Taliban leader declares: ‘No need for western laws’ in Afghanistan, says ‘democracy is dead’

By Sudeshna Ghoshal

31 Mar 2025

Taliban leader declares: ‘No need for western laws’ in Afghanistan, says ‘democracy is dead’(AFP)

-------

Taliban leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, recently said there was no need for Western laws in Afghanistan and that democracy was dead as long as sharia laws are in effect.

“There is no need for laws that originate from the West. We will create our own laws,” Akhundzada said, speaking in Pashto, while emphasising the importance of Islamic laws, reported AP.

Hibatullah Akhundzada made the comments in a sermon during Eid Al-Fitr, in the southern city of Kandahar's Eidgah Mosque. The Taliban government's chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, shared the 50-minute audio message on X.

Ever since the Taliban seized control over Afghanistan in 2021, Akhundzada took a stronger hand in directing policy despite some officials initially promising a more moderate rule.

The Taliban's version of sharia has resulted in bans on Afghan women and girls, restricting their access to education, many jobs, and most public spaces. These measures have isolated the Taliban internationally, despite their diplomatic connections with countries like China and the United Arab Emirates, recent reports show.

Akhundzada on Sunday criticized the West, saying non-believers had united against Muslims and that the US and others were united in their hostility toward Islam, citing the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, reported AP.

Democracy had come to an end in Afghanistan and sharia was in effect, the Taliban leader added, stating that supporters of democracy were trying to separate the people from the Taliban government.

The Taliban have no credible opposition inside or outside the country, but some senior figures within the administration have criticised the leadership's decision-making process and concentration of power in Akhundzada's circle.

Some Taliban want greater engagement with the international community and scrapping harsher policies to attract more outside support. In recent months, however, there has been increased engagement between the Taliban and the U.S. under President Donald Trump, mostly because of prisoner exchanges and releases, reported AP.

Following a brutal civil war, the Taliban established strict Islamic rule but were ousted by a US-led invasion in 2001. They quickly regained power, seizing nearly all of Afghanistan following the US withdrawal in 2021.

While the war officially ended with their takeover, the Taliban now face ongoing attacks from the Islamic State and an anti-Taliban insurgency in certain regions.

Beed Mosque Explosion: 2 Arrested After Blast At Local Mosque, Probe On

31 March 2025

Explosion at Mosque in Maharashtra's Beed | Photo: PTI

------------

Following the blast at a mosque in Maharashtra's Beed, the police have arrested two people. While no casualties have been reported as of now, officials have launched a probe to assess the reason and motive behind this blast.

As per reports, the blast at the mosque was triggered by gelatin sticks. Police officials added that the accused entered the mosque from the back and allegedly placed the gelatin sticks.

As per reports, the accused - Vijay Rama Gavhane (22) and Shriram Ashok Sagade (24) are residents of Ardha Masla village. Police have suspected that the duo used the explosives procured for their work.

In response to the explosion in Beed, India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen spokesperson Waris Pathan has demanded that the accused be charged under the UAPA act.

"Who encourages them? They get encouraged by the hate speeches that BJP leaders give every day. The government should impose strict UAPA laws against the accused in this case, their case should be heard in fast-track court and they should get severe punishment. Those BJP leaders who keep talking such nonsense every day should also be punished... Only then will we be able to prevent such incidents from happening in the future," he told news agency ANI.

More outlaws killed than civilians or security men: Centre for Research and Security Studies

Ikram Junaidi

March 31, 2025

ISLAMABAD: Fatalities among outlaws surpassed civilian and security losses in the first quarter of 2025, the first time this has happened during the last 12 years.

In its report for the first quarter of 2025, the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) also claimed that overall violence dropped by 13 per cent as compared to the last quarter of 2024.

The period under review saw some promising trends in the security landscape of Pakistan such as fatalities of militants and insurgents outnumbered the cumulative losses of civilians and security forces personnel for the first time in 12 years. Notably, less fatal losses among civilians and security forces personnel, compared to the fourth quarter of the year 2024, were observed and nearly 13pc reduction in overall violence was reported.

