The Truth Behind Taliban's Fatwa Justifying Killings Of Innocent Civilians Part-3

Taliban’s Anti-Islam ideology and practices

The war strategy of the Taliban depends on terrorist attacks and suicide bombings. They train and brainwash Muslim youth to carryout suicide bombings in the name of jihad. The madrasas run by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam along Pakistan-Afghan border impart religious education to the impoverished and hapless refugee children belonging to Afghanistan whom the Taliban later force into joining their ranks as suicide bombers. On the command of the Taliban commanders, these youth commit suicide attacks losing their own lives and causing death to innocent people including children, women and elderly people. Thus by committing suicide the youth commit duel sin. They kill themselves and take the lives of others in the process. Therefore, the group that makes suicide bombings a war strategy can never be on the right path. The Quran says,

“Do not kill yourselves”. (An Nisa:29)

Exegetes agree that this verse is on the prohibition of suicide.

There are hadiths too that prohibit suicides and call self-killers the dwellers of hell.

Abu Hurayra also reported that the messenger of God said,

‘Whoever stabs himself to death will continue to stab himself in Hell. And whoever throws himself off a cliff will continue to throw himself off a cliff in Hell. And whoever hangs himself will continue to hang himself in the Hell.” (Sahih Bukhari).

The holy Prophet (PBUH) did not lead the funeral prayer of those who committed suicide.

Jabir bin Samura said,

‘Someone who killed himself with a spear was brought to the Prophet (PBUH) but he did not pray over him.’ (Sahih Muslim)

Therefore the group that inspires people to commit suicide and bloodshed cannot be called Islamic and will definitely be doomed for Hell.

Illegitimate sources of income

Various reports and surveys have exposed the fact that to carry on with their war, the Taliban gather funds from investment in opium trade and money charged for giving protection to the opium cultivation and transportation and through extortion. Afghan economy depends on opium cultivation which is worth four billion dollars annually. Therefore, the Taliban have to depend on the income earned from the cultivation and trade of opium which according to Islam is haram. Recently, a study published by Peter Grechen titled ‘How opium profits Taliban’ gives a detailed account of how the Taliban leaders and commanders invested and took part in the cultivation and trade of opium to fund and expand their insurgency. It says,

“From its inception, the movement appeared to rely on the financial backing of an unholy alliance of drug smugglers, traders, and trucking groups.” According to Grechen, many Taliban commanders invested money in opium trade and many commanders made money by selling secret opium stores and by giving protection to the opium farmers and truckers. According to the author, 65% of those surveyed said that the main activity of the Taliban commanders was to provide protection to the opium crops and charging money for sending the opium trucks to the desired destination under their protection. It is common among the Afghan leaders in tribal areas, whether they are Taliban or not, to charge cut money for letting the opium trucks pass through their areas. A former Taliban commander and the right hand of Mullah Omar Haji Bashar Noozai is serving a life sentence in Manhattan Jail for smuggling heroin worth millions of dollars for Taliban.

Taliban’s extremist or kharijite ideology

The tribulation (fitna) of kharijism surfaced during the caliphate of Hadhrat Ali (R.A.). The kharijites would consider themselves the true followers and flagbearers of Islam and called Hardhat Ali a deviant person and therefore refused to pay allegiance to him. They had declared those who did not subscribe to their ideology kafirs and worthy to be killed, even if they were Muslims. In Pakistan they have unleashed an ideological war against the minority sects like Ahmadis, Shias and Barelwis and the destruction of their places of worship and killing of their members are lawful according to their ulema. Every year many innocent people among these minority sects die and their places of worship, dargahs and graveyards are destroyed in their suicide attacks. In the areas controlled by them they have forcefully shut the barber shops who dared to shave beards of willing Muslims. They have also forced girls’ schools shut and declared girls’ education prohibited. In this way they want to impose their own interpretation of Islam.

In  2010, they conducted suicide attacks in Quetta killing  people who were taking part in a Shia procession protesting the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem on the Quds Day.(Were the Taliban expressing solidarity with Israel by doing so?).  They also carried suicide blast outside a mosque in Mardan where dozens of people coming out of the mosque were killed and about 200 were injured.

In 2008, the Taliban carried out two suicide attacks on an Army ammunition factory killing 59 people mostly Muslims.

In 2011, the Taliban carried out a terror attack in a dargah in Dera Ghazi Khan  killing 41 people. Taliban spokesman Ehasnullah Ehsan accepted responsibility for the attack. Earlier, in 2008, they had killed 70 people in Wah.

In July 2010, they carried out two suicide attacks on Data Ganj Baksh dargah and killed 42 people. They also killed 90 Ahmadis. Thus they have unleashed a reign of terror not against the minority sects but have terrorized the whole country.

This year on the occasion of Ashura, they carried out five blasts in five consecutive days killing more than 30 people.

The purpose behind giving the details of the blasts carried out by Taliban is to show that they have made killing innocent people their religion. They neither regret those killings nor show any grief on the death of those killed because in their view especially in the view of their so-called ulema like (Laden sidekick Yusuf Al Abeeri) the deceased were kafirs and apostates and so they deserved to be killed.

The Quran puts the value of life above everything else. To it, killing one life is synonymous with killing the entire humanity and saving one life is synonymous with saving the whole world. It says:

‘Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. (Al Maidha: 32)

Abu Hurairah reported that the prophet said, ‘If anyone helps in the murder of a believer, -- even if only with a few words, --- he will meet God with the words written on his forehead, ‘Hopeless of God’s mercy’.

Islam does not only guarantee the protection of life and property of the Muslims alone but also the life and property of all the minority communities like the Jews, the Christians, the Ahmadis, the Shias and the Hindus in Muslim countries and also grants them religious, social and cultural freedom. There are clear instructions on this issue in the Quran, the hadith and the fiqh but the Taliban consider all the factions other than them kafir and wajibul qatl.

Abu Bakr reported that the prophet (PBUH) said,

‘Any Muslim who unjustly kills a non-Muslim with whom there is a peace treaty, God will make paradise forbidden for him.” (Al Nasai)

Abdullah Bin Umar reported that the holy prophet (PBUH) said,

‘Anyone who kills a non-Muslim under treaty will not smell the fragrance of Paradise even though the fragrance of paradise can be smelt from a distance of forty years.” (Sahih Bukhari)

It should be mentioned here that those non-Muslims who live in a Muslm country as law abiding and peaceful citizens and respect the rule of law, are muahids (signatories of a peace treaty) and so it is the responsibility of the Muslims and the Muslim government to protect the life, property and honour and the religious, social and all other rights of those minorities.  Heaven is forbidden for those killing of such minorities.

Hadhrat Ali ibn Talib said,

‘If a Muslim kills a Christian, he should be killed in retribution.’

(Al Shybani in Al Hujja 4: 349)

Similarly, Imam Abu Hanifa said,

‘The blood money for a (peaceful) Jew, Christian or Zoroastrian is equal to that of a free Muslim’.

Therefore, there are a number of edicts and injunctions in the Quran, hadith and book of Islamic jurisprudence  that guarantee the protection of life, honour and property of the non-Muslim under the Musiim rule equating non-Muslims with the Muslims in terms of those rights. But the Taiban try to justify their killing and destruction of their property by producing perfidious fatwas from their own ulema.
