Uttar Pradesh: Mosque Imam fined Rs 2 lakh for using loudspeaker for call to prayer

December 14, 2024

Days after police violence over surveying of a Mughal-era mosque at Sambhal which killed at least six people, an imam of another mosque in the Uttar Pradesh village was fined Rs 2 lakh for allegedly using a loudspeaker at high volume on Friday.

The incident took place in the Anar Wali Masjid in the Kot Garvi area.

“The loudspeaker was being used at high volume in the mosque, prompting action in the case. The imam, identified as 23-year-old Tahzeeb, was fined Rs 2 lakh as a precautionary measure and has been granted bail,” Sambhal Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vandana Mishra said to PTI news agency.

The imam has also been directed to refrain from similar conduct for the next six months, according to an order passed by the SDM.

‘Our Children Are Brave Servants Of Allah’, Read Delhi Schools' Bomb Threat Email, Signed Under The Name Of Barry Allah

Dec 14, 2024

------------

Day after 30 schools in the national capital received bomb threats, several schools in Delhi were once again sent similar threats via email on Saturday, police said.

These schools included Delhi Public School, RK Puram, and Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj.

Police said that a search operation was underway, adding that nothing suspicious had been found from the school premises yet.

The group email to these schools was sent from childrenofallah@outlook.com and signed under the name of Barry Allah, ANI reported.

What did the threat email say?

"Allah sees your efforts to resist his punishment. But they are futile. For no mortal being can escape the judgement of Allah," the bomb threat email read.

It said that the Prophet Muhammad declares anyone who goes against Allah as "enemies" of the world. "We see your attempt to stop us. It will not work. The Prophet Muhammad has allowed the children to burn in the sacred flame of Allah," it added.

The email further said that the school buildings will be brought down when students might not be present there on Saturday. "Our bomb vests are blessed by the Prophet Muhammad. They shall not fail their goal. Our children are brave servants of Allah. They shall complete their task," it added.

In connection with the 30 threats on Friday, East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ravi Kumar Singh said that investigations into the fake threats revealed that the emails were sent to the schools from outside the country.

The threatening emails have raised concerns among parents and school staff, with police assuring them that thorough probe are ongoing and safety remains their top priority.

Previous threat email

Earlier on Monday, more than 44 schools were targeted by hoax bomb threats as email from scottielanza@gmail.com was sent to these schools.

While Friday's bomb threat email did not demand anything, Monday's email had demanded $30,000.

"I planted multiple bombs inside the building. The bombs are small and hidden very well. It will not cause very much damage to the building, but many people will be injured when the bombs detonate," the email had read.

It further added, "You all deserve to suffer and lose limbs. If I do not receive 30,000 dollar. The group =E2=80=9CKNR=E2=80=9D is behind this attack."

Notably, parents have expressed discontent over the rising instances of such bomb threats, saying that they are having to often check their phones for updates about the same.

Lebanon has ‘reached the brink of collapse’ despite ceasefire, UN report warns

--------------

BEIRUT: The Lebanese army command said its units were being deployed in the border village of Khiam on Friday after entering it on Thursday as a new UN report warned that Lebanon had “reached the brink of collapse” despite the signing of a ceasefire agreement last month to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia also urged a reassessment of priorities, emphasizing that care is a fundamental element in achieving social stability and economic recovery.

In a study titled “Restoring Care, Rebuilding Communities: Path to Recovery for Lebanon,” ESCWA highlighted that the effects of the conflict extended beyond immediate humanitarian needs, affecting health, education, and social infrastructure.

On Friday, Lebanese army units began clearing the main road from the north of the town to the south, connecting Khiam to Marjayoun, by removing rubble and potential explosives left by the Israelis.

The army command said the deployment of its military units was taking place in coordination with the five-member committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire agreement.

Israel completed the withdrawal of its forces from Khiam on Thursday morning.

The Lebanese army command warned “citizens not to approach the area and abide by the instructions of the military units until the completion of the deployment.”

A Lebanese resident who was killed on Thursday when Israeli forces raided Khiam Square a few hours following the Lebanese army’s entry to the area has been identified as Mustafa Awada. Several people were injured in the Israeli assault.

Awada had just broadcast a live video from his phone when an Israeli attack drone killed him and injured many others who were with him in Khiam Square.

The Lebanese army retrieved Awada’s body and transported it to the Marjayoun Governmental Hospital on Friday.

The Israeli army continued its hostilities in the invaded southern area, raiding the coastal town of Naqoura on Friday morning.

An Israeli drone also raided the Tebna area near Baisariyeh.

The Israeli army renewed its warnings to residents of southern Lebanon, instructing them not to move south of an area that includes 50 villages, the houses and infrastructure of which have been almost destroyed.

Lebanon’s southern border with Israel extends 120 km from the west of Naqoura to the east of Shebaa, constituting an area of 30,575 hectares.

There are 30 towns and villages on the borderline, comprising an estimated 32,000 homes.

Some 170,000 people reside in these towns, including around 90,000 permanent residents, who are still displaced.

Official statistics indicate that 70 percent of people in the area Israeli forces invaded are Shiites, while the remaining residents include Sunni Muslims, Druze, and Christians.

Israeli troops are set to withdraw from the area within 60 days since the ceasefire agreement came into force.

Under the ceasefire agreement, the Lebanese army is supposed to deploy 6,000 soldiers south of the Litani River to work in coordination with UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL to extend state authority and withdraw unauthorized weapons from the area.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee claimed on Friday in a social media post that Brigade 769 forces discovered and destroyed “Kornet missiles and an anti-tank missile launcher” in southern Lebanon.

Adraee claimed that the forces discovered numerous combat tools, including rocket launchers and Kornet missiles camouflaged in rugged and mountainous areas, in addition to Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition magazines, and other military equipment.

They also found an anti-tank rocket launcher that Hezbollah operatives had used to fire at towns in the Galilee panhandle area over the past year, which was subsequently confiscated.

Adraee said Israeli forces also “discovered a weapons depot containing RPG shells and mortar rounds, all of which were confiscated.”

The troops were conducting field operations to “neutralize threats,” he added.

Also on Friday, explosions were heard in the mountain range and villages of Baalbek-Hermel, in eastern Lebanon.

It was confirmed that these explosions originated from firing ranges located east of Baalbek, where the Lebanese army was detonating missiles left over from the recent Israeli aggression.

The Masnaa border crossing between Lebanon and Syria continued to witness heavy traffic for the sixth consecutive day, with families fleeing Syrian territory following the fall of the Assad regime.

The Lebanese General Security prevents the entry of those who do not meet specific conditions while facilitating the passage of Syrian refugees in Lebanon returning to their homeland.

Several Lebanese truck owners, stranded in Daraa, Syria, appealed to Lebanese authorities to urgently intervene to facilitate the passage of their vehicles to Lebanon through the Masnaa border crossing.

The truck owners said in their plea that their number is estimated at 70 trucks loaded with cheese and food products destined for Lebanese markets.

They said that delays in procedures and increasing restrictions at the border left the trucks stranded on Syrian land for several days.

The Lebanese army on Friday launched an investigation into a road accident involving 30 Syrian nationals who sustained injuries when the passenger bus they were traveling in overturned and collided with a curb in Akkar, in the far north of Lebanon.

It was revealed that those travelers had entered Lebanon clandestinely through an illegal border crossing along the Nahr Al-Kabir river between Syria and Lebanon.

The bus driver, a Lebanese national, was among 11 injured people who needed to be hospitalized. Some passengers were in critical condition.

In other developments, Wafiq Safa, Hezbollah’s head of liaison and coordination unit, has assured that the movement would support the Lebanese army’s mission as outlined in the ceasefire agreement to the greatest extent possible.

The assurance came at a recent meeting between Army Commander Gen. Joseph Aoun and Safa, the Central News Agency, known as Al-Markazia, reported on Friday.

The parliament speaker’s adviser, Ahmed Baalbaki, was also present.

Safa previously survived airstrikes targeting him in Beirut in October.

26th Amendment: Justice Shah expresses concern over potential 'political appointments' in judiciary

By Arfa Feroz Zake

December 13, 2024

Supreme Court judge, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah. — SC website

---------

Supreme Court's senior puisne judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah has expressed concerns over the "potential political appointments" in judiciary in light of the recently-enacted 26th Amendment, saying that it has granted majority to the executive in the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).

"The judiciary has enjoyed primacy in the appointment process of the judges in Pakistan, however, this vital balance has been fundamentally disturbed under the amendment, which now grants a majority to the executive in the commission," he said in a letter to Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail — who heads the five-member committee designated to draft the rules.

Last week, Justice Shah — in a letter to the chief justice — sought the postponement of the JCP meeting, as numerous petitions challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment were still pending before the apex court. However, CJP Yahya Afridi made it clear that the commission did not have the scope to discuss the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

In his letter today, the senior puisne judge cited Clause (4) of Article 175A of the Constitution, which mandates the Commission to make its rules of procedure, "including the procedure and criteria for assessment, evaluation and fitness for appointment of Judges".

"In the absence of such rules, any proceedings undertaken by the Commission for the appointment of Judges would be unconstitutional," he maintained.

Justice Shah noted that the "unprecedented shift" in the composition of the JCP poses grave risks, including the potential for "political appointments and the packing of courts with judges lacking an ideological commitment to the rule of law."

"Any appointments made without a well-defined and transparent framework of rules will undermine public confidence in the judiciary, compromise its independence, and erode its ability to function as a neutral arbiter of justice," reads the letter.

He emphasised that the selection and appointment of judges must be "structured and well-reasoned and never be left vulnerable to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions".

In these circumstances, the judge said, it becomes imperative that well-thought-out rules are framed that provide the necessary filters to select the best of the best, thereby safeguarding judicial independence and ensuring merit-based selections.

He also expressed regret that Pakistan’s judiciary was passing through one of its weakest moments in history, and the risks of executive overreach were higher than ever.

"The absence of robust rules and criteria will allow outside influence to undermine the judiciary by facilitating appointments that serve partisan interests rather than upholding constitutional values," he added.

Therefore, the judge said, it is critical that no appointment to the constitutional courts proceeds until these rules are finalised and adopted by the JCP. "Any hurriedness in the matter by the JCP can seriously undermine and weaken the judiciary for years to come."

Sambhal admin launches drive against encroachment, power theft near Jama Masjid

December 14, 2024

Weeks after four people died in a violence over a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in this Uttar Pradesh district, the administration has launched a campaign to tackle encroachments and power theft in areas around the Mughal-era mosque.

“The comprehensive drive aims to revitalise the area and crack down on illegal power connections,” district officials said on Saturday.

Sambhal and the perils of judicial evasion

District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya confirmed that the administration was taking steps to address encroachments around the historical mosque.

Violence erupted during the November 24 survey as protesters gathered near the mosque and clashed with security personnel, leading to stone pelting and arson. Four people died and several others were injured in the clashes. The police have denied allegations that it fired at the protesters.

"We are marking the area as it is in the documents and ensuring it is cleaned up. There is a well nearby, which we are in the process of reviving," Mr. Pensiya said.

Encroachments along drains, particularly in areas around the mosque, have been an ongoing concern. The district administration launched a dedicated encroachment removal campaign in the Chandausi city on Friday and is expanding it to other parts of Sambhal.

"The campaign will continue for two to three months and all encroachments will be cleared,", Mr. Pensiya said.

He clarified that a thorough assessment of the situation would be carried out after the cleanup around the Shahi Jama Masjid.

The senior official said the authorities discovered widespread electricity theft during a surprise inspection at several local mosques and residential areas.

"We conducted a check on loudspeakers at religious sites on Saturday and uncovered illegal electricity connections in around 250 to 300 houses, mosques and madrasas," he told reporters.

The district authorities uncovered a case in which 150 to 200 houses were drawing power from a single distribution unit. "An entire roof has been converted into an illegal power distribution unit," Pensiya said and added that an FIR would be filed against those responsible.

Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said the authorities were checking the use of loudspeakers at temples, mosques and other religious sites.

Saturday's crackdown targeted locations with suspected illegal power connections within the Nakhasa police station jurisdiction.

Understanding the Sambhal violence that led to five deaths | In Focus podcast

"We have uncovered significant power theft in these areas, with electricity being supplied through illegal connections to entire neighbourhoods," Mr. Bishnoi said. "In some cases, the electricity is being provided from makeshift power connections atop a mosque minaret." The police are identifying all those involved and profiting from these illegal connections.

"Action will be taken under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act if any material benefits are being collected using unlawful means," Bishnoi said.

With cases already being registered with the electricity department, the drive is expected to continue for several days, sources said.

District officials also announced plans to make Sambhal "100 per cent electricity theft-free".

The goal is part of the district administration's broader commitment to improving infrastructure and cracking down on illegal activities.

As part of the drive, a mosque imam was fined Rs 2 lakh for allegedly using a loudspeaker at high volume on Friday.

BJP minority member in UP's Amroha expelled from party for alleged 'love jihad', arrested

Dec 14, 2024

Amroha (UP): The BJP has expelled Tabish Asgar, a member of its Amroha's minority front, for indulging in alleged 'love jihad'. The party also expelled five other members, citing criminal tendencies and fraudulent membership.

Amroha district BJP president Uday Giri Goswami announced their expulsion in a formal letter, stating that such individuals have no connection with the party and have been removed due to their alleged activities.

According to the letter, Asgar was accused of trapping a young woman from Shahjahanpur by concealing his identity and religion. He allegedly married the woman, forced her to undergo an abortion and later revealed his real identity.

The victim filed a complaint against Asgar at Noida's Sector 113 police station under sections related to "love jihad" and other offences.

Following the FIR, police arrested Asgar and sent him to jail, according to party officials.

Subsequently, the BJP leadership expelled him and five others on Friday, alleging they joined the party through fraudulent means.

"These individuals with criminal tendencies have nothing to do with the party. If they became members through deception, they have now been removed," Goswami said.

The expelled members are Tabish Asgar, Ali Raza Bablu, Waseem Parvez, Ghulam Askari Bhutu, Nisar Haider and Kashif Rauni, the letter stated.

J&K CM Omar Abdullah warns against unilateral decision on ‘one nation, one election’ plan

 December 13, 2024

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday (December 13, 2024) sought a thorough discussion on the proposal for simultaneous elections, and warned against unilateral decisions on the issue.

“There is a need for a transparent and open discussion on the ‘one nation, one election’ proposal. It should not replicate the contentious process surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 (which led to the withdrawal of J&K’s special status) in 2019,” Mr. Abdullah said.

“The Bill is a Cabinet proposal and has not been not tabled in Parliament. It should not meet the same fate as the Bill related to Article 370, which was passed within one or two hours after a token discussion,” the National Conference (NC) leader said.

Mr. Abdullah called for an “open discussion” in Parliament. On the NC’s position on the Bill, Mr. Abdullah said his party would sit and form an opinion. “Accordingly, our members of Parliament will vote,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abdullah said the rules of business, yet to be finalised for the elected government of the Union Territory (UT), were likely to be completed by the end of December or early January. “Work is under way to get some clarity in framing business rules,” he said.

Pak activities dips to zero after deploying anti-drone system along Jammu border: BSF official

 December 13, 2024

Drone activities from Pakistan has dropped to almost zero after the deployment of an anti-drone system along the Jammu border, a senior BSF officer said on Friday, asserting that the Indian forces are much ahead over its adversary as far as technological upgradation is concerned.

Inspector General of Border Security Force (BSF), Jammu frontier, D K Boora, said India is not the same when the country had old-fashioned weapons. It evolved to adopt new technology and advanced weapons, he added.

Besides the heavy deployment of manpower, the technical surveillance is present on the entire border across Jammu region and it is being further expanded to other places in the country, he said.

Talking to reporters in connection with the 60th Raising Day celebrations of the force and to highlight the achievements registered by his troops in Jammu this year, Boora said the sector has a sensitive border which is being monitored round-the-clock by boots-on-ground (manpower) and technological advancement with focus to ensure no infiltration from across the border.

“The (drone) activities from across the border have come down and the exact reason for it is known to them (Pakistan) only. However, since we have upgraded our (anti-drone) systems on the borders, this problem (drone incursions) has dropped to almost zero in Jammu which proves that our technology is successful,” the BSF officer said.

He said technology is evolving in every field all across the world.

“It is obvious that the terror groups will use it and so our agencies like police, Army and BSF will try it as well. So this is a general process that the type of technology that is available, it is available for everyone and everyone uses it. And the technology that is available, its counter is also available at the same time,” the BSF officer said, referring to drone and counter-drone gadgets.

He said if there is any upgradation of technology in Pakistan, the Indian forces are also getting a new version. In fact, India is ahead of its opponents, he added.

“It happens everywhere… there is no need to worry about it because this upgrade is a normal process. If any new thing is available, then it is available for us too. So we use it.

“And I assure you that our government and the forces do not leave any such shortage in upgradation that we are left behind of those who work against us,” Boora said, responding to a question on the steps taken to counter terrorists using advanced weapons.

He said the Jammu border comes under the most sensitive border in the country and “our soldiers and officers do a very difficult duty here”.

“And in doing this work, the BSF has also achieved great success. For this, I would like to congratulate all the people working under my command,” Boora said.

Asked about the threat posed by the use of US-made M4 carbines by terrorists, the senior police officer said there is no specific threat as all weapons are the same.

“There is hype about the foreign-made carbine even though it does not do anything different. It has the same system as other weapons… magazines, bullets and a trigger.

“Today, India is not the same as it was when we had old-fashioned weapons. Now we have new technology, new India-made weapons which are very good,” he said.

About the new technology and weapons inducted by BSF in the recent past, Boora said it is not right to divulge the details in the public domain.

“I can assure you that the BSF has the latest technology and latest weapons. And whatever technology is upgraded, we immediately invest in it.

And we get full support and money from the government. So we are much ahead in that,” he said.

Akhilesh Yadav: Efforts on to make minorities, especially Muslims, 2nd-grade citizens

by Lalmani Verma

 December 14, 2024

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday alleged that efforts were being made to reduce the country’s minorities, especially Muslims, to “second-grade citizens”, and that their properties, including places of worship, were being “grabbed”.

Speaking in Lok Sabha during a debate on 75 years of the Constitution, Yadav, flagging the issues of the PDA — Pichda (backwards), Dalit (scheduled castes), and Alpasankhyak (minorities) — also said a “karo ya maro (do or die) movement was needed to save the Constitution today. The slogan marked the beginning of the Quit India Movement against the British.

In his speech, Yadav accused the government of neglecting the minorities and said, “Atrocities are increasing on them (minorities)… Their properties are being looted, they are being killed, their houses are being demolished and their places of worship are being grabbed with the help of the administration.”

Yadav highlighted how people were stopped from exercising their right to vote. Referring to the recent Assembly bypoll in the minority-dominated seat of Meerapur, UP, he said, “People across the country would have seen that photograph showing a police officer, on the direction of UP government, stopping women from casting vote and threatening them by showing a revolver.”

Drawing parallels with authoritarian regimes, Yadav said: “This system is rapidly heading towards dictatorship… Hitler, too, after getting elected by the people amended the constitution and established a dictatorship. Our government is also trying to move parallel to the same.”

Yadav also alleged that in today’s situation, freedom of expression meant “deshdroh (sedition)” and “if you are not with the BJP’s opinion and belong to another religion, you are entitled to (be) torture(d).” “And now there is a problem in worship too. Because elements searching for a temple under every mosque do not want peace in the country and they do not care about the law,” he said.

Yadav alleged the government was taking care of “only 10 per cent” of the population and that disparity had increased in the country after 2014. He said that of the country’s 140 crore population, 82 crore were still surviving on government ration while 2/3rd of the country’s total assets were occupied by a few families”.

Lucknow: Jhansi police on Friday registered an FIR against 11 named individuals, including an Imam, and 100 unidentified persons for obstructing the National Investigation Agency (NIA) team's investigation during a search operation at the residence of Mufti Khalid Nadvi on Thursday.

The NIA conducted searches at 19 locations across eight states in connection with a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror conspiracy case. As part of this operation, the NIA, along with the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), raided Nadvi's residence in Super Colony, Jhansi, around 2:30 AM on Wednesday night.

After a 30-minute wait, Khalid opened the door. The NIA and ATS teams questioned him and conducted a thorough search of his house, inspecting rooms, bookshelves, and even the kitchen. Approximately 2,000 books were found, many of which were seized. Khalid explained that he was involved in online education and participated in several international WhatsApp groups. His bank records, passport, and visa were also examined.

As the NIA team prepared to leave with Khalid in custody, a mob gathered near Fatima Masjid, protesting his detention. Despite attempts to control the situation, the crowd grew increasingly hostile. The mob engaged in a scuffle with the NIA team, obstructing govt work. Following intervention by the local police, the NIA team took Nadvi to the police lines, from where he was released later that night.

According to the FIR filed by station officer of Kotwali, Shailendra Singh, a team of police officers, including constables and officials, was involved in a special operation based on confidential intelligence regarding an investigation in the Fatima Masjid Lane of New Basti. The NIA was questioning some suspected individuals in the area. "The mob, consisting of over 100 men and women, armed with sticks, rods, and iron bars. They chanted slogans, used abusive language, and attacked police officers, pushing and assaulting them," Singh said.

During the scuffle, constable Vinod Chahar sustained head injuries. Among the suspects identified were Saqir alias Pappu, Goldy, Pervez, Zakaira, Imam Abdul Hameed, Gufran, Monish, Kamil, Tariq, Ikram, and Shabir Makrani, while others remain unidentified.

The police registered a case under the BNS sections of Section 191 (2) guilty of rioting, 191 (3) rioting, being armed with a deadly weapon, 190 unlawful assembly, 115 (2) voluntarily causing hurt, 352 provoke a breach of peace, 351 (3) criminal intimidation by threatening, 121 (1) voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty, and 132 voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty against the 110 persons. Locals reported that Khalid had lived in the area for three years and was married four years ago. His wife, also an online educator, was reportedly rarely seen in the community.

US general discusses Syria, other regional issues in Israel visit

December 14, 2024

WASHINGTON: A top US military officer visited Israel from Wednesday to Friday, meeting with Israeli defense officials and discussing the situation in Syria, among other regional topics, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

Army General Michael Kurilla, CENTCOM’s commander, met Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, along with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, CENTCOM said.

Washington has urged Israel to be in close consultation with the US over events unfolding in Syria, where days earlier Syrian rebels led by rebel leader Abu Mohammed Al-Golani brought an end to more than 50 years of rule by the Assad family, as ousted President Bashar Assad fled the country.

The world has been watching to see if Syria’s new rulers can stabilize the country in which more than a decade of civil war killed hundreds of thousands and sparked a refugee crisis.

Following the collapse of Assad’s regime, the Israeli military said its jets conducted hundreds of strikes in Syria and destroyed the bulk of its strategic weapons stockpiles.

Katz has ordered Israeli troops to prepare to stay over the winter on Mount Hermon, a strategic location overlooking Damascus, adding to signs that Israel is planning a prolonged military presence in Syria.

“The leaders discussed a range of regional security issues, to include the ongoing situation in Syria, and preparedness against other strategic and regional threats,” the CENTCOM statement said.

CENTCOM said Kurilla also visited Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon in recent days.

While Israel welcomed the removal of Assad, an ally of arch rival Iran, it is suspicious of the rebel groups that toppled him, many of which have origins linked to Islamist groups.

In Lebanon, Kurilla visited Beirut to monitor withdrawal of the first Israeli troops under a ceasefire reached last month for a war that killed thousands and displaced over a million.

Israel is separately waging a war in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, where its military assault over the last 14 months has killed tens of thousands and led to genocide and war crimes accusations that it denies.

