Sharia, Quazi Court Decisions Not Legally Valid Or Enforceable: Indian Supreme Court

April 29, 2025

Granting maintenance to a Muslim woman, the Supreme Court has reiterated that a Sharia Court or a Court of Quazi has no recognition under Indian law and their decisions are not binding on anyone.

The bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, in a February 4 ruling made public on April 22, cited the top court’s 2014 ruling in Vishwa Lochan Madan v Union of India wherein it was held that fatwas have no legal status in the country’s Constitutional scheme.

Writing for the bench, Justice Amanullah said the “‘Court of Quazi’, ‘Court of (Darul Kaja) Kajiyat’, ‘Sharia Court’ etcetera, by whatever name styled, have no recognition in law. As noted in Vishwa Lochan Madan (supra), any declaration/decision by such bodies, by whatever name labelled, is not binding on anyone and is unenforceable by resort to any coercive measure.”

The bench said “the only way such declaration/decision can withstand scrutiny in the eye of law could be when the affected parties accept such declaration/decision by acting thereon or accepting it and when such action does not conflict with any other law. Even then, such declaration/decision, at best, would only be valid inter-se the parties that choose to act upon/accept the same, and not a third-party.”

The woman had approached the Supreme Court against the August 3, 2018 decision of the Allahabad High Court which dismissed her plea challenging the Jhansi Family Court order refusing to award her any maintenance.

It was the second marriage for both the woman and her husband, who was in the BSF, in 2002. A daughter and a son were born to them.

In 2005, the husband filed for divorce in the ‘Court of Quazi’, Bhopal, but it was dismissed in view of a compromise between them on November 22, 2005.

The woman alleged that he used to beat her demanding dowry and turned her out of home along with her children in May 2008.

On September 16, 2008, the husband filed a suit for divorce in the ‘Court of (Darul Kaja) Kajiyat’, Bhopal. On October 13, 2008, she filed a suit before the Family Court, seeking maintenance of Rs 5,000 a month for herself and Rs 1,000 a month for each child.

The Family Court partly allowed the petition for maintenance and granted Rs 1,500 per month to the daughter and Rs 1,000 per month to the son. It, however, dismissed her claim for maintenance on the finding that the husband did not leave her but rather she herself, due to her nature and conduct, was the reason for the dispute and her departure from the matrimonial home.

She then approached the High Court which dismissed her plea, noting that since she was living separately from her husband without sufficient reason, the findings recorded by the Family Court could not be termed illegal or perverse.

Deciding her appeal, the Supreme Court noted that the compromise agreement dated November 22, 2005 only said that the parties had decided to live together and agreed that they would not give each other any occasion to complain. “Hence, the very basis/reasoning for rejecting the appellant’s claim for maintenance appears to be ex-facie unsustainable… We are of the view that maintenance could not have been denied to the appellant-wife under the prevailing circumstances,” the bench said.

It said “the Family Court could not presume that a second marriage for both parties would necessarily entail no dowry demand”.

The bench asked the husband to pay her a monthly maintenance of Rs 4000 from the date of filing of the application for maintenance before the Family Court. It also directed that the children too be paid maintenance from that date until they become major.

OK To Say ‘RIP’? Here’s What Malaysian Preachers Advise Muslims To Use Instead To Express Respect And Sympathy

By Malay Mail

------------

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — Former Indonesian president Joko Widodo’s recent gesture in raising his hands during the funeral of Pope Francis in the Vatican City has inadvertently ignited a debate in the Muslim world.

While many agree he was being respectful of a world leader, just as many – including in Malaysia – wondered if it was right for Jokowi to do so as a Muslim leader?

Islamic religious leaders here have also weighed in on the issue, here’s what they said.

“Muslims are not allowed to say RIP to non-Muslim deceased,” local preacher Syed Mohd Bakri Syed Ishak who goes by the moniker PU Syed told Sinar Harian today, using the initialism for Rest in Peace.

Citing from Surah At-Taubah, verse 113, he said RIP is considered a form of prayer specific to non-Muslims and should not be used by Muslims.

He clarified that Muslims are still encouraged to visit and respect the deceased, but should not raise their hands in prayer for non-Muslims.

Another local preacher Azhar Idrus also told Sinar Harian that Muslims should not pray for forgiveness or peace for deceased non-Muslims, even if they are close relatives.

“What is allowed is to pray for guidance for non-Muslims who are still alive,” he was quoted as saying in explanation.

The Malay daily also reported the Federal Territories Mufti’s Office explaining that Muslims are allowed to express condolences for non-Muslims, but offered alternative phrases to respectfully show their sympathies without compromising their beliefs.

“May Allah replace it with something better for you,” is one such appropriate phrase, according to the mufti’s office.

Dhaka Walls Have Islamist Hizbut Tahrir Posters Asking The Military To Take Over

AHMEDE HUSSAIN

29 April, 2025

ANI

--------

On more than one occasion, some Bangladeshis carried flags of Islamic terrorist organisations like Al Qaeda and ISIS in downtown Dhaka. Photos of known terrorists like Osama bin Laden are flaunted in a procession. We don’t know if any of these persons with violent extremist ideology have been arrested or even interrogated.

This pattern of criminal negligence on the part of the law enforcers, however, is not at all new. Banned outfit Hizbut Tahrir (HT) has also carried out agitation programmes in broad daylight, and only a handful of their members were arrested.

The HT believes in a state where the non-Muslims do not have a voting right, however, non-Muslims may voice “complaints in respect to unjust acts performed by the rulers or the misapplication of Islam upon them”. Such a bigoted, not to mention fascist, outfit should’ve no right to operate in a democratic country. Bangladesh took seven long years to understand that—the HT was banned in 2009 on a flimsy ground that some members of the party were found in possession of a couple of homemade bombs.

Despite the ban, the HT’s posters asking the Bangladesh Army to take over power can be seen all over Dhaka. We’ve repeatedly tried to contact the outfit’s leadership on social media regarding their activities, but no response was received.

HT’s name was pasted on the walls of the country’s capital even when Sheikh Hasina was in power and the so-called “War on Terror” was at its peak. After the ouster of Hasina in a mass upsurge, the appeal to the army to launch a coup has come back in full vigour.

There are two strange things about this phenomenon— during Hasina’s rule, opposition activists were arrested left and right, so much so that, according to The New York Times, millions faced trial on politically motivated charges trumped up by her regime. But not a single member of the HT has been known to be arrested during the last 10 years of Awami League rule, nor has the government done anything to ideologically fight the outfit.

The situation hasn’t changed even after the Gen-Z Revolution. It is indeed deeply disturbing that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus appears to have no clue whatsoever about the origins of the posters, as to where they are published, who puts them on the walls of Dhaka, where CCTV cameras are almost in front of all the apartment buildings. What is more disconcerting is the HT’s call for the army to take over power at a time when Bangladesh looks forward to peace and stability, especially when the army is deployed all over the country to help the police establish law and order.

One of the reasons why the subsequent governments and the military establishment have turned a blind eye to the HT’s activities is the group’s possible infiltration in the armed forces and the law-enforcing agencies. And won’t be a surprise if these intrusions reached the higher echelons of the said institutions. The HT is accused of being involved in coup attempts in five Muslim majority countries—Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, and Iraq.

Need for a strong hand

Bangladesh’s security establishment has to find out the HT cells that are thought to be working in different public and private universities across the capital. Bangladesh army and the country’s spy agency, the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), need to run an internal investigation to find out the length and breadth of the HT infiltration into the forces. This is especially important because the HT’s declared modus operandi is to come to power through a coup d’état. And it’s only natural that the group will work vigorously in places where the likely putsch will take place—the cantonments.

There is no denying that the Yunus government’s performance in this regard is no less than shambolic. The fragrant disregard of the HT to its banning by carrying out one procession after another in downtown Dhaka is a slap in the face for the administration. Instead of taking it on the chin and moving on, the Yunus administration should go all hog and unearth the group’s backers—civil, military, or otherwise—and bring them before justice.

Failure to do so will make us question the civil and military administration’s sincerity in fighting this banned outfit. What Bangladesh cannot afford is a military coup, especially not the kind that can take Bangladesh back to the Stone Age.

Yunus has to go strong on all Al Qaeda and ISIS sympathisers. Hasina’s ouster has brought freedom to all Bangladeshis, but not for those who stand against the very idea of Bangladesh itself. The sooner Yunus and his advisers understand that, the better.    Source: theprint.in

False Claim That Schoolchildren Aged 9-16 Will Have To Learn About Islam As A “Main Study” In The UK Is Being Shared Online

28 APRIL 2025

Muslim girl studying the Qurʾān.

------------

A false claim that all schoolchildren in the UK aged 9-16 will now have to learn about Islam as a “main study” is being shared online.

Posts making the claim have been shared widely on Facebook and on X (formerly Twitter) in recent weeks, with one post saying on 25 March: “Breaking news from the UK: As of tomorrow in the UK all Primary & Secondary school children age 9 to 16 must learn about Islam as a main study.

“It will be a compulsory educative system replacing hinduism and christianity at schools. God help the United Kingdom [sic].”

But this isn’t correct. A spokesperson for the Department for Education (DfE) confirmed to Full Fact no such change is taking place.

How is religion taught in schools?

We don’t know exactly what the posts mean when they refer to a “main study” or a “compulsory educative system”, but they don’t accurately describe what schoolchildren are required to study.

All mainstream state-funded schools in England must offer religious education (RE) as part of the basic curriculum.

However it is not mandatory for all school children to study RE. Parents have a legal right to withdraw their children from some or all RE classes. Pupils can also choose to withdraw themselves once they turn 18.

The DfE confirmed it does not specify the content of RE lessons or how it should be delivered. This is determined by local councils for schools in their area, through an Agreed Syllabus Conference—a statutory body brought together locally to produce an agreed syllabus for RE.

The law stipulates that the RE curriculum drawn up locally “shall reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain”.

There has been no change to this legislation to replace study of Christianity with Islam, as the post suggests. The DfE told us there is no national requirement for schools to teach about Islam, though it is likely to be covered in RE lessons as a major world religion.

Islam is also included as one of the topics which can be studied as part of the RE GCSE. Pupils must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of two religions, with options also including Buddhism, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Judaism and Sikhism.

Schools in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland also teach RE under their own rules, and curriculums. We’ve not covered these in detail in this fact check, but they also reflect that their nations’ religious traditions are in the main Christian, while also covering other world religions.

What about academies and free schools?

The rules at academies and free schools, including faith-based schools, are a little different.

They must also provide RE teaching for all pupils, except those who have been withdrawn by their parents. However, the type of RE depends on whether the academy has a religious designation, which means that under its funding agreement it must “provide RE in accordance with the tenets of the particular faith specified in the designation”. They may also provide RE that is in line with a locally agreed syllabus and teach about other faiths “if they choose”.

For academies and free schools which are not faith-based, the type of RE that must be provided follows the same law as state schools, reflecting that British religious traditions are broadly Christian but taking account of other religions.

Government guidance also states that these academy schools must “not provide an RE syllabus to pupils by means of any catechism or formulary which is distinctive of any particular religious denomination”.

Before sharing information that you see on social media it’s important to consider whether it comes from a trusted and verified source. Full Fact has previously checked other education claims, including viral posts falsely stating the new interim Ofsted chair controls the National Curriculum and about phone bans in schools.

Amnesty accuses Israel of ‘live-streamed genocide’ against Gaza Palestinians

April 29, 2025

Amnesty ‘documented multiple war crimes by Israel, including direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects, and indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks’ in its report. (Reuters)

------------

PARIS: Amnesty International on Tuesday accused Israel of committing a “live-streamed genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza by forcibly displacing most of the population and deliberately creating a humanitarian catastrophe.

In its annual report, Amnesty charged that Israel had acted with “specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza, thus committing genocide.”

Israel has rejected accusations of “genocide” from Amnesty, other rights groups and some states in its war in Gaza.

The conflict erupted after the Palestinian militant group Hamas’s deadly October 7, 2023 attacks inside Israel that resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants also abducted 251 people, 58 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel in response launched a relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip and a ground operation that according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory has left at least 52,243 dead.

“Since 7 October 2023, when Hamas perpetrated horrific crimes against Israeli citizens and others and captured more than 250 hostages, the world has been made audience to a live-streamed genocide,” Amnesty’s secretary general Agnes Callamard said in the introduction to the report.

“States watched on as if powerless, as Israel killed thousands upon thousands of Palestinians, wiping out entire multigenerational families, destroying homes, livelihoods, hospitals and schools,” she added.

Gaza’s civil defense agency said early Tuesday that four people were killed and others injured in an Israeli air strike on displaced persons’ tents near the Al-Iqleem area in Southern Gaza.

