Poster Of The Film ‘The Taj Story’ Shows A Lord Shiva Idol Emerging From The Dome Of The Taj Mahal
September 30, 2025

A major controversy arose after Paresh Rawal shared the motion poster of his upcoming film The Taj Story
-------------
A motion poster for Paresh Rawal’s upcoming film The Taj Story sparked controversy this week after it showed a Lord Shiva idol emerging from the dome of the Taj Mahal. Shared by Paresh Rawal on social media on Monday, the visual quickly ignited backlash online. The post read: “What if everything you’ve been taught is a lie? The truth isn’t just hidden; it’s being judged. Unveil the facts with #TheTajStory, releasing on 31st October in cinemas near you.”
Critics accused the filmmakers of endorsing the disputed theory that the Taj Mahal was built over a Hindu temple, an unverified claim that has long stirred debate. In response to the uproar, Rawal deleted the original post and later shared a statement from the film’s production house.
“The makers of the film The Taj Story clarify that the movie does not deal with any religious matters, nor does it claim that a Shiv temple resides within the Taj Mahal. It focuses solely on historical facts. We would kindly request you to watch the film and form your own opinion. Thank You, Swarnim Global Services Pvt. Ltd,” the statement read.
Paresh Rawal retweeted the statement. However, criticism from netizens continued unabated. One user wrote: “India is going backwards because of this thought process. A temple or a mosque are just religious structures, don’t make it a big deal. Hindus and Muslims should stop these cheap activities. Help India develop and be a superpower; everyone, including your family, will have a future.” Another added: “I’m deeply concerned about the current direction our country is taking. It’s disheartening to see efforts to create division between Hindus and Muslims for the sake of vote bank politics. This isn’t progress — it’s a step backward. #TheTajStory”

‘No Beards’ Policy Announced by Defence Secretary: CAIR Calls on Pentagon to Affirm Religious Rights of Military Personnel
September 30, 2025

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Pentagon to affirm that it will protect the religious rights of all military personnel by maintaining religious accommodations for Sikhs, Muslims, Jews, and others in the wake of a “no beards” policy announced today by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
In his address today to military leaders, Hegseth said “no more beards…we’re going to cut our hair, shave our beards and adhere to standards.”
[NOTE: A directive issued in August on this issue made no mention of a religious exemption, but a similar directive issued in July did.]
In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:
“The First Amendment guarantees military personnel the right to practice their faith – including the right of Muslim, Sikh and Jewish personnel to grow beards or cover their hair – as does established Pentagon policy. We call on the Pentagon to clarify and affirm that it will maintain the religious rights of all men and women in the military.”
In 2020, CAIR expressed support for the U.S. Air Force’s new guidelines allowing personnel to request a waiver to wear religious apparel, including turbans and hijabs (Islamic head scarves), and to grow beards for religious reasons.
In 2014, CAIR welcomed an updated Pentagon policy on religious accommodation for military personnel.

Listen to Muslim teachers, don't loyalty test 'Britishness' in the classroom
30 Sep, 2025

Nadeine Asbali knows teachers whose September training days this year included entire sessions on how to suppress discussion of Palestine in the classroom [photo credit: Getty Images]
-------------
Schools are back for another academic year in the UK, but beneath the homework deadlines, detentions, and canteen lunches bubbles a worrying undercurrent of today’s politics, and it only looks set to worsen.
This summer brought a total explosion of anti-migrant sentiment, with divisive rhetoric around foreigners embedding itself firmly in mainstream political narrative.
Far-right mobs assembled outside hotels housing vulnerable asylum seekers across the country, and just this month, the capital’s streets were flooded with thousands of nationalist protesters chanting anti-migrant, Islamophobic slogans and waving incendiary, racist placards.
As a secondary school teacher, I can’t help but feel alarmed at what this summer’s division and hostility mean for the year ahead. Real life does not stop at the school gates. Politics does not pause for the 3 o’clock bell, and children are caught in its grip.
I’ve lost count of the footage showing children at anti-migration protests, shouting racist remarks or holding offensive signs. And even when they are not present, most adults at these rallies have young people in their lives. That means potentially hundreds of thousands of children across Britain are being exposed to racist rhetoric from someone they love and trust, rhetoric now emboldened and legitimised by a political class peddling the same ideas.
Schools reflect the communities they serve, and many classrooms in major cities are melting pots of young people from every racial, ethnic and religious background.
Young asylum seekers may sit beside children taught that foreigners are the enemy; Black and brown students beside kids who spent the weekend draped in St George’s flags, chanting ‘go home’; Muslim children beside classmates raised in homes where casual Islamophobia is the norm.
It is a scandal, an utter dereliction of duty, to begin the school year without a national agenda to confront this.
Where is the urgent protocol from the Education Secretary? Where is the inquiry into how these children were radicalised into far-right action? Where is the expansion of Prevent, the investigation into the communities consumed by these protests? Instead, there is silence, and any teacher will tell you this amounts to a safeguarding catastrophe on every side.
Black and brown children, once safe at school, now face classrooms that mirror the dangers of the street. White children, radicalised in their homes or communities into far-right beliefs, are abandoned to a culture that dresses fascism up as national pride.
When flag-wielding racists are portrayed by media and politicians as concerned citizens, the children dragged along become young patriots with an admirable love of country rather than vulnerable children radicalised by their parents’ extreme beliefs.
Without a nationwide plan, this is a ticking time bomb and it will be black and brown children, young asylum seekers and refugees who have already endured the unthinkable, who pay the price when classmates can’t distinguish between the non-white peer beside them and the supposed foreign enemy their parents rail against at home, or between slogans acceptable at a protest and those shouted in a maths lesson.
If that weren’t damning enough, the double standards are glaring. When pro-Palestine protests became regular in October 2023, then education secretary Gillian Keegan wrote to schools warning that solidarity for Palestine risked spreading “an atmosphere of intimidation and fear” in classrooms.
She announced over £3 million of extra funding to protect Jewish institutions, with no mention of Muslim ones, despite Islamophobia surging after October 7 and reminded teachers of their statutory duty to refer suspicious behaviour to Prevent.
It was a blatant attempt to smear all Palestine solidarity as antisemitic and extreme, while recruiting teachers to police pro-Palestine sentiment on school grounds. In other words: protesting genocide triggers millions in funding, an expanded counter-terror strategy and urgent nationwide guidance, yet violent nationalism on our streets warrants nothing.
The reason for this double standard is obvious. Advocacy for Palestine challenges the status quo, while white supremacist nationalism upholds it by design. But more than that, schools have long been used by the state to embed its interests in the minds of the next generation. As a teacher of eight years, I’ve seen this troubling trend take shape in many ways now coming to a head as far-right ideas resurface among the young, particularly men.
A decade ago, Prevent became a binding obligation on public workers like doctors, social workers and teachers. My colleagues and I are legally required to refer pupils to counter-terror police if they show a wide range of vague, arbitrary “symptoms”, from questioning foreign policy to seeming withdrawn or tired.
At the same time, “British Values” became a mandated part of the curriculum, tied directly to Prevent. This places us in a contradictory bind: we must teach democracy and freedom of expression while spying on students who show solidarity with anything the state deems threatening — Muslim identity, or Palestine itself.
Though Prevent remains a duty across sectors like healthcare, it is most deeply embedded in schools; 40% of referrals last year came through education. I’d argue this is by design.
After nearly a decade of engaging with it as a teacher, sitting through mandatory training year after year, it feels deliberately positioned to catch young people at their most vulnerable and criminalise normal markers of adolescence as extreme, un-British or illegal. The goal is clear: to manufacture citizens who are compliant, malleable, and loyal only to the British state and Western liberal values.
Palestine, the great moral question of our time, exposes the hypocrisies of our system. The stark double standard between protests against genocide and protests against foreigners shows how Prevent has always been about manufacturing consent for liberalism’s bloody legacy in a new generation. Students have been questioned by counter-terror police for wearing pin badges and excluded for asking to raise money for Gaza.
Media hysteria erupted over children missing lessons to attend protests, most of which took place on weekends, dragging even petty truancy into counter-terrorism if you happen to be Muslim. I know of teachers whose September training days this year included entire sessions on how to suppress any discussion of Palestine in the classroom.
Many individual teachers do try to instil moral justice in their pupils, but even the best efforts of overworked, underpaid staff cannot undo the system’s sinister warping for the state’s ends.
This school year begins in a climate more hostile than ever for ethnic minorities, especially Muslims, and advocacy for Palestine more criminalised than ever before. Children are not separate from this climate; they are shaped by it: spied on, silenced, and left to battle the nation’s divisions on the playground.

Hamas: Calls To Storm Al-Aqsa Mosque On Sukkot Intensification Of Religious War, Judaisation
30 Sep 2025

Harun Nasser al-Din, a member of the Political Bureau and head of the Jerusalem Affairs Office of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), stressed that the calls issued by the so-called "Temple Groups" for a large-scale and dangerous storming of the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque during the so-called Jewish Sukkot holiday represent an intensification of the religious war waged by the enemy against al-Aqsa.
Nasser al-Din added the enemy continued attempts to consolidate the project of Judaization, temporal and spatial division, and the imposition of Talmudic rituals in the mosque's courtyards.
Nasser al-Din explained on Tuesday that these announcements and calls reveal the extent of the extremism, hatred, and deceit that the settlers are plotting against al-Aqsa Mosque and the city of Jerusalem.
They also reflect the arrogance practiced by the extremist enemy government sponsoring these incursions.
The Hamas leader pointed out that the past Hebrew year witnessed the storming of al-Aqsa Mosque compound by more than 58,000 settlers. These are unprecedented numbers that confirm the extent of the escalation and the settler groups' efforts to achieve new records during their holidays, imposing a permanent Judaization reality.
Nasser al-Din emphasized that the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque is a purely Islamic right, and that no attempt to obliterate its identity or alter its features will succeed. He held the enemy fully responsible for the consequences of these policies and attacks, and the potential popular anger and escalation of resistance attacks.
Hamas Political Bureau member called on the Palestinian people in Jerusalem, the occupied territories, and all areas of contact to mobilize and maintain a widespread presence in al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
He also called on the Arab and Islamic nations to mobilize in support of al-Aqsa and to reject the Zionist aggression against the land, the people, and the holy sites.

Pakistan’s ambassador hails defense pact as ‘natural continuation’ of Saudi ties
LAMA ALHAMAWI
September 30, 2025

Pakistan’s Ambassador, Ahmad Farooq
-------------
RIYADH: Pakistan’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia has hailed his country’s close security ties with Saudi Arabia.
The Kingdom and Pakistan signed a landmark defense pact last month in Riyadh during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s state visit to Saudi Arabia.
And Ahmad Farooq, Pakistan’s ambassador to the Kingdom, told Arab News: “Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share longstanding and historic brotherly ties, rooted in our shared faith, common culture, and deep people-to-people connections.
“The signing of the Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement is a natural continuation of this enduring fraternal bond. It reflects our shared commitment to enhancing security, promoting peace in the region and beyond, and developing closer defense cooperation.
“Importantly, it also strengthens our joint capacity for deterrence against any aggression.”
The two nations have vowed to protect each other’s sovereignty, and added that “aggression against one country would be treated as an attack on both.”
Farooq said: “The Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement further formalizes the decades-old, robust defense partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. It will contribute to regional peace, security, and long-term stability.”
The agreement builds on the partnership between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and is based on the bonds of brotherhood and Islamic solidarity, as well as shared strategic interests and close defense cooperation between the two countries.
The Kingdom Tower, a prominent landmark in Riyadh, was illuminated with the flags of both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan following the signing of the defense agreement.
Asked about how the agreement would affect economic development between the two countries, the ambassador said: “Economic cooperation … remains dynamic and is continuing on a positive trajectory. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia enjoy a long and distinguished history of brotherhood and cooperation.”
He added: “The bilateral relations are unique, enduring, and multifaceted. The leadership of the two countries shares a common vision to take it to new heights. The relationship lives in the hearts of the people of the two countries. The positive trajectory in defense cooperation is a continuation of a decades-old defense partnership.”
The relationship between the countries, which was established in 1947, has evolved into a comprehensive partnership spanning diplomatic, economic, and military spheres.
The foundation of this bond was laid in September 1947, when Saudi Arabia became one of the first countries to recognize Pakistan following its independence. This recognition was quickly followed by the signing of a Treaty of Friendship in 1951, which formally cemented bilateral ties.
The two nations have engaged in frequent high-level diplomatic exchanges ever since. The first of these state-level visits occurred in 1953 when Ghulam Muhammad, Pakistan’s governor general, traveled to Saudi Arabia.
King Saud reciprocated with a visit to Karachi in 1954 to inaugurate a housing project.
The economic and social dimensions of the relationship deepened significantly from the 1970s to the 1980s, a period that saw a substantial migration of Pakistani workers to the Kingdom.
Individuals, including engineers, doctors, and laborers, contributed to Saudi Arabia’s modernization efforts. It is estimated that the Kingdom is home to over 2 million Pakistanis, who have played a critical role in the development of the country’s infrastructure.

