Muslim residents in Delhi's Uttam Nagar plan to leave for Eid over ‘threats’

Several Muslim families living in Uttam Nagar’s Hastsal village, who HT spoke to on Tuesday, said they were planning to leave the locality until the situation normalises, ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival this weekend. They said that communal tensions and threats made by religious groups over the murder of a 26-year-old man in a fight between two families from different communities on the festival of Holi have left them fearful.

The Delhi Police, meanwhile, said they are holding meetings with residents and that nobody they spoke to shared such plans.

Jameel Ahmad, 55, owner of Miya Ji restaurant, said he and his family have lived in Uttam Nagar for more than 50 years. “I have three children and seven grandchildren. We are all scared because we have seenleaders say they will play ‘Khoon Ki Holi’. We have nowhere to go.”

The initial clashes occurred on March 4 when an 11-year-old girl threw a water balloon that hit a Muslim woman, triggering an altercation. Tarun Kumar, 26, succumbed to injuries four days later. Police have arrested 14 people and apprehended two minors in connection with the case. Around two weeks later, tensions between the two communities continue to simmer, as threats continue to pour in on social media too, besides protests and provocative speeches that have become a daily staple here, residents alleged.

Ahmad said, “Religious leaders who visited during some condolence meetings threatened us. The murder is not a communal matter. They have always fought with each other. I am scared that all of us will pay the price for their (accused’s) mistakes. We are living in peace, but outsiders are threatening us. We see videos and they are scary. My children keep telling me that we need to leave for Eid. Two families who live near our house on rent have already left,” he said.

Twenty-two-year-old Farzana, another resident, who goes by a single name, said, “I have been living here for more than 20 years, but it’s strange when your neighbours don’t talk nicely to you. We don’t want to leave but Eid is special for us and we can’t stay here. There are threats of violence and attacks every day. We don’t support violence and have nothing to do with the case. We are thinking of leaving for a few days only.”

Another resident, Bilal Rajput, 47, who is an advocate and whose family has been living in the area since the 1970s, said, “My neighbour, who my family has known for over 50 years, told me that two of his tenants left. I also know of a shopkeeper who left. While we are not planning to leave, we can’t also deny that there are no problems.”

He said, “There are protests outside the metro station, parks and other public spaces. There are barricades everywhere. Another neighbour, who’s a Hindu, told me to stay safe because even he is scared. We are all living in fear.”

Delhi Police said they have made adequate arrangements and have also held meetings.

Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka), Kushal Pal Singh, appealed to residents to remain in the area and assured of adequate safety arrangements for the festival.

“We have sent more than 22 requests to X and Instagram platform to take down provocative speeches and videos. Meta has already taken down a lot of content. We are also contacting the creators who posted these. Almost all of them are from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other states. No local is involved. We have held peace meetings and ensured people from both communities that there will be no violence,” he said.

Iran launches barrage of missiles after Israel kills 2 of its top officials

March 18, 2026

-------------

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Israel killed two senior Iranian security officials in a major blow to the Islamic Republic’s leadership as it faces its greatest test in decades, and Iran responded Wednesday with renewed missile and drone attacks on its Gulf Arab neighbors and Israel.

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was considered one of the most powerful figures in the country since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on the first day of the war. Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani was the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s all-volunteer Basij.

Iran confirmed the killings of both men, who were key to Iran’s violent crackdown on protests in January that challenged the theocracy’s 47-year rule.

Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward Israel on Wednesday as sirens sounded across the central part of the country and loud explosions were heard in Tel Aviv. Israel’s medical service, Magen David Adom, said two people were killed in Ramat Gan, a district east of Tel Aviv.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other Arab states also faced barrages of Iranian-fired missiles and drones Wednesday that were intercepted by air defense systems.

With concerns growing about a global energy crisis, an Iranian official said Tehran had no intention of relinquishing its tight grip on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for oil.

President Donald Trump said NATO and most other allies have rejected his calls to help secure the strait.

Israel says killings are to undermine Iranian regime

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Tuesday that Larijani and Soleimani “were eliminated” in strikes overnight. The Israeli military said it also struck more than 10 Basij posts across Tehran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the killings were aimed at “undermining this regime to give the Iranian people the opportunity to remove it.” But there have been no signs of anti-government protests since the war began, as many Iranians shelter from the American and Israeli strikes.

The Iranian judiciary’s news agency, Mizan, quoted the Revolutionary Guard as confirming the killing of Soleimani. Other Iranian state media confirmed Larijani’s death.

Larijani, a former parliamentary speaker, was a senior policy adviser to the late Khamenei on strategy in nuclear talks with the Trump administration. He was sanctioned by the US Treasury in January for his role “coordinating” Iran’s violent suppression of nationwide protests.

Soleimani was also sanctioned by the US, the European Union and other nations, over his role in suppressing dissent for years through the Basij.

The killings of the top officials came on the eve of “Chaharshanbe Souri,” or the Festival of Fire, shortly before the Persian new year. Authorities have sent threatening text messages telling the public not to turn out for the festival, warning the celebrations could be used by “rioters.”

Iranian strikes pressure neighbors and oil markets

In the United Arab Emirates, explosions rang out early Wednesday morning in Dubai, followed by a missile alert. The government’s Dubai Media Office said “the sounds heard across parts of the city” were the successful interceptions by air defense operations.

Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported, is sparking concerns about tightening energy supplies — unnerving the world economy.

A few ships have crossed through the strait, and Iran has said the waterway technically remains open — just not for the United States, Israel and their allies. About 20 vessels have been struck.

US Central Command said Tuesday the US military has fired multiple 5,000-pound deep penetrator bombs on Iranian missile sites along Iran’s coastline near the Strait of Hormuz that were posing a risk to international shipping.

With oil prices rising, Trump has demanded that roughly a half-dozen countries send warships to ensure ships can pass through the strait but said he has not gotten any support.

The European Union’s top diplomat said the 27-nation bloc does not want to be dragged into the conflict with Iran. “This is not Europe’s war,” Kaja Kallas told EU lawmakers Tuesday. “We were not consulted.”

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday it received a report from Iran that its Bushehr nuclear power plant complex had been hit by a projectile but there were no injuries and the plant suffered no damage. It reiterated the call by IAEA’s leader, Rafael Mariano Grossi, “for maximum restraint during the conflict to prevent risk of a nuclear accident.”

Renewed Israeli strikes in Lebanon

The Israeli military continued its strikes on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

A strike in the Nabatiyeh district killed three people and wounded another, Lebanon’s health ministry said Wednesday. Rescue teams were searching for eight missing people, it said.

Israel’s strikes have displaced more than 1 million Lebanese — roughly 20 percent of the population — according to the Lebanese government, which says 912 people have been killed. In Israel, 14 people have been killed by Iranian missile fire. At least 13 US military members have been killed.

More than 1,300 people have been killed in Iran since the conflict started Feb. 28, according to the Iranian Red Crescent.

Saudi Arabia hosts Arab, Islamic foreign ministers for emergency talks on regional security

---------

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is hosting an emergency gathering of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers in Riyadh on Wednesday to discuss ways to bolster regional security and stability, the Kingdom's Foreign Ministry announced.

The ministry said the meeting aims to deepen consultation and coordination among member states on how best to support peace and stability across the region.

The talks come against a backdrop of sharply escalating tensions across the Middle East. Following a joint US-Israeli strike on Iran on February 28, Tehran launched successive waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf states, Israel, and American assets across the region — plunging the Middle East into its deepest security crisis in years. Gulf airports, including major cargo hubs in Dubai and Doha, have faced repeated closures due to Iranian strikes, disrupting trade, travel, and the flow of critical medical supplies.

The announcement follows a flurry of diplomatic phone calls on Tuesday, with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan reaching out to his counterparts in Syria, Algeria, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, and the UAE.

Wednesday’s gathering represents a collective Arab and Islamic effort to contain the fallout and chart a path toward de-escalation before the crisis deepens further.

Is offending Muslims an inalienable right of the British people?

Nadeine Asbali

17 Mar, 2026

The national pastime of the elite and powerful, to be able to criticise Islam without reproof, is almost always cloaked in the language of counter-terrorism, writes Nadeine Asbali. [GETTY]

--------------

Last week, Labour finally revealed its long-awaited definition of Islamophobia, which incidentally, it is now terming ‘anti-Muslim hate’.

Some Muslims have welcomed the shift from the term ‘islamophobia’, which pathologises discrimination against Muslims as a justifiable fear. Others have accused the government of watering down the issue with vague language that does not parallel terms like ‘antisemitism’ or ‘homophobia’ that are used to protect other groups.

Of course, some controversy was inevitable. However, what has developed is a wave of right-wing hysteria about the perceived right to criticise Islam being taken away (even though, spoiler alert, it hasn’t). In fact, take even a brief glance at the media coverage of this new definition, and you’d be forgiven for thinking the Labour Party had demanded the entire country become Muslim.

With nuance and humanity completely out the window, sensationalist tabloid headlines have whipped up a culture-war-frenzy, warning in angry capital letters about this de facto blasphemy law that has now, apparently, been smuggled into British law.

Hysteria about a definition of Islamophobia supposedly ‘curbing free speech’ has been aplenty. Angry, white columnists whose entire careers have been made on the backs of incendiary remarks about Muslims have dedicated yet more column inches to accusing the government of undermining their God-given right to criticise Islam.

But that’s the point.

Right-wing Britons who already despise Muslims and detest immigration love to behave as though the right to criticise and offend is somehow paramount - and that any threat to that is a dereliction of the sacred covenant of being British.

But have we ever really paused to consider what this truly means? Why is it necessary to offend others? Or is it more about defending the status quo that allows Islam to be scrutinised, hyper policed, and surveilled under the guise of anti-terror measures?

The national pastime of the elite and powerful, to be able to criticise Islam without reproof, is almost always cloaked in the language of counter-terrorism. Politicians and supposed ‘tsars’ with expertise in countering extremism have soberly warned that daring to enshrine any protection for Muslims in law will amount to supporting Islamism.

Aside from the overtly racialised way that terrorism is mainly associated with Islam, we also mostly hear this argument about those who commit violent acts when perpetrators are Muslim.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a tabloid headline decrying the threat of Judaism on the West in response to Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. I don’t recall the government relying on its legal definition of antisemitism in order to safeguard the British right to criticise Israel or to curb the threat of British IDF soldiers returning to Britain without reckoning after murdering and maiming in the name of a foreign state.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a right-wing columnist decisively claim that Hindutva ideology is the biggest threat facing the UK today.

I don’t remember these instances because they don’t happen.

How convenient, then, that suddenly the blue-blooded British desire to offend disappears when we’re talking about groups who uphold rather than challenge the status quo.

What’s more, why does the hypothetical right of someone to criticise my faith come above my safety as a visibly Muslim woman in Britain?

Because petty politics aside, that’s what we are talking about here. The term ‘anti-Muslim hate’ might sound like nothing more than playground bickering, but what this ambiguous language obscures is that this is about a real, active - and growing - danger posed towards Muslims.

Islamophobia is at an all-time high - it is now the ‘most dangerous time in Britain to be Muslim’. Islamophobic assaults surged by 73% in 2024, and during the last few summers, we witnessed a blaze of anti-migrant hatred aimed at Muslims ignite across the country, with mosques, halal restaurants and hotels housing predominantly Muslim asylum seekers attacked.

Our politicians make no efforts to obscure their blatant Islamophobia, and our national news broadcasters peddle dehumanising rhetoric about us. Just a few days ago, in South-East London, a visibly Muslim woman in a hijab was mowed down by a car in a targeted hit-and-run attack as she left her local mosque.

When this is the climate of distilled, manufactured islamophobia that we are seeing, why is it then that the country seems more concerned about the right to offend? A formal definition could protect Muslims from being assaulted or even killed in the street, yet the media is obsessing over what this will mean for ‘free speech’.

The answer, of course, has been long on the wall for Muslims in the UK. It comes down to the fact that nothing, not our passports, not our accents, not our achievements or our frames of reference, will ever make Muslims equal in a country that demands absolute acquiescence to the state above all else.

The reason our safety comes second to someone’s right to critique and poke fun is because that is exactly where we sit on the pecking order in this nation, despite us calling it home.

These hysterical tabloid headlines lamenting the loss of free speech and accusing Labour of ushering in a blasphemy law via the back door reveal the racist double-standard sitting at the rotting heart of British democracy.

Despite what we are told, we are not all equal. For some, like Muslims, our right to exist safely and openly is a mere afterthought to the one and only true British value: maintaining an imperialistic, divisive agenda at all costs.

'We don't need help!' Trump explodes after Nato, other nations refuse to take part in Iran war

Mar 17, 2026

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that America does not require support from its allies as it continues military operations against Iran, declaring that it is "by far the most powerful country anywhere in the world and they do not need the help of anyone!"

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said several Nato allies had declined to participate in the US-led military campaign.

"The United States has been informed by most of our Nato 'allies' that they don’t want to get involved with our Military Operation against the Terrorist Regime of Iran, in the Middle East, this, despite the fact that almost every Country strongly agreed with what we are doing, and that Iran cannot, in any way, shape, or form, be allowed to have a Nuclear Weapon," he wrote.

"I am not surprised by their action, however, because I always considered NATO, where we spend Hundreds of Billions of Dollars per year protecting these same Countries, to be a one way street — We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us, in particular, in a time of need," he added.

The US President also claimed significant military success against Iran.

"Fortunately, we have decimated Iran’s military their navy is gone, their air force is gone, their anti-aircraft and radar is gone and perhaps, most importantly, their leaders at virtually every level, are gone never to threaten us, our Middle Eastern allies, or the world, again!"

He said that given these developments, US reliance on allies was no longer necessary. "Because of the fact that we have had such military success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the Nato Countries’ assistance, we never did! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the world, we do not need the help of anyone!"

Trump's remarks come amid visible strain in Washington’s ties with its allies after several countries responded cautiously or declined his call to deploy warships to escort merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier on Monday, Trump urged allies to help secure the crucial waterway, which carries roughly a fifth of global crude oil supply.

"We strongly encourage the other nations to get involved with us and get involved quickly and with great enthusiasm," he told reporters at a White House event.

However, key allies signalled reluctance to participate in any military mission. Canada said it had not been consulted on the US-Israeli strikes that triggered the conflict and would not take part in offensive operations.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said London was working with partners on a "viable" plan to reopen the strait but ruled out a Nato-led mission, while Germany reiterated that the conflict was "not a matter for Nato."

Other countries, including Japan, Australia, Poland, Spain, Greece and Sweden, have also distanced themselves from potential military involvement.

European Union foreign ministers, meeting in Brussels, showed "no appetite" to expand their existing naval operations to the Gulf, according to the bloc’s top diplomat.

