Jamaat-e-Islami
for Enforcement Of Islamic System (Nizam-e-Mustafa) in Pakistan
October
30, 2021
Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan
----
LAHORE:
Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Siraj-ul-Haq has said that the implementation of
Nizam-e-Mustafa is the only way to change the destiny of Pakistan since the
Islamic system brought by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) changed the fate of the
entire world.
He
stated this while presiding over Nizam-e-Mustafa conference held here Friday
under the aegis of Ulema and Mashaikh Rabita Council. Other speakers included
JI’s Secretary General Ameer-ul-Azeem, Sajjada Nasheen Kot Mithan Sharif
Khawaja Moinuddin Mehboob Korija, President Ulema and Mashaikh Coordinating
Council Mian Maqsood Ahmed, Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore Zikrullah Mujahid,
Chairman Ulema and Mashaikh Coordinating Council Punjab Pir Ghulam Rasool
Owaisi and Pirzada Burhanuddin Ahmad Usmani.
Sirajul
Haq said had Islamic system of government been enforced after the independence in
the country Pakistan would have become a great welfare empire by now. He urged
upon the scholars to play their role in enforcement of Islamic system and back
the JI’s efforts to bring an Islamic democratic revolution in the country.
He
lamented that the government borrowed the highest quantum of foreign loans in
the country's history, thus burdening the coming generations into economic
slavery in three years. He said that people associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and
other Islamic-minded leaders had neither got written off loans of billions of
rupees nor their names appeared in Panama Leaks and Pandora's Papers.
He
said the nation was fed up with the tactics of PTI, PML-N and PPP. People with
Islamic and ideological minds must move forward and lead the nation. The coming
era belongs to Jamaat-e-Islami and Islamic parties who, if came to power will
put the country on the path of development, end the system of usury, normalise
law and order and brought all corrupt people to book, he added.

Pakistan
President Asks Ulema to Promote Islam’s True Message of Peace and Diffuse the
Tehreek e Labbaik Pakistan Protest
October
30, 2021
Pakistan's President Arif
Alvi AP/PTI(AP18-03-2020_000005B) (AP)
-----
ISLAMABAD:
President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday said Islam stresses upon affinity and harmony among
the mankind and called upon the Ulema (religious leaders) to play a positive
role in diffusing the ongoing tense situation in the country by promoting
Islam’s true message of peace.
The
president expressed these views in a consultative meeting with a delegation of
Ulema of Ahle-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat from different districts across the country
led by Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Noorul Haq Qadri at the
Aiwan-e-Sadr.
The
meeting deliberated upon various options to address the current situation in a
peaceful manner and emphasised on resolving the matter through negotiations.
President Alvi said since the establishment of Pakistan, the Ulema always
played a significant role in providing moral and religious guidance to the
people besides standing with the state in difficult times.
He
said the present government raised voice against Islamophobia and for the
sanctity of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) at all the international
forums and advocated the stance in an effective manner.
He
mentioned that the government also set up the Rehmatul Lil Alameen Authority,
which would promote the glowing teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) and guide the
nation to follow His footsteps for success in this life and hereafter.
Dr
Alvi said Islam is a religion of peace and urges the mankind to practice
brotherhood and tolerance. It also stresses upon protecting the lives and
property of each other and discourages acts of violence, he added.
The
Ulema expressed concern over the reports of violence causing harm to the lives
and property of general public. They stressed that violence would negatively
impact the image of the country as well as the religion of Islam. The Ulema
offered their support and services to resolve the situation peacefully and in
an amicable way.

Taliban’s
permanent representative-designate to the UN Suhail Shaheen said that the
international community should meet their pledges and provide the people of
Afghanistan with humanitarian aids as winter is arriving.
Suhail
Shaheen in a series of the Twitter posts said that the world must support
Afghanistan and unfreeze the assets of the Afghan people.
“The
winter is around the corner, so the immediate need for the International
Community to disburse on an urgent basis the recently announced nearly
one-billion-euro (some $1.2-billion) aid package pledged at a virtual G20
summit for Afghanistan, to all poor, vulnerable and displaced people.” Reads a
tweet.
Suhail
Shaheen has promised to be cooperating with channeled agencies and NGOs on the
ground to distribute aids.
The
senior Taliban member also asked for the resumption of development projects
pledged by the international community at the Geneva Conference 2020.
The
call on the resumption of development projects comes days after the WFP
suggested the donor countries allocate their promised development budget to
humanitarian aids to Afghanistan.
The
World Food Program has expressed concern over the upcoming winter season as
food shortage and health is at its worst condition and added that over 22
million people will be on the verge of starvation if not addressed the crisis.

UN
‘deeply concerned’ over Iran’s death penalty on child offenders: Human rights
head

2021

jail, north of Tehran, 13 June 2006. (File photo: AFP)
-----
A
senior member of the United Nations has spoken of his “deep concern” over
Iran’s death penalty policies and the number of executions of child offenders
during an interview with Al Arabiya.
Javaid
Rehman, special rapporteur on human rights for the UN, said Iran has one of the
highest numbers of yearly executions and remains one of the few countries in
the world to impose the death penalty on those who were minors at the age of an
alleged crime.
For
all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app.
Often,
he said, prisoners in Iran are subject to torture, leading to the concern over
false confessions and a death penalty punishment being handed to a prisoner for
a crime that he or she did not commit.
“Iran
continues to be one of the highest executers of the death penalty in the world
and there are over 80 offenses for which the Iranian Criminal Law applies the
death penalty,” he told Al Arabiya.
This
“broad remit” is why more than 250 individuals were sentenced to death and
executed in 2020 alone, he said.
Iran
has constantly been critiqued by human rights groups, including Amnesty
International and the Human Rights Watch, for its treatment of prisoners and
the country’s death penalty policy.
For
Rehman, he said his concerns are that the death penalty is applied to offenses
that are often not defined as the most serious crimes in international law.
Many
of the offenders who fall foul to Iran’s sweeping application of the death
penalty laws are minors, he added.
“I
am deeply concerned that Iran is one of the very few countries which continue
to execute child offenders.”
Rehman
clarified that this meant offenders who were minors at the age of which the
crime was said to have been committed.
Every
year, Iran carries out executions on offenders who were children at the time of
the alleged crime, said Rehman.
Iran’s
criminal code means that girls as young as nine, and boys as young as 15 are
defined as having “criminal responsibility,” he said.
‘Questionable’
prisoner treatment
Another
concern of the UN, said Rehman, was reports of Iran’s treatment of prisoners,
including that of political protesters in the country.
“We
have witnessed a number of political protestors and political dissidents, human
rights offenders [which] have been charged with national security offenses or
other offenses which carry the death penalty,” he said.
He
gave the example of 27-year-old Navid Afkari, a wrestler who was sentenced to
death over the murder of a security guard during a wave of anti-government
protests in 2018.
He
said he had been tortured into giving a confession.
Afkari
was executed by hanging in the southern city of Shiraz, according to state
media.
“Afkari
was executed in very unfortunate circumstances,” said Rehman. “There is clear
evidence that he was tortured to confess and when he attempted to retract his
confession that was not taken into account and in fact, this year, this
September, [another] individual who was witness to the violations or abuse of
his human rights died in very strange circumstances in prison.”
“I
urge Iran to ratify the convention against torture. Iranian law prohibits
torture, but we have evidence and we receive consistent information that
torture takes place.”
“So
I would very strongly urge the Iranian authorities not to convict these
individuals on the bases of their confessions because these confessions are
unreliable, they are not voluntary and they are very frequently, almost
inevitably, extracted through cohesion, through torture and through pressure.”
Political
protestors are often a target of Iranian authorities, said Rehman, pointing to
the fact that in November 2019, 304 innocent men, women and children were
killed by security forces using excessive force during protests.
Human
rights violations on ethnic groups
Rehman
said of those being handed a death penalty sentence, a “disproportionately
high” number are ethnic minorities.
They
include girls who are of Baloch descent, who live mainly in the southeastern
most edge of Iran.
“Because
of their descent, because they are asking for their ethnic, linguistic, and
political rights, they are arbitrarily detained, they are tried arbitrarily,
and their executions is put in place.”
“The
rights of religious minorities are regularly repressed. A number of minorities
such as Bahai are not recognized in the system and their genuine claims to have
their rights to freedom of religion or belief and to exercise their rights are
repressed and denied as part of deliberate state policy.”
This
includes the repression of women across the struct Muslim country, including
those that have the “Hijab forced upon them.”
“The
state forced its ideology on women which violates women’s fundamental human
rights.”

