An imam led a prayer in front of the vast building that was once a Greek Orthodox basilica, then a mosque and now a museum before crowds called for it to be restored as a Muslim place of worship.
“Let the chains break, open Hagia Sophia,” chanted the crowds who gathered on the plaza in front of the museum, according to Turkey’s Dogan news agency.
“In the name of thousands of our brothers we demand to be allowed to pray inside the Hagia Sophia mosque,” said Salih Turhan, the president of the Anatolia Youth Association which organised the demonstration coinciding with celebrations for the anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople.
Built in the sixth century, Hagia Sophia, which means Holy Wisdom in Greek, was converted to a mosque in 1453 when the Ottomans conquered what was then called Constantinople.
After the Ottoman Empire crumbled and modern secular Turkey was founded on its ruins, the mosque was transformed into a museum in 1935.
The edifice, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, features an immense dome supported by huge pillars, its walls sheathed with marble and decorated with mosaics.
After the city fell to the armies of Sultan Mehmet II The Conqueror, four minarets were added to the structure and the interior was decorated with Islamic art.

Iran to Miss Hajj, Alleges Saudi Arabia 'Blocking Path to Allah'

TEHRAN: Iran said on Sunday that its pilgrims will miss the pilgrimage this year because Saudi Arabia, custodian of Islam's holiest sites, was raising obstacles and "blocking the path to Allah" for its faithful.
The Iranian Hajj Organisation said, "Saudi Arabia is opposing the absolute right of Iranians to go on the hajj and is blocking the path leading to Allah."
The Saudi side had failed to respond to Iranian demands over "the security and respect" of its pilgrims to Mecca, of whom 60,000 took part in last year's hajj, the organisation said.
In the latest dispute between regional rivals Tehran and Riyadh, "after two series of negotiations without any results because of obstacles raised by the Saudis, Iranian pilgrims will unfortunately not be able to take part in the hajj" in September, Iran's Culture Minister Ali Jannati said.
Saudi officials have said an Iranian delegation wrapped up a visit to the kingdom on Friday without reaching a final agreement on arrangements for pilgrims from the Islamic republic.
The Saudi hajj ministry said it had offered "many solutions" to meet a string of demands made by the Iranians in two days of talks.
Agreement had been reached in some areas, including to use electronic visas which could be printed out by Iranian pilgrims, as Saudi diplomatic missions remain shut in Iran, it said.
It would be the first hajj in almost 30 years to take place without the participation of pilgrims from Iran.
Riyadh-Tehran ties were severed for four years after more than 400 people were killed in Mecca during clashes between Iranian pilgrims and Saudi security forces in 1987.
In January, relations were severed again after Iranian demonstrators torched Saudi Arabia's embassy and a consulate following the kingdom's execution of a prominent Shiite cleric.
Shiite Iran and predominantly Sunni Saudi Arabia are at odds over a raft of regional issues, notably the conflicts in Syria and Yemen in which they support opposing sides.
Earlier this month, Iran had accused its regional rival of seeking to "sabotage" the hajj, a pillar of Islam that devout Muslims must perform at least once during their lifetime if they are able.
Tehran said Riyadh had insisted that visas for Iranians be issued in a third country and would not allow pilgrims to be flown aboard Iranian aircraft.
But the Saudi hajj ministry said on Friday that Riyadh had agreed to allow Iranians to obtain visas through the Swiss embassy in Tehran, which has looked after Saudi interests since ties were severed in January.

Nuclear-armed Pakistan can 'target' Delhi in 5 minutes: Abdul Qadeer Khan

ISLAMABAD: Nuclear-armed Pakistan has the ability to "target" the Indian capital Delhi in five minutes, the father of Pakistan's nuclear programme Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has said.
Addressing a gathering here on the 18th anniversary of Pakistan's first nuclear tests, which were carried out under his supervision in 1998, Khan, said Pakistan could have become a nuclear power as early as 1984 but the then President General Zia ul Haq "opposed the move".
The 80-year-old nuclear physicist said General Zia, who was Pakistan's President from 1978 to 1988, opposed the nuclear testing as he believed that the world would intervene militarily.
Further, it would have also curtailed international aid Pakistan was receiving due to the ongoing Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
"We were able and we had a plan to launch nuclear test in 1984. But President General Zia ul Haq had opposed the move," Khan said on Saturday.
Khan also said that Pakistan has the ability to "target" Delhi from Kahuta near Rawalpindi in five minutes.
Kahuta is the home to the Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL), Pakistan's key uranium enrichment facility, linked to the atomic bomb project.
Khan was disgraced in 2004 when he was forced to accept responsibility for nuclear technology proliferation and was forced to live a life of official house arrest. In 2009, the Islamabad high court declared Khan to be a free citizen of Pakistan, allowing him free movement inside the country.
He regretted the treatment and said Pakistan would never have achieved the feat of becoming first Muslim nuclear country without his "services".
"Without my services Pakistan would never have been the first Muslim nuclear nation. We were able to achieve the capability under very tough circumstances, but we did it," said Khan.
Referring to the treatment meted out to him during Gen Pervez Musharraf's era, Khan said nuclear scientists in the country have not been given the respect that they deserve.
"We are facing the worst against our services to the country's nuclear programme," he added.

