Shahzad killed on Kayani aide’s orders; info on Kashmiri passed to US: Report

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi : The New Yorker magazine has said that Pakistani journalist Saleem Shahzad could have been killed on the orders of a senior officer who was part of Pak Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani’s staff, and that the murder was possibly linked to a drone attack days later in which senior Al-Qaeda operative Ilyas Kashmiri was killed.

The article, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dexter Filkins, details the events leading up to Shahzad’s death in May this year.

“...Reliable intelligence indicates that the order to kill Shahzad came from a senior officer on General Kiyani’s staff. The officer made it clear that he was speaking on behalf of Kiyani himself,” the article says.

Noting that Kashmiri was killed four days after Shahzad’s body was found, the article suggests that Pak intelligence agencies tortured the journalist to get information on the whereabouts of the terrorist, which was passed on to the US.

The article reports that the inspector-general of Islamabad police told journalists that Shahzad’s cellphone records had registered more than 258 calls from Kashmiri within a one-month period.

The article claims that Shahzad was under the scanner of Pakistani intelligence agencies, as in the months before his killing, foreign intelligence agencies, including Indian and British, had tried to recruit him.

According to the report, Roger van Zwanenberg, publisher of Pluto Press, the London imprint that released Shahzad’s book, claimed that British intelligence officers wanted Shahzad to help them get in touch with Taliban leaders but he declined. He added that when Shahzad attended a conference in Delhi this spring, “officers from an Indian intelligence agency offered to put him on a retainer.”

In Brussels, a centre keeps promoting the Fai line on Kashmir

Sep 13 2011

Brussels : The Washington-based Kashmiri American Council (KAC) may have been left defunct after the arrest of its director Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, but work continues as usual at the Kashmir Centre in Brussels that has also been named in a FBI chargesheet as being funded and run by the ISI. Fai was arrested in July on charges of trying to use ISI funds to influence American policy on Kashmir.

The Kashmiri Centre office on the upscale Rue Belliard street is full of literature on alleged human rights violations in Kashmir and atrocities by Indian security forces. Its director, Abdul Majeed Tramboo, has been holding protests outside the Indian Embassy in Brussels complaining the Indian government is “leaning on the crutches of the United States” to spread misinformation about the centre.

The centre, which the FBI named along with the London-based Justice Foundation as being run by elements within the Pakistani government, may now come under the scanner with a letter having been sent to the Belgium Prime Minister by an organisation headed by Member of European Parliament Geoffrey van Orden, asking for a probe into its funding.

The Europe India Chamber of Commerce (EICC) has written to the Yvens Leterme, asking Belgian authorities to investigate the activities of the centre, alleging that it has been created and is being run by the ISI. Pointing out that British authorities have already started a probe into the London-based Justice Foundation, the EICC has urged the Belgian government to probe the organisation as it threatens “the peace and security of Belgium and Europe” and is working to “damage Belgo-India relations”.

Van Orden is an influential leader who is on the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee as well as the subcommittee on security and defence. The Kashmir Centre, which focuses mainly on gathering support from the European Union that has its headquarters in Brussels, has been accused in the letter of being used by the ISI to create a spy network in Western Europe.

“The arrest if Mr Fai of the Kashmiri American Council must and should prompt your government to investigate and shut down this ISI run outfit in our midst simply because the Kashmir Council is just the modus operandi of the ISI to infiltrate into Europe,” the letter says.

The centre itself has denied any links with foreign agencies and says it is independent and is working to promote the cause of the Kashmiri people for self-determination. Tramboo was not available for comment but officials at the centre told The Indian Express that there has been no impact of Fai’s arrest on the functioning of the organisation and its activities are continuing as usual. “Nothing has changed. We are continuing our work and there is no question of our being funded by any government agency,” an office bearer said.

Tramboo has been active and vocal about the FBI charges against Fai. In a statement released on August 15, when he organised a protest outside the Indian embassy, he said his centre would not “cease the pursuit of justice” for atrocities committed by Indian security forces in Kashmir. He said the centre had come under attack because of the “quality of the work” and because the Indian government was working with the US to “spread misinformation and bad will”.

‘Guards in Pak private security firms have links to militant outfits’

Sep 13 2011

Islamabad : Private security firms in Pakistan’s Punjab province will be subjected to police scrutiny after it was learnt that many of their guards either belonged to banned militant outfits or were court-martialled and absconders of the Pakistani army.

Some other guards have been found to have been proclaimed and court absconders in different cases of heinous crimes, The Express Tribune daily said. A circular has been sent out to all regional and district offices of Special Branch (SB) of the Punjab Police, by its headquarters, giving a questionnaire for them to fill out, the report said quoting sources.

Reports say that a large number of guards of private security agencies have been deployed on sensitive points, including national and multinational companies, foreign missions, banks, and hotels across the province.

In another development, Pakistani military authorities have decided to curtail the activities of a proselytising organisation in their ranks after intelligence reports warned that its growing influence in the armed forces would have serious implications.

The Dawat-e-Islami, an apolitical Barelvi proselytising organisation, had never been under strict watch until now, primarily because of its non-violent religious views. This changed after Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer was assassinated in January by a police guard believed to be a follower of Dawat-e-Islami.

Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the self-confessed assassin, is believed to be the first person affiliated with Dawat-e-Islami to publicly use violence. According to an intelligence report, the contents of which were shared with The Express Tribune, the influence of Dawat-e-Islami is increasing in the armed forces. “Over Rs 20 million were collected from the Pakistan Air Force for the organisation during the month of Ramazan,” said an unnamed security official.

J&K speaker admits Afzal clemency plea

Sep 13 2011

Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir assembly speaker on Monday listed a resolution moved by independent legislator Abdul Rashi Sheikh, seeking commutation of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Gurus death sentence. The resolution by the north Kashmir MLA will set the stage for a lively debate not just in the J&K House but beyond the Valley.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah had sent a tweet last month after the Tamil Nadu House adopted a motion seeking leniency for Rajiv Gandhis LTTE killers, who have been on the death row for about two decades. He had asked why nobody talks about an assembly resolution on Guru along similar lines.

The Congress is unlikely to support such a resolution and the National Conference-Congress alliance may be dented as a result.

Langate MLA Rashid claims he was inspired by Omars tweet and filed a resolution on September 1 seeking to save Guru from the gallows.

He wants speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone to table it for a vote during the 10-day session beginning September 26.The assembly secretariat spokesman has confirmed receiving 39 resolutions out of which the speaker has listed 35,including Rashids.

Rashid has called upon the National Conference and the PDP to show self-respect by supporting the resolution.Commuting Gurus death sentence is not only a human issue but also a deeply emotional one for Kashmiris.Any wrong step would lead to disaster, he warned.