Hezbollah
Responsible For Lebanon’s Rift With Saudi Arabia, Says Former PM Hariri
October
30, 2021
Saad Hariri, Lebanon's former
prime minister, turns screws on Hezbollah. (AN file photo)
------
CAIRO:
Lebanese former Prime Minister Saad Hariri said on Friday that Iran-backed
Hezbollah was responsible for the rift with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf
countries.
“The
responsibility, first and foremost, in this regard lies with Hezbollah, and its
professed hostility toward the Arabs and the Arab Gulf states,” Hariri said in
a tweet.
He
issued the statement after Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador from Lebanon
"for consultation" and ordered the Lebanese envoy in Riyadh to leave
within 48 hours on Friday. Saudi Arabia also banned Lebanese products from the
Kingdom.
Riyadh's
actions were in response to comments made by Lebanon's Information Minister
George Kordahi about the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen. Kordahi, a
former newscaster of the Saudi broadcast company MBC, said that the Yemen's
Houthi militia were only defending themselves against aggression.
Saudi
Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and several other Arab states formed a
coalition in 2015 to help restore Yemen's legitimate government which was
ousted by the Houthis. Since then, the Iran-backed militia had been launching
ballistic missiles, rockets and explosive-laden drones against civilian targets
in Saudi Arabia.
The
dispute is the latest challenge to Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s cabinet which
is already in political paralysis over a row around the Beirut port blast
probe.
The
rift risks widening to more Gulf states with Bahrain also asking Lebanon’s
ambassador to leave shortly after the Saudi decision.
Mikati,
in a phone call with Kordahi on Friday evening, asked him to put the national
interest first and “take the right decision to fix Arab relations with
Lebanon,” a statement by his office said.
Sources
with knowledge of the matter had told Reuters the Saudi escalation was piling
pressure on Kordahi to resign in order to avert further consequences.
Mikati
earlier reiterated his government’s commitment to good relations with Saudi
Arabia and called for Arab partners to put the latest crisis behind them but
stopped short of announcing concrete action to remedy the crisis.
“We
also appeal brotherly Arab leaders to work and help to overcome this crisis in
order to preserve Arab cohesion,” the statement said.
Kordahi
has said the show was recorded nearly a month before he took office and he
would not resign over the incident, earning praises from the Hezbollah.
Mikati
has been hoping to improve ties with Gulf Arab states which have been strained
for years because of the influence wielded in Beirut by the Iran-backed Shiite
group Hezbollah.
“The
control of the terrorist Hezbollah on the decision-making of the Lebanese state
made Lebanon an arena for implementing projects for countries that don’t wish
Lebanon and its people well,” a Riyadh statement carried by SPA said.
In
April, Saudi Arabia banned all fruit and vegetable imports from Lebanon blaming
an increase in drug smuggling.
The
ban added to the economic woes of Lebanon, already in the throes of one of the
modern times’ deepest financial crises.

Taliban
foot soldiers unleash reign of terror with extra-judicial public killings
Omer
Farooq Khan
Oct
30, 2021
ISLAMABAD:
Afghanistan's Taliban leadership has been silent on the reign of terror
unleashed by their foot soldiers on the people across the country even as
recent videos of extra-judicial killings in public prove that the uncontrolled
Talibs from a rural and tribal Pashtun background are targeting people on mere
suspicion or for no reason at all. In one such video, a terror suspect was
killed with a rocket launcher.
In
the latest instance of unchecked brutality, Saeed, a local Afghan who wanted to
flee the country, was killed in broad daylight this week in the presence of
local people. Due to suspension of flights in Afghanistan, he opted to leave by
road. He was stopped at one of the check posts manned by the Taliban fighters.
Following an exchange of words, they dragged him out of the car. In a video
shared on social media, some Taliban members could be heard shouting at their
comrades not to open fire. But the enraged members pumped multiple bullets into
Saeed's body, killing him on the spot. The Taliban authorities in Kabul have
not yet spoken about the issue, leave alone take action against their fighters.
"This was one of the few videos that got leaked. I heard a lot of such
outrageous news, especially from Kandahar, on a daily basis," said Shair
Ahmad, a local Afghan.
Last
week, another barbaric video was shared on social media in which Taliban
fighters had publicly killed a person with a rocket launcher on suspicion that
he was an Islamic State-Khurasan (IS-K) member and was involved in a terrorist
attack on a mosque that had left dozens of worshippers dead. The operator of
the machine was surrounded by armed soldiers and a number of spectators, while
the suspect with his hands and feet tied was positioned to face the deadly
weapon at a distance of about 100 metres. It hasn't been confirmed who had
ordered this extra-judicial punishment for a suspect of terrorist attack.

Oct

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired a high-level meeting of the National
Security Committee (NSC) on Thursday to discuss the concerning situation
stemming from protests by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP),
reported local media.
Pakistan's
ministers, national security adviser and the services and intelligence chiefs
attended the meet and discussed the TLP protests, said ARY News.
The
country's top body of civil and military leaders also discussed matters related
to national security apart from the protests.
The
government is holding talks with TLP's imprisoned chief Saad Hussain Rizvi, as
protests have created chaos in Punjab cities. But the second round of the talks
concluded without any progress, as the deadlock persists between the TLP and
the Pakistan government.
The
two sides are expected to begin the third round of talks on Saturday, ARY News
reported citing sources.
A
spokesperson for the TLP had said that the proscribed organisation stands by
its demands that it will present before the government.
"Our
only demand from day one is the removal of the French ambassador," added
the spokesperson, according to The News International.

