Trump kept out of war room, 'screamed at aides': What happened after US jet was shot down in Iran
Apr 20, 2026

A US jet shot down over Iran triggered chaos inside the White House, with President Donald Trump screaming at aides and kept out of the room as officials planned a high-risk rescue mission, reported The Wall Street Journal.
The incident unfolded on Good Friday after Trump was informed that two American airmen were missing. According to the report, he demanded that the military “go get them immediately,” pushing for rapid action despite the complexities of operating inside Iranian territory.
US forces had not operated on the ground in Iran for decades, forcing officials to assess how to enter hostile terrain and avoid detection by Iranian forces before launching any rescue attempt.
Aides, concerned that Trump’s impatience could disrupt planning, kept him out of detailed discussions as they received minute-by-minute updates, briefing him only at key moments, the report said, citing a senior administration official.
The incident also brought up Trump’s fears of a repeat of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis under Jimmy Carter, which he had previously described as a political disaster. “If you look at what happened with Jimmy Carter…with the helicopters and the hostages, it cost them the election,” Trump had reportedly said in March, calling the situation "a mess".
One airman was recovered quickly. The second remained behind enemy lines for more than 24 hours before being rescued late Saturday in a high-stakes extraction, averting what could have become a major setback for the administration.
Within hours of the rescue, Trump returned to a more aggressive posture, issuing a profanity-laced warning to Iran over the Strait of Hormuz in a social media post, drawing attention for its language and tone.
Critics say the approach lacks strategic coherence. Kori Schake told the Journal that battlefield gains have not translated into a clear path to victory.
The White House has defended the president’s handling of the situation, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying he has remained a steady leader during the conflict.
Meanwhile, in the latest developments, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz remain elevated, with the US military seizing an Iranian vessel in the Strait of Hormuz

Hidden heritage: 18th-century Kakrabad mosque falls into ruin
Apr 19, 2026

The Kakrabad mosque, also known as Almas ki Masjid. (Sourced)
---------
A short detour off the Ring Road, along narrow trails cutting through wheat fields and overgrown bushes, leads to a forgotten relic of Awadh’s past — crumbling, silent, yet not entirely abandoned.
The Kakrabad mosque, also known as Almas ki Masjid, is an 18th-century structure believed to have been built in 1776 during the reign of Asaf-ud-Daula. Today, it stands in a state of alarming decay. Located barely 11-12 km from the city, the mosque remains undocumented and largely unknown even to officials of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the state archaeology department, and the Waqf Board. A cursory online search yields only a handful of posts highlighting its deteriorating condition.
Only one of four minarets survives
“A couple of years ago, all four minarets towered over the landscape; today only one of them survives,” noted a 2020 post by the page ‘Mosque of India’, one of the few digital references to the structure. The post also observed that the lime plaster has long peeled off, exposing the underlying lakhori bricks to the elements and accelerating decay.
“Almas Ali Khan — a khwajasara (third gender), Hindu by birth, and part of the dowry of Bahu Begum at Faizabad — later rose to prominence under Asaf-ud-Daula with the title Rukun-ud-Daula. Known as a wealthy noble and prolific builder, he is credited with constructing an imambara, a karbala, and a palace in his estate, Almasbagh. He was also known for using distinctive ‘Almasi’ bricks, larger than the slender lakhori bricks common at the time,” Lucknow-based historian PC Sarkar said.
The mosque itself was built in the typical stucco-and-brick style of the period.
Today, however, little remains of that grandeur. Deep cracks run across the structure, sections have collapsed, and vegetation has crept into its weakening walls. Standing on the bank of the Gomti, its fragile silhouette struggles against time and neglect.
City-based architect and heritage conservationist Tauheed Haider recalls discovering the site by chance. “Every time I crossed Jehta from the Lucknow Ring Road, this centuries-old mosque would appear briefly in the distance,” he said.
“On an impulse, I took a detour along a narrow trail through wheat fields. There, nestled amid farmland, stood this forgotten structure — weathered, fragile, and in a deeply deplorable condition.”
Reaching the site was difficult, he added. “We had to navigate through dense bushes and repeatedly ask locals for directions to reach what was visible from afar. Situated on the bank of the Gomti, it is hauntingly beautiful.”
Despite its neglect and near invisibility in official records, the mosque continues to host a quiet, enduring tradition.
“Conversations with locals revealed another layer to its life. Qawwals still gather here every Thursday, filling these silent ruins with voices and devotion,” Haider said.
As the world marks World Heritage Day, the Kakrabad mosque stands as a reminder of the many lesser-known monuments slipping through the cracks — unprotected, undocumented, and on the verge of disappearing.

Iran not planning to attend talks with US in Pakistan
April 19, 2026

WASHINGTON: Iran is not currently planning to attend talks with the United States, state media said, after President Donald Trump ordered US negotiators to travel to Pakistan on Monday, just days before a ceasefire in the Middle East expires.
The ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports has been a significant sticking point, an issue further complicated by an American destroyer on Sunday firing on and seizing an Iranian ship that tried to evade it. Tehran warned it would retaliate.
State broadcaster IRIB on Sunday cited Iranian sources as saying “there are currently no plans to participate in the next round of Iran-US talks.”
The Fars and Tasnim news agencies had earlier cited anonymous sources as saying “the overall atmosphere cannot be assessed as very positive,” adding that lifting the US blockade was a precondition for negotiations.
State-run IRNA meanwhile pointed to the blockade and Washington’s “unreasonable and unrealistic demands,” saying that “in these circumstances, there is no clear prospect of fruitful negotiations.”
Iran and the United States, along with Israel, are just three days away from the end of the two-week ceasefire that halted the Middle East war, ignited by surprise US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.
There has so far been only a single, 21-hour negotiating session held in Islamabad on April 11 that ended inconclusively, though groundwork for fresh talks continued afterwards.
“We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it,” Trump said in a post on Sunday, while also renewing his threats against Iran’s infrastructure if a deal is not made.
US fires on Iranian ship
Trump has been under pressure to find an off-ramp since Tehran moved early in the war to choke off the Strait of Hormuz.
The vital waterway is a conduit for a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas in peacetime, and its closure has hammered the global economy and roiled markets.
Having failed to force it open again, Trump countered with a US naval blockade on Iranian ports in an attempt to cut off Tehran’s oil revenues.
On Sunday, he announced that a massive Iranian-flagged cargo ship “tried to get past our Naval Blockade, and it did not go well for them.”
A US destroyer warned the ship to stop and then forced it to “by blowing a hole in the engineroom,” Trump said, adding: “Right now, US Marines have custody of the vessel.”
Trump said the Iranian-flagged ship, Touska, is under US Treasury sanctions “because of prior history of illegal activity.”
The ISNA news agency later cited a spokesperson for Iran’s central command center as warning that “the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy and the US military.”
Iran had briefly reopened the strait on Friday in recognition of an Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire in Lebanon, but closed it again the following day in response to the United States maintaining its blockade.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that any attempt to pass through the strait without permission “will be considered cooperation with the enemy, and the offending vessel will be targeted.”
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei on Sunday said the blockade was “a violation” of the ceasefire and illegal collective punishment of the Iranian people.
A handful of oil and gas tankers had crossed the strait early on Saturday during the brief reopening, but by early Sunday morning tracking data showed the waterway empty of shipping.
The afternoon before, a trio of incidents involving Iranian fire and threats toward commercial vessels demonstrated the danger of any attempted crossing.
Heightened security
In spite of the uncertainty surrounding the talks in Pakistan, security was visibly stepped up in Islamabad on Sunday in anticipation of the negotiations.
Authorities announced road closures and traffic restrictions across the city, as well as in neighboring Rawalpindi.
The US president said his negotiators, whom he did not name, would arrive in the Pakistani capital on Monday evening.
A White House official said the delegation would be led by Vice President JD Vance and include Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
A major issue in the negotiations has been Iran’s stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium.
Trump said on Friday that Iran had agreed to hand over its roughly 440 kilograms of enriched uranium. “We’re going to get it by going in with Iran, with lots of excavators,” he said.
But Iran’s foreign ministry has said the stockpile, thought to be buried deep under rubble from US bombing in last June’s 12-day war, was “not going to be transferred anywhere,” and surrendering it “to the US has never been raised in negotiations.”
On Sunday, President Masoud Pezeshkian questioned why Iran should give up its “legal right” to a nuclear program.

London synagogue targeted in another attempted arson attack; Sadiq Khan vows strict action
Apr 19, 2026

An attempted arson attack was reported at the Kenton United Synagogue in north-west London, in a series of incidents targeting the Jewish community.
According to the Community Security Trust (CST), the attack on Saturday night caused minor smoke damage to an internal room, but there were no injuries or significant structural damage, BBC reported.
The building, located near a school and children’s playground, was cordoned off as police and fire teams investigated.
Forensic officers, fire investigation dogs and multiple police units were deployed at the scene, with a strong security presence continuing in the area.
What London Mayor said
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said perpetrators would face the “full force of the law” and reiterated that antisemitism has no place in the city.
I remain in regular contact with the Met Police, who have stepped up resources following a series of arson attacks in north west London. There will be a significantly increased police presence in the area, including around Jewish places of worship and businesses.
There is no…
Reacting to the incident, Ephraim Mirvis termed the attack “cowardly” and warned of a “sustained campaign of violence and intimidation” against Jewish communities in the UK.
Series of antisemitic attacks
The latest incident comes amid a spate of suspected antisemitic attacks across north-west London.
On Friday, a building in Hendon previously linked to a Jewish charity was targeted when a man attempted to ignite a plastic bag containing bottles of liquid outside the premises before fleeing. The attack caused minor damage and is also being treated as a hate crime.
Police are also investigating incidents in Finchley, where petrol-filled bottles were reportedly thrown at a synagogue, with arrests made earlier this week. No arrests have been reported in the Kenton case so far.
Earlier attack on Jewish ambulances
The escalation follows a major arson attack last month in Golders Green. Four ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer emergency service were set ablaze in the early hours of March 23.
Explosions caused by oxygen and gas canisters inside the vehicles damaged nearby properties and forced residents to evacuate.

Pope prays for healing at Angola shrine marked by slave trade history
April 20, 2026
Pope Leo XIV on Sunday delivered a message of peace and reconciliation at the Sanctuary of Mama Muxima, a revered Catholic site that once served as a hub of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Set along the Kwanza River, the sanctuary became a pilgrimage destination after reported Marian apparitions in the 19th century.
Yet the Church of Our Lady of Muxima was originally built by Portuguese colonizers in the late 16th century as part of a fortress linked to slavery.
Enslaved Africans were gathered there, baptized by priests, and forced to march more than 100 kilometers to Luanda before being shipped to the Americas.
Message of love over war
“It is love that must triumph, not war,” Leo said in a prayer invoking the Virgin Mary, urging believers to act as “messenger angels” spreading compassion and blessing.
Praying the Rosary inside the modest church, he recalled centuries of “sorrow and great suffering” endured by Angolans, without directly referencing slavery.
Debate over church’s legacy
The site reflects the Catholic Church’s historical entanglement with slavery, including forced baptisms and colonial doctrines that justified enslavement.
Papal decrees such as Dum Diversas and Romanus Pontifex underpinned the so-called Doctrine of Discovery, later repudiated by the Vatican in 2023.
Scholars say the visit holds symbolic weight, particularly for Black Catholics whose faith is closely tied to this history.
Calls for justice and unity
Addressing tens of thousands, Leo urged Angolans to build a society free of war, injustice and corruption.
Earlier, speaking near the capital, he condemned exploitation and called for reconciliation after years of conflict, while welcoming a ceasefire in Lebanon as a hopeful step toward lasting peace.

Anwar: Malaysia’s ‘active non-alignment’ helps cut red tape in global defence supply chains amid Middle East conflict
By Dhesegaan Bala Krishnan
20 Apr 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — Malaysia’s pursuit of active non-alignment enables it to maintain working relationships with major powers even during global uncertainties, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Speaking at this year’s Defence Services Asia and National Security Asia conference, Anwar said the policy allows Malaysian suppliers to easily penetrate global supply chains without encountering political complications.
Anwar said Malaysian companies manufacture high-quality wing structures and precision components, with one local enterprise holding a Tier 1 supplier status with a leading global aero-engine manufacturer.
“They have seen a government that follows through on what it commits to. They have seen an economy that held its ground while conditions around it deteriorated.
“And they have seen something that Malaysians ourselves do not say often enough: that this country makes things the world genuinely depends on,” Anwar told delegates at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre here.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Andul, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar were also present.
Anwar gave an assurance of intellectual property protection, enforcement of strategic trade controls and the creation of a conducive environment for companies to make commercial decisions.
He also highlighted Malaysia’s economic achievement amid the war in West Asia that continues to rattle investors globally.
“Yet in recent weeks, global funds bought over two billion dollars in Malaysian bonds, the highest inflow in 10 months.
“The ringgit has been Asia’s best-performing currency for two consecutive years. Our economy grew 5.2 per cent last year.
“Malaysia has also attracted record levels of investment, driven by manufacturing, semiconductors and aerospace.
“None of this arrived without effort. That work continues, and we will pursue it with discipline,” he said.

Building Trust and Unity: The Essential Role of Media in Public–State Relations in Afghanistan
April 20, 2026
In every society, the relationship between the people and the state determines the strength, stability, and direction of national development. This relationship is not built on force alone, nor on authority alone, but on something far more delicate and powerful: trust. In Afghanistan, where decades of conflict, political transitions, and social challenges have shaped public perceptions, the role of media has become even more essential in bridging the gap between citizens and government institutions. The media is not merely a channel for news; it is a cornerstone of understanding, unity, and national cohesion.
At its core, the media serves as a bridge between the government and the people. It carries information from state institutions to citizens, and equally, it reflects the concerns, needs, and voices of the public back to decision-makers. When this exchange is open, accurate, and responsible, it builds transparency and reduces misunderstanding. In a country like Afghanistan, where rumors and misinformation can easily spread due to limited access to verified information in some areas, credible media plays a crucial stabilizing role.
One of the most important contributions of the media is enhancing transparency in governance. When government actions, policies, and development projects are communicated clearly to the public, citizens are more likely to understand the intentions behind decisions. This understanding reduces suspicion and creates a sense of inclusion. For example, when infrastructure projects, public services, or reforms are properly explained through media channels, people are more likely to support them and even participate in their success. Without this communication, however, even well-intentioned policies may be misunderstood or resisted.
In Afghanistan’s context, where diverse communities live across urban and rural areas with different languages, cultures, and experiences, the media also plays a unifying role. It helps create a shared national narrative. Radio, television, newspapers, and digital platforms allow people from different provinces to access the same information, discuss common issues, and feel part of a larger national identity. This shared awareness is essential for strengthening unity in a country that has historically faced fragmentation and division.
Another key function of media is holding institutions accountable. A responsible media environment not only promotes government achievements but also highlights challenges, inefficiencies, and public concerns. This does not weaken the state; rather, it strengthens it. Accountability ensures that governance remains responsive and that public officials remain aware of their responsibilities. When citizens see that their concerns are being reported and acknowledged, their trust in institutions increases, not decreases.
However, the effectiveness of media depends greatly on its professionalism and independence. In Afghanistan, as in many developing contexts, media organizations face challenges such as limited resources, security concerns, and sometimes political pressure. These challenges can affect the quality and neutrality of reporting. For media to truly strengthen public–state relations, it must maintain accuracy, avoid sensationalism, and prioritize public interest over narrow agendas. Responsible journalism is not about taking sides; it is about providing truth in a balanced and constructive manner.
Equally important is the government’s attitude toward the media. A healthy relationship between the state and media is based on cooperation, not control. When governments engage with journalists, provide access to information, and respond to public concerns raised in the media, they demonstrate openness. This openness builds legitimacy. On the other hand, restricting information or ignoring media channels can lead to mistrust and weaken the relationship between citizens and the state.
In Afghanistan’s ongoing journey toward stability and development, media can also play a role in peacebuilding. By promoting dialogue, highlighting stories of cooperation, and giving space to diverse voices, media can reduce tensions and encourage understanding among communities. Positive storytelling about national achievements, cultural unity, and social progress can inspire hope and encourage collective responsibility among citizens.
Digital media, in particular, has added a new dimension to this relationship. Social media platforms now allow citizens to engage directly with information, express opinions, and interact with institutions. While this creates opportunities for greater participation, it also requires careful management to prevent misinformation. Digital literacy and media awareness are therefore essential for ensuring that citizens can distinguish between reliable news and false information.
Ultimately, the role of media in Afghanistan goes beyond reporting events. It is about shaping perceptions, building trust, and strengthening the emotional and institutional bond between the people and the state. A strong nation is not built only through policies and infrastructure, but also through understanding and communication. When citizens trust their government and the government listens to its people, national unity becomes stronger, and development becomes more sustainable.
In conclusion, the media stands as a vital pillar in the structure of modern governance in Afghanistan. It connects leaders with citizens, promotes transparency, encourages accountability, and fosters unity across diverse communities. By strengthening responsible journalism and supporting open communication, Afghanistan can move toward a future where trust between the public and the state is not an exception, but a foundation of national life.

