‘If you have to stay in Bengal…’: Agnimitra Paul’s stern warning to Humayun Kabir over ‘qurbani’ on Bakrid
May 22, 2026

Image: IANS
--------
Days after Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir “warned” the BJP government in West Bengal over attempt to prohibit ‘qurbani (ritualistic animal sacrifice)’ on the upcoming ‘Bakrid’ festival, state minister Agnimitra Paul said that he was welcome to go to any other state or outside the country to other Islamic nations if he cannot follow the rules of Bengal.
“Humayun Kabir, if you have to stay in Bengal, then you have to follow the rules of Bengal. If you think you cannot follow the rules of the state, then you are welcome to go to any other state where you ae allowed or outside the country to other Islamic nations. If you have to stay in India, then you have to follow the rules here,” ANI quoted Paul as saying.
Notably, Humayun Kabir made the statement earlier in response to the Suvendu Adhikari-led government’s May 13 notice on ‘Animal Slaughter Guidelines’.
The notice had made it mandatory to obtain a fit-for-slaughter certificate before slaughtering bulls, bullocks, cows, calves, buffaloes, buffalo calves and castrated buffaloes. It further barred public slaughter of these animals and said officials carrying out inspections to enforce the order should not face any obstruction.
“As many as 37 per cent Muslims eat beef. If they want to ban all this, then first, all slaughter houses should be sealed, which have been given licences to slaughter cows,” IANS quoted Kabir as saying.
He stated that the law must be respected but ‘qurbani’ would still take place. “According to Quran, animals which are legitimate for ‘qurbani’, will be sacrificed,” he said.
He added, “I am warning the BJP government. I am directly telling (Chief Minister) Suvendu Adhikari to not play with fire. If they try to ban ‘qurbani’, it will create problems for them. The Muslim community will not compromise on qurbani under any circumstances.”
Further, he asserted that the central government also exports and imports beef.
“The BJP government is earning thousands of crores as taxes by supplying beef,” he claimed.
In connection with the matter, the Calcutta High Court has also heard a plea challenging the state government’s notification regulating cattle slaughter.
Meanwhile, Humayun Kabir has even urged the West Bengal government to provide a ground for offering ‘namaz’ on Bakrid. He asserted that if arrangements for a ground was not made then “namaz will be offered on the road just like it has been taking place for so many years”.

Israeli security minister who taunted flotilla activists has a record of extreme actions
May 21, 2026

-------------
JERUSALEM: Israel’s far-right national security minister has a long history as a provocateur. This week, Itamar Ben-Gvir sparked global outrage after promoting a video of himself taunting activists from a flotilla to Gaza who were detained by his police force.
Denied entry into the military as a teenager because of his extreme views, Ben-Gvir nevertheless rose to become one of the most powerful people in the country after operating for decades within its far-right fringes.
His tactics drew a backlash this week, as foreign leaders — and even coalition partner Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — condemned his on-camera treatment of some 430 detainees from the Global Sumud Flotilla.
In one clip, Ben-Gvir is seen waving a large Israeli flag over hunched-over detainees whose hands appear to be bound. In another, he taunts a kneeling detainee whose wrists are zip-tied, yelling “Am Yisrael Chai” at him — Hebrew for “The nation of Israel lives.” In another, the detainees can be seen — foreheads to the floor of an outdoor pen — as the Israeli national anthem plays and armed guards encircle them.
The 50-year-old leader of the ultranationalist movement to settle the West Bank, Ben-Gvir transformed himself over the decades from an outlaw into one of Israel’s most influential politicians.
Here is a closer look at Ben-Gvir:
An outlaw youth
Ben-Gvir has been convicted eight times for offenses that include racism and supporting a terrorist organization.
The army banned him from compulsory military service when he was a teen, deeming his views too extreme.
Ben-Gvir gained notoriety in his youth as a follower of the late radical rabbi Meir Kahane. He first became a national figure when he broke a hood ornament off then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s car in 1995.
“We got to his car, and we’ll get to him too,” he said, just weeks before Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist opposed to his peace efforts with the Palestinians.
Two years later, Ben-Gvir took responsibility for orchestrating a campaign of protests, including death threats, that forced Irish singer Sinead O’Connor to cancel a concert for peace in Jerusalem.
Moving to the mainstream
The political rise of Ben-Gvir was the culmination of years of efforts by the media-savvy lawmaker to gain legitimacy. But it also reflected a rightward shift in the Israeli electorate that brought his religious, ultranationalist ideology into the mainstream and diminished hopes for Palestinian independence.
Ben-Gvir is trained as a lawyer and gained recognition as a successful defense attorney for extremist Jews accused of violence against Palestinians.
With a quick wit and cheerful demeanor, Ben-Gvir also became a popular fixture in the media, paving his way to enter politics. He was first elected to parliament in 2021.
Ben-Gvir has called for deporting his political opponents. In an episode in 2022, he brandished a pistol and encouraged police to open fire on Palestinian stone-throwers in a tense Jerusalem neighborhood.
In his Cabinet post, Ben-Gvir oversaw the country’s police force. He used his influence to encourage Netanyahu to press ahead with the war in Gaza and recently boasted that he had blocked past efforts to reach a ceasefire.
As national security minister, he has encouraged police to take a tough line against anti-government protesters.
Controversial minister
Ben-Gvir, who lives in the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba in the West Bank, secured his Cabinet post after 2022 elections that put Netanyahu and his far-right partners, including Ben-Gvir’s Jewish Power party, into power.
“Over the last year I’ve been on a mission to save Israel,” Ben-Gvir told reporters before that election. “Millions of citizens are waiting for a real right-wing government. The time has come to give them one.”
Ben-Gvir has been a magnet of controversy throughout his tenure — encouraging the mass distribution of handguns to Jewish citizens, backing Netanyahu’s contentious attempt to overhaul the country’s legal system and frequently lashing out at US leaders for perceived slights against Israel.
He oversees the nation’s police force, prison service and border police units that operate in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
During the war in Gaza, which began after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack, Ben-Gvir repeatedly advocated against the entry of humanitarian aid into the territory, even as experts warned of brewing famine.
In July 2025, he was one of two Israeli ministers sanctioned by Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway for allegedly “inciting extremist violence” against Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. T he Netherlands has banned Ben-Gvir from entering the country.
He recently celebrated in Israel’s parliament after the body approved the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of murdering Israelis, a bill he spearheaded.
Resignation and return to Netanyahu’s cabinet
Ben-Gvir temporarily resigned from Netanyahu’s Cabinet last year to express his disapproval of the Gaza ceasefire deal.
That ceasefire ran from Jan. 19 to March 1. Ben-Gvir’s resignation did not stop the ceasefire, but it did weaken Netanyahu’s governing coalition.
Ben-Gvir rejoined the Cabinet when Israel ended the ceasefire and returned to active combat in Gaza in March 2025. He remained in Netanyahu’s Cabinet through the current Gaza ceasefire.

Two Muslim clerics arrested in Russia amid confusing, unconfirmed reports of wider crackdown
May 22, 2026

Rail Asainov
Council of Muftis of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia
----------
The first to report the detentions was Orkhan Gasanzade, a blogger who describes himself as a political scientist and international relations analyst. He wrote about it on May 19 in his Telegram channel, which has 700 subscribers. According to his account:
In Saransk, Rail Asainov and five active members of the Muslim community of Mordovia were detained
In Moscow, the imam of a mosque in Yuzhnoye Butovo and former Mufti of Karelia, Wisam Ali Bardwil
In St. Petersburg, Muslim preacher Muhammad Henni, who in 2007 was accused of inciting interfaith hatred
In Saratov, the deputy mufti of the Saratov region, a native of Palestine named Nidal al-Hikh, who in 2019 received a written warning from Russia’s Federal Security Service about the “inadmissibility of treason against the state”
The information was later amplified by Dmitry Steshin, a “war correspondent” and staffer at the pro-Kremlin Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda, and by Ruslan Ostashko, host of the television program “Vremya Pokazhet” on Channel One. Ostashko claimed that the detained representatives of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims “turned out to be connected to the organization “Muslim Brotherhood” and foreign structures.” That claim has not been confirmed.
The propaganda television network Tsargrad reported that its sources confirmed detentions in Mordovia and North Ossetia — no other outlet reported anything about North Ossetia. Religious scholar Roman Silantyev told the network that the security services were working with associates of the head of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims, Ravil Gainutdin. The Telegram channel Rybar, which is close to Russia’s Defense Ministry, also reported that those detained were connected to Gainutdin’s circle.
The following day, May 20, some of the detentions were confirmed. The Tagansky District Court of Moscow reported that it had placed Wisam Ali Bardwil under administrative arrest for 15 days for disobeying police. According to the Interior Ministry, on the evening of May 14 at Sheremetyevo Airport, Bardwil refused to show his passport to police officers and attempted to flee, and when placed in a police vehicle, “actively resisted.”
The deputy mufti of Mordovia, Rashit Abdrashitov, confirmed that Mufti Rail Asainov had been detained in connection with a bribery case. Investigators believe Asainov offered a bribe to the head of the master’s program “Islamic Economics and Finance” at Mordovia State University “so that students in the program could pass their exams.” A representative of the muftiate said that “some kind of misunderstanding occurred” and denied any bribes were involved.
Law enforcement agencies had previously taken notice of representatives of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims. In August 2025, the Moscow City Court added to the list of extremist materials the encyclopedic dictionary “Islam in the North Caucasus,” published by the Medina publishing house under the editorship of the deputy chairman of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims, Damir Mukhetdinov. The administration said at the time that the articles “Wahhabis of the North Caucasus” and “History of Islam in Chechnya” mentioned individuals involved in terrorist activity.
In 2024, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia drew criticism after it adopted a fatwa permitting religious polygamy. Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office warned the organization that the decision was unlawful, after which the Spiritual Administration of Muslims withdrew the fatwa.

CAIR-SFBA OP-ED: Before the San Diego mosque shooting, anti-Muslim hatred was already out of control – San Franscico Chronicle
May 21, 2026

We do not need to wait for a final report to recognize the climate around American Muslims. When people with power spend months portraying Muslims, mosques, Muslim schools and Muslim civic organizations as threats, hate becomes more dangerous because it starts to sound reasonable.
After the San Diego shooting, there were statements, condemnations, prayers and calls for unity. Those things matter. Communities under attack deserve to know their pain is seen. But statements after violence are not enough.
Members of the House should leave the Sharia-Free America Caucus. Party leaders should refuse to legitimize hearings built on anti-Muslim fearmongering. Local officials should meet with Muslim communities before tragedy strikes, not only after.
Lorrie Adam is communications manager at the San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, working to amplify Muslim voices on civil rights, immigration and free speech issues.

No plan to rename Nigeria, scrap Sharia law, says Presidency
by Bolaji Ogundele, Abuja
May 22, 2026
The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to initiate constitutional amendments for the renaming of Nigeria to “United States of Nigeria.”
It also dismissed viral reports of a plan by the President to abolish Sharia law in the North.
The Presidency described the report as a deliberate attempt by some political actors to create division, trigger instability and inflame tensions ahead of the 2027 general election.
The denials and assurances are contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has ‘’no plans whatsoever to sponsor any proposed legislation code-named ‘Project True Federation.”
A part of the statement reads: “The Presidency wishes to inform Nigerians and state clearly that there is no truth to the viral fake story claiming that President Bola Tinubu seeks to carry out constitutional amendments that will change Nigeria’s name to the United States of Nigeria and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region, among other claims.
“The story, which cited anonymous sources, is part of the dubious plot by some desperate politicians to create disaffection in our country, stir up a political crisis, and heat the polity ahead of the general elections.”
The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the report entirely, describing those behind it as “agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder.”
It further noted that President Tinubu remained focused on implementing and deepening his administration’s economic reforms and delivering what it described as tangible benefits to Nigerians.
The Presidency advised Nigerians to exercise caution over fake and divisive reports, particularly as political activities and campaigns gather momentum ahead of the general election.

Malaysia’s BRICS role to boost global economic standing
22 May 2026
Malaysia’s involvement in BRICS can strengthen its global economic position and reduce reliance on the traditional financial system, says the foreign minister.
SEREMBAN: Malaysia’s participation in BRICS is seen as having the potential to strengthen the country’s position in global economic competition, as well as reduce dependence on the traditional financial system dominated by major powers, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He said the formation of the bloc aims to ensure that countries of the Global South are not continually sidelined, noting that BRICS accounts for about 30% of global gross domestic product (GDP) and represents a significant share of the world’s population.
“Our agenda is to ensure that BRICS countries are able to enhance and maximise their capabilities so that they are not left behind, especially in the post-COVID-19 period.
“Furthermore, many countries are burdened with debt, so I believe the global financial system also needs to be reviewed. We no longer want to be overly dependent on a single system,” he told reporters after launching the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Sendayan athletics championship here today.
Mohamad, who is also Rembau MP and Rantau assemblyman, said Malaysia is now expanding the use of local currencies in trade with neighbouring countries, including ASEAN members, to reduce reliance on third-party currencies.
He said, at the same time, efforts are being strengthened to boost trade among member countries and reinforce their respective currencies through regional economic cooperation.
“This is why the ringgit is strengthening, as the country’s trade volume has increased significantly. In fact, in the first quarter of this year alone, Malaysia’s total trade exceeded RM1 trillion.
“Malaysia is a trading nation. Any effort to enhance national trade must be carried out in an orderly manner. We do not want to be overly exposed to the use of foreign currencies; it is better for us to trade using our own currencies and through our respective central banks,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mohamad said Malaysia can play an important role in BRICS given its position as an ASEAN member and an active trading nation at the international level.
He said Malaysia can leverage the principles of multilateralism shared by BRICS and ASEAN to strengthen governance and enhance investor confidence in the country.
He added that Malaysia continues to be a preferred destination for foreign investors due to its clear, consistent and principled foreign policy, including its commitment to neutrality and its firm stance against human rights violations.

Bangladesh Govt wants Hasina back through legal procedure
22 MAY 2026
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday said the government wants to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh through legal procedures and existing extradition mechanisms.
“We want Sheikh Hasina back through legal procedure. Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and under the existing extradition treaty, a formal request has been made for her return so that she can face the cases filed in Bangladesh,” he said at a press briefing at the ministry’s conference room in the Secretariat.
Responding to another question on India’s Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens, Salahuddin said those were entirely India’s internal matters.
“India’s CAA or Assam’s NRC are their own legal and administrative matters concerning their citizens. There is no scope for Bangladesh to comment on those issues,” he said.
The minister, however, said Border Guard Bangladesh remains on high alert along the border to prevent any kind of illegal infiltration or push-in.