Clashes between ISIL, Syria rebels kill dozens near Turkey: Monitor

Fighting between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Syrian rebels near the Turkish border has killed dozens of people in the last two days, as ISIL militants keep up an offensive that has led to rapid territorial gains, a monitoring group said on May 28.
Fighters from the militant group entered the rebel-held town of Marea early on May 28, using at least two car bombs in the assault, and clashes continued later in the day, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
An advance by the jihadists on May 27 that cut Marea off from another key insurgent-held town, Azaz, was their biggest territorial gain in the northern province of Aleppo for two years, the Observatory said.

Turkey, coalition planes hit ISIL targets in Syria

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and U.S.-led coalition planes have hit Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) targets in Syria, Anadolu Agency reported on May 29.
Some 40 militants were killed and four Katyusha rocket firing positions, four vehicles, two armored personnel carriers and two ammunition depots were destroyed in the operations.
The targets were determined by the TSK after two rockets fired from Syria hit the Oğuzeli district of the southeastern province of Gaziantep around 10:45 a.m. on May 28.
The Turkish army fired howitzers from across the border at the ISIL targets, while coalition planes carried out three airstrikes.

Ankara-Washington Gaps Widening over Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Photos released by the local and European media showing the US soldiers wearing patches of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Raqqa battlefields have caused serious rifts between the US and its NATO ally Turkey over the US army's direct support for the Kurdish fighters in Syria, reports said.
The Turkish officials have on many occasions opposed any form of the US army's direct support for the YPG fighters in their battle against the ISIL in Syria.
"I condemn the US army's supports for the YPG. Our allies and friends in NATO should not engage their forces in the Syrian crisis or wear the batches of the YPG fighters," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in the Kurdish-populated regions South of Turkey.
The AFP also released the photos of the US soldiers wearing the YPG patches in Raqqa battlefields.

Turkey commemorates victims of xenophobic 1993 Solingen arson attack

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has commemorated the victims of the tragic Solingen arson attack, one of the most violent neo-Nazi attacks targeting Turks in Germany which killed three girls and two women in 1993.
“Hereby, we would like to emphasize one more time our concerns over rising racism, xenophobia and hatred against Islam in Europe recently,” the ministry said in a statement on May 29, expressing concern over the rise of inimical moves which could lead to a repetition of such violent incidents.

Turkish President Erdoğan slams US over YPG support

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has criticized the United States after photos of U.S. special operations forces wearing Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Unit (YPG) insignia on their shoulders during an assault on Syria’s Raqqa emerged.
"This is not what was promised to us,” Erdoğan said on May 28 speaking at a ceremony in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.
“I am someone who believes that politics should be conducted honestly. Therefore, our allies, those who are with us in NATO, cannot and should not send their own soldiers to Syria, with insignias of the YPG," said Erdoğan.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has said his government will never give up to terrorism.
"The PKK [Kurdistan Workers' Party] terrorists don't have any concern about Kurdish issues. Anbar Province: Iraqi Forces Kill 110 ISIL Terrorists Near Fallujah City

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iraqi army and volunteer forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) continued their advances in Anbar province, killing tens of Takfiri terrorists near the city of Fallujah on Sunday.
At least 110 ISIL terrorists were killed in the offensive of Iraqi joint forces in Northern al-Karmah to the Northeast of Fallujah city.
Al-Karmah is an important and strategic city near Fallujah and is considered as an entrance gate to the city of Fallujah. It is located 16 kilometers to the Northeast of Fallujah.

