Woman gym trainer, father accused of converting UP bizman's son to Islam through 'Nikah trap'

Jun 8, 2026

SHAMLI: Police in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district have arrested a woman and her father and booked nine people in connection with the alleged religious conversion of a 30-year-old man, officials said on Sunday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Chandni Qureshi and her father, Islam Qureshi.

According to the complainant, Chandni worked as Ayush Malik's physiotherapist and gym trainer before allegedly developing a relationship with him.

According to a complaint filed by medicine trader Devraj Malik, his son Ayush Malik (30) was allegedly converted to Islam several years ago under the pretext of marriage.

The complainant alleged that Ayush was taken to Delhi, where a nikah was conducted using forged documents.

— PoliceShamli (@PoliceShamli)

Shamli superintendent of police NP Singh said a case has been registered against nine individuals, including a maulvi, under Sections 308 (extortion), 318 (cheating), 336 (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.

According to the police, the incident was part of a premeditated scheme in which the victim was allegedly lured into a romantic relationship, pressured to change his religion and later blackmailed for financial gain.

In a post on X, Shamli Police said two accused had been arrested from the Kaziwada locality under Kotwali police station limits in connection with the alleged coercion of a young man through emotional entrapment, blackmail and religious conversion for monetary benefits.

Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining accused named in the FIR.

Meanwhile, Hindu activists, including Swami Yashveer Maharaj, have demanded stringent action against those involved and warned of protests against alleged illegal religious conversions.

The police said strict action is being taken against individuals involved in unlawful activities, including forced conversions and blackmail, and urged residents to report any suspicious activity to help maintain law and order in the district.

Israel hits Iran with new strikes, intercepts fresh wave of missiles from Tehran

June 08, 2026

DUBAI/JERUSALEM/TEHRAN: The Israeli military said it had identified a second wave of missiles launched from Iran on Monday and its defensive systems were working to intercept them.

“Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat,” the military said.

Israel early Monday struck military targets in western and central Iran, even after US President Donald Trump reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from further attacks.

Iranian media said Israel had struck a petrochemical company at Mahshahr in southwestern Iran.

“The Zionist enemy has carried out an air attack on the Karoon Petrochemical Company in Mahshahr,” local media posted on Telegram.

It quoted a local law enforcement official as saying that Israeli projectiles struck the facility.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had struck Israel’s Nevatim and Tel Nof air bases. “The operation was carried out in response to a missile attack launched by the Zionist regime … against several radar sites in three different places” they said in a statement.

Hours earlier, Trump said new strikes by Israel and Iran would not affect his administration’s peace talks with Tehran, adding that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “doesn’t call the shots.” Trump has leaned on Israel to stop its attacks in Lebanon to allow room for a deal to end the wider war with Iran, including rebuking Netanyahu with obscenities in a phone call last week.

However, earlier on Sunday Israel launched strikes in the Beirut area for the first time since the US announced a truce plan for Lebanon last week.

Iran fired a salvo of missiles at Israeli targets in retaliation, putting US-Iran peace talks at risk. But Trump insisted that an agreement to end the wider war remained well within reach.

“It’s not going to have any impact on the deal,” Trump told the Financial Times. “I call the shots. I call all the shots. He (Netanyahu) doesn’t call the shots.”

A few hours later, Israel’s defense forces said they had struck Iranian military targets. The Revolutionary Guards said Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles in its attacks. “Everyone has had enough of this maniacal Iranian regime,” Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, said on X, adding that Iran had fired 11 ballistic missiles at Israel.

“No self-respecting country in the world would tolerate such an attack, and neither will Israel,” he said, adding that Israel was targeting Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launch sites, and infrastructure facilities unrelated to the energy sector.

The Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted Ramat David air base, near Nazareth. The Israeli military said it identified missiles launched from Iran and its defense systems had intercepted them.

As air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv, according to a Reuters witness, the Israeli military added it had identified the launch of a missile from Yemen toward its territory with aerial defense systems activated to intercept the threat. The attack is also the first from Yemen on Israel since the April 8 truce.

Trump urged Netanyahu to hold off further strikes

Trump spoke with Netanyahu by telephone from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, for a little less than half an hour on Sunday, an Israeli official said, without giving details.

The White House and the Israeli prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump told Netanyahu during the call to refrain from further strikes because “we are close to doing something good in terms of a deal,” according to a US official quoted by Axios.

Since the start of the talks, Israel has kept up attacks in Lebanon in a conflict with Hezbollah that Israeli officials insist should be treated separately from any Iran ceasefire. Tehran has long said any peace deal with the US would depend on a ceasefire also holding in Lebanon, which Israel invaded in March in pursuit of Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters who fired rockets and drones across the border in solidarity with Tehran.

Iran’s chief peace negotiator, Parliamentary Speaker Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf, said US bases and Israeli assets were legitimate targets because of hostile acts, including the “violation of agreements over Lebanon.”

Before Sunday, Iran had not attacked Israel since a ceasefire in the wider war started in April, although Hezbollah had done so.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that Washington and Tehran were close to an agreement on ending the war.

“We’re very close to a deal, or I’m going to blow the hell out of them,” Trump told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” in a recorded interview that aired on Sunday to mark 100 days of the conflict.

Trump wants no attacks in Lebanon

Israel has never halted its Lebanon campaign, which has killed thousands of people and driven hundreds of thousands more from their homes.

Hezbollah, which kept out of truce talks, has also continued its attacks and says it will not give up its weapons unless Israel halts its attacks and withdraws from Lebanon.

Netanyahu said Israel’s Sunday strikes on Beirut’s southern outskirts, a district known as Dahiyeh and a longtime Hezbollah stronghold, were ordered in response to Hezbollah firing toward Israel.

The wider war has been stalled since the US and Israel paused attacks on Iran in early April, with Tehran blocking most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the main transit route for a fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas.

Washington has imposed its own blockade of Iranian ports.

Though Washington and Tehran have said they are close to a preliminary deal to reopen the strait, they have repeatedly traded strikes, with escalations in recent days that included attacks on nearby Arab states hosting US bases.

Trump has said any agreement to end the war must prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, and he is under pressure to deliver terms tougher than those agreed in 2015 under then-President Barack Obama in a deal Trump later repudiated.

Tehran’s demands include the lifting of US and international sanctions, recognition of its sway over the strait and the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets. A source familiar with US plans told Reuters on Saturday that Washington could make Iranian assets available to Gulf neighbors to repair damage inflicted by Iran.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Sunday any such diversion of Iranian assets would be illegal, and Tehran would take measures in response.

Precautionary measures

Iraq and Syria closed their airspace as a safety precaution on Sunday after their eastern neighbour Iran launched missiles across their territory towards targets in Israel.

In a brief statement, the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority reported the closure of Iraqi airspace for 72 hours. Syria's authority closed the country's "southern air corridors" for 12 hours.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia will host the 39th Conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) by videoconference on June 10-11 under the patronage of King Salman.

The meeting, organized by the Saudi Shoura Council and the AIPU, will bring together speakers of Arab parliaments and legislative councils along with delegates from several regional organizations.

Shoura Council Speaker Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh said the royal patronage reflected Saudi Arabia’s support for joint Arab cooperation and efforts to reinforce regional security and stability.

He said Arab parliamentary coordination was essential for confronting shared challenges, unifying positions and promoting development and integration across the Arab world.

Al Al-Sheikh added that the conference was expected to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy and support coordination on Arab issues at regional and international levels.

Founded in Damascus in 1974 after the October War, the AIPU is a regional body that seeks to deepen cooperation among Arab parliaments, coordinate positions on regional and international issues, support Arab solidarity and national security, and promote dialogue, representative democracy and human rights.

The 38th Conference of the AIPU was hosted by Algeria on May 3, 2025.

Istanbul becomes global meeting point of Islamic economy

Uğur Aslanhan

07 June 2026

The Istanbul Finance Center hosted the 3rd Global Islamic Economy Summit, organized under the auspices of the Presidency and as part of the AlBaraka Summit Series, with Anadolu acting as the global communications partner.

AlBaraka Islamic Economics Forum Board of Trustees Chairman Abdullah Saleh Kamel emphasized the urgent duty to establish the proper framework for the role of capital in the Islamic economy.

Kamel stated that this framework helped achieve higher objectives by making capital a generator of wealth and pure charitable social capital.

"Allow me here to commend the countries whose systems work to enable waqf, such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Malaysia, and others, and to call upon other countries to follow the example of these countries," Kamel said.

He noted that the developmental role of waqf grew daily in these countries as an extension of a great civilization that extended across the world for many centuries.

Moral principles must form basis of economic development

Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, advisor at the Royal Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, member of the Council of Senior Scholars, and imam of Al-Masjid Al-Haram, drew attention to the human-oriented approach of the Islamic economy.

He said: "Speaking about wealth is not merely a discussion about the accumulation of riches, nor about maximizing abstract figures.

"Rather, it is a discussion about building the civilizational strength of the Ummah, fostering social stability, achieving economic sufficiency, and promoting guidance and sound stewardship that preserve human dignity, societal prosperity, and the security, strength, and independence of the state’s decision-making"

An Islamic bank should not be merely a financing institution; rather, it should be a partner in economic and social development, he added.

Trump tells Netanyahu not to retaliate, seeks to keep Iran peace talks on track

June 07, 2026

BEIRUT/DUBAI/NEW JERSEY: US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would tell Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to strike back after Iran fired a salvo of missiles at Israeli targets in retaliation for an attack on the outskirts of Beirut, news outlet Axios reported.

Iran has long said any peace deal with the US would depend on a ceasefire also holding in Lebanon, which Israel invaded in March in pursuit of Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters who fired rockets and drones across the border in solidarity with Tehran.

But Israel earlier on Sunday launched strikes in the Beirut area for the first time since the US announced a truce plan for Lebanon last week.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted Ramat David air base, near Nazareth. The Israeli military said it identified missiles launched from Iran and that its defense systems had intercepted them.

Trump, who was spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and Netanyahu spoke by phone for a little less than half an hour, an Israeli official said, without giving further details. The White House and the Israeli prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Earlier, Trump told Axios he would press Netanyahu not to retaliate.

“Israel had its strike and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one,” Trump said. “We are very close to a final deal with Iran. It is going to be a good deal. I don’t want it to blow up because of what is happening now.”

In a separate interview with the Financial Times published on Sunday, Trump said Netanyahu would ultimately have to accept whatever agreement Washington reached with Tehran.

“He won't have any choice,” Trump was quoted as saying, adding that he “calls the shots.” The remarks underscored Trump's determination to prevent a fresh escalation that could derail negotiations with Iran.

Israel would retaliate, said an Israeli source, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity following the Iranian attack.

Shortly after midnight local time, the Israeli military issued a brief statement, citing Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir as saying his forces had not been directed to attack Iran so far, but would do so “with determination” once given the order.

Since the start of US-Iran talks aimed at halting the war, Israel has continued attacks in Lebanon in a conflict with Hezbollah that Israeli officials insist should be treated separately from any ceasefire with Iran. Tehran demands that a peace deal with the United States include Lebanon, warning that Israeli attacks there were jeopardizing talks.

Iran’s chief peace negotiator, parliamentary speaker Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf, said US bases and Israeli assets are legitimate targets because of hostile acts, including the “violation of agreements over Lebanon.”

Before Sunday, Iran had not targeted Israel since a ceasefire in the wider war started in April, although Hezbollah has done so.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that Washington and Tehran were close to an agreement on ending the war.

“We’re very close to a deal, or I’m going to blow the hell out of them,” Trump told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” in a prerecorded interview that aired on Sunday to mark 100 days of the conflict.

Trump wants no attacks in Lebanon

Trump has leaned heavily on Israel to curb military action in Lebanon and avoid steps that could jeopardize negotiations with Iran. In the Financial Times interview, he signaled confidence that Netanyahu would ultimately fall in line behind any agreement reached with Tehran, saying the Israeli leader would have “no choice” but to accept the outcome because Washington was directing the diplomatic effort.

Trump has also sought to stop Israeli attacks in Lebanon to create space for a broader settlement. He reportedly rebuked Netanyahu in a phone call last week and urged restraint. After that call, Netanyahu appeared to abandon plans to strike Beirut.

But Israel has never fully halted its Lebanon campaign, which has killed thousands of people and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes. Hezbollah, which did not take part in the truce talks, has also continued its attacks and says it will not give up its weapons unless Israel halts its attacks and withdraws from Lebanon.

Netanyahu said the Israeli strikes on Sunday on Beirut’s southern outskirts, a district known as Dahiyeh that has long been a Hezbollah stronghold, were ordered in response to Hezbollah firing toward Israel.

The wider war has been stalemated since the US and Israel paused their attacks on Iran in early April, with Tehran blocking most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the main transit route for Middle East oil. Washington has imposed its own blockade of Iranian ports.

Though Washington and Tehran have said they are close to a preliminary agreement that would reopen the strait, they have repeatedly traded strikes, with escalations in recent days that have included attacks on nearby Arab states hosting US bases.

Netanyahu was criticized last week by political rivals over a new ceasefire in Lebanon ahead of this year’s national election.

Hundreds of captives freed from Boko Haram mountain hideout

07 June 2026

At least 360 people kidnapped by Boko Haram jihadists from a mainly Muslim community in Nigeria's north-eastern Borno state in March have been freed from a remote mountain hideout.

The circumstances of how they were freed are disputed. The army says it had launched an unprecedented intelligence-led operation that had been weeks in the planning and taken the Islamist militants by surprise.

But a local group, the Borno South Youth Initiative, says it mediated the unconditional release, putting the number of those freed at 416.

Mass abductions by groups for ransom have become a common tactic in Nigeria. Boko Haram gained notoriety in 2014 for kidnapping more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok.

That spawned a range of groups that use kidnapping to raise funds, focusing on soft targets such as schools, churches, mosques and remote villages.

It is illegal to pay ransoms in Nigeria, but analysts say payments by desperate families, intermediaries or, in some cases, state authorities have fuelled the abductions.

Military spokesperson Lt-Col Haruna M Sani described the assault on Boko Haram's Mandara mountain hideout, "under cover of darkness", as one of the military's "most significant hostage rescue operations" in the north-east.

"Faced with the speed, precision, and overwhelming combat power of the advancing troops, several insurgents abandoned their positions and fled into surrounding mountainous terrain, while others surrendered," he said in a statement.