“Despite progress, KP and Balochistan remain epicentres of violence, accounting for 98pc of all fatalities, with attacks growing bolder and militant tactics evolving — including the unprecedented hijacking of Jaffar Express. Projections warn of over 3,600 fatalities by year-end if current trends persist, potentially making 2025 one of Pakistan’s deadliest years,” it stated.

During the first quarter of 2025, the country witnessed 897 violence-linked fatalities and 542 injuries among civilians, security personnel and outlaws.

Majority of the fatalities and incidents of violence were recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, with both accounting for over 98pc of all fatalities and 94pc incidents, cumulatively.

Individually, while KP suffered over 63pc of all violence-related fatalities, compared to Q4 2024, it witnessed a promising 18pc reduction in violence.

Balochistan suffered 35pc of all fatalities in the period under review. However, when compared to the last quarter, it recorded an alarming 15pc surge in violence.

Against 495 outlaws eliminated, civilians and security personnel suffered 402 fatalities, which account for nearly 19pc fewer losses as compared to outlaws.

Their combined losses accounted for nearly 45pc of all fatalities compared to outlaws’ making up over 55pc of total recorded this quarter. It is for the first time in 12 years that the number of outlaws’ fatalities surpassed the combined fatalities of civilians and security forces.

Equally positive, the civilians and security personnel suffered almost 50pc and 13pc less fatal losses, respectively, in the period under review compared to Q4 2024. In contrast, the fatalities of outlaws including militants and insurgents increased by over 20pc.

Based on the claims and newspaper reports, the number of fatalities from violence claimed by the militant and insurgent outfits appeared to have dropped in Q1 2025 from 316 in Q4 2024 to 229, marking a 28pc decrease.

Over 500 people suffered violence (313 deaths and 217 injuries) during the holy month of Ramazan with various banned groups, including the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), TTP-Gul Bahadur Group, IS-Khorasan, BLA, and Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army, claiming responsibility for these attacks.

Palestinian Minister of Endowments: The occupation refuses to hand over Ibrahimi Mosque during Eid al-Fitr

31 Mar 2025

The Palestinian Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, Sheikh Muhammad Mustafa Najm, announced that the Israeli occupation authorities refused to hand over the Ibrahimi Mosque, including all its corridors, courtyards, and sections, to worshippers on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. This is the sixth time during the month of Ramadan 234.

The minister described this refusal as a "blatant and unprecedented attack" on the mosque, a provocation of Muslim sentiments, and a lack of respect for the sanctity of religious rituals. He also emphasized that this measure is consistent with the occupation's policy aimed at controlling the Ibrahimi Mosque and transforming it into a Talmudic synagogue, which constitutes a violation of Islamic sanctities and Waqf property.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Issues related to the escalating Israeli terror attacks on Palestinian land as Muslims celebrate Ramadan and Aidilfitri have been among the topics of discussion between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Anwar, through a post on his Facebook page, said the matter was raised during a phone call between him and his good friend yesterday evening.

I stress the urgent need to consider other plans to stop this violence. Alhamdulillah, Erdogan reiterated his firm stance to continue to stand in solidarity with our brothers in Palestine,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation for the development of bilateral relations between the two countries, which are increasingly strengthening, especially following his visit to Malaysia the other day.

“In this conversation, I also received an invitation from Erdogan to visit Turkiye. Hopefully the close friendship between the two (leaders) which is currently blossoming will continue to be strong and bring benefits to the people of both countries, God willing,” he said.

Muslims mark Eid 'tinged with sadness and joy'

By Farid Farid

March 31 2025

Nearly one million Muslims across Australia are marking the end of Ramadan with prayer, family visits and sweets.

But for many it is a sombre reminder that families and friends in other parts of the world, particularly Gaza, are suffering.

Eid-al-Fitr, or Eid, is one of the most significant celebrations on the Islamic calendar, marking the end of the month-long, dawn-to-dusk fasting month of Ramadan.

At one of Australia's largest and most historic mosques in Lakemba in southwest Sydney, children wore their finest Eid clothes while adults greeted each other with hugs and kisses.

Gamel Kheir, secretary of the Lebanese Muslim Association which is the custodian of the mosque, said "the sacrosanct occasion" had been marked by "conflicted feelings" as the onslaught on Gaza continues.

