Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was also an Islamic religious
leader. When he was placed under house arrest in Ranchi during the Second World
War, he started offering Friday prayers in a nearby mosque. When he gave the
Khutba to accompany the prayer in Urdu, people were surprised that how could
Urdu leave the Arabic language. Soon every Friday, not only Muslims but Hindus
also started coming to the mosque to listen to this Khutba, in which there was
talk of Hindu-Muslim unity and nationalism.