Israel’s assault on Gaza followed an Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Palestinian Hamas militants that killed 1,200.

Jordan to host Syria talks after Damascus erupts in celebration

December 14, 2024

Damascus: Jordan will host US, EU, Turkish and Arab diplomats on Saturday for high-level talks on Syria, a day after celebrations in Damascus and nationwide rejoicing at the ouster of president Bashar Assad.

Syrians celebrated the day they called the “Friday of victory” with fireworks heralding the fall of the Assad dynasty.

More than half a century of brutal rule by his clan came to a sudden end on Sunday, after a lightning rebel offensive swept across the country and took the capital.

Assad’s fall has also led to fast-moving diplomatic developments, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken among envoys set to discuss Syria on Saturday in the Jordanian city of Aqaba.

Turkiye, meanwhile, will reopen its embassy in Damascus, closed since 2012 amid calls by Ankara for Assad to step down.

A Qatari diplomat said a delegation from the Gulf emirate would visit Syria on Sunday to meet transitional government officials and discuss aid and the reopening of their embassy.

Unlike other Arab states, Qatar never restored diplomatic ties with Assad after a rupture in 2011.

Assad has fled Syria, closing an era in which suspected dissidents were jailed or killed, and capping nearly 14 years of war that killed more than 500,000 people and displaced millions.

'Tears of joy'

Abu Mohammed Al-Jolani, head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) which spearheaded the offensive, had called on Syrians “to go to the streets to express their joy.”

Celebrations continued into the night on the first Friday — the Muslim day of rest and prayer — since Assad took flight.

Umayyad Square in Damascus was jammed with vehicles, people and waving flags as fireworks shot into the air, AFPTV live images showed.

Thousands flocked to the capital’s landmark Umayyad Mosque, some raising the three-star Syrian independence flag that none dared wave in the capital during Assad’s repressive rule.

Crowds also gathered in the squares and streets of other Syrian cities, including Homs, Hama and Idlib.

There was a festive and relaxed atmosphere as hundreds rallied in the main square of Syria’s second city Aleppo, a scene of fierce fighting during the country’s civil war, AFP correspondents said.

A huge billboard depicting Assad and his father Hafez was set on fire.

Ahmad Abd Al-Majed, 39, an engineer who returned to Aleppo from Turkiye, said that many shed “tears of joy and happiness.”

“Syrians deserve to be happy,” he said.

In the southern city of Sweida, the heartland of Syria’s Druze minority, Bayan Al-Hinnawi, 77, never believed he would live to see such a day.

“It’s a wonderful sight. Nobody could have imagined this could happen,” said Hinnawi, who spent 17 years in prison.

Tens of thousands missing

Sunni Muslim HTS is rooted in Syria’s branch of Al-Qaeda and designated a terrorist organization by many Western governments.

The group has sought to moderate its rhetoric, and the interim government insists the rights of all Syrians will be protected — as will the rule of law.

The European Union was seeking “to establish contacts” with the new rulers soon, an EU official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The UN refugee agency said the new government had sent “constructive” initial signals, including asking the organization to stay in the country.

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) democratic countries, who met virtually on Friday, expressed hope for “a peaceful and orderly transition through the definition of an inclusive political process” in Syria.

Inside much of Syria, the focus is turning toward unraveling the secrets of Assad’s rule, particularly the network of detention centers and suspected torture sites.

Syrians have descended upon prisons, hospitals and morgues in search of long-disappeared loved ones.

“I turned the world upside down looking,” Abu Mohammed told AFP as he searched for news of three missing relatives at the Mazzeh air base in Damascus.

“We just want a hint of where they were.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross said it documented more than 35,000 disappearances during Assad’s rule, with the actual number likely far higher.

While Syrians celebrate the end of Assad’s brutal rule, they face a struggle for necessities in a country ravaged by war, sanctions and runaway inflation.

On Friday, the EU announced the launch of an “air bridge” operation to deliver an initial 50 tons of health supplies via neighboring Turkiye.

Israel ready to stay in buffer zone

Assad was propped up by Russia — where a senior Russian official told US media he has fled — as well as Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told private NTV television that his country had urged Russia and Iran not to intervene militarily “to ensure minimum loss of life.”

The rebels launched their offensive on November 27, the same day a ceasefire took effect in the Israel-Hezbollah war, which saw Israel inflict staggering losses on Assad’s Lebanese ally.

Both Israel and Turkiye, which backs some of the rebels who ousted Assad, have since carried out strikes inside Syria.

Israel’s latest strikes hit military sites in the Eastern Qalamun region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said Saturday.

Israel has also sent troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone that separated Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights, in a move the UN said violated a 1974 armistice.

The army has been ordered to “prepare to remain” there throughout the winter, Defense Minister Israel Katz’s office said Friday.

OIC condemns ‘horrific’ Israeli attack on Gaza’s Nuseirat camp that killed dozens

December 14, 2024

RIYADH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Friday denounced the killing of 33 Palestinians in a crowded Gaza camp as Israel continued its attacks on the enclave.

“The act is considered an extension of organized terrorism and continuous genocide that has been ongoing for more than fourteen months against the Palestinian people,” the organization said in an Arabic statement.

The attack, which the OIC called “horrific,” was on a post office in Nuseirat and follows a long list of Israeli attacks which have killed civilians in dense makeshift camps in the Gaza Strip. Israel claims to be targeting Palestinian militants in the strikes.

Relatives of the deceased wept and read verses of the Qur’an as they gathered at Al-Awda Hospital before burying their loved ones on Friday.

“Every time things happen and we say there will be a truce and we will rest... After that, they change their minds, they change their minds, we don’t know why,” Mattar said.

“They have killed the hope and optimism,” said Suheil Mattar, whose grandchildren and daughter-in-law were killed.

Gaza health officials said Friday that at least 44,875 people had been killed in more than 14 months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants. Over 105,454 people have been wounded during the same period, according to the enclave’s health ministry.

Turkiye says told Russia, Iran not to intervene militarily in Syria rebel push

December 14, 2024

ANKARA: Turkiye said Friday it had urged Russia and Iran not to intervene militarily to support Bashar Assad’s forces as Islamist-led rebels mounted their lightning advance on Damascus that ended with the Syrian strongman’s ouster.

“The most important thing was to talk to the Russians and Iranians to ensure that they didn’t enter the equation militarily. We had meetings with (them) and they understood,” Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told Turkiye’s private NTV television.

He said if Moscow and Tehran, both key Assad allies since the start of the civil war in 2011, had come to the Syrian president’s aid, the rebels could still have won but the outcome could have been far more violent.

“If Assad had received support, the opposition could have achieved victory with their determination, but it would have taken a long time and could have been bloody,” he said.

Turkiye’s aim was to “hold focused talks with the two important power players to ensure minimum loss of life,” Fidan said.

When the Islamist-led HTS rebel alliance first began its offensive on November 27, Moscow and Tehran initially offered Assad military support to hold off the rebels.

But the scale of the collapse of Assad’s forces took them by surprise.

And it came at a time when both nations were caught up with problems of their own: Russia mired in the war with Ukraine, and Iran’s proxies including Lebanon’s Hezbollah taking a major battering from Israel.

They quickly realized the game was up, that Assad “was no longer someone to invest in” and “there was no point anymore,” the Turkish minister added.

Turkiye expressed support for the rebels with experts saying it even gave its green light for the offensive by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), without being directly involved.

Many nations, especially in the region, have expressed concern about HTS, which is rooted in Al-Qaeda’s former Syria branch and proscribed by many Western governments as a terror organization.

But Fidan said it was “perfectly normal” to have such concerns about HTS, which would “need to be resolved.”

“No one knows them as well as we do, we want a Syria without terrorism, not posing a threat to the countries in the region.”

Since 2016, Turkiye has held considerable sway over northwestern Syria, maintaining a working relationship with HTS which ran most of the Idlib area, which was Syria’s last bastion of opposition.

With open lines of communication with HTS, Turkiye was relaying such concerns directly to them, he said.

“We reflect our friends’ concerns to them and ensure they take steps. They have made many announcements and people see they are on the right track,” he said.

The message that Ankara was sending to the new administration in Damascus was: “This is what Turkiye — which has stood by you for years — expects. And this is what the world expects,” he said.

Gaza heads toward famine, World Food Programme says

December 13, 2024

UNITED NATIONS: The deputy executive director of the UN World Food Programme has been on whirlwind visits to hotspots in the Middle East and Sudan to assess dire humanitarian situations and escalating demands for food from millions of people trapped or fleeing conflicts.

But Carl Skau said in an interview this week that the Rome-based agency has been forced to make major cuts to the numbers of people it can help because of a lack of funding.

The humanitarian organization is working to diversify its funding, including targeting the private sector, but Skau said, “it’s going to be a tough time ahead, no doubt, with increasing gaps.”

Skau said the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza is dire but he’s equally worried about southern Gaza, “if not even more,” because of the million or so people on the beach north of Khan Younis as winter approaches.

In northern areas, where the UN estimates there are still 65,000 Palestinians and no aid has arrived for more than two months, Skau said Israeli military operations, lawlessness and taking of food aid have prevented access to the needy.

He said some humanitarian convoys have gotten through to the broader northern area including Gaza City, where the UN estimates some 300,000 people are located.

In the south, Skau said, the organization assisted around 1.2 million people in June, July, August and into September.

Zardari warns of global fallout over seminary bill

Kalbe Ali

December 14, 2024

• Insists changes may invite criticism or sanctions from bodies like FATF

• Says registering madressahs under Societies Registration Act can fuel sectarianism

• JUI-F accuses presidency of acting under external pressure

ISLAMABAD: As the controversy over the Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill 2024 deepens, President Asif Ali Zardari has cautioned parliamentarians to consider international obligations before altering the existing procedures for registering religious seminaries.

In a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dated Nov 13, 2024, President Zardari warned that changes to the current arrangements could invite criticism and sanctions from global organisations.

“Lawmakers should keep in mind the international environment that when a Madrasah is registered under a society, which has conflicting interests, would invite international criticism/sanctions for Pakistan,” he wrote.

The letter was in response to a reminder sent by PM Shehbaz on Nov 4, urging the president to approve the amendment bill. The prime minister assured that corrections in Para 6 had been made to address earlier objections raised by the presidency.

However, in his reply, President Zardari reiterated his reservations. He argued that bypassing the current procedure for madressah registration could have serious repercussions, including adverse reviews by international bodies such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and might imperil the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) programme.

The president said that since correction has been made in the bill, as was pointed out in Para 6 of the previous summary, the current summary may be taken as the one sent in taken as the one sent in accordance with Clause 1 of Article 75 of the Constitution and the previous summary may be ignored as the bill was not furnished according to constitutional provisions.

President Zardari also highlighted constitutional and legal inconsistencies in the proposed bill. He pointed out that the original law, the Pakistan Madrasa Education (Establishment and Affiliation of Model Dini Madaris) Board Ordinance, 2001, and the Islamabad Capital Territory Trust Act, 2020, were already in effect. The amendment, he said, does not specify how it would override these existing laws, creating ambiguity.

The president argued that Clause 6 of Section 21 of the amendment could nullify existing laws without appropriate provisions.

“By virtue of amendments by the provinces to the Societies Registration Act, 1860, it has practically become a law for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), yet jurisdiction of the proposed amendment should have been specified that it would be applicable in ICT only to avoid confusion in the implementation of the law,” the president wrote.

He also raised concern about the incompatibility of madressah education with the preamble to the Societies Registration Act, 1860. He pointed out that the Act includes fields such as fine arts, which conflict with madressah education and could lead to legal challenges under Article 227 of the Constitution.

The president warned that registering madressahs under the Societies Registration Act could make societies already established under this law vulnerable to further sectarianism and other divisive tendencies. He also cautioned that allowing multiple madressahs to operate under a single society could create “fiefdoms”.

‘External pressure’

The Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) has strongly criticised the president’s objections. The party, which has been advocating for the bill’s enactment, accused the presidency of acting under external pressure. It said that the president’s objections were surprising and appeared to lack legal standing.

