Islamic State recruits in Hyderabad: The designs of self-styled jihadists
Jul 04, 2016
After the extremist ideologues of Islamic State have avowedly declared the ongoing Islamic month of Ramzan as “the sacred month of mayhem for the non-believers”, their vicious mission of wanton killing continues unabated.
The recent brutality in Dhaka, Bangladesh's teeming capital, which has left 28 innocent people dead in a restaurant siege and many others injured, came as part of the well-worked-out jihadist design. It should be seen in the spate of terror strikes which were carried out in Paris, Belgium, Florida and Istanbul in a succession. The fact that the self-styled jihadists have killed Hindus, free-thinkers, secularist intellectuals, independent writers and bloggers in the past two years, is substantial evidence. It is not just a speculation. Neither could it be called a knee-jerk action of media outlets that immediately call the Islamist extremist groups to be operating in such attacks.
With 20 foreigners hacked to death, it was not only the worst terrorist attack on the non-combatant Bangladeshi civilians and foreigners. Rather, it was a well-worked-out anti-democratic strike on the growing culture of rationalists, free-thinkers and liberal democrats in the country. One wonders if India, the land of an overwhelming number of rationalists and secularists, will be the next target of this poisonous jihadist tentacle. Clearly, there are substantial reasons behind it.
Among the various reasons is the growing radicalization of the gullible Muslim youth recruited by the so-called Islamic State (IS) from Hyderabad. The recent arrest of IS recruits in this Indian metropolitan city shows that the radical jihadist outfit is gaining foothold in the country. Once the IT capital of India, Hyderabad is slowly becoming a hub for online extremist elements using social media to radicalise the city's techno-savvy Muslims. According to the Indian intelligence sources, nearly 25 young Muslims from India have joined the IS. Now, when five more IS recruits have been arrested from Hyderabad, it is distressing for our pluralistic country that the threat of terror strikes and communal clashes in future is looming large.
Not many know that IS is propagating a virulent and brazenly un-Islamic concept of Ghazwah-tul-Hind, which literally means: military expedition against India. Our political leaders are the most naive and gullible Indian citizens who are still unaware of this pernicious terrorist design to strike on our country in the name of Ghazwah-tul-Hind.
The reason why India is vulnerable to the terrorist designs of IS is not difficult to find. This country constitutes the world's third largest Muslim population at nearly 175 million. Though the religious and political Muslim leaders loudly claim that they will not let the Indian Muslims fall prey to the jihadist indoctrination of ISIL, the recent arrests of IS recruits and experts’ reviews show that the terror outfit is moving ahead towards its nefarious design in India — mobilizing the gullible Muslim youth to retaliate for the communal riots. A counter-terror official of Indian intelligence has clearly stated that "IS modules being set up in India is more dangerous than some youth wanting to travel to Iraq and Syria to join the terrorist group."
While we require an intellectual debate and in-depth analysis of what was the driving force behind the radicalization of young Muslims of Hyderabad, the mainstream Indian Muslims, particularly the Islamic clergy and ulema, as well as the middle class Muslim families must take it as a note of introspection. Regrettably, as the radical Islamists in several parts of the world are perpetrating mindless violence loudly claiming it ‘faith-inspired’, Muslim religious scholars are not doing enough to debunk the extremist ideology behind these nefarious activities. This makes it imperative for us to analyze what wrong is going on in the religious discourses in the community.
Let’s not forget that the self-styled Islamic caliphate of al-Baghdadi is based on a dichotomous and exclusivist religious worldview that was coined in the medieval era. Going by this, the world populace is divided into two jurisprudential categories — “Dar al-Kufr (land of disbelief) and Dar al-Islam (land of belief)”. While this dichotomous worldview of ‘us’ versus ‘them’ is conducive to violent extremism, unfortunately it still goes unchecked in our Muslim community. It is being taught in the large corpus of jurisprudential Islamic literature, not only in the Middle Eastern seminaries, but also in the South Asian Islamic seminaries, particularly in Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.
More deplorable is that the Islamic clergy and imams, who rule the roost, have not yet evolved any progressive, robust and non-conformist interpretation of the seemingly exclusivist religious underpinnings and references that the jihadists often misconstrue to further their nefarious ends. Be it the Islamic doctrine of nahy’ anil munkar (forbidding evil), al-wala wal bara (loyalty with believers and disavowal with non-believers), hakimiyah al-ilah (God’s rule over the earth) or Khilafah Islamiyah (obligation of Islamic caliphate), these medieval jurisprudential concepts are still being sought after in lieu of Islamic shari’ah. According to the radical Islamists, they are not entitled to be called ‘true Muslims’, unless these Islamic laws are enacted by them wherever they exist.
The retrogressive creed of replacing all democratic countries with an ‘Islamic caliphate’ is the plain reason why the extremist Islamists keep playing havoc across much of the democrat and liberal world, resulting into the recent brutal attacks in Paris, Brussels, Orlando, Istanbul and Dhaka. If young and gullible Muslims in India are also being indoctrinated into the same twisted and obsolete religious underpinnings through the Wahhabism-inspired rhetoric, it is no surprise that they are likely to be captivated by the radical recruiters, be they from the outfits affiliated with Al Qaeda's South Asian wing or the Islamic State of Syria and Levant (ISIL). At this juncture, we are amazed at the naivety of our leaders who have rebuffed any suggestion that the IS has a foothold in the country. We wish it could be true!

