Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Urges Muslims To Strictly Follow Guidelines While Offering Sacrifice On Eid-ul-Azha

Prominent
Muslim organisation Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind urged Muslims to strictly follow
government guidelines while offering sacrifice on Eid-ul-Azha
------
June 26, 2023
Prominent Muslim organisation Jamiat
Ulema-e-Hind on June 26 urged Muslims to strictly follow government guidelines
while offering sacrifice on Eid-ul-Azha and not to share pictures of
slaughtered animals on social media.
Eid ul-Azha, also called the festival of
sacrifice, will be celebrated on Thursday.
Muslims across the globe offer a
sacrifice of animals as permitted by law in their respective countries as a
symbol of the willingness and obedience to God that Prophet Ibraham showed in
offering his son Ismael as sacrifice.
In a statement, Jamiat Uleme-e-Hind
chief Maulana Arshad Madani said that in view of the current situation, it is
important that Muslims take precautionary measures while offering the sacrifice
of animals.
He urged them not to share pictures of
slaughtered animals on social media.
Maulana Madani also urged Muslims to
strictly follow the government guidelines while performing Qurbani (sacrifice)
and not to sacrifice prohibited animals.
He urged them to take the administration
into confidence wherever anyone tries to stop the legitimate sacrifice.
Maulana Madani also advised Muslims to
take special care of cleanliness on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha and stressed
that animal waste should not be thrown on the roads, streets and drains, but
buried in a manner that it does not raise any stench.
The Jamiat chief asserted that every
possible effort should be made so that no one gets hurt by the actions of
Muslims.
He also urged people to file a complaint
with the local police station if there is "any kind of provocation by
sectarian elements".

Former Afghanistan President Says Taliban
Has Deprived People Of Their Rights In Name Of Islam

Former president Mohammad Ashraf
Ghani
-----
27-06-23
Former president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani,
who fled Afghanistan after the Taliban entered Kabul on 15 August 2021, has
said national stability in Afghanistan cannot be achieved without the presence
of the Taliban.
In his message on the occasion of
Eid-ul-Adha, Ghani stated that lasting peace and stability would only be
possible if there is a sincere assessment of the Taliban’s treatment over the
past two decades and an acknowledgment of what has happened.
He pointed out that the vengeful
approach of the Taliban has victimized the citizens of Afghanistan.
Ghani stressed the importance of
building trust as a crucial step towards peace.
He added that perhaps the majority of
the Taliban also has understood “the national demand for a transition to stable
security, and the group should bear the responsibility for the consequences if
this goal is not achieved.”
“For achieving this goal, the Taliban
must first make peace within themselves and with Islam, which opposes violence,
and then make peace with the Afghan people,” Ghani said.
The former president criticized the
policies of the Taliban, claiming that their actions contradict the principles
of Islam.
The Taliban has taken the divine right
to punish and have taken away people’s rights in the name of Islam, he said.
“The Taliban has taken the divine rights
of punishment and retribution and has deprived people’s rights under the name
of Islam,” Ghani added.
Ghani also alleged that the Taliban has
exploited Afghanistan’s natural resources, emphasizing that foreign countries
have no right to seize these resources in the absence of a “legitimate
government.”
Ghani also stated that migrants share
the same suffering as their compatriots within Afghanistan.
Without openly naming anyone, Ghani
criticized certain individuals of being corrupt and incompetent, asserting that
he refuses to collaborate with warlords. “I am not ready to take a single step
with the warlords,” he stressed.
He highlighted the political impotence
of the Taliban and the lack of vision demonstrated by some politicians,
suggesting that the resolution of the problem lies beyond their capabilities.
Ghani, who fled Afghanistan in a
helicopter in 2021, says that he is now ready to help prepare a “third road
map” to solve the current situation in Afghanistan and to reach “a legitimate
system” without demanding anything in return.
He added that despite having established
relative security, the Taliban has resorted to violence.
According to Ghani, the Taliban has
chosen the path of “negative” security instead of permanent peace “which cannot
be considered as an achievement.”
People of Afghanistan call Ghani a
“fugitive” after he fled Afghanistan which led to the collapse of the former
security forces and the government – allowing for a total takeover by the
Taliban.

Hundreds Of Thousands Of Pilgrims Scale Mount
Arafat

A Muslim

haj pilgrimage, outside the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, June 27, 2023.

------
Tue Jun 27, 2023
Hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims
crowded Saudi Arabia's Mount Arafat on Tuesday, the climax of a potentially
record-breaking hajj pilgrimage held in fierce summer heat.
As dawn broke, groups of worshippers
recited Koran verses on the rocky rise, where the Prophet Mohammed is believed
to have given his final sermon.
The ritual is the high point of the
annual pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, that officials say could
be the biggest on record after three years of Covid restrictions.
More than 2.5 million pilgrims were
expected to join the hajj, one of the world's largest religious gatherings and
a source of legitimacy for the oil-rich country's royal rulers.
Temperatures soared to 46 degrees
celsius (113 Fahrenheit) on Monday as robed worshippers shielded by umbrellas
journeyed from Mecca to Mina, where they slept in a giant tented city before
the rites at Mount Arafat.
Egyptian schoolteacher Tasneem Gamal
said she was emotionally overwhelmed to arrive at Arafat, whose rituals are a
compulsory part of the pilgrimage.
"I cannot describe my feelings, I
am living a great joy," the 35-year-old woman said.
Gamal is performing the hajj without a
male guardian, a requirement that was shelved by Saudi authorities until 2021.
This year, a maximum age limit has also
been removed, giving thousands of elderly the chance to attend.
Tuesday provides the biggest physical
challenge, as pilgrims will spend hours praying and reciting the Koran on Mount
Arafat and in the surrounding area amid high temperatures.
Unlike Mecca, dotted with hotels and
malls, and the tents of Mina, air-conditioned shelter is scarce.
- 'Blessed' -
As helicopters buzzed overhead, entry
roads were packed with worshippers. Thousands of health workers were on alert
for cases of heat stroke and exhaustion.
The heat risk will be highest from 12:00
pm to 3:00 pm, when outdoor labour is banned in Saudi Arabia between June and
September to protect workers.
After sunset, pilgrims will travel the
short distance to Muzdalifah, halfway between Arafat and Mina, to sleep in the
open air.
The following day, they will gather
pebbles and hurl them at three giant concrete walls in the symbolic
"stoning of the devil" ritual.
The last stop is back at Mecca's Grand
Mosque, where they will perform a final circumambulation of the Kaaba, the
giant black cube that Muslims worldwide pray towards each day.
Heat is not the only risk at hajj, which
has seen multiple crises over the years, including militant attacks and deadly
fires.
In 2015, a stampede killed up to 2,300
people. There have been no major incidents since.
Before heading to Arafat, American
engineer Ahmed Ahmadine said he felt "blessed" to be able to take
part in the pilgrimage.
"I try to focus on praying for my
family and friends, " said the 37-year-old.
"This is an opportunity that will
not be repeated."

West Seeking To Export Corruption To Islamic
Countries: Ansarullah Leader

Leader of
Yemen’s Ansarullah movement Abdul Malik Badreddin al-Houthi
------
2023/06/27
The West is trying to offer wrong and
corrupt training to people, based on materialism, the Yemeni media ‘Al-Masirah’
quoted al-Houthi as saying on Monday.
He also said that the Westerners
destroyed morals and innate human values and in many cases, they did not deal
with the people as humans who have a tendency for perfection and excellence.
The West either assassinates or attracts
people who have the knowledge to serve the Islamic Ummah and the Muslim world,
said the Ansarullah leader.

Sick Vandals Scratch Star Of David Onto Muslim-Owned
Cars On Quiet Residential Street In Lancaster

The Star of
David was etched onto the resident's car
------
26 JUN 2023
Police are investigating after the Star
of David was scratched into Muslim-owned cars on a residential street in
Lancaster overnight.
A resident noticed the vandalism during
a family visit to his home on Bowerham Road - and believes it occurred between
the hours of 9pm on Saturday, June 24 and 9am the following morning. He told
LancsLive the symbol of the Jewish faith had been crudely etched into the
paintwork of his vehicle.
The local, who wishes not to be named,
usually uses his driveway and in view of his Ring doorbell camera - but had
parked on the road while relatives were in town. The family are unsure of who
is responsible for the act but are keen to find any leads.
They said: "It seems to be a
pattern in Lancaster and undertaken by a small group of individuals. Every time
it's happened, it's on Muslim-owned property. We're not sure of the intention
behind it, but it's clearly one religious symbol on another religion's
property."
In March this year, police were called
to Lancaster after two gravestones were sprayed with the Star of David at
Scotforth Cemetery.
Over the weekend, the same symbol was
etched onto the car parked in the Bowerham Road area. According to residents,
two other cars, also owned by Muslims, saw the symbol scratched onto the
paintwork on the same night.
According to the victim, police
confirmed that one of these cars were parked in the Moorgate area of Lancaster
- a 10 minute walk from Bowerham Road.
Locals told LancsLiveBowerham Road is a
"peaceful, and nice area." They added: "Someone is trying to
stoke up fire by inscribing a Jewish religious symbol on Muslim owned property.
It's well known that the Palestine-Israel conflict has been ongoing for many
years and this seems like a mindless attempt at creating tension between the
two communities at a local level."
The resident also added that they've
lived in Lancaster their whole life, but are unaware of any large Jewish
community in the area. However, there is a large Muslim community in Lancaster,
from which members come from all over the world.
They continued: "We're not worried,
it's more annoyance and financial grievances. Also that we feel victimised as a
community - there are a lot of Muslims in Lancaster, from all over the world.
"There's four Mosques in total and
a large population, this could happen to any one of them."

