certain moves in order to take action, which would be of some kind of substance
to the decision that they make, not just saying that we will cut ties or expel
the diplomat, and then you keep trading with them. No, all of that must
happen.”
Joining
in solidarity with the group was Movement for Social Justice leader David
Abdulah, who said, “The Government has really been very weak on this question.
They’ve said that at Caricom, statements have been made, at the United Nations,
Trinidad and Tobago voted in support of resolutions and so on, all that is
true, but how much more can be done as an individual nation-state?
He
said they had also called for a sporting and cultural boycott of Israel,
adding, “The Paris Olympics is coming up and it will be a travesty to see
Israeli athletes participate in Paris in the Olympics of 2024.”
“Israel
must be isolated. They must become a pariah in the international community.
They must be scorned by the entire international community and that is what we
are calling for today.”
Responding
to the concerns of the local Muslim organisation, Foreign and Caricom Affairs
Minister Dr Amery Browne yesterday said, “We are in the business of making the
best possible decisions for Trinidad and Tobago, and acknowledge that some
stakeholders would hold different views and perspectives.
“We
welcome the diversity of thought and analysis on this issue. At the same time,
we are clear on our principled decision to recognise the state of Palestine,
and there is no decision to terminate diplomatic relations with Israel and our
nation will continue to vote at the UN General Assembly in a manner that is
principled and fully reflective of our foreign policy and values.”
Browne
said Government will remain steadfast in its contributions to diplomatic
efforts aimed at fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian
people, achieving a meaningful two-state solution and bringing the cycle of
violence to an end.
T&T
has consistently called for a two-state solution as a way out of the conflict.
In
October 2023, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said T&T recognises Israel’s
right to exist and also the right of the Palestinians to a state of their own.
The
Concerned Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago said it now wants all regional
governments to come together and call for a ceasefire in Palestine.

Islamist
Candidate, Tewassoul, Joins Mauritanian Presidential Race
03
MAY 2024
APA-Nouakchott
– (Mauritania) Several other candidates, including activist Biram Ould Dah Ould
Abeid, who came second in 2019, have also announced their candidacy.
Mauritania’s
Islamist opposition party Tewassoul said on Thursday that its leader was
standing as a candidate in the 29 June presidential election, marking the
party’s first participation since 2009.
Hamadi
Ould Sid’ El Moctar, head of the National Rally for Reform and Development,
known as Tewassoul, will represent the party, which has become the main
opposition party in the Mauritanian parliament since its legalisation in 2007,
with 11 MPs out of 176.
Tewassoul
had previously boycotted the 2014 presidential election and supported a
candidate from outside its ranks in 2019.
The
current president, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, elected in 2019, is the
favourite for the June poll, having announced his candidacy for a second term
on 24 April.
Tewassoul
justifies its decision to present a candidate by the need to change the current
situation, which it describes as deplorable.
Several
other candidates, including the activist Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, who came
second in 2019, have also announced their candidacy.
The
electoral campaign will officially begin on Friday 14 June at midnight and will
end on Thursday 27 June at midnight.

Jakim
launches 24-hour hotline to report insults against Islam
May
3, 2024
The
Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has launched a 24-hour hotline
for the public to report any incidents of “insults to Islam”, including on
social media.
Jakim
said complaints can be made to 017-323 4533 via WhatsApp or through email at
aduan@islam.gov.my.
The
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic affairs, Mohd
Na’im Mokhtar, said the initiative is a collaboration between Jakim, state religious
departments, police, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission.
He
said this is important to ensure action can be taken on the complaints made to
the hotline.
“So
it has to be collaborative. This means complaints can be made immediately and
Jakim with the relevant agencies can take urgent action,” he was reported as
saying by RTM.
This
comes following several high-profile cases where prominent brands and
individuals were accused of insulting Islam through the products that they carried
or via social media commentary.
It
includes convenience store chain KK Mart which is now facing legal proceedings
after several pairs of socks with the word Allah printed on them were found in
an outlet in Selangor.
Two
social media users were also sentenced to jail for postings regarding the issue
after pleading guilty.
One
of them, Chiok Wai Leong, had his conviction dropped after the court found the
guilty plea was not properly recorded.
He
was charged again and this time, pleaded not guilty.