Although balloting to decide whether or not to debate a resolution does not violate procedure, the speaker still has the authority to take it up for discussion directly in view of the seriousness of sensitivity of the issue, he said.

The Congress,BJP and Panthers party are bound to oppose the resolution while NC members would act as mute spectators.Mehbooba Muftis PDP would support the resolution. The denouement may deliver another dent in the relations between the coalition partners Natonal Conference and Congress-NC, said a political analyst.

U.S. will never wage war against Islam or any religion: President Barack Obama

Sep 12 2011

Ten years after the U.S. launched war against terrorism, in particular those of al-Qaeda and the Taliban, President Barack Obama has said America was not and never would be at war with Islam or any other religion.

“These past 10 years underscore the bonds between all Americans. We have not succumbed to suspicion and mistrust. After 9/11, President (George) Bush made clear what we reaffirm today: the United States will never wage war against Islam or any religion. Immigrants come here from all parts of the globe,” Mr. Obama said.

“In the biggest cities and the smallest towns, in our schools and workplaces, you still see people of every conceivable race, religion and ethnicity -- all of them pledging allegiance to one flag; all of them reaching for the same American dream -- e pluribus unum, out of many, we are one,” Mr. Obama said.

Pak an unreliable ally: US Vice-President

Sep 13 2011

WASHINGTON: Vice-President Joe Biden has said Pakistan has been an “unreliable ally” of the US in the war against terror. Biden, who spoke to CNN, said Pakistan has failed “on occasion” when forced to choose between the US and al-Qaeda. The price of Pakistan’s choices has been the “loss of life of US soldiers in Afghanistan,” he was quoted as saying on the CNN website. “They have to get better... it’s in their interest that they be more cooperative with us. We are demanding it,” he said.

Gaddafi vows to fight till victory, another son flees from country

Sep 13 2011

Tripoli : A Syrian-based television station that has broadcast messages from Col Muammar Gaddafi in the past said he was still in Libya, but it was unable to air a televised appearance for security reasons. It was meant to show the leader among his fighters and people, leading the struggle from Libyan lands, and not from Venezuela or Niger, Mishan Jabouri, owner of the Arrai channel, told viewers.

He read out a text quoting Gaddafi as saying: “We cannot give up Libya to colonisation one more time...There is nothing more to do except fight until victory.”

The comments came even as leading figures of the deposed government of Col Muammar Gaddafi continued to flee from Libya or surface in rebel custody on Monday, including one of Gaddafi’s sons.

Mahmoud Jibril, who is acting as prime minister of the rebels’ Transitional National Council, told reporters on Monday that oil production had begun again, that two months of overdue salaries for state workers would soon be paid, and that negotiations were under way to bring more rebel militias under the direct control of the council.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi’s foreign intelligence chief, Bouzaid Dorda, was reported to be in rebel custody, even as the government of Niger confirmed that Saadi Gaddafi had escaped the rebels’ immediate grasp by crossing the border through the desert. He was in a convoy of about eight people that was intercepted by a Nigerois Army patrol, according to the justice minister, Marou Amadou.

A dozen top officials of the Gaddafi’s government crossed into Niger last week.

Gaddafi's son Saadi 'arrives in Niger'

12 September 2011

One of the sons of the fugitive Libyan leader, Col Muammar Gaddafi, has arrived in neighbouring Niger.

Niger's justice minister said Saadi Gaddafi had been in a convoy which was heading towards the capital, Niamey.

Col Gaddafi's whereabouts are unknown. He has said he will die in Libya.

Anti-Gaddafi troops now control most of Libyan territory, including the capital Tripoli. They have been trying to seize several cities controlled by loyalists, including Bani Walid and Sirte.

On Sunday, rebel forces resumed their attack on Bani Walid, supported by Nato air strikes. Officials say their forces are now within reach of the centre of the town.

Some of Col Gaddafi's family have fled to Algeria. Several convoys of former Gaddafi loyalists are also said to have streamed over Libya's southern border with Niger recently.

'Humanitarian ground'

Niger's government spokesman and Justice Minister Marou Amadou said Saadi Gaddafi was in a convoy along with eight others. Amadou said the convoy was on its way to Agadez in northern Niger and that Saadi and his companions were being allowed in on humanitarian grounds.

Muslim radicals burn US flag on 9/11 anniversary in London

Sep 12 2011

London : A group of Muslim protesters in London set fire to the American flag outside the US embassy during a minute's silence to mark the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Nearly 100 Muslim radicals, including members of Muslims Against Crusades, shouted ‘USA terrorists’ and were holding up anti-American placards, the Daily Mail reports.

Another small group of Muslims staged a counter-demonstration near the embassy, holding placards that read ‘Muslims Against Extremism’ and ‘If You Want Sharia, Move To Saudi’.

A 41-year-old man, who waved a sign that read ‘Keep The Silence’, travelled to London from his home in Glasgow to show the strength of his feelings.

“I''m a Muslim. What they''re doing is bringing shame on all Muslims. This is not part of the teachings of Islam. Islam is all about peace, but what they want to do is hate other people,” he said.

The 60-strong group briefly scuffled with police as they were forced away from their original location to a different part of Grosvenor Square.

According to the report, around 24 people were arrested for breach of the peace.

Bangladesh Madrasa teacher held for attempt to violate a girl child

12 September 2011

A madrasa teacher was arrested for allegedly attempting to violate a minor girl at his mess at Sabujbagh in the city.

Police said the arrestee Habibullah Bashar, 32, of Kodomtola Darul Ulum Madrasa, used to teach Arabic to children at his mess.

The girl, aged around nine, came to his mess with other children in the afternoon for learning Arabic, said police.

Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sabujbagh Police Station, said Bashar told the victim and another minor girl to stay after finishing that day's tuition in the evening.

Sending the other girl to a nearby shop to buy some stuff, Bashar tried to violate the victim, he said.

Locals rushed to the mess and rescued her as she cried for help. They caught Bashar red handed and later handed him over to the police, the OC said.

Can’t trust govt-appointed commissions: Syed Ali Shah Geelani

Bashaarat Masood

Sep 13 2011

Srinagar : Saying that the state police chief is himself involved in the extra-judicial killings in the state, Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir can’t trust any government-appointed commissions to probe the unmarked graves. “The current police chief is himself involved in the extra-judicial killings,” Geelani said at a press conference at his Hyderpora residence.