Obama Should Think About How Many Muslim
Countries He Attacked: Indian Defence Minister
26.06.23
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday
slammed former US president Barack Obama's statement about minority rights in
India, saying he should first think about how many Muslim-majority countries
were attacked during his tenure.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday,
Obama reportedly said if India does not protect the rights of “ethnic
minorities”, there is a strong possibility at some point that the country
starts pulling apart.
Interacting with media persons at a
national security conclave here, Singh said Obama should know that the people
of India believe in the concept of 'vasudhaivakutumbakam' and consider all
people as members of one global family.
"He (Obama) should also think about
how many Muslim countries he has attacked (as US president)," Singh told
reporters when asked to react to Obama's remarks.
Singh said India has a secular character
as people of different religions, including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians
live together harmoniously.
"I want to tell you with confidence
that even Muslim countries would not have all the 72 sects of the community. It
is only in India that you will find them all," he said.
The defence minister said that certain
forces across the world are responsible for creating a negative perception of
India. But people should investigate the number of Muslim countries that India
has attacked.
Singh's comments have come a day after
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hit out at Obama, saying his remarks
were surprising as six Muslim-majority countries had faced US
"bombing" during his tenure.
The finance minister alleged that
"organised campaigns" were being run to level "baseless"
allegations on the treatment meted out to minorities in India at the behest of
the Opposition as it cannot electorally defeat the Modi-led BJP.

A month after violence, Muslim families
return to Purola
Jun 27, 2023
Dehradun: More than 20 Muslim families
that fled Purola town in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district nearly a month ago have
returned to their homes as the region inched closer to normalcy after weeks of
communal tension, police said on Monday.
Several members of the minority
community, which comprises less that 2% of the town’s population, were forced
to flee the town following tension over an alleged abduction attempt on a minor
girl by two men, including a Muslim, on May 26.
Many shops run by Muslims in Purola main
market remained shut for nearly three weeks after members of the community were
asked to leave the state by right-wing organisations, who alleged the abduction
was part of a ‘love jihad’ attempt – a claim denied by the minor girl’s uncle,
who is a complainant in the case.
‘Love jihad’ is a term used by
right-wing groups to describe an alleged conspiracy by Muslim men to woo and
seduce Hindu women, although courts and the Union government do not officially
recognise it.
A month after tensions engulfed the
town, police on Monday said the law-and-order situation is normal and more than
20 Muslim families, who fled over safety concerns, have returned to their
homes.
“Over 20 Muslim families who left after
communal tensions have returned. Everything is peaceful here now. The law and
order is intact,” Purola station house officer (SHO) Ashok Kumar said.
Some of the returnees corroborated the
SHO’s comments and expressed satisfaction over normalcy being resumed in the
town.
“Everything feels normal right now, just
like it was earlier. Everything that happened seems like a bad dream. The
police and vyaparmandal (traders union) have been very supportive,” Bablu, who
left the town on June 4 and returned recently, said.
The 40-year-old lives in a rented
accommodation in Purola and runs a salon in the main market. He shifted to
Dehradun with his wife and two children when tensions erupted.
“We left for my sister’s place in
Dehradun on June 4 after I came across a poster pasted on my shop, asking
Muslim traders to vacate the premises. There has always been a sense of
brotherhood among the people here. It was some outside elements who
communalised the atmosphere here,” he said.
Arshad, 22, who also owns a salon in
Purola market, fled to Dehradun last month. “I left for Dehradrun on May 27. My
family lives there. I returned a week ago and subsequently resumed business as
the situation is normal now,” he said.
“Even amid the tension, my landlord did
not ask me to vacate the premises. But I left due to safety concerns. I knew
hate cannot prevail for very long,” he said.
However, some families expressed
apprehensions of discrimination by the majority community.
“We returned because we have been
assured of our safety by the administration. While we have been told that we
won’t be harassed, we fear we will face discrimination by the majority
community,” a Muslim resident said on condition of anonymity.
Another local resident, who also did not
wish to be named, said he was forced to return to the town to earn a living.
“My family was running short of money and for how long can we stay with
relatives. We have a business in Purola and we are ready to resume our life
again,” the resident said.
Brij Mohan Chauhan, president of Purola
Vyapar Mandal, said, “Most Muslim families have returned. They had left on
their own will and returned on their own will. We never had problem with them.
They are free to do trade here. We rather spoke to administration to persuade
them to come back and open their shops.”
Vikas Verma of Bajrang Dal said, “We
will ask locals for their economic boycott. It is the only way to evict them
out of hills permanently. It is necessary if locals want to save their
daughters from love jihad.”
The interfaith tensions trace back to
May 26 after two men, a Muslim and a Hindu, allegedly tried to abduct a
14-year-old girl. Local residents alleged it was a case of ‘love jihad’.
While the two accused – Ubed Khan (24),
a local shopkeeper, and Jitender Saini (23), a motorcycle mechanic – were
arrested on May 27, the incident led to right wing groups holding protests in
several areas and attacking shops and houses of several Muslims.
According to people aware of the
details, the main market roughly consists of 650-700 shops and of these, around
30-40 are run by Muslims.
On May 29, a protest march by right wing
outfits in Purola turned violent after some of the agitators attacked shops and
establishments belonging to the Muslims. A similar protest was held on June 3,
under the banner of Yamuna Ghati Hindu Jagriti Sangathan. Nearly 900 people
took part in the stir.
Posters began to appear across Purola,
asking Muslim traders to leave before a proposed Hindu mahapanchayat – which
was later disallowed by the district administration – on June 15.
Section 144 of CrPC, which prohibits the
gathering of four or more people in a particular area, was enforced for three
days.
On June 17, HT reported that the minor
girl’s uncle said there was no communal angle in the case. “There were attempts
from the first hour to make this a communal issue. Right-wing activists even
prepared a police complaint for us on their own, but the police didn’t accept
it. It was never a love jihad case, but a regular crime. Those that committed
it, are behind bars,” the 40-year-old man,” he said.
Meanwhile, police are yet to file an FIR
in connection with the ransacking of Muslim shops.

Indian Army still silent on Pulwama
mosque row, officer ‘removed’ from duty
27.06.23
Muzaffar Raina
The army maintained silence on
allegations that its soldiers had stormed two mosques in Pulwama in south
Kashmir on Saturday and forced worshippers to chant “Jai Shri Ram” but security
sources confirmed on Monday that an officer had been removed from duty for his
alleged role.
Neither the army nor police have issued
any official statement despite allegations by villagers that have been picked
up by a battery of Kashmiri politicians, including three former chief ministers
Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and Ghulam NabiAzad. The leaders have voiced
concern and sought a probe.
A security official said an “officer”
had been removed from operational duty. But the source did not reveal the officer’s
name or rank.
Altaf Ahmad Bhat, the chairman of a
civil society group in Zaddora village and who described himself as an
eyewitness, had said on Sunday that senior army officers had apologised to the
villagers.
Bhat had added that the officers had informed
the villagers that a major allegedly involved in the incident had been removed.
On Monday, Bhat told TheTelegraph: “A
new major who has taken over visited our village today and expressed regrets
about the incident in front of a crowd. That happened on the lawns of my house.
Several police officers were accompanying him. There was, in fact, a small
protest here after which they came. The media, however, was not allowed to come
inside."
“I told them that we have never seen
such an incident before and it should never happen again,” he added.
The villagers claimed that the officers
assured them that the matter was being investigated and promised action. The
Srinagar-based Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU), an apex body of Islamic
organisations, expressed “serious concern” over the alleged incident and
condemned it. In a statement, the MMUsaid the silence maintained by the
authorities was unacceptable.

Omar, MMU seek action into allegations
of Armymen entering Pulwama mosque
In a statement Monday, the MMU said the

June 27, 2023
Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU), a
conglomerate of over two dozen religious organisations and institutions in
Kashmir, Monday condemned an alleged incident in Zadoora village in South
Kashmir’s Pulwama district, wherein Armymen entered a local mosque and forced
people to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ during pre-dawn prayers on Saturday.
In a statement Monday, the MMU said the
“silence maintained by the authorities in this regard is unacceptable”. The
conglomerate of religious outfits asked the administration to clarify their
position “as the religious sentiments of Muslims of J&K have been badly
hurt”.
Ex-Chief Minister & National
Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah, meanwhile, told reporters in Anantnag:
“It is evident that such an incident has happened. The Imam of the mosque will
not lie…. The person responsible should be identified and given severe
punishment.”

Assam will have fewer Muslim-majority
constituencies, say Opposition leaders
The Election Commission, in its draft
proposal, has effectively limited the number of Muslim-majority Assembly
constituencies to 22 from 29, say the AIUDF and the Congress; Chief Minister
says that the draft delimitation proposals would do what the Assam Accord of
1985 and the NRC could not
June 26, 2023
SREEPARNA CHAKRABARTY
The draft delimitation proposal for
Assam increases the number of seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribes in the
State Assembly to 19 from 16 and that for the Scheduled Castes to nine from
eight, while retaining the total number of Assembly constituencies at 126 and
Lok Sabha constituencies at 14. It also proposes to alter the geographical
boundaries of most constituencies, by eliminating a few and creating some new
ones.
The draft proposal limits the number of
Muslim-majority Assembly constituencies to 22 from the earlier 29, according to
the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
In 90 constituencies, the indigenous
Assamese people would be in majority, while in 10 to 12 seats the Bengali
people would be dominant.
“The Election Commission of India
prepared the delimitation draft in such a way that Muslim representation in the
Assembly can be reduced,” Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, AIUDF MLA, tweeted.
The Election Commission has said that it
has carried out the delimitation exercise as per Section 8(A) of the
Representation of the People Act, 1950, which only allows redrawing of
boundaries and not any increase in the number of constituencies.
This coupled with the fact that data
from the 2001 Census and not 2011 one were used for the delimitation draft
means that any increase in minority population in constituencies reserved for
the SCs and the STs would not be taken into consideration, thus protecting them
from being de-reserved.
The poll body had announced the
delimitation exercise on December 27, 2022. Barely four days after the
delimitation was announced, on December 31, the Assam Cabinet decided to merge
four districts with existing ones and redraw boundaries in 14 places,
effectively reducing the number of districts to 31 from 35. Three of the
districts — Bajali, Biswanath, and Hojai — which were merged with their parent
districts had a sizeable Muslim population. But post-merger, the proportion of
Muslims in the newly merged districts was altered and that, in turn, impacted
the Election Commission’s exercise as it considered these new districts for
redrawing the boundaries of the constituencies.
The leaders argue that there has been a
concerted effort to either “scatter” or “ghettoise” the Muslim vote.
Congress leader ProdyutBordoloi told The
Hindu that there was no territorial contiguity in the proposed draft of
redrawing the boundaries of Assembly constituencies. “They have acted
arbitrarily just like the Radcliffe Line was used during Partition of the
country”. The Radcliffe Line demarcated the boundary between India and Pakistan
during Independence. It as named after British lawyer Sir Cyril Radcliffe, who
had never been to India, but was tasked with drawing it.
The BJP was among 11 political parties
and 71 civil society organisations which the poll body had consulted before
formulating the draft proposal which was released on June 20. The Congress
boycotted the deliberations.