The insider trading suspicions looming over Trump's presidency
Apr 20, 2026
Nick Marsh
Throughout US President Donald Trump's second term in office, traders have been betting millions of dollars just before he makes major announcements.
The BBC has examined trade volume data on several financial markets and matched them to some of the president's most significant market-moving statements.
It found a consistent pattern of spikes just hours, or sometimes minutes, before a social media post or media interview was made public.
Some analysts say it bears the hallmarks of illegal insider trading, whereby bets are made by people based on information that is not available to the general public.
Others say the picture is more complicated and that some traders have become more adept at anticipating the president's interventions.
Here are five of the most significant examples.
9 March 2026: 'The war is very complete, pretty much'
Some of the biggest movements have been in oil trades on the futures market.
Nine days into the US-Israel war with Iran, Trump told CBS News in a phone interview that the conflict was "very complete, pretty much".
The first time the public would have known about the interview was at 15:16 Eastern Time (19:16 GMT) when the reporter posted about it on X.
Oil traders reacted to this news that the conflict could end much sooner than expected by selling oil, with the price plunging by around 25%.
However, market data shows a huge surge of bets were placed on the price of oil falling at 18:29 GMT - a full 47 minutes before the reporter's post.
The traders who placed those bets will have made millions of dollars from the movement in oil prices.
23 March 2026: 'Complete and total resolution to hostilities'
On 23 March, just two days after threatening to "obliterate" Iran's power plants, Trump posted on Truth Social that Washington had held "VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS" with Tehran over a "COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION" to hostilities.
It was a major surprise to diplomatic observers and to traders.
Immediately, stocks rose and the US benchmark price of oil - which had been climbing - fell sharply.
As the BBC reported at the time, 14 minutes before the president's post there were an unusually high number of bets on the US oil price.
The same pattern was seen in traders buying contracts for Brent crude, the other major oil benchmark.
The trades appeared "abnormal, for sure," one oil analyst told the BBC at the time.
9 April 2025: 'Liberation Day' pause
Away from the war in the Middle East, there are other examples of trading activity that have raised eyebrows.
On 2 April last year, Trump announced what he called Liberation Day - a sweeping set of tariffs on goods from practically every country in the world.
Stock markets around the globe plunged.
But a week later when Trump announced a 90-day "pause" on the levies for all countries, except China, stock markets soared.
The benchmark S&P 500 index jumped by 9.5% - one of its largest single-day gains since the Second World War.
18:00 BST: Traders start making big bets on stock market going up
18:18 BST: Trump announces tariffs pause
18:19 BST: Stock market begins historic surge
Again, a pattern of unusual trading preceded these events with an unusually high number of bets ahead of the announcement on one fund that tracks the S&P 500.
The number of contracts traded jumped to over 10,000 per minute just after 18:00 BST. Earlier in the day the number had been in the hundreds.
Some traders bet over $2m on the stock market increasing that day, even though it had gone through seven days in a row of losses. The huge surge could have generated them a profit of almost $20m.
Later that week, several senior Democrats in the US Senate wrote to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) urging the financial regulator to investigate whether the president's announcements "enriched administration insiders and friends at the expense of the American public".
When asked by the BBC whether it had looked into these allegations, a spokesman for the SEC declined to comment.
The White House, meanwhile, did not respond to a BBC request for comment on any of the unusual trading activities analysed in this report.
3 Jan 2026: Maduro seized
Dec 2025: Burdensome-Mix account created
2 Jan 2026: Account puts $32,000 on Maduro being ousted
3 Jan 2026: Maduro is seized and Burdensome-Mix wins $436,000
The recent growth of online predictions markets has also drawn scrutiny from observers.
Blockchain-powered platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi offer users the chance to speculate on anything from the weather to baseball to US foreign policy.
President Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr, is an investor in Polymarket and sits on its advisory board. He also acts as a strategic advisor to Kalshi and has been contacted by the BBC for comment.
In December 2025, one user created an account on Polymarket called Burdensome-Mix. On 30 December, it placed its first bet on Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro being out of office by the end of January 2026.
Between 30 December and 2 January Burdensome-Mix placed a total of $32,500 on the position.
When Maduro was seized by US special forces and ousted the following day, Burdensome-Mix won $436,000.
Shortly afterwards, the account changed its username and has not placed any bets since.
28 Feb 2026: Strikes on Iran
Feb 2026: Six accounts created on Polymarket
28 Feb: Accounts win $1.2m between them
According to the blockchain analysis website Bubblemaps, six accounts were created on Polymarket in February.
All placed wagers on a US strike on Iran happening by 28 February. When the attacks were confirmed by President Trump in the early hours of that day, the accounts earned $1.2m between them.
Five of those six users have placed no more bets since, but one of the account's recent activity shows it has subsequently made $163,000 by correctly betting on a US-Iran ceasefire by 7 April, which was announced by Washington and Tehran on that day.
Polymarket told the BBC it "sets, maintains, and enforces the highest standards of market integrity", adding that it "proactively" works with regulators and law enforcement to do so.
In March this year, both Polymarket and Kalshi outlined new rules to crack down on insider trading.
Predictions markets come under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The CFTC did not respond to a BBC request for comment, but its chair recently told a Congressional committee that his organisation had "zero tolerance" for fraud and insider trading.
It has also surfaced that the White House sent an internal email to staff last month, warning them not to use insider information to place bets on predictions markets.
Spokesman Davis Ingle told the BBC at the time that "any implication that Administration officials are engaged in such activity without evidence is baseless and irresponsible reporting".
Hard to prove
Insider trading has been illegal for most Americans since the Securities Act was passed in 1933.
It was extended to cover US government officials in 2012, although to date no-one has been prosecuted under the law.
Paul Oudin, a professor who specialises in financial regulation law at the ESSEC Business School, says the rules are difficult to enforce.
"The financial authorities will not carry out a prosecution if they can't figure out who the source of information is," says Oudin.
None of the US financial authorities contacted by the BBC acknowledged any of the allegations of insider trading.
"You can have massive trades on a financial instrument that clearly show that someone was privy to what Donald Trump was about to declare," says Oudin.
"Yet there is a strong chance that no-one will be prosecuted," he adds.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford agrees to sell $21m private jet following outcry
Ana Faguy
Apr 20, 2026
The Canadian province of Ontario is now selling a jet recently bought for Premier Doug Ford, after he faced criticism for the purchase of the private, pre-owned jet for C$28.9m ($21m; £15.5m).
Ford's office had said he would use it for official travel, including to the US to advocate against the Trump administration's tariffs. But after confirming the purchase on Friday, he drew flak from political opponents who called it a "gravy plane" and "out of touch".
On Sunday, Ford said in a statement that it will be sold "as quickly as possible".
"Despite the best of intentions, I have heard and agree that now is not the right time for the expense of a government plane," he said.
Ford said the province was working with Bombardier and other partners on the sale. The plane is a Bombardier Challenger 650 executive jet, built in Canada in 2016.
"I will continue the work of building relationships with business and political leaders, both across Canada and in the United States, to fight tariffs, attract investments and create jobs for Ontario workers," he said.
Critics have been swift to paint the purchase as unnecessary. A taxpayers' advocacy group, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said Ford should "stick to flying commercial".
Marit Stiles, leader of the left-leaning Ontario New Democratic Party, claimed Ford only changed his mind after "the heat [got] too hot".
"Doug Ford is turning the plane around mid-air for an emergency landing because he got caught living like a rockstar on your dime," she said in a social media post.
Interim Ontario Liberal Leader John Fraser accused Ford of wanting to "live like a billionaire" with "your money".
"Trying to buy a private jet while families are struggling says everything you need to know about Doug Ford," Fraser said on social media.
Ford's polling hovers around 31%, according to an Angus Reid Poll from earlier this year. It is among the lowest in Canada for the premier who won a rare third-consecutive majority government last year.

Trump announces new Iran talks, warns ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’
19 Apr, 2026
The US negotiating team is heading to Pakistan for the next round of Iran peace talks on Monday, President Donald Trump has announced, while renewing his threat to strike Iran’s infrastructure if no deal is reached.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump accused Tehran of violating the temporary ceasefire – set to expire on Wednesday – with reported attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz amid a renewed blockade of the waterway.
“Iran decided to fire bullets yesterday in the Strait of Hormuz – a total violation of our ceasefire agreement! That wasn’t nice, was it?” he wrote, claiming French and British vessels were targeted. Before declaring that his “Representatives are going to Islamabad…for negotiations.”
He warned that there would be “No more MR. Nice Guy,” if Tehran didn’t take his “fair and reasonable deal.” Adding that Washington would “knock out every single power plant, and every single bridge, in Iran.”
A Fox News correspondent said Trump indicated that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would lead the delegation. Trump told ABC News that Vice President J.D. Vance would skip the talks over “security” concerns, but indicated that he “might go” himself if a deal is close.
The first round of talks in Pakistan failed to make progress, with Iran’s nuclear program remaining the main sticking point. Trump is demanding that Tehran dismantle its infrastructure and hand over its enriched uranium – proposals Iran has rejected as “non-starters.” President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that Trump has no justification to “deprive Iran of its nuclear rights.”
Tehran has not confirmed the next round, with Tasnim reporting it will not return unless Washington drops its “excessive demands.” However, Pakistani security sources told Al Jazeera that talks are likely before Friday, citing the arrival of two US C-17 aircraft near Islamabad, heightened security, and major hotels being cleared of guests.
Meanwhile, Iran has also escalated its rhetoric. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei called the US blockade of its ports “not only a violation” of the ceasefire but also “unlawful and criminal” under the UN Charter, amounting to a “war crime” and “collective punishment.” Iran said it was tightening control over the strait and warned mariners that the route was closed again, while army chief Amir Hatami vowed to defend the country’s “independence, territorial integrity, and security… until the last breath” if Washington restarts strikes.

Photographer Plans 90-Day Road Trip Across US to Document ‘Muslim America’
APR 19, 2026
A photographer is setting out to portray what Muslim America looks like with a 90-day road trip across the United States.
In 2021, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of 9/11, artist photographer Mahtab Hussain began a major series of portraits of Muslims in America. He produced portraits, with video and interviews, in six cities that explore the diversity of Muslim communities.
Hussain has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a road trip across the USA, aiming to complete his “collective self-portrait” of Muslim America. He is seeking support to expand this work through a 90-day journey traveling east to west and north to south, as he builds toward a larger body of work that reflects the presence of Muslims across the American landscape.
“With 9/11, a long shadow fell. For years, many Muslims felt they needed to be invisible to survive. But two decades on, a new generation is not hiding, wanting to be seen and understood, and who are shaping their styles and identities in distinctly American ways,” Hussain says. “This project is about how that presence feels. It is about belonging. It is about being woven into the fabric of the country rather than positioned as a problem within it. It is about spirituality in our daily lives.”
He plans to photograph Muslim communities in South Paterson, New Jersey; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Islamville, South Carolina; Islamberg, Tompkins, New York; Dearborn, Michigan; Horn Lake, DeSoto County, Mississippi; Houston, Texas; and the Grand Canyon, Arizona, among others.
“Everywhere I go, I will make portraits, videos and gather stories. The sitters for the portraits are not subjects in the typical sense — they are co-authors of a shared experience. I hope the series makes visible the powerful idea of “Umma” that connects Muslims across geography and background,” Hussain says.
“Through my work, I strive to reflect the richness and resilience of Muslim communities, celebrating their individuality while challenging stereotypes. Each portrait and installation is a story, an invitation to connect, and a reminder of the beauty in our shared humanity.”

The US is losing leverage over Western Europe
19 Apr, 2026
The United States’ greatest weakness in its relations with Europe is a simple one: it’s Washington that needs the continent more than the continent needs Washington.
America arrived in Europe as one of the victors of the Second World War. It established military dominance in the western part, embedded itself in the region’s security architecture, and for decades used Europe as a forward base in its confrontation with the Soviet Union. In doing so, it also shielded Western European elites from the threat of communist movements in the late 1940s. A favor that, paradoxically, was never fully forgiven in Berlin, Paris or London.
That lingering resentment doesn’t mean Western Europe is about to revolt against its transatlantic patron. Its elites are too cautious and too compromised for that. But it does mean that, whenever the US shows weakness, these Europeans will exploit it, opportunistically, and without sentiment.
That moment has now arrived.
Recent decisions by Washington have created an opening that Western Europeans are already beginning to use. The clearest sign came when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer unexpectedly ruled out joining a naval blockade of Iran. For those who still believe in the unbreakable unity of the transatlantic alliance, this may have seemed surprising. In reality, it is entirely consistent with the logic of US-Western European relations over the past 80 years.
Other major powers in the region are likely to take a similarly cautious approach. Even the threat of American pressure, including talk of weakening NATO commitments, is unlikely to push them into direct confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Western Europe understands something fundamental: without its presence on the continent, the US risks geopolitical isolation. The familiar narrative that NATO exists primarily to defend the locals from external threats is, in large part, a convenient fiction. It obscures a more basic reality, that it’s Washington which derives the greatest strategic benefit from maintaining this “special relationship.”
First, the loss of Europe as a territorial base would fundamentally alter the strategic balance between the US and Russia. The “grey zone,” the space in which confrontation can occur without immediately escalating into direct strikes on national territory, would disappear. Any conflict would become instantly more dangerous.
Second, the US would lose its ability to exert pressure on Russia by positioning military assets, including nuclear capabilities, close to its borders. Russia, notably, has no equivalent opportunity in the Western Hemisphere.
Third, a US withdrawal from Europe would render any meaningful strategic dialogue with Washington increasingly pointless from Moscow’s perspective, accelerating Russia’s pivot toward China.
In other words, America’s military presence in Europe is not an act of charity. It is a critical asset, a diplomatic and strategic lever in its broader competition with other major powers.
Western European leaders understand this perfectly well. And they also understand something else: the American security guarantee is not as absolute as it is often portrayed.
Even during the Cold War, few in Europe truly believed that the US would sacrifice New York or Boston in response to a Soviet strike on Paris. This skepticism shaped independent European strategies, most notably France’s nuclear doctrine, which prioritized direct deterrence against Soviet cities rather than reliance on American protection.
That logic has not disappeared. If anything, it has become more relevant.
NATO’s post-Cold War expansion has extended security guarantees to states of far less strategic importance than Britain, France or Germany. At the same time, recent events have demonstrated the limits of American power. The inability of the US to fully shield even small Gulf states from retaliatory strikes has reinforced doubts about the credibility of its security umbrella.
For decades, the transatlantic relationship functioned on a tacit understanding: Western Europe would pretend it needed protection, and the US would pretend to provide it. This arrangement suited both sides.
But the current US administration has disrupted that balance. Its erratic decision-making and narrow focus have created uncertainty, and, in doing so, given Western European elites an opportunity to strengthen their own position. And they are taking it.
This doesn’t mean the Europeans are breaking away. Two constraints remain decisive. First, the deep integration of their economies with American financial and technological systems continues to limit genuine autonomy. Efforts to reduce this dependence, through the euro or the EU’s single market, have had only partial success.
Second, Western European governments still require American power to manage their complex relationship with Russia. Despite the current confrontation, there is a long historical memory of eventual accommodation with Moscow. For now, however, there are few incentives for a rapid rapprochement.
What has changed is the balance within the partnership. These European elites, confident in their ability to manage domestic populations and navigate external pressures, now see greater room for maneuver. They will use it to extract concessions, reshape commitments, and hedge against American unpredictability.
Washington, meanwhile, has placed itself in a difficult position. It is attempting to stabilize relations with Russia, maintain control over Western Europe, and prepare for a strategic confrontation with China, all at the same time. These objectives are not easily compatible.
The result is vulnerability, not primarily to Moscow or Beijing, but within the transatlantic relationship itself. By its own actions, the US has given its European allies a series of advantages. They will exploit them, carefully but decisively.
What remains unclear is how Washington intends to regain the initiative, or whether it yet fully understands what it stands to lose.

