A True Believer Expresses Thankfulness to Allah, the Exalted, In All Situations

 Be Successful and Avoid Becoming Losers, That Is, Be Patient and Grateful Under All Circumstances

Allah Azzawajal says in the Quran, “And when some hardship strikes man, he prays to his Lord, inclined only towards Him – then when Allah grants him a favour from Himself, he forgets why he had prayed to Him earlier, and sets up equals to Allah in order to mislead from Allah’s way; proclaim, “Revel in your disbelief for some days; you are indeed of the people of the fire.” (39:8)

In another, He Almighty says,

“And when some hardship reaches man he prays to Us, while reclining and sitting and standing; and when We remove his hardship, he goes away as if he had never prayed to Us because of any hardship; this is how the deeds of the transgressors are made seeming good to them.” (10:12)

The meaning of these verses is that humans are very impatient in times of trouble and very ungrateful in times of relief. When they face trouble and distress, they start praying while standing, sitting, lying and in all circumstances. When Allah Almighty removes their trouble and affliction, they do not pay thanks to Him and instead return to their previous position. This is the condition of irresponsible people. The situation of the sensible believer is against it. He is patient in adversity, gives thanks in comfort and ease, cries and supplicates to Allah Almighty in all situations of distress and comfort. There is a higher rank prepared for certain servants among the believers, who, when a misfortune strikes, are patient and not only content with the judgment of Allah with all their heart and soul, but even in this situation, they express thanks to Allah Almighty.

What Is Our Situation In Times Of Trouble And Relief?

We should analyse our circumstances in light of the aforesaid interpretation. Which group are we a part of, and the symptoms of which can be found in us?

Are we the ones who only become worshipers, pious and remember Allah Azzawajal in times of suffering? Are we the ones who, once the affliction has passed, become lazy, thoughtless, and forget our Allah Azzawajal, without giving a second thought to the prayers we have missed? Or are we the ones who practice piety and remember Allah Azzawajal in both happy and sad times?

People nowadays are so consumed with the ups and downs of political, economic, and worldly life that their faith and peace of mind appear to have been stolen away from them. When you consider these Quranic verses, it's apparent that one of the traits and indicators of a real believer is that he can never be terrified of any misfortune, that he can never be afraid of worldly hardships. If you are a sincere believer, you will hear whispers of patience and appreciation in your heart and head even while you are in distress. That is, a real believer thanks Allah in all circumstances.

Allah Azzawajal also says,

 “And when We give the people a taste of mercy after adversity has touched them, at once they conspire against Our verses. Say, "Allah is swifter in strategy." Indeed, Our messengers record that which you conspire. (10:21) It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assume that they are surrounded, supplicating Allah, sincere to Him in religion, "If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful.” (10:22) “But when He saves them, at once they commit injustice upon the earth without right. O mankind, your injustice is only against yourselves, [being merely] the enjoyment of worldly life. Then to Us is your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do.” (10:23)

The extremist Kuffar of Arabia used to remember Allah in times of adversity, according to the exegesis on these verses. As a result, it is even more important for Muslims to remember Allah Azzawajal and supplicate to Him alone because it is only through Allah Azzawajal's blessing that all kinds of troubles and afflictions come to an end. They must remember, however, that after the troubled times have passed; they must never allow themselves to make the same mistakes that caused the trouble in the first place. In this regard, we can learn a lot from verse 10:23.

Because our entire lives are a test for us, patience is essential in all aspects of life. Allah Azzawajal says,

“[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving” (67:2)

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."  Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.” (2:155-157)

In this verse, Inna lillaahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raajiun translates as "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."

These words in Arabic are known as the words of Istirjaa’. We recite this phrase especially upon hearing bad news that has fallen upon ourselves or another, both as a sign of patience and an acknowledgement that Allah is the almighty, and He will not test His worshippers more than they can bear. We usually use it when someone passes away. However, this phrase has deep meaning and influence on several occasions. Using this phrase, a believer shows his slavery and humbleness in front of his God, as if he is saying, “O my Lord, everything comes from you, O my Lord, if you give us any blessing, it is Your Right to take it back, and I have no right to complain.”

The basic conclusion is that a person affected by comfort and distress can be in one of two states. Ingratitude and impatience are on one hand, while gratitude and patience are on the other. The first strategy relies on disbelief and hypocrisy, whereas the second relies on faith and belief. As a result, the one who is ungrateful for Allah Almighty's bounties and impatient in the face of adversity is a loser, whereas the person who works with patience and thankfulness even in difficult circumstances is the one who is successful.

Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “How wonderful is the case of a believer; it is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him”. [Sahih Muslim]