The standoff comes as global oil prices have surged between 40% and 50% following Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and waves of missile and drone strikes across the Gulf, in retaliation for the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28.

Trump warned that a lack of support could have long-term implications for the alliance, telling the Financial Times that it would be "very bad for the future of Nato" if allies refused to step in.

Residents of Nigeria's Maiduguri on high alert after coordinated explosions kill 23

March 18, 2026

Coordinated blasts by suspected suicide bombers tore through a busy market and other areas in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri, killing at least 23 people and wounding more than 100 others, in one of the worst recent attacks on the capital of Borno state.

Three blasts detonated Monday evening just after people in the Muslim-majority city broke their Ramadan fasts, striking a main market, the entrance of Maiduguri's largest teaching hospital and a post office axis.

The military blamed the blasts in the city of around 1.2 million people on suspected Boko Haram militants and warned of "an increased threat" of suicide attacks in the final days of the holy month of Ramadan.

It came after an attack on a military post overnight Sunday to Monday, which authorities blamed on suspected jihadists, and as President Bola Tinubu was preparing for a state visit to the United Kingdom, where security is expected to be on the agenda.

Tinubu ordered the country's security chiefs "to move to Maiduguri to take charge of the situation."

Witnesses described panic as people fled an initial explosion at the market towards an exit that passes through the post office area, where minutes later another blast hit.

Survivor Mala Mohammed, 31, told AFP that many people "ran toward the post office area because the market entrance and the post office are not far apart. Unfortunately, as they were running towards post office, the person who had the explosive device ran into the crowd while people were still trying to escape."

Combined with the attack on the military position and a mosque bombing in December, the assaults have wrecked a peaceful stretch in the city, which had become a relative oasis of calm as Nigeria's long-running insurgency was pushed to the rural hinterlands.

Maiduguri is the town where Boko Haram originated, home to its initial uprising in 2009 which became a bloody campaign to establish a caliphate in the country.

Violence has slowed from its peak around 2015 but fighters from Boko Haram and rival jihadist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have recently stepped up attacks in northeastern Nigeria.

Their campaign has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced around two million.

Despite improved security within Maiduguri, "the city has always been vulnerable," Confidence McHarry, a conflict analyst with Lagos-based SBM Intelligence, told AFP, noting that countryside attacks have continued, often just a few kilometres from town.

The military's attention has recently been focused on ISWAP, said McHarry, yet Boko Haram "still has cells" around Maiduguri and the attacks show "they're still a force to be reckoned with."

Police put the toll at 23 dead and 108 wounded. An anti-jihadist militia member told AFP the death toll from the explosions could be as high as 31.

An AFP reporter at a city hospital on Monday evening saw dozens of wounded people seeking treatment, as well as bodies covered by sheets on the pavement outside.

'Barbaric' attacks

Police said that "normalcy has been fully restored in the affected areas" and that security forces have increased their "presence and surveillance across Maiduguri and its environs to prevent any further occurrences."

Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum called the apparent bombings "barbaric" and said "the recent surge in attacks is not unconnected with intense military operations in the Sambisa forest," a known jihadist stronghold.

An attack the previous evening was launched around midnight Sunday into Monday on a Nigerian military post in Ajilari Cross district, a southwestern suburb of Maiduguri and just a few kilometres from the airport.

That same evening also saw an attack in Damboa area, south of Maiduguri.

Maiduguri, once the scene of daily shootings and bombings, had been relatively calm in recent years, with attacks peaking in the mid-2010s.

The last major attack was in 2021, when Boko Haram jihadists fired mortars at the city, killing 10 people.

But in December, an unclaimed bombing -- again a suspected suicide attacker -- killed at least seven people in a city mosque.

And in the countryside surrounding Maiduguri, violence has continued.

Last month, the United States began deploying 200 troops to Nigeria to provide technical and training support to the country's soldiers in fighting jihadist groups.

Malaysia calls on Israel to allow worshippers at Al-Aqsa, closed since Feb airstrikes, as Muslims prepare for Eid

17 Mar 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — Malaysia has called for the immediate reopening of the gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, urging governments with genuine influence to move beyond statements and apply real pressure to ensure access to the holy site as Muslims prepare to celebrate Aidilfitri.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Israeli occupation forces have kept the mosque’s gates closed, denying the faithful their right to worship at Islam’s third holiest site through the final days of Ramadan and the upcoming Aidilfitri.

“Israel’s actions have no legitimate basis in law, in morality or in any sincere conception of human dignity. The continued closure of Al-Aqsa is indefensible and a clear violation of international law. Its continuation reflects a level of impunity that has only grown with time,” he posted on Facebook today.

Anwar also conveyed Malaysia’s solidarity with Palestinian Muslims observing Aidilfitri under the current conditions.

“To Palestinian Muslims marking Eid under these conditions: your faith, your patience and your perseverance are seen. You do not stand alone. Malaysians will continue to speak where we must and act where we can,” he said. — Bernama

400 Martyred, 250 Injured in Pakistani Military Regime’s Airstrike on Addicts Rehab Hospital in Kabul, Fitrat Says

March 18, 2026

KABUL: At least 400 people were killed, and 250 others injured after Pakistan’s military regime reportedly carried out an airstrike on a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, Hamdullah Fitrat, the Deputy Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Fitrat said: “The attack occurred at around 9:00 p.m., when Pakistani military regime’s forces bombed the ‘Omid’ Drug Treatment Hospital, a 2,000-bed facility dedicated to treating individuals suffering from addiction.”

Large parts of the hospital were completely destroyed in the strike, and there are fears that the death toll could rise further, he said.

Unfortunately, the number of martyrs has reached 400 so far, and about 250 others have been injured,” Fitrat said, adding that the rescue teams remain at the scene, working to contain the fire caused by the bombardment and recover bodies still trapped beneath the rubble.

Video of crowd in cinema hall vowing to boycott Muslims after ‘Kerala Story 2’ screening draws flak

Sana Fazili

Mar 17, 2026

A video purportedly showing people in a cinema hall pledging to boycott Muslims socially and economically has gone viral on social media. While a Congress MP claimed that the clip was from Palghar in Maharashtra, police are reportedly still identifying where it was shot.

The clip shows a group of people on the stage making the pledge to boycott while others in the hall follow them.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain shared the video on his X handle and said the alleged incident took place on March 10 at a movie hall in Vasai, Palghar after a free screening of the film The Kerala Story 2.

“The continued encouragement of propaganda-driven narratives under the BJP government has increasingly targeted Muslims and deepened communal polarisation. When cinema is deployed as a political instrument to stigmatise an entire community, it risks turning prejudice into organised discrimination and further emboldening anti-Muslim sentiment,” Hussain wrote on X.

"We are not sure where it was shot and believe it could be mischief by some unscrupulous elements," a senior police official from the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police Commissionerate was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

In the video, the crowd can be heard raising ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogans and taking an ‘oath’ to not deal with Muslims for their daily needs such as buying vegetables, getting haircut done, etc. "We take an oath that we will only do business with the Hindus.

The Kerala Story was released in 2023 and its sequel was released last month and both the movies have been criticised for being provocative and promoting divisive narratives. The two films have been at heart of an intense political and cultural debate amid its depiction of forced religious conversions across various parts of India. The makers say that, like the first part, the film is based on true cases. The first film, released in 2023, also battled legal cases and calls for a ban over allegations of creating a communal divide.

Earlier, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi alsocited the controversial film as he criticised the use of cinema and media for political propaganda during an interaction with students of Marian College in Idukki, Kerala. He said that films and media should unite rather than divide society.

Sharing a video of his interaction with students of Marian College in Idukki, Kerala, on social media, Gandhi said cinema and media were increasingly being "weaponised" to vilify communities and create social divisions.

Responding to the question, Gandhi said that the public understands the social and cultural fabric of Kerala. "'The Kerala Story's' hall seems to be empty, and nobody's really watching it. And it shows you that there are people, the majority of this country, have an understanding of what Kerala is and Kerala's traditions and cultures," Gandhi said.

14 arrested for holding iftar party on boat in Varanasi, disposing of biryani waste in Ganga

Mar 18, 2026

VARANASI: Fourteen Muslim youths were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly defiling a place of worship and hurting religious feelings after a video purportedly showing them holding an iftar party on a boat and disposing of bones and waste of chicken biryani in the river Ganga went viral.

The action followed a written complaint filed by BJP Yuva Morcha's city unit chief Rajat Jaiswal on Monday.

ACP (Kotwali) Vijay Pratap Singh said based on the complaint, an FIR was lodged under sections 298 (defiling a place of worship with the intent to insult a religion), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 196(1)(b) (promoting enmity between different groups on the ground of religion), 270 (public nuisance), 223(b) (disobeying public servant's order) of BNS and also section 24 of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974.

The 14 accused were identified with the help of viral videos, leading to the arrest of Mohd Awwal, Amzad Ali, Mohd Samir, Mohd Ahmad alias Raza, Noor Ismail, Mohd Faizan, Mohd Ahmad, Mohd Tahseem, Mahfooj Alam, Mohd Tausif Ahmad, Amir Kaifi, Nehal Afridi, Mohd Anas, and Danish Saifi from Madanpura.

Singh said a police team got a tip-off about the accused at Gaighat on Tuesday afternoon. Cops reached the spot, and after a scuffle, arrested them and took them to Kotwali police station.

The complainant alleged, "The viral video showed that some Muslim youths consumed non-veg food in the name of an iftar party while sailing in front of Bindu Madhav Dharara temple, referring to the temple in the background as Alamgir Mosque. They later dumped the waste and bones into the river."

"The Ganga holds deep and unshakeable faith for followers of Sanatan Dharm. Thousands of devotees from across the country and the world visit Kashi every day to perform rituals and offer prayers using Ganga water. We filed a complaint with video clips as evidence against the act committed with a Jihadi mindset," he said.

2 women in Muslim League list for Kerala polls — one a Hindu, other a campaigner for greater gender representation

Shaju Philip

Mar 17, 2026

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a partner in the Congress-led Opposition UDF alliance in Kerala, on Tuesday announced a list of 25 candidates for the upcoming Assembly election. The list includes two women, one of whom is a Hindu.

Jayanthi Rajan, who is from a Dalit community, was appointed one of the party’s national assistant secretaries last year. She will contest from the Koothuparamba constituency in Kannur district in the election scheduled to take place on April 9.

The other woman in the IUML list was Fathima Thahilya, who will take on senior CPI(M) leader and the convener of the ruling LDF alliance, T P Ramakrishnan, in the Perambra seat in Kozhikode. Fathima, who is one of the state secretaries of the Muslim Youth League, had previously raised the demand for greater gender representation in the IUML.

The party had fielded only one woman candidate, Noorbina Rasheed, in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections. She was the party’s first woman Assembly election candidate in 25 years.

Announcing the list of candidates for 2026, IUML state president Sadik Ali Shihab Thangal said the party would contest in 27 seats, and that the names of candidates for two constituencies — Punalur and Chelakkara — would be announced later.

The IUML, which has 15 legislators in the outgoing Assembly, has brought in a generational change in the selection of candidates in 2026. The party has dropped seven sitting legislators, including six-time legislator Dr M K Muneer. Prominent among the sitting legislators seeking election again are P K Kunhalikutty, M Ali and N Shamsudheen.

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church had asked the Congress to take back the Thiruvambady seat in Kozhikode district and field a Catholic candidate, but this was not to be. The seat was contested by an IUML candidate, unsuccessfully, in 2021. The IUML will again contest the seat for the UDF this time.

Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill: Bill passed by Council amid concerns by Opp, ruling MLCs

18 Mar 2026

A day after it was passed by the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the Legislative Council on Tuesday cleared the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, amid fears expressed by opposition as well as ruling party legislators on misuse of provisions of the Bill by authorities as well as self-proclaimed protectors of religion.

The government has said the Bill seeks to prohibit unlawful religious conversions carried out through force, coercion, allurement, misrepresentation or other fraudulent means.

The Bill was opposed by the Congress and NCP (SP) from the opposition benches while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) supported it.

Replying to the discussion on the Bill, Minister of State for Home Pankaj Bhoyar said the Bill does not intend to snatch a person’s right to convert or curtail a woman’s freedom but only to curb forceful conversions. “The Bill is not targeting a particular religion. It is not about Hindu-Muslim. The government will ensure that it will be applicable to all religions,” he said.

Opposing the Bill, Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap questioned its need at this hour. “It is being presented in such a manner that it is brought to punish and target a particular community. Even before this Bill, any case of forceful conversion was dealt with by existing law. The provisions of the Bill give an impression that we are breaking the structure of the Constitution,” Jagtap said.

BJP MLC Parinay Phuke said the Bill is meant to protect Hindus and stop demogrpahic change. “Europe is facing the problem of growing population from countries like Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. We should be aware of this demographic change and therefore such Bills are necessary to ensure Hindu population is protected,” he said.

Even as the Sena (UBT) extended support to the Bill, its legislators Anil Parab and Sachin Ahir sought to know the details of instances based on which the Bill was being brought and actions taken by the government in the past against that. Bhoyar said a committee under the DGP was formed before the Bill was brought and extensive discussions had taken place. He, however, did not specify the number of cases which prompted the government to bring the Bill. Bhoyar said though there are provisions to deal with crimes committed through force, coercion or other fradulent means, there was no independent law to deal with conversions. “Therefore this Bill has been brought,” he said.

Independent MLC Satyajeet Tambe, while extending support to the Bill, said actions on ground after the passage of the Bill should not affect the youth negatively and their right to love should remain unchallenged. “There is a provision of giving notice of 60 days before conversion, which will create law and order problems. Allowing anyone to object to the conversion will complicate matters,” he said, adding that a child born of disputed marriages should be given the chance to chose his or her religion after 18 years of age instead of taking the mother’s religion. He also cautioned against political use of the Act, on the lines of Atrocities act.

FIR against SP’s Yusuf Malik for ‘misleading’ Eid protest call in Azam Khan’s name

Manish Sahu

Mar 17, 2026

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Samajwadi Party leader Yusuf Malik for allegedly spreading a misleading message attributed to jailed party leader and former cabinet minister Azam Khan, urging people to mark Eid by wearing black clothes and armbands as a sign of protest. Khan is currently lodged in Rampur district jail.

The police said that Malik, while addressing the media and supporters outside the jail on Saturday, claimed that Khan had conveyed that people should observe Eid in black. The statement was subsequently circulated widely across social media platforms and reported in sections of the press.

During the initial probe, the police found that Malik had not met Khan on Saturday. Subsequently, acting on a complaint lodged by Sub-Inspector Prem Chand Sharma, who accused Malik of circulating misleading information in Khan’s name, the Rampur police registered an FIR against him at Ganj police station.