Pope denies ‘tyrants’ speech aimed at Trump
20 Apr, 2026
Pope Leo has sought to downplay his public spat with US President Donald Trump, rejecting claims that he was trying to challenge the president with his criticism of the war in Iran and calls for peace.
Speaking to reporters on a flight to Angola on Saturday, the US-born pontiff insisted that his remarks were not meant to be confrontational, while criticizing the media for inflating the row through excessive commentary and speculation.
“There’s been a certain narrative that has not been accurate in all of its aspects… much of what has been written… has been more commentary on commentary, trying to interpret what has been said,” the Pope said. He stressed that his remarks in Cameroon earlier this week, blasting leaders who spend billions on wars and describing the world as “ravaged by a handful of tyrants,” were not directed at Trump.
“And yet, as it happens, it was looked at as if I was trying to debate the president, which is not my interest at all,” he said.
The Pope has criticized Trump’s policies in the past, including mass deportations and his description of Europe as “decaying,” though the war in the Middle East has raised tensions between them. He called on all sides to “stop the spiral of violence,” and described Trump’s threat to destroy Iranian civilization as “unacceptable.”
He added that God “does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war,” after US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth urged Americans to pray “in the name of Jesus Christ.”
Trump has described the pope as “weak on crime, and terrible for foreign policy,” adding that he does not want “a pope who criticizes the President of the United States.”
US Vice President J.D. Vance, who also previously criticized the Pope, welcomed Leo’s latest remarks.
“I am grateful to Pope Leo for saying this,” Vance wrote on X on Sunday. “While the media narrative constantly gins up conflict – and yes, real disagreements have happened and will happen – the reality is often much more complicated.”

What Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya’s life says about moral conduct and service to humanity
Apr 20 ,2026
Raziuddin Aquil
Constant vigil on moral conduct and seeking forgiveness from God are critical features of Sufism. Here, the focus will be on the conversations of the foremost Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, in Fawa’id-ul-Fu’ad, on this topic. The anecdotes or hikayats presented in some detail address a spiritual fraternity of people with a heart (ahl-i-dil), which was soaked in love for God and everything around. As Nizamuddin Auliya said, dervishes (members of Sufi orders) were seen to be so graceful in arguing their case that people wondered how elegant they might be when expressing their love for each other. Examples of conversations between Nizamuddin and his followers, given below, will further establish the emphasis on moral and ethical conduct in Sufism as well as the complete submission to the will of God.
Nizamuddin Auliya once told his audience that Prophet Muhammad had foretold that the five generations (tabaqat) of people after him, with each of the generations lasting for 40 years, would gradually fall into ruin. The first generation was that of the companions of the Prophet (sahaba). They were a fine set of people known for their spiritual knowledge and contemplation (‘ilm and mushahida). The second generation comprised the companions of the companions of the Prophet (tabi‘in), who were noted for their good deeds and piety (birr and taqwa). The third generation consisted of people who let the good things of the world go to people who desired to have them, and they shared everything for the love of God. Such characteristics were marked by attempts to make contact and connections with people with a sense of compassion (tawasul and tarahum). As the situation would deteriorate further from the point of view of Islamic piety, the fourth generation would include people who would resort to aggressive animosity (khusumat) to misappropriate everything, identified by cut-throat competitiveness (taqato, literally to cut). Analogous to it would be the conduct of the people who surreptitiously hoarded wealth, not sharing with others and turning their backs on others (tadabur, from tadbir or strategy for mindless self-interest at the cost of everything else). The fifth generation would constitute people who thrived in anarchy and chaos (harj-o-marj). They would kill each other to feed their self-interests, brutalising and killing each other in manners identified with wild beasts (gusht-o-pust-i yakdigar uftand o dar kushtan-i yakdigar shawand).
Thus, such would be the characteristics of the people two centuries after the time of Prophet Muhammad. Nizamuddin observed that after those 200 years, the situation would have deteriorated so much that the birth of a pup would be better than the birth of a human being (agar kasi sagi bachche bizayad beh, na farzand-i-adam). The Sufi master concluded that two centuries after the Prophet were long gone, so they could imagine the situation today, that is, the early decades of the fourteenth century. With tears in his eyes, he concluded, what could one say about the characteristics of our time (in sa‘at-i khwud mardum che guyad). In contexts like the above, Sufis could take a high moral ground through their superior conduct and nearness to God.
Sufis also thought they could perform better miracles than other non-mystics, such as yogis, who were treated as inferior. Some Sufis maintained a clear distance from the yogis, yet others engaged with them in discussions and even performed miracles together. A few anecdotes involving such interactions will illustrate the nature of dialogues and competitiveness in the spiritual domain.
Sufis believed some mystics could fly in the air, and they displayed this paranormal ability when provoked to do so. Nizamuddin Auliya narrated an account of such a challenge faced by Shaikh Safiuddin Gazeruni from a Yogi at Uchchh, in Sindh. The Yogi confronted Shaikh Safiuddin and suggested a contest of levitation between them, that is, they would perform the miracle of flying in the air (baya qadam be-namayam). The shaikh told the Yogi that since he was the one making such claims, he should perform the feat (shaikh guft da‘wi tu mi-kuni tu qadam be-nama).
The Yogi elevated himself off the ground and remained suspended so high in the air that his head touched the roof. Thereafter, he descended straight to the floor and challenged the shaikh to repeat the miracle. Shaikh Safiuddin raised his head towards the sky and prayed to God: you have blessed others with this skill, bestow to me also the ability to perform this miracle. Soon the shaikh was seen flying in all four directions – from west, to north and then to south before returning to the place where he sat. The Yogi was bewildered. He prostrated before the shaikh and confessed that his power was limited to performing straight elevation in the air and that it was beyond his capacity to take right or left turns. Marvelling at the shaikh’s ability to fly in various directions, the Yogi admitted that the shaikh’s practices were true and divinely ordained and his own practices were false. Sufi literature abounds in such narratives of encounters with yogis in which the latter are shown to be defeated and the superiority of Sufis is displayed.
Another account involving Yogi–Sufi conversations takes an interesting turn when Bibi Fatima Sam of Delhi suggested that Nizamuddin could marry the daughter of someone known to her. Fatima Sam was a formidable Sufi figure, personally known to Nizamuddin’s preceptor, Shaikh Fariduddin Ganj-i-Shakar, and commanded a lot of respect. Saying no to her would be an embarrassment to both her and Nizamuddin. So, the latter told her of his meeting with a Yogi who was visiting Shaikh Fariduddin’s hospice at Ajodhan, Pakpattan, now in Pakistan. The Yogi had made a proposition that the character of a child was determined on the day the child was conceived. Different days of the month had different characters assigned, and 29 to 30 different kinds of characters were already determined. The Yogi suggested that some people did not know the right time to have sex, and that is why sometimes useless creatures were born (farzandan keh bi-zauq bairun miaayand az an ast keh marduman waqt-i mubasharat na mi-daanand). On hearing this, the veteran Fariduddin scolded young Nizamuddin for wasting his time in such matters. Sufis were wary of yogic tricks, and Nizamuddin was meant to grow in the mystic path and therefore was wedded completely to God. Fatima Sam understood the message that Nizamuddin could not concern himself with matters of love and marriage, and withdrew the proposal. Marriage is a recommended practice in Islam, but many Sufis thought they could not handle the responsibilities that came with it and therefore remained unmarried (mujarrad). Their nights were spent in prayer, meditation and in remembering God, and their days were spent in service to followers, devotees and various visitors to the hospice, such as the yogis as we saw above.
Once, there was a discussion at Nizamuddin Auliya’s hospice about people kissing the hands of dervishes in anticipation of receiving blessings (khalq dast-i darweshan mi-bosand o barkat mi-talaband). Nizamuddin offered the perspective from the other side: dervishes who offer their hands for kissing wish and pray that they get the hands of a blessed person to hold! Sufis had also realised that since so many people kissed their hands and prostrated before them, it was also possible that some antagonists would throw stones at them. This could perhaps be as part of a divine strategy to keep them grounded and in balance (mizan). Sufis would take such attacks gracefully, with jamal. But if the nature of opposition was perceived as devious, demonic or satanic, they needed to be suppressed with a heavy and wrathful hand, with jalal. Sufis could, it was believed, break the neck of the detractors and even curse them to be dispatched to hell! Hence, most people had wished to be on the right side of the Sufis, seeking blessings and benediction, and soaking themselves in the language of love and belonging of the spiritual kind.
For people visiting Sufis seeking amulets (ta‘wiz) to combat different kinds of mental or physical illness, Shaikh Fariduddin’s advice to Nizamuddin was to not turn anyone away. The simple formulae for the amulets to cure illnesses were to inscribe Allah-o Shaafi, Allah-o Kaafi, Allah-o Ma‘afi. If amulets and relics worked, Sufis would get the credit; if not, God was supposed to have planned otherwise. Complete and graceful submission to the will of God was the recommended ideal.
In the most aesthetically sophisticated forms developed through centuries of practice, Sufism teaches the virtues of tolerance and peace. For, after all, the Sufis sought to preach what they practised – love for God and respect and service to humanity. Enduring pain, cultivating grace and guarding himself against any evil, Hazrat Nizamuddin prayed to be counted amongst the best of the people, saintly exemplars of the larger Muslim world.

‘Was like Draupadi’s cheerharan scene’: Yogi slams Opp for defeat of Constitutional Bill in Lok Sabha
Maulshree Seth
Apr 20, 2026
Likening the Opposition leaders’ behaviour in Parliament during the debate on the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill on Thursday to the “cheerharan” (disrobing) of Draupadi in the Mahabharat, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday targeted the INDIA bloc, particularly the Samajwadi Party, over the defeat of the Bill that sought to implement the women quota post the delimitation of the constituencies.
“The scene that played out in the House. How the INDIA bloc — the Congress, Samajwadi Party, TMC, and DMK acted draws our attention back to the scene of the ‘cheerharan’ (disrobing) of Draupadi in the full assembly. The nature of the remarks, especially the irresponsible comments made by the Opposition leaders, the behaviour (they displayed) is known to everyone,” Adityanath told mediapersons here.
Singling out the Samajwadi Party (SP) over its demand for a separate reservation for Muslim women, Adityanath said that attempts were being made to raise “irrelevant issues” about the legislation aimed at women’s empowerment.
“Yeh Samvidhan ki duhai dete hain, lekin Baba Saheb Ambedkar ki bhavnaon ke vipreet acharan karte hain (They invoke the Constitution, but act against the spirit of B R Ambedkar),” Adityanath said.
Referring to debates during the framing of the Constitution, the chief minister said religion-based reservation had been firmly rejected then. Adityanath argued that the women’s reservation Bill was a “progressive step” that did not take away anyone’s rights but sought to ensure greater participation of women in governance. “Yeh mahila sashaktikaran ke liye ek progressive soch ka kadam hai, ismein kisi ka haq nahi mara ja raha (This is a progressive step for women’s empowerment and does not take away anyone’s rights),” he said.
He further questioned the Opposition’s record on issues concerning Muslim women, citing the Shah Bano case and the triple talaq legislation.
The senior BJP leader said parties in the INDIA bloc, including the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, had had “ample opportunity” during their years in power to advance women’s rights but had failed to do so. He reiterated that the women’s reservation Bill should be seen as a unified effort to empower women rather than as an issue to be “fragmented for political gains”.
On Friday, the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, which sought to advance reservation of 33 per cent seats for women in an expanded Lok Sabha and state Assemblies and facilitate delimitation of the constituencies, failed to clear the House on Friday due to lack of two-thirds majority needed for its passage.
Defending the Bill, Adityanath said, “When some southern states raised the issue that rightful share might get reduced, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah gave assurance that in accordance with the framework established by the 2011 Census, the representation for the southern states would increase in exactly the same ratio as it does for the northern and eastern states,”
“There was only one wish that the entire House unite to pass the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam along with the amendment,” he added.
This was the first time a Bill under the Narendra Modi government was defeated in Parliament.

A woman was allegedly gang-raped by a Muslim cleric and his associate inside the premises of a mosque in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur. The purported incident took place on April 15.
The woman has claimed that she was brought to the mosque by the cleric's aide under the pretext of helping with her young child's falling health.
"He told me that there was a cleric who would treat my child so that his health would never deteriorate again. So I went there," she said.
The woman has claimed that she and her son were tricked into drinking water laced with sedatives by the cleric at the mosque. According to her, they both lost consciousness upon consuming the water.
The woman has alleged that the cleric and his aide raped her while she was unconscious and also filmed a video of the horrific act. She also said that the duo threatened to make the clip viral if she told anyone about their crime.
She has also accused the police of ignoring her complaint and pressuring her into silence. The woman later approached a senior official, who assured her of a thorough investigation and appropriate action.
Following the senior official's intervention, police arrested both accused, identified as Maulvi Junaid and Nadeem. According to reports, Nadeem is the cleric's neighbour.
During questioning, the accused revealed that after the woman lost consciousness, they took her to the cleric's room near the mosque, where they committed the heinous crime.

AIMIM chief Owaisi says Congress 'among those responsible' for Partition, denies BJP's 'Bengal B-team' charge
20 Apr 2026
The Congress was among those responsible for the 1947 Partition, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Sunday, adding that it was wrong to hold Muslims responsible for the split.
Addressing a rally in Gujarat's Limbayat, Owaisi cited Maulana Abul Kalam (country's first Education Minister) Azad’s book India Wins Freedom, saying Azad had appealed to Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru to prevent the division of the country.
"Muslims were not responsible for the partition. Is the Congress party not among those responsible for the partition? In his book India Wins Freedom, Maulana Azad writes that he went to Gandhi and Nehru and appealed to them not to let India be divided," he said.
Owaisi also criticised the Congress and the All India Trinamool Congress for calling the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) the BJP’s "B team" in West Bengal and objected to criticism over his party contesting 11 seats.
"Some allege that when Owaisi contests elections, the BJP benefits. In West Bengal, Congress is contesting 294 seats, TMC is contesting 294 seats, the Left Front is contesting 250 seats, and Owaisi's party is contesting 11 seats. BJP is also contesting 294 seats. They have a problem with me contesting the elections... Forget 11, win 270 seats and defeat the BJP... How long will you keep this society from forming its own leadership?" he said.
Owaisi projected AIMIM as a party capable of challenging the BJP within constitutional limits. "If anyone can stop the BJP and, within the bounds of the Constitution, look them in the eye and force them to accept our rights, then that party is the AIMIM... This is the time to stand up and assert your rights," he added.
Earlier, at a rally in Asansol, Owaisi targeted the TMC and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, holding them responsible for the BJP's rise in the state.
"If the BJP is strong in Bengal, then the TMC and Mamata Banerjee are responsible for that. The damage that the BJP and PM Narendra Modi do to India's Constitution and Muslims, especially the poor, is equally done by the TMC," he alleged.
He further accused the state government of neglecting minority-dominated areas. "In those blocks of Bengal where there are a large number of Muslims, there are no schools, no hospitals, and if there is a hospital, there are no beds; if there are beds, there are no doctors. In those areas, people don't even have access to clean water, and farmers aren't given any help... Here, women are facing the biggest problems," Owaisi claimed.