The authorities say the hostages are receiving medical care.

"Sadly, two infants died due to exhaustion from prolonged captivity and harsh terrain," Daniel Bwala, a special adviser to President Bola Tinubu, posted on X.

He said the government, which has been coming under fierce criticism for the widespread insecurity across Nigeria, commended the troops.

The captives are from around Ngoshe, a mainly Muslim community near the border with Cameroon.

In early March, the area came under attack from Boko Haram fighters reportedly as people were breaking their Ramadan fast.

Samaila Kaigama, president of the Borno South Youth Alliance (Bosaya), told journalists that his group had been advocating for their release and had been in contact with the militants.

In a video posted on Facebook he hit out at "government boys" who he said were "claiming glory for our efforts".

On Sunday morning, the military released videos and photos of the freed captives as they sat under trees overnight.

Several news outlets also had a video of a local government official telling them that the authorities were doing their utmost to secure the area so that they could go home to their farms.

He also explained that it was thought some of those captured were believed to have escaped into Cameroon and efforts were being made for their safe return.

Boko Haram began its military campaign to impose Islamic rule in northern Nigeria in 2009. It no longer controls the huge swathes of territory it once did, but it, and other splinter groups, remains active and dangerous.

Earlier this year, a small contingent of US soldiers deployed to Nigeria to train the West African nation's armed forces and help them with intelligence in their battle against growing security threats.

These are complex, overlapping and include the Islamist insurgency, kidnapping gangs, clashes over land and separatist unrest.

Last month, Nigeria and the US said they had killed a senior Islamic State (IS) leader in a joint-operation.

Freedom of expression requires moral responsibility, says Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

8 Jun 2026

Anwar Ibrahim stresses that freedom of expression must be guided by moral responsibility, warning against divisive discourse

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that freedom of expression must be guided by moral responsibility, warning that differences of opinion should never be used to divide society or undermine shared human values.

He said that in an era demanding more effective and responsible communication, public discourse must be rooted in wisdom, knowledge and civility.

“A society lacking knowledge, detached from truth, indifferent to justice and devoid of compassion in its judgement and actions will easily descend into a state of ignorance born of negligence, prejudice and misunderstanding,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Anwar said this was among the key messages he delivered during the Communications Ministry’s monthly assembly earlier, which was also attended by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

The Prime Minister said a nation’s progress should not be measured solely by material prosperity and physical development, but also by the depth of its knowledge, the strength of its intellect and character, and the values that guide its people.

“In pursuing the national development agenda, we are not only tasked with advancing economic growth and technological progress, but also with nurturing a knowledgeable and ethical society, one that values learning and remains united on the foundations of truth, justice and compassion,” he said.

'Hindu-Muslim agenda can't provide jobs': ‘Cockroach’ chief Abhijeet Dipke lists 5 takeaways day after Delhi protest

Jun 08, 2026

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Sunday alleged that Indian politics over the past decade has been centred on the Hindu-Muslim agenda, arguing that such issues do little to address pressing concerns like unemployment.

Addressing a press conference in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar a day after leading a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, Dipke reiterated his demand for Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation over the alleged NEET paper leak and CBSE OSM glitches.

He also maintained that the CJP movement is apolitical and will not align itself with any party.

1. 'Hindu-Muslim agenda can't provide jobs'

The CJP founder said the country's political discourse needs to shift towards issues that directly affect young people, particularly employment and education.

"We are seeing that the country's politics has moved to the Hindu-Muslim agenda in the past 10-12 years. This issue can't provide jobs. We need to shift that focus, and the government's priorities should also change," he said, reported news agency PTI.

While stressing that the agitation would continue beyond the demand for Pradhan's resignation, Dipke said employment remains a major concern for the country's youth.

"After Dharmendra Pradhan resigns, we will prepare an agenda for bringing changes in the education system. This will not end here because employment is also a key issue in the country," he added.

2. Renews demand for Pradhan's resignation

Defending the demand for the education minister's resignation, Dipke said accountability was missing in the wake of repeated examination-related controversies.

Referring to the alleged NEET paper leak, he questioned, “How can the system work efficiently if no one is taking the responsibility? If any company is facing losses because of someone, will that loss turn into profit till that person resigns?”

According the news agency, he went on to say, "A person is fired from a company after a couple of mistakes, but here, the papers of exams organised by the government are frequently getting leaked," he said, before asking, "'How can we believe that you (government) are ready to accept mistakes till the resignation is finalised?'"

3. Hits back at criticism of protesters

Dipke also took aim at remarks allegedly made about those who participated in Saturday's protest at Jantar Mantar.

Pointing to the turnout at the demonstration, he said, “A huge crowd at Jantar Mantar and photographs speak about the people. How many people will they label as Pakistanis? Will they call the agitating students, the Opposition and media asking questions as Pakistanis?”

The Boston-educated further asked, "Are the 'IT cell' people (of the ruling parties) only Indians?"

4. 'CJP movement cannot be compared to neighbouring countries'

The CJP founder rejected comparisons between his movement and youth-led protests and regime-changes seen in some neighbouring countries such as Nepal and Bangladesh.

"Because, here (in India) there is a system. Those who compare our movement with the ones that occurred in neighbouring countries should know that the Jantar Mantar was very peaceful. Youth who attended the agitation came from all corners of the country," PTI quoted CJP founder as saying.

He added that future agitations would be organised on a larger scale while continuing to remain peaceful.

5. 'No association with any political party'

Even as political leaders and organisations have expressed support for the agitation, Dipke insisted that CJP would remain independent.

"We have not spoken to leaders of any political party. This movement is for Gen Z. Those who want to support us can support us externally, but we will not associate ourselves with any political party," he said.

Jaipur anti-encrochment drive: Mosque demolished to widen road; 2 temples, mazaar to be taken down

Jun 8, 2026

NEW DELHI: With mobile internet services suspended, additional police forces deployed and social media placed under round-the-clock surveillance, the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) on Monday launched a major anti-encroachment drive in Jagatpura to clear structures and encroachments standing within the right-of-way of a proposed road expansion project.

The demolition drive is aimed at clearing encroachments along a key road corridor near the Nandpuri Underpass to facilitate a long-pending road widening project.

Officials said a mosque, two temples, a satsang hall and a mazar that fall within the designated right-of-way are among the structures were marked for removal. Additional police personnel have been deployed and surveillance intensified as the administration seeks to ensure the exercise proceeds peacefully.

24-HOUR BAN

Internet suspended across parts of Jaipur

The Jaipur district administration ordered a temporary shutdown of mobile internet services across Jaipur North and Jaipur East police districts from Sunday midnight to Monday midnight ahead of the anti-encroachment drive.

The order, issued by Jaipur Divisional Commissioner V Saravana Kumar, suspends 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mobile internet services, along with bulk SMS, MMS and social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook and X. Voice calling services remain unaffected.

The restrictions apply across all police station areas under Jaipur North and Jaipur East districts, except the Rajasthan International Centre in Jhalana and adjoining localities.

Officials said the decision was taken as a preventive measure amid apprehensions that social media and internet-based platforms could be used to spread rumours and disturb public peace.

The demolition drive is part of a broader effort to widen the road running parallel to the railway line from the Nandpuri Underpass in Jagatpura to its sanctioned width of 80 feet.

JDA officials said five religious structures fall within the road's right-of-way and are therefore slated for removal. These include a mosque, two temples, a satsang bhavan and a mazar.

Authorities said the road remains significantly narrower than its recorded width at several points, making the widening project necessary to improve connectivity and bring the corridor in line with approved planning norms.

Police step up monitoring

Authorities said online platforms would remain under close watch throughout the operation.

“Special surveillance will be maintained on social media and other digital platforms during the operation. The police’s cyber unit and law-and-order teams will conduct continuous monitoring,” Jaipur Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal said.

He warned of strict action against anyone spreading “religious frenzy, hatred or misinformation” online, saying anti-social elements may attempt to disturb communal harmony through provocative videos, posts or misleading content.

Mittal said individuals attempting to inflame religious sentiments or circulate false information would face legal consequences. He added that cyber and law-and-order units had been directed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance and respond swiftly to rumours or misinformation.

Curbs imposed on public gatherings

Police have prohibited rallies, processions, demonstrations, public meetings and mass gatherings across the Jaipur Police Commissionerate area without prior permission. The restrictions, however, do not apply to wedding processions or funeral gatherings.

The administration has also barred the assembly of five or more people at public places without permission and urged residents to cooperate in maintaining peace. Officials warned that action would be taken against those violating the orders.

"In today's operation, there are about 10 to 12 illegal structures that are being removed because they encroach upon the sector road. The situation is completely peaceful, and there is no opposition so far. Internet services have been suspended as a precautionary measure. The public is cooperating in maintaining peace," said ASP Dhayal.

Officials said the operation has so far remained peaceful, with residents cooperating with the administration.

Earlier notices issued before action

According to Anand Sharma, Deputy Inspector General of the JDA Vigilance Wing, 134 encroachments along the same route were removed during a drive conducted on May 22.

He said the managements and individuals associated with the religious structures located within the road boundary had been given time to remove the constructions voluntarily. Following the expiry of the stipulated period, the administration initiated direct action to clear the remaining encroachments.

Officials maintained that the current exercise is part of an ongoing effort to reclaim public land and implement the city's planned infrastructure expansion.

Sambhal admin refutes Samajwadi Party leaders’ charge on mosque demolition

Shruti Gupta

Jun 8, 2026

With the Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) hitting out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the demolition of a mosque at a village in Sambhal district, the district administration on Sunday said that the Mustafa Qadri Mosque was built on encroached land.

Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq, in a post on X, alleged that the mosque was demolished despite “countless efforts, appeals, and legal attempts” by local residents. He accused the administration of targeting the religious place without giving the affected parties an adequate opportunity to be heard.

SP MLA from Asmoli constituency in Sambhal, Pinky Yadav, said the demolition was carried out “without any consultation”. She claimed that although she tried to communicate with the district authorities several times, she didn’t get any response.

“There could be other methods to tackle the problem apart from demolishing the structure. Will the same procedure be followed in other encroachments of the government property?” Yadav asked.

Refuting the SP leaders’ charges, Sambhal District Magistrate Ankit Khandelwal said an appeal against the eviction order was filed before his court, and the parties were given an opportunity to present evidence. “However, no evidence supporting their claim over the land was submitted. Following this, the demolition was carried out,” he added.

Sambhal Tehsildar Dhirendra Kumar Singh said a report submitted by the area lekhpal on February 4, 2026, revealed that around 0.012 hectares of the land at Kaserua village, recorded as a graveyard in revenue records, had been encroached upon, and a mosque structure was constructed on it. The report identified Zakir Hussain, the mosque’s mutawalli (caretaker), as the alleged encroacher.

Singh said the notices were sent to Hussain, and the hearing was held as per the procedure. “During the proceedings, Zakir Hussain did not file any formal objection. The Tehsildar’s court passed an eviction order on April 21, 2026, and imposed a penalty of Rs 1.12 lakh,” Singh added.

Rethinking waqf of undivided property in India

Jun 8, 2026

The law relating to waqf in India has increasingly become a subject of intense legal, political and social debate. Yet one important doctrinal issue continues to receive far less attention than it deserves: the concept of Waqf of Mushaʿ — the dedication of an undivided share in jointly owned property.

Under classical Islamic jurisprudence, Muslim jurists differed significantly on whether an undivided share in a divisible property could validly be dedicated as waqf without prior partition. The issue may appear technical at first glance, but in modern India it carries enormous practical consequences for property rights, litigation, administration and social harmony.

The early Hanafi jurists, whose opinions historically shaped much of South Asian Muslim law, generally disapproved the creation of waqf over undivided shares in divisible property unless the property had first been partitioned. Their concern was rooted in a simple but important question: how can possession and management of a waqf be meaningfully separated when the property itself remains physically undivided and jointly possessed with others?

Later Hanafi jurists, along with the majority of other Sunni schools, adopted a more permissive approach. Over time, this broader doctrine became influential in British era Muhammadan law and modern Indian legal practice. Given the prevailing circumstances at that time the rationale was understandable as in many Muslim societies, ancestral properties, agricultural lands and orchards remained jointly held for generations, as partition of property in the family was considered a social stigma. Insisting upon partition before every charitable dedication would have invalidated countless waqfs.

However, the realities of 21st century India compel a serious re-examination of whether the earlier Hanafi caution may have contained deeper practical wisdom.

Today, the legal consequences of waqf designation extend far beyond purely theological questions. Once even an undivided fractional share in property acquires waqf character, the effects often impact all co-sharers, including those whose own shares are entirely private and non-waqf.

Partition proceedings become more complicated. Questions arise regarding jurisdiction between Civil Courts, Revenue Authorities and Waqf Tribunals. Sale and development of jointly held property may become commercially difficult. Potential purchasers and financial institutions frequently hesitate to engage with properties carrying unresolved waqf implications. Litigation may continue for generations, even where the actual waqf share is comparatively small.

The early Hanafi jurists feared precisely this kind of intermixture of rights. Their objection was not hostility toward waqf itself. On the contrary, the Hanafi school historically developed one of the most sophisticated doctrines of charitable endowment in the Islamic legal tradition. Their concern was the preservation of certainty, stability and fairness in property relations.

A waqf, once created, acquires a perpetual character. If permanently intermingled with divisible private property without clear demarcation, it can create enduring difficulties not only for administrators of the waqf but also for unrelated co-sharers.

Modern Indian waqf law operates through an extensive statutory framework involving surveys, registration mechanisms, tribunals and regulatory oversight. The consequences of waqf designation today are therefore far more far-reaching than what medieval jurists could have anticipated. In this context, the early Hanafi preference for prior partition and separate possession deserves renewed scholarly and judicial consideration.

At the very least, Indian courts should insist upon strict identification of the exact waqf share, clear proof of title and early partition wherever feasible. No presumption should arise that the entire jointly held property acquires waqf character merely because one undivided share has been dedicated.

At the same time, Muslim religious scholars and intellectual institutions must also engage seriously with this question. Islamic jurisprudence has never been static. The tradition has always recognized changing circumstances, public welfare and prevention of harm as legitimate considerations in legal interpretation. Revisiting the earlier Hanafi position in light of contemporary Indian realities would therefore not amount to abandoning Islamic law. Rather, it would reflect the tradition’s own long-standing concern for justice, clarity and social stability.