The case was filed under sections 196 (promoting enmity between groups), 353 (statements conducing to public mischief), and 57 (abetting the commission of an offence by the public or a group of more than ten persons) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). No one has been arrested in the case.

Malik could not be contacted for comment.

Jitendra Kumar, Circle Officer, Rampur, said an inquiry is on into the matter.

According to the police, on Monday, they took cognisance of reports circulating in the media in which Malik claimed to have met Khan in jail and relayed a message purportedly given by him. However, during preliminary inquiry, it emerged that Malik had instead addressed a public meeting and held a press conference outside the jail premises on March 14.

The police alleged the act, prima facie, appeared to incite enmity between communities and threaten public order. Its circulation created fear among residents and seemed intended to provoke tensions between groups. Officials added that it disrupted communal harmony and is being treated as a serious, punishable offence, warranting strict action.

Samajwadi Party’s Moradabad district president Jaiveer Yadav said Malik is in the party but does not hold any post. He added that Malik used to look after Khan’s cases.

A 10-time MLA from Rampur Sadar and a former Cabinet minister, Azam Khan, has been lodged in jail since November after a local court in Rampur sentenced him and his son, Abdullah Azam Khan, to seven years’ imprisonment in a case related to the use of two PAN cards. Azam is considered one of the SP’s prominent Muslim leaders and has long been a key figure in the party.

‘Will it pass the legal test?’: Prakash Ambedkar questions Maharashtra’s new anti-conversion law, slams BJP for ‘ideological design’

Mar 17, 2026

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi president Prakash Ambedkar said Tuesday that the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, passed by the Maharashtra Assembly late Monday to curb religious conversions, will not withstand legal scrutiny, as it violates the principles of the Constitution.

The Maharashtra Assembly passed the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill by voice vote, introducing stringent provisions to curb religious conversions carried out through coercion, fraud, inducement or marriage. According to the Bill, those involved in unlawful religious conversions carried out under the pretext of marriage could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

Ambedkar, who is a lawyer, pointed out that even in states where such legislation has been adopted, it is facing legal challenges. In the last eight years, nine states, mostly Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled, have passed similar laws to prevent forcible marriage and conversion of Hindu women, to curb purported “love jihad”.

“The matter is pending before the High Court or the Supreme Court. In the case of Maharashtra, the legislation may receive approval in the Assembly and the Council due to the ruling BJP’s majority. But the larger question is, will it pass the legal test?” he asked.

“The Indian Constitution has accorded individual rights to religion. It has given the individual the right to marriage. Therefore, any legislation that questions these fundamental rights under any pretext will not withstand legal and constitutional validity. Such legislation violates the basic principles of the Constitution.”

‘BJP wants to keep the communal agenda simmering’

Referring to the stated aims and objectives mentioned in the legislation, which are to tackle deceit, fraud, coercion and allurement for religious conversion and marriage, the VBA president said, “At present, we have adequate measures to deal with such instances. Any individual who is subjected to atrocities or harassment can approach the police station. If an individual is forced into religious conversion against their wishes or harassed, they can file an FIR.”

Ambedkar added that the purpose of such legislation is part of the BJP’s political agenda.

“The BJP wants to keep the communal agenda simmering to polarise the society into Hindu versus Muslims or Hindus versus Christians. It is to consolidate their electoral base. The anti-Muslim phobia helps it unite the majority of Hindus. They have been doing this and will continue till they get an absolute majority both at the centre and in the states across the country,” he said.

“The BJP’s agenda is that it should emerge as the single largest party with absolute rule, which cannot be challenged politically. To achieve these larger goals, it has embarked on a communal agenda in some form or other. The anti-conversion law is part of that exercise,” he added.

When pointed out, there are no elections for the next 3.5 years in the state, Ambedkar said, “The BJP wants the anti- Muslim agenda to reach every segment across the state. They don’t want their agenda to dilute. Such legislation is part of their ideological design.”

Ambedkar strongly criticised the BJP’s argument that instances of interfaith marriages were taking place for religious conversion.

“There are BJP leaders who have gone for interfaith marriages. Show us one instance of exploitation. In a diverse country with multi-religious practices, interfaith marriages should be appreciated. As these set examples for others. It is a step towards unshackling the barriers built on caste and religion.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio, said instances of religious conversions, which are “forceful, involuntary or caused by influencing free consent of the citizens”, have been rising. Fadnavis said they are being carried out “in an organised manner by various institutions”.

“Many instances of mass conversion have come to light where gullible persons have been forcefully converted from one religion to another by offering any gift, gratification, easy money, or material benefit, either by cash or kind, employment, free education in school or college run by any religious body or institution. Promises to marry, a better lifestyle, divine healing, etc. These instances are causing disturbances to public order in the state and are affecting social harmony,” he said.

The chief minister added that individuals or families are susceptible to unlawful conversion due to their social and economic vulnerability in society, and they need protection from the state. The existing laws are not sufficient to address the various issues arising from such religious conversions, he argued.

NIA arrests Ukrainians, US citizen over drone terror plot linked to Myanmar

Imran Ahmed Siddiqui

18.03.26

Six arrested Ukrainian nationals and a US citizen were part of a group that entered India on tourist visas and were allegedly plotting terror activities using drones from Europe, sources in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said on Tuesday.

The accused had travelled to Mizoram without the mandatory restricted area permit, crossed illegally into Myanmar and met ethnic armed groups and delivered multiple consignments of drones from Europe via India. The NIA has alleged that the group was planning terror attacks, with their activities raising concerns of cross-border threats.

A US national was detained by the immigration bureau at Calcutta airport, and six Ukrainians were detained at Lucknow and Delhi airports on March 13. All of them were later taken into custody by the NIA and have been charged under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, along with other relevant sections.

"A probe has revealed that the arrested Ukrainian nationals were part of a 14-member group that had entered India on tourist visas on separate dates. They are being interrogated to ascertain the whereabouts of their seven associates and unearth the entire conspiracy,” an NIA official said.

According to him, the arrested US national was also part of the same group.

Ukraine has lodged an official protest with the external affairs ministry, demanding the immediate release of its citizens and access to them.

A spokesperson for the US embassy said: “We are aware of the situation. For privacy reasons, we cannot comment on cases involving US citizens.”

Projectile hits near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant, no damage or injuries reported

March 18, 2026

TEHRAN: A projectile hit an area near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant on Tuesday evening, however it caused no damage or injuries, Iran told the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“The IAEA has been informed by Iran that a projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr NPP on Tuesday evening. No damage to the plant or injuries to staff reported,” the UN nuclear watchdog said on X.

The strike came in the third week of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi reiterated his call for maximum restraint during the conflict to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization confirmed the strike earlier in the day, with the country’s Tasnim news agency saying the projectile hit the vicinity of the nuclear power plant in the port city of Bushehr at around 7 p.m. (1530 GMT).

Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, condemned the strike on Tuesday, adding that radiation levels around the plant, whose construction was started by a German company in the 1970s and later completed by Russia, were normal.

Drugmakers reroute to Saudi Arabia as Iran war chokes Gulf medicine supply

March 18, 2026

LONDON: Saudi Arabia has emerged as a potential lifeline for other Gulf states who face dwindling stocks of vital medicines the longer the Middle East war goes on.

Gulf airspace is constantly disrupted, but Riyadh and Jeddah airports remain open to accept deliveries from pharmaceutical companies. The medicines can then be transported by road to their destination.  Other options were Istanbul and Oman.

The Gulf relies heavily on imports and some medicines have short shelf lives and need strict cold-chain storage. But major airports in the region including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha have been closed because of drone strikes and missile attacks by Iran. Dubai and Doha are major cargo hubs linking Europe with Asia and Africa,

Some medical facilities are warning they could run low on supplies within four to six weeks, said  Prashant Yadav, senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations. Cancer drugs were among those at highest risk, he said. Delays in delivery of oncology medicines can have dire consequences for patients.

Wouter Dewulf, a professor at the Antwerp Management School, said industry data showed that over a fifth of global air cargo, the main route for critical or life-saving drugs and vaccines, was exposed to Middle East disruption.

One executive cautioned that alternative “cold-chain corridors,” or temperature-controlled routes used for sensitive medicines, could not be set up overnight and were not always available.

Another pharmaceutical company executive said it had set up internal teams to prioritize patient-critical shipments, including of cancer treatments, and warned some temperature-controlled shipments could miss connections unless proper storage and handling were secured.

A medical device company executive said the first step was to map shipments already in transit or ready to depart, then decide which pallets needed to be diverted and whether new shipments had to be planned.

The executive, who like others spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal operations, said some Europe-Asia cargo that typically move through Dubai or Doha airports was being rerouted via China or Singapore. Sea routes were not practical due to longer journey times, as well as closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz by Iran.

“If you have an urgent surgery with a patient waiting for treatment, you have to choose the faster mode of transport,” the executive said.

Yadav said delays in delivery of oncology medicines can have dire consequences for patients, who might be forced to restart a course of therapy, or see their cancer worsen.

The disruption was already a problem for some companies, he said, with some customers warning they could run low on supplies within four to six weeks if things did not improve.

Over 100 pharma and logistics industry participants joined a webinar last week hosted by Pharma.Aero, a life sciences logistics group, to discuss the Gulf crisis and its supply-chain and transport implications.

A look at the top Iranian official and the head of internal security targeted by Israel

March 18, 2026

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Ali Larijani, a top Iranian security official, was widely believed to be running the country as it reeled from the killing of its supreme leader and a widening war. Israel said Tuesday that it killed Larijani in an overnight strike.

Israel’s military also said it killed Iranian Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani, who led a powerful internal security force that has crushed waves of mass protests against the Shiite theocracy.

Iranian authorities later confirmed both deaths. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top security officials were killed in the surprise US and Israeli strikes that started the war. Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, who was appointed to replace him, has not been seen in public, and Israel suspects he was wounded.

The killing of top leaders has so far had little impact on the war itself, as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard continues to fire missiles at Israel and Arab Gulf countries. Iran has also effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil passes, sending prices up and rattling the world economy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes were aimed at weakening Iran’s government “to give the Iranian people the opportunity to remove it.” There have been no signs of anti-government protests since the war began, as many Iranians are sheltering from the American and Israeli strikes.

A political veteran with the supreme leader’s ear

Larijani hails from one of Iran’s most famous political families, which many media outlets have compared to the Kennedys in the United States. One brother, Sadeq, served as the head of Iran’s judiciary, while another, Mohammad Javad, was a senior diplomat who closely advised the late Khamenei on foreign affairs.

Larijani has been a conservative force within Iran’s theocracy, issuing increasingly hard-line threats throughout the years. In the 1990s, he served as Iran’s culture minister, tightening censorship. He served as parliament speaker from 2008 to 2020, and most recently as head of the Supreme National Security Council.

Larijani has also written at least six philosophy books, including three exploring the works of German philosopher Immanuel Kant.

He was appointed to advise Khamenei on strategy in nuclear talks with the Trump administration and traveled to Oman to meet with mediators just two weeks before the war began. Like other top Iranian leaders, he was under heavy US sanctions and implicated in the violent repression of mass protests in January.

He was ineligible to become supreme leader because he is not a Shiite cleric. But he was widely expected to serve as a top adviser, and many believed he was running the country as US and Israeli strikes have driven Iran’s leadership underground. The Supreme National Security Council said his son Morteza Larijani was also killed.

A week ago, after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack Iran “TWENTY TIMES HARDER” if Tehran stopped oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, Larijani responded to him on X.

“The sacrificial nation of Iran doesn’t fear your empty threats. Even those bigger than you couldn’t eliminate Iran,” he wrote. “Be careful not to get eliminated yourself.”

Shadowy leader of the ayatollahs’ shock troops

Less is known about Soleimani, who led Iran’s paramilitary Basij, an all-volunteer force fiercely loyal to the Islamic Republic. He is not related to Gen. Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s top general who was killed in a US strike in 2020.

An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said Soleimani was killed in a combat tent alongside other Basij commanders, who were using it as makeshift headquarters as Israel has targeted several of their bases.

Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani was born in the mid-1960s in the western Iranian city of Farsan. He first joined the Basij as a volunteer in 1984 during the Iran-Iraq war, when it was notorious for launching human wave attacks at fortified Iraqi positions. He became the commander of the Basij in 2019.

The Basij numbers in the hundreds of thousands, and includes military-style brigades, anti-riot police and a vast network of informers who spy on Iranian society. During protests, plainclothes members can often be seen attacking, beating and hauling away demonstrators.

Soleimani had been under US and international sanctions since 2021 connected to his involvement in crushing protests going back to the disputed presidential election of 2009. The US Treasury said the Basij killed “hundreds of Iranian men, women and children” when it cracked down on protests in 2019.

Thousands were killed and tens of thousands detained in January when Iranians again rose up. It was the bloodiest such crackdown since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and caught the attention of Trump, who threatened to intervene on the protesters’ behalf before shifting his attention to Iran’s nuclear program.

Lebanon paramedics risk deadly strikes to do their work

March 17, 2026

BEIRUT: Youssef Assaf was in a Lebanese Red Cross ambulance when it was targeted by an Israeli strike near Tyre, in southern Lebanon. The 35-year-old paramedic died of his wounds two days later.

“I was called around 10:30 p.m. and told that he was wounded and in the hospital,” his wife, Jeanne d’Arc Boutros, said from northern Lebanon, where she had fled to a relative’s home.

“I knew my husband was strong and could endure. I did not react at all — I just kept praying and repeating in my heart that nothing bad would happen to him,” the 32-year-old schoolteacher said.

But Assaf died within two days.

He was one of 38 Lebanese health care workers killed in Israeli strikes since the start of the current war on March 2, according to the Health Ministry.

The ministry said he died from wounds caused by an Israeli strike on their ambulance “as they were carrying out a rescue mission” after a strike.

Boutros said that when she heard the news of his death, “I don’t know what happened to me. I collapsed on the ground and was convulsing.”

“How can they wound or kill paramedics who are saving people? They are neither armed nor affiliated with any party,” the mother of three children, including a four-month-old girl, said.

The head of the Lebanese Red Cross, Georges Kettaneh, said that their teams operate in southern Lebanon only after notifying the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers, and stressed the need to secure safe access for their paramedics on the ground.

He said the Red Cross had sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry to contact the UN “regarding the protection of medical teams” and securing safe access routes.

The repeated strikes on health care workers have become a source of fear and anxiety for many of them, including Mona Abou Zeid, 59, who runs a hospital in the Nabatieh area in southern Lebanon.

“The situation is very difficult ... There is continuous shelling,” she said.

“We are afraid for our paramedics who move around to transport the wounded,” she added.

