Kabir admits ‘Rs 1,000cr BJP deal’ video real, TMC questions Modi

Apr 13, 2026

Kolkata: Humayun Kabir has acknowledged that the video released by Trinamool — purportedly showing him seeking Rs 1,000 crore from BJP and calling Muslims "gullible" — is authentic, but alleged it was selectively edited from a 51-minute recording. The admission has handed Trinamool fresh ammunition against BJP after PM Narendra Modi's comment on Trinamool circulating AI-generated clips.

"The video is true, but only 19 minutes of a 51-minute conversation has been shown. I was speaking to two persons — one claimed to be a Sadhu from Siliguri, the other a journalist from Delhi. I have the full video and documents to support my claims," Kabir, founder of Aam Janata Unnayan Party, said on Saturday. He alleged that Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had orchestrated a sting operation, sending a man "disguised as a maharaj" and a Delhi-based journalist to entrap him.

"I will identify them and take legal action. I have six lawyers ready," he said, adding that the recording took place at his Berhampore flat on Dec 19, 2025. "There is no footage showing me meeting any BJP leader — not Modi, not Shah," he said. Kabir also trained his guns on CM Mamata Banerjee. "It was Mamata Banerjee who brought the BJP into Bengal. In three days, I will reveal everything — where Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee held meetings with the RSS and how they planned actions against Muslims," he alleged, adding that six lawyers were already appointed and a case would be filed in the High Court.

Trinamool was quick to use the admission to target BJP. "When Kabir himself has said the video is real, why did the Prime Minister call it AI-generated?" a senior party functionary asked.

CM Mamata Banerjee, addressing a rally in Bankura's Onda, said: "You are seeing how a Rs 1,000 crore deal has been made to divide Hindus and Muslims. The person in the video is saying it is real — how will this be covered up now?"

The 19-minute clip, titled ‘The Reality of HK', has not been independently verified.

The controversy has already claimed political casualties. AIMIM snapped its alliance with Kabir's AJUP within a day of the video surfacing, saying it "cannot associate with statements where the integrity of Muslims is questioned," and announced it would contest the Bengal elections independently.

‘The video is true, but only 19 minutes of a 51-minute conversation has been shown I have the full video and documents to support my claims,' said Kabir.

If you fight, we will fight’: Tehran warns US over Hormuz Strait blockade plan

April 13, 2026

------------

ISLAMABAD: “Good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said after marathon talks with Washington collapsed, as Tehran reacted sharply to a US plan to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a move that threatens to upend a fragile ceasefire and escalate the conflict.

Araqchi said Iran had negotiated in good faith but encountered “maximalism, shifting goalposts, and blockade” just inches from sealing an “Islamabad MoU,” adding: “Zero lessons earned.”

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump announced that the US Navy would begin blockading maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports following the failure of weekend talks in Islamabad — the first direct US-Iran engagement in more than a decade.

The US Central Command said the blockade would take effect at 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT) on Monday and would be enforced against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. It added that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for non-Iranian-bound vessels would not be impeded.

Trump, writing on social media, said Washington would target any vessel paying what he described as an “illegal toll” to Iran and would begin clearing mines allegedly laid by Iranian forces in the strategic waterway, through which roughly 20 percent of global energy supplies pass.

“No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas,” Trump said, warning that any Iranian attack on US or commercial vessels would be met with overwhelming force.

Iran’s response was swift. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that any military vessels approaching the Strait would be treated as a breach of the ceasefire and dealt with “harshly and decisively,” underscoring the risk of further escalation.

Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf dismissed Trump’s threats, saying they would have no effect on Tehran’s position.

“If you fight, we will fight, and if you come forward with logic, we will deal with logic,” Qalibaf said in remarks carried by state media.

The talks in Islamabad followed a ceasefire announced earlier in the week after six weeks of fighting that has killed thousands, rattled global markets and driven oil prices above $100 per barrel. The Strait of Hormuz has remained a central flashpoint, with Iran previously restricting traffic through the narrow shipping lane.

US Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, said no agreement had been reached, calling the outcome “bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States.”

Despite the breakdown, Trump signaled that diplomacy may continue, describing the talks as “very friendly” and saying he believed Iran would return to the negotiating table.

“I do believe they’re going to come to the table on this,” he said in an interview with Fox News.

A US official said key sticking points included Washington’s demand for a complete halt to uranium enrichment, dismantling of enrichment facilities and the transfer of highly enriched uranium, as well as ending Iranian support for regional groups and ensuring full access to the Strait.

Qalibaf, however, blamed Washington for the impasse, saying Iran had put forward “forward-looking initiatives” but had failed to gain US trust. President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reiterated that Tehran seeks a “balanced and fair agreement.”

“If the United States returns to the framework of international law, reaching an agreement is not far off,” he said, according to state media.

Iranian outlets, including the semi-official Tasnim news agency, said “excessive” US demands had hindered progress, though some issues were reportedly agreed upon, with the Strait and Tehran’s nuclear program remaining the main obstacles.

Amid the tensions, shipping data showed three fully laden supertankers transited the Strait on Saturday, appearing to be the first vessels to exit the Gulf since the ceasefire — a tentative sign that maritime traffic had yet to be fully disrupted despite the looming blockade.

-------------

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Sunday summoned Iraq’s ambassador to the Kingdom Safia Taleb Al-Suhail over continued attacks and threats targeting Gulf states through drones launched from Iraqi territory.

During the handover of the protest memorandum to Al-Suhail, Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Saud Al-Sati emphasized the Kingdom’s condemnation of the attacks originating from Iraqi territory against the Kingdom and Gulf countries and affirmed the importance of Iraq dealing responsibly with such threats and attacks.

The Kingdom will take all necessary measures to defend its security and protect its territories, he added.

Iraq became caught in the middle of the US-Israeli war on Iran, with Iran-backed militias launching attacks on US bases and diplomatic facilities in the region as well as on critical energy infrastructure.

'We need real peace': Ukrainians have little faith in Easter truce

Sarah Rainsford

April 13, 2026

People line up to be doused in holy water by a priest in Kharkiv

------------

An Orthodox Easter truce agreed by Russia and Ukraine came into force on Saturday afternoon but 38 minutes later we heard air raid sirens in Kharkiv, north-eastern Ukraine.

By mid-morning on Easter Sunday, as families across the country attended church, Ukraine's military had recorded more than 2,000 ceasefire violations along the frontline, but no long-range missile or drone strikes. Russia's military gave a similar number.

The pause in fighting was supposed to last until Monday, to give people a much-needed rest more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

"Easter should be a time of safety, a time of peace," Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X shortly after the truce began, warning that Ukrainian forces would respond "strictly in kind" to any actions by Moscow.

But expectations and trust were very low.

Shortly before the 16:00 (13:00 GMT) start time for the truce, people brought baskets full of iced Easter cakes, painted eggs and sausage to St John the Theologian Church for a blessing.

They formed a line around the building to be doused with holy water by the parish priest.

The service is traditionally held just before midnight, with a procession around the church, but it was mid-afternoon this year because of the curfew.

"Do you believe them?" Fr Viktor wanted to know, when I asked about the significance of a Russian ceasefire.

St John's church itself was damaged at the start of the full-scale war and its windows on one side are still boarded up.

"Maybe there will be a pause," one parishioner called Larisa suggested. "But then Russia will only launch even more intense attacks. We've seen that before."

At a military training ground about 12 miles (19km) from the Russian border, members of Yasni Ochi strike UAV unit, part of Khartia corps, are spending the weekend testing new kit for the frontline.

They load new kamikaze drones with explosive, then practise diving at targets.

Their commander, Heorhiy, has ordered his troops to sit tight during the 32-hour ceasefire unless they're attacked. But he is sure that will happen.

"Russia says one thing, then does the other. So you have to be ready."

In the meantime, those on rotation have been dropping Easter cake and alcohol-free wine to their friends at the front by drone.

The village the unit uses for training was occupied in 2022 by Russian forces, then retaken by Ukraine.

The houses all around have been left as rubble.

No-one talks seriously about returning swathes of territory anymore, like the Donbas region just south of here.

But Heorhiy thinks Ukraine cannot afford to stop fighting until it can demand better terms in negotiations with Russia.

We need real peace talks," the commander says.

He has been buoyed up by the fact that war in the Middle East has seen countries turn to Ukraine for drone technology and expertise, both of which it can offer in abundance.

But the peace process, launched by the US, has since stalled, with President Donald Trump's envoys diverted to their own war with Iran.

Ukraine is still pushing for strong security guarantees, too, from its allies: specifically, what the US would do if Russia were to invade again in the future.

"It's not our choice. I don't like war, my guys don't like it. We used to have good civilian life," Heorhiy says - and I'm reminded that several of his unit were DJs before the war, part of an underground electronic music scene in Dnipro.

"Now we do what we need to do."

Heading back into Kharkiv, we take the ring road that's now being covered in netting. It's designed to trap and entangle Russian drones and stop them hitting the vehicles beneath.

But there's little to prevent missiles slamming into people's houses up here. Russia is so close, there is barely time for air defences to react.

In one suburb, several five-storey blocks of flats have been smashed to pieces. Others all around are boarded up and uninhabitable.

Last month, 11 people were killed when a missile hit in the early hours and wiped out an entire section of their building. Among the ruins, there's still one red rug pinned firmly to a living-room wall. On the ground nearby are photographs of two of the dead.

Their neighbour, Olha, describes how she sheltered in a corridor that night with her elderly mother.

She showed me video on her phone: the building opposite consumed by orange flames and her own flat in pieces.

No wonder Olha is desperate for any let-up in the fighting,

"This truce is only 1.5 days. But at least we can rest a bit, because here, you expect to die every second," she says. "We really want peace. Not for 1.5 days. For good."

In quiet, angry tears she tells me the last sliver of the Donetsk region still in Ukrainian hands is not worth the lives of so many people.

"There were children killed in that strike, wonderful people. Will it ever stop?" she wants to know.

Zelensky has offered to make this temporary truce, however flawed, into a lasting ceasefire, and then continue talks with Russia towards securing a proper peace.

But the Kremlin has already rejected that, saying its attacks will resume in full on Monday.

American Muslims Don’t Need to Defend Our Existence

APRIL 13, 2026

Photograph Source: Ted Eytan – CC BY-SA 2.0

-----------

The journey of my prayer rug reflects my own as a Muslim American. It has seen a lot, and despite its fraying fringes, remains resilient as ever.

Praying five times each day is one of the pillars of Islam. Each prayer includes recitations from the Qur’an.

My blue and gold prayer rug was a childhood gift from my late maternal grandmother, or nana as we called her, who brought it from Saudi Arabia. I still remember praying by her side. She taught me to read the Qur’an and would lovingly correct my Arabic.

Wherever I’ve been, I’ve prayed on that same rug. In a world that often leaves me feeling unmoored, my faith anchors me. It’s a sentiment so many Muslims and other people of faith in this country share.

The right to freely practice my religion is enshrined in our Constitution under the First Amendment. It protects this right for allpeople to practice any faith, or none at all, and prohibits our government from establishing an official religion.

You would think members of Congress, who swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution, would know this. Yet many continue to attack the faith of millions of Muslim Americans, including their own constituents.

Some have invoked “sharia” — which refers to the various rules Muslims follow, like prayer guidance — to preposterously claim that Muslims are trying to “replace” the Constitution.  Islamic learning institutions — like the summer school where I first learned the Arabic alphabet in my youth — are a growing target.

When the Islamic Academy in Alabama tried to relocate from the Birmingham suburb of Homewood to a larger building in nearby Hoover, a local Islamophobic campaign ensued, resulting in Hoover city officials voting against the relocation late last year. In response, Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said, “Islamic Indoctrination Centers have NO PLACE in our state.”

Would Tuberville have denigrated Catholic schools, Protestant youth groups, or Jewish summer camps this way?

Unfortunately, Tuberville is hardly alone. Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) recently compared Muslims to dogs and has labeled Muslim officials like Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani “terrorists.”

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) declared this March that “Muslims don’t belong in American society.” That’s not only hateful but ignorant. Among the first Muslims in the U.S. were enslaved West Africans who helped build this country. Despite significant obstacles, many preserved their Islamic faith and were guided by it in their struggle for liberation.

Since then, Fine and Ogles have only doubled down on their bigotry. In a March post on X, Fine wrote “We need more Islamophobia, not less,” while Ogles said Muslims “all have to go back.” Virtually no high profile Republicans have condemned this hateful rhetoric.

This racist fearmongering is a tried and true tactic — a cheap deflection from these leaders’ own failure to respond to their constituents’ actual needs, like affordable housing, health care, and groceries.

But it’s also more than that. The more Muslims are dehumanized, the easier it is for politicians to justify their endless, costly, and immoral wars on Muslim-majority countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Iran, and the genocide in Gaza. Like clockwork, each new bombing abroad fuels more anti-Muslim racism and violence against my community at home.

Already, Islamophobic social media posts have proliferated since the war on Iran began. The NYPD recently foiled an assassination attempt against Muslim and Palestinian American activist Nerdeen Kiswani. And according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, anti-Muslim discrimination complaints in the U.S. have reached record highs.

Muslims don’t need to defend our existence. It’s the racists and religious bigots who don’t belong in Congress — or anywhere in a free society.

But while hateful politicians spew division, I see more people in this country refusing to do the same. Instead, multi-faith coalitions are uniting around real threats: war, billionaires controlling our economy, the climate emergency, and the alarming erosion of the constitutional rights we hold so dear, including the freedom of religion.

Terrorism: US commends FG over convictions of 386 Islamist militants

April 12, 2026

The United States has commended the Nigerian government for expediting terrorism-related trials, following the conviction of hundreds of suspects in a special court process in Abuja.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, the U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, praised the development, describing it as a significant step toward justice and accountability.

“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes,” the statement read.

“We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts, and we recognize this as an important step toward accountability and justice.”

The U.S. official emphasised the importance of efficient and transparent judicial processes in tackling insecurity and strengthening public confidence in the legal system.

“We believe that timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions,” the statement added.

“Upholding the rule of law remains essential to ensuring the safety, stability, and long-term security of all Nigerians, and we support continued efforts to strengthen judicial efficiency and fairness across the country.”

The commendation follows remarks by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who disclosed on Friday that 386 terrorism suspects were convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja during a four-day mass trial.

According to Fagbemi, the convicts were among 508 defendants prosecuted by his office, representing a conviction rate of about two-thirds.

The trials were conducted as part of efforts by the federal government to address the backlog of terrorism cases and accelerate justice delivery in matters relating to national security.