The agency earlier warned fuel shortages meant it had been forced to suspend eight out of 12 emergency vehicles in Southern Gaza, including ambulances.

The lack of fuel “threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens and displaced persons in shelter centers,” it said in a statement.

Amnesty’s report said the Israeli campaign had left most of the Palestinians of Gaza “displaced, homeless, hungry, at risk of life-threatening diseases and unable to access medical care, power or clean water.”

Amnesty said that throughout 2024 it had “documented multiple war crimes by Israel, including direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects, and indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks.”

It said Israel’s actions forcibly displaced 1.9 million Palestinians, around 90 percent of Gaza’s population, and “deliberately engineered an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”

Even as protesters hit the streets in Western capitals, “the world’s governments individually and multilaterally failed repeatedly to take meaningful action to end the atrocities and were slow even in calling for a ceasefire.”

Meanwhile, Amnesty also sounded alarm over Israeli actions in the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank, and repeated an accusation that Israel was employing a system of “apartheid.”

“Israel’s system of apartheid became increasingly violent in the occupied West Bank, marked by a sharp increase in unlawful killings and state-backed attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian civilians,” it said.

Heba Morayef, Amnesty director for the Middle East and North Africa region, denounced “the extreme levels of suffering that Palestinians in Gaza have been forced to endure on a daily basis over the past year” as well as “the world’s complete inability or lack of political will to put a stop to it.”

‘Pahalgam Attack A Conspiracy To Spread Unrest In India’: All Religion Meet

Apr 29, 2025

Lucknow: An all religion meet on Monday condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed.

"Terrorists have no religion and faith", said president of Lucknow Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (LGPC) Rajendra Singh Bagga while talking to reporters at UP Press Club after the meet. "We all stand united and demand the govt to take the strictest possible action against the perpetrators of this heinous act," said Bagga.

Acting LGPC president Jaggi said that in order to maintain harmony and peace in the country, religious representatives of all religions should come together on one platform and strongly oppose terrorism. It is a well-planned conspiracy of Pakistan to spread unrest in India and destroy mutual brotherhood," he added.

Imam of Eidgah, Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali said, "Islam does not allow terrorism and all the religions of the world preach peace and harmony. Islam insists that peace and harmony should be established. The way the terrorists killed people after asking their religion makes it clear that this is an evil conspiracy to attack Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb".

Buddhist leader Gyan Lok Bhante said, "Non-violence is the ultimate religion and only through it peace can be achieved."

"We should pray for the innocent people killed by terrorists in Pahalgam. God may grant them eternal peace and console the bereaved families," said Father L Robert, chief priest of Cathedral Church.

RD Diwedi from Aashiana Parivar urged people to work with the govt to deal strictly with the terrorists."

UP govt shuts down 10 madrasas calling them “illegal”; Students forced to move to govt schools

April 29, 2025

The Uttar Pradesh government has shut down 10 madrasas in Shravasti district, located in close proximity to the Nepal border terming them “illegal.”

There are 297 Madrasa in Shravasti district of which the authorities have claimed that 192 are illegal.

This move has created panic and a sense of uncertainty among many madrasas which are homes for hundreds of students and are a source of income for several teachers.

The SDM raided 12 madrasas in the areas surrounding the border. These raids were led by DM Ajay Kumar. After the raids, the authorities alleged that the 10 madrasas failed to provide necessary documents to the officers leading to their closure.

One of the madrasas, Jamia Abu Bakr Anwar Ul Quran in which 200 students were enrolled. These students have now been pushed to study in nearby government schools as the administration has shut the institution and stopped all of its operations. Similarly, other madrasas were also stopped from operating in Majra Rampura of Gram Panchayat Srinagar and Verandah.

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched several similar operations in the past. Several madrasas and masjids faced demolitions under the pretext of encroachment, illegal or a road widening project. These crackdowns have often faced criticism.

However, as the crackdown continues amidst the debates on how beneficial the Waqf Bill is for Muslims, further action will be taken against the madrasas, said the official statement issued by the District Magistrate.

Second Religious Structure, A Century-OldMazar At Dehradun, Demolished This Week

April 28, 2025

Dehradun authorities demolished a mazar located on the premises of Doon Medical College Hospital early Friday morning, marking the second demolition of an Islamic religious structure in Uttarakhand within a week.

At around 2 a.m., a joint team comprising officials from the Revenue Department, Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department (PWD), and the hospital administration carried out the demolition of a century-old shrine dedicated to Sufi saint Baba Kamaal Shah.

Authorities stated the structure was built on hospital land and lacked legal documentation, classifying it as an encroachment.

Dehradun Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal said a complaint was received via the Chief Minister’s helpline, and the medical college administration had also raised concerns. “The Doon Medical College flagged the structure’s presence. The administration requested excavators, and the demolition was carried out by the revenue department,” she said.

Additional Director of the Directorate of Medical Education, Dr. Ravindra Bisht, revealed that a local resident had filed a complaint four months ago, after which an inquiry was launched. “We were asked to provide documents proving the mazar’s legitimacy, but we had none,” he explained. Officials also claimed that a notice was issued to the caretaker, who did not respond.

However, local residents argued the demolished mazar was a registered Waqf property and alleged that the act violated Supreme Court guidelines on Waqf land. Waqf Board Chairman Shadab Shams confirmed that the shrine was officially recorded with the board.

The demolition follows the removal of another Islamic shrine in Rudrapur earlier in the week, undertaken as part of a road-widening project by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Both incidents have intensified political debate in the state.

Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana warned against selectively targeting Islamic institutions, calling it divisive. In contrast, BJP’s Manveer Singh Chauhan welcomed the demolition, asserting it as part of broader action against over 600 illegal religious encroachments, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

The events have sparked concerns over religious targeting and legal due process in handling heritage religious sites. — With Agencies Inputs

MP CM says anyone committing jihad or love jihad will be strictly punished

April 28, 2025

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav Monday stated sternly that no act of ‘Jihad’ or ‘Love Jihad’ will be tolerated in the state, and anyone found indulging in such activities would be strictly punished.

“Whoever commits a crime will be punished. Our government has not permitted any form of Jihad or Love Jihad on the soil of Madhya Pradesh,” the CM asserted.

“Anyone found indulging in such activities, whether within the state or after fleeing outside, will not be spared. Our police will apprehend them wherever they may be. This is our firm commitment,” Dr Yadav emphasized.

The CM’s strict stance is being seen in connection with the ongoing investigation by the Bhopal police in three different, but presumably interconnected cases, in which a group of Muslim boys is alleged to have carried out ‘Love Jihad’ by trapping Hindu girls in colleges and subsequently raping, blackmailing and threatening the victims.

The police have already arrested three accused on charges of rape, blackmail, and threatening, and also under the Freedom of Religion Act, on the complaint filed by three Hindu girls in different police stations of the city.

The police have also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, as it is suspected that it might involve a gang operating a sex racket through the rape, obscene videos and blackmailing of Hindu girls.

According to Bhopal Commissioner of Police, Harinarayan Chari Mishra, the three victims have lodged cases in the Ashoka Garden police station, Bagh Sevaniya Police Station, and Jehangirabad police station of the state capital.

The mastermind Farhan Khan aka Faraz, along with Ali Khan and Sahil Khan, have been arrested.

The Commissioner said that the trio has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the MP Freedom of Religion Act, and other relevant sections.

According to police, the accused men used to introduce themselves as Hindus, and on that pretext they befriended and allegedly raped Hindu girls.

The three men are also accused of recording obscene videos and then blackmailing the victims by threatening to make the videos viral.

Police investigations have revealed that some other accused, named as Abraar Khan of Kolkata, Nabeel from Bihar, Shamsuddin alias Saad of Bhopal, and some other accused are still absconding, and police teams are in search of them.

Further police investigations are on, and sources say that the number of victims and the accused is also likely to increase in the course of the investigation.

Massive protest in Parbhani against Waqf Amendment Bill

April 28, 2025

Thousands of people gathered in Parbhani in a program in protest against the Waqf Bill. The event was organised at Eidgah maidan by the Allah India Muslim Personal Law Board.

The well-organized protest was joined by several prominent faces including Asaduddin Owaisi, Board President Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani general Secretary Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi,  SDPI vice president Muhammad Shafi, Sadatullah Hussaini and others joined the peaceful program.

The guests criticised the government for taking a step that is ‘unconstitutional’ and demanded the withdrawal of the bill. During their address, the speakers also condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and offered condolences to the victims and their families.

Asaduddin Owaisi during his address to the massive crowd said, “I ask Modi to withdraw the bill and I had said in the parliament that it is a black law and only Modi will benefit from this. This law snatches our property.”

Owaisi then asserted that waqf solely belongs to Allah and questioned the BJP government for the intentions behind the bill. Accusing the BJP of planning to snatch mosques and graveyards and other waqf properties, he said that the claims of Waqf Bill benefiting the poor Muslims are all lies.

Investigate motive behind Indian-Pakistani marriages: MP Nishikant Dubey

Mukesh Ranjan

29 Apr 2025

RANCHI: Questioning the intent 'Pakistani nationals living in India under the guise of marriage,' Godda MP Nishikant Dubey has called for a probe into such arrangements and urged the Centre to tighten the visa system here.

Dubey stated that there is a hidden agenda behind these marriages and questioned whether matrimonial matches within Indian society were hard to find.

"When the process of visa cancellations began, two types of visas emerged and an in-depth investigation is required. Pakistani girls have been married here, and they cannot become citizens of India and have been living here for years," the MP said.

He added, "Even Pakistani men have been married into India. What is the motive behind these marriages, it needs to be investigated."

Dubey said, "Those who migrated to Pakistan in 1947, their properties were taken over by the government under the Enemy Property Act," adding that this implies that Indians marrying their daughters into Pakistan and Pakistanis marrying their daughters into India are enemies of this country.

"We need to deal with them first," he added.

India had on Friday (April 25) announced the suspension of visa services for Pakistani nationals with immediate effect and revoked all existing valid visas issued to them, except for long-term, diplomatic, and official visas.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries following Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, where 28 people, mostly tourists were killed and over a dozen were injured in one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike, after terrorists opened fire on a popular meadow.

Amidst this action, this statement of Nishikant Dubey has come to the fore, which has created a stir in political circles.

The government has also made it clear that complete caution is being taken in all such cases and every visa application is being thoroughly investigated.

Supreme Court finds no error in Allahabad HC impleading Centre and ASI in Shahi Idgah mosque case

April 29, 2025

The Supreme Court on Monday found no error in the Allahabad High Court’s decision to implead the Centre and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in suits filed by Hindu worshippers seeking removal of the Shahi Idgah mosque from the Mathura site they claim to be Lord Krishna’s birthplace.

“One thing is clear. The amendment to the original plaint by the Hindu plaintiffs has to be allowed,” said Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, presiding over a two-judge bench.

The bench, also comprising Justice Sanjay Kumar, was hearing an appeal by the mosque committee against the March 5, 2025, high court order allowing the Hindu side to amend its petition and to add the Centre and ASI as parties to the case. The Hindu side had sought to implead the ASI saying the mosque was under the agency and hence exempt from the application of the Places of Worship Act 1991, which requires preserving the religious character of a place of worship as it was on August 15, 1947.

On April 4, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Hindu petitioners. Hearing the plea again on Monday, the CJI said, “This plea is absolutely wrong…The High Court should have allowed the amendment to add the parties to the suit.”

The court added that it would, however, assess whether the order was effective and also its impact on the mosque side seeking the rejection of the plaint.

The counsel for the Muslim side said there was also the issue of whether the suit by the Hindu plaintiffs was barred and whether the high court had the jurisdiction to entertain it.

To a query from the Supreme Court, the mosque committee’s counsel said that it was yet to file its written statement on the amendment plea. The court directed that the written statement might be filed too.

The Hindu side had approached the Allahabad High Court seeking impleadment of the ASI and the Centre pointing to the existence of a notification under sub-section (3) of section 3 of Ancient Monuments Preservation Act (VII of 1904) published in the official gazette on December 27, 1920, declaring the property as a protected monument.

The Hindu plaintiffs contended that the property being a centrally protected monument, they had to place on record new facts for the adjudication of the case.

Pahalgam Massacre: Pakistani Terrorist Former Para Commando, Says Probe

Apr 29, 2025,

NEW DELHI: Hashim Musa, the identified Pakistani terrorist behind the Pahalgam massacre, is a former para commando of Pakistan Army’s Special Forces, investigations into the terror conspiracy have confirmed.

