Zakir Naik Meets Lashkar-e-Taiba Terrorists At Lahore Mosque During Pak Visit

Subodh Kumar

Oct 19, 2024

Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, wanted in India for inciting hate and extremism, has been spotted meeting members of the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) during his visit to Pakistan. Naik, who arrived in the country on September 30 for a month-long visit as a state guest, met LeT commander Muzammil Iqbal Hashmi, Muhammad Harris Dhar and Faisal Nadeem -- declared 'international' terrorists by the US in 2008.

Footage authenticated by India Today shows Naik embracing Hashmi and other LeT terrorists at Lahore's Badshahi Mosque, where he addressed a gathering of over 150,000 people. The event was heavily secured by Lahore police.

Naik's visit to Pakistan as a "state guest", which is typically accorded to high-profile dignitaries and leaders of foreign nations, and his meetings with terrorists, has raised international concerns. India has called his visit "condemnable".

Ahead of the mosque event, LeT members, including Faisal Nadeem and Muzammil Hashmi, led an online campaign to promote Naik's visit.

Since 2016, Zakir Naik has been living in Malaysia after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) lodged a case against him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (now Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita).

The NIA action came after the Dhaka terror attack of July 2016, where one of the attackers admitted that he was influenced by Naik's preaching through his YouTube channel.

After The Riots In Bahraich: Hindu Vs Muslim Debate Erupts Over Encounter!

TaalThok Ke: After the riots in Bahraich, it is now the turn of action. Which has 3 points. First, 89 rioters have been arrested. Out of which 26 have been caught today, second, two main accused have also been encountered and now it is the turn of the third action i.e. bulldozer action. Yesterday, notices have been pasted on the houses of 23 riot accused. The 72-hour period is ending tomorrow. The government has said in the notice that if a house has been built within 60 feet from the main road, then remove your encroachment. After the notice is pasted, it is being considered certain that bulldozers can run in Bahraich anytime after October 21. A notice has been put up on the house of Hamid, the main accused in the murder of Ram Gopal. Those who have received the notice are removing the encroachment themselves. People who do not have papers also know that this is illegal, then why is the opposition raising questions on the notice? Out of the 23 people who have been given notice, 20 are Muslims and 3 are Hindus. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath discussed the Bahraich incident with senior officials today, while Akhilesh Yadav is questioning the UP government while standing in Maharashtra. Akhilesh is calling the encounter a murder. The opposition is accusing the action from a religious angle.

Pro-Iranian Groups Storm Saudi TV Offices In Baghdad For 'Insulting Resistance Leaders' In News Report

October 19, 2024

Supporters of pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq ransacked offices affiliated with a Saudi TV channel in Baghdad early Saturday, two security sources said, after the broadcaster aired a report referring to commanders of Tehran-backed militant groups as “terrorists”.

After midnight, between 400 and 500 people attacked the studios of a production company in Baghdad that works for the Saudi broadcaster MBC.

“They wrecked the electronic equipment, the computers, and set fire to a part of the building,” an interior ministry source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The demonstrators arrived at the offices before reinforcements of riot police were sent in,” a police source told AFP, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

The report had focused on “terrorism” in the region, and mentioned several groups and notable figures including, for instance, Osama bin Laden.

It included groups belonging to the so-called Axis of Resistance backed by Iran, which counts Hamas, Hezbollah and armed Iraqi factions among its members.

Named in the report were former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed by Israel in Beirut last month, and former Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran in July.

It also referred to Haniyeh’s successor, Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the October 7 attack on Israel and was killed in Gaza on Thursday, as the “new face of terrorism”.

The report came at a time when Iran-backed groups – most notably Hamas and Hezbollah, but also their allies in Yemen, Iraq and Syria – have been at war with Israel for more than a year.

The Sabreen News channel, which is close to pro-Iran factions in Iraq, distributed videos on Telegram of protesters in Baghdad brandishing the flags of various armed groups.

However, the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a nebulous group of pro-Iran armed groups, claims responsibility for frequent drone attacks against Israel.

Iraqi lawmaker Mustafa Sanad, a member of the pro-Iran majority, accused MBC of “insulting resistance leaders in all countries”, saying the report would have been more suited to Israeli TV.

Burkina Faso: Islamic Terrorists Kill More Than 150 In The Town Large Catholic Community

Photo: ACN United States/ The aftermath of the massacre in Manni, Burkina Faso in early October 2024.

