May 14, 2023

For the first time since 2008, a Muslim has failed to win on a Janata Dal (S) ticket -- the party has a strong presence on Old Mysuru region, which has about 11% Muslim population -- indicating one of the interesting sub-strands of the Karnataka election results, a consolidation of Muslim votes in the region in favour of the Congress.

Political experts said that Muslims appeared to have consolidated in favour of the Congress, especially in the Old Mysuru region at the cost of Janata Dal (Secular), which usually banks on VM (Vokkaliga-Muslim) factor to win big in the region. The JD (S) was the only party, which openly spoke against the hijab ban and halal issue.

“In the Old Mysuru region, along with the Vokkaliga votes, Muslim votes have moved to the Congress from the JD(S). Even though the JD(S) had taken a strong stand against hijab issue hoping to get more Muslim votes, the vote bank has rallied behind the Congress fearing JD(S) might join hands with the BJP,” said the political analyst A Narayana.

Indeed, while nineof the 15 Muslim candidates fielded by the Congress in Karnataka won, none of the 22 fielded by the JD(S) did. In 2018, of the seven Muslim candidates who won, five were from the Congress and two from the JD (S). In that election, 25 Muslim candidates were given tickets by the two parties, 17 by the Congress and 8 by the JD (S). The BJP did not field any Muslim candidates in 2018 and 2023.

Political analysts and party workers say Muslim votes matter in about 65 of the 224 constituencies in the state. An analysis of the election data showed that the Congress was able to win almost half of the 65 assembly seats where Muslims matter. According to Census 2011, the latest available, Muslims account for almost 13% of the state’s population.

In coastal Karnataka, the BJP won 12 of the 19 seats as compared to 16 in 2018. The Congress won five seats as compared to three in 2018 and the JD (S) won one. Of the 15 Congress Muslim candidates, only three were fielded from coastal Karnataka.

The BasavarajBommai headed BJP government in Karnataka introduced a slew of measures, which were seen as targeting the Muslim community. In 2022, the government banned Hijab in the pre-university colleges across the state, leading to protests in coastal Karnataka districts such as Udupi, which the BJP swept by winning all the five seats.

But Karnataka Education Minister and BJP leader BC Nagesh, who had enforced the Hijab ban and had urged an economic boycott of Muslims , lost from the Tiptur assembly constituency in Tumkur district.

In 2022, the BJP government passed laws against religious conversion and transportation of cattle in the state. Some BJP leaders also called for a ban on Halal meat in the state.

The BJP government’s decision to scrap 4% reservation for Muslims under the other backward classes category was seen as another onslaught on the minority population even though Bommai justified it saying reservation was not allowed for religious lines under the Constitution and that the community could get the benefit of reservation under the 10% quota for economically weaker sections. The matter was challenged in the Supreme Court where the state made a tactical retreat and announced that it would not implement the decision. The Congress has promised to restore the quota.

The Congress manifestor promised to ban organisations such as Popular Front of India and BajrangDal . PFI has already been banned by the Indian government, and the party’s invocation of the RSS affiliate Bajrang Dal did not go down well with the BJP with even Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashing out at it. The move, Congress leaders say, was thought ot.

“Before making the manifesto promise on Bajrang Dal, we calculated that the Hindu consolidation will not happen for the BJP. The reason was our surveys showing that BJP’s polarisation plank had peaked in 2018 assembly elections. So, Bajrang Dal was a gamble which has worked for us,” said a senior Congress leader who asked not to be named.

Although on Saturday there was no data available to gauge the Muslim consolidation in favour of the Congress, the India Today-Axis My India exit polls on Wednesday suggested that there would 10% increase in the Muslim votes for the Congress and results suggest a similar trend. Axis had projected 122-140 seats for the Congress. The Congress won 136.

In Old Mysuru, which falls in southern region of Karnataka having, 46 seats, the Congress won 29, the JD (S) 11 and the BJP 5. In 2018, the Congress won 11 and JD (S) 25. The BJP won 9.