Sources told TOI that Musa, now a hardcore terrorist working with the Pakistan-based banned terrorist outfit Lashker e Taiba (LeT), was sent by the LeT masterminds to Kashmir on a specific mission to unleash terror attacks on non-locals as well as security forces. “It is possible that he was loaned by the Pakistan special forces like the Special Service Group (SSG), to the LeT,” an officer of the security establishment here said.

Para-commandos of SSG are highly-trained in unconventional warfare and specialise in covert operations. The intensive and rigorous training regimen focuses on physical conditioning and mental fitness, besides strategic thinking. SSG commandos are adept at handling sophisticated weapons as well as hand-to-hand combat and have high navigation and survival skills.

A senior officer said Musa’s Pakistan Army background — confirmed during the questioning of 15 Kashmir overground workers (OGWs) who have emerged as key suspects in the Pahalgam attack probe for having facilitated the Pakistani assailants by arranging logistics and helping in the reconnaissance — is being seen as evidence of ISI’s role in the Pahalgam terror attack, as also earlier strikes in Kashmir. The latter include the October 2024 terror attacks at Gagangir, Ganderbal, in which 6 non-locals and a doctor were killed, and at Buta Pathri, Baramulla, which had left two Army personnel and two Army porters dead.

Musa has emerged as the common perpetrator in all three attacks. Junaid Ahmad Bhat and Arbaaz Mir, two other local terrorists trained in Pakistan, were also involved in the Gagangeer and Buta Pathri attacks but were neutralised in separate encounters with the security forces in November and December 2024. Musa has since been working to carry forward the terror mission to target non-locals in Kashmir, and struck big by killing 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, at Baisaran.

The Pahalgam attack investigation has thrown up the involvement of a local network of OGWs and terror facilitators in south Kashmir, who guided the Pahalgam attack team and arranged logistics including shelter and possibly helped in transportation of weapons used in the attack. Detailed reconnaissance of the attack site was carried out with the locals’ involvement, helping in mapping the terrorists’ hiding places before and after the attack.

Though the information so far has confirmed the role of two Pakistani terrorists Hashmi Musa and Ali Bhai and as many locals — Adil Thoker and Asif Shaikh — the questioning of OGWs points to the involvement of more Pakistani terrorists.

A source said the combing operations in the jungles surrounding Baisaran are at an advanced stage, with the location of the attacks now “reasonably known”. “The search has now been narrowed to a limited area,” an officer told TOI.

Omar music for BJP's ears: J&K CM pledge not to use Pahalgam attack for statehood demand

Muzaffar Raina

29.04.25

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly resembled a microcosm of Parliament on Monday, with politicians of all persuasions championing a nationalist agenda and chief minister Omar Abdullah pledging not to use the Pahalgam tragedy to press the Centre for statehood.

Omar’s conciliatory gestures have coincided with Valley politicians climbing down from their longstanding demand for talks with Pakistan and asserting this was a time for justice and not dialogue.

Omar appeared to strike the right note with members of the country’s saffron ecosystem, who had been gunning for Kashmiris since the Pahalgam killings but lavished praise on him on Monday.

While Kashmiris have expressed grief at the killings, the mainstream Valley politicians’ stand seemed at odds with the dominant opinion on the street.

To the ordinary Kashmiri, the Centre’s abrogation of Article 370 provisions, downgrading of Jammu of Kashmir into a Union Territory and crackdown on dissent are matters too important and painful to dismiss.

The Assembly held a special session on Monday to discuss Pahalgam and passed a unanimous resolution condemning the terror strike.

Omar said it was the biggest attack on civilians in 21 years and had created a situation where one didn’t know when the next attack would come.

In an emotive address, he recalled his meeting with the families of the victims and said he had no words to apologise to them.

“Knowing (that) Jammu and Kashmir’s security is not the responsibility of an elected government, still, as chief minister of the place, as tourism minister, I had invited them to come to this place. As a host, it was my responsibility to ensure that they went back safely. I could not do that,”he said.

“One or two came to me and asked what their fault was. They said (they) had come to enjoy vacations but (had paid with) their lives for this vacation. Those who did it say they have done it for our good. But did we tell them… did it happen with our permission? None of us are with this attack.”

Omar said this was first time in 36 years that he had seen people coming out on the streets from Kathua to Kupwara to condemn such killings.

He, however, advised the authorities to tread cautiously and ensure that people were not alienated, apparently alluding to the explosions at the homes of militants’ families and the murders of the rebels’ family members since the Pahalgam massacre.

The chief minister added that he would not use this opportunity to ask for the restoration of statehood.

“With what face will I use the Pahalgam incident to tell the Centre to give me statehood? Is my politics so cheap? Do I have so little regard for the lives of the 26 men (killed)?” he said.

“We have spoken about statehood in the past and will do so in the future also. But curse be on me if I go to the Centre and tell them that 26 people have died and give it now. We will talk about it but not at this juncture.”

Omar said no other state or Parliament could understand the pain of these 26 innocent lives lost as deeply as “this House” did.

Members of the Rightwing ecosystem lapped up the speech, many of them calling it heartening and mature. Pro-BJP portal OpIndia lauded Omar for showing political maturity and for refusing to “exploit tragedy for statehood demands”.

PDP legislator Waheed Para told the House this was the first time that Kashmir and the country were mourning together.

“We are with the country, with the nation,” he said. “The objective of the attack was communal. Hindus have shown patience. Kashmiri Muslims called it aterrorist attack.”

Para, responding to a question outside the Assembly about possible talks with Pakistan, said justice for the Pahalgam victims was more important than anything else.

People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone said there used to be a social sanction for (anti-India) violence in Kashmiri society but when people came out on the streets, it was proof of the social stigmatisationof violence.

“People are (now) not willing to accept violence. This is the beginning of the end,” he said, while warning against the creation of a situation that facilitated the return of the pro-violence mindset.

Former chief minister Farooq Abdullah told reporters that he had always supported talks with Pakistan but, today, it was time to give justice tothe victims.

“Today, Bharat wants not Balakot but something that will ensure such things do not happen again,” he said. “We have regrets that our neighbour still does not understand that they havekilled humanity.”

Later, the House unanimously passed a resolution condemning the “inhuman terror attack on touristsat Pahalgam”.

The names of the 26 dead were read out and made part of the obituary reference by the Speaker. Two minutes’ silence was observed in their memory.

The resolution vowed to “resolutely defeat the nefarious designs of those who seek to disturb the communal harmony and progress of the nation and of J&K” and said it was a direct assault on the ethos of Kashmiriyat.

Hindu edge in Mathura mosque row: Government, ASI can be added as defendants, says SC

R. Balaji

29.04.25

The Supreme Court on Monday observed that prima facie there was nothing wrong with an Allahabad High Court order allowing Hindu litigants to implead the Centre and the Archaeological Survey of India in the Mathura Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute.

The high court had on March 5 allowed amendments to two lawsuits and permitted the petitioners to make the Union home ministry and the ASI respondents.

“We think your plea (challenging the maintainability) is wrong. Under Order VI Rule 17 read with Order 1 Rule 10 of the CPC (Code of Civil Procedure), the high court can allow the amendments. One thing is clear. The amendment to the original plaints of the Hindu plaintiffs has to be allowed under the CPC,” a bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar told the counsel appearing for the mosque committee.

The bench, however, deferred the hearing due to paucity of time.

The apex court’s oral observation comes as a big boost to the Hindu claimants who wanted to include the ASI as a defendant because they argued that their demand for the restoration of Krishna Janmabhoomi was not barred by the 1991 Places of Worship Act.

The Places of Worship Act mandates the preservation of the religious character of a place of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947. However, the Hindu claimants insist that the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sthal was an ancient protected monument and therefore the dispute should be adjudicated on the basis of the Ancient Monuments Act, 1904.

At the last hearing on April 4, the bench had agreed to examine the plea of the mosque committee challenging the high court order allowing the Hindu claimants to implead the Centre and the ASI as parties to the case.

While issuing notice on the mosque committe’s plea, the apex court had orally observed that both the high court and the plaintiffs (Hindu claimants) could amend their pleas and that the high court/civil court could direct any party to be joined as a plaintiff or defendant in a suit under Order 10, Rule 2 of the CPC.

“When you take the defence relying upon a particular Act (Places of Worship), then they (Hindu groups) are entitled to amend the plaint or replication, that the Places of Worship Act will not apply,” CJI Sanjiv Khanna had remarked.

Government aims to make Indonesia halal industry leader

 April 29, 2025

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Industry aims for Indonesia to become the world's leading producer of halal products, citing the industry's vast potential as evidenced by export transactions reaching US$64.11 billion in 2024.

"We must firmly bolster and improve the entire halal industry ecosystem. This is not just a goal but a strategic necessity," Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza stated at the Halal Indo 2025 expo event launch in Jakarta on Monday.

According to Riza, Indonesia's position in the global Islamic economy continues to improve across various sectors.

This progress is reflected in the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2023/2024, which shows Indonesia has moved up one rank to third place, behind Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

However, Indonesia still requires more push for the halal-based pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors compared to countries where Muslims are not the majority.

Another challenge in developing the halal industry is the global branding of halal products, which is not yet optimal.

Riza pointed out that other countries have established strong positions in the global halal market, such as Australia, which has rapidly become the largest halal beef supplier, and China, a leading supplier of Muslim clothing.

"These countries have implemented strategic branding to secure their position in the global halal market," he remarked.

To boost the branding of the domestic halal industry to become a leading producer in the world, the Ministry of Industry will organize the Halal Indonesia International Industry Expo (Halal Indo) 2025, scheduled for September 25-28, 2025, in Tangerang, Banten.

Last year's Halal Indo event attracted over 12 thousand visitors, with a transaction value of Rp1.3 billion (around US$77,419), and a total commitment of Rp6 billion (around US$357,320).

Enhanced Nusuk Card to safeguard Malaysian pilgrims from forgery as Haj journey begins, says religious affairs minister

29 Apr 2025

SEPANG, April 29 — The enhanced Nusuk Card is now equipped with a quick response (QR) code to prevent forgery of the official identification card for haj pilgrims, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

He said the card now has several layers of security features to ensure the safety of its holders.

“This means that any attempt to duplicate it would be difficult as it comes with multiple enhanced security layers introduced by the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah,” he told reporters after attending the Send-off Ceremony for Malaysian Haj Pilgrims for the 1446H/2025M Haj Season here today.

Also present was Lembaga Tabung Haji chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain.

Mohd Na’im said the Nusuk Card, introduced three years ago as the official identification document for pilgrims, has helped ease the entry of haj pilgrims from across the globe into the Masjidil Haram in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and other pilgrimage sites while performing the fifth pillar of Islam.

Earlier, Mohd Na’im reminded the 284 Malaysian pilgrims who departed for the Holy Land early this morning to safeguard their Nusuk Cards at all times, as the card contains personal data, including passport and visa information, enabling easy identification of the pilgrims.

“You must take good care of the Nusuk Card since it’s similar to our MyKad. Remember my advice, treat it just like you would your MyKad,” he said.

On flight arrangements for the 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims for this haj season, Mohd Na’im said a total of 100 special chartered flights via AMAL by Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Saudia Airlines have been scheduled starting today, with the final flight set for June 1.

“The first group of Malaysian pilgrims is expected to arrive at the Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah at 7.50 am (Saudi time) tomorrow,” he added.

Malaysia’s official haj quota allocated by the Saudi Arabian government this year is 31,600 pilgrims, who will arrive in the Holy Land in stages. — Bernama

Lawyer: No legal basis for non-Muslim parents to sue Firdaus Wong over conversion video

By Malay Mail

29 Apr 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — The High Court reportedly heard today that eight non-Muslim parents have no legal basis to compel preacher Firdaus Wong to remove a video allegedly promoting the covert conversion of minors.

According to a report in Free Malaysia Today, Firdaus’s lawyer, Norazali Nordin, argued that breaches of constitutional rights between private individuals are not actionable under public law.

“A private individual can only sue the executive or government representatives in public law,” he was quoted as saying.

He reportedly added that the parents had not proven that any children were converted without consent, nor that the video constituted a private nuisance.

Norazali was also quoted as saying that allegations of public nuisance fall under criminal law and must be acted upon by the public prosecutor.

In response, lawyer M Visvanathan reportedly said the video infringed the parents’ rights under Article 12(4) of the constitution.

He argued that Firdaus’s actions undermined the right of non-Muslim parents to determine their children’s religion.

Visvanathan reportedly urged the court to declare Firdaus in breach of constitutional rights and to restrain him from posting similar videos.

According to the report, Justice Amarjeet Singh is set to deliver his ruling on July 10.