Iran Proposes Formation of Joint Team
with Afghanistan to Address Water Rights Issues
June 27, 2023
Ahmad Vahidi, Iran’s interior minister,
said that the purpose of this joint team would be to ascertain Iran’s rights
and to verify the Taliban’s claims of water shortage.
“The establishment of a joint committee
to evaluate one of the dams named in the treaty was the key matter,” he said.
Earlier, the Taliban authorities claimed
that there was not enough water in the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan due to drought
in the country, and even if there were water, it would not reach Iran.
Earlier, Iran accused the Taliban of
breaking the 1973 water pact by stopping water flow to the province of Sistan
and Baluchistan, which borders southern Afghanistan. This sparked a
deterioration in the relations between the Taliban and Iran.
Afghanistan must annually deliver 850
million cubic metres of water from the Helmand River to Iran in accordance with
the 1973 agreement.
Iran has charged Afghanistan with
breaking the agreement, but Kabul denies the charge. Relations between the two
neighbours have been hampered for years by disputes over the Helmand water
rights issues.

Afghanistan Produced 80% of the World’s
Opium in 2022: UN Report
June 26, 2023
The report released a day before the
International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, said that the
supply and trafficking of illegal drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine,
have increased dramatically worldwide, including in Afghanistan.
The report said, “The 2023 opium harvest
in Afghanistan may see a drastic drop following the Taliban’s ban, as early
reports suggest reductions in poppy cultivation. The benefits of a possible
significant reduction in illicit opium cultivation in Afghanistan in 2023 would
be global. However, it will be at the expense of many farmers in the country
who do not have alternative means of income generation.”
According to recent UNODC figures, there
will be over 296 million drug users worldwide in 2021, a 23% rise from the
previous ten years. Meanwhile, 39.5 million people worldwide have drug use
problems, a 45% increase in ten years.
The World Drug Report 2023 also
emphasises how social and economic injustices both cause and are caused by drug
problems, the destruction that illicit drug economies make to the environment
and human rights, and the increasing dominance of synthetic drugs.
“Time is needed to determine whether
trends hold and the effect that may have on global heroin markets, especially
those sourced by opium from Afghanistan.”
“Afghanistan is also a major producer of
methamphetamines in the region, and the drop in opiate cultivation could drive
a shift towards synthetic drug manufacture, where different actors will
benefit,” The report noted.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime is
dubious about “the connections between the illegal manufacture of heroin and
methamphetamine in the country and whether the two markets will develop in
parallel or whether one will eventually replace the other.”

Afghan Authorities Destroy 100 Tons of
Expired Foodstuff
June 26, 2023
The items were seized from different
parts of the city, according to Afghanistan Food and Drug Authority.
“We call on all businessmen in the
country to first obtain a license from the National Food and Drug Authority and
then familiarize themselves with the principles and regulations of the
authority. They should try to consider the health issue in their work,”
According to Abed Ehsaas, director of the Afghanistan Food and Drug Authority’s
license supervision division.
Last week, the authorities set on fire
1,000 tons of expired medicine and foodstuff in the southern Kandahar province.
“The expired medicine and spoiled
foodstuff weighing 1,000 tonnes have been collected by the provincial
government’s concerned bodies from different shops and drug stores recently and
set ablaze in Police District 12 of Kandahar city today,” the provincial official
said.
According to the officials in Kabul, the
authority is working to establish laboratories in the country’s ports to stop

Increase in Cancer Cases in Western
Afghanistan
June 26, 2023
They said that among 4,000 cancer
patients, 50 per cent of them were women during the last year.
Among 1,000 of these patients or 50 per
cent of the women, had breast cancer, according to the director of the cancer
centre, Dr Farooq Ahamad Sidiqi.
“Almost out of every two cases of women
that come to us, one case is breast cancer. This statistic has increased
compared to the past. We need to know ways to diagnose and treat,” said Sidiqi.
According to him, most women are unaware
of the symptoms of breast cancer, which causes them to wait until the disease
has advanced before seeking medical treatment.
However, women who have breast cancer
complain bitterly about their financial difficulties and claim they cannot
receive treatment.
On the other hand, due to a lack of
diagnostic facilities, medications, technicians and specialized doctors in the
country, most patients are financially stable. They can choose neighbouring
countries, including Pakistan, for medical care.

Hajj pilgrims perform final rituals in
Mecca before heading to Mina
June 26, 2023
MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Pilgrims
streamed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque on Saturday to perform their final rituals
before heading to Mina in preparation for the Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam
and one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
They moved through the white marble
courtyards of Islam’s holiest site to perform the tawaf, the walking circuit
around the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure covered in a black,
gold-embroidered cloth, their fervent recitations ringing through the air.
People on the ground floor closest to
the Kaaba shuffled due to the sheer number of participants. Those on the upper
floors were able to walk more briskly, even run. Pilgrims raised their hands in
supplication, took selfies or video, and phoned their relatives as they
performed the tawaf.
They then walked or ran between two
hills in a re-enactment of Hagar’s search for water for her son, Ismail, a
story that occurs in different forms in Muslim, Christian and Jewish
traditions.
Pilgrims must enter a state of spiritual
purity, known as ihram, for the Hajj.
Men wear seamless white robes, a rule
intended to promote unity among rich and poor. Women cover their body and hair.
In between rituals and the five daily
prayers, which bring the area to a solemn standstill, pilgrims sought out
shade, snacked and flocked to the many shops and air-conditioned malls
encircling the Grand Mosque to relax before the arduous days ahead.
Saudi Arabia has restored full pilgrim
capacity for this year’s Hajj, following three years of dramatically reduced
numbers due to the pandemic, with more than 2 million Muslims expected to take
part.
“I think this year (the) crowd is too
much” said MahboubMorshed, a 42-year-old software engineer from Bangladesh,
referring to the thinner attendance of previous years. “But the government and
this management (Ministry of Hajj and Umrah) is trying to manage this very
smoothly.”

Pilgrims Praise Efforts of the Ministry
of Islamic Affairs in Al-Khayf Mosque
27 Jun, 2023
A number of pilgrims praised the great
efforts exerted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the Ministry of Islamic
Affairs, Call and Guidance at Al-Khayf Mosque in Mina, citing its
implementation of call and guidance programs, which contribute to enabling them
to perform their Hajj rituals easily and correctly.
This came in remarks they made during
their presence in Al-Khayf Mosque in Mina, as part of their Hajj rituals on the
day of Al-Tarwiyah, on the eve of Arafat's great day.
Moroccan pilgrim Mohammed praised the
unprecedented services provided by the Kingdom, indicating that there is no
doubt that serving the Two Holy Mosques is a gift from Allah to this blessed
country, asking Allah Almighty to grant success to those in charge of these
works.
For his part, Ahmed Rashad, a pilgrim
from Egypt, said he arrived in Mina in the morning of the day of Al-Tarwiyah
and gathered and shortened noon and afternoon prayers in Al-Khayf Mosque, where
the integrated services and the atmosphere of faith made everybody feel happy
and comfortable, adding that he benefited a lot from the religious lecture
organized by the ministry in the mosque, citing that it was about the provisions
and virtues of the day of Arafat, asking Allah Almighty to reward those who are
responsible for this.
Meanwhile, Imad, a pilgrim from
Pakistan, explained that the electronic screens installed in Al-Khayf Mosque
and broadcast messages in multiple languages contribute to making the pilgrims
understand the issues that are difficult for them including performing the Hajj
rituals.

