Red Fort Blast: ‘Alarming If It’s An Act Of Terror’ -  AIMPLB and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Demand Thorough Probe

Key Muslim organisations such as the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on Tuesday expressed concern over the car blast near the Red Fort in Delhi that killed 9 people and demanded a “comprehensive investigation” into the incident.

In a statement, AIMPLB president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani said that if the blast was an act of terrorism it was deeply alarming and that it raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the country’s security apparatus.

Expressing “profound grief and sorrow” over the incident, he conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, and prayed for a swift recovery of the injured.

Urging the government to conduct a “comprehensive, unbiased, and multi-dimensional investigation” into the incident, Rahmani said if the incident was accidental, it is extremely unfortunate. “But if it was an act of terrorism, it is deeply alarming and raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the country’s security apparatus — since even the most sensitive areas of the national capital are not secure,” Rahmani said.

He further added that in this hour of trial and grief, the AIMPLB stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and prays for the early recovery of all those injured.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind also demanded a “transparent, high-level investigation and an immediate accountability” for security lapses, and adequate compensation for the victims and their families.

In a statement, JIH president Syed Sadatullah Husaini said, “Preliminary media reports suggest this may have been an act of terror. If confirmed by investigating agencies, we unequivocally condemn this heinous act and demand that the culprits be brought to justice at the earliest. Such an incident in the heart of the national capital represents a grave lapse in security. There must be immediate accountability from those in power who are responsible for public safety. The lives and security of citizens are paramount, and the government must fulfill its constitutional duty to protect them.”

Hussaini also criticised certain sections of the media and social media users, saying, “In hours of crisis, we need unity and solidarity among citizens more than ever. Those who use such despicable incidents for their ideological or political gains must be called out and punished as per the law.”

Hussaini sought stringent punishment for the culprits and accountability from those responsible for security lapses at the highest levels.

Hussaini added, “Terrorism can not be an expression of any religion, it is its betrayal. Every violent act, under any banner, deserves the same unequivocal condemnation. Let people of all beliefs unite now to counter radicalization, to reject hate, and to work together to uproot the causes and networks of terror. Only a united society can protect the country’s pluralism, peace, and future.”

‘Repentant Boko Haram Members Have Been Recruited Into Nigerian Army’ – Rev Dachomo Alleges

November 11, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

A Nigerian cleric, Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo, has declared his full support for United States intervention in what he described as the ongoing “Christian genocide” in Northern Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, Rev Dachomo accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration and government officials of complicity in the killings.

He alleged that members of the Boko Haram insurgent group who claimed to have repented were being absorbed into Nigeria’s security agencies.

He said, “The repentant Boko Haram members have been recruited into the Nigerian Army, Air Force and Police. That’s why Christians must have a say in politics.”

He challenged claims that Muslims are also being killed, stating, “When they came shouting Allahu Akbar, they have beheaded a head of a Christian and they lick the blood. Muslims are claiming that they are killed, that we also kill them. Asked them where did we kill them? Look at the recent killing, look at this child that was killed and you are saying that it is not a genocide.”

Dachomo expressed confidence in his sources, saying, “I have insiders who give me information. I’m over 100% in support of President Donald Trump’s intervention because Nigeria government; their hands are tied.”

He vowed to take the Nigerian government to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the alleged killings, stating, “The world needs to know that what we are saying is not false. I will go to any length to prove that this government is lying. We are also planning to take Nigeria before the International Criminal Court and sue the Miyetti Allah association for their role in these atrocities.”

Rev. Dachomo, who is the regional chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi local government area of Plateau State, said this in a message he posted on his social media platform.

He said, “Hundreds of lives have been lost in attacks on Plateau villages that were never documented, and many victims remain unaccounted for.

“On March 7th, 2010, Dogo Nahawa, a Christian-dominated community in Jos South local government area of Plateau State, was attacked by Muslim-Hausa Fulani, where over 500 people were killed in one night.

“Due to my outcry, my own village has been attacked several times and over 50 people have been slaughtered, including my family members and friends. My best friend’s wife and five children were burned alive.

“Since the Federal Government claimed there was no genocide, that statement has pushed me to intensify this work. CAN is also denying the genocide, so I’m determined to prove them wrong.

“Right now, I’m travelling around to document cases of Christian genocide because many of the affected villages were never recorded, even though there are graves. I have been moving from one grave site to another.

“In Jaruwa, worshippers were burnt alive during a church service. None survived because the terrorists surrounded the building, set it on fire with gas lamps, and trapped everyone inside.

“I intend to cover all areas where Christians have been attacked. I’m going to Wurekum, Doruwa, Mangu, and Bokkos, all the places where Christian genocide has been reported. I’ll compile all these incidents into a report and present it to the world to show that genocide is happening in Nigeria.”

UK Government Warned Palestine Action Ban Would Be Viewed As Anti-Muslim, Pro-Israel Bias

By Luke Butterly,

11 November 2025

The UK government was warned that banning Palestine Action could heighten Muslim-Jewish tensions, be seen as evidence of bias towards Israel, and inadvertently raise the group’s public profile - months before the decision was made to outlaw it.

The document cautioned that the move risked becoming “a flashpoint for significant controversy and criticism” of the government.

The Community Impact Assessment was produced in March by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the Home Office, and the National Police Chiefs Council. A declassified version of the report was seen by The Detail.

It was one of the pieces of evidence that the proscription review group considered before supporting the Home Secretary in deciding to ban Palestine Action. The group was banned in July.

Flashpoint

The report described Palestine Action as “a small, single-issue group with lower mainstream media exposure than more widely recognised direct action groups, including Just Stop Oil and others.”

It noted a “general lack of awareness” among the public, adding that “much of the British public are likely currently unaware of Palestine Action (PAG) and would remain so in the event of prescription or, if informed, would remain largely unconcerned.”

However it warned that if the ban on Palestine Action was linked to debates surrounding Israel’s war against Gaza, the proscription could become "a flashpoint for significant controversy and criticism of HMG.

“Debate will also likely concern whether using terrorsim powers to counter criminal but non-violent direct action groups is a proportionate response."

Cabinet Office polling cited in the document showed declining public sympathy for Israel and growing support for the Palestinian cause. Another survey found majority support for ending UK arms exports - an issue central to Palestine Action’s campaigns against Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.

Officials warned that “in the event that PAG is proscribed, their profile may be inadvertently be enhanced, finding support amongst similarly minded members of the public who oppose the British footprint in the Israeli arms industry.”

Since the ban, protests have taken place across the UK, with thousands risking arrest under terror laws. The Metropolitan Police say they have detained more than 2,000 people in London alone. A Labour Party members’ poll in August found that 71% disagreed with the ban.

A government spokesperson said that “Palestine Action has conducted an escalating campaign involving criminal damage to Britain’s national security infrastructure, intimidation, and alleged violence. That activity puts the safety and security of the public at risk.

“Decisions on proscription are not taken lightly. They are informed by a robust evidence-based process, with contributions from a wide range of experts from across government, the police and the Security Service.”

Community tensions

Officials anticipated that reactions within different communities would be sharply divided.

“Many British Jewish people are likely to view PAG negatively, seeing it as a part of a movement hostile to Israel that may legitimize or promote antisemetic views and activities,” the report said. “However, these teams expect opinions on proscription to be mixed...it remains unclear how widespread [support for proscription] is within wider Jewish communities.”

By contrast, it said, “British Muslim communities are highly likely to view PAG positively, perceiving it as supporting Palestinian rights, and its actions directed solely against the state of Israel.”

The report warned that banning the group could “exacerbate polarisation and tensions between Muslim and Jewish communities in the UK” and recommended avoiding key religious or cultural holidays when announcing the decision.

It also advised ministers to develop “clear and consistent messaging” and to engage directly with community and faith leaders to explain the government’s rationale.

Civil liberties concerns were also highlighted, with officials warning that some within government and the wider public might see the decision as “a creep of terrorism powers into the realm of free expression and protest.”

The report concluded that proscribing Palestine Action “would almost certainly be perceived as evidence of bias against the British Muslim community and in favour of British Jews and Israel more broadly.”

It added that such a move “would likely reinforce past allegations of anti-Palestine HMG bias”.

Officials referred to earlier claims reported by The Guardian, including that Home Office ministers had attempted to influence police and prosecutors after meetings with Israeli arms Elbit Systems, and that Israeli embassy officials had sought to persuade the attorney general’s office to intervene in court cases.

“In the context of such reports, proscription could provide fertile ground for actors attempting to substantiate a pattern of basis,” the document warned.

MPs raised concerns in September following media reports that the Ministry of Defence was considering awarding a £2 billion contract to Elbit Systems UK, a subsidiary of Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer. The company describes its drones as “the backbone of the Israel Defense Forces.”

Before its proscription, Palestine Action had led a direct-action campaign targeting Elbit’s UK facilities, which intensified after Israel’s assault on Gaza. One of the company’s sites was later closed following repeated protests.

A separate declassified intelligence assessment appeared to question the strength of the case for proscription, stating that “the majority of the group’s activity would not be classified as terrorism.”

Israel’s longest war is leaving a trail of traumatized soldiers, with suicides also on the rise

November 12, 2025

Assi Nave, founder of Back2Life, stands in the farm in Kibbutz Sdot Yam, Israel, on Oct. 16, 2025. Back2Life helps soldiers combat mental health problems by working with animals. (AP)

------------

SDOT YAM, Israel: Wrapped tightly around his forearms, the former Israeli soldier feels the snakes’ cold skin against his, and for a moment he’s able to breathe.

It’s been nearly 18 months since he left the army after fighting in the war in Gaza, and the flashbacks and panic attacks haven’t ceased. He was wounded in a Hamas missile attack on his military base, and said two of his friends – also soldiers in their 20s – died by suicide. This farm in central Israel dedicated to helping soldiers has been a lifeline, he said.

“It doesn’t matter if a plane goes by or if the drone goes by or if someone is yelling. ... Because I’m here with the snake right now,” said the 27-year-old sergeant major, who called the experience grounding. Like other soldiers who spoke to The Associated Press, he insisted on anonymity to discuss private mental health matters.

Israel’s longest war is leaving a trail of traumatized soldiers, with a growing number suffering from mental health illnesses after two years of war with Hamas. Reports of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental health problems are increasing among soldiers, as are suicides.

Israel’s defense ministry says it has documented nearly 11,000 soldiers suffering from “mental health injuries” since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack that triggered the war in Gaza. That accounts for more than a third of the total 31,000 troops with such injuries in all of Israel’s conflicts since its founding nearly 80 years ago. The ministry defines mental health injuries as PTSD, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.

Suicides have also spiked. In the decade preceding the war, the number of soldiers taking their own lives in the army averaged 13 per year. Since the war, the number has risen, with 21 soldiers dying by suicide last year, according to the army. The figures – which account for active duty and reserve troops – don’t include soldiers who took their own lives after leaving the military.

A report published by Israel’s parliament last month said an additional 279 soldiers tried to take their own lives from January 2024 through July 2025 but survived.

“There’s now a genuine understanding that psychological injuries have profound consequences and that treatment is both necessary and practical,” said Limor Luria, deputy director general and head of the defense ministry’s Rehabilitation Department.

“We’re seeing a generational difference,” she said. “While many wounded veterans from previous wars never sought help, today’s wounded are responding very differently.”

The army is scrambling to address the crisis, mobilizing hundreds of mental health officers. It has sent experts to the front lines to help soldiers during combat, established a hotline and provided group therapy sessions to fighters once they’ve left service. Yet experts warn Israel is not yet equipped to deal with the scale – a gap the rehabilitation department acknowledged, saying it impacts the entire national health system.

The length and intensity of this war on multiple fronts – with tens of thousands of active duty and reserve troops called up for repeated deployments – haven’t allowed soldiers to properly heal, which could have long-term consequences for the country, said Tuly Flint, a trauma therapy specialist who has counseled hundreds of Israeli soldiers.

“Those victims of war, if not treated, lose the potential for personal and social development possible for them and may become a burden on themselves, their families and society,” he said.

Half a dozen soldiers who spoke to the AP, as well as psychologists who have treated fighters, said they lacked purpose, had difficulty concentrating or having relationships, and as the war dragged on, a sense of hopelessness set in.

Flint said some also suffered from what he called “moral injury.”

“Soldiers come back asking themselves who are they after what they’ve seen and done, what kind of people are they?” he said.

Rescue animals help soldiers heal

The 27-year-old former soldier, who worked as a radio technician for about six months at the start of the war, said he came to the farm earlier this year because he felt lost.

A missile struck his base on the border with Gaza, badly injuring his back. After that, he was anxious, triggered by noise, constantly on edge.

“Everything got louder, like my aggressions, my yelling, my feelings, everything just went up,” he said – as though “someone broke the volume.”

He’s receiving therapy from the army, but the farm has allowed him to heal in a different way, surrounded by others with similar experiences and allowing him to calm his mind by focusing on the animals, he said.

Nestled in the Sdot Yam kibbutz, the Back2Life farm is among several grassroots organizations stepping in to support the growing number of soldiers needing help. It was co-founded by Assi Nave and dedicated to his friend from an elite military unit, Amir (Dani) Yardenai, who suffered severe PTSD for years after fighting in Gaza in 2014, and died by suicide last year.

“Dani’s loss left me with the sense that he’s not the last one,” Nave said.