“The president’s objections were not made within the time period of 10 days as given in the Constitution, and the objections made in instalments do not have legal standing,” JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri said.

He said that the objections should have been sent to the National Assembly speaker, and the ones sent to the speaker had already been answered.

The JUI-F also accused the government of delaying the bill’s enactment, suggesting a conspiracy against religious seminaries. The party has demanded that objections be addressed promptly and the bill enacted without further delay.

The Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill 2024 was passed by the Senate and National Assembly on Oct 20 and 21, respectively. JUI-F had previously sought copies of the president’s objections, which it claimed had been rectified before the bill was returned for presidential assent.

Trump vows to end 'very costly' daylight saving time

December 14, 2024

Nadine Yousif

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he wants to end daylight saving time (DST), arguing it is "inconvenient" and "very costly" to Americans.

In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump said DST had "a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't" and that his Republican party would work to end it.

DST is the practice of moving the clock ahead by one hour in the spring and back an hour in the autumn to make better use of natural daylight.

It is observed in a third of the world's countries, according to Pew Research Center, including most of Europe. Some in the US, however, have long advocated to end the timeworn tradition.

Those who want to stick with standard time say it benefits our health, as it is better to have more light in the morning, paving the way for improved sleep cycles on darker evenings. They say DST can be disorienting to sleep schedules.

But others want to make DST permanent instead, arguing that brighter evenings, especially for those commuting from work or school, would reduce crime, conserve energy and even save lives in terms of reduced road accidents.

Both sides say their preferred option would be better for the economy.

Trump's plan is not the first attempt to alter the biannual practice of changing clocks seasonally in the US.

Making daylight saving time permanent was the aim of a 2022 bill that passed the Democratic-controlled Senate.

But the Sunshine Protection Act, which was introduced by Republican Senator Marco Rubio, never made it to President Joe Biden's desk.

Rubio has since been picked by Trump for the role of secretary of state under his incoming administration.

The US first began changing its clocks seasonally in 1918 during World War One in an effort to conserve fuel. It was unpopular with farmers, and was repealed after the war.

But DST returned again during World War Two, and was made permanent in 1966, though states could opt out.

Hawaii and most of Arizona currently do not follow time changes under DST.

Research by Joan Costa-i-Font, a professor at the London School of Economics, found that DST has had "detrimental effects on sleep and physical health, and on feelings of fatigue, stress, time stress and mental health".

Prof Costa-i-Font's study found that, in monetary terms, an end to DST would lead to an increase in economic output of €754 ($792; £627) per person per year.

Countries that have ended the practice include Mexico in 2022, though DST is still maintained in regions near the US border for economic and logistical reasons. Jordan also ended the practice that year.

Others, like Turkey and Russia, have implemented a permanent DST instead in the past decade.

In a Monmouth University Poll, researchers found that about two-thirds of people in the US want make DST permanent.

Canadian government moves to end weeks-long postal strike

December 14, 2024

Nadine Yousif

The Canadian government is moving to end a nearly month-long postal workers' strike that has disrupted mail delivery across the country ahead of the holidays.

On Friday, Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon ordered the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to send Canada Post employees back to work if an agreement is not reached soon with their employer.

Around 55,000 postal workers began striking on 15 November over pay and working conditions. The two sides have since failed to reach an agreement, with federal mediators concluding a few weeks ago that negotiations were too far apart.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) denounced the government's order "in the strongest terms".

In a statement on Friday, the CUPW called the move an "assault on our constitutionally protected right to collectively bargain and to strike".

Meanwhile, Canada Post said in a statement that it looks forward to welcoming its employees back to work and resuming its services.

The Crown corporation added that it remains committed to reaching a negotiated agreement with the union, but said it wants to do so while "also meeting the postal needs of Canadians."

The Canadian Industrial Relations Board is expected to rule on Minister MacKinnon's request next week.

The strike has impacted businesses during one of the biggest shopping periods of the year. With deliveries halted, inventory has sat in warehouses across the country while shipping costs have increased.

Lorne James, an Ontario business owner, told the BBC last week that he fears the strike is "going to wipe out a good number of businesses" due to steep financial losses.

In Canada's northern communities - where Canada Post is the sole mail delivery provider - the strike has had a profound impact on those who rely on the postal service for the delivery of essentials, like medicine and cheque payments.

Service Canada has also reportedly withheld the delivery of 85,000 passports and other important documents while the strike is ongoing.

Announcing the order on Friday, Minister MacKinnon said "Canadians are rightly fed up" with the strike. He added that it is not a decision he takes lightly, "but in this situation, it is the right one."

The order would ask striking employees to go back to work under their existing collective agreement until 22 May, by which then the minister hopes a new agreement will be in place.

The union has been trying to negotiate a wage increase of 19% over the next four years - higher than the 11.5% increase initially proposed by Canada Post. They are also negotiating issues around benefits, sick leave, job conditions and security.

"Our demands are reasonable: fair wages, safe working conditions, the right to retire with dignity and the expansion of services at the public post office," the union has said.

CUPW national president Jan Simpson has since accused Canada Post of dragging its feet so the federal government can intervene. Meanwhile, Canada Post accused the union of increasing their demands instead of reaching a compromise.

When the strike began, Canada Post warned that its services would continue to be disrupted even if an agreement is reached due to backlogs in deliveries.

It added that it has already felt a financial impact, with customers switching to private competitors or stopping use of its services altogether as the strike is ongoing.

The last Canada post began in October 2018 and ended after more than a month when the federal government mandated that employees go back to work through legislation.

That job action cost Canada Post around C$135m ($96.7m; £76.27m).

What we know about the mysterious drones buzzing over New Jersey

December 14, 2024

Bernd Debusmann Jr

Mystery continues to swirl after nearly a month of drone sightings over New Jersey, sparking fear among residents and furious debate about what the flying objects are - and if they are drones at all.

US authorities have been unable to provide definitive answers, saying only that the objects are not believed to pose a danger to the public or national security.

On Thursday, White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters that available images suggested that many of the reported drone sightings were actually manned aircraft.

But some lawmakers have criticised the government's handling of the drones and the lack of information available to the public.

Here's what we know.

Where have drones been spotted?

Dozens of drone sightings have been reported over New Jersey since 18 November, according to local authorities.

The drones were initially spotted near the Raritan river, a waterway which feeds into the Round Valley Reservoir - the largest in New Jersey, the Associated Press reported.

The sightings soon spread to other parts of the state, including New Jersey's coast.

Some of the flights were spotted near Picatinny Arsenal - a sensitive military research facility - as well as near President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in the town of Bedminster, New Jersey.

In nearby New York City, several drones were reported flying over the Bronx on 12 December, a police official told CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

Officers who responded to the incident saw the drones flying overhead, but they disappeared soon afterwards.

Drones have also been reported in other parts of the state, according to New York State Police.

Police in Connecticut have also confirmed that "suspicious drone activity" has taken place in various parts of the state. A drone detection system has been deployed around the towns of Groton and New London.

In Maryland, former Republican Governor Larry Hogan claimed he saw what appeared to be "dozens" of drones over his residence in Davidsonville, about 25 miles (40km) from Washington DC.

"Like many who have observed these drones, I do not know if this increasing activity over our skies is a threat to public safety or national security," he wrote on X. "But the public is growing increasingly concerned and frustrated with the complete lack of transparency and the dismissive attitude of the federal government."

In late November, the United States Air Force also confirmed that unidentified drones were spotted over three US airbases in the UK: RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk.

UK defence sources told the BBC that suspicion had fallen on a "state actor" being responsible for the incursions.

In October, the Wall Street Journal also reported that mysterious drones were seen for 17 days near US military facilities in Virginia.

What are these flying objects?

Both federal and state authorities have said that they do not believe the drones are dangerous or pose a threat to US national security.

Following a briefing with the Department of Homeland Security on 11 December, New Jersey assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia said the drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio.

Fantasia said the drones are up to 6ft (1.8m) in diameter, travel with lights turned off and "operate in a co-ordinated manner".

Her comments stand in stark contrast to the White House, which has suggested that these are "manned aircraft".

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security also said that the majority of sightings appear to be lawful, manned flights.

None have been reported in restricted airspace, the statement added.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement on Friday saying more and more people are using drones, meaning more people are noticing them in the sky.

It added that while drones can be flown in most locations below 400ft (121m), drones can't be flown within controlled airspace around an airport without FAA authorisation; over designated, national security-sensitive facilities; in certain military bases, infrastructure and national landmarks; and in airspace covered by temporary flight restrictions.

Where are they coming from?

If the objects are confirmed to be drones - which at this point is unconfirmed - it is unclear who might be operating them.

Citing anonymous "high sources", New Jersey Republican representative Jeff Van Drew said that they were coming from an Iranian "mothership" in the Atlantic.

The Pentagon swiftly dismissed the comment, saying "there is no truth to that".

"There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there's no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States," deputy spokesperson Sabrina Singh told reporters.

Another lawmaker, Illinois Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi - who is on a congressional committee that looks at China's Communist Party - told media outlet NewsNation that there is a "non-trivial" chance that China could be involved.

"It's definitely a possibility and the likelihood that they can then access data that is collected by these drones is very high," he said.

The Pentagon and White House have both insisted that there is no foreign origin for the objects.

Van Drew and other lawmakers have pushed back on those denials.

"Here's the deal: they don't know what it is. They don't know what it's about," Van Drew told Fox News. "They have no idea where it comes from, but they know what it's not about? That's nonsense."

In a separate incident across the country, a northern California man was charged on 11 December with flying a drone over and taking pictures of Vandenberg Space Force Base, located near Santa Barbara.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on 30 November, according to prosecutors.

The man, 39-year-old Chinese national Yinpiao Zhou was arrested just before he boarded a flight to China. He appeared in court on Tuesday and no plea was was taken.

There has been no suggestion that the incident is related to the spate of reported drone sightings on the east coast.

Can the drones be stopped?

Several lawmakers have suggested that the drones should be shot down and analysed to determine their origin and intentions.

Among them is President-elect Donald Trump, who took to his Truth Social media platform to suggest that drones couldn't be flying without the government's knowledge.

"Let the public know, and now," he wrote. "Otherwise, shoot them down".

The US Federal Aviation Administration has also established temporary flight restrictions prohibiting drone flights over Bedminster and Picatinny.

In a statement, the FAA also warned that drone operators who conduct unsafe or dangerous operations could face fines of up to $75,000 (£59,000) and have their drone pilot certificates revoked.

In a letter to US President Joe Biden published on 13 December, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy urged federal agencies to "work together" to solve the mystery, as well as push Congress to extend counter-drone capabilities to local law enforcement.

Some residents have suggested they may take action against the drones themselves - something authorities have strongly warned against doing, as it is illegal.

"A good shotgun will fix that problem," a man commented on a video of a drone on social media.

Jeff Bezos’ Amazon to donate $1 million to Trump

13 Dec, 2024

The US online giant Amazon has confirmed it will donate $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural fund and stream the ceremony as well, in what has been widely interpreted as a peace offering by CEO Jeff Bezos.

The Washington Post, owned by Bezos since 2013, has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics since his first term in the White House.

“Bezos is donating through Amazon,” a source told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. The company has since confirmed this in a statement to CNN.

In addition to the direct donation to the inaugural fund, Amazon’s Prime Video will stream Trump’s inauguration as an in-kind contribution valued at another $1 million. Bezos is also supposed to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida next week.

Bezos’ net worth has been estimated at almost $250 billion, so the amount of the donations is largely symbolic. The tech mogul began shifting away from overt support to the Democrats earlier this year, praising Trump’s “tremendous grace and courage under literal fire” after the July 13 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. He then vetoed the Post’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in October, causing no small consternation among staff and subscribers.

Earlier this week, the Journal reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg would also contribute $1 million to the Trump inaugural fund. Zuckerberg visited Mar-a-Lago last month and had dinner with the president-elect.