Child Marriage: Members Of Mosque Committee Booked In Bengaluru
October 01, 2025
The city police have registered a case against the head of a mosque, among others, for allegedly solemnising the marriage of a 16-year-old girl in Anepalya a few days ago. They have been booked under the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929.
The incident came to light when a city-based advocate, Hussain Owais S., tipped off about the marriage of a 16-year-old girl to a 20-year-old boy, lodged a complaint with the State and city police chiefs and the Child Welfare Committee, seeking immediate action. However, despite this, it was four days before the Cubbon Park police registered the case, sources said. The advocate has pointed out that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had recently directed all officials in the State to take stringent measures against child marriages.
Sources said the minor girl was allegedly in a relationship with the 20-year-old boy, and their parents recently found out about them. Following this, their marriage was solemnised at a mosque, sources said.
Tipped off by Mr. Owais, Pundalik, a member of the District Child Helpline, sent a team to inquire about the case at the Neelasandra mosque. However, the mosque head refused to provide them with details and said that the marriage procedure was completed as per the customs of the Muslim community.
“Based on the complaint we received and review of the photographic and video evidence available, the girl is said to be a minor and marriage is liable for prosecution,” Pundalik said in his complaint.
Mr. Owais, speaking to The Hindu, alleged that the police have delayed taking action to ensure the safety of the victim. He alleged that despite giving details of the accused, their names do not figure in the FIR, to get a copy of which he had to approach the court.
He further requested the police to rescue the girl and subject her to medical examination as she is suspected to be pregnant.

Bareilly clashes: Muslim cleric’s aide shot in leg during alleged gunfight, 17 more arrested
Scroll Staff
October 01, 2025
The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly on Tuesday shot the district president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council in the leg after he allegedly fired at them when a team had gone to arrest him in connection with clashes linked to the “I love Muhammad” posters row that broke out after Friday prayers, reported The Indian Express.
The Ittehad-e-Millat Council is a regional party in Uttar Pradesh led by local Muslim cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan, who was arrested on Saturday and sent to 14-day judicial custody.
The violence had broken out when a crowd carrying “I love Muhammad” posters clashed with police outside a mosque in the Kotwali area.
The unrest reportedly followed the last-minute cancellation of a protest called by Raza in support of the campaign. He said authorities had denied him permission for the demonstration.
Police alleged that Raza delivered speeches that provoked the crowd.
On Tuesday, when the police went to arrest Tazim, the district president of the party, he allegedly opened fire with a country-made pistol, Bareilly Additional Superintendent of Police Manush Pareek was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
This led to the police firing back, claimed Pareek.
Besides Tazim, 17 more persons have been arrested in the case, taking the total number of arrests since September 26 to 73, according to The Indian Express.
The arrested individuals fall into two categories – those allegedly involved in planning the violence and those accused of attacking police after Friday prayers, Pareek told the newspaper.
‘Bulldozer action’ in Bareilly
Since Raza’s arrest, authorities in Bareilly have sealed and demolished several properties linked to his associates.
Officials from the Bareilly Development Authority, the municipal corporation and the police have demolished structures that they claim were built illegally in Faiq Enclave, Jagatpur and parts of the old city, PTI reported.
A marriage hall in the Nariyawal locality belonging to Haji Sharafat Khan, a close aide of Raza, was sealed after he allegedly provided refuge to some of the accused in the violence, reported The Indian Express.
Officials said that nearly 74 shops at Novelty Chauhara, as well as around 35 shops in Kotwali, were also sealed for alleged encroachment.
“Illegal constructions on government and ceiling land will not be spared,” PTI quoted Bareilly Development Authority vice-chairperson Manikandan A as saying. “Strict action will be taken as per rules.”
JPS Rathore, Uttar Pradesh’s minister in-charge for Bareilly, said the government would not tolerate “any kind of anarchy, illegal occupation or map tampering” and warned that bulldozers would be used where necessary, The Indian Express reported.
In November, the Supreme Court held as illegal the practice of demolishing properties of persons accused of crimes as a punitive measure. It said that processes must be followed before removing allegedly illegal encroachments.
There are no provisions in Indian law that allow for the demolition of property as a punitive action.
Row over ‘I love Muhammad’ banners
The row began on September 4, when a group of Muslims held an “I love Muhammad” banner during an Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Hindu groups objected to the banner, claiming that a “new tradition” was being introduced at the procession.
The police claimed that government rules prohibit introducing new customs into religious processions. On September 9, the police went on to file cases against 24 persons, of whom 15 were unidentified, for allegedly introducing a new custom during the procession and disturbing communal harmony.
However, the police action sparked protests and processions with “I love Muhammad” banners in other districts of Uttar Pradesh and other states. Some of the protests led to clashes with the police, leading to cases being filed.

U.P. Police initiate demolition action against properties linked to Bareilly cleric’s aide
October 01, 2025
MAYANK KUMAR
Bareilly police arrested Maulana Mohsin Raza, son-in-law of Islamic cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s elder brother Mannani Miya, on Tuesday (September 30, 2025) and initiated demolition action against properties linked to him for violent protests on September 26. District officials targeted illegal structures linked to Mohsin Raza, including a garage built on encroached land above a drainage system. Officials also sealed a marriage lawn owned by Haji Sharafat Khan, another aide of the Islamic cleric.
“16 rioters who had attacked the police party in Bareilly on 26.09.2025 with gunfire, bricks, stones, and bottles of acid were arrested,” according to Anurag Arya, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bareilly.
Brickbats recovered
The SSP added that a large number of stones, broken police barricades, blades, hollow cartridges, and sticks have been recovered from different locations. “We are analysing the CCTV footage and videos,” said the SSP.
Authorities are maintaining a strict vigil to prevent any untoward incident. Security has been tightened across the town and neighbouring areas as a precautionary measure, with police conducting flag marches on Tuesday. In some areas, drones are monitoring the situation. The flag marches were conducted by personnel of local police stations and the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).
The violence on September 26 began after Islamic cleric and Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief, Tauqeer Raza Khan announced protests over the alleged use of derogatory language against the Prophet in different parts of the country, including Shahjahanpur, and after the controversy over “I Love Muhammad” posters during a Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession in Kanpur. The poster resulted in Kanpur police registering cases against 24 people, amid objections from right-wing Hindu groups over a “deviation from tradition.”

Ala Hazrat family decries 'police excesses' in Bareilly, demands a stop on arrests of Muslims
01 Oct 2025
BAREILLY: The influential Ala Hazrat family on Wednesday decried the police crackdown against "Muslims" here following the arrest of Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) national president Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, a member of the clan.
The family alleged that "innocent Muslims" were being targeted and subjected to collective punishment.
In a statement released by Tauqeer Raza's elder brother, Maulana Tauseef Raza Khan, accused the police of filing false cases and arresting people on fabricated charges of attack on security forces with firearms, petrol bombs, and acid bottles.
He warned the administration that if "atrocities" on Muslims do not stop, the family would be compelled to take "concrete steps."
The family alleged that the police raided mosques, harassed imams and worshippers, and even prevented people from offering namaz in some places.
"This is a blatant violation of the constitutional right of Muslims to freely practice their religion," Tauseef Raza said.
The family also claimed that police brutality had created unease not only in Bareilly Sharif but among "millions of Sunni Muslims across India and abroad."
It demanded an immediate halt to the arrests of Muslims, withdrawal of "false cases," an end to bulldozer actions against their homes and alleged police excesses.
The family alleged that many detainees were paraded before the media in an injured state, they were denied food and water in custody, and that even women and children were not spared the police excess.
It cited a video shot purportedly near Indira Market and widely circulated on the internet, to claim that some miscreants had pelted stones both at police and Muslims with the intention of disturbing peace, but no action was taken against them.
The Ala Hazrat family maintained that had Tauqeer Raza been allowed to submit his memorandum peacefully, the situation would not have escalated, but his arrest triggered unrest.
Police are yet to respond to the allegations made in the statement.

Will resign rather than ally with BJP for statehood restoration: Omar Abdullah
Fayaz Wani
01 Oct 2025
SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday asserted that he would resign rather than aligning with BJP for the restoration of state status to Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
“After last year’s elections, we had an option to align with BJP (which was experimented in 2015). Had I wanted, I would have included BJP in the government the way late Mufti Sayeed did in 2015 and Mehbooba Mufti did in 2016. Then also, the government could have been formed without BJP as Congress and NC were ready to support PDP to keep BJP away from the government.
They aligned with BJP on the pretext of giving Jammu a representation”. Abdullah said in his government without BJP’s inclusion,
“We have given representation to Jammu. We gave representation to Pir Panjal and the Dy CM is from Jammu without the inclusion of BJP”.
The CM said had the BJP been included in the government, “they would have immediately restored our statehood as a gift”.
Asserting that he is not ready to align with the saffron party, the CM said, “I am not ready to make any such deal. If including BJP in government is a must for getting statehood back, then I am ready to resign and let anybody else be elected as CM because I am not ready for it”. “If I have to wait for restoration of statehood, I will do it but won’t align with BJP,” Omar said.
Ruling out an agitational path for restoration of statehood, the CM said, “Those who tell me why you don’t come out on roads to protest for restoration of statehood should see Ladakh’s situation”.
“How much blood of youth do you want to see being spilled? I am not ready for that. We will fight but democratically and peacefully. We will achieve our rights within the scope of the constitution and law but I am not ready to destroy people’s homes,” Abdullah added.

Acknowledging India’s stance on the Gaza peace plan mooted by United States (US) President Donald Trump, Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar said Tuesday that it reflects shared values of peace, development, and the fight against terrorism and radicalism. He also emphasised that India’s expertise, particularly in infrastructure, could make it a key partner in the region’s reconstruction.
On Monday, Trump unveiled a 20-point peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The plan requires Hamas to return all hostages, whether they are alive or deceased, within 72 hours of a ceasefire. The proposal also stipulates that Hamas should be excluded from any future governing roles in Palestine. The details of this plan were shared during a meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Trump’s proposal, describing it as a step towards stability in the region. In a post on X, he wrote, “We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region.”
Azar noted that the plan has wide international support. During a media briefing in New Delhi Tuesday, Azar described the development as “historic”.
“What we saw yesterday in the White House was a presentation of a comprehensive plan to end the war in Gaza, but also a vision, a vision for the future,” he added.
“It has the backing of Arab countries that praised President Trump for the plan. It has the backing of Muslim countries. It has international backing. It has the backing of Prime Minister Modi, who just tweeted about his support. We are very thankful to Prime Minister Modi for his support of the plan,” he said. “We hope more and more countries can join us.”
Outlining the preconditions for Palestinian self-rule under the proposed framework, Azar emphasised governance and the rule of law as critical elements for the way forward.
Enumerating the steps ahead, the Israeli envoy said once hostages are released, Israel would withdraw to the yellow line until it secures the designated security perimeter.
He also highlighted the constructive role of regional stakeholders, stating, “There is a sound Egyptian and Qatari position and a larger Arab consensus on Hamas. There is a chance that Hamas can accept it now.”
He also expressed hope that economic cooperation could follow. “We can share the economic success of Israel with Palestine. We are hoping for a timeline for Hamas to release hostages,” he said, noting that the timeframe is set at 72 hours.
India’s role in reconstruction of Gaza
Azar also noted that India’s expertise, particularly in infrastructure, could make it a key partner in the region’s reconstruction. He said Israel will be issuing tenders worth more than $200 billion over the next 10 years, with Indian companies invited to participate. He noted that Gaza’s rebuilding will require immense capabilities, and said India could contribute significantly towards shaping a peaceful and stable future for the region.
“India has a lot to offer both in terms of friendship with the Palestinians and assistance in economic projects. It can be construction. It can be other elements,” he said, adding that the “the speedy response by PM Modi is a testament of how we want to create a situation in which we not only achieve security but also prosperity”.
“If this plan gets implemented, a lot of opportunities are going to be presented and India will be able to engage directly, both with the Americans, with Tony Blair, with other international players, international organisations, in seeing how they can be part of this,” he said. Former British Prime Minister Blair is set to become a key figure on a new body that will oversee the reconstruction and transitional governance of Gaza.
Earlier in the day, Qatar, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt welcomed the US proposal to end the Gaza conflict. However, Azar added that it was now up to Hamas (to agree to the peace plan). If they don’t, Israel will have to continue its military action, he added.