Indonesia Bonds Under Pressure as US–Iran Tensions Push Yields Up

Muhammad Ghafur Fadillah

 April 13, 2026

Jakarta. Indonesia’s government bond market is bracing for renewed pressure as escalating geopolitical tensions, triggered by the collapse of Iran–US peace talks, push global risk premiums higher and dampen appetite for emerging-market assets.

The fallout is expected to weigh on government bonds (SBN), with yields likely trending upward as investors demand higher compensation amid rising uncertainty.

Economist Yusuf Rendy Manilet of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia said the key issue is not merely the failed negotiations, but the surge in global uncertainty that could persist in the near term.

“In this kind of environment, it is normal for investors to demand higher yields. So it is unlikely that SBN yields will decline in the short term,” Yusuf told B-Universe.

He explained that heightened geopolitical risks tend to trigger a shift toward safe-haven assets such as US Treasuries, while reducing exposure to emerging markets like Indonesia.

This dynamic could have layered impacts, ranging from potential capital outflows and rupiah pressure to rising energy prices that may fuel inflation expectations.

Yusuf estimates that the 10-year SBN yield, currently around 6.6%, could climb to between 6.65% and 6.80% in the near term.

Still, he noted that the increase remains manageable, supported by relatively solid domestic fundamentals and Bank Indonesia’s active role in maintaining financial market stability.

The pressure, however, is unlikely to be evenly distributed across the yield curve. Investors are becoming more selective, favoring short- to medium-term tenors, which are seen as more resilient.

“Longer tenors are expected to face greater pressure due to higher duration risk amid global volatility,” he said.

Despite external headwinds, demand for SBN is expected to hold, underpinned by domestic investors and Bank Indonesia’s presence in the market.

However, the government may need to accept higher yields as a consequence of elevated global uncertainty.

“With these dynamics, the domestic bond market is expected to remain in an adjustment phase in the short term, as investors stay highly sensitive to geopolitical developments and the direction of global monetary policy,” Yusuf concluded.

‘Attempts to silence Bangalees won’t succeed’

13 APRIL 2026

A message of cultural resilience marked Chhayanaut’s announcement of its Pahela Baishakh 1433 celebrations yesterday, as the organisation reaffirmed its commitment to continue its traditional musical welcome, more popularly known as “Barshabaran” at Ramna Batamul.

A hall full of students sat in attentive silence at Chhayanaut’s cultural centre in Dhanmondi as the press conference opened with “Sedin Aar Koto Durey”, a song by Salil Chowdhury that has long carried the weight of resistance and longing.

“We want to practise culture without obstruction,” said Dr Sarwar Ali, president of Chhayanaut, about preparing this year’s programme at Ramna Batamul against a backdrop of uncertainty and recent past attacks on cultural institutions.

Referring to recent incidents, including the 2025 attacks on Chhayanaut, Udichi, and other cultural spaces and media houses, he said, “We have faced planned repression since the nation’s inception. This is not new to us. No matter what, we will keep singing because we want to sing freely. The state and society must stand aligned.”

General Secretary Laisa Ahmed Lisa echoed a similar sentiment, describing the Bangla New Year as a moment of collective renewal. li

Inspired by the line “Chitto Jetha Bhoyshunno, Uccho Jetha Shir” from Rabindranath Tagore, organisers framed this year’s theme around fearlessness and dignity.

Vice-President Partha Tanvir Naved addressed safety concerns. “Security measures will be in place. We expect cooperation from law enforcement and the administration,” he said.

Vice-President Khairul Anam Shakil recognises the programme within a longer history of resistance. “Bangalees have long struggled to establish their identity. Attempts to silence them have never succeeded and will not succeed now,” he said, referring to past attacks, including the 2001 Ramna Batamul bombing.

The customary “Barshabaran” programme will begin at 6:15am at Ramna Park, continuing a practice that dates back to 1967, when Chhayanaut first helped shape Pahela Baishakh as a national cultural observance. Since then, the programme has come to embody Bangalee identity across diverse social borders.

This year, the two-hour programme will feature eight choral performances, 14 solo songs, and two recitations, with around 200 performers -- inculcating themes of nature, patriotism, and folk traditions, alongside tributes to Salil Chowdhury and composer Matlub Ali.

The event will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television and Deepto TV, and streamed on platforms including Prothom Alo, bdnews24.com, and Chhayanaut’s official digital channels.

The press conference concluded with the song “Boishak Mase Aiso Bondhu,” returning to a note of invitation.

170 Muslim children from Bihar taken off train in Katni over suspicion of trafficking

April 12, 2026

Police and civic authorities made around 170 Muslim children disembark from a train at Katni station in Madhya Pradesh late Saturday night following a tip-off about possible human trafficking.

The children, mostly minors from Bihar, were travelling on the Patna-Pune Express train. They were being taken to Maharashtra.

According to RPF Inspector Virendra Singh, police had received a tip-off that 167 Muslim children were travelling in the train under suspicious circumstances.

He said a joint team of the RPF, GRP, and the women and child development department inspected the train at Katni station and safely brought down all the children, along with some persons who claimed they were taking them to Maharashtra.

Police said that one such person, named Saddam Hussain, claimed that he had permission from the children’s parents and was taking them to a madrasa in Latur, Maharashtra, for education.

Saddam, however, could not produce the required documents to support his claim, the police said.

The police and administrative officials have kept all the children in safe accommodation in Katni. Further investigations is underway.

‘What were you thinking?’: Mehbooba Mufti targets Omar govt in J-K amid campaign to reclaim lost ground

Bashaarat Masood

Apr 12, 2026

Following its rout in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has started a campaign to connect with the grassroots, with party president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti helming the effort.

On Sunday, Mufti addressed the second public rally of the campaign in south Kashmir’s Pulwama, a PDP stronghold represented by Waheed Para, one of the party’s three members in the 90-seat Assembly.

In her address, the PDP chief took on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of “failing the people” of Jammu and Kashmir. “What were you thinking? That the youth will be safeguarded, they will get employment, and the youth languishing in jails will be freed or at least brought back to Kashmir from Tihar, Punjab and Haryana so that their poor families can meet them?” Mufti asked, adding, “When you people decided (to vote for the National Conference), we felt bad, but we were satisfied that your vote for one party may resolve the issues of the people.”

Mufti said the Chief Minister has preferred silence. “In Jammu, our non-Muslims decided to vote for the BJP because it is a Hindu party. The Muslims unanimously decided to vote for this party (the NC). They thought that the grandson of Sheikh (Mohammad Abdullah) Sahib would stand not only for the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also for the Muslims of India. He will talk not of the people of Jammu and Kashmir but the Muslims of India. But when the Waqf Bill came, he was silent. When Waqf property was seized, he (Omar Abdullah) didn’t allow a resolution in the Assembly. Recently, an order was issued that people associated with mosques should give their names, addresses and bank accounts, but he opted for silence. Today, nobody is ready to be part of the mosque committee because of fear. You voted for them to end this fear, but it has not,” she said.

“God forbid, we don’t want that he (Omar Abdullah) should behave with the non-Muslims the way the BJP is behaving with the Muslims. But we thought that since he is the Chief Minister of the only Muslim-majority state, he would safeguard our rights,” she added.

She claimed that when her party questions the CM about election promises, he retorts by linking the PDP with the BJP.

“When we ask about the 12 free gas cylinders, he says PDP-BJP; when we ask about 200 units of free electricity, he answers with PDP-BJP,” Mufti said, adding, “We formed a government with the BJP, not just for making a government, but for you. When we had to make a government, if Omar sahib had come to us, we would have made it. We made it (with the BJP) so that (Article) 370 is not touched. I released 12,000 youths. I got two AIIMS for Jammu and Kashmir when every state got only one. I got a delegation to talk to the Hurriyat…”

Sexual exploitation, push to convert to Islam at TCS Nashik? FIRs, arrests trigger massive probe

April 13, 2026

What started as a workplace complaint has now snowballed into a case that’s drawing attention across the country. Employees at Tata Consultancy Services’ BPO unit in Nashik have alleged sexual exploitation and attempts to force religious conversion, prompting a police probe and strong reactions from political leaders.

The issue isn’t new. Some complaints go back to 2022, but things escalated in March this year when a woman accused a colleague of maintaining a relationship with her on the false promise of marriage. That one complaint opened the floodgates. More employees came forward, FIRs multiplied, arrests followed, and a Special Investigation Team is now looking into allegations that appear to have gone on for years.

Nine FIRs, arrests; SIT formed to probe multi-year allegations

According to police, nine FIRs have been registered so far, with multiple arrests made in connection with the case. The accused include Shah Rukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Asif Ansari, and Danish Sheikh. They were produced in court and remanded to police custody.

The investigation, supervised by Nashik Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik, is being carried out by a Special Investigation Team led by ACP Crime Sandeep Mitke. Authorities said the allegations involve both sexual offences and claims of religious coercion within the workplace.

Police said the first FIR was registered in March 2026 following intelligence inputs, after which additional complaints surfaced.

Victims allege harassment, coercion and ignored complaints

Multiple women employees, along with at least one male colleague, have approached the Nashik City Police alleging a pattern of harassment by a group of senior staff, particularly team leads.

The complainants have alleged repeated inappropriate touching, obscene remarks, molestation and, in some cases, physical relationships established under false promises of marriage. Victims also said they were put under pressure to take part in religious practices, with some alleging attempts to push them towards conversion.

In a separate complaint, a male employee claimed he was forced to participate in religious activities against his wishes.

Several complainants said they had flagged the issue earlier with senior officials and the HR department, but nothing really moved. It was found during the investigation that the HR head, identified as Nida Khan, had allegedly not acted on these repeated complaints. Her statement was recorded on April 10, 2026. She has been asked to cooperate with the investigation going forward.

WhatsApp groups and targeting claims under scrutiny

Sources said some employees had allegedly formed WhatsApp groups where discussions took place about targeting vulnerable colleagues. Investigators are now looking into claims that junior staff, especially young Hindu women, were identified and approached using inducements or personal influence.

Police described the case as involving a group operating within the workplace, and are probing all angles to determine the extent of the alleged activities.

Authorities have also urged more victims to come forward and have shared a dedicated WhatsApp number for complaints.

TCS suspends employees, reiterates ‘zero tolerance’

Tata Consultancy Services said it has suspended employees under investigation and is cooperating fully with authorities.

“TCS has a long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form. We have always ensured the highest standards of safety and well-being of our employees at the workplace. As soon as we were made aware of the matter in Nashik, we took swift action. The employees under investigation have been suspended pending enquiry. The firm is cooperating with local law enforcement authorities and any further action will be based on the conclusion of this investigation,” a TCS spokesperson said.

The company reiterated that further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing probe.

Political reactions and protests intensify

The case has triggered protests outside the TCS facility in Nashik and drawn sharp political reactions.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the allegations as shocking and called the matter serious, while praising the police response.

State minister Nitesh Rane questioned the role of the HR department and called for a strong legal response, alleging that the incidents pointed to a broader pattern.

Investigation ongoing, no chargesheet yet

Police said the investigation is still underway and no chargesheet has been filed so far. The SIT is examining all complaints and evidence, including allegations related to sexual harassment, assault and religious coercion under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

The case has reignited debate over workplace safety in the IT sector, the vulnerability of young employees and the effectiveness of internal grievance systems in large organisations.

Delhi woman arrested for extorting Rs 17 lakh from UP cop, forcing him to convert under guise of marriage

Manish Sahu

Apr 12, 2026

The Baghpat police in Uttar Pradesh Saturday arrested a 30-year-old Delhi-based woman for allegedly pressuring a police constable to convert to Islam and extorting money from him in exchange for giving a statement in his favour in a rape case she filed against him in 2021. The 35-year-old constable, whose wife died some time ago, is currently posted in Baghpat.

The police said the constable alleged that the woman had asked him to convert to Islam, assuring him that she would testify in his favour in the rape case she had filed against him, marry him, and leave her husband.

However, despite his conversion, the woman neither married him nor withdrew from her existing marriage. Instead, she and her associates allegedly continued to extort money from him on the pretext of helping him in the case, with the total amount reaching Rs 17 lakh, the police said.

Acting on the constable’s complaint, the police registered a case against the woman and five others, including her husband and a cleric.

“We have arrested the woman accused of harassing the police constable, and efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused in the case,” said investigating officer of the case and circle officer, Baghpat, Rohan Chaurasia.

According to police, the complainant approached the station and lodged an FIR against the Delhi-based woman who allegedly forced him into marriage.

During questioning, the constable stated that he first came into contact with the woman through her husband while being posted in Ghaziabad. Over time, they began speaking regularly over the phone, following which he began visiting their residence regularly.

The police said that in 2021, following a dispute, the woman lodged an FIR in Delhi accusing the constable of rape, after which he was arrested and sent to jail. After securing his release, the constable allegedly re-established contact with the woman, who assured him that she would give a statement in his favour and marry him after leaving her husband, provided he converted to Islam. The Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against the constable in the case.

Attended religious gatherings, says constable

The constable further claimed that during this period, the woman, through her associates, extorted around Rs 17 lakh from him on the pretext of helping him in the case. He alleged that he converted to Islam and, under pressure from the woman, attended religious gatherings on multiple occasions, said the police.

“Despite complying with her demands, the woman neither gave a statement in his favour nor married him, and also failed to return the money,” a police officer said. “Aggrieved by this, the constable approached the police and lodged an FIR against the woman and others.”

The case has been filed on charges of criminal intimidation, Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs and extortion. The police also invoked the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act against the accused.

The officer added that the role of the woman’s husband in the alleged offences is also being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Karnataka Congress cracks whip over ‘conspiracy’ against party candidate in Davanagere South

Apr 12, 2026

Congress MLC Abdul Jabbar became the first casualty of the discord among minority community leaders over the choice of candidate for the Davanagere South Assembly constituency, to which elections were held on April 9. Speculations are rife that the chief minister’s political secretary and MLC Naseer Ahmed, too, will be asked to step down.

On Sunday, a week-and-a-half after Jabbar resigned as president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Minority Cell, Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar accepted his resignation. “…the Minority Cell committee formed under Abdul Jabbar’s leadership has been dissolved with immediate effect… steps would be taken to constitute a new committee soon,” a statement by Shivakumar said.

Though Jabbar, who hails from Davanagere, had resigned on April 3, the Congress appears to have kept it under wraps, fearing ramifications at Davanagere South constituency – where minority voters constitute more than a third of the electorate.

That minority leaders from the Congress were divided over the choice of candidate for Davanagere South was clear since March. Many leaders under Housing Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan had unsuccessfully lobbied to ensure a Muslim candidate from the segment. The party’s decision to field Samarth Mallikarjun, a political novice and grandson of former MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa, had even triggered protests from a section of Congress Muslim voters.