Perak
Mufti says KK Mart’s offence against Islam unproven, urges Muslims to stop
boycott
03
May 2024
IPOH,
May 3 — Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Zahidi Wan Teh today said that Muslims in
the country should refrain from boycotting establishments such as KK Super Mart
because the act departs from the concept of Islamic jurisprudence.
According
to the Islamic judicial methods, Wan Zahidi pointed out that one of the
important pillars in criminal behaviour is the intention and desire to do it,
or “alqasdul jinaei” (criminal intent).
He
said that this element cannot be proven through “shahadah” (direct evidence),
but only by confession or via the “qarainul ahwal” method of proof
(circumstantial evidence).
“From
the explanation by KK Super Mart and also their open apology plus their
explanation to the Malaysia Islamic Development Department, it is clear that
motive and intention in this case is unproven.
“Hence,
based on Islamic jurisprudence, accusations of insulting Islam against KK Super
Mart are unproven,” he said in a statement.
Wan
Zahidi also stressed that the principle of universal justice has a sacred
position in Islam and it emphasises that justice is upheld and delivered to
anyone who is entitled regardless of race.
“When
the issue was sensationalised and fomented sentiments of anger and hatred, the
way it was handled had strayed far from the principles of Islamic justice for
all,” he said.
The
controversy involving the KK Super Mart started on March 13 when images of
socks sold at one of the convenience store chain’s outlets with the word
“Allah” were circulated on social media.
Despite
the company’s management apologising, the situation became a heated issue with
a nationwide boycott called by Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.
Previously
on March 27, Sultan Ibrahim had expressed his displeasure at the controversy
and called for stern action to be taken against those responsible.
Since
the incidents, three of the store’s branches namely the outlet on Jalan Satok
in Kuching, outlet in Bidor, Tapah and the outlet in Sungai Isap, Kuantan came
under fire-bombed attacks.
All
three incidents were believed to have been linked to the earlier “Allah”
printed socks controversy.
In
March, Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan, the founder and executive chairman of the KK
Super Mart was charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code for deliberate
intent to wound the religious feelings of others, alongside his wife. Both
claimed trial.

Muslim
Engineers Task Members On Professionalism
By
Shakirah Adunola

May 2024
A
group, The Muslim Engineers (TME), has enjoined the members to embrace Islamic
business ethics, while discharging their duties as that is the key to attain
paradise.
The
call was made during the group’s yearly lecture in Lagos. The Guest Speaker
Fadilat, Sheikh Al-Imam Abdulwaheed Jumah, while speaking on ‘Engineering: One
of the keys to attain Paradise’, said to be a Muslim meant “total and
unconditional submission to the will of the Almighty Allah. Without belief in
Allah, Paradise is not possible,” he said.
He
said consciousness and fear of Allah is the foundation to attain paradise and a
Muslim must not partake in the construction of places that encourage decadence
in the community.
“An
engineer who wants to attain paradise should consider righteousness in line
with the Quran and the Sunnah.
“
Building places of worship or clubhouses where people go and commit
disobedience against the laws of Allah is not for a Muslim engineer.”
He
noted that telling the truth always “is key in business and a Muslim engineer
must not use sub-standard materials. “If we want change, let us be the change
and
command others to do good and forbid what is bad.
Chairman,
Planning Committee, Ibrahim Tajudeen Kolade, appreciated the contributions of
members, saying:” “I appreciate the contributions of members both in cash, kind
and in spirit towards the lecture. I say, Jazakumu Llahukhayran. I also thank
my committee members for their doggedness in achieving a great outing. In spite
of the economic challenges of the country, we are still able to give out to the
general public food stuff items for their Iftar. I equally and mostly
appreciate all those who despite their busy schedules still find time and to
physically attend the programme,” he said

