Saffronisation Of School Curriculum: All Changes In
Textbooks Based On Evidence And Facts, Says NCERT Director
16 Jun 2024
Director of National Council of Educational Research
and Training (NCERT) Dinesh Prasad Saklani during an interview with PTI, in New
Delhi, Saturday, June 15, 2024. PTI
-----------
Rejecting accusations of saffronisation of school
curriculum, NCERT's director has said that references to Gujarat riots and
Babri masjid demolition were modified in school textbooks because teaching
about riots "can create violent and depressed citizens.
" In an interaction with PTI editors at the
agency's headquarters here on Saturday, National Council of Educational
Research and Training (NCERT) director Dinesh Prasad Saklani said the tweaks in
textbooks are part of annual revision and should not be a subject of hue and
cry.
Asked about references to Gujarat riots or Babri
masjid demolition being tweaked in NCERT textbooks, Saklani said, "Why
should we teach about riots in school textbooks? We want to create positive
citizens not violent and depressed individuals".
"Should we teach our students in a manner that
they become offensive, create hatred in society or become victim of hatred? Is
that education's purpose? Should we teach about riots to such young children
...when they grow up, they can learn about it but why school textbooks. Let
them understand what happened and why it happened when they grow up.The hue and
cry about the changes is irrelevant," he said.
It instead focuses on the Supreme Court judgement that
paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple at the site where the
disputed structure once stood before it was torn down by Hindu activists in
December 1992.
"We want to create positive citizens and that's
what is the purpose of our textbooks. We cannot have everything in them. The
purpose of our education is not to create violent citizens ...depressed
citizens. Hatred and violence are not subjects of teaching, they should not be
focus of our textbooks," added Saklani.
The latest deletions in the textbooks include: BJP's
'rathyatra' from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya; the role of karsevaks; communal
violence in the wake of the demolition of the Babri masjid; President's rule in
BJP-ruled states; and the BJP's expression of "regret over the happenings
at Ayodhya".
"If Supreme Court has given a verdict in favour
of Ram temple, Babri masjid or Ram janmabhoomi, should it not be included in
our textbooks, what is the problem in that? We have included the new updates.
Asked about allegations of saffronisation of
curriculum and ultimately textbooks, Saklani said, "If something has
become irrelevant ...it will have to be changed. Why shouldn't it be changed. I
don't see any saffronisation here.
"If we are telling about Indian Knowledge System,
how can it be saffronisation? If we are telling about iron pillar in Mehrauli
and saying Indians were way ahead of any metallurigical scientist, are we
saying wrong? How can it be saffronisation?" Saklani, 61, who was head of
the ancient history department at the HNB Garhwal University before taking
charge as NCERT director in 2022, has faced criticism over the changes in
textbooks, especially pertaining to historical facts.
"What is wrong about changes in textbooks?
Updating textbooks is a global practice, it is in interest of education.
Revising textbooks is an annual exercise. Whatever is changed is decided by
subject and pedagogy experts. I do not dictate or interfere in the process
...there is no imposition from top.
From the assertion that recent studies of ancient DNA
obtained from archaeological sources at Rakhigarhi, an Indus Valley site in
Haryana, rule out Aryan immigration to a call for more research into whether
the Harappans and the Vedic people were the same, several crucial topics have
either been dropped or tweaked in textbooks.
A two-page table detailing achievements of Mughal
emperors such as Humayun, Shah Jahan, Akbar, Jahangir and Aurangzeb have also
been removed.
Referring to the changes to the section on Ayodhya,
the NCERT had said in April -- "Content is updated as per latest
development in politics.
Text on Ayodhya issue has been thoroughly revised
because of the latest changes brought by the Supreme Court's Constitutional
bench verdict and its widespread welcoming reception".
Saklani said, some changes have happened because the
subjects were irrelevant, some to update new information while several topics
were removed earlier to minimise burden on students cause by the COVID-19
pandemic and reduce duplication of content.