------

October 20, 2024

On Sunday, October 6th, a new terrorist attack took place in the town of Manni, in the East Region of Burkina Faso. Various local sources told Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) that the death toll exceeded 150.

According to ACN, the town is home to a large Catholic community, and many Christians, as well as Muslims, were killed in the massacre.

Citing sources, ACN reported that the terrorists cut mobile phone networks before attacking the local market, where many people had gathered after Mass.

“They then opened fire indiscriminately, looted shops, and set fire to several buildings, burning some victims alive. The same sources reported that the next day, the perpetrators returned to attack medical staff and kill the many wounded in the city’s hospital. A new incursion took place on Tuesday, October 8th, when the terrorists again invaded the town of Manni, killing all the men they could find,” reported ACN.

Many of the victims were residents from nearby villages who sought refuge in Manni after being driven out of their homes by terrorists. “The situation is beyond horrific,” a local source told ACN. “But even if the terrorists burned everything, they didn’t burn our faith!”

ACN noted that In a message for priests, consecrated people, and laity on October 9th, Bishop Pierre Claver Malgo, of the Diocese of FadaN’Gourma, described the attack as “barbaric” and expressed his “sincere compassion for all the bereaved families,” insisting that “any threat to the dignity of man and to his life must touch the very heart of the Church.”

For US Universities, Arab And Muslim Lives Do Not Matter: Tahrir Coalition, A Union Of Pro-Palestinian Organisations

Three female pro-Palestinian protestors are detained by Wayne State University police after they protested the police raid of the campus encampment in Detroit, Michigan on May 30, 2024 [File: Reuters/Rebecca Cook]

------

Ahmad Ibsais

19 Oct 2024

On October 7, the Tahrir Coalition, a union of pro-Palestinian organisations at the University of Michigan, posted on social media what it said was a recording of the university’s president, Santa Ono.

In the audio file, a man’s voice can be heard talking about pressure from “powerful groups” and the threat of withholding federal funding if the university administration does not focus almost exclusively on combating anti-Semitism.

He states: “The government could call me tomorrow and say, in a very unbalanced way, the university is not doing enough to combat anti-Semitism. And I could say it’s not doing enough to combat Islamophobia, and that’s not what they want to hear.”

Although the Tahrir Coalition did not explain how they obtained the recording or when and where it was made, neither Ono, nor the university disputed its authenticity. Instead, the university administration issued a statement to the local newspaper Metro Times, saying: “The University of Michigan is steadfastly committed to ensuring our community remains a safe and supportive environment, where all students – regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or other identities – have the opportunity to learn and thrive.”

The problem is that the university is not committed to the safety and support of Muslim and Arab students. Of course, we did not need the leaked recording to know that, but it does provide the general public with an explanation of the university’s utter failure to support marginalised students.

Over the past year, we have watched in shock as mass slaughter has unfolded in Palestine – and, since September, in Lebanon. Israel has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, including more than 16,000 children, and more than 2,300 Lebanese, including more than 120 children.

For Palestinian and Lebanese students, the pain is acute. We have watched our homelands destroyed, our people slaughtered, tortured and starved. Yet, as we, along with many allies, have tried to process this trauma and advocate for human rights, we have been vilified and silenced on campus. Our existence has been reduced to a problem, our grief weaponised, our calls for justice criminalised.

The same cannot be said about students who have actively advocated for Israel’s “right to self-defence” – a right that Israel does not have when it comes to resistance from a population it is occupying.

The effect of this “unbalanced” approach is that today Muslim and Arab students face increased harassment and discrimination, and their attackers are only emboldened because they know there will be no consequences for what they do.

The university’s hypocrisy became apparent to me and other Palestinian students almost immediately after October 7, 2023. On October 9, students at the Michigan Law School used the public law-open server, an email chain that connects everyone at the law school, to describe Palestinians as “animals” and their Muslim and Arab classmates as “rejoic[ing] in mass murder” and supporting rape. This language was reported to the administration, who took no action.

As the greater Michigan student body started organising and protesting on campus, the university’s discrimination against marginalised students became even more apparent. It repeatedly sent campus police to disperse our protests and sit-ins, with students being physically assaulted, pepper-sprayed and arrested, while hijabs of female students were ripped off.

It also ramped up surveillance. Police presence and the number of surveillance cameras around the Arab lounge on campus noticeably increased.

