Kamala
Harris’s potential presidency represents a historic opportunity for unity and
progress. As the first Black and South Asian woman Vice President, her unique
experiences could significantly change American politics. As a Jew and a
Muslim, we believe that a united effort from our communities can help elect
Harris and usher in an era of cooperation and understanding.
America has
endured numerous challenges, including proxy wars, the undue influence of the
military-industrial complex, and the power of special interest groups. These
issues have often hindered good governance and exacerbated divisions within our
society. Communities, particularly Muslims and Jews, have been deeply affected
by rising Islamophobia and antisemitism. If united, Muslims and Jews can
provide Kamala Harris with a victory.
Kamala
Harris’s leadership offers the potential to foster dialogue and understanding,
particularly in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict. Despite our differing
perspectives, we are united in our belief that effective and compassionate
leadership is essential. Harris’s approach to diplomacy and her commitment to
multilateral engagement can pave the way for a more balanced and equitable
approach to this conflict.
There have
been heartening instances of Jews and Muslims working together to promote peace
and solidarity worldwide. Grassroots movements have organized conventions and
rallies, bringing together Jewish and Palestinian citizens to discuss shared
grief, the impact of the war, and ways to promote hope and unity.
The Trump
administration’s policies, for example, relocating the U.S. embassy to
Jerusalem, expanding settlements, and acknowledging Israeli sovereignty over
the Golan Heights, have increased tensions and hindered peace efforts. In
contrast, we expect Kamala Harris to adopt a more diplomatic and balanced
approach, valuing both Israeli security and Palestinian rights. Her background
indicates a dedication to fostering peace and justice, creating a pathway for a
more equitable solution.
We are
hopeful that a President Harris would consider several actions:
Balanced Approach at the United Nations:
Kamala
Harris should adopt a balanced approach at the United Nations, avoiding
automatic vetoes that have characterized past U.S. policy. Thoughtful
deliberation and cooperation with international partners are crucial for fair
and effective global conflict resolution.
Audit U.S. Aid to Israel:
U.S. aid to
Israel should be thoroughly audited to ensure it aligns with American values and
international law. Transparency is vital for maintaining accountability and
fostering trust between the U.S. and all parties involved. Reviewing military
aid could involve scrutinizing its use in conflict zones to ensure compliance
with human rights standards.
Address Potential War Crimes:
If Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is found guilty of war crimes, Harris must
respond appropriately. This response should involve transparent decision-making
and open dialogue with global leaders to uphold justice.
End Support for Terrorist Groups:
The U.S.
should not support or provide weapons to terrorist groups like DAESH, nor
should it encourage regime changes globally. It is essential to prioritize
peace and stability over geopolitical manoeuvres.
Inclusive Cabinet:
Harris’s
cabinet should be inclusive, ensuring that minorities have input in formulating
domestic and foreign policy. Blacks, Jews, Latinos, and Muslims should have a
seat at the table to share their struggles and experiences. This inclusion will
help develop policies that improve the lives of all Americans.
Condemn Hate and Promote Human Rights:
National
leaders must unequivocally condemn hate and promote policies that protect
religious freedoms and human rights. Both Jewish and Muslim communities have
faced increased hostility and violence, making this imperative for Harris’s
administration.
Beyond the
Israel-Palestine conflict, Harris’s presidency could impact other critical
issues at home and abroad. Her administration might address the rising tide of
Islamophobia and antisemitism in the United States and around the world. Both
of our communities have faced increased hostility and violence in recent years,
making it imperative for national leaders to unequivocally condemn hate and promote
policies that protect religious freedoms and human rights.
Harris’s
approach to immigration reform could resonate deeply with both of our
communities. Many Muslims and Jews in the U.S. are immigrants or descendants of
immigrants who have sought refuge and a better life in this country. Harris’s
history as a child of immigrants suggests she understands the complexities and
challenges of the immigration system and the need for compassionate and just
reforms.
The climate
crisis is another area where Harris’s leadership could bring significant
change. Environmental issues often disproportionately affect marginalized
communities and underdeveloped countries in Africa, Pakistan, and India.
Harris’s commitment to addressing climate change could lead to policies that
protect the environment and promote environmental justice, ensuring that all
communities benefit from clean air, water, and a sustainable future.
As a Jew
and a Muslim, we find hope in Kamala Harris’ leadership and the possibility of
a future where peace, justice, and mutual understanding prevail. Our unity in
this message underscores our belief in compassionate and balanced leadership,
and we look forward to a future where our differences are respected, and our
shared humanity is celebrated.