Jabbar, who was an aspirant from the constituency, was among those miffed by the decision. Along with this, Zameer barely campaigned in the segment. This had led to speculations that many leaders still harboured discontent over sidelining Muslim leaders in one of the very few constituencies where Muslims could get elected.

On Friday, the differences spilled out in the open as Congress legislators such as Saleem Ahmed and Rizwan Arshad held a news conference, accusing some minority leaders of the party of conspiring to sabotage Congress’s prospects in Davanagere South. Saleem Ahmed had accused “some senior Congress leaders” of working against the party. “Even though Samarth’s candidature was agreed by everyone, there was some confusion,” he said.

This did not sit well with Jabbar, who hit out against these leaders. The copy of his resignation letter was also released to the media. “Minority voters and minority office bearers are the backbone of our great Congress party, and (the community) certainly deserves better,” he said in the letter.

Later, speaking to media persons, he took a dig at other minority leaders. “Some people are using minority leaders to speak against us using the Congress office,” he told reporters Saturday. Jabbar said that he resigned, saddened by the allegations made by fellow community leaders.

More leaders under scanner?

Jabbar’s resignation, which, according to some reports, was based on directions by the Congress high command, has also resulted in speculations about the fate of other leaders, such as Khan and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s political secretary Naseer Ahmed. Party sources said that the two leaders, along with Jabbar, are under the scanner.

“There are complaints that the three were involved in anti-party activity, and there are allegations of them funding Social Democratic Party of India candidate. The Congress high command has talked to state leadership over the issue, and disciplinary action is likely,” Congress sources said. After Jabbar, Naseer Ahmed could be asked to put in his papers, while the fate of Minister Khan remained unclear, sources added.

The Congress had faced rebellion in Davanagere South soon after Mallikarjun was picked as the candidate. Local Congress leader Sadiq Pahilwan had filed his nomination papers as a rebel candidate and was cajoled by party leaders to withdraw his candidature.

J&K: 3 Kashmir varsities end MOUs with US NGO after ‘security concerns’

Apr 13, 2026

SRINAGAR: Three universities in Kashmir have terminated academic agreements with a US-based NGO, Kashmir Care Foundation (KCF), following internal reviews amid a buzz that intelligence agencies had flagged concerns over its activities.

University of Kashmir, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) issued orders cancelling MOUs with the Atlanta-based KCF. University of Kashmir and SKUAST-K did so on March 25 and IUST the following day.

Naseer Iqbal, University of Kashmir’s registrar, wrote to KCF president Altaf K Lal pointing out that the MoU was executed between on Dec 15, 2025, “with the objective of furthering educational initiatives through-workshops, seminars and other academic engagements in STEM (science, tech, engineering, mathematics) humanities and related fields”.

Officials said the terminations followed “adverse reports”, underscoring growing caution over collaborations with foreign institutions, especially in areas like technology, research, and data sharing.

“The MoU has been reviewed by competent authorities and it has been determined that continuation is not in the larger institutional interest of the university,” the registrar’s letter states.

Registrar Iqbal said KCF was run by Altaf, a Kashmiri based in the US, adding the MOU had a termination clause. “We decided on our own to terminate it as we thought it was not advisable (to continue) due to so many reasons,” Iqbal said, declining to go into specifics.

The three varsities made it clear that no money was exchanged, nor liabilities created, during the MOU period.

MoS External Affairs Margherita, Naqvi, Khurship attend commemoration ceremony in memory of Khamenei

Vikas Pathak

Apr 13, 2026

Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Sunday night attended a commemoration ceremony in the national capital organised in the memory of Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader of Iran, who was killed in a strike by the US and Israel 40 days ago, leading to the ongoing war between the US and Israel on the one hand and Iran on the other. Senior officials of the MEA are also learnt to have been present in the meeting.

Former Cabinet minister and BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi attended the meet, and so did former Cabinet minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid.

While Margherita did not speak at the meet, he spoke to reporters after the event was over. “Minister of State Shri Pabitra Margherita offered solemn respects on behalf of the Government of India at the 40th day (Chehelum) mourning ceremony organised by the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi. India–Iran relations are anchored in deep-rooted civilizational, cultural and people-to-people ties,” official spokesperson of the MEA Randhir Jaiswal posted on Sunday night.

Organised to mark the 40th day of the death of Khamenei, the event began at about 7 pm and went on till 11 pm. It began with a few speeches, with Naqvi, Khurshid and the Iranian ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, addressing the gathering. After that, there were religious ceremonies. Representatives of Jamat-e-Islami and also of the Sikh and Jain religions are learnt to have been present.

Khurshid is learnt to have said that Iran and India have strong civilisational ties, pointing to historical bonds between the two nations.

While addressing the huge gathering, Naqvi reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stand that “expansionist obsession is the enemy of a developmental mindset”. Naqvi, who was chairman of the Indo-Iran Parliamentary group in the UPA days, underlined that India is in favour of resolving the crisis through prudence, sensitivity, dialogue and coordination. “Temporary conflicts between nations inflict permanent wounds to humanity. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are stark examples,” Naqvi said.

While there was much discussion on PM Modi not putting out a single post on social media after the killing of Khamenei, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri went to the Iranian embassy days later to express his condolences.

The Iranian embassy posted on X lat on Sunday night, “The ceremony marking the 40th day since the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was held at the Iran Culture House in New Delhi, attended by senior officials of the Government of India, diplomats, political figures, leaders of various religions, Muslim Ulama, as well as thousands of people from across India.”

Gherao of judicial officials in Malda: NIA arrests ISF member, detains Congress candidate

by: Atri Mitra

Apr 13, 2026

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which took over the investigation into the gherao of seven judicial officials involved in the SIR adjudication process in Malda two weeks ago, made its first arrest in the case on Sunday. The central agency arrested a panchayat member belonging to the Indian Secular Front (ISF), Golam Rabbani, and detained the Congress candidate from Mothabari Assembly constituency Sayem Chowdhury, and his seven associates, sources said.

Chowdhury was picked up with his associates while he was campaigning in the Alinagar panchayat area on Sunday.

“We are questioning Chowdhury and verifying his involvement in the incident. If we get proper evidence against him, he will be arrested,” a senior NIA official said.

Earlier, West Bengal CID, which was probing the incident, had arrested 35 people, including AIMIM activist and lawyer Mofakkerul Islam.

Sources said that NIA arrested Rabbani after his name cropped up during the questioning of the AIMIM member.

According to the CID, Mofakkerul Islam is the mastermind of the case who allegedly incited people to gherao the BDO office and was seen giving an instigating speech just before the incident.

The NIA has sought the custody of all 35 people arrested by the CID.

Rabbani, meanwhile, is being brought to Kolkata.

“NIA officials think that from Rabbani they will be able to reach the other masterminds of the incident,” an NIA official said.

On April 1, people angry over the deletion of voters’ names from the electoral roll following the adjudication process gheraoed Kaliachowk-II BDO office. They did not let the seven judicial officials, including three women, leave the BDO office. As protesting villagers blocked the roads and highways, a police team managed to escort the judicial officials out of the office late in the night.

The next day, acting on the directions of the Supreme Court, the Election Commission handed over the investigation to the NIA.

In the meantime, West Bengal CID arrested 35 people. A team of 40 NIA officials, led by a DIG-rank officer, is currently camping in the state.

On Wednesday, the NIA registered FIRs – seven cases from the Mothabari Police Station and five from the Kalichak Police Station in Malda district.

Trump says he doesn’t care if Iran returns to negotiations

April 13, 2026

US President Donald Trump said he does not care if Iran comes back to negotiations with the United States after weekend talks in Pakistan failed to produce a deal.

“I don’t care if they come back or not. If they don’t come back, I'm fine,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, upon his return from Florida.

Oil tankers are steering clear of the Strait of Hormuz ahead of a US blockade later on Monday following failed peace talks between the US and Iran over the weekend, shipping data showed.

President Donald Trump said on Sunday the US Navy would start blockading the Strait of Hormuz, raising the stakes after marathon talks with Iran failed to reach a deal to end the war, jeopardizing a fragile two-week ceasefire.

US Central Command said US forces would begin implementing the blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports at 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT) on Monday.

It would be “enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” it said in a statement on X.

US forces would not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports, and additional information would be provided to commercial mariners through a formal notice prior to the start of the blockade, it said.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday that any military vessels attempting to approach the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a violation of the ceasefire and be dealt with harshly and decisively.

Pakistan-flagged tankers Shalamar and Khairpur entered the Gulf on Sunday, data from LSEG and Kpler showed.

The Aframax tanker Shalamar is heading to the United Arab Emirates on Monday to load Das crude while the Panamax-sized Khairpur is heading to Kuwait to load refined products, the data showed.

Pakistan National Shipping, which manages Shalamar, did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of office hours.

Liberia-flagged very large crude carrier (VLCC) Mombasa B, which also transited the strait earlier on Sunday, is ballasting in the Gulf, the data showed.

Malta-flagged VLCC Agios Fanourios I, which tried to pass through the strait on Sunday to enter the Gulf to load Iraqi Basra crude for Vietnam, has since turned back and is now anchored near the Gulf of Oman, the data showed. The tanker plans to head to Iraq.

Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, which manages the Agios Fanourios I, and CMB.TECH NV, the manager for the Mombasa B, did not respond to requests for comment outside office hours.

Despite the stalemate, three supertankers fully laden with oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, shipping data showed. They appeared to be the first vessels to exit the Gulf since the ceasefire deal was struck last week.

24 arrested in Kuwait over ‘financing of terror’

April 12, 2026

KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait has arrested 24 people as part of an investigation into the “financing of terrorist entities,” authorities said, including five former lawmakers.

Since Iran began attacking Kuwait and other Gulf states last month as part of the Middle East war, authorities across the region have moved against individuals and organizations suspected of links to or supporting Tehran.

In a statement, Kuwait’s Interior Ministry did not mention any particular country or organization, but said it had “thwarted a plot targeting the undermining of the homeland’s security and the financing of terrorist entities and organizations.”

“The State Security Agency succeeded in apprehending 24 citizens, one of whom had his citizenship revoked, in possession of financial sums linked to illicit activities,” the ministry added.

It said the financing was “part of an organized activity involving the collection of funds under religious pretexts ... in preparation for their transfer in accordance with instructions from outside the country.”

Later, Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry named the 24 suspects on its domestic counterterrorism designation list, saying that their assets had been frozen and that they were subject to travel restrictions.

A security source had earlier confirmed that five former Kuwaiti lawmakers were among those detained.

In March, Kuwait arrested six people linked to Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group who it said were planning “assassinations.”

Israel PM formally appoints new Mossad chief

April 12, 2026

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday formally appointed a new chief of the country’s foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad.

Major General Roman Gofman, an army officer with no prior intelligence background, will assume the role on June 2, 2026, when the current Mossad director, David Barnea, completes his five-year term.

Netanyahu had selected Gofman for the position in December, with the appointment receiving formal approval on Sunday.

Born in Belarus in 1976, Gofman immigrated to Israel at the age of 14. He enlisted in the military’s armored corps in 1995 and went on to build a lengthy career in the army.

At the start of the Gaza war triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Gofman was a commander of the national infantry training center.

He was seriously wounded on October 7 in clashes with Hamas militants in Sderot, a city in southern Israel near the Gaza border.

Gofman later joined Netanyahu’s office in April 2024 and is seen as being supportive of Netanyahu’s nationalist ideas.

Though he does not wear a yarmulke as practicing religious Jews do, Gofman studied at the Ely yeshiva, a Jewish religious school located in a settlement of the occupied West Bank and known for its right-wing religious Zionist position.

Considered one of the best intelligence services in the world, the Mossad escaped blame for the failure to foresee the October 7 attack because the Palestinian territories have traditionally fallen outside of its field of operations.

But the chiefs of the domestic and military intelligence bodies, the Shin Bet and Aman respectively, resigned after acknowledging their responsibility for the fiasco.

The Mossad distinguished itself in the eyes of Israelis in the multi-front war since October 7 by contributing to several assassinations of top regional leaders and militants.

Lebanon PM says working to achieve Israeli troop withdrawal

April 12, 2026

BEIRUT: Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in a televised address Sunday that he was working to stop the Israel-Hezbollah war, even as Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu told troops in south Lebanon that the fight there was far from over.

The health ministry said at least six people were killed Sunday in the south, including a Red Cross paramedic, after “the Israeli enemy directly targeted a Lebanese Red Cross ambulance team.”

And the United Nations peacekeeping force UNIFIL said an Israeli tank rammed its vehicles on two occasions, “in one case causing significant damage.”

Israel says the fragile temporary ceasefire in the wider Middle East war does not apply to its battle with Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, and has kept up its attacks on the country as the militants fight back.

“We will continue to work to stop this war, to ensure the Israeli withdrawal from all our lands,” Salam said in a speech on the eve of the anniversary of the start to the country’s 1975-1990 civil war.

“We are continuing our efforts... to negotiate to stop the war,” he added, ahead of planned talks on Tuesday in Washington between Lebanese, Israeli and US officials.

Lebanon was pulled into the Middle East conflict when Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel after US-Israeli strikes killed Iran’s supreme leader. Israel has responded with massive strikes and a ground invasion.

Netanyahu said Sunday that Israeli forces had eliminated the threat of an invasion by Hezbollah militants during a visit to troops in southern Lebanon, but added: “There is still more to do, and we are doing it.”

 ‘Accountability’

“The war continues, including within the security zone in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said in a video released by his office, which showed him wearing a flak jacket and surrounded by masked soldiers.

Israeli officials have repeatedly said that Israel wants to establish a “security zone” in south Lebanon to help prevent Hezbollah attacks.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported Israeli attacks on more than 30 locations in the south on Sunday, with additional strikes on the adjacent West Bekaa area.

The health ministry raised the war’s overall toll to 2,055 dead, including 165 children and at least 87 health workers, since March 2.

It also said an Israeli strike on Qana killed five people, including three women, and wounded 25 others.

An AFP photographer in the southern town saw significant destruction as an excavator worked to clear debris and first responders carried a body out from under the rubble.

The health ministry vowed to “pursue international legal action to ensure accountability for these crimes” against emergency workers after the Red Cross paramedic was killed in a separate strike, a day after three other rescuers died in Israeli attacks.

Israel’s military has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of using ambulances for military ends.

‘Moral obligation’

In south Lebanon’s Bazuriyeh, Hassan Berro, a rescue worker from the Risala Scout association — which is affiliated with the Hezbollah-allied Amal movement — said: “Our emergency center was hit and completely destroyed, along with all its contents, including beds and medical equipment.”

