Folk Singer,Devi,Sings Mahatma Gandhi’s Favourite Bhajan At BJP Event, Faces The Music, Apologises

-------------

If you sing Mahatma Gandhi's favourite Bhajan, Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram, at a BJP event, beware.

Bihar folk singer Devi learnt that the hard way at 'Main Atal Rahunga', an event in Patna celebrating the late former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary on December 25.

A section of the crowd became agitated when Devi sang the part of the Bhajan that goes: Ishwar-Allah Tero Naam, Sabko Sanmati De Bhagwan[Ishwar and Allah are both your names, Lord, give all the people good sense].

“Dekhiye Bhagwan Hum Sabka Haui, Aur Mera Koi Uddeshya Ram Ko Yaad Karmneka Thha Aur Ram Sita Ko Yaad Kiya Humne[See, God belongs to every one of us, and my intention was to remember Ram. And I remembered Ram-Sita],” the singer pleaded on the microphone at the protesters.

Her explanation, that she was invoking Lord Ram, did not cut ice with the protesters. At this point, a leader took the microphone and said Jai Shri Ram. Chants echoed back. The leader explained that the singer's intentions were pure.

Another leader told the singer: “Sorry Type Ka Bol Dijiye[say something like sorry].”

As the jeers from the crowd continued, the singer said: “See, I have sung this song for Lord Ram and all of you know that our Indian culture – please give me two minutes, and you will see my heart is very big – only we Hindus assimilate everyone within us. And I think there is no need for you to be hurt by this song but if you have been hurt, I would like to say sorry for that. But I want to say that our Hindu religion it is said, Vasudeva Kutumbakam [the world is a family]...”

As the protests continued, she said Jai Shri Ram multiple times.

Opposition politicians slammed the BJP over the incident.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad was quoted as saying: "...singer Devi sang Bapu's bhajan in the auditorium built in his name and said ‘Sita Ram’. The BJP members made her apologise on the microphone and made her chant Jai Shri Ram instead of Jai Sita Ram. Why do Sanghis insult women including Sita Mata?”

On Thursday, Congress MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi, also shared a video clip of the incident on social media and tore into the BJP.

"They offer flowers to Bapu to show off to the world but in reality, they have no respect for him. They take the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar to show off but in reality, they insult him. The BJP hates our tolerant and inclusive culture and tradition so much that they insult our great men again and again," she wrote in Hindi.

Rising temple pleas due to Muslim failure to handover Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura: VHP

------------

The VHP Thursday said that the rising number of petitions claiming Hindu right over Muslim monuments could be a result of the anger among Hindus over Muslim community’s failure to hand over disputed sites in Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi to the Hindus voluntarily.

The organisation, however, said that Mohan Bhagwat’s cautionary words on such petitions should be understood in full context. “In 1984, a Dharm Sansad had been organised. It was said ‘Give us these three (Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura) and there will be no noise on other issues.’ It is almost 2025 now. That what was proposed in 1984 has not materialised may have led to certain situations. So, the anger visible in society is probably among the important reasons,” VHP general secretary Milind Parande said.

On Bhagwat’s statement, Parande said, “Earlier, Mohan Bhagwat ji had spoken about Kashi and Mathura and his (latest) statement should be understood in that context.”

When asked to comment on certain statements by some Hindu religious figures that have run contrary to Bhagwat’s advice, Parande told The Indian Express, “We don’t comment on saints.”

In December 19, at an event in Pune, Bhagwat underlined that Ram Temple in Ayodhya was a “matter of faith” for Hindus, but asserted that it was “unacceptable” to rake up “such new issues on a daily basis” simply because of “extreme hatred, malice, enmity and suspicion”.

Since the statement, some Hindu religious figures have said that the Sangh must not tell the Hindu society what to do.

Speaking on government control of temples, Parande said, “We are going to start a countrywide public awareness campaign in this regard from January 5, 2025. The call for this campaign will be given in a special and huge gathering of lakhs of people called ‘Haindava Shankhaaraavam’ to be organized in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.”

The organisation has also prepared a draft law for handover of temples to society and their subsequent management. Parande said that a delegation from the organisation last week met Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and gave him the draft law for his consideration.

The VHP also made public a list of demands that it said should be fulfilled before the handover of temples takes place.

These include removing all non-Hindus employed in temples and endowment departments; only practising Hindus with faith being employed in the worship, offerings and service of God; bar on appointment of politicians or persons associated with any political party on the Trust Boards and management of temples; only Hindus being allowed to have shops inside and outside the temples; and all encroachments and constructions made by non-Hindus and all encroachments and illegal constructions whatsoever on temple lands should be removed.

Parande also raised the issue of demographic imbalance. “There are four reasons for demographic imbalance in the country. One is illegal immigration from Myanmar and Bangladesh. Second is falling fertility rate among Hindus. Third is conversion by Christians and fourth is Love Jihad by Muslims. Only after we address these issues will we be able to correct the demographic imbalance,” he said.

Islamic Jihad condemns triple aggression (US-British-Zionist) on Yemen

26 Dec 2024

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine condemned in the strongest terms the triple aggression (US, British and Zionist) on Yemen.

The movement said in a statement on Thursday evening: "We condemn in the strongest terms the triple aggression (US - British - Zionist) against brotherly Yemen, especially the barbaric Zionist aggression against the Yemeni capital Sana'a and the targeting of civilian sites in it, including facilities and towers belonging to Sana'a International Airport, in addition to power plants and civilian economic facilities."

The Jihad Movement emphasized that this aggression reflects the extent of the frustration of the aggression forces in the face of the courage and pride shown by the brotherly Yemenis in the face of the forces that prey on our nation , its peoples and want to impose their hegemony on them by committing massacres and bombing civilian facilities, because they are unable to impose their will by military force.

The Jihad Movement added in its statement: As we salute the steadfastness of the brotherly Yemenis in the face of this persistent criminality, we commend the positions of Sayyed Abdul Malik al-Houthi, in which he announced that he would continue to support the people of Palestine, their cause and their resistance.

All Arabs Are 'Islamist' By Default In Germany, Ex-Muslim Or Not

26 December, 2024

The German media's inability to put the “suspect in a mould” fuels xenophobia and shows the utter dehumanization of Muslims that exists within the German political framework, writes Hebh Jamal [photo credit: Getty Images]

------------

On December 20, a horrific attack took place at a Christmas Market in Magdeburg, Germany, where five people were killed, and nearly 200 others injured after a man drove into the crowded event.

The tragedy sent shockwaves across the world, but even before the victims’ loved ones could begin to grieve, another story began to dominate the narrative: the false claim that Muslims and foreigners pose a fundamental threat to Germany and must be expelled.

Speculation about the attacker’s identity quickly spiralled into assumptions of radical Islamist motives targeting white Germans during the holiday season. One post on X declared, “Europe needs to wake up quickly and start mass deportation.” Another user shared a photo with the hashtag #Magdeburg, captioned, “Remigration. Europe is not your homeland. Stop the integration lie.”

Yet, the attacker, Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, was neither Muslim nor an Islamist. A Saudi national residing in Germany since 2006, Abdulmohsen was vocal in his disdain for both Islam and the Saudi government.

He expressed support for Israel, aligned himself with Germany’s far-right AfD party, and repeatedly criticised former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to accept Syrian refugees. His social media was littered with far-right propaganda warning of “sharia law” and denouncing Islam.

Despite these clear contradictions, the facts seemed irrelevant to the Islamophobic frenzy that followed. Abdulmohsen’s identity as an Arab migrant was enough for him to be labelled an Islamist.

The damage was further amplified when X owner Elon Musk shared a video of a woman claiming that Abdulmohsen was secretly a radical Islamist.

She invoked the concept of “taqiyya” — a misunderstood Islamic term referring to dissimulation under duress — to argue that his public opposition to Islam was a deceptive ploy. This baseless conspiracy theory spread to Musk’s 209 million followers, reinforcing a false narrative that the attacker carried out his attack in the name of his faith.

Three days after the attack, AfD leader, Alice Weidel called for a rally in Magdeburg where speaks to a crowd of thousands that the attack was an “act by an Islamist full of hate for what brings people together” and that  “too much focus is placed on relativising the actions of those who despise our society,” said Weidel.

Knowingly obscuring the facts, Weidel and the AfD have carefully manufactured rage against migrants and Muslims, weaponising the attacks in Magdeburg just in time for Germany’s upcoming elections.

For Germany's political elite, Islamophobia is a natural reflex

As political factions in the government are trying to ease tensions and clamp down on misinformation, it is now far too late. For years, the more moderate political parties in Germany have appeased right-wing sentiments, clamped down on immigration and stoked fears against migrants in language that does not sound far different from the AfD itself.

Just last year, Olaf Sholz signed the biggest anti-immigration bill in the country’s history. The cross-party deal was to clamp down on immigration, cut back benefits from asylum seekers and refugees, aims to speed up deportations, and considers setting up migrant centers outside of the country.

This was a clear attempt to subdue the right-wing populist support and the rise of the AfD. It backfired, serving only to amplify xenophobic fears rather than quell them.

FDP and CDU politicians have even called for migrant quotes to be placed in neighbourhoods and schools.

FDP Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki said that a “quarter of the city must not have more than 25 percent migrants so that no parallel societies emerge” and referred to pro-Palestinian demonstrations that take place on German streets due to the “parallel societies that develop because people came together in certain neighbourhoods.” CDU General Linnemann echoes Kubicki by calling for a similar quota, but in schools.

Even calls for unity from figures like German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier ring hollow. While condemning “hatred and violence,” Steinmeier has previously demanded blanket condemnations of Hamas from Arabs and Palestinians in Germany, implicitly holding entire communities accountable for events abroad.

Even in her attempt to discredit Weidel, the German interior minister, Nancy Faeser links the attacker’s brutality to Muslims. Faeser told BILD, that the suspect “acted in an unbelievably cruel and brutal manner like an Islamist terrorist, although he was ideologically hostile to Islam.”

Faeser’s association of violence with Islam and her inability to put the “suspect in a mould” fuels xenophobia and shows the utter dehumanisation of Muslims that exists within the German political framework.