Similarly, its success in constituencies in Bombay Karnataka where Muslims can influence the decision, helped the Congress win more seats in the region (17) than the BJP . This time, the Congress won 33 and BJP 16. In 2018, the BJP won 30 of the 50 seats in this region. “The Congress party is the only true secular party that cares for all communities. That is reason all communities including the Muslims have rallied behind us,” Congress leader MB Patil said.

Banning Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Only Solution, Insists Interior Minister

Iftikhar A. Khan

May 14, 2023

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Saturday said banning the PTI was the only solution and accused party chief Imran Khan of recruiting, organising, training and arming thousands of miscreants across the country over a decade.

Mr Sanaullah also criticised the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court for giving “extraordinary relief” to the PTI chairman in several cases — an assertion also hammered home on Saturday by other key ministers, including Climate Minister Sherry Rehman and Defence Minister Khwaja Asif.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Mr Sanaullah even said that Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari — who earlier this week turned down suggestions to ban the PTI — had not opposed the idea.

What Mr Bhutto-Zardari actually said, according to Mr Sanaullah, was that he did not like a ban on political parties but also stressed that “we will be compelled to do it if he (Imran Khan) does not change his behaviour”.

On the judiciary’s role, he said the chief justice not only welcomed the “criminal” but also passed an order for Mr Khan’s stay at a government building as a guest with the freedom to meet visitors of his choice.

The protesters who took part in the arson and vandalism of May 9 after Mr Khan’s arrest would not be spared, Mr Sanaullah said, repeating a warning also issued by the prime minister and the military over the past days.

He alleged all these “goons” burnt houses and defence installations on Mr Khan’s directives and warned that they would be identified through CCTV camera footage.

Sharing the number of protesters, he said some 40,000 to 45,000 people had participated during the three days of riots erupted after Mr Khan’s arrest in a corruption case on Tuesday.

He, however, could not give a clear reply when asked why the army had been called in under Article 245 of the Constitution if the number of protesters was so small and why the government appeared to be helpless despite the presence of thousands of law-enforcement officials.

Asked how the government would react in case of contempt proceedings were initiated over the failure to hold Punjab Assembly polls on May 14, he said: “Let it happen and we will see.”

Meanwhile, Climate Minister Rehman accused Mr Khan of prioritising his own interests over those of the state, government and citizens.

“No one is above Pakistan, despite Imran Niazi’s messaging of being above the state,” she told reporters in Islamabad. “Imran Khan Niazi neither believes in politics nor in the democratic process. His tactics boil down to a premeditated bonfire of violence and chaos.”

She said the PTI chief was once again targeting state institutions, with his latest target being the army chief, as Mr Khan seemed desperate to cut a bargain. “But this time, no one is going to adopt him except his current connections in the courts,” she said.

The climate minister also highlighted what she said were injustices in the legal system and pointed out contrasts between the treatment of Mr Khan and other political leaders.

In Sialkot, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also questioned the alleged facilitation provided to Mr Khan by courts, insisting that the “unprecedented relief” given to the PTI chief has dented the judiciary’s impartiality.

The judiciary should act according to the Constitution and law instead of personal liking and disliking, he said at a presser at his home on Saturday, the state-run APP news agency reported.

On violent protests, he said if the army and police had reacted to those incidents, the state would have suffered and Mr Khan’s “ulterior motives” would have been fulfilled.

Having Muslim President, VP, Senate President, Speaker Not Good for Nigeria’s Stability: Vice President-Elect

Kashim Shettima

----

Ahmed Oluwasanjo

MAY 13, 2023

Vice President-elect KashimShettima says having Muslims as president, vice president, senate president and speaker is not good for the country’s stability as it will validate the negative narrative of Islamisation agenda.

“What we are trying to avoid is a situation whereby the number one citizen, number two citizen, the number three citizen, and the number four citizen are all of the same faith. That will lend credence, validate the negative narrative of Islamization of Nigeria,” Mr Shettima said Friday in a meeting with elected House of Representatives members.

“This is why my principal, a fair-minded leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more inclined towards having the number three citizen from the South/south or the south-east. Even in the current circumstance that we find ourselves in, the stability of the nation is much more important than any other consideration. All other considerations have to be relegated to the background because we are talking about the stability of the nation,” he added.