‘Monumental setback’ for Modi's foreign policy’: Congress on Pakistan's role in US-Iran
20.04.26
The Congress on Monday took a swipe at the Modi government over Pakistan's role in the US-Iran peace talks, saying Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir becoming a "huge favourite" of American President Donald Trump is a "monumental setback" for India which needs a complete overhaul of its diplomatic engagement strategy.
The opposition party claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "simply incapable" of the overhaul of India's diplomatic engagement strategy that is needed.
In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "The 'dalal' country, as the erudite and always nattily dressed External Affairs Minister described it, is reportedly hosting the second round of US-Iran peace talks today."
After the completion of the first round of these talks on April 12th, Pakistan borrowed USD 6 billion from Saudi Arabia and Qatar to repay a USD 3.5 billion loan taken from the UAE and to retire a USD 1.43 billion tranche of Eurobonds, he pointed out.
Pakistan's economy is clearly in dire straits and it depends on largesse given to it by friendly countries, Ramesh said.
"But it is for now playing a pivotal diplomatic role after having given sanctuary to Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists, bombing drug rehabilitation centres in Afghanistan, and most recently orchestrating the Pahalgam terror attack a year ago," the Congress leader said.
It is abundantly clear that the substance and style of Prime Minister Modi's regional and global engagement and narrative management have failed to isolate Pakistan which has received a whole new branding -- different from what Dr. Manmohan Singh had been able to achieve after the terror attacks in Mumbai in November 2008, Ramesh said.
"That Field Marshal Asim Munir -- whose provocative and inflammatory remarks provided the oxygen for the Pahalgam terror attack -- has become such a huge favourite of President Trump is a particularly severe setback for India," the Congress leader said.
"That the Field Marshal and his colleagues seem to have succeeded in managing the Trump ecosystem of family and associates much better than India is obvious. It is a monumental setback for Mr. Modi's foreign policy," Ramesh said.
"India needs a complete overhaul of its diplomatic engagement strategy and tactics - which Mr. Modi is simply incapable of doing," he said.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on April 11 said that he does not see India in competition with Pakistan regarding this issue and asserted that "who brings about the peace won't matter if peace comes".
Tharoor emphasised that if Pakistan emerges as a peacemaker in a specific context, it does not erase the evidence of its past misdeeds.
Tharoor also took a swipe at Pakistan over a social media post by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where he appealed for a two-week extension to allow diplomacy in the West Asia conflict. Shortly after it was published, users circulated screenshots of the post's edit history showing it initially carrying the line: "Draft — Pakistan's PM Message on X."
Referring to the post that had gone viral, Tharoor said, "Do you know what kind of relationship Pakistan has with Washington?"
"There have been allegations that Washington wrote that tweet for the Pakistani prime minister. If you and I wrote something for the Indian prime minister, would we write 'draft for India's PM' above it?" Tharoor told reporters in Delhi.
The post by Sharif resembled one that US President Donald Trump had used hours earlier, he said. "Only Pakistan can play the kind of role it has played with Washington," Tharoor said.
The US and Iran held rare direct talks in Pakistan on April 11 and 12 in Islamabad aimed at ending their conflict, but the talks concluded without any agreement.
Trump has announced a fresh round of talks, raising hopes of extending a two-week ceasefire that expires by Wednesday.
Trump has announced that American negotiators will be in Islamabad on Monday for peace talks with Iran.
However, there was no confirmation from the Iranian side about Tehran's participation in the second round of talks.

'False' allegations driven by office politics, jealousy: Kin of accused in TCS case
19.04.26
Professional rivalry and office politics were the driving forces behind the "false" sexual harassment and conversion allegations levelled against Tata Consulting Services (TCS) employee Raza Rafiq Memon, his family said here on Sunday, describing him as a "high performer".
Speaking to PTI, Memon's uncle Ayaz Kazi said the case was part of a coordinated "conspiracy" spurred by Memon's academic and professional performance.
Memon, currently in police custody till April 20, is among eight persons arrested after allegations of sexual harassment and pressure to convert emerged at a unit of TCS in Nashik.
He led the team that included both the complainant and prime accused Danish Shaikh.
Memon's family said the primary allegations are against Shaikh, and if he is guilty, then he must not be spared.
"However, the allegation against my nephew may be part of a coordinated conspiracy driven by academic and professional performance," Kazi said.
Memon hails from a humble background and topped an internal exam at the firm last year, which could have triggered jealousy among the other colleagues, the uncle said.
"He became a topper, and that didn't sit well with others in the company. This looks like a frame-up born out of office politics," he said.
Kazi described his nephew as "helpful," citing chats between the complainants and Memon that he said show he allowed them to leave early for their personal reasons.
Memon always obliged and would coordinate with the other team members, he said.
"As a team leader, his focus was strictly on sales targets and team productivity. There was no indication of any inappropriate interaction outside of these professional requests," he added.
Memon's family members also made claims of communal discrimination in the case against him. Kazi claimed that the people above Memon in the hierarchy were from different faiths, yet no action had been taken against them.
He said that Memon's inclusion in the matter is a "planned conspiracy" to derail the careers of high-performing employees.
A family member of another accused called him innocent. He has been "framed" because he used to hang out with Danish, the relative said. "He is a practising person and could not have done such a thing," the family member said.
A Special Investigation Team of Nashik police has arrested eight persons, including a female operations manager, by registering nine FIRs after allegations of exploitation, attempt of forceful conversion, hurting religious sentiments, molestation and mental harassment of female employees at the TCS unit came to light.
The Nashik police have formed three teams to trace another accused, Nida Khan. These teams have been dispatched to various places, and one of them landed in Mumbra near Thane, officials said.
Meanwhile, Khan has filed an anticipatory bail application before the Nashik sessions court, which will hear the plea on Monday.
Her lawyer has denied the charges against his client, saying she cannot be accused of outraging the modesty of another woman. Her plea also cited her two-month-old pregnancy as a ground for bail.
TCS has clarified that it has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form for a long time, and the employees allegedly involved in sexual harassment at the Nashik office have been suspended.
The company said on Friday that a preliminary review of the records indicated that it had not received any complaints "of the nature that are being alleged on either our ethics or POSH (prevention of sexual harassment) channels".
The country's largest IT services firm has also announced an oversight panel and engagement of external entities in its internal probe, it added.

LeT terrorist Umer Harris escaped India with fake passport; police unravel interstate terror module
19.04.26
Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Umer Harris, alias 'Khargosh' (rabbit), is believed to be in Saudi Arabia after managing to escape the country using a forged passport issued in the name of Sajjad, claiming to be a resident of Rajasthan, officials said on Sunday.
The Srinagar Police, which is spearheading the investigation into the inter-state LeT terror module, has shared details with central intelligence agencies, raising concerns about systemic loopholes that allow such abuse, they said.
While the case, registered by the Jammu and Kashmir Police earlier this month, is likely to be taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), details have been shared with the state police forces concerned to facilitate urgent action and plug the gaps, they said.
Contrary to earlier reports stating that Harris hailed from Karachi, it has emerged that he is from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. He joined the LeT to evade police prosecution as he had several arson cases pending against him in Karachi. He was later pushed by the terror group into Jammu and Kashmir in 2012.
Harris earned the alias 'Khargosh' as he could hop from place to place in no time, evading the security dragnet.
According to investigations and interrogations of the arrested accused, Harris, after infiltrating the Kashmir Valley from the northern side, stayed at various locations in Bandipora and Srinagar and married the daughter of an LeT Over Ground Worker (OGW). The Nikah ceremony was held in Jaipur under his assumed name, Sajjad.
Officials stated that the marriage documents were also used to support his application for an Indian passport.
The unravelling of this inter-state terror module by the Srinagar Police has exposed several loopholes. Questions are being raised about how a passport was issued by authorities in Rajasthan despite the police verification system in place.
The LeT terrorist managed to flee to Indonesia, from where he is believed to have used another forged travel document to station himself somewhere in Saudi Arabia in 2024–25, the officials said.
They said efforts are being made through diplomatic channels to bring him back to India and seek his deportation from the Gulf country.
These details emerged after the Srinagar Police busted a "deep-rooted" inter-state LeT module and arrested five people, including a Pakistani terrorist, Abdullah alias Abu Hureira, who had been on the run for 16 years and had successfully established bases outside the Union Territory.
The arrest of Abdullah, along with another Pakistani national, Usman alias Khubaib, was another major success for the Srinagar Police, coming six months after the dismantling of a "white-collar" terror cell centred at Faridabad's Al Falah University.
During interrogation, Abdullah informed his captors about his and Harris' movements across India, particularly in Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab.
This included the marriage ceremony, following which the bride's father was detained as he was well aware of the Pakistani terrorist's true identity, the officials said.
The operation in Srinagar, which began on March 31 and was monitored by Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat who camped in the city during that period, has unveiled the funding and financial pattern of the LeT, they said.
The terrorists used forged documents and identities to create a network not just in Jammu and Kashmir, but in several other states, they added.
Three Srinagar residents, identified as Mohammad Naqeeb Bhat, Adil Rashid Bha, and Ghulam Mohammad Mir alias Mama, were among the five arrested. They are accused of providing shelter, food and logistical support to the terrorists.
The elaborate network began to unravel on March 31 when the first of the three Srinagar residents, Naqeeb Bhat, was arrested from Pandach area along with a pistol and other incriminating material.
During his questioning, Bhat told police that he was a part of the LeT and procured the arms and ammunition from another associate, Adil Rashid of Zakoora, and also provided support to foreign terrorists, the officials said.
From Bhat, police were led to Mir and Rashid Bhat, both active associates of LeT in Srinagar and during the investigation, following disclosures from those arrested, various hideouts were also busted in forested areas in and around Srinagar.
The two Pakistani terrorists are categorised as 'A+' grade militants and the officials said they infiltrated India approximately 16 years ago and remained active across various districts of the Kashmir Valley, "commanding" around 40 foreign terrorists over the years, most of whom have since been neutralised, the officials said.
This busting of an interstate LeT module comes nearly six months after the 'Al Falah module' came to light in November 2025 after the Srinagar police probe unravelled a network comprising highly educated professionals, mostly doctors, who had been radicalised to carry out terrorist activities.
One of the accused was the Al Falah University's Dr Umer-un Nabi, who was driving the explosives-laden car that detonated outside the Red Fort on November 10, killing more than a dozen people.
He had earlier made unsuccessful attempts to join terror groups in 2016 and 2018, the officials said.

Lenskart apologises, releases new workplace style guide after religious symbol row leads to online backlash
19.04.26
Following massive online backlash over a purported internal grooming document, eyewear retailer Lenskart has issued a public apology and released a standardised 'In-Store Style Guide' that allows employees to wear religious and cultural symbols at work.
The issue surfaced earlier this week after a document, claimed to outline Lenskart’s employee grooming rules, spread widely across social media platforms. Several users alleged that the guidelines discouraged staff from wearing certain religious symbols, especially the bindi and tilak. The claims quickly triggered criticism online, with many people expressing anger and some calling for a boycott of the eyewear brand.
In a statement on X, the company said it is making its guidelines public and transparent to address the concerns of its customers and community.
The new policy "explicitly and unambiguously" welcomes all symbols of faith carried by team members, including the bindi, tilak, sindoor, kalawa, mangalsutra, kada, hijab, and turban.
"If any version of our workplace communication caused hurt or made any of our team members feel that their faith was unwelcome here, we are deeply sorry. That is not who Lenskart is, and it is not who we will ever be," the company said.
Addressing the uproar a few days ago, Lenskart founder Peyush Bansal had stepped in to clarify that the viral document was an "outdated version" and did not reflect the company's current stance.
"I want to speak directly that this document does not reflect our present guidelines. Our policy has no restrictions on any form of religious expression, including bindi and tilak," Bansal had stated, apologising for the confusion and concern the situation had caused.
Building on Bansal's earlier clarification, Lenskart's latest statement emphasised the company's homegrown roots, noting that its 2,400-plus stores are run by people who bring their beliefs and traditions to work every day.
"Lenskart was built in Bharat, by Indians, for Indians... That is not something we will ever ask anyone to leave at the door," the statement read.
The retailer has now committed to ensuring that every future policy, training material, and communication carrying the Lenskart name will reflect inclusive values.
"We will do better. And we will keep earning your trust," the company said.

Iran accuses US of ceasefire breach, vows retaliation over attack on ship
April 19, 2026
TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: Iran’s top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, accused the US of violating a ceasefire by firing at one of Iran’s commercial ships in the Gulf of Oman, vowing to retaliate.
State media quoted a Khatam Al-Anbiya spokesperson as saying early on Monday that the vessel was en route from China to Iran.
“We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy by the US military,” the spokesperson said.
US President Donald Trump earlier announced that a US destroyer ship fired on and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship as it tried to evade a US naval blockade.
Trump posted on Truth Social that after the Iranian vessel, Touska, ignored warnings to stop, the guided missile destroyer USS Spruance “stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom.”
“Right now, US Marines have custody of the vessel,” the US president added, “and are seeing what’s on board!“
The incident comes with tensions high in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, which has been virtually closed since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran seven weeks ago.
Iran briefly reopened the strait on Friday in recognition of an Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire in Lebanon, but closed it again the following day in response to the US maintaining its blockade on ships traveling to and from Iranian ports.
Trump said the Touska is under US Treasury sanctions “because of prior history of illegal activity.”
The Touska is listed on the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control website as an Iranian-flagged container under US sanctions.
Tankers reported turned back at Hormuz Strait
In a post on X, the US Central Command, or CENTCOM, said the US Navy's guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance repeatedly warned the Touska, which was enroute to Bandar Abbas, Iran, to turn back as it was violating the US blockade.
"After Touska’s crew failed to comply with repeated warnings over a six-hour period, Spruance directed the vessel to evacuate its engine room" before firing its 5-inch MK 45 Gun to disable the ship's engine.
It was the first such interception since the blockade of Iranian ports began last week.
Since the blockade’s commencement, US forces have directed 25 commercial vessels to turn around or return to an Iranian port, the post added.
Two liquefied petroleum gas tankers attempted to transit the Strait on Saturday morning but made a U-turn after reaching waters south of Larak Island, MarineTraffic vessel tracking data showed. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the vessels were turned back by Iran’s armed forces. One of the tankers – the Angola-flagged LPG tanker G Summer — later exited the Gulf on a second attempt on Saturday evening, signaling “China owner,” according to the data.
Friday’s announcement that the strait would reopen caused the sharpest one-day drop in oil prices in years and boosted stock markets to all-time highs.
Amrita Sen, founder of the Energy Aspects think tank, predicted oil prices would rise on Monday when traders returned to their desks having realized they might have been overly optimistic.
“Events over the weekend with Iran firing on merchant vessels and shutting the strait again highlight just how precarious the situation is,” Sen said. Pressure for a way out of the war has mounted on Trump as his fellow Republicans prepare to defend narrow majorities in Congress in the November midterm elections, with US gasoline prices high, inflation rising and his own approval ratings down.

Hezbollah claims attack destroyed Israeli tanks
April 20, 2026
Hezbollah said it detonated explosives Sunday afternoon in an attack against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
The group said in a statement Monday that bombs planted by Hezbollah fighters exploded and destroyed four tanks in a convoy of eight tanks that was passing the village of Deir Siryan.
It was the first claim of an attack by Hezbollah since a 10-day ceasefire went into effect at midnight Thursday.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment.
The Israeli army earlier said it carried out a series of strikes that killed more than 150 Hezbollah fighters.
Among those killed was Ali Rida Abbas, which it said was Hezbollah’s commander in Bint Jbeil.
The southern Lebanese town and its surroundings were the site of intense clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah militants in the days leading up to the ceasefire.
Israel gave no evidence to support its claims, and Hezbollah didn't immediately confirm the death of its commander.

UNIFIL chief leads tribute to slain French peacekeeper in Beirut
April 20, 2026
BEIRUT: The head of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon on Monday led a solemn tribute to a French soldier killed in a shooting incident in the country’s south, praising his “service and sacrifice” and urging an investigation into the attack.
Major General Diodato Abagnara, commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), honored Sergeant-Chef Florian Montorio during a ceremony at Beirut airport before his body was repatriated to France.
“We are here to honor you,” Abagnara said in remarks addressed to the fallen peacekeeper, adding that his service “lives on” through fellow soldiers and peacekeepers.
Montorio, 39, was killed on Sunday when a UNIFIL patrol clearing explosive ordnance came under small-arms fire near Ghanduriyah in south Lebanon. Three other peacekeepers were wounded, two of them seriously.
UNIFIL said the patrol had been working to re-establish access to isolated positions when it was targeted by what it described as non-state actors, with the group Hezbollah alleged to be involved. The mission has launched an internal investigation and called on Lebanese authorities to swiftly identify and prosecute those responsible.
The ceremony in Beirut was attended by senior UN and French officials, including French ambassador Hervé Magro and UNIFIL Chief of Staff Major General Paul Sanzey, who praised the soldier as embodying France’s longstanding commitment to the mission.
France has been a key contributor to UNIFIL since its establishment in 1978, deploying troops to conduct patrols, demining operations and support Lebanon’s armed forces in the country’s volatile south.
Montorio was posthumously awarded UN and Lebanese Army medals in recognition of his service. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
French President Emmanuel Macron will on Tuesday meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in Paris, his office announced.
UNIFIL, created to monitor hostilities and support stability in southern Lebanon, operates in a region that has seen periodic flare-ups between Israel and Hezbollah, including cross-border exchanges of fire in recent years.
The latest incident underscores the risks faced by peacekeepers deployed in southern Lebanon, where tensions remain high despite a relative lull in large-scale conflict.

Iran executes two men convicted of links to Israel’s spy agency
April 20, 2026
TEHRAN: Iran executed two men on Monday convicted of having links to Israel’s spy agency, the judiciary said, the latest in a string of executions since the outbreak of war with Israel and the United States.
“The death sentences of Mohammad Masoom-shahi and Hamed Validi were carried out at dawn today,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website reported.
It said the two men were “members of a spy network linked to Mossad,” Israel’s intelligence agency, but did not say when they were arrested.
They were convicted of the capital offense of “moharebeh,” meaning waging war against God, as well as “collaboration with hostile groups and the Zionist regime,” Mizan said.
Iran has carried out multiple executions since the start of war with the United States and Israel on February 28. A fragile two-week ceasefire has been in place since April 8.
Iran is the world’s second most prolific executioner after China, according to rights groups based outside the country.