The administration never issued any apology for nor condemnation of the extreme acts of police violence against students who were protesting a genocide that the university funds.

It also did not act as accusations of anti-Semitism started being weaponised against us. It did not step in to differentiate between hatred against the Jewish people and the legitimate criticism and denunciation of genocidal Israel. It did not protect our right to protest and freedom of expression. Instead, it seemingly accepted the false equivalence of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

Over the summer, the Department of Education released a report about the supposed “failure” of the university to act on accusations of anti-Semitism. Among them were claims that anti-genocide protests created a “hostile environment” which the university did not investigate.

The university easily succumbed to pressure and unilaterally changed campus policies to facilitate its crackdown on students engaging in pro-Palestinian activism. It did not consult faculty or the student body about them.

The university administration has gone out of its way to address the sentiments of Jewish students on campus but has yet to utter one word to us, the Palestinians. One has to wonder how many more Palestinians have to be exterminated before Ono and the rest of the university leadership recognise our suffering, or if they even see us as human at all?

Muslim, Arab and Palestinian students increasingly feel that our administration is fully comfortable with our people being slaughtered and our land being carpet-bombed.

This attitude isn’t unique to the University of Michigan. Nationwide, more than 3,000 people have been arrested for pro-Palestine advocacy on college campuses in just six months. Universities that once championed free speech have become hostile environments for Muslim and Arab students and their allies.

The chilling effect this has had is palpable. Many Muslim and Arab students now feel unsafe expressing their identities or views, fearing academic, legal and job prospect repercussions. For Palestinian students, this silencing is particularly traumatic – we are denied the right to mourn publicly or call for justice.

Adding to our pain is the fact that our tuition dollars are invested in companies supporting violence against Muslims and Palestinians abroad. Despite protests, the University of Michigan maintains investments in companies linked to Israel, even though it was quick to divest from companies linked to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

In response to the leaked audio, the Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan Chapter (CAIR-MI) filed a complaint with the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights. The complaint calls for an investigation into whether the University of Michigan has followed “its obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act as well as its obligations under a Consent Resolution the University entered into with the Office of Civil Rights in June of this year”.

However, given that the pressure on universities to focus on the wellbeing of Jewish students comes from the federal government itself, it is doubtful this complaint will yield any significant results.

Ono’s leaked comments reveal a broader abdication of moral leadership by university administrators nationwide. By yielding to external pressures, they fail to protect all students equally, sending a clear message that some lives matter more than others.

PTI will not vote on tweaks without Imran’s approval

Ikram Junaidi

October 20, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has made it clear that it would not vote on the proposed constitutional amendment without the express approval of its founding chairman, Imran Khan, a position the party has also conveyed to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who has been playing a key mediating role over the issue.

The party’s stance was announced by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan during a press conference held at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House on Saturday. He was speaking to the media after meeting the PTI founder in jail for the first time in over two weeks.

“For the first time since Oct 3, we had a 45-minute meeting with the founding chairman in Adiala Jail. He was unaware of the developments regarding the constitutional amendment. He also condemned the arrest of his sisters,” Mr Gohar stated.

He said that former prime minister Imran Khan praised Maulana Fazl for standing firm on his stance over the proposed constitutional amendment and for his efforts to ensure that the amendment draft is acceptable to all political parties.

Adiala jail admin, PTI disagree on facilities provided to Imran

Aamir Yasin

October 20, 2024

ISLAMABAD: As the PTI interim chairman complained about the conditions party founder Imran Khan had to endure in Adiala jail, the prison administration on Saturday clarified that the former prime minister was enjoying all the facilities available under ‘B Class’ and as per the jail manual.

In a press conference after a meeting with the PTI founder, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan claimed that Imran Khan was not being provided facilities in jail and power to his cell had remained disconnected for the past five days. He alleged that the electricity remained disconnected in Imran Khan’s cell for five days and he had not exercised for the last two weeks.

“After October 3, we had a meeting with the founding chairman in Adiala Jail for 45 minutes. The good thing is that Mr Khan was looking in good health. However, for the first time in his life, the founding chairman shared the situation of his cell in Adiala Jail. He told us that there was no electricity in his cell for five days and he has not done exercise for the last two weeks.”

According to Barrister Gohar, “He informed us that he had been deprived of television for the last two weeks and was unaware of any development regarding the constitutional amendment. He (Imran) also criticised the arrest of his sisters,” he said.