Firdaus came under public scrutiny last year after a TikTok video allegedly showed him advising on ways to convert non-Muslim school-going minors.

26 Million Meals for 200,000 Pilgrims: Indonesia’s Hajj Preparations in Full Swing

Antara

 April 29, 202

Jakarta. As the departure time approaches, the Religious Affairs Ministry ensures that all services for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims while in the Holy Land are ready.

Director of Foreign Hajj Services at the Ministry, Muchlis M. Hanafi, said on Tuesday that operational departures from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia will begin on May 2.

"In accordance with the directive from the Religious Affairs Minister, we are striving to prepare everything meticulously and carefully to provide the best service to the Hajj pilgrims," he said.

Muchlis explained that services in Saudi Arabia cover five areas: meals, transportation, accommodation, general services, and services during the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage.

For accommodation, the Ministry has prepared 205 hotels in Mecca and 95 hotels in Medina to house Indonesian Hajj pilgrims.

"There will be 203,320 regular Hajj pilgrims we will serve across 300 hotels in Mecca and Medina," he said.

In Mecca, the farthest hotel from the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) is 4.5 kilometers away. Meanwhile, in Medina, all hotels are located in the MarQuaziyah area, around one kilometer away.

Regarding transportation, Muchlis revealed that services are provided in three areas. First, intercity pilgrimage transport, serving routes such as Medina – Mecca, Jeddah – Mecca, Mecca – Jeddah, and Mecca – Medina.

Second, the "Shalawat" buses will shuttle pilgrims between hotels and the Grand Mosque. Third, transportation for the peak Hajj rituals in Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina.

"These are the three transport areas we’ve prepared for Indonesian pilgrims," he said.

Regarding catering, the Ministry has partnered with 55 catering companies to supply 84 meals in Mecca and 15 meals during the peak Hajj days at Armuzna. In Medina, 21 companies will prepare 27 meals for each pilgrim.

"In total, we’re preparing 127 meals per pilgrim while they are in Saudi Arabia, amounting to 25.8 million meal boxes," he explained.

Catering companies are required to use Indonesian-made ingredients, particularly for spices. Of the 611 tons of spices needed, 475 tons have already been sourced from Indonesia.

"Domestic products are playing a major role in this year’s Hajj operations," he said.

To address traffic congestion during the 7th to 15th of Dhu al-Hijjah in Mecca, ready-to-eat meals are being prepared and delivered in advance. These meals, including dishes like rendang and opor, are produced domestically. So far, 2.4 million meal packages have been delivered.

For services during the peak of Hajj from the 8th to the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the Ministry is collaborating with eight companies for the first time. These companies will manage services for 203,320 pilgrims, covering everything from their arrival to departure, including support during the critical days at Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina.

Any attempt to impose foreign ideologies on Afghan nation will fail, says Khairkhwa

April 29, 2025

KABUL: Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa, the acting Minister of Information and Culture, during a ceremony marking the 8th of Saur, stated that any attempt to impose foreign ideologies on the Afghan people will fail.

According to a videotape on the ministry’s X page on Monday, Khairkhwa also added that the Islamic Emirate will never forget the sacrifices of the Afghan people and is committed to serving the nation.

“Considering the country’s history, it is important to avoid ethnic, linguistic, religious, and regional biases and work collectively for the prosperity of the country,” he said, mentioning that some malicious groups are attempting to manipulate the minds of Afghan youth using the media.

The acting minister of information and culture also said: “We no longer have an enemy within the people, because these people want someone who will protect their religion and honor. All Afghans have made sacrifices, and it is not impossible that they should all be included in the government and be deserving of salaries.”

The 8th of Saur (April 27) is celebrated in Afghanistan to commemorate the victory of the Afghan Mujahidin over the Soviet-backed Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in 1992.

This date marks the fall of the communist government that had been in power since the Soviet invasion in 1979.

ICT sets May 25 for submitting probe report in Ashulia genocide case

28 Apr 2025

DHAKA, April 28, 2025 (BSS) - The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today set May 25 for submitting probe report in a genocide and crimes against humanity case lodged over the killing of six youths during the July-August mass uprising and subsequently torching their bodies to conceal the evidence.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder passed the order, allowing a time plea of the prosecution.

Prosecutor Mizanul Islam moved the plea before the court, while prosecutors BM Sultan Mahmud and Faruk Ahammed were present during the hearing.

"We have identified a new video of a torching police van in Ashulia. The matter of how the killings took place there came before us in a new way. So we need a little more time to complete the probe and pleaded for one more month in this connection," Prosecutor Mizanul Islam said.

The ICT on April 15 sent former additional superintendent of police (crimes and ops) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar circle) Md Shahidul Islam and former detective branch (DB) inspector Md Arafat Hossain to jail in the case.

According to the prosecution, police members in Ashulia on August 5, 2024, allegedly shot and killed six youths and put their bodies into a police van. The van was then set ablaze in an attempt to make it appear as though the protesters had torched the vehicle, resulting in the deaths.

"Tragically, one of the victims was still alive when the fire was set. Police poured petrol on the van and burned him alive," Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam told newsmen earlier.

Court seeks progress report on arrest warrants against Hasina, Joy by May 12

Apr 29, 2025

A Dhaka court today directed the officers-in-charge of 12 police stations to submit the progress reports -- by May 12 -- on the execution of arrest warrants against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and 16 others in two cases filed over irregularities in plot allocation in Purbachal New Town project.

Judge Md Zakir Hossain of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order after police failed to submit the progress reports before it by today, according to a staffer of the court.

On March 25, the ACC pressed charges against Hasina, Joy and 16 others in these two cases.

On April 15, the same court issued arrest warrants against Hasina, Joy and others after accepting the charges in three cases.

The ACC officials have shown all the accused as fugitives, as they did not secure bail from any court in the country.

The ACC filed six cases over alleged irregularities in the allocation of the six plots, each measuring 10 kathas, in the diplomatic zone of Sector-27 in the Purbachal project. Hasina has been made a common accused in all the six cases filed in connection to the irregularities.

According to the ACC documents, Hasina, in collusion with senior Rajuk officials, had six plots allotted to herself, Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, younger sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, and Rehana's daughters Azmina Siddiq and Tulip Siddiq.

On April 10, the same court issued arrest warrants against 18 people, including Hasina and her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, in one of the six cases over the plot allocation irregularities.

UK bears responsibility for Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood ban

April 28, 2025

IHRC has written to Keir Starmer asking the British PM to review the array of repressive anti-terrorism legislation in the wake of Jordan’s decision last week to ban the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood has been an integral part of Jordan’s political landscape since its founding in 1945. Since its inception, the movement has remained committed to non-violent political engagement, seeking to empower the people of Jordan and the wider region.

Last week the Jordanian government outlawed the organisation under the pretext that it was planning to carry out terrorist attacks inside the country.

The criminalisation of the MB forms part of a wider international campaign, driven by Britain and the US, to delegitimise opposition groups.

In fact over two decades of “thoughtcrime” legislation and policies targeting Muslim political activity in the West have served as a template for foreign governments to repress opposition figures and organisations.

By redefining peaceful political activities as terrorism or non-violent extremism — often to appease Zionist interests and to advance British neo-imperialism — successive governments, beginning with Tony Blair’s first Labour administration, have effectively given the green light for other countries to strip people of their fundamental rights.

The fight against terrorism has increasingly become a pretext for dismantling democratic freedoms such as the right to protest, support liberation movements, and oppose state-sponsored human rights abuses. Under the false guise of protecting the public, our governments have set us on a slippery slope towards authoritarianism.

Since October 7, 2023, state repression has intensified, seeking among other things, to insulate the government from criticism over its complicity in Israel’s genocide against Gaza. Activists, academics, and even ordinary citizens have been intimidated, harassed, and arrested merely for exercising their lawful and democratic right to oppose government policies.

If the United Kingdom wishes to be a credible leader in championing freedom and democracy around the world, it must first end the ongoing erosion of civil liberties at home. Only by restoring and upholding the rights and freedoms of its own citizens can the UK call out abuses abroad with any moral authority. Until then, any claim made by the government about its belief in the rule of law, democracy, and human rights will continue to ring hollow.

Thousands flock to Batley town hall to view rare Islamic artefacts

Abigail Marlow

28 APR 2025

This weekend over 3,500 people gathered at Batley Town Hall for a special exhibition showcasing Islamic artefacts dating back hundreds of years.

At the heart of the exhibition stood the Kiswa - a 29-foot-long cloth made of pure silk, embroidered with Quranic verses in 22-carat gold and silver thread. The Kiswa is used to cover the Kaaba - the sacred, stone structure at the centre of the Great Mosque in Mecca - and is traditionally replaced every year during the Hajj pilgrimage on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah.

Also on display were pieces from the tomb of Prophet Muhammad, relics from inside the Kaaba, the Kaaba’s original lock and key, and ceremonial tools used for its cleansing. Organisers say these items are so rare that even in Mecca and Medina they are not usually accessible to the public.

Operations Manager and Dewsbury resident, Riyaz Maniar, described the exhibition as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” He said: "These artefacts are incredibly significant to the Muslim world. Some of the pieces are from inside the Kaaba and even from the tomb of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) items usually reserved for the Saudi royal family."

The exhibition was made possible by Sheikh Ilyas and was supported by the council’s Community Alliance group for Batley - Cllr Habiban Zaman, Cllr Yusra Hussain, and Cllr Adam Zaman - who contributed from their ward budgets to ensure the exhibition remained free and accessible to the public.

Councillor A Zaman commented: "We are absolutely delighted to have brought this event to Batley. For the first time ever, Batley Town Hall welcomed such a large audience for a spiritually enriching and historically significant occasion."

"The public were truly overwhelmed,” Cllr Hussain added. “Seeing the Kiswa up close, learning about its creation and preservation, and witnessing the tools used in the Kaaba’s cleansing offered our community a powerful opportunity to reflect on Islamic heritage and celebrate unity."

Councillor H Zaman commented: "This exhibition was more than an event — it was a moment of deep emotional and spiritual connection. Witnessing so many people from different walks of life come together in reverence and awe was truly humbling. It reminded us of the importance of preserving our heritage and passing these treasures of faith and history on to future generations."

Sex offenders to be denied asylum rights in new law

April 29 2025

Asylum seekers will be denied the right to stay in the UK if they have been convicted of sexual offences, the government has announced.

Terrorists, war criminals and any other criminals whose offences carry a sentence of one year or more can already be refused asylum under the Refugee Convention.

Under the changes, this will be extended to anyone convicted in the UK of a crime which places them on the sex offenders register, regardless of the length of their sentence.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said this would "ensure these appalling crimes are taken seriously" but the Conservatives said the measures were "too little, too late".

The changes will be introduced through an amendment to the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which is currently making its way through Parliament.

It is not clear how many cases the change could affect.

However, a Home Office source said ministers would be hoping to tackle instances like that of Abdul Ezedi, who was granted asylum despite being a convicted sex offender.

Ezedi killed himself within hours after he was suspected of dousing his ex-girlfriend with a corrosive liquid when he attacked her and her children in south London in January last year.

He was already on the sex offenders register, after pleading guilty to charges of sexual assault and exposure in 2018, when he was granted asylum in 2020 following two failed attempts.

The amendment will also set a 24-week target for appeal decisions on whether asylum seekers who are foreign offenders or are in government-funded accommodation have the right to remain in the UK or not, in a bid to cut the asylum backlog.

The home secretary said: "Sex offenders who pose a risk to the community should not be allowed to benefit from refugee protections in the UK.

"Nor should asylum seekers be stuck in hotels at the taxpayers' expense during lengthy legal battles.

"That is why we are changing the law to help clear the backlog, end the use of asylum hotels and save billions of pounds for the taxpayer."

The Home Office said that harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) for processing asylum claims could also save up to an hour per case by summarising interview transcripts and accessing country advice.

A range of measures to reform the asylum system are being introduced, including new powers for the Immigration Advice Authority to issue fines of up to £15,000 for anyone involved in advising fraudulent claims or posing as an immigration lawyer who is not registered.

There will also be restrictions on foreign offenders living in the community, including mandatory electronic tags, strict night-time curfews and enforced exclusion zones.

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, welcomed efforts to resolve asylum cases quickly, but warned the use of AI could "backfire" if it produced flawed decisions that end up in the courts.

The Law Society of England and Wales also raised concerns that the target for appeal decisions would be "unworkable" in practice as the justice system is already struggling to cope with current demand.

Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said the action would complement the government's pledge to halve violence against women and girls in a decade.

But Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the legislation was "too little, too late" and highlighted how a record 10,000 people had crossed the Channel this year already.

"Foreign criminals pose a danger to British citizens and must be removed, but so often this is frustrated by spurious legal claims based on human rights claims, not asylum claims," he said.

