SC criticises its January verdict denying bail to Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam

May 18, 2026

By Utkarsh Anand

The Supreme Court on Monday criticised its January 5 judgment denying bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid and activist Sharjeel Imam in the alleged larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, and emphatically held that “bail is the rule and jail is an exception” even in prosecutions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

A bench of justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, while granting bail to Jammu and Kashmir resident Syed Iftikhar Andrabi in a narco-terror case investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), expressed “serious reservations” about the reasoning adopted earlier this year by another two-judge bench comprising justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria in the Delhi riots conspiracy case.

The court underlined that the January 5 verdict failed to correctly apply the binding principles laid down by a larger three-judge bench in Union of India Vs KA Najeeb (2021), which recognised that prolonged incarceration and delay in trial can override the statutory restrictions on bail under Section 43D(5) of the UAPA.

Reading out the operative portions of the judgment in open court, Justice Bhuyan observed: “Bail is not an empty statutory slogan. It is a constitutional principle flowing from Article 21, and the presumption of innocence is the cornerstone of any civilised society governed by the rule of law.”

The bench added: “Even under UAPA, bail is the rule and jail an exception. Bail can only be denied in a particular case depending on the facts of that particular case.”

The ruling marks one of the sharpest judicial critiques by a coordinate bench of a recent Supreme Court judgment dealing with bail under anti-terror laws.

The court also took exception to the January verdict for directing that Khalid and Imam could revive their plea for bail only after examination of protected witnesses or after one year, whichever was earlier. According to the present bench, such a restriction was in complete derogation of the right of liberty guaranteed under the Constitution.

The January 5 judgment rejected bail pleas filed by Khalid and Imam in the Delhi riots conspiracy case while granting relief to five co-accused -- Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmed.

At the time, the bench of justices Kumar and Anjaria held that Khalid and Imam occupied a “central and formative role” in the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots, and ruled that prolonged incarceration alone could not justify bail in UAPA cases where courts found a prima facie case.

That judgment also relied upon the Supreme Court’s 2019 ruling in NIA Vs Zahoor Ahmad Shah Watali, which significantly tightened bail standards under UAPA by holding that courts must refrain from conducting a detailed evaluation of evidence at the bail stage and instead only assess whether the accusations appear prima facie true.

The bench of justices Nagarathna and Bhuyan held on Monday that subsequent rulings by smaller benches had progressively diluted the constitutional safeguards articulated in KA Najeeb.

“This case raises an important question concerning the interface between Section 43D(5) of the UAPA and the constitutional guarantee of personal liberty under Article 21...More particularly, the issue concerns the propriety of smaller benches progressively hollowing out the constitutional force of a larger bench decision without ever expressly disagreeing with it,” held Justice Bhuyan.

The bench referred to the Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling in Gurwinder Singh Vs State of Punjab and the January 2026 judgment in Gulfisha Fatima and connected Delhi riots cases, observing that both had taken “a somewhat divergent view” from the constitutional trajectory adopted in earlier cases dealing with prolonged incarceration.

In Gurwinder Singh, another two-judge bench had held that the conventional principle of “bail is the rule” had limited application under UAPA and evolved a “twin-prong test” under which courts were first required to determine whether accusations were prima facie true before considering ordinary bail factors such as flight risk or possibility of tampering with evidence.

On Monday, the Supreme Court strongly disapproved of that formulation.

“With respect, this test flows neither from the text of Section 43D(5) of the UAPA Act, nor from Najeeb. In fact, on the contrary, it is in Najeeb where it is categorically stated that Section 43D(5) provides no more than another possible ground for refusing bail, in addition to the well-settled considerations like possibility of tampering with evidence,” noted Justice Bhuyan.

The bench stressed that judicial discipline required smaller benches to follow larger bench decisions.

“A decision made by a bench of lesser strength is bound by the law declared by a bench of greater strength. Judicial discipline mandates that such a binding precedent must either be followed in full or, in case of doubt, be referred to a larger bench. A smaller bench cannot dilute, circumvent, or disregard the ratio of a larger bench,” it held.

The court reiterated that the ruling in KA Najeeb continues to govern the field.

In the Najeeb case, the Supreme Court had granted bail to a UAPA accused who had spent over five years in custody, noting that 276 witnesses remained to be examined and that the trial was unlikely to conclude within a reasonable time. The court held that constitutional courts could grant bail notwithstanding statutory embargoes where prolonged incarceration violates Article 21.

The observations came in the course of granting bail to Andrabi, who has been in custody since 2020 in a narco-terror case registered by the NIA in Jammu and Kashmir. While the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court had denied him bail in August 2025, citing the seriousness of the allegations and alleged links with cross-border terror operatives, the Supreme Court noted that no contraband had been directly recovered from him and that he had already undergone nearly five years of incarceration.

The bench also referred to official conviction statistics under UAPA.

“From 2019 to 2023, NCRB data show the conviction rate in Jammu & Kashmir stood at 0.89% in 2023… All-India figure is between 2% and 6%. The annual rate of acquittal in Jammu & Kashmir is therefore nearly 99%,” Justice Bhuyan observed.

The court ultimately held that Watali could not be invoked to justify “indefinite incarceration” and emphasised that constitutional courts must remain alive to the realities of prolonged undertrial detention even in terrorism-related prosecutions.

“The position of law emerging from Najeeb and Sheikh Javed Iqbal is therefore clear. Watali cannot be invoked to justify indefinite incarceration of the accused under the UAPA,” the bench held.

IDF arrests 10 Israeli civilians after crossing the Israel-Syria border

May 18, 2026

Israeli troops patrol the border fence with Syria in the Israel-annexed Golan Heights on July 23, 2025.

----------

CAIRO: The Israeli army arrested 10 Israeli civilians on Sunday after they crossed the Syrian border, according to the Jerusalem Post.

In a statement, the army said IDF soldiers operating in the area returned the civilians from Syrian territory to Israel, before transferring them to Israeli police.

“The IDF strongly condemns this incident and emphasizes its severity, which constitutes a criminal offense that endangers civilians and IDF soldiers,”  the military stated.

An Israeli news source reported that this was the fourth time in the past day that so-called activists from the “Habashan Pioneers” group had attempted to cross the border.

The group is reportedly one of many groups who are seeking to establish Jewish settlements inside Syria.

Saudi Arabia leads Arab condemnation of drone attack near Abu Dhabi nuclear power plant

May 17, 2026

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said the attack threatens regional security and stability. (SPA)

------------

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has condemned a drone attack that targeted an electricity generator in the UAE located outside the perimeter of the Barakah nuclear energy plant in the Al-Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi.

The Foreign Ministry said the attack threatens regional security and stability, and expressed its solidarity with the UAE and support for all measures to preserve its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The foreign ministries of Kuwait and Bahrain, along with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, also condemned the attack.

Kuwait said targeting peaceful nuclear energy facilities is a clear violation of international law and poses a risk to civilians, the environment and security.

Bahrain reaffirmed its solidarity with the UAE and praised Abu Dhabi’s air defense forces for their response to the threat.

Oman expressed its solidarity with the UAE in taking measures to preserve the security and the safety of its territories, and the same time called for dialogue to address issues and preserve regional stability.

Aboul Gheit expressed relief after statements from the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation that the fire caused by the attack had been contained.

The authority “confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the power plant or the readiness of its essential systems, and that all units are operating as normal.”

The UAE did not specify who launched the drone or its territory of origin.

The attack occurred during a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran as nearly 40 nations prepare efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed since late February, disrupting oil and gas markets.

Nationalists at London far-right hate march take aim at Muslims

17 May, 2026

----------

Racism and Islamophobia were on full display at London’s far-right rally on Saturday, where participants mocked Muslims and called on migrants to leave the country.

Tens of thousands crowded the streets of the British capital for the so-called "Unite the Kingdom" hate march, led by far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson, and bringing together various far-right groups.

The demonstration coincided with a much larger march in central London marking 78 years since the Nakba, when the state of Israel was created following the forced displacement and killing of 750,000 Palestinians. Many participants in the far-right rally were seen carrying Israeli flags.

In comments made to a participant at the rally, Robinson said he would "stop Islam" if he ever became prime minister.

"I would stop Islam, I’d end foreign funding for this country, all the migrants would be taken out of the hotels and sent back tomorrow by the military," he said.

"I would have remigration. It’s time for many Muslims to leave this country if they’re not willing to integrate or assimilate. It’s time to go home," he added.

The UK has seen a rise in Islamophobic hate crimes in recent years, particularly since the start of the war on Gaza, with incidents often underreported.

Far-right rallies such as Saturday’s, alongside sweeping victories for Reform UK in recent local elections, risk further polarising British society and deepening divisions over immigration and identity.

"You’ve got your homes to go to; this is our home. We’ve got nowhere to go to – we’re not allowing it to change any longer," Robinson claimed.

Far-right activist Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull also addressed the crowd, calling for Islam to be removed from schools and other public institutions.

"It’s not too late to get Islam out of our classrooms… it is not too late to get Islam out of every single official office in this country. And more than not too late, it is absolutely vital, if we want to save this country, we have to remove Islam from every single place of authority," she said.

Three women at the rally mocked Islam by taking to the stage dressed in a niqab, the face veil worn by some Muslim women. They were met with boos from the crowd, followed by chants of "take it off," before they removed the garments.

The move garnered widespread criticism online from activists and campaigners.

"Open display of Islamophobia at Unite The Kingdom rally in London sparking outrage as questions grow over the response of police and authorities," correspondent Murtaza Ali Shah wrote on X, commenting on a video of the niqab stunt.

"They would have arrested anyone else abusing Judaism and Christianity," he added. "Open display of Muslim hate but the police looked on. One law for pro-Palestine activists and Muslims and another for the right wing."

Some demonstrators at the rally were also seen carrying wooden crosses, in what appeared to be an attempt to frame the rally as a Christian response to Islam and other minority communities.

Kerry Moscogiuri, Chief Executive of Amnesty International UK, criticised various actors she said were profiting from the spread of hate online, and also called out officials in government and the media for helping to propagate this rhetoric.

"Once again, we are seeing a march that brings racism, violence and fear to the streets of London with the aim of whipping up hatred towards Muslims, migrants and people of colour," she said in a statement sent to the The New Arab.

"This rally is driven by a vicious combination of tech companies profiting off the amplification of hate online, funding by the likes of US tech billionaire Robert Shillman to further their own agendas and the scapegoating of migrants and people of colour for rising inequality by media commentators. Instead of countering this narrative, we have seen politicians responding by doubling down on racist rhetoric."

Moscogiuri said the government must do more to protect racialised communities from a rising tide of violence and hate, "and stop us going down this dangerous path."

A different message

A group of activists snuck a large screen into the march displaying messages in support of immigration.

In a video shared by the Led By Donkeys campaign on social media, the screen initially showed a Union Jack flag with the words "Unite the Kingdom," attracting attendees who posed for photos beside it.

Later, the real message was revealed. "Immigration makes Britain brilliant" appeared on the screen, alongside images of British singers, actors, sportspeople, and other public figures from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Some men were then seen attempting to climb the LED display truck to switch off the screen as police intervened.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the rally ahead of the protests, describing its organisers as "peddling hatred and division."

At least 31 arrests were made throughout the day, according to the Metropolitan Police, although authorities did not immediately provide a breakdown linked to each protest.

‘There won’t be anything left’: Trump says ‘clock is ticking’ for Iran as nuclear talks stall

May 18, 2026

US President Donald Trump intensified pressure on Iran on Sunday as diplomatic efforts to end months of conflict in the Middle East appeared to edge closer to collapse. Trump issued a stark warning on social media following a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signalling growing frustration over stalled talks. “For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won't be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” he wrote on Truth Social.

The warning came as both Washington and Tehran hardened their positions. According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the United States wants Tehran to surrender 400 kilograms of enriched uranium, limit operations to a single nuclear facility, abandon demands for war compensation and accept that most frozen Iranian assets would remain blocked. Iran, in turn, insisted sanctions must be lifted, frozen overseas assets released and military operations across the region halted before talks could resume.

Drone strike near UAE nuclear plant raises alarm

Amid the diplomatic deadlock, a drone strike sparked a fire near the UAE’s Barakah nuclear power plant, the only operational nuclear facility in the Arab world. UAE authorities described the incident as an “unprovoked terrorist attack”, although no group immediately claimed responsibility.

The UAE Defence Ministry said three drones crossed the western border with Saudi Arabia, with two intercepted before reaching their targets. There were no injuries or radiological leaks, while the UAE’s nuclear regulator confirmed that all reactors remained operational.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the strike caused a fire in an electrical generator and temporarily forced one reactor to rely on emergency diesel generators. The $20 billion facility, developed with South Korean support, supplies roughly a quarter of the UAE’s energy needs.

