A division
bench of the Calcutta High Court on Friday, December 2, refused to intervene
over a petition filed against the religious programme involving sacrifice of
10, 000 goats on the occasion of Kali Puja at Bolla village in South Dinajpur
district, West Bengal.
Refusing to
intervene in the matter, the division bench of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam
and Justice Hirnamay Bhattacharya observed that since the faith of several
people are involved with the matter the court cannot intervene in the matter.

Not one or
two, but 10, 000 goats to be sacrificed for a tribal deity ! Yet, Hindus have
the gall to condemn the sacrifice of animals on the occasion of Bakrid. Agreed,
what ignorant Muslims do on Bakrid must be stopped because no Allah, if at all
it does exist, will be happy to receive such ghastly offerings in the name of a
hoary-old religious custom. But equally macabre is this custom of Hindus in
which a fierce-looking goddess, belonging to a subaltern society, feels good to
have the flesh and meat of poor and innocent animals. Shouldn't this gory
practice be banned forthwith? To hell with the faith and belief of primitive
and god-fearing followers. What's reprehensible must be condemned in no
uncertain terms. That this is happening in West Bengal, a relatively advanced
state with a large number of 'rational' and 'educated' people is all the more
shocking.
How can
followers eat the meat of bleating goats, sacrificed to placate a dreadful
deity having an appearance that can give nightmares to those who're
lily-livered? Are they so heartless and insensitive? I'm really baffled.
This faith
business is so strong that even the law of the land is helpless. Remember, a
few years ago, the current CJI, Dr Chandrachud ruled in favour of women,
whether menstruating or not, wanting to visit Sabrimala Temple in South India.
But other judges, devotees (including women) and temple management vetoed the
decision. Sabrimala is still closed for all.
Masses are
asses when it comes to religions, customs, gods and all that garbage. It's time
to think rationally. But do the benighted people even have a smidgen of reason
and vision? This is a million-dollar question. Isn't it?