The debate over waqf in India is often conducted in highly polarized terms. Yet meaningful reform cannot emerge from polarization alone. It requires careful engagement with both classical jurisprudence and modern legal realities.

Centuries ago, the early Hanafi jurists warned against the dangers of permanently intermixing charitable and private interests in divisible property without clear separation. Modern India may now have reached a stage where their caution deserves to be heard once again.

Cabinet row: Cong faces heat over lack of Muslim representation

Jun 8, 2026

Hubballi: A demand for at least five Muslim ministers in the Karnataka cabinet has emerged as a fresh political challenge for Congress, with protests intensifying across the state and putting the party high command under visible pressure.

Community leaders argue Muslims voted overwhelmingly for the Congress in the last assembly elections, claiming nearly 87% of the community supported the party.

They now insist this level of backing must be reflected in representation at the highest level of govt, particularly in the allocation of cabinet berths.

This is not the first time the issue has surfaced.

After the Davangere bypoll, ties between sections of the Muslim community and the Congress leadership have remained strained.

During the bypoll, community members urged the party to field a Muslim candidate, presenting it as a question of recognition and political inclusion. However, the high command chose to allocate the ticket to a member of late Shamanur Shivashankarappa's family, triggering resentment and it became a reference point for later protests.

Since then, the community has repeatedly attempted to influence party decisions, often linking their demands to safeguarding the interests and standing of Muslim MLAs within the Congress.

On several occasions, when Congress initiated action against Muslim leaders for alleged anti-party activities, community groups responded with protests and press conferences, framing disciplinary moves as unfair targeting and warning the leadership against sidelining Muslim voices.

The latest round of protests began Friday, with demonstrators demanding five ministerial berths in the new cabinet, including one for BZ Zameer Ahmed. The agitation signals the community is no longer content with assurances and is seeking concrete representation.

For Congress, already managing competing expectations among multiple caste and regional blocs, the renewed push adds urgency and complexity to cabinet formation and power-sharing decisions.

Former minister AM Hindasgeri, also president of the century-old Hubballi Anjuman E Islam, said that during SM Krishna's tenure as CM, five-six Muslims used to get ministerial berths, and he was also a minister then.

"If one goes by population, Muslims should get greater preference, but currently at least five MLAs should be given ministerial berths," he added.

Altaf Hallur, president of Hubballi-Dharwad Mahanagara Congress, said the sentiments and demands of the Muslim community will be brought to the notice of the party president and senior state leaders.

In Dakshina Kannada, responding to reports of discontent over portfolio allocations and the absence of a cabinet berth for Khan, minister UT Khader said Congress values all its leaders and that decisions on cabinet expansion rest with the party high command.

Gauhati High Court quashes bigamy case, notes Muslim personal law permits up to four marriages

Somya Panwar

Jun 8, 2026

Holding that Muslim personal law permits up to four wives, the Gauhati High Court has held that a Muslim man’s second marriage is not illegal and that prosecution for bigamy can arise only if he contracts a fifth marriage while the other four subsisting.

Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita allowed a Muslim man’s plea to quash a criminal case filed by his wife, who alleged that he had married another woman during subsistence of their marriage and was therefore liable for the offence of bigamy.

“Hence, he can be prosecuted under Section 82 of the BNS, 2023 only if he marries a fifth wife, during the life time of earlier four wives, without divorcing any of them, as such a marriage would be a void marriage. For the same reasons, the provisions of Section 83 of BNS, 2023 will also be not applicable as his second marriage is not an illegal marriage under the personal law applicable to a Muslim male,” the June 5 order noted.

Justice Mridul Kumar Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita allows a Muslim man’s plea to quash case against him for bigamy.

Second marriage

A wife had lodged an FIR before the office-in-charge of Gauripur Police Station on August 4, 2025, alleging that her husband used to torture her after her marriage.

She also alleged that her husband married during subsistence of their marriage and married another woman on August 4, 2025.

Investigation was conducted; after the completion of the investigation, a charge-sheet was laid against the husband under Section 82(2)/83 (address offences related to fraudulent and illegal marriages) of BNS, 2023.

Consequently, a case was registered before the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dhubri.

‘Law permits four wives’

Senior counsel H R A Choudhury, on behalf of the husband, argued that Section 82 (criminal offence of bigamy) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 is only applicable when it takes place while the spouse is still alive.

He contended that the Muslim personal law permits a Muslim man up to four wives, and does not attract Section 82 of the BNS after the second marriage.

Therefore, he submitted that the continuation of the present proceeding would amount to abuse of law, and prayed that it should be quashed.

On the other hand, B Sarma, counsel representing the wife, argued that her husband used to torture her after the marriage and already there had been a complaint registered against him under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code by the wife.

It was argued that even if the personal allows a muslim man to marry another woman despite having a wife, it’s the moral obligation of the husband to intimate his second wife about the existence of his first marriage and on its failure, he may be regarded as having committed offence under Section 82(2) (gives up to 10 years in jail if someone hides their first marriage before remarrying)  of BNS.

Additional Public Prosecutor K Baishya submitted that under the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Act, 2024, it was mandatory to get the Muslim marriages registered.

It was contended that there was nothing on record to show that the petitioner’s second marriage was registered under the aforementioned Act, but it was also fairly conceded that mere non-registration of such marriage would not make the second marriage void in itself.

‘Not bigamy’

The Gauhati High Court observed that for an offence to fall under the ambit of Section 82(!) of the BNS, the second marriage must be void being contracted while the existence of the first marriage.

It was noted that an offence under Section 82(2) could only arise if all the exquisite condition unde Section 82(1) were satisfied, and Section 83 applies when a muslim man knowingly performs the ceremony of an illegal marriage, making it inapplicable as the husband’s second marriage is not an illegal marriage.

Underlining the observation from the Bombay High Court and Kerala High Court, the court noted that Section 82 of BNS is the same as Section 494 IPC, according to which a void second marriage was an essential element for attracting the offence of bigamy.

The court further said that under personal law, a muslim man was permitted to have up to four wives simultaneously, and his second marriage could not be treated as void merely because his first marriage existed; therefore, the husband could not be prosecuted under Section 82 BNS for marrying a second woman.

Subsequently, the court observed that Section 82 could only apply to a Muslim man if he contracts a fifth marriage while the other four are still subsisting, as such a marriage would be void under personal law, and allowed the plea.

Pulao irony lost on anti-biryani brigade in Haridwar amid food name crackdown

Piyush Srivastava

08.06.26

Sadhus in Haridwar have embarked on a mission to ensure that shopkeepers selling veg-biryani call it veg-pulao, hoping to untether the popular dish from its Muslim roots but not knowing that pulao itself has a Persian etymology.

The sale of non-veg food was prohibited within a 5km radius of Har Ki Pauri, the sacred ghat along the Ganga, in 1916, following objections raised by Hindu religious leaders.

Giving in to the demands of sadhus, the local municipal authorities banned the sale and online delivery of non-veg food across Haridwar in February this year.

Taking it a notch higher, local sadhus accompanied by cops are now conducting raids on shops with banners having “veg-biryani” written on them.

“While the preparation is the same, we have changed the name on the banners from veg-biryani to veg-pulao,” a youth selling rice fried with soya chunks on a cart in the temple town told reporters on Sunday.

“The sadhus came here along with some policemen on Saturday and asked us to stop selling veg-biryani. They said they oppose it because it sounds like a Muslim name. They told us they have no problem with the word veg-pulao,” the shopkeeper said on the condition of anonymity.

Pandit Adheer Kaushik, head of Akhand Parashuram Akhara, said the shopkeepers had happily agreed to their demand. “We are not against anybody, but we want the religious identity of the place to remain intact,” he said.

“We were receiving complaints from some devotees that food sellers had put up posters of veg-biryani in their shops. As we are preparing for the Mahakumbh in 2027, we need to take these corrective steps,” he added.

Kartik Giri, another sadhu, said: “Biryani is not our terminology; pulao is ours. We removed banners and posters with ‘veg-biryani’ written on them within a radius of 6km of Har Ki Pauri. The shopkeepers supported us.”

The word biryani is derived from Persian words “birian”, which means “fried before cooking”, and “birinj”, which means rice. In Indian kitchens, biryani evolved based

on the style of cooking and the ingredients used. Meat, chicken, potato, soya chunks, eggs or curd were added to the dish to make it more flavourful.

Experts said it was originally called pulao, a word that also has a Persian lineage.

“Pulao was first mentioned in Persian literature in the 10th century. The Shias from Iran, who migrated to India in the 13th and 14th centuries, brought it with them. Biryani is the process of preparing the dish, but it is actually called pulao. Its character gradually changed because India has a variety of spices that were used to prepare dishes,” said Abu Bakr, a restaurateur in Lucknow.

Israel army vows to operate across Lebanon, intensify actions against Hezbollah

June 07, 2026

JERUSALEM: The Israeli military vowed on Sunday to press ahead with its military campaign in Lebanon and said it would step up operations against Hezbollah.

“The (Iranian) regime is attempting to establish a new equation through direct attacks on Israeli territory in response to IDF operations in Dahiyeh,” military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said, in a televised statement.

“We struck in Dahiyeh in response to Hezbollah’s relentless attacks on the communities of northern Israel. The IDF will continue to operate throughout Lebanon and will intensify its actions against the Hezbollah terrorist organization.”

Hezbollah said it had launched a drone at an army post in northern Israel on Sunday, confirming an attack hours after Israel said it had struck Beirut in retaliation for cross-border fire.

In a statement, the group said that “in response to the Israeli enemy’s violation of the ceasefire and the attacks that struck villages in southern Lebanon … the fighters of the Islamic Resistance targeted, at 9:30 AM on Sunday, June 7, 2026, a gathering of Israeli enemy soldiers at Dovev Barracks”.

An Israeli air raid on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Sunday killed two people and wounded 20 more, Lebanon’s health ministry said.

“The Israeli enemy’s airstrike on the Mreijeh area in the southern suburbs of Beirut resulted in two martyrs and 20 wounded, including 4 children and 4 women,” the ministry said, in a statement.

The accident occurred after the driver lost control of the bus on a highway near Nassiriya, causing the vehicle to overturn and burst into flames, the officials said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi ordered an investigation into the causes of the crash and directed authorities to submit a report on the circumstances surrounding the accident, his office said.

Police and medical officials said 21 people were confirmed dead at the scene and in hospital, while 19 others were wounded.

Most of the injured were in critical condition and suffering from severe burns, health officials said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, police said.

Road accidents are common in Iraq, where speeding, poor road conditions and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations contribute to a high number of fatalities each year.

Israel kills nine in Gaza as Egypt hosts new ceasefire talks

June 07, 2026

CAIRO: Israeli strikes on a Hamas-run police station and a vehicle in the Gaza Strip killed at least nine people and wounded 20 others, health officials said, as mediators began new efforts to salvage a fragile US-brokered ceasefire deal.

One strike hit a police post adjacent to a large tent encampment of displaced families in Khan Younis in the south of the enclave, killing five people and wounding 16 others, medics said. They did not say how many of the casualties were police.

The Israeli military said it hit a Hamas command center.

Hamas security officials have said dozens of police personnel in Gaza were killed in recent months as Israel stepped up attacks against police headquarters and personnel.

Later on Sunday, another Israeli airstrike killed four people and wounded four others when it hit a vehicle driving through the middle of Gaza City, medics said.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on that incident.

Major fighting has been paused since October under a ceasefire after two years of war, but no agreement has been reached to implement a further US-backed plan for Israeli troops to withdraw, Hamas to disarm and Gaza to be rebuilt.

Israeli troops still control more than half of Gaza’s territory, where they have ordered residents out and destroyed remaining buildings. Nearly the entire population of 2 million now lives in a tiny strip of land along the coast, mainly in makeshift tents or damaged buildings, under Hamas control.

Hamas’ nearly 10,000 police officers have emerged as a sticking point in talks to advance US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza. Hamas wants them included in a new police force, while Israel rejects a role for any Hamas-affiliated personnel.

Egypt began hosting a new round of truce talks with leaders from Hamas and other Palestinian factions, sources from Hamas and other sources close to the negotiations said. The talks are expected to last for a few days.

Israel and Hamas have repeatedly accused each other of violating the truce. Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed more than 950 Palestinians since the start of the truce, while Palestinian militant attacks have killed four Israeli soldiers.

Last year’s deal established a Board of Peace led by Trump to oversee a phased ceasefire and was ratified by the United Nations Security Council.

However, discussions on many of the toughest areas of dispute, including the disarmament of Hamas, Israeli withdrawal and make-up of a Gaza government, were postponed to later in the process. The Board of Peace negotiators have been talking to both sides on the disarmament issue.

Hamas told envoys from the Board and mediators Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye that ending Israeli attacks in Gaza was essential for any progress, sources from the group and officials close to the talks said.

Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesperson in Gaza, said on Sunday the group was open to ideas that would lead to ending Israeli attacks in Gaza and reaching common ground over issues of the second phase of the Trump plan. But he said the Board of Peace should stop being “biased” toward Israel.

Nearly 73,000 people in Gaza have been killed since the war started, most of them civilians, according to Gaza health authorities.

Israel launched its assault after Hamas-led militants broke across the border, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 Israeli and foreign hostages on October 7, 2023.

Syrian authorities arrest former assistant sergeant in Assad regime

June 07, 2026

LONDON: The Interior Ministry of the Syrian Arab Republic on Sunday announced the arrest of a former officer of the Assad regime suspected of committing crimes against the Syrian people.

Ghassan Assaf formerly held the rank of assistant sergeant and served as the office manager to Suheil Al-Hassan, a prominent figure who commanded the Assad-era special forces.

Authorities accuse Assaf of committing violations against civilians in the western Aleppo countryside during the civil war from 2011 to 2024. He is also accused of recruiting terrorist cells, inciting unrest and taking part in attacks targeting public security after 2024, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

Al-Hassan formed an anti-government armed group, Rijal Al-Nour, Saraya Al-Jawad, in August last year. It consisted of former military figures from the Assad regime. Authorities accuse Al-Hassan’s group and others from the coastal towns of Latakia, Jabla and Tartus of committing acts of violence against security personnel.

