6 Turkish Women Sentenced To Death For Joining IS

BAGHDAD - A Baghdad court on Monday sentenced six Turkish women to death and a seventh to life in prison for membership of the Islamic State militant group, a judicial source said.
The source told AFP that the women, all accompanied by small children in the court, had surrendered to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters after having fled Tal Afar, one of the last IS bastions to fall to Iraqi security forces last year.
The women told the court they had entered the country to join their husbands fighting for IS in the “caliphate” which the group declared in 2014 in territory straddling Iraq and Syria. Iraq in February condemned another 15 Turkish women to death on the same charge.
Since January, a German woman and a woman from Turkey have also been handed the death penalty, in rulings which Human Rights Watch (HRW) has condemned as “unfair”.
Experts estimate that a total of 20,000 people are being held in jail in Iraq for alleged membership of IS.
There is no official figure.
Iraq has detained at least 560 women, as well as 600 children, identified as militant or relatives of suspected IS fighters.
Separately, authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan said in early February they had detained some 4,000 suspected IS members, including foreigners.
Iraq’s anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped IS even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.
It also allows for the death penalty to be issued against anyone - including non-combatants - found guilty of belonging to IS.
The New York-based HRW has urged Iraqi authorities to “develop a national strategy to prioritise the prosecution of those who committed the most serious crimes”.
Women suspected only of IS membership rather than any combat role are “getting the harshest possible sentences for what appears to be marriage to an ISIS (IS) member or a coerced border crossing,” it said.
Many foreign widows of IS fighters have said they had been fooled or threatened by their husbands to travel to Iraq.

10 Pakistan women to showcase their talent in Australia

ISLAMABAD: As many as 56 Pakistan athletes are representing their homeland in the Commonwealth Games 2018, being held at Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4 to April 15. The players will showcase their skills in different sports including hockey, swimming, table tennis, squash, weightlifting, shooting among others. The Pakistan squad is going up against more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories. In a squad comprising mostly men, ten Pakistan women hope to make their mark in their respective categories.
Najma Parveen: Born in 1990, Najma Parveen hails from Faisalabad. She will represent her homeland in athletics and participate in women’s 200m and 400m hurdles and relays. Najma was a part of Pakistan’s squad in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She has been terrific in multiple events in which she has been featuring for the last few years. Her favourite events are 100m, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and relays. In April last year, she won six gold medals in the National Athletics Championship in Karachi.
Bisma Khan: Born in 2002, the teenager, who hails from Lahore, will participate in women’s 50m freestyle, women’s 100m freestyle and women’s 50m backstroke swimming competitions. She previously participated in Commonwealth Games in 2014 and ranked 32. During the South Asian Games 2016, the young swimmer won her first international medal for Pakistan in 50m backstroke. The child prodigy secured six gold medals and created two records even before turning 13.
Palwasha Bashir: Born on October 20, 1987, Palwasha Bashir hails from Karachi. The athlete will be representing the country in the sport of badminton. During the events being held from April 10 to April 15, she will compete in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Palwasha will also be a part of the team playing against Scotland, India and Sri Lanka during the mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games.
Mahnoor Shahzad: The 21-year-old badminton player, who hails from Karachi, will participate in women’s singles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team event. A student of Karachi’s Institute of Business Administration, Mahnoor won the singles final during the International Badminton Tournament. Players from foreign countries such as Turkey, Nepal and Sri Lanka also participated in the competition, which was held from November 9 to November 12, last year.
Minhal Sohail: Born n 1995, Minhal will feature in the women’s 10m air rifle shooting competition at the commonwealth games. The 23-year-old created history by representing Pakistan in the women shooting category at the Olympics game in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Mehwish Farhan: The 31-year-old Karachiite will represent the country in women’s 10m air pistol shooting competition. Mehwish Farhan has previously participated in Asian Games 2014, where she secured the 37th position.
Faiza Zafar: The 22-year-old squash player will represent Pakistan in the categories of women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The young athlete, who hails from Sialkot, has won many national level squash championships.
Madina Zafar: Born in 1998, the teenage squash player hails from Gujranwala. She will participate in women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories at the commonwealth games.
Fatima Khan: Born in 2001, Fatima Khan hails from Lahore. The female table tennis player will be representing Pakistan in women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories.
Hareem Anwar Ali: The 18-year-old table tennis player will represent Pakistan in women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories. Hareem Anwar Ali hails from Karachi.