Four killed as two TTP groups clash in South Waziristan

Ghulam MursalinMarwat

October 20, 2024

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN/LAKKI MARWAT: Four militants, including a local commander, were killed in a fierce exchange of fire between two factions of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in South Waziristan district on Saturday, sources said.

The deceased militants included commander Niaz Wazir, alias Umar, and three of his associates. According to the sources, the conflict erupted when commander Minhaj Butt, who recently entered Pakistan from Afghanistan, ordered Fazal Sirki Khel Wazir to eliminate Niaz Wazir, who belonged to the Ada Khel tribe and commanded operations in Lower South Waziristan. Butt’s motive for the attack remains unclear.

According to the sources, the clash occurred between the Nandron and Nargasai mountain areas of tehsil Birmal, a region that has seen a significant uptick in militant activity over the past year, including attacks on security forces, police posts, and civilians.

Local political leaders expressed concern over the escalating violence, which has resulted in numerous fatalities. The TTP factions operating in the hilly areas near the Pakistan-Afghan border continue to threaten peace and stability in the region.

SHC orders end to ‘political interference’ in police dept

Ishaq Tanoli

October 20, 2024

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has ordered the chief secretary to ensure that no “political interference” takes place in the police department at any cost.

The SHC also noted that the provincial police lacked specific rules for transfers and postings of SHOs and ordered that a three-member committee, to be headed by the chief secretary, to draft such rules and get the same approved in two weeks.

A two-judge bench comprising Justice Salahuddin Panhwar and Justice Adnan-Ul-Karim Memon further said that the inspector general of Sindh police must exercise such powers within the framework of relevant law and rules as well as to create a pool of eligible officers for posting as SHOs.

The bench was hearing a petition filed in August about alleged abduction/disappearance of a man and during previous hearing, it had taken exception over the posting of additional SHOs and summoned the secretary home department and a senior police officer along with policy and criterion to issue such posting orders as well as to explain whether sub-inspectors can be posted as SHOs.

At the outset of the hearing, DIG-East Ghulam Azfar Mahessar along with other senior officers turned up and submitted that sub-inspectors can be posted as SHOs under the Police Rules 1934.

Mufti Salman Azhari walks free after 8-month detention as Supreme Court overturns PASA charges

by Muslim Mirror

October 20, 2024

Mufti Muhammad Salman Azhari, a former preacher and imam, was released from jail on Saturday after the Supreme Court lifted the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) Act against him. This follows eight months of detention. His brother, Mufti Zubair Misbahi, confirmed that Salman has returned to his hometown of Karna.

The Supreme Court ordered his immediate release after criticizing the police. Justices Vikram Nath and Prasanna B Varale found no evidence that Azhari’s speeches disturbed public order. They set aside the Gujarat High Court’s earlier decision that had upheld his detention, stating, “Having gone through the material on record, we find that the order of detention cannot be sustained as there is nothing to suggest that the speeches delivered by the appellant are in any manner disturbing the public order.”

Azhari was detained on February 22, 2024, in Vadodara Central Jail after being accused of delivering a provocative speech at a gathering in Junagadh. He had been arrested by a special team of the Gujarat Police on February 4 while in Mumbai. After the court’s ruling, Azhari expressed relief at being reunited with his family.

Israel Drops Leaflets Over Gaza Showing Yahya Sinwar's Body And Message To Hamas

Oct 19, 2024

Israeli planes dropped leaflets over southern Gaza on Saturday showing a picture of the dead Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar with the message that "Hamas will no longer rule Gaza", echoing language used by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The move came as Israeli military strikes killed at least 35 people across the Gaza Strip and its forces tightened a siege around hospitals in Jabalia in the north of the enclave, Palestinian health officials said.

"Whoever drops the weapon and hands over the hostages will be allowed to leave and live in peace," the leaflet, written in Arabic, read, according to residents of the southern city of Khan Younis and images circulating online.

The leaflet's wording was from a statement by Netanyahu on Thursday after Sinwar was killed by Israeli soldiers operating in Rafah, in the south near the Egyptian border, on Wednesday.

The October 7 attack Sinwar planned on Israeli communities a year ago killed around 1,200 people, with another 253 dragged back to Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel's subsequent war has devastated Gaza, killing more than 42,500 Palestinians, with another 10,000 uncounted dead thought to lie under the rubble, Gaza health authorities say.

