Elected Muslim MPs, Belonging To Different Political Parties, Former MPs Discuss How To Overcome The Unprecedented Crisis Community Faces

By Syed Khalique Ahmed

June 29, 2024

Former MP Mohammed Adeeb addresses the audience at Jawahar Bhawan, New Delhi, on June 29, 2024.

--------------

NEW DELHI—IT was for the first time in the history of Independent India that elected Muslim Members of Parliament belonging to different political parties as also former MPs and union ministers shared a common platform under the banner of “Indian Muslims for Civil Rights” at the Jawahar Bhawan, a little distance away from Indian Parliament, where they discussed the crisis faced by the community and how to overcome it.

Muslims in the last 75 years of Independent India had never faced such a plight, not even in 1947 when India got partitioned into India and Pakistan for which Muslims were mostly held responsible.  There were also large scale communal riots or anti-Muslim pogrom in Punjab and Bengal following Partition but it ended with that because of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who strongly believed in communal harmony and multi-culturalism. It was because of the influence of Mahatma Gandhi and India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru who assured equal treatment to all citizens irrespective of their religious ideology that a vast number of Muslims chose India as their country though they had the choice to shift to Pakistan. It was basically Gandhi’s ideology of mutual co-existence of various religious communities that prompted Hindu hardliner Nathu Ram Godse to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi.

But the situation has taken a totally U-turn in the last 10 years since RSS-trained Narendra Modi took over as Prime Minister. After 1947, communal riots took place over some particular incident but subsided later on with the intervention of the government, police and local leaders. But the basis of anti-Muslim violence now is Hindutva ideology that does not want to treat Muslims equally with other citizens. And hence, the Muslims are specially targeted by Hindu radicals in each and every state, particularly in BJP-run states. Muslim youths faced mob lynching and murder just because of their Muslim identity. Their houses were bulldozed in many states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana in violation of existing laws. Muslim youths in large numbers were sent to jail on slightest of offences.

Muslims expected that their lot would change if BJP-led NDA government headed by PM Modi was replaced with opposition INDIA alliance in the just concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Though BJP could not win adequate number of seats to form government on its own strength but formed the government with the support of its NDA allies while opposition became stronger by increasing its seats in Parliament. Practically, BJP and Modi became weaker because the voters did not give BJP absolute majority and the saffron party is dependent on its allies to run the government. This was a factor for Muslims to be happy that NDA allies like Telugu Desam Party’(TDP) Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar, who are considered to have belief in secular principles, would put a break in the way of BJP targeting Muslims. Another reason for Muslims to be happy was that opposition came out stronger by bagging more seats than in the previous elections in 2014 and 2019 with the strategic support of Muslim electorates and now they would raise their voice in case of atrocities on Muslims.

Muslims voted for Congress and its INDIA alliance who had committed to protect the Constitution in their election manifestoes. Muslims displayed extreme degree of patience even when provoked by no less than a leader like PM himself who called names to Muslims since April 19 when he launched his party’s election rallies. He called Muslims “ghuspaithias’ (infiltrators), meaning Muslims are not natives to India but intruders from other Muslim countries. This hate campaign against Muslims was continued throughout the election campaign with a view to polarizing the Hindu voters in favour of BJP. Had Muslims reacted to PM’s remarks, it would have certainly polarised the Hindu voters to a large extent. But Muslim political leaders showed high degree of political maturity and kept silent while silently mobilizing the Muslim masses to vote in favour of secular parties and candidates who were part of Congress-led INDIA alliance. Fearing polarization, secular political parties like Congress and Samajwadi Party fielded only a few Muslims as a part of political strategy to win as many seats as possible. Even top Muslim leaders like former Union Minister Salman Khurshid of the Congress party was dropped from contesting elections to prevent polarization. Though this looked like humiliation to the biggest minority community accounting for more than 20 percent of India’s population, Muslims condoned it because of a larger common objective of defeating the BJP’s “dictatorship” and lofty aim of restoring democracy and constitutionalism. The combined electoral strategy of the Muslim community and the Opposition INDIA alliance yielded good results, yet short of acquiring power to replace BJP-led NDA at the Centre.