“The attack, whether carried out by the principal actor or through one of its proxies, represents a dangerous escalation,” Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, wrote on social media.

Ceasefire under pressure as rhetoric escalates

Iranian officials responded defiantly to Trump’s warning, with senior military adviser Mohsen Rezaei declaring on state television: “Our armed forces' fingers are on the trigger, while diplomacy is also continuing.”

Israeli officials also signalled preparations for renewed conflict. Netanyahu told his Cabinet that Israel was “prepared for any scenario”, while reports suggested Israeli and US officials were discussing possible coordinated military action if negotiations fail.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the US and Israel of attempting to destabilise Iran by backing “terrorist groups” during the conflict. Speaking during talks with Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq for refusing to allow their territory to be used for attacks against Iran.

Meanwhile, tensions continue to centre on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes. Iran has tightened control over maritime movement through the strait, while the US has expanded pressure on Iranian ports through a naval blockade.

‘Message for friends and foes’: Libyan National Army conducts grand exercises

May 18, 2026

DERNA, Libya: The Libyan National Army (LNA), commanded by Marshall Khalifa Haftar and controlling southern and eastern Libya, is conducting what officers describe as its biggest military exercise yet — and a message for both friends and foes.

At the entrance of a sprawling military encampment some 100 kilometers away from Derna, a towering portrait of Haftar overlooked the scene.

The sand whipped across a barren landscape as armored vehicles sped along.

The two-week exercises, which AFP journalists were permitted to observe during a visit over the weekend, will culminate on May 19 to mark the anniversary of the LNA’s 2014 “Operation Dignity” campaign against jihadist groups, including the Islamic State, in Benghazi.

The campaign allowed Haftar’s forces to wrest control over the east and ultimately parts of southern Libya.

Haftar, 82, and his sons — including Saddam, his heir apparent — will attend the display of firepower on May 19, along with foreign and Libyan officials.

The drills have deployed a panoply of military hardware — including tank formations and Russian-made Pantsir air-defense systems — with over 25,000 troops, said General Omar Mrajah Al Jedid, the officer overseeing the exercises.

General Abdallah Noureddine, another senior commander supervising operations near the village of El Ezzeiat, told AFP the maneuvers were “a message for our friends and our foes.”

Several reports have said that the United States, through Trump’s senior adviser on Arab and African affairs Massad Boulos, is trying to promote a rapprochement between Libya’s eastern and western authorities, signalling a potential shift in power structures.

The legislative bodies of both authorities last month signed a US-mediated agreement to unify public spending across the divided country for the first time in over a decade.

‘ARMY FOR ALL LIBYANS’

Libya has remained fractured since chaos broke loose following the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that toppled longtime ruler Muammar Qaddafi.

The oil-rich country remains divided between a UN-recognized government based in its capital, Tripoli, and an eastern administration in Benghazi backed by Haftar.

Haftar’s forces attempted to seize Tripoli in 2019 but failed after a year of armed conflict. Since then, a change of tack appears to have taken place.

General Noureddine said the LNA has focused less on outright conquest and more on showcasing its control over the east and south of the country, all while “wishing the same for the rest of Libya.”

Human rights groups, however, have over the years accused forces linked to Haftar of arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, and centralising power only within the Haftar clan.

General Al Jedid said the military drills would also demonstrate the army’s capacity to “safeguard the interests of all Libyans.”

The LNA is capable of “protecting the borders from all attacks,” he added, citing threats from “smugglers or terrorist groups currently moving through Mali, Niger and other countries in attempts to enter Libya.”

Responding to critiques on whether the force represents Libya as a whole, Al Jedid — himself from Tripoli and a former officer under Qaddafi — said the army did not serve only Haftar and eastern Libya.

“This is not a private army,” he said. “It’s not Marshall Haftar’s army, nor an army for the east, west or south. It’s the army of all Libyans, tribes and families.”

Anwar warns against threats to unity government stability

17 May 2026

PM Anwar Ibrahim warns against any attempts to destabilise the Unity Government, vowing to return the mandate to the people if challenged.

JOHOR BAHRU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today warned all quarters against attempting to threaten or undermine the stability of the Unity Government.

He said should such a situation arise, he is prepared to return the mandate to the people if challenged.

Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said although the coalition adopts a prudent and conciliatory approach in political negotiations, it should not be misconstrued as a sign of weakness.

“I want to send a clear message today. We have struggled for decades based on principles. We take a wise approach, negotiate properly, and refrain from openly rebuking or scolding them because we understand the meaning of bil hikmah (with wisdom).

“But do not misread it. Do not misunderstand. Do not threaten and do not take any action towards betrayal,” he said when speaking at the PH Convention here today.

Also present were DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He described the readiness as proof of the coalition’s courage, built on long-standing principles of struggle rather than personal interests or the pursuit of power.

Anwar said the PH leadership, comprising PKR, Amanah and DAP, remains intact and is not easily influenced by any attempt to incite internal betrayal.

“Throughout the three years of the MADANI Government, we have never incited intentions to betray our friends. We listen, make adjustments and move cautiously because we want this government to remain stable and the country peaceful — politics must be stable, the country must remain peaceful,” he said.

The Prime Minister also criticised the attitude of certain parties whom he described as apologetic and only daring to target minor issues while remaining silent on major looters who plundered the nation’s wealth.

He said the MADANI Government under his leadership would not compromise on corruption, particularly involving elites and high-ranking individuals, including those bearing the titles Tun and Tan Sri, who were alleged to have abused their positions to amass the people’s wealth.

“This is a team in the Cabinet that works. Not a team that loots wealth. The core issue of reform is that we detest oppression and those who use public office to amass billions in wealth. We have stopped this practice among the leadership,” he said.

Touching on the government’s performance, Anwar urged PH members and supporters not to remain defensive, but instead to step forward and defend the country’s increasingly strong economic achievements.

He said among the key achievements were the projected first-quarter Gross Domestic Product growth of 5.4% this year, the highest investment in history, low unemployment and inflation rates, as well as the highest salary increase for civil servants in the country’s history.

“These figures must be understood because if they are not explained, people are more likely to focus on small problems and forget the bigger picture we are building. We have set conditions that performance must be good, and we must not let the people wait too long for services. This is what we constantly monitor,” he said.

May 18, 2026

KABUL: Dr. Mirdif Al-Qashouti, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Afghanistan, has reaffirmed his country’s support for programs aimed at strengthening the capacities of Afghan youth, emphasizing that culture and civilization remain among the strongest bridges for enhancing relations between nations.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Shaikh Shir Ahmad Haqqani, the Minister of Information and Culture, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Qatar is fully prepared to cooperate in programs designed to support the professional, educational and cultural development of Afghan youth, the Ambassador said, adding that cultural and civilizational ties can play a key role in building stronger cooperation across different sectors between countries.

“Culture and civilization are among the strongest bridges between nations and can pave the way for broader relations in various fields,” the statement quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, Shaikh Shir Ahmad Haqqani stated that Afghanistan and Qatar enjoy long-standing and friendly relations and stressed the importance of strengthening cultural engagement between the two countries.

The minister noted that his-led ministry has planned a range of initiatives for the development and capacity-building of Afghan youth and said the support and cooperation of friendly nations are important for the success of such programs.

Both sides also emphasized continued collaboration in cultural affairs and youth-focused initiatives as part of broader relations between Kabul and Doha.

Bhopal ‘love jihad’ assault: Police say accused not linked to right-wing groups

Anand Mohan J

May 18, 2026

Police have said they have not found links with the Bajrang Dal, or that to any right-wing organisation, so far of the seven held in connection with the beating up of a 29-year-old inside a hotel in Bhopal recently, on charges of “love jihad”.

Of the seven held, one is a juvenile, Govindpura SHO Awadhesh Singh Tomar said, identifying the others as Brijendra Prajapati, Prateek Chouksey, Lalaram Meena, Ramesh, Ajay and Aman. “Representatives of right-wing organisations have informed that they are a disciplined organisation and these individuals are not their members,” the SHO said.

The Muslim youth has also been arrested since, over old allegations pending for some years. SHO Tomar said: “He was recently released from jail and we found was involved in two cases of mobile phone thefts. After this came to light, we arrested him.”

A video had surfaced of the youth being assaulted, stripped, having his face smeared with cow dung, and being paraded on the streets, after he met with a Hindu friend at a hotel. Both had testified that they were at the hotel voluntarily, and had refused to file a complaint.

The FIR on the basis of which seven people have been held was filed by a local social worker, Mohmmad Uwais Rahmani, who said he was disturbed by the video, and who spoke to the Muslim youth at the police station. Incidentally, what the 29-year-old youth reportedly told Rahmani was initially registered as a complaint in the former’s name. DCP (Bhopal) Vikas Kumar Sehwal said they had “rectified” the same.

Rahmani said the youth told him that he had come to the hotel to meet his woman friend, and was beaten up only because he is Muslim, was “falsely accused of love jihad” and subjected to “indecent behaviour”.

Rahmani told The Indian Express: “I do not know the youth… My complaint was on the sentiments of the Muslim community being hurt.”

As per his complaint, the youth said that “some persons, who identified themselves as associated with Bajrang Dal, stopped me because I am Muslim”. “They behaved in an extremely inhuman manner with me by forcibly stripping me, smearing black paint on my face, applying cow dung and publicly humiliating me.” It alleges that the accused gathered a crowd and recorded videos while “raising objectionable slogans against my religion, seriously hurting the religious sentiments of both myself and the Muslim community.”

“When I opposed them, the accused paraded me in a public place, assaulted me and threatened to kill me,” Rahmani’s complaint states, quoting the youth.

The victim suffered “physical injuries and extreme mental trauma” and the incident had created “an atmosphere of fear and insecurity” for him and his family, the complaint says.

The complaint also states that videos of the incident were circulated on social media and carried by news platforms. “The acts of the accused are not only a serious attack on my fundamental rights and dignity, but also against the spirit of the Constitution,” the complaint says. It adds that the incident has caused “deep anger within the Muslim community” and could affect the city’s social atmosphere.

'India’s strength lies in ... ': MEA rebuts criticism on press freedom, minorities in India

May 17, 2026

NEW DELHI: At a press briefing in The Netherlands, Ministry of external affairs secretary (West), Sibi George, strongly rejected concerns about the minority rights and press freedom in India. Responding to question, George defended India’s democratic and social framework, saying the country’s strength lies in its diversity, religious coexistence and democratic freedoms.

Addressing foreign journalists and observers in The Hague, George said concerns raised on these issues stem from a “lack of understanding” about India’s history, institutions and social fabric.

“India is a country of 1.4 billion people, the largest populated country in the world. A country of civilisation of more than 5,000 years old. It's a diverse country,” George said, describing India as a society where multiple religions, cultures, languages and communities continue to coexist peacefully.

Calling India a “vibrant democracy”, the senior diplomat said freedom of expression and press freedom remain deeply embedded in the country’s democratic culture.

“You know how many of these are in India? The smartphones? 900 million of them. And these are very important weapons,” he said while referring to public participation and freedom of communication in India.

“Everyone has the freedom of expression, freedom of press in the country. And that makes our democracy a very noisy democracy. And we are proud of that,” he added.

George highlighted India’s recent elections as an example of democratic participation, saying more than 90 percent of the electorate voted. “This is the beauty of India. It's a vibrant democracy,” he said.

The MEA official also pushed back against criticism regarding minorities in India, arguing that religious and linguistic communities continue to flourish in the country.

“When we became independent, the minority population in India was 11%. Now it is more than 20%. Name a country where the population of minorities have gone up. You won't find it other than India,” he said.

George pointed to India’s long history of hosting and protecting diverse faiths, noting that Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism all originated in India and continue to thrive there. He also referenced the historical presence of Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities in the country.

“Jewish religion was in India for more than 2,500 years, continuously coexisted. India is only one of those very few countries where the Jewish population never faced a persecution,” he said.

On Christianity, George noted that “Christianity came to India immediately after the resurrection of Jesus Christ” and added that the religion “came to India much before it came to Europe”.

Speaking about Islam, he said, “Islam came to India during the time of Prophet Muhammad himself and flourished in India.”

He repeatedly described India’s multicultural coexistence as “the beauty of India”, arguing that persecuted communities from different parts of the world historically found refuge in the country.

George also highlighted India’s linguistic diversity, saying all major languages continue to flourish. “There are 22 official languages. If you take an Indian currency, there are 22 languages written in it,” he said.

The diplomat linked India’s democratic structure to its economic rise, saying the country achieved sustained growth without compromising democratic principles.

