‘Robots Can Help Issue A Fatwa’: Iran’s Turbaned
Religious Leaders Look To Harness Artificial Intelligence

But the wave of global interest in the potential of
artificial intelligence has swept up even its turbaned religious leaders, who
are keen to explore how AI can help with anything from parsing lengthy Islamic
texts in search of guidance to issuing religious edicts.
“Robots can’t replace senior clerics, but they can be
a trusted assistant that can help them issue a fatwa in five hours instead of
50 days,” said Mohammad Ghotbi, who heads a state-linked organisation in Qom
that encourages the growth of technology businesses.
Iran’s recent history has been characterised by
clashes between tradition and modernity. The country’s 200,000 Shia clergy —
half of whom are based in Qom — have been the leading force in protecting
traditional and religious values.
But with Iran’s leadership facing heightened calls to
modernise in the wake of last year’s mass protest movement, the country’s
clerical establishment views technology as a way to be seen to be welcoming
development while strengthening the Islamic character of the country.
Ghotbi, who leads the Eshragh Creativity and
Innovation House, affirmed the approach, arguing that the clergy should not
oppose the desire of Iranians to share in global technological advances.
“Today’s society favours acceleration and progress,” he said.
Iran’s religious establishment has been looking at
ways to harness the technology since Qom’s first AI conference was held in 2020.
The head of Qom Seminary, the largest such institution in the Shia world,
recently opened up to how AI could accelerate the Islamic studies of senior
clergy and speed up their communication to the public.
“The seminary must get involved in using modern,
progressive technology and artificial intelligence,” Ayatollah AlirezaArafi
said in July. “We have to enter into this field to promote Islamic
civilisation.”
The city’s leading AI research centre, the Noor
Computer Centre for Islamic Sciences Research, is affiliated with the seminary
and has access to its centuries-old scrolls and other ancient data sources that
could be fed into algorithms.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, has
also urged clergy to pay more attention to the possibilities of AI, saying in
June that he wanted the country to be “at least among the top-10 countries in
the world in terms of artificial intelligence”.
Iran lags behind regional rivals such as Saudi Arabia
and the United Arab Emirates, which have ambitious plans to use AI to
turbocharge their economies. But, by indicating his support, Khamenei has given
clerics a mandate to pursue the cutting-edge technology in an effort to catch
up.
Most clerics still follow a more traditional approach
to religious study, preferring to sweat over lengthy documents to extract
Islamic rulings and adapt them to contemporary life. The dozen or so
top-ranking clergy in Iran, most of whom are between 80 and 100 years old, are
not expected to change course, but younger clerics were likely to be more open
to technological advances.
The foray into AI comes as Iran’s clerical
establishment faces unprecedented pressure to ease strict social and religious
restrictions, especially on women.
The tensions reached boiling point last September
following the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after her
arrest for allegedly not properly observing the obligatory Islamic dress code.
Mass protests broke out across the country and evolved into a broader call to
replace the Islamic republic with a secular, modern state. More than 300 died
in the unrest, according to rights group Amnesty International, while several
clerics were assaulted and had their turbans ripped off.
Ghotbi said it was incorrect to assume the Iranian
society was inevitably becoming less religious. Rapid technological
developments, and the refusal of many women to wear headscarves since the
protests, had unsettled many, particularly the more religious Iranians, and
prompted them to seek “rescue” through Islamic teachings, he said.
Technology could also help the clergy address public
concerns and reconcile them more swiftly with Islam, while helping clerics make
rulings in an increasingly complex society, he argued.
“The clergy must not merely tell followers what
constitutes a good deed or how to be truthful. Fields such as sociology,
psychology, health and entertainment also fall under religious ruling,” he
observed. AI would allow the clergy to take a broader approach and so “have
more social impact”, Ghotbi added.
Ghotbi also insisted that AI would not necessarily
result in Iran becoming more aligned with the secular views of the west. “We’re
working on localising the use of technology because our cultural values
differ,” he said.
Ultimately, however, even Qom’s turbaned clergymen
were not immune to the breakneck speed of technological advancement that was
making everything move faster: “I’m part of this society and have to run at the same pace.”