The farm has become an oasis for dozens of veterans who have participated in its sessions – which in addition to traditional counseling includes therapy with dogs and other animals – to the backdrop of chirping birds and clucking chickens. Former soldiers work with rescue animals, each helping the other to heal.

Psychologist Guy Fluman, who works with former soldiers and is among the mental health experts advising the farm on therapeutic approaches, said a major challenge veterans face is readjusting to civilian life and being with animals is grounding.

“You need to help them resolve their memories, be able to live in peace with what has happened ... and on the other hand to reconnect them to life,” he said.

Stigma persists

One 31-year-old deployed in Gaza and the West Bank for a year said upon returning home everything was a struggle: His relationship ended and he had difficulty connecting with family and friends.

“I felt like I was back there,” he said “My body is here, but my mind is not.”

He was among several veterans who told the AP he suffered from mental illness for years, triggered by fighting in Israel’s previous wars, yet this was the first time he felt comfortable seeking support.

“Stigma around mental health persists” among soldiers, acknowledged Luria, the rehabilitation program director. “Combating this stigma is a top priority.”

“We’re addressing it on multiple fronts,” including public campaigns and media outreach, she said, as well as programs designed to engage younger veterans, like rehabilitation farms and adventure sports.

A 32-year-old reservist who was assigned to collect bodies in southern Israel after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in which some 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage said his flashbacks were less connected to the sight of the decaying men and women but to the smell.

“I started to smell dead bodies ... all the time,” he said. He’d get triggered changing his child’s diaper.

A therapist himself, he recognized the signs and sought help for PTSD. He then started working with others to help with the army’s growing need.

He said the best way for soldiers to come forward is for their commanders on the ground to let them know that it’s OK.

“When the commander of the soldier says you can get help,” he said, “it works better and you have less stigma.”

Ilhan Omar hits back after Donald Trump mocks her quoting US Constitution: ‘Unlike you, I can read’

Nov 12, 2025

Influential Democrat Ilhan Omar responded to Donald Trump publicly after the US President mocked her for quoting the US Constitution and speaking out on national politics. The clash erupted after Trump targeted the Minnesota leader during an interview on Fox News.

Trump used Omar as an example while slamming the Democratic Party, questioning her right to comment on governance because of her foreign background. “I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything, they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything,” Trump said on The Ingraham Angle.

“All they have is crime and she comes in and tells us how to run our country.” He continued by mimicking her references to the Constitution, saying, “‘The Constitution says this, the Constitution says…’ The whole thing is crazy.”

Omar did not let Trump's comment slide. Posting on X, she replied, “Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the constitution says,” attaching a clip of Trump’s comments.

Omar fled Somalia’s civil war as a child and became a US citizen at 17. She has long been one of the most important progressive voices in Congress.

The exchange follows a series of remarks by the MAGA chief suggesting Omar should “go back” to Somalia, according to The Hill.

In September, Trump told reporters he had joked about sending her back and claimed the Somali president had no interest in taking her. Omar has dismissed such threats, saying in a recent interview, “I have no worry. I don’t know how they’d take away my citizenship and, like, deport me.”

She added that she is no longer the frightened child who fled conflict. “I’m grown. My kids are grown. Like, I can go live wherever I want.”

The White House later responded to the viral clip of Trump’s comments by circulating an image of him waving from a McDonald’s drive thru window.

‘Those who oppose Vande Mataram are opposing Bharat Mata’: UP CM Yogi

by Bhupendra Pandey

November 12, 2025

A day after he claimed that opposition to the national song was part of a “conspiracy to give birth to a new Jinnah”, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Tuesday said some people live in India, eat in India, and thrive in India, but refuse to sing Vande Mataram. He also said those who oppose Vande Mataram are opposing Bharat Mata herself.

He made the comments while addressing the launch of the ‘Rashtriya Ekta Yatra’ in Barabanki’s Kursi area while celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel alongside commemorating the 150th year of the national song.

On Monday, the CM had also announced that singing Vande Mataram will be made compulsory in all schools and colleges of the state.

While dedicating development projects worth Rs 1,734 crore to the people of Barabanki, the CM in his speech on Tuesday addressed the ‘opposition’ to the national song.

“We must understand their intentions clearly. Singing Vande Mataram is not a compulsion; it is an expression of gratitude, of love, of reverence toward our Bharat Mata.”

Adityanath further said that Vande Mataram is not about any individual, community, region, deity, or mode of worship. “It is a song to the motherland, a heartfelt expression of devotion to the soil that nurtures us all. Our strength as a nation comes from the worship of the three divine forms — Mahadurga, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati, symbolising power, prosperity, and wisdom. And in Vande Mataram, when we sing ‘Shasya Shyamalam Mataram’, we invoke that same spirit of a bountiful, sacred, and ever-living Bharat Mata,” he said.

Therefore, he added, every citizen “must unite in this chant of Vande Mataram to strengthen the nation and the spirit of Indianness. There must be no place in India for opposition to Vande Mataram”.

He also said, “The Britishers policy was to divide and weaken us, to sow discord, to pit brother against brother, and to break the unity that had held our civilisation together for millennia. This divisive strategy was not new; it was used by foreign rulers during the Mughal era and perfected by the British. A once united and eternal India was fragmented, piece by piece, until the most tragic division occurred on August 14, 1947, when India was partitioned. The British left us with a wound that sought to convince us that India could never remain one.”

Referring to a nearby township in Kursi — Mohammadabad — he alleged, “Right beside you lies Mohammadabad… Tell those who have been misled in the name of secularism that it was the Nawab of Mohammadabad who, as the treasurer of the Muslim League, financed the creation of Pakistan. India’s own wealth was used to divide India, to weaken India, to strike at its unity. Mohammadabad — just 5 km away — witnessed that betrayal. He, too, fled to Pakistan.”

“His descendants who stayed behind are struggling within India,” he added. “The property once owned by those who betrayed the nation is now recognised as enemy property. And let it be remembered, enemy property does not belong to the enemy; it belongs to the people of India, to the Government of India, to every citizen of this great nation,” the chief minister added.

Cleric behind radicalisation of doctors linked to Faridabad terror module arrested

Nov 11, 2025

An imam from Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian, Irfan Ahmad Wagah, was arrested on Tuesday, a day after the Faridabad explosives bust and the blast near Delhi’s Red Fort triggered a multi-agency probe. Along with Ahmad, the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) and Srinagar Police also arrested his wife during a raid at their home for allegedly recruiting and radicalising doctors - including those arrested in the Faridabad module - as well as several youths in the Valley.

A former paramedical worker at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar, Ahmad - who also served as an imam in Nowgam - was allegedly involved in luring medical professionals toward radical ideologies, according to intelligence sources.

Investigators have linked Ahmad’s wife to the radicalisation of a doctor named Shaheen, who allegedly helped form a women’s wing under Jaish. Phones seized from their residence contained instructions urging recruits to pursue extremist objectives.

The imam came under the radar of intelligence agencies after posters bearing Jaish-e-Mohammad’s name appeared on walls in Bunpora, Nowgam, on October 19. The detainees subsequently identified Ahmad as the person who had given them the posters.

Investigations have also revealed the imam's ties with Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, a close aide of Dr. Mohammad Umar, who allegedly carried out the Red Fort blast. Dr Muzammil, who was operating from the rooms owned by the Maulvi. Muzammil was a doctor working at Al Falah University in Faridabad’s Dhauj. The Maulvi was also linked to Dr Umar, according to sources.

Police describe this as white-collar terrorism, linking doctors and academics to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. Confiscated messages tie Ahmad’s sermons to extremist goals. By enlisting professionals, the group allegedly masked militant planning under the guise of spiritual or scholarly pursuits.

Officials cited a report stating that the plan was actually a multi-state simultaneous operation to set India ablaze, apparently as revenge for the killing of Jaish chief Masood Azhar’s family in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. With Ahmad’s arrest, the plot has now been foiled.

17 FIRs Filed Against Mosques Caretakers, Clerics For Using Loudspeakers in UP’s Ballia

Scroll Staff

November 11, 2025

Seventeen first information reports have been registered against caretakers and clerics of different mosques in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district for allegedly violating Supreme Court and state government guidelines on the use of loudspeakers, PTI reported on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh said that the cases were filed at several police stations as part of a district-wide drive against the use of high-decibel loudspeakers at religious places, according to the news agency.

In July 2005, the Supreme Court banned the use of loudspeakers and music systems between 10 pm and 6 am, except in cases of public emergencies. In 2022, the Uttar Pradesh government issued guidelines restricting the use of loudspeakers at places of worship.

In Ballia, a case was registered at the Bansdih Road police station against Maulvi Mohammad Shahjahan of the Gothhuli Mosque under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Environment Protection Act, 1986, based on a complaint by Sub-Inspector Mahendra Rawat, PTI reported.

The complaint stated that two large loudspeakers were installed on the mosque and played at high volume despite repeated warnings, causing disturbance to residents.

Another case was registered at the Bheempura police station against Mohammad Salim Ansari, caretaker of the Shodhanpur Mosque, under the same sections, PTI reported. Police said three loudspeakers had been installed there and that, despite objections from locals, the azaan and prayers continued to be broadcast at high volume.

In a separate incident, two FIRs were registered in Ballia’s Kotwali police station against Haider Ali, caretaker of Jamua mosque, and Ghulam Arshad, caretaker of Umarganj mosque.

“Similar FIRs were also registered at Nagara, Pakri, and Reoti police stations against mosque caretakers and clerics for non-compliance with noise control norms,” PTI quoted an unidentified police official as saying.

Earlier this month, the police in Shamli district filed a first information report against an imam, or religious leader, for allegedly playing a loudspeaker at a mosque beyond the permissible decibel limit. The decibel limit at which the loudspeaker was playing was not specified.

Maharashtra ATS conducts searches in Thane, Pune in connection to techie with alleged Al Qaeda links

12 Nov 2025

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra ATS has searched the premises of a teacher in Thane and another person in Pune in connection with the recent arrest of a software engineer for his alleged links with Al Qaeda and other banned outfits, officials said on Wednesday.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) clarified that the searches were unrelated to the blast in Delhi on Monday that claimed 12 lives, but added that as part of the standard procedure, it was examining whether there was a possible Maharashtra link to the incident in the national capital.

The teacher's house at Mumbra in Thane district was used for one of the meetings by the arrested Pune-based software engineer, Zubair Hangargekar, the officials said.

The ATS nabbed Hangargekar (37) from Pune on October 27 for his alleged links with banned outfits, such as Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, and for his suspected involvement in radicalisation activities.

During the investigation, the ATS had found a Pakistani contact number saved on his old phone. While probing further, the ATS learned that Hangargekar had visited Mumbra in Thane for one of his meetings.

Accordingly, the ATS officials visited the teacher's house on Tuesday and enquired about Hangargekar and his meeting, an official said.

The teacher is neither an accused nor a witness in the case, he added.

"We searched the premises of two individuals, one in Kondhwa (in Pune) and another in Mumbra, and questioned them," another official said, adding that there was no connection between Hangargekar and the Delhi blast.

Earlier this month, the ATS told a Pune court that Hangargekar allegedly used to deliver religious discourses "aggressively" in the city's Kondhwa area.

During a house search there, the ATS seized mobile phones containing deleted PDF files titled 'Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and All Its Manifestations', it had said.

They also recovered an Urdu translation of a speech delivered by the late Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden on Eid-ul-Fitr.

In addition, a magazine titled Inspire was found, containing photographs of AK-47 training at the OSG Gun School and documents detailing the procedure to make an IED using acetone peroxide from an OSG bomb school, it told the court.

The ATS had also said that during the searches, an old phone belonging to Hangargekar was recovered from one person.

"During the analysis of the contact list of the phone, five international phone numbers were found saved, including one from Pakistan, two from Saudi Arabia, and one each from Kuwait and Oman," it said.

The call detail records of the phone, however, do not show any calls to these saved numbers, the ATS said.

J&K Police raid over 300 locations linked to Jamaat-e-Islami in major crackdown

12.11.25

Police on Wednesday intensified their ongoing crackdown on the terror ecosystem in Kashmir, conducting raids at more than 300 locations linked to individuals associated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), officials said.

According to police officials, the large-scale raids were launched following credible intelligence inputs suggesting attempts by JeI-linked elements to revive their activities under different fronts.

The searches were carried out across several districts, including Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Baramulla, and Ganderbal, targeting the residences and premises of JeI members and their associates. Officials said the operation is part of sustained efforts to “dismantle the terror ecosystem and its support structure at the grassroots level.”

Giving details of the massive operation, officials said that over 200 locations were raided in Kulgam district alone. Over the past four days, they added, more than 400 cordon and search operations (CASOs) have been conducted across various areas of the district at the premises of OGWs, Jammu and Kashmir Nationals Operating from Pakistan (JKNOP), places where encounters occurred in the past, and hideouts of active or killed terrorists.

“These operations have led to the interrogation of around 500 individuals affiliated with JKNOPs and other banned outfits, many of whom have been bound down and shifted to District Jail Mattan, Anantnag under preventive laws,” the officials said.

During the raids, police recovered incriminating materials and digital devices, while several JeI members were interrogated and bound down to further trace and disrupt networks aiding terrorism.

In north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police in Sopore carried out a major coordinated operation against the “counter-terror and separatist ecosystem,” conducting simultaneous raids at more than 30 locations across Sopore, Zaingeer, and Rafiabad with the assistance of other security agencies.