“When Kuldeep Khoda was DIG Doda-Udhampur range, he was directly involved in the killing of three civilians in Kishtwar. When the police chief himself is involved in fake encounters, how can the people trust the police”. The Indian Express had reported that a police inquiry report had indicted the then DIG Khoda, who is now the Director General of Police, in the killing of three civilians — Fazal Hussain, Farid Hussain and Mohammad Hussain — in Bhaderwah in 1996.

The Hurriyat hardliner also rejected the idea of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and called for a United Nations-appointed fact-finding mission to probe the unmarked graves. “We categorically reject the commission by the name of Truth and Reconciliation Commission. A system that is founded on lies, deception and suppression, how can it provide justice to the people,” said Geelani.

After Parliament attack, Pak feared war, sought help

Sep 13 2011

Srinagar : The Pakistan government sought the intervention of Gulf countries to “bring India back on the negotiating table” and prevent a war after the stand-off between the two neighbours following the Parliament attack in 2001, reveals a confidential cable released by WikiLeaks.

The cable sent from the US embassy in Jordan on June 6, 2006 says that Pakistani diplomat Wasim Sajad visited Amman and sought the intervention of the Jordanian government to prevent a war with India and restart negotiations.

“On June 4, veteran Pakistani diplomat Wasim Sajad visited King Abdullah to discuss the Kashmir crisis and requested that the King use his ‘good office’ to convey to governments around the world the need for India to ‘come back to the negotiating table’,” the cable reads.

“Following this meeting, GOJ Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh contacted the Ambassador to ask officially, at the request of the Pakistani government (GOP), that the USG (US government) do what it can in this regard,” it says.

The cable reveals that the Pakistan government wanted to avoid a war with India after India deployed its troops along the LoC in Kashmir following the December 13, 2001 attack on Parliament.

2 Yemini soldiers killed in Al Qaeda clashes

12 September 2011

SANAA, Yemen — Security officials say two Yemeni soldiers have been killed and four wounded by a roadside bomb blast in a southern city held by Al Qaeda linked militants for nearly four months.

Yemeni government forces, backed by the US and Saudi Arabia, are battling Al Qaeda fighters in Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, in their first major advance on the city in months.

Ground battles and airstrikes have failed to dislodge the militants from Zinjibar and other towns, which militants overran in April and May.

The security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters, said Sunday the bomb exploded in eastern Zinjibar.

Some 90 soldiers and over 300 fighters have been killed in southern Yemen this year.

American missiles kill three in North Waziristan

12 September 2011

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected US missile strike has killed three people in an al-Qaida and Taliban safe haven along the Afghan border.

The two officials say a pair of missiles Sunday struck a house near Mir Ali town in North Waziristan. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk with reporters.

The attack is another reminder of America’s ongoing fight against militants 10 years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The United States has fired scores of missiles into northwest Pakistan since 2008, trying to keep al-Qaida operatives there on the run.

The undeclared program is a source of tension with Pakistan, which has not launched a military operation in North Waziristan despite American requests.

Sep 12, 2011

RAS LANUF: Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi attacked the front gate of Libya's largest oil refinery near the coastal town of Ras Lanuf on Monday, killing 15 guards and wounding two, witnesses said.

"We heard firing and shelling at around 9 in the morning from Gaddafi loyalists," he told Reuters.

A Reuters reporter saw the dead bodies of 15 men with gunshot wounds at a Ras Lanuf hospital where the injured were being treated. Blood covered the floor.

Iran forces kill three members of outlawed Kurdish group

12 September 2011

TEHRAN: Iranian intelligence forces have killed three members of an outlawed leftist Kurdish group, one of whom was responsible for killing three policemen, state television reported on Monday.

“Three members of Komalah terrorist group were killed during a fight with our intelligence forces two nights ago,” the television’s website quoted Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi as saying after a cabinet meeting late on Sunday.

He added that one of those killed was “responsible for killing three police a year ago.”

They were planning a terrorist act but it was foiled,” he said, without giving further details of the operation.

Komalah, a Marxist Kurdish group outlawed since the Islamic revolution of 1979, has been clashing for years with security forces in northwestern Iran, where there is a sizeable Kurdish population.

Iran hangs five drug trafficker in prison

Sep 12, 2011

TEHRAN: Iran on Monday hanged five convicted drug traffickers in prison in the central city of Shahroud, the Fars news agency reported.

The report did not identify those executed.

The latest hanging brings to 192 the number of executions reported in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on media and official reports.

Iranian media reported 179 hangings last year but international human rights groups say the actual number was much higher, ranking the Islamic republic second only to China in the number of people it executed in 2010.

Tehran says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order, and that it is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are among the crimes punishable by death in Iran.

17 Indians on death row to walk free

12 September 2011

SHARJAH— Seventeen Indian expatriates who were sentenced to death in a bootlegging murder case that took place three years ago, will walk free anytime soon after an appeals court waived the capital punishment after blood money was paid to the victim’s family.

The Sharjah Court of Appeal reduced their jail terms to two years followed by deportation after an out-of-court blood money settlement of Dh3.4million.

The convicts, 16 from Punjab and one from the neighbouring state of Haryana, were found guilty by the Sharjah Shariah Court of killing a Pakistani national and injuring three of his compatriots during a turf war over an illegal alcohol business in January 2009. The family of the victim, Misri Nazir Khan, accepted the blood money in July.

Following the settlement, presiding judge Abdullah Yousuf Al Shamsi announced the verdict on Monday morning.

13 dead in Sept 7 attack; many face battle for rest of their lives

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi : The blast at the Delhi High Court last week left 13 dead, but as the media glare moves away, the struggle has just started for the 76 injured, for many of whom life has changed forever.

An analysis of medical records by The Indian Express shows that there are patients with permanently lost hearing, those with vision impaired forever, several with perforated lungs and intestines, many with shattered bones, a few with clots in their brains, one patient who has nerve damage and another with a thousand embedded pellets, many of them on one side of his face.

Doctors say lower-limb injuries were very common in this blast, particularly nail injuries, leading to several cases of amputation. “In the 2006 Sarojini Nagar blast and the 2009 serial blasts, patients had upper-body injuries, including lots of chemical and routine burns. Farooq Abdullah raises red flag against Geelani, separatist leaders

Sep 12 2011

National Conference president and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah flagged the issue of “unaccounted money” amassed by the Hurriyat hardliners in the name of Kashmiri youth killed during last year’s summer unrest in the Kashmir Valley and the liberal flow of “hawala” money in their deep pockets.

Sporting a saffron cap and T-shirt, the former Chief Minister raised the red flag against Geelani and other separatist leaders, while demanding a thorough probe by the Income Tax department into the details of the money raised in the name of Kashmiri youth killed during last year’s summer unrest in the Valley and the rebuilding of the structure of revered shrine of Charar-e-Sharief.