Taliban
sends envoy to take charge of embassy in Pakistan
Oct
29, 2021
ISLAMABAD:
A Taliban envoy has been sent to neighbouring Pakistan to take charge of the
Afghan embassy, two months after the hardline Islamist group seized power,
officials said Friday.
Sardar
Ahmad Khan Shokaib was appointed as first secretary in Islamabad, while Taliban
officials are also now in place at consulates in Peshawar, Karachi and Quetta.
The
new Taliban rulers have yet to be formally recognised by any foreign
government, including Pakistan, meaning Shokaib cannot assume the title of
ambassador.
"These
diplomats will take care of the affairs in the embassy and in the three
consulates," a Taliban source told AFP.
"They
will formally take charge on Monday," a source close to the Peshawar
consulate added.
The
last ambassador of the Afghan embassy was withdrawn by the former US-backed
government several months ago following the alleged kidnapping of his daughter
in leafy Islamabad.
A
spokesman for Pakistan's foreign ministry said the move would allow the embassy
to perform consular functions, with the country hosting millions of Afghan
refugees.
"I
understand they have made similar appointments in their embassies in some other
countries," the spokesman added.

TLP
‘used sub-machine guns’ in Kamoke clash
October
30, 2021
LAHORE/GUJRAT:
A recent high-level security meeting discussed with great concern a report that
the proscribed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan men had used sub-machine guns (SMGs)
targeting policemen during Kamoke violence.
A
senior police officer told Dawn a mobile phone footage which recorded the
disturbing scene was also presented in the meeting, showing five TLP armed men
using as many SMGs and firing straight at policemen who were running for
shelter.
The
police report said the armed men fired 80 rounds of SMGs some of which were
recovered from the scene and sent for forensic analysis.
Other
incidents of armed attacks on the law enforcers were also recorded at the same
point where two policemen died from multiple bullet wounds while 16 others
sustained injuries from shots fired by TLP using lethal weapons.
“It
shocked police high-ups from where the TLP was getting weapons and training to
use them,” the police official said.
He
said all the participants of the meeting had reached the point that the TLP had
been turned into a ‘militant group’ and the government must review its policy
seriously towards this outfit.
To
a question, the official said the Punjab police high-ups in the meeting also
discussed the possibility of involvement of some hostile agencies working
against Pakistan.
Meanwhile,
the TLP marchers resumed their journey from Gujranwala city on Friday, reaching
near Wazirabad till the filing of this report at 9pm.
The
participants, who were said to be between 5000 to 7000 in number, were mainly
traveling on buses, cars, motorbikes and chanting slogans in favour of their
demands.
It
was a smooth journey for the marchers on Friday as police removed its pickets
along the GT Road from Gujranwala to Wazirabad.
Official
sources said that the pickets and blockades had been removed in that particular
section to avoid any violent clash in the urban portion of the central Punjab
so that the urban population could not be disturbed or affected by the teargas
shelling, stone pelting etc.
Gujrat
is TLP’s next destination on Saturday where a major clash between the personnel
of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and TLP workers is being anticipated at
Chenab toll plaza on GT Road where trenches have been dug up and at least 100
containers have also been parked at all the bridges with the ultimate goal to
block the march.
Rangers
have already taken over the command of the security arrangements. A banner
carrying warning message from Punjab Rangers has been displayed just 500 meters
ahead of the Chenab toll plaza, marking a `red line’ for protesters not to
cross it otherwise they will have to face the consequences.

Afghan
‘diplomats’ take charge in Pakistan
October
30, 2021
ISLAMABAD:
The Taliban-appointed ‘diplomats’ have taken charge of the Afghan embassy and
consulates in Pakistan, according to officials familiar with the development.
Sardar
Muhammad Shokaib has started working as the first secretary in the Afghan
embassy in Islamabad.
Hafiz
Mohibullah, Mullah Ghulam Rasool and Mullah Muhammad Abbas have been assigned
to the Peshawar, Quetta, and Karachi consulates of Afghanistan.
Shokaib
would effectively be the Afghan charge d’affaires in Islamabad.
FO
spokesperson points to refugees, visa issues
The
Afghan embassy in Islamabad, it may be recalled, has been without an ambassador
since July when the last envoy under the previous regime Najibullah Alikhil
left because of alleged abduction of his daughter Silsila Alikhil and the
ensuing controversy.
According
to Voice of America, Taliban members who know Shokaib say he is an ethnic Pashtun
from Zabul province and has served in the Information and Cultural Department
in southern Kandahar and was associated with a Taliban magazine. He once worked
as the Taliban spokesman under the name of Qari Yousaf Ahmadi and was arrested
in Pakistan and later lived in Peshawar for several years.
Meanwhile,
officials posted to the consulates would function as the consul general.
Although
Pakistan does not recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government, but it
still issued visas to the appointed ‘diplomats’.

AMRITSAR:
Sikhs and Hindus living in Kabul and Jalalabad cities of Afghanistan held
separate meetings in Gurdwaras on Friday to contemplate their future plans in
wake of their stalled businesses, joblessness, and inflation under the new
Taliban regime in the country even as they continue to perform religious
services in their places of worship.
According
to sources separate meetings were held at gurdwara Kart-e-Paarwan, Kabul, and
gurdwara Nanak Darbar, Jalalabad, following which the Sikhs and Hindus of
Afghanistan issued appeals on social media urging the Indian government and
religious leadership to arrange for their evacuation at the earliest so they
could be with their remaining family members, mostly living in Delhi.
In
one of the videos, an elderly Sikh man is heard appealing to the Indian
government and Sikh leadership to come to their rescue. He says that male heads
of as many as 40 families were living in Kabul and their family members
including their elders and children were living in Delhi on refugee status.
“We
used to often come to Afghanistan to do businesses or labor work but the
situation in Afghanistan has changed beyond our expectation since August 15
(when Taliban took control of the country) and we are unable to travel back to
India, some of our family members are sick in Delhi and we need to be with them
at the earliest," said an elderly Sikh Afghan national.
In
another video, a Sikh from Jalalabad says that after the cancellation of their
visas by the Indian government, they had applied for e-visas but they were
still awaiting visa issuances. He said they had urged the Indian government as
well as Indian Sikh leadership to help them so they could return to India and
join their families.
TOI
talked to a Sikh leader of Kabul who, on condition of anonymity, informed that
there were around 210 Sikh and Hindu men, women, and children in Afghanistan
who wanted to fly to India as soon as possible.