And for over a year, the political language around pro-Palestinian demonstrators who are protesting their government’s complicity in genocide, are called antisemites who are criminalised, censored, beaten by police, and even denied citizenship.

To the regular German, innocent people are now no different than the Magdeburg attacker, and the German political elite is entirely to blame for their refusal to condemn right-wing extremist rhetoric. Instead, they have been fueling it, and an anticipatory AfD victory can only mean dark days ahead for Muslims in the West.

Army officer martyred, 13 militants neutralised in three KP operations

By Zarmeen Zehra

------------

RAWALPINDI: An army officer embraced martyrdom while 13 terrorists were neutralised during three separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's districts, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

According to the military's media wing, an intelligence-based operation (IBO) was conducted on the reported presence of terrorists in the general area of Jani Khel in Bannu district.

During the operation, the ISPR said the security forces troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location and resultantly killed two of them.

Meanwhile, another IBO was conducted in the North Waziristan district where five terrorists were effectively neutralised by security forces during the exchange of fire while eight got injured.

"However, during the intense exchange of fire, Major Muhammad Awais (age: 31 years, resident of District Narowal), who was leading his troops from the front, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced Shahadat," said the statement.

The ISPR added that in a third encounter that took place in the South Waziristan district, the security forces successfully neutralised six terrorists while injuring eight others.

Sanitisation operations were being carried out to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area as security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism, said the statement.

Pakistan has been reeling from increased terrorist attacks since the return of Taliban government in neighbouring Afghanistan and the two adjoining provinces are the worst-hit

The third quarter of 2024 (July-September) witnessed a sharp uptick in fatalities in terrorist violence and counter-terrorism campaigns with a 90% surge in violence, according to a report issued by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS).

A total of 722 people were killed, including civilians, security personnel, and outlaws, while 615 others were wounded in as many as 328 incidents recorded during the period under review.

Nearly 97% of these fatalities occurred in KP and Balochistan — marking the highest percentage in a decade, and over 92% of these incidents of terror attacks and security forces’ operations were recorded in the same provinces.

The total fatalities from three quarters of this year have now surpassed the total fatalities recorded for the entire 2023; the number of fatalities rose to at least 1,534 in the first three quarters compared to 1,523 in 2023.

ASI begins excavation of Mrityu Kup in Sambhal

Dec 27, 2024

The administration in this Uttar Pradesh district on Thursday commenced the renovation and excavation of the ancient “Mrityu Kup” (well of death) at Kot Purvi, located within the Sambhal Kotwali police station area.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to identify and restore wells that are believed to hold great religious and spiritual significance.

According to locals, the well was abandoned several years ago and filled with debris, which will be cleared.

The well is not only a historic landmark but also a sacred site where devotees believe they can attain salvation by bathing, the locals claim.

The well is deeply-embedded in the region’s spiritual fabric, with locals holding it in high regard for its mythological importance.

“Thursday marks the beginning of the excavation of the Mrityu Kup, a very ancient and revered site. The excavation is being carried out with the cooperation of the Nagar Palika. The well is immensely popular and its renovation will further strengthen our faith. The district administration has been highly supportive in ensuring the development of this important cultural and religious landmark,” the local councillor said.

Sambhal SDM said, accompanied by a team from the ASI, she visited the Bhadrika Ashram Tirtha and Chaturmukh Kup in Hauz Bhadde Sarai. “After further study, the team will determine its age and give recommendations for its preservation,” the SDM said.

Babri-era Kashi-Mathura trailer takes sinister shape in VHP film, vows to 'liberate' temples

J.P. Yadav

27.12.24

The vociferous and divisive cry that accompanied the razing of the Babri Masjid in December 1992 has resumed to echo from Hindutva precincts in the December of 2024: “Abhi toh pehli jhaanki hai, Kashi-Mathura baaki hai! Yeh pehli angraai hai, Aagey aur ladaai hai! (Ayodhya is just a trailer, Kashi and Mathura are there for the taking. This is the first salvo, there are more battles ahead.)”

Sensing that the third tenure of the Modi government could be the most opportune moment for the Hindutva project whose bugle was sounded in the Ram temple movement-era slogan, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday said the temple-mosque disputes across the country could “possibly” have been avoided had the Muslims voluntarily given up their claim on Kashi (Varanasi) and Mathura. The VHP, a unit of the RSS that had spearheaded the Ram temple movement, announced the launch of a drive to free temples from government control.

“A Dharma Sansad held in Delhi in 1984 had demanded that Muslims voluntarily hand over Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura to the Hindus. The court gave Ayodhya to the Hindus but Mathura and Kashi remain,” VHP secretary-general (organisation) Milind Parande said on Thursday, replying to questions on the disputes being raked up over allegations that Mughal-era mosques had been built by razing temples. Multiple appeals have been filed in courts, including over shrines located in Mathura and Varanasi, demanding that the land on which the mosques stand be handed over to Hindus.

“Those who are talking about conflicts today should recall that in 1984 it was said that ‘yeh teen de do toh baaki sab shaant ho jaayega (Give us these three, then there will be peace)’. It was in 1984 and now it’s almost 2025. The aakrosh (outcry) we see today could possibly be linked to this,” Parande said, reaffirming the VHP’s commitment to “liberating” Kashi and Mathura after the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The VHP leader’s remarks come against the backdrop of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement expressing concern over post-Ayodhya temple-mosque controversies, a stand that has been snubbed by some key Hindu seers. The RSS-linked weekly, the Organiser, has in an editorial appeared to rebut Bhagwat, terming the push to look for temples under mosques as a quest for “civilisational justice”.

“A truthful understanding of history is vital for achieving civilisational justice, promoting peace and harmony among all communities. The time is ripe to address this quest for civilisational justice,” the Organiser editorial published on Wednesday said. The magazine’s cover story ison Sambhal.

Asked about Bhagwat’s statement, VHP’s Parande sought to be diplomatic, saying the RSS chief’s comments should be seen in the “right context” of his past utterances on Kashi and Mathura.

Parande sought to underline that Bhagwat had more than once stressed the importance of Kashi and Mathura for Hindus, obliquely hinting that if Hindus get control of the two holy sites, other disputes would not arise.

“Respected Bhagwatji has in the past given many statements regarding Kashi and Mathura…. His present statement should be linked with the statements in the past and seen in the right context,” Parande said.

“He (Bhagwat) had expressed eagerness about Kashi and Mathura…. Maybe because these two issues were not getting resolved, so the outcry among Hindus,” the VHP leader added.

The increasingly shrill demand for surveys of Mughal-era mosques, sparked by the violence linked to such an exercise at the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal that claimed four lives on November 24, has created ripples in the wider Sangh Parivar. The discord in the saffron family has deepened after RSS chief Bhagwat spoke against raking up communal disputes.

The disputes over the Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah in Mathura are currently being fought in courts. Although the RSS has avoided any active role in the controversies, the VHP has been firmly pursuing the matter. In September, the VHP had organised a meeting to discuss the Kashi-Mathura legal tangle. As many as 30 retired judges of the Supreme Court and different high courts, along with Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, participated in the meeting.

While asserting that Kashi and Mathura remain on the agenda of the VHP, Parande announced that on January 5 a countrywide “awakening campaign” would be launched from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh to “liberate” temples from the control of state governments.

“All state governments should detach themselves from the control, management and daily work of temples because such activities are discriminatory towards the Hindu society. We are going to start a countrywide public awareness campaign from January 5 at a huge gathering in Vijayawada,” Parande said.

The Sangh Parivar plans to use the “temple liberation movement” to spread its wings in the south as most southern states have control over their temples.

JD(U)’s word of advice for BJP after protest over ‘Ishwar Allah tero naam’: ‘Follow Gandhian socialism envisaged by Vajpayee’

by Santosh Singh , LALMANI VERMA & SANTOSH SINGH

December 27, 2024

After a folk singer faced protests for singing the lines “Ishwar Allah tero naam” during her rendition of Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, at a function in Patna to commemorate the life of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the ruling JD(U) has offered a word of advice for its ally BJP – “follow Gandhian socialism as envisaged by Vajpayee.”

The protests on Wednesday against noted folk singer Devi, by around 50 people in the crowd, had prompted a sharp reaction from BJP leader and former Union minister under Vajpayee, Shahnawaz Hussain, who called the disruption “the height of intolerance”. Former Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, who had organised the event along with the NGO Dinker Shodh Sansthan, said the incident “should not have happened”.

Speaking to The Indian Express on Friday, JD(U)’s chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, “Raghupati Raghav along with Vaishnav Jan are favourite Gandhi bhajans, sung all across the world wherever Indian diaspora is present. The protest of Raghupati Raghav is unacceptable and condemnable. After all, it was Vajpayee who adopted Gandhian socialism to reinforce his cohesive and assimilative politics. Let BJP follow Gandhian socialism as envisaged by AB Vajpayee.”

“Mahatma Gandhi is deeply embedded in the politics of our leader Nitish Kumar. From organising the grand 150th-anniversary celebrations to making a Gandhi memorial building, Bapu Tower, to calling the biggest auditorium in Patna Bapu Sabhagar, Gandhi’s ideals are practised and emulated,” he said.

Another senior JD(U) leader said on condition of anonymity, “Since the function was organised by senior BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the onus was on him not to invite people who could create a ruckus over such a pious and secular bhajan. It is good that Choubey tried to do damage control. But it was sad to see a singer having to apologise at a function organised to commemorate Vajpayee, arguably BJP’s most moderate face.”

A senior BJP leader, however, responded, “What happened was unfortunate. Our senior leaders who were present at the occasion, from Sanjay Paswan to Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, have already condemned it. Ashwini Kumar Choubey has said the protest was uncivil. The matter should be put to rest now.”

Qatar Strongly Condemns storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli Minister of National Security

Published: 26 Dec 2024

Doha, Qatar|: The State of Qatar condemned in the strongest terms the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by the Israeli Minister of National Security under the protection of the occupation authorities.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the repeated attempts to undermine the religious and historical status of Al-Aqsa Mosque are not only an attack on the Palestinians, but on more than two billion Muslims worldwide.