Placed under house arrest ahead of visit to violence-hit Bareilly: Congress MP Imran Masood
by Neetika Jha
October 1, 2025
Congress MP from Saharanpur, Imran Masood, claimed he has been placed under house arrest ahead of his visit to violence-hit Bareilly on Wednesday. Saharanpur police denied this and said they have deployed personnel around the MP’s house and that of Samajwadi Party MLC Shahnawaz Khan after receiving inputs of law and order issues.
According to Masood, he was heading to Bareilly to meet the Bareilly DIG and assess the situation on the ground following last week’s violence. “I had received numerous requests from the people in Bareilly,” he said.
Masood claimed, “On behalf of the party, Shahnawaz and I were to travel by train to Bareilly and planned to return within two hours. Yet, we were stopped with the excuse that the situation was ‘not good.’ How is it not good? We are peacemakers, we can calm the situation, not inflame it. People are being assaulted merely for showing posters… The truth is, the BJP is hiding its failures behind the smokescreen of communal hatred. They fear losing the 2027 elections.”
Saharanpur (City) Superintendent of Police, Vyom Bindal, said forces were deployed outside the MP and MLC’s houses after reports of law and order issues were received from the Local Intelligence Unit. “We have not put him under house arrest but have just deployed our forces,” said Bindal.
The Congress MP’s visit comes in the wake of violent protests in Bareilly, which erupted after Friday prayers on September 26.
Police had stopped people carrying ‘I Love Muhammad’ placards from assembling and used force to disperse them when some in the crowd allegedly hurled stones and raised slogans. Police had said some protesters also opened fire.
The protest was allegedly called by Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) president Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. Tauqeer and 72 others have been arrested.
Masood also criticised Tauqeer, saying, “I strongly oppose political announcements being made from mosque loudspeakers. A mosque is a place of worship, not a platform to advance political agendas.”
He also alleged, “When in Muzaffarnagar, people destroyed eateries no action was taken… similar things happened in Fathepur. This is very selective. I had been getting calls that innocent people were being framed.”
Meanwhile, Tauqeer’s brother, Tauseef Raza, held a press conference on Tuesday night, stating that they have appealed to the administration that innocent people who were arrested should be released. “We have requested them to stop demolishing houses,” he said.
On Tuesday, local authorities had launched sealing and demolition drives against associates Tauqeer, who has been accused of “masterminding” the violence.
Security remains tight in Bareilly and other sensitive parts of the state. Flag marches were conducted, and police presence has been ramped up at religious sites and public spaces. The administration is also monitoring posts on social media and has announced fresh curbs on public gatherings under Section 163 of the BNSS.

Nigel Farage or Reform voters aren't Racist, Says UK PM - As He's Challenged Over Trump's 'Sharia Law' Comment
1 October 2025
Sir Keir Starmer has said he does not believe Nigel Farage or Reform voters are racist - and also refused to label Donald Trump's claim that London wants "Sharia law" as such.
The prime minister told Sky News political editor Beth Rigby the president's claim - made while criticising the capital's mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, during a UN summit last week - was "nonsense".
Asked if it was racist, considering Sir Sadiq is a Muslim, Sir Keir said: "I have been really clear that the idea that in London we're introducing Sharia law is rubbish."
He said the mayor - who has branded Mr Trump "racist, sexist, misogynistic" - was doing a "very good job", but also pointed to his "very good relationship" with the president.
Sir Keir also insisted he does not think Mr Farage or Reform supporters are racist, after targeting the party in his Labour conference speech and claiming its leader "hates Britain".
Earlier in the week, Sir Keir called Reform's freshly announced immigration policies "racist" and "immoral".
Asked if he thinks Mr Farage is a racist, he said: "No, nor do I think Reform voters are racist.
"They're concerned about things like our borders, they're frustrated about the pace of change.
"So I'm not for a moment suggesting that they are racist."
He said he was "talking about a particular policy", which would see Reform axe the right of migrants to apply for indefinite leave to remain, ban anyone who is not a UK citizen from claiming benefits, and force those applying for UK citizenship to renounce other citizenship.
Reform 'taking country down road of toxic division'
Sir Keir also refused to say whether he thinks Mr Farage is dangerous, saying: "I think the fight at the next election is going to define us as a country for years to come.
"I think it's a dangerous moment for the country."
He said he would not "get into labelling the man".
"I'm talking about the ideas and what he stands for and what I stand for," he added.
"I think that taking our country down the road of toxic division where you don't want to fix problems because if they're fixed, you lose your reason to exist, I think that is dangerous for our country."
Farage: Starmer unfit to be PM
Mr Farage reacted to Sir Keir's speech by accusing him of being "unfit to be the prime minister of our country".
"I used to think the prime minister was a decent man, somebody that I could talk to and chat to," he said.
"We might disagree on our worldview, but I thought he was a profoundly decent human being. I am completely shocked at his behaviour.
"I hope when he wakes up tomorrow morning he feels ashamed of what he has done. This is a desperate last throw of the dice for the prime minister who's in deep trouble, a prime minister who can't even command the support of half of his own party.
"But I'm sorry to say, I now believe he is unfit to be the prime minister of our country."

CAIR Welcomes Ruling that Trump Admin Violated Rights of Pro-Palestinian, Anti-Genocide Students
September 30, 2025
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a ruling by a federal judge that government officials unconstitutionally violated the free speech rights of pro-Palestinian students as they sought to deport international students and scholars, including Mahmoud Khalil and Tufts University’s Rumeysa Ozturk, for expressing pro-Palestinian, anti-genocide views.
U.S. District Court Judge William Young wrote in his ruling in a case filed by the American Association of University Professors and the Middle East Studies Association: “This Court finds by clear and convincing evidence that the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, together with the subordinate officials and, agents of each of them, deliberately and with purposeful aforethought, did so concert their actions and those of their two departments intentionally to chill the rights to freedom of speech and peacefully to assemble of the non-citizen plaintiff members of the plaintiff associations.”
In a statement, CAIR Senior Litigation Attorney Gadeir Abbas, Esq., said:
“This ruling is a historic affirmation of the constitutional rights of all people in America — citizens and non-citizens alike — to speak out against injustice without fear of government retaliation. The Trump administration’s deliberate targeting of pro-Palestinian voices, including international students, represents a disturbing abuse of power. We thank Judge Young for upholding the rule of law and reaffirming that free speech is not contingent on political convenience or immigration status.”
The Washington, D.C., based Muslim civil rights organization is calling on current federal leadership to ensure such abuses are not repeated and to protect the rights of individuals peacefully advocating for human rights and justice.

CAIR Submits Statement for the Record at Senate Hearing on TSA’s Quiet Skies Program, Urges Greater Congressional Oversight of Federal Watchlists
September 30, 2025
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced that it has submitted a formal statement for the record in connection with today’s U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing titled “Examining the Weaponization of the Quiet Skies Program.”
In its written statement, CAIR applauded the committee for holding the hearing and for recognizing that the Transportation Security Administration’s “Quiet Skies” program, shut down earlier this year, was a costly and discriminatory failure that operated without statutory authority. CAIR emphasized that the program was an outgrowth of the broader federal terrorism watchlist system, which continues to impose unconstitutional harms on American Muslims and other minority communities.
CAIR’s submission urged Congress to exert greater oversight and authority over the watchlist enterprise, which was created administratively after 9/11 and has never been authorized by statute. The statement calls on lawmakers to press the executive branch to dismantle unconstitutional programs like the Terrorism Screening Dataset and No Fly List, and to reject efforts to codify the watchlist into law.
CAIR also congratulated Abed Ayoub, National Executive Director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), for his powerful testimony before the committee, which highlighted the lived experiences of those directly impacted by discriminatory surveillance and watchlist programs.
In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Department Director Robert S. McCaw, who authored CAIR’s comments, said:
“The end of Quiet Skies was long overdue, but it should be seen as the beginning, not the end, of meaningful reform. Quiet Skies was just one branch of a sprawling watchlist system that has operated in secret, without congressional authorization, and with devastating consequences for countless innocent Americans.
“CAIR also welcomed Chairman Rand Paul’s continued acknowledgment during the hearing of the serious constitutional impacts that surveillance programs like Quiet Skies, and the broader federal watchlist system it grew out of, have had on the rights of Arab and Muslim Americans, as well as other targeted communities.
“Congress must now step in to demand transparency, restore due process, and dismantle the broader unconstitutional watchlist architecture so that no community is treated as a permanent suspect class in its own country.”
CAIR has long documented the discriminatory impact of federal watchlist programs. In its 2023 report Twenty Years Too Many, CAIR revealed that more than 98 percent of the names in the FBI’s 2019 Terrorism Screening Dataset were Muslim. CAIR also successfully litigated Fikre v. FBI before the U.S. Supreme Court, which unanimously held in 2023 that the government cannot evade judicial scrutiny of its No Fly List practices.
Read CAIR’s Report: Twenty Years Too Many
CAIR’s statement for the record urges Congress to:
Affirm that the federal watchlist was never authorized by Congress and should not be codified into law.
Press the executive branch to dismantle unconstitutional watchlist programs.
Guarantee meaningful due process for those placed on government lists.
Prohibit reliance on religion, nationality, ethnicity, or protected speech in security determinations.
Defund discriminatory initiatives such as TSA’s Silent Partner and DHS’s CP3 program.

Trump peace plan 'ignores interests of Palestinian people', Hamas official tells BBC
Oct 01, 2025
Rushdi Abualouf
A senior Hamas figure has told the BBC that the group is likely to reject Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, saying it "serves Israel's interests" and "ignores those of the Palestinian people".
The figure said that Hamas is unlikely to agree to disarming and handing over their weapons - a key condition of Trump's plan.
Hamas is also said to object to the deployment of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in Gaza, which it views as a new form of occupation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted Trump's plan during White House talks on Monday. Hamas has not yet given an official response.
Qatar's foreign ministry has said Hamas is studying the White House proposal "responsibly".
A senior Palestinian official with knowledge of Hamas talks told the BBC they involve the group's leadership both inside and outside of Gaza.
The group's military commander in the territory, Ez al-Din al-Haddad, is thought to be determined to keep fighting rather than accept the plan on offer. Hamas figures outside Gaza have recently found themselves sidelined in discussions as they do not have direct control over the hostages.
Hamas talks, which are expected to take several days, also include other Palestinian factions.
The armed group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), which took part in the 7 October attack and previously held some Israeli hostages, rejected the plan on Tuesday.
For Hamas, a key sticking point is thought to be that the plan requires them to hand over all of the hostages in one go - giving away their only bargaining chip.
Even with Donald Trump's backing for the plan, there is a lack of trust that Israel will not resume its military operations once it has received the hostages - particularly after it attempted to assassinate Hamas leadership in Doha earlier this month, in defiance of the US.
Additionally, a map of Gaza shared by the Trump administration shows what appears to be a planned buffer zone along Gaza's southern border with Egypt. It is unclear how this would be administered, but if Israel is involved it is also likely to be a point of contention.
Further, since agreeing to the plan on Monday evening, Netanyahu has appeared to push back on several of the terms it outlines.
In a video shared on X, he insists that the Israeli military would be able to remain in parts of Gaza and that Israel said it would "forcibly resist" a Palestinian state.
This goes against the terms of Trump's framework, which stipulates complete withdrawal of Israeli forces and says that once the plan is complete there may be a "credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood".
Within Gaza, Palestinians were broadly supportive of the plan, but only because it would lead to an end to the war.
Resident Khadar Abu Kweik told the BBC: "The American plan has bad clauses, but I support it because it will stop the war and get rid of Hamas. Even if the devil himself brought a plan to end this hell we are living in, I would support it."
Palestinian journalist Fathi Sabah said: "A Hamas rejection, god forbid, would mean giving Netanyahu a green light to continue the war with American and Western backing, to destroy what remains of Gaza and the central region."
"The people of Gaza cannot bear that. They are devastated, exhausted, desperate and hopeless," he said.
"They want a ceasefire now, not tomorrow, at any cost, even though they know the plan serves Netanyahu's interests, is full of pitfalls, and does not reflect their aspirations," he added.
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 66,097 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.
In August, a UN-backed body confirmed that famine was taking place in Gaza City. Earlier this month, a UN commission of inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza - which Israel strongly rejects.