700 migrants feared dead in Mediterranean shipwrecks

POZZALLO: The United Nations refugee agency says over 700 migrants may have drowned in Mediterranean Sea shipwrecks south of Italy in the last few days as they tried to reach Europe. Carlotta Sami, spokeswoman for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, told AP by phone on Sunday that an estimated 100 people are missing from a smugglers' boat that capsized on Wednesday.

Documents Reveal more Information about Infiltration of over 6,000 Foreign Terrorists into Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- New documents by a human rights watch disclosed that a Syrian-Saudi man has been the mastermind behind the infiltration of over 6,000 terrorists from the European countries into Syria.
"Tarrad Mohammad al-Jarba, originally a Syrian who later obtained Saudi nationality, has been an ISIL commander in charge of recruitment of fresh forces from the European countries and transferring them to the battlefields in Syria," documents by the watch said.
"Tarrad was in Saudi jails for at least four years. He further scaped the jail and went to Syria to join the ISIL," the documents went on to say.

Iran arrests eight for ‘obscene’ music videos

TEHRAN: Iran has arrested eight people involved in producing “obscene” music videos, Tehran prosecutor general Abbas Jafarabadi told the judiciary’s news agency Mizan Online on Saturday.
“Eight people producing obscene music videos, whose clips were broadcast on a famous anti-revolutionary television channel, were arrested in Tehran last week,” he said.
Their charges will be reviewed by the special court of culture and media, he added.
The arrests come only days after more than 30 students who partied at a graduation ceremony in northern Iran were arrested and given 99 lashes each for violating the Islamic republic’s morality code.

In Saturday's press release the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria reported that the Islamic State terror group (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has retaken five villages in the vicinity of Azaz in northwestern Syria, roughly 20 miles of the city of Aleppo.
“Militants of the Daesh terrorist organization carried out the attack on the Free Syrian Army positions near the town of Azaz, Aleppo province and established control over [several] settlements,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a daily bulletin. The statement added that the terrorist advances were halted by the Kurdish militia in the vicinity of Ain Dakna.

Hezbollah Smashes Terrorists near Lebanon-Syrian Border

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Lebanese Hezbollah Resistance Movement's fighters, in a fresh round of offensives, targeted the ISIL gatherings in the Eastern part of the country near the border with Syria, inflicting a heavy death toll on the terrorists.
Hezbollah fighters stormed the ISIL strongholds near Baalbek, which claimed the lives of at least 11 militants.
In the meantime, the ISIL hit al-Nusra Front's positions at Jaroud Fankous border-crossing in Qalamoun mountain, which ended in the killing of eights Takfiri militants and wounding of several more and destroyed their armed vehicles too.

Iraq elite forces take position around Fallujah

Baghdad, May 28, 2016 (AFP) -Iraq's counter-terrorism forces deployed on the edge of Fallujah Saturday for the first time since an operation was launched to retake the jihadist-held city, top commanders said.
The counter-terrorism service (CTS), Iraq's best-trained and most battle-tested fighting unit, moved into position on the boundaries of Fallujah, a bastion of the Islamic State group.

Informed Sources: Al-Nusra Responsible for Recent Bomb Attacks in Syria's Lattakia

TEHRAN (FNA)- Informed sources announced on Sunday that the bomb explosions in the towns of Tartous and Jableh in the coastal province of Lattakia which claimed the lives of over 150 people last Monday were done by the al-Nusra Front, a leading terrorist group in Jeish al-Fatah coalition.
"The al-Nusra-led Jeish al-Fatah, established by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey in 2014, carried out the bloody bomb blasts in Lattakia," local Syrian sources told al-Watan paper.
In the meantime, several sources in the villages of Hama province confirmed that such huge bomb blasts can be done only by al-Nusra Front, which leads Jeish al-Fatah.

TEHRAN: Iran has set a one-year deadline for foreign social media to hand over data on their Iranian users, state news agency IRNA said Sunday.