Muslims expected that a stronger Opposition would raise its voice against oppression of Muslims under the BJP rule. But what followed Modi taking oath as PM for the third time with the support of TDP and JD(U) shattered the dream of Muslims. Soon after Modi becoming PM, three Muslim youths were lynched – one at Aligarh which is just 70 km from Indian Parliament – and an entire Muslim colony was bulldozed in Lucknow – apart from the demolition of a mosque in Bawana area in India’s capital. Some Muslim houses were also bulldozed in Madhya Pradesh on the pretext that they had kept cows at their homes for their slaughter during the Bakrid festival. But no one, not even the Opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, spoke about the oppression of Muslims, fearing perhaps the Hindu backlash despite knowing full well that Hindus, who are mostly secular, rejected the BJP’s politics of divide and hate in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Opposition should have stood with Muslims at this juncture when they are being victimized at the hands of the BJP state governments and the ruling party because what the government did in UP and MP against Muslims is total unconstitutional but INDIA alliance parties and their leaders maintained stoic silence. Their complete silence shows as if nothing is happening with regard to Muslims.

The indifference of Opposition leaders with regard to oppression against Muslims motivated Muslims of all political ideologies to assemble under a common banner floated by Mohammed Adeeb, a former MP and a past president of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to deliberate about what to do in such a situation. He expressed surprise that even Opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav avoid using the word Muslim in their statements and speeches, and address them as minorities, thus suppressing identity of Muslims in the country.

But what is heartening is that all the Muslim leaders, not even religious leaders who were so far habitual to giving highly emotional and provocative speeches, showed balance and maturity. All of them focused on unity of Muslims and advised the community to work with secular Hindus to fight atrocities on Muslims. They emphasized that the Hindu majority was not against Muslims and the biggest proof of it is the Hindus’ rejection of the BJP in the just concluded Parliamentary elections despite highly provocative language used by PM against Muslims.

According to many participants, the result of the 2024 General Elections gives hope to the Muslims that their future in India is not in dark but bright. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) president Syed Sadatullah Husaini, in particular, highlighted this aspect. He asked Muslims not to lose hope from the people of the country who have outrightly rejected politics of hate and division as promoted by none other PM Modi himself. He said that people rejected BJP candidates in all Parliamentary constituencies where Modi delivered hate speeches. This indicates that the people of the country will not accept the poison of hate doled out by anyone, even the PM of the country. He advised Muslims to be ready for a long struggle.

"There Is Absolutely No Place For Hinduphobia In Britain", Says Sir Keir Starmer, Labour Leader

Jun 30, 2024

LONDON: Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who is widely expected to become the next British prime minister, visited the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Kingsbury on Friday where he said "there is absolutely no place for Hinduphobia in Britain" and that Labour would "build a new strategic partnership with India".

He began his speech with "Jai Swaminarayan" and praised British Hindus for not having forgotten their roots, for their "rich Hindu heritage and deep commitment to Britain's future".

"If we're elected next week we will strive to govern in the spirit of seva to serve you and a world in need," he said. "Strengthened by Hindu values, you're not only contributing massively to our economy, you're bringing innovation and expertise that keeps us competitive on the global market."

He said Labour had a record number of Hindu candidates in the general election. If selected, they will "stand - with the entire Labour party - firmly behind the Hindu community, representing your concerns, listening to your voice, working with you, on issues at home as well as on the global stage," he said.

Starmer was received by an Indian pipe band in Scottish regalia. He performed "anjali mudra" and then inside the mandir he performed puja which included "abhisheka", interacted with local schoolchildren and was given "prasad".

Dr Neeraj Patil, chairman of Hindus for Labour, said: "He is going to address anti-Hindu hatred, which is most welcome. He is sending a strong positive signal to 1.7 million British Hindus that the prospective Labour govt will include Hindus in the growth and prosperity of this country."

CAIR-NY Says Israeli Consul General’s False Claim of ‘Muslim Occupation’ of New York will Prompt More Hate Crimes

Ibrahim Hooper

June 29, 2024

Muslim civil rights group says ‘hate-filled remarks should be repudiated by all political and religious leaders’

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today said a false claim by the far-right Israeli government’s new consul general that New York is under threat of “Muslim occupation” will likely lead to more hate crimes targeting ordinary Muslims and Arab-Americans.

In an interview with the New York Post, Ofir Akunis, Israeli Consul General in New York, said: “You know what happening in London these days, you know what’s happening in Paris these days and in Malmo, a major city in Sweden? They are under radical Muslim occupation. There are no-go zones and I don’t want to happen here in New York or in other places here in the United States…I’m calling on New Yorkers: wake up before it will be too late!”