The AFP photographer saw windows shattered and debris covering several hospital beds in the building, where walls and ceilings were also damaged.

On Sunday, the Israeli army also accused Hezbollah of using a hospital compound in south Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil “for military purposes.”

Hezbollah said it launched attacks on Israeli targets across the border and inside Lebanon, including against troops in Bint Jbeil, where the NNA reported heavy fighting.

Pope Leo XIV, who visited Lebanon late last year, expressed his closeness to the Lebanese people on Sunday and said there was a “moral obligation to protect the civilian population from the atrocious effects of war.”

Commenting on the talks planned for next week, Netanyahu had said on Saturday that “we want the dismantling of Hezbollah’s weapons, and we want a real peace agreement that will last for generations.”

UAE sends 53 tonnes of medical equipment to Gaza

April 12, 2026

LONDON: The UAE on Sunday delivered 53 tonnes of medical equipment and supplies to support Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The country was among the first to respond to the humanitarian crisis in the region, launching Operation Chivalrous Knight. The latest consignment, carried by eight trucks, was part of the third phase of the program.

The equipment will be used to support the UAE’s field hospital in Rafah and medical center in Khan Younis, the Emirates News Agency reported.

The aid effort reflects the country’s commitment to providing humanitarian support to those in need in times of crisis, it said.

Nearly 2 million Palestinians have been displaced and more than 70,000 killed since the start of the war, which has also seen the destruction of vital infrastructure, including health and education facilities.

International bodies have accused Israel of committing genocide and war crimes in the region.

UN force in Lebanon says Israeli tank rammed its vehicles in south

April 12, 2026

BEIRUT: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that an Israeli tank rammed peacekeeping vehicles on Sunday in the country’s south where Israel and Hezbollah have been at war since last month.

“On two occasions today, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers rammed UNIFIL vehicles with a Merkava tank, in one case causing significant damage,” the statement said, adding that the Israeli soldiers had blocked a road in south Lebanon’s Bayada “that is used to access UNIFIL positions.”

“Over the past week, Israeli soldiers have fired ‘warning shots’ in the area, striking and damaging clearly identifiable UNIFIL vehicles. In one case, a ‘warning shot’ landed a meter away from a peacekeeper who had dismounted his vehicle,” the statement added.

“Israeli soldiers have continually blocked peacekeepers’ movements on this road in recent days, in addition to denials of freedom of movement recorded in other areas,” it said.

UNIFIL patrols in south Lebanon near the Israeli border where Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting since last month after the Iran-backed militant group drew Lebanon into the Middle East war with rocket fire at Israel in support of its backer Iran.

Three Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in south Lebanon last month, with a preliminary UN investigation finding one was killed by Israeli tank fire, while the two others were killed by an improvised explosive device likely planted by Hezbollah.

Other UNIFIL peacekeepers have also been wounded since the war erupted.

This month, “Israeli soldiers have also destroyed force protection cameras” in UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqura “and five other positions,” the statement said.

On Saturday, Israeli soldiers “spray-painted the windows of the headquarters’ pedestrian access gate, denying visibility to the external perimeter,” it added.

UNIFIL said the actions were inconsistent with the “requirement to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers” and their freedom of movement.

United Nations peacekeepers have served as a buffer between Lebanon and Israel for decades, but their mandate concludes at the end of this year.

Saudi employment contracts compliance target rises on Qiwa platform

April 12, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has announced updated compliance requirements for documenting employment contracts through the Qiwa platform, raising the target compliance rate to 85 percent from April 30.

A second phase will increase the compliance rate to 90 percent by June 30, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

The ministry said the compliance rate was calculated by comparing documented contracts with the total number of employee contracts at each establishment, enabling employers to monitor performance clearly and accurately.

The update is part of the ministry’s efforts to strengthen compliance with labor regulations, enhance transparency, and safeguard the rights of all parties to the contract.

The ministry urged all establishments to review undocumented contracts and complete documentation through the Qiwa platform to meet the required compliance rate and avoid any disruptions to services linked to compliance indicators.

Saudi Heritage Commission records 20 violations at cultural sites in March

April 12, 2026

JEDDAH: The Heritage Commission recorded 20 violations of the Antiquities and Urban Heritage Law at cultural sites and on social media platforms in March.

The violations were detected in Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Asir, Tabuk, Qassim and Jouf.

They included encroaching on protective fencing at an archeological site and using heavy equipment, publishing inaccurate information about archeological locations on social media, and trespassing on sites through excavation, damage and removal.

Other offenses involved conducting archaeological surveys and sharing related content without a license, as well as possessing cultural artifacts and displaying them on online platforms without obtaining the required permits.

The commission said violators were referred to the relevant authorities to complete the necessary legal procedures.

Members of the public can report violations through the Archeological Reporting Service or by calling the National Security Operations Center on 911.

According to the Heritage Commission, the National Register of Antiquities serves as the Kingdom’s official digital repository for cataloguing and documenting cultural heritage sites and historical monuments.

The register consolidates archeological data through integrated databases, digital archeological maps, and a comprehensive archive of drawings, photographs and technical reports.

The initiative aims to enhance the management, preservation and protection of heritage sites through advanced digital mapping technologies.

It also seeks to establish a unified and integrated spatial database covering cultural heritage locations across the Kingdom.

The register documents all fieldwork and activities conducted at archeological sites, while systematically archiving related photographs and official documentation.

In addition, it supports the development of applied digital solutions designed to improve sector management and strengthen decision-making processes.

Access to the platform is provided in accordance with specific permissions and regulatory frameworks to ensure the responsible use of heritage information.

Saudi Arabia’s Project Masam continues demining efforts in Yemen

April 12, 2026

RIYADH: Members of Saudi Arabia’s Project Masam have removed 2,639 landmines and explosive remnants of war from various regions of Yemen so far in April, continuing efforts to reduce explosive threats and protect civilians in affected areas.

The total included 2,502 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 116 anti-tank mines, 19 anti-personnel mines, and two improvised explosive devices, according to a recent report.

During the same period, Project Masam teams cleared 500,794 sq. meters of land, making it safe for civilian use.

Project Masam, overseen by the Saudi aid agency KSrelief, continues to remove deadly devices laid in Yemen by the Houthis. These explosives pose a threat to civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.

Last week, the project’s special teams destroyed 1,329 items of unexploded ordnance, 67 anti-tank mines, 10 anti-personnel mines, and two improvised explosive devices.

The demining operations took place in Marib, Aden, Al-Jawf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hajjah, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sana’a, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale and Saada.

Since the initiative began operations in mid-2018, Project Masam teams have cleared 553,828 explosive threats in Yemen and made 78,495,384 sq. meters of land safe, enabling displaced families to return, farmers to access their land, and humanitarian organizations to operate more safely.

The initiative also trains local demining engineers and equips them with modern tools. Additionally, it provides support to Yemenis injured by these devices.

“Every mine removed is a life potentially saved, a home reclaimed, a future restored,” said Ousama Al-Gosaibi, the project’s managing director. “Demining is not just about removing explosives; it is about restoring hope, stability, and economic recovery,”

Since the conflict began, about 5 million people have been displaced in Yemen, many because of landmines. Masam teams work to clear villages, roads, and schools, enabling the safe movement of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

KSrelief has implemented mine-clearance projects in Yemen, Azerbaijan, and Iraq at a cost of more than $294 million, the Saudi Presss Agency reported last week.

Project Masam in Yemen accounts for the lion’s share of the funding at more than $290 million. Similar projects are also underway in Iraq, where KSrelief leads a $1 million funding memorandum to support mine survey and clearance operations in several areas. In Azerbaijan, the agency is supporting a $3 million mine-clearance project as part of a broader humanitarian initiative.

Russian Orthodox Christian leader sends warning from Earth to space

12 Apr, 2026

Scientific knowledge should go hand-in-hand with religious faith for humankind to avoid a potential catastrophe, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has said while speaking to the Russian cosmonauts working at the International Space Station (ISS).

The Patriarch delivered his address to the cosmonauts via video link on Sunday as Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter. This year, one of the most revered Orthodox holidays coincides with Cosmonautics Day, which marks the anniversary of the first crewed space flight made by Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961.

Speaking to the cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergey Mikayev, and Andrey Fedyaev, the Patriarch spoke about the importance of maintaining a balance between scientific and technical advances and religious faith, arguing the latter is key to keeping the potentially dangerous progress at bay.

“To prevent scientific and technological progress from leading humanity to catastrophe – and this could happen, and everyone understands how advances in science could be used to destroy humankind – to prevent this from ever happening, scientific knowledge, in my view, must be combined with faith in God,” Kirill stated.

“This is possible, since faith in God strengthens a person’s understanding of their own limitations. This is crucial – the recognition of what you can do and what you cannot. And another important point: faith in God affirms the need to strengthen and develop a moral sense within a person,” he added. “Where there is a moral sense, there is conscience. And without conscience, a person cannot live. And the planet will not be able to live – everything will simply be destroyed.”

UK could adopt EU single market rules under new legislation

April 13, 2026

Joe Pike

Sir Keir Starmer is planning a law which will mean that the UK government can adopt EU single market rules, without a normal parliamentary vote.

The measure is part of a bill aiming to align the UK with new European regulations in areas such as food standards.

A Labour source told the BBC: "It will lower costs for businesses and get rid of the Brexit paperwork tax that adds to the cost of the weekly shop."

The plans provoked strong opposition from the Conservatives and Reform UK.

The EU single market is an agreement which enables goods, service and people to move freely between members states, with countries applying many common rules and standards.

The UK and the EU are currently negotiating various deals, including one concerning food safety and standards for animal and plant health.

The parliamentary legislation to accompany some of them is expected later this year, and will include new powers allowing so-called "dynamic alignment" with Europe in areas where deals have already been signed.

This means that whenever Brussels approves a new rule MPs would only have limited opportunities to scrutinise them.

They would be put through using secondary legislation - which normally can't be amended, and is usually rubber stamped without a vote.

A government spokesperson said: "The bill will go through parliament in the normal way. Any new treaties or deals with the EU will also face parliamentary scrutiny, and Parliament will have a role in approving new EU laws required under those deals via secondary legislation."

"This will allow us to deliver a 'food & drink' trade deal worth £5.1bn a year, backing British jobs and slashing costly red tape for our farmers, producers and businesses."

While Labour has previously ruled out rejoining the EU single market or customs union, the new legislation could see the UK adopt some European regulations under British deals struck with the bloc.

"We're making a sovereign choice to agree deals to reduce trade barriers - where Parliament gets to have a say," a Labour source said.

But shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith said it would mean parliament is "reduced to a spectator while Brussels sets the terms".

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage vowed to oppose the legislation "every step of the way", calling the plans "a backdoor attempt to drag Britain back under European Union control."

Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson told the BBC's Westminster Hour: "We need a closer relationship with Europe, but we also need parliamentary democracy."

A UK-EU summit is expected later this year, after the two sides struck a deal last May on areas including fishing rights, trade, defence and energy.

Sir Keir said this year's summit "will not just ratify existing commitments made at last year's summit" but would be "more ambitious".

Orbán era swept away by Péter Magyar's Hungary election landslide

April 13, 2026

Paul Kirby

Viktor Orbán's 16 years in power is over and a system condemned as an "electoral autocracy" lies in tatters, defeated by a 45-year-old former party insider who convinced a majority of Hungarians to bring it to an end.

"We did it," Péter Magyar told a crowd of cheering supporters beside the River Danube, overlooking Budapest's magnificent parliament on the other side. "Together we overthrew the Hungarian regime."

Preliminary election results, based on more than 98% of counted votes, put his Tisza party on course for an extraordinary 138 seats, with Orbán's Fidesz on 55 and the far-right Our Homeland on six.

The landslide will not only allow Magyar to overturn Orbán's increasingly unpopular domestic policies, but reset Hungary's global relationships.

Orbán has been a close partner of both US President Donald Trump - earning an in-person appearance from US Vice-President JD Vance in the final week of the campaign - and Russia's Vladimir Putin, and he had become a big thorn in the side of the EU and Ukraine.

Magyar, on the other hand, stood on a platform of distancing Hungary from Russia in favour of more cordial ties with the EU and Ukraine.

For two years, Magyar took his burgeoning movement around villages, town squares and cities, rallying Hungarians who had had enough of the cronyism and corruption that had become endemic in Hungary over years.

"Never before in the history of democratic Hungary have so many people voted - and no single party has ever received such a strong mandate," he said on Sunday night, after a record 79.5% of the electorate turned out to vote.

Orbán's rule was built up through four successive election victories and sweeping majorities, but it became clear it was over in a matter of minutes.

As pro-Magyar supporters waited expectantly in the square on the Buda side of the Danube, the Tisza leader posted an extraordinary message on Facebook: "Viktor Orbán just called me on the phone and congratulated us on our victory."

There was barely time to digest what had just happened and only 30% of the vote had at that point been counted.

But moments later, Orbán himself appeared on a stage in a conference centre a mile down-river on the other side of the Danube, surrounded by his glum-looking Fidesz party colleagues.

"The result of the election is clear and painful," he told them, thanking the estimated 2.5 million Hungarians who stuck by him. "The days ahead of us are for us to heal our wounds."

Word began to spread among Magyar supporters, and at the nearby hotel that had become party HQ, Tisza activists hugged each other.

Magyar has promised to reverse Orbán-era changes to education and health, tackle corruption, restore the independence of the judiciary and kill off the widely loathed system of patronage known as NER that helped enrich party loyalists and squander state resources.

To make those changes to the constitution, he needed a two-thirds majority of 133 of the Hungarian parliament's 199 seats. Though the final results are not yet in, Tisza is on course for 138.

Magyar had been telling his supporters to prepare for a change of regime, and now they had it the parties truly started and the champagne flowed. Cars blared their horns across Budapest, women waving Hungarian flags through open sun roofs.

Many of those who backed Magyar are not natural supporters. For years he backed Orbán and now he has brought him down.

"He's someone you cannot be absolutely sure of," a lawyer called Ágnes told the BBC, "but we're at a point where we need to hope for something better, which he promises - and we truly hope his promises come true."

Another target in Magyar's sights is pro-Orbán state media. The M1 TV channel has until now slavishly toed the party line, along with what were once independent websites bought up over time by Fidesz allies.

Apparently uncertain what to do next, M1 rebroadcast a speech that Magyar had given just after the vote had finished. He had been hopeful of victory at the time, but by now the speech was out of date - he had already won.

Hungary has for some time felt like two different worlds running in tandem. In one, Orbán convinced his supporters and TV viewers they were heading for victory and four more years in power, backed up by opinion polls run by sympathetic pollsters, who continued to forecast a Fidesz victory as late as Sunday evening.