The 14the century shrine was gutted during an encounter between security forces and militants on May 11, 1995.

Prashant Bhushan differs with Anna on Kasab death penalty

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi : Differing with Anna Hazare’s prescription of ‘public hanging’ for Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab, one of his colleagues, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, maintains he is against death penalty.

“Anna Hazare has expressed his individual opinion. In fact, he too is against death penalty. But perhaps in this case there is a strong feeling that Kasab be hanged. He has aired his opinion and he is entitled to it. Of course, I do not agree with it. My own view is that there should not be any death penalty at all,” Bhushan told The Indian Express.

Bhushan, who has been arguing forcefully for abolishing death penalty in the country, said every member of Team Anna did not have to necessarily agree on every point. “There would probably be many people in our group who would differ with Anna on this issue. Everyone doesn’t have to hold the same opinion on everything,” he added. Following the Delhi High Court blast last week, Hazare had demanded that terrorists like Kasab be hanged in public.

National Investigation Agency: Mall office spooks top terror agency

By Aman Sharma

Sep 13 2011

NIA officers fear for their safety at Jasola office

THE CENTRE pins its hopes on the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to crack the Delhi blast case but the government’s elite probe agency is struggling to get a proper office! The NIA has, in fact, complained to the Union home ministry that it increasingly finds it difficult to operate out of a commercial mall in south Delhi’s Jasola District Centre, its office for the past 32 months since its inception.

The agency, which investigates terror cases, occupies two floors of Splendor Forum, a commercial mall, on a reported monthly rent of ` 50 lakh. Keeping company with the sleuths in the six- storey mall are fast food outlets such as Café Coffee Day, branches of private banks such as HDFC and ICICI and also a Porsche office.

The NIA has told the home ministry that its sensitive investigation work warrants a proper office. “ We are writing to the NDMC to provide the NIA space at the erstwhile Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Office in Janpath.

The home ministry had been requesting the urban development ministry in vain to give the NIA space in the CGO Complex where the CBI was housed till earlier this year. An elite probe agency handling sensitive terror cases needs a proper office to work from,” a top home ministry official said on Monday.

“Delhi blast probe still wide open”

DEVESH K. PANDEY

Sep 12 2011

The Indian Mujahideen (IM) is emerging as one of the prime suspects in the Delhi High Court blast that claimed 13 lives and left over 75 injured. Three emails have been sent in the outfit's name claiming responsibility for the blast.

On November 23, 2007, the IM carried out serial blasts at the district courts in Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad. An email owning up the synchronised blasts was sent from a cyber café in Laxmi Nagar here. “These facts will have to be kept in mind. Though several IM terrorists have been arrested, many of them are still at large,” said an officer.

While interrogation reports of the suspected IM terrorists arrested in different parts of the country are being re-examined, it is learnt that some travel agents in the capital have been quizzed.

Investigations revealed that two of the emails were sent from near Kolkata through a mobile phone. It is suspected that the phone and the SIM card used for sending the emails have been destroyed, suggesting that they could be authentic. “The probe is still wide open, we cannot say for sure which group carried out the blast,” said an officer.

Two Anantnag residents, who were picked up at Alwar in Rajasthan on suspicion, have been given a clean chit as “prima facie” no evidence has been found against them. “They have not been detained, but their questioning will continue at least for another day. No one from the National Investigation Agency has contacted us,” said a Rajasthan police officer.

Delhi blast email trail is not cold yet, top cop heads to Kishtwar to probe

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has deputed one of its senior officers, Superintendent of Police S P Pani, to Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir to find the “real sender” of the email which claimed the involvement of Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami (HuJI) in the September 7 Delhi High Court blast.

The email was traced to a cybercafe in Kishtwar. Police arrested the owner, his brother, and an employee along with a college student who was initially suspected to have sent the mail. Following interrogation, however, all four were let off. Subsequently, two other youngsters who had used the cafe around the time the email was sent were picked up, but they too were released.

The fact that a senior NIA officer has now been sent to Kishtwar indicates the agency is focused on probing any possible J&K link to the attack. The J&K Police on Monday detained two more youth from Kishtwar for questioning.

The police also wrote to the chiefs of the Anti-Terrorism Squads of states across the country, urging them to contact the J&K Police before detaining any Kashmiri suspect.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has been worried about the possibility of arrests of Kashmiri students and traders as suspects in the attack. Two Kashmiri traders had been picked up in Alwar for their alleged similarity with sketches of the suspects issued by the NIA and Delhi Police.

Disappointed over SC verdict: Zakia Jafri

Sep 12 2011

Expressing disappointment over the Supreme Court order in the 2002 Gulburg Society riots case, Zakia Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in the disturbance, said the real culprits are still roaming free.

“I still have faith in the Supreme Court, but some things have been missed out,” Ms. Zakia, whose husband was killed in Gulburg Housing Society massacre, told reporters at her residence in Surat.

“It has been nearly 10 years since the incident. People have been arrested and trial was on against them. However, the real culprits, who were behind the riots are still roaming free,” she said.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to pass any order on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s alleged inaction to contain the 2002 riots and referred the matter to the magistrate concerned in Ahmedabad for a decision.

“I am ready for a long struggle ahead,” Ms. Zakia said, adding that she would fight for justice till her last breath.

Sixty nine people, including Mr. Jafri, were killed in the Gulburg Society riots on February 28, 2002, following the Godhra train burning incident.

More than 60 people are undergoing trial in the case, which was probed by the SC-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Ms. Zakia had filed a complaint against Mr. Modi and others in the Gulburg Society riots case, based on which, the apex court had asked the SIT to investigate.

Final hearing in the case was on in the special trial court here presided by Judge B J Dhandha.

Gujarat: Narendra Modi hasnt got a clean chit, insists Congress

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi: Congress on Monday accused BJP of distorting the Supreme Court direction on Zakia Jafris petition, asserting that it had not given any clean chit to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.

AICC spokesman Abhishek Singhvi, refuting BJPs claims that Modi had been exonerated in the riots case, said,Please be clear the apex court has not opined on the merits at all.Secondly,it has not given Modi any clean chit in any manner whatsoever direct or indirect. He added that the issue of Modi being made part of the riots case was still wide open.

Singhvis assertion preceded a strong attack on BJP for taking liberty with the truth in keeping with its unhealthy disregard for accuracy.

Congress said the apex court had not commented on the merits of the case and had only sent the SIT report and the amicus curiaes report to the magistrate for decision, and even said the petitioner should be heard in case SIT concluded that Modi should be left out of the riots case.