Baghdad's Suicide Bombing Death Toll Rise to More Than 215
July 4th, 2016
TEHRAN (FNA)- At least 215 people were killed and more than other 200 people were wounded in Sunday’s Baghdad suicide bombing claimed by the ISIL terror group, officials said, as the toll made the attacks one of the deadliest ever in Iraq.
The suicide car bombing, which ripped through a crowded shopping area and sparked infernos in nearby buildings, also inflicted huge damage on properties in the area, security and medical officials, All Iraq News reported.
The area in the capital’s Karrada district was crowded with people shopping ahead of the holiday marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi vowed “punishment” for those responsible, and his office declared three days of mourning for the victims of the attack.
Abadi also ordered changes aimed at addressing long-standing flaws in Baghdad security measures, including scrapping fake bomb detectors that were in widespread use at checkpoints years after the man who sold them to Iraq was jailed for fraud in Britain.
The bombing came just a week after Iraqi forces won a major victory over ISIL, retaking the city of Fallujah, one of the terror group’s last remaining strongholds in the country.
ISIL’s defeat there was compounded by a devastating series of air strikes targeting militants as they sought to flee the Fallujah area.
Iraqi and US-led coalition aircraft destroyed hundreds of ISIL vehicles and killed dozens of fighters in two days of strikes against terrorists convoys after the end of the Fallujah battle, officials said.
Bombings in the capital had decreased since ISIL overran large areas North and West of Baghdad in June 2014, with the militants apparently more concerned with operations elsewhere.
But the group has struck back against Iraqi civilians after suffering military setbacks, and in May, Baghdad was rocked by a series of blasts that killed more than 150 people in seven days.