“Today we are the largest, fastest growing large economy in the world. 8% growth for the last 25 years. And how did we achieve it? Without compromising on our democratic principles,” he said.

“We did not go for violence to eliminate poverty. We went a democratic process of elimination of poverty,” George added.

Concluding his remarks, George invited critics and foreign observers to visit India and experience its diversity and democratic environment firsthand.

“So I would invite also you to visit India and see for yourself how India lives, how thriving an economy it is, how vibrant a democracy it is,” he said.

Bail is rule, jail is exception in UAPA cases: SC grants relief in high-profile narco-terror case

18.05.26

Observing that bail is the rule and jail is an exception even in UAPA cases, the Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to a man facing trial in a high-profile narco-terror case for his alleged involvement in a cross-border syndicate engaged in drug trafficking and financing terror in Jammu and Kashmir.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan granted relief to Handwara resident Syed Iftikhar Andrabi and directed him to surrender his passport and report to the local police station once in 15 days.

The NIA is investigating the case filed in 2020 under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the IPC.

The top court said Section 43D(5) of the UAPA cannot justify indefinite incarceration and must operate subject to Articles 21 and 22. The section outlines stringent bail restrictions.

"Bail the rule and jail the exception is a constitutional principle flowing from article 21 and 22 and the presumption of innocence is the cornerstone of any civilized society governed by rule of law," the bench said.

The apex court made it clear that its judgement in the KA Najeeb case is a binding law and cannot be diluted, circumvented or disregarded by trial courts, high courts or even by benches of a lower strength of this court.

The KA Najeeb case is a landmark Supreme Court ruling delivered in 2021 regarding bail under the UAPA.

Andrabi had challenged an order passed by the High Court of J&K and Ladakh, which dismissed his bail, saying scrutiny of cellphone records indicated that Andrabi had been in touch with terror operatives across the border.

Better political representation, oppose SIR, restore quotas: Karnataka Muslim body in 3-tier demand

May 18, 2026

The Karnataka Federation of Muslim Organisations Saturday released a report on issues including reservation, political representation, and the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in the state, while also questioning the Congress over its poll promises to the community during the last elections.

The recent convention assumes significance in light of the bypolls results in Davanagere South, where, despite the Congress win, its margin of victory had dropped from 27,900 to 5,700.

The dissatisfaction amongst the Muslim voters, who are a third of the electorate in Davanagere South, was also apparent in a rebellion amongst Muslim Congress leaders, culminating in the suspension of MLC Abdul Jabbar and the removal of MLC Naseer Ahmed from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s political secretary and thus cabinet rank.

The report, addressed to the CM, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, and Assembly, said that after the support extended by the community to the Congress in 2023, “There have been improvements in education and welfare, but major concerns like reservation, dignity, livelihood, religious freedom, protection from hate, and political representation are still unresolved or only partly addressed.”

The Federation also put forward a three-tier charter of demands seeking a formal withdrawal of the order barring hijabs for women students, protection of Waqf properties, and the restoration of the 4 per cent reservation for Muslims under Category 2B, which was scrapped by the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in 2023.

It sought action against groups spreading “hatred and communal division”, noting, “FIRs alone have not created deterrence, as many repeat offenders continue to operate publicly without meaningful consequences.”

The report also demanded the withdrawal of The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020, citing the hardships caused to farmers, butchers, leatherworkers, and Muslim meat traders. It also noted that a Cabinet decision had been taken to withdraw the anti-conversion law, but the Bill had not subsequently been tabled.

Political representation of Muslims within the Congress government was also amongst the various issues raised by the Federation, which said it was disproportionately low in the Karnataka Assembly. It pointed out that there were currently four MLCs from the community, which, given the state’s Muslim population, should be 9 or 10.

The Federation also expressed serious concerns about the upcoming SIR exercise in Karnataka, citing the deletion of names from electoral rolls in Bihar and West Bengal. It called on the Karnataka Government to oppose the SIR exercise and suggested several measures, including ensuring that roll revisions were carried out in a democratic and transparent manner.

It also suggested that a circular be issued to warn people against engaging in “malpractice,” such as the “misuse” of Form 7 applications to delete voters.

Civil society groups in Bengaluru have previously come together against the Special Intensive Revision, as reported by The Indian Express.

Other tiers of suggestions, such as allocating Rs 10,000 crore for minority welfare and strengthening the State Minorities Commission, were sought to be achieved by the end of the fiscal year or by May 2028, respectively.

Amid unease, imams urge devotees to offer qurbani following govt rules

May 17, 2026

Kolkata: Amid a growing unease ahead of the festival of Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha, set to be observed in the last week of May, Muslim intellectuals and religious figures across Kolkata have urged the community to follow all legal guidelines on animal sacrifice after the newly elected BJP govt in Bengal reiterated existing curbs on cattle slaughter through a public notice issued last week.

The state govt notification cited provisions of the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950, along with a 2018 Calcutta High Court order, stating that cattle cannot be slaughtered without valid certification declaring the animal fit for slaughter under the law. The order specified that certification could only be jointly issued by the chairman of a municipality or the sabhapati of a panchayat samiti, along with a govt veterinary surgeon.

The notification further stated that authorities must be satisfied that the animal was either over 14 years of age for work or breeding purposes, or became permanently incapacitated because of age, injury, deformity or incurable disease.

After the govt notification, several Muslim organisations, clerics and community figures have appealed to people to avoid sacrificing cows or cattle during the festival and instead opt for goats or sheep in accordance with legal requirements.

"The Muslim community must perform sacrifice strictly within the framework of the law. We should work in coordination with the new govt and avoid any confrontation over the issue," said Abdul Aziz, secretary of the Milli Ettehad Parishad. "Islam permits the sacrifice of several animals during Bakrid. People can choose goats or sheep while observing the religious ritual. At the same time, we expect administration to ensure equal treatment of all citizens without discrimination."

Maulana Shafique Qasmi of Nakhoda Mosque said the Muslim community should comply with the provisions laid down by the govt while also seeking administrative measures that would help people carry out the ritual smoothly. "The govt has clarified that sacrifice must take place according to the 1950 law, and we respect that position," said Qasmi. "There are other animals that can be sacrificed during Bakrid, including goats and sheep. At the same time, cattle traders and those dependent on the trade could face economic losses if there are curbs on sale and movement. We hope the govt will examine ways to make the process easier within legal framework."

Maulana Shabbir Misbahi, imam of the Royd Street Mosque, also appealed to residents to follow official regulations during the festival. "As responsible Indian Muslims, we must observe the ritual of sacrifice while remaining within the ambit of the law," said Misbahi. "I request people across Bengal to follow all govt guidelines."

Online campaigns urging Muslims to choose goats and sheep for qurbani this year also gathered momentum in recent days. Azhar Khan, a businessman from central Kolkata associated with one such campaign, said Islamic tradition allows for a range of animals to be sacrificed.

"There is no compulsory requirement that only cows must be sacrificed," said Khan. "Islam provides a wider list of animals that may be offered for qurbani. People should follow the law and ensure the festival is observed peacefully."

Adhir seeks Suvendu’s intervention on animal slaughter guidelines: ‘Unease, unrest among Muslims’

Ravik Bhattacharya

May 17, 2026

Days after the new BJP government in West Bengal issued directives to all district administrations to ensure strict adherence to the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Act and issued guidelines, senior Congress leader and former MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has sought Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s intervention to mitigate the “unease and unrest created by the guidelines among the minority community”.

In a letter to the chief minister, the former MP wrote that in his home district of Murshidabad, where Muslims are in the majority, the notice regarding adherence to the guidelines has caused consternation in the community.

Suggesting that places for animal slaughter should be identified and demarcated, the Congress leader wrote, “With a view to enabling people of different communities to practise their socio-religious customs without any misgivings or problems, I would suggest that in places like Murshidabad in particular, the district administration may undertake measures to identify and demarcate specific locations where people could practise the customs associated with the religious faith they profess.”

“Such locations that are identified and demarcated would be used solely for customary practises associated with the religious grouping. This approach will be an ideal solution for putting to rest the unease the notice may be causing, particularly among the minority community, who constitute a major chunk of the population in Murshidabad, and follow certain practices that are customary,” added the former MP from Bahrampur in Murshidabad.

On May 13, the new government issued a public notice stating that no one will be allowed to carry out animal slaughter without a certificate of the animal being fit for slaughter. “No person shall slaughter any animal, thereby meaning (bulls, bullocks, cows, calves, male and female buffaloes, buffalo calves, and castrated buffaloes) unless he has obtained in respect thereof a certificate that the animal is fit for slaughter,” stated the notice.

However, animals can only be slaughtered in a municipal slaughterhouse or any other slaughterhouse earmarked by the administration, it added.

The notice, which was issued ahead of the Bakrid festival of Muslims in which animal sacrifices are made, also strictly prohibited animal slaughter in public places. Only animals above 14 years of age or those found permanently incapacitated due to injury, deformity, age or incurable disease would qualify for slaughter, according to the notice.

“Whoever contravenes any of the above provisions of law, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a period upto six months or with fine upto Rs. 1,000/- or with both. All offences under the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Act 1950 shall be cognizable offences,” the notice stated.

Vellappally Natesan launches fresh attack on IUML; rakes up Malabar Rebellion, Marad Riots

May 17, 2026

SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan launched a renewed attack on the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), asserting that the majority community will never forget historical tragedies like the Malabar Rebellion of 1921 and the 2003 Marad Riots.

In an editorial, titled ‘Won’t forget Malabar rebellion and Marad,’ published in the SNDP Yoganadam mouthpiece Yoganadam, Natesan recalled the 1921 Malabar Rebellion and the Marad communal riots, warning that the IUML’s ambitions and divisive politics pose a continuous threat to the state’s secular fabric.

Accusing the IUML of pursuing an extreme anti-Hindu agenda and acting with unwarranted authority, Natesan, in the editorial, asserted that the majority community will never forget historical tragedies like the Malabar Rebellion and the Marad riots, claiming the IUML’s political actions could provoke similar incidents. “The Muslim League (IUML) grew and flourished in the land of the Malabar riots, which killed and displaced Hindus. The strategy of turning a massacre into a freedom struggle is no longer valid. We know very well who is behind the Marad riots,” reads the editorial.

Natesan sharply criticized the IUML’s role in state governance, alleging that the party pushes communal agendas under the guise of secularism. He further alleged that the IUML shields extremists and targets those who oppose its communal influence, explicitly attacking leader K.M. Shaji and highlighting a common cause with the NSS.

He firmly denied accusations of being anti-Muslim. He argued that he is only targeting the IUML’s alleged discrimination and religious favoritism, rather than the Muslim community at large. “The organization is making a deliberate effort to isolate anyone who opposes the Muslim League’s (IUML) anti-secular and anti-democratic stance, branding them as anti-Muslim and communal. The SNDP Yogam general secretary is being attacked on the streets for strongly opposing the religious discrimination and communalism of the organization called the Muslim League, not the Muslim religion,” Natesan wrote

In the editorial, Vellappally Natesan also condemned IUML protests, specifically the provocative rally in Idukki, stating he will not be intimidated by street abuses, threats, or the burning of his effigies.

The IUML courted controversy after a celebratory procession held following the announcement of VD Satheesan as Chief Minister featured provocative slogans. The march, organised by the IUML in the Idukki district, featured slogans such as “In Kerala, the land where the League rules, it is the League that decides the laws,” along with abusive remarks targeting leaders of caste organisations.

The sloganeering, which initially hailed Satheesan, later turned sharper, directly targeting Nair Service Society (NSS) chief Sukumaran Nair and Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan.

“Who is this Vellappally? Who is this Sukumaran? Look closely, this is the League, Panakkad’s League,” the workers shouted. They also used abusive language against Vellappally Nateshan, who had targeted the party in harsh language in the run-up to the polls.

The IUML state leadership strongly rejected the sloganeering as inconsistent with the party’s values and suspended the Idukki district committee.

Backyard snake now a noose? Back-to-back attacks tarnish Pak army’s reputation

May 17, 2026

Media attention on Pakistan owing to its hosting of the US-Iran peace talks notwithstanding, a report said that the country’s military is “shockingly losing to militants it once nurtured,” after India's western neighbour topped the Global Terrorism Index 2026.

Released on March 30, the index placed Pakistan at the top of the list of countries most affected by terrorism, marking the first time it has ranked first.

“While Asim Munir’s army was busy projecting power and hogging the global spotlight — mediating between the US and Iran, dispatching fighter jets and troops to Riyadh — it was ‘shockingly losing ground at home’ to the very militant groups it once nurtured,” a EurAsian Times report said, referring to Pakistan’s powerful army chief and now Field Marshal.

