Pakistani Muslims continue fighting 14 centuries-old Arab battle in the midst of raging flood devastation

30 supporters of 4th caliph Hazrat Ali killed, 200  injured

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

September 1, 2010

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) -- Three bombs ripped through a Shiite Muslim religious procession in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Wednesday, killing at least 30 people and wounding 210 others, officials said.

The explosions appeared to be the latest in a string of attacks by Sunni extremists against the minority Shiites they consider infidels. Allied with al-Qaida and the Taliban, the bombers are also seeking to destabilize Pakistan's U.S.-backed government.

The blasts were the first major attacks since Pakistan was hit by devastating floods more than a month ago. Lahore, the country's political capital and home to much of its military elite, has been regularly targeted by militants over the past two years.

The bombs exploded at three separate sites Wednesday evening as 35,000 Shiites marched through the streets of Lahore in their traditional mourning procession for the caliph Ali, one of Shiite Islam's most respected holy men.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blasts in a statement and said the attackers would not escape justice.

After the blasts, the marchers erupted in fury, setting fire to a police station, another police facility, two police cars and three motorcycles, said Zulfiqar Hameed, a senior police officer. Police lobbed tear gas canisters at the crowd and fired shots in the air to disperse the assailants, he said.

The first blast was a time bomb that exploded in the street near a well-known Shiite building, Hameed said. Footage of that explosion shown on Geo television showed a small blast erupting amid a crowd of people on the street followed by a large plume of smoke. Hundreds of people fled from the blast, while others rushed to the area to carry the wounded to safety.

Minutes later, with the streets in chaos, a male suicide bomber who appeared about 18 years old tried to force his way into an area where food was being prepared for the marchers to break the traditional Ramadan fast and exploded, Hameed said. Soon after, another suicide bomber detonated himself at an intersection near the end of the procession.

Abbas Kumaili, a prominent Shiite scholar as well as a senator, called for three days of mourning over the attack and lashed out at the bombers.

''They are our enemies, both Shiites and Sunnis should remain united and foil their evil designs,'' he said.

The blasts killed 25 people and wounded about 150 others, said Sajjad Bhutta, a top local government official.

Hours earlier, three people were wounded in a shooting near a similar Shiite procession in the southern city of Karachi, but senior police officer Iqbal Mahmood said the incident did not target the march.

Islamist extremists have a history of attacking Shiites, non-Muslims and others they deem unacceptable.

In July, twin suicide attacks at Pakistan's most popular Sufi shrine killed 42 people. Another suicide bomber wounded eight worshippers at a Shiite mosque in eastern Pakistan.

Meanwhile, a bomb exploded near a police vehicle in the town of Shabqadar in northwest Pakistan, killing one passer-by and wounding 15 people including one police officer, police officer Nisar Khan said.

The bombings came after Pakistan army jets and helicopters targeted militant hide-outs near the Afghan border, killing 60 people identified as insurgents or their family members, including children, said security officials and a witness.

The attacks occurred Tuesday and Wednesday in different parts of the region.

There was no independent confirmation of the casualty figures because the area is too dangerous for outsiders to visit.

The raids Tuesday took place in several villages in Teerah Valley in the Khyber region and killed 45 people, the officials said. One official said some vehicles rigged with explosives had also been destroyed. He could not say how many.

He described the dead as insurgents, but said it was possible that people living with them could also have been killed. Separately, an intelligence officer said some women and children had been killed in the attacks.

Jihad Gul, who lives near one of the villages, said he had seen the bodies of at least 20 women and children.

Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said reports of civilian casualties were unconfirmed.

The security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

An air attack Wednesday in the adjoining district of Orakzai killed 15 suspected militants and wounded 10 others, according to local government official Jamil Khan and a brief army statement.

Pakistan's army has been fighting Islamist militants in different parts of the northwest for more than two years.

Militants who fled major operations in the South Waziristan and Orakzai tribal regions are believed to have set up new bases in Khyber, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of the main city in the region, Peshawar.

Associated Press Writers Hussain Afzal in Parachinar and Riaz Khan in Peshawar contributed to this report.

Triple terror blasts in Lahore leave 27 dead

By Muhammad Faisal Ali

02 Sep, 2010

LAHORE: At least 27 people were killed and more than 200 injured in three bomb attacks near Karbala Gamay Shah on a procession taken out on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA). A child was among the dead.

Reacting violently to the explosions, people in the procession attacked a police building, set public property on fire and fought with riot police for more than an hour.