Turkey offers assistance to Iraq after deadly ISIL attack
July 4th, 2016
Turkey has offered assistance and pledged solidarity with the people of Iraq after terrorist attacks in Baghdad killed over 150, according to Anadolu Agency.
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım phoned Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Ibadi on July 3 to extend the condolences of the Turkish people over the attack carried out by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) over the weekend, the agency reported on July 4.
Yıldırım strongly condemned the attack and said Turkey stood by Iraq, its people and its government during the difficult time, the agency said, adding that the premier also expressed Turkey’s readiness to transport the wounded to Turkey for treatment.
Both Turkey and Iraq are being targeted by terrorists and their security and stability are linked, Yıldırım told his Iraqi counterpart, underlining the importance of a fight against all terrorist organizations without differentiating whether it is ISIL or the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Yıldırım also reiterated that Turkey regarded the sensitivities of Iraq as its own and would continue to stand with Iraq in its anti-terror fight.
The agency said al-Abadi thanked Yıldırım for his messages and expressed his willingness to improve bilateral cooperation on the basis of common interests and sensitivities. Al-Abadi also said the Iraqi people felt the pain of the terrorist attack that hit Istanbul last week.
The relationship between Turkey and Iraq has been strained after the former established a military base near Mosul to ostensibly train local Iraqis in their fight against ISIL. The Bashiqa Base is still functioning after Turkey reduced the number of its troops in a bid to reduce tensions with Baghdad.
In a written statement late on July 3, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the attack in Baghdad, offering his sympathy for the people of Iraq.
“Turkey can best understand the pain caused by bomb attacks in Iraq. The bloody-handed terrorist organization, DAESH, has also just conducted a terror attack that claimed the lives of 45 innocent civilians in our country,” Erdoğan said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIL.
DAESH has “declared war against Islam and Muslims by using the name of Islam,” Erdoğan added.
“We should all together carry out a strong struggle against this organization that harms Islam. After the Baghdad attacks, we call on the entire Islamic world and humanity to cooperate to save our region and the world from this bloodsucking monster,” he said.
Erdoğan stressed that “supporting terror and terrorist organizations can never be justified,” adding that “countries which try to carry out their plans through using these organizations will inevitably become the next targets of terrorists.”
“That’s why we warn everybody, Western countries, particularly members of the U.N. Security Council to maintain a principled line in the face of terrorist organizations,” he said.

ISIS execute three alleged Taliban fighters in Nangarhar
Mon Jul 04 2016
ISIS execute Taliban in NangarharThe loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group have executed at least three men in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.
The terror group claimed that the men were arrested during an operation by the fighters of the group and they belong to Taliban group.
The group initially released the pictures of the men in social media and later issued more pictures which purportedly shows the execution of the men.
The three men are shown in orange jump suits as they are forced to kneel in the ground while a child is executing them with a pistol.
The group also released several other pictures which purportedly shows coordinated attacks on several outposts of the Taliban group in Nangarhar province.
This comes as the loyalists of the terror group released several pictures which purportedly showed the execution of at least three individuals allegedly for having links with the Taliban group.
In the meantime, the loyalists of the terror group launched a major attack on police check posts in Kot district late last month.
The latest major attack by ISIS loyalists in Kot district comes as the terror group received major blows during the recent months as a result of the Afghan and US forces routine operations.
The US forces stepped up airstrikes against the ISIS loyalists earlier this year after they were granted more authorities by President Barack Obama.
The increased raids against ISIS loyalists followed amid concerns that they are attempting to expand foothold in the country besides attempting to consolidate operations with the terror group in Iraq and Syria.

Bengali Muslims Cry Foul Over Detection of Illegal Immigrants
Jul 04, 2016
Bengali Muslim Faizur Rehman sobbed helplessly while pleading for leniency when a court last month dismissed his claim of being Indian and ordered his detention.
He was born in India in 1949 but his name did not figure in its National Register for Citizens (NRC) because of a minor glitch, claims Rehman, a resident of Barpeta district in the northeastern Indian state of Assam.
“According to the 1951 NRC, my name is mentioned as Faizul Bepari – probably an error on the part of the official who was updating the list then. The court said my name did not match with official records,” Rehman, 67, told BenarNews before he was taken to a detention camp in Assam where suspected illegal immigrants are housed.

Turkey sends Gaza aid after six-year rift with Israel ends
July 4th, 2016
A Turkish ship carrying 11,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid for Gaza has arrived in the Israeli port of Ashdod.
It is the first such shipment since 2010, when 10 pro-Palestinian Turkish activists in a flotilla were killed in clashes with Israeli commandos.
The vessels were trying to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The incident caused a rift between the two countries, but they agreed to restore relations in a deal that was signed last week.
The Lady Leyla ship was carrying food, clothing and toys intended to arrive in Gaza in time for Eid celebrations marking the end of Ramadan.