Mideast
Sunni MPs: Fragmentation and absence of
leadership persist
27-06-23
In the aftermath of parliamentary
elections over a year ago, the Sunni political landscape in Lebanon continues
to face challenges. Sunni MPs have failed to form a cohesive parliamentary bloc
that could fill the Sunni political void.
Since the elections, the presence of
former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has diminished, while former PM Tamam Salam
has remained silent, although his chances for the same position are still
intact.
In contrast, the standing of former
ambassador Nawaf Salam, whose name was proposed by France, has receded and has
not been endorsed by any Arab country.
Furthermore, former PM Saad Hariri
remains present despite his absence. Speculations and unreliable news suggest
the existence of deputies representing him who will abide by his secret
agreement in the presidential elections.
Some sources confirmed that the
information circulating regarding the visit of the Saudi ambassador to the United
Arab Emirates to Hariri and his discussion about his relocation to Paris is not
accurate or true. The reason behind these rumors is attributed to "some
individuals whose interests lie in promoting SleimanFrangieh's candidacy for
the presidency." The primary objective is to undermine Hariri's
relationship with Saudi Arabia, which "does not require intermediaries to
strengthen it."
However, several indicators support this
idea, such as Hariri's recent appearance at the graduation ceremony of Al-Majd
schools, where he concluded his speech by expressing gratitude to the Custodian
of the Two Holy Mosques and the Saudi Crown Prince. Additionally, a Saudi
citizen's tweet critical of Hariri was deleted after high-ranking officials in
the Kingdom intervened.
Close sources emphasized that Hariri has
not expressed political opinions or stances regarding the Lebanese presidency.
There has been no communication between him and any Sunni MPs before or after
the parliamentary session, and he is not represented by a deputy or a
parliamentary bloc in the Parliament. This conclusion has been confirmed
recently by Ahmad Hariri, who refused to provide any political position related
to the presidential elections.
On the other hand, there is noticeable
Arab discontent with the Sunni position in general, specifically with Sunni
MPs, due to fragmentation and disputes among them. While each faction or bloc
has its representation and reflection, the Sunnis alone suffer from a state of
confusion resulting from the fragmentation of Sunni MPs and the absence of
unified decision-making.
While eight Sunni MPs align themselves
and form an alliance with Hezbollah and Amal Movement, there are approximately
18 MPs who are either independents or part of the "Revolution"
deputies.
Additionally, four Sunni deputies joined
the "Parliamentary Moderation" bloc or the "National
Consensus" bloc, which has one additional member numerically. This makes
Hariri's absence evident in the Sunni arena, as none of the existing figures have
been able to fill the void.
This raised questions about Hariri's
potential return amid growing discussions of an imminent settlement, although
the indications regarding its timing, location, and participants have not been
clarified.
In response to this vacuum, Saudi Arabia
refuses to assume the role of guardian over the Sunni MPs or others. Through
its ambassador, the Kingdom took the initiative to receive them and expressed
support for their meeting at Dar al-Fatwa, which aimed to reunite the deputies
before they scattered.
As a result, each of them now tweets
under the umbrella of their interests, leading to their absence from the
political decision-making scene. Although the parliamentary blocs may agree on
vital life and livelihood issues, they diverge in political choices and differ
on the presidential candidate's name.
Although the parliamentary blocs agree
on vital life and livelihood issues, they diverge in political choices and
differ on the presidential candidate's name. Differences also prevailed among
them regarding selecting a representative to meet with the French presidential
envoy, which prompted Deputy Ahmed Al-Khair to issue a clarifying statement
after the meeting.
The Sunni MPs did not pick up on the
Kingdom's signal regarding the new President of the Republic, which has led
informed sources to reiterate that Saudi Arabia has spoken its word in the
presidential matter. It is no longer fruitful to wait for a secret word from
them. While everyone considers the election of Frangieh without their
"veto" as a Saudi decision, their ambassador, Walid Al-Bukhari,
lifted this "veto" but specified the characteristics of the next
President, which the Lebanese people must choose.
It is noteworthy that Al-Bukhari did not
include Frangieh in his recent tour of officials, although he received him at
his residence in Yarze. The sources pointed out that several political parties
are making more efforts to open a window with the Kingdom, but their attempts
have proven unsuccessful.

[26/June/2023]
BEIRUT June 26.2023 (Saba) - The

'Sad Eid': Muslim feast a distant dream
in war-torn Sudan
27/06/2023
The conflict, now in its third month,
has brought death and turmoil and displaced millions in the country that was
already poverty-stricken before the fighting erupted.
Like many Khartoum residents, Hanan Adam
fled with her six children when the battles broke out in mid-April between the
regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Now living at a makeshift camp south of
the city, her family is trying to celebrate Eid far from home and without much
joy.
"Under these conditions, Eid will
be sad," she told AFP from the camp in Al-Hasaheisa, about 120 kilometres
(75 miles) from the capital.
Not a day goes by without her children,
aged between two and 15, asking when they will return home, she said.
Well before the conflict began,
two-thirds of Sudan's population was living below the poverty line, and one in
three relied on humanitarian aid to make ends meet, according to UN figures.
In past years, those Sudanese Muslims
who could afford it would slaughter an animal, in reference to the story of the
lamb that God provided the prophet Abraham for sacrifice in order to spare his
son Ismail.
However, this year meat is a rare luxury
as the war has disrupted daily life and trade, shuttered markets and banks, and
left millions trapped inside their homes, running low on bare essentials.
'Unattainable dream'
We cannot even buy mutton," said
Mawaheb Omar, a mother of four who has refused to abandon her Khartoum home
despite the gun battles and air strikes.
Eid will be "miserable and
tasteless" this year, she added.
Omar Ibrahim, who lives with his three
children in Khartoum's Shambat district, said the rituals of Eid have become an
"unattainable dream".
Khartoum has been the main battleground
of the conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander
Mohamed HamdanDaglo.
The RSF has announced a unilateral Eid
ceasefire, but many Sudanese are wary after a series of previous truce pledges
were all quickly violated by both sides.
"Will the guns be silent for
Eid?", asked Ibrahim.
The war has also raged in Sudan's
cattle-raising regions: Darfur and Kordofan, which were already among the
country's poorest before the war.
Mohammed Babiker, a livestock trader in
Wad Madani, 200 kilometres south of the capital, said he used to bring his
animals to the capital and elsewhere to sell for Eid.
But now "herders can no longer
bring their cattle," he told AFP, surrounded by a flock of sheep on one of
the city's main streets.
Othman Mubarak, another trader, said
this year he has "sold nothing" in Khartoum.
"The Feast of Sacrifice is the time
of year when we would make the most sales," he said. "But this time
my colleagues and I are forcibly unemployed."
'No income'
n Sudan's north, which has so far been
largely spared by the war, Abdallah al-Nemir gathered his sheep to sell at the
Wad Hamed market, some 150 kilometres from Khartoum.
"We have sheep to sell, but people
don't have money, so we don't make sales," he told AFP. "People have
no income because of the war."
Khartoum has placed civil servants on
open-ended leave, and many are now struggling to meet their basic needs.
"The war has affected them, they
have not received their salaries and will not receive them for a while,"
Moawiya Mohammed, another livestock trader, told AFP.
"The situation is difficult and the
purchasing power is weak."
Sheep are being sold this year for
between $175 and $240, down from $300 for the biggest ones last year.
Civil servant ImadMahieddine, who was
among those wandering through the Wad Madani livestock market, said this year
he was only looking.
He said he had gone without pay for
three months and "will not buy sheep this year".

Plans With 'Broader Vision' Lodged For
New Mosque At Southfield RoadSo Worshippers Don't Have To Pray In Car Park
27 JUN 2023
Plans have been lodged with the council
for a new mosque after it was revealed worshippers were praying in the car
park.
Earlier this year, Central Masjid
chairman Gohar Ihsan said they had outgrown the current site on Southfield Road
and people were praying outside, even in the winter months. Now, proposals have
been submitted to Middlesbrough Council detailing a new scheme.
If the plans are given the go-ahead, a
new five-storey building with a mosque, community centre, and a cafe will be
built. It will also include an outdoor roof terrace, three student flats and a
21-space basement car park.
The mosque is embedded within the local
community and has a food bank that opens every Wednesday between 10am and 11am.
Mr Ihsan said 99.9% of the users of the food bank were not Muslims. He believes
it is part of the mosque’s role to welcome and accommodate everyone in the
community.
Previously, Mr Ihsan said: “The mosque
that we are building is not just a mosque, the whole point of the development
is there is a broader vision for a community hub. There is nothing like this in
the whole area and the North East.
“It will be the most productive mosque
in terms of delivery and interaction in the whole of the country. It’s a big
claim to make, and it's bold, but we are confident we will be able to deliver
on that. We’ve got a great team and a great vision.
“You outgrow spaces sometimes.
Currently, we have people praying outside in the rain sometimes on Fridays and
it’s freezing cold, especially in the winter. In the summer there are more
people, and the car park is absolutely ram packed.”
As part of the project, the current
mosque will be knocked down.

Bolton’s biggest mosque will host Eid
prayers on two days
A Bolton mosque will host Eid prayers on
two different days.
The mosque was looking to cater for
those following different moon sighting criteria.
This year, those following the sighting
of the moon in Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid on Wednesday whilst others will
celebrate on Thursday.
In Bolton and surrounding towns around
60 per cent of mosques already celebrate Eid according to local and Morocco
moon sighting, whilst the remainder celebrate according to the Saudi Arabian
moon sighting criteria.
The almost yearly disagreements and
controversies have led to neighbours and families celebrating Eid and beginning
Ramadan on different days.
Following moon sighting meetings and
conferences at the mosque, the Zakariyya Jaam’e Masjid on Deane Road has
announced it has decided to set aside Eid prayers catering for people who wish
to follow local moonsighting criteria as well as Saudi Arabia.
The mosque is said to be first in the
area to be allocating different Eid prayer days, something it did in April at
the end of Ramadan.
On Wednesday (June 28) Eid Salah
(prayers) at the mosque will take place at 5am, 6am and 10am. On Thursday Eid
prayers will take place at 10am (Bayyan-sermon at 9.30am) for those following
local moonsighting and Morocco.
Eid-Ul-Adha, known as the festival of
sacrifice is held at the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi
Arabia.
In Blackburn prominent Muftis and
scholars launched a campaign this year to educate the wider Muslim community on
'why local moonsighting mattered’.
They also said they wanted to ‘unite the
Muslims of the UK’ by encouraging people to follow localised moonsighting
criteria instead of Saudi Arabia following doubts over the announcement of Eid
and the beginning of Ramadan.
It had led to the Imams hosting Eid
prayers in a community hall on a seprate day from the mosques they are normally
aligned too.