Mr Shettima’s statement comes as the push for who becomes senate president and speaker of the 10th National Assembly continues with elected members scrambling for the positions.

Mr Shettima and his principal, Mr Tinubu, both Muslims, emerged winners of the February 25th presidential election, despite criticisms against same faith ticket.

Their emergence disrupted long-time political arrangement that has seen Muslims and Christians share leadership positions in the country.

In July 2022, before the presidential election, Peoples Gazette exclusively reported that the State Security Service in a secret memo to President Muhammadu Buhari warned that Mr Tinubu’s choice of vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 presidential election would trigger a sectarian crisis that could destabilise Nigeria.

Since February, a mysterious hacker group calling itself Anonymous Sudan has targeted dozens of Swedish airports, hospitals and banks with distributed denial-of-service attacks, ostensibly in response to the burning of a Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm earlier this year.

The so-called DDoS attacks, which push websites and services offline by overwhelming them with internet traffic, disrupted online programming at Sweden’s national public broadcaster and knocked out the websites of Scandinavian Airlines, state-owned power company Vattenfall, and defence firm Saab AB. Extensive media coverage has made the attacks — and A

Gaza Under Attack: Israel, Islamic Jihad Signal No Near-Term Truce

Early on Saturday, Palestinian fighters fired rockets from Gaza towards Israel in response to attacks by Israeli aircrafts on the fifth day of aggression on the coastal enclave.

The violence also spilled onto the occupied West Bank, where two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid on the outskirts of Nablus.

A new ceasefire proposal was circulated late on Friday by Egypt, which has been mediating between the two sides after a previous bid fell through, a Palestinian source has said.

A Palestinian official familiar with the truce talks described them as "complicated" and "tough" but confirmed that Cairo was pressing ahead with its efforts.

Allahabad HC Overturns District Court Order, Directs Carbon Dating Of ‘Shivling’ At GyanvapiMosque

By: Abhinav Singh

May 13, 2023

The Allahabad High Court on Friday set aside a lower court order and directed the authorities to conduct a 'scientific survey', including carbon dating of the ‘shivling’ (a sacred Hindu symbol of Lord Shiva) that was discovered last year at the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi during a videographic survey.

In October 2022, the Varanasi district court had rejected the demand for carbon dating the structure. However, Justice Arvind Kumar Mishra not only accepted the revision petition filed by Laxmi Devi and three others against the district court order but also directed the Varanasi district judge to proceed in accordance with the law on the application by Hindu worshippers.

"The district judge passed the order without any basis as it should have called for expert opinion from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on whether carbon dating of the shivling could be done without causing any harm. Therefore, the order should be quashed," argued Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain who appeared for the revisionists.

Breach of Azam Khan’s fortress gives NDA its 1st Muslim MLA in UP

May 14, 2023

LUCKNOW: BJP-led NDA got its first Muslim MLA in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday when Shafiq Ahmad Ansari of ally Apna Dal (S) defeated SP’s AnuradhaChaudhan in the byelectiontotheSuar assembly seat in Rampur, completing a final assault on disqualified MP Azam Khan’s fortress.

Anupriya Patel-led AD(S) also retained the Chhanbey reserved seat in Mirzapur district that fell vacant with the death of the incumbent, Rahul Kol, thisFebruary. The latter’s wife, RinkiKol, defeated Samajwadi Party’s KirtiKol by 9,587 votes.

The Suarbypoll was necessitated by Azam’s son Abdullah Azam being disqualified as an MLA following his conviction in a criminal case in February. The twin victories take the party’s tally in the assembly to 15 and NDA’s to 276. Akhilesh Yadav’s SP is down to 110.

‘Division’ In Muslim Votes Helps BJP Paint West U.P. Saffron

By S Raju

May 13, 2023

MEERUT As Muslim votes got divided among parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), BahujanSamaj Party (BSP), and All India Majlis-e-IttehadulMuslimeen (AIMIM), it got easy for the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to sweep the mayoral elections in the western part of Uttar Pradesh.