Rome LGBTQ+ Pride parade celebrates 30th anniversary,
makes fun of Pope Francis comments
Jun 16, 2024
(AP photo)
------------
NEW DELHI: Rome's LGBTQ+ Pride parade marked its 30th
anniversary on Saturday with tens of thousands of attendees. Participants
donned brightly coloured outfits, waving banners, dancing, and singing through
the Italian capital to celebrate gay rights and humorously criticise Pope
Francis.
The parade followed a recent incident where Pope
Francis issued an apology after Italian media reported that he had used the
term "faggotness" during a meeting. The Pope reportedly used the term
to reaffirm the Vatican's ban on allowing gay men to enter seminaries and be
ordained priests.
"Attention, from here on high levels of
faggotry," read a sign on a large motorcycle ridden by a woman in a
rainbow-coloured hat leading the parade.
EllySchlein, the leader of Italy's main opposition
party, participated in the parade, dancing on a float. Schlein is a strong
advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, in stark contrast to Italian Premier GiorgiaMeloni.
Meloni's Brothers of Italy party opposes marriage
equality, same-sex parents adopting children, and surrogate pregnancies. Last
year, the far-right government limited recognition of parental rights to the
biological parent in same-sex families.
Another sign targeted Gen. Roberto Vannacci, a newly
elected member of Parliament with the right-wing League party, who was fired by
Italy's defense minister for writing a controversial book.
"If according to Vannacci the LGBTQIA+ is a
minority ... he has never met the seminarians of Pope Francis," read a
sign referencing the general.

Hajj pilgrims begin ‘stoning of the devil’ ritual as
Muslims mark Eid Al Adha
IsmaeelNaar
Jun 16, 2024
Muslim pilgrims perform the symbolic 'stoning of the
devil' ritual as part of the hajj pilgrimage in Mina, near Saudi Arabia's holy
city of Mecca, June 16, 2024.
-------------
After spending the previous night camped out in the
open air in Muzdalifah, Hajj pilgrims made their way back to Mina and Makkah on
Sunday to perform the final rites of the pilgrimage, one of which is the
"stoning of the devil" ritual.
Hajj pilgrims returned to the Grand Mosque in Makkah
from the Muzdalifah plains early on Sunday to perform Eid Al Adha prayers and
start the rites of Jamarat.
The ritual involves casting stones at three pillars
that symbolise the devil. On the first day of Eid, pilgrims throw small pebbles
or stones, gathered in Muzdalifah, at the Great Aqaba column.
The ritual symbolises the experience of the Prophet
Ibrahim, who the devil tried to dissuade from obeying God’s order to sacrifice
his son, Ismail.
The ritual will continue over the next two days,
before pilgrims perform the final Tawaf – the circumambulation of the Kaaba at
the Grande Mosque – to complete their Hajj.
Eid Al Adha is marked by prayers and the sacrifice of
a sheep, goat or cow by those who can afford it, with the meat shared among
family members and with the poor.
Muslims believe the Prophet Ibrahim was commanded by
God to sacrifice his son, Ismail, but God spared him and sent a ram in his
place.
The Jamarat Bridge is almost 1km long and allows for
nearly 300,000 pilgrims an hour to carry out the ritual. There are 28
escalators in each of the 11 towers in the structure of the main bridge, as
well as 20 in the two exits.
Hajj authorities have advised pilgrims to avoid
staying at the site for too long and to proceed back to their tents, to allow
others to carry out the ritual.
When the rite is completed on Sunday, pilgrims will
cut or trim their hair. Male pilgrims are advised to shave their heads before
the animal sacrifice, which is part of Eid. Pilgrims will return two more times
over Eid to continue the stoning ritual, or can have someone perform it on
their behalf.

Awami Muslim League chief accuses General Bajwa of
toppling Imran Khan-led government
Jun 16, 2024
Former Pakistan's prime minister Imran Khan, right and
General Qamar Javed Bajwa (PTI photo)
-------------
ISLAMABAD: Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed
Ahmed claimed there is no doubt that Pakistan's former Army Chief General
(retd) Qamar Bajwa was 'behind' the toppling of the Imran Khan-led government,
Pakistan-based ARY News reported.
In an exclusive interview with ARY News, Sheikh
Rasheed Ahmed said that he was aware that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf
(PTI)-led government was bound to be toppled.
Awami Muslim League chief said, "I told Imran
Khan that the MQM-P made it clear that the government is bound to be toppled as
signalled by the real forces," as reported by ARY News.
Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said, "No one has entered in
politics of Pakistan, including me, without (backing) of the Gate No. 4."
He stated that he does not see talks between the PTI and the Pakistan
government.
He said, "I am not seeing successful dialogue and
neither hopeful for it." Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said, "Initially they
were not holding talks, now they will not accept the conditions set for
dialogue."
Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz
(PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has been better than Pakistan Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif. He called the PML-N government a "show off" and
stressed that two months after Eid are crucial, ARY News reported.
He said, "Two months after Eid are crucial,
seeing decisive development by August." He added, "There might be
some new to come on surface," he added.
Earlier in May, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder
Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail, expressed his deepest
regret over trusting former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa while
in power, Dawn reported.
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan blamed Bajwa
for allegedly orchestrating his imprisonment and criticised Pakistan's
political and military leadership.
"My only regret is trusting General Bajwa,"
Imran lamented, accusing him of "creating lies and false narratives"
to secure a second extension as the military head. PTI founder's allegations
against Bajwa were detailed, suggesting a meticulous plan by the former army
chief, Dawn reported.
Imran Khan said, "I am certain that this ordeal
was orchestrated by General Bajwa. I hold no one else responsible. He
meticulously planned and executed this scheme, presenting himself as a
deceitful figure, creating lies and false narratives to cause national and international
chaos - all to secure his extension."