According to the report, since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict in late February, terror attacks within Pakistan have not only continued but also intensified in several regions, especially those bordering Afghanistan.

The restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces accounted for a staggering 74% of these attacks and 67% of the fatalities, it stated, adding that the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) have “wreaked havoc” on the Pakistani military and have, in fact, grown bolder, “more sophisticated, and more lethal.”

The report noted that earlier this year, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) carried out one of its most coordinated attacks in years, launching strikes across at least nine districts in Balochistan, including the capital Quetta and the port city of Gwadar. The attacks reportedly targeted police stations, banks, markets and security installations, killing dozens of civilians and security personnel.

It also mentioned a major suicide bombing outside a Shia mosque in Islamabad, which killed at least 31 worshippers. The attack, one of the deadliest in the capital in recent years, was widely attributed to Islamic State – Khorasan.

In a rare incident, Baloch insurgents also ambushed a Coast Guard patrol near Gwadar, killing three officials. This marked the first recorded incident of the BLA attacking a Pakistani maritime vessel.

There have already been five attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan between May 7 and 15.

“Field Marshal Asim Munir’s forces are struggling to secure their own cantonments and border regions despite projecting strength abroad — be it in Riyadh or in brokering talks in Islamabad,” the report stated.

Pakistan signed a joint strategic defence pact with Saudi Arabia in September last year. Under the agreement, an attack on one is considered an attack on the other. Under the agreement, Islamabad last month deployed a military contingent comprising around 13,000 soldiers and 10 to 18 jets to Saudi Arabia, which is among the Gulf states attacked by Iran in retaliation to the US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic that triggered the current Middle East conflict.

Israel PM says close to killing all architects of October 7 attack

May 17, 2026

JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel had almost completed a key goal of the war in Gaza — eliminating all those responsible for orchestrating the October 7 attack.

His remarks followed the Israeli military’s announcement that Ezzedine Al-Haddad, commander of Hamas’s armed wing, had been killed in an airstrike in Gaza on Friday.

In the aftermath of the October 7 assault, Netanyahu pledged to target and eliminate the masterminds behind the attacks, which, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures, resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people.

“I promised that every single architect of the massacre and the hostage-taking would be eliminated down to the last one, and we are very close to completing this mission,” Netanyahu said during the weekly cabinet meeting, describing Haddad as a “despicable terrorist.”

Since Hamas’s cross-border assault, the Israeli military and intelligence services have waged a campaign targeting the group’s senior political leaders and militant commanders in Gaza and across the region.

During the war triggered by the Hamas attacks, Israel has claimed responsibility for assassinating several Hamas leaders, including the group’s former political chief Ismail Haniyeh.

Israeli soldiers also killed Yahya Sinwar, who was widely regarded as a key mastermind behind the October 7 attack.

Mohammed Deif, the longtime commander of Hamas’s armed wing and considered an architect of the attack, was also killed during the war.

Israeli strikes have also targeted Hamas operatives in Lebanon, as well as senior Iran-backed Hezbollah commanders allied with the group, including former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, reiterated on Sunday that Israeli forces currently control 60 percent of Gaza’s territory.

The statement suggests that the military has continued to expand its operational presence in Gaza, following recent media reports that Israeli troops had advanced toward a newly-designated “Orange Line.”

Under the terms of the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, in effect since October 10, Israeli forces were to withdraw to a so-called “Yellow Line” in Gaza, leaving them in control of more than 50 percent of the Palestinian territory.

“We have Hamas in our grip. We know exactly what our mission is, and our mission is: To ensure that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel,” Netanyahu said.

Israel’s military campaign against Hamas since the October 2023 attacks has killed at least 72,763 people in Gaza, the majority of them civilians, according to the territory’s health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority.

Despite an October ceasefire, Gaza remains gripped by daily violence as Israeli strikes continue, with both the military and Hamas accusing one another of violating the truce.

At least 871 Palestinians have been killed since the truce began, according to the territory’s health ministry.

The United Nations considers these figures reliable.

Over the same period, the Israeli military said five soldiers have been killed in Gaza.

‘Staggering’ Iran toll drives up global executions: Amnesty

May 18, 2026

PARIS: Iran put to death over 2,150 people last year, a “staggering” increase that pushed recorded worldwide executions to their highest level since 1981, Amnesty International said Monday.

Amnesty said it had confirmed the executions of at least 2,707 people globally in 2025. Of these cases, 2,159 were in Iran, a figure more than double that of 2024, Amnesty said.

But the UK-based rights group said that, as in previous years, its total “does not include the thousands of executions” that it believed were carried out in China, the world’s most prolific user of the death penalty, due to “the state secrecy” over data.

Amnesty said the figure of at least 2,707 people executed in 2025 represented an increase by more than two-thirds on the total the previous year.

“This trend was strongest in countries where the authorities have tightened their grip on power by restricting civic space, silencing dissent and displaying disregard for protections established under international human rights law and standards,” it added.

In particular, the “staggering increase in recorded executions in Iran” came as authorities “intensified their use of the death penalty as a tool of political repression and control” in particular after the June 2025 war with Israel.

Linked to protests

Amnesty and other rights groups have noted that Iran is stepping up its use of the death penalty again in 2026 after January protests and the war against Israel and the United States, with executions on charges linked to the protests and membership of banned groups.

The group said the known total of 2,159 executions carried out in Iran in 2025 — a considerably higher figure than that published by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights NGO earlier this year — “constituted the highest figure on record since 1981” in the country. It was also the highest globally since that year.

The trend was reflected — albeit on a lesser scale — elsewhere in the region.

Executions in Kuwait almost tripled, from six in 2024 to 17.

In Egypt, they nearly doubled, from 13 to 23.

In Yemen, the yearly figure rose by more than a third, from at least 38 to at least 51, it added.

In the United States — the only country in the Americas to have carried out executions in 2025 — the “unprecedented rise” of executions in Florida to 19 drove the national total to 47, the highest figure since 2009, it said.

Singapore authorities carried out 17 executions, the highest number in the country since 2003, it added.

China’s “state secrecy” over its use of the death penalty “pointed to an intentional use of the death penalty to send a message that the state would not tolerate threats to public security or stability,” said Amnesty.

“Amnesty International continues to consider China as the world’s leading executioner,” it said.

Lebanon says Israeli strikes kill 7 as Hezbollah condemns talks

BEIRUT, Lebanon: Israeli strikes killed seven people in Lebanon on Sunday, including an Islamic Jihad commander, Lebanese authorities and state media said, despite a fragile ceasefire as Hezbollah called US-brokered talks between the two countries a “dead end.”

The health ministry published a “preliminary toll” for Israel’s strikes on Sunday, with three people killed in the town of Tayr Felsay, including a child, and two killed in the town of Tayr Debba, including another child.

It said 11 people were wounded in those strikes and four more were wounded in strikes in two other southern towns.

Later Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) said an Israeli missile strike around midnight on an apartment on the outskirts of the city of Baalbek in the country’s east had killed Islamic Jihad commander Wael Abdel Halim and his 17-year-old daughter.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to strike widely in southern Lebanon and issues frequent evacuation warnings to towns and villages across the south.

Two Israeli strikes also hit the town of Sohmor in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa valley on Sunday, the state-run NNA said.

The Israeli army later issued an evacuation warning to four villages near the southern coastal city of Sidon, dozens of kilometers from the border area, which were also subject to an evacuation warning on Saturday.

Israeli airstrikes hit three of the four villages following the warning, the NNA said.

WASHINGTON TALKS

Speaking at the start of a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was “holding territory, clearing territory, protecting Israel’s communities, but also fighting an enemy that is trying to outsmart us.”

“We are facing the challenge of neutralising FPV (First-Person view) drones,” he said, as Hezbollah has increasingly made use of the drones to strike Israeli forces.

The latest exchanges of fire came after envoys from Israel and Lebanon held a third round of negotiations in Washington and agreed to extend the ceasefire, talks that Iran-backed Hezbollah has repeatedly denounced.

“The direct negotiations that the authorities in Lebanon have conducted with the Israeli enemy have... led them down a dead-end path that will result in nothing but one concession after another,” Hezbollah lawmaker Hussein Hajj Hassan said on Sunday.

“Neither they nor anyone else will be able to carry out what the enemy wants, especially when it comes to the issue of disarming the resistance,” he said, adding that authorities were creating “very big predicaments” for the country.

In a statement on Saturday, the group called the proposed establishment of a US-facilitated security track a fresh addition “to the series of free concessions” the Lebanese government “offers the enemy.”

On Saturday the group also said it had struck a military target in northern Israel, having earlier announced several operations against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

Israel sent ground forces into southern Lebanon during the latest war and they continue to occupy territory near the border between the two countries.

Israeli attacks since the start of the war have killed more than 2,900 people in Lebanon, including more than 400 since the truce began on April 17, according to Lebanese authorities.

Syria’s Hama province clears more than 79,000 cubic meters of debris amid recovery efforts

May 17, 2026

HAMA: Syrian emergency teams have removed more than 79,000 cubic meters of debris from northern and eastern areas of Hama province as part of continuing recovery operations aimed at restoring infrastructure and facilitating the return of displaced residents.

Mohammad Al-Sheikh Qaddour, director of Emergency and Disaster Management in Hama, said that cleanup crews cleared 79,521 cubic meters of rubble from three main locations: 60,808 cubic meters in Morek, 15,431 cubic meters in Aqirbat, and 3,282 cubic meters in Lahaya village.

Qaddour said that the campaign formed part of broader early recovery efforts focused on improving public services and creating safer conditions in communities affected by years of civil war.

He said that debris removal operations were continuing in other targeted areas across the province.

Residents said that the cleanup campaign had helped to reopen blocked roads and public spaces while reducing environmental and public health risks ahead of the summer season.

The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management said that since the launch of the campaign on March 1, 198,199 cubic meters of debris had been removed across Hama province as part of rehabilitation and stabilization efforts.

Around 120,000 Syrian refugees return home from Lebanon

May 17, 2026

LONDON: Over 120,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon returned to their hometowns in the Syrian Arab Republic during the first four months of 2026, according to official figures.

The return came amid the fragile ceasefires between the US and Iran and between Hezbollah and Israel since early April. Currently, 490,424 Syrian refugees are registered with the UN Human Rights Council in Lebanon.

The Lebanese government estimates that nearly 1.12 million people have fled the civil war in Syria, which lasted from 2011 to 2024.

Mazen Alloush, head of public relations at Syria’s General Authority for Borders and Customs, said that around 1.26 million people have arrived from Lebanon since January, including the 120,000 Syrian refugees.

In total, more than 3.4 million people crossed the Syrian border during the same period, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

The Jousieh crossing is now a key transit point for Syrians returning from Lebanon, where many refugees are experiencing increasing economic pressure and stricter residency rules, the SANA added.

Jordanian king and Australian defense minister discuss development in Strait of Hormuz

May 17, 2026

LONDON: King Abdullah of Jordan met in Amman with Richard Marles, the Australian deputy prime minister and minister for defense, to discuss regional development and security matters.

The meeting on Sunday focused on ways to enhance cooperation in various sectors, particularly military and security-related fields, according to the Petra news agency.

King Abdullah emphasized that any agreement to end the war between the US and Iran must ensure the security of Arab states. He urged greater international efforts to sustain the ceasefire reached in April, Petra added.

Crown Prince Hussein attended the meeting alongside chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, director of the office of his majesty Alaa Batayneh, and Australia’s ambassador to Jordan, Paula Ganly.

Australia is part of the Multinational Military Mission, a coalition of nearly 40 nations led by the UK and France. The coalition aim is to coordinate efforts to resume the flow of energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed since the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran in late February.

Israel to establish defense offices in former UNRWA compound

May 17, 2026

JERUSALEM: Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved a plan to build a defense compound on the site of the recently demolished premises of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in East Jerusalem.

Israel in January demolished structures inside the UN Palestinian refugee agency’s East Jerusalem compound after seizing the site last year, in an act condemned by the agency as a violation of international law.

In a joint statement, the Defense Ministry and Jerusalem Municipality said the new compound would include the establishment of a military museum, a recruitment office and a defense ministers office.

Defense Minister Israel Katz called the decision one of sovereignty, Zionism, and security.

UNRWA, which Israeli authorities accuse of bias, had not used the building since the start of last year after Israel ordered it to vacate all its premises and cease its operations.

A UNRWA spokesperson declined to comment on the Israeli plan.

The agency operates in East Jerusalem, which the UN and most countries consider territory occupied by Israel as it was captured from Jordan in the 1967 Middle East war. Israel considers all Jerusalem to be its indivisible capital.