In this context, the ministry also warned against the continued escalation policy adopted by the Israeli government in the occupied Palestinian territories, and its impact on expanding the circle of violence in the region and undermining efforts to achieve a two-state solution and comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace.

The ministry reiterated the State of Qatar's firm stance on the justice of the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the fraternal Palestinian people, including the full right to practice their religious rituals without restrictions and to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

UN chief condemns ‘escalation’ between Yemen’s Houthis and Israel

December 26, 2024

NEW YORK: The UN chief on Thursday denounced the “escalation” in hostilities between Yemen’s Houthi militias and Israel, terming strikes on the Sanaa airport “especially alarming.”

“The Secretary-General condemns the escalation between Yemen and Israel. Israeli airstrikes today on Sana’a International Airport, the Red Sea ports and power stations in Yemen are especially alarming,” said a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement.

Israeli air strikes pummeled Sanaa’s international airport and other targets in Yemen on Thursday, with Houthi militia media reporting six deaths.

The attack came a day after the Houthis fired a missile and two drones at Israel.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media he was at the airport during the strike, with the UN saying that a member of its air crew was injured.

The United Nations put the death toll from the airport strikes at three, with “dozens more injured.”

UN chief Guterres expressed particular alarm at the threat that bombing transportation infrastructure posed to humanitarian aid operations in Yemen, where 80 percent of the population is dependent on aid.

“The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the risk of further escalation in the region and reiterates his call for all parties concerned to cease all military actions and exercise utmost restraint,” he said.

“He also warns that airstrikes on Red Sea ports and Sana’a airport pose grave risks to humanitarian operations at a time when millions of people are in need of life-saving assistance.”

The UN chief condemned the Houthi militias for “a year of escalatory actions... in the Red Sea and the region that threaten civilians, regional stability and freedom of maritime navigation.”

The Houthis are part of Iran’s “axis of resistance” alliance against Israel.

Brother of suspected ‘terrorist’ stabs Tunisia National Guard officer

December 27, 2024

TUNIS: The brother of a suspected “terrorist” on Thursday stabbed a Tunisian National Guard officer in the eastern Monastir governorate, a judicial source told AFP.

Earlier in the day, a National Guard unit attempted to arrest the suspect — accused by authorities of being a member of a “terrorist group” — at his home, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

During the arrest operation, his brother attacked the officer, the source added.

The source said the officer was hospitalized following the stabbing in his abdomen and was recovering after undergoing surgery.

An investigation was opened by the judicial division combatting terrorism, the source added.

Neither of the brothers, both of whom were taken into police custody, have been named, and the Tunisian interior ministry did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.

Tunisia saw a surge in jihadist groups after the 2011 revolution that overthrew the dictatorship of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Attacks claimed by jihadists in recent years have killed dozens of soldiers and police officers, as well as some civilians and foreign tourists.

Jihadist attacks in Sousse and the capital Tunis in 2015 killed dozens of tourists and police, but authorities say they have since made significant progress against extremism.

Palestinian hospital director says Israeli strike kills 5 staff in Gaza

December 26, 2024

GAZA STRIP: Five staff at one of northern Gaza’s last functioning hospitals were killed by an Israeli strike on Thursday, the facility’s director said, more than two months into an Israeli operation in the area.

Hossam Abu Safiya, head of the Kamal Adwan hospital in Beit Lahia, said “an Israeli strike resulted in five martyrs among the hospital staff.” The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Israel has been pressing a major offensive in northern Gaza since October 6, saying it aims to prevent Hamas militants from regrouping.

At the other end of the Palestinian territory, the chief paediatric doctor at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis said three babies had died from a “severe temperature drop” this week as winter cold sets in.

Doctor Ahmed Al-Farra said the most recent case was a three-week-old girl who was “brought to the emergency room with a severe temperature drop, which led to her death.”

A three-day-old baby and another “less than a month old” died on Tuesday, he said.

Meanwhile, in central Gaza, a Palestinian TV channel affiliated with a militant group said five of its journalists were killed on Thursday in an Israeli strike on their vehicle in Gaza, with Israel’s military saying it had targeted a “terrorist cell.”

Witnesses said a missile struck the van while it was parked outside Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat.

The three-week-old girl, Sila Al-Faseeh, was living in a tent in Al-Mawasi, an area designated a humanitarian safe zone by the Israeli military that is home to huge numbers of displaced Palestinians.

“The tents do not protect from the cold, and it gets very cold at night, with no way to keep warm,” said Farra.

He said many mothers were suffering from malnutrition which affected the quality of their breast milk and compounded the risks to newborns.

Sila’s father Mahmoud Al-Faseeh said it was “extremely cold, and the tent is not suitable for living. The children are always sick.”

The United Nations and other organizations have repeatedly decried the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, particularly in the north, since Israel began its latest military offensive in early October.

The World Health Organization has described conditions at Kamal Adwan hospital as “appalling” and said it was operating at a “minimum” level.

Earlier on Thursday, Gaza’s civil defense agency said that five other people had been killed by Israeli strikes during the day in the north of Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said a 35-year-old soldier was killed in the central Gaza Strip. It brings to 390 the number of Israeli soldiers killed since the start of ground operations in the Palestinian territory.

The journalists’ employer Al-Quds Today said in a statement that a missile hit their broadcast van while it was parked in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

The channel is affiliated with Islamic Jihad, whose militants have fought alongside Hamas in the Gaza Strip and took part in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the war.

The station identified the five staffers as Faisal Abu Al-Qumsan, Ayman Al-Jadi, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh Khalil, Fadi Hassouna and Mohammed Al-Ladaa.

They were killed “while performing their journalistic and humanitarian duty,” the statement said.

The Israeli military said it had conducted a “precise strike” and that those killed “were Islamic Jihad operatives posing as journalists.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists’ Middle East arm said in a statement it was “devastated by the reports.”

“Journalists are civilians and must always be protected,” it added.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said last week that more than 190 journalists had been killed and at least 400 injured since the start of the war in Gaza.

The war was triggered by the Hamas-led October 7 attack last year, which resulted in 1,208 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 45,399 people in Gaza, a majority of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the UN considers reliable.

Israeli attorney general orders probe into report that alleged Netanyahu’s wife harassed opponents

December 26, 2024

JERUSALEM: Israel’s attorney general has ordered police to open an investigation into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife on suspicion of harassing political opponents and witnesses in the Israeli leader’s corruption trial.

The Israeli Justice Ministry made the announcement in a terse message late Thursday, saying the investigation would focus on the findings of a recent report by the “Uvda” investigative program into Sara Netanyahu.

The program uncovered a trove of WhatsApp messages in which Mrs. Netanyahu appears to instruct a former aide to organize protests against political opponents and to intimidate Hadas Klein, a key witness in the trial.

The announcement did not mention Mrs. Netanyahu by name, and the Justice Ministry declined further comment.

But in a video released earlier Thursday, Netanyahu listed what he said were the many kind and charitable acts by his wife and blasted the Uvda report as “lies.”

It was the latest in a long line of legal troubles for the Netanyahus — highlighted by the prime minister's ongoing corruption trial.

Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of cases alleging he exchanged favors with powerful media moguls and wealthy associates. Netanyahu denies the charges and says he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by overzealous prosecutors, police and the media.

Israeli incursion into Wadi Al-Hujeir raises fears of revived Israeli buffer zone

NAJIA HOUSSARI

December 26, 2024

BEIRUT: On Thursday, Israeli forces advanced into the Lebanese border area through Al-Qantara and Aadchit Al-Qusayr, heading toward Wadi Al-Hujeir. The incursion lasted several hours.

Israeli tanks were seen heading into Wadi Al-Hujeir. The incursion, carried out in broad daylight, prompted warnings from the Lebanese army and UNIFIL.

The Lebanese army said: “The Israeli enemy continues its violations of the ceasefire agreement, attacking Lebanon’s sovereignty, its citizens, and destroying southern villages and towns.” UNIFIL, meanwhile, said that “any actions threatening the fragile cessation of hostilities must stop.”

The Israeli incursion into Wadi Al-Hujeir is the first of its kind since Oct. 1, the start of Israel’s ground war in Lebanon, and since the ceasefire came into effect on Nov. 27.

Wadi Al-Hujeir is a rugged valley in Jabal Amel, adjacent to the Israeli border. It lies between the districts of Marjayoun, Bint Jbeil, and Nabatieh. The valley extends from the Litani River in Qaaqaait Al-Jisr below the city of Nabatieh to the town of Aitaroun in the Bint Jbeil district. Several towns surround it, including Al-Qantara, Aalman, Al-Ghandourieh, Majdal Selm, Qabrikha, Touline, and Taybeh.

A Lebanese security source expressed concern, stating: “This incursion into previously untouched areas, accompanied by extensive combing operations, (is) a significant expansion of the Israeli enemy’s occupation map and recalls the border zone Israel established in the 1970s through firepower and occupation, which it withdrew from entirely in 2000.”

The incursion forced families in Al-Qantara to flee to Al-Ghandourieh, at the western edge of the valley.

The Israeli army also erected earthen berms between Wadi Al-Hujeir and Wadi Saluki to block the valley road.

In response, the Lebanese army closed the road leading to Wadi Al-Hujeir at the Froun intersection in the Qaaqaait Al-Jisr area to ensure the safety of civilians. The municipalities of Majdal Selm, Qabrikha, and Touline advised residents to avoid using the valley road.

During the incursion, Israeli forces shot Lebanese citizen Hussam Fawaz from Tebnine while he was on his way to work at the Indonesian battalion’s headquarters, part of UNIFIL, in Aadchit Al-Qusayr. He was hit in the head while driving his car, abducted by the Israeli forces, and later handed over, wounded, to UNIFIL and the Lebanese Red Cross.

The Lebanese army command stated: “Israeli forces advanced into several points in the areas of Al-Qantara, Aadchit Al-Qusayr, and Wadi Al-Hujeir. The army reinforced its presence in these areas and the army command continues to monitor the situation in coordination with UNIFIL and the quintet committee overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.”

UNIFIL underlined its role in supporting both countries to ensure the area south of the Litani River is free of any armed personnel, assets or weapons other than those of the government of Lebanon and UNIFIL, as well as respect for the Blue Line.