Syria-Iraq forces seize 500,000 captagon pills in Damascus
April 19, 2026
LONDON: The Syrian Arab Republic’s Anti-Narcotics Department, in collaboration with Iraq’s General Directorate for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, thwarted an attempt to smuggle 500,000 captagon pills on Sunday.
Authorities arrested two suspects while they were transporting the shipment in Damascus, intended for trafficking out of the country, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said the operation was part of a broader national strategy to combat drug trafficking and enhance cross-border cooperation in addressing organized crime, according to SANA.
Early in April, Syrian and Iraqi anti-narcotics authorities seized around 1 million captagon pills.
Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, anti-narcotics authorities in Syria and Iraq have increasingly been conducting joint operations to crack down on cross-border criminal networks.
Under the former president, Bashar Assad, Syria became a hub for the production and distribution of illegal drugs, while the government largely ignored the concerns of neighboring countries about the negative effects this was having on the region.

Israel says image of soldier striking Jesus statue in Lebanon is authentic
April 19, 2026
JERUSALEM: The Israeli army said Monday that it had determined an image circulating on social media that shows a soldier in south Lebanon hitting a statue of Jesus Christ is authentic and depicts one of its troops.
The image appears to show an Israeli soldier using a sledgehammer to strike the head of a statue of a crucified Jesus that had fallen off of a cross.
Arab media reports indicated that the statue was in the Christian village of Debl in south Lebanon, near the border with Israel.
The Debl municipality told AFP that the statue was located in the village, but could not confirm whether it had been damaged.
The Israel army said it viewed the incident with “great severity,” adding that the “soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops,” in a post to its official X account on Monday.
“Following the completion of an initial examination regarding a photograph published earlier today of an IDF soldier harming a Christian symbol, it was determined that the photograph depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon,” it said in the post.
The incident is being investigated by the Northern Command and is currently being “addressed through the chain of command,” the military added.
It said that “appropriate measures will be taken against those involved” but did not go into further detail.
The Israel army said that it is working with the community to “restore the statue to its place.”
Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war in early March when Tehran-backed Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel in support of Iran.
Israel responded with massive strikes across the country and an invasion of the south.
Israeli troops have remained in the area despite a ceasefire between the two countries that entered into force on Friday.

Civil defense urges caution as thunderstorms sweep Kingdom through Friday
April 20, 2026
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defense has called on residents to remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas as thunderstorms are forecast to continue affecting much of the Kingdom through Friday, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Citing projections from the National Center for Meteorology, authorities warned that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across multiple regions, including Makkah, Riyadh, Madinah, Qassim, Hail, Tabuk, the Eastern Region, Northern Borders, Al-Jouf, Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran.
The weather conditions may trigger flash floods, hailstorms, and strong downdrafts capable of generating dust and sandstorms that reduce visibility.
In response to the severe weather, Hafar Al-Batin University announced the suspension of in-person classes on Monday, shifting to remote learning across its colleges and in the governorates of Khafji and Al-Nairyah, following meteorological advisories.
The Civil Defense emphasized the need to stay in safe locations, avoid flood-prone places, and refrain from swimming in affected areas, while closely following official updates through media and social platforms.
The warnings come amid a series of escalating weather alerts over the weekend. On Sunday, the meteorology center issued a red alert for the Madinah Region, forecasting intense rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, hail, and near-zero visibility conditions. Similar patterns were observed across other regions, with widespread rain and dust-stirring winds reported.
Forecasts carried by SPA over the past two days highlighted a progression of unstable weather, beginning Saturday with moderate to heavy rain in northern and western regions and intensifying Sunday to include central and eastern areas. Marine conditions in both the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf remained relatively calm, despite fluctuating wind speeds.
Authorities continue to monitor developments closely, urging the public to prioritize safety as unstable weather conditions persist across the Kingdom.

Transport minister highlights seamless Hajj travel as Makkah Route flights arrive
April 19, 2026
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser visited the dedicated terminal for the Makkah Route initiative at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, where he welcomed a flight of beneficiaries arriving from Bangladesh.
The minister was briefed on procedures implemented to facilitate pilgrims’ journeys, reduce processing times, and deliver high-quality services that enable them to perform their rituals with ease and comfort.
Al-Jasser said the transport and logistics system operates under an integrated strategy that uses modern technologies and artificial intelligence to deliver high-quality services.
He noted that these efforts reflect the leadership’s care for the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors and support the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.
The first flight carrying beneficiaries of the Makkah Route initiative arrived from Istanbul International Airport in Turkiye to the Kingdom via the initiative’s terminal at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah.
Another flight carrying beneficiaries of the Makkah Route departed from Allama Iqbal International Airport in Pakistan and arrived at Madinah airport.
The General Directorate of Passports at Madinah airport also received the first flight of pilgrims arriving from Afghanistan.
The directorate affirmed its full readiness to facilitate entry procedures at all air, land, and sea ports by deploying advanced technological capabilities and multilingual qualified personnel to ensure smooth and efficient services throughout the Hajj season.
The Makkah Route initiative aims to provide streamlined and efficient services to pilgrims by completing their procedures in their home countries.
The countries benefiting from the initiative are Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkiye, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Maldives, as well as, for the first time, Senegal and Brunei Darussalam.
Services include collecting biometric data, issuing Hajj visas electronically, and completing passport procedures at departure airports after verifying health requirements.
The initiative also ensures baggage is tagged and sorted in accordance with transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom.
Upon arrival, pilgrims are transported directly via dedicated routes to their accommodations in the Makkah and Madinah regions, while partner entities handle baggage delivery.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism welcomed the first groups of pilgrims arriving in Makkah and Madinah, organizing reception events that reflected Saudi hospitality and contributed to an efficient arrival experience.
The ministry said these efforts are part of an integrated government approach to ensure a smooth and safe Hajj journey from arrival through departure.
It reaffirmed its commitment to coordinating with relevant entities and the private sector to improve accommodation services across hotels and other hospitality facilities, with a focus on efficiency and comfort.
The ministry stressed that it would enforce compliance with regulations, noting that inspection teams would intensify field visits to monitor service quality and address violations.
Pilgrims are encouraged to contact the Unified Tourism Center (930) for inquiries, feedback, or complaints.

Saudi Arabia, other countries welcome Libya’s unified budget agreement
April 19, 2026
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and several other countries have welcomed the signing of a unified 2026 budget for Libya, the first Libyan national budget in over a decade.
The signing, on April 11, is a critical step to increase economic coordination between western and eastern Libyan leaders, a joint statement released on Sunday by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the US, Turkiye, the UAE, the UK, Egypt, France, Germany, and Italy said.
“We applaud their constructive approach to reach this agreement, which has the potential to foster increased unity, stability, and prosperity for Libya,” the countries said.
“Full implementation of the unified budget will help advance Libya’s financial stability, defend the value of the dinar and the Libyan people’s purchasing power, enable the implementation of development projects and international investment across Libya, and strengthen Libya’s vital technocratic institutions, including the Central Bank of Libya, National Oil Corporation, and Libyan Audit Bureau.
“The unified budget includes the National Oil Corporation’s first operational budget in years and financing to increase energy production, as well as oversight provisions to ensure these funds are used effectively.” they added.
The statement said increased oil and gas production will drive greater prosperity for the Libyan people and their international partners and contribute to regional and global energy security.
They reaffirmed their support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the roadmap developed by UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General Hanna Tetteh.
The countries urged all stakeholders to use this roadmap and UNSMIL facilitation to advance a Libyan-led political process leading to unified governance and national elections.
“Increased economic integration will complement and strengthen the political process. A strong and prosperous Libya with unified economic, military, and political institutions is in all of our interests,” they said.

New Saudization targets for marketing and sales roles come into effect
HAJAR ALQUSAYER
April 19, 2026
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia began on Sunday implementing higher Saudization rates for marketing and sales professions, as part of efforts to increase the participation of nationals in the private sector.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development said the measures raise localization rates in both sectors to 60 percent following the end of a grace period for private sector establishments, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The decision applies to companies employing three or more workers in the targeted roles, the ministry said. A minimum monthly salary of SR5,500 ($1,466) has also been set for Saudi employees to be counted toward Saudization rates in marketing professions.
Marketing roles covered include marketing manager, advertising manager, advertising agent, graphic designer, advertising designer, public relations specialist, marketing specialist, public relations manager and photographer.
Sales roles include sales manager, retail and wholesale sales representative, sales representative, information and communications technology sales specialist, commercial specialist and commodity broker.
Speaking to Arab News, Fahad Al-Kastaban, human resources advisor, said the move represents “an important regulatory step” expected to enhance the participation of national talent in one of the most dynamic and fast-growing sectors.
He added that the decision is also expected to expand job opportunities for Saudi men and women, particularly with the introduction of a minimum wage, which “helps improve job quality and reduce inefficient employment.”
Al-Kastaban noted that “the most prominent challenges include the limited availability of qualified talent for some specialized roles, high turnover rates in the marketing and sales sector and operational cost pressures.”
He said these challenges can be addressed through “investment in training and upskilling, improving the work environment, and building clear career pathways that enhance job stability,” alongside leveraging support programs offered by the ministry.
Al-Kastaban emphasized that achieving the intended impact will depend on the quality of implementation, including developing skills, improving the work environment and building clear career pathways that ensure sustainability.
“In doing so, the impact of the decision will go beyond merely raising localization rates, contributing meaningfully to improving labor market efficiency and advancing the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in a sustainable way,” he said.
The ministry said it has published procedural guidelines on its website detailing the targeted roles, implementation mechanisms, and how localization rates will be calculated, along with penalties for non-compliance.
Over recent years, Saudi Arabia has expanded Saudization requirements across a range of sectors as part of broader labor market reforms under Vision 2030.
According to statistics released by the ministry in December 2025, more than 2.48 million Saudis have entered the private sector since 2020.
The data also showed that the overall labor force participation rate reached 68.2 percent in the first quarter of 2025, while Saudi participation rose to 51.3 percent.
During the same period, the Human Resources Development Fund supported about 143,000 Saudis into private sector jobs, with SR1.83 billion allocated to training and employment programs.

Makkah museum spotlights historic Qur’an art
April 19, 2026
MAKKAH: The Holy Qur’an Museum at the Hira Cultural District in Makkah is showcasing a rare 19th-century Qur’an manuscript from India, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The manuscript features a compact, octagonal design that combines portability with artistic precision and innovation.
The exhibit supports the museum’s mission to educate visitors about the history and evolution of Qur’anic calligraphy, while enhancing the district’s cultural and tourism appeal and reinforcing Makkah’s global significance.
The museum also displays a replica of the Holy Kaaba’s door, highlighting the fusion of artistic beauty and spiritual meaning in Islamic civilization.
The replica features Qur’anic verses in Arabic calligraphy with intricate Islamic decoration in a distinctive style.
The original door dates to the reign of King Khalid bin Abdulaziz. It features fine details and rich engravings, including Qur’anic verses that reflect the sanctity of the Holy Kaaba.
The engraved verses are arranged in a balanced composition, showcasing precise design, skilled craftsmanship, and surrounding floral and geometric motifs.
The museum also houses a rare mosaic depicting the opening verses of the Holy Qur’an. This artwork blends elegant Arabic calligraphy with the richness of Islamic decorative arts.
Dating to the 17th century, the mosaic reflects exceptional craftsmanship and a long tradition of expressing the Qur’an through diverse artistic forms.
The original manuscript is preserved at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Endowment Libraries, a leading institution dedicated to safeguarding rare Islamic manuscripts.
The museum is attracting growing numbers of visitors with its educational content and innovative displays, reinforcing Makkah’s role as a center of Islamic culture.
The Hira Cultural District is located next to Jabal Hira, home to Hira Cave where revelation descended on Prophet Muhammad, giving it deep religious and historical significance.
The district includes several key facilities, most notably the Holy Qur’an Museum, which presents the history of the Qur’an’s compilation and development, along with interactive exhibits on Arabic calligraphy and Islamic arts.

Five questions awaiting Starmer as he faces Commons over Mandelson scandal
Apr 19, 2026
Jennifer McKiernan
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to face a packed Commons later where he will address questions over Lord Mandelson's vetting.
Sir Keir repeatedly told MPs that "full due process" was followed when Lord Mandelson was appointed as US ambassador in December 2024.
The prime minister said he was "staggered" to find out last week that civil servants in the Foreign Office withheld information from him about red flags in the initial vetting process.
Amid calls for him to resign from every opposition leader, Sir Keir pledged "true transparency" as he tried to set out what happened. Here are the main questions he needs to answer.
1. What did Starmer know and when?
Sir Keir told reporters that the first he knew about the red flags was on Tuesday last week, despite them being initially raised to the Foreign Office by UK Security and Vetting (UKSV) officials in January last year.
He said the information was passed on to him by Dame Antonia Romeo, the head of the civil service, and Cat Little, the head of the Cabinet Office, who had received it two weeks prior.
The documents had been revealed after the Conservatives tabled a motion which demanded the publication of all paperwork relating to the vetting process.
The prime minister's head of press, Tim Allan, was contacted by the political editor of the Independent in September, with the paper publishing a story about Mandelson failing vetting later that month.
The prime minister has insisted that his former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, and staff in Number 10 also did not know about the UKSV warnings.
McSweeney quit his job over the Mandelson scandal in February.
However, opposition MPs say it is not credible that neither Sir Keir, nor anyone on his team, could have remained in the dark for more than a year.
2. Why did Starmer and his team not ask for more information?
Sir Keir moved to replace the previous US ambassador Karen Pierce, a civil servant, with Lord Mandelson when US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January last year.
As a political appointee, critics say the risk of Lord Mandelson's appointment was higher than a career civil servant, so Sir Keir and Number 10 should have taken more care to ensure the vetting process was followed correctly.
Lord Mandelson's friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein was public knowledge well before his appointment, as were previous scandals around money and influence that led to him being forced out of Cabinet twice.
Yet it seems the first person to request the UKSV summary form was Dame Antonia, shortly after her appointment in February.
3. Did Starmer mislead Parliament?
Sir Keir told MPs in September, a day before Lord Mandelson was sacked as US ambassador, that "full due process" had been followed during his appointment.
The Conservatives say Sir Keir misled the Commons and had therefore broken the ministerial code. The prime minister denies this, saying he had only been told about the vetting recommendation last Tuesday.
Under the code, the minister in question should correct the record in Parliament "at the earliest opportunity". Opposition party leaders say Sir Keir should have done this at PMQs last week, the day after he said he found out about the red flags.
Sir Keir told journalists that having found out the information on vetting last Tuesday, he asked his civil servants to provide full details so he could ensure accuracy when he returned to the Commons to answer questions from MPs on Monday.
There are sure to be questions about this six-day delay, although we know the prime minister was in Paris on Thursday for a pre-scheduled meeting of global leaders on the Iran war, and the next parliamentary sitting was Monday.
The documents also need to be inspected by the Intelligence and Security Committee of cross-party MPs, which is trying to balance allowing as much information as possible into the public domain without compromising national security.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has demanded the papers be released by the end of the week.
In November, the then head of the civil service, Sir Chris Wormald, said Lord Mandelson was not formally interviewed for the role of US ambassador.
Sir Chris said Lord Mandelson was not directly asked in person about any conflict of interest, but instead needed to fill in a form aimed more at potential financial conflicts. This process has now been changed.
Details of the due diligence checks made before Lord Mandelson's appointment, which were carried out by the Cabinet Office on behalf of Number 10, are still to emerge. The publication of these checks were specifically demanded by the Liberal Democrats on Sunday.
However, Sir Chris told MPs in November that the document did contain an "initial assessment" of mitigations around potential professional or financial relationships and noted the inclusion of "a general reputational risk" linked to Epstein.
5. Will Starmer face further pressure after Monday's Commons appearance?
This scandal has dragged on for months and has so far cost Sir Keir his US ambassador, his chief of staff, and the head of the Foreign Office, Sir Olly Robbins, who was ousted on Thursday.
Sir Olly will appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday to give evidence on how Lord Mandelson's clearance was handled.
The committee chair, Dame Emily Thornberry, said she felt she had been "misled" by Sir Olly when he first appeared at the committee in November last year.
He will be expected to explain whether red flags about Lord Mandelson's appointment were ignored, and if so who by and why.
He is also expected to be asked whether Foreign Office staff were leaned on in any way by Number 10.
And then there is the question of whether Labour backbenchers, returning from a week on the campaign trail for local elections, will rally behind their leader.
The remaining documents linked to Lord Mandelson's vetting will be released at some point in the next few weeks, and the possibility of a criminal trial remains.