UNRWA also operates in Gaza, the West Bank and elsewhere in the Middle East, providing schooling, health care, social services and shelter to millions of Palestinians.

“There is nothing more symbolic or justified than establishing the new IDF recruitment office and defense establishment institutions precisely on the ruins of the former UNRWA compound an organization whose employees took part in the massacres, murders, and atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists on October 7, Katz said.

Israel has alleged that some UNRWA staff were members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas and took part in the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, that killed about 1,200 Israelis and led to Israel’s war against Hamas, in which Gaza authorities say more than 71,000 Palestinians have been killed.

UNRWA has fired several staff members but said Israel had not provided evidence for all the allegations against its staff and its former chief, Philippe Lazzarini, accused Israel of conducting “a large-scale disinformation campaign” against it.

Makkah Route Initiative eases Hajj journey for elderly and disabled pilgrims

May 18, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Route Initiative is transforming the Hajj for thousands of pilgrims across Africa, highlighting the program’s humanitarian reach as Muslims worldwide prepare for the annual pilgrimage beginning on May 25.

Among the most poignant scenes reported by the Saudi Press Agency recently was that of a 100-year-old Moroccan pilgrim seen departing from Rabat-Sale International Airport, leaning on a walking stick as he quietly recited the talbiyah prayer before boarding his flight to Saudi Arabia.

Surrounded by Saudi Arabia staff providing special assistance, the centenarian completed passport procedures with ease, fulfilling what appeared to be a lifelong dream of performing Hajj after waiting for more than a century.

The Makkah Route Initiative, launched in 2017 under Saudi Vision 2030, allows pilgrims to complete immigration, customs and health procedures in their home countries before departure, enabling them to arrive in the Kingdom as though on a domestic flight.

At Dakar’s Blaise Diagne International Airport, Senegalese pilgrims described an atmosphere of joy and relief as the initiative made its debut in the West African nation this year.

Streamlined process

Mahmoud Harun Sala, imam of the grand mosque in the city of Velingara, said the streamlined process allowed pilgrims to focus on the spiritual significance of the journey rather than travel formalities.

“We are overcome with indescribable joy,” he said. “The mere thought of standing before the Holy Kaaba fills our hearts with elation.”

He added that easier access to the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah strengthened pilgrims’ faith and renewed “the spirit of Islam.”

The initiative also handles luggage tagging and transportation directly to pilgrims’ accommodation in Saudi Arabia, while modern technologies have been deployed to speed up processing.

In Ivory Coast, teacher Khadija Traore said she viewed her role guiding pilgrims during the Hajj season as both a humanitarian and spiritual responsibility.

Using her teaching experience to assist travelers — particularly elderly pilgrims — Traore praised the services provided through the Makkah Route Initiative at Felix Houphouet-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan.

She said the dedicated terminal significantly accelerated departure procedures and ensured a smooth transition for pilgrims traveling to the Kingdom.

The “peace and joy on the faces of pilgrims” was the most rewarding part of the mission, she said.

Praise from pilgrims with visual impairments

Meanwhile, Moroccan pilgrims with visual impairments departing from Rabat-Sale Airport expressed gratitude for what they described as compassionate and highly organized assistance provided by Saudi teams participating in the initiative.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior implements the initiative in cooperation with several government bodies, including the ministries of foreign affairs, health, Hajj and Umrah, and media, alongside authorities overseeing aviation, customs, data and digital services.

According to the SPA, the initiative has served more than 1.25 million pilgrims since its launch eight years ago.

Preparations for Hajj have intensified after the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah was sighted on Sunday evening, officially setting the pilgrimage to begin on May 25.

The Day of Arafah — considered the spiritual pinnacle of Hajj, when pilgrims gather on the plains of Mount Arafat in prayer and repentance — will fall on May 26, while Eid Al-Adha will begin the following day.

Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey.

The Nelson mill owner's family home given a new lease of life as an Islamic Centre

Amy Fenton

17 May 2026

The former home of two of the most influential local families in Nelson has been given a new lease of life after being converted into an Islamic Centre.

Spring Cottage in Manchester Road, thought to be the only surviving mill owner's home in Nelson, was constructed in the early nineteenth century and was originally the home of the Ecroyd family who owned Lomeshaye Mills and later the Moorby family who owned Spring Bank Mill. It later became the Spring Bank Hotel.

The Grade II listed building became the Groves Hotel and latterly the Hawthorns nightclub. It closed in the 1990s and fell into disrepair.

One man who lived in the hotel from 1972 to 1978 said in an online forum: "My mother was the lease holder from 1972 to about 1983. I was the bartender, disc jockey and cellarman and I lived in the cottage gatehouse."

Spring Cottage was purchased by the Madina Mosque group, set up in 1974, to replace their Forest Street Mosque. Mosque leaders had been looking for new premises after their base in three terraced properties became unsuitable.

The mosque's website states: "Madina Masjid had been searching for a new site for a number of years and had considered a variety of potential sites.

"Firstly, location and secondly, size were the main determinants in the selection of Spring Bank Cottage (formerly the Groves Hotel) as it is located in the heart of Whitefield ward, with the largest Muslim population in Pendle and yet also located on the main thoroughfare into and through Nelson making it readily accessible to all others within Nelson, Brierfield and beyond the M65."

Planned EU move to damage key Ukrainian export – FT

17 May, 2026

An EU proposal to drastically cut its steel import quota in response to global overcapacity and the shrinking of local manufacturing will hurt Kiev, Ukrainian manufacturers and officials have told the Financial Times.

The quota is expected to be cut by 47% on July 1, and the bloc will levy an additional 50% tariff on any steel imports above that amount. According to the EU authorities, the new regulation is meant to protect local manufacturers and address the “negative trade-related effects” of global overcapacity on its steel market. A surge in imports has already cost European steel mills thousands of jobs, forcing manufacturers to operate at reduced capacity.

The quota cut is expected to heavily affect Ukraine, which has emerged as a major supplier of steel to the EU. While Kiev has had free trade agreements with the bloc, the new quota will apply to all trading partners to comply with WTO rules.

“They will completely kill any possibility of Ukrainian companies to deliver on the European market,” Aleksandr Vodoviz, a senior executive with the Metinvest Group steel and mining company, told the FT.

The EU has been in negotiations with Kiev and some 20 other trading partners over a preferential rate of distributing the diminished quota, unnamed Ukrainian officials told the newspaper. Despite the apparent desire of the EU to mitigate the impact on Ukraine, it initially proposed a 70% reduction in imports compared to last year. While the EU Commission offered a quota of 713,000 tonnes to Kiev, it ultimately sold some 2.65 million tonnes to the bloc, which was Ukraine’s main market for steel.

The estimated loss of steel export revenues hovers around the €1 billion ($1.26 billion) mark, according to the FT’s sources. The sharp drop is bound to further affect Ukraine’s strained budget, which has become increasingly reliant on foreign aid and loans amid the conflict with Russia. In recent months, Kiev has been pressed into further hiking taxes and making fiscal reforms by its main financial backers, the EU and IMF, who have tied the changes to promises of more foreign aid.

Indian national killed in Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow

17 May, 2026

Three Indian nationals have been wounded and one was killed in a drone strike in Moscow Region, New Delhi’s embassy in Russia has said.

The incident occurred overnight amid a large-scale Ukrainian kamikaze drone raid on the Russian capital and its surroundings. The attack appears to have been the largest to affect the area in over a year.

The Indian Embassy described the victims as “workers” but did not disclose where the attack occurred. The diplomats are now “closely cooperating with the company's management and local authorities” and providing assistance to the victims.

“Today in the Moscow region, as a result of a drone attack, one citizen of India was killed and three others were injured. Embassy staff traveled to the scene of the incident and visited the victims in the hospital,” the mission said in a statement.

Separately, local Governor Andrey Vorobyev said at least three civilians were killed and several wounded across Moscow Region in the strikes. It was not immediately clear whether the tally included the Indian nationals.

Kiev has intensified long-range drone attacks on Russia since mid-March, sending fixed-wing UAVs in the hundreds on an almost daily basis. Moscow has condemned the strikes as “terrorist” attacks, alleging that they indiscriminately target civilian sites and infrastructure.

Russia has been retaliating with a long-range strike campaign of its own, targeting Ukraine’s dual-use infrastructure, including military manufacturing installations and energy facilities. Russia maintains it carefully selects the targets and never attacks purely civilian sites.

Domestic demand driving Russia’s economic growth – minister

17 May, 2026

Domestic demand is expected to spur economic growth in Russia, Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov has told RBK.

Despite facing economic challenges, the Russian economy has proven far more resilient to Western sanctions imposed over the Ukraine conflict than many analysts had initially predicted. Kremlin officials argue that the country has largely succeeded in reorienting trade toward new markets and adapting to foreign pressure.

In an interview published on Sunday, Reshetnikov said Russia’s economic growth remains largely inward-oriented, while the role of exports is diminishing. According to the minister, the trend is being supported by a steady increase in real disposable incomes, which are projected to rise by 1.6% this year.

Reshetnikov attributed the trend to the gradual reduction of the Russian Central Bank’s policy rate in recent months. According to the minister, lower rates are making bank deposits less attractive, freeing up more money for consumer spending, while lending activity is also recovering.

Reshetnikov told RBK that the Russian government has developed a comprehensive plan aimed at addressing global risks, including tighter sanctions, trade wars, and conflicts in the Middle East, while ensuring stable economic growth at home. The measures include additional state support for major investment projects and the creation of special economic zones.

The government is also seeking to boost labor productivity through the introduction of new technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation. Reshetnikov said the authorities plan to expand workforce participation by offering new internships, apprenticeships, and short-term training programs.

Reshetnikov added that the “balanced policy” pursued by the Central Bank and the government would allow inflation to gradually decline to a projected 5.2% by the end of 2026.

During a meeting with ministers on Friday, President Vladimir Putin pointed to “positive statistical data” for March, including a record-low unemployment rate of 2.2% and GDP growth of 1.8%.

UK police search for man after ‘Jews will be beheaded one by one’ slogan shouted on London street

May 17, 2026

British police have launched an urgent search for a man after a disturbing video surfaced online showing him threatening to “behead Jews one by one” on a street in east London.

The incident took place near a mosque on Whitechapel Road in Tower Hamlets, where a group of men were seen chanting pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel slogans while speaking into a camera.

In the footage, the man can be heard shouting: “The Jews, you’re going to get beheaded one by one, you dirty Jews.”

He also shouted slogans including “Fuck Israel” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

Police launch urgent probe

The Metropolitan Police said officers rushed to the area after the clip was reported online on Friday and are now trying to identify the suspect.

A police spokesperson said: “We understand that incidents like this cause significant concern and we take all reports incredibly seriously. Hate crime of any kind has no place in our communities.”

Authorities said investigations are ongoing and officers are carrying out urgent inquiries.

Jewish community ‘exceptionally concerned’

The Shomrim community security group described the footage as “horrific” and said the Orthodox Jewish community was deeply alarmed by the threats.

The organisation said it was working closely with police and that authorities were treating the matter “very seriously.”

Another man visible in the video appeared to attempt to stop the speaker from continuing, though it remains unclear whether the two knew each other.

Rising concerns over antisemitism in UK

The incident comes amid rising concerns over antisemitism in Britain following a series of attacks and threats targeting Jewish communities.

Earlier this month, London’s Metropolitan Police announced the formation of a new specialist “community protection team” comprising 100 additional officers tasked with protecting Jewish neighbourhoods and sites.

Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley had earlier warned of a increasing “pandemic” of antisemitism across the UK and said hundreds of extra officers were needed across London.

US manufacturing ‘fraudulent case’ for invasion – Cuban foreign minister

18 May, 2026

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla has accused the US of fabricating a pretext for a potential invasion following an Axios report claiming that the island had acquired attack drones from Russia and Iran.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump had suggested that Cuba could become Washington’s next target after the conflict with Iran.

Rodriguez Parrilla described the Axios report as an attempt to concoct a “fraudulent case to justify the ruthless economic war against the Cuban people and, eventually, military aggression.” He added that Cuba “neither threatens nor desires war.”

“Certain media outlets are playing along, spreading slanderous claims and publishing insinuations leaked by the US government,” the minister said.

The US imposed an oil embargo on the Caribbean island in February, prompting blackouts and fuel shortages, and has repeatedly threatened military action.

On Sunday, the US-based outlet Axios cited classified intelligence reports alleging that Cuba had acquired more than 300 drones since 2023 and had discussed possible attacks on the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, American warships, and Key West Air Force Base in Florida.

A senior US official told Axios that the White House views Cuba’s potential use of drones as “a growing threat.”