Iran: Marriage of girl children promoted by state TV serial

A TV serial broadcast during Nowruz holidays has been widely criticized by children’s rights activists in Iran for promoting marriage of girl children.
The serial called, “Paytakht” or th capital, which is a comedy making fun of the marriage of two teenage girls, 12 or 13 years old, has created great concern among children’s rights advocates.
According to children’s rights advocates, the TV serial which makes fun of early marriage has already violated many children’s rights in the form of teasing and dialogues between the serial characters and the producers must account for them.
The bill proposing increasing the age of marriage for girls has been pending for years in the parliament and opposed by male members of parliament.
According to Farshid Yazdani, social researcher and executive director of the Children’s Rights Association, said nearly 13,000 girl children had become widows because of divorce in 2015, alone. The number of girl children who have married under 15 years of age in Iran, increased from 33,000 in 2006 to 43,000 in 2009, that is 30 per cent in only three years. Shahrbanou Imami, member of Tehran’s City Council and former member of parliament has asserted that there are 15,000 widows in Iran under 15 years of age. (The state-run ILNA news agency – March 8, 2018)
Zahra Ayatollahi, head of the Social-Cultural Council of Women and Family at the Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council, also asserted in a television interview that based on the statistics of the National Statistics Center, there were 36,422 marriages of girls under 15 years of age last year (March 2016-March 2017). An NGO announced that 1,200 girl children under 14 years of age had turned widows in 2015 and that there were 2,000 child widows between 9 and 12 years old.

Islam does not permit women to come out in public spheres, says Kerala Sunni leader

Kerala Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliar has once again kicked off a controversy with his sexist remarks. Kanthapuram who is also the Chief of Sunni Youth Society has said that unlike men, women should not come out in public spheres.
"If women come forward that could lead to violence and disaster", he added.
While speaking at a programme organised by Sunni Youth Society, Kanthapuram said, "women, unlike men, should not come out in public spheres as Islam has not permitted so and it has certain reasons. If woman come forward that could lead to violence and disaster and there are examples to substantiate this view".
Kanthapuram is one of the strongest Sunni Muslim leaders in Malabar region of Kerala. This statement comes just weeks after a Kerala professor said that Muslim girls were not wearing hijab correctly and intentionally exposing their chests like 'sliced watermelon'.
Though a case was registered against the professor based on the complaint filed by one of the female students, the police have made no arrest yet.
Interestingly, Sunni Youth Society has carried out a demonstration last week extending their support for the professor. They condemned the action taken by police i.e registering a case against the professor.
The comments made by Kanthapuram have been heavily criticised.

Rampur: At triple talaq bill protest, men-women united by cause & faith, separated by gender

Hundreds of Muslim men and burka-clad women from across the state, and beyond, gathered here today to protest against a proposed bill to abolish the practice of instant triple talaq in Islam.
While the protesters were joined by the cause and the faith, they were separated by their gender -- curtains between male and female protesters, and separate microphones and daises for them.
All the female participants had their burkas on and those who addressed them had also their faces covered in the traditional Islamic way.
They said they saw the proposed bill, which has already been passed by the Lok Sabha, as an "assault" on the Shariyat, and by separating men and women this way they wanted to emphasise their firm belief in the "ideals formulated by preachers of pious ideology".
The arrangements were in accordance with Islamic traditions, said one of the organisers, explaining the symbolism.
Mufti Zahid Ali Khan of Aligarh alleged, The present government intends to destroy our pious traditions by exhibiting false sympathies (towards women).
The bill passed by the Lower House is called The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017' and it lists its objective as to protect the rights of married Muslim women and to prohibit divorce by pronouncing talaq by their husbands.
The Mufti said that thousands of widows in Kashi and Mathura have been left "without proper protection" but instead of helping them out, the government was making "attempts to interfere in our Shariyat".
In an apparent derision of the concept of live-in relationship, he said, "It's a conspiracy to allow the society to live in relationship like husband and wife which is unethical and against our ideals formulated by preachers of pious ideology.
He urged Muslims to unite against the "plans to attack the Islamic faith, traditions and directives of Shariyat and defeat the interference".
Professor Tahmin Athar from Hydrabad said, Any alteration in the Shariyat is neither permissible nor tolerable."
Bushra Fatima of Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal claimed the bill has the support of "a small section of Muslim women whereas crores of Muslim women have been protesting against it.
Hamida Bano, the Principal of Jamiat-us-Salehat said, We are proud of the Shariyat and we are not in need of other rules because it's (Shariyat) a god-gifted thing for the followers of Islam.