Both gestures were seen as an attempt to atone for donating over $400 million to Democrats and to various institutions in majority-Democrat areas, and later banning the sitting president from Facebook and Instagram after the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.

Donations to an inaugural committee are not subject to any contribution amount limitations, but need to be reported to the Federal Elections Commission as such.

Earlier this month, at an event hosted by the New York Times, Bezos said he would try to talk Trump out of the idea that the legacy media is “the enemy of the people.”

“What I’ve seen so far is that he is calmer than he was the first time and more confident, more settled,” Bezos said, suggesting that Trump might be amenable to persuasion.

Meanwhile, SpaceX owner Elon Musk has emerged as one of Trump’s closest allies, first by buying Twitter in 2022 and ending most censorship on that platform, and later by openly endorsing Trump and donating an estimated $200 million to his re-election bid.

Iran prevents transfer of executed Afghan’s body to Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

December 14, 2024

Residents in Nangarhar Report Iranian Military Forces Preventing Transfer of Executed Individual’s Body to Afghanistan

According to reports on Friday, December 13, the individual was executed in Iran 13 days ago.

The person was a resident of the Achin district in Nangarhar, and was executed in Iran on charges of drug trafficking.

Reports indicate that the body of the executed individual was transported to the Islam Qala border, but Iranian border guards have demanded payment for transferring the body to Afghanistan.

It is worth noting that Iran has consistently executed Afghan nationals, and in the latest instance, two young Afghan men from Farah province were executed in Iran on charges of drug trafficking.

The situation further complicates the already strained relationship between the Taliban government in Afghanistan and neighboring countries. The failure of the Taliban to mediate in such cases raises concerns about their ability to protect the rights and interests of Afghan citizens abroad.

Turkish police detain nearly 1,000 undocumented refugees

By Fidel Rahmati

December 14, 2024

On Thursday, Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that 981 undocumented refugees were arrested across various cities during a joint operation conducted by the country’s security forces.

The operation, which aimed at identifying and detaining illegal migrants, also led to the arrest of 31 individuals, including nine foreign nationals, on charges of human trafficking.

Yerlikaya further stated on social media that 366,838 individuals were questioned during the operation, which involved more than 28,000 security personnel and covered over 15,250 locations. This large-scale operation is part of Turkey’s ongoing efforts to manage and control undocumented migration.

The detained refugees were transferred to detention centers, and the process for their deportation has begun. While the nationality of the detainees was not disclosed, the majority of refugees in Turkey come from Afghanistan and Syria, both of which are experiencing severe socio-political turmoil.

Turkey has implemented an ongoing nationwide operation, “Kalkan,” to identify and arrest undocumented refugees. The 35th round of this operation took place on Thursday, December 12, across various cities. These measures are aimed at addressing the increasing number of refugees arriving in the country, particularly from Afghanistan and Syria.

The situation for Afghan refugees in neighboring countries, particularly in Turkey, is increasingly dire. Many Afghans flee their home country due to security concerns, economic hardship, and the ongoing conflict exacerbated by the Taliban’s return to power.

However, upon arriving in neighboring countries like Turkey, they face a precarious existence marked by detention, deportation, and limited rights.

While Turkey has been a significant host for refugees, its recent crackdown on undocumented migrants, including those fleeing Afghanistan, is creating further uncertainty and fear for those seeking safety.

The forced deportations, coupled with harsh living conditions, have resulted in a tragic cycle for many Afghan refugees who seek a better life but instead find themselves in dire situations in foreign lands.

This underscores the broader humanitarian crisis affecting millions of displaced people in the region and highlights the need for international support and cooperation to protect their rights and provide lasting solutions.

The United Nations Trust Fund for Afghanistan has announced a $9 million donation from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency to support the people of Afghanistan.

The Trust Fund shared this news on its X page on Friday, December 13, noting that these funds are aimed at providing sustainable solutions to the Afghan community during these difficult times.

According to the United Nations Trust Fund for Afghanistan, this vital support empowers Afghan communities with resilience, hope, and long-term solutions during challenging periods.

The message from the agency also mentioned that “together, we are making a lasting impact.”

Earlier, Sweden also announced a $6.8 million donation to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Sweden has contributed over $85 million to Afghanistan’s humanitarian fund since 2014.

In addition, Norway also pledged support on Wednesday, December 11, for the reconstruction of life in Afghanistan and the empowerment of women.

Meanwhile, as winter sets in, the United Nations and international aid organizations have warned of the growing humanitarian needs in Afghanistan.

According to international organizations, approximately 23.7 million people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance.

The continued support from countries like Sweden and Norway highlights the ongoing commitment of the international community to the well-being of the Afghan people.

However, with the approaching winter and escalating needs, it is crucial to maintain and increase humanitarian assistance to help millions of vulnerable Afghans. As the crisis deepens, these aid initiatives can play a pivotal role in ensuring survival, stability, and hope for the future.

Why restoring ecosystem balance is crucial for economies, societies, and wildlife

HAIFA ALSHAMMARI

December 14, 2024

RIYADH: Imbalanced ecosystems and biodiversity loss, driven by habitat destruction, pollution, or climate change, are key challenges the Saudi Green Initiative is tackling to mitigate their environmental, economic, and social impacts.

The decline of certain species can destabilize food systems, leading to overpopulation of others and resource depletion. This imbalance, whether driven by natural factors or human activities, often degrades habitats as unchecked species overgraze or consume vegetation.

“The highest point of the mountain is connected to the deepest point in the ocean,” said Mohammad Qurban, CEO of the Saudi National Center for Wildlife, explaining how environmental damage in one area is linked to issues elsewhere.

For instance, desertification in mountain peaks leads to soil erosion, which is carried by rain into the seas. Along with the soil, plastics and toxins from land and air pollute the water, destabilizing marine ecosystems, he told Arab News at the UN Convention to Combat Desertification’s COP16, which concluded in Riyadh on Friday.

“Where does this go? It goes to the ecosystem,” Qurban said, referring to the movement of toxins from land to the sea. “So, we start losing coral reefs, seagrass, and we start losing fish.

“We are all part of this system that we call the food web. It is a chain. With each link lost, we lose the next one and the next one.”

As part of its ecosystem management efforts to combat desertification, the Saudi government plans to plant 10 billion trees and rehabilitate 40 million hectares of land by 2030.

The Kingdom also aims to protect 30 percent of its land and marine areas by 2030 through the 30x30 initiative, which Qurban discussed last week during the session “MEAs Synergies for Strengthened Environmental Governance: Insights from the Bern III Conference,” held on the sidelines of COP16.

Qurban said disturbances in one animal population can have consequences elsewhere, such as the overpopulation of another species. In his recent interview with Arab News, he recounted an incident in which a farmer contacted him about a snake species affecting his soil.

“He called me and told me to get rid of all the snakes. I said sure, but you have to promise me that you won’t complain if you witness an increase in rats and mice around the area because (the snakes) feed on them.”

The UN has said that a million animal and plant species worldwide are at risk of extinction as a result of human-induced environmental issues.

Biodiversity loss also reduces resilience, making ecosystems more vulnerable to external shocks, such as diseases or climate events.

“Having a balanced ecosystem means the rains will come when we expect them to come, means the cold comes when it’s just right for our crops to get a little of a nip in the air, and means that the sun comes out at the right time when the grains have to ripen and dry under the sun. That is a balanced ecosystem,” Inger Andersen, executive director of the UN Environment Programme, told Arab News.

Restoring balance is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems, which sustain life on Earth, including human communities that depend on these natural systems for resources and services.

“Some people who are living in the cities may not think that they are relying on the ecosystem because they get their food from the grocery store,” Andersen said. “But the reality, of course, is that there is an ecosystem somewhere in the world that provides that food that they purchased. So, we are all relying on that ecosystem.”

Furthermore, an unstable ecosystem imposes a financial burden on the government for restoration and ongoing maintenance.

In Asir, in the Kingdom’s southwest, the decline in Arabian leopard populations led to a significant increase in the baboon population. Large troops of baboons, typically found in the southern mountain ranges, have negatively affected local communities. As a result, despite the region’s stunning landscapet, tourism in the area has declined in recent years.

“People lost tourists in Asir because of the baboons,” said Qurban, citing safety concerns. “Some people abandoned their farms; they abandoned their farms completely in Asir and Al-Baha.”

And while some argue that protecting and restoring a sustainable environment is costly to the economy, other business owners believe the cost of sustainable development depends on their objectives.

During a panel discussion at COP16, Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed, CEO of the asset management company KBW Ventures, discussed the economics of ecosystems and the real financial costs of implementing green development.

He said that solutions vary by location and must align with the private sector’s objectives to effectively implement sustainable development goals.

“It is not a one size fits all,” he said. “It is a bouquet of opportunities that you have to be customized for it to be actually scalable and profitable for the private sectors and industries in these private sectors to actually flourish.”

Although securing a balanced ecosystem may be costly, the Kingdom made several significant announcements at COP16 over the past two weeks regarding environmental projects.

The Saudi Green Initiative launched five new projects worth $60 million, reflecting the Kingdom’s bold environmental strategy and commitment to sustainable development. This brings the total investment in SGI projects to more than $188 billion.

But Saudi Arabia is not alone in its commitment to green development; many countries share this goal. However, some urban activities can inadvertently harm the environment despite efforts to protect it.

Damage to soil and polluted water sources have also increased social pressure in some communities, prompting people to migrate to regions with better environmental conditions for their families and future.

“If the ecosystem is so imbalanced that I can no longer farm, that I can no longer sustain my family, and I can no longer feed my children, I have only one choice, and it has been the same for thousands of years,” Andersen said. “I will walk.”

French Consulate in Jeddah hosts event to mark end of Red Sea International Film Festival

AFSHAN AZIZ

December 13, 2024

JEDDAH: The French Consulate in Jeddah organized an event to mark the successful conclusion of the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival.

The gathering brought together figures from Saudi Arabia and France — representatives from film education institutions, members of the French delegation, and Saudi partners — underscoring the cultural and professional ties between the two nations in the film sector.

Mohammed Nehad, the consul general of France in Jeddah, delivered a speech highlighting France’s commitment to advancing Saudi cinema, emphasizing support in areas such as film training and education and helping to introduce the 48-Hour Film Challenge, which encourages Saudi filmmakers, writers, and cinema students to create a short film within just 48 hours.

He told Arab News: “The Red Sea Film Festival is an essential platform for bringing together French and Saudi filmmakers. It helps create strong cultural connections by offering opportunities for exchange, dialogue, and collaboration.

“This festival promotes the sharing of technical and artistic expertise. For us at the French Consulate, it represents a unique opportunity to support talent and strengthen the ties between the two nations through cinema, a universal art that transcends borders and unites cultures.”

The French Consulate’s support extends beyond the festival, with initiatives designed to foster cultural and artistic ties between Saudi Arabia and France. These initiatives include a strong presence at the Red Sea Souk, a dedicated marketplace for professionals, where the consulate organizes the souk’s closing evening to showcase collaborations between French and Saudi filmmakers.

Support for the 48-Hour Film Challenge also offers young teams the chance to win a three-week residency in France, further honing their creative projects.

Additionally, the consulate facilitates cinematic training programs in collaboration with educational institutions, transferring French expertise to Saudi talent.

Several companies from the French delegation, such as ICC Immersion, actively contributed to the Red Sea Souk, showcasing the consulate’s commitment to supporting the regional film industry and cultural exchange.

Nehad said: “We actively support emerging French talent, particularly those exploring new ideas and narrative forms.

“The Red Sea Film Festival is an ideal opportunity to showcase their work. The consulate facilitates their participation and encourages collaboration with Saudi filmmakers, fostering enriching exchanges for the international film industry.”

How will the World Cup change Saudi Arabia?

SULAFA ALKHUNAIZI

December 13, 2024

RIYADH: Preparations are set to begin across Saudi Arabia to ensure a seamless World Cup in 2034 after the Kingdom was officially named host.