The outlet added, however, that US officials do not consider Cuba an imminent threat and do not believe Havana is actively planning an attack.

Russia, which has maintained close ties with Cuba since Soviet times, including a long history of military cooperation, did not confirm supplying drones to Havana. Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the US blockade of Cuba as unacceptable, while the Russian Foreign Ministry has said Moscow is prepared to provide the island with “political, diplomatic, and material support.”

Last week, CIA Director John Ratcliffe paid a rare visit to Havana, reportedly pressing for reforms. According to media reports, Washington has demanded that Cuba liberalize its political system and transition from socialism to a market-based economy.

Trump’s Truth Social spree features aliens, space warfare and Iran strike memes

May 18, 2026

As tensions with Iran continued to escalate and stalled nuclear negotiations showed little sign of progress, US President Donald Trump launched a posting spree on Truth Social, flooding the platform with AI-generated images featuring aliens, missile strikes and outer space warfare.

In total, Trump shared around 25 posts on the social media platform over several hours as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to simmer following months of conflict across the Middle East. Among the images was an AI-generated picture showing Trump walking alongside an alien figure, with Secret Service agents visible in the background. Another depicted the US President in outer space beneath the title “Space Force”, surrounded by satellites while seemingly overseeing missile strikes from orbit.

One image showed a map of the Middle East with arrows pointed directly at Iran, while another featured a US drone striking Iranian fast boats alongside the caption: “BYE BYE, Fast boats”. Trump also reposted an edited map portraying Venezuela as the “51st US state”, and another mocking Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries as “low IQ” while depicting money being thrown around his district.

The online blitz came as Trump escalated his rhetoric against Iran amid stalled negotiations over sanctions relief, uranium stockpiles and compensation linked to the regional conflict. “For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won't be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.

Iran swiftly rejected Washington’s latest conditions for talks and demanded sanctions relief, compensation for war damages and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz before negotiations could resume. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also accused the US and Israel of attempting to destabilise Iran during the conflict by backing “terrorist groups”.

Trump’s sudden fascination with aliens and outer space follows his administration’s recent release of previously classified UFO and UAP files. Earlier this month, Trump claimed it was his “honor” to direct the publication of government records linked to “Alien and Extraterrestrial Life” and “Unidentified Flying Objects”.

Fighter jet crews parachute safely after collision at US air show

May 18, 2026

Nardine Saad

Four crew members are in stable condition after two fighter jets collided mid-air during a US air show, officials say.

All the aircrew safely ejected from US Navy EA18-G jets that were performing an aerial demonstration when they crashed, a US Navy spokesperson told the BBC. It is unclear if they were injured.

The dramatic incident happened on Sunday, during the second and final day of the Gunfighter Skies air show, 2 miles (3.2km) northwest of Idaho's Mountain Home Air Force Base.

A fire erupted and the base was briefly locked down as the rest of the air show was cancelled. An investigation is underway.

"The aircrew involved in the incident are in stable condition," Mountain Air Force Base Gunfighters said in statement posted on social media on Sunday.

"Thank you to all our guests for your patience and compassion, which has allowed us to quickly and safely respond to the incident," the statement said.

The Navy spokesperson said the crew members were being checked by medical personnel.

The EA-18G Growlers were assigned to an electronic attack squadron from Washington state. The US Navy says each of those jets cost about $67m (£50.3m).

Kim Sykes of Silver Wings of Idaho, which helped organise the air show, told a local CBS affiliate that no-one at the military base was hurt.

The Gunfighter Skies air show was last held in 2018, when a glider pilot died in an accident.

The BBC has contacted the air force base and event organiser for comment.

Trump's White House ballroom loses federal funding proposed by Senate Republicans

May 18, 2026

Nardine Saad

A US official has struck down security funding allotted for President Trump's White House ballroom project from a proposed spending package, in a win for Democrats.

The Senate rule-keeper ruled against the use of taxpayer funds in the bill on Saturday, after Democrats argued that security money doesn't belong in it.

Trump has said private donors will fund the $400m ballroom as Republicans have sought to use a portion of $1bn in taxpayer funds for Secret Service security upgrades.

Republicans are seeking the funds to bolster presidential safety following a shooting at a gala Trump attended in April at a hotel. The administration also tried to fast-track the project after the incident.

Republicans, who hold the majority in the Senate, have used complex budget rules - known as the budget reconciliation process - to try to pass bills without Democratic support.

Their latest sprawling package to fund immigration agencies under the Department of Homeland Security also includes a $1bn provision for security funds dedicated to the overhaul of the East Wing of the White House, which includes Trump's plans for the ballroom.

Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough, who has acted as a referee in the upper chamber of US Congress since 2012, deemed the provision out of order on Saturday, Democrats said.

She determined that the provision funds activities beyond the jurisdiction of the Senate Judiciary Committee and does not comply with a procedure that prevents extraneous non-budgetary provisions, known as the Byrd rule.

"Republicans tried to make taxpayers foot the bill for Trump's billion-dollar ballroom. Senate Democrats fought back — and blew up their first attempt," Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X on Saturday.

"Now Ballroom Republicans say they're going back to the drawing board to try again. And Senate Democrats will be ready to stop them again.

Schumer added: "Americans don't want a ballroom. They don't need a ballroom. And they sure as hell should not be forced to pay for one."

Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, the top Democrat on the committee, said that he expects Republicans to change the bill "to appease Trump" and that Democrats are prepared to challenge any changes to the bill.

"Redraft. Refine. Resubmit. None of this is abnormal during a Byrd process," Ryan Wrasse, a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, wrote on X.

Construction crews tore down the storied East Wing in October as Trump pushed plans for what he called the "finest ballroom of its kind, anywhere in the world".

The National Trust for Preservation has sued the administration to block further construction, arguing that the tear-down and changes are against the law without congressional approval. An appeals court ruled in April that construction of the underground and above ground portions will be allowed to continue.

The ballroom project is one of several ways that Trump, who previously worked in real estate and construction, is trying to update the US capital.

At the White House, he has added gold details to the Oval Office and paved over the presidential residence's rose garden to install a patio reminiscent of his Florida club, Mar-A-Lago.

He also retitled Washington DC institutions, such as the Kennedy Center and Institute of Peace to add his name and has announced plans for a 250-ft triumphal arch near the Arlington National Cemetery.

New York rail commuter chaos may be averted as unions and management head to mediation

May 18, 2026

Grace Eliza Goodwin

Management and labour unions for workers on North America's busiest rail line have been summoned to mediation after a strike threatened the morning commute for hundreds of thousands of passengers in the New York City region.

Unions representing about 3,500 workers on New York's Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) launched the strike on Saturday after failing to reach a deal with rail management over pay and work rules.

It was the first strike on the LIRR in over 30 years, following a two-day stoppage in 1994.

A federal labour agency stepped in on Sunday to help resume bargaining between the unions and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) had warned that there is "no substitute" for the railway and urged commuters to work remotely on Monday if possible as it warned commuters of "severe congestion and delays".

The National Mediation Board - the federal agency that governs railroads and airlines - summoned the two sides to mediation late on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.

"Because of your solidarity and strength, your Long Island Rail Road Union Coalition is back at the bargaining table right now with MTA and LIRR management. Your pressure is working. Your massive turnout on the picket lines is working," IAM Union, one of five in the coalition on strike, said on Sunday.

The shutdown has already affected travel and events across the region. The New York Mets baseball team warned fans attending weekend games at Citi Field in Queens to expect transport difficulties.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul had urged unions and MTA to come to an agreement, warning that an extended shutdown would cause widespread disruption.

The coalition of unions representing LIRR workers says it is seeking improved pay and conditions after years without wage increases.

MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber defended the agency's position, saying it could not "responsibly make a deal that implodes MTA's budget".

Canadian from hantavirus-hit cruise ship tests positive

May 18, 2026

A Canadian who sailed on the cruise ship MV Hondius which was hit by a hantavirus outbreak in April has tested positive for the disease, officials in the province of British Columbia say.

The individual, one of four people isolating on Vancouver Island after leaving the ship, had developed mild symptoms.

The province's senior health officer said the four had not had any contact with the public since arriving in Canada.

The case brings the total number of infections to 11, all among cruise passengers. Three people who travelled on the ship have died, with two confirmed to have had the virus.

British Columbia health officer Bonnie Henry said the person's test came back as a presumptive positive on Friday, meaning that it still remains to be confirmed by a national microbiology lab.

"Clearly, this is not what we hoped for, but it is what we planned for," she said, quoted by national broadcaster CBC.

"I want to emphasise that hantavirus is a very different virus than the other respiratory viruses that we've been dealing with - like Covid, like influenza, like measles - and it remains one that we do not consider to have pandemic potential," Dr Henry added.

Of the six Canadians who were on the Dutch ship, two are self-isolating at their home in Ontario.

Two more couples are isolating on Vancouver Island, one from British Columbia and the other from Yukon. The person who tested positive is from Yukon.

None of the other five have tested positive so far.

The cruise ship, which set sail from Argentina on 1 April, docked in Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands, less than a week ago, allowing its passengers to leave and go into isolation.

The ship is due to arrive in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Monday, and remaining staff on board will disembark, its owner Oceanwide Expeditions said, adding that there were currently no symptomatic individuals on board.

The WHO has recommended 42 days of isolation for each person. The Canadians were initially required to isolate for 21 days but Dr Henry said that timeline could now be adjusted.

Hantaviruses are usually carried by rodents, but human transmission of the Andes strain - which the WHO believes some of the ship's passengers contracted in South America - is possible.

Symptoms can include fever, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and shortness of breath.

Officials say the risk of a major outbreak is very low.

Merz and Trump weaponize each other’s problems

17 May, 2026

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told an audience of local Catholics in the southwestern city of Wuerzburg that he no longer advises young people to travel to the United States for work and study, citing the rapidly changing “social climate” in the country.

Merz, who has served as Chancellor of Germany since May 2025, said “I would not recommend to my children today that they go to the US to get an education and to work” – a comment that attracted robust applause from the audience.

The chancellor’s concern focused primarily on the job market in the US, saying “the social climate that has suddenly developed” in the US had become a source of concern and argued that “even the best educated in America have great difficulty in finding a job.”

“I am a great admirer of America,” Merz added, eliciting laughter from the audience, “but right now my admiration is not increasing.”

New data shows that the German chancellor is not wrong in his prognosis of the US labor market. For the first time since Gallup began measuring the life evaluation of the American workforce, more US workers are struggling in their lives (49%) than thriving (46%).

“This contrasts with 2022 and 2023, when the reverse was true, with the share of US employees considered ‘thriving’ staying in the low-to-mid 50s – a mark of relative resilience after pandemic disruptions. After staying steady between 57% and 60% from 2009 to 2019, the thriving rate among workers fell to 55% in 2020 before rebounding in 2021 then steadily decreasing after that,” Gallup reported.

So yes, Merz is certainly right; the United States has seen better days on the labor front. Speaking on the topic of crime, which Merz just briefly touched upon, the United States reported the worst crime rates of any developed country in the West.

Americans are 26 times more likely to be shot compared to their counterparts in high-income countries, according to the Brady Center. Every day, 327 people are shot in the United States, of that number 117 will die from their injuries. Firearm suicides in the US account for 35% of all the world’s suicides, Brady found, despite the US making up 4% of the world’s population. It’s a well-known fact that America has more guns than people – there were 67 million more firearms than people in 2023.

The situation with regards to sexual violence is no less disturbing. Someone in the US is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds, while nearly 1 in 2 adult women and 1 in 4 adult men in the US have experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact in their lifetime. However, it is estimated that only about 25% to 40% of all rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police.

The situation in Germany with regards to crime, while not as bad as the United States, is steadily worsening with each passing year and should give leaders like Merz tremendous pause. Germany has experienced a significant increase in reported crime since 2023, with police statistics recording a rise in total offenses to nearly six million. Violent crime reached a 15-year high in 2025, while sexual offenses and politically motivated crimes saw notable spikes.

Violent crimes, such as grievous bodily harm, robberies, and knife attacks, have grown significantly. Major cities like Berlin and Frankfurt have seen unprecedented spikes in organized criminal violence and gun-related incidents. Meanwhile, Germany has smashed all of its previous records for shoplifting in 2024. An annual survey of 98 retailers estimates a 3% increase on the year before – amounting to some €4.95 billion ($5.84 billion) in total losses.

Much of Germany’s problems are the result of mass migration; millions of illegal immigrants have poured into the country over the last two decades. Now Germany is experiencing a massive demographic shift. Since 2005, the number of residents with a migration background has grown by 67%, jumping from 13 million to 21.8 million.