Muslim Bodies Including Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind seek

ZIYA US SALAM
The leading Muslim bodies of the country have called
for the disqualification of the BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri who indulged in a
slur-laden diatribe against Kunwar Danish Ali, the Bahujan Samaj Party MP on
the concluding day of the special session of Parliament.
Condemning the speech in which Mr. Bidhuri is reported
to have called Mr. Ali a “terrorist” and an “extremist” while participating in
a debate on the success of India’s Chandrayaan-3 Mission, the Muslim bodies
called it “an evidence of hatred for entire Muslim community”.
Speaking to the media, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president
Arshad Madani said, “The use of such language against a Muslim Member of
Parliament shows that, let the common Muslims aside, now the elected
representative of the Muslims is not safe even in the Parliament. If this is
the picture of new India, it is dangerous and disappointing.”
Mr. Madani felt it was the “constitutional and moral
responsibility of the Speaker to take action against the said member”. “There
have been heated and bitter debates n Parliament in the past too but no member
has ever used such undignified words for a fellow elected representative. It is
a manifestation of extreme hatred for Muslims,” he said.
On the same lines, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind called for
Mr. Bidhuri’s disqualification, saying, “It is a grave violation of the dignity
of a Parliamentarian amounting to a hate crime as such offensive words are
deployed by criminals and anti-social elements to denigrate members of a
particular religious community.”
“It is also a natural outcome of the sustained narrow
jingoistic ultra-nationalism practiced by those in power. It thrives on the
othering of citizens like Kukis, Muslims, Dalits and Adivasis. It exposes the
blatant Islamophobia breeding within many members of the ruling dispensation,”
the organisation added, while pointing out that MPs are role models for
citizens and that if this act goes unpunished, “it will give a message that
such actions are now being normalised. It will embolden others with similar
depravity and hurt our long cherished ideals and values of mutual respect and
tolerance.”
The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has also demanded that
Bidhuri be disqualified as MP and the BJP should also dismiss him from the party.
“Anything less will show Indian democracy in poor light,” the organisation
stated.
Meanwhile, the Welfare Party president S.Q.R. Ilyas
asked the BJP president J.P. Nadda to take punitive action against Mr. Bidhuri
for his hate speech. “This may be in accordance with BJP’s ethics, but it is
certainly against the Constitution and Parliamentary ethics,” he said. Mr.
Ilyas expressed his dissatisfaction towards Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh who
was on the Speaker’s chair during the unfortunate moment.

Clayton Heights Methodist Church Of Bradford, Shut In
2020, To Be Converted Into Mosque

24-09-2023
A BRADFORD church that dates back to 1870 is being
converted into a mosque, councillors have confirmed.
Clayton Heights Methodist Church shut in 2020 and has
been vacant since then.
Plans had been approved to turn the Chapel Lane
building into three two-bed homes.
However, work was never carried out and now the church
is to be renovated into a mosque due for completion early next year.
Queensbury Ward councillors say the conversion did not
need planning permission because the use, a place of worship, had not changed.
Cllr Alex Mitchell (Labour) said: "Cllr Hazel
Johnson and I welcome the mosque as an asset in Queensbury ward, serving our
diverse community and are pleased to hear of their plans for an open day to
allow residents to meet the team and have a look round." Residents had
raised concerns about the issues the mosque may cause around traffic and
parking.
Councillors have been reassured during the busier
times stewards will be on the site marshalling cars.
Cllr Mitchell added: "We have been contacted by neighbouring
residents who have legitimate concerns about the potential traffic build-up on
Highgate Road, which we share.
"We therefore spoke with the new owners of the
building, who have committed to have stewards managing visiting cars,
particularly on Fridays.
"Traffic build up and road safety is a primary
concern for our residents and we are continually working to ensure our roads in
Queensbury are safe."
The church had been an important part of the Clayton
Heights community for almost 150 years.
In 2010, it underwent a £125,000 refurbishment, partly
funded by Bradford Council.
The grants included £20,000 from Bradford Council’s
ward investment fund, £5,000 from the authority’s Community Regeneration Fund
and £50,000 from Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (Wren).
At the time, Church treasurer Robert Holroyd, who
oversaw the building programme, said the church had retained its original
character.
It was closed by the Bradford South Methodist Circuit
in 2020.
As of October 2022, many of the features, including
the church organ and Sunday School benches, remained in the building.
It was said that the building “may well remain
derelict” if a new use was not found soon.

Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi Blames February Revolution For Derna
Floods

Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi/ Libya
Observer
-----
By Abdul Kaderassad
23/09/2023
Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi has blamed the February
revolution, which toppled and killed his father Muammar Gaddafi after 42 years
in reign, and the subsequent instability responsible for the collapse of the
Derna dams and the death of thousands of people in the city.
“The lack of a state in Libya and the chaos that has
prevailed in the country since 2011, as well as the fact the Libyan people are
paying the price of an absurd, childish conflict between governments scattered
here and there, sham governments, are behind the disaster." Saif Gaddafi
said.
Gaddafi also accused Haftar's forces and the security
apparatuses in Derna of worsening the disaster after they asked residents not
to leave their homes and imposed a curfew in the city.
He warned against stealing the budget that would be
allocated to the reconstruction of Derna and said the parties that failed to
spend the $2 billion that they promised two years ago to reconstruct Derna as a
result of its destruction would not be able to spend the $10 billion that they
promised the city now.

Netanyahu says Israel nears normalization deal with
Saudi Arabia but refuses to outline concessions to Palestinians
By Sana Noor Haq
September 23, 2023
CNN — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said
it is “likely” Israel will reach a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia,
in what would mark a seismic foreign policy shift for both countries as they
edge closer to reaching a deal mediated by the US.
It would “change the Middle East forever,” he said –
bringing down “walls of enmity” and creating “a corridor of energy pipelines,
rail lines, fiber optic cables, between Asia through Saudi Arabia, Jordan,
Israel, and the United Arab Emirates.”
The White House has been in talks with Riyadh for
several months over the purported agreement to normalize relations between the
two countries. Saudi Arabia, like many Arab states, does not currently
recognize Israel; such a deal would have potential to enhance Israel’s
acceptance in the Muslim world, particularly considering Saudi Arabia’s role as
the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites.
In 2002, Saudi Arabia proposed an “Arab Peace
initiative” which offered Israel security and “normal relations” with 57 Arab
and Muslim countries in exchange for its withdrawal from occupied Palestinian
territories and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. But Israel
rejected the initiative at the time.

Immigrant, pop star ... and supreme court judge who
will decide fate of Israel’s justice system
Bethan McKernan
24 Sep 2023
When Esther Hayut, a bespectacled woman with hair
always neatly parted down the middle and pinned back with a barrette, was sworn
in as the chief justice of Israel’s supreme court in 2017, she pledged to
protect the country’s judiciary from politically motivated attempts to weaken
it.
“It is the properly applied rule of law that serves as
the glue which keeps our nation together … I pray that the justice system will
not crack,” she told an audience that included Israel’s prime minister,
Benjamin Netanyahu.
The child of Holocaust survivors, and something of a
pop star in her youth, Hayut and the attorney general, GaliBaharav-Miara , are
perhaps unlikely candidates for the faces of liberal Israel. But eight months
into the existential crisis triggered by the Israeli government’s judicial
overhaul, that is how they are viewed by supporters and detractors alike.
“I see Hayut as courageous. She knows this is not an
ordinary situation and is willing to speak out,” said a former Israeli justice
minister who asked to be quoted anonymously in order to speak freely. “She
shares the values that defined Israel until now.”

Yom Kippur War: Was it Israel's spectacular victory or
crushing defeat?
By HERB KEINON
SEPTEMBER 23, 2023
Israelis love to beat their chests in self-reproach,
and nowhere is this more evident than in how they have framed the 1973 Yom
Kippur War for the past 50 years.
On the last day of the war, October 24, 1973, Israel
found itself on the western side of the Suez Canal, with the entire Egyptian
Third Army surrounded and just 100 km. from Cairo. In the North, the IDF had crossed
the Golan Heights into Syria and was within 32 km. of Damascus, about the
distance from Jerusalem to Beit Shemesh.
In Israel, it is marked by somber music, war
memorials, and endless discussion about the failure of Israel’s intelligence,
its political leaders, and the military – in short, a colossal collapse.