In the other world was Magyar, attracting big crowds wherever he went, backed up by respected pollsters reporting an increasing lead over his rival.

On Sunday night, those two worlds collided, and only one was real.

Magyar moved slowly through the crowds before taking to the stage, flanked by his party colleagues.

"You performed a miracle today, Hungary made history today," he told the audience, to chants of "Ria-Ria-Hungaria!"

He likened their electoral victory to the Hungarian revolution of 1848 and the uprising against Soviet occupation in 1956.

There was a time when Orbán himself spoke out against Soviet occupation, but he has become a close partner of Putin, and his justification of cheap Russian oil and petrol has made him a highly unpopular leader in the EU, which has tried to shake its reliance on Russian imports. Orbán has also reneged on an EU agreement to provide Ukraine with a €90bn (£79bn; $105bn) loan.

"Russians go home," Magyar supporters chanted, as the next Hungarian prime minister promised better relations with the EU.

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk was among the first of many European leaders to welcome Magyar's "glorious victory", adding in Hungarian "Ruszkik Haza" - Russians go home.

The Tisza leader pledged that his first trip abroad as prime minister would be to Warsaw - to reinforce Hungary's 1,000-year friendship with Poland.

He has also promised to travel to Brussels, where he aims to persuade the European Commission to unlock as much as €17bn in funds frozen over failures to tackle corruption and maintain independence in the judiciary.

Magyar has momentum after a marathon campaign that took in up to seven speeches a day and energised big crowds across the country.

His defeated rival sounded tired and jaded in his final campaign speech on Saturday night, as if he knew what was coming.

Orbán, now 62, has not resigned as party leader, and without him it is difficult to imagine what will happen to Fidesz.

For now he will continue to lead Hungary in a caretaker role, while he and his party lick their wounds.

Ukraine faces ‘huge’ rift as mobilization backlash grows – Zelensky aide

12 Apr, 2026

Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff Kirill Budanov has acknowledged that mobilization has created what he called a “huge” problem in Ukrainian society, exposing an increasing gap between Kiev’s calls to “fight until victory” and widespread draft evasion.

The Ukrainian military faces a severe manpower crisis driven by battlefield losses, draft evasion, and desertion. With few volunteers, Kiev increasingly relies on mandatory conscription – a highly divisive policy. Recruitment officers are often accused of heavy-handed tactics, and videos of so-called ‘busification’ – the forced detention of military-age men – circulate widely.

In an interview with Ukrinform earlier this week, Budanov conceded that society is split, though he stopped short of linking the divide to growing backlash over coercive mobilization.

“There are real problems... in our society. Because on the one hand, everyone says we need to fight until victory – and on the other, everyone is running away from mobilization. It's a huge, huge problem,” he said, acknowledging a contradiction in which both frontline troops and draft dodgers are lauded as “heroes.”

Budanov attempted to shame draft evaders but offered little advice on how to change public opinion on mobilization beyond telling society to “grow up.” If the trend continues, he claimed, Ukraine risks disappearing altogether: “What will happen when everyone becomes a draft dodger? Will Ukraine remain on the world political map? No, it won’t.”

Tens of thousands of draft-age men have been caught attempting to flee since 2022, Ukrainian border authorities reported, with dozens dying while trying to cross dangerous routes such as into neighboring Romania, a top destination for draft evaders. Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov recently revealed that around two million potential recruits are wanted for draft evasion, while some 200,000 troops have deserted.

Public backlash against mobilization has been mounting with videos showing civilians intervening in forced conscription. Earlier this month, three enforcement officers were stabbed, one fatally, while performing their duties.

A March survey cited by Slovo i Delo found roughly that 40% of Ukrainians would refuse military service, while only 16% said they would willingly serve.

In mid-2025, Gallup reported that 69% of Ukrainians favored a negotiated end to the conflict, a massive swing from 2022, when 73% were in favor of fighting until victory.

Attitudes in European host countries toward Ukrainian migrants have shifted. Poland, Germany, Ireland, Hungary, and Norway have begun tightening benefits, citing the number of migrants as straining national budgets.

Polish Defense Minister Władyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz suggested that draft-age Ukrainians should return home, while Estonian Interior Minister Lauris Laanemets even offered to track down and extradite Ukrainian draft dodgers.

Ukraine tried to attack Russian space base during Starlink rival launch – Roscosmos chief

12 Apr, 2026

Ukraine attempted to strike a Russian cosmodrome the same day as a rocket carrying satellites into orbit was taking off, Russia's space agency Roscosmos has confirmed. Speaking to Russian President Vladimir Putin, agency head General Dmitry Bakanov said that an attempted drone strike on the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the northern part of the country was foiled.

Bakanov, who has led Roscosmos since February 2025, made the comments on Saturday prior to Cosmonautics Day, which marks the first human journey into outer space, undertaken by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961.

Putin praised the March 23 launch as a key milestone for Russia’s space program, while Bakanov said that Ukraine had attempted to disrupt it. Plesetsk Cosmodrome lies about 800km north of Moscow and roughly 1,300km from the Ukrainian border.

”When they say space is beyond politics, our 'friends' did everything to prevent this launch,” he said. “That day, there were serious strike attempts on the cosmodrome, but the joint combat crews of Roscosmos enterprises and the Space Forces completed the mission.”

Bakanov did not provide details on the attack. The Russian Defense Ministry did not explicitly comment on the space base assault, but reported the downing of dozens of drones across the country around that date.

The Roscosmos chief was referring to the launch of a Soyuz-2.1b rocket, a medium-lift launch vehicle used as the workhorse in the Russian space industry. The rocket was carrying 16 satellites belonging to the Rassvet constellation, developed by Russian private aerospace firm Bureau 1440 – widely described as Moscow’s answer to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite system.

Russian officials have been suspicious of Starlink, which is not operating in the country, but is actively used by Ukrainian forces.

The Russian satellites operate as 5G base stations, interconnected via laser communication links and capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s. Their target orbital altitude is 800 km. Bureau 1440 is planning to deploy more than 900 low-orbit relays by 2035.

'I would hate to do it': Donald Trump weighs limited Iran strikes after negotiation talks collapse

Apr 13, 2026

US President Donald Trump is considering limited military strikes on Iran alongside a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after negotiations between Washington and Tehran collapsed in Pakistan, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials familiar with the matter.

The options were discussed on Sunday, hours after talks led by Vice President JD Vance broke down, reportedly over Iran’s refusal to abandon its nuclear programme, according to the report.

While a full-scale bombing campaign remains on the table, officials indicated it is less likely due to concerns over regional instability and Trump’s reluctance to enter a prolonged conflict. A temporary blockade, coupled with pressure on allies to assume a longer-term escort role in the strait, is also under consideration.

Trump, who spent Sunday at his Doral resort in Florida, signalled he remains open to diplomacy even as he escalated threats against Iran’s infrastructure. “I would hate to do it, but it’s their water, their desalinization plants, their electric-generating plants, which are very easy to hit,” Trump said on Fox News.

The White House declined to outline specific next steps. Spokeswoman Olivia Wales said, “The President has already ordered a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, ending the Iranian extortion, and wisely keeps all additional options on the table. Anyone who is telling The Wall Street Journal that they know what President Trump will do next is purely speculating.”

Trump maintained that Iran is willing to return to negotiations, with US officials saying an offer remains open. However, Reza Amiri Moghadam described the Islamabad talks as an initial step. “The Islamabad Talks laid the foundation for a diplomatic process that, if trust and will are strengthened, can create a sustainable framework for the interests of all parties.”

US officials outlined key conditions for any future agreement, including unrestricted access to the Strait of Hormuz, a complete halt to uranium enrichment, dismantling of nuclear facilities, surrender of enriched uranium stockpiles, and an end to support for regional proxy groups such as Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

Officials warned that each option carries risks. A renewed large-scale military campaign could strain US resources and trigger domestic backlash, while scaling down operations without curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions or control over the strait could be seen as a strategic win for Tehran.

Some analysts backed the blockade as the most viable option. Matthew Kroenig said, “We’ve seen this blockade strategy essentially work on Venezuela, and Trump has an opportunity to replicate it here. I think this is a way to really ramp up pressure on the regime and force them into some difficult dilemmas.”

However, US officials cautioned that enforcing a blockade in the narrow strait could expose naval forces to missile and drone attacks. Iran has remained defiant despite sanctions and recent US and Israeli strikes.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of global oil supplies, and any disruption has heightened concerns among US allies and global markets. Trump has acknowledged that fuel prices may remain high, posing political challenges ahead of midterm elections.

Economic advisers also flagged broader risks. Steve Moore said, “My advice to the White House folks I’ve spoken to is secure the strait at any cost and immediately as a matter of economic and national and global security. We have the power to protect the flow of international trade and must use it. Or the whole world economy could tumble into a global recession.”

Despite the tensions, some former officials see room for diplomacy. Fred Fleitz said, “I think Trump’s right, Iran is out of cards. This conflict has only been going on for a few weeks. It’s too early to know how this will come out, but I think it looks promising.”

CAIR Md. Welcomes Passage of Muslim, Jewish American Heritage Month Bill, Youth Charging Reform Act Among Legislative Priorities

April 12, 2026

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passage of the Muslim and Jewish American Heritage Month bill and the Youth Charging Reform Act, calling both measures meaningful steps toward building a safer, more inclusive and just Maryland. Both bills are among CAIR’s legislative priorities for the 2026 General Assembly session.

CAIR praised lawmakers for advancing these measures that both celebrate the state’s rich diversity and strengthen fairness within its justice system. Juvenile justice reform and countering Islamophobia are critical priorities for the civil rights organization.

The organization formally testified in support of both measures, working alongside coalition partners and community advocates to help secure their passage.

The Heritage Month bill establishes January as ‘Muslim American Heritage Month’ and May as ‘Jewish American Heritage Month’ with statewide recognition of the histories, cultures, and contributions of both communities to foster education, understanding, and mutual respect across Maryland.

In its testimony, CAIR emphasized that in its 2026 civil rights report, the National office documented an unprecedented number of anti-Muslim hate crimes, bias incidents and complaints. Many of its Jewish allies and partners in the advocacy space have also experienced antisemitism. Heritage months are an opportunity to humanize, celebrate and showcase Muslim and Jewish communities’ diversity and contributions.

The Youth Charging Reform Act represents a nearly 15-year long-awaited reform to Maryland’s juvenile justice system by reducing the number of offenses for which youth are automatically charged as adults. It expands the role of the juvenile court system, ensuring that more young people are given access to age-appropriate interventions and judicial discretion.

The passed version of the bill raises the age of when a youth could be tried as an adult for most crimes from 14 to 16. It specifies that cases of 16-year-olds charged with some offenses would first start in juvenile court.

The bill also incorporates measures CAIR supported that mostly prohibit youth charged as adults from being detained or confined in an adult prison. Alabama is the only state in the nation that automatically charges more youth as adults and sends them to adult court than Maryland.

“The passage of these bills is a victory for everyone who values dignity, equity and inclusion,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “As Islamophobia and antisemitism continue to rise, recognizing Muslim and Jewish American Heritage Months will help affirm the vital contributions of these communities, while youth justice reforms help make sure that our legal system treats young people with fairness and an opportunity for rehabilitation. While the work to maintain optimal reforms continues, CAIR joins legislators, bill sponsors, and community partners in celebrating this meaningful progress.”

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to continue to advance policies that promote justice, protect civil rights and uplift its communities.

Both bills now head to Governor Wes Moore’s desk for his signature. He is expected to sign both measures into law.

Iran talks were a major test for JD Vance. How did he do?

April 13, 2026

Daniel Bush

US Vice-President JD Vance remained tight-lipped as he returned from Islamabad on Sunday without a major breakthrough in high-stakes talks to end the war in Iran.

It was unclear how much, if any, progress was made in the highest-level diplomatic negotiations between the US and Iran in decades.

After 21 hours of back and forth in the Pakistani capital, Washington and Tehran remain far apart on key sticking points, including Iran's nuclear programme.

The two sides did not reach an agreement on what to do with the regime's enriched uranium, said a US official, who offered new details on the talks on the condition of anonymity.

Other unresolved issues include reopening the Strait of Hormuz without toll charges, a top priority for President Donald Trump, and securing a commitment from Iran to stop funding proxy groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, the US official said.

Vance gave Tehran a final offer in the talks on Saturday, the US official said, without specifying details.

The meeting apparently wasn't entirely fruitless, however. The talks were tough but friendly and the two sides exchanged productive proposals, according to the US official.

Vance left Islamabad convinced that Iran was overplaying its hand, but still hopeful that a deal could be reached, said the US official.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said an agreement with the US "will certainly be found" if "the American government abandons its totalitarianism and respects the rights of the Iranian nation".

Trump made his displeasure with the lack of progress clear on Sunday.

The president said in social media posts on Sunday that the US would blockade the strait "effective immediately" to pressure Iran to reach a deal.

The US military said it would stop all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports from Monday morning.

Iran and the US agreed to a temporary two-week ceasefire last week, although Trump said in his latest Truth Social posts that "at an appropriate moment, we are fully 'LOCKED AND LOADED,' and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran".

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran's parliament who led Tehran's delegation in Islamabad, sounded unfazed by Trump's sabre-rattling in a statement upon his return home.

According to reports by Iranian outlets, Ghalibaf addressed the US president, saying that "if you fight, we will fight, if you come forward with logic, we will respond with logic".

"We will not submit to any threat," he added. "If they test our resolve once more, we will teach them an even greater lesson."

The rhetoric underscores the massive gap between the two sides and the many remaining obstacles to reaching a full deal to end the war.

The negotiations represented a major test for 41-year-old Vance, who was picked by Trump to lead a US team that included special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Vance landed in Islamabad on Friday tasked with finding a way to wind down what has become the biggest foreign policy crisis of Trump's second term.

The now six-week war has engulfed the Middle East and sent global oil prices soaring.

It was a difficult mission for Vance, negotiating on behalf of a president who has offered mixed messaging on the war from the start.

Trump joked in early April that he would blame the vice-president if talks fell through and take the credit if both sides struck a deal to end the war.

While Vance has backed the war in public, he has reportedly expressed scepticism of the military campaign in private meetings with Trump.

The vice-president has in the past positioned himself as an anti-interventionist, a view broadly popular with Trump's core Maga base.

The talks were watched closely for signs of how Vance might handle foreign policy in a potential 2028 run for the White House.

While Vance was leading the talks in Islamabad, Trump watched a UFC fight in Miami, Florida, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, another rumoured 2028 contender and possible Vance rival.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking.

