UK-Based Tribunal Says Chinese Government’s Alleged
Forced Birth Control of Muslim Uighurs Amounts to Genocide
The tribunal does not have
government backing and the power to sanction or punish China [Alberto

----
DEC 10, 2021
An independent UK tribunal has ruled that China is
guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other Muslim
minority groups in Xinjiang.
The Uyghur Tribunal, chaired by British Barrister Sir
Geoffrey Nice, found China guilty of forced sterilisation, sexual violence,
enslavement, torture, and forcible transfer, all beyond reasonable doubt, they
revealed on Thursday.
The tribunal – which does not have legal force –
considered allegations of “the gravest human rights violations and
international crimes” against China, where experts estimate over one million
Muslims have been incarcerated in a crackdown against those practicing Islam in
Xinjiang.
“On the basis of evidence heard in public, the
Tribunal is satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that [China], by the imposition
of measures to prevent births intended to destroy a significant part of the
Uyghurs in Xinjiang… has committed genocide,” the judgement reads.
The Uyghur Tribunal heard from over 70 witnesses –
including experts and former detainees – over two sets of hearings in London in
June and September 2021.
They said it would be “more appropriate” for the case
to be dealt with by governments or international organisations, such as the UN,
but they “have no courage to do such things… where a powerful state is
involved”.
“The evidence that was put forward… shows there is
enough proof beyond reasonable doubt that there was an intent to commit
genocide,” Conservative MP Nus Ghani told the BBC following the
“groundbreaking” tribunal’s report.
The Chinese Embassy in London said last October that
the tribunal used “a handful of anti-China forces to deceive and mislead the public”.
In October, 43 countries called on China to “ensure
full respect for the rule of law” for the Uyghur community, in a statement read
at the United Nations.
The statement sparked outrage from Beijing, who have
long denied the accusations of human rights abuses.
This comes after Canada, the UK, and Australia joined
the US in a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics in February prompted by
the accusations.

Taliban Don’t Deserve To Be Recognized: Former US
National Security Advisor
US former National
Security Advisor John Boulton
-----
10 Dec 2021
US former National Security Advisor John Boulton said
that the Taliban have breached all their pledges thus he said that their
interim government must not be recognized.
In an interview with Voice of America, John Boulton
accused the Taliban of lying and added that they do not intend to establish an
all-inclusive government.
It comes as the Taliban’s interim set-up is yet to be
recognized and the move now seems difficult and far after the UNGA delayed a
seat for the Taliban and confirmed Afghanistan’s former permanent
representative Ghulam Muhammad Ishaqzai PR of the country.
“There is no reason for any country in the world to
recognize the Taliban at this stage. The US will talk with those who disagree
Taliban’s rule on Afghanistan.” Said Boulton
The former NSA acknowledged that his country is not
making trouble for the regular people in Afghanistan but what they don’t want
is the rule of the Taliban.
VOA has also cited the Taliban’s spokesman Zabiullah
Mujahid saying, Boulton was belligerent and that the two-decade war in
Afghanistan was because of the ideas of this kind of people.
Mujahid denied having breached their promises and
added that they are very well committed to the Doha agreement and will not
allow anyone to use Afghanistan’s soil against the US and its allies.

Unstable Afghanistan Will Become A Terror Safe Haven
Once Again: Pakistan NSA
National Security Adviser
(NSA) Moeed Yusuf
-----
December 9, 2021
ISLAMABAD: National Security Adviser (NSA) Moeed Yusuf
Wednesday warned an unstable Afghanistan will give birth to a refugee crisis
that may provide space to global terrorist organisations.
Yusuf appeared on BBC Hard Talk, which aired early Thursday,
where he talked with host Stephen Sackur about Pakistan’s updating security
policies, its position on Afghanistan and objectives for the much-hyped
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Objecting to the host’s opening remarks, Yusuf said:
“There was a policy employed by the United States and others who were there in
Afghanistan and it was a failing policy.”
He reminded Sackur that Pakistan was the only country
that had repeatedly stated that there was no military solution to the issue.
“Our advice was not heeded. We kept saying to
negotiate from a position of strength and we weren’t listened to. We are blamed
and scapegoated. The results are in front of you. The facts should be for what
they are,” he added.
He then clarified he was not defending the government
of the Taliban rather stressing the world must hold a conversation with them.
“Our message to the Afghan Taliban is identical to
what the world is saying more inclusivity, no terrorism from Afghan soil, human
rights for all and this what we want,” he added.
He quoted the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) boss in Afghanistan as saying: “It is the worst economic crisis and
humanitarian disaster we have ever witnessed.”
“There are 22.8 million people facing an acute food
shortage, 70 percent apportioning food, one million children acutely
malnourished. That’s the reality I have to face in Pakistan,” he told Sackur,
emphasising the seriousness of the crisis.
“Pakistan is a country that helped more than any other
nation and evacuated 49,000 people of 75 countries and created a land and air
bridge to Afghanistan asking the world to channel whatever they want from us
free of cost,” Yusuf recalled.
He regretted that the donor agencies like the UN and
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were worried since the money
couldn’t be brought into Afghanistan due to embargoes on banking channels.
He said Pakistan shared a 1,600-mile-long porous
border with Afghanistan and its experience of four decades depicted that four
million refugees were still in Pakistan after 40 years.
“Compare this to the EU, UK and US reactions towards
refugees shown up to your shores,” he asked the anchorperson.
“The moment Afghanistan is unstable my country goes
unstable as we have a centuries-old porous border which will cause refugee,
terrorism, drugs flow over into Pakistan,” he cautioned.
Prime Minister Imran Khan says Pakistan would accept
“any government in Afghanistan” but with a stable state, as any instability or
collapse of Afghanistan, Pakistan will be hurt the very next day, he said.
“As NSA of Pakistan, it’s my duty to tell the world
and as Prime Minister, it’s his [Khan’s] right to tell the world that the way
the international community is approaching Afghanistan its heading for collapse
and we are going to get hurt by it,” he noted.
He further added that Pakistan was not the one that
brought war to Afghanistan rather was the principal victim of this war.
“We didn’t have suicide bombings in our country before
9/11. Since 9/11, over 80,000 causalities of Pakistanis which the West just
likes to wish away. Over a $150 billion loss in the economy, 3.5 million
internally displaced persons and faced millions of Afghan refugees.
Are we mad […] we would be abetting something which
would bring such disaster to my country,” he said.
Yusuf said Pakistan was recognised by the UK and the
US and others for facilitating the Doha peace process whose endpoint should
have been a genuinely inclusive government.
“There is a government [in Kabul] that many don’t like
and it’s not recognised […] it’s at war against many countries but there are
35-40 million Afghans who have nothing to do with this.
Let’s agree they need to be fed immediately and I am
increasingly reaching the conclusion that the world probably does not care,” he
regretted.
To another question, he said: “When I talk about
Kashmir, I am talking about my people, not foreign nationals and also an
illegally occupied territory recognised as a dispute by the UN and this is my
right to speak about my people and not speaking about any foreign country at
that point in time.”
Commenting on the Pakistan-US ties and CPEC, he said:
“Pakistan is offering economic bases to the entire world for increased
investment in the region under the game-changer CPEC project as per its major
policy shift from geostrategic to geo-economic paradigm.”
Yusuf said Pakistan has made a major transition in its
all approach and thinking from a geo-strategic to a geo-economic paradigm.
“We look at ourselves as a melting pot for global
economic interests. It’s one key pillar is connectivity and the other is
development partnerships,” he added.
He added Pakistan wanted the entire world to come and
coexist in it in terms of economics. “We are no longer in the business of
offering military bases but our economic bases are open for all,” he
underscored.
The NSA while explaining about the CPEC project said
Pakistan enjoyed a strategic relationship with China and the ties were going
from strength to strength. “But that is not at the cost of any other country
that is what our geo-economic paradigm is all about,” he underlined.
He elaborated that there were no military bases in
Gwadar rather economic bases, adding: “And we offered the same to the US, the
Middle East and Russia. Anybody who wants to come and invest in Pakistan, we
are open.”
He mentioned the CPEC was energy and road
infrastructure that anybody could benefit from and invest in Pakistan.
Replying to another query, Yusuf categorically said:
“On the Xinjiang dispute, not only our ambassador in Beijing but teams from
Pakistan went there as well. We have a relationship of trust with China and we
are completely open [to each other].”
He rejected the western media accusations, saying: “We
do not accept the Western description of Xinjiang that’s set and if the West
has concerns you have every right, talk to China which is a sovereign country,
raise your concerns to them”.

