January 08, 2022
New Delhi: In an open letter, a group of students and
faculty members from the Indian Institute of Management requested Prime
Minister Narendra Modi to speak up against hate speech and caste-based violence
in the country.
"Your silence, Honourable Prime Minister,
emboldens the hate-filled voices and threatens the unity and integrity of our
country. We request you, Honourable Prime Minister, to stand firm against
forces that seek to divide us," the students and the faculty said in their
letter.
The letter comes in light of the recent Haridwar
Dharam sansad event where some Hindu religious leaders urged people to take up
arms against Muslims and called for genocide.
The signatories said that even though the Indian
Constitution provided the right to practice one's religion in dignity, there
was a sense of fear in the country.
"There is a sense of fear in our country now -
places of worship, including churches in recent days, are being vandalised, and
there have been calls to take arms against our Muslim brothers and sisters. All
of this is carried out with impunity and without any fear of due process,"
they wrote.
"Your silence, Honourable Prime Minister,
emboldens the hate-filled voices and threatens the unity and integrity of our
country. We request you, Honourable Prime Minister, to stand firm against
forces that seek to divide us," the students and the faculty said in their
letter.
The letter was signed by 183 signatories, including 13
faculty members, students and faculty members of IIM-Ahmedabad and
IIM-Bangalore.
At the Haridwar event, a Hindu religious leader - Sant
Kalicharan Maharaj - said that the aim of Islam was to capture the nation
through politics.
In the controversial speech, clips of which have gone
viral, Kalicharan Maharaj also urged people to elect a "staunch Hindu
leader" to "protect" Hinduism.

Supreme Court Decision To Set Blasphemy Accused On
Bail Hailed By Civil Society Activists of Pakistan
Supreme Court of Pakistan.
(Photo: AFP)
----
Staff Reporter
January 9, 2022
LAHORE: The civil society activists have hailed the
Supreme Court decision of granting bail to a man who had been in jail in an
alleged blasphemy case for the last four years.
Advocate Saiful Malook, the counsel for the accused,
said the Supreme Court judgement would act as a precedent to help other people
arrested under blasphemy charges because most of the time, the courts would
dismiss their bail.
He referenced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898
Section 497, which states that if an individual has not been formally charged
and the trial has not been concluded within two years and the delay is not due
to the accused, they should be granted bail.
Voice of Justice Chairman Joseph Jansen said the
majority of blasphemy cases rested on false accusations over property disputes/
personal vendetta/ religious prejudice rather than genuine instances of
blasphemy. He said sometimes the allegations would lead to mob violence against
the accused or the entire community.
He demanded that all those who incite or engage in
violence against others based on allegations of blasphemy should be brought to
justice and duly punished.
He said the accused persons would be facing
imprisonment for fabricated blasphemy charges and those in pending cases in
courts must also be granted bail to let them have access to a fair trial, which
includes the right to defence, the right to be tried by an independent and
impartial court and of the right to the presumption of innocence.
Bishop Johnson Robert observed that blasphemy laws do
not consider the principles of legality and the presumption of innocence, to
ascertain the intention of the accused persons as observed in the case of
Stephen Masih who is behind the bars for over two years over a fabricated
blasphemy accusation despite the reports of the medical board of the Punjab
Institute of Medical Health which stated that he suffers from Bipolar Affective
Disorder, and he is mentally unfit to stand trial.
He demanded that the honourable courts in Pakistan
should hear Stephen Masih’s case on an urgent basis and drop all charges
against him on account of false accusation, and his psychosocial disability and
health condition.
Alyas Samuel said that the misuse of blasphemy laws
have become so common which is exercised as a tool of revenge by making a
fabricated accusation against innocent people without bothering about its
consequence that the families of the accused have to face as observed in the
case of Shagufta Kiran who is facing imprisonment for being a part of a
WhatsApp group in which someone else created and shared an allegedly
objectionable post. She denies the allegation.
Asif Bastian said it is a practice that the accused
persons without committing any blasphemous offence are deprived of their
liberty and are made to spend several years in jail. While the complainants and
witnesses involved in levelling false allegations of blasphemy against the
accused enjoy impunity, the government needs to enforce the existing provisions
such as Section 182 of PPC to criminalise perjury, false and malicious
accusations.
Ashiknaz Khokhar said that the most people label the
blasphemy accused as guilty, and demand their beheading without proper
investigation or trial of the case, therefore the government needs to introduce
reforms to put in place adequate and effective procedural and institutional
safeguards at the investigative, prosecutorial and judicial levels including,
inter alia requiring evidence by accusers, ensuring proper investigation by
senior police officials, allowing authorities to dismiss unfounded accusations,
to ensure that the accused persons are not unjustly punished on the basis of
mere allegation.