The fears of health care workers intensified after 12 were killed on Saturday in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a medical center in the town of Bourj Qalawiyah in southern Lebanon.

Fatima Shoumar’s husband, a nurse, was among those killed.

She said those killed were not “military people ... these people were doctors, nurses, they help children.”

Ramzi Kaiss, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the Israeli military had not provided evidence that health care facilities or ambulances it attacked were being used for military purposes.

Kaiss said that if the Israelis have evidence that ambulances are being misused, they “must issue a warning to cease this misuse and only attack after this warning goes unheeded.”

Since March 2, the Health Ministry has said, there have been 53 attacks on paramedics, 13 on medical centers, and 30 on ambulances.

“The pattern we’re seeing today is eerily similar to what we saw unfold between October 2023 and November 2024,” Kaiss said, “a period during which over 220 health workers were killed.”

Nasser Ajram, a paramedic for a local NGO in Sidon, was gripped by anxiety despite his determination to continue his humanitarian mission.

“The day before yesterday, they struck a center. They killed doctors and nurses ... there are no more red lines,” he said.

Ajram, 57, has barely seen his family and grandchildren for two weeks.

“It seems there is no protection.”

For Boutros, the loss was irreparable, and her four-year-old son was still asking when his father would come home.

“I always dreamed about how we would grow old together. I would tell him how he would become an old man, and I would grow old too.

“He loved basketball, skiing, hunting, and the sea. He loved helping people ... he did a lot in his life, and then he left.”

Israel says to end Gaza-bound UNICEF aid shipments from Egypt due to ‘smuggling’

March 17, 2026

JERUSALEM: Israel said it would halt UN children’s fund shipments to Gaza from Egypt after it said it had foiled an attempt to smuggle tobacco and nicotine in UNICEF-coordinated shipments Tuesday.

Israel “informed the head of UNICEF of the suspension of aid shipments to the Gaza Strip originating from Egypt and coordinated by the agency, following the thwarting of an attempted smuggling of tobacco and nicotine products detected today at the Kerem Shalom Crossing within humanitarian aid shipments coordinated by the agency,” said COGAT, the Israeli defense ministry body in charge of civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories.

COGAT added that the suspension would remain in place “until the agency provides the findings of a full investigation, as well as an official response on the matter.”

COGAT added that “bottles containing nicotine substances were found concealed inside cartons of hygiene kits,” during an inspection, the agency said, in a statement that included a photo of some of the seized items.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, said Tuesday that the Kerem Shalom crossing was currently the only entry point for humanitarian aid and commercial goods going to the Gaza Strip.

“Inside Gaza, yesterday, the UN and our partners were able to collect food, hygiene kits, early childhood development kits, medicine and animal fodder from Kerem Shalom, but more crossings must be opened to scale up the response,” it said in a statement.

Under the terms of a US-brokered October 2025 ceasefire deal, Israel remains in control of nearly half of the Gaza Strip, including all its border areas.

It has imposed a drastic blockade after the start of the war with Hamas in October 2023, prompting frequent calls for more aid trucks to be allowed into the tiny Palestinian territory from UN agencies and international NGOs.

Lebanon says Israeli strikes kill three soldiers

March 17, 2026

BEIRUT: Three Lebanese soldiers were killed in Israeli strikes on Tuesday, the Lebanese army said, as Israel carried out new raids and again ordered residents of vast parts of southern Lebanon to evacuate.

Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war on March 2 when pro-Iran Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel in response to US-Israeli strikes that killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israel has responded with intense strikes in multiple Lebanese regions and ground operations in the south, with its finance minister saying this month that Beirut’s suburbs would soon “resemble” the badly damaged Gazan city of Khan Yunis.

From Geneva, the UN rights office said Tuesday that threats by Israeli officials “to impose the same level of destruction on Lebanon as inflicted in Gaza are wholly unacceptable.”

In the southern city of Sidon, far from the border, displaced people were sleeping in their cars parked along the seafront corniche, according to an AFP team there.

The city “is full, we have no more capacity,” said Jihan Kaisi, the director of an NGO that runs a school-turned-shelter, where more than 1,100 people are crammed together.

“Lots of people are coming every day to ask for shelter but we don’t have space anymore, we can’t accept them,” she said, adding that the road from the south was blocked on Monday with people fleeing north following evacuation warnings.

- ‘Blatant’ contradiction -

Israel’s military on Tuesday renewed its call for residents to evacuate a region stretching more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Lebanon-Israel border.

The Lebanese military said three of its soldiers were killed in two Israeli air strikes in the south, while the Israeli army said its operations were not directed “against the Lebanese army.”

Lebanon’s army has tried to stay out of the war, but three of its soldiers were killed by Israeli shelling earlier this month during a failed Israeli commando operation in eastern Lebanon.

President Joseph Aoun said in a statement that targeting the army “blatantly contradicts” calls from Lebanon and the international community for the military to extend state control across the country and disarm Hezbollah.

The Iran-backed militant group announced a series of attacks Tuesday, including several on Israeli troops near the border inside south Lebanon.

Israel struck near Beirut’s airport in the city’s southern suburbs on Tuesday, killing one person, the health ministry said.

The Lebanese civil aviation authority said the airport continued to operate normally and that the road leading to it remained passable.

State media reported several other Israel strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, as well as in Doha Aramoun, south of the capital, where an Ethiopian woman was wounded.

- Israeli troops -

Israel’s army said it struck Hezbollah targets “across Lebanon, including weapon storage facilities, launchers and launching sites, terrorists, and structures belonging to the organization,” a day after announcing “limited” ground operations were underway.

Israeli strikes have killed 912 people, including 111 children, since March 2, Lebanon’s health ministry said.

Israel’s military chief of staff Eyal Zamir said on Monday that “more than 400 terrorists have been eliminated so far.”

Around 14 percent of Lebanese territory is under Israeli evacuation warnings, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council.

Lebanese authorities said more than one million people had registered as displaced since March 2 — more than a sixth of the country’s population — with more than 130,000 staying in official shelters.

These displaced people “will not return to their homes” in the south as long as the security of residents in northern Israel is not guaranteed, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said.

Alongside its massive bombardment campaign, Israel has said it is carrying out ground incursions in the south.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military said additional troops “have been deployed in Lebanon... to remove threats and create an additional layer of security for residents of northern Israel against Hezbollah’s threat.”

439 drones, 36 missiles: The staggering toll of Iran’s 3-week strike on Saudi Arabia

March 18, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has intercepted at least 439 hostile drones and 36 ballistic and cruise missiles since Iran began its retaliatory strikes against Gulf states following the US-Israeli attack on Tehran on February 28, according to a tally of announcements by the Saudi Defense Ministry.

The figures, compiled from official Saudi military statements and reports by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), underscore the scale and intensity of Iran’s aerial campaign against the region’s largest economy and its most critical energy infrastructure.

The interceptions span multiple waves of attacks that have kept Saudi air defenses on near-constant alert for nearly three weeks.

About 278 of the drones were launched toward the Eastern Province, home to many of the Kingdom’s oil refineries, followed by Shaybah, a major oilfield located in the Empty Quarter. Most of the missiles were launched at Al-Kharj, 80 km southeast of Riyadh, where the Prince Sultan Air Base is located.

Across the Gulf, Iran has launched hundreds of additional projectiles at neighboring states.

The UAE has faced the heaviest bombardment. As of March 17, the UAE Ministry of Defense reported that its air defenses have engaged a cumulative total of 1,672 UAVs or drones, 314 ballistic missiles and 15 cruise missiles, launched from Iran since the start of the conflict.

Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have also come under repeated fire.

Oman, which has historically maintained back-channel ties with Tehran, has not been entirely spared, with Iranian drones striking its port of Duqm.

Iran has denied deliberately targeting Gulf civilian and economic infrastructure, insisting its operations are aimed at US military assets and Israeli-linked facilities in the region. Gulf governments have rejected that characterization, with several summoning Iranian ambassadors and lodging formal protests.

The escalating aerial campaign forms the backdrop to an emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers convened in Riyadh on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the meeting aims to deepen consultation and coordination among member states on how best to support peace and stability across the region.

With no ceasefire in sight and air defenses across the Gulf under sustained pressure, analysts warn the window for diplomatic de-escalation is narrowing rapidly.

Gold jewelry top gift for Eid in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Region

March 17, 2026

RIYADH: Gold jewelry in its various forms remains one of the most popular gifts for Eid Al-Fitr, offered by many residents of Eastern Region to their families.

The gesture reflects appreciation for efforts made during the holy month of Ramadan, from preparing iftar and suhoor meals to organizing the home and fostering a spiritual atmosphere.

Goldsmith Abdulmonem Ali Al-Saghah said gold jewelry had added value, combining adornment with financial security. It can be worn at family gatherings and weddings while also retaining resale value.

He said many families in Eastern Region have practiced goldsmithing for generations, with the profession often passed down from parent to child. This tradition helps preserve family heritage while providing reliable financial returns.

Al-Saghah added that Saudi Arabia is considered one of the leading countries in the gold industry, with jewelry typically classified according to karat, craftsmanship and design.

Gold is widely regarded as a safe long-term asset, prompting many to buy it not only as an adornment but also as a form of saving for future financial security.

Jamil Al-Haram: The personal Umrah guide of kings and presidents

TAREQ AL-THAQAFI

March 17, 2026

MAKKAH: Jamil Sulaiman Jalal was an Umrah guide (mutawif) who chaperoned kings and world leaders, including King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia.

His life’s mission was intertwined with the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Islam’s holiest site.

Jalal’s career spanned more than seven decades of service, during which he witnessed major historical transformations in Hajj and Umrah.

In an interview with Arab News, his grandson Ahmed Jalal spoke about the pride he had in his grandfather’s legacy.

“My grandfather viewed tawaf (ritual circumambulation of the Kaaba) as an honor before it was a job.

“He was keen to perform it with sincerity and respect for every pilgrim, regardless of their languages and cultures.

“We would see him close to the people, loving the sacred Mosque and considering the service of the pilgrims as the greatest deed one could offer in this life.”

The elder Jalal was given the nickname Jamil Al-Haram, or beauty of the sacred mosque, which his grandson said was a reflection of his character and legacy.

He said the family took great pride in the esteem he received from leaders and heads of state.

Jalal’s journey with tawaf began in 1947-48, at a time when pilgrims would cross the seas for many long months to reach Makkah.

In that era, the pilgrimage seasons would overlap, to the extent that a pilgrim arriving for Hajj might encounter another who had just completed his rituals and was returning to his homeland.

It was within this unique environment that his character was forged, his bond with the sacred Mosque was cemented and his values, rooted in patience, proper guidance and compassion for the pilgrim, deeply entrenched.

Throughout his long career, Jalal performed tawaf with a number of kings and presidents, including King Abdulaziz in 1948–49.

The king noticed his distinction despite his young age and that was a pivotal moment in his life.

Some heads of state used the Jamil Al-Haram nickname in recognition of his refined manner of conducting the pilgrim guidance.

In the heart of the Grand Mosque, Jalal learned nine languages by interacting with pilgrims from various countries around the world every day.

His life story is filled with unforgettable human encounters, among them is an anecdote of a guest who felt content to only perform the circumambulation, believing the Sa’i ritual (walking or running seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa) to be too much.

Jalal gently and calmly persuaded him that the rituals were only completed with the Sa’i.

The guest then continued to complete the full ritual with peace of mind.

Jalal’s roles were not limited to tawaf, he also served as a muezzin (the person who calls to prayer) in the Grand Mosque.

He was among those chosen to give the signal to the cannon crew in the Al-Bayraq area to announce the time for breaking the fast — an honor he remained proud of throughout his life.

He was also classified as a historical figure by the King Abdulaziz Library, in official recognition that documented the journey of a man whose name became intertwined with a place and an era.

His life stands as a testament to the fact that serving the Two Holy Mosques is a great honor.

Although Jalal died, Jamil Al-Haram is alive in the memory of the Grand Mosque and in the hearts of those who knew him.

Wood Lane Dagenham post office could become mosque

17TH MARCH

By Gianni Cirillo

A post office in Dagenham could be turned into a mosque and community centre after attempts to sell the site have gone on for almost three years.

Plans were submitted to Barking and Dagenham Council by applicant ArRabia Foundation and agent PPM Planning Limited to change the use of the post office at 279 Wood Lane to a mosque and community centre.

The proposal was made official on March 11 and according to an accompanying document, "seeks to introduce a community-focused use that responds to local need".

The space would be used for prayer, small gatherings, learning activities and community programmes serving children, families, older residents, and local groups.

The application also proposes the erection of a single-storey, rear outbuilding to provide toilet and washing facilities.

The extension is "essential to support the proposed place of worship - mosque and community use" and to ensure "inclusive and safe" operation of the facility.

Submitted alongside the application is a redacted letter from the postmaster of the Wood Lane branch.

The author said they have held the role since October 1998 and are responsible for the operation of the post office and associated retail business.

The letter says: "I have been attempting to sell the business as a going concern for approximately three years."

In June 2023, BTC Commercial Group marketed the property for 19 months but only generated 14 expressions of interest and none of which developed into a sale.

In January 2025, Victor Michael Estate Agents marketed the property but it remains unsold.

The letter continues: "However, I now have a viable buyer - ArRabia Foundation, who are in a position to complete the purchase, and I am very keen to sell the property to them."

No external amplification, public address systems, or outdoor congregation areas are proposed, according to a planning document.

The mosque and community centre would operate during "reasonable daytime and early evening hours" with "no significant increase in footfall".

A separate planning document says the opening hours will be 7am-10pm all week.

The site will have a capacity of up to 70 visitors "although it should be noted other than the first Friday prayer session, the majority of sessions within the building will be in the region of 35".

There is not a clear date for when a decision is expected to be made on the proposal by the council.

Worlds Apart: British Muslim Attitudes on the Iran Conflict

March 17, 2026

A new report by Policy Exchange, Worlds Apart: British Muslim Attitudes on the Iran Conflict, reveals that recent developments in the Middle East are being viewed differently by Muslims in the UK when compared with the wider public.

British Polling Council (BPC) member JL Partners polled a nationally representative UK sample of 2,223 adults, as well as an additional sample of 1,031 Muslims in the UK.  Respondents were asked about their views on the military strikes in Iran, the role of UK foreign policy, and their attitudes towards prominent countries in current-day international geopolitics. The fieldwork dates for the survey were 2 – 13 March 2026, with respondents being recruited using an online panel.

While 14% of the general population believed that Iran was not a significant threat before the US-Israel airstrikes, this rises to 45% for British Muslims. Compared to the general population, British Muslims are more likely to cite gaining control of oil supplies as a motive behind the military action against Iran (40% / 15%) and far more likely to consider the strikes as ‘definitively wrong’ (50% / 17%). There is a profound divergence in how events and developments are being interpreted.