“During the operations, a significant quantity of incriminating material, including documents, digital gadgets, and printed content with links to the banned organisation, was recovered and seized for detailed scrutiny. Several individuals are being questioned to ascertain their involvement in unlawful activities,” the officials said.

Extensive searches were also conducted in Ganderbal district in central Kashmir, targeting individuals and premises associated with the proscribed organisation. “During the raids, a large quantity of incriminating materials, including documents, digital devices, and printed content having direct links with the banned outfit, were recovered and seized for detailed analysis. Several suspects have been detained for questioning to ascertain their role in unlawful and subversive activities,” the officials said.

According to police, these operations form a crucial part of the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s sustained preventive strategy “aimed at dismantling the terror-separatist ecosystem, cutting off its ideological, financial, and logistical networks, and ensuring that peace and normalcy remain undisturbed.”

Similar raids were also conducted at multiple locations in Shopian and Pulwama districts, where several JeI members were questioned and bound down under law, officials added.

Haze on 'terror' after Delhi blast: Panic reaction or Pulwama-like plot? Government mum

Imran Ahmed Siddiqui

12.11.25

Government and police sources have spoken in multiple voices on Monday’s blast near the Red Fort that killed at least 12 people, with some pointing to a Pulwama-style plot on Delhi while others appearing to contest the theory of a pre-planned terror attack by suggesting the explosion was the result of panic.

Sources in the security establishment this newspaper spoke to said a preliminary probe had revealed possible terror links involving a “white-collar” module of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) that had planned Pulwama-like attacks in Delhi. The possibility of the lone occupant of the car being a suicide bomber is also being investigated, they said.

All through, the government has not made any comment on the nature of the attack, although the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which exclusively probes terror cases, has taken over the inquiry on the orders of the home ministry and the stringent anti-terror law UAPA has been invoked in the FIR.

Late on Tuesday night, government sources said the car explosion was triggered by panic, claiming that investigators had “confirmed” it was not a suicide mission. “The suspect’s IED was incomplete and improperly assembled, which limited the impact. No crater formation and absence of projectiles indicate the device was not configured for maximum damage,” a source said, adding that the device “accidentally detonated” while it was being relocated or being taken for detonation.

A security official attached to the Union home ministry, however, told this newspaper: “Forensic evidence and intelligence inputs have pointed to possible terror links involving the JeM. The terror module was planning Pulwama-like attacks in Delhi and other parts of the country.”

The blast, he said, was allegedly orchestrated by UN-designated global terrorist and JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar. “Initial findings revealed that the JeM apparently involved a network of radicalised doctors to plan Pulwama-style suicide attacks using a vehicle-borne IED in the heart of the capital. These radicalised doctors’ job was to make bombs and assist others in carrying out the attack,” he said.

He, however, declined to comment on how such a large amount of explosives and bomb-making materials made their way from Haryana to Delhi despite the huge police presence at the border and whether the blast could be the result of an intelligence failure.

On February 14, 2019, 40 CRPF jawans were killed on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Kashmir’s Pulwama after a JeM suicide bomber rammed his explosives-filled car into a convoy bus of the paramilitary force.

Sources in the Delhi police said the “white-collar” module had been activated after Operation Sindoor.

Terror attack?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Bhutan, on Tuesday vowed to punish the “conspirators” behind the blast but stopped short of naming any suspects or labelling the explosion a terror attack.

After the Pahalgam attack on April 22, the government had announced that any future act of terror in India would be considered an “act of war” against the country and would be responded to accordingly.

A former CBI director told The Telegraph it was surprising that the government had not officially called the Delhi blast a terror attack even though the case had been registered under the anti-terror law.

“The preliminary probe clearly suggests it was a terror attack. This government, which loses no time in blaming Islamabad after any terror attack, is now maintaining a studied silence and has not yet officially labelled it a terror attack. It could be because people will demand retaliation, considering the government has reiterated that Operation Sindoor is still not over,” he said.

The Pahalgam attack had killed 26 civilians and brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war. New Delhi had blamed that attack on Islamabad, which denied the charge, leading to the worst military conflict between the two countries in decades before they agreed to a ceasefire after four days.

Sources said the Delhi police, Jammu and Kashmir police, NIA, National Security Guard, Intelligence Bureau, Uttar Pradesh ATS, Haryana police, the Gujarat police and forensic teams were jointly probing the white-collar terror module.

Union home minister Amit Shah said the perpetrators of the Delhi blast would face “the wrath of the agencies”.

“Chaired review meetings on the Delhi car blast with the senior officials. Instructed them to hunt down each and every culprit behind this incident. Everyone involved in this act will face the full wrath of our agencies,” Shah posted on X.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh said agencies were carrying out a swift and thorough investigation, and the findings would be made public soon.

Probe findings

The home ministry sources this newspaper spoke to suggested that the explosion could have been a fidayeen attack.

The lone occupant of the car, Dr Umar Mohammed Nabi, is presumed to have died in the blast. Preliminary forensic analysis suggests the ammonium nitrate fuel oil bomb was detonated manually near the Red Fort, the sources said.

The sources said Umar and three other doctors — Adeel Ahmad Rather, Muzammil Ahmad Ganai and Shaheen Sayeed — were part of the white-collar terror ecosystem, involving radicalised professionals and students in contact with foreign handlers operating from Pakistan and other countries. They coordinated through encrypted channels and charitable fronts to move funds, arms and explosives.

“Several such suspects are under the scanner and some of them were detained from Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir,” said an NIA official.

Early findings suggested that Umar had intended to carry out an explosion but decided on a fidayeen-style operation, apparently to maximise the number of casualties, as soon as he learned that the Faridabad module had been busted, the official said.

Adeel, Muzammil and Shaheen are under arrest and are being interrogated.

The sources said Muzammil was in regular touch with handlers in Kashmir and awaiting details about the target. The conspiracy, the sources said, was hatched in Pakistan.

The terror module had several doctors and they were linked to the JeM and the Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. “It seems some terrorists of the Jaish terror module infiltrated India post-Operation Sindoor and were funding the new white-collar module with the help of local militants in Kashmir,” a source said.

The blast came hours after security agencies recovered nearly 3,000kg of explosives from two rented houses of Muzammil in Faridabad.

Sources said Umar, who was driving the car, reportedly panicked and triggered the blast after investigators seized the explosives used in the attack. The initial investigation indicated that the car had changed hands multiple times.

“Umar used ammonium nitrate fuel oil to carry out the attack. Apparently, he placed a detonator in the car and carried out the attack in a crowded area near Red Fort,” an officer said.

Agencies are closely monitoring social media activities and have begun extensive technical analysis of communication records. Data from all mobile phones that were active in the vicinity of the Red Fort complex at the time of the explosion are being examined.

Officials said the data could help identify the mobile numbers connected to the blast, revealing communication between suspects and possible accomplices. The dump data from the Red Fort parking area and surrounding zones have been obtained, an officer said.

Bajrang Dal Activists Assault Muslim Gym Trainer In Indore; Police Jail Victim Despite No Complaint From The Girl

November 11, 2025

Bajrang Dal activists in Indore allegedly thrashed a Muslim gym trainer who was travelling in a car with a girl.

The police later booked the trainer and sent him to jail on Tuesday, despite the girl not filing any complaint against him.

The incident occurred late Monday night in the Bhanwarkuan area of Indore.

The gym trainer, identified as Shadab Mansuri, was reportedly driving with a girl said to be a Hindu.

Several Bajrang Dal activists intercepted their car, dragged Shadab out, and assaulted him even as the girl pleaded with them to stop.

The assailants then took Shadab to the Juni Indore police station.

Bajrang Dal District Coordinator Vijay Kalkhor alleged that Shadab, who is married, was involved in “Love Jihad” and had been taking undue advantage of young women who attended the gym.

However, the girl accompanying Shadab refused to lodge any FIR against him.

Despite this, the police booked Shadab under preventive sections and sent him to jail on Tuesday.

‘Even preparation to commit a terror act is an offence’: SC rejects bail plea of man arrested under UAPA

November 12, 2025

The Supreme Court Tuesday rejected the bail plea of a man facing charges, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, of spreading ISIS ideology and conspiring to attack the Jabalpur Ordnance Factory to procure weapons for furthering the terrorist outfit’s activities.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta noted that even preparation to commit a terror act is an offence under the stringent anti-terror legislation. The court said that accused Syed Mamoor Ali alias Mamoor Bhai can apply afresh for bail if the trial is not concluded within the next two years for no fault of his.

“We are not inclined to interfere. Considering the facts and circumstances of the case and the fact that the petitioner has been incarcerated for more than two years and further that 19 out of 64 proposed witnesses have already been examined although 94 are mentioned in the chargesheet, we direct the trial court to conclude the trial within two years. Prosecution and defence shall extend all cooperation in the trial. If the trial is not concluded within two years for no fault attributed to the petitioner, it will be open for him to revise his prayer for bail,” the bench said.

As soon as the court took up the matter, Senior Advocate Siddharth Dave, appearing for Ali, said that it was “not the best morning to argue this case after the events of yesterday”.

His apparent reference was to the bomb blast in the Red Fort area Monday evening that left 13 dead.

Justice Mehta, though, sought to disagree and said, it is the “best morning to send a message.”

Responding to Justice Nath’s remark that inflammatory material was recovered from the accused, Dave denied this and said that only Islamic literature was found.

Referring to allegations that he was part of a WhatsApp group created to spread ISIS ideology, Justice Mehta said, “You formed a WhatsApp group almost identical to ISIS. What is the intention behind that?”

Dave said that mere planning was not enough to make out an offence unless it is followed up with some concrete action.

Justice Mehta, however, pointed out that there is a prima facie case against the accused. “You are accused of creating a ring of terror in the country,” he said.

Justice Kant said Ali is also accused of “creating turbulence and affecting civility in the country.”

Dave, however, insisted that it was not enough and something more has to happen for the case to be made out.

The court pointed out that even preparation is an offence under UAPA.

As per NIA, which probed the case, Ali and his co-accused came under the influence of radical Islamic preachers like Zakir Naik during the Covid-19 lockdown and wanted to see Sharia law implemented all over the world, including India, through violent means. They allegedly prepared pamphlets similar to the flags of ISIS and al Qaeda and affixed them on a nearby mosque to attract “like-minded” people, whom they can influence towards the ideology of ISIS.

They started a WhatsApp group, which Ali named “Fisabilliah”, to share ideological content.

“The investigation further shows that the present appellant and other co-accused persons conspired to attack Ordnance Factory, Jabalpur, to procure the weapons in large quantity in furtherance of their terror activity. They also decided to blast the Jabalpur Ordnance Factory, if they could not succeed in capturing it. The present appellant also suggested to have three Mujahids behind each security personnel in order to capture the factory. They wanted to expand their violence to whole India,” the prosecution alleged as per the HC order, which rejected Ali’s bail plea on January 6 this year.

Pensioners Threaten Nationwide Naked Protest Over Unpaid Arrears

November 11, 2025

By Richard Ogunsile

The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria has threatened to hold a nationwide protest on November 24 if the Federal Government fails to pay the outstanding pension increment arrears and palliative allowances owed to pensioners.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, November 11, in Lagos, the Coalition’s National Chairman, Mukaila Ogunbote, revealed that the Federal Government had failed to fulfil its promise of paying the 32,000 pension increment arrears and the 25,000 palliative allowance, which had been approved since 2023.

Ogunbote, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NIPOST Chapter, said the protest would take place unless the payments were made by November 23.

“We were told that our arrears would be paid within two weeks of the approval, yet nothing has been done,” Ogunbote stated.

“If by November 23, we do not receive payment, all pensioners nationwide will embark on a naked protest on November 24,” he warned.

Ogunbote also disclosed that pensioners in the diaspora had expressed their support and would join the protest from their respective countries, making the protest not just a nationwide event, but a global one.

He appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and direct the Minister of Finance and the Accountant-General of the Federation to release the funds.

“Many pensioners have died and many more are dying due to hardship, as they are unable to feed well or access proper medical treatment when ill,” Ogunbote lamented.

The coalition’s chairman further criticised the government for paying workers their 35,000 palliative allowance, while pensioners, who he argued are more vulnerable, have been left out.

“Workers received the 35,000 palliative in a month, but up till now, pensioners have not been paid the 25,000 approved for us. We are more vulnerable than anyone else,” he said.

Ogunbote also expressed disappointment at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for not supporting the pensioners’ demand more actively. He called for unity among workers to address the perceived injustices perpetrated by the government, which he accused of prioritising other expenditures while neglecting pensioners.

Appeal for Government Action Before Christmas

The pensioners’ representatives, including Ogunbote, also appealed to the government to release the owed funds before December to allow pensioners to prepare for the upcoming Christmas celebrations with dignity.

The President of the Civil Service Pensioners, Francis Oluwo, lamented that the individuals surrounding President Tinubu were not following through on the instructions issued to them.

Oluwo also called on the Federal Government to act swiftly, noting that many retirees are living in poor health conditions and struggling to afford basic needs like food and medication.

Bridget Obieto, the Assistant Secretary of the Voice of Nigeria Pensioners Association, echoed these sentiments and urged the NLC to use its influence to help address the pensioners’ demands.

“We have served this country faithfully for over 35 years. Now that we are old, the government must not abandon us,” she said.

Obieto appealed to President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to ensure the prompt payment of arrears before December to enable pensioners to celebrate the festive season with dignity.