UNIFIL said: “There is concern at continuing destruction by the IDF (Israeli forces) in residential areas, agricultural land, and road networks in south Lebanon. This is in violation of resolution 1701.”

In the afternoon, it was reported that the Israeli forces that infiltrated into Lebanese territory, withdrew toward Wadi Saluki.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army continued using machine guns to strafe the border towns it had infiltrated, especially from Maroun Al-Ras toward Bint Jbeil. It also targeted the Aita Al-Shaab town with artillery shelling.

According to security reports, “the Israeli army was surprised by the scale of tunnels built by Hezbollah in the border area and the number that has been discovered. It is racing against time to uncover the remaining ones, destroy them and bulldoze Hezbollah’s facilities before the end of the 60-day period, half of which has already passed, for a complete withdrawal under the ceasefire agreement.”

The security source stated: “The Israeli army seems to lack confidence in the Lebanese army’s ability to destroy these Hezbollah facilities when it is deployed in the border area. It is determined to carry out this mission before its withdrawal.”

On Thursday, Israeli media reported that the “Israeli army is preparing for the possibility of remaining in southern Lebanon beyond the 60 days outlined in the ceasefire agreement.”

The Israeli Haaretz newspaper reported that the army “has begun establishing infrastructure for military posts along the northern border, with some of them located on the Lebanese side of the border.” It added: “During 30 days, the Israeli army killed 44 Hezbollah members who violated the ceasefire agreement — according to the army — carried out 25 attacks on Lebanese sites and recorded 120 violations of the agreement by the Lebanese side.”

On the Lebanese front, Hezbollah MP Ali Fayyad said: “The Israeli incursion toward Wadi al-Hujair is a highly dangerous development and a serious threat to the implementation of Resolution 1701.”

He called on the Lebanese state, “the government, army and concerned parties, to review the current performance, which has shown a complete failure to curb Israel’s continued hostilities.”

MP Kassem Hashem, from the Amal Movement bloc, described Israel’s incursion as “an occupation of additional areas of Lebanese territory and an attack on Lebanese sovereignty in light of the ceasefire agreement supervised by international entities with presence and influence.”

He said that “if such violations continue at this level, it is considered an occupation, and Lebanon has the right to defend its sovereignty and national dignity.”

Israeli strikes kill three in Yemen as Netanyahu fires warning

December 26, 2024

SANAA: Israeli air strikes pummelled Sanaa’s international airport and other targets in Yemen on Thursday, leaving three people dead, a day after the latest attacks on Israel by the Iran-backed Houthis.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was at the airport during the strike, he said, adding that “one of our plane’s crew members was injured.”

The strikes targeting the airport, military facilities and power stations in Houthi areas follow rising hostilities between Israel and the militia.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel’s strikes would “continue until the job is done.”

“We are determined to cut this branch of terrorism from the Iranian axis of evil,” he said in a video statement.

His defense minister Israel Katz said Israel would “hunt down all the Houthi leaders... No one will be able to escape us.”

Tedros, who was in Yemen to seek the release of detained UN staff and assess the humanitarian situation in war-torn Yemen, said he and his team were about to board their flight when “the airport came under aerial bombardment.”

He said the air traffic control tower, departure lounge and runway were damaged in the strike.

The Houthi-held capital’s airport was struck by “more than six” attacks with raids also targeting the adjacent Al-Dailami air base, a witness told AFP.

A series of strikes were also fired at a power station in Hodeida, a witness and the Iran-backed Houthis’ official Al-Masirah TV station said.

Two people died and 11 were wounded at the Houthi-held capital’s airport, and one person was killed and three were missing at Ras Issa port, Houthi statements said.

Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam called the strikes, a day after the Houthis fired a missile and two drones at Israel, “a Zionist crime against all the Yemeni people.”

The Israeli military said its “fighter jets conducted intelligence-based strikes on military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime.”

The targets included “military infrastructure” at the airport and power stations in Sanaa and Hodeida, as well as other facilities at Hodeida, Salif and Ras Kanatib ports, an Israeli statement said.

“These military targets were used by the Houthi terrorist regime to smuggle Iranian weapons into the region and for the entry of senior Iranian officials,” the statement said.

Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is fighting Israel in the Gaza Strip, condemned the attack as an “aggression” against its “brothers from Yemen.”

On Saturday, days ahead of Wednesday’s missile and drone strike on Israel, 16 people were wounded by a Houthi attack in Tel Aviv.

The incident prompted a warning from Netanyahu, who said he ordered the destruction of the group’s infrastructure.

The Houthis have fired a series of missiles and drones at Israel since the eruption of war in Gaza in October last year, claiming solidarity with the Palestinians.

The Houthis have also waged a months-long campaign against shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Scores of drone and missile attacks on cargo ships have prompted a series of reprisal strikes by US and sometimes British forces.

Israel has also previously struck the Houthis in Yemen, including hitting ports and energy facilities, after Houthi attacks against its territory.

In July, a Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv killed an Israeli civilian, prompting retaliatory strikes on Hodeida.

Last week, before the latest volley of attacks, Netanyahu said the Houthis would “pay a very heavy price” for their strikes on Israel.

Yunnan, Why Hui Muslims Protested the Arrest of Imam Ma Yuwei

12/27/2024

Protests in Yunnan this month after the arrest of a well-known Hui imam confirmed that the Chinese government is now cracking down on Muslim Hui communities not strictly aligned with the government-controlled China Islamic Association. It also confirmed that Hui Muslims, which were accustomed for decades to a certain limited religious liberty, are not tolerating this state of affairs and are willing to protest publicly.

This month, on December 15 and 16, groups of Hui Muslims assembled in front of the Yuxi Municipal Government in Yunnan Province for two consecutive days to demonstrate against the arrest of an imam by Chinese authorities.

Ma Yuwei serves as the imam of Yuxi Daying Mosque, where he has devoted many years to educating the community on the Quran. He is held in high esteem for his dedication. However, as governmental oversight of religious activities has increased in recent years, he has faced surveillance and threats.

The government determined that the Daying Mosque, where he was employed, was an unauthorized site for religious activities. In May of this year, the Religious Affairs Departments of Yuxi City and Hongta District convened a meeting to caution Ma Yuwei against engaging in unauthorized religious activities and issued an order to cease the Quran study class.

To ensure his safety, Ma Yuwei and his family have remained secluded within the mosque for the past six months, avoiding any public appearances. Reportedly Ma Yuwei has been followed and investigated by unidentified individuals for nearly a year. For safety, he and his father have stayed in the mosque for months, seldom going outside.

At lunchtime on December 15, plainclothes police forcibly took Ma Yuwei from Shuxiang Chuanchuanxiang restaurant in Nie’er Square, Yuxi. Reportedly, the police did not show any arrest warrant or other identification documents during the arrest, and mentioned as the only reason for the arrest was that Ma Yuwei “preached the Quran.”

His brother in Shadian narrowly escaped arrest due to local residents’ strong resistance. Ma Yuwei’s father, Ma Chongguang, and his mother were apprehended at separate locations.

The arrests led to the response from the local Muslim community, who gathered at the city government to request Ma Yuwei’s release.

Beginning early on the morning of the 16th, a significant number of military and police vehicles were deployed from Kunming and the surrounding areas of Yuxi to the protest site. Communication jammers were installed, highways leading to Yuxi were blocked, and Hui Muslims were subjected to questioning, until the protest subsided.

Muslim group brings the Christmas spirit to Bristol's homeless

26 DEC 2024

A social action group have once again taken to the streets of Bristol to bring some much needed festive cheer to rough sleepers.

Muslims4Bristol have hosted their ninth festive food sharing event on Christmas Day. A group of around 20 people provided hot food and drink starting at Jamaica Street in Bristol from midday on December 25.

Homeless feeding on Christmas Day is one of the community initiatives which sees volunteers of different ages and backgrounds - although the majority are Muslims living in the city - come together to share food, drinks and companionship with homeless people during Christmas Day, showing them they are not forgotten.

This is now an annual event following its creation in 2015, which saw Muslim families prepare hot food and drinks to share with Bristolians who are lonely and homeless on Christmas Day.

Mohammed Elsharif who organised this event said: "This an annual tradition where Muslims, for the past nine years, go out on Christmas Day to share this special day with our Bristol brothers and sisters who spend the day alone - we will be their families on such day."

Mohamed A Sayaqle, who is one of the organisers at this event said: "We want to share food, drinks, and company with our fellow Bristolians who are less fortunate to have shelter or family on Christmas Day.

"Sharing food fosters connection within the community, but more importantly, we aim to extend a culture of caring, sharing, and kindness. This is what it’s all about—spending time with them and showing we care and remember them."

Abdul Ahmed, volunteer and organiser said: "Homelessness is challenging, especially during Christmas Day, as the businesses are closed, and a lot of people who are less fortunate may be feeling loneliness. We decided to come out, share food and spend time with them.

"This is my first time feeding homeless people on Christmas Day. It is inspiring, the smile, conversations with homeless people show how small gestures of kindness and generosity can bring happiness and a sense of community and hope with people, and this is one of things I love about Bristol."

Free money won’t make people wealthier – Russian central bank

27 Dec, 2024

Handing out free money to people does not make them richer and is bad for the economy in general, Russia’s central bank has said in response to a question about inflation.

The financial regulator posted a brief lesson in economics on its Q&A section on Telegram, in response to the question, “Why can’t you just print some money and hand it out to everyone?”

“When asking this question, you probably meant that if you print the money and hand it out to all citizens, they will all become wealthier,” the bank said, adding that “such logic does not work for the economy as a whole.”

“Let’s imagine that the state will print some money and give each citizen 1,000 rubles ($10). However, at that moment, the number of goods in the economy will not increase. This means that the supply of goods will stay the same, while the ability to buy them will grow momentarily,” the bank added.

The Russian economy has managed to adapt to sweeping sanctions imposed by Western countries in response to the Ukraine conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his end-of-year press conference earlier this month that inflation poses “certain challenges” and remains the focus of the government. One of the pressing issues is the increase in food prices, especially for vegetables, eggs, and dairy products.

Russia’s inflation rate is hovering slightly above 9%, with GDP growing by 3.6% in 2024, Putin said.