Beyond the Iran conflict, the survey found that British Muslims also have a broadly different view of the world order and the international system. While 8% of people in the UK view Iran favourably, this rises to nearly two in five people – 39% – among British Muslims. Muslims in the UK have much warmer attitudes towards Iran than towards the United States and Israel, as well as Saudi Arabia. It is worth noting that US is far from popular with the wider population, with only 23% having a favourable view of the country (and 40% having an unfavourable view).

Looking further afield, British Muslims are dramatically less hostile towards both China and Russia when compared with the general public. While 8% of the wider population have a favourable view of Russia, this rises to 29% for British Muslims. Fifteen per cent of the general population have a favourable view of China, rising to 38% for British Muslims. This exposes a certain British Muslim scepticism of Western geopolitics, holding relatively favourable views towards countries which could be perceived as having hostile anti-West regimes. British Muslims are younger, on average, than the UK general population. While younger generations are traditionally linked to stronger forms of disillusionment with Western geopolitics, hostility towards the US and Israel – as well as support for Iran – is significantly greater among UK Muslims of all ages than the youngest group of the wider public in the analysis (18–25-year-olds).

There is considerable public interest in the Iran conflict. Most of the British public is following events closely, with nearly two-thirds of respondents reporting this – which is very high for a foreign policy issue and the fact that the UK has not been directly involved in the strikes on Iran. British Muslims are even more engaged, with 81% saying they are following the Iran conflict closely. Compared to the wider public, the relatively youthful British Muslim population are more likely to digest information and material on the conflict from channels such as Qatar-headquartered Al Jazeera, social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, and podcasts/YouTube commentators.

North Watford Mosque hosts multi-faith community iftar

17TH MARCH

By Robyn Bennett

A community iftar brought together people of different faiths and backgrounds in Watford.

Hosted by North Watford Mosque, the event took place on Saturday evening and welcomed guests from across Watford and Hertfordshire for an evening of reflection, friendship, and shared values.

Attendees from Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities gathered to break the fast together and promote unity during the holy month of Ramadan.

Cllr Asif Khan, who helped organise the event earlier this month, said: "Ramadan is a time of reflection, compassion, and community. It was wonderful to see people from different faiths and backgrounds coming together to share a meal and strengthen the bonds that make Watford such a welcoming and united town."

Among the guests were Watford MP Matt Turmaine, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Nicholas Buxton, and Chief Superintendent Jamie Fowler of Hertfordshire Constabulary. Faith leaders in attendance included Reverend Richard Banham of St Mary’s Church and representatives from Watford Synagogue.

The evening began with brief reflections on Ramadan and the tradition of fasting across religions, followed by the iftar meal at sunset.

Mr Turmaine said: "I was delighted to be invited to attend the iftar at North Watford Mosque. It is always a pleasure and an honour to join those breaking their fast. Having visited many times, I know how hospitable everyone there is.

"In the troubled times our world is presently facing, such solidarity was special indeed."

The event is part of ongoing efforts in Watford to promote understanding and collaboration between faith groups, civic leaders, and residents.

EU and NATO leadership ‘worst in decades’ – El Pais oped

17 Mar, 2026

The EU and NATO have their worst leadership in decades, marked by incompetence, a policy of appeasing the US, and failing to protect European interests, according to a scathing critique by journalist Claudi Perez in Spain’s leading newspaper, El Pais.

The opinion piece, published on Tuesday, lambasts European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, for their responses to the unprovoked US-Israeli war on Iran.

Perez, a political and economic correspondent, excoriates Rutte for his March 2 Fox News interview, deeming his praise of Trump as the “leader of the free world” an act of “boundless sycophancy.” His credibility was left “in tatters” after he voiced support for the US strikes, only for key NATO members, Germany, the UK, Italy, France, and Spain, to publicly rule out involvement.

Perez points out that von der Leyen’s “unbridled Atlanticism” and pro-Israel stance produced a “disastrous statement” that she was forced to reverse within 48 hours. On March 9, she declared Europe could no longer be a “custodian for the old-world order,” signaling to critics a break from international law. Two days later, she vowed an “unwavering commitment” to “always uphold” the UN Charter.

Perez dismisses Kallas as an inconsistent “lightweight” who shares the Brussels leadership’s “knack for stepping on giant banana peels.” According to Perez, she correctly ruled out a NATO role in the Strait of Hormuz, only to undermine herself by prematurely suggesting EU members might contribute to a mission to secure it. This incoherence, Perez argues, stems from her “obsession” with Russia, which colors all other agendas. On Tuesday, Kallas flatly rejected Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s call to normalize relations with Moscow and regain access to cheaper Russian energy.

The piece also takes a swipe at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who “botched” the matter by being “incapable” of defending Spain in the Oval Office after Trump berated Madrid for criticizing the US-Israeli actions in Iran. Spain was the first EU country to explicitly condemn the attack, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stating simply, “no to war.”

Senior EU official rebukes Zelensky over Orban threat

17 Mar, 2026

European Council President Antonio Costa has rebuked Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky over a recent threat directed at Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Zelensky suggested earlier this month that he could dispatch the Ukrainian military to “speak” with a “certain person” in the EU – widely understood to be Orban – over vetoing a controversial €90 billion ($105 billion) emergency loan for Kiev.

Hungary reacted with outrage, with Orban calling the remarks “political banditry” and “moral blackmail.”

Speaking to the European Newsroom on Monday, Costa said that while Brussels has “very good relations” with Ukraine and “especially” Zelensky, such remarks are unacceptable.

“Of course, we cannot accept it when, even in an emotional moment, someone addresses the leader of a European Union member state inappropriately,” he stated.

The rare rebuke echoed an earlier statement by European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill, who said last week that Zelensky’s “type of language is not acceptable,” warning “there must not be threats against EU member states.” Neither Costa nor Gill mentioned potential repercussions for Kiev over the threat.

Orban earlier slammed the lack of proper EU condemnation as a betrayal, claiming the bloc was conspiring with Kiev to destabilize his government ahead of upcoming elections. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico urged EU leaders to “distance themselves” from Zelensky’s “outrageous blackmailing statements,” while several other European politicians, including Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, longtime Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik and German opposition leader Alice Weidel, also criticized his remarks.

Hungary has long clashed with Kiev, opposing its EU and NATO bids and resisting funding for Ukraine’s war effort. Tensions have sharply escalated since Orban vetoed the emergency loan last month, following Kiev’s halt of Russian oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia via the Soviet-built Druzhba pipeline. Kiev cited damage from Russian strikes – claims Moscow denies – while Hungary and Slovakia accuse the Ukrainian authorities of deliberately cutting supplies to exert pressure. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said this week that Budapest will continue to oppose the loan scheme until supplies resume.

Trump: Will have the honour of taking Cuba, can do anything with it

Mar 18, 2026

President Donald Trump on Monday raised the possibility of the US "taking" Cuba, telling reporters at the White House, "I do believe I will be having the honour of taking Cuba." He further said, "Taking Cuba. I mean, whether I free it, take it. I think I can do anything I want with it. They're a very weakened nation right now."

The president's words came on the same day as Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout, amid diminishing fuel supplies. On Monday evening, Cuban officials had planned to announce that the country's communist govt would open itself to foreign investment, including from the US, Cuba's deputy prime minister, Oscar Perez-Oliva Fraga, told NBC News. "Cuba is open to having a fluid commercial relationship with US companies, also with Cubans residing in the US and their descendants," deputy prime minister said.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio Tuesday said Cuba "needs new people in charge" to repair it. Rubio, who himself is of Cuban heritage, said the island "has an economy that doesn't work in a political and governmental system. They can't fix it." Rubio added, "They have to change dramatically."

The Trump administration is seeking to push Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel from power, according to four people familiar with the talks. The move would topple a key figurehead but leave in place the repressive Communist govt that has ruled Cuba for more than 65 years. The Americans have signalled to Cuban negotiators that the president must go, but are leaving the next steps up to the Cubans, the people said.

The US so far is not pushing for any action against Fidel Castro's family members, who remain the country's top power brokers, two of the people said. That is consistent with the general desire of President Trump and his aides to force regime compliance rather than regime change in their foreign policy. In the view of some Trump administration officials, removing Cuba's head of state would allow structural economic changes in the country that Diaz-Canel, whom the officials consider a hard-liner, is unlikely to support, one of the people said.

It is unclear how widely Cuba intends to open its economy. The scheduled announcement, which could not be broadcast, coincided with a severe humanitarian and energy crisis, with some experts saying the island could run out of fuel within weeks because of a de facto blockade by the Trump administration. For the past three months, the US has choked off Cuba's access to foreign oil.

Fraga, who also serves as minister of foreign trade, also said govt would open the economy to investments beyond the private sector. "This goes beyond the commercial realm," he said. "It also applies to investments, not only to small ones, but also to large ones." NYT

US Attorney General Bondi formally summoned to Congress in Epstein case

Ana Faguy

Mar 18, 2026

A US congressional committee has formally summoned Attorney General Pam Bondi, demanding that she answer questions over her handling of the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, wrote in the subpoena letter that his committee is investigating the "possible mismanagement" of the investigation.

The move comes weeks after Nancy Mace, a Republican lawmaker, introduced a motion to subpoena Bondi and accused the justice department of a "cover-up" in releasing the Epstein files.

A justice department spokesperson described the subpoena as "completely unnecessary".

Bondi and the Trump administration have faced growing pressure across the political spectrum to release all documents related to the probe.

"The Committee has questions regarding the Department of Justice's handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and his associates and its compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act," Comer wrote in the letter.

The justice department has also faced criticism over its handling of the files, including failing to redact the names of Epstein's victims.

"As Attorney General, you are directly responsible for overseeing the Department's collection, review, and determinations regarding the release of files pursuant to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, and the Committee therefore believes that you possess valuable insight into these efforts," he said of Bondi. Bondi has been asked to appear on 14 April.

Last November, Trump signed into law legislation passed by Congress compelling the justice department to release all material from its investigations into Epstein.

But after millions of documents were released, the agency faced bipartisan backlash, with lawmakers accusing it of failing to obscure some identifying information about survivors while protecting the identities of those who were not victims.

The justice department said it had continued to provide policymakers with the facts.

"This subpoena is completely unnecessary," the justice department told the BBC on Tuesday. "Lawmakers have been invited to view the unredacted files for themselves at the Department of Justice, and the Attorney General has always made herself available to speak directly with members of Congress."

Should Bondi appear - she has not said otherwise - she will join a growing list of high-profile names to testify before the House Oversight Committee.

Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, appeared before the committee last month.

US counterterrorism chief resigns in protest over Iran war

17 Mar, 2026

Joe Kent, head of the US National Counterterrorism Center, has resigned in protest over Washington’s war with Iran, saying that Israel has dragged the US into another “never‑ending” conflict that does not serve American interests.

A former military officer who also served in the CIA, Kent was nominated by US President Donald Trump for the position of counterterrorism chief in February 2025 and confirmed by the Senate in July of the same year. He completed 11 combat tours, mostly in Iraq, before leaving the military in 2018.

“I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation,” Kent said in a resignation letter he posted on X on Tuesday. He also stated that “it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

Washington and West Jerusalem launched unprovoked attacks on the Islamic Republic late last month while blaming Tehran for the conflict and openly seeking regime change. The US and Israel described the operation as a preemptive strike aimed at preventing Tehran from building a nuclear weapon – an ambition it denies.

Kent claimed that Trump fell victim to a misinformation campaign orchestrated by Israel that deceived him into believing Tehran was a threat. Similar lies were used to drag the US into war with Iraq back in 2003, he argued.

“We cannot make this mistake again,” the outgoing counterterrorism chief stated. “I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives,” he added.

The announcement came just a day after Axios reported that Trump was allegedly considering the seizure of Iran’s Kharg Island offshore oil hub in a move that would likely require a ground operation.

US-Israeli attacks have already reportedly killed over 1,000 Iranian civilians, triggering retaliatory attacks across the Middle East that effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz – a key oil and gas shipping lane.

CAIR-Pittsburgh Welcomes Arrest in Threat Against Local Mosque, Calls for Vigilance Amid Rising Islamophobia

March 17, 2026

The Pittsburgh chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Pittsburgh), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of an individual accused of making threats against the Islamic Center of Western Pennsylvania (ICWP) and is calling for continued vigilance to protect Muslim communities.

On March 13, ICWP received a threatening phone message, prompting an immediate law enforcement response and the cancellation of congregational prayers during the holy month of Ramadan out of concern for community safety.

Authorities have since arrested a suspect, identified as Ted Frank, who is now facing felony charges of ethnic intimidation and terroristic threats. The Northern Regional Police Department is leading the investigation, and the FBI has been notified.

CAIR-Pittsburgh has been in communication with ICWP leadership, providing guidance and support as the community navigates the aftermath of the incident.

In a statement, CAIR-Pittsburgh Executive Director Christine Mohamed said:

This incident is deeply concerning, but it is not isolated. When a mosque is targeted, it impacts an entire community, including families, children, and individuals simply seeking to worship in peace. No one should feel unsafe gathering for prayer, especially during Ramadan. We will continue working with community partners to support efforts that ensure accountability and the protection of our community.”

Elected officials also responded to the incident, condemning the threat and expressing support for the local Muslim community.

In a statement, Congresswoman Summer Lee said:

“I am outraged by this hateful, threatening message and I stand with the Islamic Center of Western Pennsylvania and the entire Muslim community. Targeting a place of worship is always horrible, but it is especially heartbreaking that is happening during the month of Ramadan. I am working with local and federal authorities to help ensure that the Muslim community can pray and celebrate in peace.

“The level of open and unchecked Muslim hatred, bigotry, and fear mongering all over TV, social media, and in Congress is reprehensible. Just in the past few weeks, Members of Congress have called Muslims ‘enemies’ and said ‘we need more Islamophobia, not less.’ And as we are seeing in Western PA and around the country, this kind of rhetoric has consequences. Republican leadership should be ashamed for not condemning this. Our communities should stand together in these difficult times.”

According to CAIR’s most recent civil rights report, complaints of anti-Muslim bias and discrimination have continued to rise nationwide, reflecting an ongoing pattern of Islamophobia impacting communities across the country.

CAIR-Pittsburgh will continue to monitor the case as it progresses and support the community as needed.

The organization encourages community members to report any incidents of bias, threats, or harassment and reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding civil rights, ensuring that all communities can live and worship freely without fear.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

CAIR-Texas Welcomes Court Order Extending School Voucher Application Deadline

March 17, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations Texas (CAIR-Texas) today welcomed a federal judge’s order that the application period for the state’s voucher program be extended to March 31, citing concerns about fairness and equal access.