And a breakthrough seems as elusive as ever, with the two-week truce deadline looming this month.

After slamming Pope, Trump posts AI image of himself as Jesus

Apr 13, 2026

US President Donald Trump escalated his public clash with Pope Leo XIV on Sunday night, launching a sharp attack on the head of the Catholic Church and questioning his political judgement. Hours after the criticism, Trump posted an AI-generated image that portrayed him in a Jesus-like role performing a biblical-style miracle.

The digitally created picture showed him in flowing robes placing his hand on a sick man, with light radiating from his fingers as onlookers watched in reverence. The scene echoed the biblical account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.

Speaking to reporters and posting on social media, Trump said he was “not a fan” of the pontiff and claimed he was “not doing a very good job”, while also accusing him of being “very liberal” and overly sympathetic to what he called the “Radical Left”. He further argued that the Pope should focus on spiritual duties rather than political commentary, especially on issues involving the United States and foreign policy.

Surrounding imagery included American flags, military aircraft, eagles in flight and angelic figures in the sky, blending religious symbolism with patriotic motifs. The post quickly drew attention for its stark visual messaging, coming so soon after his public remarks against the Pope.

It is not the first time Trump has used AI-generated religious imagery; in May 2025 he previously shared a picture of himself dressed in full papal robes after joking that he would “like to be pope”, an image that also sparked widespread attention and debate online.

The exchange followed comments from Pope Leo XIV over the weekend that criticised what he described as a “delusion of omnipotence” driving global conflict, including tensions involving the United States and Iran.

Trump responded by calling the Pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy”, adding that he did not want a religious leader who appeared to justify adversaries acquiring nuclear weapons. He also suggested that Leo had been chosen partly because of his American background and reiterated that the Church should not interfere in political decisions taken by an elected government.

Milwaukee rally calls for release of Islamic Society leader detained by ICE

Darronté Matthews

April 12, 2026

MILWAUKEE - Supporters rallied in Milwaukee calling for the release of Salah Sarsour, the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, nearly two weeks after federal immigration agents detained him.

More than 100 people gathered Sunday, April 12, along North Lincoln Memorial Drive, demanding Sarsour’s release. Supporters say he has lived in Milwaukee for more than 30 years and has been a legal U.S. resident since the early 1990s.

Immigration agents arrested Sarsour on March 30. He is currently being held at a detention center in Indiana.

"He's not a threat to the United States," said Othman Atta, with the Islamic Society of Milwaukee.

Supporters described Sarsour as a community leader and called him a political prisoner.

What they're saying:

"He is someone who is being oppressed because he spoke truth to power," said Munjed Ahmad, a friend of Sarsour.

"Not only was my father kidnapped by ICE, but it feels like our American values were taken with him," said Adel Sarsour, Salah Sarsour’s son.

Milwaukee’s mayor, members of the Common Council and state leaders have also spoken out in support of Sarsour.

The Department of Homeland Security previously defended the arrest, calling Sarsour a "criminal" who is "suspected of funding terror organizations and lying on immigration forms."

Federal officials say Sarsour threw a Molotov cocktail at homes of Israeli armed forces before coming to the United States. The Islamic Society of Milwaukee disputes those claims.

"The accusations against him don't relate to what happened here in the United States," Atta said.

During the rally, Sarsour addressed supporters by phone.

"I am not breakable," said Salah Sarsour. "Maybe they held or arrested the body, but my soul, my heart, my strong belief - today with you in Milwaukee."

Dig deeper:

The Department of Homeland Security says Sarsour will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

"I will continue until my last breath to free Salah Sarsour," Ahmad said.

The Islamic Society of Milwaukee says only a federal court can order Sarsour’s release. The group says Sarsour’s legal team is exploring that option.

Officials say Sarsour’s immigration court date originally scheduled for Monday was removed for procedural reasons. A new date has not been announced.

Reza Safa to Newsmax: 'Supernatural Experience' Led to Conversion From Islam

Newsmax Wires

12 April 2026

Pastor Reza Safa, the author of "The Coming Fall of Islam in Iran," told Newsmax on Sunday that a "supernatural experience" with Jesus while living in Sweden led him to leave Islam and convert to Christianity, marking what he described as the beginning of a lifelong mission to spread the gospel.

"I prayed a simple prayer," Safa told Newsmax's "Sunday Agenda." "I said to Jesus, 'Are you the Son of God? If you are, show up in my room and I will give you my life.'"

Safa explained that he was raised in a devout Muslim household and practiced his faith rigorously before questioning his beliefs after months of reading the Bible.

He said the turning point came the next morning.

"I heard the voice of God for the first time in my life," Safa said. "The voice called me in perfect Persian accent, just like my mom used to call me. He said, 'Reza, you don't need to pray like this anymore. Your sins are forgiven you.' And that was the beginning of my faith in Christ."

Safa now travels and preaches internationally, and pointed to what he described as a growing Christian movement inside Iran.

He said that since launching a satellite broadcast into the country in 2003, "tens of thousands of Iranian Muslims" have converted.

"There's a tremendous revival taking place in Iran," Safa said, adding that the country has one of the fastest-growing evangelical populations in the world. "This is for the first time in 1,500 years that we are seeing an entire nation opening up for the gospel."

Faisal Malik, a co-guest and author of "Ishmael Returns," shared a similar account, saying he also converted after what he described as a supernatural encounter at a business convention in the U.S.

Malik said he had been raised in Pakistan to view Christianity as deceptive but came away from the experience convinced "that Jesus is the Son of God."

Both men pointed to what they described as increasing reports of dreams and visions of Jesus among Muslims, particularly in Iran and other parts of the Muslim world.

Trump's blockade threat raises risks and leaves predicaments unchanged

Anthony Zurcher

April 13, 2026

After a diplomatic team led by US Vice-President JD Vance tried, and failed, to reach a negotiated agreement to end the war with Iran on Saturday, President Donald Trump had to decide his next move.

That came on Sunday morning, in a series of Truth Social posts.

The US will impose a naval blockade of Iran, he wrote. "No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas," he wrote.

He also said that the US would continue clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz to ensure a safe passage for allied shipping. The US military, he added, was "locked and loaded" and prepared to resume attacks against Iran at an "appropriate moment".

He went on to say that while progress had been made in the 20-hour negotiations in Islamabad, Iran would not meet the US demand that it abandon its nuclear ambitions.

That view was contradicted somewhat by a US official familiar with Vance's negotiations, who spelled out a much longer list of disagreements – including on Iran's control of Hormuz and its support for regional proxies, like the Houthi rebels in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

While Trump's latest posts didn't have the apocalyptic bluster of last week's threat to end Iranian civilisation, they pose a number of new challenges – and risks – for the American side.

Will mine-clearing activities place American naval vessels at greater risk of Iranian attacks? How would the US determine who paid Iran a toll? Will the US use force on foreign-flagged ships that ignore the blockade? How will nations that depend on Iranian oil, like China, respond? Will the move, intended to choke off Iran's primary income stream, drive the price of oil to even higher levels?

There are no clear answers.

Later on Sunday, the US military Central Command announced that the naval blockade would stop all ships travelling to or from Iranian ports – a different set of conditions than in Trump's earlier proposed action.

"I don't understand how blockading the strait is going to somehow push the Iranians into opening it," Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CNN on Sunday.

On CBS' Face the Nation programme, Republican congressman Mike Turner of Ohio, who until last year chaired the House Intelligence Committee, said the blockade was a means to force a resolution to the situation in Hormuz.

"The president, by saying we're not just going to let them decide who gets through, is certainly calling all of our allies and everyone to the table," he said. "This needs to be addressed."

Last week, before Iran and the US agreed to a two-week ceasefire and face-to-face negotiations, Trump had found himself in a difficult situation.

He could continue to ratchet up the US attacks on Iran, possibly doing long-term damage to the nation's civilian infrastructure, adding to a humanitarian crisis and further destablising the global economy.

Or, he could back away from a war that has always been unpopular among the American public and is beginning to frustrate even some of Trump's supporters, who believed his promises to avoid extended foreign conflicts and Middle East entanglements.

A new CBS poll suggests that most Americans (59%) feel the war is going somewhat or very badly for the US.

Many believe the key US objectives - such as keeping open the Strait of Hormuz, securing greater freedom for the Iranian people and permanently ending Iran's nuclear programme - remain unmet. Overwhelming bipartisan majorities feel it's important for the US to achieve these goals.

Nearly a week has passed and, despite American claims of victory, the predicaments facing the president have not changed.

Trump told Fox News on Sunday morning that Iran would ultimately give the US "everything" it wants. He added that while oil prices might be the same or higher in the months ahead, he believed the US economy would hold up.

That, to say the least, is a gamble.

And with November's midterm elections looming, the president's Republican Party could pay dearly at the polls if he is wrong.

On Saturday night, as his vice-president was negotiating with the Iranians in Pakistan, Trump travelled to Miami, where he watched prize fighters batter each other in UFC cage matches.

It was, according to members of the press pool in attendance, a bizarre spectacle.

The president of the United States observed violent contests in a blood-spattered ring, chatted to celebrities and, at times, engaged in intense discussions with his Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other advisers, in full view of the thousands of attendees.

Ultimate fighting cage matches, despite their ferocity, have set rules and time limits, and end with a clear winner and loser.

It's the kind of clarity that the Iran war may never provide, as it stretches into its second month and the current two-week ceasefire appears on the verge of collapse.

The conflict has become a test of wills – of Iran's ability to endure continued US and Israeli attacks versus Trump's tolerance for the economic and political pain the war has produced.

In the end, all the participants in this fight might be diminished.

At least 200 killed in airstrikes in northeast Nigeria

April 13, 2026

Dozens of people died in airstrikes in Nigeria's northeastern Yobe state as military aircraft hunted Boko Haram jihadists, local residents and Amnesty International said on Sunday.

The airstrikes occurred on Saturday, and the death tolls differed according to the sources.

Amnesty International said on X there were "more than 100 dead" and 35 people seriously wounded, while a local chief spoke of "200 dead and wounded". Nigeria's military did not immediately respond to a query from AFP.

Africa's most populous country has been fighting a jihadist insurgency for 17 years, since Boko Haram's 2009 uprising, which has seen the emergence of powerful splinter groups including Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

While the insurgency is concentrated in the northeastern countryside, jihadists from Nigeria and the neighbouring Sahel have made inroads in western Nigeria, where organised crime gangs known as "bandits" have been raiding villages and extorting farmers and artisanal miners for years.

Ex-Army Chief, Tukur Buratai Speaks On Borno Market Airstrikes

April 13, 2026

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has described the Jilli Market airstrike, which happened along the Borno-Yobe border, as deeply unfortunate and painful.

Naija News reports that over 50 people reportedly lost their lives in the strikes, with many others injured.

Buratai, in a statement on Sunday, said the strike was a targeted military action based on credible intelligence that Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists were using the weekly market at Jilli to collect illegal levies, procure supplies, and plan further attacks.

While expressing sadness over the loss of innocent lives, Brutai said the Nigerian Air Force must be commended for the intelligence, courage and professionalism displayed in the operation in the area.

Brutai further described the Jilli Market as a den of terrorists.

The statement read, “The public should understand the history of Jilli Market. It has long been a notorious terrorist logistics hub.

“The Nigerian Army repeatedly raided and shut it down. In 2018, during Operation LAST HOLD, our troops occupied the area and engaged in multiple clashes with insurgents.

“Despite several closures, the terrorists continued to operate the market with the cooperation of some individuals who patronised and supplied them.

“It is deeply regrettable that innocent lives may have been caught in the strike, but the sole responsibility rests with the terrorists who deliberately embed themselves within civilian spaces as human shields.

“No military wishes to harm civilians, but when a market is dominated by terrorist logistics and warnings have been ignored for years, the military has a duty to act.

“I appeal to the people of Geidam, Gubio, Damasak, and Ngamdu to cooperate with the military. Stop patronising or supplying goods to any market where terrorists establish or frequent. Communities that continue to trade with insurgents will inevitably find themselves in harm’s way.

“The armed forces deserve our support. They acted on solid intelligence and struck a legitimate target. While we mourn innocent lives lost, we must not weaken our resolve against an enemy that shows no mercy.

“Victory is certain with continued military action and civilian cooperation. May the souls of the departed innocent rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly.

“The military deserves our unwavering support. They acted based on credible intelligence and targeted a legitimate objective. Although we grieve for the innocent lives that have been lost, we must not allow our determination to falter against an adversary that exhibits no compassion.

“Success is assured with ongoing military efforts and the collaboration of civilians. May the souls of the innocent who have departed find eternal peace, and may those who are injured experience a swift recovery.”

Gumi Demands Probe Into NAF Airstrike That Killed Dozens

April 13, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called for an urgent investigation into the Nigerian Air Force airstrike that reportedly killed more than 50 civilians at a weekly market in Jilli village along the Borno–Yobe border.

Naija News reports that Gumi made the call in a Facebook post on Sunday while reacting to reports of the bombing, which occurred during peak trading hours at the market.

The cleric questioned the accountability of those responsible for the air operation, asking who authorised and executed the bombing that allegedly hit civilians.

“Who are the pilots behind these bomb releases on innocent locals?” he asked.

Gumi argued that such incidents raise serious concerns about operational oversight and the protection of civilian lives during counter-terrorism operations.

He also referenced previous airstrike incidents, including the Tudun Biri bombing, as well as reported strikes in Nasarawa and Sokoto, describing them as part of a troubling pattern affecting non-combatants.

“Tudun biri, Nasarawa attack on herdsmen trailer, Sokoto attack etc are just the few ones recorded,” he said.

According to him, terrorism cannot be defeated through actions that harm innocent civilians.

“Terror cannot be fought with another terror,” he added.

Gumi urged the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, to conduct hearings into what he described as repeated “mistakes” involving the bombing of villages, markets and other civilian locations.

He further stated, “There should be an immediate Senate hearings on these so-called ‘mistakes’ on bombing villages, markets and civilians targets.

“We need answers, not condolences.”

Reports indicated that the airstrike occurred on Saturday evening at Jilli market, a busy weekly trading hub serving communities along the Borno–Yobe border.

Eyewitnesses said multiple fighter jets participated in the operation.

Authorities have indicated that the operation was intended to target terrorist elements operating in the area.

U.S Govt Reacts As Nigeria Jails Several Terrorists

April 13, 2026

The American government has commended authorities in Nigeria for the recent progress made in the fight against terrorism and other related crimes in the country.

A statement on Sunday by the U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, particularly praised the Nigerian government for the recent convictions of 386 Islamist militants following the mass trial of suspected terrorists initiated in court by the government.

The statement recognized the legal steps taken by the government in fighting the scourge of terrorism in the country, noting that “timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions.”