Keen to avoid all-out war after attacking Israel, Iran tries both diplomacy and threats

19 October 2024

TEHRAN, Iran — Awaiting Israel’s promised retaliation for a massive missile attack earlier this month, Iran has balanced threats of a fierce response to any Israeli attack with diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation into all-out regional war.

Iran launched 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1, saying it was a response to an Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps General Abbas Nilforoushan in Beirut late last month. It also said it was in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July, an attack widely blamed on Israel.

Israel has vowed to respond to the direct missile barrage from Iran, the second Tehran has launched against it this year, with a “deadly, precise and surprising,” attack, according to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, leading Iran to warn that it would in turn hit back if struck.

“If you make a mistake and attack our targets, whether in the region or in Iran, we will strike you again painfully,” IRGC chief Hossein Salami said on Thursday.

Benjamin Netanyahu warns Iran after drones from Lebanon target Israeli PM's residence: ‘Grave mistake’

Oct 20, 2024

The Israeli military reported that a drone from Lebanon crossed into Israel and struck Caesarea. Local media said the drone was targeting Netanyahu's residence.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday claimed that Iranian-backed groups tried to assassinate him and his wife, after his office said that a drone targeted his residence.

“The attempt by Iran’s proxy Hezbollah to assassinate me and my wife today was a grave mistake. This will not deter me or the State of Israel from continuing our just war against our enemies in order to secure our future,” Netanyahu posted on X.

“I say to Iran and its proxies in its axis of evil: Anyone who tries to harm Israel’s citizens will pay a heavy price. We will continue to eliminate the terrorists and those who dispatch them. We will bring our hostages home from Gaza. And we will return our citizens who live on our Northern border safely to their homes,” the Israeli premier said.

At least 73 killed in Israeli strike in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya

20 Oct 2024

An Israeli air attack has killed at least 73 Palestinians, including women and children, in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, the authorities said, describing it as a “massacre”.

The overnight strike hit several houses and a multistorey residential building, known as the Beit Lahiya Project, the Gaza Government Media Office said, as many people remained trapped under the rubble on Sunday.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by a communications blackout and road obstructions in the north of the enclave, where a 16-day Israeli military siege has cut off access to food, water, medicine and essential services for residents.

Beit Lahiya is a city located in the far north of the Gaza Strip close to Jabalia and Beit Hanoon. All three cities are severely affected by the Israeli offensive that has also resulted in severed phone and internet access.

Fulani children now wayward due to lack of Western, Islamic education – Yobe Speaker

October 20, 2024

By Shehu Usman

A joint Fulani socio-cultural group under the Fulbe Development and Cultural Organisation (FUDECO) has tasked Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State with creating a Ministry of Livestock Development.

The Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, BubaChiroma-Mashio, and the Chairman of FUDECO in the state, Aliyu Usman Jejere, jointly issued this charge at an event to celebrate, for the first time, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in Damaturu, the state capital.

Chiroma-Mashio, who represented Governor Mai Mala Buni, explained that the lack of Western and Islamic education has forced Fulani children to become wayward, which is unethical to the culture and practices of the Fulani people.

“Lack of adequate grazing reserves, encroachment on farmlands, and the obstruction of cattle routes have resulted in clashes between farmers and herders. This is one more reason why the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni embarked on the construction of the Nazari grazing reserve in the Jakusko local government area and another in the Fika local government area of the state.

Rivers State: PDP Grapples With Uncertainty Over Loss Of LG Structure

By Rachel Okporu

20 October 2024

Rivers State has continued to be in the eyes of the storm over the political crisis between Governor SiminalayiFubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), NyesomWike.

Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, have been at odds since last year, with their conflict reportedly centred on control over state resources and political structure.

Multiple interventions from the chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and stakeholders in the state, including President Bola Tinubu, have failed to reconcile them.

Despite a recommendation from the PDP Governors’ Forum that the leadership structure in Rivers is returned to Fubara, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, sympathetic to Wike, has recognised Wike’s loyalists as the legitimate state executive committee members.

The local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), triggered more crises in the state.

Despite the court judgement barring the security agencies from participating in the election, Fubara insisted that the election would go as scheduled.

To counter China, India eyes critical minerals pact with US

Oct 20, 2024

NEW DELHI: In their bid to counter China's dominance, India and the US are seeking to bolster their partnership on critical minerals by jointly tapping third countries to secure their supply chains, with New Delhi keen to ramp up the engagement through a pact in the crucial sphere as a precursor to a free trade agreement in the future.