“This false ‘wake up’ call is in reality a call to hatred and violence targeting New York Muslims and Arabs, and those perceived to be Muslim and Arab-American,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “These false and hate-filled remarks should be repudiated by all political and religious leaders.”

[NOTE: According Georgetown University’s Bridge Initiative: “The ‘no-go zone’ is an anti-Muslim conspiracy theory claiming there are areas in Europe and the U.S. with dense Muslim populations that are governed by Sharia law and where police and non-residents are barred from entry. Although it has been debunked by European police officials and news organizations, the idea of the ‘no-go zone’ continues to circulate and is often used to justify anti-immigration and anti-Muslim policies and rhetoric.”]

Earlier this month, CAIR-NY welcomed the arrest of a man who allegedly harassed a Muslim teenager and ripped off her Islamic head scarf, or hijab, and welcomed a hate crime charge brought against a suspect who allegedly attacked a Muslim woman on a subway train platform in April.

Earlier this year, CAIR’s national office released its 2024 civil rights report, which revealed the highest number of complaints it has ever received in its 30-year history. Titled “Fatal: The Resurgence of Anti-Muslim Hate,” the report documented 8,061 complaints. Nearly half of all complaints received in 2023 were reported in the final three months of the year.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

Iraq: Years After IS' Defeat, UNESCO Finds 5 Bombs Hidden In Al-Nouri Mosque's Walls In Mosul

29 June 2024

-------------

The United Nations cultural agency has discovered five bombs hidden within the walls of the historic al-Nouri Mosque in northern Iraq's Mosul, which is a remnant of the rule of Islamic State militant group over the area.

Famous for its 12the century leaning minaret, the mosque was destroyed by IS in 2017 and since 2020, has been a key focus for UNESCO's restoration efforts since.

The UN agency said that it found five large-scale explosive devices, designed for severe destruction, inside the southern wall of the Prayer Hall on Tuesday.

“These explosive devices were concealed within a specially rebuilt section of the wall,” a statement, adding that "Iraqi authorities were promptly notified, secured the area, and the situation is now fully under control."

Reportedly it said that one of the bombs had been defused and removed, while the remaining four are interconnected and will be disposed of in the coming day safely.

Iraqi authorities requested UNESCO to pause all its restoration works at the al-Nouri Mosque, asking them to entirely evacuate the premises until all the explosives are disarmed.

A decade ago, on June 29, 2014, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had declared an Islamic caliphate from the mosque, leading to its destruction when extremists bombed it during the battle for Mosul's liberation in 2017.

These newly discovered bombs are a proof of the challenges that authorities face in clearing Mosul of any explosives and revive the destroyed urban areas of the city.

United Nations' added support to International efforts have been focusing on clearing the mine and helping the city's revival. However, despite efforts, majority of Mosul's old city remains in ruins.

UNESCO's statement said that the agency aims to complete the full restruction of al-Nouri Mosque by December, "finally erasing the stigma of the Daesh occupation," the Arabic acronym for the IS' name.

A decade after IS declared its caliphate in large parts of Iraq and Syria, the extremists no longer control any land and has lost many of its key leaders.

However, the group continues to recruit members and claim responsibility for devastating attacks across the world, including the lethal operations in Iran and Russia earlier this year.

Reportedly, IS militant group's sleeper cells also carry out attacks against government forces in both Syria and Iraq as well as US-backed Syrian fighters, at a time when Iraq's government is negotiating with Washington over a possible withdrawal of US troops.

Mosque demolition resisted: 5 cops injured in clash with locals in Jammu’s Kathua district

Muzaffar Raina

30.06.24

Tension flared up in Jammu’s Kathua district after the authorities tried to demolish a mosque, allegedly built on government land, leading to clashes in which around half a dozen policemen were injured.

The clashes broke out as the 52-day-long annual Amarnath yatra started in the Valley with the first batch of pilgrims leaving the twin base camps — Baltal in Sonamarg and Nunwan in Pahalgam — for their journey to the cave.

Locals in Nagri of Kathua district said a group of officers, assisted by a strong contingent of security forces, arrived early on Saturday at Paddri to demolish a mosque.