Gujarat: Couldnt have been a better order than this: Sanjiv Bhatt

Sep 13 2011

Ahmedabad: Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, the main witness to Zakia Jafris allegation of a larger conspiracy behind the 2002 riots, believes that the Supreme Courts order on the complaint against chief minister Narendra Modi and 62 others is the best order one could have got from the court.

In April,Bhatt filed an affidavit in the SC stating that he was present in the meeting on February 27,2002 at Modis residence where the chief minister asked top officials to allow the Hindus to vent their anger against the Muslims in the aftermath of the Godhra train-burning incident. He was posted as DCP Intelligence then.

Bhatt lauded the part of SC order where the judges have asked SIT to bare all evidence before the trial court. He claimed that SIT would also have to place pieces of evidence that do not support its case,if it wants to give a clean chit to Modi. Now,SIT does not have to decide whether my statement is correct or not.It is the court that will decide the veracity of my statement, he said.

There could not have been a better order than this from any court in the framework of criminal procedure code. The state of registration of FIR is avoided, for which the petitioner was trying hard for years, Bhatt said.

Gujarat: Will SC order on Jafri have a bearing on other cases

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi: The Supreme Courts decision to end monitoring of the probe into Zakia Nasim Ahesans complaint because the SIT had filed chargesheets, could have a bearing on its monitoring of the CBI probe into two high-profile cases the 2G spectrum scam and the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.

In Zakias case investigated by the apex courts Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by former CBI director R K Raghavan,a bench of Justices D K Jain,P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam concurred with several earlier SC judgments which laid down that once investigation was complete and chargesheet filed, the process of monitoring of the probe by the SC must come to an end.The three-judge bench deferentially concurred with the judgments and said: We are of the opinion that in the instant case,we have reached a stage where the process of monitoring of the case must come to an end.It would neither be desirable nor advisable to retain further seisin (continue monitoring) over this case.We dispose of this appeal accordingly. The apex court-monitored investigations into the 2G scam and Sohrabuddin fake encounter have reached a somewhat similar position.

In 2G scam, the court had on December 16 last year accepted the joint request of the CBI and the Union government to monitor the probe by the CBI,ED and income tax department into the alleged irregular allotment of mobile service licences during the tenure of A Raja as telecom minister.

Gujarat: In BJP, celebration time: Modi has passed test by fire, says Sushma

Sep 13 2011

New Delhi : A euphoric BJP interpreted today’s Supreme Court direction as vindication of its position that there was “not a shred of evidence” to link Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with the riots of 2002.

Top BJP leaders issued statements welcoming the Supreme Court ruling and praising Modi.

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court has certainly brought great relief to the BJP and to everyone who regards Modi as one of the model chief ministers of the country,” party patriarch L K Advani said.

No other leader in the political history of India has had to face such a sustained vilification campaign, Advani said. Despite that, the good governance and honest administration provided by Modi has been rarely seen in any state, he added.

“Narendrabhai has passed agnipareeksha today. My heartiest congratulations to him. Satyamev Jayate.

Gujarat: BJP thrilled & Jakia upset but activists say order fair

By D. P. Bhattacharya

Sep 13 2011

THE SUPREME Court’s decision certainly came as a much- needed breather for Narendra Modi.

The BJP was quick to interpret the order as Modi’s virtual exoneration, though this was hardly the case as his critics claimed.

The BJP’s publicity machinery was immediately at work, claiming the muchmaligned Modi had finally been given vindicated.

Minutes after the order was passed, local BJP workers launched a campaign through SMS, claiming that the CM did not have anything to do with the Gulbarg Society massacre case.

The state government in its reaction claimed that while “ vested interests wanted to subvert the state government by making false allegations”, the Supreme Court “ has not paid heed to the allegations and expressed confidence in the SIT report and the judiciary of Gujarat.” Government spokesperson Jay Narayan Vyas said: “ The government of Gujarat has been committed from the beginning to punish the criminals and to deliver justice to the victims.” He also took a dig at human rights activists and accused them of delaying the process of justice.

Supreme Court asks local court to decide on Narendra Modi probe

Sep 12 2011

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to pass any order on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s alleged inaction to contain the 2002 Gujarat riots after the Godhra carnage and referred the matter to the concerned magistrate in Ahmedabad for a decision.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice D.K. Jain directed the Special Investigation Team, which is probing the riot cases, to submit its final report before the magistrate who was asked to decide whether to proceed against Mr. Modi and 62 others, which includes senior government officials.

The bench made it clear that there was no need for it to further monitor the riot cases.

The bench also comprising justices P. Sathasivam and Aftab Alam said in case the magistrate decides to drop proceedings against Mr. Modi and others, he has to hear the plea of slain MP Ehsan Jafri’s widow Zakia Jafri, who had filed a complaint against the Gujarat Chief Minister.

Court upholds conviction of Yemen Al Qaeda’s media chief

Sep 12 2011

A military court late on Friday upheld the conviction and life sentence of a Guantanamo detainee from Yemen who served as Osama bin Laden’s media specialist.

Ali Hamza al-Bahlul was convicted in November 2008 of 35 counts of conspiracy, solicitation to commit murder and providing material support for terrorism.

But Bahlul, who initially represented himself and pleaded not guilty, argued that his conviction should be reversed in part because none of the charges against him constituted war crimes that could be prosecuted by a military commission. Bahlul also argued that his sentence was inappropriately severe. The US Court of Military Commission Review disagreed on all counts in only its second review of a conviction. Prosecutors said bin Laden appointed Bahlul as his personal assistant and public relations secretary in the late 1990s. He later produced a recruiting video after the 2000 suicide attack on the USS Cole in Yemen.

Court documents state that Bahlul said he was bored in Afghanistan and had initially requested a suicide mission, specifically seeking to be the 20th September 11 hijacker.

The documents also state that Bahlul was asked to research the economic impact of the Sept 11 attacks, which bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders first heard about on a radio that he was operating.

Prosecutors also said Bahlul prepared what was described as martyr wills for two of the 9/11 hijackers. Bahlul is one of at least six Guantanamo detainees who have been convicted and sentenced.

Students Islamic Org.: Muslim students to agitate for scholarships

Sep 12 2011

While the Central government has fixed a target of 48,157 post matric scholarships in Maharashtra for meritorious students from class 11 to post graduation belonging to the economically weaker sections of minority communities (Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Sikh and Parsi), its implementation is shoddy.

According to the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO), Maharashtra, in the fifth year of the scholarship programme, there is gross negligence, inefficiency and a lack of co-ordination among different education directorates in the State. In a press statement, the SIO said that earlier, in the year 2009-10, against a physical target of 64,400 scholarships, only 24,000 were sanctioned and funds for 40,000 were not utilised.