"There's a moral crisis in the community over what we're feeling," he told AAP, fresh from celebrating with extended family feasting on Lebanese savoury delicacies and sweets.

The death toll in the blockaded enclave has risen to more than 50,000 killed including 15,000 children after the ceasefire was broken earlier this month in renewed Israeli bombardment with the United Nations calling for more aid to get through.

"Ramadan is about giving, togetherness, kindness and looking for people who are vulnerable," he said last week, while praising a cafe putting on free meals for 80 vulnerable women every Monday during the fasting month.

Could Donald Trump actually serve a third term as US President? What we know

Mar 31, 2025

Donald Trump made headlines again on Sunday after he reiterated that he might pursue a third term as US president, even though such a move would challenge the constitutional two-term limit established by the 22nd Amendment.

"I have had more people ask me to have a third term, which in a way is a fourth term because the other election, the 2020 election was totally rigged. I don’t want to talk about a third term now because no matter how you look at it, we’ve got a long time to go,” Trump said, who would be 82 by the end of his potential second term.

Though a third term for any US president would typically be unthinkable, Donald Trump has never followed political norms. Throughout his time in office, he has repeatedly tested the boundaries of presidential power and has shown a willingness to bend or even break the law to remain in office.

Any attempt by Trump to remain in office beyond this limit would be legally questionable, and it remains uncertain how seriously he intends to pursue the idea.

When asked if one option could be having vice president JD Vance run for president and then "pass the baton" back to him, Trump acknowledged, "Well, that’s one. But there are others too. There are others." However, he refused to elaborate further.

Nine US presidents have assumed office without being elected, all having previously served as vice presidents before stepping in due to the death or resignation of their predecessors. This historical precedent highlights alternative paths to the presidency beyond direct election. However, whether a two-term president could return to office via the vice presidency remains a legal gray area, The Conversation reported.

The 22nd Amendment restricts a president to two elected terms but does not explicitly prevent them from serving as vice president. Meanwhile, the 12th Amendment states that anyone “constitutionally ineligible” for the presidency cannot be vice president. It is unclear whether this applies to a two-term president or only to basic eligibility requirements such as age, citizenship, and residency.

If this issue were taken to the US Supreme Court, their ruling could determine whether a Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 might evolve into a Vance-Trump ticket in 2028. If elected under such a scenario, Vance could resign, allowing Trump to assume the presidency once again—a legal loophole that, if upheld, could redefine presidential succession.

The political leaders reacted differently to Trump's remark with the right-wing leaders favouring the US president while the Democrats called it an effort to "dismantle democracy".

“This is yet another escalation in his clear effort to take over the government and dismantle our democracy. If Congressional Republicans believe in the Constitution, they will go on the record opposing Trump’s ambitions for a third term,” Democrat and representative Daniel Goldman said.

Kayla Thompson, a 30-year-old former paralegal in Wisconsin, said she would “absolutely” like Trump to serve another term. “America needs him. America is headed in the right direction and, if he doesn’t do it, we’re probably headed backwards," she said.

Eid-El-Fitr: Atiku Urges Leaders To Show Compassion

By Joy Anigbogu

Mar 31, 2025

LAGOS – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and around the world on the successful completion of the Ramadan fasting, urging leaders to show compassion.

“While the Ramadan season encouraged charity to the less privileged, it becomes imperative on leaders to make sure that after Ramadan, governments initiate interventions that will ensure the well being and welfare of the people is sustained.

“It is important to call the attention of those in positions of authority to the practices of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that teach about the obligations of leadership to the people.

The former vice president also reminded the Muslim faithful that the celebration of Eid-elFitr “should be an opportunity to remind ourselves to continue to intensify the good deeds that was embraced during Ramadan, and for the people to continue to pray for progress in our private lives and our dear country in general.”

Myanmar’s Earthquake: A Crisis Built on Oppression

By Harry Myo Lin

Mar 31, 2025

On March 28, as Myanmar’s Muslims knelt in prayer during Ramadan’s holiest Friday, the ground beneath them split open. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake tore through central Myanmar, flattening neighborhoods in Mandalay and burying entire communities. Two days later, survivors dig through rubble with their hands, hospitals lie in ruins, and the world’s silence is deafening. This is not just a natural disaster—it is the culmination of decades of systemic discrimination, militarized neglect, and global apathy.