Attempted murder arrest after car hits pedestrians
Apr 20, 2026
Tom Symonds
A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car hit pedestrians in central London in the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving one woman in a critical condition.
The Met Police said the 30-year-old woman was taken to hospital after emergency services were called to Argyll Street at about 04:30 BST. A man in his 50s sustained life-changing injuries, and was taken to hospital.
The driver of the car - a 29-year-old woman - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm (GBH), dangerous driving and drink driving.
Police say the incident, which took place on a Soho street that is home to the London Palladium theatre, is not being treated as terrorism-related.
A third woman, aged in her 30s, was treated for minor injuries.
Video filmed by witnesses and posted on social media, showed a fight between several women in the street at the location of the incident.
During the incident, one woman got into a car which then moved forward and hit another woman, standing on the pavement.
A man standing nearby with a bike also appeared to have been hit by the vehicle.
Det Ch Insp Alison Foxwell has called for witnesses to come forward.
She said: "As our enquiries continue, our thoughts are with those injured and their loved ones.
"While this incident took place in the early hours of the morning, venues in the area were still open, and we believe a number of people will have seen what happened.
"I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or any activity prior to it that they feel may be of relevance, to come forward.
"The information you have - however minor you believe it may be - could be of crucial importance to investigators."

Ukraine police chief resigns after officers allegedly fled deadly shooting
Kathryn Armstrong
Apr 20, 2026
The head of Ukraine's patrol police, Yevhen Zhukov, has resigned after two of his officers faced criticism for allegedly fleeing a deadly mass shooting in the capital, Kyiv.
Six people died and 14 others were injured on Saturday after a man opened fire on people in the street in Kyiv's southern Holosiivskyi district before taking others hostage in a nearby supermarket. He was later killed in a shoot-out with police.
Footage has since been shared online appearing to show officers leaving civilians and running away from the scene.
Ukraine's Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said the officers in question had been suspended and that an investigation into their actions was under way.
"'Serve and protect' is not just a slogan. It must be supported by appropriate professional actions. Especially at critical moments, when people's lives depend on it," he wrote on Telegram.
However, Klymenko cautioned: "It is not entirely correct to make generalisations about the entire police only by the actions of two employees."
Zhukov told a news conference on Sunday that the officers had "failed to assess the situation properly and left civilians in danger". He also said they acted "unprofessionally and unworthily".
"As a combat officer, I have decided to submit my resignation from the position I currently hold," Zhukov said.
The Ukrainian authorities say they are treating Saturday' shooting as a terrorist act but have not yet spoken about a motive. Klymenko described the man's mental state as "clearly unstable".
Eight people remain in hospital, of whom one adult was in an "extremely serious condition" and three were in a serious condition, officials said.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an update on Sunday that the two officers had been "at the scene of the crime, but did not stop the murderer, and fled on their own".
He accused them of "inaction" and said a criminal case into the matter - which will also check their previous work - was being handled by Ukraine's national investigations bureau.
"We are going through a war and every day, unfortunately, there are human losses from Russian strikes," Zelensky said. "It is especially painful to lose people like this, in an ordinary city, just on the street."
More details are beginning to emerge about the victims of the attack.
One man was the father of a child who was injured in the attack, Kravchenko said. Another of those who died was thought to be the boy's aunt.
The shooter has been identified as a 58-year-old man who was originally from the Russian capital, Moscow, but who had been living in the Holosiivskyi district in the lead-up to the shooting.
Prior to this, he had lived in the eastern Donetsk region - which is largely under Russian occupation and was subject to a separatist conflict prior to Moscow's full-scale invasion - Ukrainian officials said.
The gun he used was officially registered, according to officials. They are now investigating how he obtained the necessary documents to renew his licence.
While Kyiv is often subject to attacks during the ongoing war with Russia, shootings of this kind are rare in the city.
Klymenko said there would not be a mass check of gun owners following the shooting.
"I believe that people should have the right to armed self-defence," he added. "Especially after the experience when, at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, civilians received weapons for national resistance."
Ukrainian citizens are permitted to own non-automatic firearms provided they meet licence conditions, such as not having a criminal record or history of mental illness.
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukrainians have been able to carry weapons for self-defence and to defend their country.
A 2023 small arms survey suggested that only around 3.4% of Ukrainian adults owned their own gun.

French peacekeeper killed in southern Lebanon
Apr 20, 2026
Samantha Granville
A French peacekeeper has been killed and three others wounded after a UN patrol came under fire in southern Lebanon, in what officials described as a deliberate attack.
The soldier was serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), which confirmed that one peacekeeper had died and three others were injured, two of them seriously, when their patrol came under small-arms fire.
French President Emmanuel Macron blamed the attack on Hezbollah. The Iran-backed armed group denied "any connection" to the incident.
It comes amid heightened tensions in southern Lebanon, where peacekeepers have faced growing risks since renewed fighting between Hezbollah and Israel erupted on 2 March.
On Sunday, Unifil confirmed the French peacekeeper's body would be repatriated to Paris.
Two severely injured peacekeepers were still receiving treatment in Beirut, while a third peacekeeper was being treated for "moderate injuries" in southern Lebanon, it added.
A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect on 16 April. The US, which announced the deal, urged Hezbollah to abide by its terms.
"Everything suggests that responsibility for this attack lies with Hezbollah," Macron said.
"France demands that the Lebanese authorities immediately arrest the perpetrators and take their responsibilities alongside Unifil."
France's Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin said the peacekeeper had been part of a mission to reopen access to a Unifil position that had been cut off by the recent fighting when it had been "ambushed by an armed group at very close range".
Vautrin added that he was "hit immediately by a direct shot from a small arms weapon" and was pulled away by fellow soldiers, who were unable to revive him.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary General António Guterres condemned the attack, adding that an initial assessment from Unifil suggested that the team came under fire from "non-state actors", which they presumed to be Hezbollah.
The spokesperson urges all parties to "respect the cessation of hostilities and to cease fire".
Unifil said the patrol had been clearing explosive ordnance along a road in the village of Ghanduriyah to reconnect isolated positions.
The Lebanese Armed Forces said the incident followed exchanges of fire with armed individuals, adding that it was co-ordinating closely with Unifil during what it described as a sensitive phase in southern Lebanon.
Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack and told Macron during a phone call that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has also ordered an investigation.
Hezbollah issued a statement on Saturday denying it was responsible, describing them as "rushed" and "baseless accusations".
It called for "caution in making judgements and assigning blame regarding the incident, pending the Lebanese army's investigation to determine the full circumstances".
The group urged both Unifil and the Lebanese army to continue co-ordinating with locals on manouevres "under these delicate circumstances".
In late March, three Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in separate incidents - an explosion that destroyed a Unifil vehicle and a projectile strike a day earlier.
Unifil warned that under international law "all actors" were obliged to ensure the "safety and security" of UN personnel, adding that "deliberate attacks" on peacekeepers were "grave violations" of international humanitarian law and could amount to war crimes.
The peacekeeping force was first established in 1978 by the UN Security Council following Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon, with a mandate to confirm Israeli withdrawal, restore peace and assist the Lebanese government in regaining authority in the south.
Its role was expanded after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, when Security Council Resolution 1701 strengthened its responsibilities in monitoring the ceasefire along the Blue Line - the de facto border between Lebanon and Israel - in co-ordination with the Lebanese army.
More than 330 peacekeepers have been killed since the mission was established.

EU will bankroll Ukraine regardless of Hungarian election outcome – Kremlin
20 Apr, 2026
The EU will find ways to hand out more money to Ukraine regardless of Hungary’s veto power, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. He made the remarks after the opposition Tisza party defeated Hungary’s longtime prime minister, Viktor Orban, in a high-stakes parliamentary election.
Orban previously blocked a $106 billion loan package for Ukraine. Tisza leader Peter Magyar, however, campaigned on repairing relations with the EU and signaled that Budapest will drop its opposition to aid for Kiev.
Ukraine’s European backers, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, openly celebrated Magyar’s victory.
In a news segment aired on Sunday, Russia 1 journalist Pavel Zarubin asked Peskov whether Russia-EU relations could deteriorate further following Orban’s defeat. “No, they can’t get any worse than now,” Peskov replied.
“One way or another, the EU would have found a way to unblock the funds, with or without Orban. We should have no illusions about it,” he added.
Since the conflict with Russia broke out in 2022, Kiev has received around $197 billion in financial and military aid from the EU.
A longstanding critic of the EU’s decision-making process, Orban has argued that military aid to Ukraine has pushed the bloc closer to an open war with Russia, while the ban on energy imports from Russia has hurt member states economically.
Von der Leyen has said the “momentum” from the Hungarian election should be used to begin reforms aimed at reducing the veto power of member states on issues such as loans for Ukraine. “Moving to qualified majority voting in foreign policy is an important way to avoid systemic blockages, as we have seen in the past,” she said.
In February, Hungary sued the EU over its decision to phase out energy supplies from Russia. Slovakia has said it will formally join the lawsuit this week. Both countries argue that the EU has no right to override their opposition to sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine conflict.

UK can’t find 95,000 reservists on call-up list – defense adviser
19 Apr, 2026
The UK has effectively lost contact with tens of thousands of reservists who would be called up in a national emergency, George Robertson, a former NATO secretary general and a lead adviser for the Strategic Defense Review (SDR), has said.
Amid the broader Western militarization over a perceived Russian threat – claims repeatedly dismissed by Moscow as “nonsense” – the UK rolled out its new SDR last November, outlining a shift to “warfighting readiness” by 2035. The plan calls for raising defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, and, among other things, revitalizing the strategic reserve.
An armed forces bill is now being prepared to implement the reforms, including raising the recall age from 55 to 65 and expanding call-up criteria to cover “warlike operations,” not just direct attacks or emergencies.
However, speaking at a lecture in Salisbury this week, Robertson said that the government does not have valid contact or health data for most of its roughly 95,000 “high-readiness” reservists.
“What the review talks about is having the strategic reserve... But the Ministry of Defense at the present moment doesn’t even know where most of them are,” he said, as cited by The Guardian. “So we need to sort of round up those who are available and fit and willing to be able to do it.”
The British Army is already at its smallest size in more than two centuries, with fewer than 70,000 fully trained personnel ready for frontline deployment, alongside an active reserve of around 32,000. The strategic reserve, meanwhile, consists of former service members, with regular contact typically maintained only for the first six years after they leave, leaving a larger, older cohort off the radar.
Robertson called for mapping reservists’ locations and skills and “mak[ing] a more concerted effort to engage them under a refreshed veterans’ communications strategy.” He also criticized delays in funding and preparedness, accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of “corrosive complacency” and putting the country “in peril” at a time it was “under attack.”
The UK, a key backer of Ukraine, has justified its role by claiming Russia could target Europe after the conflict. Starmer himself has repeatedly cited the alleged threat to push for higher defense spending, telling the Munich Security Conference in February that Europe “must be ready to deter aggression” and “fight” Russia “if necessary,” while claiming that Moscow would accelerate rearmament after any peace deal.
Russia has dismissed such claims, arguing they are used to justify higher military spending, distract from domestic issues, and stall peace efforts.

Moroccans rally in rabat against Israel death penalty law
April 20, 2026
Thousands of demonstrators marched in Rabat on Sunday, denouncing a new Israeli law that would allow the execution of Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks, while reaffirming support for the Palestinian cause.
An estimated 5,000 people gathered along Mohammed V Avenue in central Rabat, waving Palestinian and Moroccan flags and chanting slogans against the death penalty and Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
The march was organized by the National Action Group for Palestine, a coalition bringing together Islamist and left-wing groups, including members linked to the Justice and Development Party.
Voices of solidarity
Participants framed the protest as part of a broader popular movement supporting Palestinians.
“Protests and boycotts are the least we can do,” said one student marcher, emphasizing solidarity with detainees facing possible execution.
Others condemned the law as unjust and incompatible with religious and legal principles.
Controversial legislation
The new Israeli measure would make the death penalty the default sentence for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank found guilty of carrying out deadly attacks classified as terrorism by military courts.
It also broadens the use of capital punishment in civilian courts under specific conditions.
International criticism grows
The law has drawn condemnation from the Palestinian Authority, human rights groups, and several foreign governments.
Critics argue it risks creating a dual legal system and may conflict with Israel’s constitutional framework.
Renewed criticism of normalization
Demonstrators also targeted Morocco’s 2020 normalization of ties with Israel, calling for renewed pressure on Rabat to reconsider its diplomatic stance amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

NCA demands arrest of Islamic cleric over alleged bounty on pastor
April 19, 2026
The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of an Islamic cleric allegedly captured in a viral video placing a ₦2 million bounty on a pastor accused of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed.
The association warned that failure by security agencies to act swiftly could trigger reprisals and threaten public peace in northern Nigeria.
Chairman of the association, Joseph John Hayab, made the demand in a statement issued to journalists in Kaduna on Sunday.
Hayab described the development as a dangerous act of incitement capable of worsening religious tensions in the region.
He expressed concern that a religious leader, who should ordinarily promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence, was allegedly involved in actions capable of destabilising society.
The cleric noted that the association had consistently advocated peace, stressing that its commitment was for the collective good and not a sign of weakness.
He urged the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Hayab warned that failure to act decisively could embolden lawlessness and escalate tensions across communities.
He also called on Islamic leaders across the country to openly condemn the alleged action and distance themselves from any form of violence carried out in the name of religion.
According to him, silence from moderate voices could embolden extremism and deepen divisions within society.
The NCA chairman stressed that placing a bounty on an individual’s life undermines the rule of law and violates the sanctity of human life.
Citing Section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), he noted that every Nigerian has a guaranteed right to life, except in execution of a court sentence following lawful conviction.
“There is no monopoly of violence. The fact that we choose peace should not be taken for granted,” he said.
Hayab, however, urged restraint among all parties and advised citizens to channel grievances through lawful means rather than taking the law into their own hands, reaffirming the association’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and respect for fundamental human rights.