This year, hardly 20,000 applications were uploaded against the target of 48,157 scholarships, and these were not even scrutinised or verified by the colleges. The SIO has decided to launch a State-wide agitation to demand implementation of this scholarship scheme effectively and making it more student-friendly.

The SIO demands extension of the last date of submission of forms to October 15, 2011 instead of September 15. It has demanded better publicity for these scholarships and enhancement of the maximum annual income limit from Rs. 2 lakh to 4.5 lakh as is the case for the Maulana Azad National Fellowships for minorities. All eligible minority students should be awarded scholarships with 100 per cent fee reimbursement.

Iraq’s Sadr asks followers to stop attacking US troops

By Sameer N. Yacoub and Lara Jakes

12 September 2011

BAGHDAD: An anti-American cleric is urging his followers to stop attacking US troops in Iraq so that their withdrawal from the country isn`t slowed down, a call meant to ramp up pressure on Baghdad`s political leaders who are considering asking some American forces to stay.

In a statement posted on his website, Muqtada al-Sadr told his militias to halt attacks against US forces till the withdrawal is finished at the end of the year as required under a security agreement between Washington and Baghdad.

“Out of my desire to complete Iraq`s independence and to finish the withdrawal of the occupation forces from our holy lands, I am obliged to halt military operations of the honest Iraqi resistance until the withdrawal of the occupation forces is complete,” al-Sadr said in the statement, posted late Saturday. Sadrist lawmaker Mushraq Naji confirmed the statement on Sunday.

However, al-Sadr warned that “if the withdrawal doesn`t happen … the military operations will be resumed in a new and tougher way.”

The statement followed last week`s notice by US officials in Baghdad, announcing the start of the withdrawal.

Pro-Gaddafi radio urges: fight today, today, today

12 September 2011

NEAR BANI WALID , Libya — A pro-Muammar Gaddafi radio station afternoon broadcast a call to arms to residents against fighters backing Libya’s new rulers massed outside the oasis town of Bani Walid, an AFP correspondent said.

‘Go out on the streets to protect Warfalla, they are coming to kill us,’ the radio broadcast repeated over and over, referring to the main tribe in the area.

‘They want to spread corruption and destruction everywhere. Go today, today, today — now you are armed there is no excuse. This is the time for jihad (holy warfare).’

Bani Walid southeast of Tripoli, Gaddafi’s hometown Sirte to the east and Sabha in the deep south are the remaining holdouts of forces loyal to Gaddafi, who went into hiding when rebel fighters overran Tripoli last month.

Libya’s interim leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil on Saturday gave the green light to his forces to attack the three towns after declaring the deadline for pro-Gaddafi enclaves to surrender over.

Skirmishes erupted at Bani Walid on Sunday afternoon even as the radio was broadcasting its appeal in which at least two former rebel fighters were killed and 12 wounded, according to paramedics.

Commanders said they were still awaiting final orders to storm the town.

Meanwhile, around 200 pickup trucks with mounted light artillery gathered before dawn Sunday in the desert and began moving south towards Sirte, cutting through a string of villages where they met no resistance.

Qaddafi’s spy chief captured

12 September 2011

TRIPOLI: Bouzaid Dorda, the head of Muammar Qaddafi's external security organization, has been arrested by anti-Qaddafi fighters, Reuters witnesses said.

Dorda, Qaddafi's foreign intelligence service chief, will be handed over to Libya's interim governing council later, an anti-Qaddafi fighter said.

A team of Reuters journalists visited a house in the capital's Zenata district where Dorda, a former prime minister, was held by members of a unit of anti-Qaddafi fighters who call themselves Brigades of the Martyr Abdelati Ghaddour.

Dorda was kept in the downstairs living room of a private house, which was guarded by about 20 fighters clad in battle fatigues and armed with assault rifles.

Dorda took on his job in May after his predecessor Moussa Koussa defected.

He has been subject to a travel ban under a United Nations sanctions resolution passed in February.

Dorda is one of several former government officials rounded up since Tripoli fell to anti-Qaddafi forces last month. Qaddafi's foreign minister, Abdelati Obeidi, was arrested on Aug. 31 in a suburb west of Tripoli.

PPP in secret talks with Musharraf to corner Sharif's PML-N: report

Sep 12 2011

Islamabad: Pakistan's ruling PPP has begun secret negotiations with Pervez Musharraf's party to isolate its rival PML-N and to facilitate the former military ruler's possible return to the country, a media report said today.

The PPP and Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League have set up a "covert communication channel" to coordinate their political activities, ostensibly directed against the PML-N, The Express Tribune quoted its sources as saying.

A PPP delegation met for two hours with Chaudhry Sarfraz Anjum Kahlon, a top adviser of Musharraf, at his residence in Cambridge in Britain on September 7 to discuss a "new political alignment" which could pave the way for the former President's return to Pakistan from self-exile.

PPP and APML have agreed to not criticise each other in public and to focus on attacking their common rival, PML-N.

They also agreed to maintain a secret channel to evolve a strategy to defeat the PML-N in its political bastion of Punjab in the next general election.

Musharraf has been living outside Pakistan since early 2009. He stepped down as President in 2008 to avoid impeachment. He has announced that he intends to return to Pakistan on March 23 to lead the APML in the 2013 election.

The PPP delegation, sanctioned by party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, included three lawmakers from Gujranwala, Sargodha and Sahiwal, sources said.

Other members of the delegation were a federal minister and three confidantes of Zardari, the report said.

Shahbaz Sharif facing threat to life: report

Sep 12 2011

Islamabad : Death threats have forced senior PML-N leader and Chief Minister of Pakistan's Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, to curtail his public activities.

Sources close to the chief minister said he had received death threats.

They said an investigation is underway following reports from security agencies about these threats.

According to reports, security agencies have warned that Sharif might be attacked during visits to hospitals for inspection of healthcare arrangements to counter the spread of dengue fever in Punjab.

On the request of security agencies, the chief minister cancelled his visits to Sahiwal and Sargodha on September 8.

He also did not attend other official events in Faisalabad, Bahawalpur and Gujranwala two days later.

The anti-terrorist squad and other agencies have been informed about the threats.

Sharif, the younger brother of former premier Nawaz Sharif, had earlier received threats on two occasions in August.

Bangladesh Minister: Trial to end culture of impunity, establish rule of law

12 September 2011

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said democracy cannot be institutionalised unless people who committed crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation are brought to justice.

Trial on crimes against humanity is being held in order to put an end to the culture of impunity, heal the wound of the nation, establish the rule of law and ensure justice for the victims, he said.