No Place for Daesh/ISIS-K Terrorists In Afghanistan: Taliban Dy Minister And
Spokesman
Taliban spokesman
Zabihullah Mujahid
-----
09 Dec 2021
Deputy minister of information and culture and
spokesman of the Taliban Zabiullah Mujahid has again undermined Daesh/ISIS-K
(Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan branch) and added that the terrorists
have no place in Afghanistan.
In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency,
Zabiullah Mujahid said that 670 affiliates of ISIS-K have been arrested and 25
hideouts of the fighters were destroyed in the past three months.
Mujahid added that the safe havens were destroyed in
the Afghan capital Kabul and eastern Jalalabad city of Nangarhar province.
The spokesman added that ISIS-K is not a big threat in
Afghanistan and that this was a small group that has been dismantled in Kabul
and Jalalabad.
“The vacuum in Afghanistan created an opportunity for
the group to carry attacks immediately after August 15. There was no
communication system and security system fixed by the Taliban initially.” Said
Mujahid.
He accused former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani of
strengthening Daesh in the north of Afghanistan in order to use them against
the Taliban.
The statements come as there has been decreased in
attacks by the ISIS-K in Afghanistan.
The group has carried out four major attacks in Kabul
and provinces along with small-scale explosions since the Taliban takeover that
killed and wounded hundreds of humans.

UNHCR Urges the Islamic Emirate and the International
Community to Find A 'Modus Operandi' To Tackle The Current Crisis In
Afghanistan
Dec 10, 2021
KABUL: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
has expressed concern on rapid migration under the Taliban's rule from
Afghanistan to neighboring countries such as Iran.
A senior UN official urged the Islamic Emirate and the
international community to find a 'modus operandi' to tackle the current crisis
in Afghanistan, according to Tolo News.
Further, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, warned that the economic collapse of the country would
trigger a massive wave of migration to the neighboring and world countries.
"Ultimately, the Taliban, who are in control of the
country today, and the international community and its entities need to find a
modus operandi, need to co-exist with each other, need to make the necessary
steps for that to happen," he told the UN Security Council.
"The Taliban of course by delivering on the
all-important issues of the rights of women, women at work, rights of
minorities--and the international community by supporting it as it needs to
happen, the functioning of the state and all of this for the sake of the Afghan
people," he added.

BBC calls on Iran to end campaign of threats against
its staff
10 December ,2021
The BBC on Friday urged Iran to end what it said was a
mounting campaign of threats and intimidation against its journalists and their
families at home and abroad.
The corporation said staff from its Persian-language
service have endured a decade of harassment and attacks, including asset
freezes and arbitrary arrest of relatives.
“In the past year, threats against BBC News Persian
staff and Persian-speaking journalists outside Iran have escalated,” the
broadcaster said in a statement.
“Death threats and threats of extra-territorial harm
have been made towards BBC News Persian staff in London, leading to police
involvement and protection.”
The campaign has extended to journalists from other
organizations perceived to be critical of the regime, forced returns from
overseas and imprisonment, it added.
The UN has voiced concern about treatment of BBC
Persian staff, saying the authorities in Tehran were prepared to go to illegal
lengths to silence reporters.
The broadcaster’s World Service operation is part-funded
by Britain’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office but is editorially
independent of government.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries are
strained over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and its detention of dual nationals,
said to be linked to a historic unpaid debt from a military deal before the
shah was deposed in 1979.
BBC World Service’s lawyers Caoilfhionn Gallagher and
Jennifer Robinson said Persian service staff “receive threats of death and
violence simply for doing their jobs.”
“We call on the international community to take
immediate, robust action to ensure Iran is held accountable, and BBC News
Persian journalists can report without fear,” they added.
The general secretary of Britain’s biggest
journalists’ union the NUJ, Michelle Stanistreet, also backed the call, saying
Iran’s actions were “despicable and must stop.”
“It is not only completely unacceptable for them to
face such vicious personal intimidation, it is also a direct attack on press
freedom,” she said.

Turkey won’t confront Russia in event of war in ally
Ukraine
09 December ,2021
NATO-member Turkey has no interest in confronting
Russia in the event it invades Ukraine, despite growing defense ties cemented
by Ankara’s sales of armed drones to Kyiv, according to a senior Turkish
official.
Turkey isn’t coordinating steps on Ukraine with
Washington and is acting independently to safeguard its own interests, said the
official, who’s familiar with the country’s foreign policy.
For the latest headlines, follow our Google News
channel online or via the app.
The reluctance of Turkey, which has the second largest
army in NATO after the U.S., to militarily oppose Russia is compatible with
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s foreign policy maneuvering, the official said.
He wants to preserve Turkey’s interests from Syria to Libya and the Caucasus,
conflicts where Moscow is on the opposite side, according to the official.
The Kremlin has massed more than 100,000 troops on
Russia’s borders with its neighbor, along with tanks, artillery and other heavy
equipment, prompting fears President Vladimir Putin may order an invasion.