Kyrgyzstan Arrests 15 Alleged ISIS-Khorasan Supporters
By Fidel Rahmati
June 15, 2024
The Kyrgyzstan State Security Agency said on June 14,
“One of the leaders of this group was operating under the supervision of the
Khorasan branch of ISIS in Afghanistan.”
The State Security Agency of Kyrgyzstan also stated
that this radical group, which was secretly promoting ISIS ideology, was
identified and arrested, and their activities were halted.
Previously, the Tajikistan government also expressed
concern about the infiltration of extremist religious groups from the Afghan
border into their country and conducted joint military exercises with Russian
forces along the Afghan border.
Following a deadly attack on a concert hall in the
suburbs of Moscow, for which ISIS claimed responsibility, Central Asian
countries have become increasingly concerned about the subversive activities of
this group.
The activities of the ISIS Khorasan branch in
Afghanistan have caused significant concern for Central Asian countries
bordering Afghanistan. These countries have placed the fight against ISIS and
extremist Islamic groups at the forefront of their security agendas.
Although the majority of Kyrgyzstan’s population is
Muslim, the government adheres to secular values and suppresses jihadist
activities.
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, there
has been an increase in ISIS attacks in the region. This escalation has raised
concerns among regional and global powers about the potential spread of
instability and terrorism.
The increased ISIS activity has led to heightened
security measures and international cooperation to combat the threat. The
situation underscores the complex security challenges in Afghanistan and its
impact on regional stability.

Protests Erupt In Chhattisgarh Over Alleged Mob
Lynching Of Two Men Transporting Cattle, Investigation Delays
Ejaz Kaiser
16 Jun 2024,
RAIPUR: A prominent civil society group—'Chhattisgarh
Nagrik Samaj' held a demonstration at Ambedkar Chowk near Raipur collectorate
expressing serious concern over the alleged mob lynching incident that occurred
on June 7 at Arang, 40 km from Raipur and the "lack of transparency"
in the investigation.
Two youths Chand Miyan (24) and Guddu Khan (35) both
residents of Saharanpur (UP) were killed during the wee hours when they were on
their way to Odisha’s Sambalpur market from Mahasamund in Chhattisgarh transporting
buffaloes on a truck.
A third person, Saddam Qureshi with critical injuries
has been admitted to the hospital in Raipur. He is still not in a position to
give a statement.
Citing the incident as “shocking”, the members of
Chhattisgarh Nagrik Samaj, an umbrella organisation representing social
activists, various communities and senior citizens, said that even after nine
days a 14-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) failed to arrest anyone and
traced vital clues in the incident.
“Deaths of two Muslim youths after a scuffle occurred
under very suspicious circumstances. Many believe the SIT probe into the brutal
incident is not transparent. Such a premeditated plan killing two youths never
happened in Chhattisgarh. The administration evidently lacks willpower owing to
some outside interference. So, we have submitted a memorandum to the Governor
requesting for issuing a directive to ensure a transparent investigation led by
a capable upright officer,” said Dr Rakesh Gupta, co-convener of the Chhattisgarh
Nagrik Samaj.