First Friday after Bhojshala ruling: ‘Maha aarti’ by Hindu groups, Muslims pray at home
Anand Mohan J
May 22, 2026
Under the watch of nearly 1,800 security personnel deployed across Dhar, the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex witnessed its first ‘maha aarti’ by Hindu groups, while Muslims who say their right to offer namaaz at the structure still stands chose to offer prayers in the confines of their homes as a sign of protest.
Barricades ringed the approach roads to the complex from early morning Friday, while RAF, QRF and STF personnel patrolled sensitive areas across the town. Police conducted flag marches through Dhar Thursday night ahead of the prayers and ceremonies, with officers monitoring social media and maintaining additional pickets in Muslim-majority localities. The Maha aarti comes after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has granted the Hindus unrestricted access to the monument at the Bhojshala complex in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh for worship and other purposes, police said.
Dhar Superintendent of Police said the administration would permit only those rituals allowed under the Madhya Pradesh High Court order.
“Only puja that has been permitted following the orders and directions of the honourable High Court will be conducted here. Apart from this, we have made adequate security arrangements within the premises, around the area, and across the entire city,” Sharma said. He added that discussions had been held with community representatives and that all sides had agreed to follow the court’s directions.
The atmosphere inside the complex sharply contrasted with the tension outside. Hindu devotees queued barefoot beneath the carved stone arches of the ASI-protected monument, reciting Hanuman Chalisa and offering prayers to Goddess Saraswati, whom they refer to as “Ma Vagdevi”.
Hindu organisations described Friday’s ceremony as historically significant, claiming it was the first Friday ‘maha aarti’ held at Bhojshala in 721 years. The Bhoj Utsav Samiti had earlier announced that devotees would take out a procession and conduct a “Vagdevi Maha Aarti” after the High Court ruling altered the religious status of the site.
Until the Madhya Pradesh High Court judgment on May 15, worship at the monument operated under a 2003 ASI arrangement that allowed Hindus to offer prayers on Tuesdays and Basant Panchami, while Muslims offered namaz on Fridays. The arrangement had often led to tension when Basant Panchami coincided with Friday prayers.
The high court, however, held last week that the religious character of the disputed structure was that of Bhojshala — a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. The court also said the site remained a protected monument whose preservation was the constitutional responsibility of the state.
Inside the complex on Friday, petitioner offered prayers and called the verdict part of a wider resurgence of Hindu assertion.
“Today, with the resurgence of Hindus, we are winning the fight to reclaim symbols of Hindu faith and pride,” Tiwari said. Referring to the legal challenge mounted by the Muslim side, he added that the matter could not be considered fully settled until the Supreme Court pronounced its final verdict.
Tiwari also demanded unrestricted access for Hindu devotees to the site, saying entry fees should no longer be charged now that Bhojshala had been declared a temple.
The ruling has also triggered fresh demands from Hindu litigants over the physical structure of the monument. The petitioner, associated with the Hindu Front for Justice, has written to the Archaeological Survey of India seeking the immediate opening of a locked room in the south-eastern section of the complex, claiming it formed part of the original temple structure.
In his application, Goyal also demanded the removal of what he termed “unauthorised Islamic symbols” from the premises in view of the High Court ruling.
Even as Hindu groups celebrated the verdict, Muslim petitioners announced symbolic protests against the order while emphasising they would remain within constitutional limits.
Maulana Kamal Welfare Society president Abdul Samad, one of the petitioners from the Muslim side, said members of the community would offer namaz inside their homes and courtyards instead of gathering at the complex. He said Muslims would wear black bands, shut shops and upload photographs and videos of prayers on social media to protest what they viewed as the loss of a mosque.
“We want to send this message that our mosques are being snatched from us,” Samad said. “The Constitution guarantees us the right to worship. We will follow the Constitution and not play with other people’s religious sentiments.”
The protests came as the Muslim side formally moved the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict. One Qazi Moinuddin has filed an appeal challenging the May 15 judgment that declared the religious character of the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex to be that of a Hindu temple.
Friday’s developments marked the latest chapter in a dispute that has shaped communal and political mobilisation in Dhar for decades. Earlier this week, Hindu groups had celebrated the court verdict with havans, Hanuman Chalisa recitations and fireworks at the site. On Thursday night, police carried out large-scale flag marches through the city in an attempt to project readiness and reassure residents amid fears of unrest.
By Friday evening, the city remained tense but calm, with security forces continuing deployment across sensitive zones as both sides prepared for what is expected to be a prolonged legal battle before the Supreme Court.

'Quran mandates qurbani': AJUP chief Humayun Kabir stirs row after Bengal cattle slaughter curb
May 22, 2026
NEW DELHI: “Cow slaughter will also be done,” AJUP chief and West Bengal MLA Humayun Kabir said, triggering a fresh political controversy as he asserted that the Quran mandates qurbani and insisted that ritual sacrifice of animals would continue despite the state government’s recent restrictions on animal slaughter ahead of Eid.
Stating that ritual sacrifice “will happen at any cost”, Kabir accused the administration of interfering in religious practices.
His remarks drew sharp reactions from the BJP, which maintained that the issue was about enforcing the law and preventing illegal cow slaughter, rather than targeting any community.
“We respect the law. But qurbani will happen. Whatever is written in the Quran will happen. I want to tell Suvendu Adhikari directly not to play with fire. It may prove dangerous for you. The Muslim community will not compromise on qurbani,” Kabir said on Thursday.
The AJUP chief openly challenged the West Bengal government’s recent public notice issued under the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950.
“The government can make a rule asking Muslims not to eat beef, but ritual sacrifice (qurbani) will continue. We won't listen to any objections,” he said.
Calling it a centuries-old tradition, Kabir added, “It's a tradition that has been going on for 1400 years and will continue as long as the world exists.”
“The sacrifice of cows, goats and camels will continue,” Kabir added.
Kabir also expressed resentment over restrictions on offering prayers on roads and demanded adequate spaces for Eid congregations. “If arrangements are not made, then pujas on roads should not be allowed either,” he added.
BJP defends slaughter regulations
Reacting to Kabir’s remarks, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya said the issue was about enforcing the law and preventing illegal activities.
“Illegal slaughterhouses will not be allowed to operate,” Bhattacharya said, according to news agency PTI. He added that the BJP does not interfere with individual food preferences but opposes public slaughter of cows.
West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh claimed that “cow slaughter is not associated with any religion”.
“There are no cows where Islam originates from. Cow slaughter used to be done here to cause pain to the Hindu community", he added.
As per news agency ANI, BJP Telangana president N Ramchander Rao also backed stricter implementation of anti-cow slaughter laws in West Bengal and accused some people of trying to create communal divisions through the issue.
“Some people, who are trying to create a rift between the two communities by provoking, purposefully take cows for slaughtering. Some people like Humayun Kabir in Bengal try to make this an issue. Suvendu Adhikari trying to stop cow slaughter is a welcome step. Other states should follow it”, he said.
Debate over cow slaughter intensifies
Earlier, Furfura Sharif Pirzada Toha Siddiqui questioned what he described as “double standards” on beef-related policies, asking why exports were permitted while restrictions were imposed domestically.
"What the law says needs to be followed. But the law should be the same for everyone. No cow slaughter? Okay, we will accept that. But in India, beef is at number two [referring to exports]. A common man offers a sacrifice, that's not allowed. And slaughtering the cows of the country and sending them abroad is permissible? Is that okay?" Siddiqui questioned.
"Look at every place and other states in India, beef is sold there. So what is it? It's allowed there, but not here? The law should be one for India", he further said.
At the same time, former Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case plaintiff Iqbal Ansari urged Muslims to respect cows and called for the animal to be declared India’s national animal.
“The cow should not be sacrificed (kurbaani) at all. It is worshipped in Hinduism,” Ansari said, as quoted by ANI.
"We are Indian Muslims, and the cow is called 'Gaumata', and Muslims should respect cows. The government should declare it the national animal," Ansari added.
High Court refuses to stay Bengal order
The controversy comes after the Calcutta High Court on Thursday refused to stay the West Bengal government’s order reiterating a ban on slaughter of cattle or buffaloes without a mandatory fitness certificate ahead of Eid-ul-Zuha.
The court observed that “the sacrifice of a cow is no part of the festival of Id-Uz-Zuha and is not a religious requirement under Islam”, citing earlier Supreme Court observations.
The state government’s May 13 notification stated that animal slaughter in open public places would be strictly prohibited and allowed only at authorised facilities.
Violations under the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950, could attract up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of Rs 1,000, or both.

Bengal Muslims deleted in SIR stare at uncertainty amid deport fear under new regime
Sanjay Mandal, Debraj Mitra
22.05.26
The threat of detention and deportation has triggered a fresh wave of fear and, in some cases, desperation, among many Muslim families whose names were deleted from the electoral rolls.
Many of them said on Thursday that despite having all documents, their names were deleted from the rolls, and there was no guarantee that the same documents would be accepted to legitimise them when the government searches for illegal immigrants.
On Wednesday, chief minister Suvendu Adhikari declared his government would start detecting illegal Bangladeshis, detaining them and handing them over to the BSF to be deported.
“The Indian government had sent an order on May 14, 2025, asking the Bengal government to identify Bangladeshi immigrants and hand them over to the BSF for deportation. But the previous government did not act,” Suvendu said at an event in Nabanna to hand over land to fence the Bangladesh border. “We will implement the order from today, arresting all such illegal immigrants and handing them over to the BSF….”
According to the chief minister, immigrants who had crossed over to India before December 31, 2024, and were eligible to apply for citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, would not be arrested. Muslims are outside the purview of the Act.
Metro spoke to Muslims whose names were deleted from the electoral rolls about how they feel. None of them is being named.
House help
From southern fringes of Calcutta
Age: 35
Her name did not figure on the rolls published on February 28.
“I was born in Calcutta and have no connection with Bangladesh. My ancestors are from Bengal. First, when my name was deleted, my concern was that I would be denied government benefits. But now, my fear is much deeper. Can I be thrown out of my own country?” she said.
She works for 12 hours at a house in Calcutta. “When my name was deleted, I went to a lot of people seeking help. I have submitted Form 6 (to enrol as a new voter), but nothing has happened. To get my name back, I was having to miss work for days, and I was afraid that I would lose my job. So, I gave up running around to get my name reinstated.”
“Now, I am desperate. My children are in school, and I have to look after them. I travel by train every day to work for 12 hours. I don’t have the time or energy to think what will happen,” she said.

Age: 61
He possesses certificates, tracing back his roots more than 300 years.
“I gave all the documents. My name was still deleted. There is no guarantee it will not happen again. I am as Indian as anyone. My neighbours know that. But these documents have failed to prove my Indian-ness once before. There is no assurance of their success this time,” he said.
“I never imagined that words like detect, detain and deport would become part of the everyday conversation in Bengal,” said the man.
“I have appealed to the tribunal but am yet toreceive a notice on a hearing,” he said.
His ancestral house is at Jangipara in Serampore. He was a voter in Jangiparauntil he shifted to Konnagar in 2002. Since then, he hasvoted in Konnagar, which is part of the Uttarpara Assembly seat.
His wife and son were also flagged for logical discrepancies, and all three were summoned for hearings. His son, who has a passport, was cleared. But the man and his wife were placed under adjudication.
Eventually, only the man was deleted from the rolls.

The woman is now speaking to a lawyer about how to get her name back on the rolls. Otherwise, she fears “serious trouble”.
Her name was under adjudication, but it did not figure in the supplementary lists that were published.
“I have my passport, Aadhaar and PAN cards as well as property documents. I was born in my house in Calcutta, where my father was born too. I was a voter since 2016 and have no connection with Bangladesh,” she said.
“The BLO had confused me by asking me to wait. Now, I cannot appeal to the tribunal. I am consulting a lawyer on what could be done,” she said.
Recently, she bought aflat in Calcutta.
“My husband and family are here. I have my marriage certificate too. But those did not help when I submitted the documents for the hearing. Now, if there is a census, will they consider those documents?” she asked.
Salesperson
Murshidabad
Age: 32
A single mother in Murshidabad, she vowed to fight to get her name restored.
“Why wouldn’t I? It is my right to vote in my country. The government can do whatever it wants with illegal infiltrators, from Bangladesh, Pakistan or any other place. But why target us? We may be poor, but we are Indians,” said the woman who lives in Bhagabangola and works at a retail chain’s outlet inBehrampore.
She travels by train between home and work. She has a 14-year-old son. Her husband passed away six years ago.
The woman has four siblings — three sisters and a brother. All of them were mapped to the same father, and all of them received hearing notices. Only the woman and her eldest sister were deleted.
“I have filed an online appeal with the tribunal. But I have not received anycommunication from them,” she said.
From Wednesday evening, “deportation” and “detention camp” have been the topic of discussion in almost every village in Murshidabad, including the one in which the woman lives with her son. Murshidabad is a border district which recorded the highest number of deletions in the state.

After CM’s stance on namaz, clerics say Bakrid prayers will be offered at mosques, Eidgahs
May 22, 2026
Lucknow: In wake of chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive that govt won’t allow offering namaz in public places and Muslims can offer prayers in shifts if mosques are cramped for space, several Muslim clerics in UP have said that Bakrid namaz would be offered inside mosques and Eidgahs as in previous years, and, if required, arrangements could be made for multiple prayer shifts.
The CM had clarified his govt’s stance at an event in Lucknow earlier this week.
He had suggested that if there was a large gathering, prayers could be offered in shifts. “If offering namaz is essential to you, do so in shifts. We will not stop you from praying. However, it will not be permitted on the roads,” he had said.
Senior executive member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, said extensive preparations were being made in mosques and Eidgahs as every year for Bakrid which will be celebrated on May 28.
The cleric said arrangements for offering namaz in multiple shifts could be made if needed, provided each congregation had a separate imam.
Mahali said Muslims had been offering prayers inside mosques and Eidgahs for years and have always followed law and order because namaz was not only an act of worship, but it also taught discipline. By avoiding prayers on roads for years, Muslims had demonstrated that they were a disciplined and civilised community, he added.
On the CM’s directive, Mahali said, “We expect govt to apply the same rules to all communities.”
General secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, Maulana Yasoob Abbas, said arrangements for Eid prayers at Shia mosques are being made in the same manner as every year.
However, he clarified that there was no provision for multiple shifts in Shia congregational prayers.
“This is about worship, and only one form of worship should not be targeted. Rules should apply equally to all. Any procession or religious activity that disrupts traffic should be stopped,” he added.
Meanwhile, the leading clerics of the Barelvi sect backed the CM saying that prayers should be offered only at clean and peaceful places where there is no disturbance.
The national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, said Islam strictly instructs that there should be no obstruction between a worshipper and Allah while offering namaz.
The imam of the Jama Masjid in Bareilly, Maulana Khursheed, said the CM did not say anything wrong by opposing prayers on roads. The directive had been followed earlier as well and would continue to be followed in future, he said.
The principal of the Madrasa Islamia Arabia Jama Masjid in Amroha, Mufti Syed Mohammad Affan Mansoorpuri, said that according to Islamic principles, offering namaz on roads or similar public places was not considered appropriate.
Prayers should not be offered anywhere without obtaining the necessary permission, and Muslims were aware of this and largely followed the norm, he said.
However, Mansoorpuri said that while Muslims follow govt directives on offering prayers, CM’s remarks were aimed at appeasing the majority community.
Moradabad’s city imam Hakim Maulana Masoom Ali Azad backed the chief minister and said that Muslims had been offering Eid prayers in mosques and Eidgahs for a long time.