“They had brought bulldozers to demolish the mosque. But locals came out in large numbers to protest the move. The construction of the mosque had started around a decade ago but it was built in piecemeal. Nobody objected to it all these years,” Lal Hussain, a member of the tribal Gujjar community, said.

How India’s Newly Empowered Opposition Can Stand Up for Rohingya

BY RASHEED AHMED

JUNE 29, 2024

In July 2023, Indian authorities led a Rohingya refugee couple to burial grounds in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. Their 40-day-old daughter had just died in the refugee detention center where the couple was also held, following refugee-led protests in which police deployed teargas against detainees. As their daughter was buried, they watched on with handcuffed wrists, tethered to police escorts.

Video of the incident caused a stir in India, but it was just one tragedy in the broader campaign of intense persecution Rohingya refugees have faced from the Hindu nationalist government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Muslim Rohingya came to India fleeing genocide by the military in neighboring Myanmar, but now has to contend with death threats, police brutality, arbitrary arrest, deportation, and dehumanizing hate speech from leading figures within Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

The hatred of the Rohingya is pervasive in India. Despite them comprising only around 0.02% of the country’s 200 million Muslims, 6% of all Indian anti-Muslim social media posts and 5% of surveyed anti-Muslim in-person hate speeches were specifically targeted at Rohingya in 2023, according to the Washington, D.C.-based India Hate Lab research group.

France votes in high-stakes election as far-right eyes historic victory

Jun 30, 2024

French electors worldwide are participating in the initial round of an extraordinary parliamentary election that could potentially place France's government under the control of far-right forces for the first time since the Nazi era.

The outcome of this two-round election, concluding on July 7, may have significant implications for European financial markets, Western support for Ukraine, and the management of France's nuclear arsenal and global military force.

Many French voters are dissatisfied with inflation, economic concerns, and President Emmanuel Macron's leadership, which they perceive as arrogant and disconnected from their daily lives. Marine Le Pen's anti-immigration National Rally party has capitalised on and fueled this discontent, particularly through online platforms like TikTok, and has dominated all preelection opinion polls. Additionally, a new left-wing coalition, the New Popular Front, is challenging Macron's pro-business stance and his centrist alliance, Together for the Republic.

Macron called for this early election after his party suffered a significant defeat in the European Parliament election earlier in June at the hands of the National Rally, which has historical ties to racism and antisemitism and maintains a hostile stance towards France's Muslim community.

Islamic State killed 4,100 in Syria since 2019 defeat: monitor

29 June, 2024

Islamic State fighters have killed nearly 4,100 people in Syria since 2019 when the jihadists lost their last stronghold in the country, a war monitor said Saturday.

IS overran large swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2014, proclaiming a so-called caliphate and launching a reign of terror in June of that year.

In March 2019, the jihadist group lost its last scraps of Syrian territory in a Kurdish-led military campaign backed by a US-led coalition, but remnants continue to launch deadly attacks from desert hideouts.

IS fighters "have killed about 4,100 people in more than 2,550 operations in areas controlled by the regime or" the semi-autonomous Kurdish administration since 2019, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a report.

Most of the victims are soldiers, regime loyalists and Kurdish-led fighters, but the toll also incudes 627 civilians, the Britain-based Observatory said.

Canada’s clownish anti-Muslim activists are still ginning up hate to earn a buck. This is the one good reason why can’t ignore their antics

June 29, 2024

By Steven Zhou Contributor

Before killing four members of the same Muslim family in London, Ont. three years ago, the man behind the attack — a convicted Islamophobic terrorist — wrote a manifesto calling for mass violence against non-white people.

After killing six Muslim worshippers inside a Quebec City mosque in 2017, the mass shooter behind that attack told police he wanted to protect his family from “Islamic terrorists.”

Those two men were consuming and consumed by content claiming Muslims pose a special threat to Canada and the West. It’s an old conspiracy theory that goes by many names — the Counter Jihad, the Great Replacement —with a diverse array of boosters, from neo-Nazi trolls to the former President of the United States.

Bad ideas with that type of exposure can take on lives of their own. They can travel from the realm of abstract thought into the arena of tangible action. Canadians should be especially acquainted with that process. Muslims in Canada certainly are. We watched ten members of our community murdered, in just five years, by killers who openly trafficked in exactly that kind of hate.