In Iran, anti-regime resolve persists as security
forces intensify bid to crush movement
NahayatTizhoosh
Sep 23, 2023
One year after the historic Women, Life, Freedom
uprising rocked the foundations of the Islamic Republic in Iran, authorities
have smothered the movement — at least on the surface.
Dissidents inside and outside prison walls have been
silenced as authorities ramped up their tactics around last weekend's
anniversary of Mahsa Jina Amini's death in September 2022 after she was taken
into custody.
Yet, a discernible shift in Iranian public sentiment
has come to light: the once-dominant idea of reform has been overtaken, with a
broad consensus among Iranians now favoring regime change.

communal slurs at BSP MP during a parliamentary discussion.
After maintaining silence over the row after making
communal slurs at BSP MP Danish Ali inside the Parliament, BJP MP Ramesh

on the matter. His response came after a political storm broke out following
his comment during a parliamentary discussion.
The BSP MP earlier said he couldn't sleep the night
after being abused and that he would leave the Parliament if no action was
taken against Bidhuri, and criticised the BJP-ruled central government alleging
that it was trying to perpetuate a narrative against him.

"Tried To Save PM Post's Dignity": MP On
BJP's Provocation Charge
by Rajeev Ranjan
September 24, 2023
New Delhi: Hours after being accused of provoking the
BJP MP who hurled communal slurs at him in the Lok Sabha, Bahujan Samaj Party
member Danish Ali hit back at the ruling party and said that it was trying to
frame a narrative against him.
Mr Ali said that, far from provoking or instigating
BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri by making an objectionable remark against Prime Minister
Narendra Modi - as was alleged by the party's Nishikant Dubey earlier in the
day - he was trying to get the abusive words expunged from the record.
During a discussion on the success of the
Chandrayaan-3 mission in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Mr Bidhuri had used a
string of objectionable and communal words against the BSP MP, triggering
disgust and widespread condemnation both from politicians and people on social
media. On Friday, the BJP had also issued a show-cause notice to Mr Bidhuri and
asked him to explain his conduct.

James Webb detects carbon, a crucial ingredient of
life, on Jupiter’s icy moon Europa
by Fermin Koop
September 23, 2023
Europa, the smallest of the four moons orbiting
Jupiter, is one of the few worlds in the Solar System that could potentially
have conditions suitable for life. Studies have shown that beneath its crust
lies an ocean of liquid water. However, scientists haven’t been able to confirm
if the ocean also has the chemicals needed for life — until now.
Using data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope,
astronomers have identified carbon dioxide in a specific region on the icy
surface of Europa. The data suggests this carbon could have originated in the
subsurface ocean and wasn’t delivered by meteorites. Moreover, it was likely
deposited on a geologically recent timescale.
“On Earth, life likes chemical diversity — the more
diversity, the better. We’re carbon-based life. Understanding the chemistry of
Europa’s ocean will help us determine whether it’s hostile to life as we know
it, or if it might be a good place for life,” Geronimo Villanueva of NASA’s
Goddard Space Flight Center said in a news release.
Villanueva and the team of researchers at NASA found
carbon dioxide is most abundant in a region of Europa called Tara Regio, a
geologically young area of resurfaced terrain known as chaos terrain. The
surface ice was disrupted, and there was likely an exchange of material between
the subsurface ocean and the icy surface.

Ukraine targets Crimea with missile after attack on

By Jacob Geanous
Sep. 23, 2023
Ukraine targeted a key city in the Russian-occupied
Crimean Peninsula with a missile strike Saturday, one day after launching an attack
on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
Sevastopol, the largest city in Crimea and a major
Black Sea port was put under an air raid alert for approximately an hour
Saturday morning while debris from intercepted Ukrainian missiles fell near a
pier, the Russia-appointed Gov. Mikhail Razvozhayev wrote on a Telegram Post.
The attack also put a pause on ferry traffic in the