So, how will the World Cup, one of the world’s premier sporting events, change Saudi Arabia? As stated in the Kingdom’s bid, games will be played in 15 stadiums, with 11 yet to be built, spread across Riyadh, Jeddah, Alkhobar, Abha, and NEOM.

Luckily, the Kingdom has ample time to learn from previous World Cups, as well as the upcoming event: 2026 will be jointly hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, and 2030 jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

Saudi Arabia’s opening game and final will be held in the new 92,760-capacity King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh.

Existing stadiums, including “The Shining Jewel” in Jeddah, will undergo major refurbishment and expansion.

Each stadium must have a capacity of at least 40,000, with quarterfinal and semifinal venues able to accommodate 60,000 spectators. Stadiums for the opening match and the final must have a minimum capacity of 80,000.

As well as the stadiums, Saudi Arabia plans to construct around 230,000 hotel rooms across five host cities to accommodate visiting fans and dignitaries.

Looking at its eastern neighbor Qatar might give some indication of how the major infrastructure projects will leave their mark on Saudi Arabia.

While many of Qatar’s World Cup venues, including the iconic Lusail Stadium, are being used by the Qatar Stars League, others are being repurposed. These include the Al-Bayt Stadium, part of which will be converted into a hotel and shopping center.

Ebraheem Alghafees is one of many Saudis excited about the Kingdom hosting the World Cup.

Alghafees attended the 2022 tournament in Qatar, and said that it was nothing short of extraordinary.

“Attending the games was thrilling, and the electrifying atmosphere in the stadiums left an indelible impression on me.”

He told Arab News that Saudi Arabia can “draw several lessons” from previous World Cups.

“First, investing heavily in infrastructure and transportation is crucial for accommodating global audiences.

“Second, creating a cultural narrative that showcases Saudi heritage, while leveraging advanced technologies, can help deliver a memorable experience.

“Lastly, fostering a welcoming environment through hospitality initiatives will ensure that visitors leave with positive impressions of the Kingdom.”

Describing his excitement about Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the 2034 event, Alghafees said: “It represents a golden opportunity for the Kingdom to showcase its rapid transformation and global aspirations under Vision 2030.

“Hosting such an event will unite people worldwide and position Saudi Arabia as a hub for cultural exchange, innovation, and excellence. It is an honor to see the Kingdom rise to the occasion on such a grand scale.”

Saudi Arabia first held a FIFA event, the World Youth Championship, in 1989. In 1997, there was the Confederations Cup.

But during the past five to 10 years, the number of sporting events and tournaments — not just football — held in the Kingdom has skyrocketed, earning the country a solid reputation as a host.

Vietnam celebrates 25 years of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia

RASHID HASSAN

December 13, 2024

RIYADH: The Vietnamese Embassy in Riyadh, in coordination with the nation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is holding a series of cultural activities to mark 25 years of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia.

The “Vietnam Days 2024” silver jubilee events, from Friday to Sunday, is being held at the Cultural Palace in the Diplomatic Quarter. Saudi Arabia and Vietnam established diplomatic ties in 1999.

In a recent interview with Arab News, Dang Xuan Dzung, Vietnam’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said this year marks “a very important milestone in our relations.”

“The activities are taking place in both countries, the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Hanoi is also holding a series of events,” said Dzung.

“In September, we held at our mission (a) 25th anniversary ceremony during which I highlighted all the achievements that we recorded during the last 25 years,” said the envoy.

“In late October we welcomed our Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. He participated in the 8th Future Investment Initiative during his two-days Riyadh visit (Oct. 29 to 30) forming a significant milestone in bilateral relations and impetus for ties in the time ahead,” said Dzung.

He said the prime minister’s trip was aimed at boosting relations, and he had met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The nation’s leader had been in Riyadh in October for the GCC-ASEAN Summit, said the envoy.

“They had a very good chance to review the bilateral relations and see what we can do together to promote it,” Dzung told Arab News on the sidelines of a press meet ahead of the cultural activities.

“We hope that (the) exchange of delegations will be intensified in the time to come. I do believe that exchanges of delegations will be taking place very soon at various levels, including high-level visits."

Dzung added that Saudi Arabia’s aid Agency KSrelief “has been a great help to us. They helped us in supporting victims of flooding and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We very much appreciate that assistance. Also, (the) Saudi Fund for Development has been helping us to build infrastructures in some provinces of Vietnam. So, we are very grateful for the constructions of roads, clinics, and vocational training colleges, funded by the SFD.”

Dzung added: “I really think that 25 years of cordial ties give me enough reasons to believe in the bright future of our relations. I am sure that a lot of potential held by both sides have not been fully tapped, so that gives up a lot of room to desire for and to strive for.”

The series of events at the Cultural Palace in Riyadh includes a photographic exhibition highlighting the years of diplomatic ties, and a display of Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage sites.

In addition, there will be exhibitions on Vietnamese lacquer paintings, the process of creating Dong Ho folk art, and the nation’s cuisine.

Trade between the two nations stood at $2.7 billion in 2023, and $2.5 billion in the first 10 months of 2024.

“We also see the two countries working closely in human resources development. We are now providing more engineers, skilled workers. People-to-people contacts has been developing very fast,” he added.

Hoang Huu Anh, deputy director-general of the department of cultural diplomacy and UNESCO affairs at the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry, told Arab News the cultural events are aimed at promoting his nation and fostering friendship between the two countries.

“We have seen two visits by our prime minister (over 12 months), so we are keen to take it forward with further developing people-to-people contact through cultural diplomacy.”

35,000 Carpets Spread In Saudi Arabia's Grand Mosqueof Mecca

December 13, 2024

Cairo: More than 35,000 carpets are spread across the Grand Mosque, Islam’s most sacred place in the Saudi city of Mecca, amid strenuous efforts to keep them clean and disinfected.

With carpets being part of the experience of the worshipper, these green carpets are distributed in 30 different sites across the sprawling mosque, a main destination for worshippers from across the globe.

The number of prayer carpets can be increased especially on Fridays when the Muslim weekly congregation prayers are held, to provide expansive and comfortable spaces for worshippers and pilgrims.

The Grand Mosque is home to the Holy Kaaba towards which Muslims around the world direct their prayers.

The mosque draws millions of Muslims annually from all over the world to offer prayers and perform Umrah or minor pilgrimage.

The care of the carpets in the mosque is handled according to a specific programme that includes cleaning and sterilisation works by using modern and environmentally friendly technologies, a state agency in charge of the two holiest mosques has said.

The process also includes replacing the carpets periodically to ensure complete comfort for worshippers and always maintain a high level of cleanliness.

The General Authority for Care of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque added that every carpet in the Grand Mosque undergoes a comprehensive examination to ensure that it is free of any defects or damage that may affect its quality. That said, small details are checked such as colours, fabric, and edges.

Georgia's turmoil deepens as ex-footballer to be named president

Rayhan Demytrie & Paul Kirby

December 14, 2024

A former Manchester City footballer is set to be appointed president on Saturday by Georgia's disputed parliament, after 16 days of pro-EU protests that have swept this country's towns and cities.

Mikheil Kavelashvili, now 53, is a former MP from the increasingly authoritarian ruling Georgian Dream party and the only candidate for the job.

The four main opposition groups have rejected Kavelashvili and have boycotted parliament, insisting that the elections held in October were rigged.

Georgia's outgoing pro-Western president, Salome Zourabichvili, has condemned Kavelashvili's election as a travesty, insisting she holds Georgia's only remaining legitimate institution.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused the president of trying to harm Georgia's interests, emphasising that when her term of office ends on 29 December, she will have to retire.

"We have very strong state institutions, so we certainly have no difficulty in bringing the situation under full control," he was quoted as saying on Friday.

Party colleague Nino Tsilosani told reporters that Zourabichvili was no longer president in the eyes of the public.

Protests against Georgian Dream began immediately after the October elections but they burst into life on 28 November when the government announced it was putting EU accession negotiations on hold until 2028.

An overwhelming majority of Georgians back the country's path to the European Union and it is part of the constitution.

Every night, the main avenue outside parliament fills with protesters draped in EU flags, demanding new elections.

Saturday's vote in parliament is expected to take several hours and prompt a spike in anti-government protests. It will involve a direct ballot by a 300-member electoral college made up of MPs and local officials loyal to Georgian Dream from around the country.

Ahead of the vote, the capital Tbilisi was convulsed on Friday by pop-up protests involving IT specialists, public sector workers, creative industry professionals, actors and lawyers.

"We are standing here to create a legal state once and for all, to respect the provisions of the constitution and human rights," said lawyer Davit Kikaleishvili, 47.

Kavelashvili is a founder of the People's Power party, known for being the main voice for anti-Western propaganda in Georgia.

He has accused opposition parties of acting as a "fifth column" directed from abroad, and described President Zourabichvili as a "chief agent".

Kavelashvili moved into politics after he was disqualified from seeking the leadership of the Georgian football federation because he lacked the qualifications.

Although his party ran alongside Georgian Dream in the October elections, it has now decided to act in parliament as a "healthy opposition", to fill the place of the "so-called radical opposition funded by foreign forces".

Georgian Dream, founded by billionaire businessman and former Georgian PM Bidzina Ivanishvili, has been accused of dragging the country back into Russia's sphere of influence.

Both the EU and US have condemned the government for democratic backsliding and more than 460 people have been detained across Georgia over the past two weeks, according to Transparency International.

More than 300 have been ill-treated or tortured, the organisation says, including dozens of people from Georgian media. Last weekend, thugs were filmed attacking a TV reporter and cameraman.

The EU has condemned the "brutal, unlawful force from the police" and foreign ministers are due to consider measures against the government when they meet on Monday.

The US state department has already imposed visa restrictions on Georgian officials, including government ministers and police.

Protesters have called on the international community to impose sanctions on top government officials as well as Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgia's most powerful man.

Pro-government groups have also waged a campaign of harassment towards civil society activists, beating them outside homes, and carrying out arbitrary arrests.

"There is systematic torture, inhuman and degrading treatment of citizens," said former public rights defender Nino Lomjaria.

Theatre workers who joined the protests on Friday chanted: "The police are everywhere, justice is nowhere."

At one point two men scaled a construction crane as protesters marched along an avenue. The pair waved a Georgian flag as the crowds cheered below.

No-one gets France's difficulty more than me, says Macron's new PM Bayrou

December 14, 2024

Paul Kirby

Centrist leader François Bayrou has become France's latest prime minister, chosen by President Emmanuel Macron in a bid to end months of political turmoil.

Bayrou, a 73-year-old mayor from the south-west who leads the MoDem party, said he was fully aware of the "Himalayan" task facing France, and he vowed to "hide nothing, neglect nothing and leave nothing aside".

He is seen by Macron's entourage as a potential consensus candidate and his task will be to avoid the fate of his predecessor.

Ex-Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier was ousted by MPs nine days ago and welcomed Bayrou to the prime minister's residence on Friday.

Barnier was voted out over a budget aimed at cutting France's budget deficit, which is set to hit 6.1% of economic output (GDP) this year. Bayrou said the deficit and public debt were a moral as well as a financial problem - because "passing it on to one's children is a terrible thing to do".

Macron is half-way through his second term as president and Bayrou will be his fourth prime minister this year.

French politics has been deadlocked ever since Macron called snap parliamentary elections during the summer and an opinion poll for BFMTV on Thursday suggested 61% of French voters were worried by the political situation.

Although a succession of allies lined up to praise Bayrou's appointment, Socialist regional leader Carole Delga said the whole process had become a "bad movie". Far-left France Unbowed (LFI) leader Manuel Bompard complained of a "pathetic spectacle".

The centre-left Socialists said they were ready to talk to Bayrou but would not take part in his government. Leader Olivier Faure said because Macron had chosen someone "from his own camp", the Socialists would remain in opposition.

President Macron has vowed to remain in office until his second term ends in 2027, despite Barnier's downfall last week.

He cut short a trip to Poland on Thursday and had been expected to name his new prime minister on Thursday night, but postponed his announcement until Friday.

