Terrorists Must Not Be Granted Martyrdom But Given Life in Jail

Pakistan's dispensations have failed the public too often - but the burial of 132 little coffins eclipses all other sins of the state.

The time has never been riper for the government to face some harsh truths.

Did we not foresee an aftermath to the war on terror? Or do mass murderers still have covert support from the government?

Where Malala’s Nobel Prize brought jubilation, was it not a clear signal that radicals will strike back?

Last but not least, in 2008, Baitullah Mahsood had issued a warning that every Taliban life lost will be compensated with more blood, which was overlooked.

A flurry of measures followed the carnage; some predictable and others, ludicrous.

On the one hand, the All Party Conference saw political leaders, including Imran Khan, put differences aside to concur that the annihilation of fanaticism was the sole route to any redemption and harmony.

And then, Sharif whipped out an order to abolish the moratorium on capital punishment so that terrorists on death row could perish to serve as a death knell for their bloodthirsty kin.

Estimates say Pakistan has over 400 inmates on death-watch and Amnesty International puts the number at 850.

In a world scenario where 150 countries have eliminated the death penalty, the country will dig its grave by plummeting to the level of the slayers.

The tragic-comedy does not cease here - a nation awoke to the announcement of bail for Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi - prime conspirator of the Mumbai terror attacks.

The news has not only stirred anger in the media, but is in conflict with Sharif’s stance on the death penalty.

Pakistan’s darkest day has left a message - terrorists must suffer a life sentence, and not be granted ‘martyrdom’ conferred on instant death.