"We have signed an MoU, which will be operationalised by the mines ministry. The idea is to secure our supply chains... I have suggested that the critical mineral MoU be converted to a critical mineral partnership agreement and become a starting point for an FTA," commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal told reporters Saturday. The US govt, at present, is not pursuing trade agreements with any country.

India, along with the US, Australia and Japan are working to secure the critical minerals supply chain, ranging from mining to processing and final use as they seek to catch up with China that controls most of the mines and production facilities. Japan and the US had signed a partnership agreement, which will entitle non-American companies to get advantages, including duty benefits.

Trump receives appreciation certificate from Muslim majority city’s Mayor after 'historic' visit

Oct 19, 2024

Former President Donald Trump was honoured during his visit to Hamtramck, Michigan, on Friday when the city’s Mayor, Amer Ghalib, presented him with a certificate of appreciation.

The gesture came after Ghalib, the city’s first Muslim mayor, endorsed Trump, marking a notable moment in the former president’s campaign to court Michigan’s Arab-American voters ahead of the 2024 election.

In a separate event in Wisconsin, Harris was confronted by a protester during a closed-door meeting with students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A video shared by a pro-Palestinian student group captured the moment a protester interrupted her, asking, “And in genocide, right? Billions of dollars in genocide?”

Ghalib, who was born in Yemen and became Hamtramck’s mayor in 2021, praised Trump during the brief ceremony, calling the visit “historic” for the Muslim-majority city.

ASU Professor Kicked Out of Australia Over Islamic Rally Remarks

October 19, 2024

An Arizona State University professor was kicked out of Australia over his remarks at a rally outside a Sydney mosque held on the one-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.

ASU law professor and Muslim influencer Khaled Beydoun told a crowd of about 300 people that the anniversary of the terrorist attack was a “good day” worthy of celebration, prompting Australian officials to revoke his visa.

“[This is] not fully a day of mourning, today is also a day that marks considerable celebration, considerable progress, and considerable privilege,” said Beydoun. “I want to talk about some good things because it’s a good day, and we’ve got to mark some of the good news that comes about that we oftentimes neglect.”

Over 1,200 civilians — men, women, and children, including several dozen Americans — were killed in the Hamas surprise attack last year.

“The university is aware of the professor’s remarks and is respectful of the First Amendment privileges associated with academic freedom and free speech,” said the spokesperson. “In this instance, regarding a topic that is emotionally charged and extremely sensitive, we believe the Australian media source and subsequent online comments misquote the professor and take his comments out of context.”

The university also said that Beydoun was too valuable as a constitutional law expert to dismiss. ASU also said that Beydoun’s remarks were constitutionally-protected speech.

Bangladesh’s next general election likely be held in 2025, says interim government advisor

By: VaidehiJahagirdar

October 19, 2024

Bangladesh's next general election is expected to take place in 2025, said to Dr. Asif Nazrul, an advisor to the interim government. In a statement released on Saturday, Nazrul stated that elections could occur within the next year, but several factors are in the path that would influence the timeline.

"Elections may be possible next year, but many elements must be addressed first," Nazrul stated. "Political reforms and compromises are needed, along with the formation of a search committee, the establishment of an election commission, and the completion of the voter list. If these criteria are met, the election could be held in 2025," he added.

Signfificantly, Nazrul also asserted that this prediction was his initial assessment, but the final decision over the same rests with the chief adviser to the government. "Elections are a critical policy decision, and the timing will be determined by the chief adviser. He alone holds the authority to announce the election date," he stated.

Post-revolution Bangladesh protests cost garment industry $400 million

Oct 20, 2024,

Dhaka: Bangladesh's vital garment industry lost $400 million due to unrest following the student-led revolution that ousted the country's autocratic premier, industry leaders said Sunday, insisting the situation was now "stable".

An interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus took over, but protests in a string of garment factories continued with workers demanding jobs and better pay.

Such demonstrations sometimes spiralled into violence. On September 30, a garment worker was killed and 20 were injured in clashes between protesters and the police.

Kalpana Akhtar, president of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, said Sunday that there had to be "a drastic change in the attitude" of factory owners and the government.

Saudi stray animals find unlikely homes in far-flung Philippines

Marco Ferrari

October 19, 2024

RIYADH: Stray cats and dogs in Saudi Arabia are finding unlikely homes more than 8,000 km away in the Philippines thanks to a network of dedicated volunteers.