USCIRF Ex-Commissioner, Spiritual
Advisor To Donal Trump, Takes On Obama For Criticising Modi Government On
Rights Of Muslims
Jun 27, 2023
NEW DELHI: The US Commission on
International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has often raised New Delhi's hackles
by faulting it for interfering with the rights of minorities. But many here
were surprised on Monday when one of its former commissioners, Johnnie Moore,
took on former US president Barack Obama for saying that the Modi government
had failed to protect the rights of Muslims.
"I think the former president
(Obama) should spend his energy complimenting India, more than criticising
India. India is the most diverse country in human history. It's not a perfect
country, just like the United States, but its diversity is its strength, and we
should be complimenting the largest democracy in the world every chance that we
can, that we have," Moore said.
Talking to ANI, Moore, an evangelical
leader who served as spiritual advisor to previous US president Donald Trump,
said, "And so I think, you know, it was the time to celebrate a historic
visit, you know, rather than levelling some criticism on it, you know, with
your friends, particularly when it comes to democracy. With your friends, it's
sometimes better to privately criticise and to publicly, publicly praise.
That's good geopolitics. "I disagree with the sentiment of the former
president (Obama). Even in that critique, Obama couldn't help but also
compliment Prime Minister Modi, and I certainly understand why, having spent
some time with him."
The USCIRF is a US federal government
commission which makes policy recommendations to the US government and was
created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. USCIRF
commissioners are appointed by the president and the leadership of both
political parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
It has been critical of India,
particularly after 2014 when BJP took office, for alleged violations of
religious freedoms, drawing protests from the Indian government. Sangh Parivar
outfits view the bipartisan US body as a vehicle of Christian evangelical
groups engaged in proselytisation in India and other developing countries - the
history possibly being the reason why the government and the ruling party
ignored Moore's views even though finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had on
Sunday lashed out at Obama for his criticism of the Modi government. Moore was
sanctioned by China for his work in 2021.

How Obama's Muslim Childhood Became a
Taboo Topic
June 23, 2023
Americans have an abiding fascination
with their presidents, especially with their foibles and secrets. Who lied? Who
ordered illegal operations? Who had mistresses?
Thus was the country transfixed by Bill
Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, and the tawdry drip-drip of their liaison. When newly
declassified documents revealed hitherto unknown CIA connections to Lee Harvey
Oswald, this made a media splash, with Tucker Carlson asking: "Did the CIA
have a hand in the murder of John F. Kennedy?"
But that fascination dies when it comes
to Barack Obama, the Left's quasi-sacred figure. About him, no curiosity,
please, no gossip, and no hint of impropriety. When he falsely claimed in 1991
to have been born in Kenya, and not in Hawaii, blame fell on a sloppy literary
agent. When Stanley Kurtz proved that Obama lied about not being a member of
Chicago's socialist New Party and a candidate for it, the Obama P.R. machine
smeared Kurtz and the story disappeared.
When clear evidence showed that Obama
had lied about having been born and raised a Muslim, the researcher who made
the case was reviled, his investigation scorned, and his argument vaporized.
I should know, as I was that researcher.
I wrote five times on this topic in 2007-08, during Obama's first presidential campaign
(three of those times in FrontPageMag.com) and then aggregated all this
information, plus new details, in a long and (so far) definitive September 2012
article, "Obama's Muslim Childhood," serialized in the Washington
Times.
All those writings emphasized that Obama
was now a Christian. The first one began with:
"If I were a Muslim I would let you
know," Barack Obama has said, and I believe him. In fact, he is a
practicing Christian, a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ. He is
not now a Muslim. But was he ever a Muslim or seen by others as a Muslim?
I answered in the affirmative and showed
how contradictory evidence concerning Obama's religious background – from
Obama's father and name, from years in Indonesia, from his family, and most of
all from himself – conclusively points to his being born and raised a Muslim.
Throughout, I emphasized not the Islam
issue but the character issue; if Obama lies about something so fundamental,
how can he be trusted? His other lies, such as Kenyan birth and socialist party
non-membership, confirm this problem.
Responses came fast and hard. Ben
Rhodes' "echo chamber" nearly fainted at the impudence of my
lèsemajesté. Like Kurtz, I was slandered without the facts I presented ever
addressed. Here's a small sampling of the deluge:
Ben Smith in Politico derided my
analysis as "the template for a faux-legitimate assault on Obama's
religion."
The Spectator called mine the "the
worst article on the presidential election" and also deemed it
"mad" and "despicable."
Martin Peretz in the New Republic said I
had "simply gone bonkers ... and malicious."
Vice ran an article "Would You Care
If Obama Were Muslim?" that responded to my carefully-crafted argument
with "BLARGHA BLARGHA BLARGH REPEAL OBAMA BIN HUSSEIN'S GOVERNMENT
TAKEOVER OF OUR JOBS."
The Atlantic published no less than
three attacks on the article and me. Mark Ambinder rued "the false notion
that Obama is or was ever Muslim." Andrew Sullivan dismissed my work as
"toxins." Matthew Yglesias ridiculed my saying that I believe Obama
is not now a Muslim with "I, for one, believe Daniel Pipes when he says
he's not a child molester."
And so it went, howling with outrage at
the very thought of Obama as a Muslim, mocking and taunting me with ad hominem
attacks, speculating about my motives. So relentless was the onslaught, even
the conservative press overwhelmingly shied away from the topic. The McCain and
Romney campaigns both treated the topic like Kryptonite. The issue of Obama's
lies had no impact on either presidential campaign, both of which – of course –
Obama won.
I expect that, at some future time when
Barack Obama loses his sacral quality, historians will take great interest in
his childhood religious affiliation. They will wonder how, in the
information-heavy, politically-riven, and celebrity-mad culture of early
twenty-first century United States, so gigantic a biographical inconvenience
could be successfully hidden and rendered taboo. They will study how, in a
modern democratic society, a determined candidate can suppress even the most
important and relevant information.
I look forward to the vindication.

Hashmi, Delic and Sherazi: Muslim
families concerned about Pride activities in Ottawa schools deserve a voice
Jun 26, 2023
A few days before the start of June, our
inboxes started filling up with messages from parents in our communities who
were concerned about what their children would be taught during Pride month.
They had contacted their children’s schools but were told there was a no
opt-out policy in effect because participating in Pride month activities was a
human rights issue.
Article content
The federal government describes human
rights as “how we instinctively expect to be treated as persons. They define
what we are all entitled to — a life of equality, dignity and respect, to live
free from discrimination and harassment.”
When some Muslims felt their parental
rights taken from them and their dignity dwindling, many decided to keep their
children home on the first day of June.
When the influx of messages became so
great, we created an online form to allow parents to share their concerns.
The results were disheartening. Of just
under 500 responses, almost 30 per cent reported that their child had either
been targeted for being a Muslim, had been taught age-inappropriate material or
had their religious rights infringed upon. Another 22 per cent said they
weren’t sure.
Parents shared stories about children
being berated for being absent, being told they were ungrateful for having
Ramadan recognized in school and being forced to attend Pride month activities.
From a child being penalized with no recess for not wanting to colour in a
rainbow in grade 3, to another child in junior kindergarten being asked whether
she would like to be male or female, the anecdotal evidence piled up. Others
reported that teachers debated religious beliefs with students to the point
where the students felt targeted.
Multiple parents reported that a teacher
at a Kanata school distributed a booklet to students in her Grade 5/6 class
that specifically targeted Muslim students in her class, promoting the very practices
and beliefs that most Muslim families find objectionable.
Article content
In one alarming incident, staff stood at
the doors during an assembly to ensure no one left and even searched the
parking lot for students. The irony that this took place during National
Indigenous History Month should not be lost on us.
While the Ottawa-Carleton District
School Board has committed to — and indeed has made great strides in —
fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all students, these experiences
suggest there is much more to be done.
Concerns raised by parents about Pride
don’t have to do with LGBTQ+ individuals. Not one parent suggested that Pride
should not be celebrated. They simply had reservations about their own
children’s participation in the celebrations.
Cross-dressing and changing one’s birth
gender are forbidden under mainstream Islamic teachings, as they are in some
other religions, except in rare cases where there is physiological evidence to
justify such a change. Active participation in activities and celebrations,
whether it be a celebration of same-sex relationships, pre-marital
relationships, or those involving alcohol, are largely understood to be
prohibited by many Muslims.
Article content
For many parents, having their children
stay home was a civil way of registering their helplessness in the face of a
system that did not want to listen.
Stomping on Pride flags and other such
actions are explicitly prohibited in Islamic teachings and we were quick to
denounce such hurtful acts in protests. However, we are deeply concerned that
our youth and some parents are being contacted by extreme right-wing groups
interested in having our community be the so-called champions of this cause.
People who are unheard and who feel frustrated are vulnerable to the
whisperings of extremists.
We sincerely hope lessons can be learned
from what has occurred to prevent it from happening again. For our part, we are
committed to continuing our denunciations of hate and bullying against LGBTQ+
people, speaking out against dehumanization, and condemning disrespectful acts.
Principled disagreements must not lead to hate, bigotry or disrespect.
Article content
he school board will need to calm fears,
through the development of clear procedures for staff on how to navigate cases
of gender dysphoria and nonconformity with age-appropriate care and
professionalism. Parents need to be a part of those discussions, not an
afterthought.
Recognizing that gender identity and
sexual orientation are deeply personal matters, and that people choose to
approach them in different ways, can help all students feel included without
any judgments on personal choices or beliefs as well as help rebuild lost
trust.
Raising awareness about the struggles
people face, and sharing their lived experiences and histories, is an important
part of fighting hate and intolerance. Both LGBTQ+ communities and Muslim
communities face discrimination and hatred. But history has shown that when
ideas are forced upon people, the effort often backfires and causes more
damage. If our government is serious about human rights meaning living a life
free of discrimination, Muslim parents and students need to stop being treated
as haters.
Article content
As National Indigenous History Month
comes to a closing, we would do well to remember the tremendous harm caused by
teachers with colonial mindsets, demeaning the traditional and ancestral
beliefs of children while isolating them from their parents. It would be wise
for our public school system to not repeat similar mistakes.