Security agencies have arrested dozens of officials from the Assad era for human rights violations against the Syrian people since December 2024. Some are already being put on trial.

Israel military opens probe into West Bank baby’s killing

June 07, 2026

JERUSALEM: The Israeli military has opened an investigation into the killing of a seven-month-old infant by Israeli gunfire in the occupied West Bank, it said Sunday.

Sam Fahd Abou Haikal died and his parents sustained light injuries when Israeli forces opened fire on the family’s car in the city of Hebron, according to Palestinian sources.

Shortly after Friday’s incident, the military said its forces had fired after “soldiers perceived a vehicle accelerating toward them.”

However, an initial inquiry found the three Palestinians were “uninvolved civilians.”

On Sunday, the military said it was opening an investigation into the incident.

“Based on the findings of the preliminary examination, it was decided to open an investigation by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division,” the military said in a statement.

“Upon its conclusion, the findings will be transferred to the Military Advocate General’s Office.”

Since the war in Gaza broke out in October 2023 with Hamas’s attack on Israel, near-daily violence has also rocked the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.

Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 1,080 Palestinians since then, including both militants and civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry data.

Official Israeli figures show that at least 46 Israelis, both civilians and soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the same period.

NAIROBI: Saudi Arabia’s chief statistician used a major international data summit in Kenya to promote preparations for the 2026 United Nations World Data Forum in Riyadh and highlight the Kingdom’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence, geospatial information and statistical systems to support sustainable development.

The participation of General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) President Fahad Al-Dossari at the June 2-5 Global Data Festival in Nairobi was reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Al-Dossari led the Saudi delegation to the gathering, which brought together government officials, statisticians, technology experts and development partners from around the world to discuss the growing role of data and emerging technologies in addressing global challenges.

Speaking at the festival’s closing ceremony, Al-Dossari said Saudi Arabia remains committed to strengthening data and statistical systems, supporting innovation and expanding international cooperation through the use of advanced technologies.

He said integrating official statistics, geospatial information and artificial intelligence would be critical to tackling development challenges and improving decision-making.

On the sidelines of the event, Al-Dossari held meetings with international organizations and national statistical agencies to discuss preparations for the UN World Data Forum 2026 in Riyadh. Talks also focused on the “Road to Riyadh” initiative and efforts to align outcomes from the Nairobi festival with preparations for the global forum.

Al-Dossari also met Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD) Chief Executive Jenna Slotin to review arrangements for the Riyadh forum and explore future areas of cooperation.

The Nairobi event marked the first time the Global Data Festival has been held in Africa, underscoring Kenya’s growing reputation as a regional technology and innovation hub.

Organizers said more than 1,500 delegates attended the summit, which was held alongside the Kenya Space Expo and Conference and focused on the use of data, artificial intelligence and space technologies to address climate change, food security and economic growth.

Kenya’s Economic Planning Department said delegates from about 90 countries participated under the theme “Powering Resilience, Innovation, and Partnership through Data and Technology.”

The festival was opened by Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who called for stronger partnerships to unlock the potential of artificial intelligence and Earth Observation technologies in agriculture, climate resilience and economic development.

Kenyan officials also used the event to showcase efforts by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to modernize data collection and analysis through satellite imagery, real-time analytics and other digital tools.

GASTAT said its participation reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence in specialized international forums and reinforce its role in advancing data and statistical systems at both regional and global levels.

The UN World Data Forum 2026 is scheduled to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia lifts warning after early morning alert for Al-Kharj

June 08, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia issued a warning for Al-Kharj governorate early Monday, as state media reported sirens.

The Saudi Civil Defense, at 5:28AM, said: “A warning has been issued by the National Early Warning Platform in Al-Kharj Governorate to warn of a danger,” and urged the general public to follow official instructions, including taking shelter in a safe place.

The warning was lifted minutes later.

The notice came after a dramatic escalation on Sunday between Iran and Israel, with both launching missiles at each other and risking a fragile ceasefire which has allowed negotiations to take place to find a lasting solution in the Middle East war.

Iran launched missiles at Israel after Tehran had threatened to do so when the Israeli military struck the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Israel struck back by hitting a number of Iranian cities early on Monday, including the capital Tehran.

Saudi Arabia spent most of March shooting down Iranian drones and missiles in near-daily attacks after the US and israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28.

The Kingdom and other Gulf Arab nations condemned the March attacks across the Middle East as “reckless and destabilizing”.

Riyadh commission begins work on major Taif Road upgrade project

June 07, 2026

RIYADH: Work has begun on a major road development project in Riyadh aimed at improving traffic flow and strengthening connections between key areas of the capital.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced on Sunday the start of construction on two new bridges as part of the Taif Road Development Project, which will upgrade the road's intersections with Najd Road and Asir Road.

The project is expected to enhance connectivity between Qiddiya in western Riyadh and the capital's Ring Road and Jeddah Road to the east, while reducing travel times along one of the city's busiest transport corridors.

According to the commission, the 15-kilometer project includes the construction of the bridges and upgrades to the main road network.

Once completed, the corridor's capacity is expected to reach around 200,000 vehicles per day.

The redevelopment of the Najd and Asir intersections will include an integrated system of bridges and traffic lanes designed to improve traffic movement, reduce congestion and increase transport efficiency.

The commission said digital platforms and navigation applications will be updated regularly to provide motorists with information on construction progress and traffic diversions.

The Taif Road project forms part of Riyadh's wider road development program, which includes the construction and upgrading of more than 500 kilometers of roads across the capital.

The initiative aims to improve existing transport corridors, create new routes and strengthen links between key parts of the city as Saudi Arabia continues efforts to develop an integrated and sustainable urban transport network in line with its Vision 2030 goals.

Birmingham mosque fighting child poverty one food parcel at a time

07 Jun 2026

A Birmingham mosque is helping to tackle child food insecurity one food parcel at a time - providing an incredible helping hand to the community.

Masjid Al-Falaah in Handsworth regularly supplies up to 30 food parcels to nine schools in the local area on a weekly basis in a bid to feed our city's children.

Speaking to BirminghamLive about the efforts of the mosque, Adil Parkar, general secretary of Masjid Al-Falaah, said: "What you realise is that within our local community here, there are people who don't reach out to us sometimes because they think we know them because they come to the mosque.

"They don't want to be seen as those asking [for help]. So what they do is reach out to the schools."

Adil shared how often the food parcel delivered by the mosque may be the only meal a child has in a day - in a heartbreaking reflection of the reality of child poverty.

"The school children are there and sometimes that's the only meal they have in the day, but then the parents go to the school food bank asking for food - and then the school comes to us," he said.

He went on: "Well at least that way they are getting some food from our side, even if it's indirect, but it is quite heartbreaking to be honest."

The general secretary explained the food donations handed out to the community are significantly funded by charitable donations from within the community.

Adil added: "Charitable donations is the number one source of income for these things," he said.

"After that, of course, there are our partners such as Islamic Relief, as well as our other stakeholders.

"We apply for grants, we ask the council to help us with things."

The mosque has partnered with Islamic Relief for a major charity event this afternoon, which involved distributing meat and food parcels as part of the Islamic festival of Qurbani to help families and individuals affected by the cost of living crisis.

Delays to defence plan undermine UK credibility, MPs say

08 Jun 2026

Olivia Ireland

Delays in publishing a report laying out government defence spending have undermined the UK's credibility with its allies, a parliamentary committee that scrutinises public spending says.

The Defence Investment Plan (DIP) was supposed to be published in the autumn but is now due to be released ahead of a Nato summit early next month.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) says the hold-up means procuring the latest equipment will be more expensive, "hindering the government's attempt to modernise the Armed Forces".

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman said the DIP would "fix the outdated, overcommitted and underfunded programme we inherited", adding: "We are working hard to finalise it."

The DIP will explain how new equipment and defence infrastructure will be funded over the coming decade and follows the wide-ranging Strategic Defence Review (SDR) published on 2 June 2025.

Defence Secretary John Healey told the Commons on Monday that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was "determined to publish" it.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy insisted the plan "will be absolutely clear" before a Nato summit in July while speaking on the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday.

Asked if he would be happy to give up some of his own budget to ramp up money for defence, the justice secretary said defence was the "first purpose" of the nation, stressing that "the money will be found" to meet spending commitments.

The chair of the PAC, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, said that from the committee's point of view, the nation had "now in fact gone years without a credible plan for UK military capability".

"Those responsible may argue there are good reasons for the DIP's continuing absence, but our report makes clear that excuses to the effect of 'taking the time to get the details right' simply do not cut it."

Sir Geoffrey said that ministers should "simply apologise" instead of defending the delay in publishing the DIP, and should think about the message its absence has given "to the public, as well as the UK's allies and its adversaries".

The PAC report said the DIP's delay had been "due to the lack of a decision from the MoD as to which capabilities, infrastructure and people it requires to transform the Armed Forces to be warfighting-ready".

It said defence contractors were raising prices because of global instability, meaning delays to procurement could end up costing more.

Delaying the release of the DIP also meant an "inability to equip the UK's Armed Forces for the modern battlefield" and provide a stronger deterrent, undermining the MoD's credibility with the UK's allies as well as the defence sector.

In response, the MoD spokesman said that, since coming to power in July 2024, the government had signed more than 1,400 major defence contracts, adding it was providing "a generational increase in defence spending... ensuring no return to the hollowed out armed forces of the past".

One ally watching closely when the DIP is published will be Ukraine, after the UK has so far committed £13bn in military support for the country.

Sir Keir will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, France's Emmanuel Macron and German leader Friedrich Merz at No 10 on Sunday evening to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine.

Gen Sir Richard Shirreff, who chairs an advisory council for Ukraine's armed forces, told BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House "it's going to be very difficult for the prime minister to look President Zelensky in the eye" when he has "failed to put together" the promised defence investment plan.

The PAC report also highlighted specific concerns over existing defence spending, including ongoing issues with the Ajax armoured vehicle.

In November 2025, the army had to pause its use of the vehicles after soldiers became unwell from the noise and vibration issues, with some vomiting after leaving the vehicle.

The PAC report found a total of 33 soldiers had been affected by the issues, with five still under medical review as of March.

It said the MoD now expected soldiers to conduct maintenance checks every time they stopped the vehicles, which was "unreasonable" given that they might need to use the vehicles for long periods in combat operations.

It called on the MoD to explain how the current operating restrictions were realistic and appropriate.

"With an Ajax 2 package of upgrades now in development at an unknown cost, the PAC awaits to see, more in hope than expectation, whether these endeavours will succeed," the report states.

The vehicles currently in use are for trial purposes only. It is understood the government is proceeding cautiously with the programme and knows it has to rebuild confidence in the vehicles before they are put in service.

The PAC report also raised concerns about the MoD not providing "sufficient transparency over its ever-increasing nuclear expenditure".

The MoD spent 18% (£10.9 billion) of its defence budget on the UK's nuclear deterrent, which is expected to rise as high as 25% of the budget in the coming years, it found.

The UK is currently constructing new Dreadnought-class submarines to carry Trident nuclear missiles at an estimated cost of £31bn - though recent tests of the US-made missiles have failed.

The PAC said the MoD must set out how and when it will provide Parliament with more detailed cost and performance information about the UK's nuclear programme.

Its report said the MoD's accounts showed "a completely unacceptable failure to maintain accounting records to support £6bn+ of assets".

It is understood that the MoD's position is that the £6.1bn discrepancy relates to how funds paid over the past 15 years should be accounted for now.

The PAC's report makes six recommendations for the MoD:

It should write to the committee in three months to set out how it will use the DIP in the context of the changing international situation

It needs to "explain how it is mitigating the impact on suppliers of the delayed publication of its investment plan"

It must specify when it "expects that Ajax can be made fit for purpose"

It must set out how the 2025-26 financial statements are supported by its records

It should "identify initiatives to improve recruitment"

It must set out how and when it will routinely provide Parliament with more detailed cost and performance information "for the nuclear enterprise"

The MoD has also responded to a report that raised doubts about the readiness of the country's attack submarines.

All five of the Royal Navy's Astute-class submarines are awaiting repair work and unable to sail, according to the Mail on Sunday.

"Strengthening and sustaining our submarine capability is a top priority, and we are taking decisive action to ensure its long-term resilience," the MoD said in a statement.

"British waters are always protected with a range of assets including warships, patrol aircraft and submarines."

EU-backed Pashinyan declares victory before final Armenia vote count

7 Jun, 2026

Incumbent Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has claimed victory in the South Caucasus country’s parliamentary elections, saying his ruling Civil Contract party will form a single-party government, even though the vote count was still in its early stages.

Speaking at a late-night briefing, the EU-backed Pashinyan said Civil Contract had secured enough support to govern alone. At the time of his statement, Armenia’s Central Election Commission had published results from 455 polling stations, representing fewer than a quarter of the total.

The election has been billed in Western media as a turning point in the country’s modern trajectory, but has been marred by arrests of opposition candidates, a €50 million offer from Brussels, and deteriorating trade between Russia and Armenia.

What are the latest results from Armenia’s election?

According to preliminary figures, Civil Contract was leading with 49.8% of the vote after results from 1,420 of 2,005 polling stations had been processed.

More than 2.4 million people were eligible to vote on Sunday as 18 political groups – including 16 parties and two alliances – battled for seats in parliament. Voters showed strong interest in the polls, with final turnout standing at nearly 59%, an increase of almost 10 percentage points from the 2021 parliamentary election.

Parties must secure at least 4% of the vote to enter parliament, while alliances of two or three parties face an 8% threshold and larger coalitions 10%. No minimum voter turnout is required for the election to be valid.

Pashinyan’s ruling Civil Contract party is expected to remain the largest party in parliament, although it could still struggle to secure an outright majority. His leadership is being challenged by a fragmented opposition of 17 parties and political blocs.

How did the opposition react?

The opposition Strong Armenia bloc, trailing with 23.7% of the vote, said the election was “not over yet,” rejecting Pashinyan’s claim of victory as premature and accusing the authorities of deliberately delaying the count once results from urban areas started coming in.

“When they saw that their results were falling sharply every minute, they stopped counting, and we have no idea what figures they will present in the morning,” said Strong Armenia leader Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian-Armenian businessman. Speaking at an emergency briefing, Karapetyan claimed that the authorities had continued “illegal actions” during the count and said his bloc would issue a statement once the final results had been summarized.