He then met Bayrou at the Elysée Palace and a final decision was made hours later. But in an indication of the fraught nature of the talks, Le Monde newspaper suggested that Macron had preferred another ally, Roland Lescure, but changed his mind when Bayrou threatened to withdraw his party's support.

Bayrou arrived at the prime minister's residence at Hôtel Matignon late on Friday afternoon. A red carpet had been rolled out for the transfer of power even before his name was confirmed.

His challenge will be in forming a government that will not be brought down the way his predecessor's was in the National Assembly. The far left France Unbowed (LFI) have already threatened to demand a vote of no confidence as soon as they can.

Ahead of his appointment, Macron held round-table talks with leaders from all the main political parties, bar the far left of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen.

The question is who can be persuaded to join Bayrou's government, or at least agree a pact so they do not oust him.

When the only possible means of survival for a minority government is to build bridges on left and right, Bayrou has the advantage of having passable relations with both sides, reports BBC Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield.

Michel Barnier was appointed only in September and said on Friday he knew from the outset that his government's days were numbered.

He was voted out when Le Pen's National Rally joined left-wing MPs in rejecting his plans for €60bn (£50bn) in tax rises and spending cuts.

His outgoing government has put forward a bill to enable the provisions of the 2024 budget to continue into next year. But a replacement budget for 2025 will have to be approved once the next government takes office.

Bayrou said that reducing France's deficit and debt was a "moral obligation".

Barnier wished his successor his best wishes, adding that "our country is in an unprecedented and serious situation".

Under the political system of France's Fifth Republic, the president is elected for five years and names a prime minister whose choice of cabinet is then appointed by the president.

Unusually, President Macron called snap elections for parliament over the summer after poor results in the EU elections in June. The outcome left France in political stalemate, with three large political blocs made up of the left, centre and far right.

Eventually he chose Barnier to form a minority government reliant on Marine Le Pen's National Rally for its survival. Macron is now hoping to restore stability without depending on her party.

Three centre-left parties - the Socialists, Greens and Communists - broke ranks with the more radical left LFI by taking part in talks with Macron.

However, they made clear they wanted a prime minister from the left, rather than a centrist.

"I told you I wanted someone from the left and the Greens and I think Mr Bayrou isn't one or the other," Greens leader Marine Tondelier told French TV on Thursday.

Patrick Kanner of the Socialists said that just because his party was not joining Bayrou's government, "that doesn't mean we're going to bash it".

Sébastien Chenu, a National Rally MP, said for his party it was less about who Macron picked than the "political line" he chose. If Bayrou wanted to tackle immigration and the cost of living crisis then he would "find an ally in us".

Relations between the centre left and the radical LFI of Jean-Luc Mélenchon appear to have broken down over the three parties' decision to pursue talks with President Macron.

After the LFI leader called on his former allies to steer clear of a coalition deal, Olivier Faure of the Socialists told French TV that "the more Mélenchon shouts the less he's heard".

Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen has called for her party's policies on the cost of living to be taken into account by the incoming government, by building a budget that "doesn't cross each party's red lines".

François Bayrou commands respect - but can he save France from crisis?

Hugh Schofield

13th December

President Macron has turned to a fellow centrist, and one of France's most experienced politicians, to extricate the country from its crisis of government.

But if François Bayrou commands plenty of respect across the political spectrum, it is hard to see how he can avoid the same man-traps that felled his predecessor Michel Barnier.

Appointed by the president as the constitution dictates, the prime minister can nonetheless only function with the support of parliament.

And as the National Assembly is crippled by the same three-bloc impasse as it has been since July - with no possible change before July 2025 - it would be a rash punter who predicted for Bayrou any degree of success.

Since the fall of Barnier a week ago - after a vote of no confidence supported by left and populist right - Macron has consulted with a range of leaders in the hope of forming a new informal coalition to run the country.

Barnier having been a man of the traditional right, Macron's first instinct was to turn to the traditional left - and efforts initially focused on prising the Socialist Party (PS) from its alliance with the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI).

However as the PS's condition was the adoption of leftwing policies that Macron was unwilling to sanction, he was forced to limit his search to his own inner circle.

Bayrou has been a close ally of the president since before Macron's first stunning election win in 2017. Indeed Bayrou's decision to stand aside as a candidate that year - and rally behind the younger man - created a vital dynamic behind Macron's campaign.

A well-known figure on the political stage for more than 40 years, Bayrou - who is 73 - has run the Modem party, which now has 36 deputies, since its formation in 2007. Before that he was the leader of other centrist incarnations.

His beginnings were in the Chistian Democrat tradition of post-war politics, which in general supported but kept a distance from the larger Gaullist component of the French right, led from the late 1970s by Jacques Chirac.

Bayrou, who was a teacher of classical languages in his 20s, served as education minister from 1993 to 1997. But that was his last meaningful experience of government.

Very briefly in 2017 he was Macron's justice minister, but stepped down after being accused in a party funding scandal.

He was eventually cleared of wrongdoing, but many of his colleagues were convicted. And prosecutors have appealed against his acquittal, meaning he could yet be brought back to court.

An observant Catholic with six children, Bayrou's political base is in the Pyrenean city of Pau where he has been mayor since 2014. He speaks the local Bearnese language and is a strong believer in decentralisation.

Bayrou has run for the presidency three times, as standard-bearer of the centre. He was closest to victory in 2007, when he came third with nearly 19% of the vote. He then angered the future winner Nicolas Sarkozy by coming out in support of the Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal.

When the only possible means of survival for a minority government is to build bridges on left and right, Bayrou has the advantage of having passable relations with both sides.

His backing for Royal and then François Hollande in 2012 has established a certain trust among the Socialists. But his views on debt - and the need to bring it down - help him on the right.

Interestingly his relationship with Marine Le Pen of the populist right is also respectful. In the past he has helped her collect the sponsorships needed to run for the presidency, arguing that it would be an affront to democracy if the leader of the most popular party could not stand.

Similar sentiments led to support for Le Pen, when the prosecutor in her own party funding trial (a similar case to his own) recently demanded she be declared ineligible for public office.

This may mean that Bayrou can avoid an automatic censure from the populist right.

But Le Pen's National Rally has also warned that if the new prime minister is "Barnier with another face" it will not hesitate to bring him down.

According to France's veteran political commentator Alain Duhamel, Bayrou is an independent-minded and highly experienced figure who - though allied to Macron - will not hesitate to exert his power at Hotel Matignon, his official residence.

"He will not be easily disciplined," said Duhamel. "And he will tilt policy more towards the left."

France's crisis of government - the most serious in the Fifth Republic - has led to a major shift in power, away from the Elysée and towards the prime minister and parliament.

"The last time we had a situation like this was the (post-war) Fourth Republic when presidents had very little power," said constitutional expert Christophe Boutin.

"Today again, power rests with the groups in parliament who may or may not come together on certain shared policies."

Bayrou's first task will be to name a new government, which could take many days. The composition will be an indication of whether he has managed to build bridges to the Socialists on one side, and Barnier's conservatives on the other.

But very quickly he will have to draw up a new 2025 budget to replace the one abandoned by the Barnier government; and immediately he will be faced with possible rebellions from the left and far-right.

The idea of some parliamentarians of a kind of non-aggression pact - in which government promises not to push through laws without a vote and MPs promise not to vote a motion of censure - has been backed by Macron, who also said he did not want to dissolve the Assembly again before the end of his term in 2027.

But critics say such a deal would be a licence for inertia, with no possible agreement likely on such important issues as bringing down the country's spiralling debt.

UN Security Council ‘remains paralyzed’ by US – Russia

14 Dec, 2024

The US has repeatedly abused its veto power on the UN Security Council, rendering the global body incapable of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

The statement came after the UN General Assembly adopted two resolutions on the war in Gaza, one of which called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas – and was similar to a document earlier blocked by the US at the Security Council. Unlike resolutions passed by the Security Council, those adopted by the General Assembly are legally non-binding.

The measure passed on Wednesday called for “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire,” as well “or the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.” The second document confirmed “full support” for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), and “deplored” Israel’s legislation that banned the agency’s work in the West Bank and Gaza.

In a statement on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the ceasefire resolution “largely repeated the content” of a draft that was vetoed by the US at the Security Council last month.

“Once again, since the start of the unprecedented escalation of violence and bloodshed in the Arab-Israeli conflict, it is the UN General Assembly that is adopting the urgently needed resolutions,” the Foreign Ministry said on Friday. The call for a truce and access to humanitarian aid are “moral imperatives in the current catastrophic circumstances,” it added.

“The UN Security Council – the main body tasked with maintaining international peace and security – remains paralyzed as a result of the use of the veto power by Washington (six times since the beginning of the current crisis),” the ministry wrote on its website.

The US and Israel have argued that an immediate cessation of hostilities would only benefit Hamas, and have accused the Palestinian armed group of sabotaging the negotiations. “It would be shameful and wrong if the General Assembly voted today to vindicate Hamas’ cynical strategy of stalling and obstruction,” US envoy to the UN, Robert Wood, said in a statement explaining Wednesday’s vote.

Israel has long accused UNRWA of covertly aiding Hamas and other militants.

"Despite the overwhelming evidence we submitted to the UN that substantiate Hamas’ infiltration of UNRWA, the UN did nothing to rectify the situation,” Israel’s envoy to the UN, Danny Danon, wrote on X last month.

UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini described Israel’s decision to block the operations of the agency as an “ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to Palestine refugees.”

Nearly 45,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israel’s operation in Gaza, according to local authorities. The war broke out on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and allied groups carried out a surprise attack on Israeli cities, killing some 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, around 100 of whom are believed to be still held in Gaza.

Nancy Pelosi hospitalized in Europe

13 Dec, 2024

Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been admitted to a hospital in Luxembourg while on a congressional trip to Europe, according to her office.

Pelosi, 84, was in Luxembourg with a bipartisan delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the WWII Battle of the Bulge.

The California Democrat “sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” her office said in a statement, adding that she was “receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.”

According to the statement, Pelosi will be “unable to attend” the remainder of the events scheduled for the congressional delegation, but “looks forward to returning home to the US soon.”

There have been unconfirmed reports that Pelosi may have fallen and broken her hip, which would require surgery.

She was reportedly one of the key players who, in July, pressured then-President Joe Biden to drop out of the re-election race in July, which allowed the Democrats to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris instead.

Pelosi has represented San Francisco on Capitol Hill for 37 years and is one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington. She was the first woman to be elected speaker of the House and held the gavel for four sessions of Congress (2007-2011 and 2019-2023).

Islamic Cleric Condemns Plea Bargain, Presidential Pardon, Says It’s Against Sincere Justice Dispensation

By Shojobi Abisola

Dec 14, 2024

The Oyo State Missioner and Chief Imam of the Ansarud-Deen Society, Dr. Bashir Olanrewaju (Elesin Meta), has condemned the policy of plea bargain and presidential pardon, which are part of the Nation’s judicial system, saying they are against sincerity in justice dispensation, which according to him, should be scrapped.

He stated this in his sermon on Friday during the 70th Anniversary and Law Week of the Ibadan Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), held at the Ansaru-Deen Mosque, Oke Ado, Ibadan.

He maintained that the two legal systems rather than advancing justice dispensation, is further corrupting it and encouraging vices.

Addressing the congregants led by the NBA Ibadan Branch Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Lawal, on the theme: “Justice, Trust and Doing the Right Thing”, the Missioner said that “justice is what is done right among human beings, which God has made this compulsory and commanded Justice among leaders, noting that righteousness is to be added to worship to attain justice.

According to him, “There should not be discrimination between the rich and the poor while dispensing justice or awarding punishment. Don’t favour one person against the other. If any Judge or lawyer does that, that is deceit (abosi). This brings my worry about the clause of plea bargain put in the law. It is not good for our judiciary.

“Someone is arrested for stealing very huge money, and you tell him that he is wicked. ‘This is too much now’. And then you ask him how much he can pay and go away with the rest. And he is free. They did another one recently. That is presidential pardon. Because you belong, ok, we will pardon you. Ah! This is horrible.