The Chairman Emeritus of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NIPOST Chapter, Elijah Akindutire, also called for the payment of the arrears.

Akindutire urged pensioners to turn out in large numbers for the protest on November 24 to show the government their resolve.

“We are determined to make our voices heard,” Akindutire said.

The pensioners remain hopeful that the Federal Government will act before the deadline, but their resolve to protest has made their intentions clear.

CBL comes in for more criticism from Grand Mufti – accuses it of usury

November 11, 2025

As the exchange rate for the Libyan dinar reaches 7.79 against the US dollar in the black-market, making a mockery of the vow by Naji Issa, the Governor Central Bank of Libya (CBL), to bring the exchange rate to below LD 7 per dollar and end the cash crisis ‘‘by October’’, Libya’s Grand Mufti, Sadig al-Ghariani said “The Central Bank must review its policies, as its actions have led to a resurgence of usury in the country.”

The Grand Mufti, speaking on his dedicated satellite TV channel added that “If you want to obtain the liquidity that has completely disappeared from the banks, you have two options: either buy dollars with a cheque at 9 dinars and sell them for slightly more than 7 dinars, thus taking 15% from your pocket—which is usury—or exchange 1,000 dinars in cheques for 900 dinars in cash or less, which is usury in its purest form.”

The Grand Mufti was lambasting the CBL Governor’s so-far failed attempt to end the cash crisis and to strengthen the dinar. The Governor’s recent recall of old ”red coloured / Red Mullet Trillia (triglia in Italian)” notes, forced many Libyans to sell them cash or through a cheque in the black-market at the discount rates the Mufti is referring to. Many preferred to lose a hefty percentage rather than deposit them in their banks where they have no hope of withdrawing them. Today, queues were still forming outside banks. Most banks, including one visited by Libya Herald yesterday, have no cash at all to distribute to customers.

Mufti objects to CBL’s Certificates of Deposit

It is not the first time Libya’s highest based cleric has intervened in political affairs or criticised the CBL recently. He has a rich track record during the 2011 revolution – including some interventions deemed inciteful.

For example, on 9 October, the Grand Mufti said the ‘‘Absolute Speculative’’ (referred to as Mudaraba in Islamic – Sharia) Certificates of Deposit proposed for sale by the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) are not 100 percent Islamic – Sharia compliant – a ruling that could wreck the CBL’s grand plans to solve the cash crisis, defend the value of the Libyan dinar and reduce inflation and cost of living.

Mufti scolds CBL for high dollar FX rate

In February this year, the Grand Mufti criticised the economic situation in Libya. He was critical of the lack of effective action taken by those in power in lessening the economic burden on the average Libyan citizen.

Al-Ghiriani said “Every official in Libya should be ashamed of the collapse of the Libyan dinar against foreign currencies and the dollar exchange rate reaching about 7 Libyan dinars’’.

It was expected that the new CBL Governor and his Board of Directors would be more proactive and effective in improving the exchange rate of the Libyan dinar against the main foreign currencies.

The Grand Mufti went to say ‘‘Libyans export one and a half million barrels per day of oil and their (annual state) budget is 170 billion dinars, and yet when the Libyan walks, he walks humiliated, despicable, humiliated, and exchanges the Libyan dinar for half a Tunisian dinar or less’’.

Directing a broadside at Libya’s politicians and administrators, He added ‘‘And after this humiliation, no Libyan official was ashamed (enough) and resigned.”

Mufti supports fuel subsidy reform

In July, basing his religious recommendation on Libya’s fuel subsidy reform on the IMF’s study published this month entitled “Energy Subsidy Reform in Libya”., the Grand Mufti said ‘‘the first step to reforming the waste of public money that Libya is currently experiencing is to lift the (energy) subsidies, almost half probably more, of which go to the money of criminals and smugglers’’.

Drawing on the IMF Al-Ghariani continued ‘‘The report issued by the IMF calling for the lifting of energy subsidies is a study by international experts, the government should take advantage of it and gradually lift subsidies, as the report suggested, as there is no country in the world where gasoline and energy are sold at the price that it is sold at (LD 0.15 / US$ 0.09 per litre) in Libya’’.

Mufti supports Presidency Council’s decrees

On the other hand, the Grand Mufti announced in a video recording his support for the Presidency Council’s controversial April 2025 decrees. Some critics deemed the Presidency Council had overstepped its authority.

He rejected those from inside and outside who bypassed them, pointing out that the UN mission does not want to hold elections in Libya.

Need for elections

In January this year, during a meeting with the outgoing British Ambassador, Martin Longden, Dar Al-Ifta reported that the Mufti stressed that there is no saviour for Libya except by going to elections by adopting the constitution to end the transitional periods, eliminate financial and administrative corruption, and end the division in the country.

Demanded action not words from international community

The Mufti reportedly asked the active countries of the Security Council to support this option so that Libyan society enjoys stability, and that other loose statements of calling for reconciliation and talking about stability without effective solutions are all slogans that will not bring us to safety.

APC slams Babachir for blaming terrorism on Muslim-Muslim ticket

12th November 2025

The All Progressives Congress has dismissed former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal’s claim that the Muslim-Muslim ticket of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima laid the foundation for alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking with The PUNCH on Tuesday, APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu, said Lawal’s position was driven by bitterness over his failed bid to emerge as Tinubu’s running mate in the 2023 election.

Lawal, while featuring on Monday’s edition of Politics Today on Channels Television, had alleged that the Muslim-Muslim ticket and the administration’s perceived tilt towards Islamic economic frameworks created conditions that emboldened attacks on Christians in the country.

According to Lawal, the composition of the current administration sent a message that Christians were of no consequence in the country’s political leadership, thereby encouraging those intent on targeting Christians.

He said, “The government, by deliberate actions, seems to encourage them. I tell you, I refer to this Muslim-Muslim ticket, that is the fundamental basis for they have justification to continue.

“If the government so decides that we have no regard for Christians in Nigeria, that we can run our government as Muslims, whether they like it or not, they can go to hell.”

Lawal also expressed concern that the present administration had yet to acknowledge what he described as the “Christian genocide verdict” reportedly given by former United States President Donald Trump, despite evidence of targeted killings.

However, Arodiogbu described Lawal’s attempt to blame insecurity on the religious composition of the presidency as unfair and divisive.

He said, “For Babachir Lawal to start blaming the Muslim-Muslim ticket or Tinubu’s choice of vice president for the killings in Nigeria is quite unfortunate. But it is expected of a man of his kind.

“He has developed a mindset of ‘If I can’t get it, let the house scatter.’ It is the same trajectory of a grumbling loser.”

The APC chieftain noted that while many Christians initially expressed concern over the same-faith ticket, fears of marginalisation or an ‘Islamisation agenda’ had not materialised.

“As a Christian, I would have also preferred a Christian deputising the president. But we have seen that Tinubu is a true democrat, and the fear that Christians expressed about Islamisation did not happen.

“Also, the fear about Christians not being adequately appointed in positions was also unfounded,” he stated.

He added, “The president is a man whose wife is a pastor of a church despite being a Muslim. That shows his level of reasoning, balancing, and consideration. So Babachir’s presentation is quite unfortunate but expected.”

Arodiogbu said Lawal’s assertions were motivated by personal frustration over being sidelined by the Tinubu administration.

“It is all frustration over his failed ambition. Babachir Lawal became disgruntled after Tinubu dropped him. You know he was one of the major supporters when the President emerged as the APC candidate after the primaries.

“But he became disgruntled after his vice presidential ambition didn’t sail through. If you know his history, you will understand that there is no way he wouldn’t be making this comment he is making today. His views are always about himself. Are there killings in Nigeria? Yes. Christians are being killed just like Muslims.”

Lawal had also alleged that the administration muted the idea of introducing a Halal economy as evidence of a possible Islamisation agenda.

The Halal economy encompasses products and services that comply with Islamic law (Sharia) and principles, extending beyond food to sectors such as finance, fashion, cosmetics, and tourism.

He said, “Recently, there was an argument that they also want to bring a Halal economy (Islamic economy). When people came to me, I said, What do we expect to happen when they have a Muslim-Muslim government? They decided to do it.

“How do you expect them not to continue until they get to the end? What was the sense of a Muslim-Muslim ticket?”

‘Surprise Attack’ – US Lawmaker Speaks On Military Invasion After Trump’s Threat On Nigeria

November 12, 2025

By Richard Ogunsile

United States Congressman Bill Huizenga has dismissed fears of a possible surprise military attack on Nigeria following President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about going “guns ablazing” in response to the alleged killing of Christians in the country.

Huizenga, who spoke during an interview with Arise TV, clarified that while Trump had spoken passionately about the issue, his comments should not be interpreted as a threat of military action.

The lawmaker said he was equally surprised by the tone of the President’s statement but insisted that the United States is unlikely to take any immediate military steps against Nigeria.

“I too was surprised by the comments that they came out; that the President came out that forcefully. I suspect that that is not a high priority of having actual military intervention, specifically in Nigeria,” Huizenga said.

He added that Trump’s main concern is the alleged persecution of Christians and other groups in Nigeria, not an invasion.

“But I think he does want to make sure that, from his view, the genocide that is happening specifically against Christians, but also others in Nigeria, needs to stop,” the congressman stated.

Huizenga suggested that economic measures, including sanctions, would be a more effective response than any military operation.

“While I don’t envision a surprise attack, I don’t envision that there’s going to be a military response. First, as we had talked about, I would first and foremost encourage them to look at the economic pressure and sanctions on both individuals and organisations. I think that would be the most effective,” he said.

He stressed that the Trump administration has generally favoured diplomacy and economic tools over warfare, describing the President as a pursuer of peace.

“Frankly, this President has been someone who has pursued peace rather than just expanding war. So I think he would be very selective before he did anything militarily,” Huizenga added.

Naija News reports that Trump’s comments had sparked international reactions after he reportedly vowed to respond “guns blazing” to reports of religious killings in Nigeria.

The statement had raised anxiety among Nigerians and international observers about possible US intervention.

Huizenga’s clarification now appears to ease those tensions, suggesting that Washington is more likely to explore diplomatic and economic strategies to pressure the Nigerian government on alleged human rights violations rather than resorting to force.

Tanzania: UN calls for probe into protests killings as hundreds face treason charges

November 11, 2025

The United Nations called on Tuesday for an investigation into the alleged killings of hundreds of people in protests that erupted during last month’s disputed elections in Tanzania.

The call for a probe comes as Tanzanian authorities have charged hundreds of people with treason over these demonstrations.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk said there was “an apparent attempt [from the government] to conceal evidence” of protesters’ deaths.

This accusation follows reports that security forces were taking bodies of those killed in the violence from mortuaries to undisclosed locations.

Türk urged authorities to release bodies to families for funerals. “Reports of families desperately searching everywhere for their loved ones, visiting one police station after another and one hospital after another are harrowing," he said.

The main opposition party, Chadema, has said that about 2,000 people were killed during three days of protests following the disputed poll.

The government has yet to give an official death toll. The UN said “hundreds” of people are believed to have been killed but was unable to verify the figures due to the volatile security situation in Tanzania and the country's internet shutdown that lasted for six days after the elections.

The Catholic Church in Tanzania has condemned the recent killings of protesters and warned that there would be no peace without justice.

Tanzanian authorities have charged hundreds of people with treason over the demonstrations linked to the disputed 29 October poll.

Wanted suspects included Josephat Gwajima, an influential preacher who had his church deregistered earlier this year after he criticised the government over rights abuses.

Police have also issued arrest warrants for some of the nation’s top opposition officials who hadn’t yet been detained.

Chadema leader Tundu Lissu has already been jailed for several months and also faces treason charges, after he called for electoral reforms ahead of last month’s vote.

Ten years after the Paris attacks, is France better at preventing violent extremism?

11/11/2025

"Very, very quickly, I was approached by a self-proclaimed Imam. He was more used to selling weapons and drugs, but he spoke Arabic well, knew the sacred texts of the Quran and had a certain charisma, so he styled himself as an Iman in the prison yard."

When a radical Islamist recruiter targeted Karim Mokhtari in prison, he knew all the right buttons to press.

"I was vulnerable to radical and violent indoctrination because I was suffering from an identity crisis, neglect, I craved recognition, self-esteem and confidence," says Mokhtari. "All of that creates fertile ground for proselytism of any kind, particularly the radical and violent sort."

Mokhtari had suffered severe abuse growing up in a violent household. He was 18 when he was sentenced to ten years in prison for having instigated an armed robbery.

"He kept pouring fuel on the fire that was already inside me," he says. "He gave me excuses to stay angry by telling me, 'Just look around you and you'll see that France doesn't love us.'"

The radical recruiter's playbook

This tactic is typical of a recruiter’s playbook, says Dr Guillaume Monod, a psychiatrist who began studying radicalisation in the wake of the 2015 Paris attacks.

"The first thing recruiters look for are people who are fragile. They don’t go straight for people who are already convinced of their ideology, whether it be jihadist, incel, or any other. What they look for first are people who are fragile, who need psychological, emotional support, who need friends and to feel part of a group. So it's important to understand that often, it's the connection that is created first, and the ideology that comes in later."

But Mokhtari eventually found the strength to turn his back on the recruiter.