Cow slaughter not part of Eid or Islam: Calcutta HC
May 22, 2026
KOLKATA: Cow sacrifice is neither a part of Eid-uz-Zuha nor a religious requirement under Islam, Calcutta HC said on Thursday while refusing to quash the Bengal govt's order regulating cattle slaughter ahead of the festival or grant interim relief based on a batch of PILs challenging the administration's directive.
The division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen asked the state to consider within 24 hours whether an exemption could be granted under the same 1950 law cited in the order, pointing out the festival falls on May 27-28. The BJP govt's May 13 order mentions the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950, and a 2018 HC order, both of which mandate the prohibition of cow and buffalo slaughter unless a certificate is obtained that the animal "is fit for slaughter."
HC asked the state to examine if Article 12 of the 1950 Act, which empowers govt to allow slaughter of otherwise restricted animals for religious, medicinal or research purposes, could be invoked in this case. The judges also directed the state to consider incorporating a condition that animal slaughter could not take place in open public places.
On the constitutionality of the 1950 Act, challenged in several of the PILs, senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee argued the law was meant only for Kolkata and other municipalities rather than the entire state. The bench declined to intervene on this.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation's counsel Nilotpal Chatterjee said the civic body had slaughterhouses with the necessary infrastructure and designated officials to issue fit-for-slaughter certificates. HC said the onus was on the state to examine whether a proper mechanism exists for issuing such certificates. "If any deficiency is found by the state, we hope and trust that the same shall be cured at the earliest."

136 years, 3 chief ministers, and one unmoved mosque: Shielded by CPM, TMC, mosque at Kolkata airport may now be relocated
May 22, 2026
KOLKATA: Fresh efforts to shift the mosque next to the secondary runway at Kolkata airport have gained momentum following the change in the state govt.
An inspection of the mosque was carried out on Tuesday, followed by a meeting between the state administration and mosque representatives on Wednesday to press for the relocation of the mosque that is situated deep inside the airport operational area.
A team comprising officials from the district administration and Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Tuesday visited the 136-year-old Gouripur Jame Masjid, also known as Bankra mosque, that was once situated in a vast barren land but now finds itself deep inside the airport.
At the meeting that followed at the North 24 Parganas DM's office on Wednesday, airport officials explained the need to shift the mosque, citing safety, security concerns and flight operation constraints. The mosque representatives, led by former MLA Siddiqullah Chowdhury, have referred the authorities to Muslim umbrella organisations, stating that they are incapable of deciding on the issue.
"The presence of this mosque inside the airport premises has been an issue of contention for long, and time and again we have highlighted problems in flight operations because of it. We had another round of discussion on Wednesday and are now awaiting a positive response," said airport director Vikram Singh.
State govt aligns with Centre, plan to shift mosque out of airport gets renewed push
The modest mosque sits 165 m north of the secondary runway and around 150 m inside the boundary wall and has been a bone of contention for over three decades. The minimum distance required for any building from the runway is 240 m. Past efforts by the civil aviation ministry were shot down by the Jyoti Basu, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and Mamata Banerjee govts. But with BJP now in office at the Centre as well as the state, airport officials are hopeful of a positive outcome. Current CM Suvendu Adhikari has in recent times flagged concerns about the presence of the mosque in the airport operational area and called for its relocation.
"Since the mosque sits within the approach path of flights, the secondary runway's touchdown point was shifted southward by 88 m. While the remaining 2,832 m of runway are adequate for narrow-body aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, it is not enough to operate wide-body aircraft like B787 and A330. The mosque is also a potential safety hazard during emergency landings," an airport official said.
Operating flights when the primary runway isn't available on foggy winter days is also a challenge. The 3,633-m primary runway is equipped with advanced instrument landing systems that allow flight operations in low visibility, but it is not possible to install the equipment on the secondary runway due to the mosque's presence.
At present, around 10-25 devotees offer namaz at the mosque five times- a- day, with CISF frisking them at the gate on Jessore Road before they are bussed to the mosque and back. During Friday prayers, the devotee count goes up to around 80.
"Only locals from Bankra pray at the mosque. Others are not allowed. We have always cooperated with the authorities and have not objected to being frisked or producing ID cards to enter the sensitive area. But taking a decision on shifting the mosque is beyond our purview. We do not want to get into a confrontation with authorities and have told them that they speak to Madrasa Darul Uloom Deoband, Muslim Personal Law Board and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind to arrive at a decision," said mosque committee member Abul Kalam.

West Bengal govt scrapping welfare for imams, purohits opens a larger question
AMANA BEGAM
22 May, 2026
All eyes remain on West Bengal after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power. And one of its first major policy shifts has already triggered intense debate. The state government has decided to discontinue welfare funding for imams and purohits.
The issue has quickly turned into a wider political and social debate—ranging from arguments around the “end of appeasement politics” to questions of welfare misuse, identity politics, and the meaning of secularism itself.
The West Bengal government’s decision has revived India’s oldest and perhaps most uncomfortable political question: What does secularism mean in practice?
For decades, Indian governments across political parties have had a complicated relationship with religion. Unlike the Western idea of secularism—where the state and religion are meant to be separate, distant entities—India’s version has often meant active involvement with all religious communities. Governments subsidised pilgrimages, regulated temples, and introduced welfare schemes for religious clergy.
Some defended such policies in the name of inclusion, welfare, or historical balance reparations. But many saw them as selective appeasement of a vote bank through tokens.
The problem arises when governments start attaching welfare to religious identity. Once the state selectively starts funding clergy, politics naturally enters the picture. What may begin as social support slowly turns into political signalling. One subsidy creates another demand. State support for one community leads another to ask why they don’t get the same benefits. Welfare thus turns into a game of religious balancing. India has seen the pattern unfold many times before. It is a dangerous direction for a republic built on equal citizenship.
A step in the right direction
The Mamata Banerjee government frequently faced accusations of “minority appeasement”, especially around its support schemes for imams.
The scheme was launched in 2012, when the government announced a monthly honorarium for imams across West Bengal. Registered imams were given Rs 2,500 per month, with the argument that many religious leaders came from economically weaker backgrounds. Soon after, a similar assistance programme was also extended to muezzins through the minority welfare department.
Then in 2020, the state government introduced a similar allowance for Hindu priests. The move was widely seen as a response to the criticism that only Muslim religious figures were receiving state support. Under this scheme, registered purohits were initially given around Rs 1,000 per month, which was later revised to Rs 2,000 ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
But why should governments fund religious functionaries at all? Why should the state be involved in religion?
A secular democratic state cannot permanently sustain the role of religious patron without undermining its own neutrality. Whether the beneficiaries are imams, purohits, pastors, monks, or any other clergy, the principle remains the same. Public funds are meant to serve citizens as citizens—not as members of religious constituencies.
This is not an argument against religion. Nor is it about ignoring the economic struggles of people working in religious institutions. Many imams and priests, especially in rural areas, live very modest lives and often survive on unstable donations. Their financial difficulties are real and deserve empathy.
But that support should come through broader welfare systems based on economic need rather than religion-specific state patronage.
Religion already shapes a lot of political discourse in India. That is why this decision in West Bengal feels like a step in the right direction. It could also mean that political parties are slowly realising that openly religion-linked welfare schemes are becoming harder to justify now.
More importantly, voters themselves seem to be changing. Especially among younger and urban Indians, there is a growing focus on issues such as jobs, infrastructure, inflation, healthcare, and education rather than symbolic religious politics.
What does secularism mean for India?
The West Bengal government’s policy shift should not become an excuse for selective outrage from either side. Celebrating the removal of funding for imams while remaining silent about state support toward other religious institutions would be a dishonest position. Either the state supports all religious groups equally, or it steps away from this space altogether.
The second option is much healthier for democracy.
India’s secularism has always been complicated because of the country’s diversity and historical realities. In the past, a complete separation between religion and the state may not have seemed possible.
But India must now rethink what secularism means.
A secular democracy does not become anti-religion by stepping away from religious patronage. If anything, it allows both governance and faith to exist in their own space without either invading the other.
And perhaps that is the real significance of the policy shift in West Bengal. It is not just the ending of one welfare scheme, but the beginning of a larger conversation India has avoided for a long time.

MCOCA invoked against cattle smuggling amid Eid preparations
May 22, 2026
MUMBAI: In a move to curb illegal cattle trade and unauthorised slaughterhouses, the Maharashtra government has directed the authorities to invoke the provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against individuals, gangs or organisations involved in cattle-smuggling.
“The concerned police machinery shall conduct investigations in accordance with prevailing laws and take appropriate action under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act against individuals, gangs or organisations repeatedly involved in organised cattle smuggling in violation of existing laws and regulations,” states the circular issued on Thursday.
At a time when preparations for Eid-ul-Adha are underway, when Muslims traditionally perform animal sacrifice or qurbani, the timing of the circular issued by the home department appears suspect to certain community leaders. “Given the timing, it appears that the government is looking to create more trouble for the Muslim community ahead of the festival,” said Maulana Mehmood Dariyabadi, Islamic scholar and founding member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
However, the same circular permits temporary slaughterhouses in Mumbai as is the norm during Eid. These must be set up, it says, through written permission and subject to conditions such as proper biomedical waste management, maintenance of public health and hygiene.
The state government said it had issued the circular after receiving representations from various organisations seeking appropriate action against cattle smuggling, illegal transportation of bovine animals and unauthorised slaughterhouses. The circular directs all local bodies in both urban and rural areas to identify unauthorised slaughterhouses operating within their jurisdictions and take action. In another key directive, the police have been instructed to act promptly on complaints received via the 112 helpline related to cattle smuggling, illegal transportation and unauthorised slaughterhouses.
The home department has also ordered all district collectors in border districts to set up joint check posts at entry points from neighbouring states. “These check posts shall include officials and staff from the police department, transport offices, urban and rural local self-government bodies, and animal husbandry offices,” the circular states.
In addition, all Superintendent of Police offices in rural areas, police commissionerates in urban areas, the animal husbandry commissionerate and the transport commissionerate have been directed to appoint independent nodal officers, with contact details to be shared with all concerned departments and the public. “All concerned departments in the state shall constitute joint flying squads to take action against illegal cattle transportation and unauthorised slaughterhouses,” the circular notes.

Muslim side in SC, challenges high court's Bhojshala order
May 22, 2026
NEW DELHI: The Muslim side Thursday moved SC challenging a Madhya Pradesh HC order which said the disputed Bhojshala complex was a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.
The Hindu community considers Bhojshala a temple dedicated to Saraswati, while the Muslim side calls the 11th-century monument the Kamal Maula Mosque.
The disputed complex is protected by ASI. The appeal filed by the mosque's caretaker, Qazi Moinuddin, has challenged HC's order on May 15.
Meanwhile, for the first time in 23 years, namaz will not be offered at Bhojshala, effectively ending the long-standing arrangement that had divided the site for worship between two communities. Amid a undercurrent of tension, the administration is leaving nothing to chance, and heavy security has been deployed across the city.
The arrangement dated back to a 2003 ASI order, which allotted Tuesdays to Hindus for prayers and Fridays to Muslims for namaz, at the complex. HC struck down that order, while directing govt to consider applications for allotting land elsewhere for the construction of a mosque.
Hindu organisations have been celebrating the ruling for nearly a week and plan to mark this Friday with significant fanfare. With communal tensions simmering, Dhar district collector Rajiv Ranjan Meena Wednesday called a peace meeting and issued a firm advisory.
MP govt has announced that Bhojshala will be developed on the lines of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Friday mosque prayers in shifts to avoid crowding, toe govt line
May 21, 2026
Kolkata: In the wake of the newly elected BJP govt's emphasis on keeping carriageways clear during religious gatherings, mosques across Kolkata will begin holding prayers in two separate jamats, or shifts, with staggered timings from this week (Friday) to ensure worshippers can offer prayers within the mosque premises and prevent spillover on to roads.
The mosques said arrangements have been made in coordination with local police stations and community members to manage crowds during Friday prayers. Although no formal govt notification has been issued, several mosque committees said local police stations have orally conveyed instructions requesting that roads and major crossings remain free of congestion during prayer hours.
"We will have Friday prayers in two separate jamats, scheduled at 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., to ensure that all worshippers are able to offer prayers comfortably within the mosque premises. The decision has been taken to avoid overcrowding and to ensure that no congregation spills onto public roads or thoroughfares. We appeal to everyone to cooperate with the authorities," said Nasser Ebrahim, a trustee of the Nakhoda Mosque in Zakaria Street.
Several mosques in the Rajabazar and Narkeldanga areas are also expected to conduct prayers in two shifts. "There are several mosques in the Rajabazar and Narkeldanga areas, with Jama Masjid Rajabazar among the largest, attracting a significant number of worshippers every Friday. In view of the situation, arrangements have been made to hold prayers in two separate shifts in Jama Masjid Rajabazar so that everyone can offer namaz comfortably within the mosque premises without overcrowding," said Umar Awais, convenor of the Citizen Forum for Social Justice.
The Abu Bakar Mosque on Marquis Street will also hold Friday prayers in two shifts. The mosques in several neighbourhoods, including Royd Street, Beniapukur, Kidderpore, Mominpore, Topsia and Park Circus, said worshippers were being encouraged to attend staggered congregations.
Similar arrangements would also be made in neighbouring districts. "We will be conducting Friday prayers in two separate jamaats so that worshippers can offer namaz peacefully. We request everyone to cooperate with the administration and follow the arrangements," said Maulana Rashid Ahmed, imam of Jama Masjid in Shibpur.
Residents and mosque committee members said during the prayers last Friday that many worshippers voluntarily moved to nearby mosques after finding local mosques full. Traffic movement across most parts of the city remained normal during prayer hours, with the main carriageways around the mosques remaining open.