TEHRAN (FNA)- A Syrian political activist raised sexual harassment and extortion charges against former president of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) Ahmad al-Jarba when she was his secretary in the Turkish city of Istanbul.
Lina Samoudi wrote on her Facebook page that she came to know al-Jarba when she was looking for a job in Istanbul, adding, "After I was employed by al-Jarba as secretary for 1,000 Turkish liras per month, I was short of money and when I asked for an extra $100 from my employer (al-Jarba) he gave the cash to me, but he did not let me leave the office after the office hour and he started harassing me."
Samoudi reiterated that she did not know al-jarba before meeting him at his office in Istanbul, the Arabic-language Owqat al-Sham news website reported.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Hashd al-Shaabi (volunteer forces) Commander Abu Mehdi al-Mohandes underlined that Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani went to Iraq to help the country in campaign against terrorism after receiving Baghdad's rigid request.
"The Iranian advisors, headed by dear brother Qassem Soleimani, have been beside us since the start of war and his presence has happened upon the demand of the Iraqi government and agreement of the Armed Forces' top commander," Mohandes said in an interview with Iraq's Sumeria news channel on Sunday.
He, meantime, said that the Iraqi nation is able to kick the terrorists out of Iraq with the possibilities in their hands now, adding that Hashd al-Shaabi doesn’t have any political plan and merely supports the political process.

ISLAMABAD: Nuclear-armed Pakistan has the ability to "target" the Indian capital Delhi in five minutes, the father of Pakistan's nuclear programme Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has said.
Addressing a gathering here on the 18th anniversary of Pakistan's first nuclear tests, which were carried out under his supervision in 1998, Khan, said Pakistan could have become a nuclear power as early as 1984 but the then President General Zia ul Haq "opposed the move".
The 80-year-old nuclear physicist said General Zia, who was Pakistan's President from 1978 to 1988, opposed the nuclear testing as he believed that the world would intervene militarily.

Two people killed, six others injured in separate attacks of violence in Balochistan

QUETTA: Six people, including two women and a child, were injured in a hand grenade attack in Balochistan's Chaman area, a town near the Pak-Afghan border, on Sunday.
Police said miscreants lobbed a hand grenade at a house in Chaman Bazaar. The motive behind the attack is unknown.
The injured were rushed to Civil Hospital Chaman for treatment.

Military leadership was unaware of US drone strike, says Fatemi

KARACHI: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi said Pakistani military leadership was 'unaware' of the United States (US) drone attack in Balochistan which killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour, but also rejected the possibility of an intelligence failure in this regard.
“Pakistan does not have the technological means to detect drones,” the special assistant argued in an interview with DawnNews on Friday.
"There are certain domestic and international elements involved,” he claimed, “But some matters cannot be disclosed.”

'Terrorist attempt' thwarted as two suspected militants arrested in KP

RAWALPINDI: Security forces averted a 'terrorist attempt' by arresting two suspected militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Sunday.
The arrests were made during two intelligence-based operations in the villages of Karebai Oghi and Charangada near Mansehra, an ISPR statement said.
A 20 kilogram pressure cooker Improvised Explosive Device, hand grenades, pistols, an AK-47 rifle and rockets were recovered from the suspects, ISPR said.

Rushdie's tryst with Islam's conservative, oppressive practitioners is often held up as evidence of how illiberal some Muslims can be. In 1989, Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini advertised that whoever manages to kill Rushdie will be rewarded handsomely.
The writer has never minced words on how so called religious people try committing the worst atrocities in the name of Islam. Recently, he appeared in a video where he weighed in on the subject of calling one strain of terrorism as 'Islamic terror'.
It has been argued for a while that while talking and writing about terrorism, it is perhaps unnecessary to call terror attacks inflict by Muslim terrorists 'Islamic terrorism'. Calling terrorism 'Islamic' undermines the religion's truest values, which doesn't promote violence and murder, like any other religion. It has been said that the terrorists choose to contort and abuse the idea of the religion and by no means should their actions be legitimised by associating them with the word Islam in sensible public discourses. That is why, many publications, columnists and commentators choose to call 'Islamic State' Daesh - an Arabic word which means 'a group of bigots who impose their will on others'.

OSVE, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AFP) - Two veiled women work the land while a man collects eggs in a bucolic Bosnian village - now notorious for exporting fighters to Syria.
"This is how we finance terrorism," joked 50-year old Izet Hadzic as he opened his henhouse in Osve, which overlooks a peaceful valley in the Balkan country's north.
A grey-bearded former rock musician, Hadzic founded this "dzemat" (religious community) in the late 2000s - one of dozens in Bosnia that refuse to comply with the country's official Muslim leaders.
Police and religious authorities are now trying to crack down on these rebel communities and bring them back into the official fold, amid fears they are nurturing extremism.
Osve made international headlines last year as an alleged Islamic State (ISIS) "stronghold", and Hadzic says two large families have left the village for jihad in the Middle East, among the 300 or so Bosnians to do so.