But we’ve also watched people use those narratives to make money. They’ve ginned up fears with headlines like, “White genocide in Canada?” and “Dear Liberals: Islamophobia is justified” on their platforms. They continue to serve what they must see as a market for this type of dangerous commentary in Canada.

That’s what I thought when I saw the “jumbotron van” bearing Islamophobic messages making its way through Toronto recently. The displays were stark: “Is this Lebanon? Is this Yemen? Is this Syria? Is this Iraq?” followed by pictures of Muslims praying and protesting in Nathan Phillips Square, along with images of people holding the Palestinian flag. Then appear the words: “No. This is Canada. Wake up Canada. You are under siege.”

It didn’t take long for reporters and investigators to verify who owns the vehicle. I was not surprised by the name that emerged. I have seen too many similar actions and incidents by the same player over the past decade. Sadly, I’ve grown rather desensitized. I’ve almost convinced myself this is normal.

Ogbomosho: Soun, Chief Imam feud deepens as court restrains monarch

June 30, 2024

The feud between the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye and the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Sheik Teliat Yunus Ayilara appears not abating even after an Oyo State High Court restrained the monarch from removing the Chief Imam.

Justice K.B. Olawoyin of an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ogbomoso had yesterday barred the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye and kingmakers in Ogbomoso land, led by Chief Sobalaje Otolorin from removing the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Sheik Teliat Yunus Ayilara.

The Nation learnt that Muslims in the town under the auspices of ‘Registered Trustees of Ogbomoso Muslim Youths Forum,’ had dragged the traditional ruler and the kingmakers who are members of Soun-In-Council to court over the planned removal of the cleric.

The case with the suit number HOG/31/2024, filed at Oyo State High Court Ogbomoso Division, has Registered Trustees of Ogbomoso Muslim Youths Forum as plaintiffs, while the Soun and the Soun-In-Council are the defendants.

The court, presided over by Justice Olawoyin, on Wednesday 26th June, 2024, barred the traditional ruler and the Soun-In-Council from removing the Chief Imam.

It barred the “defendants/respondents whether by themselves, their agents, privies, officers under their control, or any persons acting on the instruction of the defendants/respondents from suspending or removing the holder of the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland (in the person of Alhaji Yunus Olusina Ayilara) or in anyway disturbing or tampering with the office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso land pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

UNESCO-inscribed oral tradition of Alheda’a reflects enduring bond between Arabs and camels

ARAB NEWS

June 29, 2024

RIYADH: Alheda’a, a folk art passed down through generations across Arabian societies, embodies the deep connection between camels and locals.

Camel herders use Alheda’a — a combination of sounds, gestures, and sometimes musical instruments — to communicate with their camels. These rhythmic expressions, inspired by poetry, form a unique vocabulary that camels seem to understand and obey.

According to a report by the Saudi Press Agency published on June 29, herders use Alheda’a to guide their camels through the desert, find pastures for grazing, and prepare them for watering, milking, and riding. It also allows them to quickly gather the herd together in case of sandstorms.

Historical accounts credit Mudar bin Nizar with having invented Alheda’a. After a fall from his camel, he kept crying “Waidah! Waidah!” (Oh, my hand!). The camels began moving, thus beginning the tradition of using vocal cues to guide camels.

Opposition In Punjab Holds ‘Parallel Session’Pledging Not To Accept “Fake Form-47” CM Maryam Nawaz

Zulqernain Tahir

June 30, 2024

LAHORE: Amid escalating tensions with the treasury, the opposition in the Punjab Assembly held its own session on Saturday, pledging not to accept “fake Form-47” Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, even if the speaker suspended all its lawmakers.

Opposition lawmakers from the PTI (Sunni Ittehad Council) and ruling PML-N lawmakers had been at loggerheads after 11 opposition members were suspended for 15 sittings due to “rowdyism” during Maryam Nawaz’s speech on Friday.

The government further escalated the situation by stripping opposition leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar of his perks and privileges and closing his chamber in the assembly.

A heavy contingent of police and a prisoner van were stationed outside the Punjab Assembly as the session began on Saturday, with orders to prevent the 11 suspended lawmakers from entering.

President Zardari gives assent to tax-laden finance bill

Nadir Guramani

June 30, 2024

President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday gave assent to the government’s tax-heavy Finance Bill 2024 for the new fiscal year.