Bowen: Momentum is the strength of Trump's Gaza plan, but lack of detail is its weakness
Oct 01, 2025
Jeremy Bowen
Donald Trump's framework agreement for ending the Gaza war and reconstructing the devastated territory has momentum behind it.
Much of it comes from the president himself. Momentum comes too from leading Arab and Islamic countries who have supported the plan, including Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, Indonesia and Turkey. And Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, standing next to Donald Trump, accepted it too, despite the fact it contains talk of a pathway to a Palestinian state that he has repeatedly denounced.
To keep the pace up, Trump says that Hamas has "three to four days" to decide whether to say yes or no.
If the answer is no, the war goes on.
The proposed deal looks a lot like a plan put forward by Joe Biden well over a year ago. Since then there has been massive killing of Palestinian civilians, more destruction in Gaza, and now a famine, while Israeli hostages in Gaza have had to endure months more of agony and captivity.
There were many reports in the Israeli media that the Biden initiative failed because Netanyahu moved the goalposts with a new set of demands - under pressure from the hard right in his cabinet.
Even so, the framework plan is a significant moment. For the first time, Donald Trump is putting pressure on Israel to end the war. Donald Trump has made himself into a leader to whom it is hard to say no. Nobody wants to end up getting the roasting Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky received in the Oval Office back in February. But things can change when leaders leave the White House.
Before Benjamin Netanyahu left Washington DC to go back to Israel his staff filmed him putting over his version of events. One element was the idea of an independent Palestine next to Israel, the two-state solution which the UK and other Western countries have tried to revive by recognising Palestine.
The Trump document gives an indeterminate nod to the idea of Palestinian independence. It says that after the reform of the Palestinian Authority, which is based in Ramallah and led by President Mahmoud Abbas, conditions "may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognise as the aspiration of the Palestinian people."
Even the thought of a distant prospect of a Palestinian state was too much for Netanyahu, who had given whole-hearted support to Trump at the White House, telling him in English "I support your plan to end the war in Gaza, which achieves our war aims."
On the video, getting his message out in Hebrew to the people back home before the long flight home, Netanyahu is asked if he agreed to a Palestinian state. He was emphatic.
"No, absolutely not. It's not even written in the agreement. But we did say one thing. That we would forcibly resist a Palestinian state." Trump, he said, agreed.
Momentum is the plan's strength. Its weakness is the lack of detail, a characteristic of Trumpian diplomacy. The document that Trump and Netanyahu endorsed, which also has the support of the UK and other European countries, comes with a rough map of stages of an IDF pull-back, but none of the nuts and bolts that determine whether diplomatic agreements designed to end a war hold together or disintegrate.
If it is to work, hard negotiation will be necessary. In that process there will be many opportunities for it to break down.
Mainstream opposition parties in Israel have endorsed the plan. It has been condemned by the extremist ultra-nationalists in the Netanyahu coalition, who had loved the "Trump Riviera" plan mooted at the start of the year, launched with a bizarre video showing the leaders of Israel and the US in beach gear sipping cocktails to the backdrop of a new Gazan cityscape glittering glass towers. The Israeli hard right were delighted that the Riviera plan included the removal of all of Gaza's more than two million Palestinians. Jewish extremists want the land annexed and Palestinians replaced with Jewish settlers.
But the new plan says no Palestinian will be forced to leave. Benjamin Netanyahu's key far right ally, Itamar Ben Gvir, is said to have called the proposal "dangerous" and "full of holes".
If Hamas accepts the agreement, and if Benjamin Netanyahu wants to find ways to placate the extremists who keep his coalition in power, he will have plenty of chances to sabotage the negotiations in ways that put the blame on Hamas. The structure of the Trump framework agreement allows Israel a range of opportunities to veto moves it does not like.
It may not be possible to end a deep-seated conflict that has lasted more than a century. Longer term, the UK and many countries outside Israel and the US believe that any attempted solution that does not lead to Palestinian independence will not bring peace.
When the foreign ministers of the Arab and Islamic countries issued their statement of support, they said that they believed it would lead to a full Israeli withdrawal and rebuilding of Gaza, and "a path for just peace on basis of two-state solution under which Gaza is fully integrated with the West Bank in Palestinian state in accordance with international law." That could be taken as a coded reference to the decision of the International Court of Justice that the occupation of Palestinian land by Israel is illegal.
Netanyahu believes the deal takes him closer to Israel's elusive victory over Hamas. He denies any Palestinian right to the land between the river Jordan and the sea.
One plan, two very different versions of what it means. The framework is ambiguous enough for both interpretations to be possible. That is not a promising start.

11 arrested for allegedly placing pigs’ heads outside French mosques and other crimes of racial hatred
30 September 2025
Serbia this week arrested 11 people suspected of spreading racial hatred in European countries on the instructions from a foreign intelligence service, including placing pig heads outside Muslim religious sites in Paris, officials said.
Serbian police said in a statement Monday that the group was detained over incidents in France and Germany that took place between April and September. A suspected organizer, who Serbian police said acted on instructions from an unidentified foreign security agency, remains at large.
The police statement did not specify the foreign agency. French authorities characterized the depositing of pig heads near Paris-area mosques earlier this month as an attempted foreign interference effort, demonstrating “a manifest desire to provoke trouble in the heart of the nation.”
French authorities did not name any country but the incident bore possible hallmarks of previous suspected Russian-linked acts of attempted destabilization that have targeted France and other allies of Ukraine.
Mapping by The Associated Press of alleged disruption efforts by Russia and its proxies has documented dozens of attacks and other incidents across Europe, with France and Germany — another key ally of Ukraine — among the principal targets.
The Serbian police said the suspects were detained in Belgrade and another town. The terse statement said the alleged instructor, who was not named, had organized and trained the group to help incite hatred, discrimination and violence in both Germany and France.
Serbia’s autocratic President Aleksandar Vucic has maintained close relations with Russia while Serbia remains the only country in Europe that has not imposed sanctions on Moscow over the war in Ukraine, even as Belgrade formally seeks European Union membership.
Just days ago, Serbia arrested two suspects over alleged training of more than 100 foreign nationals to incite riots during a key election in Moldova last weekend, which was won by the country’s pro-Western government.
In France, the pig heads were discovered near nine Paris-area mosques and five of them were written with the surname of French President Emmanuel Macron, authorities said.
A farmer in France’s Normandy region alerted police that two people had bought about 10 pig heads from him, and he identified their car as having Serbian license plates, the Paris prosecutor’s office said.
The car was then filmed by security cameras in Paris, which also spotted two men depositing heads in front of mosques, the prosecutors’ office said. It said the men were foreign nationals, without identifying their country, and that they left France immediately afterward, with a Croatia-registered phone they were believed to be using tracked crossing the border with Belgium.
In May, a Paris Holocaust memorial, three synagogues and a restaurant were daubed with green paint, French media reported.
The attack was reminiscent of an earlier act of vandalism in May 2024, when a Paris memorial honoring people who distinguished themselves by helping to rescue Jews in France during the country’s Nazi occupation in World War II was defaced with painted blood-red hands. A French intelligence report said the Russian intelligence agency FSB ordered that attack.

PM wants to change how international law is used in asylum cases
01 Oct, 2025
Sam Francis
Sir Keir Starmer wants to change how international law is interpreted, to stop unsuccessful asylum seekers blocking their deportation on the grounds they could be sent to worse prisons or healthcare systems.
The prime minister told the BBC he did not want to "tear down" human rights laws, but is ready to look again at article three of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects against torture and degrading treatment.
The prime minister said mass migration in recent years meant there needed to be a change, but those genuinely fleeing persecution should still be given asylum.
His comments came after his home secretary set out plans to tighten rules for migrants seeking indefinite leave to remain.
Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme, Sir Keir said there was a difference between deporting someone to "summary execution" and sending them to somewhere with a different level of healthcare or prison conditions.
He added "we need to look again at the interpretation" of a wide range of international laws by UK courts.
He warned that laws must be "applied in the circumstances as they are now" before adding that countries were experiencing "mass migration in a way that we have not seen in previous years".
To meet this new challenge "we need to look at again at the interpretation of some of these provisions, not tear them down", he said.
On the issue of deportation, he was asked about the example of a Brazilian paedophile who successfully claimed he would be treated worse in a Brazilian prison than he would in a British prison.
The prime minister drew a line between deporting someone to "summary execution" and claims based on worse healthcare or prison conditions abroad.
"I believe that those genuinely fleeing persecution should be afforded asylum and that is a compassionate act," he added.
Pressed for details about what was blocking deportations of foreign criminals, Sir Keir cited Articles 3 and 8 of the ECHR - which ban torture and protect the right to private and family life respectively.
"But it's more than that," he said, pointing to the UN's Refugee Convention, Torture Convention and Convention on the Rights of the Child as potential barriers.
Ministers were already exploring ways to tighten the interpretation of some aspects of the ECHR to crack down on immigration.
In May, the government's immigration white paper promised legislation to "clarify" how the right to a family life in European human rights law should apply to immigration cases.
Before being made foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper ordered home officials to look into how courts used laws that halted deportations on torture grounds.
Sir Keir's comments come after a Labour conference dominated by efforts to confront Reform UK.
The prime minister used his keynote speech to cast Nigel Farage's movement as practising the "politics of grievance" and to position Labour as the party of "tolerant, decent" patriotism.
He stopped short in the speech of repeating his attack on Reform's deportation proposals as "racist" but vowed to fight racist rhetoric "with everything we have".
Sir Keir has also spent the conference contending with a provocative challenge to his leadership by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham who said Labour MPs had asked him all summer to return to Westminster and take over as prime minister.
Asked about internal challenges to his leadership, Sir Keir said he had "been underestimated every time" he had taken on a senior role.
Despite this, "I pushed through the barriers," he said.
Sir Keir told the BBC: "I didn't come into politics as some sort of popularity contest.
"I came in with one focus, which is changing my country for the better.
"I'm proud to be prime minister, getting on with that work."
During a wide-ranging interview, Sir Keir also said it was "wrong" that thousands of young people remained out of work because of mental problems.
"I'm not saying you don't and shouldn't have benefits for mental health issues but I do think we need to examine this quite carefully," he added.
"I say it because if you are on benefits, in your 20s, it is going to be extremely difficult to get off benefits for the rest of your life."
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, he added he was committed getting "bills down for those at home and for businesses," as energy costs increase by 2% from Wednesday for millions of people in England, Wales and Scotland, as regulator Ofgem's latest price cap come into effect.
But Richard Fuller, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury said Labour was "getting ready to wack people with higher taxes" at the Budget, which will be unveiled in November.