The blasts, two of which the police confirmed were suicide attacks, took place in a span of 20 minutes despite what appeared to be tight police security.

Witnesses said a suicide bomber blew himself up at a security barrier at Karbala Gamay Shah chowk at around 7pm when a large number of people were there after the culmination of the main procession.

According to the website of an Urdu newspaper, the group named Lashkar-i-Jhanghvi Al Aalmi claimed responsibility for the attack. Police said they had no information about any such claim.

The attack came at a time when all those connected with the procession must have been looking forward to relax after a day of fasting and mourning. They had broken the fast and the Maghrib prayers were to be offered.

The procession had reached the destination and the law-enforcement personnel must have heaved a sigh of relief at having seen the rally through.

The attack was followed five minutes later by another blast, said to be caused by a timed device, around the nearby Bhati chowk.

The third blast, again a suicide attack, took place at the traffic signal at the chowk.

People, including women and children, fled in all directions in panic.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (operations) Rao Sardar Ali Khan told Dawn that the two bombers had exploded themselves after having been stopped at barriers by policemen. At least seven policemen were injured.

The DIG said police had found two skulls and limbs believed to be of the suicide bombers and sent them for forensic examination.

He said police were uncertain about the nature of the third blast which also could have been a suicide explosion.

He said police had anticipated that such attacks could take place and maximum security measures had been taken for the procession.

People started raising slogans against police after the second blast.

As soon as the third blast took place, they divided into groups, pelted police with stones and set government and private vehicles on fire.

A large number of policemen, who were also divided into groups to counter the protesters, first acted in a defensive manner. But after the mob let off a volley of stones on the Lower Mall police station and set some motorcycles and vehicles on fire, they hit back.

Riot police fired in the air to disperse the mob.

The protesters damaged both gates and lights of the city division police building.

Police managed to disperse the mob at about 8.30pm.

The protesters criticised police for failing to maintain security and chanted slogans against the PML-N leadership and the Punjab police.

“A bearded suicide bomber managed to sneak past the first barrier and blew himself up at the second,” Mohammad Waseem of Pakpattan, who was serving drinks to people after the Iftar, said.

Soon after the first blast, police cordoned off the area and did not allow people to leave, he said.

A young woman running away from the area with a child in her arms cried out aloud: “Policemen are saying that a transformer has exploded, but my sister has been killed in the blast. She had small children.”

Ambulances of Rescue 1122, Edhi and other services shifted the injured to the Mayo, Services and Ganga Ram hospitals where a state of emergency was declared.

The fires were extinguished after the protesters had been dispersed.

Some Rangers’ vehicles also arrived at the place.

Two cases have been registered by the New Anarkali and Bhatti Gate police under the Pakistan Penal Code and the Explosives and Anti-Terrorism Acts.

Police and Rangers personnel maintained strict security in the area till late in the night.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced a compensation of Rs500,000 for the heirs of each of those killed and Rs75,000 for each injured person.

Palestinians crack down on Hamas after shooting

2010-09-01

Palestinian security forces arrested more than 250 Hamas members in an overnight sweep throughout the West Bank after the Islamic militant group claimed responsibility for shooting dead four Israelis on the eve of new Mideast peace talks.

With the Wednesday arrests, the government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appeared to be trying to send a stern message to both its Hamas rivals and to Israel that it is committed to the new peace talks. Hamas condemned the crackdown as "treason."

In Washington, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late Tuesday he would not let the shooting derail the negotiations.

Israel and the Palestinians are in Washington to begin talks aimed at creating an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. The talks are to focus on core issues of the conflict, including the status of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as capital of their future state.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — News accounts of what the Pakistani military has called the mistreatment of a delegation at Washington’s Dulles International Airport this week further inflamed tensions in the relationship between the United States and Pakistan.

A spokesman for the Pakistani military, Gen. Athar Abbas, criticized the removal of an official delegation from a flight bound for Tampa, Fla., where they were to have visited the United States Central Command. Israel hints Jerusalem compromise in peace talks

02 Sep, 2010

WASHINGTON/JERUSALEM - Israel’s defence minister said on Wednesday the Jewish state would be willing to hand over parts of Jerusalem in peace talks with the Palestinians to be launched by US President Barack Obama.

A flare-up of violence in the occupied West Bank and a deadlock over Jewish settlements there loom as potential deal-breakers for Obama, who will host Middle East leaders for dinner at the White House in Washington.