The quake struck at the precise moment mosques were most crowded. Hundreds died instantly under collapsing roofs—structures the governments had long forbidden worshippers to reinforce. “We pleaded for years to repair cracks, to add beams,” said a Sagaing imam, his voice trembling as he gestured to a mound of debris where his mosque once stood. “They said no. Now my congregation is gone.” Nearly 450 deaths are confirmed, but survivors whisper the true toll is far higher. These were not random tragedies. They were political choices. Myanmar’s military junta, which has systematically targeted religious minorities for decades, turned places of worship into death traps. The earthquake merely finished the job.

There are no rescue teams, cranes, or hope in the aftermath. The junta, accused of ethnic cleansing and war crimes, has abandoned its people. Youth volunteers who once mobilized during crises have fled conscription or been jailed. “We have shovels and desperation—that’s all,” said a 24-year-old former teacher digging through the ruins of a monastery where hundreds of monks perished. Hospitals, already gutted by the regime’s neglect, lack even basic supplies. “We’re using torn curtains as bandages,” a nurse confessed, her hands stained with blood. The junta’s legacy is a nation stripped of infrastructure and empathy, where disaster response is an act of solitary defiance.

Rally to protest Israel's attack on Palestine takes place on 'Land Day' in Tokyo

March 31, 2025

TOKYO -- Protesters took to the streets of Shibuya March 30, recognized as Palestine's "Land Day," calling for an end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and massacres in the Gaza Strip.

Participants held Palestinian flags and raised their voices in protest, chanting "Do not break the ceasefire" and "Give back Palestinian land."

Land Day commemorates the events of March 30, 1976, when six Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli troops over the forced confiscation of land. Every year on this day, resistance movements take place in various locations to remember the incident.

Meanwhile, the monthlong Ramadan has ended in Islamic countries and Gaza, and the Muslim people are celebrating the festive period that also started March 30.

Hamid Karzai calls for lifting Education and Job Restrictions on Afghanistan’s women in Eid Message

By Fidel Rahmati

March 31, 2025

Former President Hamid Karzai, in an Eid al-Fitr greeting, stressed the need to reopen educational centers for girls and remove work restrictions on women, viewing closed schools and universities as major obstacles to national progress.

In a message posted on his official social media platform X, Karzai congratulated the arrival of Eid al-Fitr and called for the resumption of girls’ education along with the creation of job opportunities for women.

He emphasized that continued limitations on women’s education and employment pose a serious barrier to Afghanistan’s development. According to Karzai, only through science and knowledge can the nation’s youth free themselves from dependency and work toward self-sufficiency.

“The continued restrictions are a serious obstacle to the country’s development,” Karzai stated. “The sons and daughters of this land can only liberate the country from dependency and move toward self-reliance through education and knowledge.”

Richard Bennett calls for Justice and Human Rights in Afghanistan’s Eid message

By Fidel Rahmati

March 31, 2025

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, released a message on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, wishing the people of Afghanistan peace, dignity, and hope.

In his message, stated on the social media platform X on Sunday, March 30, Richard Bennett expressed his best wishes for justice and human rights, hoping that Eid would bring joy, resilience, and strength to the people.

His message comes at a time when Afghanistan continues to face a severe human rights crisis. Since the Taliban regained control of the country, widespread restrictions have been imposed on women and girls. The Taliban have removed women from public life, barred girls from education beyond grade six, and prohibited women from working in international organizations.

These actions have intensified the suppression of fundamental freedoms and have drawn strong reactions from human rights organizations and the international community. Many global bodies have condemned these restrictions and called for the restoration of basic rights for Afghanistan’s citizens, especially women.

Gelatin sticks used to trigger blast in Beed mosque; 2 held

By Shrinivas Deshpande

Mar 31, 2025

According to a senior police officer, the incident followed a heated argument during Sayyad Badshah’s Urus celebration on Saturday evening. The accused, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, engaged in a dispute and threatened to demolish the mosque

A moderate-intensity explosion, triggered using gelatin sticks, damaged the interior of a mosque in Beed district’s Ardha Masla village in Georai tehsil at around 2:30am on Sunday. The police have arrested two suspects and detained two others in the incident.