U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett granted a temporary restraining order to extend the application window for families seeking school vouchers. In his ruling, Judge Bennett called it “troubling” that no Islamic schools have been approved to participate in the program. A group of Islamic schools and Muslim parents are suing the exclusion of Islamic schools from the program.

Earlier this year, CAIR-Texas sent a letter to the Comptroller and called on the community to urge the Attorney General and Comptroller to end the exclusion of Muslim families in TEFA.

In a statement, CAIR-Texas said:

“We welcome the court’s decision to extend the application deadline and recognize the serious concerns raised about the exclusion of Islamic schools from Texas’ voucher program. All families, regardless of their faith, deserve equal access to educational opportunities supported by public programs.

“The lack of approved Islamic schools raises important questions about whether the program is being implemented in a fair, inclusive and nondiscriminatory manner. We urge state officials to take immediate steps to ensure that faith-based schools, including Islamic institutions, are given a fair opportunity to participate.

“CAIR-Texas will continue to monitor this issue closely and advocate for the rights of Muslim students, parents, and educators across our state.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Mamdani's public observance of Ramadan highlights Islam in NYC

March 17, 2026

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been using his office to bring his faith, Islam, into the city - into the center of his city's cultural life, and he's doing it in a way that has never been seen before. During this Ramadan, he's held half a dozen public prayers and celebrations. The latest was last night. But as NPR's Brian Mann reports, Mamdani's effort to celebrate his Muslim faith has faced a backlash.

BRIAN MANN, BYLINE: Just before sunset, a big festive crowd gathers in the Museum of the City of New York in Harlem. They've come to share iftar, the traditional dinner that marks the end of each day of Ramadan fasting, hosted on this night by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who stands to speak.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

ZOHRAN MAMDANI: It is not every day that we see in one room the sheer breath of Muslim life in New York City. And I will say it once more, Ramadan Mubarak, my friends.

MANN: As a musician plays, people break the fast with dates, then pass platters of food.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

MANN: With his trademark grin, Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of America's biggest city, goes table to table. It's a celebration of the roughly 1 million Muslims who live here. But during his speech, Mamdani also describes this gathering as an act of defiance.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

MAMDANI: For nearly as long as there has been a New York City, there have been Muslim New Yorkers. And yet for nearly just as long, those with power and platform have sought to dehumanize us.

MANN: He was responding to Alabama's Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who'd reposted earlier that day an image of Mamdani celebrating one of these public iftars next to an image of the 9/11 terror attacks with the words, the enemy is inside the gates. NPR reached out to Tuberville's office for comment. They didn't respond. Speaking to the crowd in Harlem, Mamdani described Tuberville's post as bigotry.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

MAMDANI: And when I hear such hatred and disdain unchecked in its rancor, I feel an isolation and a loneliness that I know that many of you have felt as well.

MANN: These attacks on Mamdani from the right began last year during his rapid ascent as the country's most influential Muslim politician. And Tuberville's post isn't the only attack Mamdani's faced during Ramadan. After Mamdani criticized President Trump's decision to launch a war against Iran, one of New York City's most influential talk radio hosts, Sid Rosenberg, blasted Mamdani on social media, calling the mayor a cockroach and accusing him of hating Jews. Mamdani described Rosenberg's post as racist.

SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

MAMDANI: To be called animals, insects, to be called a jihadist mayor, to be called a cockroach - this language is both painfully familiar to me as a Muslim New Yorker, but also as someone who was born in East Africa.

MANN: Rosenberg offered a partial apology on his radio show, saying he regretted calling Mamdani names. Then he doubled down, describing Mamdani as dangerous.

(SOUNDBITE OF RADIO SHOW, "SID & FRIENDS IN THE MORNING")

SID ROSENBERG: And I think his policies should scare the living daylights out of any decent New Yorker.

MANN: Tensions escalated again a few days later on March 7, when a small group of far-right activists gathered outside Mamdani's official residence in Manhattan, calling for an end to what they described as the Islamic takeover of New York City. Counterprotesters turned up. There were clashes, and two Muslim men from Pennsylvania allegedly threw improvised explosive devices. This from ABC News.

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT")

DAVID MUIR: The alarming scene here in New York City outside the official home of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Two suspects allegedly trying to detonate homemade bombs right during a protest.

MANN: FBI officials say the attack was inspired by ISIS. The devices failed to detonate. There were no injuries, and the men were arrested and are awaiting trial. At a press conference, Mamdani spoke carefully, condemning the anti-Muslim rally and the attempted violence.

(SOUNDBITE OF PRESS CONFERENCE)

MAMDANI: While I found this protest appalling, I will not waver in my belief that it should be allowed to happen. Ours is a free society, where the right to peaceful protest is sacred.

MANN: Far-right bigotry against Muslim Americans isn't new, but it's intensified in recent weeks after other violent attacks in Michigan and Virginia, allegedly perpetrated by Muslims, which are also being investigated as acts of terrorism, one targeting a synagogue. Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles posted on X that Muslims, quote, "don't belong in American society." Khalid Latif, one of New York's most influential imams, thinks efforts to blame all Muslims for these attacks are well organized and often effective.

KHALID LATIF: You actually don't lose rights by ensuring someone else has more rights. That's just not how it works. But the ability to mobilize people through fear has been a proven strategy.

MANN: NPR met with Latif at his Islamic Center of New York City, where volunteers were preparing an evening iftar meal of chicken, rice and dates, with the entire community invited to join. Latif says these gatherings offer a chance to set aside differences.

LATIF: You and I can be at a iftar dinner together, and you don't have to share faith with me, and we can just both sit and eat.

MANN: Mamdani has continued to hold his high-profile iftar dinners, the latest at Rikers Island, the city's massive jail complex, where he prayed last night and broke his fast with Muslim men behind bars.

UNIDENTIFIED PEOPLE: (Praying in non-English language).

MAMDANI: This is one of the most meaningful evenings that I've had as the mayor of New York City.

MANN: Does it send any kind of message, or is it strictly a moment of worship and community?

MAMDANI: This is me just being a Muslim New Yorker. There are some for whom that is a political act. As much as there have been attempts to caricature what it means to be Muslim in this city, we can see in this room so many different ways to be Muslim.

MANN: Jail officials allowed NPR to speak with men who prayed and ate with Mamdani on the condition that we not use their names. They describe the mayor as a Muslim brother.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: I'm ecstatic. He cares about us, even though we're going through a rough time.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: It's a proud thing to not be looked down upon, especially when you have someone as powerful as the mayor here. That's a blessing.

MANN: Other Muslim New Yorkers have told NPR they see Mamdani's public observance of Ramadan as a pivot point for their community, a moment after years of stigma and suspicion when they feel welcome in a new way. Syed Adnan Bukhari is a city worker who joined Mamdani's iftar in Harlem.

SYED ADNAN BUKHARI: You know, we're good people and we have nothing to hide. And I think Zohran being elected, he's showing the positive side to everyone.

MANN: Mamdani's been in office less than four months, and there are still deep tensions here. Verbal and social media attacks by the far right aren't going away. Mamdani faces suspicion among many Jewish leaders over his support for Palestinian rights. And the war in Iran and continued violence in Gaza, Israel and other parts of the Middle East are felt deeply in New York City. Through all of that, Mamdani says Muslim families will keep gathering.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

MAMDANI: Because it is together that we find ease. It is together that we do so in solidarity. And we find it in the city that is our home.

MANN: Mamdani has been careful to show he's not only mayor of the city's Muslim community. Last night, he observed Ramadan. Today, he celebrated St. Patrick's Day, joining the big parade here and attending a Catholic Mass. Brian Mann, NPR News, New York.

CAIR: U.S. Muslims to Mark End of Ramadan Fast with Prayers

March 17, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, said today that on Thursday, March 19, or Friday, March 20, the Muslim community in America will mark the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan with communal prayers around the country.

[NOTE: Ramadan is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from break of dawn to sunset. *Because dates may vary, consult local mosques or Muslim community leaders for exact dates and times of Eid ul-Fitr activities.]

The prayers mark the beginning of the Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or “feast of fast breaking” holiday, in which Muslims exchange social visits and seek to strengthen family and community bonds. During this holiday, Muslims greet each other by saying “Eid mubarak” (EED-moo-BAR-ak), meaning “blessed Eid,” and “taqabbalallah ta’atakum,” or “may God accept your deeds.” Many communities also hold multicultural bazaars and other family activities following the prayers.

Eid ul-Fitr is the first of the two major Muslim holidays. The second holiday, Eid ul-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), comes near the end of the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca.

WHEN: Thursday, March 19, or Friday, March 20 (Consult local mosques for exact dates and times.) Prayers are held early in the morning. Ask local prayer coordinators for exact dates, times and locations.

WHERE: The Eid prayers are held either in local mosques or in public facilities designed to accommodate large gatherings.

CONTACT: Call local Muslim organizations for details about Eid celebrations. If there are no known contacts in a particular community, contact a CAIR chapter by going to: https://www.cair.com/about_cair/cair-chapters/

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Each year, Muslims come to the prayers in colorful attire representative of different areas of the Islamic world. The prayers themselves are quite visual, with worshipers arranged in neat rows and bowing in prayer in unison. Participants exchange embraces at the conclusion of the prayers.

NOTE: Because this is a religious service, reporters and photographers should dress modestly (pants versus shorts) and consult with the visited mosque about any additional dress code requirements in the actual prayer area, such as a hair scarf for women. Photographers should arrive early to get into position for the best shots. Photographers should not step directly in front of worshipers while they pray or snap rear-angle shots of prostrating worshipers.

President Tinubu’s Govt Is Killing Nigerians – Amaechi Raises Alarm

March 18, 2026

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused the President Bola Tinubu-led government of killing Nigerians.

He made the allegation while reacting to the Monday night bombing incident in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Speaking in a statement on Tuesday, Amaechi lamented that the incumbent government is abysmally incompetent and lacks the basic leadership skills to protect Nigerians.

He insisted that Nigerians cannot continue to mourn and live in fear while Tinubu and his lackeys are at the helm of affairs in the country, living lavishly and ostentatiously.

He wrote, “This government is killing Nigerians. I repeat, President Tinubu’s government is killing Nigerians, literally destroying lives. He has failed in the most sacred duty of protecting the lives of its citizens. The Monday bombings in Maiduguri is not just a tragedy, it is a damning indictment of a leadership that has grown complacent, incompetent, and indifferent to the sufferings and death of Nigerians to ravaging bandits.

“While families mourn and communities live in fear, those in power issue hollow statements and make empty promises. In fact now, they don’t bother to make promises anymore. They just move on as if nothing happened. Tinubu would rather be dining and partying in London while Nigeria burns. They just don’t care!

“How many more lives must be lost before they admit their failure? How many more communities must be shattered and destroyed before they take decisive action? Insecurity has become the daily reality of ordinary citizens, and yet the government continues to stumble, unprepared and unwilling to confront the menace with the seriousness it demands.

“Nigerians deserve safety, peace, and dignity, not negligence and continued excuses. If those in power cannot guarantee that, then they have no business clinging to authority. Leadership is not about rhetoric, it is about responsibility, action, and making the right decisions for the good of the people. Right now, this government has abandoned that responsibility, and the nation is paying the price.”

He sympathised with the people of Borno state, the victims of the bombings and their innocent families “whose lives have now been shattered because of Tinubu’s government failure to protect them,” adding that enough is enough and President Tinubu should resign as he has failed woefully to perform his basic responsibility of protecting lives and property of Nigerians

Amaechi reminded the government that the people will not be silenced, nor will they accept to live in continued fear. “One day, the people will rise and resist incompetence, reclaim their right to live in peace and safety. Only then will the government realise that the people’s voice is stronger than bombs, and failed leadership.”

Borno: Tinubu More Obsessed With Crushing Opposition Than Fixing Insecurity – Atiku

March 17, 2026

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the recent bomb explosion in Borno State, expressing deep concern over the return of deadly attacks in the region.

In a post shared on 𝕏, Atiku said he felt sad about the fresh wave of violence, saying that the situation is bringing back memories of 2014 when insurgents were at their peak in Nigeria.

He pointed to the renewed cases of suicide bombings and attacks on both civilians and security personnel as a worrying development.

He praised Nigerian soldiers for their efforts but called on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rethink its approach to security.

According to him, the rise in attacks could weaken public trust in the government’s ability to keep citizens safe.

Atiku also said many Nigerians are not satisfied with official statements that condemn attacks, adding that people are more interested in visible action and improved security results.

The former presidential candidate accused the government of focusing more on political opponents instead of dealing with the growing security crisis.

He said terrorists continue to strike despite claims that strong directives have been given to security agencies.

He added that insecurity affects everyone, regardless of political views, and warned that ignoring honest concerns by tagging them as political could worsen the situation.

Atiku further described the pain of families affected by the attacks, especially in Maiduguri, saying many citizens are questioning why such incidents are happening in areas earlier declared safe.

He also raised concerns about the condition of soldiers, claiming they are battling insurgents with poor equipment while the president is away on an official trip to United Kingdom.

Atiku concluded by saying the government must take the security situation more seriously, warning that failure to protect lives could affect public trust and leadership credibility.

Mutfwang spends N300m on palliatives for Ramadan

March 18, 2026

The Plateau State government has spent over N300 million in buying palliatives for the support of the Muslim Ummah religious obligation at Ramadan and Eid-el-Firtir season.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Intergovernmental Affairs, Abubakar Yahaya Kanam, who doubled as the chairman Sallah Palliative Distribution Committee, stated this yesterday in Jos.

The amount was spent in buying  mostly food items like rice, millets and spaghett, which were distributed to members across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Kanam said the beneficiaries were vulnerable women, youths, and clerics.

He said 24 liaison officers appointed by Mutfwang from various constituencies of the local government were also engaged in profiling of beneficiaries to enhance transparency and accountability of the palliative distribution.

“We are here as the usual norm that every Sallah the good government of the Plateau State is to celebrate and show mercy, love and benevolence to Muslim of Plateau State by giving us the Muslim of Plateau State some palliative to share showing that we are together as one.

“This year’s distribution was quite significant and different, that every Christmas we realised that the Muslims Ummah also benefited from the Christmas palliative initiative. Christians will benefit from it too,” Kanam stated.

According to him, “we are not God, so we cannot capture everybody. But, what we can do as a government. We should try as much as possible to do it honestly and diligently.

“As you can see, these grains are not just the only grains here. We are going stage by stage so that we should make sure we capture almost virtually everybody.”

He appealed to the Muslim Ummah to be united and accord loyalty and support for the administration in the state, noting that the palliative came from the taxpayers’ money.

