Total Fertility Rate Dips, Sharpest Decline among Muslims: National Family Health Survey -5 Data

By Esha Roy

May 9, 2022

Muslims’ fertility rate has seen the sharpest decline among all religious communities over the past two decades, shows data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), conducted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

In keeping with the downward trend seen over the years, the community’s fertility rate dipped to 2.3 in 2019-2021 from 2.6 in 2015-16. While all religious communities have shown a decline in fertility, contributing to a dip in the nation’s total fertility rate, the fall has been sharpest in the Muslim community, from 4.4 in NFHS 1(1992-93) to 2.3 in NFHS 5(2019-2021).

The Muslim community’s fertility rate, however, remains the highest among all religious communities, with the Hindu community following at 1.94 in NFHS 5, down from 2.1 in 2015-16. The Hindu community had a fertility rate of 3.3 in 1992-93. NFHS 5 has found that the Christian community has a fertility rate of 1.88, the Sikh community 1.61, the Jain community 1.6 and the Buddhist and neo-Buddhist community 1.39—the lowest rate in the country.

An accelerated decline in Muslims’fertility rate has taken place twice – between 1992-93 and 1998-99 as well as between 2005-6 and 2015-16, when it dropped by 0.8 points.

“The fertility gap between Hindus and Muslims is narrowing. High fertility is mostly a result of non-religious factors such as levels of literacy, employment, income and access to health services. The current gap between the two communities is because of Muslims’ disadvantage on these parameters. Over the past few decades, an emerging Muslim middle class has been realising the value of girls’ education and family planning,’’ said Poonam Muttreja,

The percentage of Muslim women who have had no schooling reduced from 32 per cent in NFHS 4 (2015-16) to 21.9 per cent in NFHS-5 (2019-21). In contrast, for Hindus, it saw marginal change—from 31.4 per cent in NFHS 4 to 28.5 per cent in NFHS 5.

The NFHS 5 report said the number of children per woman declined with women’s level of schooling. Women with no schooling have an average of 2.8 children, compared with 1.8 children for women with 12 or more years of schooling. Women in the lowest wealth quintile have an average of 1.0 more children than women in the highest wealth quintile, and economic betterment organically leads to lower fertility rates, the report has found.

“The data also shows that Muslims are increasingly conscious of family planning. The use of modern contraception among Muslims increased from 37.9 per cent in NFHS 4 to 47.4 per cent in NFHS 5. The margin of increase was higher than in Hindus,’’ said Muttreja.

Muslims have also increasingly adopted modern spacing methods of contraception—from 17 per cent in NFHS 4 to 25.5 in NFHS 5, which is the third highest after Sikhs (27.3 per cent) and Jains (26.3 per cent). Spacing refers to how soon after a pregnancy a woman gives birth again.

“A higher percentage of Muslim men showed a better attitude towards family planning. About 32 per cent of Muslim men feel contraception is women’s business, which men should not worry about. This number was higher for Hindus—at about 36 per cent. As per NFHS 5, the use of contraceptive pills is highest among Muslims, while the use of condoms is third highest among Muslims, after Sikhs and Jains. Thus, it is important to recognise the community’s adoption of family planning and acknowledge that Islam is not an impediment to family planning in any way. The

Muslim populations in Indonesia and Bangladesh have also seen lower fertility due to a greater number of spacing methods in their public health systems. India needs to do more and expand its basket of contraceptive choices and include implants as well in its family planning programme,’’ Muttreja said.

The total fertility rate in rural areas has declined from 3.7 children per woman in 1992-93 to 2.1 children in 2019-21. The corresponding decline among women in urban areas was from 2.7 children in 1992-93 to 1.6 children in 2019-21. In all NFHS editions, irrespective of the place of residence, the fertility rate peaks at the age of 20-24, after which it declines steadily.

Thirty-one states and Union Territories, including all states in the south, west, and north regions, have fertility below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. Bihar and Meghalaya have the highest fertility rates in the country, while Sikkim and Andaman and Nicobar islands have the lowest.

MAY 08, 2022

The Varanasi district court had ordered to conduct videography and survey of areas outside Gyanvapi mosque. The petitioners had moved the court last April seeking to restrain opponents from damaging the idols

The Gyanvapi Masjid and Shringar Gauri Mandir case has taken a new turn as Vishwa Vedic Sanatan Sangh announced on Sunday that it will withdraw the petition filed in the court for regular Darshan of the temple located in the famous mosque complex of Varanasi.

Sanatan Sangh chief Jitendra Singh Bisen told News18 that Rakhi Singh, his niece and one of the give women who filed the petition in Varanasi district court, will withdraw the case. However, he did not give the reason behind the move.

The district court had ordered earlier to conduct videography and survey of the shrine on a petition, filed by Rakhi and others, seeking permission to perform daily puja and rituals at the temple. The petitioners had moved the court on April 18, 2021 seeking to restrain the opponents from damaging the idols.