US preparing for outcome where no Iran deal is
reached: Senior US diplomat
10 December ,2021
The US is preparing for an outcome where no deal is
reached with Iran to curb its nuclear program, Washington’s lead negotiator
said Thursday.
But there is still time to reach a deal, and the US is
ready to get back into the 2015 nuclear deal “as soon as possible, as soon as
Iran is,” US Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley said.
For the latest headlines, follow our Google News
channel online or via the app.
The US and Iran have been engaged in indirect talks
over returning to the now-defunct JCPOA, from which former US President Donald
Trump withdrew in 2018.
Iran is demanding the lifting of all US sanctions
before returning to the deal in exchange for a cap on its nuclear program. The
previous agreement, brokered by former President Barack Obama, failed to
address Iran’s support for militias across the region and its ballistic missile
program.
“We are privileging the path of diplomacy,” Malley
told Al Jazeera, adding that it was the best way forward.
“We suspect it’s best for Iran, but Iran will have to
decide,” he said.
While the US has repeatedly voiced its willingness to
reenter the JCPOA, an acronym for the 2015 deal, it has also waited for almost
one year.
The Biden administration quickly said it wanted to
reenter the deal, but presidential elections in Iran resulted in a so-called
hardline government that stalled talks for months.
In the meantime, Iran has continued increasing the
materials and enriching the uranium needed for a nuclear bomb.

US and Israel ramp up pressure on Iran as diplomacy stalls
09 December ,2021
The United States and Israel increased pressure on
Iran on Thursday as nuclear talks stalled, with Israel’s visiting defense chief
calling for discussions on joint military readiness to be able to halt Iran’s
nuclear aspirations.
Reuters exclusively reported on Wednesday, citing a
senior US official, that US-Israeli discussions would include possible military
exercises to prepare for a worst-case scenario to destroy Iran’s nuclear
facilities should diplomacy fail and if their nations’ leaders request it.
For the latest headlines, follow our Google News
channel online or via the app.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at the start of
the meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Benny Gantz, that Iran had failed to
offer constructive diplomatic engagement in talks that President Joe Biden had
hoped would revive a 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by his predecessor, Donald
Trump.
Austin said Biden was “prepared to turn to other
options” if the current American policy on Iran fails.
“We are completely aligned in our commitment to
preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. This is a national security
interest of the United States and Israel and the world,” Austin said.
Gantz described Iran, Israel’s arch foe, as “the
biggest threat to the global and regional peace and stability.”
Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, saying it wants
to master nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. But sweeping demands by
Iran’s new, hardline government in talks have heightening suspicions in the
West that Iran is playing for time while advancing its nuclear program.
With the 2015 deal’s nuclear benefits now badly
compromised, some Western officials say there is little time left before the
foundation of the deal is damaged beyond repair. Under the accord, Iran curbed
its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions.

Biden asks for 'other options' if talks fail on Iran's
nuclear program
Servet Günerigök
10.12.2021
WASHINGTON
The White House said Thursday that President Joe Biden
asked for 'other options' from his team if talks fail concerning Iran’s nuclear
program.
"The President has asked his team to be prepared
in the event that diplomacy fails and we must turn to other options and that
requires preparations," spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a news conference.
Psaki reiterated that the only path out of sanctions
is through nuclear compliance.
"If diplomacy cannot get on track soon, and if
Iran's nuclear program continues to accelerate, then we will have no choice but
to take additional measures to further restrict Iran revenue producing
sectors," she said.
Iran and world powers kicked off talks in Vienna on
Nov. 29 in a last-ditch attempt to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of
Action (JCPOA).
The JCPOA was signed in 2015 by Iran, the US, China,
Russia, France, the UK, Germany and the EU.

Pakistani Taliban declare end to month-long ceasefire
with government
9 Dec 2021
Taliban militants in Pakistan have declared an end to
a month-long ceasefire arranged with the aid of the Afghan Taliban, accusing
the government of breaching terms including a prisoner release agreement and
the formation of negotiating committees.
The Pakistani Taliban, or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
(TTP), are a separate movement from the Afghan Taliban and have fought for
years to overthrow the government in Islamabad and rule with their own brand of
Islamic sharia law.
Last month’s ceasefire, which was always set to run
until Thursday with the possibility of extending if both parties agreed, was
the latest in a series of attempts to broker a settlement to end a conflict
that has killed thousands.
The Afghan Taliban’s shock overthrow of the
western-backed government in August gave the talks fresh impetus but the TTP
accused Islamabad of failing to respect the ceasefire agreement.
It said the government had not released more than 100
prisoners as promised and had not appointed negotiating teams to conduct talks.
It also said security forces had carried out raids while the ceasefire was in
force.
“Now let the Pakistani people decide whether it is the
TTP or the Pakistani army and establishment that is not abiding by the
agreements?” the group said in a statement.
“In these circumstances, it is not possible to advance
the ceasefire,” it said.

Imran, who skipped Biden summit, says Pakistan wants
to bridge US-China gap
Dec 10, 2021
ISLAMABAD: A day after declining to participate in
President Joe Biden’s democracy summit, Pakistan PM Imran Khan said on Thursday
that his country desired not to become part of any political bloc but instead
wanted to play a role in bridging gaps between the US and China. “The situation
is going towards a new Cold War and blocs are forming. Pakistan should try its
best to stop the formation of these blocs because we should not become a part
of any bloc,” Khan said while addressing the Islamabad Conclave 2021.
The US invitation to the virtual democracy summit had
put Pakistan in a difficult situation as Washington had invited Taiwan, instead
of Beijing, to represent China. Islamabad could not risk upsetting China, its
closest ally.
Moving to regional challenges, Khan said the biggest
problem keeping South Asia hostage was the “Kashmir issue”. He said his
government had reached out to India for peace but did not get apositive
response.