Iran
Ambassador to UN call for ending blockade in Yemen, lifting Syrian sanctions
October
30, 2021
Ambassador
and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the
United Nations Zahra Ershadi called for ending siege in Yemen and lifting
sanctions against Syria.
"It
is a source of serious concern that in 2021, there are still over 6.8 million
Syrians that remain internally displaced while 5.6 million Syrian refugees are
also hosted in certain regional countries," Ershadi said, addressing the
Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.
"To
that end, the full and immediate removal of unilateral sanctions as well as
supporting the reconstruction of this country are essential," she added.
The
full text of Ershadi's statement is as follows:
In
the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Mr.
Chair,
I
would like to begin by acknowledging the activities of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
It
is quite alarming that, according to the UNHCR report, the number of refugees
and displaced persons is increasing.
It
underscores that the efforts aimed at addressing the underlying causes of this
trend must be redoubled.
It
is also disappointing that despite the extraordinary generosity of particularly
host countries, there is still a wide gap between the required funds and the
needs such funding can address, which stresses the necessity for substantially
increasing funds by donors.
Likewise,
it is unfortunate that in the past two years, COVID-19 has also worsened the
dire situation of refugees and the host countries.
To
address this situation, there is a strong need to include the sharing of
vaccines, especially with countries hosting large numbers of refugees, as has
also been stressed by the High Commissioner during the 72nd session of the
UNHCR Executive Committee on 8 October 2021.
It
is a source of serious concern that in 2021, there are still over 6.8 million
Syrians that remain internally displaced while 5.6 million Syrian refugees are
also hosted in certain regional countries.
Recalling
the conference on the return of refugees held in Damascus on 11 and 12 November
2020, we stress that every effort must be made to help them to return to their
original places of residence.
To
that end, the full and immediate removal of unilateral sanctions as well as
supporting the reconstruction of this country are essential.
In
this context, we warn about the political instrumentalization of the
international protection of refugees by certain States.
Likewise,
as reported by the UNHCR, Yemen remained the most acute humanitarian crisis
globally with some 20.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, with
displace persons to be four times more likely to be at risk of hunger.
To
provide the conditions for an end to this tragedy and bring peaceful resolution
to this crisis, the inhumane blockade imposed on this nation must be removed
fully and immediately.
One
of the major developments in 2021 in our region has been the sharp increase in
the number of internally displaced persons and asylum-seekers following the
withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and the subsequent developments.
As
a result, as the UNHCR has reported, around 570,000 people became newly
displaced within Afghanistan and an increasing number of individuals fled to
neighboring countries.
For
more than 40 years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has hosted one of the largest
populations of refugees despite it being subjected to inhumane unilateral
sanctions, particularly by the United States.
During
all of these years, only five percent of the total funds needed to support
refugees in Iran has been provided by the international community.
We
have indeed generously shared our much-needed resources with refugees and
supported them many times more than our fair share.
This
fact has been acknowledged on numerous occasions time and again at the
international level. In recent years, High Commissioner Grandi has affirmed in
this very Committee that despite economic pressures, the Islamic Republic of
Iran had continued to be an exemplary host country.”
Our
experience tells us that when there is a flow of Afghan asylum seekers that
might lead to Europe, Iran is urged to host them, and while some assistance is
provided at the beginning, as soon as the dust settles, the host country is
left alone almost completely.
Now
that Iran's economy has been and continues to be seriously affected as a result
of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as unilateral sanctions, along with the
developments in recent months wherein Iran has hosted more than 300,000 new
Afghan asylum seekers, we cannot host the displaced populations any longer.

Countries Possessing Nuclear Weapons Should Fulfil Disarmament Commitments

Takht
Ravanchi made the remarks after the UN Disarmament and International Security

"Unfortunately,
nuclear weapons holders are unwilling to live up to their nuclear disarmament

Turkish
preparing to launch offensive as deploying troops on Syrian border
October
29, 2021
Turkey
has dispatched hundreds of soldiers to northern Syria to launch an operation
against US-backed Kurdish forces.
Speaking
on the condition of anonymity some Turkish officials told Bloomberg on
Wednesday that the main goal of the planned offensive is to ensure that
two-thirds of Turkey’s 560-mile border with Syria is free from the presence of
Kurdish forces.
The
move by Ankara could also help the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
build up domestic support and put pressure on the US and Russia to pacify
Kurdish forces, officials added.
Officials
also noted that Ankara intends to seize areas in the south of the city of
Kobani in order to unite the territories under its control to the west and east
of the Euphrates River, Sputnik reported.
Another
potential target of the Turkish authorities could be the Menagh airfield, over
which the Kurdistan Workers' Party and the Syrian Kurdish Self-Defense Forces,
banned in Turkey, have established power.
On
13 October, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlud Cavusoglu claimed that Russia and
the United States have failed to fulfill their obligations and did not clear
Syria’s north from Kurdish militant units.
Later,
on October 21, the Turkish President threatened that the country's armed forces
will use heavy weapons to solve the problem and "not leave the situation
as it is."
Damascus
has repeatedly called the presence of Turkish forces on the border territory of
Syria illegal calling on Ankara to withdraw troops.
Also
in numerous occasions, the Syrian people have staged mass demonstrations in
Syria’s northwestern province of Aleppo to denounce the presence of Turkish
occupation forces in the conflict-plagued Arab country and demand their
complete withdrawal from the Syrian soil.
Ankara-backed
militants were deployed to northeastern Syria in October 2019 after Turkish
military forces launched a long-threatened cross-border invasion in a declared
attempt to push fighters of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) away
from border areas.

UNGA
Approves Iran's Draft Resolution on Nuclear Disarmament
2021-October-29
The
resolution proposed by Iran urges signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty
(NPT) to speed up their efforts in line with carrying out their commitments
under the previous agreements on destruction of nuclear weapons arsenals based
on principles of transparency, irreversibility and under international
supervision.
The
United Nations General Assembly First Committee is one of six main committees
at the General Assembly of the United Nations. It deals with disarmament and
international security matters. The First Committee meets every year in October
for a 4–5 week session, after the General Assembly General Debate.
According
to the NPT, nuclear countries have pledged that they will refute manufacturing
of nukes and transferring nuclear arms to other nations.
Iran’s
proposal emphasized that all member states of the United Nations are expected
to support creation of a Middle East free from nuclear weapons, which entails
Israel's accession to the NPT and allowing supervision of the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The
proposal also reiterated that non-nuclear states should be ensured that nuclear
powers will never use nukes against them.

Child
among 13 civilians killed by Houthi ballistic missile
October
29, 2021
SANAA:
A child was among 13 people killed when a missile fired by Yemeni rebels struck
a tribal leader’s home south of the strategic city of Marib, military and
medical sources said on Friday.
“A
Houthi ballistic missile hit the house of Sheikh Abdul Latif Al-Qibli in
Al-Jawba on Thursday evening during a meeting with tribal leaders fighting on
the government’s side,” a government military official said.
“Thirteen
people, including a child, were killed,” he added. The death toll was confirmed
by a medical source in the area.
As
well as the child, Thursday evening’s missile strike also killed four tribal
leaders, said the military official.
At
least 11 houses were damaged and 16 civilians were wounded in the attack,
according to the officials.
Yemen’s
Information Minister Moammar Al-Eryani said on Twitter that at least 12 people
were killed, including two sons of Al-Qibli, whose fate was unknown. The Houthi
“militia continues to systematically and deliberately bombard villages and
homes ... in order to inflict max casualties among civilians” forcing hundreds
of families and displaced to flee, he wrote.
The
Arab coalition backing Yemen’s government has been conducting a fierce air
campaign since Oct. 11 to prevent the rebels from reaching Marib city.