First Gaza flotilla activists arrive in Turkiye after Israel deportation
May 22, 2026
JERUSALEM: Israel said on Thursday it had deported all the foreign activists seized by its forces from a Gaza-bound flotilla, as the first group arrived in Turkiye following global outcry over their treatment in custody.
Hundreds of activists from countries around the world were placed in detention in Israel after they were intercepted at sea Monday while making the latest in a string of attempts to break the blockade of the Palestinian territory.
Turkish foreign ministry sources said 422 activists, including 85 Turkish nationals, were flown from southern Israel on three planes chartered by Ankara.
Those deportation flights were confirmed by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which said several other activists had been deported to their home countries directly.
A first group of arrivals were seen inside the VIP terminal at Istanbul airport, as a crowd of supporters carrying Palestinian flags gathered to welcome them, an AFP correspondent said.
Israeli forces “attacked us. Each of us was beaten, women and men... It’s what Palestinians experience all the time,” said Turkish national Bulal Kitay, after he got off the plane.
Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir sparked widespread condemnation and a diplomatic backlash Wednesday by posting a video showing the detained activists with their hands tied and foreheads on the ground.
Israel’s foreign ministry spokesman, Oren Marmorstein, said Thursday that “all foreign activists from the PR flotilla have been deported from Israel.
“Israel will not permit any breach of the lawful naval blockade on Gaza,” he added.
Upon arrival at Istanbul airport, one of the activists shouted “the Palestinian people are not alone!” as he emerged from the terminal.
“We’ve been tortured, we’ve been beaten, we’ve been arrested in international waters, but we won’t give up. We will return. Palestine will be free from the river to the sea,” he said to cheers from the crowd.
Adalah, the legal center representing the flotilla members, said earlier on Thursday that the majority were “en route for deportation” from Ramon Airport in Israel’s far south.
It said they had been held at Israel’s Ktziot prison, in the Negev Desert near Gaza.
A spokesman for Adalah said activists from Egypt had been transferred to Taba at Egypt’s border with Israel, while those from Jordan had been transferred to Aqaba.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said that two South Korean nationals had also been sent back to their home country and an Israeli citizen had been released in Israel.
‘Inflammatory video’
Around 50 vessels under the Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkiye last week in the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza, after Israeli forces intercepted a previous convoy last month.
The deportations came after footage posted by Ben Gvir, captioned “Welcome to Israel” and showing the minister heckling and waving an Israeli flag among the detained activists, sparked resounding condemnation by governments around the world, from Italy to Spain and Australia to Canada.
He was also criticized at home by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, as well as by US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee.
Italy and Spain have called on the European Union to sanction Ben Gvir, with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez calling the treatment of the activists “unacceptable.”
In Ireland, a leaked letter revealed Prime Minister Micheal Martin urging the EU chief for “further action” against Israel over their treatment, including a ban on settlement goods and suspension “of parts if not all” of the EU’s Association Agreement with Israel.
The United Kingdom announced it had summoned Israel’s most senior diplomat in Britain following “the inflammatory video.”
‘They kicked us’
Adalah’s legal director Suhad Bishara told AFP on Wednesday that the group’s lawyers had given legal counsel to “many” of the activists, though she added others had faced court hearings without legal assistance.
“We know of at least two participants who were hospitalized... both of them were shot by rubber bullets,” Bishara said, adding that others said they feared they had broken ribs.
Alessandro Mantovani, an Italian journalist detained with the flotilla activists and deported before the others, told reporters in Italy on Thursday that he and others were “taken to Ben Gurion airport in handcuffs and with chains on our feet and put on a flight to Athens.”
“They beat us up. They kicked us and punched us and shouted ‘Welcome to Israel’,” he said of his treatment by Israeli security forces.
Israel controls all entry points into Gaza, under blockade since 2007.
Since the start of the Gaza war, sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, the territory has suffered severe shortages of food, medicine and other essential supplies, with Israel at times halting aid deliveries entirely.

Israeli strike kills 2 in south Lebanon: military
May 22, 2026
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military carried out an airstrike in south Lebanon, killing two people it said on Friday were armed and “moving in a suspicious manner” in an area where it is fighting Hezbollah.
Israel and the Iran-backed group have been regularly trading fire in the country’s south despite a ceasefire, which was extended by Israeli and Lebanese authorities last week.
“A short while ago, IDF surveillance identified two armed individuals moving in a suspicious manner hundreds of meters from Israeli territory, in southern Lebanon,” the Israeli military posted on Telegram.
“Following their identification and continuous monitoring by the IDF, the armed individuals were struck and eliminated in an aerial strike,” the post said.
Since a truce began on April 17, Israel has continued to launch strikes, carry out demolitions and issue evacuation orders in south Lebanon, saying it is targeting Hezbollah, which has also kept up attacks.
Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel on March 2 in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes.
Israel responded with a massive series of airstrikes and a ground invasion in the country’s south, where its troops are operating inside an Israeli-declared “yellow line” running around 10 kilometers (six miles) inside Lebanon along the border.
Lebanon’s health ministry said Thursday that Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,089 people since the wider regional war began.
Israel’s military has reported the death of 22 personnel during the fighting.
Last week the fragile temporary truce was extended for 45 days following a third round of direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives in Washington, discussions that Hezbollah staunchly opposes.

Lebanese accuse Israel of wiping their towns off the map
May 22, 2026
BEIRUT: Lebanese mother-of-two Hala Farah is collecting photos and videos to preserve the memory of her hometown which, like many others along the southern border, has been completely destroyed by Israeli forces.
Testimony from residents and officials, as well as satellite images and photographs taken by AFP journalists on both sides of the border, show widespread destruction in dozens of Lebanese towns and villages since the start of the Israel-Hezbollah war on March 2.
Responding to Hezbollah’s attacks, Israel carried out massive airstrikes and launched a ground invasion in the south, which borders Israel and where the Iran-backed movement holds sway.
While a ceasefire began on April 17, the destruction, demolitions and bulldozing in southern areas have only intensified, affecting homes, infrastructure, schools, places of worship and farmland.
Israel’s army, which sometimes issued evacuation warnings ahead of strikes, has repeatedly said its attacks target Hezbollah sites and operatives — not civilians.
But Farah, 33, said everything in her hometown Yarun, less than a kilometer (mile) from Israel, has been destroyed.
“All that’s left are memories and some pictures that we and the neighbors are trying to collect... so that we can tell our children what Yarun was like,” she told AFP.
“I had hoped my daughters would grow up in the family home,” she said, wearing a pin showing her village.
Yarun has found itself on the front line before: satellite images seen by AFP show it had been mostly destroyed by early 2025 following the previous Israel-Hezbollah war, with its Saint George church left with only three walls standing.
Other medium-resolution images, taken earlier this month and reviewed by AFP, show that what had previously been spared is now gone.
Reduced to rubble
Unable to return to the south, some displaced families are sharing the cost of purchasing satellite images — at $140 — to catch a glimpse of their hometowns.
Some post images of their homes on social media, taken before and after their destruction.
Among them is an anti-Hezbollah activist whose grandfather’s three-story home in the city of Nabatieh was wrecked in an Israeli strike.
A veteran writer meanwhile mourned his book collection in the border town of Bint Jbeil.
“Israel is trying to remove all the essential elements of life necessary for return,” said Farah, who learned through satellite imagery that her house in Yarun, a town where both Christians and Muslims lived, was now rubble.
Her voice broke as she scrolled through dozens of photos and videos on her phone.
“What happened during the truce confirms that Israel’s goal is the urbicide of the south, including Yarun,” she said.
Environment Minister Tamara Zein last month also accused Israel of committing an “urbicide” in the area, using a term which means the deliberate destruction of urban areas.
Israel occupied south Lebanon until the year 2000, and Hezbollah has insisted it must retain its arsenal, despite a Lebanese government push to reclaim the monopoly of force.
While the majority of the south is Shia, Farah said Israel’s demolitions in Yarun have included “the church hall, a convent and the Saint George school.”
Around six kilometers (four miles) north of Yarun, satellite images from early April showed no sign of major damage in Bint Jbeil, an ancient hilltop town that had become a Hezbollah bastion.
A month later, the town appeared to have been razed almost entirely, including the stadium where slain Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah delivered his “liberation” speech in 2000 to mark the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
‘Destroy the land’
At Lebanon’s government-linked National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Beirut, research director Chadi Abdallah showed AFP journalists before and after images of Bint Jbeil.
“Most buildings in Bint Jbeil are destroyed,” he said, with most demolitions and detonations occurring since the truce.
“The Israelis are not conducting military or clearing operations; they are entering to destroy the land, the people, and the infrastructure,” he said.
The agriculture ministry estimated this month that Israeli attacks have damaged more than 560 square kilometers of farmland.
“They are trying to erase the memory of the people in this region and to erase its history,” said Abdallah.
According to the CNRS, Israeli attacks since 2023 have destroyed more than 290,000 housing units, 61,000 of them since the start of the latest war.
Among them, some 12,000 units were completely or partially destroyed since the truce began.
Lebanese officials say Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,000 people since Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the Middle East war in support of Iran after Israeli strikes killed the Islamic republic’s supreme leader.
“Lebanon is witnessing such destruction for the first time in its history,” said researcher Hanaa Jaber, who has roots in Bint Jbeil.
More than a million people displaced from the south face an “uprooting... with terrible repercussions,” she said.
‘Life support’
Others, like Imad Bazzi from Bint Jbeil, spoke to AFP about the loss of their life’s work.
“There is a total annihilation of... Bint Jbeil, from residential buildings and water and electricity institutions to the hospital, and even schools and gas stations,” said Bazzi, 60, a municipal councillor and owner of an engineering firm that was destroyed.
“What is happening today is a blatant change of geography. It is systematic destruction.”
Israel, whose soldiers are operating inside a self-declared “yellow line” that runs around 10 kilometers north of the border, says it is protecting its communities from Hezbollah attacks.
Lebanon and Israel began their first direct talks in decades last month in Washington, and Farah, the woman from Yarun, hopes for a positive outcome.
“We hope this will be the last war, because our villages in the south... are currently on life support,” she said.
“We hope the Israelis will withdraw from every inch of our land and let us... create new memories for our children, erasing the echoes of the strikes that still ring in their ears.”

UN council urged to use ‘every means at its disposal’ to press Hamas to disarm
May 21, 2026
UNITED NATIONS: The official overseeing the US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza urged the UN Security Council on Thursday to use “every means at its disposal” to press Hamas to disarm, warning that every act of violence in the Palestinian territory risks “unraveling” the agreement.
Nickolay Mladenov, high representative of the Board of Peace, an international body established by President Donald Trump, said Israel must also uphold its obligations under the October’s ceasefire, pointing to the killings of Palestinians and restrictions on the flow of humanitarian aid.
The choice before Hamas and Israel is either “a deteriorating status quo” or a new beginning for Palestinians now waiting “in desperate conditions,” he said. “There is no third option. There never was, and the people of Gaza should not be made to wait while some pretend that there is.”
Mladenov was expanding on the first report by the Board of Peace, which said the main obstacle to full implementation of the ceasefire remains “Hamas’ refusal to accept verified decommissioning, relinquish coercive control, and permit a genuine civilian transition in Gaza.”
Hamas in a statement criticized the new report and said it ignored Israel’s failure to comply with the terms of the ceasefire.
The Palestinian militant group, which led the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza, has sought to link any demilitarization to Israeli troop pullbacks. Israel’s military has expanded its control of Gaza since the truce took effect and now controls some 60 percent of the territory.
Mladenov, a veteran Bulgarian diplomat, said if Israel and Hamas refuse to accept the roadmap to implement Trump’s peace plan, the Board of Peace will discuss ways to provide humanitarian relief and promote recovery in the territory.
If nothing is done, he said, Gaza will remain divided. with Hamas holding administrative and military control over 2 million Palestinians who can live in less than half of the Gaza Strip and are likely to remain trapped in rubble, needing aid and without hope of reconstruction or a future for their children.
“This is a version of the future that Israelis, Palestinians and the region should all fear and all mobilize to avoid,” Mladenov said.
He said the decommissioning of weapons “will be gradual, sequenced and time-bound against an agreed timetable” — and that weapons from Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups will not be transferred to Israel but to the transitional administration in Gaza.
The roadmap deserves the Security Council’s “clear, consistent and unequivocal support,” he said.
“I ask the council to use every means at its disposal to urge Hamas to accept the roadmap without further delay, and Israel to uphold its obligations under the ceasefire,” Mladenov said. “Diplomacy must continue, cannot be used as an excuse for delay while 2 million people wait in desperate conditions.”

US sanctions 9 over Hezbollah ties, including Lebanese MPs
May 21, 2026
WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday sanctioned nine Hezbollah-linked individuals it accused of “obstructing the peace process in Lebanon,” as Israeli strikes on the southern part of the country continued despite a ceasefire.
“Hezbollah is a terrorist organization and must be fully disarmed,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
“Treasury will continue to take action against officials who have infiltrated the Lebanese government and are enabling Hezbollah to wage its senseless campaign of violence against the Lebanese people and obstruct lasting peace.”
Iran-backed Hezbollah has wide-ranging support in Lebanon, with both an armed and a political wing, including elected members of parliament.
The group has staunchly opposed recent direct peace talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives. Washington and its ally Israel have called for the complete disarmament of the group.
Among those sanctioned on Thursday were Hezbollah MPs Hassan Fadlallah, Ibrahim Al-Moussawi and Hussein Al-Hajj Hassan, and executive council leader Mohamed Abdel-Mottaleb Fanich.
Washington has also sanctioned Mohammad Reza Sheibani, the Iranian ambassador-designate to Lebanon who was declared persona non grata and ordered to leave the country in March.
Others sanctioned on Thursday included Ahmad Asaad Baalbaki and Ali Ahmad Safawi of Hezbollah political ally Amal, and serving Lebanese military officers Brig.-General Khattar Nasser Eldin and Col. Samir Hamadi.
In a separate statement, the US State Department said it was offering a reward of up to $10 million “for information leading to the disruption of the financial mechanisms of Hezbollah.”
Earlier in the day, Lebanon said an Israeli strike damaged a hospital in the country’s south, where Israel and Hezbollah have been trading fire despite a ceasefire announced April 17.
Since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran, Israeli soldiers have invaded and occupied part of south Lebanon, operating in an area that runs to around 10 kilometers (six miles) north of the border.
Israeli attacks have killed more than 2,900 people in Lebanon since the latest conflict began, including more than 400 since the ceasefire took effect, according to Lebanese authorities.
Last week, the truce was extended for 45 days following a third round of direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives in Washington.

Syrian, British officials discuss refugee return efforts
May 21, 2026
LONDON: Syrian and British officials met in Damascus on Thursday to discuss international migration issues and efforts to facilitate the safe return of Syrian refugees.
Ann Snow, the UK’s special envoy for Syria, and Kingsley Green, the director of international migration affairs, met Syrian Deputy Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Abdul Qader Tahan, and Deputy Director of Immigration and Passports Col. Walid Arrabi to discuss cooperation on migration-related issues.
The talks focused on procedures and practical measures to facilitate the safe and orderly return of Syrian refugees, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency.
The Syrian civil war, which lasted from 2011 to 2024, displaced 12 million people, with at least 5 million Syrians becoming refugees in neighboring countries.
The UK granted asylum to over 30,000 Syrians between 2011 and 2021. Germany hosted the largest number of people fleeing the war, with at least 1 million Syrians residing in the country.
Following the fall of the Bashar Assad regime in December 2024, the migration issue has been a central topic of discussion between officials in the Syrian Arab Republic and Europe. The Syrian government has reaffirmed that it will encourage the “voluntary” return of Syrians living in Europe, as many international sanctions on Syria have been lifted to assist the country in recovery.
In March, Syria’s President Ahmad Al-Sharaa met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to discuss Berlin’s efforts to repatriate Syrian refugees.