The government had presented the budget two weeks ago, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties, especially the PTI, as well as coalition ally PPP.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb had moved the finance bill in parliament, which had been opened to seek amendments and debate by the ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and its opposition.

Opposition parties, mainly parliamentarians backed by currently incarcerated former premier Imran Khan, had rejected the budget, saying it would be highly inflationary.

Earlier this week, the PPP — which had initially boycotted the debate over the budget — decided that it would vote for the finance bill despite certain reservations.

On Friday, the National Assembly passed the budget with some amendments. The motion was preceded by fiery speeches from the opposition, who described the budget as unrealistic, anti-people, anti-industry, and anti-agriculture.

ECP asked to justify PTI’s exclusion from polls

Nasir Iqbal

June 30, 2024

ISLAMABAD: Justice Athar Minallah has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to satisfy the Supreme Court that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) was excluded from the electoral process legitimately, thereby forfeiting its claim to reserved seats.

As a member of the full-court bench of the Supreme Court hearing the Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) appeal against the denial of reserved seats for women and minorities, Justice Minallah directed the ECP to satisfy the court that a level playing field was provided to all political parties, including PTI, before, during, and after the February 8 general elections.

In a four-page note, Justice Minallah observed that petitions pending before the SC raising questions about the integrity of the Feb 8 polls should be heard alongside the SIC petitions. He directed the ECP to place on record the nature of complaints received prior to, during, and after the general elections and satisfy the apex court that each political party was treated in accordance with the Constitution’s command, providing a level playing field to all.

Justice Minallah said the question of reserved seats could not be decided in isolation or based on technicalities and pleadings. According to him, the larger issue involves the fundamental democratic and constitutional right of the real stakeholders — the voters. As they are not before the bench and as the highest court vested with jurisdictions under articles 184(3) and 187 of the Constitution, the approach ought to be inquisitorial. He said the Supreme Court was the custodian of the rights of people and the right to vote was one of the most important fundamental rights.

All other rights become illusory and the Constitution is gravely violated when voters are disenfranchised, if the ECP fails in its duty to conduct the elections in accordance with the mandate of the Constitution, according to him.

SC judge Athar Minallah denies role in case against Vawda, Kamal

Nasir Iqbal

June 30, 2024

ISLAMABAD: In a letter sent to the Supreme Court registrar to dispel the impression that contempt proceedings against Senator Faisal Vawda and MNA Mustafa Kamal were initiated on his complaint, Justice Athar Minallah stated unequivocally that neither any complaint was filed by him nor was he in any manner consulted in this regard.

“My view regarding contempt proceedings is manifest from the jurisprudence laid down while I was serving in the High Court,” Justice Minallah said in the letter. He added that he had confronted the challenges of malicious campaigns, intrusions in his privacy, fake allegations, and imputation of motives on account of his verdicts since 2017.

He said that as a judge he had realised that such vilification campaigns were associated with the nature of performing their constitutional duty in a polarised society having a fragile rule of law.

“It affirmed and strengthened my allegiance and commitment to every word of the oath of my office. Fake, false, and misguided propaganda and vilification campaigns are short-lived because truth ultimately prevails,” he said.

According to him, as a judge, he has never responded to nor has he been influenced by such vilification campaigns, regardless of their harshness or falsity. The letter said that the judicial branch of the state had a pivotal role in society.

PTI wants election symbol review plea to be heard by full court

June 30, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The PTI on Saturday requested the Supreme Court to fix its review petition challenging the decision to deny the party its ‘bat’ symbol for general elections.

The fresh application filed by PTI said the review petition should be heard by a full court “in the interest of justice and completeness”.

The scope and ambit of the judgement under review is already being debated before a full bench in the reserved seats case, the application said while referring to reserved seats case which is being heard by all judges of the Supreme Court.

The question has arisen whether taking away the “bat” symbol from PTI resulted in the non-allocation of reserved seats to them or whether the ECP wrongly interpreted SC’s order.

PTI wants IHC CJ to resign after Tyrian White case order

Ikram Junaidi

June 30, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The PTI has called for the resignation of Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamir Farooq after his fellow judges questioned his conduct in the Tyrian White case against former prime minister Imran Khan.

A day after the decision of a three-judge IHC bench was published, the PTI said CJ Farooq had no moral ground to continue holding his office.

Earlier in May, the three-judge bench dismissed a petition seeking the disqualification of Mr Khan for concealing his alleged daughter, Tyrian White.