Obama brought Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas together for face-to-face negotiations after months of US-mediated indirect talks. But he faces deep skepticism about his chances of success.

Lukewarm reaction to NY imam's Mideast tour

02 Sep, 2010

The US debate over a planned Islamic centre near New York’s World Trade Center site is seen by Middle East media, scholars and citizens as more of a domestic issue.

Kuwait-born Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Muslim cleric leading the project to establish the centre, has been in Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in the past two weeks but met with a more subdued reaction than the US media.

“Muslims this time are not part of this, they didn’t call for it, they didn’t defend it and didn’t bother with the whole issue,” Saudi columnist, Abdulrahman al-Rashid, wrote in the pan-Arab daily Asharq Alawsat.

The US row is perceived as much less of an affront to Islam than Switzerland’s vote to ban minarets and France’s moves to forbid the full face veil, observers say.

Asked whether the American people were becoming more intolerant, the Imam Abdul Rauf played down American prejudice.

UN prosecutor says won’t rush Hariri indictment

02 Sep, 2010

BEIRUT - The UN prosecutor investigating the killing of Lebanon’s former premier Rafik al-Hariri said he would not rush to indict suspects, dampening expectations of imminent indictments which had raised tensions in Lebanon.

“Let me state clearly that the indictment has not been drafted yet,” Daniel Bellemare said in an rare media interview published by the website NOW Lebanon. “I will only file the indictment when I am satisfied there is enough evidence”.

Media reports had said that Bellemare could issue indictments this month against members of the Shi’ite guerrilla group Hezbollah in connection with the 2005 bombing which killed Hariri and 22 other people.

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who has denied any Hezbollah involvement in the killing and called the UN tribunal an “Israeli project”, stepped up his criticism in recent weeks.

Blair’s Memoirs Reveal ‘Tears’ but No Regrets on Iraq

By ALAN COWELL

02 Sep, 2010

As the United States ends it combat mission in Iraq, Tony Blair, the former British prime minister who deployed troops alongside American forces in the 2003 invasion, said Wednesday that, while there had been many tears over the loss of life, he could not regard the war as a mistake.

Mr. Blair’s latest iteration of his attitude to the conflict — echoing similar arguments during a public inquiry into the war earlier this year — came with the publication of his memoirs, “A Journey.” The book went on sale in Britain the morning after President Obama said in a televised speech Tuesday night from the Oval Office that, with United States forces assuming a support and training mission in Iraq, it was “time to turn the page” after seven years of combat.

Leaders Call for Peace as Mideast Talks Begin

By HELENE COOPER and MARK LANDLER

02 Sep, 2010

WASHINGTON — President Obama began his Middle East peace initiative on Wednesday, as the Israeli and Palestinian leaders committed to work to end the conflict that has endured for six decades.

In a remarkable tableau at the White House, Mr. Obama, flanked by the leaders of Israel, the Palestinians and the only two Arab states with whom Israel has made peace, vowed to do everything within his power in the next year to achieve the comprehensive agreement that has eluded negotiators since Israel was established.

“We are but five men,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday night. “But when we come together, we will not be alone. We will be joined by the generations of those who have gone before.”

Bomb attack kills Afghan Muslim religious leader

01 Sep, 2010

KABUL: A bomb attack Wednesday in Afghanistan’s volatile southern city of Kandahar killed the director of the local office for facilitating pilgrimages to Islamic holy sites, police said.

One other person was killed in the attack on Mohammad Hassan Taimuri and two people wounded, Kandahar police chief Sher Mohammed Zazai said.

The bomb appeared to be a remote controlled device concealed on a motorcycle which exploded Wednesday morning just as the director was leaving his office, according to witness Asad Jan Aghra.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and it was not clear why anyone would target the director, whose job makes him responsible for managing Islamic religious institutions and arranging pilgrimages to the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The pilgrimages are called the hajj, which Muslims are obligated to make at least once in a lifetime.

"The story is not true and totally fabricated," Pakistan's ambassador to China, Masood Khan, told the state-run 'Global Times' daily.

He was referring to a New York Times report which said that about 7,000 to 11,000 Chinese troops were deployed in the strategic Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Pakistan faced a state of rebellion from the local people.

US Forcing Muslims to Register on Database?

Sep 01, 2010

Some may say who listens to AM radio anymore? Nonetheless still a scary poll.