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali:
Difficult To Work In Bollywood Because Of My Muslim Identity
June 16, 2024
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently celebrated his
long-awaited return to form with the musical biopic Amar Singh Chamkila,
starring DiljitDosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. A major theme of the movie was
artistic freedom in oppressive times, with the titular protagonist ultimately
sacrificing his life for his art. One of Imtiaz’s most widely shared interviews
saw him addressing questions about the exact same idea. The filmmaker, who is
celebrating his 53rd birthday on Sunday, rejected the suggestion that he finds
it difficult to work in Bollywood because of his Muslim identity, as he entered
into a combative back-and-forth with the interviewer.
The interview was conducted in 2019, a couple of years
after the disastrous Jab Harry Met Sejal, and over four years before the
release of Amar Singh Chamkila. “Is it difficult for a man named Imtiaz Ali, or
Khan, to work in the film industry these days?” he was asked. Imtiaz replied,
“You’re saying I face difficulties because of my name, my religion? Not at
all.” Asked about Karan Johar’s film My Name is Khan, and what it stood for,
Imtiaz said, “My Name is Khan is a very good film, about an important subject.
That film was for the entire world, and not just the Hindi film industry. Just
like how your entire country suffers because of a few bad apples, it’s the same
with religions.”

Muslim pilgrims converge at Mount Arafat for daylong
worship as Hajj reaches its peak
June 15, 2024
Following the footsteps of prophets beneath a burning
sun, Muslims from around the world congregated Saturday at a sacred hill in
Saudi Arabia for worship and reflection amid a sweltering heat.
The ritual at Mount Arafat, known as the hill of
mercy, is considered the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage. It is often the most
memorable for pilgrims, who stand together asking God for mercy, blessings,
prosperity and good health. The hill is about 20 kilometers (12 miles)
southeast of Mecca.
Thousands of pilgrims walked here through the predawn
darkness. On the slopes of the rocky hill and the surrounding area, many raised
their hands in worship with tears streaming down their faces.

Deconstructing internal fissures in ‘Muslim’ identity
June 16, 2024
Kashmir KaRisataGhaava (The Leaking Wound of Kashmir)
by Dr Kuldip Chand Agnihotri, New Delhi, Prabhat Prakashan, 2024. Pages: 280,
Price: Rs. 400/-
Dr (Professor) Kuldip Chand Agnihotri, who is an
eminent scholar in the field of Kashmir and Tibet Studies, in his above-cited
book has, perhaps, for the first time in the history of social sciences in
India, successfully deconstructed the internal fissures and fault-lines in the
hitherto homogenized “Muslim” identity of the majority of the Kashmiris living
in the Jammu and Kashmir region of
Bharat- before and after the abrogation of Article 370. It is worthwhile to
note here that the learned writer, in the writing of this book, steers clear of
the ideological and polemical leftist or Islamist rhetoric that marks most of
the Kashmir studies now-a-days. Dr Agnihori confronts the question – ” Who is
an Indian Muslim?” head on in this book showcasing the hitherto hidden ruptures
in the academic conceptualization of Indian Muslims as a “homogeneous”
community and interrogates the census-driven condition wherein anyone who is an
Indian and calls himself/ herself a Muslim is an Indian Muslim. The writer
superbly employs the sociological-empirical-critical approach in this book in
order to highlight the hitherto hidden but still continuing inhumane oppression
and exploitation of the majority of the (Ajlaf) Kashmiri Muslim population,
addressed as DM or desi Muslims by the writer, most of whom belong to the
downtrodden sections of local or native Hindus (most of them forcibly)converted
to Islam by the microscopic minority of the “Ashraf” ATM (Arabic, Turkic,
Mongol) or the Muslim elites.
In his thought-provoking “Preface” (titled-”
AapakeMuhalle Mein HamaaraaStautusKyaa Hai?” or What is our status in your
locality?”), Professor Agnihotri underlines the typical error that marks most
of the books written on the situation of Indian Muslims or Muslims in India:- ”
(These books) are laboriously written either by the dogmatic and partisan
supporters of the cause of Islam- obsessed with the presentation of Muslims of
India as a minority community or by those who doubt the patriotism of the
Muslims of India. This “doubt” regarding the loyalty of Indian Muslims to India
has further deepened after the partition of India… Till now even the social
scientists consider Indian Muslims as a “homogeneous” community- an error of
judgment even committed by as great a person as Mahatma Gandhi… No serious
sociological study has so far been done to critically examine the question-”
What is the identity of Indian Muslims?”( p.22). He narrates a personal
incident (1970-1972) when an ordinary Muslim – Ghulam Rasool Chauhan, whose
ancestors were forcibly converted to Islam long ago, approached him for
offering the libation to his ancestors (“Pitra- Tarpana”) and also apprised him
of how he feared the reaction of Muslim priests or Maulavis who would have
inflicted heavy punishment on him and his family for this action performed by
him (pp.25-26). The incident reminds the writer of the hitherto hidden fact of
the ruptures in the seemingly homogeneous Muslim community. Interestingly but
logically enough, the writer critically examines how, to begin with, the Muslim
“Ashraf” clerics manufactured “Urdu, which was but a form of Hindi, using
“Arabic” script in order to align Urdu with the religious identity of Desi or
converted Muslims. The writer aptly states that, in India, there are two
visible sections of Muslims- the Indians whose ancestors were forcibly
converted to Islam (Shia or Sunni)- who can, for critical convenience, be
called Indian or Desi Muslims; and the Muslims who came from outside India –
either as invaders or as employees or job-aspirants flocking to the courts of
the Muslim rulers. These two sections are separate from each other- socially as
well as culturally. The Muslims in the first category or section, that
constitute the huge majority of Indian Muslims, may well be called “DM or Desi
Muslims”; whereas the Muslims in the second category are of foreign origin-
Arab, Turk, Mughal and Mangol ( or ATM). Unfortunately these two rather
oppositional heterogeneous sections have been considered largely as one
“homogenous” community of Muslims in India in most of the sociological studies
in India.