Karapetyan also said Strong Armenia had faced heavy pressure over the past month, claiming that around 75 members of his team had been arrested and more than 700 supporters detained.

Has the opposition been persecuted?

The vote came a day after Armenian authorities detained six parliamentary candidates from the Strong Armenia bloc, which has emerged as the main challenger to the government.

This followed recent televised debates in which Pashinyan, who came to power in 2018 after the ‘Velvet Revolution’, called for several major opposition groups to be removed from the election. The Central Election Commission, however, declined to strike Strong Armenia from the ballot.

Opposition groups have accused the authorities of exerting heavy pressure ahead of the vote. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the arrests cast doubt on the democratic character of the election. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev accused Pashinyan of trying to sideline political rivals.

Was Armenia’s diaspora excluded?

Polling stations were open only in Armenia, as the country’s electoral laws do not provide for overseas voting in parliamentary elections. The measure excludes the diaspora, which far outnumbers the country’s population. Between five and seven million Armenians live abroad, mainly in Russia, the US, and France. Armenia’s domestic population is roughly three million.

To cast ballots, citizens living abroad must be present in Armenia on election day. In March, Yerevan further tightened the rules, barring those who have lived abroad for more than 10 years from voting.

Armenian officials have stated that male citizens of conscription age arriving from abroad to vote will be required to attend military training or face prosecution.

Is Armenia choosing between Russia and the West?

The election has also been framed as a referendum on Armenia’s geopolitical course. Critics argue that Yerevan’s pivot toward the West has failed to provide meaningful security guarantees while damaging relations with Russia, the country’s traditional ally and largest economic partner.

The campaign unfolded amid growing tensions between Yerevan and Moscow. Russia has warned that deeper integration with the EU would be incompatible with Armenia’s continued membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Russian President Vladimir Putin said in May that leaving the bloc could cost Armenia up to 14% of GDP.

Earlier this month, former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan accused Pashinyan’s government of artificially turning Armenia into an enemy of Russia and steering the country down a path similar to that of Ukraine.

French intelligence services allegedly helped the Armenian government block online publications critical of Pashinyan, according to French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.

Pashinyan admitted that he held a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron before publicly claiming victory.

Ukrainian drone hits Moscow-Crimea passenger train – governor

8 Jun, 2026

A Ukrainian UAV attack on a passenger train in Crimea has left one person dead and another injured, regional Governor Sergey Aksyonov has said.

The train was traveling between Moscow and Simferopol when the locomotive was hit by an “enemy drone,” Aksyonov wrote on Telegram early Monday.

“According to preliminary information, the train driver was injured, the assistant driver was killed, and none of the passengers were hurt,” he said.

Aksyonov expressed condolences to the friends and family of the deceased crew member and wished the injured driver a speedy recovery.

Bus transportation for the train’s passengers is currently being arranged, Aksyonov said, adding that the authorities will provide all necessary assistance.

Following the incident, operator Grand Service Express temporarily suspended services in Crimea, adding that all passengers on its trains on the peninsula were evacuated.

The attack comes days after eight people were killed and 11 others injured in a Ukrainian strike on a passenger bus traveling from Moscow to Simferopol through the Donetsk People’s Republic on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a Ukrainian UAV struck a suburban train traveling between Azovskoye and Kerch, Crimea, leaving one passenger dead and several others injured.

Moscow previously warned that it would carry out “systematic and consistent strikes” on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, including drone production facilities, command posts, and “decision-making centers,” in response to Kiev’s terrorist attacks. These included an attack on a college dormitory in the town of Starobelsk in the Lugansk People’s Republic, which killed 21 people, mostly teenage girls, and injured 70 others.

Last week, Russian forces launched another large-scale missile and drone barrage, targeting defense industry sites in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as locations in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy Regions, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Armenia’s PM falling into EU ‘trap’ aimed at Russia – diaspora leader

6 Jun, 2026

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is leading his nation into a trap by pushing it closer to the EU, World Armenian Congress President Ara Abramyan has said in an interview with RT. Brussels is luring Yerevan with vague promises as it seeks only to break Armenia’s ties with Russia, he believes.

Under Pashinyan, the South Caucasus nation has launched the process of seeking EU membership. Last month, the prime minister hosted an EU-Armenia summit and a meeting of the European Political Community (EPC), an EU-led intergovernmental group launched in 2022 in response to the escalation of the Ukraine crisis.

Moscow has said that closer integration with the EU would make Armenia’s continued membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) impossible due to incompatible standards. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in May that the South Caucasus nation could lose up to 14% of its GDP if it leaves the economic organization.

According to Abramyan, the alternative to the EAEU that is offered by the EU is unclear. “They don’t even talk about prospects, not even empty words,” he said, referring to the EU leaders. “No one says, ‘we will create conditions for a good life.’”

The bloc is unlikely to invite Armenia to join it or even open its market to Armenian goods, which are mostly agricultural products, any time soon, Abramyan, who leads the organization coordinating Armenian diasporas around the world, said.

Earlier this week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen vowed to “ease the trade for some Armenian products, in particular agri-food,” adding that Brussels had allowed a shipment of 10,000 flowers to Latvia.

According to Abramyan, the EU has reduced Bulgaria’s agricultural sector to virtually nothing, even though the country had once been a major agricultural exporter within the Cold War-era Warsaw Pact.

European farmers now oppose Ukrainian agricultural exports, he said. “How can they let Armenia in? […] It’s a deception. It’s against Russia,” Abramyan warned.

“They [the EU] want Russian bases [in Armenia] to be closed to completely ruin relations with Russia,” he said. “Armenia has one partner and that is Russia. This is a strategic partner.”

Armenia remains heavily reliant on the Russian market. According to UN data, Russia accounted for nearly 24% of Armenian exports in 2024, making it the country’s second-largest export destination after the UAE.

“They [the EU] want to destroy all of this economically,” Abramyan said, adding that following a pro-EU path could “destroy Armenia completely.”

EU may be ‘too late’ to stop migration ‘invasion’ – Hegseth

7 Jun, 2026

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth used a D-Day ceremony in Normandy to warn that Europe is under a new form of “invasion,” urging EU leaders to confront migration before it’s too late.

Speaking on the anniversary of the June 6, 1944 Allied landings in France, Hegseth said, “different European beaches are stormed by different, dangerous ideologies” in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria, where “boats and men arrive.”

“When will European capitals do something about that invasion? Or is it too late? I pray not, and I believe not,” he added.

D-Day marks the beginning of the liberation of France and Western Europe from Nazi rule. The troops who landed on Normandy’s beaches were not invading Europe in the sense used by modern immigration critics; they arrived to free territories occupied by Nazi Germany.

Hegseth’s remarks echo a broader narrative in the Trump administration linking migration to cultural change, security risks, and the erosion of national identity. The administration’s 2025 National Security Strategy warned that Europe faces “civilizational erasure” driven by migration.

US President Donald Trump has pursued a tough immigration agenda at home, expanding deportation efforts and high-profile ICE operations. Critics have raised concerns over due process and the treatment of migrant communities.

Hegseth’s comments come as the EU prepares to implement its most ambitious migration overhaul in years. On June 1, EU lawmakers and member-state representatives agreed in principle on new rules aimed at speeding up the deportation of rejected asylum seekers. The measures are designed to complement the Migration and Asylum Pact, which reforms asylum processing, border screening, and responsibility-sharing among member states.

EU institutions and migration experts estimate that only 20-30% of people ordered to leave the bloc actually do. The European Commission says immigration is needed to address labor shortages, with the EU workforce shrinking by around 1 million people a year.

The EU’s migrant population reached a record 64.2 million in 2025, including 46.7 million people born outside the bloc, according to a recent Berlin-based study using Eurostat and UN data.

Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris warned last month that the EU could be on the verge of a new migrant crisis, with more than half a million people waiting in Libya alone to cross into Europe.

‘They're crazy people’: Donald Trump calls Iranians ‘nuts’, says US must stop Iran from getting nuclear weapon

Jun 7, 2026

US President Donald Trump described Iranians as “nuts” and “crazy people” during an interview with NBC News on Sunday, while defending his hardline approach toward Tehran and insisting that Washington must prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump said the United States was acting to prevent a global catastrophe.

“I had to stop a country, very powerful, very dangerous country, from having a nuclear weapon because they'd use it. They'd blow up the world. They'd blow up the Middle East. They'd blow up Israel. They'd come here. They'd blow up Europe,” Trump said.

He added, “They're nuts, okay? They're crazy people. I deal with them. And very high-strung people. A little crazy.”

Despite the remarks, Trump also said he personally “likes” Iranians and framed US policy as a protective measure.

“And get along with them. I like them. But you don't want to let them have a nuclear weapon,” he said. “And I'm doing the world a service, but I'm doing our country a service, you know? It's America first. I'm doing our country a service.”

US push for Iran nuclear deal

The comments came as Trump outlined what he described as progress toward a possible agreement with Tehran over its nuclear programme.

Trump said the US could work with Iran to retrieve and destroy highly enriched uranium if a deal is reached, or otherwise act unilaterally to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

“If we make a deal that now we’re friendly, we’ll all go together. It’ll be our equipment. We’ll take it out and destroy it,” Trump said in the interview.

He added that if talks fail, the US would respond “very harshly” through military action.

Trump also said Iran had already conceded key ground in negotiations.

“They've conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons,” he said, adding that the two sides were “very close” to a pact.

Trump contrasts diplomacy with military pressure

Trump described a dual-track approach combining negotiations and military deterrence, saying US forces could remain in the region until the issue is resolved.

He also repeated his claim that Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities have been significantly weakened.

“We have totally destroyed their military,” he said, while acknowledging Iran still retains missiles and drones.

Trump said US surveillance capabilities, including “cameras up in space,” were being used to monitor developments in Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

The interview comes amid ongoing conflict-related tensions in the region, including continued US-Iran hostilities and broader instability in West Asia following strikes and counter-strikes between Iran, Israel and US forces.

Trump has consistently argued that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, linking the issue to regional security concerns involving Israel, Europe and the United States.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, Trump said he still sees a diplomatic path forward and suggested a deal could bring broader stability and economic benefits.

“We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. Can’t do it. And we won’t do it,” he said.

US Muslim rights group condemns Israeli attacks that killed 7 Palestinians

07/06/2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations denounced Israeli forces on Saturday for killing a seven-month-old infant in the occupied West Bank and six displaced civilians sheltering in a Gaza tent, urging Washington to halt military support for Tel Aviv.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations on Saturday condemned Israeli military attacks that killed at least seven Palestinians, including a seven-month-old infant shot dead in the occupied West Bank and six civilians sheltering in a Gaza tent, as the group urged Washington to suspend weapons transfers to Tel Aviv.

Deadly strikes on displaced families

An Israeli drone strike targeted a tent housing displaced civilians in Gaza City on Saturday, killing six people and wounding ten others, including children, according to Palestinian medical sources. The attack came less than twenty-four hours after Israeli soldiers opened fire on a family vehicle in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood of southern Hebron, killing a seven-month-old baby and injuring both parents.

Washington urged to halt military aid

CAIR — the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the United States — said in a statement that the murder of the infant and an Israeli massacre at a wedding in Gaza represented "horrific crimes that should shock the conscience of every person." "No military force that repeatedly kills children, medical workers, journalists, and civilians — using American taxpayer-supplied weapons — should continue to enjoy impunity or the support of our own government," the group said, calling on the international community to take concrete action to protect Palestinian civilians and end the occupation.

Ceasefire violations mount

The violence occurred amid continued Israeli breaches of the ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, Palestinian authorities reported. Since the truce began, at least 951 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 3,000 injured in near-daily Israeli attacks, while the occupied West Bank has witnessed escalating military raids, mass arrests and settlement expansion concurrent with the Gaza war that began in October 2023.

'I call the shots': Trump insists Iran deal on track amid fresh strikes, says Netanyahu has 'no choice'

Jun 8, 2026

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would have no choice but to accept any agreement negotiated by Washington with Iran, asserting that he was ultimately in charge of the process.

Speaking in a telephone interview with the Financial Times, Trump said that Netanyahu would have to go along with any deal reached between the United States and Iran.

"He won't have any choice. I call the shots. He [Netanyahu] doesn't call the shots," Trump said.

His remarks came as Iran launched 11 missiles towards Israel on Sunday in its first direct attack since a regional truce was announced on April 8.

In response, the Israeli Air Force said it carried out strikes on military targets belonging to the Iranian regime in western and central Iran, with the operation guided by Military Intelligence.

The latest exchange marked the violation of the ceasefire reached earlier this year and threatened to further complicate ongoing US efforts to secure a broader agreement with Tehran.

Despite the escalation, Trump insisted that the missile attack would not derail negotiations with Iran. "It's not going to have any impact on the deal," he told the Financial Times.

Referring to the Iranian missile barrage, Trump said: "We'll see how it ends up. But they were attacks that did not kick at all. It's one of those things that's been going for 3,000 years, or 47 years, depending on how you count."

While maintaining that diplomacy remained his preferred option, Trump appeared less confident than in previous weeks that an agreement was imminent.

When asked about the status of the talks, he said: "I think the deal is going on. We'll see what happens."

The US president reiterated that the recent exchange of fire would not affect Washington's approach to the negotiations. "The deal may make it on its own merit, or not, but this will not have any effect on it," Trump said.

Asked what would happen if a deal collapsed, he said the United States could either pursue further military action or continue exerting pressure through economic restrictions.

"It means two things. Number one, it would mean that possibly we would go in and take care of the rest of the place that we didn't take care of militarily. Or it would just mean that we would keep the blockade on Iran because the blockade has been probably more powerful than any attack that was ever made on that country," Trump said.

The comments came amid growing friction between Washington and Tel Aviv over the handling of Iran. According to Financial Times, Trump also spoke with Netanyahu following the missile attack and urged him not to retaliate as the United States continues to pursue a diplomatic settlement with Tehran.

Iran said the attack was carried out in response to an Israeli strike on Hezbollah-linked targets in Beirut's Dahieh district. Tehran has repeatedly stated that a lasting ceasefire involving Israel and Hezbollah remains a key condition for any broader agreement with Washington.

The United States and Iran have been engaged in indirect negotiations in recent months in an effort to ease regional tensions and reach an agreement on a range of issues, including Iran's nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

However, repeated military exchanges between Iran, Israel and Tehran-backed groups across the region have continued to cast uncertainty over the diplomatic process.