Kelantan MB’s aide defends fine against
non-Muslim woman for ‘indecent’ attire
By Muhammad Yusry
Tuesday, 27 Jun 2023
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — A special
officer to the Kelantan menteribesar has defended the Kota Baru Municipal
Council (MPKB) for fining a non-Muslim Kelantanese woman over allegedly
indecent clothing.
Free Malaysia Today reported Lau Chin
Chua as claiming that photographs of the woman circulating online did not show
her in the clothing she wore when she was fined.
“She was wearing pants so short that
people thought she wasn’t wearing any, only a T-shirt. She then changed into a
different pair of shorts and posted a picture of the (subsequent) outfit,” he
was quoted as saying.
Lau accused the 35-year-old woman of
trying to trick the public by changing her attire, but said the local council
had already taken her picture beforehand.
Yesterday, New Straits Times reported
that the council’s enforcement officers issued the fine to the woman who
operates a clothing business, during an inspection at the outlet.
MPKB’s president Rosnazli Amin
reportedly said the woman had violated provisions of the Business and
Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019.

Compound fine issued by Kelantan local
council to non-Muslim woman is unlawful, says Bersatu leader
June 26, 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: The compound fine issued
by the Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) to a non-muslim Kelantanese woman for
wearing indecent clothing should be considered void as it is unlawful.
Bersatu Legal and Constitution Bureau
deputy chairman Sasha Lyna Latif said the council had no power to regulate
clothing or morality.
She said Section 34(2)(b) of the
council's by-laws exceeds the powers given to the council under Section 102 of
the Local Government Act 1976 to make by-laws.
"Section 102 only permits the council
to make by-laws for 'health, safety and well-being'. No power is granted to
regulate clothing or morality.
"Whereas the clothing of Muslims
can be regulated by Syariah enactments, the local authority cannot do so.
Hence, the summons issued to the non-Muslim woman business owner is void and
unlawful," she said in a statement.
The 35-year-old woman who runs a
clothing business was issued the compound fine for wearing shorts in a public
place.
MPKB president Rosnazli Amin said the
woman was found to have committed an offence under Section 34(2)(b) of the
council's Business and Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019.
Sasha said the best course of action for
MPKB is to retract the compound and suspend Section 34(2)(b) pending review by
the state authorities or exco.
She added that the issuance of the
compound fine does not appear to be defensible as the clarity of the offence
remains a blur.
"The standard imposed upon Muslim
women which is to cover the 'aurat' cannot be imposed upon non-Muslims.
"The word 'sopan' (decent) in
Section 34(2)(b) is vague and open to manifold interpretation. It is unfair to
subject the woman to a fine when the definition of the offence is
unclear."
Sasha said the compound issued can be
perceived to be unjust as it appears to be targeting women exclusively.
"In any event, whether her clothes
were indecent or not is a subjective matter. To establish that the clothes were
'indecent' would surely require some degree of indecency which is more than
just being clad in a t-shirt and shorts, an example being partial nudity.
"It is hence unnecessary and is
liable to create mistrust among our fellow Malaysians of all races and
religions," she said.

‘Enemies of Allah’ remark not aimed at
PAS’s rivals, says preacher
June 27, 2023
PETALING JAYA: Preacher Syeikh Zainul
AsriRomli says he did not liken PAS’ rivals to “enemies of Allah” in a speech
during the “Himpunan Kedah Berselawat” event last Saturday.
In response to police reports being
lodged against him, Zainul said his remark was not directed at a particular
political party or group and that it had been misinterpreted.
“I was not directing the speech at any
group, and I did not mention any political parties or anyone for that matter,”
he said in a video posted on Facebook today.
He said what he meant by “enemies of
Allah” were the Jews and “Nasrani”, adding that this was based on the Quran.
“Nasrani” is an Arabic form of the word
“Nazarene”, which originally referred to a sect of Christianity.
Zainul said he was sorry if his speech
had offended some Malaysians, adding that he hoped his explanation would
clarify the matter.
Yesterday, a representative from
PakatanHarapan’s media centre filed a police report against the preacher over
his remark, claiming that it was seditious.
Muhammad Yahaya claimed that Zainul, in
his speech, said he hoped “Allah would defend Kedah from being conquered by His
enemies” and that Islam would emerge victorious.
Amanah Youth chief HasbieMuda also said
Zainul’s statement may “further radicalise PAS’ supporters” and play up the
state polls as a battlefield for Muslims against non-Muslims.
Hasbie said this was the second report
filed against Zainul, following one lodged in Kedah.
Zainul is an independent preacher and
was formerly deputy chief of the Kedah PAS ulama council.
He courted controversy in February when
he claimed that a mosque in Penang had been turned into a temple.

Perlis Muslims encouraged to hold Eid ul
Azha prayers in open space
27-06- 2023
KANGAR:– Like the previous Aidiladaha
celebrations, Perlis encourages the Aidiladaha prayers on June 29 to be held in
open ground at 8 am.
The Regent of Perlis, Tuanku Syed
Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail said the selection of open ground will be by the
respective mosque committee and the matter is in line with the Sunnah of the
Prophet.
“However, the parish committee can
consider using the open space in the mosque if there is a need depending the
bplace and number of pilgrims present,“ he said a statement issued by the
Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) today.
He said in unsuitable weather
conditions, the Eid ul Azha Prayers can be performed in the interior of the
respective parish mosques at 8.15 am and announcements related to changes in
location must be notified by the Mosque Parish Committee at 7.45 am.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin who is also the
MAIPs chairman said that as a safety measure, pilgrims are encouraged to wear
face masks and bring their own mats.
Meanwhile regarding the organisation of
sacrificial ceremony, he said it can be allowed and must comply with the safety
and health standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the authorities.
“The slaughtering of sacrificial animals
can only be done in government-owned or private slaughterhouses, registered
mosques or suraus and private premises that have been approved by the Perlis
Veterinary Services Department (JPV),“ he said. –Bernama

First-ever music policy prepared to
address copyright, piracy issues
June 27, 2023
ISLAMABAD: The first-ever music policy
to address piracy, copyrights and other issues has been prepared, according to
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb.
In an announcement on Monday, she said
the draft has been finalised and termed it “big news for the industry”.
The draft policy is likely to be
presented before the federal cabinet after Eidul Azha for approval. After the
cabinet’s nod, the ministry will implement the policy.
The new policy outlines incentives and
initiatives to boost the music industry and address the stakeholders’ concerns
about ineffective copyright laws in Pakistan.
Since the 1970s, no policy parameters,
including legislative and administrative, for the music industry have been
introduced, the minister regretted.
She conceded that Pakistan and its music
industry suffered due to intellectual property theft, but said the new policy
will fully protect the rights of composers and musicians.
The policy draft has been prepared in
accordance with international standards. With this policy, the protection of
the rights of artists’ public performance, production, distribution,
adaptation, duration, and mechanical and communication rights have been brought
into a legal framework.
Through such measures, the problem of
users and licensees would be solved, Ms Aurangzeb said.
“Music could be termed the soul and
spirit of the Pakistani society, rather it was a national and cultural
identity, being brought forward from generation to generation.”
The policy would effectively end the
monopolisation of the industry and protest the basic legal rights of the
artists.
“All issues and demands of the music
stakeholders, including copyrights, would be resolved.”
The policy would provide legal cover to
the rights of music producers, singers, writers and lyricists, besides
resolving the long-standing issues of the industry related to sales and piracy.
It will have special measures to
preserve classical music and initiatives to promote local and folk music and
regional singers.Under the policy, steps would be taken to not only preserve
but also promote Pakistan’s musical heritage, which was rich being a unique
combination of Sufi poetry, with classic and modern music, the minister added.
For a long time, showbiz artists and musicians
have urged the government to implement intellectual property rights and ensure
they are paid royalties for their art.
Royalties are payments made to artists
when a project that they have worked on gets a re-run or is reused in any way.
A step to address this issue was taken
earlier this year when PTI Senator Faisal Javed announced a royalties bill for
the country’s artists has been tabled in the Senate.
He added that artists have been facing
the issue of “rightful and just royalties for a long time due to redundant and
outdated provisions of relevant laws.”
He said that the amendment in the
Copyright Ordinance 1962 aims at empowering the copyright board to fix the
royalties for licensing and assignment work.

Judge explains why he recused from SC
bench
June 27, 2023
ISLAMABAD: Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah
on Monday recused himself from a seven-member SC bench hearing the challenge to
military trial of civilians “only to safeguard public trust in the integrity
and impartiality” of courts.
Justice Shah, in his note, said
petitioner Jawwad S. Khawaja was his relative, but added the latter had filed
the petition in public interest, not involving any interest of his own.
Yet he acceded to the government’s
request and withdrew from the bench only because the common man might not fully
understand the difference between petitions filed in ‘public interest’ and
‘personal interest’, he explained.
At the same time, he underlined that
judges should not readily accede to the request for their recusal from hearing
a case and decide the matter after properly weighing the ground agitated for
making such request. Where it was apparent that the perception of impartiality
was being created for some ulterior motive without any sound basis, the judge
must not yield to such strategy and abdicate performance of his duty, Justice
Shah wrote.
He said if such a request was based on
some reasonable ground that may genuinely raise doubt in the mind of a common
person about the impartiality of the judge, the safest course for the judge was
to accept such request in the larger interest of upholding public trust in the
integrity and impartiality of the court.
While the petitioner was his relative,
Justice Shah noted that Article IV of the code of conduct for superior court
judges was not applicable in the case as the petition was moved in public
interest, and not personal interest, and a verdict either way would not affect
him personally.
According to Article IV, a judge must
decline resolutely to act in a case involving his own interest, including those
persons whom he regards and treats as near relatives or close friend.
‘Never met Imran’
On the other hand, petitioner and former
chief justice of Pakistan Jawwad S. Khawaja brushed aside any speculations that
his challenge to military trial of civilians was aimed at supporting PTI
chairman Imran Khan.
In a two-page statement issued in Urdu
through Barrister Umar Gillani on Monday, the ex-CJP said he still believed the
trial of civilians in military courts was ‘illegal’ and ‘unconstitutional’ as
it impinges upon fundamental rights.
Therefore, he said, those creating an
impression as if his point of view on civilians’ trial in military courts was
something new or based on personal or family exigencies either did not know
history or were deliberately spreading false accusations.
Ex-CJP Khawaja said Mr Khan was known to
him for past 60 years, though he had never met him during the last 50 years,
except for once at a wedding ceremony some 15 years ago.
“Likewise my relationship with Hamid
Khan, the lawyer of Imran Khan, spans over a period of 46 years since he is the
most credible jurist and therefore commands complete respect,” the statement
said, adding they had never discussed anything about the case or the present
petition.
Elaborating on reasons for issuing the
statement, Justice Khawaja said one of his journalist friends had texted him
about the speculations with regard to his filing of the petition before the
Supreme Court.
He said the media friend also suggested
him to clarify his position in this regard.
The ex-CJP said he had a fair idea how
much “frightened” the media was or how much they had compromised on their
independence.
“Despite having this opinion, I still
believe that being a nation we are standing at the crossroads of history,” he
said, making it clear that his opinion about civilians’ trial in military
courts was not formed after the May 9 incidents.
He said he had filed the petition for
the benefit of the people at large and it was different from the one filed by
Hamid Khan on behalf of the PTI chairman.