"The Conservatives had already tabled tough, clear reforms to remove all foreign criminals and to disapply the Human Rights Act so activists and lawyers cannot block deportations.

"But Labour voted against our measures - they are not serious about controlling our borders."

Suspect in killing worshipper at mosque south France surrenders to Italian police

28 Apr 2025

French authorities announced Monday that the suspect in a stabbing at a mosque in France surrendered to Italian police late Sunday night.

The public prosecutor in the southeastern French city of Alès said, according to Agence France-Presse, "The suspect in the killing of young Aboubacar Cissé on Friday, April 25, inside a mosque in the Logard region of southeastern France, surrendered himself to Italian police in the city of Pistoia around 11 p.m. Sunday."

The public prosecutor said, "It is a great pleasure for me as a prosecutor. Given the effectiveness of the measures put in place, the suspect saw no other option but to surrender, and this was the best step he could have taken."

Grini added, "The official information released about the suspect, who filmed the murder himself, was scant. He is a young man named Olivier A., from a Bosnian family, unemployed, and has family connections in the Logard region." "This person remained under the radar of the justice system and the police, and had not attracted any attention before this tragic incident," Abdelkrim Gueni continued.

A white march took place in the town of La Grande-Combe on Sunday in memory of the victim, Aboubacar Cissé, a young Malian man in his twenties. More than a thousand people participated between the Khadija Mosque, where the incident occurred, and the town hall of this small town of 5,000 people north of Alès.

Hundreds of people also gathered late in the evening in Paris, including Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the France Insoumise movement, who accused Interior Minister Bruno Retaylor of fostering a "climate of Islamophobia."

President Emmanuel Macron stressed that "discrimination and hatred based on religion will never have a place in France," offering "the nation's support" to the victim's family and "our Muslim compatriots."

France tries Syrian Islamist rebel ex-spokesman on war crime charges

April 29, 2025

PARIS: A Syrian Islamist rebel ex-spokesman is to go on trial in France on Tuesday under the principle of universal jurisdiction, accused of complicity in war crimes during Syria’s civil war.

French authorities arrested Majdi Nema, now 36, in the southern city of Marseille in 2020, after he traveled to the country on a student exchange program.

He was detained and charged under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows states to prosecute suspects accused of serious crimes regardless of where they were committed.

This is the first time that crimes committed in Syria’s civil war have been tried in France under the universal jurisdiction.

Nema – better known by his nom-de-guerre of Islam Alloush – has been charged with complicity in war crimes between 2013 and 2016, when he was spokesman for a Syrian Islamist rebel group called Jaish Al-Islam.

However, Nema has said he only had a “limited role” in the armed opposition group that held sway in the rebel-held suburbs of Damascus during that period.

Jaish Al-Islam was one of the main opposition groups fighting Bashar Assad’s government before Islamist-led fighters toppled him in December but it has also been accused of terrorizing civilians in areas it controlled.

Nema, who faces up to 20 years in jail if found guilty, has in particular been accused of helping recruit children and teenagers to fight for the group.

His arrest came after rights groups, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), filed a criminal complaint in France in 2019 against members of Jaish Al-Islam for their alleged crimes.

It was the FIDH that discovered Nema was in France during research into Jaish Al-Islam’s hierarchy and informed the French authorities.

Marc Bailly, a lawyer for the FIDH and some civil parties in the trial that runs to May 27, said the case would be “the opportunity to shed light on all the complexity of the Syrian conflict, which did not just involve regime crimes.”

Born in 1988, Nema was a captain in the Syrian armed forces before defecting in 2012 and joining the group that would in 2013 become known as Jaish Al-Islam.

He told investigators that he left Eastern Ghouta in May 2013 and crossed the border to Turkiye, where he worked as the group’s spokesman, before leaving the group in 2016.

He has cited his presence in Turkiye as part of his defense.

Nema traveled to France in November 2019 under a university exchange program and was arrested in January 2020.

The defendant was initially indicted for complicity in the enforced disappearances of four activists in Eastern Ghouta in late 2013 – including prominent rights defender Razan Zaitouneh – but those charges have since been dropped on procedural grounds.

Jaish Al-Islam has been accused of involvement in the abduction, though it has denied this.

France has since 2010 been able to try cases under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which argues some crimes are so serious that all states have the obligation to prosecute offenders.

The country’s highest court upheld this principle in 2023, allowing for the investigation into Nema to continue.

A previous trial in May of Syrians charged over their actions in the war took place because French nationals were the victims, rather than under the principle of universal jurisdiction.

A Paris court in that trial ordered life sentences for three top Syrian security officials linked to the former Assad government for their role in the torture and disappearance of a French-Syrian father and son in Syria in 2013.

They were tried in absentia.

Syria’s conflict has killed more than half a million people and displaced millions more from their homes since it erupted in 2011 with a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests.

Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo near ‘significant breakthrough,’ two security sources say

April 29, 2025

CAIRO: Negotiations held in Cairo to reach a ceasefire in Gaza were on the verge of a "significant breakthrough," two Egyptian security sources told Reuters on Monday.

There was no immediate comment from Israel and Hamas. Axios reporter Barak Ravid said in a brief post on X that an Israeli official denied the reported breakthrough, without giving further details.

The Egyptian sources said there was a consensus on a long-term ceasefire in the besieged enclave, yet some sticking points remain, including Hamas arms.

Hamas repeatedly said it was not willing to lay down its arms, a key demand by Israel.

Earlier, Egyptian state-affiliated Al Qahera News TV reported that Egyptian intelligence chief General Hassan Mahmoud Rashad was set to meet an Israeli delegation headed by strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer on Monday in Cairo.

The sources said the ongoing talks included Egyptian and Israeli delegations.

Mediators Egypt and Qatar did not report developments on the latest talks. Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said on Sunday that a recent meeting in Doha on efforts to reach a ceasefire made some progress, but noted there was no agreement yet on how to end the war. He said the militant group is willing to return all remaining Israeli hostages if Israel ends the war in Gaza. But Israel wants Hamas to release the remaining hostages without offering a clear vision on ending the war, he added. The media adviser for the Hamas leadership, Taher Al-Nono, told Reuters on Saturday that the group was open to a years-long truce with Israel in Gaza, adding that the group hoped to build support among mediators for its offer.

Speaking at a conference in Jerusalem on Monday night, before Reuters reported that there had been progress in the talks, Dermer said the government remained committed to dismantling Hamas' military capability, ending its rule in Gaza, ensuring that the enclave never again poses a threat to Israel and returning the hostages.

Israel resumed its offensive in Gaza on March 18 after a January ceasefire collapsed, saying it would keep up pressure on Hamas until it frees the remaining hostages still held in the enclave. Up to 24 of them are believed to be still alive.

The Gaza war started after Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack which killed 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel's offensive on the enclave killed more than 52,000, according to local Palestinian health officials.

US lost seven multi-million-dollar drones in Yemen area since March

April 29, 2025

WASHINGTON: The United States has lost seven multi-million-dollar MQ-9 Reaper drones in the Yemen area since March 15, a US official said Monday, as the Navy announced a costly warplane fell off an aircraft carrier into the Red Sea.

Washington launched the latest round of its air campaign against Yemen’s Houthis in mid-March, and MQ-9s can be used for both reconnaissance — a key aspect of US efforts to identify and target weaponry the rebels are using to attack shipping in the region — as well as strikes.

“There have been seven MQ-9s that have gone down since March 15,” the US official said on condition of anonymity, without specifying what caused the loss of the drones, which cost around $30 million apiece.

The US Navy meanwhile announced the loss of another piece of expensive military equipment: an F/A-18E warplane that fell off the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in an accident that injured one sailor.

A tractor that was towing the F/A-18E — a type of aircraft that cost more than $67 million in 2021 — also slipped off the ship into the sea.

“The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard,” the Navy said in a statement.

The carrier and its other planes remain in action and the incident is under investigation, the Navy added. No details of recovery work were released.

It is the second F/A-18 operating off the Truman to be lost in less than six months, after another was mistakenly shot down by the USS Gettysburg guided missile cruiser late last year in incident that both pilots survived.

The Truman is one of two US aircraft carriers operating in the Middle East, where US forces have been striking the Houthis on a near-daily basis since March 15.

The military’s Central Command said Sunday that US forces have struck more than 800 targets and killed hundreds of Houthi fighters, including members of the group’s leadership, as part of the operation.

The Iran-backed Houthis began targeting shipping in late 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has been devastated by a military campaign launched by Israel after a shock Hamas attack in October of that year.

Houthi attacks have prevented ships from passing through the Suez Canal — a vital route that normally carries about 12 percent of the world’s shipping traffic — forcing many companies into a costly detour around the tip of southern Africa.

The United States first began conducting strikes against the Houthis under the Biden administration, and President Donald Trump has vowed that military action against the rebels will continue until they are no longer a threat to shipping.

Hezbollah leader calls on government to work harder to end Israel’s attacks on Lebanon

April 28, 2025

BEIRUT: The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah group called on the government Monday to work harder to end Israel’s attacks in the country a day after an Israeli airstrike hit a suburb of Beirut.

Naim Kassem said in a televised speech that Hezbollah implemented the ceasefire deal that ended the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war in late November. But despite that, Israel is continuing with near-daily airstrikes.

Kassem’s comments came as the Israeli military said it carried out more than 50 strikes in Lebanon this month saying they came after Hezbollah violated the US-brokered ceasefire.

On Sunday, Israeli warplanes struck Beirut’s southern suburbs after issuing a warning about an hour earlier, marking the third Israeli strike on the area since a ceasefire took effect in late November. The Israeli military said it struck a precision-guided missiles facility.

“The resistance complied 100 percent with the (ceasefire) deal and I tell state officials that it’s your duty to guarantee protection,” Kassem said, adding that Lebanese officials should contact sponsors of the ceasefire so that they pressure Israel to cease its attacks.

“Put pressure on America and make it understand that Lebanon cannot rise if the aggression doesn’t stop,” Kassem said, pointing to Lebanese officials. He added that the US has interests in Lebanon and “stability achieves these interests.”

Kassem said the priority should be for an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, an end to Israeli strikes in the country and the release of Lebanese held in Israel since the war that ended on Nov. 27.

Hezbollah began launching rockets, drones and missiles into Israel the day after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by its Hamas allies ignited the Israel-Hamas war. Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel and abducted 251 others during the 2023 attack.

The Israel-Hezbollah conflict exploded into all-out war last September when Israel carried out waves of airstrikes and killed most of the militant group’s senior leaders. The fighting killed over 4,000 people.

The Lebanese government said earlier this month that 190 people have been killed and 485 injured in Lebanon by Israeli strikes since the ceasefire took effect.

Iran condemns US airstrikes on various areas of Yemen

Apr 28, 2025

Esmaeil Baghaei strongly condemned last night's US attacks on various areas of Yemen, including a detention center for African immigrants located in Saada province, which resulted in the killing and injury of more than 100 innocent people.

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman described the continued US military attacks on civilian targets, vital infrastructures, and people's homes in various parts of Yemen, which have killed hundreds of innocent people, as a war crime, and lashed out at the silence and indifference of the United Nations and human rights institutions towards this blatant violation of the law and repeated violations of Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Referring to the Zionist regime's continued genocide in the occupied territories and its aggression against Lebanon, Baghaei considered the US military aggression against Yemen as the criminal Israeli regime’s malicious plan to destroy and weaken Islamic countries and destabilize the entire West Asian region.

He called on all Islamic countries to adopt effective measures to stop the killing of the Muslim people of Yemen by the criminal Israeli regime and to prevent the continuation of genocide in Gaza and the West Bank.

Over 70 terrorists neutralised in 3-day operations along Pak-Afghan border

By Waqar Satti

April 28, 2025

In a series of operations from April 25 to 27, Pakistani forces killed 71 terrorists, including militants with links to Indian interests, near the Pak-Afghan border, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Monday.

The military's media wing said that the security forces conducted a deliberate sanitisation operation in surrounding areas of Hassan Khel, North Waziristan District (NWD), along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, on the night of April 27-28.

The terrorist death toll comes after the successful engagements by the security forces in NWD from April 25-27, during which 54 khwarij were sent to hell. The security forces had foiled terrorists' infiltration attempt into Pakistan from Afghanistan and killed at least 54 of them.

During the conduct of the operation on the following night, 17 more khwarij, who were "operating at the behest of their Indian masters, were hunted down and successfully neutralised", the military's media wing said in a brief statement.

It further stated that weapons, ammunition and explosives were also recovered from the killed khwarij. The number of khwarij killed in three days anti inflation operation has risen to 71, it added.