In October, in order to curb inflation, the central bank raised the benchmark interest rate to a record 21%.

Putin reveals secret Biden Ukraine-NATO offer

26 Dec, 2024

US President Joe Biden offered to delay Ukraine’s membership in NATO at the organization’s 2021 summit in Geneva, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Putin spoke with reporters on Thursday after a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC) in St. Petersburg. Asked about rumors in the US about a proposal that would freeze the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he said such talk was nothing new.

“I know that the current President Biden spoke about this, it’s no secret, back in 2021. He proposed exactly this to me – to delay Ukraine’s admission into NATO by 10-15 years, because [Kiev] is not ready yet,” Putin said, referring to the midsummer meeting he had with the US leader in Switzerland.

Kiev’s entry into the US-led military bloc was unacceptable to Moscow “whether it’s in one year or ten years,” the Russian president said. “From the standpoint of history, that’s but a blink of an eye,” he added.

“We, too, are striving to end the conflict,” Putin told the reporters, adding that it should happen by achieving all of Moscow’s military and political objectives.

US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to negotiate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within hours of taking office. While he has declined to discuss any specifics of his proposal, US media have cited several anonymous sources as saying that it could involve “freezing” the conflict along the current front line, something both Moscow and Kiev publicly oppose.

PTI negotiators want talks with govt to reach 'logical conclusion' by Jan 31

December 26, 2024

Following meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan, the PTI negotiation committee on Thursday said that they want the ongoing negotiations with the government to reach a "logical conclusion" by January 31, 2025, reiterating the "legitimate" demands of judicial probe into May 9 and November 26 protests and release of under-trial "political prisoners".

"PTI founder [Imran Khan] is ready to forgive everyone for all the ill-treatment he has suffered for the sake of Pakistan," Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza said while speaking to journalists after meeting the incarcerated former prime minister.

The PTI negotiators briefed Imran on the first round of talks, held on Monday, and consulted him on future strategy, sources told Geo News.

After months of heightened political tensions, the embattled former ruling party and the government finally held their first round of dialogue this week.

The inaugural meeting, on the government's part, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM's Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Farooq Sattar.

Whereas, the PTI was represented by former NA Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

The two sides are set to hold the second session on January 2, when the PTI will present its demands before the government panel in written.

The government-PTI talks are being held in the wake of the former ruling party's announcement of a civil disobedience movement if their demands of release of all political prisoners — including Khan — and the formation of a judicial commission for investigating the May 9 riots and the November 26 incident, go unmet.

The jailed former prime minister had last month called on his supporters to launch the anti-government movement by withholding remittances in the first phase.

Talking to media today, Hamid Raza castigated the authorities for subjecting the PTI workers and supporters to torture, violating the sanctity of chadar and chardiwari of parliamentarians, and stealing the party's mandate on February 8 — the day general elections took place in the country.

"Therefore, the first phase of civil disobedience movement, 'boycott of remittances', would continue," he noted.

Secondly, he said, the timeframe for the ongoing negotiations with the government is Jan 31, adding that they want to take the talks to a logical conclusion before the cutoff time. "Omar Ayub, who is leading the negotiation process, would apprise the government committee of the timeframe on Jan 2," he added.

Furthermore, he said, Imran was ready to forgive the ill-treatments he suffered, including the assassination attempt, for the sake of Pakistan.

The SIC chief said the PTI founder expressed confidence in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and its Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur while calling the parliamentarians "his pride" for "facing the fascism and standing firm".

Speaking of the Kurram issue, Hamid said, Imran held extensive talks with KP CM Gandapur and MWM chief Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and emphasised that the matter should be resolved quickly.

He reiterated the PTI's demands, saying that the opposite side blamed the former ruling party for orchestrating the riots. "However, we categorically deny the allegations [...] Therefore, a judicial commission should be established to impartially probe the events and CCTV footage should be brought to the fore," he added.

Raza claimed that some "specific elements" were inciting the May 9 protesters to move towards "specific targets". Referring to Nov 26 protest, he also demanded a judicial investigation into the crackdown saying that 13 protesters were confirmed dead while 64 others sustained bullet injuries.

Lastly, the SIC chief said, they do not want Imran's release "as a result of the deal". "We want the release of PTI founder in accordance with the law and Consitution," he added.

The first round of talks ended with the government accepting the former ruling party's demand to consult its incarcerated party founder who has been behind bars in Adiala Jail for over a year.

The current government-PTI talks are being held following the latter's last month's announcement of a civil disobedience movement if their demands were not met.

Military convicts 60 more people over May 9 riots

Baqir Sajjad Syed

December 27, 2024

• Imran’s nephew Hassaan Niazi, two retired army, PAF officers among those sentenced

• Latest batch marks conclusion of trials for those held in military custody

• Total of 85 civilians sentenced to two to 10 years of ‘rigorous imprisonment’

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army announced on Thursday that the remaining 60 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) activists have been convicted by the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) for their involvement in the May 9 violent protests.

“The Field General Court Martial has promulgated the punishments to the following remaining 60 culprits after examining all evidence, ensuring the provision of all legal rights to the convicts, completion of due process and the appropriate legal proceedings,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, said in a statement.

Those sentenced include Hassaan Khan Niazi, a nephew of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, and two retired armed forces officers. Days earlier, 25 others were sentenced on the same charges.

All the 85 men were sentenced to between two and 10 years of “rigorous imprisonment”, marking the conclusion of trials for those held in military custody over the attacks on army installations and monuments.

Overall, 16 individuals were sentenced to 10 years, 11 for nine years, two for eight years, six for seven years, 10 for six years, two for five years, 13 for four years, three for three years, and 22 for two years.

The retired officers whose convictions were announced on Thursday included Javed Akram, a 76-year-old retired brigadier who received six-year rigorous imprisonment for his role in the Jinnah House attack. He was the oldest person tried by the FGCM for the attacks.

Also sentenced was Group Captain Viqas Ahmed Mohsin, a retired Air Force officer who was given a two-year sentence for being involved in the same incident. Both officers had retired at the time of the May 9 riots.

Among other notable individuals was PTI leader Abbad Farooq, whose case drew controversy following the death of his son, Ammar Abad Farooq, last year following his arrest. Abbad has received a two-year rigorous imprisonment.

Additionally, Mian Muhammad Akram Usman, a former PTI MPA from 2018–2023 and whose father remained an MNA from 1988–1993, was awarded a two-year sentence in the same case.

Haider Majeed, a PTI lawyer, also received a two-year sentence for his role in the attack. Mr Majeed was arrested together with Hasaan Niazi from Abbottabad.

‘Sentencing adheres to SC ruling’

The military noted that the sentencing adheres to the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench ruling of Dec 13, which conditionally permitted the announcement of FGCM verdicts in civilian cases related to the May 9 attacks.

According to the bench’s ruling, these verdicts remain subject to the final decision on appeals against the Oct 23, 2023, Supreme Court verdict that declared the trials of civilians by FGCM null and void, striking down Section 2(1d) of the Army Act, which authorised such proceedings.

The May 9 riots erupted following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case. Hundreds of PTI workers were detained, and a total of 105 cases were referred for trial in military courts. Prior to these recent verdicts, 20 individuals sentenced to less than three years in prison were released in April, ahead of Eidul Fitr, following a remission granted by Army Chief Gen Asim Munir.

“The trial of the May 9 accused under military custody has now concluded under relevant laws,” ISPR said.

The announcement of the first batch of verdicts drew strong condemnation from the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States, which criticised the trials as inconsistent with democratic norms and human rights standards. Concerns were also raised about the transparency and fairness of the proceedings.

Former PM Imran Khan, in a statement from Adiala Jail, rejected the sentencing of civilians by FGCM as unconstitutional, alluding to the international criticism.

“These decisions are tarnishing Pakistan’s international reputation, and such inhumane actions could subject the country to economic sanctions. Such decisions are a slap in the face of the so-called ‘constitutional bench’,” he said, referring to the Supreme Court’s newly formed bench after the 26th Amendment.

“All convicts retain the right to appeal and pursue other legal remedies, as guaranteed by the Constitution and the law,” the ISPR added.

While international criticism has not deterred the military from concluding the trials, the latest statement on the sentencing was notably less assertive compared to the previous announcement. Earlier rhetoric about pursuing the “masterminds and planners” of the May 9 incidents was absent from the latest media release.

“The nation, government and armed forces remain committed to upholding justice and ensuring the inviolable writ of the state,” the ISPR said.

Meanwhile, former ISI chief Faiz Hameed, who is facing court-martial proceedings over his alleged misuse of authority, involvement in politics and violation of the anti-espionage law, is also being investigated by the military for May 9 events. Moreover, government officials have hinted at the possibility of PTI founder Imran Khan being subjected to FGCM for similar allegations.

FO parries questions on air strikes, US official’s comments

Iftikhar A. Khan

December 27, 2024

ISLAMABAD: Amid a flurry of activity on the diplomatic front, the year-end press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday left several questions unanswered, as the Foreign Office spokesperson parried queries regarding recent air strikes on Afghanistan, as well as pro-Imran Khan statements from an official of the incoming Donald Trump administration.

Responding to a volley of questions about voices from the US, including President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming aide, Richard Grenell, demanding Imran Khan’s release, FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said she would not like to comment on “anyone making statements in their individual capacity”.

“We would like to have positive, constructive relations with the United States on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and non-interference in each other’s domestic affairs… We will continue to engage with officials and public personalities in the United States and discuss with them, issues of mutual interest and mutual concern,” she remarked.

Talking about the recent sanctions imposed on three commercial entities and one government entity involved with Pakistan’s missile programme, she said these measures were taken by US authorities unilaterally and were not the result of bilateral discussions or negotiations.

“We believe these unilateral measures are unfounded and irrational. It is important that in taking such measures, the United States shall take into account strategic stability in South Asia,” the spokesperson added.

She reiterated that Pakistan’s strategic and missile programme eas defensive in nature. “It is not at all directed against the United States or any other country. It is regional in context, it’s a modest programme. So we do not understand the logic that this modest programme of a friendly country in South Asia could somehow threaten the security of a superpower,” she remarked.