"I remember this self-proclaimed Imam came up to me with a very, very dark look, to tell me that I was now a Muslim and that my duty as a Muslim was to defend Islam. And according to him, defending Islam meant that I had to go kill the infidels wherever I found them. It was the first time in my life, I think, that I knew how to take a stand by saying ‘no’ in a determined way. It was the best decision I could have made during my entire sentence, because that is not Islam."

It was the late 1990s, and back then, says Mokhtari, "It wasn’t Daesh (Islamic State group), it was al Qaeda." And there were "zero programmes in place to prevent radicalisation. So the prison service did what it could, by transferring certain inmates to different prisons in the hope of stopping the spread of the extremist ideologies."

Wake-up call

The 2015 terrorist attacks – beginning with the Charlie Hebdo murders in January and culminating in the coordinated November 13 assaults that killed more than 100 – was a wake-up call for France.

Monod says that, before 2015, "There was a big problem because no one in France knew anything about radicalisation, especially in prisons."

Afterwards that all changed. "All sectors of society mobilised. Not only the justice system, prison service and psychiatry sectors, but also the state education sector, child protection, charitable organisations and social sciences."

He says the effort has paid off. "In just a few years, we have been able to obtain a real understanding of the phenomenon."

Monod, who has so far worked with around 150 prisoners suspected of having been radicalised, says his focus is on their susceptibility to extremism.

"I'm not interested in the religious question, I'm not interested in the political question. That's not my area," he explains. "My work is about the psychological mechanisms, about the psychological vulnerabilities that cause certain people, in certain cases, to find themselves indoctrinated into a sectarian and violent ideology."

From 'deradicalisation' to 'disengagement'

Today, the term 'deradicalisation' is avoided by many of those working in the field. "In France, having an opinion is not an offence," says Monod. "Today, rather than talking about ‘deradicalisation’ we talk about ‘disengagement’ from violence." That is the goal of Monod’s work, which he says is seeing positive results.

"There are some patients I knew in detention, whom I've heard news about following their release, and many have completely abandoned their violent behavior. Some remain in a fairly sectarian ideology, but what matters most is that they've abandoned their violent behaviour."

'A network of professionals'

Mokhtari has made it his life’s mission to prevent people from turning to violence and extremism through his two associations, 100Murs (100Walls) and Les Chiens de L’Ombre (Dogs of the Shadows). He speaks regularly at prisons about his experience and was among the first to earn a Radicalisation Prevention Certificate, a diploma created in 2017 by political scientist and researcher Elyamine Settoul.

The diploma – designed for people from diverse sectors including education, the police, the judiciary, prison services, social services and intelligence – has allowed for "a network of professionals to develop", Settoul says.

And they are noticing shifts in the radicalisation threat: "They’re getting younger, and it’s evolving."

'Radicalisation is the same as it always was'

Settoul discusses the case of the leader of a far-right extremist group whom he interviewed in prison – highlighting the similarities between his trajectory and those of radical Islamists – in his recent book, "Suprémaciste. Anatomie d’un parcours d’ultradroite" (Supremacist. Anatomy of a far-right extremist journey).

He says the mechanisms behind radicalisation have not greatly changed in the last 10 years. "Often it’s the classic problems like bullying at school, children who feel they don't fit in, dysfunctional families. They close in on themselves," he explains.

The process is then turbo-charged by the internet, particularly social networks. "They get stuck in an algorithmic echo chamber. They radicalise among themselves. They can spend all night watching jihadist or far-right extremist videos," Settoul says.

"But the radicalisation process is the same as it always was. It starts with a problem in the real world. Only now, the virtual world is accentuating the phenomenon. It’s important to stay vigilant."

South London teenager faces terrorism charge over trying to join Islamic State in Syria

12 Nov 2025

A teenager has been charged with a terrorism offence relating to attempting to travel to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State, the Metropolitan Police said. The force said Chafik Aziz, 18, of Wallington, South London, was charged on Tuesday with an offence contrary to the Terrorism Act 2006, following an investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing London.

The details were that between July 1 and November 5 this year, with the intention of committing acts of terrorism, he "engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention, namely attempted to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State".

The Met said officers arrested an 18-year-old man on November 4 at Gatwick Airport, initially on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation, and he was detained in custody.

The following day he was rearrested under the Terrorism Act 2000, and on Thursday officers obtained a warrant of further detention at Westminster Magistrates' Court, meaning the teenager could be kept in custody until Tuesday.

"After carrying out further inquiries and following liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service, the above charges were authorised against Aziz on November 11," the force said.

"He has been remanded in police custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday November 12."

Marching bands forum given £40k funding to combat anti-Muslim race hate tensions

November 12, 2025

A group representing flute bands in Belfast has received £40,000 in funding earmarked for addressing anti-Muslim tensions following racially motivated disorder in the city last year.

The Belfast Bands Forum has been awarded the South Belfast tranche of funding for the Community Recovery Fund.

It was introduced by the British government in response to race riots which began in Southport and spread to other parts of the UK in August 2024.

A £600,000 fund was announced for Northern Ireland by UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner following the racist violence last August, which saw rioting following anti-immigration protests in Belfast, with migrant-owned businesses and homes attacked by protestors.

The funding was distributed by Belfast City Council, including one section which provided £160,000 to community groups in four parts of Belfast - Greater Falls (west), Woodvale (north), Connswater (east) and Sandy Row/Donegall Road in the south of the city.

The worst violence seen in Belfast during the riots was centred in the south Belfast area.

While the projects for the three other areas of the city had funding awarded and commenced in March 2025, there was a months-long delay in awarding the south Belfast tranche.

However, Belfast City Council has now confirmed to The Irish News that the £40,000 funding will be released to the Belfast Bands Forum.

A council spokesperson said the group “will be working with local schools and community partners through a range of cultural integration projects and programmes.”

A submission by Belfast Bands Forum to the council said its project aims to “strengthen community leadership, promote inclusion and rebuild trust between communities following the events of August 2024”.

The project includes three aspects, including “giving 24 local leaders the skills to de-escalate emerging issues and promote inclusion”.

It also includes “community outreach and tuition projects…using music, storytelling and shared cultural traditions”.

The project will also deliver “a shared event which will showcase Belfast’s diverse cultures, through music, dance and food.

An open call for funding from the Community Recovery Fund earlier this year from the council said it was “seeking proposals to tackle hate and intolerance, focusing on reducing race hate crime and hate speech”.

According to a council action plan, the expected outcomes from groups applying for the cash was “a reduction in anti-Muslim hate”, “increased integration” and to “rebuild social trust and promote cohesion between communities”.

Belfast Bands Forum has been contacted for comment.

The group was set up earlier this year “to promote marching bands within the Belfast area and show the positive aspects as well as the community and personal impact those bands create”.

The forum is represented on the Executive and subcommittees for the 2026 Fleadh Ceoil, which is to be held in Belfast next year.

Emmet McDonough-Brown, Alliance Party councillor for the Botanic area, welcomed the clarity on how the funding was to be used.

Cllr McDonough-Brown said: “The dreadful scenes we’ve seen play out on the streets of our city these two previous summers have made clear the serious need for robust interventions to tackle racial and xenophobic prejudice and to foster community cohesion, particularly in South Belfast, one of the most culturally diverse areas in all of Northern Ireland.

“With that in mind, we’re glad to finally see clarity around where this funding has gone. There must now be a focus on ensuring all resources are invested effectively in programmes and initiatives that promote education, understanding, inclusion and togetherness, wholly and unequivocally.”

Mixed response to Leavesden Road Baptist Church mosque plan

11TH NOVEMBER

By Fintan McGuinness

Plans to convert another Watford church into a mosque and community facility have sparked a mixed response - with some saying "use it or lose it".

Leavesden Road Baptist Church could be refurbished and reopened as a “place of worship and community hall”, which the Watford Observer understands will involve a mosque, under a planning application submitted last week.

It had closed in 2021, as the church said the pandemic put “extra pressures on an already stretched congregation” struggling to maintain the Grade II listed building.

After being initially left vacant, it has more recently been used by local groups including Watford Islamic Centre despite no permanent plan to secure its future being agreed.

The proposals went live on the borough council's website days after full plans to turn St Thomas' United Reform Church into a mosque were also unveiled.

Three objections have since been officially submitted for the Leavesden Road application, with two highlighting potential “harmful alterations to a listed building”, which they say has “high architectural and historic value”.

“The submission lacks substantive detail as to how significant interventions to the building would be carried out,” one said, referring to potential internal changes such as removing pews as well as external alterations and a planned extension.

“The proposed development, and level of ill-conceived works, would incur the total loss of significance of a designated heritage asset.”

Another highlighted the impact on parking in the "already heavily parked" Leavesden Road, where they live.

As well as the official consultation responses, there were also many social media comments criticising the potential decision to turn a Christian place of worship into a mosque.

However, others highlighted that the alternative is for the building, described as at risk of falling into “disrepair” in application documents, to be left vacant.

“Good news. At least it will be used,” one commentor said, while several suggested those looking to keep churches open should attend and support congregations still in operation rather than focussing on those which are already shut.

As well as providing a place of worship, the plan also incorporates a community facility function and a nursery.

The organ would be relocated to a church in the Netherlands, according to the applicant.

Blackburn hub for Shia Muslims gets backdated planning nod

11TH NOVEMBER

By Bill Jacobs

A Blackburn town centre premises formerly used as a hub for the deaf can continue to be used as a place of worship for members of the town's Shia community.

Planners have granted the application for the property in Heaton Street, in the King Street Conservation Area, backdated approval for the use with seven conditions.

The application for planning permission from Kaysar Hussain of the Ali Spiritual Centre followed a visit from enforcement officers.

It has been in use as a spiritual centre for the Shia community since June last year.

The premises were previously used by the East Lancashire Deaf Society, which folded in June 2019.

A planning officer’s report recommending approval said: “The application site relates to a commercial three-storey mid-terrace unit lying to the western side of Heaton Street in Blackburn.

“The site is surrounded by a mixture of residential and commercial uses to all sides, including Bramwell House, occupied by the Salvation Army.

“The unit lies within the King Street Conservation Area and to the edge of the Blackburn town centre.

“The premises were formally in use as a day centre for hearing impairment and had been vacant for six months prior to occupancy by the current tenant.

“The submission documents state that the site has been in use as a spiritual centre since June 2024.

“The application has been submitted on the back of intervention from enforcement colleagues and is therefore retrospective. No external alterations or additions are sought.

“The submitted statement outlines the use of the premises is infrequent and significantly different to a typical mosque operation that does not include a madrassah and is used for Friday prayers only and during certain days of the month, where 35 to 40 people attend in the evenings from 6pm till 10pm.

“Currently, the gatherings only consist of speeches, mediation and remembrance of prophets.

“Friday prayers are attended by 20 to 25 attendees.

“A focus towards community cohesion with the focal point of youth development is encouraged during sessions, and the initiative is open to all faiths and backgrounds.

“The centre is operated by volunteers.

“There is no off-street parking provision, however, the application is accompanied by a car parking lease agreement at a nearby retail unit 60 metres away to be used when the business is closed in the evening, together with an agreement for spaces to be available on Friday communal prayers when the trading business is generally low on customers.

“The centre must only operate Monday to Sunday 11am to 10pm.”

Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer resigns

November 11, 2025

JERUSALEM: Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who played a leading role in negotiations during the Gaza war and was a close confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, resigned on Tuesday.

His departure follows weeks of speculation in Israeli media and marks the end of a tenure that began in late 2022, when he was tapped for the post after years as Israel’s ambassador to Washington.

“I am writing to inform you of my decision to end my position as minister for strategic affairs,” Dermer wrote in a two-page letter to Netanyahu released to the media.

There was no immediate response to a request for comment from the prime minister’s office.

The US-born Dermer wrote that when he became minister of strategic affairs in December 2022, he promised his family he would serve for no more than two years and twice he extended it with their blessing.

He wrote the first time was to work with Netanyahu to remove the existential threat of Iran’s military nuclear capability in June and the second was to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza in October and the return of Israel’s hostages held in Gaza.

“What I am to expect in the future I don’t know but one thing I know for sure: In all that I will do, I will continue to do my part to secure the future of the Jewish people,” he wrote.

Dermer was one of Netanyahu’s most trusted advisers, negotiating the October ceasefire with both the Trump administration and Arab countries.

Dermer was ambassador to Washington from 2013-2021. His service there overlapped with Republican President Donald Trump’s first term from 2017-2021.

Many Democrats regarded Dermer as having gotten too close to the Republicans during his Washington tenure, undermining the bipartisan relationships nurtured by previous Israeli envoys in the US capital.

Exiled Syrian smuggled out proof of Assad’s cruelty

November 11, 2025

DAMASCUS: He waited for his brother-in-law to cross the front line smuggling documents stolen from the Syrian dictatorship’s archives. Detection could mean dismemberment or death, but they were committed to exposing the industrial-scale violence used to keep President Bashar Assad in power.

Ussama Uthman, now 59, was building a vast record of the brutality — photographs that showed Assad’s government was engaging in systematic torture and extrajudicial killings.

Now, safely in exile in France and with Assad having fallen in a surprise offensive last year, Uthman is sharing how he, his wife and her brother teamed up to smuggle evidence of the horrific crimes out from under Syria’s infamous surveillance apparatus as war tore the country apart.

The photos of broken bodies and torture sites — records were apparently kept to show orders were being followed — began appearing online in 2014.

They spurred US sanctions, and are being used to prosecute suspected war crimes and help Syrians find out what happened to family members who disappeared.