Gaza Tests Historic Bond Between UK Muslims And Labour
In Upcoming Election
16 Jun 2024
KEIGHLEY (United Kingdom), June 16 — Gaza is a long
way from the picturesque foothills of the Yorkshire Dales but the issue could
swing UK general election races in northern England, with many local Muslims
angry at Labour’s stance.
While Labour is expected to win a thumping national
majority on July 4, leader Keir Starmer’s refusal to back an unconditional
ceasefire in Gaza has caused a split with once-loyal Muslim supporters.
That rift could influence the result in marginal seats
that have a sizeable Muslim population, such as Keighley and Ilkley in
Yorkshire.
Around four in five UK Muslims voted Labour in 2019,
reinforcing the historic links that were forged after the mass migration of
workers from Pakistan in the 1950s and 1960s.
But recent polling suggested around one in five of
those voters are set to defect, further weakening the country’s traditional
voting blocs.
“It’s definitely an issue... but I’m quite hopeful as
the election campaign goes on that I will retain a large part of the Muslim
vote where it’s a particular concern,” said Labour candidate John Grogan at his
Keighley campaign office, surrounded by boxes of “Vote Labour” posters and
flyers.

Kyiv to present Moscow peace proposal after
international agreement
Jun 16, 2024
Ukrainian President VolodymyrZelenskyy said Saturday
he would present Moscow a proposal for ending the war when it had been agreed
by the international community.
"We must decide together what a just peace means
for the world and how it can be achieved in a lasting way," Zelenskyy told
a major peace summit in central Switzerland, "then it will be communicated
to the representatives of Russia." He vowed to press ahead in broadening
international support for his war-battered nation as leaders risked falling
short in finding a path for a "just peace."
World leaders gathered at a Swiss mountain resort to
try to build support for Ukraine's peace proposals at a summit skipped by US
President Joe Biden, shunned by China and dismissed as a waste of time by
Moscow. China's absence from the two-day meeting and the attendance of
lower-level diplomats from the so-called BRICS states cast a shadow over
efforts to win over the Global South. But the Ukrainian leader said the
gathering would be the start of a process to force Russia to end its aggression
and secure peace.

Russia: Western reaction to proposal unconstructive
Jun 16, 2024
The Kremlin said on Saturday that the West has reacted
unconstructively to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposals for a new

a huge amount of it - official reaction, official statements. Of an
unconstructive nature," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has been quoted as
saying.
Putin set out on Friday what he said were Russia's
preconditions for starting peace talks with Ukraine, saying Russia would end
the war only if Kyiv agreed to drop its Nato ambitions and hand over four
provinces claimed by Moscow - demands Kyiv swiftly rejected as tantamount to
surrender.

UK elections: Polls predict 'electoral extinction' for
PM Sunak's Conservatives
Jun 16, 2024
NEW DELHI: As the date for general elections in UK
approaches, three opinion polls released on Saturday predicted low seat share
for the Conservatives, Reuters reported.
Cautioning British PM Sunak's party of "electoral
extinction", research company Savanta predicted 21% support for the
Conservatives, marking a drop by 4 points.
"Our research suggests that this election could
be nothing short of electoral extinction for the Conservative Party,"
Savanta's political research director Chris Hopkins said.
Meanwhile, Keir Starmer's Labour Party garnered 46%
support, marking a 2-point increase from the previous poll conducted five days
earlier. The survey was conducted for the Sunday Telegraph from June 12 to June
14. Labour Party's 25-point lead represents the widest margin since the tenure
of Sunak's predecessor, Liz Truss.