Lebanon says Israeli strike damaged hospital in south
May 21, 2026
BEIRUT: Lebanon said an Israeli strike on Thursday damaged a hospital in the country’s south, where Israel and Hezbollah have been trading fire despite a ceasefire.
The state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli aircraft “launched two strikes on the town of Tibnin near the public hospital, where significant damage was recorded.”
The health ministry circulated a video showing part of the hospital with shattered glass on the floor, blown-out ceiling panels and window panes, and other damage to what appeared to be offices.
According to the ministry, 16 hospitals have been damaged since the war erupted on March 2, while 116 emergency and health workers have been killed.
The NNA also reported Israeli airstrikes on other south Lebanon locations on Thursday, while an AFP photographer saw smoke rising after a raid on the village of Hanniyeh.
Hezbollah claimed a series of attacks including with rockets and drones on Israeli troops in south Lebanon, saying they came in retaliation for Israeli ceasefire violations.
Since the truce began on April 17, Israel has continued to launch strikes, carry out demolitions and issue evacuation orders in south Lebanon, saying it is targeting Hezbollah, which has also kept up attacks.
Last week the truce was extended for 45 days following a third round of direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives in Washington, discussions which the Iran-backed Hezbollah staunchly opposes.
Under the terms of the ceasefire published by Washington, Israel reserves the right to act against “planned, imminent or ongoing attacks.”
Lebanon’s health ministry said Thursday that Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,089 people in Lebanon since March 2.
The ministry said Wednesday that a strike on the town of Deir Qanun Al-Nahr this week killed 14 people, including three women and four children, one of them Syrian, updating a preliminary toll of 10 dead.
Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the Middle East war with rocket fire at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes.
Israeli responded with massive airstrikes and a ground invasion in the country’s south, where its troops are operating inside an Israeli-declared “yellow line” running around 10 kilometers (six miles) inside Lebanon along the border.

Preparations for next year’s Hajj have already begun, minister says
May 21, 2026
RIYADH: Preparations for next year’s Hajj pilgrimage have already begun, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al-Rabiah said on Wednesday.
Authorities are getting ready for next year before this year’s Hajj even begins on May 25, with an extensive network of government entities including pilgrim affairs offices and Hajj service providers involved, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Al-Rabiah’s remarks came during a panel discussion held on Wednesday as part of the third edition of Saudi Arabia’s Hajj Health and Safety Forum organized by the General Administration of Medical Services at the Ministry of Interior.
The minister explained that preparations for the upcoming Hajj season begin with meetings of the heads of pilgrim affairs offices and companies serving pilgrims, during which a comprehensive roadmap for the following season is developed before the current season ends.
He added that, since last year, the ministry has been working on a detailed plan with specific timelines in coordination with 78 countries to ensure seamless operations and oversee all operational aspects related to the holy sites.
This includes providing accommodation in Makkah and Madinah, transportation, catering, and aviation services for the more than 1.5 million pilgrims expected to attend.
He also noted that regular virtual meetings are held with pilgrim affairs offices to monitor readiness and track implementation of the plan.
Hajj is one of the world’s largest annual pilgrimages, mandatory for all able Muslims, and ensuring a successful journey for all those attending is one of the priorities of Saudi Arabia’s leadership.
The Kingdom has implemented new measures in recent years including the Makkah Route Initiative — which streamlines immigration by allowing travelers to complete visa procedures in their country of departure.

Saudi Arabia tightens rules on power banks aboard flights
May 22, 2026
RIYADH: The Kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation has updated regulations governing the carrying and use of power banks aboard aircraft, as a part of broader efforts to strengthen flight safety and regulatory oversight in the country, the Saudi Press Agency reported recently.
GACA issued a circular to airlines operating at Saudi airports outlining updated restrictions adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization under amendments to its Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air.
Under the revised rules, passengers are prohibited from recharging power banks onboard aircraft, while the use of power banks to charge personal electronic devices during flights is also discouraged.
Travelers are limited to carrying a maximum of two power banks each, and the devices must be kept in carry-on baggage inside the aircraft cabin.
GACA said the measures are intended to enhance aviation safety and reduce risks associated with lithium battery devices in aircraft cabins, in line with international standards issued by the ICAO.
The updated guidance comes as GACA continues to tighten enforcement across the aviation sector.
Earlier this year, the authority reported 609 violations in 2025, with financial penalties exceeding SR13.8 million ($3.6 million) against airlines, companies and individuals found in breach of civil aviation laws and regulations.
According to the SPA report, 404 violations were recorded of air carriers failing to comply with GACA instructions, resulting in fines of more than SR6.7 million. Another 136 violations related to breaches of passenger-rights-protection regulations, with penalties exceeding SR5 million.
The report also cited violations involving licensed companies, drone operators and airline passengers accused of misconduct onboard aircraft, alongside penalties for breaching aviation safety regulations and providing false information in licensing procedures.
GACA said the enforcement measures reflect its commitment to transparency, improved passenger experience and higher standards across Saudi Arabia’s air transport sector.

Ukrainian drone could have caused mass casualties – Greek defense minister
21 May, 2026
A Ukrainian naval drone found off a Greek island earlier this month could have sunk a civilian ship and led to mass casualties, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has said.
The unmanned surface vessel (USV) was reportedly a Ukrainian Magura V3 kamikaze drone, capable of carrying an explosive payload of up to 300 kg. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and senior government officials were reportedly briefed on the matter last week, according to CNN.
Speaking at a conference on Wednesday, Dendias refused to divulge the details of the investigation, but stressed that the drone could have caused immense damage.
“It was obviously something extremely dangerous… there is not the slightest doubt – I repeat, the slightest doubt – that this is a Ukrainian sea drone,” he said, adding that if a cruise liner crossed paths with the USV, the ship would have been at “the bottom of the sea.”
Dendias stressed that Kiev owes Athens “a very big apology,” as well as “the absolute assurance that something like this will not happen again in the wider region.”
Ukraine has used such drones for months to attack ships in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, targeting vessels it sees as linked to Moscow. Russia has condemned the strikes, calling them “terrorism and maritime piracy.”
Ukrainian UAVs targeting Russian infrastructure have also increasingly flown through the territory of other countries, such as the Baltic states and Finland, according to Moscow. Several Ukrainian drones have crashed in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland in recent weeks.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu said in April that if these countries deliberately allow Ukrainian drones to pass through their airspace, they become “open accomplices in aggression against Russia.” In this case, Russia has the right to self-defense, he warned.

Foreign media explore Azerbaijan’s historic Shamakhi during WUF13 tour
21 May 2026
On 21 May, as part of the 13th session of the United Nations World Urban Forum (WUF13), a media tour to Shamakhi was organised for representatives of foreign media visiting Azerbaijan, jointly by the Media Development Agency and the WUF13 Azerbaijan Operating Company.
The media tour first included a visit to the Shamakhi Juma Mosque, one of the oldest Muslim places of worship in Azerbaijan, the South Caucasus, and the broader Middle East, Azertag reports.
It was noted that the mosque, built in 743, has retained its historical and cultural significance despite having faced various historical trials and destructive earthquakes over the centuries.
It was emphasised that, during restoration work, the mosque’s historical architectural style and original elements were carefully preserved.
Finally, the foreign media representatives visited the village of Demirchi, which is rich in centuries-old blacksmithing traditions, and were provided with detailed information about the village’s history.
It was emphasised that Demirchi is one of the oldest villages in Shamakhi, with its history dating back to the 15th century. In ancient times, the village was called Gyuneychai, but due to the widespread development of blacksmithing in the area, the settlement was later renamed Demirchi.

Al Buraq Mosque launches new Community Fridge
21ST MAY 2026
A mosque has launched a new community fridge to support local families and reduce food wastage.
The Al‑Buraq Mosque, in Blackburn, launched the 'Blackburn Community Fridge’ on Saturday, May 16.
The initiative is aligned with other community fridge projects across the country.
The project, the mosque said, aims to encourage people to share their specific items for those who may need it.
The community fridge is located at 171 Addison Street, which is on the corner with Devonport road and across from the mosque and will be staffed by a team of volunteers.
Within the first day of the launch, around 25 people had already attended to make use of the products.
The launch took place after prayers at the mosque, and volunteers joined Blackburn with Darwen Labour group leader Cllr Phil Riley and newly elected Independent Councillor Maullana Siddiq Patel to mark the opening.
Speaking on the day, Tabassam Zabier said: “The vision, thought, and intention behind this was to support the local community.
“It is much needed. I must emphasise that in Blackburn, over the years, you do come to realise that while many of us are very fortunate, there are others who are not.
“There are families out there who genuinely struggle.
“These are the families who will find this community fridge useful.
“The Community Fridge brings help to the most needy.
“The products are things that families may need every day, like bread, milk and tinned food.
“One thing I must point out is that the initiative is not reliant on cash donations but more on products.
“We invite local businesses, shops, supermarkets and individuals to join us in this important mission. Your contributions of surplus food items will help us serve those who need it most.”
Since its launch during the Covid-19 pandemic, a total of 14 mosques across the country now host a community fridge.
Tabassam added: “Something like this requires a lot of effort, and we would like to thank the volunteers for their support.
“We would also like to thank Raja Video for making space at the shop to accommodate us.”
Anyone interested in supporting the Blackburn Community Fridge can call 07932 975218.

Councillor Shuile Syeda has become the first Muslim to be elected as Mayor of Merton.
Born and raised in the borough, Councillor Syeda represents St Helier ward and has served as Deputy Mayor for the last year.
Addressing the Annual Council meeting, following her election as Mayor on 20 May, Councillor Syeda said: “Being the first Muslim Mayor Merton’s history is not simply a personal achievement – it reflects the diversity, openness and unity that define our borough.
“Merton has always been a place where people from different backgrounds, cultures and faiths come together with mutual respect and understanding. It is a borough where every voice matters and where our differences strengthen us, rather than divide us.
“I hope my appointment sends a powerful message to every resident that in Merton everyone belongs and everyone has the opportunity to serve and succeed. Together, let us make Merton a shining example of what can be achieved when we stand united in diversity, compassion and shared purpose.”
During her mayoral year, Councillor Syeda will be fundraising for the Dons Local Action Group and Merton Mencap.
The Deputy Mayor for 2026/27 will be Councillor Joan Henry, who represents Pollards Hill ward.

East London Muslim centre ordered to shut down after running without planning permission
22 May 2026
A religious community centre on a residential street in east London has been ordered to stop running as it does not have planning permission.
The East Africa Muslim Cultural Group (EAMCG) in Derby Road failed to overturn a council planning enforcement notice in January. It also then failed to win planning permission for educational use this month.
Newham Council planning documents say the group’s headquarters is “in use as an unauthorised community centre, including as a place of worship”.
EAMCG first applied in December 2013 to change the use of its offices at 75 Derby Road – which are behind the street’s row of terraced houses – into a youth club.
However the council received four objections from neighbours and a petiton signed by 87 people who were against the plan, warning of noise and disturbance.
Officers refused to grant planning permission, saying that the change would “generate unacceptable levels of noise and nuisance” on the residential street. The group then also lost its subsequent appeal to the government’s Planning Inspectorate.
Despite this, EAMCG still appears to be using the site as a community centre, place of worship and radio station.
Its website advertises prayers, events, venue hire and teaching at its Derby Road HQ.
The council issued EAMCG with an enforcement notice in 2022, ordering it to stop, which the group also appealed against.
EAMCG argued that it had been using the site as a community centre for more than ten years. Under planning law, this would make it too late for the council to take enforcement action.
However, the Planning Inspectorate again ruled in the council’s favour in January this year.
The council submitted evidence to show that, when its officers visited the site in 2012, it had been vacant.
What’s more, the inspector found that EAMCG had tried to hide the planning breach from council enforcement officers in 2016, making its appeal invalid.
EAMCG then submitted a retrospective planning application in February, seeking approval to use the site for educational purposes.
However, when council officers visted in March, they found the site was also being used as “an education centre, charity offices and community radio station”.
Planning officers also noted the website still listed “weekly religious classes and other services held at the subject address”.
A planning officers’ report says the council received noise complaints about the building’s existing use.
Officers said use as an educational facility would “cause levels of noise and disturbance that will significantly disrupt neighbouring occupiers”.
Planning officers refused the application on Thursday, 7th May. However EAMCG’s website still advertises daily prayer sessions.
EAMCG did not respond to a request for comment.

Merz proposes limited EU status for Ukraine – media
21 May, 2026
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed granting Ukraine a limited “interim” status within the EU as a way to deal with its accession ambitions, according to media reports on Thursday that cited a letter by Merz to bloc leaders. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly demanded full membership by the end of 2027.
Kiev was granted EU candidate status in June 2022, following the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Since then, it has pushed for fast-tracked membership while some bloc leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Merz, have described such demands as unrealistic.
According to the German chancellor’s new proposal, Kiev would be allowed to tap into certain EU-funded programs, as well as request aid from EU members under the “mutual assistance clause” in the event of an attack.
Ukrainian representatives would also be allowed to participate in meetings of the European Council, the European Commission, and the European Parliament, but would not receive voting rights, according to the letter, cited by multiple media outlets, including Reuters and Euronews.
The status, which Merz reportedly described as “associate membership,” would not replace the standard accession process and could be revoked if Ukraine backslides on the reforms demanded by Brussels.
“It is obvious that we will not be able to complete the accession process shortly, given the countless hurdles, as well as the political complexities of ratification processes in various member states,” the chancellor wrote, as cited by Euronews.
Last month, Merz also said Ukraine’s “immediate” accession was “not possible.” Zelensky has repeatedly rejected anything short of full membership. Speaking to journalists at an EU summit in Cyprus in late April, he insisted that Ukraine had already “earned” its place in the bloc and did not need any kind of “symbolic” status.
Moscow has argued that Brussels uses the prospect of EU membership as political leverage rather than a genuine promise. Back in 2023, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the EU promise as “a carrot [on a stick] put in front of a carriage.”

NATO should ‘direct’ Ukrainian drones against Russia – Swedish PM
22 May, 2026
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has said NATO states should help Kiev “direct” its drone attacks “in the right directions,” blaming a string of Ukrainian UAV incursions into the airspace of the US-led bloc on Moscow.
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service said this week that Latvia allowed Ukraine to use its territory for potential drone attacks on Russia. Baltic officials have rejected the allegation, while insisting that Ukraine has the right to defend itself. However, they also asked Kiev to control its drones better.
Ukraine “must be more precise” with its drones, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Thursday, echoing similar warnings from Estonia and Finland.
Asked about the comment at a joint press briefing with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, the Swedish prime minister accused Russia of trying to “give the impression that other countries are kind of doing things that are not legitimate.”
“We should really not be open for the Russian narrative on this, but instead, of course, help the Ukrainians as much as we can to direct, to help them direct their attacks in the right directions,” Kristersson said.
“It’s my firm belief that the Ukrainians… certainly don’t want their drones to end up on friendly territory,” he said, claiming that “sometimes it’s a matter of jamming, sometimes it’s a matter of other disturbances.”
Rutte also sought to place responsibility for the incidents on Moscow while answering a loaded question involving the claim that Russia jammed or redirected the UAVs. He replied that Ukrainian drones are violating NATO airspace simply “because of the full-scale Russian attack against Ukraine and Ukraine having to defend itself.”
Since mid-March, Ukrainian long-range drones have repeatedly crossed Baltic and Nordic airspace while en route to targets in northwestern Russia, particularly oil export terminals in Leningrad Region.
In Estonia, a “stray” Ukrainian drone crashed into a power-plant chimney in late March, while this week a NATO F-16 fighter jet was scrambled to shoot down another UAV. Lithuania has seen incursions by “suspected” Ukrainian drones on at least four occasions, while Finland and Romania have also reported several incidents.
In Latvia, a failure to intercept a pair of drones that hit an oil storage facility on May 7 triggered the defense minister’s resignation, and the eventual collapse of Prime Minister Evika Silina’s government. Another drone alert on Thursday prompted NATO to scramble fighter jets.
Russia has dismissed attempts to blame it for Ukrainian drones entering NATO airspace, arguing that the incidents show Kiev is either unable to control its long-range UAVs or is being enabled by neighboring NATO states. The SVR warned that NATO membership will not shield countries that help Ukraine launch attacks into Russian territory.

