KABUL – As politicians, celebrities and activists
condemned the ongoing Hijab row in India’s southwest region, Taliban officials
also extended their support to Muskan Khan for standing up for Islamic values.
The Deputy spokesman Afghanistan, Inamullah Samangani,
shared a tweet as a hijab-wearing student was heckled by a right-wing while she
refused to step back and chanted Allahu Akbar.
“The struggle of Indian Muslim girls for hijab shows
that hijab is not an Arab, Iranian, Egyptian or Pakistani culture, but an
Islamic value for which Muslim girls around the world sacrifice in various ways
and defend their religious value”, Taliban official wrote on microblogging
platform and shared the viral picture of the Muskan who stands against Hindutwa
inspired mob.
Taliban official said it was pleasing to see Muslim
women stand for their religious values and make sacrifices to defend it in
various ways, especially in the ‘secular world’.
Following the takeover of the war-ravaged country in
August 2021, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen clarified that the group will not
force women to wear the full burqa instead, the hijab would be compulsory.
Meanwhile, the incident with an Indian girl, who was
terrorized by Saffron terror, drew condemnation from the politicians,
celebrities. Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai, said the situation was
“horrifying” and called on Indian leaders to stop the “marginalisation of
Indian women”.
The hijab controversy started erupted last month when
a state-run college denied entry to eight women wearing hijab. The Muslim women
then moved the high court seeking permission to attend classes with hijab,
stating that it is their ‘fundamental right’ granted under Article 14 and 25 of
the Indian Constitution and ‘integral practice of Islam’.
Meanwhile, all educational institutions were closed in
Karnataka after the state-runschools imposed a ban on hijabs, which sparked
widespread protests.
On Wednesday, the Karnataka high court referred
petitions challenging the ban to a larger panel as masses demonstrated against
the ban in India's largest cities.

Hijab row: JNU women students extend solidarity to
Muslim students in Karnataka
February 10, 2022
New Delhi: Around 200 women students of the Jawaharlal
Nehru University (JNU) have extended their "unflinching and unconditional
support" to Muslim students in Karnataka, saying prohibiting women from
wearing hijab reflects the "patriarchal and Islamophobic tendencies"
of the state and its institutions.
In a statement, the students said forcing Muslim women
to give up their hijab is a clear violation of Article 25 of the Indian
constitution which guarantees religious freedom, and forbidding them from
entering the classroom infringes upon Article 21 (A) and Article 15, which
guarantee the right to education and prohibit discrimination based on religion,
race, caste, sex or place of birth respectively.
Last week, the Karnataka government issued an order
making uniforms prescribed by it or management of private institutions
mandatory for its students at schools and pre-university colleges across the
state.
Protests erupted in the state over students being
denied entry to educational institutions due to the hijab.
"We, the women students of JNU, uphold the right
of these women to practice their religion and their choice to wear or not wear
a hijab, along with their right to education. Disciplining these women, on
their choice of clothing and prohibiting them from wearing a hijab reflects the
patriarchal and Islamophobic tendencies of the state and its institutions.
"If the choice to not wear a hijab is endorsed in
the light of empowerment, one cannot exhibit condescending attitude against
one's choice of wearing a hijab," the statement read.
The JNU students pointed out that the attempt of these
Muslim students to register their protest is "being criminalized as part
of a theory of larger conspiracy".
"In the face of this toxic display of
masculinity, the bigotry and Islamophobia and against the sustained attacks on
the rights and safety of Muslim women, we the women students of JNU, extend our
unflinching and unconditional solidarity and support to these brave Muslim
women students in Karnataka and the choice of Muslim women to wear a
hijab," the statement read.
As protests for and against wearing of the headscarf
by Muslim women students in class-rooms intensified in different parts of
Karnataka and turned violent in some places, the Karnataka government on 8
February, 2022, declared a holiday to all high schools and colleges in the
state for three days.

Hijab row: Muslim women in Tamil Nadu protest against
Karnataka government
February 9, 2022
Muslim women and some men belonging to Tamil Nadu
Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) held a protest on Wednesday condemning the
Karnataka government over the hijab row.
More than 50 Muslim women wearing hijab protested at
Ukkadam in Coimbatore, blaming the Karnataka government for allowing a lone
Muslim girl student get heckled by a group of men wearing saffron shawls.
The protesters raised slogans that wearing hijab is
their right which is protected by the Constitution.
Karnataka government introduced a government order
introducing a new uniform policy which gives power to government or
institutions to decide the dress code. Following this, Muslim girl students
were barred from attending classes wearing hijab in Udupi. The protests have
now spilled across various colleges in the state.
Rashidha Begum, Women Wing Secretary of TMMK stated
that Muslims are being targeted and their basic rights are in danger.
“Hijab has become a controversy now. How is our hijab
causing problem to others. It is a pride for us to wear hijab and we follow the
Quran," Begum said.
Has anyone so far stated that they were affected by us
wearing a hijab? questioned Begum.
A single-judge bench of Justice Krishna Dixit has
referred the Karnataka hijab matter to a larger bench.
The decision came after Advocate General Prabhuling
Navadagi, appearing for Karnataka, opposed the grant of interim relief to allow
students to attend colleges wearing hijab.

wearing of hijab are expected to reach the poll bound Punjab on Thursday.
Punjabi actor Sonia Mann has decided to wear hijab as a mark of protest and

With Malerkotla being the only town in Punjab having

dress is direct attack on their individuality. No one can enforce conditions
over what should be worn or what not at educational institutions. It is matter
of choice of anyone and aiming to raise this issue I will go to Amargarh where
many youngsters and women have decided to stand by me to raise the issue and
take out a march", Sonia Mann told TOI.
We want to stand by our Muslim sisters in this hour

Turkey voices concern over disappearance of Afghan
woman activists
FEB 09, 2022
Turkey expressed concern Wednesday over recently
reported disappearances of Afghan woman activists.
Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in a phone call with
Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting foreign minister of Afghanistan’s interim Taliban
government, said that Turkey is concerned about reportings of disappearances
while he also reiterated that the education of girls is vital.
Çavuşoğlu said that a well-attended administration is
necessary for stability and peace in Afghanistan. The two further discussed the
reopening of Maarif schools in Afghanistan.
When the Taliban first ruled Afghanistan between 1996
and 2001, they became notorious for human rights abuses, with women mostly
confined to their homes.
Now back in government and despite promising softer
rule, they are cracking down on women's freedoms once again.
There is enforced segregation in most workplaces,
leading many employers to fire women staff, and women are barred from key
public sector jobs.
Haunted by memories of the last Taliban regime, some
Afghan women are too frightened to venture out or are pressured by their
families to remain at home.
Interim Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah
Mujahid denied any women being held but said authorities had the right "to
arrest and detain dissidents or those who break the law" after the
government banned unsanctioned protests soon after coming to power.
The United Nations and Human Rights Watch are among
those calling on the Taliban to investigate disappearances.
The U.N. human rights office called on Tuesday to
release four women activists and their relatives in Afghanistan who were
detained or abducted last month after protests over women's rights since the
Taliban seized control.
Muttaqi and Çavuşoğlu also discussed the latest
situation in operating Afghanistan’s airports by a Turkey-Qatar joint company.
After the Taliban seized control of the country,
Turkey offered technical and security assistance to operationalize Kabul Hamid
Karzai International Airport. Keeping the airport open after foreign forces
handed over control is vital to keeping Afghanistan connected with the world
and maintaining an uninterrupted supply of aid for distribution.
Turkey and Qatar aim to run the airports in Kabul,
Mazar-I Sharif, Kandahar and Herat.