Saudi
Arabia expels Lebanese ambassador to Riyadh, recalls ambassador from Beirut
29
October ,2021
Saudi
Arabia said Friday that it was giving Lebanon’s ambassador 48 hours to leave
the country and recalled its envoy to Beirut.
Riyadh
also ordered the immediate halt to all Lebanese imports, Saudi Arabia’s
Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The
decision follows “the insulting statements” made during an interview given by
Lebanon’s Information Minister George Kordahi before he became a minister.
Kordahi
had said that Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis were defending themselves and
described the yearslong war in Yemen as “futile.”
Saudi
Arabia has affirmed its keenness on the Lebanese citizens residing in the
Kingdom, “whom it considers part of the fabric and bond that unites the Saudi
people and their Arab brothers residing in the Kingdom,” according to the
statement issued Friday. The ministry added that it did not consider that what
was said by Kordahi reflected the positions of the Lebanese community residing
in the Kingdom.
“These
statements represent a new episode of reprehensible and rejected positions
issued by Lebanese officials towards the Kingdom and its policies,” the
statement by the Saudi ministry read.
Kordahi
said on Wednesday that his remarks were his personal views, made before he was
appointed as minister and that he was committed to the current government’s
policy.
“I
am against Arab-Arab wars… accusing me of hostility towards Saudi Arabia is
rejected,” he said.
Lebanon’s
Prime Minister Najib Mikati, trying to avert diplomatic fallout, said that
Kordahi made those comments in an interview that was recorded more than a month
before he became a member of the cabinet and that his statements reflected his
personal opinion and had nothing to do with his government’s policy.
Saudi
Arabia said that the latest decision also stemmed from Beirut’s failure to take
the measures to stop the export of narcotics from Lebanon, “especially in light
of the terrorist Hezbollah’s control of all ports.”
“The
Kingdom’s government regrets the outcome of the relations with the Lebanese
Republic due to the Lebanese authorities’ ignoring of the facts and their
continued failure to take corrective measures to ensure the observance of the
relations that the Kingdom has long been keen on based on the brotherly
feelings and deep ties it has for the dear Lebanese people,” the ministry said
on Friday.

Europe
'My
door is always open': Greek premier on relations with Turkey
Magda
Panoutsopoulou
29.10.2021
Greece
is a very different country from the one that outgoing Angela Merkel first
visited as German chancellor a decade ago, according to Greek Prime Minister
Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“Merkel
was the voice of reason and stability. At times unfair, but decisive, as in
2015, when she refused the expulsion of Greece from Europe," Mitsotakis
said during joint statements with outgoing German chancellor after a meeting
between delegations of the two sides in Athens.
The
premier was referring to a financial crisis that led to years of painful
austerity measures for Greece, and some friction between Athens and its richer
neighbors in Berlin.
The
two leaders spoke about Greek-Turkish relations, how Greece faced the COVID-19
pandemic, and its financial recovery after years of recession.
Asked
about sometimes-fraught relations with Turkey, Mitsotakis said: “My door is
always open for a constructive dialogue.”
He
added, referring to Merkel: "I know your firm position in favor of
dialogue and the easing of tensions.”
He
said that “Western equanimity” often serves to encourage what he called
“Turkish arbitrariness,” adding: “It is time for European principles to be
transformed into European practice."
He
argued that Greece only wants friends and good relations with its neighbors,
guided by international law and the law of the sea, but it will not tolerate
threats.
“My
position is crystal clear," he stated.
Athens,
Berlin found 'common path' out of crisis
Merkel,
for her part, described German-Greek relations as “quite lively.”
“The
difficulties were a given when it came to the stability of the euro and I was
personally fully aware of the excessive burden that this meant and the
challenge that this meant for the people in Greece,” she said.
“In
the end, we managed to find a common path, to keep in step for Greece to remain
a member of the EU.”
As
for Turkish-Greek relations, which include such issues as disputes over setting
fair maritime boundaries, Merkel said there are a number of challenges, but
underlined the importance of continued dialogue with Turkey.
“We
discussed yesterday and today with intensity that United Nations resolutions
and international law must apply, and we believe that it is important but
difficult to find answers and solutions through dialogue," she added.
Earlier
on Friday, Merkel was received by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou at
the presidential mansion.

Germany
Rejects Sanctions Against Israel Over Settlement Expansion
Oliver
Towfigh Nia
29.10.2021
BERLIN
Germany
said Friday it would not support sanction threats over Israel's ongoing
settlement expansion, only a day after it issued a joint statement with 11
other European countries, reaffirming their "strong opposition" to
Tel Aviv's settlement policy in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Asked
at a routine press conference in Berlin whether Germany would back sanctions
against the Jewish state, Andrea Sasse, deputy spokeswoman for the Foreign
Ministry, said: "From our point of view, it is not helpful to speculate
about such consequences."
"The
declaration is definitely a strong sign and speculating here about the threat
of sanctions or the like would be wrong from our point of view. Besides, we
don't do it anyway," she added.
Sasse
was referring to Thursday's release of a joint statement by the spokespersons
of the foreign ministries of Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, and Sweden on Israeli
settlements.
"We
urge the Government of Israel to reverse its decision to advance plans for the
construction of around 3,000 settlement units in the West Bank. We reiterate
our strong opposition to its policy of settlement expansion across the Occupied
Palestinian Territories, which violates international law and undermines
efforts for the two-state solution," the statement said.
"We
call on both parties to build on steps taken in recent months to improve
cooperation and reduce tensions. We reiterate our call to implement United
Nations Resolution 2334 with all its provisions, with the aim of rebuilding
trust and creating the conditions necessary for promoting peace," it
added.
On
Tuesday, Germany lambasted Israel's continued settlement construction in the
Palestinian-run territories and occupied East Jerusalem, reiterating it was an
obstacle to a two-state solution.
"Very
concerned by Israeli publication of tenders for construction of more than 1,300
housing units in settlements in the West Bank. Settlements are contrary to
international law and a substantial obstacle to peace and a two-state solution.
They should stop," tweeted Christian Buck, director for Near and Middle
East and North Africa at the German Foreign Ministry.
Buck
was alluding to Israeli plans to build 1,355 homes in the occupied West Bank,
which was seized by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.