APC Lagos urges sustained spiritual purification

by Tajudeen Adebanjo

March 18, 2026

Chair of APC in Lagos State, Cornelius Ojelabi, has urged Muslims to sustain the spiritual purification and discipline observed during the fasting period.

Ojelabi spoke yesterday at the party’s third annual Ramadan lecture at Ikeja, Lagos.

Ojelabi, represented by APC Vice Chair (Lagos Central), Muyideen Daramola, urged Muslims to refrain from habits that can diminish gains of fast.

He identified three types: those who begin but do not complete the fast, those who start and drop midway, and those who stay to the end.

“We thank Allah for granting us the mercy to witness this. I pray He preserves us to the end of Ramadan,” he said.

Ojelabi noted the theme was timely and relevant, urging attendees to apply the lessons.

“Habits stopped during fast should not return,” he said.

Chair, Ramadan Lecture Planning Committee, Moshood Mayegun, mobilised members ahead of future polls, urging them to obtain their PVCs and encourage others to participate in the process.

Eid-el-Fitr: Security on high alert nationwide after Borno blasts

March 18, 2026

Gift Habib, Salisu Kabuga, Hussaini Ibrahim, Toheeb Omotayo, Tukur Muntari, Animasahun Salman, Solomon Odeniyi

Security agencies have heightened security, mobilising thousands of personnel across the nation ahead of this weekend’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

Personnel are to be stationed at Eid prayer grounds, mosques, shopping malls, recreational centres, markets, motor parks, amusement parks, and areas housing critical national infrastructure.

The massive mobilisation of security personnel, especially in Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, comes on the back of Monday’s multiple bomb explosions in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, which killed 23 people while 108 others were injured.

This comes as the Sultan of Sokoto asked Muslims to look out for the crescent that would mark the end of Ramadan, while the Federal Government declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid el Fitr and signal the beginning of Shawwal.

A statement released by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and signed by its Secretary General, Prof Emeritus Is-haq Oloyede, said Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH, has been set aside for the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal.

It added that any Muslim who sights the crescent should report the sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultanate Council for confirmation.

“Muslims who sight the new moon should report the sighting to the nearest district or village head, who will in turn communicate the information to His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, for further announcement,” the statement said.

The statement added, “If the crescent is sighted, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of NSCIA, would be informed either directly or through the already advertised Muslim traditional rulers or members of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC) for further action.

“If the crescent is not sighted on Wednesday, the ‘Id shall be observed on Friday. Therefore, all Muslims are enjoined to discharge their religious obligations, including paying Zakatul Fitr on behalf of all their family members and dependants.”

The NSCIA also condemned what it termed unprovoked attacks by the United States and Israel on the sovereign Islamic Republic of Iran on February 28, 2026.

“It is clear to all that the attacks were a flagrant violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

“Apart from targeting and killing the Supreme Leader of the country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and a number of his family members, the attacks also resulted in the death of close to 200 innocent school girls in the Southern part of the country,” it said.

The massive deployment ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr saw the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deploy 4,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The corps also deployed personnel across its commands in Kano, Kwara, Jigawa, among others.

Commander of the NSCDC, in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, said apart from deployment of personnel to vulnerable locations, undercover officers had also been deployed for covert operations and surveillance.

The statement read, “The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Federal Capital Territory Command, Olusola Odumosu, has ordered the deployment of 4,000 personnel across the nooks and crannies of the FCT to enforce law and order as well as ensure a peaceful Eid-el-Fitr.

“The deployment, which covers specialised units including the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosive Counter-Terrorism Unit, and Agro Rangers, aims to secure the lives and property of residents, as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure before, during, and after the festival.”

Odumosu instructed all area commanders and divisional officers to ensure a strong security presence in their respective councils.

“All hands must be on deck. I will not tolerate any form of breaches; ensure your personnel comply adequately,” he said.

He further charged officers to maintain discipline, uphold good conduct, and work in coordination with other security agencies.

In Jigawa, the NSCDC deployed 1,450 personnel to ensure a peaceful Salah celebration in the state.

According to a statement on Tuesday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Badaruddeen Tijjani, said, “The deployment is part of efforts to forestall security breaches. We will ensure a secure environment before, during, and after Salah.

“We will be vigilant to prevent any incidents. The deployment aims to strengthen security presence and prevent criminal activities.

“Special teams, including Anti-Vandal and Disaster Management Units, are on high alert to protect national assets and public facilities,” it added.

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Kabiru Ingawa, further directed officers to intensify patrols and surveillance.

“The deployment is aimed at safeguarding lives and property throughout the celebrations,” Ingawa said.

He stressed that the NSCDC would protect critical national assets and farmlands, emphasising that “our Agro-Rangers Squad is on standby to prevent any attacks on farms.”

The Kano State command of the NSCDC deployed over 3,400 personnel across the state to ensure security before, during, and after the Eid-el-Fitr.

The State Commandant, Hassan Agalama, in a statement on Tuesday, by the command’s PRO, Ibrahim Abdullahi, noted that the deployment was part of proactive measures to guarantee peaceful festivities and protect critical national assets.

According to him, operatives had been strategically positioned at Eid praying grounds, recreational centres, markets, motor parks, and other vulnerable public locations across Kano State.

“We have deployed over 3,400 personnel across the state as part of proactive measures to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free Eid-el-Fitr celebration,” Agalama said.

He added that special attention had been given to the protection of critical infrastructure, including power installations, water facilities, telecommunication masts, and other government assets.

Agalama said intelligence and surveillance units had been strengthened, while rapid response teams were placed on high alert to address emergencies.

“Our operatives have been strategically stationed at Eid grounds, markets, motor parks, and other public places, while rapid response teams are on standby to respond promptly to any security threat,” he added.

He urged residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security operatives, and report any suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities.

He also advised parents and guardians to caution their wards against engaging in unlawful acts during the celebrations.

A sister agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, deployed no fewer than 1,889 personnel and operational logistics for the 2026 Eid-el-Fitri Special Patrol Operations.

This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday by the Sector Command’s PRO, Abdullahi Labaran.

Labaran said the operation was expected to commence from Tuesday, 17th to 22nd March 2026.

Also, the Kwara State command of the NSCDC deployed 2,350 operatives across the state to ensure a safe and peaceful Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

A statement by the command’s PRO, Ayoola Shola, said the State Commandant of the force, Bala Bodinga, approved the deployment as part of proactive measures to protect critical national assets, prevent crime, and safeguard residents before, during, and after the celebrations.

“The Kwara State Commandant of the NSCDC, Bala Bawa Bodinga, has approved the deployment of 2,350 operatives to provide robust protection of critical national assets and the safety of residents throughout the Eid celebration,” the statement read.

“The deployment covers all sixteen (16) local government areas of the state, with personnel drawn from specialised units, including the Armed Squad, Operational Harmony, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Anti-Vandal Unit, and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive Unit,” it added.

The statement explained that the operation was intelligence-driven and anchored on detailed threat assessments to identify flashpoints, high-risk corridors, and other vulnerable locations across the state.

“The operation is underpinned by credible intelligence and detailed threat mapping, with priority attention accorded to flashpoints, high-risk corridors and other sensitive locations to ensure maximum effectiveness and public safety.

“Area Commanders and Divisional Officers have been mandated to sustain aggressive patrols, strengthen surveillance and implement proactive response measures within their Areas of Responsibility.”

The NSCDC also reaffirmed its commitment to inter-agency collaboration, noting that it would work closely with other security outfits, local vigilantes, and community stakeholders to enhance security coordination.

“The NSCDC will coordinate closely with other security agencies, local vigilantes, and community members to ensure comprehensive coverage, rapid response, and uninterrupted public safety during the festive period.”

In Edo, the NSCDC deployed more than 2,000 personnel across the state to ensure security before, during and after the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The state Commandant of the corps, Mr Saidi Akintayo, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists in Benin.

Akintayo described the move as part of proactive measures to guarantee a peaceful and hitch-free celebration.

“We have deployed more than 2,000 personnel drawn from our specialised units across the three senatorial districts to ensure a hitch-free Eid-el-Fitr celebration,

“These units include the Armed Squad, Female Special Squad, Counter Terrorism, Disaster Management, and the Commandant’s Monitoring Team,” he said.

He added that the personnel had been strategically positioned across the state to adequately secure public places such as markets, recreational centres, prayer grounds, highways and other vulnerable points.

Akintayo revealed that the command would work closely with other security agencies to ensure comprehensive coverage and rapid response to emergencies.

“We are working in synergy with other security agencies to guarantee public safety and ensure a peaceful festive period for all residents.

”Area Commanders and Divisional Officers have been directed to intensify patrols, strengthen intelligence gathering, step up surveillance, and adopt proactive security measures within their jurisdictions,” he further said.

Bank Indonesia Empowers Boarding Schools to Control Inflation

March 17, 2026

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bank Indonesia Representative Office in Bengkulu has launched the "Wakaf Trendi" program, an initiative designed to empower Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to manage competitive business units as a means of controlling inflation.

This year, the central bank has expanded the program's scope to include three pesantren as beneficiaries, a significant jump from the single pilot project initiated last year.

"Wakaf Trendi is part of Bank Indonesia's innovation to encourage productivity and empowerment within Islamic boarding schools," said Wahyu Yuwana Hidayat, Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office in Bengkulu, on Monday, March 16, 2026.

He explained that the program, standing for Trengginas, Edukatif, Mandiri (Agile, Educative, Independent), focuses on fostering food self-sufficiency among students. Through a digital wallet system, Bank Indonesia collects public funds which are then channeled to the schools to develop productive ventures in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Specifically, this year’s funds will support chili cultivation on two hectares of land at the Entrepreneur Hafidz Qur'an Islamic Boarding School in Kepahiang Regency. Meanwhile, the Al-Karim Islamic Boarding School in Bengkulu City will manage 400 laying hens, and the Abdurrahman Al-Fatih Islamic Boarding School will focus on hydroponic pakcoy and lettuce cultivation.

According to Wahyu, developing these business units is a strategic move to address production bottlenecks, particularly in the food sector. The vision is for these schools to move beyond meeting internal consumption to synergizing with the broader market to satisfy community demand.

He added that a key strategic target for this production is supporting national government initiatives. "In addition to the domestic market and the needs of the schools themselves, their output will be synergized to support the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG)," he continued.

Bank Indonesia remains optimistic that by promoting economic self-sufficiency, these educational institutions can bolster the public food supply. Surplus production from livestock, fisheries, and plantations is expected to be absorbed by the general market, helping stabilize prices.

Wahyu revealed that the realization of the Wakaf Trendi fund collection for 2026 shows a strong positive trend. To date, collections have reached Rp100,050,000, a drastic increase from last year’s recorded total of Rp33,000,000.

Previously, waqf funds were allocated to productive sectors via the Muhammadiyah network, focusing on livestock and palm oil. This year, with an average allocation of roughly Rp30 million per school, the central bank is prioritizing the expansion of production capacity at each selected institution.

"Although we have already surpassed one hundred million, this figure could still increase as the collection process remains open. These funds will be fully utilized to enhance the production capacity of these boarding schools," he concluded.

Poultry in motion: PM Anwar contributes 14,000 chickens for Raya, reaches 29 mosques in Permatang Pauh

17 Mar 2026

BUKIT MERTAJAM, March 17 — A total of 14,000 chickens were distributed to residents in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency through 29 mosques in the area as preparation to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Permatang Pauh Madani People’s Service Centre officer Ahmad Zhafri Mohd Nazri said the contribution is an initiative by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in collaboration with the National Action Council on Cost of Living (Naccol).

“The distribution was carried out at 29 mosques and Yayasan Aman, with each mosque receiving an average of between 500 and 700 chickens for distribution, depending on the size of its congregation.

“The reason this year’s distribution is less than the 28,000 chickens distributed last year is that the programme could not be held on Friday as in previous years, which usually sees a higher turnout of recipients after Friday prayers,” he told reporters after the ceremony to present the contribution to the public at Yayasan Aman here today.

Yayasan Aman provided 400 chickens, and the distribution was completed within 15 minutes.

Mohd Zhafri said the initiative is the Prime Minister’s way of easing people’s burden, particularly as they prepare to celebrate Aidilfitri.

Seventy-year-old Siti Zaitun Mustafa expressed her gratitude upon receiving the chicken contribution and described it as somewhat helpful in reducing her expenses, particularly in preparing festive meals.

“I knew about this assistance from my neighbour and from the mosque notification. That’s why I came.

“Alhamdulillah, with such assistance, I can save a little for the Raya celebration,” she said while thanking Anwar for the initiative. — Bernama

East Java police say mosque blast site now secure

March 17, 2026

Jember, E Java (ANTARA) - East Java Police Chief Nanang Avianto said the situation is under control after a mosque explosion in Jember, with no fatalities reported and investigations ongoing, authorities said on Tuesday.

Security forces moved swiftly to secure the site, deploying joint teams from local police and the provincial command, including identification, forensic, bomb disposal, and criminal investigation units.

Authorities said the area has been secured, with continued sterilization efforts to ensure safety, while preliminary findings indicate the blast caused no casualties.

Police urged residents in the nearby housing complex to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could trigger public anxiety or unrest.

They said routine activities during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan could continue as usual, assuring the public of an ongoing security presence following the incident.

In connection with the blast, East Java Police found several chemical substances during a crime scene investigation at the mosque in the Pesona Raya Regency housing complex in Patrang on Tuesday.

“We must proceed carefully and not rush the investigation to ensure accurate results, as there are indications of chemical materials at the site,” Nanang said at a press conference in Jember.

He added that collecting evidence requires specialized equipment and precision, given the suspected presence of hazardous substances at the location.

Officers will remain stationed at the mosque until conditions are fully stable and no longer require heightened security measures, Nanang said.

Police lines will be removed once the investigation is completed, allowing the mosque to reopen for worship as Ramadan approaches its final days.

A local resident, Teguh Muharjono, said the explosion occurred near the end of evening tarawih prayers, with the imam continuing the final prayer cycle.

After prayers ended, worshippers rushed out as the blast was traced to the men’s ablution area, he said.

A metal box believed to be the source of the explosion was typically used to store sarongs, according to the witness account.

Some residents remain traumatized and hesitant to return to the mosque following the Monday night blast, hoping conditions normalize ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

Anwar wins bid to strike out legal challenge over PM and Tambun MP posts, judge rules Waytha Moorthy has no case

18 Mar 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 — The High Court here today allowed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s bid to strike out an originating summons filed by P. Waytha Moorthy challenging his appointment as Prime Minister and Tambun Member of Parliament (MP).

Judge Alice Loke Yee Ching, in allowing the application, held that the court has no jurisdiction to entertain the summons, as any challenge to an election must be brought by way of an election petition.