National Pressure Grows to Free Palestinian-American Community Leader Salah Sarsour from ICE Detention
May 21, 2026
Half a Dozen Members of Congress Condemn His Wrongful Detention Alongside Over a Dozen WI Lawmakers and 200+ Organizations
(MILWAUKEE, WI, 5/21/2026) – Members of Congress and Wisconsin lawmakers have expressed alarm over ICE’s continued detention of Salah Sarsour, a Palestinian-American community leader and legal U.S. resident of over 30 years. Over a dozen Wisconsin lawmakers have calling for his release from ICE alongside Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin and members of Congress, including representatives Mark Pocan, Gwen Moore, Greg Casar, Summer Lee, and Rashida Tlaib, among others.
Lawmakers join the chorus of over 200 civil rights and community organizations nationwide who have signed on to a letter condemning his abduction on March 30th and its implications for free speech. The letter calls for Sarsour’s release and condemns the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) use of immigration courts to silence Palestinian and Muslim community leaders on behalf of the pro-Israel lobby. In addition, over 21,000 people have sent letters to their Members of Congress calling for action to secure Sarsour’s release.
More than a dozen Wisconsin electeds and political candidates at every level have released statements of support and called for Sarsour’s release, including Governor Tony Evers and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. Similar statements have come from the ACLU of Wisconsin, the American Federation of Teachers Local 212 union, Voces de la Frontera, and Wisconsin Democratic Party groups representing Black, Muslim and Jewish constituencies. On April 25th, Congresswoman Gwen Moore even visited Sarsour in detention to check on his condition.
“This is completely unacceptable. Salah Sarsour is a respected leader in the Milwaukee community, and his detention raises serious concerns on the continued targeting of lawful residents based on the color of their skin or their political beliefs,” Congresswoman Gwen Moore said.
Salah Sarsour is a successful small business owner, father of six, and caretaker for his elderly mother. He also serves as the elected volunteer President of the largest mosque in Wisconsin, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, and on the board of American Muslims for Palestine, an educational organization focused on Palestinian human rights. On March 30th, he was surrounded by over 10 ICE vehicles and taken out of state to an ICE facility in Indiana.
In a phone call amplified at an April 12th rally in Milwaukee, Sarsour told the crowd, “I cannot be silent while the American Constitution is under attack, while free speech is attacked. The Constitution is the pillar of American society and no administration or politician or President should be allowed to destroy our freedoms and American values.”
Organizations calling for Sarsour’s release include grassroots groups representing thousands of constituents nationwide. Since Sarsour was taken by ICE on March 30th, local and national advocacy has been constant in calling for his release:
On Thursday, April 2nd, three days after Salah Sarsour’s abduction by ICE, an emergency press conference from local advocacy organizations turned into a rally with hundreds of community members in attendance.
On April 19th, over six cities around the country mobilized actions calling to free Sarsour, drawing hundreds.
On April 21st, the City of Milwaukee Common Council voted unanimously on a resolution calling for his release, and a Chicago City Council resolution followed with a hearing on May 7th.
On April 27th, the legal team appeared in immigration court, where they forced the immigration judge to schedule a full evidentiary hearing requiring the government to demonstrate why removal proceedings should continue.
A national letter from local Jewish groups calling for Sarsour’s release has garnered over 8,700 signatures, condemning the DHS for “using antisemitism as a smokescreen” to attack Sarsour’s activism and civil liberties.
Sarsour’s next immigration court date is June 10th. His legal team prepares to demand that the government provide clear and convincing proof to support its allegations against him before an immigration judge in Kansas City, Missouri. They also continue to contest his detention as illegal retaliation for protected speech in ongoing habeas proceedings in federal district court.
For more information on the case and continued advocacy, see here: freesalah.info/about
Excerpts from the overwhelming number of statements of support for Salah Sarsour are included below:
Wisconsin Congressman Mark Pocan: “They took Salah Sarsour for apparently no reason other than his speaking out against Israel’s unjust war in Gaza and fighting for Palestinian rights.”
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wisconsin: “Salah Sarsour is a green card holder who has called Wisconsin home for 32 years. Despite having the legal right to be here, and having been vetted by the federal government before receiving his resident status, Salah was arrested by ICE….Sarsour has been outspoken in his support for Palestinian rights, and we’ve seen this administration abuse its power to retaliate against people they don’t agree with….We are certainly concerned that Salah may have been singled out because of his speech.”
Wisconsin Democratic Party Muslim and Jewish Caucuses: “Today, we are united in condemning the detention and planned deportation of Salah Sarsour, the President of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee. Salah is a husband, a father, a grandfather, and our Wisconsin neighbor for over 30 years….We urge all Wisconsinites to stand for a country where speaking your mind doesn’t lead to detention. Today we stand arm-in-arm fighting for that country.”

'If I do attend, I get killed': Donald Trump says he 'has a thing called Iran' stopping him from attending son's wedding
May 22, 2026
US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he may skip his eldest son Donald Trump Jr’s wedding amid escalating tensions over Iran, quipping that he would 'get killed' whether he attended the event or not.
Speaking to reporters during an Oval Office interaction, Trump said he would try to attend the wedding but suggested that the ongoing Iran situation and possible media scrutiny made the timing difficult.
"He'd like me to go… This not good timing for me. I have a thing called IRAN… If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed. By the fake news, of course," Trump said.
The remarks came as reports suggested that Donald Trump Jr, 48, is set to marry Palm Beach socialite and model Bettina Anderson this weekend at a private ceremony in the Bahamas.According to CNN, the guest list has intentionally been kept small, with only close family members and friends invited to the intimate affair.
Trump indicated that his attendance was uncertain due to international developments and security concerns surrounding presidential travel.
"That's one I can't win on," he added while referring to possible criticism from the media regardless of whether he attends the wedding.
Donald Trump Jr announced his engagement to Anderson in December during a White House holiday party. The couple reportedly got engaged at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. Anderson later hosted a bridal shower at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.
The upcoming ceremony will mark Trump Jr's second marriage. He was previously married to Vanessa Trump, with whom he shares five children, before their divorce in 2018. Vanessa Trump recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Post that, Trump Jr got engaged to Kimberly Guilfoyle, now the US ambassador to Greece, before the relationship ended in 2024.

CAIR Takes Government to Court Over Border Cell Phone Search
May 21, 2026
Lawyers from the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, took the federal government to trial this week and challenged the government’s searches of Dr. Osama Abu Irshaid’s cell phones at the U.S. border.
CAIR argued that Dr. Abu Irshaid, the executive director of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), was unlawfully targeted for his advocacy for Palestine. The court will decide whether the government violated his First and Fourth Amendment rights by executing the searches.
“The government targeted Dr. Osama Abu Irshaid because of his advocacy for Palestine, and all but admitted as much in court,” said Ahmad Kaki, Staff Attorney at CAIR Legal Defense Fund. “We hope and expect the court to find in Dr. Abu Irshaid’s favor. We will continue to fight the government’s illegal, invasive harassment of the Muslim community and pro-Palestine advocates across the country.”
BACKGROUNDER:
The federal government has, for years, harassed and searched Dr. Abu Irshaid when he returns from international travel. Twice in 2024, customs agents forced Dr. Abu Irshaid to turn over his cell phone for an “advanced” search. These advanced searches are remarkably invasive. The Government can and likely does download all of a user’s private and sensitive information during these advanced searches. Customs agents at the border must reasonably believe that a person is engaging in ongoing criminal activity to justify such a search. Agents had no legitimate reason to suspect Dr. Abu Irshaid of any crime. CAIR sued on his behalf.
As Dr. Abu Irshaid’s lawsuit progressed, government defendants admitted that they searched Dr. Abu Irshaid because of his leadership of AMP, and because of slanderous statements made against AMP by U.S. Representative James Comer (R-KY-1), in his capacity as a Congressional Committee chairperson. Comer and his Committee have a history of targeting groups that criticize Israel’s genocide in Gaza and that advocate for Palestinians.
At trial, CAIR argued that the customs agents’ admitted reasons for the invasive searches cannot satisfy the Fourth Amendment and that, instead, the Government unlawfully targeted Dr. Abu Irshaid for his pro-Palestine advocacy. Dr. Abu Irshaid now awaits a decision from the court.
Dr. Abu Irshaid’s experience is part of a disturbing and increasing trend of invasive and harassing searches at the border, targeting Muslim Americans and people advocating for Palestine, among other protected speech. CAIR continues to litigate this unlawful practice in courts around the country.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Coalition Files Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit Against U of Michigan Alleging Retaliation, Surveillance, Arrests, and Blacklisting of Black Muslim Pro-Palestinian Student
May 21, 2026
Lawsuit alleges University of Michigan and private security contractors engaged in an unconstitutional campaign to punish and silence pro-Palestinian speech on campus
(ANN ARBOR, MI, May 21, 2026) — The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), the Sugar Law Center for Economic & Social Justice, and partners today announced the filing of a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Josiah Walker, a Black Muslim student advocate at the University of Michigan, alleging that the university, university officials, campus police, and private security contractors at City Shield LLC/Amerishield engaged in a sustained campaign of retaliation, surveillance, harassment, excessive force, unlawful arrest, employment blacklisting, and unconstitutional punishment because of Mr. Walker’s pro-Palestinian speech and advocacy.
The filing of this lawsuit coincides with the two-year anniversary of the raid on the Pro Palestinian encampment at the University of Michigan.
The complaint, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, alleges that Mr. Walker was targeted because he advocated for Palestinian human rights, called for institutional divestment, condemned genocide, and participated in nonviolent student-led organizing on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus. The lawsuit brings claims under the United States Constitution, 42 U.S.C. § 1983and Michigan common law.
According to the complaint, the University of Michigan and its agents allegedly retaliated against Mr. Walker’s protected speech by commissioning prolonged and intrusive surveillance by a private security contractor, detaining and arresting him without lawful basis, using excessive force against him, seizing personal and religious property, issuing retaliatory trespass bans without due process permanently barring him from future university employment, and allegedly coordinating exaggerated or misleading police reports to justify invasive searches of his private digital communications.
The lawsuit further alleges that Mr. Walker was subjected to discriminatory and retaliatory treatment because of his viewpoint, speech, associations, race, and religion. The complaint states that similarly situated students engaged in other forms of protest were not subjected to comparable arrest, banishment, surveillance, or employment blacklisting, while Mr. Walker was repeatedly criminalized, attacked, surveilled, and excluded from campus.
Sugar Law Executive and Legal Director John Philo said:
“It is breath-taking that any university, let alone one with the history and traditions of the University of Michigan, would depart so radically from the values of free debate and vigorous inquiry on issues of deep public concern. The University has targeted students engaged in nonviolent protest because they expressed one viewpoint that institutional powerbrokers strongly disfavor — advocating for an end to a genocide in Palestine and divestment from Israel. To silence such speech, the University subjected Josiah to unprecedented surveillance by private contractors, physical assault by university police, and a series of baseless employment bans and prohibitions against entering campus buildings and public spaces. The University’s actions are morally and legally wrong.”
CAIR-MI Lead Staff Attorney, Amy V. Doukoure said:
“Public universities do not get to celebrate free speech when it is convenient and then unleash police, private surveillance contractors, trespass bans, criminal charges, and employment blacklists when students advocate for Palestinian human rights. Public universities are bound by the First and Fourteenth Amendments, not by political pressure or viewpoint preference. When a public university uses state power and private security operatives to surveil, punish, and intimidate a Black Muslim student because of his protected speech, that is not campus safety. That is unconstitutional retaliation.”
Plaintiff Joshiah Walker said:
“Public universities ought to be places where people can be critical of foreign governments without facing undue harms to the integrity of their persons, interests, and property. The University of Michigan’s decision to mobilize public and private assets to suppress my viewpoints was dangerously irresponsible and constitutes a profound act of institutional betrayal that must be rectified.”
This case is the latest federal civil rights lawsuit challenging the University of Michigan’s treatment of pro-Palestinian speech and advocacy on campus.
In December 2024, CAIR-MI along with Sugar Law and other partners announced a lawsuit brought by pro-Palestinian students, alumni, and Students Allied for Freedom and Equality challenging the university’s disciplinary actions against student protesters and suspension of SAFE.
In April 2025, The ACLU of Michigan and Sugar Law Center also filed a federal lawsuit challenging the University of Michigan’s trespass-ban and disruptive-action policies as unconstitutional restrictions on protest activity, including protest activity in support of Palestinian human rights.
In May 2025, the Sugar Law Center and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee filed a separate federal lawsuit on behalf of former University of Michigan employees alleging their Frist Amendment rights were violated after they were fired and blacklisted for participating in pro-Palestinian protests.
All three lawsuits are still pending and working their way through the federal courts.
The lawsuit seeks to vindicate Mr. Walker’s constitutional rights, hold the defendants accountable, and ensure that Michigan’s public universities remain places where diverse viewpoints are protected rather than punished.

Rubio says Cuba is threat to US as Havana accuses him of 'lies'
May 22, 2026
Sofia Ferreira Santos
Cuba poses a "national security threat" to the US and the likelihood of a peaceful agreement is "not high", US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.
His comments come just a day after the US charged Cuba's former president Raúl Castro with murder over the 1996 downing of two planes resulting in the killing of US nationals.
Rubio said Washington's preference was "a diplomatic solution" but warned that President Donald Trump had the right and obligation to protect his country against any threat.
Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez accused Rubio of "lies" and said the island had never posed a threat to the US.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Rubio said diplomacy "remains our preference with Cuba", but added: "I'm just being honest with you, you know, the likelihood of that happening, given who we're dealing with right now, is not high."
He also accused Cuba of being "one of the leading sponsors of terrorism in the entire region", which Rodríguez vehemently denied in a post on X.
The Cuban foreign minister criticised Rubio for trying to "instigate a military aggression" and accused the US government of "ruthlessly and systematically" attacking his country.
Cuba is suffering from a fuel crisis exacerbated by an effective US oil blockade, while under pressure from the Trump administration to make a deal.
Its citizens have experienced extended blackouts and food shortages over the last few months.
Rubio said the country had accepted a US offer of $100m (£74.4m) in humanitarian aid.
Trump has repeatedly sought to exert pressure on Cuba and has openly discussed toppling its communist regime.
Wednesday's indictment of the former Cuban president is seen by some as reminiscent of Trump's seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January.
Asked by reporters whether - and how - his government would get Castro to the US to face the charges, Rubio replied: "I'm not going to talk about how we're going to get him here, if we were trying to get him here, why would I say to the media what our plans are about that?"
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who announced the charges in Miami on Wednesday, said the US "expect he will show up here, by his own will or another way".
On Thursday, Rubio also announced on X that the US had arrested Adys Lastres Morera, the sister of one of the top officials of a Cuban military-run conglomerate that controls most of the lucrative parts of the country's economy.
Morera was living in Florida "while also aiding Havana's communist regime", Rubio alleged. She was arrested by immigration enforcement and will remain in custody pending deportation proceedings.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said Cuba was a "failed country" and that his administration was trying to help them "on a humanitarian basis".
He said Cuban-Americans "want to go back to their country" and help Cuba succeed.
"Other presidents have looked at this for 50, 60 years doing something and it looks like I'll be the one that does it, so I would be happy to do it," Trump said.