Iranian Officials Admit People Hate Tyrannical Rule Of
The Mullahs
Iranian people confront
mullahs in the streets
-----
By Mahin Horri
January 8, 2022
The people of Iran are fed up with four decades of
tyrannical rule by the mullahs. And Iranian officials are openly expressing
their fear of the public outrage toward the mullahs.
On Friday, in a meeting with regime loyalists, Ahmad
Khatami, a senior regime official and member of the Guardian Council,
acknowledged that the people hate the mullahs by saying, “Some are trying to
separate religion and politics.”
In the same session, Khatami, whose remarks were
published by official IRNA news agency, expressed concern about the activities
of the supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
Khatami warned the mullahs and regime loyalists to avoid any actions that would
“encourage the MEK.”
Khatami is not the only official who has been warning
about the declining reputation of the mullahs. On January 4, in comments to the
state-run Hamdeli newspaper, Mohammad Taghi Fazel Meibodi, a member of the
Assembly of Teachers in Qom Seminary, said, “The people are blaming clerics for
the current situation.”
He also said, “Unfortunately, the people have a bad
view toward clerics. Many student clerics who go to the market to buy goods or
to go to stores try to do so without wearing clerical robes so that they are
not insulted.”
Meibodi added, “Today, clerics wear their religious
attire less in public appearances to avoid being uncomfortable. If a cleric
sits in a taxi, people will insult him. People blame the clerics for high
prices and all problems.”
In another article on January 4, Hamdeli warned about
the consequences of luxurious life of the mullahs. “The attention of clerics to
material life, the attraction of government and political positions, the
tendency of clerics of luxurious life and occupying important positions has
resulted in clerics seeking work opportunities in institutions and
organizations in industries, oil, sports, recreation, and even the meat
market.”
Mohammad Reza Zaeri, another mullah, wrote on
Instagram on January 7, “In the past 10 days, people have spitted on me, I’ve
been insulted, and right now, my Snap [Iranian ride-sharing app] driver made me
get off the car in the middle of the street! The people who should understand
and know, are they even aware of this level of hatred that we’ve been warning
about for years? No. Those who come and go with their personal drivers and
bodyguards aren’t held accountable. The driver emphasized three times that ‘I
don’t give rides to mullahs.’”
These officials and media are barely scratching the
surface with their remarks. The hatred of the people toward the ruling mullahs
is so intense that the videos of people confronting mullahs have become a
common scene on social media.
In one video that has been widely distributed on
social media, one person tells a mullah, “You are all filthy… this dog is
cleaner than [regime supreme leader Ali] Khamenei.”
Other manifestations of this hatred are the torching
of the posters and statues of regime leaders and icons such as the now-dead
terrorist commander Qassem Soleimani.
The flipside of the coin of the people’s hatred of the
mullahs’ regime is their gravitation toward the Iranian Resistance and the
Resistance Units. Every day, people from all ages and walks of life are
becoming attracted to the cause of the Iranian Resistance, which has been to
overthrow the mullahs’ regime and to replace it with a democratic state.
Therefore, while the remarks made by Khatami and
Meibodi, and Zaeri are notable, they are just the tip of the iceberg. The
people of Iran will make their feelings toward the mullahs’ regime very clear
in their protests and uprisings.

Arabic Music Institute To Be Established In Saudi
Arabia
The oud is one of the oldest
and most important stringed instruments in the Arab world’s musical heritage.

-----
Mai Almarzoogi
January 09, 2022
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Music Commission is establishing
an institute to train the country’s musical talent.
Bait Al-Oud seeks to be a learning center for
musicians so they can get the required training in playing traditional Arabic
instruments and be educated about the instruments’ role in developing the
region’s music culture.
The oud, which dates back more than 3,000 years, is
one of the oldest and most important stringed instruments in the Arab world’s
musical heritage and it has played a significant role through history.
The commission aims to develop the institute to be a
globally recognized center, spread awareness about Arabic musical instruments,
specifically the oud, and preserve the heritage of Arabic music.
“The oud is one of the most important musical stringed
instruments,” oud player Hasan Iskandrani told Arab News. “It has been called
the ‘sultan of instruments’ and is usually used by composers in shaping their
melodies.”
Traditional Arabic musical instruments such as the
oud, duf, rebab, and mizmar, which are used in many different celebrations in
the Kingdom, have played a major role in establishing the musical culture of
the country and its different forms of musical expression.
There are different types of oud - including Iraqi,
Syrian, Egyptian and Turkish — and it is played in different styles across the
region.
Alongside Al-Jowhar are Talal Salamah and Aseel Abu
Bakr Saleem who, to this day, are influencing an emerging new generation of
Saudi oud players.
The oud is distinctive for being fretless and
pear-shaped. It is traditionally made from lightwood, has a short neck, and is
normally built with 11 strings.
Being fretless, the oud is considered a versatile
instrument that gives musicians the freedom to produce more fluid notes without
having to retune.
And, unlike other string instruments which typically
have one large hole in the center, the oud can have up to three holes, which
gives it its distinctive and mesmerizing tune.
But, had it not been for some great musical maestros,
the legacy of the oud would have probably been lost. One cannot talk about the
instrument without mentioning the legends who made it what it is today.
The oud has passed through prominent musicians, from
the “King of Oud” Fared Al-Atrache, to Marcel Khalifeh in Lebanon, Munir Bashir
and Naseer Shamma in Iraq, and Mohamed Al-Qasabgi in Egypt.
There are many beliefs about where the instrument
originated from. It is believed that it evolved from the Persian barbat and was
used during the Kassite period and Babylon in Mesopotamia, which later made its
way to Europe through North Africa.
The institute, which will be run by an elite group of
musicians, also aims to be a regional hub for Saudis of all ages to learn and
develop techniques to play Arabic musical instruments.
“The Bait Al-Oud Institute will contribute to the
development of the various types of stringed instruments. In addition, it will
encourage the development of young music talent,” said Iskandrani. “Through the
institute, it will be a forum for great music legends and new emerging
musicians to share ideas, experiences, and culture for continuous development.”
The institute will also act as a platform for
musicians to share and perform their musical projects with audiences who enjoy
listening to oud performances.