Baloch leader Mir Yousuf Masti held for making
‘anti-state’ speech in Gwadar
Behram Baloch
December 10, 2021
GWADAR: Police on Thursday arrested veteran politician
and Baloch Muttahida Mahaz (BMM) president Mir Yousuf Masti Khan on the charge
of making a “provocative and anti-state” speech at a protest sit-in staged by
the people of Gwadar.
The residents of Gwadar have been staging the sit-in
for the past 22 days in support of their demands under the banner of Gwadar ko
haq do movement launched by Balochistan general secretary of Jamaat-i-Islami
Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman.
Police registered cases against the BMM president
under sections 121, 123-A, 124-A, 153, 109 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Police arrested Yousuf Masti Khan from a hotel where
he was staying and later produced him before a sessions court. The court
remanded him in police custody for one day.
Protest by the residents of port city for rights has
been going on for the last 22 days
The Baloch leader reached Gwadar to express solidarity
with the people of Gwadar staging the protest sit-in.
The organisers of the sit-in claimed that police had
also registered cases against Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman.
They said that police also attempted to arrest the
leader of the movement but could not do so due to the presence of thousands of
people at the sit-in.
A heavy contingent of police and other law-enforcement
agencies was present in the sit-in area, but took no action against the participants
of the protest.
Speaking at the sit-in, Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman,
while condemning the arrest of the BMM leader, declared: “We are not afraid of
arrests and attitude of Gwadar police. Our peaceful sit-in is being pushed
towards violence”.
He said the people of Gwadar had decided to lay siege
to the police station against the arrest of Mr Yousuf, but the decision had
been postponed on the appeal of the Gwadar deputy commissioner.
“What does it mean to arrest an 80-year-old man?” the
Jamaat leader asked. “We are already condemning the FC and others for violating
the sanctity of chador aur chardiwari, but today Gwadar police played the role
of the FC.
He said that Pervez Musharraf and other generals were
violating the Constitution of the country, but they were not declared rebels
and traitors.
“We are demanding a ban on foreign trawlers fishing in
Balochistan’s waters and opening of border trade with Iran and Afghanistan to
ensure livelihood of the people of Balochistan, but we are declared rebels and
traitors by the government,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan
(HRCP) has condemned the arrest of veteran Baloch leader Yusuf Masti Khan in
Gwadar.

Talks with BJP-Led India Not Possible, Says PM Imran
Baqir Sajjad Syed
December 10, 2021
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday said
that Kashmir dispute could only be resolved through dialogue, but meaningful
engagement with the current government in India was not possible because of its
religious nationalism.
Speaking at the Institute of Strategic Studies
Islamabad’s (ISSI) ‘Islamabad Conclave-2021’, PM Khan recalled that South Asia
had been held back by political differences and conflicts and listed the
Kashmir dispute as the “biggest problem” holding the region back.
He said progress in relations between Pakistan and
India had been halted because his government had to deal with RSS’s extremist
ideology currently dominating Delhi. “Meaningful negotiations with India are
impossible as long as the government there is inspired by this ideology,” he
said, hoping that one day India could have a rational government with which
resolution of disputes could be sought through logical and sane discussions.
The prime minister expected that once the two arch
rivals resolved the core dispute of Kashmir they could then go ahead to jointly
fight emerging threats like climate change. He regretted that all of his
government’s peace overtures to India had so far been seen in Delhi as its sign
of weakness.
Fears US-China confrontation moving ‘towards new Cold
War’
PM Khan said he firmly believed that those seeking to
resolve disputes through war were mistaken. “They are either unaware of history
or they are too proud of their weapons,” he said, adding that they certainly
had no consideration for humanity. This, he warned, led to grave
miscalculations.
He underscored the need for resolving disputes till
the last moment through dialogue.
The prime minister also touched upon the aggravating
humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and the growing US-China rivalry. He
feared that the US-China confrontation was moving “towards a new Cold War” and
foresaw formation of blocs. “Pakistan should try its best to stop the formation
of these blocs because we should not become a part of any bloc,” he maintained.
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also highlighted
this concern in his remarks. “There is accelerated competition between major
powers, and a drift towards confrontation. This can lead to new rivalries and
push the world again into ‘bloc’ politics. A new Cold War seems to be taking
shape,” he observed.

Imran urges global effort to avert humanitarian crisis
in Afghanistan
December 9, 2021
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday urged
the international community to help Kabul avert a looming humanitarian crisis
in Afghanistan where a socio-economic collapse is looming.
Pakistan would make every effort to help address the
sufferings of the 40 million people of the neighbouring nation, he said while
addressing the inaugural session of the Islamabad Conclave 2021 on “Peace and
Prosperity in South Asia” at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) predicted that
almost 23 million people — more than half the population — will face crisis or
emergency levels of acute food insecurity before 2022 spring: the highest rate
ever recorded.
Afghanistan’s economy shrank by 40 percent after the
Taliban seized power in August, on top of the devastation wrought by
long-running conflict, the coronavirus pandemic and a severe drought.
Pakistan has argued it is time for the United States
to unfreeze the $9 billion in frozen foreign exchange reserves and resume
Kabul’s access to International Monetary Fund (IMF) resources.
For its part, Pakistan will host a meeting of the
Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
(OIC) on December 19 to deliberate on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
Khan said Pakistan through the platform of OIC would
play its part to reach out to the Afghan people who were in dire need of food,
shelter and medicines.
He mentioned the freezing of Afghanistan’s foreign
exchange reserves by the United States as one of the major factors behind the
economic and humanitarian crisis. He said that due to the crisis in
Afghanistan, Iran was also facing the burden of refugees.
The premier said peace in Afghanistan was not only
vital for the future of Pakistan but also for the Central Asian States which
were much interested in regional trade and connectivity.
Khan in his address spoke on various issues of
regional and international interests including Pakistan-India relations,
Kashmir dispute and climate change.
Prime Minister Khan while highlighting the importance
of resolving the Kashmir dispute for peace and prosperity of the region said
that the dispute had made the whole of South Asia hostage.
He recalled that after coming into power in August
2018, he contacted his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, and made efforts for
the resumption of dialogue to resolve the outstanding disputes in a peaceful
manner but New Delhi perceived it as Islamabad’s weakness.
The prime minister said he had a considered opinion
that the disputes like Jammu and Kashmir could only be resolved through
dialogue and not through “bomb and guns”. If the issues could be resolved
through bullets, the United States should have won the war in Afghanistan, he
observed.

15 EU countries to take 40,000 Afghan refugees in
10 Dec 2021
Commissioner of home affairs of the European Union
Ylva Johansson said that 15 member countries of the union have decided to
resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees.
Speaking on Thursday after meeting interior ministers
of the countries, Ylva Johansson said that this is impressive solidarity and
the more controlled way of resettling Afghans will prevent irregular
immigration of these people.
As per statistics, Germany will host 25,000 Afghans,
the Netherlands 3,159, Spain and France 2,500 each, and the rest of the
countries in lower number.
It comes as tens of thousands of Afghans mostly youths
are taking dangerous ways to get to Europe through Iran and Turkey that often
leading to the deaths of these asylum seekers.
There are now an estimated 85,000 Afghans who have
gotten closer to the European borders and approximately the same number are
waiting to find a way to get out of the country after the Taliban’s takeover on
15 August.

Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis may cause one
million death in winter: Crisis Group
09 Dec 2021
Crisis Group has warned that the ongoing humanitarian
crisis and winter season will cause one million death if not addressed and
sanctions are not lifted from Afghanistan.
The Group has called on the International community to
step forward and lift its sanctions to avert mass starvation as the country is
facing deadly winter ahead.
In the meantime, the group has warned that the ongoing
crisis and starvation will cause more deaths than the two decades of war in
Afghanistan.
“The Afghan state is falling after the world responded
to the Taliban’s takeover by freezing assets, cutting aids and offering only
limited sanctions relief for humanitarian purposes. Government employees lack
salaries, basic services are not being delivered and the financial sector is
paralyzed.” Reads the latest report of Crisis Group.
The reports also criticized the international
community to be the real culprit as they had made a dependent government to
foreign aid and then imposed sanctions on the country after they withdrew from
Afghanistan.

UN Political Chief Urges Taliban To Be Inclusive On
Three-Day Visit To Afghanistan
10 Dec 2021
The UN political chief ended a three-day visit to
Afghanistan on Thursday saying she had “frank and useful” discussions with a
wide range of people, including senior Taliban officials “about what needs to
be done to bring about an Afghanistan that is inclusive, abides by its human
rights obligations and is a resolute partner in suppressing terrorism.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that during her
discussions with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaqi and senior Taliban
representative Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, Rosemary DiCarlo “emphasized the paramount
importance of ensuring that all Afghans — men, women, youth and religious and
ethnic groups and minorities, as well — can all take part in governance and
public life.”
DiCarlo said in a statement that there is serious
concern about the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
“As I heard again during my visit, the women and girls
of Afghanistan want to be able to go to school, work and take part in public
life, free of discrimination,” she said.
“The progress that was made in this area must not be
erased.”
Women's rights activists in the Afghan capital, Kabul,
said earlier this month that a recent Taliban decree banning forced marriage
was not enough to address the issue of women's rights and they would continue
fighting for their rights to education, employment and participation in Afghan
political and social life.
The Taliban overran most of Afghanistan as U.S. and
NATO forces were in the final stages of their chaotic withdrawal from the
country after 20 years. Taljban forces entered Kabul on Aug. 15 without any
resistance from the Afghan army or the country's president, Ashraf Ghani, who
fled.
Thee Taliban initially promised tolerance and
inclusiveness toward women and ethnic minorities. However, Taliban actions so
far, such as renewed restrictions on women and the appointment of an all-male
government, have been met with dismay by the international community.

Right-Wing Groups Double Down On Namaz Protest,
Muslims Dig In Heels
Dec 10, 2021
The Gurugram Police and the district administration
are on high alert as Muslim groups on Thursday reiterated that they will offer
namaz on Friday at all 37 designated sites, and the Hindu outfits planned to
disrupt them and hold religious functions at those places.
Yash Garg, deputy commissioner, Gurugram, said no one
will be allowed to disturb peace in the city, and take law and order into their
hands. Gurugram Police said at least five police stations were “on alert” and
have been assigned duties for Friday.
“We have elaborate security arrangements and will
ensure the safety and security of people offering namaz,” Garg said.
Rajender Kumar, assistant commissioner of police, said
the police will ensure no confrontation will take place at spots where trouble
is expected.
“More than 100 policemen are deployed at suspected
spots, and we will ensure that no confrontation takes place,” he said.
Right-wing groups have been protesting against Friday
namaz in open public spaces in Gurugram since 2018. The same year, the
administration designated 37 sites for Muslims to perform the Friday prayers.
However, in November, the number of sites was cut down to 20 after members of
the right-wing outfits continued to protest and disrupt prayers. The Muslim
groups have maintained that they were forced to use public spaces since there
were not enough mosques in the city.
Hindu Sena members on Thursday said they will organise
a “bhajan programme” at the Sector 37 site on Friday, and have invited people
to join them. They said they were planning to park cars and trucks all over the
ground.
Praveen Yadav, a member of the Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh
Samiti, said nobody will be allowed to offer namaz at the Sector 37 site. “The
ground belongs to Khandsa village and no outsider will be allowed to encroach
it. The majority of Muslims coming to offer prayers here are from Bangladesh
and do not even have any identification card. They are being brought here to
disrupt the peace in the city,” he said.
Altaf Ahmad, spokesperson for the Gurgaon Muslim
Council, said the Muslims in Gurugram will offer namaz at all 37 sites, and the
administration will be responsible for their safety. “If any right-wing Hindu
outfit threatens us, or tries to confront us, it will be the responsibility of
administration and police to ensure our safety. We will visit the sites only to
offer namaz, and it is our right. If other groups want to give it a communal
colour, they should be booked and action should be taken against those creating
nuisance,” he said.
Members of the Hindu outfits added that they will
protest at the Sector 44 site.
Meanwhile, members of the Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti
and the Muslim Rashtriya Manch with the deputy commissioner to chalk out a plan
for Friday.
Mahavir Bhardwaj, state president of Samiti, said,
“The matter has been resolved as Gurugram Imam Sanghathan has agreed not to
offer namaz in the open and people who have vested interests are trying to
politicise the issue. Those offering namaz in public places will be held
responsible if any untoward incident is reported from that site (Sector 37),”
he said.

IED blast at Rohini court, cops probe terror angle
Dec 10, 2021
NEW DELHI: An improvised explosive device (IED),
assembled in a steel tiffin box and kept inside a laptop bag, exploded inside a
courtroom at the Rohini district court complex on Thursday morning, causing
panic. According to police, the explosion at room number 102 happened when the
court was in session.
The explosion, investigators said, was being probed as
an act of terror. It was of low intensity and a policeman deployed there was
the only one injured in the incident. However, the steel tiffin box was blown
to smithereens.
The nitrate-based device was activated with a timer,
and the person who planted it may have left the courtroom just before the blast
at 10.25am, sources said. The explosion couldn't happen with full intensity
because of a faulty circuit, cops suspect. A white powder found at the spot was
unburnt explosive powder.
With no outfit claiming responsibility for the
explosion, police suspect the involvement of a lone wolf or a group of youths
radicalised online.
Investigators are waiting for the final explosive
analysis report of the residual matter to comment on the nature of the
explosive used in the IED. Sources said that initial findings suggest it could
be ammonium nitrate.
The incident comes days after a shootout inside a
courtroom here in which gangster Jitender Gogi was shot dead by his rivals, who
were dressed as lawyers and waiting for him. The September 24 incident had led
to serious questions being asked about security at the busy complex.
Soon after the explosion, it was suspected that a
laptop may have exploded, but pictures of the blast spot circulated internally
amongst all units led the cops to launch a full investigation.
Fire officials said they received information about
the explosion at 10.40am, following which seven fire tenders were rushed to the
spot. The police control room was also alerted around the same time by a person
in the court about a blast of unknown nature.
The spot was cordoned off by the court security staff
and forensic units were alerted. Cops from Northern Range and New Delhi Range
of the special cell rushed to the spot. Forensic and NSG explosive teams also
reached the spot.
The white powder, which sources said was the residual
matter after the explosion, was found scattered at the spot along with parts of
a tiffin box and a laptop bag.
Police have filed an FIR under the Explosives Act and
the special cell is investigating the case. Due to injuries to the naib court —
a policeman who acts as a link between the jail, police station and court —
sections of the IPC have also been added. Raids are being conducted and the
information network has been activated, sources said. Footage from CCTV cameras
is being scanned for leads.