On their plea, the court commissioner appointed had videographed and conducted a survey of some areas outside the Gyanvapi mosque on Friday. Later, the other side had filed a petition to replace the commissioner appointed by the court, which was heard by Varanasi Civil Judge (Senior Division) Ravi Kumar Diwakar on Saturday morning.

The counsel for the mosque management committee (Anjuman Intezamiya Masajid), Abhay Nath Yadav said the court had not given any order to do the videography inside the mosque but to do it till the ‘Chabutra’ (courtyard) outside the barricading. Yadav said, “The videography and survey started at around 4.00 pm on May 6 and the videography was done till the ‘Chabutra’ on the western side of the mosque. “After that, when the commissioner made an effort to go inside the mosque by getting its entrance door opened, I opposed it, pointing out that the court has not given any such order under which videography can be done inside the mosque," he said.

“The court-appointed commissioner claimed he has the orders to open the locks and get videography done. But, the truth is that there is no such order like this, hence I raised questions on the impartiality of the court commissioner," Yadav said.

Litigant friends of the Hindu side Vijay Shankar Rastogi said, “The court while hearing the plea seeking to change the court commissioner, has reserved its order." “The court-appointed commissioner is discharging his responsibility with honesty. An application was moved on behalf of the Anjuman Intezamiya Masajid Committee to create hurdles for him, accusing him of colluding with petitioners," he added.

Grand Ayatollah Sobhani: Destruction of Jannat al-Baqi by Saudi ‘a second Ashura’

Ayatollah Sobhani

-----

May 9, 2022

Ayatollah Sobhani said: “The anniversary of the destruction of Jannat al-Baqi is a second Ashura and Muslims around the world, especially Shi’as, must express their hatred toward the perpetrators of this crime and convey it to the people of the world.”  On the 90th anniversary of the Saudi destruction of tombs of four of the twelve Imams buried Madinah’s Jannat al-Baqi cemetery, Grand Ayatollah Ja’far Sobhani had issued a statement on (July2016) stressing that the Muslims of the world, especially Shi’as, must express their hatred toward the perpetrators of this crime to the world.

The statement by the revered source of emulation is as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

The anniversary of the destruction of the heavenly shrines of the Ahlul-Bayt, the Family of the Prophet [Muhammad], and the desecration of the mausoleums of the Infallible Imams [buried] in Jannat al-Baqi, is a second Ashura and Muslims around the world, especially Shi’as, must express their hatred toward the perpetrators of this crime and convey it to the people of the world.

On this day, the army of ignorance and deviation, armed with shovels and picks aggressively stormed the holy shrines of the four Imams and other relatives of the Family of the Messenger [buried] in al-Baqi and razed them to the ground.

Another time when indecent acts and hatred were committed was when al-Mutawakkil, the Abbasid caliph, destroyed the dome and the tomb of Imam Husayn. While striking the ground, he repeated: “They desire to put out the light of God with their mouths, but God will perfect His light though the faithless should be averse” [The Holy Quran 61:8]

The Noble Quran calls the Muslims of the world toward the promotion and glorification of the houses which are the centres of the praise of God and says: “In houses God has allowed to be raised and wherein His Name is celebrated…” [The Holy Quran 24:36]

In his book Dur al-Manthur, Jalaluddin al-Suyuti writes that the Holy Prophet recited this verse in the mosque. The man asked the meaning of the world “buyut,” the Prophet said: “this means the houses of the prophets.”

At this time, while referring to the house of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra, Abu Bakr asked: “Is this house also one of these houses?” The Prophet answered: “Yes, this is one of the greatest of them.”

The Askariyayn Shrine [in Samarra] was destroyed for the same reasons.

In their homes, the Imams and their dear mother [Lady Fatimah al-Zahra] spent their time worshipping God Almighty. Unfortunately, instead of upgrading and repairing the shrine, it was destroyed.

The customs of the wise men of the world, even the customs of the followers of former religions, revere the graves of their elders and scholars and build shrines over their graves as a tribute to them. Even now, the Prophet Abraham’s grave in Occupied Palestine and the other tombs of prophets and their successors in Jordan Syria, Egypt and Iraq are evidence of this fact.

Unfortunately, the Arabs of Najd are far from Islamic culture and rather than act on the verse: “Say, ‘I do not ask you any reward for it except the love of [my] relatives’” 42:23], they have been antagonistic and they destroyed the shrines, along with dozens of monuments related to the Family of the Prophet and other religious personalities.

Now, not a day goes by where Islamic historical monuments are not destroyed near the Two Holy Shines under the pretext of expanding the shrines and nothing remains but that the cities of Makkah and Madinah are two western cities in all their meaning.