"The security forces remain committed to secure the nation’s frontiers and thwart attempts at sabotaging peace, stability and progress of Pakistan," the ISPR statement read.

In an earlier statement, the ISPR said that such actions by terrorists, at a time when India is levelling baseless accusations against Pakistan, clearly imply on whose cues they are operating. "Such actions amount to treason and betrayal against the state and its citizens."

Referring to the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, the ISPR said it underscored the fact that distracting Pakistan’s security forces from their focus on the war against terror seems to be the strategic intent of India to allow a breathing space to terrorists "which is reeling from the onslaught of our armed forces resolute offensive against them".

The statement noted that this was the highest-ever number of terrorists killed by the security forces in a single engagement during entire campaign against terrorism.

Fitna Al Khawarij is a term the state uses to refer to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is reportedly launching attacks on the country from Afghan soil.

The two nations share a porous border spanning around 2,500 kilometres with several crossing points which hold significance as a key element of regional trade and relations between the people across both sides of the fence.

However, the issue of terrorism remains a key issue for Pakistan which has urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used by groups such as the TTP to carry out attacks inside the former’s territory.

Islamabad’s reservations have also been confirmed by a report submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, which has revealed a nexus between Kabul and the TTP with the former providing logistical, operational and financial support to the latter.

Earlier this month, at least eight terrorists were neutralised as security forces successfully thwarted their bid to infiltrate through the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan district.

The country witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in January 2025, surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.

The data revealed that at least 74 militant attacks were recorded nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, including 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.

PTI wants govt to convene APC on Indian threats

By Nausheen Yusuf

April 28, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) — the main opposition party in the country — on Monday called on the federal government to convene an All Parties Conference (APC) in the backdrop of recent threats issued by the Narendra Modi-led Indian government, sending a strong message of political unity on national issues.

Speaking about the Pahalgam attack in the Senate session today, PTI Senator Barrister Syed Ali Zafar said: “People know the script of Modi's drama very well.” He said that the Indian government could not suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) unilaterally.

Terming the Indian allegations on Pakistan in connection with the Pahalgam attack, wherein 26 people were killed, “baseless”, the PTI leader said that PM Modi was leading India towards destruction.

The April 22 attack claimed the lives of 26 people — including one Nepali national — and India's government blames Pakistan for the attack, a claim that Islamabad vehemently denied and also termed as a "false flag operation".

“If the Modi-led government diverts even a drop of Pakistan's water, it will be considered as an enemy attack,” warned the PTI leader.

His remarks come in response to India's unilateral decision to suspend the six-decade-old Indus Waters Treaty and also taking other steps against Pakistan in the aftermath of an attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

For his part, Leader of the Opposition in Senate Senator Shibli Faraz said: "We are united when it comes to defending Pakistan."

Taking the floor, Faraz emphasised national unity and said that the country was grappling with both internal and external issues.

Berating New Delhi, the PTI leader said that India has made every effort to break Pakistan and continues to build an anti-Pakistan narrative.

He said that they could not take the water threat by India as a “political statement” and termed the move as an act of war.

The PTI leader said that the enemy planning a lethal attack on Pakistan.

Earlier, Senator Irfan Siddiqui said that the international community has rejected India's false claims and propaganda against Pakistan following the Pahalgam incident.

"The world did not support India's stance or its fabrications. Their propaganda has been exposed," he said while speaking on the Senate floor.

He maintained that India hastily blamed Pakistan without any credible evidence, noting that the FIR for the attack was registered immediately and accusations were leveled even before any investigation.

He questioned how attackers could cross the heavily fenced Line of Control (LoC) and pointed out that India’s investigative agency was only tasked to trace the culprits after blame had already been levelled. "It appears the FIR was lodged first and the incident happened later," Siddiqui remarked.

Senator Irfan castigated India for unilaterally withdrawing from the Indus Waters Treaty, saying that it is an internationally recognised agreement backed by the World Bank.

"No country can unilaterally withdraw from the treaty. You cannot turn Pakistan into Karbala by cutting off its water," he warned.

Pakistan Is ‘Prepared For Anything’ India Might Try: Khawaja Asif

April 29, 2025

ISLAMABAD: As friends in foreign capitals continue to advocate for a de-escalation of tensions in South Asia, Pakistan’s defence minister said the country was ready for any incursion by India.

The two neighbours have been trading fire across the Line of Control (LoC) for four days now, with each blaming the other for provocation.

“We have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. So in that situation some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been taken,” Khawaja Asif told Reuters on Monday.

He said the military had briefed the government on the possibility of an Indian attack, but did not go into further details on his reasons for thinking an incursion was imminent.

His remarks follow New Delhi’s increasingly aggressive posturing following an attack in a tourist resort in India-held Kashmir, which claimed over two dozen lives.

Immediately after the Pahalgam attack, India claimed two of the suspects were from Pakistan, albeit without proof. Islamabad has flatly denied any role and called for a neutral investigation.

In the interview, Mr Asif said Pakistan was on high alert and that it would only use its arsenal of nuclear weapons if “there is a direct threat to our existence”.

Later, in an interview with Samaa TV, he said, “We should be mentally prepared, there is a war looming on the horizon.”

The channel also quoted him as saying that there was a “vivid possibility” that “we can have war in the next day or two or three or four (sic)”.

However, he later had to clarify these remarks, telling Geo News: “They (the channel) asked me what the chances of war are, so I said that the next two to three days were crucial.”

“If something has to happen, then it will occur in the next two to four days … otherwise the immediate danger will pass.”

Mr Asif also clarified that his statement should not be misconstrued as a categorical prediction that war would begin within the next two to three days, reiterating that he had only said the “upcoming days would be crucial.”

He reiterated that he had said there was a danger of war breaking out in the next few days but it could also be averted, as other countries in the region were working to avert any contentious situation and de-escalate the matter.

He said that Islamabad had approached friendly countries, including Gulf states and China, and also briefed Britain, the United States and others on the situation.

“Some of our friends in the Arabian Gulf have talked to both sides,” Asif said, without naming the countries.

Over the past week, leaders and officials from China, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the UK have been in touch with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy PM Ishaq Dar. All of them have urged a de-escalation of tensions.

De-escalation

Meanwhile on Monday, Beijing, Washington, Ankara and Doha also expressed the hope that India and Pakistan will exercise restraint and welcomed all measures that will help cool down the situation.

“China hopes that the two sides will exercise restraint, meet each other halfway, properly handle relevant differences through dialogue and consultation and jointly maintain regional peace and stability,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.

“China welcomes all measures that will help cool down the situation,” AFP quoted Jiakun as telling a regular press briefing.

Beijing’s call for restraint added to the United States’ statement from Sunday, urging India and Pakistan to work towards what it called a “responsible solution”, as Washington said it was in touch with both countries.

“This is an evolving situation and we are monitoring developments closely. We have been in touch with the governments of India and Pakistan at multiple levels,” a US State Department spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.

“The United States encourages all parties to work together towards a responsible resolution,” the spokesperson added.

In public, the US government has expressed support for India after the attack but has not criticised Pakistan, while President Trump said last week he was confident that both countries would “get it figured out”.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting on Monday, Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country also wants a de-escalation between Pakistan and India, Reuters reported.

Separately, speaking to Mr Dar, who also holds the foreign affairs portfolio, Qatar’s prime minister emphasised the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

Dar spoke with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani as part of Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach to inform allies about what Islamabad describes as India’s “unsubstantiated allegations, inflammatory rhetoric, and unilateral measures,” according to a statement from the Foreign Office.

During the conversation, Al-Thani underscored the imperative of maintaining regional peace and stability, highlighting the value of diplomatic engagement in addressing disputes between countries.

Both leaders reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties between Pakistan and Qatar and agreed to maintain close coordination and consultations on the evolving regional situation.

Amid India tensions, PTI wants Imran’s voice heard

Iftikhar A. Khan

April 29, 2025

• Ali Zafar says such a gesture of political unity will strengthen Pakistan’s case globally

• Irfan Siddiqui calls Pahalgam attack ‘false-flag operation’

• Senators warn New Delhi against changes to Indus treaty

ISLAMABAD: The main opposition, PTI, has demanded the release of its incarcerated leader Imran Khan so he can participate in national deliberations on escalating tensions with India in the wake of the Pahalgam attack.

The party also called for an immediate multi-party conference (MPC), with Mr Khan in attendance.

The demands were made in the Senate on Monday, as lawmakers from both sides of the aisle slammed India for suspending the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and fanning war hysteria following the April 22 attack.

Senator Ali Zafar, PTI’s parliamentary leader in the Senate, said political differences should be set aside for an issue of national importance.

He noted that a multi-party conference was the only “correct thing to do in the present circumstances”.

If Mr Khan is allowed to attend such a meeting, Mr Zafar said it would send a signal across the world that Pakistan is united and make the country’s case stronger.

He also criticised Indian PM Narendra Modi’s government and its “Nazi mentality” for falsely accusing Pakistan — which is itself a victim of terrorism.

“I want to tell the world that this is a blatant and baseless lie motivated by malice.”

He added New Delhi has a “habit of levelling such allegations” and also called the Indian government an “expert in carrying out false flag operations”.

PTI Senator Shibli Faraz said Mr Khan should be allowed to appear on TV to give a call to people for a public gathering at Minar-i-Pakistan and a march toward the Wagah border with India.

Mr Faraz, the opposition leader in Senate, expressed confidence that “over ten million people” will gather on Mr Khan’s call.

“Only a true representative of the people can give a strong message to India,” he said, warning the enemy “takes advantage of political instability”.

He demanded the release of all “political prisoners” and doing away with the practice of filing false cases against political opponents.

’False-flag operation ’

PML-N Senator Irfanul Haq Siddiqui said the Pahalgam incident was a “false flag operation carried out by the Indian authorities to defame Pakistan”.

He said India routinely accused Pakistan without any investigation or evidence. “India accused Pakistan within minutes of the Pahalgam incident, but the international community refused to accept their false narrative.”

Senator Siddiqui also raised critical questions about the security situation in India-held Kashmir.

He questioned how a major terrorist attack took place despite the “presence of army checkpoints at every corner and the deployment of one Indian soldier for every seven Kashmiris”.

Mr Siddiqui warned India against carrying out any attack in Pakistan, saying the people were “fully prepared and united to defend the motherland” despite internal political differences.

The PML-N senator also referred to growing internal dissent within India, noting that voices from within the country were now questioning PM Modi’s handling of the situation.

The BAP parliamentary leader in the Senate said the Pahalgam attack, which took place in an area with high military presence “clearly exposed that it was a false flag operation”.

He said India was involved in target killings in different countries and was responsible for various terrorist attacks inside Pakistan and there was “irrefutable evidence” of Indian funding to outlawed groups BLA and TTP.

Suspension of IWT

Talking about India’s move to suspend the IWT, Mr Siddiqui said New Delhi cannot unilaterally terminate the agreement.

“The Indus Waters Treaty involves the World Bank as an arbitrator along with several other international institutions. India cannot simply walk away from its obligations,” he stressed.

Senator Zafar of PTI also agreed with Mr Siddiqui saying that India has no right to unilaterally suspend, amend or cancel the treaty.

Mr Zafar, who is also a constitutional expert, said any such action by the Modi government will be “illegal and against the principles of international law”.

He said the announcement by India to suspend the treaty had no legal effect and Pakistan has rejected it.

Calling water a “basic human right”, he warned India that any disruption to the water flows of Pakistan would be “an act of war”.

“We will fight for each drop of water till the last drop of our blood.”

Siraj flays federal, KP govts for ‘failing’ to curb terrorism

April 29, 2025

LOWER DIR: Former Jamaat-i-Islami chief Sirajul Haq on Monday flayed the federal and provincial governments for what he said failing to curb terrorism and targeted killing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing a condolence gathering in Munda after the killing of retired army soldier Haji Abdul Zaiq, 72, who was gunned down by unknown attackers on Friday night, Mr Haq declared that the government had lost the public’s trust and should resign if it could not ensure citizens’ protection.

He blamed growing differences between Islamabad and Peshawar for the worsening law and order situation in the province, saying the province had been turned into ‘a living hell’ for its people.

“If the government cannot protect the citizens, it has no right to rule over them,” he asserted, adding that if immediate steps were not taken to restore peace, the people would rise and hold the rulers accountable.

Mr Haq urged security agencies to trace and eliminate terrorists, warning that the people would no longer tolerate continued violence and insecurity.

Meanwhile, district development advisory committee chairman Ubaidur Rehman also visited the residence of martyred army soldier and met with his family members and children.

He offered prayers for the elevation of the martyr’s ranks and expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family.