Syria main challenge in Turkey's reconciliation processes, says former envoy Sanberk
July 4th, 2016
While mending fences with Israel and Russia are pragmatic moves that will bring Turkey out of isolation, many challenges remain ahead in the reconciliation processes, according to a former diplomat.
The deal with Israel is fragile, while the Kremlin’s expectations for modifications of Turkey’s policy on Syria will prove to be the key challenge, said Özdem Sanberk, the president of the International Strategic Research Association (USAK).
The deal with Israel was under negotiation for years. Why was it signed now?
Israel did not have very big strategic or security reasons to make the deal. It was not expecting an imminent threat from Syria, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is not targeting Israel, at least for now, and it has reduced its objection to the Iranian [nuclear] deal.

Security officials in Bangladesh have stepped up a search for evidence and the possible masterminds behind a deadly attack in a popular cafe in the capital, Dhaka, as the prime minister visited a stadium where the bodies of the victims were taken.
At least 20 hostages, including 18 foreigners, and two policemen died in Friday night's attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group - a claim denied by the government.
Six attackers were killed by paramilitary forces in the final stages of the 10-hour standoff at the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe, but one suspect was taken alive and was being interrogated by Bangladeshi intelligence.

04/07/2016
Bangladeshi author-in-exile Taslima Nasreen on Monday accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of backing extremist elements for votes, saying that she never took any action against the killers and instead protected them because she feared losing power.
"Sheikh Hasina created fundamentalist organisations. She protects fundamentalist organisations and fundamentalists who are involved in the killings of atheist bloggers and secular writers because she wanted to get votes from religious masses. She didn't take any actions against the killers," Nasreen told CNN-News18 over the phone.

July 4th, 2016
ISLAMABAD: Imam-i-Kaaba Mohammad Saleh Abu Abdul Majid’s scheduled visit to the National Press Club (NPC) on Sunday was cancelled due to security reasons.
Security agencies claimed that two terror groups have entered the federal capital. They said though the groups had not been sent to target the Imam-i-Kaaba, they can find him as a soft target.
Though the Imam-i-Kaaba returned to Saudi Arabia after his visit to Pakistan on Sunday evening, the claims made by the agencies about the arrival of the terror groups in the city before Eidul Fitr created panic.

Refugees seem to be liability for both Pakistan and Afghanistan
July 4th, 2016
PESHAWAR: Around three million Afghan refugees (registered and unregistered) seem to be a liability both for Pakistan and Afghanistan. A humanitarian problem is being associated with other issues like border management and terrorism etc.
Pakistan following the spirit of “Ansar-i-Madinah” had welcomed millions of Afghans with open arms in early 1980s. Islamabad is now abandoning the spirit of Muslim brotherhood and asking refugees that “enough is enough.” Afghans are blamed for the country’s law and order situation, terrorism and unemployment.
Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz’s frank statement that “refugee camps have become safe havens for terrorists” indicates major shift in the Islamabad’s Afghan policy.

OIC, China supporting Pakistan's stance on drone strikes: Lodhi
July 4th, 2016
NEW YORK: Pakistan's Ambassador to the UN Maleeha Lodhi on Sunday said the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) and China are supporting Pakistan's stance on drone strikes in the UN.
Talking to Geo News, the ambassador who had demanded immediate cessation of such strikes in the UN General Assembly on Saturday, said Pakistan has successfully gathered support over the issue, and OIC, China and a number of other countries agree over the point that UN should take notice of the Human Rights Council's (HRC) reports on the subject.
The HRC called on the international community to stop drone strikes as they are counter productive and further fuel extremism and terrorism.
"We got the opportunity as UN reviews its 2006 global counter terrorism strategy biannually and the review takes place through a resolution, it is in a way a norm-setting exercise and legal demands are also endorsed. My team and I based our stance over Human Rights Council's reports on drones," said Lodhi.