National Savings floats Islamic products
June 27, 2023
ISLAMABAD: The government on Monday
launched four National Savings products in the Sharia-compliant mode with
effect from July 1 at rates of returns being offered in percentages comparable
with conventional banking rates.
The National Savings Organisation (NSO),
a subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance, will formally launch the new products
for the general public from July 1, said Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, while
talking about the Sarwa Islamic Savings Products that include Sarwa Islamic
Term Accounts (SITA) for one, three and five years and a running saving
account.
The one-year SITA would be available to
investors at a rate of return of 20.80pc, followed by 18pc for three years and
12.84pc for five years. The Sarwa Islamic Saving Account (SISA), a running
account, would offer 19.50pc return. The products will be scriptless and their
profits would be deposited in their bank accounts or National Savings Accounts
through Raast accounts, as the case maybe.
The National Savings would soon launch
NSS mobile application to enable account holders to remain updated about their
accounts, besides allowing these products to be operated through debit cards
and automated teller machines.
The finance minister recalled that the
steps taken by the government during his previous 2013-2017 stint in office had
expanded the Islamic banking system to 21pc of the total banking operations in
the country.
While a Sharia-compliant bank was set
up, two commercial banks have now converted to Islamic banking operations given
the potential and strong leaning of the population towards interest-free
financial system, he said.
He said that soon after taking over as
finance minister last year, he was able with the government support to withdraw
appeals filed by the State Bank of Pakistan and National Bank of Pakistan
against the judgement of the Federal Shariat Court that ordered an end to
interest-based financing and conversion of conventional system to
Sharia-compliant financial system within five years.
He said the government had last year
constituted a high-level steering committee of financial experts and Islamic
scholars, which was led by the governor of SBP and supervised by himself (Mr
Dar) with a mandate to ensure smooth transition to Sharia-compliant economy.
He said it was not possible to make
overnight shift to such a large network that would take some time to transform,
but at least “we would not be in war with the Almighty by continuing with
interest-based financial system”.
The minister said he had promised in his
budget speech to launch Islamic saving schemes by July 1 and the government was
able to meet the first promise made in the budget while others budgetary
commitments would be fulfilled in due course as required. He said it was for
the first time that National Savings was introducing Islamic products.

GB govt joins hands with Allah Walay
Trust to improve access to clean drinking water
JUNE 27, 2023
The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan here
on Sunday announced its partnership with Allah Walay Trust, a renowned
charitable organization, to address the critical issue of clean drinking water
in the region. Recognizing the urgent need to provide safe and accessible
drinking water to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, this collaboration aims to
ensure the well-being and health of the local population.
According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), access to safely managed drinking water remains a
significant challenge in Pakistan, with only 36 percent of the population
having access to clean water. This number is expected to worsen due to factors
such as rapid population growth, urbanization, and the impacts of climate
change. As a proactive response, the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan reached out
to Allah Walay Trust to implement a comprehensive clean water program.
Under this program, Allah Walay Trust
will adopt and manage 35 water filtration plants in Gilgit city. These plants
will play a crucial role in providing clean and healthy drinking water to the
local population. The partnership will encompass the operations and maintenance
of these filtration plants, ensuring the continuous supply of safe water for
the residents.
Allah Walay Trust has a proven track
record of success, having already adopted 41 water filtration plants in
Islamabad. These plants have successfully provided clean drinking water to 60%
of the population in Islamabad, as well as to 100 surrounding villages. The
Trust’s expertise and experience in water filtration technology make them a valuable
partner in this joint endeavor to enhance the quality of life for the people of
Gilgit-Baltistan.
“The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan
commends the efforts of Allah Walay Trust in their dedication to improving
water access and their commitment to the well-being of communities across
Pakistan, according to a press release from information department GB. Press
release added that by joining hands with this esteemed organization, the
government aims to make significant strides in achieving the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring clean water and
sanitation for all.
“This partnership reflects the
government’s firm commitment to prioritize the welfare of its citizens’ said
Chief Secretary GB while talking to media in Gilgit. He said it serves as a
testament to the government’s dedication to finding innovative solutions and
engaging with reputable organizations to address the pressing challenges faced
by the region.
The CS GB said, “The Government of
Gilgit-Baltistan extends its gratitude to Allah Walay Trust for their

President, ministers fully benefit from
‘special’ Haj flight
June 27, 2023
ISLAMABAD: A number of government
ministers and state functionaries alongside staff members arrived in Saudi
Arabia to perform Haj onboard a special PIA flight meant for lawmakers who had
to miss their last Haj flight on account of the federal budget, which was
passed on Sunday.
In addition to President Arif Alvi and
his family and staff members, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, State
Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Murtaza Abbasi, and
caretaker Punjab chief minister Mohsin Naqvi were among 52 pilgrims. Ninety
people on the plane were regular passengers.
This is the same flight that Finance
Minister Ishaq Dar had referred to during a session of the National Assembly,
saying it was meant to facilitate his ‘fellow parliamentarians’.
On Sunday, Mr Dar clarified that the
lawmakers were footing the bill themselves. The travel arrangements were made
after Saudi authorities accepted a request from Islamabad to allow a special
PIA flight for the parliamentarians who took part in the budget debate, he had
said.
But it turned out not only the
lawmakers, but the president, his wife, and his staff members were also
onboard.
As Saudi authorities were reportedly not
intimated of Mr Alvi’s arrival, airport officials did not allow passengers to
disembark for about 15 minutes, one of the passengers onboard the flight told
Dawn.
The authorities questioned why the
“Pak-1 call sign” of the president’s special flight had not been given to the
authorities ahead of his arrival.
The passenger said after 15 minutes, a
convoy of black Mercedes vehicles reached the landing strip to give protocol to
President Alvi.
Meanwhile, other passengers remained on
the plane and were later taken to the airport lounge like ordinary passengers.
Press Secretary to President Akhtar
Munir told Dawn that the president his six family members and four of his staff
members went for Haj at the president’s expense and no state money was spent
for this purpose.

Northern Group Urges Muslims to Forgive
Shettima over ‘Anti-Islamic’ Comment
June 27, 2023
The North-East Progressive Coalition
(NEPC) has pleaded with Muslims across Nigeria to forgive vice president
KashimShettima over his “anti-Islamic” comment in the build up to the National
Assembly leadership elections.
Politics Nigeria recalls that Shettima
had advised lawmakers, particularly in the Senate, to elect an incompetent
Southern Christian over the most qualified Norther Muslim in the race.
“Under the current dispensation, the
most incompetent southern Christian is better than the most puritanical northern
Muslim for the presidency of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,“
Shettima declared.
The vice president’s comment has
continued to generate mixed reactions despite his apology.
But in a statement on Monday, the NEPC,
Muhammed KontoMafa, urged Muslims in the country to accept Shettima’s apology
as mere human error.
“Nigerians and indeed the North,
particularly, should understand that the Vice President is a man of great
honour and will not do anything against the people. As we are all humans, we
should consider the better side of the Vice President. To err is human; to
forgive is divine,” Mafa pleaded.

Eid-el-Kabir, About Sacrificial Giving,
Love – Oyo PDP Felicitates Muslims
Jun 27, 2023
Oyo state chapter of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) felicitates Muslim faithful across the state on the
occasion of 2023 Eid-el Kabir.
While urging Muslims to reflect on the
significance of the annual Islamic celebration, the ruling party in the state
stressed the importance of sacrifice, love, and faith in human relation and
nation building.
The Oyo state chairman of PDP,
Honourable DayoOgungbenro made this disclosure in a press statement made
available to journalists today by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Akeem
Olatunji.
The party equally felicitates the Deputy
Governor, Barrister Adebayo AbdulroheemLawal who is currently observing holy
pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and all Muslim leaders in Oyo state
The ruling PDP noted that even the
relationship between God and man is clearly defined adding that both have
expectations towards each other in order to continue to sustain the
relationship while urging Muslims to continue to trust the SeyiMakinde led PDP
government enough to continue to support it.
“Eid-el-Kabir is one of the two
important festivals in Islam. It is an occasion where Muslims celebrate the
willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Ismail, in total
submission to will and command of Allah.
“However, his faith was only being
tested by God and when it was discovered that he was willing to exhibit such
level of obedience, God gave Prophet Ibrahim a ram to use as sacrifice instead
of his son.
“So, in essence, the celebration of
Eid-el-Kabir avails Muslims the opportunity to imitate the sacrificial giving
as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim.
“We therefore, urge our brothers and sisters
in Islam to endeavor to extend the hand of love to one another inclusive or non
Muslims alike in showing kindness and compassion through giving.
“Do not hoard meat or food, ensure you
give to others in faith and the Almighty Allah that has provided for you to
celebrate will provide even more by simply showing obedience to the teachings
of Islam.” The party said.
The party also called for more prayers
for the success of Omititun 2.0 tagged Sustainable Development Agenda under the
leadership of Governor SeyiMakinde, assuring that the people of the state are
in for another term of remarkable sector by sector achievements.