Christian-Muslim
Dispute Goes To India's Top Court Over Minority Scholarships For Students
October
30, 2021
India’s
top court has agreed to hear a dispute between Christians and Muslims over
minority scholarships for students after accepting an appeal filed by Kerala’s
state government.
The
Supreme Court bench of Justice L. Nageswara Rao and Justice B.R. Gavai on Oct.
29 ordered to serve notices on all the parties listed in the appeal as
respondents.
The
communist-ruled Kerala government in southern India moved the top court
challenging an order by Kerala High Court to quash the 80:20 ratio for
distributing scholarships meant for minority communities.
The
court in its May 28 order directed the state government to provide scholarships
among minority communities, mostly Muslims and Christians, in proportion to
their population.
The
state order allocated 80 percent of scholarship funds to Muslims, while only 20
percent was allocated to Christians and other minorities such as Jains,
Buddhists and Sikhs.
The
government claimed it had fixed the ratio based on the backwardness of the
minorities rather than the population, but Christians said the move was biased
and against natural justice.
The
high court in its order made it clear that the allocation favored Muslims in
the distribution of merit-cum-means scholarships meant for religious minority
communities and set aside a 2015 government order to this effect.
Of
the 33 million people in Kerala, 18 percent are Christians, while Muslims form
27 percent and Hindus 54 percent. In terms of numbers, Christians (6 million)
and Muslims (9.7 million) together form 15.7 million or 99.7 percent of
religious minorities in the state.
Church
leaders quoted the state census to argue that the order violated proportional
distribution of funding as Christians form 39 percent of the minority
population in the state while Muslims constitute 60 percent.
Soon
after the high court order, the Muslim community opposed it and urged the
government to appeal as they felt they had been discriminated.
But
Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) agreed with the order, saying “the
court had recognized the stand of the community” and urged the government to
implement the order.
The
government initially agreed to the Christians’ demand and said it would not
appeal. It tried to work out a win-win formula by increasing scholarships
whereby Muslims continued to get the same benefits and Christians’ grievances
were partially addressed.
Meanwhile,
some Muslim groups challenged the order and finally the government launched an
appeal, much to the disappointment of the Kerala Christian community,
especially the Eastern-rite Syro-Malabar Christians.
Archbishop
Andrews Thazhath, chairman of the public affairs commission of the Syro-Malabar
Church, in a statement on Oct. 27 urged the government to withdraw the appeal
and insisted that it should treat minorities equally as enshrined in the
constitution.
The
prelate said the Church was prepared to initiate legal proceedings.
“Yes,
now we will have to implead as one of the parties in the case since the Supreme
Court has admitted the appeal,” Father Jacob Palackapilly, deputy
secretary-general of the KCBC, told UCA News on Oct. 29.

Muslim
Cleric Gets 25-Year Jail For Rape Of Minor By Giving Her A False Marriage
Promise In Kerala
30th
October 2021
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
The special fast-track court for cases against women and children on Friday
sentenced a 24-year-old Muslim cleric for 25 years rigorous imprisonment on
charges of raping a minor girl by giving her a false marriage promise. Abdul
Rahman, a native of Manikyavilakom, was sentenced by Judge R Jayakrishnan for
the rape of a 15-year-old girl, who was a friend of the convict’s sister.
Special public prosecutor R S Vijay Mohan said the court has also imposed a
fine of Rs 1 lakh on Rahman. The failure to remit the fine would attract
another year of prison.
The
incident pertaining to the case occurred in 2018. Rahman befriended the girl,
who was then a Class X student. He later forced her into a physical
relationship by promising to marry her. However, he reneged from the promise
and began distancing from her. When the girl came to talk about the matter,
Rahman misbehaved with her. Hurt by his behaviour, the girl climbed atop his house
attempting suicide, but was attacked by the man. The rape came to light when
the Poonthura police took the girl for medical examination. She told the police
that Rahman threatened to kill her if she revealed her ordeal to others. The
court also directed the government to pay compensation to the girl.

Fake
News of Mosque Burning Circulated to Create Unrest in Tripura, Says Govt
OCTOBER
29, 2021
The
Tripura government on Friday alleged that a vested interest group from outside
had hatched a conspiracy to create unrest in the state and malign its image by
uploading a fake photograph of a burning mosque on social media. The police
have investigated and found that no mosque was burnt in Panisagar sub-division
in North Tripura district as claimed by social media posts, Information and
Culture Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said.
A
mosque was vandalised and two shops were set ablaze at Chamtilla area in
Panisagar subdivision on October 26 evening during a Vishwa Hindu Parishad
(VHP) rally taken out to protest against recent violence against Hindus in
neighbouring Bangladesh. Three houses and a few shops, reportedly owned by
members of the minority community, were also ransacked in nearby Rowa Bazar, a
senior police official had said earlier. There was no incident of burning of
any mosque in Panisagar. Fake news was uploaded on social media on October 26
by a vested interest group from outside to create unrest in Tripura and to
disrupt the process of development of all sections of people in the state,
Chowdhury said in a video message.
He
said it was a conspiracy to malign the image of the government, he said and
appealed to the people to maintain peace and not to believe in rumours. The
Tripura police had on Thursday also tweeted that no mosque was burnt during
Tuesday's protest rally and the photograph being shared of burning or damaged
'masjid' are all fake news.

At
least 30 arrested, dozens detained in Gurugram for disrupting Muslim prayers
October
29, 2021
New
Delhi: Dozens of people, many from Hindu right-wing groups, were arrested
Friday in India for disrupting Muslim prayer gatherings, local media reported,
in the latest sign of growing sectarian tensions in the country.
Hindu
groups have been pressuring authorities for weeks in the northern city of
Gurgaon on the outskirts of New Delhi to stop Muslims offering Friday prayers
in open spaces.
On
Friday police deployed several hundred extra officers and arrested at least 30
people as crowds of locals and Hindu groups chanted slogans, local media
reported.
Critics
have accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata
Party of persecuting minorities, including India's 200-million-strong Muslim
population.
Modi's
government rejects having a Hindu agenda and insists that people of all
religions have equal rights.
Haryana
state, of which Gurgaon — also called Gurugram — is the capital, is ruled by
the BJP.
It
is not the first time such an incident has been reported in the city, home to
scores of multinational companies.
In
2018, many from the majority Hindu community raised similar objections to
Muslims praying in the open.
District
officials mediated between the communities and identified around 35 open spaces
for Muslims to offer Friday prayers.

from different universities were detained at the protest site including
Fraternity Movement national secretary Aysha Renna, national secretary member
Waseem RS and national general council member Fayiza CA. Reports suggest that
they have been taken to Mandir Marg police station after being detained.

Nahdlatul
Ulama Issues Fatwa Against Crypto Currency As 'Haram'
October
30, 2021
The
local branch of the Indonesian religious organization Nahdlatul Ulama in East
Java has recently issued a fatwa on the status of cryptocurrencies under
Islamic law. According to the nonbinding opinion, digital currencies secured by
cryptography and used as a transaction instrument are to be considered “haram,”
which means forbidden.
The
decision came as a result of “bahtsul masail,” a discussion held by the
organization on Sunday, Oct. 24, the Indonesian news portal Tempo reported.
Members involved in the debate, which the article describes as “dynamic” and
“heated,” concluded that the use of cryptocurrency could undermine the legality
of financial transactions.
Another
point that was raised during the meeting is that crypto could serve as a tool
for committing fraud. An announcement published on the website of the East Java
Nahdlatul Ulama branch quotes Kiai Azizi Chasbullah, the “discussion’s
certifier,” as saying: “Participants of the bahtsul masail formed a view,
despite crypto already being acknowledged by the government as a commodity,
that it cannot be legalized under the [Islamic sharia].”
During
the meeting, they also decided that “cryptocurrency lacks any benefit from the
sharia point of view, as mentioned in fiqh,” or the Islamic jurisprudence.
According to the Indonesian publication, this position has been confirmed by a
“cryptocurrency expert” who took part in the religious debate to explain “the
proper practice in the digital currency’s use.”
The
Islamic organization’s fatwa comes after the government in Jakarta recently
indicated that Indonesia is not planning to impose a wide ban on
cryptocurrencies. Speaking to local media, the country’s Minister of Trade
Muhammad Luthfi stated that the executive power will not follow in the
footsteps of China which this year reiterated a ban on all crypto transactions and
launched a crackdown on bitcoin mining and trading.
The
popularity of cryptocurrencies has been growing in Indonesia, which is the
nation with the largest Muslim population in the world. Crypto trade has been
soaring this year and data from the 13 domestic exchanges authorized by the
country’s Futures Exchange Supervisory Board shows a 40% increase in
transactions during the first five months of 2021. Last year, the total volume
reached 65 trillion rupiah ($4.5 billion).