The arrested accused Vijay Rama Gavhane (22) and Shriram Ashok Sagade (24) are both residents of Ardha Masla village. The accused are involved in the well-digging business that often involves controlled blast methods using gelatin sticks. Police suspect the duo used the explosives originally procured for their work.

Mecca Mosque, located near Sayyad Badshah Dargah, had recently undergone restoration work. While no one was injured, the explosion caused cracks in the mosque’s flooring and structure, said police.

Islamic Ninja Fighters and the Syrian Janus

Osama Esber

March 31, 2025

The General Security Administration in Syria has issued an executive order prohibiting its personnel from wearing masks. This decision follows the widespread use of masks by Islamic groups that took power after the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. While reports indicate that the order will initially be enforced in Damascus, it remains unclear whether it will extend to other cities across Syria.

Syrians are living in a state of fear, particularly in the coastal regions and other areas home to Christians and minority groups, in the aftermath of Assad’s fall and the atrocities committed against civilians in Western Syria. Members of armed radical Islamic factions that have seized power continue to conceal their identities by wearing masks.

Masked armed men first appeared in the city of Idlib in northern Syria following the rise of the al-Nusra Front, a group that originated from al-Qaeda and later rebranded as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, claiming to have severed ties with the terrorist organization. This group led the “Operation Deterrence of Aggression,” which _within the framework of a secret international and regional agreement _ultimately led to the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the appointment of Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, as the current president under the name Ahmad al-Shar’a.

The narrative on Syrian social media highlights the two identities of the president. One, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, is depicted as a fierce leader, known for wielding an iron fist against those considered remnants of al-Assad’s regime. The other, Ahmad al-Shar’a, represents the pragmatic political figure, carefully crafted to project a more diplomatic and acceptable image, especially to the West. This duality draws parallels to the Roman myth of Janus, who was depicted with a double-faced head, sometimes bearded, sometimes not, in artistic representations. Al-Julani embodies the backward-facing, militant side, while al-Shar’a represents the forward-facing, political persona. Al-Julani is revered as the “lion of the Sunnis,” a fearless warrior who is unafraid of death and ready to use force to crush the enemies of the Islamic nation. In contrast, Ahmad al-Shar’a, as president, is carefully presented as a civilian leader capable of governance, striving to maintain a politically acceptable persona. This duality illustrates the pragmatism of political Islamist movements in the Middle East, which often shift their tone quickly after seizing power to secure and consolidate it.

On March 7, 8 and 9, the backward face of Syria’s Janus took center stage, unleashing horror in western Syria. Meanwhile, the tragedy caused by the genocides continues to unfold.

Despite the restructuring of armed factions under the banner of the Ministry of Defense, the masks that instilled fear in Idlib -linked to armed robberies, assassinations, and violence against factions containing civilian activists -were never removed. Security personnel continued to wear them, and military parades in Damascus and other Syrian cities after the fall of al-Assad regime featured fighters dressed in black, their faces concealed by masks that left only their eyes visible, reminiscent of Japanese ninjas.

Where is JD Vance's suit? Greenland trip brings back Zelenskyy memes for VP

Mar 31, 2025

Vice President JD Vance's Greenland trip along with Second Lady Usha Vance intensified the diplomatic strife as Vance only repeated Donald Trump's words and asserted that the US would get Greenland. The Greenland trip was supposed to be a solo one for Usha as Trump has been soft-pedaling on Greenland -- in January, Donald Trump Jr visited the island, and now it was the Second Lady's turn. But the pushback from Greenland and Denmark when the visit was announced changed the plan and JD Vance decided to join in. The rest of the plan was chopped and they made a visit to the US military's Pituffuk Space Base.

As Vance was not meeting any official of the country, he appeared in a black outfit but social media users did not miss the chance to troll Vance. Parallels were drawn between JD Vance's attire with that of Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy who was criticized for not wearing a suit for his meeting with President Donald Trump.