“The summons is unsustainable and unarguable. The plaintiff (Waytha Moorthy) has no prospect of success. Accordingly, the striking-out application is allowed and the summons is struck out,” she said.

Justice Loke further said that the court, in hearing the originating summons, was not sitting as an election court, nor was the action commenced by way of an election petition.

She made it clear that Section 33 (1) of the Election Offences Act 1954 provides that an election petition must be tried by an election judge, defined as a High Court judge nominated by the Chief Justice to hear such matters.

Right after the ruling, counsel Ranjit Singh, appearing for Anwar, sought costs of RM125,000, arguing that the plaintiff’s action, as a senior lawyer, constituted an abuse of process.

“So, if it is tried in law, and you are a senior lawyer bringing this action, and my lady finds that there is not only no cause of action,  but that it constitutes an abuse of process, we are entitled to costs as of right.

“My lady, my client (Anwar) was appointed Prime Minister in 2022, while the summons was only filed last year,” he said.

Meanwhile, counsel S. Karthigesan, representing Waytha Moorthy, submitted that the matter concerned the national and public interest, not a personal matter, and urged the court to make no order as to costs.

The court then ordered Waytha Moorthy to pay RM80,000 in costs to Anwar.

Waytha Moorthy attended today’s proceedings.

On Aug 12 last year, Waytha Moorthy filed the originating summons seeking declarations that Anwar’s appointment as Prime Minister on Nov 24, 2022, was unconstitutional, null and void, and also sought declarations that Anwar’s election as the Tambun MP in the 15th General Election was likewise unconstitutional and invalid.

Following that, in Oct last year, Anwar filed an application to strike out the summons on the grounds that it contravened various mandatory procedural and constitutional as well as statutory requirements prescribed for challenging or questioning election results.

He also claimed that the summons was baseless, disclosed no reasonable cause of action and constituted an abuse of the court process. — Bernama

Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid celebrates as over 19,500 KEMAS kindergarten pupils lead tarawih prayers, showcasing early Quranic education success.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed pride in a national programme that saw 19,533 young children confidently lead tarawih prayers.

The pupils, from 2,773 Community Development Department (KEMAS) kindergartens nationwide, performed the prayers on the 27th night of Ramadan.

Ahmad Zahid said the event reflects the effectiveness of the KEMAS Pre-Tahfiz Programme in nurturing a love for the Quran from an early age.

He described the sight of young children leading prayers as a heart-warming symbol of early education rooted in strong religious values.

“This is among the outcomes of efforts through the KEMAS Pre-Tahfiz Programme in shaping a generation that is close to the Quran,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Alhamdulillah, what we have worked on is beginning to show results.”

The Minister of Rural and Regional Development credited the achievement to the dedication of KEMAS teachers and strong parental support.

He expressed appreciation to all parties for ensuring KEMAS education emphasises character building and religious values beyond academics.

IHRF Condemns Bombing of Kabul Drug Rehab Hospital, Calls for International Investigation

March 18, 2026

MAHARASHTRA: The International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) has strongly condemned the bombardment of a drug rehabilitation hospital by the Pakistani Military Regime in Kabul, describing the attack as a grave violation of humanitarian principles.

In a statement on Tuesday, the organization said the hospital, which was treating individuals suffering from drug addiction, was targeted despite serving vulnerable civilians seeking medical care and recovery.

“Facilities dedicated to treatment, rehabilitation, and humanitarian care must never become targets in any conflict or security operation,” the statement said.

According to the IHRF, patients receiving treatment in such institutions represent some of the most vulnerable members of society, individuals striving to rebuild their lives with dignity.

The foundation expressed deep concern over reports that many of those killed or injured were unarmed civilians undergoing treatment at the facility.

The International Human Rights Foundation called for an independent international investigation into the incident, accountability for those responsible, and immediate measures to ensure the protection of medical and rehabilitation centers.

“Attacks on medical institutions violate the most fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and human rights norms,” the statement added. “The world must not remain silent when places of healing are turned into sites of tragedy.”

China Continues Efforts to Broker Ceasefire Between Afghanistan and Pakistan

March 18, 2026

By: Azar Rasikh

China says it will continue its diplomatic efforts to help achieve a ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan as tensions and clashes between the two neighboring countries persist. The statement was made by the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, emphasizing Beijing’s role in encouraging dialogue and restraint between the two sides.

According to the statement, China has been actively working through diplomatic channels to reduce tensions and encourage peaceful negotiations. Among the most notable efforts were recent discussions among Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, and the foreign ministers of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Chinese officials also pointed to the diplomatic visits of Yue Xiaoyong, China’s special envoy for Afghanistan, who has been traveling between the two countries as part of mediation efforts aimed at preventing further escalation.

In its statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed hope that both Afghanistan and Pakistan would remain calm and exercise restraint during this tense period. Beijing urged the two neighbors to engage in direct, face-to-face talks as soon as possible, to reach an immediate ceasefire, and to resolve their disputes through dialogue rather than military confrontation. Chinese officials emphasized that continued fighting would only worsen the situation and threaten stability in the wider region.

The call for calm comes at a time when clashes between Afghan and Pakistani forces have intensified along their shared border. The two countries have been experiencing one of the most serious escalations in recent years, involving cross-border airstrikes, artillery fire, and accusations of supporting militant groups. Recent reports indicate that hostilities intensified after Pakistan launched airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan in February 2026, targeting what it described as militant hideouts. Afghan authorities, however, said the attacks resulted in civilian casualties and condemned them as violations of Afghan sovereignty.

The broader tensions are part of a longer pattern of security disputes between the two countries. Afghanistan and Pakistan share a long and contested border known as the Durand Line, which has historically been a source of political disagreement and security incidents. Armed clashes and cross-border accusations have occurred periodically over the years, but the situation has become more volatile since 2024, when a series of military confrontations began along the frontier.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghan authorities of allowing militants from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to operate from Afghan territory and carry out attacks inside Pakistan. Afghan officials have denied these accusations and have argued that Pakistan’s military operations inside Afghanistan violate the country’s territorial integrity. These competing claims have contributed to a cycle of retaliation that has periodically escalated into armed clashes.

In recent weeks, the conflict has drawn increased international attention. Reports indicate that the violence has resulted in civilian casualties on both sides of the border and raised concerns about regional stability. The United Nations and several governments have called for restraint and urged both countries to resolve their differences through diplomacy rather than military force.

China’s mediation efforts reflect its growing diplomatic role in regional security affairs. Beijing maintains close economic and strategic relations with Pakistan and has also expanded political and economic ties with Afghanistan in recent years. As a result, China has positioned itself as a potential mediator capable of communicating with both governments. Analysts say China has a strong interest in preventing conflict between the two neighbors because instability could threaten regional connectivity projects and economic initiatives linked to Beijing’s Belt and Road strategy.

Chinese officials have stressed that Afghanistan and Pakistan are neighboring countries that cannot change their geography and therefore must find ways to coexist peacefully. During a recent conversation with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, Wang Yi said that dialogue and consultation are the only realistic ways to resolve disputes and that military solutions would only deepen tensions and create further instability in the region.

The Chinese government has therefore encouraged both sides to restart negotiations as quickly as possible. According to Chinese diplomats, the priority at this stage is to prevent further escalation and restore calm along the border. They also hope that renewed diplomatic engagement could pave the way for broader cooperation on security and economic issues.

The ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have significant implications for the wider region. Both countries play important roles in regional trade routes and security dynamics in South and Central Asia. Prolonged conflict between them could disrupt cross-border trade, affect economic development projects, and create humanitarian challenges for communities living near the border.

For Afghanistan in particular, the situation has social and economic consequences. Border communities often depend on cross-border trade and local markets for their livelihoods, and continued fighting can disrupt daily life, force families to relocate, and damage infrastructure. In addition, persistent instability can discourage foreign investment and slow economic recovery in a country that has already faced decades of conflict.

At the same time, diplomatic initiatives such as China’s mediation efforts demonstrate that regional powers are increasingly involved in trying to prevent the conflict from escalating further. If successful, these efforts could create an opportunity for renewed dialogue between Kabul and Islamabad and potentially reduce tensions that have plagued the two neighbors for years.

In conclusion, China’s continued diplomatic engagement reflects a growing international concern about the rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. By encouraging restraint, facilitating communication between leaders, and supporting direct negotiations, Beijing hopes to help the two countries reach a ceasefire and resolve their differences peacefully. The success of these efforts could have far-reaching implications not only for relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan but also for stability and economic development across the broader region.

Pakistan Airstrikes on Kabul Hospital Kill Recovering Addicts, Spark Outrage

March 18, 2026

A wave of intense domestic and international condemnation has erupted following late-night airstrikes allegedly carried out by the Pakistani military on residential areas and a drug rehabilitation center in the Afghan capital, Kabul. The bombings, which took place during the 28th night of the holy month of Ramadan, have reportedly resulted in massive civilian casualties, primarily among recovering addicts seeking treatment.

The attacks have sparked furious reactions across Afghanistan, uniting the ruling Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, former political leaders, and globally recognized sports icons in their denunciation of Islamabad. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has explicitly threatened military retaliation, marking a severe escalation in the already fraught relationship between the two neighboring countries.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Chief Spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, took to X (formerly Twitter) to vehemently condemn the airstrikes. He confirmed that the Pakistani military regime targeted a hospital for drug addicts, leaving a large number of civilian patients dead or wounded. Calling the strike, a “crime against humanity” and a blatant violation of accepted international principles, Mujahid issued a stark warning. He declared that the era of diplomacy and negotiations with Islamabad has ended, vowing that the Islamic Emirate will “take revenge” for the unprovoked aggression.

The tragedy has resonated deeply within Afghan society, prompting an unprecedented and unified outcry from the nation’s beloved sporting figures. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the national cricket team have universally condemned the attack. In an official statement, the ACB labeled the bombing a massive crime committed during the holy month of Ramadan, asserting that Pakistan has taken hundreds of lives and demanding that the international community break its silence.

Mirwais Ashraf, Chairman of the ACB, condemned the targeting of innocent civilians in a medical facility, calling it a clear violation of humanitarian principles. He noted that such oppressive actions will only fortify the unity and resolve of the Afghan people.

Globally renowned Afghan cricketers also utilized their vast social media platforms to express their grief and anger. Star spinner Rashid Khan decried the targeting of residential areas and hospitals as a “war crime.” Expressing his heartbreak over the loss of innocent lives during Ramadan, Khan urged the United Nations and human rights organizations to investigate the tragedy and hold the perpetrators accountable. Fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq drew a stark parallel between the incident and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, stating that it has become “very difficult to differentiate between the military regimes of Israel and Pakistan.”

Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi mourned the victims, noting the tragic irony that these individuals were actively trying to return to a normal life before perishing under Pakistani bombs. T20 Captain Ibrahim Zadran and fast bowler Wafadar Momand echoed these sentiments, with Momand emphasizing that hospitals are sanctuaries for saving lives, not shedding blood, making the attack an assault on all human ethics.

The political establishment, both current and former, also presented a united front. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned the bombings, warning Pakistan’s military rulers that such aggressive policies will fail to achieve their objectives and will ultimately destabilize the region to Pakistan’s own detriment. He urged Islamabad to reassess its flawed policies and engage with Afghanistan based on civilized neighborly principles. Similarly, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, former Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, denounced the strikes as a violation of international law, though he advocated for resolving disputes through dialogue.

Internationally, the incident has drawn sharp rebuke. India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a strong statement describing the airstrike on the Kabul hospital as a “cowardly and anti-human act.” New Delhi characterized the attack as a clear violation of Afghan sovereignty and a severe threat to regional peace and stability, calling for global accountability and pledging its full support to Afghanistan.

Former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, also expressed deep concern over the civilian death toll. While urging the international community to provide humanitarian aid, Khalilzad expressed hope that the Taliban (Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) would react wisely while reconsidering their policies toward Pakistan. He noted that many conscientious Pakistanis are likely outraged by the reckless and inhumane decisions of their military leadership, though he lamented that the current Pakistani government routinely ignores public sentiment.

Commentators and analysts in the region view the strikes as part of a broader, Western-aligned strategy by the Pakistani regime to sow discord and permanent enmity between the Muslim populations of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Despite the heavy political friction caused by what many describe as a “mercenary regime” in Islamabad, observers maintain that the fraternal, faith-based bond between the Afghan and Pakistani people remains resilient against attempts to divide the region.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the Farmers’ Card programme in Tangail Sadar upazila on Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year, on April 14.

In the first phase, financial assistance will be disbursed to 21,500 farmers in 11 upazilas through mobile financial service (MFS).

The decision was made at a meeting of the Farmers’ Card preparing cell held at the Secretariat yesterday afternoon with the premier in the chair, said Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman.

During the meeting, the PM instructed his cabinet members and officials to maintain transparency in identifying farmers and ensure that assistance reaches the actual beneficiaries.

The government is set to roll out the cards under a pre-piloting initiative.

Apart from Tangail, the programme will also cover Panchagarh Sadar and Boda upazila of the district, Shibganj in Bogura, Shailkupa in Jhenaidah, Nesarabad in Pirojpur, Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila, Islampur in Jamalpur, Goalanda in Rajbari, and Juri in Moulvibazar.

Through the card, farmers will be able to buy fertiliser, seeds, pesticides, and animal feed, he added.

Officials concerned believe the initiative would help establish a reliable identification system for farmers across the country. It is also expected to ensure a more transparent and efficient distribution of agricultural subsidies, loans, seeds, and fertilisers.

The PM directed the authorities concerned to gear up the process to prepare the Farmers’ Card to ensure modern and integrated services for farmers across the country, said the additional press secretary.

He stressed on creating a comprehensive database of farmers, ensuring direct delivery of subsidies and incentives, and simplifying agricultural services through digital systems.

Related ministers, state ministers, and advisers, as well as senior officials of the ministries, were present at the meeting.

According to the BNP’s election manifesto, through the card, farmers will be able to access fertilisers, seeds, pesticides, government subsidies, and incentives at fair prices, as well as agricultural machinery at low cost.

Besides, they will receive low-cost irrigation services, easy-term agricultural loans, agricultural insurance, facilities to sell farm produce at fair prices, and agriculture-related training.

Farmers will also be able to receive weather and market information on their phones and access mobile-based crop treatment or advisory services using the card.

Fish and livestock farmers will also receive the benefits. Small businesses linked to the agricultural sector will be included as well.

In every union parishad, a list of genuine farmers eligible for state support will be prepared through discussion.

The BNP-led government, as part of its electoral promises, has launched canal excavation projects, waived agricultural loans up to Tk 10,000, including interest, introduced the Family Card, and begun providing monthly honorariums to religious leaders.”