Islamist militant leader, wife killed in clash, says military
October
29, 2021
MANILA,
Oct 29 (Reuters) - Philippine troops killed a militant leader and his wife on
Friday, in what military officials described as a major blow to an Islamist
group suspected of carrying out a series of bombings and attacks in the
country's south.
Salahuddin
Hassan, the "overall emir" of the group, Daulah Islamiyah -
Philippines, and his wife Jehana Minbida, were killed in a special operation in
Talayan town, in Maguindanao province, the military said.
More
than two dozen militants, who were with the couple, managed to escape during
the 30-minute gunbattle with troops, according to the military.
"With
the death of their leader, we are certain that the group will crumble,"
said Major General Alfredo Rosario Jr., chief of the military's Western
Mindanao Command. "This is a significant breakthrough in our campaign
against terrorism in central Mindanao."
The
bodies of Hassan and his wife were recovered along with a R4 rifle, bandolier,
and ammunition magazines, military chief General Jose Faustino Jr said in a
statement.
Hassan's
group was also involved in a night market bombing in President Rodrigo
Duterte's hometown Davao City in September 2016 that left 15 people dead and
dozens injured, the military said. The military said Hassan's wife ran the
group's finances.

UN
urges Sudan army to show ‘restraint’ at protests
29
October ,2021
UN
Secretary General Antonio Guterres said Friday that Sudan’s military must show
“restraint” toward protesters, following deadly clashes between security forces
and demonstrators in recent days.
“Tomorrow
there is a manifestation that is announced,” Guterres told journalists ahead of
the G20 summit in Rome.
“I
urge the military to show restraint and not to create any more victims. People
must be allowed to demonstrate peacefully and this is essential.”
Protesters
in Sudan have vowed to continue demonstrating against a power grab by the army
on Monday, in which several top officials were arrested and the fragile
civilian-led government dissolved.
At
least eight people have been killed and 170 wounded in protests this week,
which on Thursday saw security forces fire tear gas and rubber-tipped bullets
at demonstrators, according to medics.
“I
want to reaffirm my strong condemnation of the coup and the need to
re-establish the transition system that was in place,” Guterres said.

Tunisia
dismantles Islamic State cell planning attack
October
29, 2021
TUNIS,
Oct 29 (Reuters) - Tunisian forces dismantled a cell linked to Islamic State in
the southern city of Tataouine that was planning to attack security and
military forces, the interior ministry said on Friday.
Six
years ago an Islamic State militant shot dead 39 foreigners on a beach in
Sousse, triggering an exodus of tourists and severely damaging Tunisia’s
economy.
Since
then Tunisia has grown more effective in preventing and responding to attacks,
but sleeper cells still pose a threat, especially with the return of jihadists
from Syria, Iraq and Libya.
“They
planned to carry out terrorist attacks targeting the security and military
units on the region (Tataouine), using explosive devices,” the ministry said in
a statement.

Sudanese
set for nationwide protests against military coup
30
October ,2021
Opponents
of a military coup in Sudan have called for nationwide protests on Saturday to
demand the restoration of a civilian-led government to put the country back on
a path to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule.
For
the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.
Thousands
of Sudanese have already taken to the streets this week to protest against
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s ouster of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s
cabinet in a coup that led Western states to freeze hundreds of millions in
aid.
With
at least 11 protesters killed in clashes with security forces this week,
opponents of the junta fear a full-blown crackdown and more bloodshed.
“The
army should go back to its barracks and give the leadership to Hamdok,” said an
activist who gave his name as Mohamed, who plans to protest. “Our demand is a
civilian country, a democratic country, nothing less than that.”
The
US, which is calling for the restoration of the civilian-led government, said
how the army reacts on Saturday will be a test of its intentions.
“We
call on the security forces to refrain from any and all violence against
protesters and to fully respect the citizens’ right to demonstrate peacefully,”
said a senior State Department official, briefing reporters on condition of
anonymity.
US
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sudan’s security forces must respect
human rights and any violence against peaceful demonstrators is “unacceptable”.
The
US continues to stand with “Sudan’s people in their nonviolent struggle for
democracy,” he said in a Twitter post.
With
internet and phone lines restricted by the authorities, opponents of the coup
have sought to mobilize for the protest using fliers, SMS messages, graffiti,
and neighborhood rallies.
Neighborhood-based
resistance committees, active since the uprising against deposed President Omar
al-Bashir that began in December 2018, have been central to organizing despite
the arrests of key politicians.
Bashir,
who ran Sudan for nearly three decades, was deposed by the army following
months of protests against his rule.
Khartoum
committee activist Hussam Ibnauf said the protest date had been well-advertised
and he was confident of a big turnout.
“Everyone
on the street ... they know about October 30. If they know, the rest is easy,”
he said.
There
was now “no fear factor”, he said.
No
debt relief
Burhan
has said he removed the cabinet to avert civil war after civilian politicians
stoked hostility to the armed forces.
He
says he is still committed to a democratic transition, including elections in
July 2023.
Hamdok,
an economist, was initially held at Burhan’s residence when soldiers rounded up
the government on Monday, but was allowed to return home under guard on
Tuesday.
The
US State Department official said he was, however, still under house arrest and
unable to resume his work.
The
US official said tens of billions of dollars of debt relief sought by Sudan
would not happen as long as the army was attempting to direct Sudan
unilaterally.
The
US and the World Bank have already frozen assistance to Sudan, where an
economic crisis has seen shortages of basic goods including food and medicine
and where nearly a third of the population are in need of urgent humanitarian
support.
Several
mediation efforts have emerged but there has been no sign of progress towards a
compromise.
Western
states are not looking to engage with the military or mediate any negotiation
until detainees are released and the army shows commitment to power-sharing as
set out in a transitional constitutional declaration, a Western diplomat said.
Many
Sudanese opponents of the coup oppose a compromise with an army of which they
are deeply mistrustful following several coups since independence in 1956.
Friction
had been mounting between the civilian government and the army leading up to
the latest takeover. One point of tension had been the pursuit of justice for
alleged atrocities in Darfur in the 2000s, with the International Criminal
Court asking Sudan to hand over Bashir.