“We have hundreds of thousands of mothers waiting for news of their loved ones,” said Uthman.

During a recent interview at a secret location in northern France the only time Uthman’s voice broke was when he recounted sending a woman photos of a brutalized body and asking if she recognized her son.

“I send her five snapshots of her son’s body, torn under Bashar Assad’s whips, and she rejoices. She says, ‘Thank God, I have confirmed that he is dead,’” he recalled. “This sadness should have kept our flags at half-staff in Syria for years.”

With the Arab Spring sweeping through the Middle East in 2011, protests in the southern city of Daraa inspired demonstrations throughout Syria. The government responded with force, but rather than crushing the demonstrations, the brutality sparked a civil war that spurred foreign intervention and pitted a patchwork of rebel groups against the armor and air power of the military and Assad’s allies.

When news broke that first year of a massacre in Hama, Uthman, a construction engineer from the Damascus suburb of Al-Tall, swore he’d help topple Assad.

He didn’t know how until he got a call from his wife’s brother Farid Al-Mazhan, a military police officer who asked him to meet in person — electronic communications were too risky.

Al-Mazhan showed Uthman gory images taken by photographers in the military forensic pathology department that he helped run. He said he could access more.

The two launched a secret operation that would eventually smuggle more than 53,000 photographs out of Syria showing evidence of torture, disease and starvation in the country’s lockups.

As an officer, Al-Mazhan could pass government-run checkpoints; his connections in the opposition-held town where he lived and eventually Uthman’s secret coordination with rebels enabled him to cross checkpoints staffed by their fighters.

He would then secretly pass CDs, hard drives and USB sticks containing photos and other documents to Uthman. He also slipped them to his sister, Khawla Al-Mazhan, who is married to Uthman. She was the first to suggest using the photos to try to topple Assad.

“Why don’t we use these images to bring down the regime?” Uthman recalled her saying.

Uthman adopted the nom de guerre Sami. Farid Al-Mazhan took Caesar. Their operation would become known as the Caesar Files.

Deciding to escape Syria — an estimated 6 million people fled during the war — the team uploaded 55 gigabytes of photos and documents dating from May 2011 to August 2014 to a foreign server. They then began furtively moving their extended families to neighboring countries. Diplomats eventually helped Uthman’s family settle in France in 2014.

Once safely out of Syria, they began publishing the material, sparking immediate and widespread condemnation of Assad.

As families scoured the ghastly archive for signs of what happened to their loved ones, the team gave copies to European prosecutors. Authorities in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland have arrested or initiated legal proceedings against former Syrian officials accused of torture and killings.

Israeli settlers attack two Palestinian villages in the West Bank

November 11, 2025

JERUSALEM: Dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked a pair of Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, setting fire to vehicles and other property before clashing with Israeli soldiers sent to halt the rampage, Israeli and Palestinian officials said.

It was the latest in a series of attacks by young settlers in the West Bank.

Israeli police said four Israelis were arrested in what it described as “extremist violence,” while the Israeli military said four Palestinians were wounded. Police and Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency said they were investigating.

Videos on social media showed two charred trucks engulfed in flames, with a nearby building on fire. Settler violence has surged since the war in Gaza erupted two years ago. The attacks have intensified in recent weeks as Palestinians harvest their olive trees in an annual ritual.

Earlier on Tuesday, tens of thousands of Israelis attended the funeral of an Israeli soldier whose remains had been held in Gaza for 11 years, overflowing and blocking surrounding streets as somber crowds stood with Israeli flags.

The burial of Lt. Hadar Goldin was a moment of closure for his family, which had traveled the world in a public campaign seeking his return. The huge turnout also reflected the importance for the broader public in Israel, where Goldin became a household name.

Hamas returned his remains on Sunday as part of the US-brokered ceasefire deal that began last month. The bodies of four hostages taken in the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, are still in Gaza.

Settler violence in the West Bank

The UN humanitarian office last week reported more Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank in October than in any other month since it began keeping track in 2006. There were over 260 attacks, the office said.

Palestinians and human rights workers accuse the Israeli army and police of failing to halt attacks by settlers. Israel’s government is dominated by West Bank settlers, and the police force is overseen by Cabinet minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a hard-line settler leader.

In Tuesday’s incident, the army said soldiers initially responded to settler attacks in the villages of Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf. It said the settlers fled to a nearby industrial zone and attacked soldiers sent to the scene and damaged a military vehicle.

Palestinian official Muayyad Shaaban, who heads the government’s Commission against the Wall and Settlements, said the settlers set fire to four dairy trucks, farmland, tin shacks and tents belonging to a Bedouin community.

He said the attacks were part of a campaign to drive Palestinians from their land and accused Israel of giving the settlers protection and immunity. He called for sanctions against groups that “sponsor and support the colonial settlement terrorism project.”

French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the attacks during his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris on Tuesday, saying that “settler violence and the acceleration of settlement projects are reaching new heights, threatening the stability of the West Bank.”

Palestinians in Gaza still struggling to access food

Displaced Palestinians in central Gaza said they continue to rely heavily on charity kitchens for their only daily meal, as soaring market prices and the lack of income leave them struggling.

Scores of people, most of them children, lined up with empty pots at a charity kitchen in Nuseirat refugee camp on Tuesday waiting to be served rice — the only food available that day.

“The rockets and planes stopped but increasing living costs has been the hardest weapon used against us,” said Mohamed Al-Naqlah, a displaced Palestinian.

On Tuesday, Gaza’s Health Ministry said the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has risen to 69,182. Its count, generally considered by independent experts as reliable, does not distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says more than half of those killed were women and children.

The latest war began with the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel when around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed, and 251 people were kidnapped.

Close adviser to Netanyahu resigns

Cabinet Minister Ron Dermer, one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s closest confidants, announced his resignation on Tuesday, citing family reasons.

In a letter, Dermer said he had promised his family to serve two years but extended his term by an additional year to deal with Iran’s nuclear program and “to end the war in Gaza on Israel’s terms and bring our hostages home.”

The US-born Dermer is a former Israeli ambassador to Washington. As strategic affairs minister, he served as Netanyahu’s envoy throughout the war in dealing with the United States and ceasefire negotiations.

Funeral for soldier whose remains were held 11 years

Goldin was 23 when he was killed two hours after a ceasefire took effect in the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas. For years before the 2023 attack, posters with the faces of Goldin and Oron Shaul, another soldier whose body was abducted in the 2014 war, stared down from intersections.

Israel’s military long ago determined that Goldin had been killed based on evidence found in the tunnel where his body was taken, including a blood-soaked shirt and prayer fringes. On Tuesday, it announced it had dismantled the tunnel shaft where his body was found. The military retrieved Shaul’s body in January.

Eulogies from Goldin’s siblings, parents, and former fiancee at his funeral never mentioned Netanyahu, who was prime minister when Goldin was kidnapped and for most of the period since. They thanked the Israeli military, including reserve soldiers, who tirelessly searched for Goldin’s body over the years.

Netanyahu did not attend the funeral, though Israel’s military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, gave a eulogy on behalf of the military.

For years, Israel had four hostages in Gaza: Goldin, Shaul, and two Israelis with mental health issues who had crossed into Gaza on their own and were held since 2014 and 2015. All four were returned in the past year.

Six ancient statues stolen from Syria’s National Museum of Damascus

November 11, 2025

DAMASCUS: Six ancient statues have been stolen from the National Museum of Damascus, which is one of the Middle East’s oldest cultural institutions and houses a collection showing Syria’s archaeological and artistic heritage.

A source at the museum told Reuters that a thief broke a glass display case on Monday and apparently stayed inside the building until evening.

Authorities have launched an investigation, according to the head of internal security in Damascus, Osama Mohammad Khair Atkeh.

Khair Atkeh, quoted by state news agency SANA, said specialized teams were conducting tracking and search operations to arrest those responsible and recover the stolen artefacts.

Security guards and officials were being questioned to determine the circumstances of the incident, he added.

Established in 1919, the National Museum closed in 2012 because of fighting in the capital at the start of the country’s civil war. It partially reopened in 2018, and resumed full operations in January 2025, a month after the opposition toppled former President Bashar Assad.

Palestinian medics record 6,000 amputations in Gaza Strip

LONDON: Palestinian health institutions in the Gaza Strip have reported that 6,000 amputations have been carried out since the Israeli military campaign in the territory began in late 2023.

Children account for 25 percent of all amputations, while women make up 12.7 percent. Both groups urgently require long-term rehabilitation programs, according to the Wafa news agency.

The shortage of medical resources and assistive devices worsens the suffering of amputees, affecting thousands of wounded individuals and their families in Gaza, they added.

They called for international organizations to support rehabilitation services and psychosocial support, especially for children facing permanent disabilities at a young age.

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in October has ended two years of military conflict in Gaza. Israel is accused of committing genocide in the region, resulting in more than 65,000 deaths, the majority of whom are women and children.

Iraqi voters turn out in numbers as region watches on

November 11, 2025

BAGHDAD: Iraqis voted for a new parliament Tuesday, with an unexpectedly high turnout of more than 55 percent, at a pivotal time for the country and the wider region.

Iraq, which has long been vulnerable to proxy wars and is closely watched by Iran and the United States, has recently regained a sense of stability.

But, even as it tries to move past two decades of war since a US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein, the country of 46 million suffers from poor infrastructure and public services, mismanagement and corruption.

Iraq’s electoral commission said more than 12 million people took part out of 21 million eligible voters, despite influential Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr calling on his supporters to boycott the vote.

The unexpected turnout is a sharp jump from the record low of 41 percent in 2021, belying a sense of apathy and skepticism.

Preliminary results are expected within 24 hours of polls closing, but Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, who hopes for a second term, is expected to secure a large bloc but fall short of a majority.

Many voters told reporters that the elections wouldn’t bring meaningful change to their daily lives and said that the vote was a sham that only benefits political elites and regional powers.

No new leadership contenders have recently emerged, with the same Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish politicians remaining at the forefront.

- Failed boycott? -

Political analyst Hamzeh Hadad said the higher turnout, even if still lower than before 2021 “is a positive step for Iraq” and shows that Sadr’s “influence is really limited to his followers.”

“It means no political leader can hold back democratic elections in Iraq,” he added.

The ballot this year was marked by the absence of Sadr who retains a devoted following of millions among Iraq’s majority Shiite population.

In 2021, Sadr secured the largest bloc before withdrawing from parliament following a dispute with Shiite parties which culminated in deadly fighting in Baghdad.

IN the years since US-led forces ousted Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, Iraq’s long-oppressed Shiite majority has dominated, with most parties retaining ties to neighboring Iran.

By convention in post-invasion Iraq, a Shiite Arab holds the powerful post of prime minister and a Sunni Arab that of parliament speaker, while the largely ceremonial presidency goes to a Kurd.

Sudani is likely to win but, with no single party or list expected to achieve an outright majority, must win over a coalition that can secure enough allies to become the largest bloc.

Sudani rose to power in 2022 with the backing of the Coordination Framework, a ruling alliance of Shiite parties and factions all linked to Iran.

Although they run separately, Shiite parties within the Coordination Framework are expected to reunite after elections and likely pick the next premier.

Sudani has touted his success in keeping Iraq relatively unscathed by the turmoil engulfing the Middle East.

Sunni parties contested separately, with the former speaker Mohammed Al-Halbussi expected to do well.

In the autonomous Kurdistan region, the rivalry between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan remains.

- Delicate balance -

On the ground however, Iraqis said they cast their votes hoping for a change.

“We have unemployment and people are tired, we need progress,” said Ali Abed, 57, in the northern city of Mosul.

But the next prime minister has also another difficult task.

He will have to maintain the delicate balance between Iraq’s allies, Iran and the US, even more so now that the Middle East is undergoing seismic changes, with new alliances forming and old powers weakening.

Even as its influence wanes elsewhere, Iran hopes to preserve its power in Iraq — the only close ally that stayed out of Israel’s crosshairs after the heavy losses Iran’s other allies have incurred in Lebanon, Yemen and Gaza since 2023.

Tehran has meanwhile focused on other interests in Iraq — challenging the US with powerful Tehran-backed armed groups, and keeping the Iraqi market open to products from its crippled economy.

Washington, which still wields influence in Iraq and has forces deployed there, conversely hopes to break Iran’s grip, and has been pressuring Baghdad to disarm the pro-Iran groups.

Four potential obstacles in House vote to end US shutdown

November 12, 2025

Jude Sheerin

A day after the US Senate passed a spending bill to end the longest-ever government shutdown, the budget fight now moves to the House of Representatives.

The lower chamber of Congress is expected to vote this week on the funding measure.

Unlike in the Senate, if House Republicans stay united, they don't need any Democrats to pass the budget. But the margin for error is razor thin.

Here are four potential hold-ups for the budget, before it can clear Congress and land on the president's desk for signing into law.

Will House Republicans budge on healthcare?

A key sticking point throughout the shutdown has been a desire on the part of Democrats to attach to the spending bill a renewal of tax credits that make health insurance less expensive for 24 million Americans.

Senate Republicans instead only agreed to grant Democrats a vote in December on whether to extend the subsidies – something they had already offered weeks ago.

And House Speaker Mike Johnson would not commit on Monday to allowing a vote in his chamber on the tax credits.