Islamic Jihad Leader: Trump's Plan Seeks to Force Surrender on Palestinian People
01 Oct 2025
Ismail al-Sindawi, a leader in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, stressed that the declaration presented by US President Donald Trump and Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, the war criminal wanted by the International Criminal Court, does not indicate any real plan to stop the aggression. Rather, it reflects a US-Israeli partnership seeking to force the Palestinian people to surrender.
In a press statement, al-Sindawi said that the terms promoted by Trump in a press conference represent impossible conditions, most notably the surrender of the resistance's weapons and linking withdrawal to political concessions.

Zionist enemy closes Ibrahimi Mosque to Palestinians
30 Sep 2025
The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs condemned, on Tuesday, the decision of the Israeli authorities to completely close the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, including its corridors, courtyards, and sections, and to prevent worshippers from entering it for three consecutive days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), under the pretext of the Jewish holidays.
According to the Ma'an News Agency, the ministry affirmed that these practices constitute a blatant violation of freedom of worship and a systematic targeting of the Ibrahimi Mosque. It warned of the danger of the escalating occupation measures against the Mosque, which range from repeatedly preventing the call to prayer, restricting the entry of worshippers through electronic gates, conducting searches, and obstructing the work of the Mosque's staff and preventing them from performing their duties.
The Ministry of Endowments called on the international community and UNESCO to take urgent action to stop these violations and attacks that threaten the purely Islamic religious character of the Ibrahimi Mosque.

Druze seek Sweida autonomy and turn toward Israel, adding new twist to Syria’s tensions
October 01, 2025
BEIRUT: Syrian government fighters entered the city of Sweida over the summer in an apparent bid to assert control over the enclave of the Druze minority that for years had operated in semiautonomy.
It backfired. Sectarian attacks on Druze civilians during the ensuing fighting have hardened Sweida’s stance against the government, pushed it toward Israel, and led some in the minority sect to go as far as calling for secession.
Now Druze groups have set up a de facto military and governmental body in Sweida, similar to the Kurdish-led authorities in the country’s northeast. It is a major setback for Damascus struggling to exert its authority across the country following a 13-year civil war and win the support of minorities.
When former President Bashar Assad was brought down by Islamist-led insurgents in December, many Druze celebrated, welcoming a new era after over 50 years of autocratic rule. They were willing to give interim President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, a former Al-Qaeda-linked militant who promised a democratic and inclusive political transition, a chance.
Among them was Omar Alkontar, a 21-year-old biology student. Then his village outside the city of Sweida was burned to the ground in July’s clashes.
Now, he said, “The main idea is that we have to separate (from Damascus) to prevent another massacre.”
A de facto Druze administration
While many Druze were initially willing to work with the new authorities, a notable exception was Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri, a divisive figure who had flip-flopped between support for Assad and anti-government protests and now opposed dealing with the new government.
In July, armed groups affiliated with Al-Hijri clashed with local Bedouin clans, spurring intervention by government forces who effectively sided with the Bedouins. Hundreds of civilians, mostly Druze, were killed, many by government fighters.
Videos surfaced online showing armed men killing Druze civilians kneeling in squares and shaving the mustaches off elderly men in an act of humiliation.
The sectarian violence changed the minds of many Druze about the new authorities — and about Al-Hijri, who has emerged as the dominant Druze figure in Syria. In August, he established a government-like body called the Supreme Legal Council.
Dozens of armed factions originally formed to counter drug gangs and Daesh group extremists have banded together under the National Guard. Critics say it includes former Assad loyalists and allied militias trafficking the amphetamine known as Captagon. It also includes former opponents of Al-Hijri, most notably the Men of Dignity, a prominent group that had endorsed cooperation with Damascus before the July violence.
“We urge all the honorable in the world … to stand with the Druze sect in southern Syria to declare a separate region that keeps us protected until the end of time,” Al-Hijri said in August, upon welcoming the Men of Dignity into the National Guard.
Al-Hijri did not respond to interview requests and it is unclear exactly what kind of system he envisions.
Many in Sweida want some form of autonomy in a federal system. A smaller group is calling for total partition. Local Druze figures that still back Al-Sharaa are now widely seen as traitors.
The attacks in Sweida sounded “strong alarm bells among the Druze” as well as other minority groups, said Mazen Ezzi, a Syrian researcher from Sweida now based in Paris.
“The Druze realized that to stay part of this new political status quo” under the new authorities “will be extremely difficult,” he said.
Israel seizes the moment
Most of the roughly 1 million Druze worldwide live in Syria, with the rest in Lebanon, Israel and the Golan Heights which Israel seized from Syria in 1967 and later annexed.
The Druze of Syria take pride in their historic involvement in revolts against Ottoman and French colonial rule to establish a secular, nationalist Syrian state.
Sheikh Mowafak Tarif, Israel’s Druze spiritual leader, was largely rejected by Druze leaders in Syria and Lebanon, who opposed Israel and supported the Palestinians.
But what happened in July has shaken about a century of Syrian Druze political history and driven many toward a formerly taboo ally.
When violence broke out in Sweida, Tarif called for Israeli military intervention to protect the Druze. Israel responded, launching strikes on Syrian government forces and on the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters in Damascus. Syrian forces withdrew from Sweida.
Tarif told The Associated Press that he and Al-Hijri stay in touch “all the time,” organizing deliveries of aid to the besieged province.
Tarif also meets with senior Western politicians and diplomats and has called for a demilitarized southern Syria and establishment of a humanitarian corridor from Israel to deliver food and medical supplies to Sweida. Israeli officials have also pushed for a wider demilitarized zone in Syria’s south.
Al-Hijri has thanked Israel publicly on several occasions.
The impact on the ground is apparent.
When someone hoisted an Israeli flag in Sweida in March, residents quickly took it down. Now, in Karama Square, where people once gathered to celebrate Assad’s downfall, portraits of Al-Hijri and Tarif appear side by side at protests against Al-Sharaa. Most carry the Druze faith’s five-colored flag, but some also wave the Israeli flag.
It’s a sign of “a people who feel let down by their nationalism,” Ezzi said.
Alkontar, the biology student, doesn’t believe Israel’s motives are altruistic, but says its intervention was a lifeline for many in Sweida.
“It’s not necessarily a love for Israel. They felt safer after the strikes, which is very sad,” Alkontar said after a attending a protest in Karama Square. “You want the army of your own government to provide you with that security, not a foreign country.”
Damascus struggles to change course
Al-Sharaa has tried to appeal to the Druze community since the July fighting and warned that Israel is trying to exploit the tensions.
“Mistakes were made by all sides: the Druze community, the Bedouins, even the state itself,” he said in an interview with state television. “Everyone who committed wrongdoing, made mistakes, or violated people’s rights must be held accountable.”
The president then formed a fact-finding mission. Last month, Damascus alongside the United States and Jordan announced a road map to return displaced Druze and Bedouins, deliver aid to Sweida, and bring about reconciliation.
Both moves were widely dismissed in Sweida.
A Sweida resident, whose fiance and members of his family were killed by gunmen who raided their village, accused Damascus of “covering the attacks up.” She spoke on condition of anonymity after previously receiving threats for speaking out.
“When the (Assad) regime fell, we were the first people to celebrate … but I think Ahmad Al-Sharaa is a murderous extremist,” she said.
Alkontar is disheartened as he walks past another long breadline in a small bakery near ruined buildings after visiting a displaced family.
He believes some Druze “could have a change of heart ... if the government changes its ways and extends a hand.” But many will not.
“As long as this government in Damascus stays, people will lean toward partition or independence,” Alkontar said. “I prefer we stay part of Syria without this ruling group. But as long as they’re there, I don’t know if even federalism will keep us safe.”

Yemen’s Houthi rebels claim missile attack on Dutch-flagged ship in the Gulf of Aden
October 01, 2025
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Yemen’s Houthi rebels early Wednesday claimed the attack that left a Dutch-flagged cargo ship ablaze and adrift in the Gulf of Aden, underlining the range of their weaponry and their campaign targeting shipping over the Israel-Hamas war.
The attack Monday on the Minervagracht was the most serious assault by the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Gulf of Aden, some distance from the Red Sea where they have sunk four vessels since November 2023.
The attack also comes as Israel engages in a new ground offensive targeting Gaza City as efforts to reach a ceasefire again hang in the balance. Meanwhile, the Mideast also remains on edge after the United Nations reimposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.
The Houthis fired a cruise missile that targeted and struck the Minervagracht, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said.
Saree accused the the ship’s owners, Amsterdam-based Spliethoff, of violating “the entry ban to the ports of occupied Palestine.” Initially, the US Navy-overseen Joint Maritime Information Center said the Minervagracht had no ties to Israel, but a note Tuesday said the center was “reviewing vessel affiliations for possible links to Israel.”
The attack wounded two mariners on board the Minervagracht, whose 19-member crew hailed from the Philippines, Russia, Sri Lanka and Ukraine. They were forced to evacuate the ship after the strike inflicted substantial damage.
A European naval force operating in the region, known as Operation Aspides, said Tuesday the Minervagracht was on fire and adrift after the crew’s rescue.
The Houthis have launched missile and drone attacks on over 100 ships and on Israel in response to the war in Gaza, saying they were acting in solidarity with the Palestinians. However, some of the group’s targets have had tenuous links or no connections at all to Israel.
The Houthi attack widens the area of the rebels’ recent assaults, as the last recorded attack on a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Aden before the Minervagracht came in August 2024.
Their attacks over the past two years have upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which about $1 trillion of goods passed each year before the war.
The Houthis stopped their attacks on shipping and Israel itself during a brief ceasefire in the war. They later became the target of an intense weekslong campaign of airstrikes ordered by US President Donald Trump before he declared a ceasefire had been reached with the rebels.
The Houthi campaign against shipping has killed at least eight mariners and seen four ships sunk.

Yemen’s Houthis say they will target US oil firms with sanctions
September 30, 2025
LOS ANGELES: Yemen’s Houthis will target US oil majors including ExxonMobil and Chevron with sanctions, a body affiliated with the Iran-backed militia said on Tuesday.
The Sanaa-based Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (HOCC), a body set up last year to liaise between Houthi forces and commercial shipping operators, sanctioned 13 US companies, nine executives and two vessels, HOCC said.
The sanctions are in retaliation for US sanctions imposed on the Houthis this year despite a truce agreement with the Trump administration in which the Yemeni group agreed to stop attacking US-linked ships in the Red Sea and the wider Gulf of Aden, HOCC said.
Exxon declined comment and Chevron did not immediately comment.
“It remains unclear whether these sanctions signal that the Houthis will begin targeting vessels linked to the sanctioned organizations, companies, and individuals — a move that would risk violating the ceasefire agreement with the Trump administration, facilitated by Oman,” independent Middle East analyst Mohammed Albasha said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.
The Houthis since 2023 have launched numerous assaults on vessels in the Red Sea that they deem to be linked with Israel in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians over Israel’s war on Gaza.
That campaign has had little effect on vital oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is located between Oman and Iran and connects the Arabian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
The Houthis have occasionally attacked ships in the Gulf of Aden, which connects the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
The Houthis on Monday claimed responsibility for attacking a Dutch cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden with a cruise missile, injuring two crew and leaving the vessel ablaze and adrift.
Last year, the US imported about 500,000 barrels per day of crude and condensate from Gulf countries through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the EIA. That represents about 7 percent of total US crude oil and condensate imports — the lowest level in nearly 40 years due to increased domestic production and Canadian imports, the agency said.
Albasha, founder of US-based Risk Advisory Basha Report, told Reuters the move is unlikely to affect the oil market, since most of the trade in the region is handled by Chinese, Russian, Iranian, and other Gulf companies that the Houthis want to keep on good terms with.
“This looks like a media stunt, a way to save face and reassure their people in light of mounting US sanctions and Israeli strikes that have been hurting their economy,” he said.
To that end, the HOCC statement also included this line: “The ultimate goal of the sanctions is not punishment in itself, but to bring about positive behavioral change.”