Greetings to the Muslims of Russia
June 16, 2024
“Eid al-Adha marks the end of the Muslim pilgrimage to
the ancient religious holy places. It serves to unite people and promote the

Eid Al Adha Commemorated By Muslims Worldwide
16-06-2024
Muslims across the United Arab Emirates and around the
globe ushered in the holy festival of Eid Al Adha with prayers and celebrations
on Sunday, June 16th.
Eid Al Adha, also called the Feast of Sacrifice, is
one of the two major Islamic festivals observed annually. It commemorates
Prophet Ibrahim’s ultimate test of faith when God commanded him to sacrifice his
son Ismail, before providing a lamb as a substitute. The day began with special
Eid prayers and the ritual of sacrificing, reenacting Ibrahim’s willingness to
make the ultimate sacrifice out of obedience to God.
In Saudi Arabia, the spiritual highpoint was the
gathering of over 1.5 million pilgrims from 180 countries at Muzdalifah after
descending from Mount Arafat – a key ritual of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that
coincides with Eid Al Adha. Falling in Zil Hajj, the 12th and final month of
the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid Al Adha holds supreme significance as it
represents the values of devotion, faith and divine intervention.

Pilgrims commence the final rites of Hajj as Muslims
celebrate Eid al-Adha
SAMY MAGDY
June 16, 2024
MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Masses of pilgrims on Sunday
embarked on a symbolic stoning of the devil in Saudi Arabia. The ritual marks
the final days of Hajj pilgrimage and the start of the Eid al-Adha celebrations
for Muslims around the world.
The stoning is among the final rites of the Hajj,
which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It came a day after more than 1.8
million pilgrims congregated on a sacred hill in Mount Ararat outside the holy
city of Mecca, which Muslim pilgrims visit to perform the annual five-day
rituals of Hajj.
The pilgrims left Mount Arafat on Saturday evening to
spend their night in a nearby site known as Muzdalifa, where they collected
pebbles they have used in the symbolic stoning of pillars representing the
devil.
The pillars are in another sacred place in Mecca,
called Mina, where Muslims believe Ibrahim’s faith was tested when God
commanded him to sacrifice his only son Ismail. Ibrahim was prepared to submit
to the command, but then God stayed his hand, sparing his son. In the Christian
and Jewish version of the story, Abraham is ordered to kill his other son,
Isaac.

Haj sermon calls upon Muslims to sink differences
June 16, 2024
MOUNT ARAFAT: The ummah must sink its differences to
thwart the designs of anti-Muslim forces and to protect its interests at a time
when “the forces of evil are out to rob us of our rights and dignity”, the Imam
of Makkah’s Grand Mosque said in his Haj sermon from Masjid Nimra on Saturday.
“Muslims should strive for progress in this world as
well as for salvation in the hereafter. Every Muslim must try to make himself a
personification of piety so that others see Islam as a source of guidance and
inspiration,” Sheikh Maher Bin Hamad said.
Sheikh Maher invoked a verse from the Holy Quran to
emphasise that justice is the bedrock of an ideal society. “Indeed, Allah
commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between
people to judge with justice.”
The Imam asked the ummah to spare a thought for
hapless Palestinians who are up against a “brutal state bent upon their
extermination”.
He cited verses from the Holy Quran to stress that the
Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) is a role model for every Muslim. “O Allah,
forgive Muslim men and women, and protect them from all evil. Preserve for them
their religion, their safety, their lives, their wealth, their minds, and their
honour,” he said in soul-stirring words.
Earlier, more than 1.5 million Muslims braved extreme
heat to reach Mount Arafat for the high point of Haj, praying for hours,
especially for Palestinians in Gaza.

Pakistan
SC moved against plea dismissal by IHC in Tyrian White
case
Nasir Iqbal
June 16, 2024
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was moved by a private
citizen on Saturday against the dismissal of his petition seeking ex-premier
Imran Khan’s disqualification for allegedly concealing his daughter Tyrian Khan
White in the nomination papers for 2018 general elections.
The petitioner, Mohammad Sajid, through his counsel
Saad Mumtaz Hashmi, pleaded that the full bench of the Islamabad High Court
(IHC) that dismissed his petition has erred in considering the concurring
opinion of two of the three judges as court judgment though it had been
reserved and not announced.
The ex-premier did not mention the existence of his
alleged daughter, Tyrian Khan White, when he filed nomination papers to contest
election from Mianwali constituency (NA-95) on June 11, 2018, as he only
furnished the details of his spouse, Bushra Bibi, and two sons living abroad,
namely Qasim Khan and Sulaiman Khan, the petitioner argued, adding that since
Mr Khan furnished a false affidavit, he was liable to be disqualified as per
the principle laid down in the 2018 Habib Akram case.
The petition pleaded that it was an undeniable fact
that Tyrian Khan White, born on June 15, 1992, was the real daughter of Mr Khan
after she and her paternity was confirmed by the judicial record in the courts
in California, the United States.