The U.S government also promised to continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening judicial efficiency and fairness across the country.

“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes. We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts, and we recognize this as an important step toward accountability and justice.

“We believe that timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions.

“Upholding the rule of law remains essential to ensuring the safety, stability, and long-term security of all Nigerians, and we support continued efforts to strengthen judicial efficiency and fairness across the country,” the statement read.

The commendation follows remarks by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who disclosed on Friday that 386 terrorism suspects were convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja during a four-day mass trial.

CCII Knocks Fayose Over Claim Makinde Plans To Remove Olubadan

April 13, 2026

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has criticised former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over his allegation that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is plotting to remove the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

Naija News reports that the council described the claim as misleading and a dangerous attempt to politicise traditional institutions in the state.

The President-General of the CCII, Ajeniyi Ajewole, made the council’s position known in a statement issued in Ibadan on Sunday through its Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide.

Ajewole said Fayose’s comments were unfounded and could incite unnecessary tension in Ibadanland.

Fayose had earlier alleged in a post on his 𝕏 handle that Governor Makinde was planning to depose the monarch.

He stated, “I heard reliably that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is plotting the removal of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

“The plot is to commence this week, with a government query to be issued against the Olubadan, citing his absence at the failed coronation of High Chiefs in Ibadanland two weeks ago, and other allegations.”

Reacting, the CCII said the allegation lacked credibility and should be disregarded.

“Ibadanland would not tolerate external attempts to destabilise its peace through careless political rhetoric. The allegation lacked credibility and should be disregarded by the public,” Ajewole said.

The council stressed that matters concerning the Olubadan stool follow a well-established traditional process and cannot be influenced by political speculation.

“Matters relating to the Olubadan stool follow a well-established process that cannot be altered by political speculation,” Ajewole stated.

He warned the former governor against making statements capable of misleading the public or causing distrust among residents.

Ajewole further stated, “Fayose should not inflame the polity in Ibadan and the state in general with reckless and unverified statements. We advise him to keep his mouth shut and take his divisive politics elsewhere rather than dragging Ibadan into unnecessary controversy.”

Makinde Will Not Undermine Olubadan – CCII

Ajewole also described Fayose’s intervention as unwarranted, noting that the former governor had no role in the traditional or political structure of Ibadanland.

He stated, “Our own Governor Makinde is a true son of Ibadanland who would not do anything to undermine the institution of Olubadan.

“He is not in the same class and mould with Fayose who is ready to do anything for political gains.”

He added that dragging the revered Olubadan institution into partisan politics was both disrespectful and unacceptable.

Meanwhile, a media aide to the Olubadan, Adeola Oloko, also dismissed Fayose’s claim, saying there was no disagreement between the governor and the monarch.

“There is no rift between the governor and the Olubadan to warrant such moves. I don’t see the cause of friction between them,” he said.

Similarly, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, said the government had neither contemplated nor discussed any plan to remove the traditional ruler.

The CCII urged political leaders across the country to exercise caution and avoid statements that could threaten public peace, reiterating that the Ibadan people remain committed to protecting their traditional institutions.

Jilli Airstrike: We Are Traders, Not Insurgents – Survivors

April 13, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Survivors of the recent military airstrike on Jilli market in Borno State have said they were legitimate animal traders conducting their daily business when the incident occurred, describing the attack as sudden and devastating.

Naija News reports that the victims spoke on Sunday following the airstrike that reportedly struck the weekly market in Jilli village, located along the Borno–Yobe border, on April 11, 2026.

The operation involved the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai in coordination with the Nigerian Army.

Naija News had earlier reported that no fewer than 30 people were feared killed in the attack, which sent traders and residents fleeing as explosions rocked the busy market.

One of the survivors, Abu Goni, while speaking with Punch, said the incident occurred shortly after Maghrib prayers, while trading activities were still ongoing.

He stated, “I went to the market with my horse. All of a sudden, a jet came. I didn’t even know what was going on, and everyone there did not pay attention to the jet.

“We were there after Maghrib prayer around six before the strike began. After the strike, some died, some did not die, but I thank God I am alive.”

Goni dismissed claims that the market was linked to insurgent activities, insisting that it served as a normal livestock trading point.

“To be honest, I am not aware of that. Around six years ago, soldiers once settled there, but now it’s just a normal market where we sell domestic animals.

“In the whole market, there are no houses or buildings; only goats and sheep are sold. People bring animals, sell, and return home,” he added.

Another survivor, Bulama Balo, alleged that several fighter jets participated in the operation, saying they appeared to take turns during the strike.

“Three jets came, sometimes three, sometimes two. They were interchanging. The first one came, dropped fire, the second one came and dropped its own too,” he said.

According to him, survivors fled to the nearby Maigumeri community after the incident.

“Around 3 o’clock in the night after the incident, we went to Maigumeri and slept there. Around 9 o’clock this morning, we went to the General Hospital,” Balo said.

He added that some victims were later referred to a teaching hospital for further treatment.

Zulum Says Market Was Closed

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, said the Jilli market had been shut down about five years ago.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor explained that Jilli and another market in the area were previously closed because they were allegedly used as logistics hubs by insurgents.

He added that he had been briefed on the airstrike and was consulting with the Yobe State Government and military authorities over the development.

Zulum also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting security operations while protecting law-abiding citizens.

Fact-Check Links INEC Chair To Controversial 𝕏 Account Amid Resignation Calls

April 13, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

A fact-check has revealed a possible link between the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, and an 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account that posted partisan comments during the 2023 elections, intensifying calls for his resignation.

The findings emerged in an investigation conducted by Daily Trust as political parties, civil society organisations, and individuals questioned the neutrality of the electoral umpire.

Critics have argued that alleged comments linked to the account suggested sympathy for the All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Bola Tinubu.

Groups demanding the INEC chairman’s resignation said such alleged public expressions of bias undermine confidence in the electoral body.

They argued that the law professor’s perceived partisanship compromises his ability to act as an impartial arbiter in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Controversial Posts Surface

An 𝕏 account reportedly linked to Amupitan contained several comments interpreted as supportive of the APC during the 2023 election period.

On March 17, 2023, while reacting to a claim circulating online about supporters of Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, the account posted: “They are evil in the 24th century.”

In another post on March 18, 2023, responding to a message by the APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, the account reportedly replied: “Victory is sure.”

Similarly, on April 25, 2023, when a pro-Tinubu account celebrated the reception the president received at the Abuja airport, the account responded with a single word: “Asiwaju.”

Digital Trail Traced

The investigation showed that the 𝕏 account with user ID 1567086242164101120 was created on September 6, 2022, originally bearing the handle @joashamupitan.

Amid recent controversy on April 10, 2026, the account was reportedly renamed @Sundayvibe00, locked and later labelled a “Parody Account.”

Analysts noted that 𝕏 user IDs remain permanent even when usernames change, creating a continuous digital trail linking previous versions of the account.

A new account using the same @joashamupitan handle also appeared shortly after the original account changed its name, raising questions about possible impersonation or handle recycling.

Claims About Phone Link Inconclusive

Investigators also examined claims that the account’s two-factor authentication was linked to a phone number reportedly associated with the INEC chairman.

However, they said such claims could not be independently verified through open-source investigative tools.

“No direct forensic confirmation was obtained linking the phone number to the 𝕏 account,” the report stated.

Reacting through his media aide, Amupitan denied operating the account, insisting that he does not run any X account and has never engaged in partisan commentary.

He also maintained that he remains politically neutral in both public and private capacities.

INEC, in a statement issued by its Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, described the account as “fake,” adding that it had undergone multiple changes.

Verdict Of Fact-Check

The investigation concluded that there is credible evidence that an 𝕏 account previously operated under the handle @joashamupitan, with a consistent digital history and authentic posts.

However, the report noted that the emergence of a new account with the same handle and the lack of verifiable technical links to Amupitan complicate definitive attribution.

Based on the available evidence, the claim linking the account to the INEC chairman was rated “mostly true.”

Escaped Pakistani detainee case: Police probe SOP lapses, weaknesses

13 Apr 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 — Police have opened an investigation paper to identify any weaknesses or non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) following the escape of a Pakistani man from Sungai Buloh Prison in an incident last Thursday.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the investigation is being conducted under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code, Berita Harian reported.

“Police have opened an investigation paper to ensure any weaknesses or non-compliance with SOP are examined under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code.

“We will look into any negligence or weaknesses, and appropriate action will be taken,” he said at a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters here today.

He said efforts to track down the suspect are ongoing, and police believe, based on information received, that the detainee is still in the Sungai Buloh area.

He added that statements have been recorded from various parties, including police officers, Prison Department officials, and detainees who witnessed the incident.

“We also believe the suspect has not contacted any associates and is currently alone,” he said.

Previously, Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said the incident occurred at about 6pm last Thursday during the transfer of remand detainees to Sungai Buloh Prison by the Shah Alam Escort Unit.

Upon arrival at the prison parade ground, the suspect escaped while alighting from the police vehicle.

On the day of the incident, the remand detainee had just completed court proceedings at the Shah Alam Court involving sexual offences against children, robbery, and immigration offences.

The suspect has been identified as Muhammad Hassan, 24, and was last seen wearing an orange T-shirt and black trousers.

Penang cuts quit rent to RM50 for non-Muslim worship sites, cemeteries and charities

12 Apr 2026

GEORGE TOWN, April 12 — Non-Muslim houses of worship, cemeteries, charitable bodies and non-profit organisations in Penang will be eligible for a nominal quit rent rate of RM50 per lot following the latest revision.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative is part of improvements made by the state government to the quit rent mechanism, reflecting its concern in easing the financial burden on the people, particularly landowners affected by the 2026 quit rent rate review.

“We have previously announced several measures, including rebates, a new calculation method and land reclassification, after taking into account nearly all scenarios.

“These announcements must continue to be communicated to ensure associations and landowners fully understand the initiatives introduced,” he said at a briefing and press conference on the adjustment of nominal quit rent rates for such entities here today.

Citing examples in the Northeast and Southwest districts, Chow said several houses of worship, cemeteries and association premises that were previously subjected to high quit rent of up to hundreds of thousands of ringgit will now only be required to pay the nominal RM50 rate following the revision.

“For instance, Lot 57 of the United Hokkien Cemetery in the Northeast district was previously charged RM735,682, but following the adjustment, it is now subject to only RM50. Likewise, Lot 58, which was previously RM111,709, is now also eligible for the RM50 nominal rate,” he said.

Chow said landowners who had already made payments based on the revised rates announced earlier may apply to their respective District and Land Offices for refunds or have the amount credited towards future payments.

He encouraged all eligible organisations to submit applications or appeals to their respective district and land offices to enable review and updating in the system.

“In principle, most non-profit organisations will qualify for this nominal rate, but applications must still be submitted for verification purposes,” he said.

Currently, there are 1,204 such entities registered with the Penang Harmony Corporation (HARMONICO), with 58 applications received by the Northeast District and Land Office. Some have qualified for the nominal rate after review, while the rest are still being assessed.

He added that the state government is also assisting organisations facing complex cases, including through relevant bodies such as Harmonico, to ensure each case is resolved fairly and comprehensively.

The state executive council meeting on April 1 agreed to improve the mechanism for determining quit rent rates in an effort to reduce the burden on landowners affected by the earlier increase. — Bernama

Court of Appeal orders businessman to enter defence over offensive messages to Raja Permaisuri Agong in 2023

13 Apr 2026

PUTRAJAYA, April 13 — The Court of Appeal today ordered a businessman to enter his defence on two charges of sending offensive communications to the Raja Permaisuri Agong in 2023.

A three-member bench comprising Datuk Azman Abdullah, Datuk Mohd Radzi Abdul Hamid and Datuk Meor Hashimi Abdul Hamid unanimously allowed the prosecution’s appeal, setting aside earlier decisions by the Sessions Court and the High Court, which had acquitted and discharged Sharil Mohd Sarif without calling for his defence.

Delivering the decision, Judge Mohd Radzi said both lower courts had erred in finding that the prosecution failed to prove the element of intent, relying on testimony from a forensic psychiatry consultant who stated that the respondent was not of sound mind and unaware of the consequences of his actions.

The appellate court ruled that the case be remitted to the Sessions Court for Sharil to enter his defence before the same trial judge, with May 15 set for mention.

Judge Mohd Radzi said that since Sharil had raised a defence of insanity, he would be allowed to recall the forensic psychiatry expert to present the same evidence.

On October 16, 2023, the Sessions Court acquitted and discharged Sharil, 43, at the close of the prosecution’s case. The High Court upheld that decision on June 27, 2024, prompting the prosecution to file an appeal.

Sharil is accused of making and initiating the transmission of offensive communications via his Twitter account between 5.28am and 5.30am on March 12, 2023, with the intent to annoy others.

He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under Section 233(3), which carries a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both, upon conviction. A further fine of RM1,000 may be imposed for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Sharil has prior convictions for similar offences, having been sentenced in 2019, 2020 and 2021 by the Sessions Court, including a one-year jail term and a RM20,000 fine in 2021.

At the Court of Appeal proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Atiqah Abdul Karim @ Husaini appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Pang Tek Kit represented the respondent. — Bernama

Court grants FashionValet founder Vivy Yusof, husband temporary release of passport to perform Haj, trial postponed to July

13 Apr 2026

KUALA LUMPUR,  April 13 — The trial involving FashionValet Sdn Bhd (FashionValet) founder Datin Vivy Yusof and her husband,  Datuk Fadzarudin Shah Anuar, for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM8 million in investment funds, which was supposed to begin today, has been postponed to July.

Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad postponed the trial following an application by the couple’s counsel, Shaarvin Raaj, to vacate the earlier trial dates scheduled today, April 14 to 17, May 18 to 22 and June 8 to 12, 2026, as they need to prepare their defence statements.

Following this, the court set July 20 and 24, August 17 and 18, October 16 and 23, November 3, 20 and 30, December 17 and 18 this year, as well as January 15, 28 and 29 as the new dates for the hearing.

Earlier, Shaarvin informed the court that documents related to the case needed to be submitted to auditors, a process expected to take about six weeks before the defence could finalise and submit its statement to the prosecution.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Noorsyazwani Mohamad Sobry, assisted by DPP Elyza Amira Habeeb Rahman, did not object to the postponement.

During the same proceedings, the court also allowed the couple’s application for temporary release of their passports to perform the Haj pilgrimage, and also an order for the documents to be returned to the court by June 18.

On December 5, 2024, Vivy, whose full name is Vivy Sofinas Yusof, 38, and Fadzarudin, 37, pleaded not guilty to charges of CBT involving funds from Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Permodalan Nasional Berhad amounting to RM8 million.