In their detailed order, the judges criticised CJ Farooq for dissolving a previous three-judge bench, of which he was also a part, after two members disagreed with his opinion that the petition against Mr Khan was maintainable.

Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Arbab Mohammad Tahir wanted the petitions to be dismissed, but the CJ, instead of announcing the majority (2-1) judgement, dissolved the bench in May 2023.

SHC declares recruitment in over 140 govt depts null and void

Ishaq Tanoli

June 30, 2024

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Saturday scrapped the entire recruitment process, initiated last year by the then Pakistan Peoples Party government, in over 140 departments, attached organisations and autonomous bodies of the Sindh government and declared it as null and void.

The SHC directed the provincial government to ensure that the jobs were to be filled according to applicable urban and rural quota and as per seats vacant as well as in line with the Sindh Permanent Residence Certificates Rules.

A single-judge bench headed by Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput passed these directives while deciding a lawsuit filed by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) in August last year against the then PPP government’s plan to fill thousands of vacancies without observing formalities.

The bench in its order said that the entire recruitment process of the defendants commenced through advertisements attached with this suit and any other jobs acquired in view of such advertisement process or otherwise were to be scrapped and declared as null, void and of no legal effect.

That in future no recruitment is to take place on the basis of any walk-in-interview by the government of Sindh/defendants, it added.

“That the Government of Sindh/defendants shall ensure that jobs are to be filled according to applicable Urban vis-à-vis Rural quota in the ratio of 40:60 as per SOI(S&GAD) 23/1/71/75-77 dated 16.1.1971 in respect of appointments under Rule 14 of the Sindh Civil Servants (Appointment, Promotion and Transfer) Rules, 1974 (the Rules-1974), wherever it is applicable,” the court order said.

The posts of BS-5 to 15 and BS-1 to 4 shall be filled by the government of Sindh/defendants under Rules 15 (on regional/district basis) and 16 (on local basis) of the Rules-1974 respectively, it further ruled.

“That all the vacancies shall be filled by the Government of Sindh/defendants as per seats vacant and in accordance with Sindh Permanent Residence Certificates Rules, 1971, wherever it is applicable, and it shall also be ensured that no vacancy above the sanctioned strength was filled,” it added.

Iran Warns Israel Of "Obliterating" War If Lebanon Attacked

June 29, 2024

Tehran, Iran: Iran on Saturday warned that "all Resistance Fronts", a grouping of Iran and its regional allies, would confront Israel if it attacks Lebanon.

The comment from Iran's mission to New York comes with fears of a wider regional war involving Israel and Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. The two sides have engaged in near-daily exchanges of fire since the war in Gaza began.

Such exchanges have escalated this month, alongside bellicose rhetoric from both sides. Israel's military said plans for a Lebanon offensive had been "approved and validated", prompting Hezbollah to respond that none of Israel would be spared in a full-blown conflict.

In a post on social media platform X, the Iranian mission said it "deems as psychological warfare the Zionist regime's propaganda about intending to attack Lebanon".

OIC Condemns Israeli Approval Legitimatizing Settlements

29/June/2024

JEDDAH June 29. 2024 (Saba) - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday strongly deplored the Zionist government's approval to the legitimacy of five settlement colonies in the West Bank, plans to build thousands of new settlement units and impose taxes on churches and their properties in the occupied city of Quds, and persistent misappropriation of Palestinian tax funds, dubbing the moves as part of "policies based on ethnic cleansing, forced displacement and genocide against the Palestinian people."

All the measures and decisions made by the Zionist entity to impose its colonialist system in the occupied land of Palestine are invalid under the international law and UNSC relevant resolutions, OIC said in a statement.

The OIC warned against the settlers' persistent terrorism increasingly seen by the West Bank, and called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and press for an end to the occupier's genocide in Gaza Strip and illegal measures across the Palestinian occupied lands.

Jihad and five major wars in Israel's history

JUNE 30, 2024

Israel's history has been marked by significant conflicts since its establishment as a modern state in 1948 including: the War of Independence (1947-1949), the Six-Day War (1967), the Yom Kippur War (1973), the Lebanon War (2006), and the ongoing Gaza War (2023-2024). By analyzing these conflicts and incorporating insights from Professor Kedar, an Israeli scholar of Arab culture, we can identify common threads, root causes, and the broader context within Islamic thought and practice.