Govt departments causing ‘billions in losses’ to be
shut down: PM Shehbaz
June 15, 2024
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that
government departments and institutions incurring billions in losses to the
nation and the exchequer would be shut down once a committee finished its
review of the matter.
In an address to the nation today, the prime minister
said it was the first duty of the government to reduce lavish expenses and
close departments and ministries not related to public service such as the
Pakistan Public Works Department, saying it was included among those
institutions that were infamous for corruption.
He said a ministerial committee was made to deliberate
on the issue of such redundant ministries and departments, saying he would
bring positive results in the next two months and all such departments which
had become a burden on the country and its people would be shut down.
He further said that the government had decided that
all those organisations and institutions which were becoming a basis for losses
worth billions to the country would be privatised and those amounts recouped.
The premier said the government had decided to save
expenses wherever possible and adopt austerity. PM Shehbaz said the government
would no longer set up businesses of its own but would promote the private
sector and private investment.
The premier recounted how the coalition government of
the Pakistan Democratic Movement had taken the reins of power in April 2022 and
saved the country from default. He credited the leaders of the coalition and
its allies for the achievement, mentioning Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief
Fazlur Rehman as well.
He said the journey ahead was not only difficult and
long but also demanded “sacrifice” from the elites and government
functionaries. “The whole nation’s gaze is focused on the government and how we
will bring a revolution of prosperity in the country by ending its economic
troubles.”
PM Shehbaz said since the PML-N had assumed control of
the government again after the February 8 elections and he was re-elected as
the premier, inflation had dropped to 12 per cent due to the government’s
efforts, terming it a “positive change”.

Supreme Court: Arafah, Eid Announced Based on Sharia
Ruling
15-06-2024
The Supreme Court told TOLOnews that the announcement
of the days of Arafah and Eid al-Adha was made according to a Sharia ruling,
which declared tomorrow (Sunday) as Arafah and Monday as the first day of Eid
al-Adha in the country.
Abdul Rahim Rashid, spokesperson for the Supreme
Court, told TOLOnews that due to the significant distance between Afghanistan
and Saudi Arabia, different countries may observe these days on different
dates. He said: “In Hanafi jurisprudence, there is a concept called ‘Ikhtilaf al-Matali,’
which means that for countries that are far apart and have considerable
distance between them, the local moon sighting is what matters. For the people
of Saudi Arabia and its nearby countries, their own moon sighting is valid, and
for Afghanistan and other countries, their own sighting is valid.”
“We fast here, sacrifice here, and celebrate Eid based
on our own sighting. The virtue of fasting on Arafah is also based on our local
sighting, not according to Saudi Arabia,” Haseebullah Hanafi, a religious
scholar, told TOLOnews.

Muted Eid celebrations for millions of Nigerian
Muslims
16-06-2024
By Mansur Abubakar
“I have slaughtered a ram every year starting from
1976 but this year I can't, I just can't.”
Like many other Muslims in Nigeria, 78-year-old
MallamKabiruTudun Wada is not celebrating Eid al-Adha as he normally would
because of the cost-of-living crisis.
Muslims around the world traditionally slaughter a ram
or another animal on Eid al-Adha, in memory of the prophet Ibrahim's
willingness to sacrifice his own son when God ordered him to.
The meat is used to prepare a huge feast for the
entire family, while friends and neighbours visit each other and eat the food
each family has prepared.
“In years gone by I could afford at least one ram but
things have never been tighter,” Mr Wada told the BBC in the city of Kano, the
largest city in northern Nigeria, where the vast majority of people are Muslim.
Annual inflation - the average rate at which prices go
up - is now over 30%, the highest figure in nearly three decades. The cost of
food has risen even more - by 50%.