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh FM Momen On India-Canada Row; 'Proud Of
India, They Don't Do Immature Things'
23rd September, 2023
By Zaini Majeed
Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen
has weighed in on the India-Canada diplomatic row, saying that Dhaka is
"very proud of India because they don't do immature things." Momen
labelled the allegations made by the Canadian government against India about
the killing of the Sikh terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Ottawa as a "sad
episode," hoping that the tussle would be resolved amicably.
"I think it is very sad, I don't know the details
of it so I can't make any comment but we are very proud of India because they
don't do immature things. We have a very solid relationship with India and
these are based on values and principles," Bangladesh's Foreign Minister
Dr A. K. Abdul Momen said.
Nijjar, the orchestrator and the leader of the
separatist 'Khalistani' movement that threatens the security of India was shot
dead by masked men in the city of Surrey, in Canada’s British Columbia
province. Experts accused him of being funded, trained, and armed by the
Pakistan Army's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for operationalising his
outfit for anti-India activities on Canadian soil. In an explosive claim,
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged 'Indian agents' 'potential'
involvement in the murder of the Khalistani terrorist on June 18. It is pertinent
to note that Nijjar was designated as a terrorist here in India in 2020.
Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing
of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our
sovereignty,” Trudeau said in the Canadian parliament, later expelling a top
Indian diplomat whom he accused of being involved in intelligence without solid
evidence.

Tensions are soaring in Northern Mali as armed groups
and the Malian army engage in renewed conflict.
The situation has worsened since the exit of French

The recent clashes began in early August 2023 despite
earlier signs of peace. Both sides offer conflicting narratives about the
violence and its consequences.
For example, the army reports 10 lost soldiers and 46

ISLAMABAD: Amid the reopening of hundreds of accountability
cases in the wake of a recent Supreme Court order, the National Accountability
Bureau (NAB) finds itself short of staff to handle the expected mountain of
paperwork as a major chunk of its officers are currently on deputation to other

The bureau was already short of top officials

Charlie Kirk: Sen. Menendez's Indictment Creates
Appearance Of Impartiality So DOJ Can Continue "Jihad" Against Trump
By Ian Schwartz
September 23, 2023
Charlie Kirk on Friday's broadcast of his Salem Media
radio program reacted to the indictment of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and said
the DOJ is "doing this to create the appearance of impartiality so that
they can continue their jihad against Donald Trump."
CHARLIE KIRK: But let's talk about what's really going
on here before we take victory lap after victory lap after victory lap. It's
important to understand. The way that the fourth branch of government operates
is with intentionality. There are no mistakes. There are no indictments without
the right hand knowing what the left hand is doing.
So the first most obvious takeaway is important.
They're doing this to create the appearance of impartiality so that they can
continue their jihad against Donald Trump.

California governor vetoes bill requiring human
drivers in autonomous trucks
By Chance Townsend
September 23, 2023
A California bill requiring autonomous heavy-duty robo-trucks
to have human drivers was vetoed late Friday by state Governor Gavin Newsom.
The bill, Assembly Bill 316, was a worker-backed bipartisan effort in the state
to curb the number of fully autonomous trucks on the road, and to save jobs.
As reported by Reuters, Newsom's veto of the bill will
come as a relief to companies like Aurora and Daimler Truck that are testing
and developing driverless trucks to haul goods. The veto can overturned by the
state legislature with a two-thirds vote but the last time this happened in
California was in 1979, so the chances that it does are slim.
California is not the only state that allows for the
testing and use of driverless trucks, but, as Reuters notes, it is among the
few states that ban autonomous trucks over 10,000 pounds.

NASA's First Asteroid Sample on Track for Sunday
Parachute Landing in Utah
24-09-2023
LOS ANGELES—A NASA space capsule carrying a sample of
rocky material plucked from the surface of an asteroid three years ago hurtled
toward Earth this weekend headed for a fiery plunge through the atmosphere and
a parachute landing in the Utah desert on Sunday.
Weather forecasts were favorable and the robotic
spacecraft OSIRIS-REx was on course to release the sample-return capsule for
final descent as planned, with no further adjustments to its flight path
needed, NASA officials said at a news briefing on Friday.
Mission managers are expecting a "spot-on"
touchdown on the U.S. military's vast Utah Test and Training range, west of
Salt Lake City, said Sandra Freund, program manager at Lockheed Martin, which
designed and built the spacecraft.