Why
We Are Unable To Stop Banditry, Kidnapping In Nigeria – Gov Radda Reveals
4
May 2024
The
Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, has revealed why banditry activities
and kidnapping still persist in his state and Nigeria at large.
Radda,
who was a guest on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today,
alleged that some security personnel and government officials are contributing
to the growing insecurity in the northern region, adding that most of them have
now turned banditry into a “business venture”.
“Now
it has turned out to be a business venture—a business venture for the
criminals, some government officials, some security outfits, and some people
who are responsible for their people’s day-to-day activities.
“These
are so many reasons why we are unable to bring banditry to an end,” the
governor said.
Naija
News reports that over the past few years, criminal groups referred to as
bandits have carried out multiple attacks on various locations, particularly in
rural areas in the northern part of the country, kidnapping numerous
individuals and causing fatalities.
President
Bola Tinubu has placed a strong emphasis on addressing the issue of insecurity.
While
some believe that politics plays a role in the insecurity, Governor Radda
argues that poverty and injustice are significant contributing factors.
”The
issue of the hypothesis behind political motive as responsible for banditry is
not true,” the Katsina State governor said.
According
to him, many youths in the north are recruited into banditry with a mere N500.
Speaking
further on the moves by the governors of the northern region to tackle the
region’s insecurity, Governor Radda said the governors were recently on a trip
to the US.
Despite
heavy criticism for the meeting, with many wondering why it was not held in
Nigeria, Radda has said they were only invited to the parley.
He
said: “The meeting was not at the instance of the selected governors of
northern states but it was at the instance of the United States Institute of
Peace. They were the people who invited us; they hosted us for the meeting. We were
invited to sit with them so that we could bring about lasting solutions to the
problems that are affecting our people.”
According
to him, the trip provided them with fresh insights into insecurity in the
region.
“Ten
governors were in Washington, D.C., and we had a symposium with the United
States Institute of Peace so that we could bring about ideas that will end the
insecurity that is worrying our people and is a major problem to the
subnationals. They carefully chose the governors of the places affected by
banditry and kidnapping.
“All
of us sat for three days and we were able to cross-fertilise ideas and interact
with all stakeholders that are involved in bringing about lasting peace and
security globally,” the Katsina governor said.

‘We
Now Have Better Understanding Of Insecurity In Our States After US Trip’ –
Northern Govs
3
May 2024
The
Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, has said that he and his counterparts
from nine northern states now have a better perception of the security
challenges in the region following their recent trip to the United States.
Naija
News reported two weeks ago that Mallam Umar Namadi, the governor of Jigawa
State, and nine other governors from northern Nigeria departed for the United
States to participate in a peace summit organized by the United States Institute
of Peace (USIP).
The
summit commenced on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, and offered a platform for
governors from Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano,
and Plateau to share their perspectives on the most critical issues affecting
their states and the wider region.
The
US trip, however, has been criticized by some citizens.
Defending
himself and his colleagues, Governor Radda of Katsina State said the trip has
helped them to find lasting solutions to the insecurity ravaging the region.
“Ten
governors were in the United States, Washington D.C and we had a symposium with
the United States Institute of Peace so that we can bring about ideas that will
end insecurity that is worrying our people and is a major problem to the
subnationals and they carefully chose the governors of the places affected by
banditry and kidnapping,” Radda said on Friday’s edition of Channels
Television’s Politics Today.
He
added: “All of us sat for three days and we were able to cross-fertilise ideas
and interact with all stakeholders that are involved in bringing about lasting
peace and security globally,” the governor said.
Speaking
on criticism over the summit, with many questioning why it was held in the US
and not in Nigeria, Radda said: “The meeting was not at the instance of the
selected governors of northern states but it was at the instance of the United
States Institute of Peace. They were the people who invited us; they hosted us
for the meeting. We were invited to sit with them so that we could bring about
lasting solutions to the problems that are affecting our people.”
Naija
News understands that the northern part of Nigeria has been facing security
challenges in recent years including banditry, kidnapping, and a range of
security issues.
Scores
of people have been killed and many abducted since the security challenge
heightened. Amid several reasons given on the rising spate of insecurity in the
northern region, Radda has ruled out political undertones.
”The
hypothesis behind political motive as responsible for banditry is not true,”
the Katsina State governor said, highlighting injustice and poverty as the root
causes of insecurity in the north.

Clover's
ties with Israel prompt break-up with Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust
3
May 2024
JOHANNESBURG
- The Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust (MJCHT) says it’s continuing
surveillance on the production of Clover products until the branding runs out.
Clover
is associated with the Central Bottling Company of Israel.
The
prominent food and beverages group is set to lose its Halaal certification in
August, after the council's decision nine months ago.
The
council says the move is part of its policy to certify goods from
Israeli-occupied territories or companies owned by Israeli entities operating
in those territories.
It’s
the end of an era for branded food and beverages group Clover, following
MJCHT’s decision to remove its logo from its products.
Ten
years ago, the council certified new Clover products after the dairy giant was
questioned about its products not bearing the Halaal logo.
But
now, a decade later, the MJCHT has severed ties with Clover citing its support
for Israel.
The
council says it will not support companies that support the bombardment and
continued attacks on Gaza.
“The
MJC will decline the certification of any Israeli-based companies or their
directly controlled foreign subsidiaries and the company in question folds into
this category,” said the council’s spokesperson Zakariyya Philander.
Negotiations
between the two parties have resulted in an agreement to gradually phase out
branded products until the logo is removed from the shelves officially in
August.