Anti-Muslim protests disrupt normal life in Myanmar's Rakhine State
04/07/2016
Myanmar's ethnically divided Rakhine State witnessed mass protests, as thousands of Buddhists, including monks, demonstrated against a government edict to refer to Muslims as the 'Muslim communities of Rakhine' rather than describing them as 'Rohingya' or 'Bengalis'.
Anti-Muslim rhetoric has been on the rise across Myanmar recently, as Buddhist mobs ransacked and torched two mosques in the last week .
Myanmar has struggled to contain bloodshed on the basis of religion in recent years, especially in Rakhine State where Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims are at loggerheads.

Refugees From Myanmar: Rohingyas In Kelambakkam
04/07/2016
Rohingyas are one of the most persecuted and unwanted people in the world today.
Thousands of them were forced to flee from their country: they have taken shelter in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Philippines, Australia and Saudi Arabia. Nearly 10,000 of them have been lured to come to India by Dalals (agents). The dalals portray India as a safe haven, where employment is easily available, they could live in comfort and, what is more, they could lead a secure and peaceful life. They cross the porous Bangladesh-India border, come to West Bengal and take the train to different parts of the country. The Rohingyas are concentrated in New Delhi, Jammu, Rajasthan, Hyderabad, and, to a lesser extent, in Tamil Nadu and in Kerala.

Tories urged to offer assurances to EU citizens living in UK
July 3, 2016
Leading figures from the leave and remain campaigns have called on the Tory leadership candidates to make an “unequivocal statement” that EU citizens living in the UK are welcome after a spate of hate crimes since the referendum.
There are between 2 million and 3 million EU citizens living in the UK and 1.2 million British citizens living in other EU countries. Uncertainty and anxiety among EU nationals living in Britain have spread following limited assurances so far provided by the prime minister, David Cameron, and the home secretary, Theresa May, currently the frontrunner to succeed him.
During his resignation, Cameron said the status of EU nationals in the UK would not change while negotiations over Britain’s future relationship with the EU were live, a pledge repeated by May in her leadership launch.

Far-right terrorism in Perth
July 3, 2016
A petrol bomb attack on a car parked outside a Perth mosque on the night of 28 June was an act of racist hatred against Perth’s Muslim community.
The attack, which set the car alight, was accompanied by the words “F--- Islam” spray-painted on the Thornlie mosque wall, in Perth’s southern suburbs, while hundreds were praying.
That this was an act of terrorism from right wing racist bigots was plain to see. And it was not the first. A pig’s head was left at the Southern River mosque three days earlier, and another at the University of WA mosque earlier this year. Thornlie and Rockingham mosques were both vandalised with graffiti in 2014.
Ahmed, who witnessed the attack, told WA Today that attacks on Australian Muslims are on the rise. Ahmed had ceased praying at the Southern River mosque after it was splattered with pig’s blood, believing that the Thornlie mosque, located next to the Australian Islamic College, would be safer.

Bosnian Muslims in Southern California may not fit the stereotype but they feel the prejudice
July 4, 2016
The two blond-haired boys stood in front of a stage in an Irvine community center, disinterested in the Arabic calligraphy displayed just inches away in gilded picture frames. Their attention belonged not to the Koranic verse but to a copy of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”
Little girls in crimson, gold and blue clothing placed figurines and antique vases on the stage, their hair the color of straw like many of their mothers.
Soon, the adults unrolled prayer rugs and used iPhone apps to find the Qibla – the direction to Mecca – before the sun set. They broke bread for Iftar, a feast celebrating the end of the Ramadan daily fast.

Islamophobia deserves to be a religious freedom issue
July 4, 2016
Today marks the conclusion of the Fortnight for Freedom, the two-week period of prayer and action to defend religious freedom organized by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Each year since 2012, the events of the fortnight have focused on conscience exemptions for religious institutions on issues such as contraception and same-sex marriage.
But there’s another issue that also deserves the attention of Catholics who are concerned about religious freedom in America: Islamophobia.