At least ten Taliban commanders were killed in an airstrike in northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Sunday.
The airstrike was carried out in Baghlan-e-Markazi district where the Taliban insurgents are actively operating.
According to MoD, the airstrike targeted a gathering of the Taliban insurgents in the vicinity of the district, leaving ten of their commanders dead and another one seriously wounded.

ISIS commander among 6 killed in Nangarhar drone strike

A commander of the loyalists of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group has been killed along with his 5 militants in an airstrike in eastern Nangarhar province.

Taliban shadow governor and military commission chief killed in Uruzgan

At least 9 Taliban militants including the group’s two top leaders were killed during separate clashes with the Afghan security forces in southern Uruzgan province.
The 205th Atal Corps of the Afghan National Army said the group’s shadow governor Mawlavi Jan Agha and military commission chief Asadullah were among those killed.

Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government threw its support in parliament this week behind an Islamic penal code that includes amputations and stoning, shocking some of his allies and stoking fears of further strains in the multi-ethnic country.
Critics believe the scandal-tainted prime minister is using “hudud”, the Islamic law, to shore up the backing of Muslim Malay voters and fend off attacks on his leadership ahead of critical by-elections next month and a general election in 2018.
The government on Thursday unexpectedly submitted to parliament a hudud bill that had been proposed by the Islamist group Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS).
Although debate on the law was deferred to October by PAS leader Abdul Hadi Awang, its submission to parliament brought criticism from leaders across the political spectrum, including allies of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, who represent the ethnic Chinese and Indian communities.

MISRATA, Libya: Forces loyal to Libya's U.N.-backed unity government say they aim to encircle Sirte, Islamic State's stronghold in Libya, having moved to within 15 km (10 miles) of the city centre.
The forces, composed of fighters mostly from the western city of Misrata, are now closer to Sirte than they have been for nearly a year. Last summer Misrata brigades withdrew from Sirte and Islamic State took full control there.
Western states are hoping the unity government can bring together Libya's competing factions to defeat Islamic State, though the new government has struggled to secure support beyond its power base in the west of the country.

US-led coalition troops seen near front line in new Iraq offensive

HASSAN SHAMI, Iraq: Servicemen from the U.S.-led coalition were seen near the front line of a new offensive in northern Iraq launched on Sunday by Kurdish peshmerga forces that aims to retake a handful of villages from Islamic State east of their Mosul stronghold.
A Reuters correspondent saw the soldiers loading armored vehicles outside the village of Hassan Shami, a few miles east of the frontline. They told people present not to take photographs.
They spoke in English but their nationality was not clear. Reuters had earlier reported that they were American but this could not be confirmed officially.
Commenting on the ground deployment of coalition soldiers seen near the battle front, Baghdad-based spokesman for then coalition, U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren, said: "U.S. and coalition forces are conducting advise and assist operations to help Kurdish Peshmerga forces".

PARIS – Speaking in the lilting accent of southern France, a girl in government ads describes how she was recruited by Islamic State extremists during her quest for religion, then was encouraged to quit school and go to Syria and finally to plot a suicide attack against a synagogue at home.
“I have a hard time even admitting now that I was indoctrinated,” she says to the camera in the ad before breaking down, describing how she tried to recruit others.
The teen, known as Lea, was meant to be the poster child of a nascent program in France aimed at de-radicalizing young people to stem their flow to Syria.
But the jihadi rehab didn’t work. Six times she reconnected with the extremists, and six times she called her counselor in tears to apologize.
The seventh time, late in 2015, landed her in jail.

WASHINGTON: Pakistan got some respite from relentless American pressure on the diplomatic front with a personal gesture of support from First Lady Michelle Obama, who made a rare social visit to the Pakistani Embassy in Washington on Friday.
Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S Jalil Abbas Jilani broke the news on social media by posting a photograph of himself and his wife with the First Lady, with a message that read: ''It was an absolute delight hosting FLOTUS at Pakistan House today.''
A second photo appeared to show his family, including two sons, with the First Lady.
Jillani later deleted both tweets and photos but by then they had been widely distributed in the media, particularly in Pakistan.

"Based on specific information, the Rashtriya Rifles battalion at Samote, along with troops of Territorial Army and police personnel, seized a large cache of arms and ammunition from a hideout in Khangar Forest of Rajouri district," Udhampur-based Defence Spokesman Col S D Goswami said.