Military trials

Responding to questions about strong statements from Western capitals regarding the recent conviction of civilians by military courts — and the threat of Pakistan losing its GSP-plus status — Ms Baloch said that Pakistan was fully committed to its international human rights obligations.

She reassured the international community that those sentenced by court martial would be afforded remedy by the country’s legal system and reaffirmed commitment to “international human rights obligations”.

“Pakistani system has the remedy of judicial review by Superior Courts, and it guarantees promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. We will continue to uphold our Constitution and Pakistani law and our obligations under international law,” she said.

She also underlined that Pakistan’s relations with the European Union were multifaceted. “This is a mutually beneficial relationship. It is not a one agenda relationship. We will continue to work with the European Union to promote this relationship and to move forward.”

Afghanistan airstrikes

Although multiple questions were posed to her regarding the recent air strikes, claimed by security officials as having targeted camps of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, she avoided directly confirming the action.

However, she maintained that Pakistan’s security and law enforcement personnel do conduct operations in the border areas to protect the people of Pakistan from terror groups, including the TTP.

“These operations are carefully selected and are based on authentic and concrete intelligence,” she said, without elaborating.

She was also asked about the apparent disconnect in diplomacy and military actions — as Special Representative for Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq was in Kabul for talks the day of the air strike.

But sidestepping the question, she maintained that the special envoy had discussed all matters relating to the terror groups with Afghan leaders, adding that Pakistan believed in dialogue and diplomacy and had prioritised diplomacy in its dealings with Afghanistan.

Karachi Bar Association joins ranks of challengers of 26th amendment

Nasir Iqbal

December 27, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The Karachi Bar Association (KBA) on Thursday joined the league of petitioners who have challenged the 26th amendment before the Supreme Court.

It said that since the status of the amendment has yet to be decided, therefore, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), the constitutional bench as well as its proceedings were all non est and a nullity in law.

Moved through senior counsel Faisal Siddiqi, the KBA argued that the amendment was against fundamental rights and contrary to the principles of independence of judiciary, federalism and separation of powers.

The petition claimed that the amendment was passed in a manner contrary to the constitution and law and is thus, non est. Therefore, it said, the apex court should strike down the amendment, all acts based on it, decisions, notifications, proceedings or superstructure by any person, authority or body since these were void ab initio and have no legal effect.

The SC should also declare Sections 7, 9, 12, 14, 17 and 21 of the 26th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2024, to be ultra vires to the Constitution. It said that several petitions have been filed before the SC against the 26th amendment, but hearing has not been fixed before the constitutional bench.

The petition contended that the challenge was a public interest litigation, adding that its subject matter includes issues of politicising of judiciary, encroachment upon powers of judiciary, disenfranchisement of provinces and substantive unconstitutionalities that occurred during its passage.

Referring to the procedural lapses in the passage of the amendment, the petition contended that the government had failed to publish the bill in the official gazette or allow public consultation, violating Article 19-A (right to information).

Condemnation rejected

In a separate move, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) took exception to the condemnation issued by the All Pakistan Lawyers Action Committee, regretting the extension of the constitutional bench for another six month.

SCBA president Mian Mohammad Rauf Atta took exception to the condemnation issued by what he described as the so-called representatives of All Pakistan Lawyers Action Committee, regretting extension of the SC’s constitutional bench for another six months orchestrated by an allegedly executive-dominated JCP.

In a statement, Mr Atta refuted their allegations regarding the JCP’s Dec 21 meeting. He said the SCBA appreciates the JCP proceedings comprising extensive discussions for over eight hours, which resulted in the extension of the constitutional bench for an additional six months.

“We reiterate our full support [for] and confidence in the esteemed members of JCP, its Chairman, and the head of the Constitutional Bench,” he said.

He said the SCBA believes that the introduction of the 26th amendment had secured the independence of judiciary and the formation of constitutional bench has significantly reduced the backlog in the apex court, facilitating faster and more effective justice for the public.

Earlier, the All Pakistan Lawyers Action Committee for the Restoration of Constitutional Rule had condemned the extension and composition of the constitutional bench, orchestrated by the executive-dominated JCP.

The committee said it supports judicial integrity and commends Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail for aligning with Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar in emphasising that SC’s all judges should be part of the constitutional bench.

The statement was endorsed by senior counsel and SCBA’s previous presidents, including Hamid Khan, Qazi Mohammad Anwar, Muneer A. Malik, Abid S. Zuberi, Ali Ahmed Kurd and others.

Political leaders hail Benazir as champion of democracy

December 27, 2024

KARACHI: The president, Senate chairman, National Assembly speaker and other leaders hailed former prime minister Benazir Bhutto as a champion of democracy on her 17th death anniversary, recalling her struggle for the oppressed.

The PPP leader was assassinated on December 27, 2007, at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh.

In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari said Ms Bhutto “embodied the spirit of hope, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy and justice”.

She was a trailblazer who dreamt of a Pakistan where the rights of all citizens, irrespective of colour, class and creed, would be protected, and the power of the people would reign supreme, said Mr Zardari, the late prime minister’s spouse.

He said Ms Bhutto believed in the “transformative power” of people and envisioned a Pakistan where every child could access education, women could progress as equals, and justice was not a privilege but a right.

“Throughout her life, she raised her voice and worked for the uplift of the downtrodden segments of society and women’s empowerment.”

He reaffirmed the commitment to advancing her vision of a peaceful, progressive and democratic Pakistan.

Ms Bhutto sacrificed her life for the cause of democracy and Pakistan, he said, urging the nation to work together towards realising her dream of a “peaceful, progressive, and democratic Pakistan”.

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani paid tribute to the slain leader and lauded her as a steadfast symbol of democracy.

Ms Bhutto “set a new benchmark for democracy, equality, and human rights, not only in Pakistan but across the globe,” Mr Gillani said.

He praised her unwavering dedication to democratic values, stating that her political struggle and principled leadership will “forever remain a guiding light for the people of Pakistan”.

PPP Chairman and Ms Bhutto’s son, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, said her mother’s life was an embodiment of courage, resilience, and hope for millions of Pakistanis.

A press release issued by the media cell of Bilawal House quoted the PPP chairman as saying: “Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto envisioned a Pakistan where every citizen would have equal opportunities and access to resources, irrespective of their background.

“We are determined to follow her philosophy of human liberty and democratic norms, continuing our fight against terrorism, extremism, and any forces that threaten Pakistan’s stability.”

In their messages, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa Shah lauded the late PM’s contribution to democracy.

Speaker Sadiq called for adhering to Ms Bhutto’s legacy of promoting reconciliation and strengthening democracy.

Deputy Speaker Shah said Ms Bhutto was an “exemplary leader” who played a pivotal role in the restoration of democracy and provided political, social, and educational awareness to the public.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also paid tribute to Ms Bhutto, saying her legacy “will never be forgotten”.

“Today, we remember her sacrifice and pledge to follow her path, striving to give Pakistan the position it deserves,” said Mr Kundi.

PPP Vice-President Senator Sherry Rehman said the late PM “reshaped” Pakistan’s political and social landscape.

“Her loss was not just a devastating blow to the Pakistan People’s Party; it was an unparalleled tragedy for the nation,” she added.

Over 180 cases of Journalists rights violations recorded in Afghanistan in 2024: AFJC

By Fidel Rahmati

December 26, 2024

The Afghanistan Journalists Center released its annual report on December 26, 2024, highlighting the challenging situation for media outlets and journalists in the country. The report indicates that 181 cases of journalist rights violations were recorded, and 18 media outlets were shut down due to the Taliban’s repressive policies.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center has reported 181 instances of media rights violations by the Taliban in 2024, as part of its annual report.

The report, released on Thursday, December 26, indicates that 18 media outlets have been shut down due to the Taliban’s repressive policies over the past year.

According to the Center, over 50 journalists were arrested and imprisoned by the Taliban on various charges in 2024.

The center emphasized that the suppression of media freedom has increased by 8% compared to the previous year.

The report further notes that the legal framework for media operations in 2024 remains unclear, with the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture largely sidelined.

The Taliban sent the proposed amendments to the Media Law and the Access to Information Law to Hibatullah Akhundzada, the group’s supreme leader, for approval.

The center also pointed out that the Taliban’s “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law has imposed even stricter restrictions on media, intensifying pressure on journalists.

The Taliban issued at least seven new directives in 2024, compared to only four in 2023. These included bans on filming, restrictions on women’s communication with the media in some provinces, and the prohibition of broadcasting live political programs.

The report highlighted how journalists who defy these directives face threats, imprisonment, or severe penalties, with media outlets often subjected to shutdowns. The Taliban’s control over the media landscape continues to grow, limiting free expression and press freedom across Afghanistan.

Female journalists, in particular, face an even harsher reality, as they are frequently targeted for their involvement in media work. The restrictions imposed on women’s participation in public life have led to a sharp decline in the number of female journalists, with many opting to leave the profession or the country altogether.

This further marginalizes the already vulnerable position of women in Afghanistan, making it difficult for them to contribute to the country’s media landscape and limiting their voices in a time of crisis.

Statement of the Islamic Emirate Regarding the 45th Anniversary of the Soviet Invasion

December 27, 2024

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Forty-five years ago, on 6 Jadi, 1358 of the Solar Hijri calendar, the Soviet Union’s Red Army, with the support of its few local allies, launched an invasion of Afghanistan. This invasion posed a severe threat to the religion, freedom, prosperity, and social security of the Afghan people.

Alhamdulillah, the resilient Afghan nation did not remain silent in the face of this aggression. With unity, determination, and steadfast courage, they stood firm against the Soviet forces, sacrificing their lives, wealth, and everything they owned for the cause of jihad.

As a result of the Afghan people’s sacrifices, hardships, martyrdoms, and unwavering commitment, and with the help of Allah, the once-powerful Soviet forces suffered a humiliating defeat in Afghanistan and were forced to retreat after nine years.

This event demonstrates that the Afghan people are deeply committed to their faith, value their freedom and independence, and are ready to sacrifice everything in defense of their beliefs. This proud nation will stay united, firm in its faith, and triumphant. InshaAllah.