Gaza civil defense says 41 killed in Israeli attacks
September 30, 2025
NUSEIRAT: Gaza’s civil defense agency and hospitals said Tuesday that Israeli forces killed at least 41 people across the territory, including 17 near an aid distribution center.
The Israeli military has pressed on with its offensive even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced support for US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war.
Officials from Gaza’s civil defense agency — a rescue force operating under Hamas authority — said 17 people were shot dead by Israeli forces near an aid distribution site near the Wadi Gaza bridge in central Gaza.
Al-Awda hospital confirmed receiving 17 bodies and said 33 people were wounded.
“We received 17 martyrs and 33 injured as a result of Israeli forces targeting gatherings of citizens near the humanitarian aid distribution area near Wadi Gaza Bridge in the central Gaza Strip,” the hospital said in a statement.
Thousands of Palestinians congregate daily near food distribution points in Gaza, including those managed by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Since launching in late May, its operations have been marred by regular reports of Israeli forces firing on those waiting to collect aid.
An AFP journalist saw hundreds of children crowding a food distribution center in Gaza’s central Nuseirat area, where volunteers were handing out rice and other supplies.
When asked about Tuesday’s incident near Wadi Gaza Bridge, the military said it was looking into it.
Israeli restrictions on the entry of aid supplies into Gaza since the start of the war nearly two years ago have led to shortages of food and essential items, including medicine and fuel, which hospitals require to power their generators.
The civil defense added that 15 more people were killed in several strikes in Gaza City, from where hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee due to Israeli air and ground assaults.
Nine others were killed elsewhere in the territory, it said.
Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties accessing swathes of the territory mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defense and the Israeli military.
On Monday, Trump unveiled a 20-point plan for an immediate halt to the war in Gaza, which Netanyahu backed.
Hamas has yet to respond, and on Tuesday Trump issued an ultimatum to the group.
“We’re going to do about three or four days,” Trump told reporters when asked about a timeframe.
“We’re just waiting for Hamas, and Hamas is either going to be doing it or not. And if it’s not, it’s going to be a very sad end.”

Netanyahu apologizes to Qatar as Doha awaits Hamas response to Trump’s Gaza plan
September 30, 2025
DUBAI: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has apologized to Qatar over a recent attack on Doha, the Gulf state’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Tuesday during a press confrence.
Spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said Qatar was also satisfied with the security assurances it had received from the United States in the aftermath of the incident.
The September 9 attack, aimed at senior Hamas leaders engaged in US-backed ceasefire negotiations, killed at least five lower-ranking Hamas members and a Qatari security official. Hamas’s top leaders survived the attempt.
Turning to Gaza, the spokesperson noted that Doha was still waiting for Hamas’s formal response to US President Donald Trump’s peace initiative but voiced optimism that the group would agree to the proposal.
The official added that Turkiye will join the mediation team meeting on Tuesday, alongside Qatar, the US, and other partners, to advance negotiations.
Qatar reiterated its support for Trump’s plan, describing it as a comprehensive vision to end the war in Gaza and restore stability to the region.
Trump said Monday that Netanyahu supported a broad Gaza peace plan aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire.
The 20-point plan calls for the war to end as soon as both sides agree, with Israeli withdrawals coordinated with the release of the final hostages held by Hamas. An initial ceasefire would take effect during this period.

The dish from Islamic tradition said to have antidepressant properties
RAHAF JAMBI
September 30, 2025
RIYADH: Talbinah, the traditional porridge made from barley flour, milk, and honey, is said to have been recommended by the Prophet Muhammad, having benefits for both the body and mind.
Despite its simple ingredients, the dish is a balanced mix of natural ingredients said to have profound healing properties, according to the Hadith.
Its main ingredient, barley, is rich in soluble fibers, vitamins (especially B-complex), minerals and active compounds that support overall health.
In recent years, Talbinah has gained popularity, especially among health enthusiasts, boasting numerous scientifically backed benefits that have piqued consumer interest, particularly in the Middle East.
For Muslims, Talbinah is cherished as a nourishing and comforting food.
Abigayle Andre, a TikToker from the UK who converted to Islam, recently shared her Talbinah recipe with her followers.
“I wanted to cook it because I am a convert to Islam and it is a Sunnah dish — one that isn’t widely known in the UK but comes with many health benefits.
“Our Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said it helps with depression. Many struggle with mental health, and I wanted to share this recipe to help others and revive a Sunnah.”
“It tastes like smooth porridge, reminiscent of traditional English breakfast porridge made from oats and milk — wholesome, easy to prepare, and incredibly comforting.”
Andre explained to Arab News: “I enjoy trying Sunnah foods as they connect me to our Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). Knowing he enjoyed Talbinah and Thareed, I wanted to honor him through these dishes.”
Until recently, Talbinah was rarely found in restaurants or health food stores. However, it has surged in popularity, driven by a global trend toward natural and organic foods.
With the rise of preventive nutrition, Talbinah is increasingly featured in digital content, packaged products and innovative recipes.
Dr. Zahra’a Al-Ahmed, specialist in public nutrition, notes: “Research suggests that Talbinah may have antidepressant-like effects, boost mental health, enhance nutritional status, and uplift mood.
“It’s a great source of essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, including iron and zinc.”
Studies, including a 2013 paper in clinical interventions in aging from the National University of Malaysia and An Najah National University, show that Talbinah contains compounds that may help produce serotonin more than other carbohydrate-based foods.
Rich in soluble fibers known as beta-glucans, Talbinah can also help lower cholesterol levels.
It also slows glucose absorption, making it a good choice for those monitoring blood sugar.
Its dietary fibers improve bowel movement and nourish beneficial gut bacteria, alleviating digestive issues.
Additionally, antioxidants and minerals like zinc and magnesium in Talbinah bolster immune function and enhance disease resistance.
One notable example of Talbinah’s revival comes from Saweeg in Al-Madinah, which has developed a unique Talbinah-flavored ice cream, a modern creation that merges health benefits with innovation.
This ice cream has generated buzz on social media, redefining Talbinah as a contemporary food ingredient.
Today, Talbinah is available in health stores, major supermarkets, and online retailers like Amazon, Noon and iHerb, as well as specialty stores like Saweeg, which offer modern Talbinah products.
Instant Talbinah powders are also available in flavors like cinnamon, vanilla or date for quick preparation.
Talbinah can be enjoyed as a warm morning drink, a cold pudding with fruits, or even as a unique ice cream flavor. It can be made at home or purchased ready-made.
With growing awareness of nutrition’s impact on mental and physical health, Talbinah stands out as a nourishing choice.
For Muslims, it holds a special place as a comfort food, exemplifying how a return to traditional roots can also be a step forward in today’s health-conscious society.

Saudi authorities arrest individual practicing health profession without license
September 30, 2025
LONDON: Saudi authorities arrested an individual violating the country’s health regulations after being caught practicing a health profession without a license and promoting it on social media.
The suspect, an Arab expatriate, may face six months in prison and a fine of up to SR100,000 (approximately $26,000).
The Ministry of Health reported that authorities apprehended the individual in the Northern Borders Region for offering unauthorized health services, including occupational therapy, disk treatment, nerve correction, and post-thrombosis follow-ups, which posed risks to patient safety and violated health regulations.
The suspect visited patients’ homes to engage in unlicensed activities and was arrested in coordination with security authorities.
The ministry emphasized that it will not waver in cracking down on illegal practices and will continue to strengthen its supervisory campaigns to protect the community, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
It urged the public to report irregular health practices by calling the Unified Call Centre at 937, highlighting that community awareness and cooperation are essential defenses against these violations.

A "terrorist group" has been trying to disrupt the peaceful environment of the Sharadiya Durga Puja, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said today.
Speaking to journalists in the afternoon during a visit to the Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka, Jahangir said, "You know about that incident in Khagrachhari. The purpose of that incident was to disrupt the peaceful celebration of the puja. But the terrorists' attempt has been thwarted and the puja is proceeding well."
Jahangir did not, however, specify which incident he was referring to.
He also claimed that terrorists are being supported by groups both inside and outside the country.
Warning countrymen, the adviser added, "The terrorists will try to [commit violence] everywhere."
Jahangir said that the government has taken adequate security measures to ensure smooth Durga Puja celebrations. He said alongside police and Ansar, a large number of volunteers from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and the Puja Celebration Committee are assisting in maintaining security and discipline across the country.

U.S. Report Warns of Rising Human Trafficking Risks in Afghanistan
By Fidel Rahmati
September 30, 2025
The U.S. State Department warns human trafficking risks in Afghanistan are rising, with minorities, children, and women facing forced labour, sexual exploitation, and recruitment by armed groups.
The U.S. State Department, in its latest Trafficking in Persons report released on Tuesday, raised alarming concerns over the worsening situation of human trafficking in Afghanistan.
The report said members of religious and ethnic minorities such as Shia Hazaras, Ahmadis, Sikhs, Hindus, and Baha’is face heightened threats from the Taliban and armed groups like ISIS-K, making them more vulnerable to exploitation.
It noted that many from these communities have been forced to hide or flee the country, leaving them exposed to traffickers who prey on displaced populations.
According to the findings, Afghan men, women, and children seeking work in neighbouring countries, especially Iran and Pakistan, often fall victim to forced labour and sexual trafficking through intermediaries. Thousands of Afghans deported from these countries also face renewed risks due to worsening economic conditions at home.
The report further highlighted that children, particularly boys, are coerced into heavy labour, organised crime, and drug trafficking in Iran. Others are forced into begging and other exploitative practices.
Armed groups have also been accused of unlawfully recruiting children as soldiers and using them in conflicts and military operations. Meanwhile, Afghan women and girls face increasing danger due to Taliban restrictions on education and employment, which push them into forced marriages and trafficking.
Experts warn that Afghanistan’s deepening political and economic instability, combined with the Taliban’s repressive policies, has created fertile ground for human trafficking. They urge urgent international action to protect victims and combat the spread of exploitation.

UNAMA Urges Immediate Restoration of Internet Access in Afghanistan
By Fidel Rahmati
October 1, 2025
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan has urged immediate restoration of internet services, warning the blackout isolates the country, threatens stability, and worsens humanitarian crises.
The United Nations has urged the Taliban to immediately restore internet and telecommunications services across Afghanistan, warning that the blackout is endangering lives and worsening the country’s crises.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said the near-total disruption of connectivity has effectively cut the nation off from the outside world. It warned the move poses severe risks to the population, threatens fragile economic stability, and deepens one of the world’s worst humanitarian emergencies.
UNAMA highlighted the broad consequences of the shutdown: banking and financial services have been paralysed, remittances are harder to send, aviation and emergency responses face disruption, and women and girls encounter further restrictions on healthcare and education. The blackout, it added, has also silenced voices and restricted freedom of expression.
The timing of the move, UNAMA noted, is especially dangerous. Afghanistan is grappling with deadly earthquakes in its eastern provinces — where women and girls make up more than half of the victims — while also facing mass forced returns of migrants from neighbouring countries. In such conditions, cutting access to telecommunications further endangers vulnerable families.
The UN mission underscored that the shutdown limits access to vital information and services, isolates Afghanistan society from the global community, and risks aggravating humanitarian needs. It described internet access as a basic necessity rather than a privilege.
UNAMA called for urgent measures to restore communications, stressing that digital access is essential for humanitarian relief, economic survival, and protection of fundamental rights.
The UN said restoring Afghanistan’s connection to the world is vital to prevent further suffering and ensure the country does not slide deeper into isolation.