Syrian forces raid homes after week of bloodshed

12 September 2011

AMMAN - Syrian forces stepped up raids across the country to arrest activists after one of the bloodiest weeks in the six-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, residents and activists said.

Dozens of people were seized in house-to-house raids in the eastern tribal province of Deir al-Zor, in the southern Hauran Plain and in villages around the city of Hama, which was among the hardest hit by armoured assaults on protest flashpoints.

A lawyer from the southern city of Deraa, cradle of the revolt against 41 years of Assad family rule, said he saw dozens of troops encircling the nearby village of Yadouda.

“I saw them by accident and fled. I heard that they later went into houses. They can come at any minute and raid and arrest,” the lawyer, who asked not to be named, said by phone.

Syrian authorities do not comment on arrests but have said in the past that any arrests are made in accordance with the constitution. They say they are fighting armed gangs who have killed at least 500 security personnel.

Yemeni troops killed four Islamist militants

12 September 2011

ADEN/SANAA - Yemeni troops killed four Islamist militants on Sunday as the army consolidated its grip on Zinjibar, a day after recapturing the southern city from a group calling itself Ansar Al Sharia, a military spokesman said.

Separately, a ruling party official said President Ali Abdullah Saleh was expected to empower his deputy to negotiate over a Gulf-sponsored plan for the transfer of power, but that he would not give up his state powers immediately.

Residents said a Yemeni air strike killed at least three fighters near the militant-held town of Jaar, apparently as they were fleeing towards it from Zinjibar.

Ansar Al Sharia, which the government says is linked to the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), seized Zinjibar, capital of Abyan province, in May, cutting off an army brigade in a nearby barracks.

The army said on Saturday it had retaken the coastal city and linked up with the stranded 25th brigade after a two-month offensive backed by air strikes and heavy weaponry.

Islamist militants have seized swathes of territory in Abyan, exploiting turmoil in a country convulsed for months by protests against Saleh’s 33-year rule.

Syrian group says top activist severely beaten

12 September 2011

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said prominent rights campaigner Najati Tayara is in a “very bad” health condition after he was “severely” beaten at a Homs prison.

The Britain-based observatory said in a statement received by AFP in Nicosia that it “has learned that investigators at the so-called ‘Polish’ prison in Homs severely beat Tayara on Friday.

“He is in a very bad health condition. He has been moved to the military intelligence division in Damascus,” it added.

Tayara, 66, was arrested in Homs on May 12, a day after he reported that shelling and gunfire had rocked the city, the third largest city in Syria.

“He was referred to court on charges of harming the prestige of the state,” the statement said, adding that he was released from Homs central prison on August 31 but later arrested by intelligence officials.

The Observatory holds the Syrian authorities responsible for any danger that threatens the life of Tayara,” the rights advocacy group said.

“It condemns the continued arbitrary arrests of opponents and activists, and calls for their immediate release.”

The United Nations says more than 2,200 people — mostly civilians — have been killed in a crackdown on almost daily protests by pro-democracy and anti-regime demonstrators in Syria since mid-March. Rights groups say more than 10,000 people are behind bars.

12 September 2011

MANAMA — Bahrain will mark the 30th death anniversary of legendary folk singer Salem Al Allan on September 25 with a host of activities.

Al Allan was born in 1914 in Qalali Village, in Muharraq governorate during the reign of the late His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa the then ruler of Bahrain.

The late Al Allan left behind many recorded songs for Bahrain’s TV and Radio station which have been preserved due to the efforts of Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa undersecretary at the Ministry of Information at that time who was keen to document folk music and art.

The late singer also participated in a theatre play written by. Rashid Saad and directed by Rashid Al Jazzaf in 1975.

In 1978, he travelled with the Bahrain Society for Folk Music and Arts to Paris and participated in recording of a video about the art of diving in Bahrain for UNESCO. The illiterate artist lost his eye sight at the age of 40.

He had got an amazing voice which impressed French experts who were then invited to study the layers of his voice.

During his lifetime Al Allan contributed to the Bahrain Society of Folk Music and Art and performed in many Arab and foreign countries including Tunisia and France, Germany and Australia, as well as Kuwait, and Qatar. He died at the age of 67 years.

At least 2,600 killed in Syria protests: UN Reuters

12 September 2011

At least 2,600 people have been killed in Syria since pro-democracy protests broke out in March and President Bashar Al Assad sent in troops to crush the unrest, the UN said.

The death toll, 400 higher than earlier UN estimates, was based on “reliable sources on the ground,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who released the data.

The figures were almost twice the size of the Syrian government’s estimate.

Bouthaina Shaaban, one of Assad’s advisors, earlier on Monday said about 1,400 people had died — half of them police officers and half opposition activists.

Syria blames armed groups and “terrorists” for the violence and argues the security forces are defending public order.

“With regard to Syria, let me note that, according to reliable sources on the ground, the number of those killed since the onset of the unrest in mid-March 2011 in that country, has now reached at least 2,600,” Pillay told the 47-member UN Human Rights Council.

She did not identify the sources. Syria’s government has barred Pillay’s investigation team, and foreign journalists from entering the country.

Syria had also repeatedly blocked UN efforts to get human rights monitors into the country, UN humanitarian affairs chief Valerie Amos told reporters in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. .

Video and mobile phone images emerging from the country during the six months of arrest have appeared to show tanks and soldiers firing on unarmed protesters.

9/11 Stigmatised hero: a tale of redemption

NARAYAN LAKSHMAN

Sep 12 2011

On that clear morning 10 years ago, Mohammed Salman Hamdani (23), a Pakistani-American, headed out from his home in Brooklyn, New York, to his new job as a researcher at Rockefeller University. While on his journey he suddenly noticed smoke pouring out of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in Manhattan and realised something was dreadfully wrong.

Being a certified Emergency Medical Technician and a New York City Police Department cadet, Mr. Hamdani did not hesitate and used his official identification to get through restricted traffic and reach the burning towers to offer assistance to those trapped within.

He was never heard from again.

Until this point Mr. Hamdani's chilling story resembled that of 2,605 other New York City victims of the 9/11 terror attacks, which shook the United States to its very core and set in motion a chain of events that would reverberate across the world. What followed, however, was a disturbing narrative of minority discrimination and an early indicator that the U.S.' so-called “war on terror” would have a darker side.

US condemns death of Syrian activist

12 September 2011

DAMASCUS: The United States has condemned the killing of a Syrian rights activist, as rights campaigners reported that the security forces were continuing their deadly crackdown on anti-regime dissent.