Teachers Call for Anti-Sexual Violence Rule across
Islamic Boarding Schools in Jakarta
10 December 2021
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Education and Teachers
Association (P2G) strongly urged the Religious Affairs Ministry to issue a
regulation that would help prevent and countermeasure sexual violence in
religious-based education institutions.
“This regulation is urgently needed considering that
the number of sexual violence in religious education intitutions are
considerably high,” said P2G national coordinator Satriwan Salim in a written
statement on Friday, December 10.
He reffered this to the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Research, and Technology which has issued a similar regulation for
general schools.
Satriwan believes administrators of Islamic boarding
schools (pesantren) and other similar education systems must be trained with
the understanding and skills on how to prevent and overcome a situation
involving sexual violence.

China guilty of Uighur genocide in Xinjiang, tribunal rules
By Madeline Roache
9 Dec 2021
London, United Kingdom – The Chinese government has
committed genocide, crimes against humanity and torture against Uighurs and
other minorities in its western province of Xinjiang, an unofficial and
independent UK-based tribunal has ruled.
Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, the head of the Uighur Tribunal
and prominent human rights lawyer, said the Chinese government has targeted the
Muslim Uighur population with forced birth control and sterilisation policies
in order to reduce the group’s population.
“The tribunal is satisfied beyond reasonable doubt
that the People’s Republic of China, by the imposition of measures to prevent
births intended to destroy a significant part of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang as
such, has committed genocide,” said Nice, who also led the prosecution of
former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic on war crimes and genocide.
He added that “this vast apparatus of state repression
could not exist if a plan was not authorised at the highest levels”.
The tribunal does not have government backing and the
power to sanction or punish China. But experts say that it will help to galvanise
governments around the world to hold China accountable for abuses.
The Chinese authorities have arbitrarily detained as
many as one million Uighurs and other minorities in 300 to 400 facilities in
Xinjiang, in the largest internment of an ethno-religious minority since WWII.
The US and several other countries have declared
China’s actions as genocide. But the United Kingdom has refused to do so.
China has repeatedly denied abuses
The Chinese government has repeatedly denied that
officials have committed abuses in Xinjiang, and has been unwilling to conduct
investigations or allow independent international monitors to do so.
The tribunal was established in September last year
with the help of the NGO Coalition for Genocide Response to investigate “ongoing
atrocities and possible genocide” against the Uighurs, Kazakhs and other Turkic
Muslim populations.
Organisers say the tribunal is needed because of the
various roadblocks to investigating the allegations of human rights abuses
against China in court.
The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC)
announced in December 2020 it would not investigate because China is not a
party to its court. While the International Court of Justice, the United
Nations’ top court, can only take a case that has been approved by the UN
Security Council, over which China has veto power.
“Civil society had to step up and create a court –
that’s what the Uighur tribunal is,” said Luke de Pulford, a co-founder of the
Coalition for Genocide Response and adviser to the World Uyghur Congress.
The tribunal has conducted “the most wide-ranging and
comprehensive assessment of the evidence about the Uighur crisis that any body,
including governments, has got,” de Pulford added.
A platform for survivors
One of the tribunal’s “critical functions” has been
providing a platform for survivors, Sophie Richardson, China director at Human
Rights Watch (HRW) said.
“It created a space for people to explain to the world
what happened and to raise public awareness of these ongoing crimes against
humanity,” she said.
More than 30 witnesses – including Uighur refugees,
lawyers and academics – gave evidence in three series of hearings this past
year.
Their testimonies included accounts of beatings, rape
and torture detention centres in Xinjiang – home to millions of Uighurs and
other Muslim ethnic minorities.
Uighur Muslims have been “subjected to acts of
unconscionable cruelty, depravity and inhumanity”, Nice said during Thursday’s
judgement.
“Up to 15 people are detained in a cell of 22 square
metres, not possible to lie down on the concrete,” he said.
Nursiman Abdureshid, a 33-year-old Uighur refugee
living in Istanbul, told the panel in June that her father was sentenced to
more than 16 years for “disturbing the social order and preparing to commit
terrorist activities”, and that her mother was handed a 13-year sentence for
supposedly “preparing to commit terrorist activities”.
She said she learned via the Chinese embassy in Turkey
that they were imprisoned on the basis that “they might have had the intention
to commit a crime”.
“That means there is no crime, and my family didn’t do
anything … The state randomly chooses people and transfers them from the camps
to the prisons,” said Abdureshid, who has not been able to contact her family
since 2017.
Abdureshid also described the pressure her
sister-in-law felt to abort her twin babies, afraid of the punishment she could
face as she already had two children.
Adrian Zenz, a senior, a fellow in China Studies at
the US-based Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, told the panel in
November about his peer-reviewed analysis of the effects of China’s birth
control policy.
His study shows that such policies could reduce the
ethnic minority population in southern Xinjiang by up to a third over the next
20 years.
According to official Chinese statistics, there was a
48.7 percent decline in birth rates in ethnic minority areas of Xinjiang
between 2017 and 2019.
What’s next?
The Chinese government did not respond to the
tribunal’s requests to take part in the proceedings. Even though the tribunal
does not have enforcement powers, Beijing imposed sanctions against the
tribunal and its organisers, including Sir Nice, for spreading what it called
“lies and disinformation” about the country.
Pressure from the Chinese government led witnesses to
decide not to give evidence because they were afraid of reprisals against their
families.
“The CPR has tried to delegitimise the tribunal from
day one,” De Pulford said.
The Uighur tribunal has urged the UK government to
step up and take various measures, such as putting additional sanctions on
China, placing import controls on products connected to Uighur slave labour and
publicly acknowledge that genocide is taking place in Xinjiang.
De Pulford said the judgement must be turned into a
“campaign instrument” to get governments to engage with their legal obligations
under the Genocide Convention Act – an international legal instrument that
imposes the duty on states to prevent and punish the crime of genocide.