Jamaat, five parties begin 2nd phase of protests today
Oct 1, 2025
Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh and four other parties yesterday announced the second phase of their simultaneous movement with nearly identical demands, including holding the next parliamentary election based on the July Charter and introducing proportional representation in the voting system.
After staging three days of protests in September, the parties announced fresh programmes at separate press conferences and through media statements.
They said they will conduct nationwide outreach campaigns from today (Oct 1) to October 9 to mobilise public opinion in favour of their demands.
As part of this initiative, they plan to organise views-exchange meetings, roundtable discussions, and seminars. The programmes also include rallies in Dhaka and all divisional cities on October 10, and the submission of memorandums to deputy commissioners on October 12.
Apart from Jamaat and Islami Andolan, the other parties joining this phase are Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa), and Nizam-e-Islam Party.
Like in previous phases, the parties' demands remain nearly identical and scheduled for the same dates. While some have outlined five points and others seven, the core demands are the same.
These include: holding the election based on the July Charter; introducing a proportional representation system in the national election for parliament (some propose only for the upper house); ensuring a level playing field for all parties and candidates; justice for oppression, killings, and corruption committed by the previous "fascist" regime; and banning the activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance for supporting autocracy.
At a press conference at Al-Falah Auditorium in Dhaka's Moghbazar yesterday afternoon, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar announced his party's programmes.
"We want to declare unequivocally that our five-point public demands have already become rational and acceptable to the people. The people have extended massive support and joined the street movement for these demands.
"The current government must immediately accept the people's five demands and hold the 13th parliamentary election in February based on the July National Charter. If the government ignores these legitimate demands and fails to resolve the ongoing crisis, the people will be forced to intensify their movement."
The BNP has maintained that reforms requiring constitutional amendment under the July Charter should be left to the next elected parliament.
Jamaat, on the other hand, wants constitutional amendments implemented before the election, either through an interim constitutional order or a referendum. It demands full implementation of the July Charter ahead of the polls.
In the morning, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmad announced a 12-day programme at a press conference at the party's central office in the capital's Paltan area.
Accusing the government of ignoring people's demands despite a series of programmes and dialogues, he said, "If a government formed by the people's blood continues to disregard their demands, it will lose its moral and legal legitimacy."
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, in a press release signed by party Ameer Mamunul Haque and Secretary General Jalaluddin Ahmad, announced an 11-day programme, including a mass rally in Dhaka, to press home its demands, including legal recognition of the July Charter.
The statement warned of tougher programmes if their demands are not met.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan said it would also join the second phase with a seven-point demand.
Jagpa Vice President and spokesperson Rashed Prodhan announced the party's programmes at a press conference at its Paltan office.
Nizam-e-Islam Party's Publicity Secretary Abdullah Al Masud Khan issued a press release outlining their programmes.

Afghanistan Among World’s Lowest in Academic Freedom, Scholars at Risk Report Shows
By Fidel Rahmati
October 1, 2025
Afghanistan’s academic freedom has collapsed, ranking among the world’s lowest with a 0.08 score in the Academic Freedom Index, the Scholars at Risk 2025 report shows. The Free to Think 2025 report, released today, October 1, 2025, by Scholars at Risk (SAR), warns that Afghanistan’s higher education system remains “completely restricted,” with the Taliban continuing to impose ideological control and eliminate women’s right to education.
According to the Academic Freedom Index (AFi), Afghanistan scored just 0.08, reflecting one of the lowest levels worldwide. The report stresses that since the Taliban takeover in 2021, the steepest declines have been in institutional autonomy and freedom of academic and cultural expression.
The Taliban’s tactics to silence dissenting voices intensified during the reporting period. On December 1, 2024, Professor Hassamuddin Rahimzai of Sheikh Zayed University was beaten unconscious by Taliban guards after objecting to a new faculty evaluation process aimed at replacing academics with madrasa-trained loyalists. He was later detained and reportedly tortured.
Later that month, 12 professors from Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani University in Kunar were forced to resign for opposing Taliban ideology. Around the same time, new restrictions barred Afghan lecturers from traveling abroad for education or training without written approval from Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Haibatullah.
In April and May 2025, the Taliban initiated sweeping faculty purges across Afghanistan universities. While described officially as part of a 14 percent staff reduction, dismissals disproportionately targeted women, Hazaras, and other minorities. At Bamiyan University, more than 50 staff were dismissed, while Sheikh Zayed University saw around 120 employees removed.
The crackdown on women’s education deepened. On December 3, 2024, the Taliban banned women from pursuing medical studies, including midwifery and nursing — the last higher-education fields available after earlier restrictions. Human Rights Watch warned that the decision would worsen women’s health outcomes, leaving many without female medical professionals.
International factors compounded the crisis. In February 2025, over 80 Afghan women studying STEM in Oman under USAID scholarships were told their funding was withdrawn. Although briefly extended, the program was abruptly canceled in April, leaving many stranded without legal protections or a path to complete their studies.
The American University of Afghanistan (AUAF), operating in exile in Qatar, suspended its Spring 2025 semester amid U.S. funding cuts. Similarly, the Asian University for Women in Bangladesh halted admissions for 330 Afghan women when U.S. support was suspended. Both decisions disrupted crucial educational lifelines for Afghan students.
The Free to Think 2025 report concludes that Afghanistan is among the most repressive countries for higher education today. Ideological purges, gender bans, and suppression of minority voices have extinguished the last spaces for academic freedom.
Combined with U.S. funding cuts to international programs, Afghan students, particularly women and minorities, are left without hope of pursuing education at home or abroad. Scholars at Risk warns that without urgent international support, Afghanistan’s academic future faces near-total collapse.

UN Warns Internet Blackout in Afghanistan Disrupts Earthquake Relief
By Fidel Rahmati
October 1, 2025
The UN has warned that Afghanistan’s nationwide internet blackout is disrupting earthquake relief, leaving remote survivors cut off from aid, financial services, and vital humanitarian coordination efforts.
United Nations aid agencies say the nationwide internet blackout in Afghanistan has severely hampered efforts to reach remote communities devastated by last month’s deadly earthquakes.
Indrika Ratwatte, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan, said on Tuesday, September 30, that all telephone and fiber-optic services had been cut “until further notice,” leaving nearly the entire country offline.
He explained that relief teams in the mountainous eastern provinces can no longer coordinate with central offices, making it nearly impossible to deliver aid to earthquake survivors.
Ratwatte added that displaced families in Kunar’s valleys, many of whom once lived in isolated mountain villages, face especially dire conditions without timely assistance.
The blackout has also disrupted health services, banking, and financial systems, intensifying the humanitarian crisis in already fragile communities.
Ratwatte stressed that international money transfers, local banking transactions, and other vital community services have been brought to a halt, cutting off lifelines for thousands.
The UN has urged the immediate restoration of communications, warning that without connectivity, humanitarian groups cannot provide life-saving support to Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations.
Officials cautioned that the blackout not only delays earthquake recovery but also threatens to deepen Afghanistan’s economic and social hardships in the weeks ahead.

UN Envoy: Afghanistan Internet Blackout Endangers Rights and Economy
By Fidel Rahmati
October 1, 2025
UN human rights envoy Richard Bennett warned Afghanistan’s internet blackout threatens daily life, women’s rights, and fragile economic stability, urging immediate restoration and international attention.
Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has warned that the country’s ongoing internet shutdown poses serious risks to human rights and economic stability.
Posting on X late Tuesday, September 30, Bennett said that without the urgent restoration of internet services, the daily lives of Afghans, especially women and girls, would face severe disruption.
He cautioned that the blackout is already undermining access to education, healthcare, and communication for women and girls, while also threatening freedom of expression and access to information.
Bennett also stressed that the economic impact could be devastating, with business operations, trade, and remittances jeopardized, potentially pushing Afghanistan’s fragile economy closer to collapse.
He urged the international community to take the situation seriously, warning that prolonged restrictions would deepen the country’s humanitarian crisis. Bennett noted that an official UN statement on the issue will soon follow.
His remarks underscore growing concern that the blackout is not only a technological setback but a human rights emergency with far-reaching consequences.
The pressure from international actors may prove decisive in urging officials to restore connectivity and protect fundamental rights at a time of escalating crisis.

Lifting ban on AL activities a possibility
Oct 1, 2025
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has said that the Awami League's activities are suspended for the time being and "anytime it will be open".
"They [Awami League] remain valid as a party, but activities for the time being are suspended. Anytime it will be open," he said in a recent interview with news organisation Zeteo on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Asked by Zeteo's Mehdi Hasan whether he meant that AL's activities could be "unsuspended", Yunus said, "That's a possibility."
The chief adviser also said Amartya Sen and others' criticisms about the action against the AL are wrong because the interim government has not banned the party, which was ousted through the July uprising.
Asked how banning a group from contesting polls could be democratic, the chief adviser said the matter rests with the Election Commission, which considered the possibilities and the characteristics of the party that may disrupt the whole election.
"So, they [EC] thought it's better not to...," he said.
When Mehdi said the AL has millions of supporters in Bangladesh, Yunus said, "I wouldn't say millions. They have supporters, but I don't know how many [are] left."
The chief adviser added that bowing to a group just because it is powerful does not mean supporting it.
He alleged that the Awami League is not behaving as a political party.
"They have not expressed remorse that they have killed people. They have not taken responsibility for anything that they have done during this period. Not a word. Instead, they're always alleging that somebody else is responsible for that," he said.
'STAY 5 YEARS'
During the interview, Mehdi questioned the interim government's time in power, asking why it is taking too long -- 18 months -- to hold the election while Nepal's interim leader promised to hand over power after six months.
Yunus replied, "You said people are saying it takes so much time. There are also people who say, 'Stay 5 years, stay 10 years, stay 50 years.' So, people are saying all kinds of things."
He said no one defined how long the interim government should be in power. "It's our decision how long we should be there. But we have an understanding that we have three tasks to perform. One's reform. And there's a trial. The last one is election."
The chief adviser said reform was a "big agenda" to have "a different kind of structure that will block the path for "fascism to come back".
If the election is held without the reforms, the "same old stuff will happen again under different names, different pictures and so on", he said.
ATTACKS ON HINDUS
The chief adviser dismissed the allegation that violence targeting Hindus increased since he took charge after the uprising.
"One of the specialties of India right now is fake news. A barrage of fake news," he claimed.
Mehdi then asked if Yunus was insisting that there is no anti-Hindu violence.
At that, the chief adviser said there were "some conflicts" that were not communal in nature, but related to issues like land and family disputes.
When Mehdi noted that The New York Times and other independent media have reported that attacks on Hindus have increased, Yunus said, "No, it has not increased. I would say [the] government is very alert on that one because this is the one thing India is always pushing that we are…"

Islamic bank deposits keep rising
Oct 1, 2025
Deposits flowing to Islamic banks rose in the April-June quarter of 2025, buoyed by a sharp increase in the number of customers thanks to a renewal of confidence.
Total deposits stood at Tk 4.57 lakh crore at the end of June, up 3.22 percent from Tk 4.42 lakh crore three months earlier.
The volume of deposits was also 2.67 percent higher than that a year ago, Bangladesh Bank said in its quarterly report on Islamic banking.
Of the total, deposits of 10 full-fledged Islamic banks amounted to Tk 3.97 lakh crore, while Islamic banking branches of conventional banks held Tk 25,333 crore and Islamic windows Tk 34,083 crore.
The 10 dedicated Islamic banks accounted for 87 percent of the system's deposits, with branches and windows representing 5.54 percent and 7.45 percent, respectively.
This was the third consecutive quarter in which Shariah-based banks recorded growth in deposits since the July–September period, when savings fell as low as Tk 4.36 lakh crore due to an erosion of confidence amid allegations of loan irregularities.
In its latest report, the BB said it has provided liquidity support to the weak Islamic banks through various windows to help them operate.
Besides, the BB also recently dissolved governing bodies of major Islamic banks and restructured those bodies to bring back public confidence in the aftermath of last year's regime change, it said.
"It is expected that these pragmatic steps will help the Islamic banks attain public confidence and lead the sector to operate on a sound footing," it added.
The BB report said overall, the total number of deposit accounts climbed from 3.6 crore in March this year to 3.9 crore at the end of June.
The overall number of investment accounts, however, decreased slightly during the period.
At the end of June, Islamic banks accounted for 24.35 percent of total deposits and 29.18 percent of investments of the entire banking sector.
The report said Islamic banks have been able to establish themselves as an alternative funding source in the economic development of Bangladesh. Over the period, the sector has been gaining an increasing market share of the overall banking industry.
However, the number of rural branches of full-fledged Islamic banks has not kept pace with demand. "They may focus more on expanding their outreach into rural areas," said the report.
The report said Islamic banks may invest more in industries that bring about social benefits, particularly in agriculture and small businesses.
The BB said some full-fledged Islamic banks had faced severe liquidity crises in the recent past due to irregularities and a lack of good governance.
"So, it is essential to establish good governance in the Islamic banking system, as good governance and accountability are key to navigating the current crisis and ensuring sustainable growth of this sector," said the central bank.