The Trump-Zelenskyy meeting turned into a shouting match with Vance asking Zelenskyy whether he thanked Donald Trump for his mediation. After JD Vance's Greenland visit, social media users asked whether JD Vance thanked Greenland for housing the US Army base.

"Trump & JD Vance don't think rules or standards are for people like them. Vance turns up in Greenland not wearing a suit: something they saw as disrespectful from Zelenskyy. And why didn't Vance say "thank you" to the people of Greenland for hosting a US military base since 1951?" one wrote.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland's prime minister says US 'will not get' the island territory

Mar 31, 2025

Greenland's prime minister firmly rejected US President Donald Trump's recent claim that America will take control of the Arctic island, asserting that the self-governing Danish territory decides its own future.

"President Trump says that the United States 'will get Greenland.' Let me be clear: The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future," Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday.

His comments came in response to Trump's latest remarks in an NBC News interview, where the US president suggested that military force was not off the table in his push to annex Greenland.

"I think there's a good possibility that we could do it without military force," Trump said in the interview on Saturday. "This is world peace, this is international security.” However, he added, “I don’t take anything off the table.”

Trump’s USAID cuts hinder US response to Myanmar disaster

Mar 31, 2025

The United States has yet to provide significant assistance, with its response lagging far behind China, Russia and India, which have rushed emergency teams and supplies to Myanmar after the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

Even as President Donald Trump continued dismantling the US agency for international development (USAID), he assured that American help was on the way after the earthquake struck Myanmar’s densely populated central region on Friday, leaving more than 1,700 dead. As per the country’s military government, the death toll is expected to rise further.

Despite Trump’s statement, the US response has been slow. A three-person USAID assessment team is not expected to arrive in Myanmar until Wednesday, sources familiar with the deployment efforts told the New York Times. People with experience in past disaster relief missions said that the delay is unusual and a stark contrast to previous US aid responses.

On Sunday, the US embassy in Myanmar announced that the country would provide up to $2 million in humanitarian assistance, to be distributed through aid groups operating in the quake struck nation. However, many key systems required to channel this aid have been severely disrupted by the disaster.

Prayers and tears for Eid in quake-hit Mandalay

March 31, 2025

Hundreds of grieving Muslims gathered for Eid prayers in the street in Mandalay on Monday, the death and destruction of Myanmar’s huge earthquake casting a pall of anguish over the occasion.

The watching women were the first to weep. A tear, a sniffle, a cry. The emotion spread among hundreds of men lined up in the street outside two mosques where 20 of their fellow believers died.

The Muslims of Mandalay gathered for a sombre first prayer of the Eid al-Fitr festival, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, three days after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck during Friday prayers.

The minaret of the Sajja South mosque in the Muslim neighbourhood of Mawyagiwah crashed to the ground in the quake, killing 14 children and two adults, locals said.

“We believe the souls of children and everyone we know who died have reached Paradise. We believe they were blessed deaths,” she said, breaking down.

Outside the alley leading to the mosques, the Eid worshippers, many wearing the new clothes that are the traditional gift for the festival, lined up on plastic sheeting laid on the road, held in place by bricks.

Down the street from the mosques, a resident said six people were killed when a dessert shop collapsed, as well as two people in a restaurant across the road.

But much of the city appeared unharmed, with traffic on the streets, some restaurants reopening and daytime life beginning to return to normal for many.

Commodities Prices Remain Unaffordable As Muslims Mark Sallah

Sivowaku Abiodun

31-03-2025

Although, Eid-el-Fitr and Easter supposed to be celebrations that comes with wearing the best of clothes, eats the best of meals, merry with families, friends and relatives, however, the harsh economic realities has ensured that Nigerians had to cut down expenses, seek alternatives in the midst of low disposable income, LEADERSHIP Sunday  can now reveal.

Therefore, as Nigerians celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with Easter celebration expected in the next three weeks, the Muslim and Christian communities face the dual challenge of observing these sacred festivals while navigating the country’s harsh economic crisis.

With inflation soaring above 30 per cent and unstable food prices reported to be on a recent decline, traditional means are being adapted to reflect both religious devotion and economic realities.