Donald Trump walks out of interview after being pressed for evidence of how Biden rigged the 2020 election: 'I’ve had enough'

Jun 8, 2026

US President Donald Trump abruptly ended a television interview with NBC's Meet the Press after a heated exchange with moderator Kristen Welker over his repeated claims that American elections are being rigged.

The interview centred on Trump's allegations about the 2020 presidential election and his concerns over vote counting in California. The discussion eventually escalated into a confrontation, with Trump accusing the media of dishonesty before removing his microphone and walking away.

The exchange began as Trump defended his proposed "anti-weaponisation fund", a plan he had previously announced to compensate people who believe they were unfairly targeted by the Biden administration. The proposal has since stalled after the Justice Department (DOJ) said it would not move forward.

"As I understand it, the weaponization fund was going to set up a group of people, people that could be picked by anybody, fair people, smart people, and they will go on an individual case basis," Trump said.

The POTUS added: "Now I don’t know what’s going to happen with the weaponization fund. I love the idea because people like you the fake dirty press, the crooked press, people like stupid Biden, he’s not smart enough to know what’s going on but people that surrounded him, surrounded his beautiful resolute desk in the Oval Office, what they did to the lives of people, they destroyed people. They sent people to jail who did nothing wrong."

Welker challenged the president's claims, saying no evidence had been presented to support them. As she attempted to move on to a question about acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and the future of the fund, Trump interrupted.

"Listen to me: There’s tremendous evidence," he said.

He added: "There’s nothing but evidence. The election was rigged. It was a dirty election, and it’s happening again right now in California. It’s happening right now in California, right now. Look at what’s happening in California."

Welker repeatedly asked Trump to provide proof. The president instead pointed to the slow pace of vote counting in California, where several races remained undecided days after the election.

"The Republicans are doing well in California," Welker responded.

"No they’re not. They’re dropping fast because it’s a rigged election," Trump replied. "Let me tell you, it’s four days and they aren’t even close."

When Welker noted that California allows ballots to be mailed up to election day, a process that often delays final results, Trump responded: "You know why they’re doing that? Because they’re cheating on the election."

Asked whether he had evidence, Trump said: "All I have to do is look. All I have to do is look and I listen, and I listen to people and let’s see what happens."

The interview became tense as the pair argued over election procedures and media coverage. Trump accused election officials, television networks and journalists of being dishonest.

"No, they’re crooked. They’re crooked, just like you’re crooked. Your press is crooked and Meet the Press is crooked," he told Welker.

When she replied, "To be fair, I’m not crooked, but let’s... ", Trump fired back: "Really? Well, you play right into their hands then. You’re either crooked or you’re stupid."

As Welker continued asking for evidence, Trump repeated his allegations and criticised news organisations.

"Your elections are crooked and you’re crooked and Meet the Press is crooked, and so is ABC and CBS and CNN," he said. "You’re one-sided crooked networks. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling."

Trump then removed his microphone and ended the interview. Welker urged him to stay, noting she had travelled to Wisconsin for the conversation.

The president defended his decision, saying: "I’ve given you enough time. You ought to straighten out your press because you know what, a country can never be great with a dishonest press."

He then walked out, bringing the interview to an abrupt end.

Trump abruptly ends NBC interview after clash over 'rigged election' claim

Brajesh Upadhyay and Dulcie Lee

Jun 8, 2026

US President Donald Trump abruptly walked out of an interview with NBC after being repeatedly challenged on several claims by the show's presenter Kristen Welker.

During the interview, which aired on Sunday's Meet The Press, the president claimed both the current primary elections in California and the 2020 presidential election were "rigged".

When pressed for evidence on California's vote by Welker, he said: "All I have to do is look, and I listen."

After the presenter replied "that's not evidence", Trump accused the media of being "crooked", before ending the interview: "Sorry, let's call it quits because I've had enough."

The president has had a fraught relationship with traditional media outlets, often accusing them of bias against him.

The interview, set in a barn as Trump appeared at an event with farmers in Wisconsin, was delayed repeatedly due to technical difficulties and rain hitting the metal roof. NBC reported that he walked out 50 minutes after sitting down for it on Friday.

Much of the interview involved Welker questioning Trump over the conflict with Iran, with him insisting the US needed to act to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and that it would not be "an endless war".

"We're there for a few months and the threat is largely over," he said.

Around six minutes before he left the set, the pair discussed the "anti-weaponisation" fund, a now-dropped plan to create a $1.8bn (£1.3bn) fund to compensate individuals who claim they were unfairly targeted or investigated by the government.

The plan drew strong criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, who argued it could result in payments to people prosecuted over the US Capitol riot on 6 January 2021.

The pair then moved onto discussing that riot, and Trump was challenged after he repeated his unsubstantiated claim that the 2020 election was rigged.

Trump turned to the California primary elections, where votes are still being counted to determine which two candidates in a series of races - including governor of the state - will be on the ballot in November's midterm elections.

He said the results had not been called after four days, adding: "They're cheating on the election."

"Do you have evidence to support that?" Welker responded.

"All I have to do is look, and I listen," the president replied.

"But that's not evidence," she interjected.

Full results have not yet been called in the state where delays are common due to a particularly meticulous vote-counting process and broad use of mail-in ballots. Mail-in voting has long irked the president.

"They're crooked," he continued, "just like you're crooked."

Welker said: "To be fair, I'm not crooked. But let's continue."

Trump then told Welker "you're either crooked or you're stupid", and after a further exchange said: "Let's call it quits because I've had enough. Thank you darling, have a good time."

Welker attempted to continue the interview, but Trump interrupted: "I've sat in the rain with you for an hour, on and off in the rain, and I've given you enough time.

"You ought to straighten out your press, because you know what? A country can never be great with a dishonest press."

He then gestured to people behind the camera, saying "come on, let's go", before standing up and walking off the set.

After the interview was broadcast, Welker said: "I spoke with President Trump on Saturday and we both acknowledged the complications during the interview posed by the rain. He agreed to sit down with me for another Meet the Press interview."

Five people injured in stabbing at New York City's Penn Station

Jun 8, 2026

Madeline Halpert

Five people have been injured in a stabbing at New York City’s Penn Station, officials say.

One person suffered a serious injury, two had moderate injuries, and the rest suffered minor injuries from the stabbing, the Fire Department of New York said in a statement shared with US media.

The New York Police Department apprehended the suspect after a manhunt following the attack, which took place around 19:00 EST (0:00 BST).

The stabbing comes as the city is heightening security measures before US President Donald Trump visits on Monday to watch the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA) finals.

Law enforcement told the BBC's US partner CBS News that the stabbing was a random act of violence. The suspect was emotionally disturbed and arrested by Amtrak police, ABC News reported.

The fire department said those injured in the stabbing were taken to Bellevue Hospital.

New York’s Penn Station sits directly beneath Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks will play the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA finals on Monday evening.

Ahead of the game, city officials announced new security precautions including a no-bag policy and a cancellation of a watch party outside the arena due to Trump’s presence. Mayor Zohran Mamdani will also attend.

Flesh-eating parasite forces Canada to ban Texas livestock

7 Jun, 2026

Canada has temporarily banned imports of livestock, including horses, from the US state of Texas over the outbreak of screwworm fly, a flesh-eating and potentially deadly parasite.

The first case of screwworm was identified in Texas on Wednesday, marking the first detection of the parasite in the US, roughly 80km (50 miles) from the Mexican border. The outbreak began in Central America in 2023 and has been spreading steadily northward ever since. By late 2025, Mexico had reported thousands of cases in animals and dozens of humans.

The second case was identified on Friday in the same area, prompting Texas officials to declare a state of disaster over the outbreak. The same day, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it would temporarily halt imports of livestock from Texas until further notice and “continue to work closely with US counterparts to assess developments and adjust measures as needed.”

The ban applies to all livestock that originated from or were present in Texas during the three weeks prior to entering Canada.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has condemned Ottawa’s move as an “overreaction” despite branding the outbreak an “imminent threat” as he declared a state of disaster.

“This pest affects live animals and does not impact inspected Texas beef. Canada’s broad restriction on Texas livestock is an overreaction that is more political than science-based,” the governor told USA Today in a statement.

The parasite, which in its adult form resembles a common housefly, lays its eggs into wounds and natural body openings of warm-blooded animals. The eggs – laid in hundreds by a single fly – hatch into parasitic maggots, which feast for about a week on living flesh, causing an extremely painful and potentially deadly condition. The maggots ultimately burrow out of the bodies of their hosts and dig into soil to pupate, emerging as an adult fly several weeks later to repeat the process.

The screwworm was declared eradicated in the US in 1966, in Mexico in 1991, and all across Central America by the mid-2000s. The program involved mass-breeding and release of sterile male flies into nature to destroy the population of the parasite. The resurgence of the fly in recent years has been attributed to changing weather and warmer temperatures, which are thought to drastically increase the range of the insects.

US Army preparing for first executions in 65 years – ABC News

8 Jun, 2026

The US Army is preparing to carry out its first executions of death-row service members since 1961 if President Donald Trump orders them, ABC News reports, citing an internal planning document.

Trump has advocated wider application of the death penalty as a deterrent against violent crime.

ABC News reported on Saturday that the plan – known as Operation Resolute Justice – was circulated internally in February and requires the military to be ready to carry out executions “no later than 150 days from the date of presidential approval of the death sentences.”

The preparations reportedly include reviewing execution procedures and transferring the four death-row inmates from the US Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to the federal execution facility in Terre Haute, Indiana in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Army spokesperson Cynthia Smith downplayed the preparations as a “standard component of our continued planning,” noting that Trump has yet to issue a specific order, as quoted by the publication.

Last September, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said he would seek presidential approval for the execution of Nidal Hasan. The former US Army major and physician was sentenced to death for the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting that left 13 people dead and 32 wounded.

The other three army death-row inmates include Sergeant Hasan Akbar, former army cook Ronald Gray, and former master sergeant Timothy Hennis, all of whom were convicted on multiple counts of premeditated murder.

During his first term in office, the Trump administration oversaw 13 federal executions – more than in any other presidential term in modern history.

Shortly after returning to office in 2025, Trump revoked a moratorium on federal executions imposed by his predecessor, Joe Biden, in 2021.

If Terrorism Sponsors Are In Government, They’ll Be Exposed – Akpabio

June 8, 2026

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue praying for the country, saying those behind terrorism and violent crimes must be identified and brought to light.

Naija News reports that Akpabio made the call during an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The event, themed God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams, attracted senior government officials, church leaders and worshippers who gathered to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to a statement issued by his media office, the Senate President recalled his time as governor of Akwa Ibom State, when he introduced monthly prayer meetings in response to growing cases of kidnapping, militancy and violent attacks.

He said prayer played an important role during that period and remains necessary as Nigeria continues to face security challenges.

Akpabio said Nigerians should continue seeking divine intervention so that those sponsoring terrorism, violence and other criminal activities can be uncovered, regardless of their position or status in society.

Speaking on the country’s history, he noted that Nigeria has faced and overcome many difficult periods, including political crises, health emergencies and insurgency.

He said the nation’s ability to remain united through such challenges shows its strength and determination.

He said, “When I had the opportunity to serve as governor about 19 years ago, I started monthly prayer. I used to ask myself a question whenever there was militancy, kidnapping and killing. I would say, what if we were not praying?

“Today I want you to ask the same question, the things happening around us, what if we were not praying. We must continue praying so that the evil doers and their sponsors shall be exposed in Jesus Name.

“If they are in government, they shall be exposed. If they are outside government, they shall be exposed in Jesus Name. Those sponsoring it, whether it is politically motivated or not, may they never have peace until they are defeated.”

The Democracy Day church service formed part of events commemorating 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria.

Prayers, unity key to ending banditry, kidnappings – Oyo Muslim leaders

June 8, 2026

The Muslim Community of Oyo State, on Sunday, converged at the Yidi Praying ground, Agodi, in Ibadan, Oyo State, to seek divine intervention amid rising cases of banditry, kidnappings and other criminal activities across the state.

They also called for unity among Nigerians, irrespective of their social, tribe or political affiliation, as the most potent weapon against insecurity threatening the nation.

The prayer, which was convened with the permission of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Abdulganiy Agbotomokekere, also drew clerics, community leaders and faithful from across the 11 local government areas that make up Ibadanland.

The PUNCH reports that over 40 teachers and students were kidnapped on Friday, May 15, 2026, during a coordinated attack at Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

Also, Mrs Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, who is a younger sister to the former power minister, Adebayo Adelabu, was kidnapped alongside her 12-year-old twin sons at Elewura-Challenge in Ibadan South West Local Government Area of the state, on Wednesday.

The abduction was carried out by some armed attackers who were said to have trailed the car conveying the victims from their home before flagging them down at 7.30 am at the scene of the incident.

The victims had, however, been rescued on Saturday, May 7, 2026, three days after abduction.

Speaking during the prayer session organised in Ibadan, on Sunday, the guest lecturer, Muyideen Onihantu, who is the coordinator of all Islamic preachers in the state, said, “The essence of the prayer is to seek God’s face over the insecurity that has robbed citizens of peace of mind.

“The session is not a Yoruba affair alone, as members of the Hausa, Nupe and Tapa communities were also in attendance to emphasise that unity, not tribal or political sentiment, remained the key to victory over the challenges confronting the country.”

Onihantu stressed that for prayers to be accepted, the people must be united, have faith in their Maker, support government efforts and shun partisanship, insisting that the matter at hand transcended political parties and bordered on the peace and rest of mind of all Nigerians.

Corroborating him, the Chief Imam of Sabo, Ibrahim Abdullahi, expressed gratitude for the meeting, adding that the gathering had shown the need for unity while praying for the safe return of abducted students and teachers.

He urged the government to do more than it was currently doing to secure quick results, lamenting that the rescue efforts were taking too long.

Speaking on behalf of the state chairman of the Muslim Community, Kunle Sanni, the state Secretary-General, Abidemi Siyanbade, said, “The community was deeply saddened by the abductions in Oriire, fearing that the incursion of bandits into the South-West through Ogbomoso could open the floodgates to other regions if not urgently checked.”