Israel’s top diplomat in Egypt for talks on Gaza, Iran
December 10, 2021
CAIRO: Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid met
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Thursday during a rare visit to Egypt for
talks on the blockaded Gaza Strip and Iran’s nuclear programme, the two sides
said.
Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace
treaty with the Jewish state in 1979, after decades of enmity and conflict.
“I thank President Sisi, whose contribution to the
region and the relations between us is of historic proportions,” Lapid tweeted.
“I presented the president my ‘economy for security’ programme for Gaza and the
steps taken by the Israeli government with regards to the Palestinian issue,”
he added.
Egypt’s presidency also said the Palestinian issue
was a key priority.
In his meeting with Sisi, Lapid noted “Iran’s attempts
to become a country with a military nuclear capability as well as its continued
use of terrorism, and the threat this poses to the Middle East”.
His visit comes a month to the day after both
countries struck a security deal to boost Egyptian troop numbers around the
border town of Rafah in the restive Sinai Peninsula.
Egypt’s Rafah crossing is the only passage to Gaza not
controlled by Israel.
Militants in the Sinai have multiplied their attacks
since the army’s 2013 ouster of then Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi of the
Muslim Brotherhood.
Operations have been conducted against Islamist
militants across Egypt since February 2018. They have mainly focused on North
Sinai and the country’s Western Desert. Around 1,073 suspected militants and
dozens of security personnel have been killed in the operations, according to
official figures.

Return to 2015 Iran deal should only be first step to
longer, stronger deal: Saudi FM
09 December ,2021
Saudi Arabia would welcome a return to the 2015
nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, but that would “only be the first
step” in addressing Tehran’s malign behavior, Riyadh’s top diplomat said
Thursday.
“As previously announced, we continue to support a
return to the deal. But we see it as incomplete; any return [to the JCPOA]
should be only the first step towards a longer and stronger deal,” Prince
Faisal bin Farhan said in televised remarks.
For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News
channel online or via the app.
The US and Iran have been engaged in indirect talks
over returning to the now-defunct JCPOA, which former US President Donald Trump
withdrew from.
Iran is demanding the lifting of all US sanctions
before returning to the deal in exchange for a cap on its nuclear program. The
previous agreement, brokered by former President Barack Obama, failed to
address Iran’s support for militias across the region and its ballistic missile
program.
The talks also excluded regional countries that are
endangered by Iran.
“The current deal doesn’t protect us from an Iranian
nuclear or military capability,” Prince Faisal said.
US Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley, who is leading
the US delegation in Vienna, said that he held “another constructive conversation
with GCC partners” this week.
“We remain united in our call for a rapid return to
mutual JCPOA compliance. This is the best avenue to strengthen regional
economic ties and avoid nuclear crisis. We will remain in close consultation,”
Malley tweeted on Wednesday.

US official to discuss tightening Iran sanctions
compliance on UAE trip
09 December ,2021
The Biden administration is moving to tighten
enforcement of sanctions against Iran with the dispatch of a senior delegation
to the United Arab Emirates next week, the US State Department said on
Thursday.
The move comes as the UAE, a US ally, works to improve
ties with Iran in a bid to contain regional tensions and amid Western doubts
about Tehran’s determination to salvage a 2015 nuclear agreement.
For the latest headlines, follow our Google News
channel online or via the app.
The US delegation, which will include the head of the
US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, Andrea Gacki, will warn banks
in the UAE that have business with Iran and are not in compliance with the
sanctions.
A State Department spokesperson said the United States
had evidence of non-compliance, and that the banks could later be sanctioned or
penalized over their dealings.
UAE authorities did not respond to a request for
comment.
While the UAE shares the concerns of Gulf power Saudi
Arabia over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, missiles program and regional proxies,
Abu Dhabi has intensified its outreach to Tehran and sent a senior official to
Iran last Monday.
The UAE, which has business ties to Iran stretching
back over a century, had in 2018 said it was fully complying with sanctions
reimposed on Iran after then-US president Donald Trump quit the nuclear
agreement.
Under the pact, Iran agreed with major powers that it
would curb its nuclear program in return for the lifting of international
economic sanctions.
About a year after Washington reimposed sanctions,
Iran started violating the nuclear restrictions. Tehran denies seeking nuclear
weapons.

FM: Iran's Negotiating Team Attending Vienna Talks
with Clear, Practical Initiatives for Each Stage
2021-December-9
During the talks, Amir Abdollahian thanked the EU
foreign policy chief and his colleagues for their efforts, and described the
process of talks as good though slow.
He added that the Iranian delegation is participating
in the negotiations actively and in good faith as well as with necessary powers
and achievable and progressing initiatives.
Amir Abdollahian stressed that Iran’s participation in
any talks and action is aimed at removing the sanctions that violated the Iran
nuclear deal, JCPOA.
He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to continue technical
cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), adding that in
addition to the negotiations and meetings by Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Ali
Baqeri Kani, Iranian experts are also engaged in technical and expert
discussions with the G4+1 group of countries (Russia, China, Britain and France
plus Germany) in the form of sanctions removal and nuclear committees.
The Iranian foreign minister further referred to some
issues raised during the latest talks, saying despite the violations by the US
and inaction on the part of the European troika, we are attending the Vienna
talks in good faith.
Amir Abdollahian added that Iran’s negotiating team
has clear, tangible and practical initiatives for each stage.
He said the West must also offer its own initiative to
end the sanctions and end its previous slogans that violated the rights and
interests of the Iranian people.
“We believe that a good deal is at hand but it
requires a shift by some parties away from the language of threat to the
language of cooperation and mutual respect that would be also
result-based," Amir Abdollahian said.
Both Amir Abdollahian and Borrel described the current
atmosphere of the Vienna talks as positive.
Borrel who is also the Vienna talks coordinator, for
his part, described as important the serious efforts of all negotiating teams
from Germany, China, Russia, France, Britain, and particularly the Islamic
Republic of Iran to reach an agreement in Vienna.
He added that he instructed his deputy Enrique Mora to
make an effort to help reach a deal in constructive and active communication
with the top Iranian negotiator and all delegations. He called on all parties
to show flexibility during the talks.
Borrel expressed pleasure with the start of the talks
and said he and his colleagues in the EU are ready to help solve the problem.
Former US president Donald Trump unilaterally left the
2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action
(JCPOA), in May 2018 and re-imposed the anti-Iran sanctions that the deal had
lifted. He also placed additional sanctions on Iran under other pretexts not
related to the nuclear case as part of his “maximum pressure” campaign.
Baqeri Kani announced on Tuesday that Iran and the
five other parties to the 2015 nuclear deal are set to start a new round of
negotiations on December 9.
Baqeri Kani, who also serves as Iran’s deputy foreign
minister for political affairs, stressed that Tehran’s two proposed drafts in
the seventh round of talks last week can seriously advance the negotiation
process.
The senior Iranian diplomat said the two proposed
drafts were nothing new and were in compliance with the texts that had earlier
been agreed upon by both sides during the previous six rounds of the talks, but
with some amendments and additions meant to make up for the shortcomings.
Following a year of strategic patience, Iran decided
to let go of some of the restrictions on its nuclear energy program, resorting
to its legal rights under the JCPOA, which grants a party the right to suspend
its contractual commitments in case of a non-performance by the other side.
The administration of US President Joe Biden had
voiced willingness to compensate for Trump’s mistake and rejoin the deal, but
it has retained the sanctions as leverage.
After a five-month hiatus, envoys from Iran and the
G4+1 group of countries, Britain, France, Russia, and China plus Germany, began
on November 29 the seventh round of talks in Vienna to resurrect the JCPOA.