Mr Rehman also pledged to participate in public protests against the incident and to raise the voice for the martyr’s family at every platform.

Also on Monday, volunteers of Islami Qaumi Ittehad Aqwam Jandol, a local organisation, condemned the targeted killing of the army trooper, and expressed concern about the deteriorating law and order situation in Jandol area.

Addressing the participants of a protest demonstration in Mayar, they said several prominent figures had been targeted in the recent months, but police had failed to identify or arrest the culprits.

PHC puts police on notice over missing Imam

April 29, 2025

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has issued a notice to the police after relevant agencies submitted their responses to a petition seeking the recovery of Hazrat Umar, a mosque imam, who vanished without a trace from outside Mardan Jail.

Acting Chief Justice SM Attique Shah, presiding over a single-member bench, heard the case.

At the outset of the hearing, the missing Imam's father, the petitioner's counsel, and the Additional Advocate General appeared before the court. The father informed the bench that his son had been abducted immediately after his release from Mardan Jail.

Despite approaching the concerned police officials in Charsadda, no action had been taken, he said.

In response, the chief justice directed the concerned Station House Officer (SHO) and Investigating Officer (IO) to appear before the court. The Additional Advocate General informed the bench that cases had previously been registered against Hazrat Umar.

However, the father clarified that his son had already been acquitted of all charges and was abducted only after his release.

The chief justice inquired about the missing man's occupation and the petitioner's family. The father explained that his son was a religious scholar and Imam of a mosque, and that he (the petitioner) had six sons and five daughters.

Upon hearing this, the chief justice remarked, "Why haven't your other children been abducted?" The father revealed that another of his son, a 17-year-old student, had also been abducted from a madrassa in Sardheri.

When asked whether a petition had been filed regarding the second son, the petitioner confirmed that it had, but no information had been provided yet.

He also shared that the missing sons had young children who repeatedly asked about their fathers' return.

The chief justice noted that reports from federal and provincial agencies had been received, all denying custody of the missing individuals.

Hajj Without Permit Is A Sin, Says Saudi Arabia’s Top Religious Authority

April 29, 2025

Dubai: Saudi Arabia’s Council of Senior Scholars has reaffirmed that performing the annual Hajj pilgrimage without an official permit is considered a sinful act under Islamic law, emphasizing that obtaining a permit is a mandatory requirement for all individuals intending to perform Hajj.

Sheikh Fahd Al Majed, Secretary General of the Council, stated that the fatwa is based on Shariah evidence and principles, particularly Islamic teachings that prioritise easing religious obligations and minimizing hardship for worshippers.

He noted that the permit system is designed to regulate the massive number of pilgrims, ensuring they can perform their rituals in safety and peace, a recognized objective in Islamic law.

Sheikh Al Majed stressed that requiring a permit serves the public interest, as government entities plan security, health services, accommodation, and logistics for the Hajj season based on the authorised number of pilgrims.

Matching the actual number of pilgrims to authorised limits enhances the quality and safety of services, aligning with Shariah principles.

He also emphasised that adhering to the permit requirement constitutes obedience to the legitimate authority, citing the Quranic verse: "O believers! Obey God and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you."

The Council of Senior Scholars urged all pilgrims to comply with the permit requirement, warning that noncompliance could lead to significant risks, including threats to health and safety, a decline in service quality, and disruption of transportation and crowd management plans between the holy sites.

The council further clarified that performing Hajj without a permit not only harms the individual pilgrim but also negatively affects others who follow the regulations. Islamic law regards harm that extends to others as more severe than harm limited to oneself.

Turning a dream into reality: retired Saudi teacher copies Qur’an by hand in inspiring journey

TAREQ AL-THAQAFI

April 28, 2025

MAKKAH: In an era of rapid technological change and evolving traditions, some individuals still embody steadfast devotion to craftsmanship and the quiet power of creativity.

Among them is retired teacher Khaled Al-Zahrani, who turned his retirement into a journey of fulfillment by realizing a dream he had cherished since his college days — copying the entire Holy Qur’an by hand in his own script.

Al-Zahrani, who is nearly 60, has a lifelong passion for Arabic calligraphy, especially the naskh and ruq’ah scripts. He had dreamed of hand-copying the Holy Qur’an since his university days. However, the demands of work and daily life postponed his ambition until retirement gave him the opportunity to finally turn his dream into reality.

He explained that his journey truly began when a friend introduced him to the Qur’an by Hand initiative, which provides blank copies of the Qur’an for personal transcription. Inspired, he purchased two copies and embarked on his endeavor.

Al-Zahrani shared with Arab News that the experience was both demanding and humbling, requiring exceptional precision and unwavering concentration, as copying the Qur’an allowed no margin for error.

He carefully transcribed around two or two-and-a-half pages each day, meticulously counting the letters to ensure a balanced layout and to avoid omitting any verses.

He began with Surah Al-Zalzalah as a test of his abilities and, upon completing it, he gained the confidence to move forward, despite the profound sense of awe he felt when starting the lengthy Surah Al-Baqarah.

Al-Zahrani said that he relied on a standard half-millimeter pen and used an eraser or a fine needle to make corrections when needed, although he was meticulous to minimize errors as much as possible.

He explained that he had to devote himself fully to this work, so he decided to seclude himself in his home for six months — avoiding all distractions and social visits — so that he could finish writing the Holy Qur’an in conditions that would help him concentrate and achieve his goal.

Al-Zahrani said that his project remained out of the public eye until a relative filmed him writing and posted the video in a family WhatsApp group. The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread admiration and attention.

He added that while he received numerous requests for media interviews, he chose to delay them until he had fully completed the Qur’an, emphasizing that a task of such significance required unwavering focus and could not afford any distractions.

Al-Zahrani said that his transcription of the Qur’an was far more than an artistic pursuit or personal project: It was a profound spiritual journey that drew him into deep contemplation of God’s verses and their meanings. Every letter he penned resonated within him, as if he were living and interacting with the words themselves.

He explained that the experience strengthened his bond with the Qur’an, deepening his connection to its message while instilling a profound sense of responsibility toward the sanctity of the words he transcribed.

He also expressed the hope that his work would inspire younger generations to reconnect with the art of Arabic calligraphy, not simply as an aesthetic pursuit but as a powerful means of drawing closer to and honoring the Qur’an.

Al-Zahrani believes that his experience taught him profound lessons in patience and perseverance, calling it one of the most meaningful chapters of his life.

He expressed hope that his story would inspire others with long-delayed dreams to take the first step toward realizing them, no matter how late it may seem, proving that with sincere determination, dreams can indeed become reality.

Innovators discuss future of STEM at Riyadh summit

LAMA ALHAMAWI

April 28, 2025

RIYADH: Innovators in science, technology, engineering and mathematics from Saudi Arabia and around the world gathered in Riyadh on Monday for the Eye on the Future Summit, which aimed to share insights and discuss the future of STEM.

“Today’s gathering is a celebration of talent, creativity, and vision,” Lidia Arthur Brito UNESCO assistant director general for natural sciences, said.

“The scientists, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow are here with us today, and it is our duty to ensure they are equipped with all the tools, opportunities, and inspiration they need to address the complex challenges of our world,” she said.

The event was hosted in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, known as Mawhiba, the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, the Abdullah Al-Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in STEM, the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and the Ministry of Culture.

Brito praised Mawhiba’s efforts in supporting the next generation of innovators in STEM, concluding: “Let us continue working together to nurture a generation of scientists who will not only imagine the future but lead it.”

The session “From the stars to STEM” featured prominent speakers, including Prince Sultan bin Salman, special advisor to King Salman, who delivered the keynote on empowering Saudi youth.

Prince Sultan delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing valuable life and career lessons, including the importance of listening to one’s parents, staying connected to nature, preserving Saudi identity, and valuing continuous education.

He reflected on his years with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage since 2000, highlighting the generosity and unmatched hospitality of Saudi Arabia.

“Everyone comes to Saudi Arabia today to find their way, to learn things to enjoy life. They will not come to a better people who are more hospitable and generous, and I have heard that from all the people who have come to Saudi Arabia,” Prince Sultan said.

Following his remarks, the panel sessions began, featuring a distinguished lineup of local and international pioneers, innovators, and supporters in STEM, including Dr. Majd Abdulghani, a genomics lead at Lean Business Services and deputy national secretary for the Rhodes Scholarship in Saudi Arabia.

Abdulghani was also the first Saudi to receive a Rhodes Scholarship, and is dedicated to promoting the integration of genomic data into personalized, preventive healthcare in Saudi Arabia.

During the summit, she spoke about youth empowerment in STEM, emphasizing her mission to raise awareness of the opportunities available to Saudi youth in the field. “What I am focused on is trying to avoid missed opportunities,” she said.

The summit featured an memorandum of understanding signing between Mawhiba and Abdullah Al-Fozan Foundation for Education, which aims to continue support in providing access to STEM studies for the youth in Saudi Arabia.

During a visit to Mawhiba’s headquarters ahead of the event, Brito praised the foundation’s efforts to discover and nurture talented individuals in scientific fields.

“I think what unites UNESCO and Mawhiba is the true belief that STEM is very important for young people because it equips them with scientific knowledge, but also with critical thinking,” Brito said.

CAIR Calls for Expulsion of Israeli Terrorist Ben-Gvir After He Directs Security Detail to Harass Palestinian Woman Lobbying Capitol Hill in DC

April 28, 2025

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for the expulsion from the U.S. of Itamar Ben-Gvir, a convicted terrorist supporter and far-right Israeli government official, after he allegedly directed a member of his security detail to harass a woman wearing a keffiyeh while visiting Capitol Hill to participate in today’s U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations’ (USCMO) 10th Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Ben-Gvir and his security guards later crossed paths with students and members of the Maryland delegation and CAIR national staff, who called him a “war criminal” while he screamed at them and attempted to push through his security guards to approach them. Ben-Gvir later entered the office of a member of Congress.

In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert S. McCaw said:

“We strongly condemn Itamar Ben-Gvir and his security detail for their attempts to intimidate a Palestinian-American woman on Capitol Hill simply because she was wearing an ancient symbol of Palestinian culture. Ben-Gvir is a racist, a war criminal and a coward who should be in The Hague, not wandering the halls of Congress and harassing Americans.

“He and his far-right government have caused the death and injury of more than 52,000 Palestinians in Gaza – mostly women and children – and has forcibly starved and ethnically cleansed almost the entire population.

“We call on members of Congress to refuse to engage with him, and we call on the United States to expel him. It makes no sense for this war criminal to have free rein to harass Americans while college students who peacefully protested his war crimes are sitting in immigration jails.”

Sabrene Odeh, community legal advocate with CAIR-Washington, was wearing a keffiyeh and standing in the hallway of the Rayburn Building when Ben-Gvir approached with a group of aides and security guards. According to Odeh and a witness, CAIR-Washington communications director Katie Walker, Ben-Gvir looked at Odeh and then motioned for his security guard to take notice of her. The guard then walked fast directly towards Odeh as if he was going to physically assault her, forcing her to step back and hit the wall. The guard then passed inches from Odeh.

Walker added, “I thought he was going to hit her or grab her keffiyeh.”

In a statement, Sabrene Odeh said:

“When visiting Palestine, I’ve been around Israeli soldiers, but it was different to see a war criminal walking in our halls of Congress. If Itamar Ben-Gvir and his thugs think they can intimidate Americans visiting Congress, they are mistaken. This is the United States, not Israeli-occupied territory. Approaching and attempting to intimidate me or anyone else for wearing a sign of Palestinian culture is a racist act of harassment that should be unacceptable in our nation.”

Last week, CAIR called on “people and institutions of conscience” across America to refuse to engage with Ben-Gvir, who has called for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza and the destruction of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

In a meeting with GOP and business leaders on at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, Ben-Gvir claimed that Republicans back his call for bombing food and humanitarian aid supplies in Gaza.

For years, Ben-Gvir infamously kept a photo in his living room of Baruch Goldstein, the Israeli-American who massacred 29 Muslim worshipers at the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron in 1994. Ben-Gvir also threatened Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin weeks before his assassination by an Israeli extremist.

CAIR previously demanded that the Biden administration condemn Ben Gvir’s call for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR has also condemned Ben Gvir’s past calls to violate international agreements and the sanctity of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, one of Islam’s holiest sites.

Over the weekend, CAIR called on the New York Police Department (NYPD) to pursue hate crime charges against members of a pro-Israel mob gathered for Ben-Gvir’s visit to that city and seen in a video posted online chasing and attacking a woman they thought was an Arab-American while shouting slurs like “death to Arabs” and making threats of rape.