Not Captive to Political Cost-Benefit: AIMPLB Women Members Find Fault With President's Speech

New Delhi: The women wing of All India Muslim Personal Law Board has expressed its “disappointment” with President Ram Nath Kovind’s speech during the joint parliamentary session on January 29 where he spoke about how the triple talaq legislation would “emancipate” Muslim women.
Dr Asma Zehra, executive member of AIMPLB, told News18 that an official memorandum would be presented to the President or his secretary tomorrow where the women members have stated that they “are safe within their personal law and that they do not need any kind of emancipation.”
President Kovind, in his joint session speech, had said: “For decades, the dignity of Muslim women has remained captive to political cost-benefit. Now the Nation has an opportunity to emancipate them from this situation. My Government has tabled a Bill on Triple Talaq in Parliament. I hope that the Parliament will soon pass it into a law. The law on Triple Talaq, once enacted, will also enable Muslim sisters and daughters to live a life of self-respect with courage.”
However, AIMPLB member Dr Zehra said that “this is nothing but a direct attack on the principles of Islam, which is the first among the world's religions to give equal rights regarding dignity and respect to the woman.”
“The entire concept of divorce, inheritance, women's share in property, was given by Islam in 610 to 630, 1440 years ago. We regret to submit that the remarks have hurt the sentiments of Muslim women and are disrespecting because in Islam Muslim women do not want this emancipation. We are very happy with our personal law and appeal to take back this bill as it is against the Constitution of India, women rights, and gender justice,” reads the official memorandum.
Dr Zehra also said that the statements coming from the President has made it a serious issue and that “in no way was it liberating for Muslim women”.
“The bill is anti-children. This law vests woman with the right of custody and bringing up of children. At the same time, husband will bear the maintenance of children. However the Present guardianship and wards act places premium on the child's interest. Husband or wife, whoever can protect interest better will have custody,” states the memorandum.
The triple talaq legislation in question has a provision for a maximum three year jail term for husband resorting to instantaneous divorce and also gives woman the custody of child when husband is in jail.
AIMPLB has also recently organised a lot of protest marches across the country airing its grievance with the impending legislation.
The board will hold a silent protest in the capital tomorrow before the memorandum is submitted to President Kovind.

Iran: Women stage protest in Shadegan, Khuzistan

A group of women staged a protest on Sunday, April 1, 2018, in the streets of Shadegan (southwestern Iran) chanting in Arabic, “I give my life for Ahwaz.”
The protest took place in step with the protests and demonstrations of thousands of Arab Iranians since Wednesday, March 28, against an offensive program insulting Iran’s Arab citizens broadcast by the state television in Nowruz holidays.
The protests have continued until late Sunday night, April 1, in Ahwaz and other cities and villages of Khuzistan.
Security forces have been dispatched from other cities and stationed in Khuzistan cities on Monday, April 2, to quell any outbreak of protests during this traditional Persian holiday on the 13th day of the New Year, called Sizdebedar. Reports from Ahwaz, Abadan, Khorramshahr, Mahshahr and other cities indicate a de facto state of curfew in most of Khuzistan cities.
At least two women have been identified among those arrested during the protests in Ahwaz on Friday, March 30, 2018.

Islamic Development Bank aims to empower women

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) aims to improve women’s access to infrastructure that will offer economic opportunities through Islamic microfinance, Bandar Hajjar, president of the bank, said on Monday.
Speaking at the "Partnerships for Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment" session at the 43rd annual IDB meeting in Tunis, Hajjar said: "The empowerment of women is at the core of the Bank’s development strategy."
He said the IDB has been contributing to the empowerment of women with various interventions to promote its member countries in improving health, food security, economic opportunities and education.
"The IDB aims to do this by strengthening partnership with member countries to improve the status of women in the Muslim World, blended with longer-term economic development and capacity development initiatives toward self-development and sustained growth," he added.
He announced that to achieve this, the bank would launch a new initiative called "SheCan".
"If given the opportunity SheCan transforms her families, communities and economies resulting in more inclusive, productive and resilient societies," he said.
He also stressed the bank continued its regular operations to empower women in priority sectors, such as energy, education, transport, health and Islamic finance.
The IDB was designed to ensure that women have equal access and control over available resources, he underlined.
"I am confident that through partnerships with government institutions, the private sector, civil society, academia, multilateral banks and international organizations we can create make transformative change in empowering women to advance their role in social and economic spheres of life," he said.
Mohammad Naciri, director of the Regional Office for the Arab States of the United Nations, said that it would be naive to think of achieving economic empowerment without partnerships.
"Around 40 percent of women in the Middle East and South Africa regions are not part of the workforce," he stressed.
Soukeina Bouraoui, executive director of the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research, expressed that women could do more for their society and the IDB could help by strengthening their engagement.
"We are working with the IDB and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) for instance in Senegal, we have helped 600 women achieve economic independence," she said.
Representatives of 57 member states, senior government officials and ministers of finance, economy, planning and international development are attending the five-day meeting in Tunis.
