DUBAI:
US streaming giant Netflix is partnering with Lebanon’s Arab Fund for Arts and
Culture (AFAC) to grant five female Arab filmmakers $250,000 to bring their
work to life.
The
one-off award will be delivered through the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity,
which was set up in 2021.
The
initiative aims to create opportunities for underrepresented communities in the
entertainment industry and increase the equality of women both on and off
screen.
The
five women shortlisted for the grant are Moroccan director Asmae El-Moudir with
the documentary “The Mother of All Lies,” Tunisian creative Sarra Abidi with
her film “My Name Is Clara,” and Lebanese filmmakers Diala Kachmar with “From
the Other Shore,” Jana Wehbe with “The Day Vladimir Died” and Tania Khoury with
“Manity.”
“We
are committed to telling stories about and by women across our slate in the
Arab world,” said Nuha El-Tayeb, Netflix’s director of content acquisitions for
the Middle East and Turkey, in a blog post announcing the initiative.
“The
Arab world has a long-standing history of women in entertainment, and we’ve had
incredible successes and firsts from the region that we’re all very proud of.
But in order to give more people a chance to see their lives reflected on
screen, we need more women behind and in front of the camera,” she wrote.
This
is not the first time Netflix has teamed up with AFAC. In 2020, the streaming
service issued a $1 million hardship fund to support Arab crew and freelancers
in the film and TV industry during the pandemic.
“More
and more Arab women filmmakers are creating moving images that have the power
to shed light on the realities of the region,” said AFAC Executive Director
Rima Mismar. “This second collaboration with Neftlix, this time to support
women in the field of cinema, complements perfectly AFAC’s mission to promote
diversity of voices and narratives.”

PARIS
Two
Muslim women wearing headscarves, or the hijab, who were beaten by French
police last Thursday on the Clichy Bridge will file a complaint against the
officers, their lawyer announced on Twitter.
Nabil
Boudi said his clients, who were subjected to police violence, still cannot get
over the shock of the incident, but they are determined to see that justice is
served.
The
complaint will be filed directly to the General Inspectorate of the National
Police (IGPN) for willful violence by public officers.
Video
footage of the attack showed the police had beaten two women wearing
headscarves for minutes in the middle of the road, punched one of them, and
tried to throw the other one to the ground.
In
other video footage taken by a woman passing by, the police continued to attack
the women despite warnings from people at the scene, claiming they had the
authority to beat them.
After
the video footage went viral, many users on social media commented that the
French police were Islamophobic.
The
Paris Police Department in a statement claimed that the two women prevented a
police car from stopping a suspicious vehicle by crossing the road.
Based
on witnesses' reports, it was stated that contrary to the French police's
statement that the police had beaten the two young women, who were exercising
their right of passage, for Islamophobic reasons and that the statement was
"made up" to protect the police.

Divorced
Muslim woman can claim maintenance as long as she does not remarry: Allahabad
High Court
Abhishek
Mishra
April
18, 2022
Allahabad
High Court on Monday held that a divorced Muslim woman can claim maintenance
from her husband under section 125 of Criminal Procedure Code until she remarries.
A woman is entitled to claim maintenance from her husband even after the expiry
of the 'iddat' period.
According
to Islamic law, a divorced woman has to wait during the 'iddat' period for
about three months before she can remarry.
Hearing
the matter, a division bench of Justice Karunesh Singh Pawar made the
observation while modifying the order of the trial court passed in January 2007
and also allowed the review petition filed against the order passed by the
Additional Sessions Judge, Pratapgarh in May 2008.
A
Muslim woman had moved to the trial court seeking maintenance for herself and
her two minor children. The trial court awarded maintenance to them from the
date of the order had passed. The husband then challenged the trial court order
before the Additional Session Judge (ASJ), Pratapgarh, by filing a revision
plea.
The
Additional Session Judge then overturned the order saying since a divorced
Muslim woman is entitled to maintenance under section 3 and section 4 of the
Act, she is not entitled to get maintenance under section 125 of CrPC.
Importantly,
the court had said that since the wife has accepted the divorce, she would be
guided by the provisions of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce)
Act. The petition filed by her seeking maintenance under section 125 of CrPC
will not be maintainable.
Allahabad
High Court noted that the provisions under Section 125 CRPC have beneficial
laws and the benefits should be available to divorced Muslim women. Further,
relying on Shabana Bano case, the court concluded that divorced Muslim women
shall be entitled to claim maintenance from her husband even after the expiry
of the period of iddat under section 125 of CRPC only until she remarries.Live