Israel's War of Independence (1947-1949) began after the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab states in November 1947. This decision was accepted by Jewish leaders but rejected by Arab leaders. The war can be divided into two phases: intercommunal fighting between Jewish and Arab communities within Palestine, followed by an invasion by neighboring Arab states after Israel's declaration of independence on May 14, 1948. The conflict resulted in around 6,000 Israeli and 10,000 Arab deaths, as well as the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs, creating a refugee crisis that continues to impact the region today.

The Six-Day War (June 1967) dramatically altered the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Tensions had been building for years, with Arab states refusing to recognize Israel's right to exist and engaging in economic warfare through blockades. The immediate trigger for the war was Egypt's closure of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping in May 1967, along with the mobilization of Arab forces along Israel's borders. Feeling existentially threatened, Israel launched a preemptive strike on June 5, 1967, destroying most of the Egyptian air force on the ground within hours. Over the next six days, Israel fought against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, ultimately capturing the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights. This conflict led to long-term complications regarding the occupation of territories and the status of Palestinians under Israeli control.

The Yom Kippur War (October 1973) began with a surprise attack by Egypt and Syria on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. The Arab states sought to reclaim territories lost in the Six-Day War and restore Arab pride. Initially, Arab forces made significant gains, crossing the Suez Canal and pushing into the Sinai Peninsula, while Syrian forces advanced into the Golan Heights. The surprise attack caught Israel off guard, and for the first few days, the situation looked dire for the Israeli forces. However, after mobilizing its reserves and receiving critical military aid from the United States, Israel managed to turn the tide. By the war's end on October 25, Israeli forces had pushed back both the Egyptian and Syrian armies, even advancing further into Syrian territory. The war ended with a UN-brokered ceasefire. While it was a military victory for Israel, the initial Arab successes shattered the myth of Israeli invincibility and paved the way for future peace negotiations, particularly between Israel and Egypt.

How Iran Defied the U.S. to Become an International Power

By Sune Engel Rasmussen

June 30, 2024

The winner of Iran’s presidential election will inherit domestic discord and an economy battered by sanctions, but also a strength: Tehran has more sway on the international stage than in decades.

Iran, under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s leadership, thwarted decades of U.S. pressure and emerged from years of isolation largely by aligning itself with Russia and China, giving up on integration with the West and throwing in its lot with two major powers just as they amped up confrontation with Washington. Iran’s economy remains battered by U.S. sanctions, but oil sales to China and weapons deals with Russia have offered financial and diplomatic lifelines.

Iran heads to presidential run-off on July 5 amid record low turnout

By Maziar Motamedi

29 Jun 2024

Tehran, Iran – The snap presidential election in Iran is heading into a run-off next week after reformist-backed Masoud Pezeshkian and hardliner Saeed Jalili emerged at the top but failed to secure a majority in a vote with a record-low turnout.

Only 40 percent of more than 61 million eligible Iranians voted, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday, a new low in presidential elections since the country’s 1979 revolution.

The final numbers from election headquarters at the ministry showed that the moderate Pezeshkian received more than 10.41 million votes from a total of more than 24.5 million ballots counted, trailed by former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili with 9.47 million votes.

Conservative Speaker of the Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with 3.38 million votes, and conservative Islamic leader Mostafa Pourmohammadi, with 206,397 votes, were knocked out of the race. Two other candidates, Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani and government official Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, dropped out.

Communications Ministry warns contractors of penalties over Jendela Phase 1 internet connectivity delay in Sabah, Sarawak

30 Jun 2024

KULAI, June 30 — The Ministry of Communications is dissatisfied with the contractors for the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela) Phase 1 project in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak, which has yet to be fully completed.

Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching said the ministry is frequently visiting these two states to monitor the progress of the project, which was supposed to be completed in 2022 but is still under an extension of time (EOT).

“Currently, everything is under EOT, and those not completed under EOT are the ones we are dissatisfied with because this project was supposed to be completed in 2022, but there are still unfinished parts.

“Therefore, we often visit these areas to ensure that contractors prioritise the project. We may impose penalties on them, such as late delivery charges or liquidated damages, or review the contracts. In these two states, more than 20 per cent of the work is still incomplete,” she said.

She said this when met after the SPM 2023 Outstanding Student Recognition Programme at the Kulai District Education Office here today.