A usually joyous Muslim holiday reminds families in
Gaza of war’s punishing toll
16-06-2024
Last summer, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip celebrated
the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Adha the way it’s supposed to be: with large
family feasts, meat shared with those less fortunate, and new clothes and gifts
for children.
But this year, after eight months of devastating war
between Israel and Hamas, many families will eat canned food in stifling tents.
There’s hardly any meat or livestock at local markets, and no money for holiday
treats or presents — only war, hunger and misery, with no end in sight.
“There is no Eid this year,” said Nadia Hamouda, whose
daughter was killed in the war and who fled from her home in northern Gaza
months ago and is staying in a tent in the central town of Deir al-Balah. “When
we hear the call to prayer, we cry over those we lost and the things we lost,
and what has happened to us, and how we used to live before.”

Saturday that saw Tehran release a European Union diplomat and another man for
an Iranian convicted in Stockholm of committing war crimes over his part in
1988 mass executions in the Islamic Republic.
The arrest of Hamid Nouri by Sweden in 2019 as he
travelled there as a tourist likely sparked the detentions of the two Swedes,
part of a long-running strategy by Iran since its 1979 Islamic Revolution to
use those with ties abroad as chip in negotiations with the West.
As Iranian state television claimed without evidence
that Nouri had been illegally detained, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson
described the detentions of diplomat Johan Floderus and Saeed Azizi as a hell
on earth the two men faced.
Iran has made these Swedes pawns in a cynical
negotiation game with the aim of getting the Iranian citizen Hamid Nouri
released from Sweden," Kristersson said. It has been clear all along that
this operation would require difficult decisions, now the government has made
those decisions."
Oman, a sultanate on the eastern edge of the Arabian
Peninsula, mediated the release, its state-run news agency reported. Oman long
has served as an interlocutor between Iran and the West.

Biden looks to Hollywood for '24 boost. It hasn't been
that simple
Jun 16, 2024
Joe Biden is banking on Hollywood's A-list to help
propel him to victory in Nov, but their star power has yielded a mixed bag for
the embattled President. Big-name actors and musicians, from Robert De Niro to
Barbara Streisand, have enticed donors to back Biden's re-election effort but
there's little evidence they've energized their fans to come out in support of
him. Meanwhile, a cadre of younger stars have yet to publicly back Biden in his
race against Republican Donald Trump.
Biden's team has struggled to make endorsements stick
this year, especially among young people displeased with his handling of the
Israel-Hamas war and other issues. The toxic nature of the nation's political
debate may also be keeping celebrities on the sidelines. "There is a
difference between motivating donors and motivating voters," said Aubrey
Montgomery, president of Democratic consulting firm Rittenhouse Political
Partners.
Arguably the two biggest US musicians - Beyonce, a
vocal supporter of Obama, and Taylor Swift - have yet to endorse Biden this
year. Swift has a massive following with younger voters that has grown as she
toured at sold-out stadiums over the past year.
Still, Biden's Hollywood support has helped him rack
up a cash advantage against Trump - albeit one the former president has started
to close. DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg is Biden's campaign co-chair
and has leveraged his relationships into financial support. Director Steven
Spielberg is helping with messaging efforts for the Democratic National Convention
in August.

Mecca without Hajj Visa
Hendro Dahlan Situmorang
June 16, 2024
Jakarta. The Indonesian government has blamed travel
agencies for arranging Hajj pilgrimages without obtaining the required Hajj
visas, resulting in over 200 Indonesian pilgrims being denied entry to Mecca by
Saudi authorities.
Suviyanto, a senior official with the Religious
Affairs Ministry, said a Hajj visa is the primary requirement for pilgrims
worldwide to perform the annual religious ritual.
"The Saudi government prohibits foreigners with

Parent groups in several states continue to push back
on DLP taught in BM, says there are other ways to improve national language
By Soo Wern Jun
16 Jun 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Parents in several states who
enrolled their children in schools where the Dual Language Programme (DLP) is
available are insisting that the Ministry of Education (MOE) review the
decision of directing schools to allocate at least one class that teaches the
DLP subjects in Bahasa Malaysia.
After resistance from Melaka Action Group for Parents
in Education (Magpie) on the decision, Parent-Teacher Associations from 11
SekolahMenengahJenisKebangsaan and SekolahMenengahCina in Penang had on
Wednesday (June 5) joined calls to request the MOE to honour parents’
preferences and retain the original intent of the DLP for Science and
Mathematics subjects.
Magpie chairman Mak Chee Kin, however said it has been
almost a month since they raised the matter through the media, and have not
received any engagement from the MOE.
"(In the 12 schools), there is no demand for DLP
to be taught in Bahasa Malaysia; the schools faced no problems and in fact are
doing very well, the principals are happy and have plans to carry on with he
DLP as it is.