Females To Get ‘Women Safety App’
April
19, 2022
QUETTA:
Balochistan
Ombudsperson for the Protection against Harassment of Women, Advocate Sabra
Islam on Monday said that Balochistan police has decided to launch a
"Women Safety App.”
The
Balochistan women ombudsman anti-harassment login port will also be included in
the app.
"In
order to provide immediate legal aid to women in Balochistan, the police has
decided to register liaison and complaints through a mobile application under modern
technology and preliminary work has been completed in this regard," Sabra
said, referring to her meeting held with DIG IT at CPO office.
She
noted that a port will also be provided for logging in so that the harassed
women can contact and register complaints through this app.
Registered
complaints will also be dealt without any delay and police assistance will also
be obtained in cases of interference.
Concluding
the need for adopting technology, Sabra said it is necessary to address the
incidents of harassment through the Federal Investigation Agency’s cybercrime
wing and the Balochistan Ombudsperson.
In
this regard, the FIA would also be approached to discourage the elements
involved in the blackmailing of women and bring them to justice trying them as
per the existing laws.
She,
however, opined that in order to end harassment, it is necessary to impose
exemplary punishments on the accused persons involved in such incidents so that
such crimes could effectively be discouraged.
Advocate
Sabra further said the Women Safety App introduced by the police in Balochistan
would prove to be an extraordinary step towards addressing unfortunate
incidents against women.

Turkey
Embraces Children Affected By War, First Lady Erdogan Says
APR
19, 2022
First
lady Emine Erdoğan hosted Ukrainian children for an iftar, a dinner to mark the
breaking of the daily fast, at the Presidential Complex in the capital Ankara
on Monday.
"Here
you are in your own home ... All of our cognates are our dear siblings. All the
people of the world are our close relatives from the human family," she
said, addressing her guests in a speech, including Crimean Tatar children.
Saying
that she sees the children as her own grandchildren, Erdoğan asked the children
to consider her as their mother or grandmother.
“You
deserve the best of everything. I will always support you and stand by you to
be happy and make your dreams come true," the first lady said.
Erdoğan
also stressed Turkey's diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war between Russia
and Ukraine.
Underlining
that the only criteria that determine Turkey's humanitarian aid policies are
humans, the first lady said that Turkey offers a hand of friendship to all
countries, people, women and children.
"We
regard children as the common trust of humanity," Erdoğan said, adding
Turkey currently hosts nearly 4 million refugees.
Noting
that upon a letter sent by her Ukrainian counterpart Olena Zelenska, she
started an initiative to host Ukrainian orphans in Turkey, Erdoğan highlighted
that Turkey currently hosts 772 Ukrainian orphaned children.
Erdoğan
also expressed her hope that the international community would react as
strongly to all wars in all geographies.
After
her speech, Ukrainian children gave the gifts they made to Erdoğan. Erdoğan
then offered the cotton candy she prepared to the children.
Crimean
Tatar singer Jamala, who was among the guests, thanked President Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan and Emine Erdoğan for their invitations and assistance.
Saying
they went through difficult times and the war in Ukraine continues, Jamala said
that shortly after the war started, many people had to leave their country and
become refugees.
"We
are grateful to Turkey. Because Turkey accepted us, Turkey opened its doors to
us, Turkey protected us. Long live Turkey, long live Ukraine," she said.