70 percent of 760 AM listeners support forcing Muslims to register on a national database

760 KFMB AM is a talk radio station hosting such conservative luminaries as Michael Savage, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin. Today, below the Wiener Dog racing and ads for the Sean Hannity Freedom Concert is a fun little poll that asks listeners:

During a time of war, should we register as many practicing Muslims as we can find in a national database?

No – it’s an invasion of privacy.

Yes- gun owners have to, why not Muslims?

Currently, 70% of those polled are in favor of forced registration for American Muslims. Granted, this is not a representative sampling of the general population, but it none the less contributes to a disturbing trend of national opinion about Islam.

Afghan Women Still Struggling For Their Rights

Sep 01, 2010

This is what will happen to Afghan women if America leaves the country to the Taliban and terrorists.

Obviously this is an example of recent events in Afghanistan.  Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t include this very disturbing picture of a young girl whose nose and ears were removed because she tried to run away from her abusive husband.  The question Time Magazine asks is, “What Happens If We Leave Afghanistan?”.

Indeed, that is the question.  We know what happened when the Taliban came to power in 1996 and was overthrown in late 2001.  I found this list of some of the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on Afghan women. While in power, the Taliban enforced one of the strictest interpretations of Sharia law ever seen in the Muslim world, and became notorious internationally for their treatment of women.

Bangladesh minister slammed for comments on Janmashtami

Sep 01, 2010

A call by Bangladesh Home Minister Sahara Khatun to the minority Hindu community to observe Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, ''peacefully'' and end it by 5 p.m. on Wednesday in time for the end of ''roza'' has been criticised by the nation's media.

The minister's call has been termed "overtly discriminatory" in an editorial on Tuesday in the New Age newspaper that warned: "Secularist safeguard may backfire when the issue is addressed from the wrong angle and with a loaded mindset."

The minister made her "request" at a meeting with leaders of the National Puja Udjapan Committee Sunday when, while discussing security measures, she urged the Hindu community not to use loudspeakers during the period of iftar, the ending of fast by the Muslim community, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) news agency reported on Tuesday.

Pakistan flood: India among top 10 aid-givers

ISLAMABAD: India's decision to increase its flood relief assistance to Pakistan from $ 5 million to $ 25 million has placed it among the top 10 countries/institutions which have loosened their purse strings the most to help Islamabad deal with the unfolding emergency.

Initially billed as “delayed and niggardly,” the Indian response now has catapulted the country to ninth position in the ‘Country-wise update of Foreign Assistance for Flood Affectees,' put out by the Economic Affairs Division of the Pakistan Government.

The last update was made on Monday afternoon — 24 hours before the announcement — and as per this list, the U. S. leads the pack with a commitment of $ 200 million, followed by the U. K., Saudi Public Relief Fund, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, Germany, Canada and the United Nations.

Coptic pope accused in convert’s incarceration

Sep 01, 2010

CAIRO: Egypt’s most senior Coptic Christian cleric, Pope Shenouda III, may be summoned to court and forced to release an alleged convert to Islam.

A group of Islamist lawyers has appealed to Egypt’s administrative court demanding that the Coptic Church release Camillia Shehata, the wife of a Coptic preacher, whom they allege has been forcibly incarcerated by the church. The court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 2.

Shehata, 24, left her home at the southern city of Dir-Moas in July and disappeared for five days. She was eventually found by Egyptian security forces and delivered to the church, where she is said to be currently held.

Originally, rumors surrounding Shehata’s possible kidnapping and forced conversion to Islam sparked anti-Muslim protests by Copts in the Egyptian capital Cairo and in Shehata’s province of Minya.

Last week's bloodshed, which killed three people, was nothing close to the worst this city has seen. But it has refocused attention on the bane of Lebanon's existence: the dozens of private armies that grew out of the country's 15-year civil war and still flourish 20 years after the conflict ended.

Floods in S.Sudan leave nearly 60,000 homeless

1 September 2010

JUBA, Sudan - Floods have displaced nearly 60,000 people in the last month in south Sudan with many at risk of malaria and other diseases, the semi-autonomous region’s government said on Tuesday.

The crisis is another hurdle for the war-ravaged south ahead of a referendum on independence in January, which some analysts fear will be hindered by a worsening humanitarian situation with almost half the region’s 8 million population short of food.

“In the last one month 57,135 people have been displaced by the floods,” said the south’s undersecretary for health Olivia Lomoro, adding that many were at risk of malaria and water-borne diseases.