Taking everyone by surprise, AIMIM candidate Anas received 1,28,547 votes in Meerut, which was way more than 12,583 votes of Samajwadi Party candidate Seem Pradhan, who secured 1,15,964 votes. Meanwhile, BSP candidate Hasmat Ali received 54,076 votes. This division in votes of Muslims paved the way for a thumping victory of BJP candidate HarikantAhluwali, who received 2, 35 953 votes and defeated AIMIM’s candidate by a margin of 1,07,406 votes.

This division of Muslim votes took place despite a nine-km-long roadshow of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in the old city area. The division in Muslim votes was expected because party’s Muslim voters were annoyed with the decision of giving ticket to Seema Pradhan, who is a Gurjar. Notably, the city has only about 22,000-24,000 Gurjar voters.

A party leader, on the condition of anonymity, said that the city has more than four lakh Muslim voters and therefore, party’s city MLA Rafeeq Ansari had demanded ticket for his wife. However, the SP brass chose Seema. The SP leader added that Akhilesh Yadav was aware about the annoyance of Muslim leaders and therefore, he even visited the house of Ansari after his road show. Nevertheless, his efforts could not salvage the loss of Muslims votes in favour of AIMIM candidate Anas.

SCBA urges restraint as PDM gears up for sit-in

Nasir Iqbal

May 14, 2023

ISLAMABAD: As the ruling coalition goes ahead with its plan to stage a sit-in against the judiciary for allegedly favouring PTI chief Imran Khan, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has urged political parties to refrain from such a move.

And to pre-empt any untoward incident, the Supreme Court’s registrar, Ishrat Ali, on Saturday called a meeting of the Islamabad administration and police for a briefing on security arrangements.

The protest was announced by JUI-F chief MaulanaFazlurRehman, who also heads the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance, on Friday. The sit-in has been planned at Constitution Avenue in Islamabad, outside the Supreme Court building, on Monday, when the top court is set to start hearing an Election Commission’s petition seeking to revisit its verdict on the Punjab polls date.

In a statement, SCBA President Abid S. Zuberi and Secretary Muqtedir Akhtar Shabbir requested the ruling political parties not to hold the protest or take action that may undermine the integrity and functioning of the judiciary.

They also called upon the political stakeholders to reduce the political temperature in the best interest of the country’s progress.

Poliovirus found in another environmental sample from KP

Amin Ahmed

May 14, 2023

ISLAMABAD: While the Pakistan Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health confirmed the detection of wild poliovirus in an environmental sample from district South Waziristan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Islamic Development Bank approved a financing contribution of $100 million, inclusive of a $35 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to the fourth phase of polio eradication project in Pakistan.

According to the Pakistan Polio Lab, the wild poliovirus Type-1, which was isolated from a sewage sample collected from Qureshi Mohalla in the district’s WachaKhaura union council, was genetically linked to poliovirus found in sewage sample collected from the same district in September 2022.

Since three of the six positive samples detected in Pakistan this year belong to Afghanistan, officials believe there are 75pc chances of its spread from the neighbouring country where 22 environmental samples have been found positive, though both countries have reported one case each.

Talking to Dawn, National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) for Polio Eradication Coordinator Dr ShahzadBaig said: “As per genome sequencing three of six samples reported from Pakistan belonged to Afghan origin.” He believed there were only 25pc chances of local spread of virus in Pakistan, as there were 75pc chances the virus would spread from Afghanistan.

Tackle insurgency with dialogue, not kinetic approach, CITAD tells Tinubu

By Ezra Ukanwa

14-05-2023

THE Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD, has urged the Federal Government, FG, to opt for dialogue, rather than kinetic approach, as part of efforts to curb activities of Boko Haram in certain parts of the North East.

Executive Director of CITAD who is also a co-editor, Engr. Yunusa. ZakariYa’u, made the call while presenting a book, on Friday, in Abuja, titled Boko Haram: Community Perceptions of Dialogue and Reconciliation in Northern Nigeria.

While bemoaning the activities of Boko Haram insurgents in the country, he pointed out that the de-radicalisation of Boko Haram may not be effective, particularly seeing how the communities are not carried along.

SNP leader says Labour has become a ‘replica’ of the Tories

Tom Sanders

13 May 2023

Speaking at the Progressive Britain conference on Saturday, the Labour leader said he ‘didn’t care’ if he sounded conservative when committing to preserving ‘precious things in our way of life’.