Can Atiku–Obi unseat Tinubu–Shettima in 2027?, by Yushau A. Shuaib
By Ibrahim Ramalan
April 19, 2026
Nigeria’s political landscape is gradually heating up ahead of the 2027 general elections. Yet, beyond permutations of power, recent personal encounters have exposed a deeper concern—how dangerously our national discourse is drifting toward divisive narratives of religion and ethnicity.
Recently, I confronted a disturbing social media post by a purported Northern Muslim denigrating Jesus over political provocation. As a devout Muslim, I condemned the post unequivocally. Such conduct is not only irresponsible but fundamentally contradicts Islamic teachings. The Holy Qur’an accords profound respect to Christians and Jews, and to their scriptures, while honouring Jesus as the Messiah and the Word of God.
In urging restraint, I appreciated the solidarity shown by members of the Christian community and reminded both faiths that they share far more in common than what divides them. Yet, within hours, another troubling episode emerged. A Nigerian-born commentator based in America, Ejike Okpa, posted Facebook content portraying Muslims as terrorists. As a friend, I simply responded: “I am a Muslim, not a terrorist.” The reactions and comments that followed, especially from those I often referred to as ‘Werekaci’ were unsettling and disgusting—and it raised a fundamental question: will religion and ethnicity shape the political choices of the next generation as we approach 2027?
It was against this backdrop that I joined the Editor of Economic Confidential, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, in the inaugural PRNigeria “Journalist vs PR Strategist” podcast debate on whether an emerging opposition coalition could unseat an incumbent administration. While my colleague is an avowed supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I deliberately adopted a balanced position—grounded in facts and objective analysis.
At the centre of current political calculations is the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is evolving into the most formidable opposition alliance, similar to a coalition that eventually produced the All-Progressives Congress (APC), with Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate. It was the coalition that ultimately unseated the then‑ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
The irony is striking. Several of the very architects of that 2015 APC triumph — Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, Rauf Aregbesola — have now converged on the ADC to challenge the very man whose political machinery was central to that historic victory: Bola Tinubu.
History offers perspective. The 2015 Buhari’s APC coalition secured about 15 million votes (53%), defeating Jonathan’s 12 million (44%). It was a coalition built on strategy, shared grievance, and disciplined unity.
By contrast, the 2023 election was the most competitive since 1999. Tinubu won with 8.7 million votes (36.61%). Atiku Abubakar secured 6.9 million (29.07%). Peter Obi (Labour Party) garnered 6.1 million votes (25.40%), while Kwankwaso (NNPP) obtained 1.4 million votes (6.23%). Notably, the top three candidates each won 12 states, while Kwankwaso secured only Kano State.
Although Tinubu, who chose Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate, met the constitutional threshold of 25% in at least 24 states, the geography of the vote revealed a fragmented mandate. Tinubu dominated the Southwest and parts of the North-Central, but Peter Obi achieved the unthinkable by defeating the incumbent in his Lagos stronghold, sweeping all the southeastern states and FCT. Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar cleared most of the Northeast and Northwest.
More significantly, the combined votes of Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso exceeded 15 million—nearly double Tinubu’s tally. On paper, this arithmetic presents a compelling case for a unified opposition. Together, they commanded electoral strength across more than 25 states—enough to satisfy constitutional requirements. But elections are not won on arithmetic alone.
The real challenge lies in unity, ego management, and coalition discipline. Nigerian political history is replete with alliances that collapsed under the weight of personal ambition. The same forces that could make the opposition formidable could also render it fragile.
The 2023 experience is instructive. Obi’s refusal to serve as a running mate and Atiku’s miscalculation in overlooking Nyesom Wike as his deputy weakened the opposition and accelerated the fragmentation of the PDP—a party that once governed Nigeria for sixteen years.
While an Atiku–Obi alignment may constitute the most formidable opposition configuration against the Tinubu–Shettima ticket, alternative permutations are likely to be politically unviable or suicidal.
While an Atiku–Obi alignment would represent the strongest opposition configuration against the Tinubu–Shettima ticket, alternative permutations may amount to political futility or suicidal.
While the opposition coalition is anchoring its campaign on prevailing insecurity and socioeconomic instability, President Tinubu’s administration has taken steps to address political sensitivities. Northerners occupy key security positions, including the Defence Ministers and the National Security Adviser, while prominent Christians head major economic institutions, including the Finance Ministers and the Central Bank Governor—moves widely interpreted as efforts to balance concerns arising from the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
The administration’s revenue reforms — particularly through the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) — have also increased allocations to subnational governments via the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). Similarly, Nigeria’s measured diplomatic response to external pressures, including reckless remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on alleged religious persecution, averted unnecessary geopolitical escalation seen in countries such as Venezuela and Iran.
Yet, beyond governance, the power of incumbency remains decisive. Control of institutions, influence over political structures, and access to state resources often shape electoral outcomes beyond public sentiment.
Equally concerning is the growing intrusion of ethnoreligious sentiment into political discourse. Supporter groups across party lines have, at times, resorted to divisive rhetoric that undermines national cohesion. If unchecked, such narratives risk overshadowing critical debates on the economy, security, and governance.
There is also the question of external influence. Claims that foreign actors could shape Nigeria’s electoral outcomes should be approached with caution. Global experience suggests that domestic realities ultimately prevail.
For both the ruling party and the opposition, the lessons are clear. If the opposition fails to consolidate, history may repeat itself. Similarly, if the ruling party becomes power drunk or tampers with its winning formula, it could also face unexpected consequences. In the end, 2027 will not merely be a contest of candidates—it will be a test of democratic maturity.
The gladiators on both sides would do well to study history. Nigeria has seen this script before—and the ending is rarely flattering.

Notorious Bandit Leader Dies
April 20, 2026
A notorious bandit kingpin, Kachallah Auwalu, has been killed during a violent clash between rival armed groups in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Naija News reports that the development is the latest in a series of deadly confrontations among criminal gangs operating within forest corridors in the state.
According to a renowned counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on Saturday at about 4:35 pm in the Maganda area.
The forested corridor has long been linked to recurring armed group activities and is considered a stronghold for bandits.
Quoting security sources, the publication reported that Auwalu was a prominent figure within one of the armed factions, wielding significant influence across the Maganda, Kuyello, and Dogon Dawa axis.
Makama stated that the clash was part of an ongoing internal confrontation between rival groups, a trend that has intensified in recent months within forest communities.
The report added that another faction, allegedly led by a notorious bandit leader, Dogo Gide, was mobilising towards the scene at the time of the incident.
Casualties were said to have been recorded on both sides, although exact figures remain unconfirmed as of press time.
In response to the escalating violence, troops under Sector 1 of Operation Fansan Yamma have been placed on alert to closely monitor the situation and prevent further breakdown of security.
The publication noted that surveillance and intelligence-driven operations have been intensified across Birnin Gwari and neighbouring communities.
Security agencies are said to be working to stabilise the area and curb the activities of armed groups operating within the forests.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of armed groups and a resurgence of bandit attacks in parts of the country, particularly in the North-West.
Residents in affected communities have continued to express fears over their safety as rival factions engage in violent supremacy battles.
In a related development, another notorious bandit leader, Dogo Isah, was reportedly killed during a violent clash with a rival faction in Kaduna State.
Isah, who was known for orchestrating high-profile attacks and terrorising residents in Kachia and parts of Kajuru Local Government Area, was said to have died during a confrontation over cattle rustling in Kachia forest on January 7, 2025.

Atiku Reacts As Abducted Passengers Regain Freedom In Benue
April 19, 2026
By Richard Ogunsile
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has commended security forces for their role in the rescue of abducted passengers along the Makurdi-Otukpo axis in Benue State, describing the operation as a testament to their professionalism and courage.
He noted that the swift intervention of the troops helped safeguard the lives and future of the young students involved in the incident.
Atiku said the operation once again demonstrated the military’s dedication to protecting citizens.
According to him, the rescue mission reflects the “unyielding commitment” of the armed forces to defending innocent Nigerians.
He added that the bravery and vigilance displayed by security personnel continue to inspire hope across the country.
The former Vice-President, however, acknowledged that the Makurdi-Otukpo road has in recent times been plagued by security challenges.
He noted that commuters along the route have frequently been targeted by criminal elements, heightening concerns among residents and travellers.
The successful rescue, he said, should be seen as a significant boost to ongoing efforts to restore safety in the area.
While praising the troops, Atiku stressed the need for sustained efforts to strengthen the nation’s security framework.
“Every Nigerian should be able to travel without fear,” he said.
He called for continued support for security agencies, including adequate funding and equipping of personnel to effectively tackle threats.
Atiku stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends on empowering those tasked with safeguarding lives and property.
He expressed optimism that with the right strategies and investments, the country can overcome its security challenges and ensure safety for all citizens.

Tinubu’s Minister May Resign As Osoba, Akande Asks Adelabu To Drop Gov’ship Ambition
April 20, 2026
Former Osun State Governor, Adebisi Akande, and former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, have reportedly urged the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to reconsider his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.
The elder statesmen were said to have advised the minister to align with the broader interests of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rather than pursue a potentially divisive bid.
Their intervention comes amid growing speculation that Adelabu has concluded plans to resign from the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition.
Sources familiar with the development indicated that the minister may step down this week, although no official confirmation has been issued.
Adelabu, who contested the governorship election in 2019 under the APC and in 2023 on the platform of Accord Party, has repeatedly expressed interest in contesting again in 2027.
Recent developments, however, suggest that Adelabu may not be the preferred candidate of influential figures within the party.
At a recent campaign flag-off in Ibadan, the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sharafadeen Alli, who is widely tipped as a leading contender, drew significant support from party stakeholders.
Notably absent at the event were Adelabu and another former governorship candidate, Teslim Folarin, an indication of growing divisions within the party.
President Tinubu had earlier directed all political appointees with ambitions for elective office to resign by March 31, 2026.
Despite earlier indications that he would contest, Adelabu did not step down before the deadline, further fuelling uncertainty over his next move.
However, supporters of the minister have continued to insist that he remains firmly in the race.
A source close to Adelabu confirmed that the minister is still committed to the APC despite the unfolding developments.
When asked whether he might consider another political platform, the source said, “He remains in the APC.”
An impeccable source told The PUNCH that the APC South-West leaders held an interactive session with Adelabu in Lagos, where his political ambition and its implications for party cohesion and President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid were discussed.
The source said, “I can confirm that there was indeed not really a meeting, but an interactive session with the Minister of Power over his Oyo State governorship ambition.
“The meeting was held in Lagos, and Chief Olusegun Osoba, Baba Akande and some party leaders from the South-West were in attendance.
“They urged the minister to drop his governorship ambition and align with the party’s interest and every move that can help President Bola Tinubu to return for another term.
“And the minister seems to agree with the advice of these elderly men, and everyone left on a joyous note.
“Don’t forget that this kind of move is advisory, but with the disposition of the minister at the interactive session, nothing suggests that he won’t heed this highly important, wise counsel.”
According to the source, party leaders emphasised internal harmony within the APC and cautioned against actions that could destabilise existing political arrangements in the South-West ahead of the 2027 elections.

‘Return of leaders to Umno signals calculated party reset’
20 Apr 2026
Analysts say move suggests attempt to improve position within Unity govt, but express qualms over genuine renewal
PETALING JAYA: The return of senior Umno figures, including Khairy Jamaluddin, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (pic) and Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar under the Rumah Bangsa narrative signals a calculated party reset ahead of the 16th general election (GE16), say analysts.
However, they are divided on whether it reflects genuine renewal or a consolidation of old power structures.
Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Prof Datuk Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said the move points to more than internal rebuilding, suggestive of a broader attempt to reposition Umno within the Unity government.
“This reflects a two-layered strategy – internal reconciliation to strengthen party structures, and a recalibration of power to enhance its bargaining position within the unity coalition led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.”
He pointed out that the return of high-profile figures could quietly reshape internal dynamics.
“A realignment of power within the party leadership is a real possibility. The return of prominent personalities may exert pressure on existing leaders – not through open confrontation but competition over legitimacy, influence and the party’s future direction.”
Awang Azman stressed that reintegration must be carefully managed to avoid internal friction.
“Without a clear transition period before these figures assume strategic roles or contest seats, tensions between long-standing loyalists and returning members could intensify,” he said, adding that a more assertive Umno could adopt an increasingly transactional approach within the Unity government, with stability hinging on political negotiations rather than formal arrangements, particularly in overlapping electoral contests.
International Islamic University Malaysia political analyst and Iseas–Yusof Ishak Institute fellow Assoc Prof Dr Syaza Shukri offered a more sceptical view, saying perceptions of reform have largely remained unchanged since the 2022 general election.
“People who voted for change didn’t vote for Umno. I don’t think it significantly alters views on reform. Voters already understood in 2022 that governing within a unity coalition would be difficult.”
She said the removal of certain Umno leaders stemmed more from internal disagreements than public pressure.
“These leaders were removed due to disagreements with Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, not because of voter sentiment.
“So, I don’t think it affects perceptions of reform. If anything, it reinforces the view that Umno is unlikely to change significantly.”
She said Umno’s internal reshuffle only deepens existing perceptions about its priorities.
“Reform has never been part of its language,” she said, adding that Umno appears more focused on political survival than transformation.
On the broader Unity government, she said credibility concerns extend beyond Umno.
“The loss of credibility was there from the start, and Zahid’s court cases being resolved the way they were only reinforced perceptions about political priorities.
“And now, Pakatan Harapan is facing its own controversies.”
She said voter behaviour has remained largely stable despite growing disillusionment.
“For voters, not much has changed. There is disillusionment but it has evolved rather than shifted dramatically.”
She added that Umno may now be in a relatively stronger strategic position within the coalition, not due to electoral gains but internal stabilisation and ongoing efforts to rehabilitate its image before GE16.
“I don’t think Umno or Barisan Nasional can win on its own or emerge as the largest coalition. But if the focus is on rebuilding its image, that in itself is already a ‘win’ for Umno.”

Pakistani inmate who escaped Sungai Buloh Prison recaptured
19 Apr 2026
A Pakistani inmate who escaped from Sungai Buloh Prison has been recaptured by police after a 10-day manhunt.
KUALA LUMPUR: A Pakistani man who escaped from Sungai Buloh Prison on April 9 has been apprehended by the police yesterday.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the inmate was arrested along Jalan Batu 14, Jalan Gombak Lama, Selangor at 5 pm and conveyed his appreciation to all parties who assisted in the manhunt.
The escapee, Muhammad Hassan, 24, had escaped while under police supervision at the Sungai Buloh Prison at about 6 pm after he attended trial proceedings at the Shah Alam Court.
The man had been arrested for sexual crimes against children under Section 377C and 392 of the Penal Code, Section 14(d) and (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Meanwhile, Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the escapee was arrested thanks to six days of intelligence gathering by his department’s intelligence and special operations division with cooperation from the Pakistan embassy.
He said the man was detained by an operations team while trying to escape after failing to produce valid identification documents.
“… the man then admitted to escaping while alighting from a police truck (on April 9) and had spent the entire week hiding in the forest around the construction site during the day.
“He also snuck into the construction site at night to seek refuge and sleep due to safety concerns and being attacked by wildlife, and was found wearing clothing stolen from the construction site,” he said in a statement today.
The Pakistan embassy had confirmed the identity of the man as the Pakistani inmate who escaped fromp police detention on April 9, he said, adding that checks found the man had arrived on Jan 11 via Kuala Lumpur International Airport on a 30-day social pass.
The man is suspected of committing violations under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is being held at the Immigration Depot for further action, he added.

Malaysian MPs to protest Israel’s death penalty in Brussels
19 Apr 2026
Malaysia sends cross-party MPs to Brussels to formally protest Israel’s death penalty for Palestinian detainees, reflecting national unity.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will send a cross-party delegation of Members of Parliament to an international conference in Brussels to lodge a formal protest against the Israeli Parliament’s move to impose the death penalty by hanging on Palestinian detainees.
PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the party has named two representatives, Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and Balik Pulau MP Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, to attend the conference.
“We are also awaiting names from other parties. Overall, we expect between six and eight MPs to take part in the convention in Brussels,” he said after delivering a speech at the Gombak PKR division 2026 annual general meeting today.
Amirudin said participation by representatives from various parties, including UMNO and PAS, reflects Malaysia’s firm unity on global humanitarian issues, following the Israeli Parliament’s decision to impose the death penalty without the right of appeal on Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks.
“I believe these representatives will carry the voice of Malaysians who are united in opposing genocide and any form of injustice against our friends in Palestine,” said Amirudin, who is also the Selangor Menteri Besar.
On the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 mission, he said the humanitarian aid mission is now approaching Sicily, Italy, after facing delays due to weather conditions.
Amirudin explained that he had to return to Malaysia temporarily to attend the State Legislative Assembly sitting after the mission team was stranded for two days in Barcelona due to storm forecasts.
“They had to stop to wait for safe wind conditions along the route. Insya-Allah, I will return there to rejoin the mission after the assembly sitting concludes,” he said.
According to Amirudin, the mission will pass through several key checkpoints, including Greece, Istanbul and Cyprus.
“So I want to see the route I can follow and also ensure that all participants are in good condition, healthy and safe,” he said.

Selangor sultan demands urgent action on persistent flooding
20 Apr 2026
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah urges the Selangor government to seek Dutch expertise for a sustainable flood solution, criticising the lack of effective results from annual allocations
SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor has issued a strong call for the state government to urgently prioritise resolving chronic flood issues. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah demanded more effective and immediate action through comprehensive planning.
He revealed he had repeatedly advised the government to seek expertise from international specialists, particularly from the Netherlands. The Ruler said this was to develop sustainable solutions to the long-standing problem.
“The flood issue is something I have raised dozens of times. Unfortunately, my advice has not been taken seriously…it is like pouring water on a yam leaf,” he said in his royal address.
He added that although allocations are made every year, no effective results are visible. Flooding continues to occur in several areas, especially residential zones, causing hardship to his people.
Sultan Sharafuddin also called for the cleaning of the Klang River to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water. He stressed he would not tire of calling for action until these problems are resolved.
His Royal Highness proposed greater focus on developing the waste-to-energy industry. He described this as a key sector for addressing waste management and sustainable energy challenges.
The Ruler additionally called for a more systematic approach to tackling potholes. This persistent issue continues to affect road users across the state.
Touching on pig farming, Sultan Sharafuddin reiterated that such activities are unsuitable in Selangor. He cited land constraints, proximity to densely populated Muslim areas, and pollution concerns.
“Despite this, there are still parties who refuse to comply with my directive,” he said. He suggested that pork supply for non-Muslims could instead be sourced from other regions, including Sarawak.
Meanwhile, the Sultan advised political leaders to set aside differences and work together. He urged this especially amid current economic uncertainties for the benefit of the people.
“Lately, I see too much politicking. This confuses the rakyat and can lead to division,” he stated. He called for responsibilities to be fulfilled with trust, honesty and sincerity to ensure Selangor’s continued progress.