In December, the White House warned that Europe faces “civilizational erasure” within 20 years and questioned whether certain nations like Germany and France can remain reliable allies, in a new strategy document that puts a particular focus on the continent. The 33-page National Security Strategy sees the US leader outline his vision for the world where the US remains “the greatest and most successful nation in human history.”

Merz rose to power in 2025 as a staunch Transatlanticist but has since leveled criticism of the United States, Germany’s most powerful ally. Trump, in response, said the German chancellor should focus on fixing his own “broken country” as the United States is preparing to remove 5,000 troops from Germany as the two countries go through the worst bilateral breakup since World War II. It’s going to require a lot of work for the two countries to look past their separate problems and see each other in a new light.

Nigeria Military, US Forces Kill Over 20 ISIS Fighters In Borno Airstrikes

May 18, 2026

The Nigerian military has announced the killing of more than 20 suspected ISIS/ISWAP fighters during fresh coordinated airstrike operations carried out with the support of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Borno State.

The operation reportedly targeted terrorist enclaves around Metele, a community in northern Borno frequently attacked by insurgents.

Naija News reports that the development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the operation followed intelligence reports indicating the movement and gathering of terrorist fighters within the area.

“The Defence Headquarters, in close coordination with United States Africa Command, wish to update the general public on the continuation of coordinated operations against ISIS militants across the North-East Nigeria, with additional air strike operations successfully executed in the general area of Metele,” the statement read.

The military said multiple airstrikes were launched on identified terrorist positions, leading to the killing of more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters.

The latest operation comes days after the reported killing of notorious ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, during another joint operation involving Nigerian and American forces.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the operations are aimed at disrupting terrorist networks, restricting their movement and preventing them from establishing safe havens within Nigerian territory.

“The ongoing operations follow the neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and are part of sustained efforts to disrupt terrorist networks, remove them from the battlefield and deny the terrorists any safe haven within Nigeria,” Uba stated.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to combating insurgency and protecting the country’s territorial integrity.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation,” the military said.

“Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated. There will be no safe haven for all terrorists anywhere in Nigeria.”

Metele and surrounding communities in northern Borno remain among the major conflict zones affected by insurgency linked to Boko Haram and ISIS/ISWAP fighters.

Terrorists Must Not Have A Place In Yorubaland – Afenifere Reacts To Oyo School Abductions

May 17, 20

By Richard Ogunsile

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed concern over last Friday’s coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, warning that the South-West must act urgently to prevent terrorists and kidnappers from gaining a foothold in the region.

The group said the attack, which led to the abduction of pupils and school officials, had deepened fears over the spread of violent crimes in Yorubaland.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere said its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, was deeply disturbed by the incident, especially as it happened in the same week he marked his 100th birthday.

Ajayi said Fasoranti “was saddened to hear of this unfortunate incident which occurred the same week he marked his 100th year on earth.”

The elder statesman sympathised with the victims and their families, while also praying for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries during the attack.

Naija News recalls that the attack occurred on Friday, May 15, 2026, in Oriire LGA, where armed men reportedly invaded three schools.

The affected schools were Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School. No fewer than 45 pupils were reported abducted during the attack, according to reports from the affected communities.

The incident has caused tension in Oyo State, with residents and parents calling for urgent action to rescue the victims and prevent similar attacks in other communities.

International reports also described the Oyo incident as unusual for the South-West, noting that school abductions in Nigeria have more frequently occurred in the northern region. Police also said three suspects had been detained in connection with the attack, while authorities were still trying to determine the full number of abducted children.

The attack came around the same period as another school abduction in Borno State, raising fresh concerns about the safety of schools across the country.

The Associated Press reported that more than 80 children were missing following attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno states.

Afenifere Faults South-West Governors

Afenifere said recent attacks and abductions in the South-West and parts of Kwara State showed that terrorists and kidnappers were becoming more daring.

The group said the incidents “reinforced growing fears that the terrorists appeared determined to overrun the South-West and, ultimately, the entire south.”

Ajayi criticised the response of South-West governors, saying their recent actions did not show sufficient urgency in addressing the security threat facing the region.

He said the actions of the governors “do not suggest that they appreciate the enormity of the responsibility they shoulder concerning the security of their land.”

The group questioned what had become of earlier security measures announced by some states in the region, including resolutions by the six South-West governors, the CCTV infrastructure reportedly erected in Ogun State, surveillance aircraft purchased by the Oyo State Government, and security measures announced by the Ondo State Government.

Afenifere said the primary duty of government remained the security and welfare of the people, adding that governors in the South-West must show stronger commitment to protecting lives and property.

The statement read in part, “In view of the fact that the primary duty of government is the security and welfare of the people, governments in the South-Western states of Nigeria must prove that they are alive to their constitutionally assigned responsibilities.

“Everything must be done to ensure that no area in the region experiences an attack by kidnappers and bandits anymore.”

The organisation called on the governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states to place the security of residents above every other consideration.

It added that terrorists and kidnappers must not be allowed to operate freely in any part of Yorubaland.

“Every necessary step must be taken to ensure that terrorists do not have a place, not to talk of a foothold, in Yorubaland – from Lagos up to Kogi, including Edo and Delta states,” Afenifere said.

Despite its criticism of the regional security response, Afenifere commended the swift visit of the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to Oyo State after the attack.

Naija News reports that the Inspector-General of Police visited communities in Oriire LGA on Saturday following the deadly attack and abduction incident, where he expressed concern and condoled with the families of those affected.

Afenifere also welcomed the inauguration of the Police’s Violent Crime Response Unit, expressing hope that the initiative would help prevent crimes such as kidnapping, banditry and other violent attacks.

The group said while the Federal Government has the responsibility to protect Nigerians, governors also have a sacred duty to use the resources available to them to secure their people.

It maintained that the rising insecurity in the South-West required urgent, coordinated and practical measures, not mere statements after attacks had occurred.

Afenifere added that governments at all levels must move beyond promises and ensure that schools, rural communities and highways are protected from kidnappers and armed gangs.

‘Your Government Is Too Slow’ – Atiku Blasts Tinubu Over Xenophobic Violence In South Africa

May 17, 2026

By Oladipo Abiola

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the response of the federal government of Nigeria to the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Speaking in a statement on Sunday issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is always slow in responding to issues affecting its citizens, including the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Atiku said that while Nigeria likes to pride itself as the giant of Africa, other countries are always quick to take decisive action on matters, while Nigeria always reacts instead of leading in moments of continental crisis.

He added that while smaller nations like Ghana have acted decisively in protecting their citizens, by evacuating over 300 distressed citizens following the latest xenophobic threats, Abuja appeared paralysed, reactive, and stripped of the urgency the moment demanded.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria, a country that prides itself as the leader of the Black world and the giant of Africa, once again found itself reacting instead of leading in a moment of continental crisis.

“When the first signs of danger emerged, smaller African nations acted with clarity, compassion, and urgency. Ghana moved decisively. Others issued strong advisories and activated protective mechanisms for their nationals. But Nigeria, whose citizens have historically borne the brunt of xenophobic violence in South Africa, moved with the lethargy that has become the defining trademark of this administration,” he said.

Too Slow, Inefficient

Atiku added that the response of the Nigerian government to the xenophobic attack is belated and short of expectations.

According to him, Nigerians in South Africa have had to endure cycles of intimidation, looting, harassment, and xenophobic hostility that have destroyed businesses, endangered lives, and left families gripped by fear.

The 2027 presidential aspirant argued that Nigeria only “Summon diplomats, issue cautious statements, and retreat into bureaucratic inertia until the next crisis erupts.”

He added that, “This is not about whether the government eventually responded. It is about whether that response reflected the urgency, seriousness, and leadership expected of a responsible government. By every objective standard, it did not”

“A government that waits until other nations have taken the lead before acting sends a dangerous signal. It is frankly humiliating that Ghana, with far fewer diplomatic resources and citizens abroad, projected stronger leadership and clearer compassion than Nigeria in this moment.

Way Forward

Atiku submitted that the Nigerian government must take concrete steps, including issuing a robust and unambiguous travel advisory, activating efficient evacuation arrangements for willing citizens, intensifying diplomatic engagement with South African authorities, and rallying the African Union towards a lasting continental framework against recurring xenophobic violence.

He specifically called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to shed what he described as its habitual slow-footedness and rise to the demands of a moment in which both lives and national dignity were at stake.

“Africa cannot continue to preach unity while tolerating periodic persecution of fellow Africans. And Nigeria cannot continue to posture as a continental leader while behaving like a reluctant observer,” Atiku said.

Former Ivorian president condemns imprisonment of political activists

May 18, 2026

Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo used his platform in the 4th edition of the Renaissance Festival in the town of Songon M’Brathé to condemn the imprisonment of political activists.

The political and cultural gathering was organised by his African People's Party – Côte d'Ivoire (PPA-CI) party which this week re-elected the 80-year-old as its president.

"We have many comrades in prison. We must not only think of them, but we must work to ensure they are released,” Gbagbo said.

Last October, an Ivorian court sentenced dozens of people to prison for taking part in banned demonstrations against the exclusion of candidates, including Gbagbo, in elections.

"The democracy we have fought for and continue to fight for is precisely so that everyone can express their opinion,” Gbagbo told a large crowd of supporters at Saturday’s gathering.

“But if, as soon as someone expresses their opinion, you put them in prison, that is no longer normal,” he said.

The PPA-CI party boycotted the October 2025 polls and now has no MPs and just a handful of mayors, while his long-time rival Alassane Ouattara won the presidential vote.

Gbagbo came to office in 2000. But his refusal to concede defeat to Ouattara in the 2010 election prompted a civil war in which more than 3,000 people were killed.

Ousted in 2011, he returned home from exile in 2021 after his 2019 acquittal by the International Criminal Court of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Last year, the former president, who soon turns 81 at the end of the month, said he planned to retire from politics.

His future political career will likely depend

WHO declares Ebola outbreak an emergency of international concern

May 18, 2026

The World Health Organisation on Sunday declared an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring Uganda an emergency of international concern.

The global health body warned the true scale of the number of cases and spread was not clear but stopped short of declaring a pandemic emergency, the highest alert level introduced in 2024.

It said the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, puts countries sharing land borders with DRC at high risk for further circulation.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said on Saturday that a total of 88 people have died from the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever, with at least 336 suspected cases.

The strain - which was first identified in 2007 - has also killed a Congolese national in neighbouring Uganda, officials said Saturday.

Medical aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said it was preparing a "large-scale response", calling the rapid spread of the outbreak "extremely concerning".

"The Bundibugyo strain has no vaccine, no specific treatment," DR Congo's Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said.

"I would like to remind you that this strain has a very high fatality rate, which can reach as high as 50 percent. So the sooner we can treat you, the sooner we can resolve the issue," he said.

Vaccines are only available for the Zaire strain, which was identified in 1976 and has a higher fatality rate of 60-90 per cent.

Health officials on Friday confirmed the latest outbreak in the DRC’s north-eastern Ituri province which borders Uganda and South Sudan.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, haemorrhaging, and vomiting.

"The number of cases and deaths we are seeing in such a short timeframe, combined with the spread across several health zones and now across the border, is extremely concerning," says Trish Newport, MSF Emergency Programme Manager.

It is the 17th Ebola outbreak to hit the DRC, and officials warned of a big risk of it spreading across the region where there is high mobility due to mining and other commercial activities.

The WHO said the high positivity rate of initial samples together with increasing reports of suspected cases, "all point towards a potentially much larger outbreak than what is currently being detected and reported".

It advised nations to activate their national disaster and emergency-management mechanisms and undertake screenings at borders and main internal roads.

Ebola, believed to have originated in bats, is a deadly viral disease spread through direct contact with bodily fluids. It can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.

The incubation period can last up to 21 days.

South Sudan marks SPLA Day for first time since 2013 civil war

Celebrations took place at the national stadium in Juba on Saturday as South Sudan marked the 43rd anniversary of the creation of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.

The founding of the SPLA in 1983 saw the start of Sudan’s second civil war which ultimately led to South Sudan’s independence in July 2011.

It the first commemoration since the start of the 2013 conflict between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) government and the SPLM-in-opposition.

"On this day, we remember the brave forces of Battalion 105, who fired the first bullet. And that began our revolution,” President Salva Kiir Mayardit told the gathered crowds.

“As we mark the 43rd anniversary of our movement today, we also remember the sacrifices of our martyrs, who gave their lives during the long struggle."

The commemoration comes amid renewed clashes between the army and forces loyal to Kiir’s long-time rival and former First Vice-President Riek Machar, stirring fears of a return to civil war.