The Islamic Emirate condemns the Soviet invasion on the 6 Jadi, 1358 of the Solar Hijri calendar and honors the jihad and sacrifices of the Afghan people. IEA prays that all martyrs who gave their lives for freedom and independence are granted the highest place in paradise, and that those who were wounded or disabled are richly rewarded for their sacrifices.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan also urges future generations to follow the path of their ancestors, defending their faith and homeland with courage, standing firm against any form of invasion and oppression.

UAE strongly condemns storming of Al Aqsa Mosque by Israeli minister

December 26, 2024

The UAE has strongly condemned the storming of Al Aqsa Mosque by Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli Minister of National Security, under the protection of the Israeli police, which is considered provocative and an incitement against Muslims, as well as an act of extremism.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) reaffirmed the UAE's firm position on the need to provide full protection for Al Aqsa Mosque, and halt serious and provocative violations taking place there.

Furthermore, the Ministry emphasised the need to respect the custodial role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan over the holy sites in accordance with international law and the historical status, and not to compromise the authority of the Jerusalem Endowment Administration that manages the affairs of Al Aqsa Mosque, Qubbat Al Sakhrah (Dome of the Rock), and the surrounding courtyards.

The Ministry also warned against the serious repercussions of the storming and continuous violations committed at Al Aqsa Mosque in light of regional tensions. The UAE called upon Israeli authorities to halt escalation and avoid exacerbating tension and instability in the region, affirming the UAE's categorical rejection of all practices that violate resolutions on international legitimacy threatening further escalation.

Moreover, the Ministry called on the international community to intensify all regional and international efforts to find a serious political horizon that achieves comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, and fulfills the aspirations of the brotherly Palestinian people to establish an independent sovereign Palestinian state, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.

Saudi Arabia slams Israeli minister's storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque

December 26, 2024

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia strongly condemned on Thursday the storming of an extremist Israeli minister into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied East Jerusalem. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Saudi Arabia condemned and denounced the continued Israeli violations including the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by the Israeli Minister of National Security, and the incursion of the Israeli occupation forces into southern Syria.

Saudi Arabia emphasized that these systematic practices in Al-Aqsa Mosque constitute a blatant violation and provocation of the sentiments of Muslims around the world. The ministry also stated that continuing military operations in Syria is an attempt to sabotage Syria's chances of restoring its security and stability.

Israel's extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led settlers in a storming of Al-Aqsa under heavy protection from the Israeli police, marking the start of the so-called Hebrew "Feast of Lights" (Hanukkah). According to media reports, dozens of settlers, led by the far-right minister, entered Al-Aqsa in groups via the Moroccan Gate, performing provocative Talmudic rituals in its courtyards.

Israeli occupation authorities deployed a special unit within the mosque courtyards to secure the incursion and barred Palestinian worshippers from entering during Ben-Gvir's presence. The Israeli police also intensified military measures around Jerusalem's Old City and at Al-Aqsa's gates, obstructing Palestinians from accessing the mosque grounds.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has enjoyed a fruitful year of events and initiatives intended to advance the adoption of artificial intelligence, propelling the Kingdom to the 14th position in the Global AI Index and 1st in the Arab world.

Recently, Saudi Arabia was also ranked third globally in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s AI Policy Observatory, behind the US and the UK. But how did the Kingdom rise to such heights?

The “State of AI in Saudi Arabia” report, unveiled by Abdullah bin Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, the president of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, detailed the Kingdom’s advancements from 2019-23 during the Global AI Summit held in Riyadh in September.

The report provided a comprehensive overview of the Kingdom’s progress in AI, focusing on seven key pillars: regulations and policies, investment, infrastructure, data, talent development, research and innovation, and adoption.

It also highlighted the Saudi Data and AI Authority’s central role in driving the Kingdom’s digital transformation. According to SDAIA’s forecasts, AI is expected to contribute SR58.8 trillion ($15.6 trillion) to the global economy by 2030 and create 98 million jobs by 2025.

Mohammed Al-Qarni, an academic and consultant on AI for business, believes the rapid pace of the Kingdom’s AI adoption has come at “a critical time.”

“It is now or never,” Al-Qarni told Arab News. “Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambition to be a globally competitive nation means that we must proactively utilize the latest technology to our advantage.

“Think of AI as a means to diversify the economy, another Vision 2030 ambition, or to develop globally competitive citizens.

“How rapidly we advance in AI adoption will significantly impact these ambitions. That being said, I think there is a long way to go. As AI is still developing, we must be agile to shape its future, whether in governance and ethics, technical development, or its impact on human lives.”

Al-Qarni said the most impressive advancement in 2024 was the Riyadh Declaration, a document announced during the 19th session of the Internet Governance Forum, hosted by Saudi Arabia and organized by the UN.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the declaration focuses on AI with its inclusive, innovative, and impactful dimensions and emphasizes the need for using AI technologies to enable digital access, enhance digital knowledge, address global challenges, and unlock economic value.

“It asserts Saudi global leadership in AI and focuses on AI’s inclusive, innovative, and transformative potential,” said Al-Qarni.

“The Declaration highlights the importance of leveraging AI technologies to expand digital access, enhance digital literacy, tackle global challenges, and unlock significant economic value worldwide.”

He added: “Nations that embrace AI will win, and those who let fear of AI get the best of them will lose.

“Globally, the next few years will offer as much opportunity as risk. Saudi Arabia has shown that it would be in the first camp. I expect more investment in human capital and technology. I also expect regulations to mature over the next few years, and I hope those regulations will more effectively support AI innovation and adoption.”

The past 12 months have seen a flurry of AI investment activity. The Kingdom recently launched a $100 billion AI initiative, named “Project Transcendence,” to position itself as a global tech hub.

The project, led by the Public Investment Fund in collaboration with Google, aims to support local tech startups, create jobs, and collaborate with technology firms globally.

From fashion to sports, AI is already being utilized in almost every sector imaginable. The boxing rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury in Riyadh on Dec. 21 featured an experimental fourth judge powered by AI, designed to help eliminate bias and human error in scoring.

Technology that supports good sportsmanship has also extended to the digital realm. FACEIT, a platform that uses Minerva, employs specialized AI technology to understand in-game actions and other non-text chat behaviors to improve multiplayer gaming experiences.

Saudi Arabia’s health-tech sector is also undergoing a major transformation driven by AI, promising significant economic and operational benefits. A McKinsey & Co. analysis forecasts that by 2030, AI could unlock $15 to $27 billion in economic value for the Kingdom’s medical sector.

The Saudi health sector has made significant strides thanks to AI, such as the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant performed on a 16-year-old patient suffering from end-stage heart failure at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh.

A medical team led by Dr. Feras Khaliel, head of cardiac surgery and director of the Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at KFSHRC, performed the operation after practicing the procedure virtually.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has also joined the global AI race by accelerating generative AI research through models aligned with the Kingdom’s Research Development and Innovation Authority.

Its Center of Excellence on Generative AI (GenAI Coe) intends to become the premier hub for pioneering generative AI technology to address the most pressing challenges faced by the Kingdom and the world.

The GenAI CoE also intends to focus on making a positive impact through GenAI training and upskilling programs for KAUST researchers, partners, and the general public. Through these training outreach initiatives, the CoE hopes to address the shortage of GenAI talent in Saudi Arabia.

As the Kingdom enters 2025, it is well-positioned to continue its meteoric rise as an AI leader.

Kitingan weighs in on Musa Aman’s TYT appointment, calls disputes part of Sabah’s uniqueness

27 Dec 2024

KOTA KINABALU, Dec 27 — Everyone will accept Tun Musa Aman’s appointment as Sabah’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri (TYT) in due time, opined Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

“It is normal that there are people who dispute his appointment. Not everyone can agree on it. But this is also one of our uniqueness. In due time, I think we will accept the appointment,” he told reporters at the PBS-Star Christmas celebrations at the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) compound Wednesday.

Jeffrey, who is also Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Sabah president and Tambunan assemblyman, was asked to comment on certain quarters still disputing Musa’s TYT appointment.

On whether the appointment would affect the rakyat’s view of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) since it was recommended by the Chief Minister, he declined to comment as he was not involved.

Meanwhile, regarding the Perhimpunan Aman Gempur Rasuah Sabah on December 31, he said to destroy corruption is indeed the aim of everyone, but he hoped that the organisers, Suara Mahasiswa UMS, are not misused for something that is not yet proven.

Jeffrey expressed his concerns on videos of the issue going viral on WhatsApp as such medium can be manipulated, claiming that the allegations making its rounds are untrue and aimed to sow distrust among the leaders and the people.

“If this group is misused to cause havoc before anything is proven, then I would advise not to get involved in this gathering.

“But corruption as a whole has been everyone’s goal, as such practices are not good for a country,” he said.

On another matter, Jeffrey, who is also State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries Minister, advised the public not to build homes nearby rivers considering the current rainy season.

He said houses built near rivers would not only affect their safety but may also be against the land laws in place, considering many reserves are established near riversides.

Jeffrey suggested to build them on higher ground and 40 chains or at least near a kilometre away from riversides instead.

“The issue of disasters is given attention to at all levels, where at the Federal level, there is a special allocation and at the State level, it was also included in the Budget.

“And in ensuring that the effects of global warming is lessened, we need to take care of our rivers and forests. Most importantly, is for everyone to take care of their safety,” he said. — The Borneo Post

Sokoto Airstrike: Nigerian Air Force Vows To Investigate Civilians’ Deaths

26 December 2024

By Justina Otio

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced that it will be launching a holistic investigation into airstrikes on two villages in Sokoto.

Recall that 10 civilians had lost their lives after a fighter jet mistakenly bombed two communities in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Wednesday morning.

Animals were also reportedly killed, with residents saying some of their houses were destroyed by the impact of the airstrikes.

The locals said the fighter jet was targeting Lakurawa terrorists in the areas, but in the process, dropped explosives on some innocent people.

A statement by the joint media coordinator for the operation, Abubakar Abdullahi, said the airstrikes targeted locations confirmed to be associated with the Lakurawa terrorist group

Reacting to the development via a statement, the NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, insisted that the airstrikes were carried out based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance.

He, however, assured that reports of civilian casualties would be thoroughly investigated.

“The airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources, along with confirmatory aerial surveillance. Nevertheless, reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated and we will update you appropriately,” he said.