Siyanbade disclosed that reports indicated children were among the abductees undergoing harsh conditions in captivity, with some adults too frail to withstand the ordeal, hence the urgent need to seek Allah’s intervention for their speedy and safe release.

He said, “With the calibre of people present, representing the whole of Ibadanland and Oyo in general, Allah would answer the supplications and make the incident the last of such operations by criminal elements.”

Dismissing claims that the bandits were acting in the name of Islam, Siyanbade recounted the testimony of a freed victim who said none of the captors observed daily prayers, adding that they indulged in liquor, hard drugs and sexual assaults.

“They are not Muslims; they are criminals who are here to endanger the peace and tranquillity of our country.

“Let me use this period to advise Nigerians to rise through prayers and by providing timely intelligence to security operatives and the government,” he said.

He maintained that security is the responsibility of everybody and urged citizens not to keep silent when they see strangers or suspicious movements in their communities, describing the fight against insecurity as a war that must be won collectively.

Also speaking, the National President of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Mustafa Olumide, said the student body was worst hit by the unrest, hence the decision of the Muslim community to organise the prayer while security agencies intensify efforts.

He noted that God, who created the kidnappers, has the power to touch their hearts for the release of the children, but advised the government to overhaul the nation’s security architecture to match the mandate of protecting lives and property.

Olumide warned that if kidnappings were not halted, school enrolment would drop as parents were already withdrawing their wards from schools, particularly after the Oyo incident.

Dignitaries at the prayers included Rasheed Olawoore (Omo Oku Orun), the National President of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria; Tajudeen Mustapha, the National Secretary-General of the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations, Mas’ud Akintola, the state missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Bashir Elesinmeta, and the state missioner of Nasrul-Lahi-l-Fatih Society, Sheikh Sa’adudeen Adekilekun.

Ndume Seeks US Military Base In Borno To Fight Boko Haram

June 8, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Former Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, has called for a stronger United States military presence in Borno State to help eliminate Boko Haram insurgents operating in the North-East.

Naija News reports that Ndume urged American forces to establish a base around the Mandara Mountains, saying the move would help cut off insurgent routes and weaken terrorist operations.

The senator, who represents the Borno South Senatorial District, spoke on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Ndume said the United States had the technology and capacity to monitor insurgent movements from the Mandara Mountains to Sambisa Forest.

He stated, “I’m hoping that they could even go far beyond, as I said earlier, when the issue of Americans coming in was reported since last year. So I wish they could even establish their base under the Mandara Mountains and drive away all those Boko Haram elements from there.

“And then from the Mandara Mountains, it can serve as a point to even observe up to Sambisa. They have the technology to monitor those insurgents. So I am in full support.

“In fact, I am appealing. Let the Americans go to Gwoza and take over the Mandara Mountains, please. It will go a long way to cut down on insecurity because they have a ring road in Borno State.”

‘Cut Off Insurgents’ Supply Routes’

The lawmaker said the geography of the Mandara Mountains made the area important to the insurgent movement and logistics.

According to him, securing the area would disrupt supply routes used by terrorists across Borno State.

Ndume said, “So, from Sambisa, they can go to Lake Chad and come through the route in Kaga. From Kaga, they can go down through Mandaragirau or Buni Yadi and move on to Gwoza through Mandaragirau, as I said. With that, they have cycled to Borno State.

“So if that cycle can be cut off, we’ll have a reduction of insurgency. In fact, there will be nowhere for them to go to get support or supplies. But you can’t do that, as I said, without a team and enough boots on the ground. The Nigerian army needs the resources.”

NAF Deploys Surveillance Aircraft For Oyo Abducted Pupils, Teachers

June 7, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed an aerial surveillance aircraft to support efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Naija News reports that the NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the deployment during a courtesy visit by the representative of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh.

Makinde said the Air Force responded promptly after the abduction was reported by deploying a surveillance platform to assist security agencies involved in the search-and-rescue operation.

He said, “The NAF promptly deployed an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction was reported, providing critical intelligence to support search-and-rescue operations.

“Intelligence generated from the surveillance missions has continued to assist security agencies in tracking developments and coordinating efforts towards securing the safe release of the victims.”

The governor appealed to residents of the affected communities and the state to remain patient and support ongoing security operations.

He assured them that all necessary resources were being deployed to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted victims.

Makinde also commended the Chief of the Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their swift response and sustained support.

Oyo Awaits Own Aerial Assets

The governor said the surveillance aircraft was made available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets were still being assembled at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Lagos.

“The Air Force made the surveillance platform available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the NAF Base, Lagos,” he said.

Makinde explained that the state acquired the aerial platforms after consultations with the Nigerian Air Force to ensure access to maintenance support, engineering expertise and pilot training.

He expressed optimism that the assets would strengthen security operations in Oyo and neighbouring states once fully operational.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting efforts to rescue the abducted pupils and teachers.

He conveyed the NAF’s solidarity with the government and people of Oyo State.

Suleh said the Air Force would continue to work with other security agencies to tackle security challenges and ensure the safe return of the victims.

He also commended the Oyo State Government for supporting Nigerian Air Force projects and infrastructure development in the state.

On May 15, 2026, armed men attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The attackers abducted 39 students and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46.

The incident has renewed concerns over school security and attacks on educational institutions in parts of the country.

You Are Already A Terrorist – Tinubu’s Aide Blasts Critics Of Adelabu Family Rescue

June 7, 2026

By Justina Otio

Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, has slammed those questioning the rapid rescue of the family of former Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu.

Naija News reports that Adelabu’s sister, Olaide Adegoke and her twin sons were kidnapped on June 3 in Ibadan, Oyo State, and freed on June 6.

However, some netizens questioned the swift rescue while the Oyo schoolchildren and their teachers remained in captivity.

Reacting in a series of posts on 𝕏 on Sunday, Olusegun defended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force.

He argued that those unhappy with the development are no better than the terrorists.

According to him, “If you find yourself unhappy about the rescue of a woman and her children and jump on every conspiracy to try and downplay the efforts of law enforcement, just know you’re already a terrorist.

“You may not be carrying weapons yet, but your mindset and theirs are essentially the same.”

He further targeted individuals he accused of politicising the incident, describing them as “soulless” and alleging that they were using the kidnapping for political gain.

“Like I said, these soulless individuals do not care about the kidnapped kids in Ogbomoso, and this particular cretin couldn’t contain his joy over Adelabu’s sister and kids being kidnapped.

“For them, this is political cannon fodder that they can use to bulldoze their perpetual loser of a candidate into office,” he wrote while quoting another user.

In a follow-up response, Olusegun pushed back against claims that the current administration also criticised insecurity and undermined rescue efforts during its time in opposition.

“Never in our time in opposition did we celebrate gleefully and shamelessly the misfortunes of those who don’t agree with us.

You lots are soulless, and your justification today for losing your humanity is that ‘some people may have done it 12 years ago’,” he said.

The Federal Government has released funds to cover five months of outstanding Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance owed to lecturers in federal universities.

University authorities have also been directed to begin immediate payment to all eligible academic staff without delay.

Naija News reports that the directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in a letter dated June 4, 2026, addressed to vice-chancellors of federal universities.

The directive is part of the ongoing implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

According to the directive, the released funds are meant to settle the backlog of the allowance in line with the agreement reached with the university lecturers’ union. Vice-chancellors were asked to ensure that the money gets to the affected staff quickly.

The minister also instructed that universities which may have used internal funds or other sources such as internally generated revenue to cover the allowance from January 2026 should be refunded once federal allocations are received.

He directed that such refunds should be properly recorded in the appropriate accounts and budget categories.

University managements were further told to follow financial rules strictly and keep clear records of all payments and reimbursements linked to the allowance. They were also urged to treat the payment process as urgent and give it full attention.

The allowance is meant to support academic work in areas such as research, teaching materials, internet access, publications, and other tools needed for university duties.

Nigerian army frees 360 people abducted by Boko Haram

June 8, 2026

Nigeria’s army says it has freed 360 people abducted by Boko Haram in southern Borno.

The operation took place in the Mandara mountains, part of the militant group’s stronghold.

Two infants “succumbed to exhaustion" due to the challenging mountainous terrain and the hardship they endured during their prolonged captivity, an army spokesperson, Haruna Sani, said.

“The remaining rescued abductees were successfully evacuated to safe locations for medical care and humanitarian support, marking a major operational success and a significant setback for the terrorist group,” Sani said.

Nigeria is facing a complex security crisis in the north, including a more than decade-long insurgency and kidnappings by armed groups for ransom.

Among the most prominent Islamic militant groups are Boko Haram and its breakaway faction, which is affiliated with the Islamic State group and known as Islamic State West Africa Province. Last month, the West African country said its joint operation with the United States had killed 175 ISWAP fighters.

In May, Nigeria said its joint operations with the US had killed 175 fighters. But the insurgency has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.

Analysts say the government isn’t doing enough to protect its citizens, despite repeated promises by President Bola Tinubu to curb the crisis.

‘He often hugged me’: Mother remembers Iskandar’s affection before fatal Sungai Petani crash

08 Jun 2026

KEPALA BATAS, June 8 — A seven-year-old boy who was among six family members killed in a tragic road accident in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal, Sungai Petani, yesterday was buried at the Permatang Kuang Mosque Islamic Cemetery in Penaga at about 2am today.

Earlier, the body of Iskandar Affan Ibrahim, which underwent a post-mortem examination at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) in Alor Setar, was brought to his grandfather’s home in Kampung Permatang Kuang, allowing family members and relatives to pay their last respects before funeral prayers and burial.

In the 3.45pm accident, the sports utility vehicle (SUV) carrying seven family members is believed to have collided with a lorry. Six occupants were killed, while a three-year-old girl sustained serious injuries.

Those who died were Ahmad Shafiq Ahmad Shukri, 27; Nora Mhd Husin, 55; Jamaliah Sannusi, 27; Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, 21; a six-month-old baby boy; and Iskandar Affan. The seven-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe injuries.

The remaining five victims are expected to be buried at the Simpang Tiga Pasir Islamic Cemetery in Merbok, Sungai Petani.

Meanwhile, Iskandar Affan’s mother, Atikah Ahmad Syukri, 40, said she never imagined she would lose her youngest child, her mother and two younger brothers in the devastating accident.

She said her son had a keen interest in cars and would become excited whenever he saw one.

“When he wanted to follow his two uncles, I did not stop him. I never imagined they would be involved in an accident,” she said.

Atikah added that her son had been particularly affectionate in recent months, often hugging her even after being reprimanded.

“Several months ago, I had a feeling that I might lose my child in an accident. I never thought that feeling would actually come true,” she said.

It is understood that the family was travelling to Merbok to visit the graves of relatives when the SUV they were in was involved in the fatal crash. — Bernama

Kesuma backs MACC investigation into alleged Daya Kerjaya 2.0 irregularities, says Ramanan

08 Jun 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — The Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) has expressed full support for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into alleged irregularities involving claims under the Daya Kerjaya 2.0 Programme.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan, said the ministry remained committed to ensuring all government assistance programmes are administered with the highest standards of integrity, accountability and good governance.

He said the suspected irregularities were first detected through the Social Security Organisation’s (Perkeso) internal monitoring and anti-fraud mechanisms.

“Through its Anti-Fraud, Ethics and Integrity (AFEI) Division, Perkeso identified suspicious patterns and potential irregularities during internal data analysis conducted in late 2024,” he said in a statement today.

Ramanan said AFEI subsequently carried out intelligence gathering, surveillance and investigations throughout 2025 to verify the findings, gather evidence and establish the modus operandi behind the suspected abuse.

He said the findings were presented to the Perkeso Group Chief Executive Officer, who directed that the matter be referred to MACC for further action.

Following the directive, Perkeso formally handed over the case to MACC Perak in August 2025 and later worked closely with the commission through a joint investigation process, providing all relevant documents and evidence.

“As the case expanded, it was subsequently escalated to MACC Headquarters in Putrajaya,” he said.

Ramanan said the case demonstrated that Perkeso’s governance, compliance and anti-fraud mechanisms were functioning effectively, as the suspected abuse was detected through its own internal controls before being referred to the authorities.

He also commended AFEI officers for their professionalism, diligence and dedication in detecting, investigating and reporting the suspected misconduct.

The minister said the Daya Kerjaya 2.0 Programme was introduced to create employment opportunities and support vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, former prisoners, senior citizens and job seekers seeking to re-enter the workforce.

He stressed that any misuse of public funds or fraudulent claims would not be tolerated, adding that Kesuma and Perkeso would continue strengthening governance, verification and monitoring mechanisms while working closely with MACC and other enforcement agencies to safeguard public funds and ensure government assistance reaches its intended beneficiaries. — Bernama

Saifuddin Nasution says Pakatan has settled all 56 Johor seats, approval now rests with presidential council

By Anis Zalani

08 Jun 2026

PUTRAJAYA, June 8 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today said the coalition has finalised the allocation of all 56 state seats for the upcoming Johor state election following discussions at its secretariat meeting.

Saifuddin Nasution explained that the decision still requires formal endorsement from the PH presidential council, as his role is limited to managing and facilitating seat negotiations.

“The meeting finalised the allocation of 56 seats to be contested by the component parties of PH.

“However, as a matter of procedure, the decision must be presented to the presidential council, as I only chair the secretariat that oversees the seat negotiations,” he told reporters after the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly here today.

He added that only a small number of overlapping claims had arisen during discussions, similar to previous negotiations in Negeri Sembilan, and these had already been resolved.

Saifuddin Nasution said the next step is to present the agreement to the PH presidential council, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for formal approval.

“The next step is to obtain formal endorsement from the PH presidential council, which is chaired by the prime minister.

“I will present the outcome of the negotiations, and only then will the status be considered final,” he added.

‘In Johor, we have our own way’: Onn Hafiz draws distinction between state politics and federal BN-Pakatan cooperation

08 Jun 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Caretaker Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi today said DAP would not be part of a future Barisan Nasional (BN) state government in Johor, while stressing that the state’s political circumstances differ from those at the federal level.

In a Facebook post, the Johor BN chairman said the coalition would continue to govern on its own in the state as long as it retained the support and mandate of Johor voters.

“DAP has never been and will never be part of a Johor BN government,” he said.

“This is not about arrogance. This is also not about race. This is about principles, mandate and responsibility to Bangsa Johor.”