Children among 5 injured in missile attack on
UN-managed site in Yemen

GENEVA
Four children and a woman were injured in a dawn
attack on a camp for internally displaced persons managed by the UN in Yemen’s
Ma’rib Al Wadi district, the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
said on Thursday.
The IOM urgently called on all parties to the conflict
to respect International Humanitarian Law and protect civilian lives.
“Families have fled for their lives and come to this
site to seek safety from ongoing hostilities. Civilians should never be a
target,” said IOM Yemen’s chief of mission Christa Rottensteiner.
The injured, one of whom was critical, were taken to a
nearby hospital for treatment.
IOM said its teams are ensuring that the affected
family receives the medical care and other urgent assistance.
Al Hamma displacement site hosts nearly 250 households
made up of around 1,500 people.
IOM said it had provided shelter, essential relief
items, water, sanitation, and hygiene services since 2019.
No IOM staff were injured in the attack.
Yemen has been engulfed by violence and instability
since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels captured much of the country,
including Sanaa.
A Saudi-led coalition aimed at reinstating the Yemeni
government has worsened the situation, causing one of the world’s worst
man-made humanitarian crises.

Muslim Brotherhood ups campaign to postpone Libya
elections
09/12/2021
TRIPOLI –
A group of demonstrators affiliated with the Muslim
Brotherhood in Libya began a sit-in in front of the headquarters of the
Electoral Commission in the capital, Tripoli, to demand elections be postponed
until a referendum on the country’s constitution is held.
The sit-in signals an escalation by the Muslim
Brotherhood to postpone the presidential elections set for December 24. This
escalation comes after reports, very much doubted by one close Libya watcher,
that Islamists had reached a deal with parliamentarians affiliated with the
former Libyan National Army commander and presidential candidate Khalifa
Haftar, regarding the postponement of polls. Haftar stepped back from his LNA
role in order to be able to run.
The opposition of Libya’s Islamists to the
presidential elections does not come as a surprise. For years, the Muslim
Brotherhood has been pushing against polls, justifying its position by the need
to hold a referendum on the constitution first.
Videos posted on social media showed the moment when
protesters arrived at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission and set up
tents in front of the building to carry out a sit-in, raising slogans "No
to elections without a constitution."
Libyan media confirmed on Tuesday evening that the
demonstrators belong to the Ghenewa militia led by Abdel Ghani al-Kikli and
militias from Zawiya and Misrata which are also affiliated with the Muslim
Brotherhood.
Observers believe that the Muslim Brotherhood's
escalation, which comes after Islamist
leaders called for a sit-in in front of the headquarters of the Electoral
Commission, reflects the group’s lack of confidence that the caretaker Prime
Minister Abdelhamid al-Dbeibah, who is close to the Muslim Brotherhood and
Turkey, will win the presidency.
The Brotherhood's concerns over a Dbeibah's possible
electoral defeat rose after a Libyan court ruled that Seif al-Islam, a son of
the late Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi, can compete in upcoming presidential
elections, overturning a decision by the country’s top electoral body to
disqualify him.
Observers believe that the Muslim Brotherhood is
currently manoeuvring to postpone the votes for fear of losing its political
clout, especially in the light of the decline of Islamists’ popularity in the
North African country.
Parliament member Saleh Fahima called on political
actors to stop tampering with the elections, saying in a Facebook post, “When
you confiscate the judgment of the majority and impede the realisation of their
wishes in exercising their democratic right, that means that you have abandoned
the peaceful expression of your opinion and entered the process of trying to
subject the opinions of others to yours.”
Fahima stressed that the elections are not a goal in
themselves, but rather a means to reach political stability, adding,
"Whoever accepts democracy as a way to rule and a way to reach power, must
accept its results."
This comes at a time when attitudes are changing
regarding holding the presidential elections on time, with a radical shift in
the position of Libya’s parliament, the House of Representatives (HoR).
In fact, the HoR, which had earlier been pressing for
the vote to be held on time, is now moving toward postponement. During a closed
session on Tuesday, members reportedly discussed the developments of the
electoral process.
Informed sources told The Arab Weekly that the
meeting’s goal was to postpone the elections and block the release of the final
list of presidential candidates.
The candidacies of Seif al-Islam Gadhafi and Prime
Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah have confused the calculations of the House of
Representatives, which is close to Haftar, who is also running for the
presidency.
Over the past few days, Libya has seen court battles,
with appeals against Dbeibah’s candidacy and a challenge by Gadhafi’s son of
the Electoral Commission’s rejection of his candidacy.
On Wednesday, MP Ziad Daghim, who is known for his
support for Haftar and the Libyan National Army, called for the postponement of
the elections, echoing the Muslim Brotherhood's stance against holding the
polls on time.

The interior ministry said his “charred” body had been
found in the building.
Tunisian media cited judiciary sources as saying the
person had “set himself ablaze on the ground floor” of the building.
Former prime minister and Ennahdha Vice President Ali
Laaryadh was hospitalized after jumping from the second floor of the building
to escape the flames, as was advisory board head Abdelkarim Harouni, party
members said.
An AFP correspondent saw smoke pouring out of the
windows of the building in central Tunis as people clambered out.
The party’s president Rached Ghannouchi, speaker of
Tunisia’s suspended parliament, was not in the building at the time, party
official Mondher Lounisi said.
Ennahdha, a banned opposition movement under dictator
Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, has been the largest force in Tunisia’s parliament
since shortly after the country’s 2011 revolution.