French military base in Chad officially handed over to N'Djamena, after end of defence agreement

27 December 2024

Less than a month after N’Djamena cut its defence cooperation agreement with Paris, a French army base has been handed over to the Chadian army.

According to a local source, French troops left the base in Faya and headed to the capital, around 780km southwest. The troops will then travel back to France in the coming weeks.

A French military official stated that the handover was in line with the schedule organised with N'Djamena. Officials in Chad added that they would keep the public up to date regarding other bases to be handed over.

Before the defence agreement ended, France had around 1,000 troops in the Central African country. They gave intelligence and logistical help to the Chadian army.

Explaining the reasoning behind the end of the pact, Chad's Foreign Minister had argued that it was time for his nation to "assert its full sovereignty".

The handing over of the base comes days ahead of the country’s legislative, provincial and local elections.

Forces Vives Platform Of Guinea Stands Firm Against Junta's Extended Rule

27 December 2024

The Forces Vives platform of Guinea, which includes parts of the opposition and civil society, has announced that it will no longer recognize the authority of the military junta starting December 31, 2024.

This date was initially set as the end of the transition period promised by the military following the 2021 coup.

However, the authorities have since announced a delay, citing the need for a "refoundation of the state."

Abdoul Sacko, coordinator of the Forum des Forces Sociales de Guinée, stated that “there is no relevant, visible or perfectible approach to a return to constitutional order.” He criticized the current situation as one of widespread frustration and advocated for a civil transition.

He emphasized that while the transition authorities are nearing the end of their self-imposed mandate, there is a lack of accountability regarding the technical, administrative, and socio-political processes that led to the failure to uphold commitments.

The Forces Vives' rejection of the transition extension could signal a new phase in Guinea's political crisis.

The opposition and civil society may escalate their efforts to demand adherence to the original timeline and a swift return to constitutional order.

In light of what they perceive as a disregard for commitments made, the Forces Vives are now advocating for the establishment of a civilian transition, believing it to be the only viable option.

“Responsibility requires us to engage in efforts to inform and mobilize the populace towards a civil transition,” Abdoul Sacko asserted.

Regional challenges cost Egypt around $7 bln of Suez Canal revenues in 2024, El-Sisi says

December 26, 2024

CAIRO: Events in the Red Sea and regional challenges cost Egypt around $7 billion in revenues from the Suez Canal in 2024, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said on Thursday.

Egypt lost more than 60 percent of the canal’s revenues in 2024 compared with 2023, El-Sisi added in his statement, without going into details on the events.

Houthi fighters in Yemen have carried out nearly 100 attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea since November in solidarity with Palestinians in Israel’s more than year-old war in Gaza.

The attacks have forced shipping firms to divert vessels from the Suez Canal to longer routes around Africa, disrupting global trade by delaying deliveries and sending costs higher.

Panama's president calls Trump's Chinese canal claim 'nonsense'

27 Dec, 2024

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino has denied claims by US president-elect Donald Trump that there are Chinese soldiers stationed at the Panama Canal.

In recent days Trump has threatened to take the canal back into US control, accusing Panama of "ripping off" the US by charging high shipping rates.

In a message posted to his Truth Social account on Wednesday, Trump wrote: "Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal".

Mulino called the claim "nonsense" and said that there is "absolutely no Chinese interference".

"There is not a single Chinese soldier in the canal," he told reporters in Panama City.

Mulino also rejected the possibility of reducing tolls for US ships or ceding control of the canal, a major shipping channel which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

"The canal is Panamanian and belongs to Panamanians. There's no possibility of opening any kind of conversation around this reality," he said.

After breaking ties with Taiwan, Panama established diplomatic ties with China in 2017, and Mulino said relations between the two countries were "respectful, well-managed … in terms of what is in the interest of both countries."

His comments came a day after Trump said he would nominate a Florida lawmaker to be his ambassador to Panama.

Kevin Marino Cabrera, a Republican commissioner in Miami-Dade County, worked for Trump's 2020 campaign and this year was Florida's representative to the Republican National Committee.

Announcing his pick in a Christmas Day post on his Truth Social network, Trump said Cabrera "will do a fantastic job representing our Nation's interests in Panama!".

The president-elect also repeated claims that Panama is "ripping us off".

On Sunday, Trump told a crowd of conservative activists: "The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, highly unfair."

If shipping rates are not lowered, Trump said, "we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, quickly and without question".

Trump has also said he did not want the Panama Canal "falling into the wrong hands" and specifically cited China.

China is the second-largest user of the Panama Canal after the US, according to data, and also has major investments in the central American country.

On Christmas Day, Trump fired off dozens of messages defending his policies and nominations, and repeated suggestions that the US annex Greenland and Canada.

It is unclear how serious Trump is about the territorial moves, or how they would be accomplished.

Up to 14,000 ships travel through the 51-mile (82km) canal each year, including container ships carrying cars, natural gas and other goods, and military vessels.

The canal was built in the early 1900s. The US maintained control over the canal zone until 1977, when treaties gradually ceded the land back to Panama. After a period of joint control, Panama took sole control in 1999.

Canal transit costs have increased over the past year due to a historic drought, according to shipping industry website Lloyd's List.

A Hong Kong-based company, CK Hutchison Holdings, manages two ports at the canal's entrances.

US faces deadly surf conditions and tornadoes during holidays

27 Dec, 2024

Kayla Epstein

Winter winds in the US have delivered deadly surf conditions to western states and reports of tornadoes to Texas, as parts of the US faced severe weather over the holidays.

With waves as high as 30ft (9.1m) in some areas of California, the US National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for the US West Coast through Sunday and cautioned inexperienced surfers and swimmers to stay out of the water.

The weather is blamed for multiple injuries and at least one death after a man was found under debris on the coast. The public was told to be vigilant and to "never turn your back on the ocean".

Meanwhile, storms across parts of Texas prompted tornado sightings and flight delays on Thursday.

On the West Coast, the NWS warned of possibly "life threatening conditions" for swimmers as storms continued to rock the California coast.

"Stay off jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure," the National Weather Service warned in a release on Thursday.

California has faced days of dangerous surf conditions.

A wharf in Santa Cruz, California, collapsed after it was struck by strong waves earlier this week.

In a separate incident, the Marina Police Department responded to reports that an adult man had been swept out to sea on Monday. Rescue officials were forced to call off an air and sea search due to dangerous conditions.

Farther up the Pacific Coast, the US states of Washington and Oregon are also under heavy surf advisories until Friday afternoon.

Down in Texas, the winter winds brought reports of tornadoes.

Jimmy George, the emergency management coordinator for El Campo, Texas, told the BBC that a tornado touched down near his small town of 12,000 people that sits about an hour outside of Houston.

Mr George saw the tornado at a distance while on a highway, he said, and locals had reported additional sightings of the same weather event.

There were no injuries reported but three barns in the area were damaged, said Russell McDougall, an emergency official in Wharton County, Texas.

Local media reported a second tornado in the area, but the BBC was not able to independently verify this.

The National Weather Service had warned residents in the Houston area and parts of southeast Texas of the potential for thunderstorms and tornadoes. An NWS spokesperson could not immediately verify the El Campo tornado, as such reports can take several days to officially confirm.

More than 100 flights were delayed at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport due to weather, the AP reported.

The storm system was expected to pass by Thursday night.

The US East Coast, meanwhile, continued to enjoy a snow-dusted Christmas.

New York City experienced its first so-called "white Christmas" - when more than an inch of powder is recorded on the ground - since 2009.

While snow caused minor travel woes for some on the roadways, it was not the main trouble for Morris County, New Jersey - a suburban area outside near Manhattan.

Drivers there faced a large sinkhole that opened up next to the I-80 highway in Morris County, which prompted traffic delays.

A historic collaboration: Scientists and citizens join forces to map the Northern Lights in North America

26/12/2024

During auroras, there are not only the familiar visible light shows: when they appear, Earth's ionosphere is experiencing an increase in ionisation and total electron content (TEC) due to the precipitation of energetic electrons and ions in the ionosphere.

The extreme auroral event that occurred earlier this year (10-11 May, 2024) was due to geomagnetic “superstorm” Gannon, named in honour of researcher Jennifer Gannon, who sadly passed away on 2 May. During Storm Gannon, both researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory and citizen scientists from across the United States observed the effects of this event on Earth's ionosphere.

The importance of citizen participation in science

Citizen science or community science involves members of the general public volunteering their time to contribute, often at a significant level, to scientific investigations, including observations, data collection, technology development, and interpretation of results and analyses. Professional scientists are not the only people who conduct research.

The collaborative work of citizen scientists not only supports stronger scientific results, but also improves the transparency of scientific work on issues of importance to the wider population and increases engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) among many groups of people who are not professional scientists in these fields.

Data combination between professional scientists and citizen scientists

The Haystack Observatory collected data for this study from a dense network of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System, including systems such as GPS) receivers across the United States that monitor changes in ionospheric TEC variations on a time scale less than a minute.

In this study, John Foster and colleagues mapped the effects of auroras during Storm Gannon in terms of changes in TEC and worked with citizen scientists to confirm the event's expansion with photographic and video observations. Both the TEC observations and the procedural incorporation of synchronous images from citizen scientists were innovative; This is the first use of precipitation-produced ionospheric TEC to map the occurrence and evolution of a strong continental-scale auroral display.

Haystack scientists also linked their work to citizen observations posted on social media to support TEC measurements made through the GNSS receiver network. These colour images and the very high TEC levels led to the conclusion that the intense red aurora was co-located with the leading edge of the rising TEC levels toward the equator and west, indicating that the rising TEC was created by a intense precipitation of low-energy electrons following the geomagnetic superstorm.

This storm was exceptionally strong, with rare auroral activity at mid-latitudes. Processes in the magnetosphere during the storm were the immediate cause of the auroral and ionospheric disturbances. These in turn were driven by the preceding solar coronal mass ejection and the interaction of the highly disturbed solar wind with the Earth's outer magnetosphere.

The ionospheric observations reported in the paper cited below are part of this global system of interactions, and their characteristics can be used to better understand our coupled atmospheric system.