Sudanese
coup leader says he is trying to persuade ousted premier to return
29
October ,2021
Sudan’s
military coup leader, facing pressure at home and abroad to restore power to
civilians, said a technocratic prime minister could be announced in a week, and
he is still trying to persuade the man he ousted to return and form a new
government.
Western
countries have cut off hundreds of millions of dollars in desperately needed
aid to Sudan since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan dissolved a power-sharing
government led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Monday.
The
power-sharing government was meant to steer Sudan to elections in 2023 after
long-serving ruler Omar al-Bashir was toppled two years ago.
Opponents
of this week’s coup have called for mass demonstrations on Saturday. At least
11 protesters have been killed in clashes with security forces so far this
week.
The
US and United Nations dialed up the pressure on Burhan on Thursday, when the
Security Council called for the restoration of the civilian-led government and
President Joe Biden said his nation like others stood with the demonstrators.
In
comments to the Russian news agency Sputnik published on Friday, Burhan said
the new government would be led by a technocrat. “We will not interfere in the
choice of the ministers,” he said.
The
cabinet would be chosen the prime minister who would be “agreed upon by
different sections of the Sudanese people”, he said.
He
also said new members would be appointed to the Sovereign Council, a
civilian-military body which he dissolved along with the cabinet.
On
Thursday night, Burhan left open the possibility of Hamdok becoming prime
minister again, saying the army was negotiating with him to form the new
government.
In
a speech to groups who helped remove Omar al-Bashir in 2019, he said
consultations were underway to select the prime minister.
“Until
this night, we were sending him people and telling (Hamdok) ... complete the
path with us. Until this meeting with you, we were sending him people to
negotiate with him and we are still having hope,” Burhan said in the speech.
“We
told him that we cleaned the stage for you ... he is free to form the
government, we will not intervene in the government formation, anyone he will
bring, we will not intervene at all”.
Hamdok,
an economist and former senior UN official, was initially held at Burhan’s
residence when soldiers rounded up the government on Monday. He was allowed to
return home under guard on Tuesday.
Hamdok’s
allies say he has refused requests by the coup leaders to cooperate, and has
demanded civilian power-sharing be restored and arrested ministers freed.
The
office of the UN representative to Sudan said on Thursday he had offered to
facilitate a political settlement towards restoring the transition during a
meeting Burhan.
“March
of millions”
With
authorities restricting internet and phone signals, protesters have been
handing out fliers calling for a “march of millions” on Saturday under the
slogan “Leave!”
Security
forces fired at protesters on Thursday night in Bahri, across the river from
the capital Khartoum, using live and rubber bullets, witnesses said. A doctors
committee said one person was killed in those clashes while two others were
wounded and in critical condition.
Burhan’s
move reasserted the army’s dominant role in Sudan since independence in 1956,
after weeks of friction between the military and civilians over issues
including whether to hand Bashir and others to The Hague to face charges of war
crimes.

Twenty
operatives from Nigeria’s security agencies were massacred in Zamfara state in
the northern area of the country on Friday, according to authorities.
The
killings occurred in the Shinkafi Local Government Area and the victims’ bodies
were set ablaze by notorious bandits operating in the state.
Security
operatives were sent to a village where bandits have been ravaging for some
time without any sign of a slowdown.
Spokesman
of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in the state, Aminu
Mary, confirmed the killings and said the state commandant of the corps had
gone to the scene to ascertain what happened.
The
state government said more than 2,000 suspected bandit informants have been
arrested since it cut telecommunication services and the military launched an
offensive, according to Zamfara state Commissioner for Information Ibrahim
Dosara.
“The
government has set up a situation room where complaints are being received to
ensure prompt action,” said Dosara.

288
bodies demand White House to condemn Israel’s crackdown on rights groups
October
30, 2021
In
a joint letter sent to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the 288
signatories said, "Smearing the promotion and defense of human rights as
terrorist activity is a dangerous, well-worn tactic of authoritarian regimes
and a shameful political maneuver to undermine the vital work of these
organizations."
"These
actions by the Israeli government are a clear attack on human rights. As such,
we urge you to issue a swift rejection of this unprecedented attack on
Palestinian human rights organizations and the attempt by the Israeli
government to shut down, delegitimize, isolate, and chill a growing human rights
movement," the letter added.
The
letter continued, "As groups committed to social justice, civil rights,
and universal human rights, we have seen firsthand the ways that the charge of
terrorist and the so-called war on terror threatens not only international
human rights defenders, but also social movements and marginalized communities
here in the US: Indigenous, Black, brown, Muslim, and Arab activists and
communities have similarly faced silencing, intimidation, criminalization and
surveillance under such baseless charges."
The
signatories warned that the threat against the Palestinian human rights
movement "is a threat against movements for social justice everywhere, and
in order to protect human rights and human rights defenders, all states must be
held accountable for taking such manifestly unjust actions."
"We
agree with 17 UN Special Rapporteurs that the freedoms of association and
expression must be fully respected in order to enable civil society to perform
its indispensable work, and cannot be undermined by the manifestly egregious
misuse of counterterrorism and security legislation."

US
slaps sanctions on Iran's drone program, will continue to hold Tehran
accountable
29
October ,2021
The
US slapped new sanctions on Iran and its drone program on Friday, warning that
Tehran’s irresponsible acts would continue to be punished.
“Today,
the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)
designated members of a network of companies and individuals that have provided
critical support to the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) programs of Iran’s
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its expeditionary unit, the IRGC
Qods Force (IRGC-QF),” a statement from the Treasury Department read.
The
commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force UAV Command, Saeed Aghajani, was also
designated.
Aghajani
oversaw the July 29, 2021 attack on Mercer Street tanker off the coast of Oman
and was behind the UAV attack against a Saudi Arabian oil refinery in 2019, the
Treasury said.
Drones
from Iran’s UAV program were used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Palestinian Hamas,
Kataeb Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis, the Treasury Department said.
The
drones were also making their way to Ethiopia, “where the escalating crisis
threatens to destabilize the broader region.”
“Lethal
UAVs have been used in attacks on international shipping and on US forces,” the
Treasury Department statement read.

US

US
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced nearly $144 million in additional
humanitarian assistance for the people of Afghanistan on Thursday.
“As
part of our enduring commitment to the people of Afghanistan, the United States
announced today nearly $144 million in humanitarian assistance to those
affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis,” Blinken said in a statement.
“This
assistance brings the total U.S. humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and for Afghan
refugees in the region to nearly $474 million in 2021, the largest amount of
assistance from any nation,” he added.
Blinken
noted that the assistance is provided directly to independent humanitarian
organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), International Organization
for Migration (IOM), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other
international and non-governmental organizations.
“This
funding provides support directly to some of the more than 18 million
vulnerable Afghans in need in the region, including Afghan refugees in
neighboring countries,” he said.
The
additional humanitarian assistance “will enable our partners to provide
lifesaving protection, food security support, essential health care,
winterization assistance, logistics, and emergency food aid in response to the
growing humanitarian needs exacerbated by healthcare shortages, COVID-19,
drought, malnutrition, and the impending winter,” he said.
Blinken
added that the funding will “benefit the people of Afghanistan and not the
Taliban, whom we will continue to hold accountable for the commitments they
have made.”