The Muslims of the world call on the rulers of Najd and Hejaz to give liberty and freedom to the Two Holy Mosques to allow the return of peace and order, permission for the lovers of the Ahlul-Bayt to rebuild their shrines, for all Islamic nations to be free to carry out their duties at the time of Hajj and Umrah so the Holy Shrine is a place of divine security sanctuary for all.

French Muslim Footballer Karim Benzema Sues French Far-Right Politician, Damien Rieu

Muslim French Footballer Benzema

-----

May 9, 2022

French Muslim footballer Karim Benzema is suing a far-right politician who had linked him with extremism.

The 34-year-old striker is suing Damien Rieu, a member of French far-right party Reconquête, for defamation for two tweets Rieu posted in 2020, according to French daily Le Parisien.

In one of the tweets, Rieu posted a photo of Benzema with Nourdine Mamoune, an imam for the French town of Meaux, east of Paris.

"Interesting to discover @benzema visits Imam Nourdine Mamoune, [whose home] has just been raided," Rieu said on 23 October 2020.

Just hours before Rieu's tweet, Mamoune's home had been raided by French police, a few days after French schoolteacher Samuel Paty was executed by an Islamic State sympathiser. The police took no further action against Mamoune after the raids, Le Parisien reported.

A month later, Rieu posted a tweet with a photo of Benzema posing with his index finger raised - a gesture of faith for Muslims.

The photo of Benzema was posted along with three other photos of armed men - some of them members of the Islamic State -making the same gesture.

"I think @benzema wants to send us a message," Rieu's tweet read.

Rieu posted an image of his court summons to Twitter on Tuesday, saying: "Karim wants me to shut up... tell him I've won all my trials."

Far-right parties have increasingly become part of France's political mainstream. Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, came second in the French presidential elections, winning more than 40 percent of the votes.

France's centrist government has been accused of implementing Islamophobic policies.

Benzema, who was born in France and is of Algerian descent, has had his share of court troubles.

The striker was convicted last year for complicity in a bid to blackmail former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena with a sex tape. He has appealed the ruling.

How a neo-conservative think tank defined British Muslims

9 May 2022

In the wake of the calamity of the Iraq invasion of 2003, one might have supposed that the ideology which lay behind Tony Blair and George W Bush’s bloody misadventure would have been discredited. This has not happened. Neo-conservatism has continued to set the parameters for a great deal of policy discourse, and its supporters have continued to occupy many of the most prominent positions in British (and American) public life.

There are a number of reasons for this resilience. In the UK, Policy Exchange, a London-based think tank, is one organisation which kept the neo-conservative flame burning. Though its public profile is small, it has exerted prodigious influence in political circles. In conventional politics, Policy Exchange was at first associated in particular with ‘marketisation', an ugly word which describes how the disciplines of the private sector have been introduced into the education system and the wider civil service. The think tank’s most enduring achievement, however, has probably been the reshaping of government policy towards British Muslims.

The British government, police and intelligence services originally saw their job as enforcing the law rather than policing ideology or personal beliefs

An Online Petition Made to Request the Cancellation of Former Afghanistan NSA’s Speech at the Oxford Union

By Saqalain Eqbal

09 May 2022

With Marcos Jr. tipped to win, Philippines at tenuous moment

BY JIM GOMEZ

MAY 09, 2022

Filipinos stood in long lines to choose a new president Monday, with the son of an ousted dictator and a champion of human rights the top contenders in a tenuous moment in a deeply divided Asian democracy. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the strongman ousted in a 1986 army-backed “People Power” uprising, held a seemingly insurmountable lead in pre-election surveys. But his closest challenger, Vice President Leni Robredo, has tapped into shock and outrage over the prospect of a Marcos recapturing the seat of power and harnessed a network of campaign volunteers to underpin her candidacy. Eight others are in the presidential race, including former boxing star Manny Pacquiao, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and former national police chief Sen. Panfilo Lacson. Long lines of voters turned up early across most of the country, with the start of voting delayed by a few hours in a few areas due to malfunctioning vote machines, power outages, bad weather and other problems. 7,000 Boko Haram Members Surrender: Is Rehabilitation Good Enough?

Amanda Thomson

May 8, 2022

On March 24th, approximately 7,000 Boko Haram troops and Islamic State West Africa Province members surrendered in Northeastern Nigeria. Boko Haram was originally centered in Maiduguri, but in 2014, the terrorist group was eventually pushed out of the city by the Civilian Joint Task Force and relocated to the countryside. Despite the moderate slowdown, violence is still common in Nigeria. According to weekly updates from the Council on Foreign Relations’ Boko Haram Security tracker, approximately 18 attacks occurred between March 19th and 25th, 2022, with violence ranging from kidnapping for ransom and murder. Still, the mass surrender may be a sign that the conflict is diminishing.