Ahmadis Rocked By Rape Allegations After Its Spiritual
Leader 'Told Alleged Victim To Keep Quiet'
Pictured: The
13,000-capacity Baitul Futuh mosque in Morden, South-West London, where the
sect is based
-----
By Abul Taher
8 January 2022
A Muslim sect which built Britain’s biggest mosque has
been rocked by rape allegations involving its members and claims that its spiritual
leader warned the alleged victim against involving police.
The 36-year-old complainant belongs to the Ahmadi
sect, which has 30,000 followers in Britain under the leadership of Mirza
Masroor Ahmad, who has been feted by senior politicians, including Boris
Johnson and Theresa May.
But Imam Ahmad – dubbed ‘the caliph of suburbia’ for
basing the sect at the 13,000-capacity Baitul Futuh mosque in Morden,
South-West London – has been accused of trying to suppress the allegations
after a recording of a 44-minute telephone call with the alleged victim was
posted on the internet.
In it, the cleric appears to suggest that the woman
drop allegations that she was raped and sexually assaulted by her father and
three other sect members at addresses in London, Surrey, Dorset and the
Pakistani city of Rabwah, the group’s spiritual headquarters.
During the call, made in July, Imam Ahmad, 71, urged
the woman not to report her claims to police and wrongly says she will need
four witnesses to prove a rape claim.
But she is told: ‘My advice to you is that you drop
this case, even if something happened… Even if it has, I am sure those involved
would have asked for forgiveness already.’
The woman later wrote on Twitter: ‘Instead of
silencing victims, allegations of abuse should be properly investigated, and
perpetrators punished, not protected.’ A spokesman for the imam said: ‘The
allegation has been and continues to be taken extremely seriously.
‘After his conversation with the complainant, His
Holiness [Ahmad] referred the matter to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK for
immediate action. In turn, AMA UK promptly informed the Metropolitan Police,
whose investigation is ongoing. In light of the police involvement, we are
unable to comment further.’
The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was investigating
allegations of sexual assault between 1987 and 2012 and that a man had been
interviewed under caution.

Iran ups the nuclear ante in search of Vienna

DUBAI: Tehran’s proxies have been ramping up their
activities on the battlefields of the Middle East in recent weeks. In Iraq,
Syria, and Yemen, forces loyal to the Iranian regime have been busy, escalating
attacks against US and Saudi targets.
One spark for this intensification may be the second
anniversary of the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general who
set in motion much of the chaos still ravaging the region. But some analysts
believe the prime reason is the Iran-US nuclear talks that have resumed in

CAIR to release new Islamophobia report: $105M
funneled to 26 anti-Muslim groups
January 8, 2022
On Tuesday, January 11, the Council on
American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and
advocacy organization, plans to release its latest Islamophobia report. Titled
“Islamophobia in the Mainstream,” the report identifies 35 major charitable
institutions and foundations that funneled almost $106 million to 26
anti-Muslim groups between 2017-2019.
CAIR’s new “Islamophobia in the Mainstream” report
shows mainstream funding for Islamophobic organizations has dropped in recent years,
but such organizations continue to receive large sums of money through private
family foundations and mainstream donor-advised funds that are ultimately used
to spread bigotry against Muslims.

Hadi, seemingly backing MACC’s Azam Baki, claims trial
by media make ‘clean’ officials lame ducks
BY SYED JAYMAL ZAHIID
09 Jan 2022
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul
Hadi Awang hit out at the media today, accusing them of playing judge and
executioner in the stock trading controversy implicating the Malaysian
Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.
Abdul Hadi took to Facebook to lament the way the
press had covered the fiasco, taking aim at the concept of press freedom that
he suggested was responsible for putting the MACC chief commissioner in the
imbroglio that has called the latter’s credibility into question.
The PAS president, who himself has been severely
criticised for having done little as special envoy to the Middle East with a
ministerial pay-grade as well as member of Parliament, claimed that government
officials accused of power abuse and corruption have often been found guilty
even if the courts have yet to do so, which he attributed to press freedom as
advocated by the West.