PM Anwar urges global defence firms to partner with Malaysian manufacturers
20 Apr 2026
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim invites global defence primes to collaborate with Malaysia’s high-precision aerospace and manufacturing sector
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for deeper collaboration between global defence industry leaders and Malaysian manufacturers.
Speaking at the opening of Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security Exhibition Asia 2026, he highlighted Malaysia’s proven capability in high-value global supply chains.
Anwar stated that Malaysian companies have secured their position in the world’s most demanding commercial supply chains through a culture of precision and accountability.
He emphasised that this same standard is directly applicable to the defence and aerospace sectors.
“To the primes and Tier 1 suppliers here, come and find our manufacturers,” Anwar urged the international audience.
Anwar stated the approach allows the nation to maintain working relationships with all major global partners.
This strategy enables Malaysian suppliers to integrate into global supply chains without geopolitical complications.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said Malaysia aims to build a robust defence industrial base.
He emphasised that local companies must earn and retain their positions in international supply chains based on performance and discipline.
The government is committed to ensuring a reliable business environment for this sector.
This commitment includes the protection of intellectual property and enforcement of strategic trade controls.
Anwar also promised equal application of the law to support these industrial ambitions.
“These are the conditions without which none of what I have described this morning is possible and we take that seriously,” he said.
He urged industry to report any governmental friction or enforcement shortcomings directly.
“If something is not working, if the process creates friction where it should not or enforcement falls short, tell us directly. We will act,” Anwar added.
He concurrently highlighted the need for responsible governance of rapidly advancing technologies.
This includes artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and cyber capabilities.
Anwar noted that both governments and industry must play a role in this governance.
The Prime Minister was speaking at the DSA and NATSEC Asia 2026 exhibition.
The event brings together conventional defence systems and electronic warfare technologies.
It also serves as a platform to strengthen international cooperation through strategic dialogues.
Also present were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
The exhibition is open exclusively to government officials, industry professionals, and military personnel.
He invited those who have not yet engaged with local industry to consider why their peers have already begun doing so.
The Prime Minister opened the 19th edition of the exhibition, themed ‘Empowering the Capability and Resilience of Technology Miners’.
The event is being held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and runs until Thursday.

Singapore court draws line on ‘invisible’ harm, sets benchmark in landmark protection order
20 Apr 2026
SINGAPORE, April 20 — A family court in Singapore has set out how emotional and psychological abuse should be understood under newly expanded domestic violence laws, granting a personal protection order (PPO) to a woman who left her matrimonial home with her infant son after a series of escalating incidents with her husband.
The ruling, among the first under amendments to the Women’s Charter that came into force in January 2025, shifts the legal focus firmly towards the harm suffered rather than the perpetrator’s intent, marking a significant recalibration in how family violence is assessed.
In a written judgment, cited by Singapore-based media organisation CNA, Magistrate Allen Chong framed the issue starkly: “How should the law respond to conduct of this kind? The kind of conduct which leaves no bruises, that a man on the street might not recognise as family violence, but that a person living within it may experience as a slow intrusion into her sense of safety.”
The case centred on a woman who married in July 2024 and moved into her husband’s family home before giving birth in April 2025. She left the home in September that year with her five-month-old baby after what the court described as a “slow accumulation of smaller” incidents.
Among them were arguments that escalated into shouting, the snatching and throwing of her phone, and an incident in which the man admitted using his foot to push her away while she was holding their child.
The magistrate placed weight on a message sent by the husband afterwards apologising “for kicking you and making you feel unsafe and in danger”, describing it as “the words of a man who knew he had crossed a line”.
While the husband argued that his actions were defensive or part of ordinary marital disagreements, the court rejected this, finding that both the woman’s reaction and the objective circumstances pointed to intimidation and distress. It also ruled that he could not rely on self-defence.
Crucially, the judgment clarified that emotional or psychological abuse under the revised law is “harm-focused, not intention-focused”.
CNA reported Magistrate Chong as saying that proof of a perpetrator’s subjective intent to cause distress is not required.
“The question is what the conduct did to the complainant or would objectively do to someone in their position,” he said.
The expanded legal definition now explicitly includes behaviour that “torments, intimidates, harasses or distresses” a person, or could reasonably be expected to cause mental harm — even if it takes the form of a single incident or conduct not directly targeted at the victim but still perceived by them.
Applying this framework, the court found that the incidents formed a pattern of increasing aggression within the first year of marriage, culminating in physical contact while the woman was holding their child.
The magistrate said the husband’s failure to acknowledge the seriousness of his conduct was a key concern, describing it as a risk factor for future violence.
A PPO was granted to restrain the man from committing further family violence, and both parties were ordered to attend counselling.
The husband has appealed the decision to the High Court.

Singapore-US nuclear training deal signals quiet shift in energy strategy
20 Apr 2026
SINGAPORE, April 20 — Singapore has taken another step in its cautious exploration of nuclear energy, signing a training agreement with the United States to build up its regulatory and safety expertise, The Straits Times reported.
The Republic’s nuclear safety regulator, under the National Environment Agency (NEA), inked the deal with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC) on Friday, establishing a two-year programme aimed at strengthening technical capabilities and oversight.
Under the Memorandum of Cooperation, a dedicated training programme will be developed for NEA’s Nuclear Safety Division, which was formed in October 2025. Officers will undergo courses and attachments with the US NRC, gaining hands-on experience in areas such as reactor regulation, safety assessments, probabilistic risk analysis and inspection procedures.
“This enhanced expertise will deepen Singapore’s nuclear regulatory knowledge as Singapore studies the potential deployment of nuclear energy,” NEA said.
The agreement was signed by NEA Radiation Protection group director Ang Kok Kiat and US NRC Office of International Programs director David Skeen during the Convention on Nuclear Safety Review Meeting organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.
Singapore has yet to decide whether to adopt nuclear power, but the move underscores a steady effort to build institutional readiness as it weighs its options. With limited renewable energy resources, nuclear power is being studied as a low-carbon alternative that could support both climate targets and energy security.
The NEA said the training initiative builds on an existing partnership with the US NRC, which has long included technical exchanges and cooperation on nuclear safety matters.
It also sits within a broader US-Singapore civil nuclear cooperation framework, reinforced by the signing of the “123 Agreement” in July 2024, allowing the city-state to tap American expertise in nuclear technologies and research.
Singapore has been laying the groundwork on multiple fronts. In March, the NEA announced plans to commission three studies examining international safety standards and the environmental impact of potential nuclear facilities, including reactor design, operational safeguards and accident prevention.
Efforts to develop local expertise are also under way. The Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute, launched at the National University of Singapore in July 2025, aims to train 100 nuclear specialists by 2030.

Muizzu lies again, denies claiming those who voted against PNC are against prioritizing religion
20 Apr 2026
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been accused of dishonesty after denying remarks in which he implied that those who did not vote for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) in recent elections were individuals who do not prioritize Islam.
Speaking at a gathering in AA. Rasdhoo, President Muizzu stated that election results consistently show public support for the PNC's ideology, with the majority favoring a religious and nationalistic vision.
Consequently, when RaajjeTV questioned the President during Monday's press conference regarding his right to make such a statement, he responded that his remarks had been misinterpreted. The President further clarified that he had never made any statement suggesting that any group of Maldivian citizens were not Muslims.
However, the President noted that the majority of Maldivians prioritize national interest and religious values, identifying these citizens as those who voted for the PNC. He further stated that opposition protests have been observed involving conduct that falls outside the bounds of religious and ethical standards.
However, when questioned about the matter during the press conference, the President stated that the journalist had misinterpreted the situation. He noted that while the Constitution guarantees certain rights regarding the freedom of assembly, these rights are subject to specific limitations. The President further highlighted that participants in the MDP protests were using profane language and engaging in indecent behavior. He emphasized that such actions are contrary to the principles of Islam.
Broadly speaking, the President has retracted his earlier remarks, in which he had implied that those who did not vote for the PNC in the recent elections were individuals who do not prioritize Islam.

Formulation process for 10th wage board for journos soon
20 APRIL 2026
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan yesterday told parliament that the process of forming the 10th Wage Board for journalists and media professionals will begin soon.
He said the 9th Newspaper Wage Board Award was published in the Bangladesh Gazette on September 12, 2019. However, due to disagreements between journalists and newspaper owners regarding income tax payments, the 9th Wage Board has not been implemented. Currently, six writs and civil petitions related to the implementation of the 9th Wage Board are ongoing.
He made these remarks in response to a question from opposition MP Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad during the parliamentary session chaired by Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal.
Answering another question from ruling party MP Mohammad Ali Asgar, the minister said, “To ensure media freedom, the Press Council Act of 1974 is being updated to make the Press Council stronger, more effective, and media-friendly.”
He added that the Journalist Welfare Trust is providing assistance to journalists who are unable to work, suffering from physical or mental illness, or unable to afford medical treatment while also recognising special contributions to journalism.
Up to March of FY 2025-2026, financial grants have been given to 1,110 unwell, insolvent, and injured journalists and to families of deceased journalists. In addition, scholarships worth Tk 73.26 lakh have been awarded to meritorious children of 402 journalists. During Ramadan 2026, iftar and Eid gifts worth Tk 1.12 crore were distributed among 2,000 journalist families.
In response to a question from Chandpur-2 MP Jalal Uddin, the minister said currently there are four state-owned TV channels in Bangladesh. Out of 55 approved private TV channels, 37 are in full operation. No new TV channel approvals are pending. Future applications will be processed according to regulations.

Sacked police personnel form human chain, demand reinstatement
19 APRIL 2026
Police personnel who were sacked during the Awami League-led government formed a human chain in front of Police Headquarters in Dhaka today, demanding reinstatement to service.
The demonstrators alleged that many of them were dismissed over minor issues. They later challenged the decisions at the Administrative Tribunal and won their cases, with the verdicts subsequently upheld by the Administrative Appellate Tribunal.
Speaking at the programme, dismissed sub-inspector Zakaria Mostafa said, “We got verdicts from the courts, but Police Headquarters is not implementing them. Instead, steps are being taken to move the cases to higher courts.”
He claimed that in several instances, disciplinary actions were taken over social media activities, including comments and status updates. “Losing our jobs over such minor issues has put us in severe hardship,” he said.
Zakaria further alleged that despite having verdicts in their favour from both tribunals, the authorities were opting to file Civil Petitions for Leave to Appeal (CPL) with the Supreme Court, which could significantly delay the resolution.
“A case in the Supreme Court can take seven to ten years to be finally disposed of. This prolonged process is extremely difficult for us,” he added.
The speakers also claimed that earlier, around 130 to 150 police personnel were reinstated based on similar tribunal verdicts. However, several hundred others with comparable rulings are now being denied the same opportunity.
“We all have similar verdicts. There should be no discrimination in implementing them,” sacked constable Uzzal said.
The demonstrators urged the government and senior police officials to implement the court verdicts and reinstate them without further delay.

Pentagon says Afghanistan withdrawal review to be finalised in coming months
By Fidel Rahmati
April 20, 2026
The Pentagon said a new review into the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan is expected to be finalised in the coming months.
The U.S. newspaper Stars and Stripes reported, citing Pentagon officials, that a special panel set up to examine the August 2021 withdrawal has largely completed its investigation.
The panel, established last year on the orders of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, was tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the chaotic end to the U.S. military mission.
During the withdrawal, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport, an attack that became a defining moment of the operation.
A Pentagon spokesperson said the panel has reviewed more than nine million documents from multiple agencies and completed interviews with senior military and civilian officials.
The final report is expected to include detailed findings and recommendations aimed at preventing similar failures in future operations.
The U.S. withdrawal in August 2021 marked the end of a two-decade war and was followed by the rapid collapse of the Afghanistan government and the takeover by Taliban forces.
The evacuation effort drew widespread criticism over planning, coordination and intelligence assessments, particularly in the final days at Kabul airport.
U.S. officials say the 2020 agreement between Washington and the Taliban, signed during the presidency of Donald Trump, played a significant role in shaping the timeline and conditions of the withdrawal.
Subsequent reviews have found that both the Trump administration and that of Joe Biden bear responsibility for aspects of the outcome, including the collapse of the former Afghanistan government.

Afghanistan Flooding: Displacement & Immediate Humanitarian Needs
April 20, 2026
Devastating floods triggered by heavy rainfall have affected more than 70,000 people across Afghanistan, destroying homes, damaging farmland, and disrupting access to basic services. This comes as the country remains one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, despite a modest reduction in the overall number of people in need. Years of conflict, economic fragility, underinvestment in basic services have left large segments of the population with diminished resilience. During the current year, approximately 45 per cent of the population – are projected to require humanitarian assistance, reflecting the combined impact of overlapping shocks and deep structural vulnerability.
Based on the report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 9 million individuals have been impacted by climate hazards in the last one year, with over 500,000 displaced by floods, and other disasters. On the other hand, flooding triggered by recent heavy rains across Afghanistan has killed and injured hundreds of people, destroyed thousands of homes and left more than 73,000 others affected. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the floods have struck more than 30 provinces, damaging homes, farmland and critical infrastructure, and deepening an already fragile humanitarian situation.
The organization warned that protection risks are rising sharply in affected areas, with nearly 14,000 people, particularly women and girls. Limited access to services and resource shortages have made it difficult to respond adequately, despite efforts to provide psychosocial support, documentation and awareness programs. Most of those displaced have sought shelter with relatives, while others are living in the open. The UN report says that around 72 percent of affected families are staying with host communities, reflecting both the scale of displacement and the lack of formal shelter options.
The floods have been particularly acute in eastern and southeastern provinces, where damaged roads and infrastructure have made it harder to deliver aid and increased the vulnerability of affected populations. According to UN assessments, more than 7,600 homes have been destroyed and over 15,000 acres of agricultural land damaged, disrupting livelihoods in a country where much of the population depends on farming. Despite the scale of the disaster, humanitarian access remains limited. Aid agencies have assessed 98 districts so far, but only about 12,000 people have received assistance, leaving many without immediate support. The floods have also compounded economic hardship, with aid officials warning of rising poverty, debt and psychological distress among affected families.
In the meantime, the United Nations Population Fund said the disaster has severely disrupted access to health and protection services, particularly for women and girls. Access to reproductive health care has been especially affected, the organization says. Afghanistan’s disaster management authority has also reported higher casualty figures, saying that nearly 200 people have been killed and more than 250 injured in floods, landslides and related disasters, which started on March 26. The latest flooding highlights the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events and urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The immediate needs identified include food, shelter, cash assistance, and psychosocial support. Humanitarian agencies have called for increased assistance to address the growing needs and prevent further deterioration of living conditions.

Afghanistan: a Bridge Between Central and South Asia
April 20, 202
The recent meeting between the Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the President of Kyrgyzstan underscored Afghanistan’s pivotal role in ensuring regional stability. Both sides emphasized that peace and development in Afghanistan are essential not only for Central Asia but also for broader regional security. The CSTO highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the Tajikistan–Afghanistan border, reflecting the importance of preventing cross-border threats.
Political and military analysts alike have reiterated that Afghanistan’s stability is a cornerstone for connecting Central and South Asia. As Khalil Ahmad Nadem noted, Afghanistan can serve as a vital bridge between regions, fostering economic and security cooperation. This perspective aligns with the CSTO’s recognition of Afghanistan as a key factor in regional peace.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has consistently maintained that its territory will not be used against other nations. Since assuming power, the Islamic Emirate has pledged to prevent interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs and to ensure that no external threats originate from its soil. The commitment was reassured, stressing that Afghanistan is secure and will not allow its territory to be exploited.
Given this policy, it is imperative that regional actors, particularly CSTO member states, engage more directly with Kabul. Strengthening diplomatic relations, reopening embassies, and fostering dialogue will not only build trust but also enhance collective security. The Islamic Emirate’s assurances of non-interference and its commitment to stability should be met with reciprocal diplomatic initiatives.
Furthermore, continuous monitoring and preventive measures, as discussed between CSTO and UN representatives, must be complemented by constructive engagement with Afghanistan’s authorities. Analytical and intelligence cooperation is valuable, but without direct diplomatic channels, regional security efforts risk being incomplete.
Afghanistan’s current stability under the Islamic Emirate provides a unique opportunity for Central Asian states to deepen ties. Reestablishing embassies and formal diplomatic relations will pave the way for broader cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and security. Such steps will not only reinforce Afghanistan’s role as a stabilizing force but also ensure that regional security frameworks are inclusive and effective.
Afghanistan’s stability is no longer a distant aspiration but a present reality under the Islamic Emirate. Regional powers must recognize this and act accordingly by strengthening diplomatic engagement with Kabul. Doing so will consolidate peace, foster mutual trust, and unlock Afghanistan’s potential as a bridge between Central and South Asia.