Trump says he will speak to Taiwan's president in break from protocol
Koh Ewe
May 22, 2026
US President Donald Trump says he will talk to Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te about a possible arms sale, in what would be a sharp departure from diplomatic tradition.
US and Taiwanese leaders have not spoken directly since 1979 - when Washington severed formal ties with Taiwan to recognise the Chinese government in Beijing.
China claims Taiwan as its territory and has not ruled out taking it by force. The US has long supported the self-ruled island and is bound by law to provide it with a means of self-defence, but has balanced this with maintaining diplomatic relations with China.
As president-elect in 2016, Trump took a phone call from Taiwan's then leader Tsai Ing-wen, angering Beijing.
President Lai, who took office in 2024, is behind one of the strongest pushes in years to strengthen the island's defence.
When asked on Wednesday if he planned to speak to Lai ahead of making a decision on US arms sales, Trump said: "I'll speak to him. I speak to everybody.. we'll work on that, the Taiwan problem."
He also hailed his relationship with China's President Xi as "amazing", on the back of a two-day summit in Beijing last week.
When asked about the potential conversation between Trump and Lai, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday that China "firmly opposes official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan", as well as US arms sales to Taiwan.
China urges the US to "stop sending wrong signals to the separatist forces in Taiwan," the spokesperson said.
In 1979, the US passed the Taiwan Relations Act which states that the US can "provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character" - which is why it continues to sell weapons to Taiwan.
Trump has said he has yet to decide if the sale of a $14bn (£10.4bn) arms package to Taiwan, reportedly including anti-drone equipment and air-defence missile systems, will go ahead.
According to a report by the Financial Times, Beijing is currently holding up a proposed visit by the Pentagon's top policy official, Elbridge Colby - saying it cannot approve a visit until Trump decides how he will proceed with the arms deal.
Last week, while flying back from Beijing on Air Force One after his meeting with President Xi, Trump was similarly asked about weapons sales to Taiwan, to which he said he would "make a determination over the next fairly short period".
"I have to speak to the person that right now is, you know who he is, that's running Taiwan," he said.
During Trump's visit to Beijing, China had made it clear that Taiwan was one of the biggest issues in its relationship with the US, with Xi warning of "conflict" between the two superpowers if handled poorly.
And while Trump dismissed the potential for conflict between the US and China over the island, he said Xi felt "very strongly" about Taiwan. "I made no commitment either way," he told reporters aboard Air Force One last week.
Since the Trump-Xi meeting, Lai has issued statements saying that the island is a "sovereign, independent democratic country" and that peace in the Taiwan Strait will not be "sacrificed or traded away".
Lai has also emphasised that US arms sales were a "key factor in maintaining regional peace and stability".
Taiwan's foreign ministry said on Thursday that Lai would be "happy" to discuss with Trump issues related to "maintaining the stable status quo in the Taiwan Strait".
Trump's break with tradition in 2016 resulted with China lodging a complaint with the US over the call.
Trump also said he had discussed the arms sales "in great detail" with Xi - another surprising break from US policy if true.
In 1982 the US assured Taiwan that it would not consult Beijing on arms sales to Taiwan. But when asked about that commitment as he flew back from Beijing, Trump said the 1980s was a "long way".
Last December, the US approved a $11bn (£8.2bn) arms sale to Taiwan - one of the largest ever - which drew ire from Beijing.
Taiwan has under President Lai signficantly ramped up its defence spending to counter growing military pressure from China.
Many Taiwanese consider themselves to be part of a separate nation - though most are in favour of maintaining the status quo in which Taiwan neither declares independence from China nor unites with it.

Trump gifts Polish president 5,000 more US troops
21 May, 2026
President Donald Trump has announced that the US will send 5,000 additional troops to Poland, citing his support for the country’s conservative president, Karol Nawrocki.
The move comes after the Pentagon abruptly canceled a planned rotation of 4,000 US troops into Poland last week, triggering confusion among Polish officials. Vice President J.D. Vance later described it as a delay rather than a reduction, saying the media “overreacted.”
“Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday.
Trump’s announcement follows his decision to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany amid growing tensions with Berlin over the US-Israeli war against Iran. The president previously suggested that the troops could be moved to Poland, touting his “great relationship” with Nawrocki, who defeated the pro-EU liberal candidate of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s party last year.
The White House and the Pentagon have yet to clarify whether the additional troops Trump promised are the same brigade whose rotation was paused or the troops being withdrawn from Germany.
Trump has repeatedly accused European NATO members of failing to pay enough for US “protection,” while treating troop deployments as a political reward. The White House has reportedly drawn up a “naughty and nice” list of NATO members based on their support for Washington’s policies, including the Iran war.
The US currently has around 80,000 troops stationed across Europe, including more than 38,000 in Germany, according to a Council on Foreign Relations analysis. Poland, which hosts about 10,000 US troops, has been described as a “model ally” by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Reuters reported earlier this week that the Pentagon also plans to “significantly scale down” the pool of US forces and capabilities that NATO’s European members can rely on during a major crisis under the bloc’s NATO Force Model.
Moscow has condemned the growing militarization of Europe, arguing that Western governments are using a fabricated Russian threat to justify turning the EU into a military bloc and to distract from domestic problems.

Undocumented foreigners seek safety as S.African anti-migrant marches intensify
May 22, 2026
Dozens of foreign nationals sought refuge at a church centre in South Africa's eastern city of Durban on Wednesday as mobs of locals stepped up a weeks-long campaign against undocumented migrants.
Small but vocal anti-migrant protests have picked up across the country in recent weeks, with one Durban-based group telling undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country by June 30.
About 250 people -- mostly women and children -- gathered behind the gates of the Diakonia Council of Churches building in Durban's city centre, some saying they feared for their safety after a campaign of harassment and threats.
Miriamu Mokonzi from the Democratic Republic of Congo's conflict-plagued Kivu region told AFP that mobs had visited her home at the weekend to ask when her family was leaving.
"They warned that if we don't leave by the end of the month, we will be attacked or killed," said Mokonzi. "That is why I am here with my children," she said, pointing to two boys nearby.
Durban, a major port city and economic hub, has been a flashpoint for xenophobic violence with organised groups targeting foreign nationals under different banners.
The March and March group fronted by men in traditional Zulu dress and carrying shields and sticks has told undocumented migrants to leave by June 30, accusing them of being involved in crime.
Its demand has no legal weight and is not backed by the authorities but has raised alarm among migrants, with disinformation spread on social media fuelling tensions.
Many of the people gathered at the church centre said they had been hounded in their homes, particularly in townships and informal settlements, by vigilantes moving door to door delivering threats.
Several women reported being robbed of cellphones, money and other belongings.
Moses Ombeni, also from the DRC, said the migrants gathered at the centre were from other African countries including Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.
The group had sought protection at a police station earlier in the week but were forced to leave when police used rubber bullets and teargas, he said, with some reporting injuries.
South Africa has faced recurring waves of xenophobic violence since 2008, when dozens of migrants were killed and thousands displaced in attacks across the country.
Similar flare-ups occurred in 2015 and again in 2021, often sparked by economic frustrations and political mobilisation around anti-immigrant rhetoric.
The latest spike in anti-immigrant tensions comes as political parties seek support ahead of local government elections in six months.

DRC Ebola hospital set on fire as protesters demand access to bodies of dead relatives
May 22, 2026
Violence has erupted in eastern DR Congo's Ituri province after tensions linked to the handling of victims of the latest Ebola outbreak.
Protesters in the town of Rwampara wanted to recover the bodies of relatives who died of Ebola in order to bury them. When they were denied, they set the hospital on fire, according to local reports.
Video footage shared by a healthcare worker appeared to show security forces intervening to retake control of the building.
The incident comes as a first Ebola case has been confirmed in the region's South Kivu province, under the control of M23 militia, the group's spokesperson said on Thursday.
Efforts to get a grip on the latest outbreak of the deadly haemorrhagic disease, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an international emergency, have been hampered by the DRC's long-running conflicts, including that between the Congolese army and the M23.
Having seized swathes of land in the mineral-rich east with Rwanda's help, the M23 has set up to govern for the long run in areas under its control, installing a parallel administration to the Congolese government.
But the armed group has never had to manage the response to a serious epidemic of a disease like Ebola, which has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa in the past half-century.
According to the M23 spokesman, tests "confirm a new positive case" from the South Kivu provincial capital Bukavu, which fell into M23 hands in February 2025. But the case involved a "person coming from Kisangani", a major city in the eastern Tshopo province where no Ebola infections from the current outbreak have so far been recorded.
According to the WHO, 139 people have died in the latest outbreak. Nearly 600 probably cases have been identified.

DHQ Reveals Identity Of Terrorists Behind Oyo Abduction
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
May 22, 2026
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said the recent abduction in Oyo State was carried out by terrorists displaced from other parts of the country following intensified military operations.
Naija News reports that the military high command stated this on Thursday while reacting to what it described as “mischievous and misleading publications” over its comments on terrorists and criminal elements operating in the South-West.
In a statement signed by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, the DHQ, said the attackers were members of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad terrorist group.
The DHQ said the group had been dislodged from other parts of the country as a result of sustained military offensives.
“The recent incidence of kidnap in Oyo State was clearly perpetrated by terrorists of the JAS Group that have been dislodged from other parts of the country due to high-intensity operations being conducted all over,” the statement read.
The military denied reports suggesting that it described terrorists operating in the South-West as ordinary criminals.
“It is, therefore, inaccurate and misleading to suggest that the Defence Headquarters, at any point, referred to vicious and violent terrorists as criminals,” Onoja stated.
The Defence Headquarters said its earlier clarification on security developments in the South-West was meant to provide an intelligence-based context.
It added that the explanation was necessary to prevent misinformation and avoid unnecessary panic among residents.
The DHQ also said it did not undermine any elected official or downplay the gravity of the attack.
“At no time did the Defence Headquarters undermine the authority of any democratically elected leader or seek to diminish the gravity of the heinous crime committed against innocent citizens by terrorist elements,” the statement added.
Troops Deployed
The military said troops remained deployed across affected areas in collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders.
It said the deployment was aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks threatening national peace and stability.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in dismantling all criminal and terrorist networks threatening the peace, stability and unity of the nation,” the statement said.
The clarification followed attacks on communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where armed terrorists abducted pupils, teachers and other residents from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle.
The incident also left several people dead.
One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed after a video linked to the attack surfaced online.

Activist Justice Crack Freed From DSS Custody
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
May 22, 2026
Human rights activist and blogger, Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, has regained freedom from the custody of the Department of State Services.
His release was announced on Thursday night by activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in a post on 𝕏.
Naija News reports that Sowore described Chidiebere’s detention as unjust and unlawful.
Announcing the development, Sowore said the blogger had finally regained his freedom.
Sowore wrote, “Justice Crack is out now. He is finally free from the unjust detention imposed by the lawless Department of State Services (DSS).
“This victory belongs to all who spoke out, resisted intimidation, and demanded justice.”
Sowore had earlier raised concerns over alleged attempts by the DSS to frustrate Chidiebere’s release despite meeting most of his bail conditions.
He accused the secret police of withholding the activist’s international passport, thereby complicating the final process required for his release.
Chidiebere is being prosecuted by the DSS over alleged cybercrime offences linked to a viral video concerning the Nigerian Army.
Court Granted ₦5 Million Bail
The Federal High Court in Abuja granted Chidiebere bail on May 18, 2026, in the sum of ₦5m, with one surety in like sum.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, while ruling on the bail application, ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must have maintained a fixed residential address for at least four years.
The court also directed that the surety must provide proof of residence, either a tenancy agreement or a certificate of occupancy, to be deposited with the court registry.
The judge further ordered that the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 15.
The surety was also required to provide evidence of at least three months’ salary payments, a letter of authentication from the immediate head of the department, and proof of pensionable employment.
Justice Abdulmalik also directed the surety to depose to an affidavit of means and submit a recent passport photograph to the court.
The defendant was ordered to deposit his passport with the court as part of the bail conditions.

Presidency Dismisses Nigerians Begging World Bank To Stop Loans
May 21, 2026
By Justina Otio
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has dismissed Nigerian citizens who flooded the World Bank’s social media accounts to beg the organisation to stop lending to Nigeria.
Speaking on Arise Television on Thursday, he asserted that it was election season, hence he would not put it past the opposition to be responsible for the act.
He, however, stated that the federal government has the duty to execute the provisions of the Constitution.
He said, “This is the eve of election, and so, it’s difficult to tell if the citizens who flooded the social media page of the World Bank asking that Nigeria be denied the right to borrow are opposition members.
“Whether they are opposition or not, government has the duty to execute the provision of the constitution.
“In leadership, you listen to people, but when it comes to carrying out your responsibility, you do that in accordance with the law.
“As a a government, you are going to react to a people who on social media said do not borrow Nigeria. What if you have another set of people saying go and borrow? How are you going to move as a leader?
“Leadership is not guided by certain things that do not have the backing of law. World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, IMF, and experts in the field said our borrowing so far is still in order.”

Nigerians Should Blame FG If We Go On Strike Again – ASUU
May 21, 2026
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka Zone, on Thursday warned Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible if public universities are shut down again.
The union said the government had failed to fully implement the agreement it signed with ASUU in December 2025.
ASUU made this known during a press conference held at the Benue State University campus in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Nsukka Zone, Christian Opata, and the union’s National Investment Officer, Celesine Aguoru, addressed journalists at the briefing.
Opata said the December 2025 agreement, which was expected to take effect from January 2026, had not been holistically implemented.
According to him, the Federal Government had failed to provide the required financial backing needed to fully execute the agreement.
He noted that while some parts of the agreement had been partially implemented, several key welfare components remained unattended to.
The zonal coordinator listed the outstanding issues to include the Consolidated Tools Allowances, Earned Academic Allowances and Professorial Allowances.
He said the allowances had yet to be integrated into the Consolidated Academic Staff Salary Scale as part of the monthly remuneration package for lecturers.
Opata expressed disappointment that the union’s hopes of resolving long-standing welfare issues had continued to suffer setbacks due to what he described as the government’s failure to act decisively.
He said several arrears and deductions owed to lecturers remained unpaid despite the agreement between both parties.
“As the time of holding this press conference, arrears arising from the 25-35% salary award, promotion arrears, unpaid third-party deductions (including check-off dues, cooperative contributions, and pension remittances), salary shortfalls linked to the introduction of IPPIS, as well as the withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries resulting from the 2022 ASUU industrial action foisted on us by government remains unsettled as our members are yet to be paid,” Opata said.
The union said the continued delay had worsened the welfare conditions of academic staff in public universities.
The ASUU zonal chairman also accused the Federal Government of failing to inaugurate the Implementation Monitoring Committee provided for in the 2025 agreement.
According to him, the committee was expected to ensure faithful implementation of the agreement and prevent bureaucratic interference.
Opata said the failure to set up the committee had already affected the execution of key parts of the agreement.
He added that some of the issues the committee was meant to prevent had already occurred, resulting in what he described as a blemished implementation of a major provision of the December 2025 agreement.
Opata also faulted the proposed National Research Council announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, in April.
He said ASUU was not carried along in the process despite being a party to the agreement that addressed research development in Nigerian universities.
The union said any major policy affecting research and university development should involve academic stakeholders in order to ensure credibility, ownership and effectiveness.
Corroborating Opata’s position, ASUU’s National Investment Officer, Celesine Aguoru, warned that Nigerians should not blame the union if public universities are forced to shut down again.
Aguoru said the government must be held accountable for failing to honour agreements freely entered into with the union.
“If an agreement signed by both parties cannot be respected by the government, Nigerians should hold the government responsible if universities are shut down,” Aguoru said.
He maintained that ASUU was not eager to embark on another strike, but said the union could not continue to watch the government ignore agreements affecting the survival of public universities and the welfare of lecturers.
Aguoru urged Nigerians, parents, students and other stakeholders to prevail on the Federal Government to respond to ASUU’s demands before the situation degenerates.
Naija News reports that the warning comes despite repeated assurances by the current administration that it would end the incessant shutdown of Nigerian universities by unions.
ASUU has repeatedly accused successive governments of failing to honour agreements reached with the union, a development that has often led to prolonged industrial actions in the university system.
The union said the latest delay in implementing the 2025 agreement could again threaten academic stability in public universities unless urgent steps are taken by the Federal Government.