CAIR Calls for Probe of Nebraska TA’s Islamophobic Harassment of Muslim Students

April 28, 2025

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for an investigation of alleged Islamophobic harassment of Muslim students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln by a teaching assistant.

Video reportedly shows the teaching assistant insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, falsely claiming the students “worship the prophet Muhammed” and stating, “until you stop doing that, the true god, Jesus, will let your people die.” The alleged harassment reportedly occurred after an event by Students for Justice in Palestine discussing Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

“We urge University of Nebraska officials to investigate this disturbing incident, take appropriate actions based on the results of that investigation and ensure the safety of Muslim and all other students,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Last month, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.

CAIR-CT Welcomes Hate Crime Charges for Apparently Anti-Muslim Assault

April 28, 2025

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed hate crime charges brought against two men who reportedly assaulted a man while using anti-Muslim slurs in Southington.

The men reportedly shouted comments about suicide vests and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, at the alleged victim. When the victim made a sarcastic self-deprecating joke in response, the men reportedly grew angry and punched him. When the woman the victim was with attempted to intervene, one of the men reportedly punched her. The men face hate crime charges for the alleged assault.

“We welcome the hate crime charges for the alleged perpetrators of this disturbing assault and thank law enforcement authorities for acting swiftly,” said CAIR-CT Chairman Farhan Memon. “Bias-motivated violence can never be tolerated or excused.”

Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country.

How Canada voted - in charts

29 Apr, 2025

Mark Carney's Liberal Party is expected to win enough seats in the House of Commons to form a government in Canada. It is not yet clear whether they will be able to secure a majority.

Carney is set to remain prime minister, having only assumed the role in early March following Justin Trudeau's resignation.

Carney's Liberals are leading in 167 seats but are currently short of the 172 needed for a majority.

The Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, are set to remain in opposition as the second-largest party and are leading in 145 seats, with 97% of polls having reported results.

The remaining seats are split between the Bloc Québécois - which only runs candidates in the province of Quebec - the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Green Party.

Canada has a "first-past-the-post" electoral system.

The candidate who gets the most votes in each electoral district, or riding, wins that seat and become a Member of Parliament (MP).

The Liberals and the Conservatives have dominated the popular vote, with both parties receiving more than 40% of ballots counted across Canada so far.

This has them on track to win a combined 90% of seats.

The NDP has received just over 6% of the total vote declared so far, but this translates to just 2% of seats in the House of Commons.

Both the Liberals and the Conservatives have seen a significant rise in their share of the national vote compared with four years ago.

Increased support for Canada's two largest parties has come at the expense of smaller parties, particularly the NDP whose share is down by around 12 percentage points.

The Liberals are on course to win the most seats in the key provinces of Ontario and Quebec, which account for 200 of Canada's 343 electoral districts.

The Conservatives are ahead in Alberta, while there is little to choose between the two main parties in British Columbia.

Twelve Niger soldiers killed in attack, two suspects detained, says army

28 April 2025

Twelve Nigerien soldiers have been killed in an attack in the west of the Sahel country and two suspects have been arrested, the army said in a statement seen by Reuters on Saturday.

The attack took place on Friday near the tri-border region of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, epicentre of a jihadist insurgency in West Africa linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

Armed men on Friday launched a "surprise offensive" on a military unit out on a mission about 10km north of the village of Sakoira, the statement said, referring to the assailants as terrorists.

It did not elaborate on the likely identity of the assailants but last month Niger blamed the EIGS group, an Islamic State affiliate, for an attack on a mosque near the tri-border area in which at least 44 civilians were killed.

The Sahel insurgency spun out of a Tuareg rebellion in northern Mali in 2012 and later spread into neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger before reaching the north of coastal West African countries such as Benin.

Hundreds of thousands have been killed and millions displaced as militants have gained ground, attacking villages, military and police posts and army convoys.

The failure of governments to restore security contributed to two coups in Mali, two in Burkina Faso and one in Niger between 2020 and 2023. All three remain under military rule despite regional and international pressure to hold elections.

Military authorities cut ties with traditional Western allies such as France and the US after the coups and turned to Russia to help in fighting jihadist activity.

Court Martial Sentences Soldier To Death By Hanging

April 29, 2025

A General Court Martial (GCM) sitting at the Headquarters, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, and Private Abubakar Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment for robbery.

Naija News reports that the GCM, inaugurated on February 18, 2025, by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, was convened to try military personnel for offences not triable summarily.

Delivering judgment, the President of the GCM, Brig.-Gen. Sadisu Buhari, said Private Mohammed, with service number 21NA/80/6365, was found guilty of killing his girlfriend, Miss Hauwa Ali.

The act, according to the court, violated Section 106(a) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

“In the interest of societal decorum and justice for the deceased, the law had to be applied to its fullest,” Brig.-Gen. Buhari stated.

Following a review of the evidence, service record, and plea for leniency, the court delivered a unanimous verdict sentencing Mohammed to death by hanging.

In a related ruling, Private Abubakar Yusuf, with service number 23NA/85/12116, was found guilty of robbery committed at a shopping mall in Enugu.

The offence, committed under Section 107(1)(b) of the Armed Forces Act, did not attract the maximum penalty due to the lack of unanimous consent among the court members.

Brig.-Gen. Buhari said Yusuf was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment under Section 140(3) of the same Act, with consideration given to mitigating pleas.

The GCM President noted that the verdicts are subject to confirmation by the appropriate military confirming authority.

Reacting to the judgment, Acting Deputy Director, 82 Division Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhulu, said the Nigerian Army remains committed to upholding discipline, ethics, and professional conduct.

He added that the wrongful actions of a few individuals do not reflect the values of the Nigerian Army, and that the institution takes decisive action to ensure accountability within its ranks.

Why Darfur is now the center of Sudan’s power struggle and humanitarian crisis

ROBERT BOCIAGA

April 28, 2025

LONDON: A haze of red dust hangs over the cracked roads of Al-Fasher. Children stumble through the rubble-strewn outskirts, barefoot and silent, their faces taut with exhaustion. A woman collapses beside a water container, her two toddlers clinging to her scarf.

Nearby, a man holds a torn piece of cardboard with the word “Zamzam” scrawled in charcoal — a word that no longer means refuge. The camp it refers to, once one of the largest displacement sites in Sudan’s North Darfur, has been ravaged by violence.

On April 11, armed groups reportedly linked to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces launched a deadly assault on the city of Al-Fasher, Zamzam, and another displacement camp called Abu Shouk, forcing tens of thousands to flee.

According to preliminary reports from the UN and humanitarian agencies, more than 400 civilians — including women, children, and up to a dozen aid workers — may have been killed in the space of three days, in attacks that also struck the nearby town of Um Kadadah.

The RSF said the camps in question were being used as bases by what it called “mercenary factions.” It also denied targeting civilians and accused its rivals of orchestrating a media campaign, using actors and staged scenes within the camp to falsely incriminate it.

The assault sent shockwaves throughout the region. More than 400,000 people fled, many of them to already overwhelmed towns like Tawila. Others disappeared into the hills of Jebel Marra, carrying only what they could hold. Zamzam is now under RSF control.

“It has been completely overrun — killing, raping, burning, and taking people hostage. No one remains unless they are prisoners,” Altahir Hashim, a human rights advocate who once lived in Zamzam, told Arab News.

Now based in the UK, Hashim monitors desperate voice messages sent by survivors still in hiding. “Every morning I hear names of the dead, pleas for food, calls for medicine,” he said. “But no one is listening.”

For many in Darfur, the violence echoes a familiar pattern — and a painful reminder of promises unkept. This April marked 20 years since the UN Security Council referred atrocities in the region to the International Criminal Court.

But for those displaced today, the anniversary feels hollow. “The killers are still free. The victims are still forgotten,” said Hashim, referring to the genocide perpetrated by the RSF’s forerunner, the Janjaweed. “We are reliving what the world said would never happen again.

“The people arriving in Al-Fasher have nothing. No shoes, no food, no blankets. Famine was already creeping through Zamzam before the attack — now it’s an open wound.”

Although the Sudanese Armed Forces have recently made headway against their RSF rivals, retaking the capital, Khartoum, in March, the center of the conflict has shifted elsewhere since erupting suddenly on April 15, 2023.

Al-Fasher itself has become the last major stronghold of the Sudanese state in Darfur region. Here, tens of thousands of newly displaced civilians crowd into schools, mosques, and courtyards.

The city, once a lifeline for aid distribution across the wider region, is now itself under siege. Forces reportedly affiliated to the RSF surround it, choking off humanitarian access and isolating the population within.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdullah Khatir, director general of North Darfur’s Ministry of Health, is among the few officials still coordinating medical efforts in the city. He described conditions as “beyond collapse.”

Khatir told Arab News: “Even pregnant women needing cesarean sections are being turned away.”

He added: “We have received reports of mothers dying in labor because there are no doctors, no medicine, no way out.”

Fuel has all but vanished from the city. Diesel prices have quintupled, halting the trucks that once delivered drinking water to outer neighborhoods. The city’s main water stations are out of service.

“Children are collapsing from dehydration,” Khatir said. “And now, our staff can’t even get to the clinics.”

Al-Fasher was never untouched by conflict, but it was a place where aid agencies could still operate and displaced people could seek help. Now, with RSF fighters reportedly deploying drones and artillery in surrounding areas, even that fragile space is crumbling.

Survivors describe the flight from Zamzam as a gauntlet of fear. Amina, a mother of four, arrived in Al-Fasher after walking for three days.

“We hid in dry riverbeds and behind trees,” she said. “My youngest is sick now — he hasn’t eaten properly in a week. There is no milk, no clean water. We are waiting for help that hasn’t come.”

Others, like 14-year-old Abdulrahman, came alone. “I lost my parents in the crowd. I don’t know if they made it,” he said, huddled beneath a tarp shared with strangers. “I just walked with people who were running.”

The UN children’s fund, UNICEF, has warned that more than 825,000 children around Al-Fasher are at daily risk of death due to malnutrition and a lack of clean water.

Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing aid — including 1,800 metric tons of food and 9,000 non-food kits — but with road access cut off and security deteriorating, deliveries have stalled. Several agencies say their staff remain trapped inside the city with no safe evacuation routes.

Medecins Sans Frontieres suspended operations in Zamzam earlier this year due to insecurity. Other groups have pulled back or reduced staff due to threats and attacks.

One international aid worker in Al-Fasher, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Arab News: “We’ve gone from emergency mode to survival mode. There’s nothing left to distribute. And no guarantee we’re even safe.”

The violence has once again drawn attention to Darfur’s long and bloody history of displacement, exclusion, and impunity.

In the early 2000s, the region was the site of mass killings and systematic ethnic targeting. Today, many Darfuris say the same patterns are playing out again.

“This isn’t just war,” Hashim said. “This is designed to erase entire communities. To remove them, not just physically, but from the map of Sudan.”

Fatima, a local nurse working in a makeshift clinic near Al-Fasher’s central mosque, said she sees the emotional toll every day. “We don’t have proper medicine, so we clean wounds with salt water. But it’s the look in people’s eyes that haunts me. They are afraid to hope.”

Despite urgent appeals from the UN and Sudan’s humanitarian coordinator, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, little progress has been made to secure humanitarian corridors or even a temporary ceasefire to allow aid in.

“Time is running out,” Dr. Khatir said. “We are out of water. Out of food. Out of medicine. And soon, out of time.”

Al-Fasher holds more than just strategic value; it is the historical and cultural heart of Darfur. For many here, it represents the last place left to defend human dignity.

“If Al-Fasher is lost,” Dr. Khatir said, “then the hope for Darfur is lost too.”

Shari’ah Council Loses President, Sheikh Hadiyatullah

By Abbas Jimoh

 29 Apr 2025

The President of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), Sheikh Abdul Rasheed Hadiyatullah, has passed away.

Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, the Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, said this in a statement he signed on Monday night.

He, however, did not give the details of where the late Muslim cleric died and when.

Sheik Molaasan said the late Sheik Hadiyatullah died leaving a significant void in the country’s Islamic leadership.

“He was born in Iwo, a prominent town in Osun State known for its deep Islamic heritage. Sheikh Hadiyatullah was a widely respected Islamic scholar and jurist, known for his tireless advocacy for the implementation of Shari’ah law within constitutional frameworks, interfaith dialogue, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.

“He served as the President of the SCSN for several years, guiding the council through times of both societal challenge and growth.

“Sheikh Hadiyatullah received his early Islamic education under local scholars before advancing his studies abroad. He earned respect across Nigeria and beyond for his profound knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and his calm, principled leadership style,” Molaasan said.

He also prayed Allah to forgive Sheikh Hadiyatullah and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