Onn Hafiz said he had a responsibility to respect the wishes of BN grassroots members in Johor who wanted the coalition to contest the next state election independently.

He also drew a distinction between cooperation at the federal and state levels, noting that BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) came together to form the federal government after the 15th general election when no coalition secured a parliamentary majority.

“At the federal level, BN cooperates with PH after GE15 on the decree of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, when no coalition had a majority to form the federal government.

“That situation is not the same as Johor,” he said.

According to Onn Hafiz, BN had received a clear mandate from Johor voters and had formed a stable state government.

“Alhamdulillah, we have formed a stable state government. We have proven our performance. And we have a responsibility to continue this work without being disrupted by political manoeuvring that could undermine the state’s stability,” he said.

The statement follows remarks by Onn Hafiz yesterday in which he said he would rather relinquish the menteri besar’s post than sit at the same table with DAP.

His comments come amid discussions over political alignments ahead of the next Johor state election, which must be held by 2027 unless the state assembly is dissolved earlier.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it would be “arrogant” to deny any race or political party a role in government after receiving support through the democratic process, although he did not refer to any specific party or individual.

Without directly addressing the prime minister’s remarks, Onn Hafiz reiterated that Johor’s political landscape should be viewed separately from developments at the federal level.

“In Johor, we have our own way.

“This is Johor Umno. This is Johor BN. This is Bangsa Johor,” he said.

PM Anwar says denying any race or party a place in government is ‘arrogant’

By Soo Wern Jun

08 Jun 2026

PUTRAJAYA, June 8 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said it would be arrogant to deny any race or political party a place in government after they had secured public support through the democratic process.

While stressing that Malaysians must move beyond merely tolerating differences and instead seek to understand one another, he said respect for the people’s choice is a fundamental principle of democracy.

“In a democratic system and practice, we must respect the people’s choice.

“Therefore, it would be arrogant for us to make decisions that deny any race or political party the right to participate in and be part of the government,” Anwar told a monthly assembly at the Communications Ministry today.

Without naming any individual or political party, Anwar said heated political campaigns sometimes lead to statements that go too far and that such excesses should be corrected.

He added that personal beliefs and perspectives are often shaped by people’s upbringing and life experiences, but warned that such differences should never result in attitudes that lack humanity.

“We did not choose to be Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban or Kadazan.

“We did not choose our ethnicity or the colour of our skin,” he said.

Drawing on Islamic teachings, Anwar said diversity should be viewed as a blessing rather than a source of division.

He said the Quran teaches that people were created as different communities and ethnic groups so they could know and understand one another and respect those differences.

“These differences can at times feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable, but this should not lead to intolerance.

“Diversity extends beyond differing opinions and includes differences in race, ethnicity, language and appearance.

“While racial harmony is often framed in terms of tolerance, Islam sets a higher standard through the concept of lita’arafu,” he said.

Explaining the term, he said it goes beyond simply accepting differences and instead calls for people to genuinely understand, appreciate and respect one another’s culture, language, customs and beliefs.

“It is not enough to merely tolerate differences,” he said.

“In building our society, we must strive to know one another, understand one another and respect one another.”

Anwar orders nationwide crackdown on visa abuse, illegal foreign-run businesses

By Soo Wern Jun

08 Jun 2026

PUTRAJAYA, June 8 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today ordered a coordinated nationwide crackdown on illegal business activities involving foreigners abusing tourist or student visas.

He said stern action would be taken against those found to have obtained business licences illegally, stressing that the government could no longer tolerate repeated violations despite numerous warnings.

“We have given countless warnings, but now action must be taken so that they stop this immediately,” he said.

Anwar said multiple agencies would be mobilised to tackle the problem, including through scrutiny of online trading activities, financial transactions, licensing compliance, tax payments and immigration offences.

“Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will study activities on e-commerce platforms and track money trails under anti-money laundering laws.

“Local councils and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) will verify the licensing status of traders, while the Royal Malaysian Customs Department will ensure taxes are properly paid. The Immigration Department will focus on the misuse of passes and visas,” Anwar told a monthly assembly at the Communications Ministry today.

Anwar also called on the Communications Ministry to highlight the issue publicly and convey a clear message that the Malaysian government would not take such wrongdoing lightly.

“I hope the Communications Ministry can highlight this matter and send a strong message across,” he said.

The prime minister said trader associations should also cooperate with enforcement agencies, noting that some organisations had failed to play a constructive role.

While acknowledging that some associations were aware of the issue, Anwar said others had proven unreliable and, in certain cases, had become intermediaries for illegal trading activities.

“Based on our experience through monitoring by local councils, not only have some not helped enforcement agencies, but they have ended up acting as agents for foreign workers, including collecting special fees from them,” he said.

Anwar also stressed the need to empower the public to report violations and called for greater use of digital tools and artificial intelligence to strengthen monitoring and detection efforts.

“I am stressing this because it has become a concern among Malaysians.

“I live in Sungai Long, and just the other day when I went for a haircut, the barber raised his concerns with me, how they are losing out on business opportunities,” he said.

He has also instructed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar to coordinate efforts across ministries and agencies to ensure enforcement measures are aligned and effective.

Concerns over the presence of foreign nationals operating businesses without proper permits have surfaced periodically in Malaysia, particularly amid allegations that some individuals enter the country using tourist or student visas before engaging in commercial activities.

Authorities have also previously raised concerns over the use of local nominees or proxies to obtain business licences and permits on behalf of foreigners, a practice commonly referred to as “Ali Baba” arrangements.

Anwar first raised the issue at last Friday’s Cabinet meeting and instructed authorities to take action against illegal foreign-run businesses.

His call for a multi-agency approach today was aimed at ensuring enforcement goes beyond raids and confiscations, with action supported by in-depth investigations and coordinated oversight.

Muhyiddin reaffirms Bersatu-PAS ties, says party to consider Perikatan proposals

08 Jun 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has reaffirmed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining good relations with PAS, saying proposals from the Islamist party to strengthen Perikatan Nasional (PN) will be considered by the party’s top leadership.

The Bersatu president said he had received a letter from PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan dated June 6 regarding relations between the two parties and proposals aimed at reinforcing the Opposition coalition.

“I have received a letter from the PAS secretary-general dated June 6, 2026, regarding the relationship between Bersatu and PAS as well as proposals to strengthen PN.

“I will give due attention to these proposals and bring the matter to the Bersatu supreme council meeting for deliberation,” he said in a statement last night.

Muhyiddin did not elaborate on the proposals contained in the letter.

The exchange comes after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said that the party was reviewing its cooperation with Bersatu.

Speaking on June 5, he said PAS’ ulama council had deliberated on the matter and left it to the party’s central committee to determine the appropriate course of action.

Abdul Hadi said the issue would be discussed at a meeting today alongside other party matters.

“InsyaAllah, we will discuss everything on Monday,” he reportedly said in Marang.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said in a Facebook post that the letter was a response to correspondence previously sent by Muhyiddin.

According to Afnan, Bersatu’s letter dated May 25 was itself a response to the earlier press conference by Abdul Hadi on relations between PAS and Bersatu.

“As there were matters that PAS needed to clarify further and in greater detail, PAS replied to the letter. PAS’ letter was only eight pages long (compared with the 13-page letter we received).

“The difference is that PAS did not issue a media statement simply to announce that it had received and replied to a letter,” he said.

Islamic Emirate Denies Presence of Armed Groups in Afghanistan

June 8, 2026

KABUL: The spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, Zabihullah Mujahid, has dismissed recent claims by the interior ministers of the Pakistani Military Regime and Tajikistan regarding the presence of armed groups in Afghanistan, asserting that no such groups are operating within the country.

Mujahid stated that the Islamic Emirate maintains full control over the entire territory of Afghanistan and that security forces have effective oversight across the country.

He added that allegations concerning the presence of armed groups in Afghanistan are not new and have been repeatedly raised over the years, including before the return of the Islamic Emirate to power.

The remarks came after the interior ministers of Pakistan and Tajikistan, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, expressed concerns that the presence of militant groups in Afghanistan could pose a threat to regional peace and security.

Shift from certificate-based edn

8 JUNE 2026

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday called for developing a skills-and technology-based, practical, and job-oriented education system in the country instead of a certificate-based one.

“In this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is no alternative to modernising and updating the traditional education curriculum to face the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation,” the PM said.

He was addressing the inaugural session of a training programme organised by the National University (NU) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. The programme aims to develop 12,000 college teachers across the country into skilled educators.

Highlighting the role of the NU in expanding higher education, Tarique said more than 40 lakh students are currently studying in over 2,000 affiliated colleges across the country.

Former prime minister late Khaleda Zia established this university in 1992 to resolve the crisis in higher education management and ensure education for all, he said, adding, this institution can play the most important role in expanding modern and technology-based higher education in the country.

Highlighting the government’s various initiatives to develop young people as entrepreneurs, Tarique said, “A decision has been taken to provide ‘seed funding’ or ‘innovation grants’ through a competitive process to commercialise ‘innovative business ideas’ in colleges and universities to create business entrepreneurs from the campus.”

Urging teachers to play a role as pioneers and role models for social change, the premier said, “If the country’s students and youth are transformed into a technologically skilled workforce, a prosperous and self-reliant Bangladesh will be a role model for the world.”

EU Nominates New Chargé d’Affaires for Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

June 7, 2026

The European Union has nominated Nicola Bellomo as its new chargé d’affaires for Afghanistan, as the bloc continues its diplomatic engagement with the country amid a deepening humanitarian crisis and ongoing concerns over human rights.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) announced the appointment as part of a broader reshuffle approved by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, which includes 33 new ambassadors and seven deputy heads of mission across the bloc’s diplomatic network.

Bellomo, who previously oversaw African affairs within the EU’s foreign policy apparatus and served as the bloc’s ambassador to Rwanda, is expected to replace current chargé d’affaires Veronika Boskovic Pohar in Kabul. The nomination remains subject to approval by the host authorities and completion of administrative procedures.

The European Union has maintained a diplomatic presence in Kabul at the chargé d’affaires level since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. While the EU has not formally recognized the Taliban government, it has continued engagement on humanitarian assistance, development issues and regional stability.

The appointment comes as Afghanistan faces one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. UN agencies estimate that millions of Afghans require humanitarian assistance amid widespread poverty, food insecurity, economic hardship and repeated climate-related disasters, while aid organizations have warned that funding shortfalls are limiting relief operations.

The EU has also remained one of the strongest international critics of Taliban restrictions on women and girls. European officials have repeatedly condemned bans on secondary and higher education for girls, limits on women’s employment and broader restrictions on civic freedoms, arguing that such policies continue to hinder Afghanistan’s international engagement and economic recovery.

Brussels has consistently stated that any future expansion of relations with the Taliban will depend on progress in human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls, as well as the formation of a more inclusive political framework in Afghanistan.

Luxembourg contributes €300,000 to Afghanistan humanitarian fund

By Fidel Rahmati

June 8, 2026

Luxembourg has contributed €300,000 to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Sunday, as humanitarian needs across the country remain severe.

OCHA said the funding will support the delivery of urgent, life-saving assistance to vulnerable families and communities, stressing that sustained international support remains critical to addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis.

The contribution comes as UN agencies warn that millions of Afghans continue to depend on humanitarian assistance amid worsening economic conditions, food insecurity and funding shortages. OCHA has repeatedly cautioned that declining donor support is limiting the ability of aid organizations to respond to growing needs.

Afghanistan is also facing the effects of recurring drought, water shortages and climate-related shocks that have devastated agricultural production in many provinces. Aid agencies say prolonged dry conditions have increased pressure on rural communities already struggling with poverty and unemployment.

According to the United Nations, more than 20 million people across Afghanistan require humanitarian assistance. UNICEF has estimated that 21.9 million people, including 11.6 million children, will need humanitarian support in 2026.

The humanitarian situation has been further aggravated by restrictions affecting livelihoods, reduced economic opportunities and the return of large numbers of Afghan refugees from neighboring countries. Humanitarian organizations have warned that without additional international funding, millions could face worsening food insecurity and reduced access to essential services, including healthcare, education and clean water.

Firm Action Against Crime a Must to Ensure Security

June 8, 2026

In recent months, certain social media outlets and biased networks have circulated exaggerated claims about rising armed robberies and criminal activity in Afghanistan, particularly in the capital Kabul. These reports, often lacking credibility and rooted in political motives, do not reflect the reality on the ground. Since the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, security has been established across the country, and the people of Afghanistan are experiencing a level of stability unseen in decades. Nevertheless, the responsibility of safeguarding citizens extends beyond the restoration of national security. It also requires decisive measures against crime in urban centers, particularly in the capital.

The Islamic Emirate has consistently emphasized that the protection of life, property, and dignity of the people is a sacred duty. While largescale threats such as insurgency and territorial instability have been eliminated, everyday crimes remain a challenge that must be addressed with seriousness. Citizens deserve to live with peace of mind, free from the fear of theft, fraud, or violence. It is therefore imperative that the responsible institutions intensify their efforts to combat crime with firmness and clarity of purpose.

The fight against crime is not merely a matter of law enforcement, it is a moral obligation. The Islamic Emirate’s security forces must demonstrate vigilance and discipline, ensuring that offenders are swiftly apprehended and punished according to the principles of justice. Such actions will not only deter potential criminals but also reinforce public confidence in the system. When citizens see that justice is applied without hesitation, they will feel reassured that their government stands firmly by their side.

Moreover, combating crime contributes directly to the broader vision of national unity and prosperity. A society plagued by theft and disorder cannot progress, no matter how strong its political foundations. By eliminating criminal activity, the Islamic Emirate strengthens the social fabric, allowing families to thrive and communities to grow in an atmosphere of trust. This stability is essential for economic development, education, and the overall wellbeing of the nation.

It must also be recognized that rumors and false reports spread by hostile elements aim to undermine the achievements of the Islamic Emirate. These attempts to distort reality should be countered with transparency and effective communication. By highlighting genuine progress in security and demonstrating visible results in crime prevention, the government can neutralize propaganda and showcase the truth of Afghanistan’s stability.

The Islamic Emirate has restored security across the country, but the mission is not complete until crime is eradicated with determination. The responsible organs must act decisively, ensuring that every citizen can live with a calm spirit. The people of Afghanistan deserve nothing less than a society where peace, justice, and order prevail under the leadership of the Islamic Emirate.