New York based Human Rights Watch said Ghiyath Matar, 26, had been a key player in organising protests against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Arrested on September 6, he died in detention after being tortured; the group added citing activists, who said he had bruises on his chest and signs of facial injuries.

“The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the killing of Syrian human rights activist Ghiyath Matar while in the custody of Syrian security forces,” US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

“His brave commitment to confronting the regime’s despicable violence with peaceful protest serves as an example for the Syrian people and for all those who suffer under the yoke of oppression,” she added in a statement.

Palestinians to go to UN despite US threats: Abbas

12 September 2011

AMMAN: President Mahmud Abbas said in remarks published that Palestinians will seek UN membership despite US “threats” to stop financial aid. “We will go to the United Nations to obtain an international recognition to the state of Palestine, despite the obstacles and dangers, including US threats to halt 470 million dollars in annual assistance,” Abbas told Jordan’s government-owned Al-Rai newspaper in an interview. “If Washington uses a veto against us, this does not mean a boycott. We had our differences with the US in the past. Anyway, we will take a suitable decision in line with developments,” he told the Arabic-language daily. Abbas is to attend the UN General Assembly summit of world leaders starting September 20, but Washington has already said it would veto any bid to the United Nations Security Council, arguing that a Palestinian state can be established only through negotiations.

Decade after 9/11, Afghans languish in Pakistan

12 September 2011

HARIPUR/ISLAMABAD: When Ghulum Nabi’s father heard US-backed troops toppled Afghanistan’s Taliban after the September 11, 2001, attacks, he rushed to their family home in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan to spread the news.

Perhaps, one day they could all return to a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan supported by a Western superpower.

After 10 years of US-led efforts to pacify one of the world’s most turbulent countries, Afghan refugees in Pakistan have little hope for stability in their homeland.

“I grew up here and Pakistan is my country. When my father pushes me to go back to visit, I end up having a fight with him. I’m never going to live there. I want to get Pakistani nationality. This is my home,” said Nabi, 22, who runs a crockery shop.

“It doesn’t matter if it is America or anyone else trying to watch over Afghanistan. I will still be looking around to see if anyone is pointing a gun at me.”

Afghan President Hamid Karzai would welcome a return of the millions of Afghans living in Pakistan.

On 9/11 anniversary, Saudis recall terrorist attacks in Kingdom

Sep 12, 2011

JEDDAH: On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Saudis remembered Sunday the 2003 terrorist attacks in the Kingdom that claimed the lives of about 350 security personnel, citizens, Arab and Muslim expatriates as well as Westerners.

Twelve bomb explosions left more than 770 people injured. The terrorists also randomly fired their guns at people and attacked companies and military bases.

Despite the huge losses that put the Kingdom at the top of countries most affected by terrorism, the country was able to successfully fight terrorism through military plans and promoting the correct Islamic ideology. It was also able to foil a number of terrorist operations and reinforced its position as an important partner in world efforts to combat terrorism.

The Kingdom was able to root out terrorist havens and thwarted 220 operations. The efforts of Saudi security forces culminated in the killing of the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Kingdom, Fahd Al-Juwair.

US used 9/11 to wage Iraq, Afghanistan wars: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Sep 12, 2011

TEHRAN, Sept 12, 2011 (AFP) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the United States used the 9/11 attacks as a "game and pretext" to wage wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"September 11 was actually a game designed to influence the emotions of the human community, in order to find a pretext for attacking Islamic regions and invading Iraq and Afghanistan," he was quoted as saying on the website of his office on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

It was not the first time Ahmadinejad has criticised Iran's arch-foe over the attacks which killed nearly 3,000 people, destroyed the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre and plunged the country into an era of wars.

In June, during a counter-terrorism summit in Tehran, Ahmadinejad said that "the American government used the attacks as a pretext to occupy two countries, and kill, injure and displace people in the region."

He also sparked Western fury in September 2010 when in his speech at the United Nations -- four miles (six kilometres) from where the World Trade Center used to be -- he said that "some people within the US government orchestrated the attacks to reverse the declining American economy."

And in March 2010 he called the 9/11 attacks as a "big lie."

Afghan local police guilty of serious abuses: HRW

12 September 2011

KABUL: An Afghan police force funded and supported by the United States is getting away with serious abuses including rape and murder, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report published on Monday.

The findings ignite fresh questions about the Western exit strategy from Afghanistan and about handing full control of security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014, when all foreign combat troops are due to have left.

The 7,000-strong Afghan Local Police (ALP), set up last year and touted as central to the security handover, arms residents protecting their communities in areas where the Afghan army and regular police have only limited reach.

They do not have law enforcement powers.

HRW found evidence of ALP abuses including killings, rapes and arbitrary detentions in three provinces — Baghlan, Herat and Uruzgan — out of seven where it conducted interviews.

It said such cases raised “serious concerns” about ALP vetting, recruitment and oversight and urged improvements including the establishment of a complaints body to deal with problems.

Monu Ojha faces life term for Delhi terror email

Sep 13 2011

Ahmedabad: Monu Ojha, the 22-year-old school dropout, who is behind the Delhi terror email, has been charged with cyber terrorism. If convicted, he may get life imprisonment or a jail term of 14 years.

I don’t believe the police are equipped to fight terror and I am happy that the mail has generated so much action. I am half-guilty that it created trouble for citizens, he said. He admitted he expected to be famous after his act. Ojhas mail was the third of the four that claimed responsibility for the blast and threatened more attacks. The breakthrough came when cyber cell tracked the email down to a server in Russia and found it to be a decoy, said Ahmedabad police commissioner Sudhir Sinha.

A probe found that the IP address was masked by specialized software.Using cyber crime probe tools, the crime branch tracked down the computer used to send the mail to Patan. When Yadav was questioned, he directed them to his friend Monu Ojha, who confessed to sending the mail using Yadavs laptop.

Huge losses’ as Pakistan floods kill 200

12 September 2011

ISLAMABAD — More than 200 people have been killed by devastating rains in Pakistan, which is still struggling to rebuild after last year’s worst floods in living memory, officials said on Monday.

Pakistan, a nuclear-armed state suffering appalling levels of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked violence, saw 21 million people affected in the 2010 flooding that killed 1,750 people and cost the economy $10 billion.

Aid agencies have accused the government of failing to invest in adequate prevention measures and vast swathes of farmland have been inundated for a second year in the southern province of Sindh, the nation’s breadbasket.

The situation this year was even worse than last year, one official said.

“So far, 209 people have been killed and 5.3 million affected,” Zafar Qadir, head of the country’s disaster management authority, told reporters.

“Around 1.7 million acres of agricultural land has also been affected by the rains and floods.”