Elsewhere in the speech, Sir Keir said the Tories ‘can no longer claim to be conservative’ and said they have ‘contempt for those who fly our flag’.

Starmer told the Blairite think tank that his party must go further than Tony Blair did when he re-wrote the so-called ‘Clause Four’ and rejected public ownership.

Tweeting after the speech, Humza Yousaf said: ‘This week, I accused Labour of being a pale imitation of the Tories, I was wrong, they are a replica.

Despite US pressure, Iran continues to engage in constructive cooperation with UN

by Sakina Fatima

13th May 2023

Tehran: Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, has said that despite political pressure from the United States to its allies, the Islamic Republic’s principled stance is to maintain constructive cooperation and contact with the UN Human Rights system, IRNA reported.

Kanaani made these remarks in response to an inquiry from IRNA over comments made by some American officials against the choice of an Iranian ambassador to serve as chair of the important Geneva Human Rights Forum in 2023.

Their comments are absurd, the spokesman said, adding that US officials should respect the appointment because it was done with backing from other nations and a majority of votes, as per IRNA.

The Shell-backed gas project poised to profit Iran

Tom Wilson

14-05-2023

An Iranian company is the biggest beneficiary of a power plant poised to supply a Shell-backed gas project in Iraq, showing the pervasive presence of Tehran’s business interests in its neighbour and putting the UK group at odds with the west’s shifting geopolitical priorities in the Middle East.

Basrah Gas Company, which is 44 per cent-owned by the London-listed energy major, will become a major consumer of power from Rumaila Independent Power Plant in southern Iraq when the gas company’s new facility starts operations in June.

The Rumaila plant is owned by Jordan-based Shamara Holding but was built by Tehran-based Mapna Group, which is entitled to 78 per cent of the revenue from electricity sales, according to documents seen by the Financial Times and three people involved in the contracts.

Shell’s joint venture, which has received World Bank funding, has been widely praised for its role capturing gas that was previously flared at Iraq’s oilfields and processing it for use in local power generation, cooking or export. Iraq’s state-owned South Gas Company owns 51 per cent of the project and Japanese trading house Mitsubishi owns 5 per cent.

Bangladesh medical tourists back, city hospitals see pre-Covid numbers

May 14, 2023

KOLKATA: Patients from Bangladesh have started streaming back to Kolkata's private hospitals, several of which now have more patients from the neighbouring country than they had before the pandemic. The numbers are set to swell further in the course of this month following a lull because of Eid celebrations last month, say hospitals.A number of these hospitals are gearing up to bolster their 'Bangladesh desk' and enhance their outpatients departments (OPD) to cater to the additional patient load from across the border.

At RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), the Bangladesh patient count has touched 15% of the total footfall, which is higher than the pre-pandemic number. Whereas RTIICS used to have 150 OPD patients from Bangladesh daily till early 2020, the count has now touched 200. Around 15 patients from the neighbouring country are now admitted. This figure, too, is higher than the pre-pandemic average of 10.

"This is the result of the pent-up demand due to the pandemic, when patient flow had stopped," said R Venkatesh, zonal head, Narayana Hospitals (RTIICS). "Visa requirements, too, have been eased, facilitating travel. We had seen a brief lull during Eid last month, but things are now back to normal. The Bangladesh patient count is the highest we have ever had. Going by the number of visa invitation letter applications and enquiries, the number is set to rise further."

RTIICS is planning to enhance its OPD rooms and area to cater to the overall increase in footfall. "The Bangladesh patient flow has necessitated this," added Venkatesh.

Umno in unity govt not a ‘forced marriage’, says Youth chief

14 May 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — Umno’s participation in the formation of the unity government after the 15th General Election (GE15) was not a ‘forced marriage’, as claimed by certain parties.

Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said that although some of the parties which form the government today have never established cooperation or had chemistry before, that is no reason not to create equality for the sake of the country.

“Some people say that we are in a forced marriage, but our parents, our grandparents, they didn’t even know each other when they got married, if people were in love for 10 years but the first year of marriage, the man was cheating, what is the point?