Police open probe into fake TikTok account insulting Malaysia’s king

Royal Malaysia Police investigates defamatory content against King Sultan Ibrahim shared via a fake TikTok account under multiple laws
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has opened an investigation paper into defamatory and insulting content against His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, believed to have been posted via a fake TikTok account.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation was being conducted by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT).
“Yes, we have opened an investigation paper and are conducting further investigations through USJT, Bukit Aman CID,” he said.
“At present, the investigation is being carried out under the Sedition Act and Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting a person with intent to provoke a breach of the peace,” he said when contacted today.
He said the probe was also being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or applications.
Kumar reminded the public to be more careful when posting content on social media, particularly on matters involving the 3R issues of race, religion and royalty.
“The CID will not compromise on matters that could disrupt public safety and order, to ensure that peace and prosperity are always maintained,” he said.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that the Johor Royal Press Office had called for stern action to be taken against those responsible for creating a fake TikTok account to slander and insult Sultan Ibrahim.
According to a post on the King’s official Facebook page, the Royal Press Office said the account, using the name “Sultan Ibrahim Ismail”, was found to be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to spread insulting content against His Majesty.
Among the uploaded content was a video containing allegations that the King of Malaysia enjoyed eating pork, a post that it described as untrue and touching on sensitivities, given that His Majesty was a Malay Ruler and the Muslim Head of State.

PAS will not bow to Bersatu, says Abdul Hadi on ties
22 May 2026
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang says the party will not bow to Bersatu and is reassessing ties ahead of GE16 if consensus fails.
MARANG: PAS will not bow to the will of any party, including Bersatu, in determining its political direction.
Its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party would thoroughly examine every negative action taken by Bersatu.
He also said that PAS does not rule out the possibility of moving forward without Bersatu ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16) should both parties fail to reach a consensus in their political cooperation.
The party is currently reassessing its ties with its ally in Perikatan Nasional (PN) comprehensively to ensure it does not affect the party’s performance.
“We are reviewing all aspects (of the cooperation) because the election is approaching. Elections come with gains and losses. If it affects election matters, we will act accordingly,” he said at a press conference after a Dhuha lecture here today.
Abdul Hadi also indicated that the ties between the two parties are currently being tested, saying that PAS remains patient, but stressing that such patience has its limits.

SNCC confirms threats against GSF 2.0 activist Haroqs, with security measures in place and government assurance of safety
SEPANG: The Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) has confirmed that Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 activist Muhammad Hareez Adzrami, also known as Haroqs, has received threats believed to be linked to a proxy of the Israeli Zionist regime.
In this regard, SNCC director-general Datuk Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby said that a number of security measures have been put in place for Haroqs, 26, and his mother.
“One of our participants, Hareez or Haroqs, was threatened via social media believed to be linked to a proxy of the colonialists.
“We have immediately informed the Government about this matter, as it involves not only his safety there but also the safety of his mother (in Malaysia),” he said at a press conference on the latest developments of the GSF 2.0 mission here today.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had assured that the safety of Haroqs and his family members would be safeguarded.
“The Prime Minister assured me that we (the government) would seek assistance from the Turkish authorities in monitoring (Haroqs’ safety), as Turkiye has intelligence capabilities and diplomatic relations,” he said.
Local media portals reported that Haroqs’ family had received threats believed to be linked to parties associated with Mossad.
The matter emerged after an X account known as Mossad Commentary uploaded a photograph and video of the activist in a post that later went viral, prompting reactions from Malaysian social media users.
The post was accompanied by the caption: “This is one of the Global Sumud Flotilla activists. If you know his mother, tell her he’s okay. I’m sure she’s worried about him”.
Earlier, Sani Araby said that all 428 GSF 2.0 humanitarian activists, including 29 Malaysians detained by Israel in international waters, have now been released, with Malaysians expected to return home this Sunday.

IWK wins SDG 6 award at Global Water Awards 2026
21 May 2026
IWK wins the SDG 6 Award at the Global Water Awards 2026 in Madrid for its solar-powered sanitation initiative cutting emissions and costs
KUALA LUMPUR: National sewerage company Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd has won the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) Award category at the Global Water Awards 2026 in Madrid, Spain, last Tuesday.
IWK said in a statement today that the award, presented by Global Water Intelligence (GWI), recognised the company’s entry titled “Solar-powered Sanitation: No Upfront Cost, Cuts Emissions”, which showcased how the use of renewable energy could strengthen wastewater treatment operational performance while driving sustainable infrastructure development and enhancing financial resilience.
IWK said the award-winning programme involved the implementation of solar energy systems at 16 sewage treatment plants nationwide through a Private Financing Initiative (PFI) model.
“This initiative generates a solar energy capacity of 6.3 MWp and produces approximately 7,700 MWh of renewable energy annually to support the treatment of nearly 148 million m3 of wastewater every year.
“The initiative is expected to save approximately RM41.8 million in grid electricity costs while reducing more than 5 Gg of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions annually,” the statement said.
IWK chief executive officer Narendran Maniam said in the same statement that sustainability is at the core of every aspect of the company’s operations, and the initiative reflects IWK’s ongoing commitment to strengthening efforts to ensure sustainability, not only from an environmental perspective but also financially.
Meanwhile, GWI founder, chief executive officer and publisher Christopher Gasson said IWK’s initiative stood out for demonstrating how innovative financing and renewable energy could be effectively integrated into essential sanitation infrastructure.
“By delivering measurable operational, environmental and financial impacts without requiring upfront public capital expenditure, IWK has created a model that utilities around the world can emulate in efforts to achieve SDG 6 and build more resilient water systems,” he said.
The Global Water Awards, held in conjunction with the Global Water Summit, aim to recognise outstanding achievements, leadership in sustainability and technological innovation in the global water industry.
In 2023, IWK also received the Distinction Award at the Global Water Awards in the Public Water Agency of the Year category.

85% of consumers shielded from electricity tariff hikes, says DPM
22 May 2026
The government assures that 85% of Malaysian consumers are protected from power tariff hikes, with minor adjustments possible for high-usage households.
PUTRAJAYA: The government has assured that electricity tariff protection will remain in place to ensure about 85% of Malaysians are shielded from any impact, despite rising global energy costs expected to put pressure on prices and several economic sectors.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said domestic consumers using up to 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month would not be affected, although minor adjustments may apply to those exceeding the threshold.
“Our electricity cost structure guarantees that 85% of the people will not be affected, and the government will maintain that protection,” he told reporters after attending PETRA’s monthly assembly, here today.
Fadillah said any anticipated increase would not involve a blanket electricity tariff hike, but would instead stem from global supply disruptions that have driven up logistics and supply chain costs.
He said consumers using more than 600kWh per month might face slight adjustments.
There may be increases involving certain industries or sectors, but we are still evaluating the overall impact,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Fadillah said Malaysia was also feeling the effects of global supply chain uncertainty and supply crises, but stressed that the government remained committed to addressing the challenges through a pragmatic approach prioritising public welfare.
He said the government’s main focus was to ensure a stable supply of essential needs, protect the public from excessive cost-of-living pressures and strengthen the country’s long-term economic resilience.
“Various measures, including targeted assistance, price controls, stronger energy security and strategic cooperation between the government, industry and the people, are being and will continue to be implemented.
“What is important is that we face this crisis with a spirit of togetherness,” he said.
Fadillah also reminded PETRA staff to uphold integrity, discipline and professionalism in carrying out their duties to preserve public confidence in the ministry.
“The people’s trust in the ministry depends on how we work, make decisions and uphold the image of the public service,” he said.

Commander-in-beef: Bangladesh's 'Donald Trump' buffalo wins fans
21 MAY 2026
Crowds in Bangladesh are flocking to snap photographs with an unlikely social media star -- an albino buffalo with flowing blond hair nicknamed "Donald Trump" due to be sacrificed within days.
Owner Zia Uddin Mridha, 38, said his brother named the 700 kilogramme (1,500 pound) bull over its flowing helmet of hair resembling the signature look of the US president.
"My younger brother picked this name because of the buffalo's extraordinary hair," he told AFP at his farm in Narayanganj, just outside the capital Dhaka.
Mridha said a constant stream of curious visitors -- social media fans, onlookers and children -- have come throughout May, eager to see the internet sensation.
He watched as men poured a cool bucket of water over the bull's head, running a pink brush through its blond combover, neatly tucked between sweeping curved horns.
"The only luxury he enjoys is bathing four times a day," Mridha said, stressing that the similarities between the bull and the president stopped at the hair.
Officials from the livestock department said albino buffaloes are extremely rare, and appear white or pink due to a lack of melanin production.
- Eid al-Azha -
Muslim-majority Bangladesh, a South Asian nation of 170 million people, is preparing for Eid al-Azha, the Islamic "feast of the sacrifice", later this month.
More than 12 million livestock -- including goats, sheep, cows and buffaloes -- are expected to be sacrificed during the holiday, when many poorer families get a rare chance to feast on meat.
Mridha said the stress of the crowds had caused the buffalo to lose weight, forcing restrictions on public viewing.
Still, children continue to peer through the gates for a glimpse.
Businessman Faisal Ahmed, 30, was among those who managed to get close, snapping photographs.
"Truly, the features are similar between the buffalo and President Donald Trump," Ahmed told AFP, after arriving with five friends and relatives to see the animal.
"My nephew took a one-hour boat journey just to come and see 'Donald Trump'," he added.
- 'Making a sacrifice' -
While the Trump buffalo has become a national star online, it is not the only buffalo with a nickname.
His companions include an aggressive bull named "Tufan", meaning "storm", a generously sized animal called "Fat Boy" and the gentle-natured "Sweet Boy".
One golden-haired bull was named after Brazilian footballer Neymar for his bleached-blond cut.
Mridha, who has cared for his four-year-old buffalo for the past year, looked with affection at the animal, snuffling through a bowl of fodder.
"I am going to miss Donald Trump, but that is the core spirit of Eid al-Azha -- making a sacrifice."

FM’s recent China visit injects fresh momentum into ‘Belt and Road’ cooperation: Yao Wen
22 MAY 2026
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman’s recent visit to China had injected fresh momentum into “Belt and Road” cooperation, noting that the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership would continue to advance and bring greater benefits to the people of both countries.
Referring to the foreign minister’s “successful” visit to China, the envoy said both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, infrastructure, water resource management, the digital economy, green development, healthcare, and people-to-people exchanges through practical projects.
Yao made the remarks at a launching ceremony for the “2026 Chinese Government Training Programs” at the Embassy on Thursday evening.
Director General of the East Asia and Pacific Wing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Nore-Alam and Joint Secretary of the Economic Relations Division under the Ministry of Finance Kawshar Jahan, among others, were present.
Since the formation of the new government, at least four Chinese enterprises have signed investment agreements with Bangladesh in just over three months, with intended investments totaling nearly $100 million, Ambassador Yao said.
He said China has become the largest source of foreign investment in Bangladesh since the new government took office and is actively advancing several priority projects, including the expansion and modernization of Mongla Port facilities, the China-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital project, and the China-Bangladesh Friendship Residential Hall at the University of Dhaka.
Human resource development cooperation is an important component of the broader partnership between the two countries, the envoy said.
“This year is especially significant, as it is the first since the successful general election in February and the formation of the new government led by the BNP,” he said.
“In the past three months since the new government took office, Bangladesh and China have continued their long-standing friendship and deepened cooperation across various sectors,” he added.
Earlier, a high-level BNP delegation led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also visited China.
The ambassador said the Communist Party of China and the BNP enhanced institutional exchanges and deepened mutual learning on state governance during the visit.
MoFA Director General Nore-Alam and ERD Joint Secretary Kawshar Jahan highly praised the achievements of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Han Kun from the Embassy highlighted ongoing cooperation between the business communities of the two countries and positively assessed the progress made in investment, trade, and industrial cooperation.
Two former trainees also shared their experiences and insights gained during their visits to China.
This year, China will organise 23 bilateral and 30 multilateral training programmes in China, providing training opportunities for nearly 600 Bangladeshi participants.
The programmes will cover a wide range of sectors, including telecommunications and information technology, renewable energy, cross-border e-commerce, road transportation, agriculture, tourism, and education.
“I hope that through these training and exchange opportunities, participants will further enhance their professional capabilities, learn from China’s development experience, gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, and strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation,” Ambassador Yao said.
He expressed hope that the programmes would not only contribute to participants’ personal and professional growth, but also strengthen the foundation for future exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
The ambassador wished the training programmes success and said he hoped the participants would become ambassadors of friendship for China-Bangladesh relations and cooperation.

Bamyan’s first private radio station shut down in Afghanistan
By Fidel Rahmati
May 21, 2026
Radio Bamyan, the first private broadcaster in Bamyan province, has reportedly been shut down after authorities sealed its office.
Radio Bamyan, the first private media outlet in Bamyan province, has been shut down after Taliban intelligence forces raided and sealed its office, local sources said.
Taliban officials later confirmed the suspension, saying the station’s broadcasts were halted because its operating license had not been renewed.
According to local reports, Taliban intelligence personnel entered the station’s office in Bamyan city on Sunday and stopped its operations before sealing the premises.
Radio Bamyan was launched in 2003 on FM 89.7 and broadcast news, cultural, political and social programs for audiences across the province.
The station continued operating after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, but its broadcasts have now fully stopped after more than two decades of activity.
Taliban spokesman Saboor Siaghani confirmed the closure but did not provide further details about the alleged licensing issue.
Since returning to power, the Taliban have imposed broad restrictions on journalists and media organizations, including raids on newsrooms, detentions of reporters and suspension of local broadcasters.
International press freedom organizations have repeatedly warned that shrinking media space, censorship and intimidation have forced many Afghan journalists into exile or unemployment since 2021.