Muslim faithful groan as subsidy removal
squeezes family budgets
27 June 2023
With the recent petroleum subsidy
removal, which has triggered a fresh spike in food prices, millions of Nigerian
Muslims have expressed displeasure at rising deprivation, which they said,
could ruin Id el Kabir for millions of faithful.
They complain that while economic
hardship has reduced their earnings, the falling purchasing power due to
escalating prices has made a mess of their budgets, with many resorting to
borrowing or begging to take care of their responsibilities.
The celebration is becoming elusive for
many faithful as they grapple with rising inflation and low purchasing power,
which have deprived them of basic needs.
AfolabiOlaniyan, a young man who works
with a microfinance bank turned up at Gbagada livestock market, Lagos, with
N150,000. He left the market with a complaint rather than a ram. He told The
Guardian that he had visited more than four livestock markets and could not
find any price close to his budget.
As of yesterday, the price of a
moderate-sized ram is N250,000 while a cow ranges from N300,000 to N1.3
million, depending on the size.
As of May, the food segment of the
consumer price index (CPI) was 24.6 per cent. But some food items have
increased much over 50 per cent in the past year, according to findings by The
Guardian. The recent fuel subsidy removal, which has increased the cost of
commuting by over 100 per cent in some cities, has worsened the price crisis.
At the abattoir in Bariga market,
butchers lamented low consumer patronage. Idris Musiliu linked the challenge to
harsh economic conditions and poor purchasing power of the consumers, noting
that sales were a lot better last year.
Musiliu also noted that most people
already got the things they needed for the celebration way earlier in the
month, in anticipation of a possible increase in prices.
“Last year, even people who were
travelling came to buy meat. The market was filled up. But this time, it is
different,” he said.
A ram seller at Olorunfemi Cow Market,
LASU road Egan, AkinolaOlorunfemi, attributed the increase in the cost of the
cows and rams to the high cost of transportation occasioned by the recent
removal of subsidy on PMS.
“Subsidy removal affected the prices of
a cow because formerly, a trailer is 800, 000 and the highest then was
N1.2million but now it’s N1.8m and N2 million, so we will need to deduct those
prices from the livestock; this led to the increase in ram prices,” he said.
Another seller, Olayinka Ibrahim, at
Iyana-Iba Cow Market said the tripled increase in prices of the cow feeds
coupled with a high cost of transporting the cows led to an increase in the
prices of the animals.
At Idimu, Alimosho area, sellers blamed
subsidy removal for the price increase, saying the cost of livestock feed has
increased.
A ram seller, Ahmed, said the increase
in the cost of rams and cows is high as compared to last year. He put the
year-on-year change in price at about 50 per cent.
“Last year, a ram sold at N200,000 in
the village. It is now N300,000. You must feed the ram apart from the high cost
of transportation. A sack of animal feed is N8,000, even in rural areas. It was
sold at half the price last year. All these costs must be factored into the
selling price,” he said.
Prices of foodstuffs are also becoming
outrageous. A medium-sized basket of tomatoes costs N28,000 as against N10,000
it sold at the beginning of the year while a derica of tin tomatoes, has
increased from N700 to N800.
For a crate of medium size eggs, the
price has risen to between N1,900 and N2,000 this time last year to an average
of N2,400 while a carton of noodles, which was sold between N2,800 and N2,900,
is N3,500.
Abibat Bello lamented that patronage has
also dropped following the increase in the prices of food.
Speaking on her preparation for the
celebration, she said: “I am not preparing for any celebration. Where is the
money? Last week I sent someone to the market to help confirm the price of
pepper for a small basket and she told me it was N20,000. Today the person told
me it is N30,000. This means I won’t cook anything for the celebration. I will
only serve drinks to visitors,” she said.
Another foodstuff seller, Mary Adeyemi,
said a 50kg bag of rice which was sold for N28,000 before the subsidy removal
is now 35,000 and is expected to still increase.
Prices have also changed remarkably
following the subsidy removal. Mrs. Adeyemi said a bag of yellow garri, which
was sold for N18,000 now costs N21,000
Akinyemi said a kilo of frozen chicken
has increased from N2,200 to N2,400, adding that a kilo of Turkey which was
N3,400 now sells at N3,800.
For frozen fish, a kilo of Titus, which
was N2, 200 has increased to N2,400 while Kote rose from N1,500 to N1,800.
She said a paint bucket of sugar, which
was sold between N2,800 and N3,000 is now sold for N4,000.
Adeyemi said sales have dropped due to
low patronage, adding that customers complain about the high prices of
foodstuff.
The founder of a catering service, Meals
by Peace Catering Services, Peace Adewole, said there is about a 50 per cent
increase in some food items in the past month, a situation that has affected
the survival of households.
She said a 3.5 litres bowl of stew which
was between N7,000 and N8,000 is currently going for between N16,000 to
N17,000, adding that the increase is due to the rise in the price of a bowl of
pepper which was sold N6,000 and now presently N20,000.
Adewole said Salah is not the only cause
for the increase in the price of foodstuff, adding that the subsidy removal is
a major cause.
She said the masses are bearing the
brunt of the impact, adding that some of the food items are scarce such as
tomatoes and pepper.
She said those food items available are
sold for an exorbitant price.
Adewole said a 3.5 litre bowl of egusi
soup which was sold for around N9,000 to N10, 000 is now sold for N20,000,
while that of Ogbono which was sold for N8,000 is now N20,000.
She said Ogbono is now the new gold,
while stockfish and crayfish and other items are expensive.
Adewole said patronage is on a decline,
explaining that only customers whose companies increased their salaries
continue to patronise her, while those who have not experienced an increase in
salary are finding it difficult to buy.
She said customers who have wedding
celebrations are now cutting down on their budget, while companies who train
their staff are cutting down on logistics for feeding.
Adewole said two companies that paid for
her catering service earlier in the year for their staff training later this
year, have now postponed their events because of the increase in the initial
budget.
In response to the hike, some buyers
have expressed their anger and frustration, stating that the removal of fuel
subsidies by the government has affected every aspect of life, including the
cost of living, transportation, and now religious obligations.
According to them, the biting effect of
economic realities has also complicated their decision on whether or not they
would be able to afford rams or cattle for the sacrifice. This, they said, is
because they have to weigh their decision against other pressing issues
demanding equal attention.
A buyer, Bola Ajibola, told The Guardian
that the rising cost of rams and cows is putting undue financial strain on many
families.
“It’s important for us to remember the
true meaning of the festive season and to ensure that everyone can participate
without being burdened by these costs,” she said.
Speaking with a resident at Egan,
AderonkeAdenekan, told The Guardian that the removal of fuel subsidy has had a
significant impact on the cost of living, and this has now extended to
religious obligations, with the increase in the cost of animals required for
sacrifices during the festival
“The prices of cow are too high and not
encouraging at all, imagine someone who has been slaughtering ram in the past
would not be able to this year just because of the increase in price, we still
need to buy other things to support the ram like rice and other ingredients
which is also on the high side,” she said
Despite the increased cost, some
Nigerians have said they will not be deterred from their religious obligation,
stating that they will find a way to purchase the animals for sacrifice.
Food prices have been astronomically in
Nigeria since August 2019 when the country shut its borders from neighbouring
countries and continued unabated owing to supply chain disruptions induced by
the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent flood situation
Analysts said since the inflation figure
is a lag indicator, the impacts of fuel subsidies that trigger more than a 250
per cent increase in the pump price of petrol have not been priced in.
NBS said in the report that Nigeria’s
headline inflation sustained its uptrend in May, increasing by 19 basis points
to 22.41 per cent year on year.
Others are clothing and footwear at 1.70
per cent; transport at 1.45 per cent; furnishings, household equipment and
maintenance at 1.12 per cent and education at 0.88 per cent, and health at 0.67
per cent.
“Miscellaneous goods and services at
0.37 per cent; restaurant and hotels at 0.27 per cent; alcoholic beverage,
tobacco and kola at 0.24 per cent; recreation and culture at 0.15 per cent and
communication at 0.15 per cent.”
It said the percentage change in the
All-Items Index in April 2023 was 1.91 per cent on a month-on-month basis.
Director-General of the Centre for the
Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Muda Yusuf, said like, in many other
parts of the world, inflationary pressures in the Nigerian economy are yet to
abate.
“It remains a major concern for
stakeholders in the economy. The key drivers of food inflation have not changed
over the last few years. They include the following: the depreciating exchange
rate, rising transportation costs, logistics challenges, forex market
illiquidity, hike in diesel cost, climate change, insecurity ravaging farming
communities and structural constraints to economic activities.
“Others are Fiscal deficit financing by
the CBN is also a significant factor fueling inflation through high liquidity
injection into the economy. Tapering of monetary easing in the advanced
economies is also driving imported inflation and the depreciation in the
exchange rate.”
Vice President of Highcap Securities,
David Adonri, said one major imperative that would help to address the rising
cost of food commodities is for governments at all levels to urgently call for
an assessment of the level of damages caused by the flood and take necessary
steps to tackle it and curtail future occurrence.
According to him, the recent flooding
challenge is a threat to food security in the country as farms and farming
communities have been cut off by flood and farmlands submerged in almost all
the states in the country.
He called for more efforts from the apex
bank towards ensuring that farmers benefit from the existing government’s
agricultural schemes, as well as create fresh incentives to make their impact
more meaningful at this critical time.
Adonri noted that heightened insecurity
has already threatened food production in different parts of the country and
has, to a significant level, pushed farmers off their farmlands.