The federal government had earlier declared tomorrow, Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

In the spirit of the celebration, Nigerians and Muslims alike have expressed that the economic downturn has significantly affected festivities and traditional Eid celebrations.

Although Eid-el-Fitr is not known  for killing rams, there are some Muslims who always slaughter either cows, rams or goats in the spirit of the celebration. However, the price of these proteins is fast becoming prohibitive due to high cost with an average ram now costing between N150,000 to N250,000 while the big ones cost as high as N500,000 and above. The goats, on the other hand, now sell between N90,000 and N350,000 depending on the size and location in the South-West part of Nigeria.  For cows, it is being sold between N500,000 and N1million, hence, some had to go for lesser protein or go for chicken and turkey because they could not afford their choiced animal.

In a chat with a Muslim faithful, Abubakar Alimi cited that basic food items have become the priority over festive luxuries, with some Muslims opting out of animal sacrifice.

Tinubu Charges Nigerians On Love, Charity For Vulnerable Citizens

By Innocent Oweh

Mar 31, 2025

ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu on Sunday urged all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Eid-el-Fitr by demonstrating greater love and compassion, particularly toward the vulnerable, and extending acts of charity to all.

He said this when he joined Muslim faithful at the National Eid Prayer Ground along Airport Road in Abuja to observe Eid-elFitr prayers, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The president, who arrived the prayer ground before 9a.m, was received by top government officials, religious leaders, and dignitaries that gathered in large numbers for the solemn occasion.

Among those who were at the prayer ground were the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. Eid-el-Fitr, one of Islam’s most significant festivals, symbolises the conclusion of Ramadan and is traditionally marked by prayers, acts of charity, and expressions of communal harmony.

How I warned Wike of possible sack if his policies didn’t favour APC in FCT – Tinubu

By Baba Martins

31 Mar 2025

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he threatened the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, that he could lose his position if his policies in Abuja did not favour the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Sunday when Wike led FCT residents on a Sallah visit to the State House, Tinubu commended the minister’s efforts in transforming the capital but noted that certain obstacles needed to be removed to ensure smooth progress.

One such challenge was the inclusion of the FCT under the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which Wike requested to be removed. Tinubu recalled that Wike approached him with the appeal.

“I remember the day Nyesom Wike came to me and said, ‘Please take us out of this problem of TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more’,” Tinubu said.

Lawmaker urges Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu

March 31, 2025

The lawmaker representing Ikeja Constituency 2 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adedamola Kasunmu, has called on Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuring them that the nation’s future holds immense promise.

Speaking at the third edition of a Ramadan lecture held in honor of the late Habibat Mogaji, Kasunmu emphasized the importance of community bonds and the virtues of giving, while also addressing the current economic climate.

The lawmaker acknowledged the challenges Nigerians are facing, stating, “It may seem tough. It may seem bleak, but I know that the future is great, and the future has lots of benefits to come. If only we can just, for now, bear the sacrifices of that labor that we need to go through to be able to harvest something great”.

He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, noting, “I must acknowledge our president, President Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, our dear father, who has also taken in such direction and such footsteps as the late matriarch because he is one person that I know that also gives and has a large heart. And I know that if given the opportunity, he would take Nigeria as a nation to its proposed destined destination.”

Kasunmu stressed the significance of unity and togetherness, echoing the theme of the lecture, “Strengthening community bonds to foster a sense of unity and togetherness even beyond Ramadan.” He drew parallels between the Islamic and Christian doctrines, noting the universal values of compassion and support for the less privileged.

According to him, the lecture, held in remembrance of the late Habibat Mogaji, served as a platform to celebrate her legacy of generosity and community service.

PM Young: Take inspiration from Muslims

March 31, 2025

Prime Minister Stuart Young has called on civic-minded citizens— which he says the country needs—to be like the religious faithful and insert the scriptures into their daily actions.

“Such persons do not read about God and then try to fit His word around their particular needs, they live with God’s Word,” the Prime Minister said in his Eid-ul-Fitr message yesterday.

As millions around the world and in T&T celebrate Eid today, Young urged citizens to reflect on the virtues that embody Islam and how its adoption in our lives can improve the country.
