When Bhagat Singh and his companions were
in jail, the example of the love shown for them by Indians outside the jail is
rarely seen anywhere in history for anyone.
Maulana Zafar Ali Khan used to be the
editor of an Urdu newspaper, 'Zamindar', published in Lahore. The love shown by
his newspaper for Bhagat Singh was extraordinary. Zafar Ali Khan's poems
terrorized the British government so much that the government of the day took
action on many of his poems and the newspaper.
One such poem, written while Bhagat Singh
was in jail, is here. In this Ghazal, Zafar Ali Khan asks the Muslim community
what is their part in the war for the freedom of the country, what are their
leaders doing and does their religion teach them slavery instead of sacrifice.
Following is the Ghazal - In The Memory
Of Martyrs Of The Country:
शहीदाने
वतन के ख़ून ए नाहक़ का जो सत निकले
तो उसके
ज़र्रे ज़र्रे से भगत सिंह और दत्त निकले
चढ़ा ईरान
में मंसूर अन’ल हक़ कहके सूली पर
मज़ा जब
है के तार-ए-हिंद से ऐसी ही गत निकले
मुसलमानों
ने अबतक कितने नौजवाँ किये पैदा?
जो आज़ादी
के गहवारे में पाकर तरबियत निकले
ख़ुदा हाफ़िज़
मुसलमानों के इक़बाल और दौलत का
ख़ुदा के
शेर भी निकले तो शीर-ए-आग़ा सिफ़त निकले
हक़ूक़-ए-मुस्लिमीं
के कुछ मुहाफ़िज़ चल दिए लंदन
मगर वो
भी पिरस्ताराने केश-ए-आफ़ियत निकले
निसार
इस रिंद-ए-आलम-ए-सोज़ पर सौ जां से है महफ़िल
के जिस
कूचे में जा निकले हरीफ़-ए-मस्लेहत निकले