The couple, as directors of FashionValet Sdn Bhd, were accused of committing CBT by authorising a payment of RM8 million from FashionValet’s corporate bank account to 30 Maple Sdn Bhd without the approval of the company’s Board of Directors.

The offence was allegedly committed on August 21, 2018, at Public Bank Berhad, Bukit Damansara branch.

They are charged under Section 409 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, whipping, and a possible fine upon conviction.

They also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge of dishonest misappropriation of property belonging to FashionValet, namely Khazanah and PNB investment funds amounting to RM8 million, at the same location and date.

The charge,  under Section 403 of the Penal Code, carries a prison sentence of not less than six months and a maximum of five years with whipping and shall be fined, if convicted. — Bernama

Federal govt allocates RM60m to tackle poverty in Terengganu, says Anwar

13 Apr 2026

KUALA TERENGGANU, April 13 — The federal government has approved an allocation of RM60 million for poverty eradication programmes in Terengganu this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the programme covers efforts to increase people’s income as well as improve housing in the state.

“The implementation of this programme will be coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department,” he said when speaking at the Madani Gathering with Terengganu tahfiz students at Sekolah Menengah Imtiyaz Yayasan Terengganu here today.

A total of 1,500 students, teachers and practitioners of pondok and tahfiz schools in Terengganu attended the event. Also present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

At the event, Anwar, who is also finance minister, also announced an allocation of RM1.8 million for infrastructure and facility repair works at 18 tahfiz schools in Terengganu this year.

The prime minister also urged tahfiz and pondok schools nationwide to master new technologies, including artificial intelligence.

He said this is important to ensure that these educational institutions are not left behind in current developments.

Anwar also stressed the importance of mastering other languages besides Arabic and Bahasa Melayu among pondok and tahfiz students. — Bernama

Anwar: Speed up RM27m Terengganu Matriculation College project

13 Apr 2026

MARANG, April 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for the construction project of the Terengganu Matriculation College in Bukit Payong here, with an initial allocation of RM27 million, to be expedited in order to create broader educational opportunities.

He said the move is also important to ensure that the educational facility can be utilised by students as soon as possible, in line with the government’s efforts to strengthen access to quality education nationwide.

“Applications from Terengganu for the matriculation programme have exceeded 7,000. In fact, there has been no matriculation education facility in this state, which means the need for this college cannot be disputed.

“Although the project begins with RM27 million, once completed, it will be significant (in its benefits) if we can expedite it,” he said when speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the matriculation college here today.

Also present were Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh.

The Terengganu Matriculation College has received an initial allocation of RM27 million and will have a capacity of up to 3,000 students, equipped with modern laboratories, student hostels as well as complete academic facilities.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the government will also focus on implementing educational programmes and projects that can secure the future of the younger generation.

He said the Cabinet last month also decided that students who obtained 10 As in the recent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination would automatically be given opportunities for higher education, such as matriculation colleges.

Anwar said at the same time, the 90 per cent admission quota for Bumiputera students would be maintained.

“In this matter, the brightest children of wealthy urban families are not marginalised, while the 90 per cent quota is retained to prevent the widening gap between the rich and the poor,” he said.

In the meantime, the Prime Minister also advised the younger generation to enhance their education in research, science and technology by emulating Iran’s capabilities in these fields, enabling the country to withstand external pressures.

“The lesson from this is the strength of unity among the Iranian people and the quality of education, research, science and technology emphasised, which allows them to endure despite pressures from the world’s largest economic and military powers, namely the United States and its ally Israel,” he said. — Bernama

Preserving Islamic Values & Culture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

April 13, 2026

What makes AI a cultural, and even ideological, threat is that while often presented as neutral, AI systems are never value-free; they reflect the assumptions and goals of those who design them. Many of these assumptions come from a materialist worldview. They tend to prioritize speed, control, data, and prediction rather than a spiritual or relational understanding of life. For Muslims, this is a serious concern.

The worldview behind AI overlooks concepts such as taqwa, intention, submission, and the unseen. Instead, it promotes efficiency over reflection, personalization over community, and utility over meaning. AI does not merely offer tools. It shapes how people think, decide, and relate. Without critical engagement, we may absorb its values without realizing what has been displaced.

At the heart of this shift lies a troubling redefinition of meaning itself. AI culture tends to privilege efficiency, speed, and utility. The sacred is displaced by the algorithmic. The inner life is often flattened into metrics, data points, and behavioral predictions. While the tools themselves may be impressive, the philosophy behind them raises urgent questions: what kind of human being is this system encouraging us to become? What happens to the soul in a world that favors automation over contemplation?

This emerging culture poses a particular threat to us as Muslims, not merely in our religious identity, but in our civilizational memory. It introduces what we might call an Islamic Cultural Threat: a slow erosion of traditional ways of knowing, relating, and transmitting values. When AI systems begin to answer religious questions, dictate learning paths, recommend content, and even simulate companionship, they risk replacing the very structures that hold our culture together: families, scholars, spiritual gatherings, and intergenerational wisdom.

The threat is not always obvious. It often comes through convenience, personalization, and the illusion of control. A young Muslim may find it easier to ask a chatbot than to consult a teacher or elder. An algorithm may feed them information based not on truth, but on engagement patterns. Over time, the authority of sacred knowledge is quietly replaced by the appeal of fast, (seemingly) emotionally responsive machines.

AI also tends to emphasize individualism. It isolates the user, offering tailored experiences that subtly reinforce the self as the center of meaning. This stands in sharp contrast to our communal ethos, where growth is shaped in relation to others, through worship, service, and shared responsibility. The AI-driven self is an assembled identity, the Islamic self is a cultivated soul. Moreover, most AI systems are rarely designed with our Islamic ethics in mind. Their default assumptions about gender, privacy, modesty, and moral limits often reflect values alien to us.

As these tools become more embedded in daily life, from education and entertainment to decision-making and worship, the danger is not only misuse, but cultural drift. A slow forgetting of what it means to live, learn, and grow as a Muslim. Recognizing this threat is not a rejection of technology. It is a call to reclaim agency, to remain rooted in our values even as the world changes rapidly around us. The question is not how to resist AI, but how to navigate it with eyes open, hearts awake, and principles intact.

Humanitarian Needs Rise in Afghanistan as Natural Disasters Destroy Homes and Livelihoods

April 13, 2026

By: S. Naser Watandost

A surge in natural disasters across Afghanistan has left a growing humanitarian crisis in its wake, as officials report rising casualties, widespread destruction, and increasing pressure on already fragile infrastructure and livelihoods.

According to Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan officials, at least 148 people have been martyred, 216 injured, and eight others remain missing since late March as a result of heavy rainfall, flash floods, earthquakes, and landslides. The figures were confirmed by deputy spokesperson Mullah Hamdullah Fitrat, who described the events as among the most severe natural disasters to strike the country in recent months.

The human toll is only part of the story. The disasters have caused extensive material damage, destroying at least 1,149 homes completely and partially damaging more than 5,000 others. Entire communities have been left without shelter, forcing families to seek refuge with relatives, in temporary camps, or in open areas with limited access to basic services.

Infrastructure has also been heavily affected. Officials say that around 366 kilometers of roads and transport routes have been damaged or destroyed, disrupting connectivity between provinces and complicating relief efforts. In a country where many regions already face isolation due to geography and underdeveloped infrastructure, such damage significantly hampers the delivery of emergency assistance and the movement of goods.

The agricultural sector, which forms the backbone of Afghanistan’s rural economy, has been particularly hard hit. Floodwaters have swept away thousands of acres of farmland, destroyed crops, and uprooted large numbers of trees. For many families, agriculture is the primary source of income and food security. The loss of crops and land not only affects immediate livelihoods but also threatens longer-term economic stability and increases the risk of food shortages.

Experts warn that the combination of persistent heavy rainfall and insufficient flood management systems could lead to even more severe consequences in the weeks and months ahead. Without adequate drainage systems, flood barriers, and early warning mechanisms, communities remain highly vulnerable to recurring disasters. The cumulative impact of these events could strain local economies, increase poverty, and deepen humanitarian needs.

The government’s role in responding to this crisis is critical. Immediate priorities include search and rescue operations, provision of emergency shelter, food distribution, and medical assistance for the injured. Authorities have acknowledged the urgency of the situation and the need for rapid intervention to support affected populations. However, the scale of the disaster presents significant challenges, particularly in remote areas where access is limited.

Beyond emergency response, the government bears responsibility for long-term disaster preparedness and resilience. This includes investing in infrastructure such as flood control systems, reinforcing roads and bridges, and promoting safer construction practices. Strengthening meteorological services and early warning systems can also help reduce casualties by giving communities more time to prepare and evacuate when necessary.

In addition, there is a need for better land and water management. Deforestation, unplanned urban expansion, and inadequate maintenance of waterways have all contributed to increased vulnerability. Addressing these structural issues requires coordinated policies and sustained investment, which can be difficult in a resource-constrained environment but remain essential for reducing future risks.

Charity organizations and humanitarian agencies play an equally vital role in responding to natural disasters in Afghanistan. Both local charities and international organizations often step in to fill gaps in assistance, providing food, clean water, shelter materials, and healthcare services. In many cases, they are able to reach remote communities more quickly or effectively due to their established networks and experience in crisis response.

However, the effectiveness of these efforts depends on coordination with government authorities and other stakeholders. Transparent distribution of aid, avoidance of duplication, and prioritization of the most vulnerable populations are key factors in ensuring that assistance has the greatest possible impact. Collaboration between different actors can also help mobilize additional resources and expertise, improving overall response capacity.

At the same time, the role of wealthy individuals and the broader public should not be underestimated. In Afghan society, traditions of charity and mutual support are deeply rooted. During times of crisis, these values become even more important. Financial contributions, donations of goods, and volunteer efforts can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected.

Wealthy members of society, in particular, have a moral and social responsibility to support disaster relief efforts. Their contributions can help fund the reconstruction of homes, the restoration of agricultural land, and the rebuilding of essential infrastructure. In situations where government resources are limited, private philanthropy can play a crucial role in bridging the gap.

Ordinary citizens also have responsibilities, both in terms of helping others and protecting themselves. Following safety guidelines issued by authorities, avoiding high-risk areas such as riverbanks during heavy rainfall, and participating in community preparedness initiatives can reduce the risk of casualties. At the same time, acts of solidarity, such as offering shelter to displaced families or assisting in local relief efforts—strengthen community resilience.

The economic impact of these disasters is likely to be significant. Damage to infrastructure disrupts trade and transportation, increasing costs and slowing economic activity. The destruction of farmland reduces agricultural output, which can lead to higher food prices and increased dependence on imports or aid. For a country already facing economic challenges, these additional pressures can have far-reaching consequences.

In the longer term, repeated natural disasters can hinder development by diverting resources away from essential sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. This cycle of destruction and recovery underscores the importance of investing in resilience and preparedness rather than relying solely on reactive measures.

Climate change is widely recognized as a contributing factor to the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events worldwide. Afghanistan, with its fragile environment and limited adaptive capacity, is particularly vulnerable to these changes. Addressing this challenge requires not only national efforts but also international support, including funding, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing.

In conclusion, the recent rise in casualties and damage from natural disasters in Afghanistan highlights a collective responsibility that extends across all levels of society. The government must lead in coordinating response and building resilience, humanitarian organizations must continue to provide essential support, and individuals—especially those with greater means—must contribute to relief and recovery efforts. Only through a coordinated and sustained approach can the country mitigate the impact of such disasters and protect its people from future harm.

Kabul, Tashkent to Expand Hairatan Rail Operations, Boost Trade Capacity

April 12, 2026

KABUL: A joint meeting between Afghan and Uzbek officials, along with representatives from the private sector, has been held at Hairatan Port in Balkh to discuss expanding the transfer of commercial and raw goods via the Hairatan railway line.

Both sides agreed to introduce 24-hour services at the port to facilitate smoother and faster trade operations, the state-run Bakhter News Agency reported on Saturday.

The agency said that the round-the-clock system would significantly improve services for traders and the public, increase transport efficiency, and ensure easier access to laboratory and logistics services.

In a major step toward strengthening economic cooperation, the two sides also agreed to increase the number of railway wagons from the current 130 to between 500 and 700, the agency added.

Authorities believe that implementing this plan will lead to substantial economic transformation and enhance bilateral trade between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

Pakistan launches rocket strikes in Afghanistan’s Kunar, locals say

By Fidel Rahmati

April 13, 2026

reports indicated that Pakistani forces carried out rocket strikes on Sunday in the Shali Dara area of Khas Kunar District, eastern Afghanistan.

No immediate details were available on casualties or damage, and local residents reported panic in nearby communities following the attacks.

Authorities from the Taliban in Kunar have not yet commented on the incident, although similar strikes have previously been reported in border provinces.

Earlier, Taliban officials said Pakistani forces had conducted strikes in Paktika Province, while residents in Khost Province also reported cross-border shelling.

The latest escalation comes after talks between Pakistani officials and Taliban representatives in Urumqi ended without agreement earlier this month.

Multiple rounds of negotiations between Pakistan and the Taliban, including efforts mediated by Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, have failed to resolve key disputes.

The main sticking point remains the presence of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan fighters in Afghanistan, with Islamabad accusing them of launching cross-border attacks, a claim denied by the Taliban.

Rising cross-border tensions highlight the fragility of relations between Pakistan and Taliban authorities, as calls grow for stronger action against militant groups and renewed diplomatic engagement.

UNAMA says 11 killed in attack on Shi’ite gathering in Herat

By Fidel Rahmati

April 12, 2026

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said at least 11 people were killed and 11 others wounded in a gun attack on a Shi’ite gathering in Herat, with women and children among the victims.

UNAMA said in a statement on Sunday that the attack took place on Friday, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on civilians gathered near a Shi’ite shrine in the Deh Miri area, located between Injil and Zinda Jan districts.

Georgette Gagnon expressed condolences to the victims’ families, describing the incident as a “horrific crime” and wishing a swift recovery for those injured.

She called on the Taliban authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the protection of all civilians across Afghanistan against armed violence.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Taliban officials have not yet publicly commented on the incident, raising concerns about accountability and security.

Attacks targeting Shi’ite communities in Afghanistan have occurred repeatedly in recent years, often blamed on extremist groups, increasing fears among minority populations.

Rights organizations, including Rawadari, have previously reported that killings of civilians in Herat were “targeted and organized,” while also citing lack of transparency in casualty reporting.

The latest attack underscores ongoing security challenges in Afghanistan, highlighting urgent calls for protection of minorities and credible investigations into violence against civilians.