“There will be judgment in heaven. All this amounts to eating fire and swallowing it. On the day of judgment, there won’t be shoe; there won’t be clothing and everybody will be naked. A baby born in a day with black hair on his head, will grow grey hair immediately.

“With this presidential pardon, you are just encouraging unscrupulous people to grow more in their iniquities. Muslim Judges and lawyers should take heed to this because we are going to give account on the last day”, he pleaded.

The Chief Imam pleaded with business people “to be fair and not cheat. Husbands with more than one wife must do justice among them. Parents must ensure justice among their children. And there must be justice among humans, especially our politicians. If there is no injustice, Judges themselves will rest and their dockets will be light”, the Missioner pleaded, after which he prayed fervently for the immediate ex- Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kayode Ariwoola.

Quoting from Chapter 4 verse 15 and Chapter 5 verse 35 of the Quran, the Chief Imam urged Nigerians to refrain from temptation of flesh to distract them.

“Don’t allow flesh to distract you because of hatred or misunderstanding. Don’t allow injustice between two warring people in inheritance, property acquisition. Allow justice between two litigants. You jurists and lawyers should be there to do justice and settle grievances. You are the ones to do this”.

Wike Performance Made Tinubu Nominate Him As FCT Minister – Akpabio

13 December 2024

By Udeze Ekene

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said President Bola Tinubu appointed Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) because of his capacity.

Senator Akpabio said despite Wike being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Tinubu was pleased with his performance when he was Rivers State Governor.

He stated this on Friday during a book launch in marking Wike’s 57th birthday, in Port Harcourt.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said Wike in two years has transformed the capital city with projects.

“Let me tell you why you were nominated into the FEC by President Tinubu despite being an opposition politician.

“Your performance, as a local government chairman, Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Government, Minister and two-term governor gave you the job.

“You have made us proud as the FCT minister. You have turned Abuja into a model city befitting the capital of a country. You are a very committed public officer who has no room for excuses on any given task.

“In less than two years, you have turned Abuja into a huge construction site,” he said.

He commended the FCT Minister for his life of service to the nation in different capacities.

He described Wike as a leader with purpose who is dedicated to uplifting communities.

“Today we gather to celebrate not just the years in your life, but the life in your years. We have come to honour not just the duration of your life but the donation of your life and the countless ways you’ve enriched the lives of the people around you.

“Born in the tumultuous year of 1967, when the fabric of our nation was being tested in the fires of conflict, you emerged, my dear Wike, not in the safety of calm waters but amid the storm itself. You might have chosen to arrive in more tranquil times, but instead, you bravely came forth into the fray.

“It is perhaps this very fortitude that has shaped your character, allowing you to rise like an eagle, soaring high above the tempests that beset us.

“As a two-term governor, you have been a leader of the people, a visionary who acts with purpose, and a friend whose care for others knows no bounds. Your dedication to uplifting communities, as a Governor and now as an Honourable Minister, has left an indelible mark upon our nation’s history.

“The bridges you have constructed—both of steel and of spirit—stand as testaments to your commitment to progress and unity. I recognized the fire within you long before you stepped into the public arena; you were, indeed, a secret waiting to be unveiled for the nation to behold.

“Your contributions to the political landscape of Nigeria, particularly during your governorship, shine like a beacon of hope. Your charismatic leadership and staunch advocacy for the rights of your constituents have focused on the pillars of infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

“Your passion for sports, particularly football, and your commitment to nurturing the talents of our youth reflect your unwavering belief in the potential of the next generation. You have earned a reputation as a leader of uncompromising integrity, speaking truth in every circumstance even when the winds of injustice howl around you like a tempest,” he stated.

Senator Akpabio also commended Wike‘s family for their support to the FCT Minister.

“Let us not forget, on this auspicious day, the steadfast support of your beloved wife. She has stood beside you through trials and triumphs alike, her strength and encouragement complementing your leadership in extraordinary ways. Together, you exemplify a partnership that inspires countless souls, proving that love and unity can elevate a leader’s impact to unparalleled heights.

“Now, let us take a moment to appreciate your infectious spirit, which has the power to lighten the gravest of discussions with your wit and charm. It Is Hard Time To Demolish Someone’s House – Tinubu’s Aide To Wike

13 December 2024

By Udeze Ekene

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement, Abiodun Essiet, has condemned the ongoing demolition of houses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by the Nyesom Wike-led administration.

The Tinubu’s aide on Community Engagement (North Central, including Abuja) said the citizens of Nigeria are faced with harsh economic realities.

Mrs. Abiodun noted that demolishing or taking over anybody’s house with the current state of hardship in the country was uncalled for.

In a brief post on her X handle, President Tinubu’s aide called for negotiation and deliberate dialogue.

“This is a hard time for someone’s house to be demolished or taken over. The Lands Department of Federal Capital Territory Administration needs to engage the citizens in deliberate dialogue,” she wrote.

Naija News reported that Wike had on Thursday said no amount of media or activist pressure, or blackmail would make him stop demolishing marked houses.

He stated this while handing over vehicles to security agencies in Abuja.

“Let me use this opportunity to tell Nigerians and residents of Abuja, we are not afraid of blackmailing.

“In fact, you cannot be in this kind of position and say you cannot be blackmailed particularly as regards this Abuja. There are so many land grabbers. Some of us have come to put our feet down. Let heaven fall. It is even better that heaven comes down now so that we would not be fasting again to go to heaven,” he said.

Sokoto Gov commissions Islamiyya School, Mosque

By Suliyat Tella

14 December 2024

• Receives 2024 Hajj Report, Vows To Improve Exercise

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has commissioned the reconstructed Tahsinul Quran Islamiyya School and a mosque, with a call to the surrounding communities to safeguard the project from being vandalised. He said the project was in fulfillment of his earlier pledge to the Runjin Sambo communities to rebuild the school.

The governor revealed that his administration has awarded several contracts for the construction of Islamiyya schools and mosques, in addition to the renovation of various mosques across the state.

“This reconstruction of Tahsinul Quran is just one out of many projects we have awarded, most of which had since been completed.

“This project is part of our modest efforts to create a conducive teaching and learning environment in this school. “It is generally believed that for sound and quality education to be imparted on the children, a conducive learning environment must be provided,” he said.

Meanwhile, the governor has reiterated his administration’s determination to continue to improve on Hajj exercises in the state. He stated this while receiving the 2024 Hajj report from the leader of the state’s Hajj delegation and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Tukur Bala Bodinga.

According to him, new measures would be introduced by his administration to ensure that subsequent Hajj exercises become more successful than the previous ones.

“The last Hajj operation in the state was indeed a success story but we would make sure that we improve in terms of good arrangements and welfare of pilgrims both at home and in the holy land.

“I commend the members of the State’s Hajj delegation and officials of the state Pilgrims Welfare Agency for the good arrangements and also thank our pilgrims for the orderly manner they have conducted themselves both here and in the holy land,” he said.

Earlier, Bodinga commended the support given to the 2024 Hajj Committee by the state government.

No word from Tengku Zafrul on purported plans to quit UMNO, says Ahmad Zahid

BERNAMA

14-12- 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today confirmed that he has not received any notification from Supreme Council member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz regarding his purported move to join PKR.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said so far Tengku Zafrul has not approached him to discuss the matter.

“So, we can’t confirm this,“ he told reporters after attending Kolej Ketengah’s 4th convocation ceremony at the World Trade Centre here.

He was responding to media reports claiming that Tengku Zafrul, who is also the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, is set to quit UMNO and join PKR to play a key role in the Selangor government in the future.

Ahmad Zahid said parties within the Unity Government should refrain from recruiting members from other parties within the alliance to maintain harmony.

Therefore, he advised all parties within the Unity Government to prioritise preserving unity and the alliance’s interests over personal agendas.

“Whatever personal agenda one may have must be set aside if the individual wants their party to be prioritised.

“If personal interests are placed above all else, we leave it to the members to judge the individual’s integrity,“ he said.

When asked about the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the handling of issues related to the sovereignty of Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks and South Ledge, Ahmad Zahid said the government has entrusted the Attorney-General to take further action.

The RCI report had previously recommended, among other things, that criminal investigations be initiated against former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad under Section 415(b) of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 417 and also under Section 418 of the same code.

Kuantan police and TNB pull the plug on 10 illegal gambling hubs

14 Dec 2024

KUANTAN, Dec 14 — The police and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) disconnected the electricity supply to 10 premises involved in illegal gambling in the district, during a three-day operation starting Thursday.

Kuantan District police chief, ACP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu, stated that the measure was taken to disrupt illegal online gambling and unlicensed lottery sales, to ensure these premises would not resume their activities.

He explained that the disconnections were authorised by court orders and covered Kempadang, Tanjung Lumpur, Balok, Sungai Isap, Gambang, and Panching.

These premises were frequently disguised as prawn farming ponds, gadget shops, or top-up service providers, he added.

“This electricity disconnection operation involves cases that have already been judged in court. Most of the premises were involved in online gambling activities such as online gambling top-ups, illegal lottery sales, with some even offering gambling on-site,” he said.

“Since the beginning of 2024, the Kuantan Police have submitted 33 requests to TNB for electricity disconnections in such cases. So far, we have received 13 approvals.

“During the three-day operation, 10 premises have had their power cut,” he told the media after leading the operation at several premises in the district today.

Wan Mohd Zahari said the disconnection was carried out under Section 21A of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 (Amended 2001), and the police will continue to work with TNB to target such premises.

“I strongly urge the owners of premises in Kuantan to ensure their tenants are not involved in illegal activities, especially gambling,” he said. — Bernama

Sabah’s SAPP quits Perikatan, claims Opposition pact insists on putting West Malaysian candidates in upcoming state polls

By Malay Mail

14 Dec 2024

KOTA KINABALU, Dec 14 – The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) today confirmed its withdrawal from Perikatan Nasional (PN), citing conflicts over the upcoming state election.

SAPP president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee said the party disagrees with PN’s insistence on fielding candidates from parties based in West Malaysia.

“This position contradicts SAPP’s long-standing stand and policy that all 73 state constituencies should only be contested by local Sabah parties,” he said in a statement here.

“This SAPP stand is consistent with Malaysia Agreement 1963 and autonomy for Sabah,” it added

“We cannot compromise on our commitment to ensuring that the elections for the Sabah legislative assembly remain exclusively under the purview of local parties, free from interference by national-based parties from peninsular Malaysia.”

Yong said the decision was made during the party’s supreme council meeting on November 23 and communicated to the national opposition pact’s headquarters last month.

SAPP is also part of the ruling Sabah coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), that is part of the national unity government.

The GRS coalition, led by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, is aiming to contest all 73 state seats.

“In fact, one of the key motions we have submitted to the GRS supreme council to deliberate is Sabah’s autonomy, which means GRS should field candidates in all 73 state constituencies.

“This is important in upholding Sabah’s rights under the MA63 and reflects the fervent aspirations of Sabahans for a government that embraces true federalism.”

Sarawak to offer free finance, accounting studies in all state-owned universities from 2026

14 Dec 2024

KUCHING, Dec 14 — Finance and accounting studies will be among the core disciplines offered under the free tertiary education policy at all Sarawak-owned universities starting in 2026, says State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said these fields are crucial for managing and auditing the financial aspects of Sarawak’s expanding green economy, particularly in carbon trading and environmental sustainability.

“As long as you are eligible, you will receive free education to study finance and accounting because we need experts to audit our carbon, calculate carbon, and assess other intangible elements. These disciplines will adhere to international standards,” he said.

Speaking at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Malaysia stakeholders reception on Friday night, he emphasised the vital role of accountants in ensuring transparency and proper valuation within these emerging sectors.

An additional portfolio for accountants is sustainability. It is no longer just about the bottom line, it is about embracing a new portfolio,” he said, adding that accountants’ responsibilities have expanded significantly with the focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) frameworks. — Bernama
