Fighting Verses Highlighted, but Patience and Trust Overlooked?

Why the Disproportionate Emphasis on Verses of Conflict and the Neglect of Patience and Reliance on God?

------

In today’s turbulent climate, a troubling trend has emerged: the moment the Qur’an is mentioned, some individuals immediately highlight only the verses related to fighting. These verses are then presented in such a way as if this divine book, meant to heal hearts, illuminate souls, and guide humanity, is merely a manifesto of conflict and militancy. The reality, however, is that the essence of the Qur’an is mercy, patience, wisdom, balance, justice, and compassion. Its pages are filled with the fragrance of forbearance, the radiance of reliance on God, and the blossoms of patience. Yet, regrettably, certain minds have grown accustomed to viewing the Qur’an from a single, narrow angle.

Among the Qur’an’s radiant teachings is the verse from Surah al-Nahl: “And those who are patient and place their trust in their Lord” (16:42). This verse honours the early believers who endured immense hardships during the initial days of Islam. They faced persecution, were expelled from their homes, and suffered physical and emotional abuse—yet their conviction never wavered. When their oppression became unbearable, they were commanded to migrate. This migration was not merely a physical journey, but a profound test of emotional, social, and economic sacrifice.

God promised these migrants that they would be granted a better abode in this world, and this promise was fulfilled in the form of Madinah—a city that offered them refuge, dignity, and peace. Madinah became a new dawn for faith, and the Qur’an reminded them that the ultimate reward lies in the Hereafter—far greater and everlasting.

These verses are not limited to the migrants of that era; they serve as guidance for believers in every age. They teach that trials do not weaken a person when patience and trust in God become one’s travelling companions. The Qur’an assures that every step taken in God’s path is meaningful, every sacrifice is preserved, and every tear shed is safeguarded with God.

Today, when some selectively highlight only one aspect of the Qur’an, it becomes essential to recall that the same scripture also presents powerful teachings on patience, kindness, ethics, and trust in God. The verses of Surah al-Nahl salute the faith, character, and perseverance of the migrants, reminding us that worldly comforts are temporary, while true success lies in the everlasting reward of the Hereafter.

Patience and trust in God do not imply passivity or inaction. Rather, they call for responsibility, wisdom, effort, and meaningful engagement with one’s challenges. One of the greatest issues before the global Muslim community today is education. Widespread illiteracy continues to obstruct collective development, and it is vital that leaders and citizens alike work sincerely to address this gap.

The rights of the poor and vulnerable also demand serious attention. A lack of proper understanding of zakat and charity, and the absence of an effective system, leave many deserving individuals deprived. Recently, the tragic case of a religious service-worker who took his own life due to overwhelming debt once again highlighted this failing. Such incidents underscore the urgent need for a stronger, more compassionate social-support system to ensure that such heart-breaking situations do not recur.

Reforming our social priorities is equally necessary. Extravagance in weddings is widespread, while assistance to impoverished families is limited. Many neighbourhoods have countless eateries and food outlets, yet few educational institutions. Though religious seminaries exist, the scarcity of modern and scientific educational institutions remains a barrier to progress. This is not a sectarian issue but an intellectual one, and addressing it requires collective commitment.

Family disputes, property conflicts, and social tensions are also widespread realities. Their resolution demands wisdom, dialogue, and institutional support. Emotional reactions and bitterness seldom resolve problems. The Qur’an teaches that when harsh words are spoken, believers are to respond with grace, for hostility is not extinguished by hostility—it is softened by patience and good conduct.

Finally, it must be acknowledged that, at times, religion is misused for personal interests, political gain, or group dominance, which undermines social harmony. This should be understood in a general, principled manner—without targeting any particular individual or faction. The true purpose of religion is justice, morality, mercy, and humanity. The Qur’an stands with those sincere hearts who remain steadfast upon truth with patience and place their complete trust in their Lord.