Addressing the gathering, the chief of the South Sudan People's Defence Forces, Santino Deng Wol, said they did not want to “hear the bullet anywhere”.

"We don’t want random fighting, and I want to assure the people of South Sudan that I will provide you with security and protect our border," he said.

The 2013 to 2018 civil war between Kiir and Machar's forces ended in a peace deal which saw the creation of a unity government which has been unravelling over the past year.

Machar was detained by Kiir’s forces and placed under house arrest in Juba in March last year. He was subsequently suspended as vice-president.

In September, he was charged with murder, treason, and crimes against humanity relating to a March attack by a militia allegedly linked to him, which killed 250 soldiers and a general.

His party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO), has denounced the charges as a "political witch-hunt”.

Amnesty Raises Alarm Over Abduction Of 82 Pupils In Borno, Oyo

May 17, 2026

By Richard Ogunsile

Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has expressed concern over the recent abduction of dozens of schoolchildren by armed groups in parts of northern and southern Nigeria, calling on authorities to urgently rescue the victims and strengthen security around schools.

The organisation described the incidents as “alarming,” warning that repeated attacks on schools were deepening the country’s education crisis and exposing children to grave danger.

Naija News reports that in a statement issued on Sunday, Amnesty International disclosed that at least 82 schoolchildren were abducted between May 13 and May 15, 2026, during separate attacks in Borno State and Oyo State.

According to the rights group, 42 pupils were kidnapped on May 13 and 14 after armed men attacked schools in Askira Uba and Chibok Local Government Areas of Borno State.

The organisation said the affected schools in the North-East included Primary and Government Day Junior Secondary School, Mussa, as well as Local Authority School in Askira Uba.

Amnesty International further stated that another 40 schoolchildren were abducted on May 15 after gunmen invaded communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

It identified the affected schools in Oyo as Ahoro-Esinele and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele.

The organisation urged the Nigerian government and security agencies to take swift and decisive action to ensure the safe return of the victims.

“The Nigerian authorities must take immediate and decisive action to investigate these incidents, rescue the victims safely, and take more concrete prevention measures to stop endless targeting of schools and children,” the statement read.

Amnesty International lamented that some of the abducted victims were as young as two years old, describing the situation as disturbing and unacceptable.

The group warned that persistent attacks on educational institutions were discouraging school attendance, particularly in vulnerable communities already grappling with insecurity.

“Many abducted children and teachers are never released by their abductors. The possibility of abduction is forcing millions of children to abandon education,” the organisation stated.

The rights organisation also accused authorities of repeatedly failing to properly investigate school abductions and prosecute those responsible.

According to Amnesty International, victims and their families are often left without justice, accountability, or adequate support after such traumatic incidents.

The group argued that the inability of authorities to guarantee citizens’ safety amounted to a violation of Nigeria’s obligations under the Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The latest incidents have again raised concerns over the safety of schools across the country, especially in rural communities where security presence remains weak despite repeated attacks on students and teachers.

Malaysia expands Muslim-friendly standards

By S Puvaneswary

18 May, 2026

The Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) is advancing the global expansion of Malaysia’s Muslim-friendly tourism standards through a new international partnership.

The lead agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), tasked with developing the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH) ecosystem, has formalised this effort through a strategic collaboration with RusQuality, Russia’s halal assurance body.

At the 17th International Islamic Forum Russia–Islamic World: KazanForum in Tatarstan, the two organisations signed a Memorandum of Mutual Recognition (MOMR) on May 14 to align Malaysia’s and Russia’s guidelines for Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality services.

The agreement grants both parties reciprocal rights to use each other’s official logos and branding, creating a unified identity for Muslim-friendly standards across both destinations.

ITC director-general Mohammad Faisal Abu Suaib Khan said in a statement: “We are honoured to represent Malaysia in this historic collaboration, which further extends the global reach of the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition programme. When Malaysia initially developed MFAR, our goal was to create a sense of home and peace of mind for Muslim travellers, no matter where they landed.

“Russia has demonstrated sophisticated work in the halal sector through RusQuality, and we are proud to work alongside such a capable partner for Malaysia. By aligning our standards, we wish to simplify businesses for both countries to work together and succeed. The US$235 billion-worth Muslim international tourist market is huge, and having both parties on board will mobilise greater liquidity through the tourism economy in both destinations.”

Mohammad Faisal also highlighted the broader appeal of Muslim-friendly standards, emphasising that “as travellers become more conscious of their choices, Muslim-friendly standards – rooted in universal values such as cleanliness, safety, and family-oriented services – will see growing demand, not only among Muslim travellers but also among those who value these principles”.

“ITC is ready to work with other destinations to help them strategise to leverage on this global tourism potential through our standards, training, and research.”

Maxim Aleksandrovich Protasov, head of ANO Russian Quality System / RusQuality, said: “This partnership with ITC reflects our deep confidence in Malaysia’s MFAR framework as a global benchmark for Muslim-friendly travel. Harmonising our standards strengthens Russia’s position as a premier Muslim-friendly destination and equips our industry players to capture the immense potential of the Muslim-friendly travel sector and the greater halal economy. Our hope is that this partnership will facilitate a new era of seamless travel, giving Muslim tourists the same level of confidence and assurance in Russia that they experience in Malaysia.”

Indonesia Sets Eid al-Adha Holiday for May 27

Iman Rahman Cahyadi

 May 17, 2026

Jakarta. The Indonesian government on Sunday officially designated May 27 as the date for this year’s Eid al-Adha holiday following a religious deliberation session involving Islamic scholars and clerics.

Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays in Islam, is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice. Muslims who are financially able traditionally sacrifice livestock such as cows or goats, with the meat distributed to poorer communities.

“It has been agreed that 10 Zulhijah, or Eid al-Adha, will fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026,” Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said during the government’s Isbat meeting, or official moon-sighting and religious calendar session, in Jakarta.

Nasaruddin said the decision would serve as the official guideline for Indonesian Muslims in beginning the series of Zulhijah religious observances, including voluntary fasting ahead of Eid al-Adha, in a coordinated manner nationwide.

“We all hope this momentum can strengthen unity and togetherness among Muslims,”

New Sharia Bank Set to Launch This Year, OJK Says

May 17, 2026

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Executive Head of Banking Supervision at the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Dian Ediana Rae, expects a new Islamic commercial bank (BUS) resulting from a spin-off to be established this year. This new sharia bank is intended to strengthen the national Islamic banking structure within the Core Capital Bank Group 2 (KBMI 2).

Currently, three large Islamic banks occupy the KBMI 2 and 3 categories. Banks in the KBMI 2 group possess core capital ranging from Rp6 trillion to Rp14 trillion. Meanwhile, core capital for KBMI 3 ranges from Rp14 trillion to Rp70 trillion.

In a written statement, Dian explained that industry consolidation also continues in the Sharia rural bank (BPR) sector through the merger of 21 Sharia BPRs. OJK targets this process to produce nine stronger, more efficient, and competitive Sharia BPRs.

These steps, she noted, further bolster the Islamic banking structure, implementing the first pillar of the Roadmap for the Development and Strengthening of Indonesian Islamic Banking (RP3SI): Strengthening the Structure and Resilience of the Islamic Banking Industry.

"As of March 2026, the Islamic banking industry has recorded double-digit asset growth, reaching 10.49 percent annually (year on year/yoy) or Rp1,061.61 trillion," said Dian in a written statement, as quoted from Antara.

Furthermore, Dian revealed that Islamic banking financing grew by 9.82 percent (yoy) to Rp716.4 trillion, surpassing national growth. Meanwhile, third-party fund (DPK) growth in the sector reached 11.14 percent (yoy), totaling Rp811.76 trillion.

The financing-to-deposit ratio (FDR) has also continued to rise in recent years, reaching 87.65 percent. This trend aligns with the increasing contribution of Islamic banking to the real sector.

Strong financing quality is reflected in the gross non-performing financing (NPF) and net NPF ratios, which stand at 2.28 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively.

She explained that Islamic banking support for the real sector and community economic empowerment is being enhanced through broader financing access for MSMEs. This is evidenced by the total distribution of MSME financing by the Islamic banking industry, which has reached Rp217.86 trillion.

As part of his official duties, he held meetings with deans, department heads, directors of different offices and the registrar in charge yesterday.

During the meetings, he expressed his commitment to advancing Duet through engineering and technological education, research and industry-academia collaboration with support from all stakeholders.

At least 23 Duet students in Gazipur were injured yesterday in a clash between two groups over the appointment of the VC.

Before joining Duet, Prof Iqbal served as vice chancellor of North East University Bangladesh.

PM assures action on the cases against journalists

18 May 2026

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday assured the Editors’ Council that he would discuss with the home ministry the issue of harassment cases filed against journalists.

He made the assurance after several council members raised the matter during a meeting with him at the Secretariat.

The editors maintained that while proper investigations into allegations against journalists and due legal process are necessary for justice, cases filed deliberately to harass them are “not acceptable in any way.”

The Editors’ Council handed over a list of 282 journalists to the prime minister, highlighting that 94 of them have been accused in murder cases.

Any specific, evidence-based allegation against a journalist must go through transparent judicial processes under existing laws, the council said.

The PM said the government intends to act as a facilitator, rather than a regulator, of the media.

He said strong media are an essential part of the state and that his government would remain committed to that principle, according to a press release signed by council President Nurul Kabir and General Secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud.

Briefing reporters at the Secretariat after the meeting, the Editors’ Council members shared details of their discussion with the prime minister.

The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam said that while the list might not fully capture the situation and some names may have been left out, it serves as a starting point.

“We presented the list and firmly told the prime minister that filing such cases against journalists is not a good sign for a democratic country, and it also damages the government’s image,” Anam said.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon told reporters that the prime minister echoed the editors’ concerns and had already instructed him to take the necessary steps.

According to the press release, the council told the PM that Bangladesh’s media-related laws are outdated and create barriers to press freedom, undermining the country’s image internationally.

In particular, Form “B” of a newspaper declaration requires publishers to pledge not to publish anything “against the interests of the government” or any “objectionable” content. This binds them to the Printing Presses and Publications (Declaration and Registration) Act, 1973.

The Editors’ Council demanded the immediate repeal of this provision, saying it contradicts the constitution and has an “undemocratic character”.

The council also raised the urgent need for a media commission to pursue reforms or to strengthen the Press Council. In response, the prime minister directed the information minister to complete the relevant evaluations by June so the government could take visible steps by July, according to the press release.

The prime minister emphasised the importance of a self-regulation framework for the media, while the council informed him of its initiative to adopt a code of conduct for journalists by July.

The Editors’ Council unanimously thanked the prime minister, saying there had been no state-level intervention in media operations since the BNP-led government took office, the minister added.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury and the prime minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman also attended the meeting.

Among the council’s executive committee members, President and New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, Treasurer and Financial Express Editor Shamsul Huq Zahid, and General Secretary and Bonik Barta Editor Dewan Hanif Mahmud were present.

Other attendees included Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Manab Zamin Chief Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Daily Inqilab Editor AMM Bahauddin, Karatoa Editor Md Mozammel Haque, and Suprobhat Bangladesh Editor Rusho Mahmud.

The prime minister’s Press Secretary Abu Abdullah M Saleh and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman were also present.

40 Afghans Apply for Asylum in Russia in First Quarter of 2026

By Fidel Rahmati

May 17, 2026

Russia received 40 asylum applications from Afghan citizens during the first three months of 2026, marking a decline from the same period last year, according to Russian state media reports.

TASS reported on Sunday, May 17 that total asylum applications submitted in Russia during the first quarter reached 1,329 cases, based on data compiled from Russian interior ministry agencies.

The figures showed that citizens of Ukraine filed the highest number of requests with 712 applications, followed by Syria with 232 and Iran with 52 applications.

Afghanistan ranked fourth with 40 applications, ahead of Uzbekistan, whose citizens submitted 25 asylum requests during the same period.

Russia has historically approved only a limited number of asylum claims from Afghan nationals, with many applicants facing rejection despite ongoing humanitarian and security concerns linked to Afghanistan’s political and economic crisis.

Afghans continue to seek asylum in multiple countries following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, while international agencies have repeatedly warned about worsening economic hardship, unemployment and restrictions on rights inside Afghanistan.

According to the report, Afghan asylum requests in Russia dropped from 64 during the first quarter of 2025 to 40 this year, continuing a downward trend in applications.

Russian asylum status can provide legal residency, access to state healthcare, education and employment rights without additional work permits, while also serving as a pathway toward permanent residency and citizenship.

The report noted that Syrian nationals led asylum applications in Russia during the same period last year, while Afghan applicants previously ranked among the top groups seeking protection in the country.