This Is War, Kill Every Single One Of Them – Fani-Kayode Blows Hot Over Zamfara Mosque Massacre
September 30, 2025
By Justina Otio
Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has condemned the gruesome murder of five worshippers during an early morning prayer in Yandoto village, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Speaking via his 𝕏 account, he insisted that the killers should be wiped out, adding that there should be no room for discussions or negotiations.
Fani-Kayode asserted that the killers are terrorists not bandits and described their actions as an act of war.
He wrote: “These are not bandits. Pls stop calling them bandits. They are bloodthirsty killers and terrorists and every single one of them should be wiped off the face of the earth.
“If our people cannot worship God in peace then we have nothing. No negotiation, no discussion, no ransom payments, no rehabilitation.
“This is WAR. Kill every single one of them, wipe out their blood line and decimate their communities and abodes. There is no place on earth for those that slaughter innocent civilians.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has accused Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of failing to address the escalating banditry crisis in the state.
Naija News reports that a deadly attack occurred on Sunday in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area, which left several residents and vigilante members dead.
Speaking via a statement on Monday, the Publicity Secretary of the party, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, described the massacre as “a despicable and senseless act.”
He blamed the governor for the insecurity situation in the state, noting that it is a monumental leadership failure.
Adewara said, “The gruesome videos of the casualties circulating online make it look like Kwara is now at war. Under AbdulRahman’s watch, terror is reigning, kidnappers are taking over rural villages, and nowhere is safe again.”
The opposition party faulted AbdulRazaq’s alleged silence and absence from the affected community, insisting that a responsible leader should have personally visited Oke-Ode to commiserate with victims’ families and give assurances of decisive action.
It further accused the governor of neglecting local vigilantes and security personnel “battling criminals in the bush,” while diverting funds to “footballers and entertainers outside the state.”
The PDP’s criticism comes amid rising concern in Kwara North, where repeated bandit attacks have forced residents to abandon farms, schools, and businesses.

Madagascar: Gen Z-led protests continue despite government dissolution
October 1, 2025
Protests were ongoing in Madagascar on Tuesday, a day after the dissolution of the country's government.
President Andry Rajoelina appeared on state television on Monday night to announce the exceptional decision.
He expressed his sympathy to the families of the people killed in the protests and acknowledged the failings of his administration.
“Your demands have been heard, and I apologise if there are members of the government who have not done the work that the people expected,” Rajoelina said.
But the government's dismissal was not enough to calm the anger of the protesters and their main demand remains the same: the resignation of the head of state.
"Even if he fired the members of the government, the government did nothing to us. He is the one at the head of the country, not the government — he should go, and everything will be fine in the country," one Gen Z protester told Africanews.
"We’re not afraid, even if he puts us in prison, even if he kills us — we are protesting for our country," they added.
On the side of the dismissed ministers, only one has spoken so far: Paubert Mahatante, Minister of Fisheries, who declared on his Facebook page that minister or not, he will always remain a servant of the Malagasy people.
Water and power shortages
Demonstrators took to the streets of Madagascar starting Thursday, to protest against recurrent water and power shortages.
These Gen-Z led protests are some of the largest that Madagascar has seen in years, and the most serious challenge Rajoelina has faced since his re-election in 2023.
In response, the government has imposed a nighttime curfew in Antananarivo since Thursday and in other major cities since Friday.
On the ground, police also repeatedly used teargas and fired rubber bullets at demonstrators.
The United Nations said at least 22 people have been killed and more than 100 injured during the demonstrations. The Malagasy ministry of foreign affairs has disputed these figures.

DRC: Former president Joseph Kabila sentenced to death for treason
October 1, 2025
The verdict is in for Joseph Kabila. A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday convicted the former president of treason and other charges and sentenced him to death.
The high military court in Kinshasa ruled that Kabila was guilty of treason, war crimes, conspiracy and organizing an insurrection together with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group. It also ordered Kabila to pay $29 billion in damages to Congo, as well as $2 billion to the province of North Kivu and $2 billion to South Kivu.
The court ordered his immediate arrest.
Kabila, who has been on trial in absentia since July and whose whereabouts are unknown, was accused of treason, involvement in an insurrection movement, conspiracy, and supporting terrorism.
The prosecutor asked for the death penalty in August, a decision Kabila denounced as a political move designed to “silence the opposition.”
The government said Kabilia had collaborated with Rwanda and the M23 rebels that seized key cities in eastern Congo in January in a lightning assault and has since occupied the cities. The former head of state, who ruled from 2001 to 2019, has denied the allegations.
In May, the country’s senate voted to repeal his immunity from prosecution, a move Kabila denounced at the time as dictatorial.
Kabila had lived outside of Congo in self-imposed exile but returned in April to Goma, one of the cities held by the rebel group. His current location is unknown.

Islamic finance drives RM4.2t capital market as Malaysia leads global sukuk issuances
30 Sep 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Malaysia’s capital market currently stands at RM4.2 trillion, with Islamic instruments making up around 62 per cent, said the Securities Commission (SC).
Its chairman, Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi, stated that Malaysia accounts for one-third of all global sukuk issuances.
“About 80 per cent of our listed companies are designated as shariah-compliant. This depth gives us the platform to pilot Maqasid al-Shariah-aligned disclosures, covenants and outcome-linked structures at a meaningful scale,” he said in his opening address at the 16th Roundtable of the Securities Commission Malaysia and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) here today.
Mohammad Faiz stated that when fiduciary duty aligns with the principles of Maqasid al-Shariah — the fundamental guiding principles in the Islamic capital market — it results in a structured set of expectations that are applied differently across the ecosystem.
“Board members must set strategies that safeguard not only shareholder returns, but also look to the intergenerational use of resources to ensure business models do not create long-term harm,” he said.
Mohammad Faiz emphasised that senior management has the responsibility to translate these commitments into operating policies and risk management practices, embedding climate and sustainability factors into planning, stress tests and remuneration.
Meanwhile, investors and fund managers owe a duty to evaluate investments not just for financial returns but also to advance or undermine the objectives of shariah.
Regulators, in turn, must develop rules, incentives and disclosures to make accountability visible and enforceable, he said.
Mohammad Faiz stated that Malaysia has progressed from merely expressing intentions to actively implementing them.
“Under the National Sustainability Reporting Framework, Main Market public-listed companies with market capitalisation above RM2 billion begin climate-related reporting this year.
“The rest of the Main Market will follow in 2026. Subsequently, ACE Market public listed companies and large unlisted companies in 2027,” he said. — Bernama

Three more rescued from collapsed Islamic school in E Java
October 1, 2025
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Three more people were rescued alive on Tuesday from the rubble of a collapsed building of an Islamic boarding school in East Java, raising the total number of survivors pulled out by rescue teams to 11, officials said.
The victims were recovered at separate times early Tuesday morning from the ruins of Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo.
They were transported to nearby hospitals, according to SAR Mission Coordinator Nanang Sigit.
“The team is working under hazardous conditions, with unstable debris and heavy concrete,” said Sigit, who also heads the Surabaya SAR Office. “Safety remains our top priority during the evacuation.”
According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), 102 people have been accounted for since the collapse, including 91 who escaped on their own.
Eleven people have been rescued by joint SAR teams, while one fatality has been confirmed. Rescuers continue to search for 38 others believed to be trapped.
The operation involves hundreds of personnel from multiple agencies, including the Surabaya SAR Office, East Java and Sidoarjo disaster management agencies, the military, police, fire department, and volunteers.
Reinforcements arrived Tuesday from Basarnas Special Group units in Semarang and Yogyakarta, equipped with medical evacuation tools, breathing apparatuses, and other rescue gear.
As of Tuesday night, efforts were ongoing to clear more rubble in hopes of reaching additional victims.
Parliament Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said the House had coordinated with both central and local governments to support the response.
He expressed condolences to the victims and called for stronger oversight to prevent future tragedies.
“We’ve urged authorities to act swiftly and ensure similar incidents don’t occur elsewhere,” he told reporters in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar visited the site on Tuesday and said the ministry would work to improve safety standards for Islamic schools and madrasahs nationwide.
“This is a wake-up call. Many Islamic schools are built through community efforts without adequate technical supervision, which poses serious risks,” he said.
He urged school operators to prioritize proper construction practices to prevent similar disasters.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.

01 Oct 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 — The success of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Putrajaya Presint 11(1) in winning the 2025 World’s Best School Prize under the Supporting Healthy Lives category from T4 Education has elevated Malaysia’s name on the global stage.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a post on X, said the victory also proved that school-based innovation and best practices can serve as an inspiration to the world.
“Congratulations and well done to the school community, the Education Ministry (MoE) and all involved. This is the true spirit of Malaysia MADANI in educating, inspiring and shaping the future,” he said.
SK Putrajaya Presint 11(1) beat shortlisted schools from Türkiye, India, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil and Thailand.
The school’s success was based on the development of a mobile application called HELPIE, launched in 2023 to raise awareness of and provide mental health support to students.
The app, combined with a peer-to-peer classroom campaign, has so far benefited more than 1,000 students.
The announcement of the win was made during a live broadcast yesterday, witnessed at a special assembly co-hosted by the MoE and Yayasan Hasanah at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), which was also attended by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
The victory earned SK Putrajaya Presint 11(1) US$50,000 (RM235,000).
Established in 2022 by the UK-based global education body T4 Education, the award is regarded as the most prestigious educational recognition, celebrating schools worldwide that inspire positive change. — Bernama

Anwar to present US Gaza peace plan framework to Cabinet, stresses urgent humanitarian aid
01 Oct 2025
SEPANG, Oct 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will present the latest Gaza peace plan framework proposed by the United States (US) to the Cabinet for discussion.
He said that most Arab countries have agreed that the priority is to stop the violence, ensure the independence of Palestine, including Gaza, and expedite humanitarian aid.
“I don’t think the framework of the peace plan will meet our (Malaysia’s) aspirations, especially in defending the principle of justice for the Palestinian people.
“But it is still a start. It’s very meaningful, namely to end the violence and occupation of Palestine, and the urgent humanitarian aid must be expedited,” he said.
He said this at a media conference after visiting the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) here yesterday.
It was reported yesterday that Palestine welcomed efforts by US President Donald Trump to end the ongoing war in Gaza, while reiterating its commitment to work with Washington and other involved parties to achieve peace.
Yesterday, Trump announced a 20-point plan to end Israel’s war on the besieged Gaza Strip during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The plan includes the release of Israeli captives in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners, complete disarmament of Hamas, and the formation of a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee to govern the enclave.
Anwar said the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) mission, with 34 Malaysians among activists from 45 countries, carries a clear and meaningful humanitarian message.
“The conflict, tyranny, massacre, killing, oppression and destruction that are happening in Gaza have opened the eyes of the world to the meaning of humanitarian justice,” he said.
He also rejected the assumption that the younger generation is not following developments in Gaza, and instead described the participation of youth in previous gatherings as proof that they were sensitive and concerned about the Palestinian issue. — Bernama

MACC wins forfeiture of RM169m cash linked to ex-PM Ismail Sabri
01 Oct 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 — The government has successfully forfeited over RM169 million in cash allegedly belonging to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The amount, seized by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), comprised multiple currencies including ringgit, Singapore dollar, Swiss franc, euro, Japanese yen, British pound, New Zealand dollar, and Australian dollar.
Sessions Court Judge Suzana Hussin ordered the money to be surrendered to the government after allowing Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat’s application, as no third party appeared to contest the forfeiture proceedings, Berita Harian reported.
On Sept 8, the court was informed that Ismail Sabri and his former political secretary Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus, both named as respondents, had no intention of challenging the prosecution’s bid to forfeit the cash.
Suzana ruled that since there were no objections and no third-party claims, the court allowed the forfeiture under Section 41(1) of the MACC Act.
Mahadi told the court that a federal government gazette notice had been issued on Sept 22 and filed through the e-judiciary system, with no third party making any claim to the assets.
According to the notice, MACC sought the order after determining that the seized cash, held by Mohammad Anuar, belonged to Ismail Sabri and was linked to an offence under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act, which concerns failure to declare assets.
In June, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the agency planned to seek forfeiture of about RM170 million in cash and 16 kilograms of gold bars worth nearly RM7 million, which were seized from premises including a safe house linked to corruption and money laundering investigations.