This entails a fair degree of political risk for Republicans, however. If they torpedo the subsidies, health coverage premiums could rocket, handing Democrats a ready-made campaign issue for next year's midterm elections.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a conservative Republican congresswoman from Georgia, has broken ranks with President Donald Trump to warn that her party must ensure health insurance premiums do not spike.

As the clock ticks down to the subsidies expiring by the end of December, Republicans are working out their plan.

They want income caps on who can receive the tax credits, and are proposing the tax dollars bypass insurance companies and go straight to individuals - although the details are unclear.

How intense will House Democratic opposition be?

Out of power in Washington, where Trump's Republicans control the House and Senate, Democrats appeared finally to have some political wind in their sails after a handful of election wins last week in Virginia, New Jersey and New York City.

But those victories, like the shutdown fight, have accentuated strategic tensions between the pragmatic and progressive, or left-wing, factions of the party.

The Democratic left is furious at defectors who voted with Senate Republicans to pass the budget on Monday, seeing this as a capitulation to Trump.

From that wing of the party, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said giving up the fight was a "horrific mistake". California Governor Gavin Newsom called it "surrender".

Congressman Greg Casar of Texas, the chairman of the House Progressive Caucus, warned: "A deal that doesn't reduce healthcare costs is a betrayal of millions of Americans counting on Democrats to fight for them."

However, centrist lawmakers like Jared Golden of Maine, who represents one of the most conservative districts in the nation held by any Democrat, may cross the aisle.

Golden, who recently announced he won't run for re-election, is likely to vote for the package, his office indicated to Axios, a political outlet, on Monday.

Another moderate Democrat, Henry Cuellar of Texas, could help get the Republicans' spending plan over the line.

"It's past time to put country over party and get our government working again for the American people," he posted on social media on Sunday.

Do Republicans have the votes?

Republicans control the House, holding 219 seats against the Democrats' 213, but can only afford to lose two votes to pass the spending plan.

While most House Republicans are expected to support the funding package, given that Trump backs it, fiscal hawks in the party will raise objections.

Thomas Massie of Kentucky - who has repeatedly voted against such stopgap funding extensions - is expected to vote no.

The proposed deal would leave the federal government on a path to keep adding about $1.8tn (£1.4tn) a year to its $38tn of debt.

Rand Paul of Kentucky cited this spending glut as he became the only Republican in the Senate to vote against the budget.

The Senate plan would extend funding only until January, but the conservative House Freedom Caucus wants a budget that would last longer and do more to rein in spending.

Will travel chaos delay the return to Washington?

House Speaker Mike Johnson has kept the chamber out of session for the last seven weeks to focus pressure on Senate Democrats to make a shutdown deal.

Now he is urging lawmakers to start returning immediately to Washington with a vote set for Wednesday afternoon at the earliest.

But members of Congress face the same flight delays that have plagued other Americans during the spending impasse.

From Tuesday, the rate of reduction in US flights will increase to 6%. Cuts have been made as the nation's busiest airports reduce their capacity to cope with shutdown-related sickness by air traffic controllers, who have been working without pay during the shutdown.

Record-cold temperatures and heavy snow have also hit the Great Lakes region in the Midwest, adding to the delays.

Indiana joins growing US battle over redrawing electoral maps

November 12, 2025

Max Matza

Indiana has become the latest battleground in a growing national clash over redistricting, as Republicans and Democrats race to redraw congressional maps to alter the balance of power in Washington.

Lawmakers in California and Texas, the two most populous US states with a combined population of over 70 million, have already approved redistricting lines that favour one political party.

Over the summer, Texas Republicans passed a map creating five additional congressional seats likely to favour their party.

California lawmakers hit back by approving their own redrawn maps - designed to counterbalance Texas' gains. Those maps will require approval from voters before they can be used in the 2026 election.

Missouri followed soon after, with the governor ordering a special session so lawmakers could work towards redrawing a new map designed to add one more Republican seat.

And now Indiana has joined the fray. After President Donald Trump put pressure on Republican governors nationwide, leaders in the state have called a special session to redraw congressional boundaries, set for December.

In a twist, Utah, which has a Republican governor, will have redone maps that will favour Democrats, after a judge's order on 11 November.

The political tug-of-war over redrawing electoral maps is likely to intensify, with both parties seeking any advantage ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Here's what you should know about America's fight over congressional redistricting.

Why is this happening?

The battle began in Texas this summer, when the Republican-majority legislature took the unusual step of re-drawing congressional seats in the middle of the decade - in a deliberate effort to send more Republicans to the House of Representatives in Washington.

The move came amid pressure from Trump for Republican-led states to carve up their districts in order to maintain full Republican control of Congress after the 2026 election.

Currently, Republicans hold a very slim majority in the 435-member House of Representatives. If only a few Democrats win conservative seats, it could shift the control - likely stunting Trump's legislative agenda in Congress.

The Lone Star State's goal was to add five additional congressional seats, which would favour Republicans.

California responded by re-drawing its own districts to boost Democratic representation by five seats, in an attempt to cancel out the move by Texas. Trump has responded by ordering federal poll watchers to California to monitor voting on the redistricting proposition.

Meanwhile, Missouri lawmakers passed new congressional maps in September. Ohio and North Carolina announced plans to do the same and Indiana is the latest state to follow suit.

What is redistricting?

The US House of Representatives is made up of 435 legislators who are elected every two years.

They represent districts with boundaries determined in processes set by their state governments.

Who draws the lines, and how, can go a long way in shaping the ideological tilt of the district and the likelihood that it elects a Democrat or a Republican.

At the moment, the House rests on a knife's edge, with Democrats only needing to seize three more seats to flip the chamber's control.

The president's party historically loses seats in the midterm elections.

If Democrats seize the House, they can launch sweeping investigations of presidential actions, as Democrats did in the second half of Trump's first term and Republicans did in Joe Biden's final two years.

Why is everyone talking about redistricting now?

Each member of the US House represents a district in their home state. The districts are typically set after the US Census is conducted every decade to account for the states' population changes.

But Republicans and Democrats are now fighting to redraw the maps mid-decade, either to help or block Trump's agenda. By changing the make-ups of the districts, each party hopes to capture more seats in the House.

The effort in Texas hit a roadblock in early August after the state's Democrats fled the state in a bid to deny the quorum needed to pass the Republican redistricting measure.

Democrats returned after two weeks when California, a Democratic stronghold, announced plans to counter the effort in Texas. After they returned, the chamber voted 88-52 to create five new seats.

The measure was swiftly endorsed by the Senate and then signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott.

Democrats and civil rights groups have said Texas' new maps will dilute voting power from minorities, in violation of the federal Voting Rights Act, and have filed a lawsuit.

How does redistricting work and is it legal?

Gerrymandering - the redrawing of electoral boundaries to favour a political party - is practised by both main parties and is legal unless ruled to be racially motivated.

But it is extremely unusual for the president to publicly back a state's effort to create partisan advantage.

While both Democratic and Republican-dominated states have faced criticism and court battles over their US House maps, rarely do lawmakers so explicitly acknowledge the partisan intention behind their actions.

Critics argue that the process allows politicians to pick their voters, rather than voters picking their elected officials.

It can lead to some very wonky-shaped maps, in which certain groups are lumped together regardless of their geographic proximity.

In 2019, the Supreme Court took away the power of the courts to block political gerrymandering.

"Federal judges have no license to reallocate political power between the two major political parties," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his ruling at the time.

Where is redistricting happening?

Redistricting could have significant implications in the 2026 midterms, and has become an urgent issue for state lawmakers.

Illinois, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Maryland are among the Democratic-led states discussing countermeasures to the Texas plan.

Indiana and Florida are also now looking into redistricting in order to boost Republican representation in Washington.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, a Republican said the new map that legislators approved will "ensure our districts and Constitution truly put Missouri values first".

California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose state is leading the Democratic charge, has pledged to "fight fire with fire" by replicating trying to boost his party's chances of victory.

But the process in California is slow, due to a 2008 law designed to make the process less partisan.

On 21 August, the California statehouse voted to have the new maps put on the special election ballot in November, to let voters decide if they should shift.

The November vote may prove controversial, as voters had previously approved a process that leaves it up to a non-partisan commission to decide how voting lines should be drawn.

In November, a judge in Utah rejected an electoral map drawn by Republican lawmakers and ordered the adoption of a new map that would create one Democrat-leaning district in the state. Utah has four districts total, which are all represented by Republicans in the House.

The judge previously ruled lawmakers had disregarded a rule passed by voters that electoral maps cannot be drawn to favour - or disfavour - an incumbent in the seat or be decided using "partisan political information".

All four of Utah's congressional districts are currently held by Republicans. The move is expected to end up giving Democrats and advantage in Salt Lake City, the capital of the Beehive State. Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris won Salt Lake County in 2024, with nearly 54% of the vote.

New York wants to enter the fray, but there the process takes even longer, as the state constitution would need to be changed.

"In New York, we'll confront Trump's legal insurrection head-on," New York Governor Kathy Hochul pledged.

"We'll meet him on the same field and beat him at his own game."

According to experts, states where Republicans control most of government may have an easier time redrawing their maps.

Democratic-controlled states have more legal and constitutional barriers designed to protect against political gerrymandering.

Several smaller states, including Delaware and Vermont, only get one seat in the House - making them largely irrelevant to the current fight.

But with so much at stake, even these smaller states may get in on the action eventually.

'Forced labor, withholding visa documents': H-1B visa holder from India sues US company; 'Squid Game for Indians'

Nov 12, 2025

Amrutesh Vallabhaneni, an H-1B visa holder in the US, has brought a lawsuit against his employer, accusing the company of forced labor, labor trafficking and withholding visa documents, Breitbart News reported. Jay Palmer, Vallabhaneni's consultant who prepared the lawsuit, said it is a Squid Game for Indian workers in the US job market, as the ultimate goal is to stay in America, surviving the exploitative culture, created by Indian CEOs. These Indian-origin CEOs import their "home-country caste discrimination politics" to their workplaces in the US, Palmer said.

According to the report, Vallabhaneni studied in India, got an F-1 student visa and a loan to attend a US college in 2015. Then he got OPT (Optional Practical Training), worked at a New Jersey company and then in 2018 moved to the company that he sued. He moved to the company as they promised him H-1B. The lawsuit said that the company violated laws and asked Vallabhaneni to pay his own salary for a period of six months. They also did not pay Vallabhaneni the prevailing wage.

But after all this, Vallabhaneni was not free to leave the company as they allegedly threatened to withdraw his H-1B if he did not comply with their requests. The company also promised a green card but continued to pressure Vallabhaneni to accept their terms and conditions; otherwise he would have to leave the US.

"Despite being guaranteed a wage by the DOL, AV (Amrutesh Vallabhaneni) often barely had enough money for rent and living expenses for himself and his family. Because of the broken promises and inconsistent pay, his health insurance lapsed, he missed credit card payments, and he and his wife lacked access to needed healthcare. At one point, AV suffered a serious leg injury, but he couldn’t see a doctor," the lawsuit said.

The company extracted a huge amount of money from AV, forcing him to pay all the visa fees and keeping him on the hook. The report said Vallabhaneni is still working with the company as he waits for the Green Card.

‘Jamaat-e-Islami Will Cease To Exist After Next Polls’: BNP Secretary General

Nov 12, 2025

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said Jamaat-e-Islami would "cease to exist" after next year's national election, urging people to remain cautious of their "hypocrisy".

"Jamaat says PR [proportional representation system] must be introduced or elections won't happen. Why are you so afraid of votes? Because you know you won't exist after the election," he said at a views-exchange meeting organised by BNP in Thakurgaon Sadar.

Mentioning that he does not understand PR, Fakhrul said people won't accept it. "We have always voted for candidates by their symbols -- sheaf of paddy, boat, or scale. Now, they say we must vote for parties, and that the parties will decide who becomes an MP."

Fakhrul also dismissed NCP, saying, "They claim to be a party, but I don't see them anywhere. They won't get votes. Yet, they echo Jamaat, demanding PR and certificates before elections."

Referring to Sheikh Hasina, he said, "Those who burn vehicles and destroy property while sitting comfortably in Delhi should not be allowed to return."

He also cautioned the interim government against imposing reforms beyond consensus. "For nine months, you discussed reforms with political parties and reached agreements. If you force anything outside of that, responsibility will be yours. The people will not accept it."

He criticised the government for scrapping plans to recruit music and physical education teachers in primary schools, saying such education is vital for children's development.

He also warned that delaying elections would turn Bangladesh into a failed state.

No polls without legal basis for July Charter: Jamaat Ameer

Nov 11, 2025

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today said there will be no election in the country unless the legal basis of the July National Charter is ensured.

He said this at a mass rally at Dhaka's Paltan intersection amid chanting slogans by thousands of leaders and activists of eight like-minded parties.

Jamaat and seven like-minded parties began their rally around 2:05pm, pressing for their five-point demand, which includes giving a legal basis to the July National Charter and holding the next national election under a proportional representation (PR) system.

The programme began with a recitation from the Quran, after which Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad declared the start of the rally.

Earlier in the day, leaders and activists started gathering at the Purana Paltan intersection for the joint rally of eight like-minded parties -- including Jamaat and Islami Andolan Bangladesh -- that are waging a simultaneous movement to press home their demands.

The rally, part of the second day's programme in the fifth phase of their ongoing movement, was scheduled to begin at 2:00pm.

Shafiqur said a new programme will be announced at the earliest possible time.