The sizable number of Filipino expatriates in the Kingdom are using their connections back home, aided by social media, to find suitable adopters in the Asian archipelago.

Physical therapist Virginia Alindayo is one such expatriate. She spoke to Arab News about how she has found homes for more than 50 cats and dogs, often transporting them to the Philippines herself.

“It makes me happy. It’s the only life that I want to live, as of now,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to do something like this, and it really makes me happy.”

Alindayo lives in the remote town of Rafha, a nine-hour drive from capital, Riyadh. Her dedication to animal welfare is so devout that she once took 12 cats from Rafha to Riyadh, before boarding a flight with them to the Philippines.

Another time, she managed to find homes for another 12 cats in the US. She again flew them across the world herself. “It was very easy,” she said.

Alindayo first started her rehoming campaign in 2020 after her own pet cat went missing. In trying to find the cat, she came across several animal welfare groups on Facebook, including Aramina’s Pet Travel, Pawssionate Pet Lovers and Mission Pawsible.

Zahid: BN must prioritise unity over petty disputes to gain more seats in GE16

20 Oct 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — BarisanNasional (BN) has the potential to secure more seats in the 16th General Election (GE16) if the coalition can set aside trivial and petty issues, its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Ahmad Zahid, who is Deputy Prime Minister, said achieving this success hinges on the coalition’s ability to bolster its spirit and resolve any internal disputes among its component parties.

“If BN puts in the effort and organises an effective election strategy, while also addressing our internal challenges, BN can still achieve a remarkable victory, even in opposition-held states, if we maintain this focus,” he said.

“If the leaders of the component parties can also set aside their differences, I am confident that BN will secure more seats in the upcoming GE,” he said in his opening speech at MCA’s 71st annual general assembly here today. Also present were MCA president Datuk Seri Wee KaSiong, BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.

Rafizi: Biggest budget allocation due to good governance, fiscal discipline

20 Oct 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — The largest allocation in history of RM421 billion for Budget 2025 is the result of good governance, prudent fiscal discipline and the country’s rapid economic growth, said Economy Minister RafiziRamli.

Rafizi said these factors allow the government to spend more, but still remain on the responsible fiscal target that has been set as well as the commitment to continue reducing the national debt.

“So the annual debt would go from RM100 billion in 2022, down to RM95 billion, RM90 billion, RM85 billion and next year RM80 billion.

“Because from the fiscal point of view, we need to reduce the new annual debt for us to reach around 60 per cent of debt to GDP (gross domestic product) by 2028,” he told reporters after officiating at the National Statistics Day celebration and the pre-launch of the Department of Statistics of Malaysia website here today. Also present was chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr MohdUzirMahidin.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presented Budget 2025 with an allocation of RM421 billion, covering RM335 billion for operating expenses and RM86 billion for development.

G7 defence ministers concerned by attacks on peacekeepers, vow Kyiv support

Oct 20, 2024

NAPLES: G7 defence ministers on Saturday met against the backdrop of multiple ongoing military conflicts, expressing concern over escalation in Lebanon while pledging "unwavering support" for Ukraine.

Italy, holding the rotating presidency of the Group of Seven countries, organised the body's first ministerial meeting dedicated to defence, staged in the southern city of Naples that is home to a Nato base.

"We underscore our intent to continue to provide assistance to Ukraine, including military assistance in the short and long term," read the G7 defence ministers' final statement that pledged "unwavering support".

But the G7 defence ministers -- from Italy, France, Germany, Britain, Japan, Canada and the United States -- also warned of the dangers of further intensification in the Middle East, including in Lebanon where the United Nations has blamed Israel for strikes on UN peacekeepers.

Fresh trouble for Harry Meghan? Locals of Portugal's Comporta don't want Royals to settle there

Oct 20, 2024

When Prince Harry and Meghan shifted to California leaving their royal duties, they were not very welcome there. Four years down the line, their Montecito neighbors are not very happy about the royals settling at their place. A similar situation is brewing for Harry and Meghan as they are purchasing a house in Comporta, Portugal. The residents are expressing frustration that the coastline is now becoming exclusive to wealthy property owners.

UK Express reported that restricting access to public beaches was illegal in Portugal until recently but new regulations now allow local councils and government agencies to designate certain beaches as "private".

"Worst thing to happen to the Portuguese coast, typical greed situation. Taking land and property from locals who have been enjoying it for years," one wrote.