He said the top leaders of the eight-party alliance will hold a meeting after the rally.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Warns of Possible Strikes Inside Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

November 12, 2025

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif warned that Islamabad may launch strikes inside Afghanistan after deadly militant attacks in Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that Islamabad cannot rule out strikes on militant hideouts inside Afghanistan after recent attacks in Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, Asif said the country had been forced to act against those responsible for the deadly incidents that have raised security concerns nationwide.

He added that Pakistan should not “harbour any illusions” about the Taliban’s stance, stressing that the group was neither sympathetic to Pakistan nor interested in peace, despite three rounds of talks.

Asif further claimed that the Taliban administration consisted of various factions, some of which were connected to India and influenced by actors outside Afghanistan.

He noted that Pakistan’s only demand from the Taliban was to prevent terrorist groups from using Afghanistan soil to launch attacks against Pakistan.

The Taliban’s deputy foreign minister, Mohammad Naeem, meanwhile said talks failed because of “unrealistic demands” from the Pakistani delegation.

The remarks highlight growing distrust between Islamabad and Kabul, as cross-border militant attacks strain relations between the two neighbours.

Analysts say Pakistan’s warnings could signal a shift towards a more aggressive policy if the Taliban fail to curb anti-Pakistan militant groups operating from Afghanistan territory.

FAO Warns Deadly Disease Threatens 21 Million Livestock in Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati

November 11, 2025

The UN’s FAO warns a deadly livestock disease threatens over 21 million sheep and goats in Afghanistan, prompting urgent vaccinations.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has sounded the alarm over the rapid spread of a deadly livestock disease threatening more than 21 million sheep and goats across Afghanistan.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, FAO said the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) virus, known as small ruminant plague — is a highly contagious disease that could devastate rural livelihoods if left unchecked. The organization warned that Afghanistan’s fragile agricultural system is already under strain from drought, loss of pasture, and limited veterinary support.

With assistance from the Asian Development Bank and the United Kingdom, FAO has launched a nationwide vaccination campaign to curb the spread of the virus. The campaign aims to protect herds across all 34 provinces and prevent further economic losses in rural areas dependent on livestock for income and nutrition.

FAO emphasized that the vaccination drive is part of broader efforts to strengthen Afghanistan’s livestock health system and ensure the survival of millions of animals vital to the country’s food supply.

The U.N. agency noted that recurring droughts and shrinking grazing lands have increased the vulnerability of herding communities, leaving many families at risk of losing their only source of livelihood.

FAO called on international donors to maintain their support, warning that without sustained intervention, the livestock sector, one of Afghanistan’s economic lifelines, could face irreversible damage, deepening food insecurity across the country.

Fifth Group of Afghan Evacuees Flies from Pakistan to Germany

By Fidel Rahmati

November 11, 2025

A fifth group of Afghan evacuees left Islamabad for Germany on Tuesday, as Berlin slowly resumes relocation of vulnerable Afghans awaiting transfer.

A group of 11 Afghan citizens departed Islamabad for Germany on Tuesday, becoming the fifth batch of evacuees to leave Pakistan under Berlin’s humanitarian admission program, the German news agency DPA reported.

German authorities said around 1,900 Afghans with approved relocation status are still waiting in Pakistan, many of them stranded for months or even years as bureaucratic delays continue to stall departures. Earlier flights had already transferred several groups of Afghans promised resettlement since the current coalition government took office.

The admission program, designed for vulnerable Afghans including former local employees of German institutions, their relatives, and others at risk from the Taliban, was suspended in May by Germany’s conservative-led coalition. Despite the suspension, several Afghans were later allowed entry following successful court appeals.

In its coalition agreement, the German government pledged to phase out voluntary admission initiatives such as the Afghan relocation scheme and to avoid introducing new programs of similar nature.

Earlier this month, authorities sent letters to some Afghan applicants offering financial compensation in exchange for withdrawing from the resettlement process. The proposal drew strong backlash from recipients who described it as “shameful and absurd” after years of waiting in Pakistan.

One Afghan evacuee told DPA: “We have spent two years in Islamabad hoping for safety, and now they offer us money to give up our future.”

Human rights groups in Germany have condemned the move, saying it contradicts Berlin’s earlier commitment to protect Afghans who supported international missions and now face danger under Taliban rule.

While the latest flight has given hope to a few families, nearly two thousand others remain in Pakistan, waiting for what could be their final chance to rebuild their lives in safety.

Dhaka under tight security ahead of Hasina verdict date, AL ‘lockdown’

Nov 12, 2025

Law enforcement agencies have blanketed Dhaka with tight security today, citing a recent spate of violence, the Awami League's announced "lockdown programme," and an impending court date in a case against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Police checkpoints were set up at major roads and intersections across the capital, while members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) were also seen patrolling key areas.

Amid the heightened security, traffic on Dhaka's roads was visibly lighter than usual today, while the metro rail also saw fewer passengers.

Mohammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told The Daily Star that police personnel have been deployed in front of nearly all major establishments in the city.

The measures come following a spate of recent violence. On Monday and yesterday, at least 17 crude bomb explosions were reported, and nine vehicles were set ablaze in separate incidents across the country.

Today, four buses were set on fire in Gazipur and Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

The Police Headquarters had earlier instructed all stations in Dhaka to intensify patrols and surveillance ahead of AL's programme tomorrow, when the International Crimes Tribunal is expected to set the date for delivering its verdict in a case against Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has issued special security alerts for all airports, instructing enhanced vigilance at terminals and entry points.

‘History of Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques’ forum chronicles Kingdom’s service to pilgrims

SALEH FAREED

November 11, 2025

JEDDAH: The “History of Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques” forum was launched on Monday by the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah).

Highlighting the Kingdom’s efforts in developing and caring for the mosques and the evolution of the Hajj experience over the years, the forum was unveiled during the fifth Hajj Conference and Exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in collaboration with the Pilgrim Experience Program.

The forum is focused on Hajj as a pillar of Islamic identity and a manifestation of unity among Muslims. Through the platform, Darah seeks to use research data to develop accessible cultural and educational content.

Organized as part of a broader project on the history of Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques, it is aligned with the foundation’s mission to preserve and document the history of the Kingdom and its holiest sites.

It aims to be a national and global reference for chronicling the Hajj ritual and promoting the Kingdom’s cultural image, in line with Vision 2030’s culture and tourism objectives.

Prince Faisal bin Salman, special adviser to King Salman and chairman of Darah’s board of directors, stressed the forum’s importance and said the history of Hajj would be documented using a scientific approach, including interactive content.

In his opening speech, Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, said: “The prince plays a prominent role in preserving the national heritage and documenting the features of the historical transformation the Kingdom has witnessed in serving the Hajj and the Two Holy Mosques.

“His Highness has left a clear mark on supporting knowledge and cultural projects that embody the Kingdom’s historical depth and highlight to the world the great efforts exerted by the wise leadership in developing the holy sites to serve the pilgrims.”

Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, secretary-general of the Muslim World League, emphasized the role of modern technologies in documenting and presenting the rich Hajj experience.

The forum will feature more than 10 specialized panel sessions with over 50 speakers, including historians, researchers and specialists in history, architecture, culture, media and digital technologies, documenting the Hajj through a modern and comprehensive lens.

It will also discuss topics such as organizing Hajj and Umrah and serving pilgrims, crowd management, transport, and healthcare, and digital transformation for documentation and guidance.

On the sidelines of the Hajj Conference and Exhibition, which runs at Super Dome Jeddah until Nov. 12, an exhibition titled “Architecture of the Two Holy Mosques and the Holy Sites” highlights the history of Hajj over 100 years through rare original documents, historical photographs, manuscripts, artifacts and tools used by pilgrims, in addition to digital media and modern display technologies.

Anwar warns Malaysians against complacency in safeguarding national unity

12 Nov 2025

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urges vigilance in maintaining Malaysia’s unity and stability, warning against internal discord and political power struggles.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded all parties not to become complacent with the nation’s progress, but to remain vigilant in safeguarding unity and harmony, which form the foundation of Malaysia’s stability.

He said that as a small yet rapidly developing nation that has attracted global attention, Malaysia must preserve its stability, spirit of unity, and good governance to ensure continued growth.

Anwar warned that threats to national peace do not only come from external sources, but may also arise from envy and internal discord among the people.

“On the positive side, Malaysia is now gaining recognition in tourism and investment.

“However, we must stay alert. History shows that no nation can survive once it becomes consumed by complacency and negligence. That is something we must remember,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly here today.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Anwar stressed that Malaysia’s peace and stability should never be taken for granted, as they underpin investor confidence and social wellbeing.

“We (Malaysians) tend to take things for granted. Alhamdulillah, so far we’ve been blessed, but we must continue to preserve our harmony.

“In this context, imagine other countries with diverse racial, religious and regional compositions like Malaysia… they may appear relatively peaceful, but in reality, remain volatile and unstable,” he said.

Anwar noted that maintaining political stability and sound governance are essential for sustaining economic success and public welfare under the MADANI Economy framework.

“… what matters is governance. No matter how much wealth we have, it won’t solve our problems if it isn’t managed properly,” he added.

The prime minister also cautioned political leaders against persistent power struggles, saying such actions only undermine stability and burden the people.

“We have experienced periods of stability, followed by instability that affected the rakyat. When political manoeuvring continues endlessly, leaders become too focused on fighting each other and forget its consequences for the nation,” he said. – Bernama

Federal govt won’t appeal against Sabah’s 40% revenue entitlement ruling

11 Nov 2025

Federal govt accepts Sabah’s constitutional 40% revenue share, will start immediate talks but appeals process flaws

PETALING JAYA: The federal government has decided not to appeal a High Court ruling affirming Sabah’s constitutional entitlement to 40% of revenue collected from the state, the Attorney General’s Chambers announced Tuesday.

The decision was made during a Special Cabinet meeting held on November 11, 2025, following the Kota Kinabalu High Court’s judgment on Sabah’s Special Grant in a judicial review application filed by the Sabah Law Society against the federal government.

The Attorney General’s Chambers confirmed that the federal government respects the principle of the Special Grant based on 40% of revenue as provided under the Federal Constitution.

Consequently, the government will immediately commence negotiations with the Sabah state government.

However, the federal government will appeal certain aspects of the judgment.

The Attorney-General highlighted defects in the court’s reasoning, including allegations that both federal and state governments had abused their powers and violated constitutional obligations dating back to 1974.

The judgment also declared that reviews conducted after 2021 were unlawful, irrational, procedurally irregular, and disproportionate.

As such the federal government will challenge these specific findings while accepting the core 40% revenue principle.

The landmark decision could have significant implications for federal-state fiscal arrangements and Sabah’s autonomy within Malaysia’s federal structure.

Anwar says he’s ‘surprised’ by rumours of Khairy joining Cabinet

By Malay Mail

12 Nov 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed surprise over circulating rumours that former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin could be reappointed to his Cabinet.

Responding to reporters’ questions about Khairy after the National Development Symposium and Awards 2025 in Putrajaya today, the prime minister merely smiled and said: “Really? Who told you?”

According to a report today in Utusan Malaysia, the speculation comes amid expectations of a Cabinet reshuffle slated for early December, following vacancies in several ministerial posts.

Khairy is reportedly tipped to take the role of minister of environment and water, while Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani is expected to head the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Malay Mail previously reported that Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed Khairy had expressed interest in returning to the party, adding that Umno was open to his return and was “waiting for the official letter”.

Khairy, the former Rembau MP, is reportedly seeking to rejoin Umno ahead of the Sabah state election at the end of next month, with the blessing of top party leaders, including president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The former health minister had said last year on his podcast that he had rejected offers to join other parties, insisting he still saw himself as part of Umno.

Malaysia’s security forces rated on par with top US agencies, says Saifuddin Nasution

12 Nov 2025

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 12 — The capability of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in managing security for high-profile international events has been recognised as being on par with leading global security agencies, including those in the United States (US).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was demonstrated during the recent Asean Summit, where PDRM displayed exceptional efficiency and professionalism in handling the presence of high-risk leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

“PDRM has proven its competence to be on par with foreign security agencies. In the context of receiving President Trump, who is categorised as a high-risk delegation, the cooperation between PDRM and the US advance team was very close and effective.

“They (the US security team) placed their trust in us. Although they have their own standard security procedures, PDRM remained the final authority in deciding all security aspects,” he said during an exclusive interview with Bernama led by its Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj here.

He said meticulous preparations began with the development of a detailed checklist and comprehensive discussions with the security forces of participating countries, including the US Secret Service.

“As a result, all PDRM security strategies, including proposed protocol routes, road closure schedules, and the deployment of security assets,  were well received by the US President’s security team, signifying their recognition of PDRM’s expertise,” he said.

Saifuddin Nasution said President Trump himself commended the Malaysian security arrangements, expressing that he felt safe and at ease throughout his stay in Malaysia.

“President Trump personally mentioned three key points, among them that he felt safe and calm during his entire visit due to the capabilities of Malaysia’s security forces.

“This is a very meaningful recognition and should serve as a source of pride for all PDRM members,” he said, adding that the successful organisation of the summit further strengthened Malaysia’s international reputation as a capable host of large-scale events that demand top-tier security management.

The 47th Asean Summit, which concluded on October 29, brought together the top leaders of 10 member countries, as well as dialogue partners, including the US, China, Japan, and India, reaffirming Asean’s role as a key platform for dialogue and cooperation in an increasingly dynamic global environment. — Bernama
