Elderly UP Man Slits Own Throat On Bakrid, Calls It “Sacrifice To Allah”

A 60-year-old man in Deoria died by suicide on Bakrid.

-----------

A 60-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh died by suicide on Bakrid, leaving behind a note claiming he was offering himself as a "sacrifice to Allah."

The dead man, Ish Mohammad Ansari, allegedly used a knife to slit his throat inside a hut next to his home on Saturday morning. His family members rushed to the spot after hearing his cries and, with the help of the police, shifted him to the nearby hospital. He was later referred to Gorakhpur Medical College, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Ansari had returned from the Dargah of Sultan Syed Makhdoom Ashraf Shah after offering Eid prayers around 10 am, according to his family. “After returning home, Ansari went directly to the hut next to their house,” said his wife, Hajra Khatoon, as reported by the news agency PTI.

A handwritten suicide note found at the scene stunned the local residents and authorities. It read: "Insaan BakreKo Apne Bete Ki TarahPaalta Hai Aur Phir Qurbani Deta Hai. Woh Bhi Ek Jeev Hai. Qurbani Humein Khud Ki DeniChahiye. Main Apni Qurbani Allah Ke Rasool Ke Naam Par De Raha Hoon." (“A man raises a goat like his own child and then sacrifices it. That too is a living being. We should offer ourselves as sacrifice. I am offering myself in the name of Allah’s Messenger.”)

Arvind Kumar Verma, Additional Superintendent of Police, said, “Preliminary investigation suggests that Ansari inflicted the wound himself. However, we are probing the matter from all angles.”

Turkish prison blocks delivery of Islamic scholar Nursi’s writings sent for inmates

June 7, 2025

Turkey’s Silivri Prison, known for housing prisoners jailed over Gülen links, has rejected a shipment of the writings of the late Islamic scholar Said Nursi, whose teachings have inspired millions of people in Turkey and around the world, Turkish Minute reported.

Officials at Silivri No. 8 High-Security Prison returned two sets of Risale-i Nur — the foundational texts of the Nur movement inspired by Said Nursi, who authored the books — sent to inmates by a team affiliated with the opposition-aligned YeniAsya newspaper, citing prison regulations.

The books were returned unopened, with no specific security concern cited beyond “management rules,” prompting accusations of arbitrary censorship from the newspaper’s former editor-in-chief, KazımGüleçyüz.

Güleçyüz, who was himself imprisoned in Silivri in 2024 for offering condolences after the death of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, called the rejection “a new example of arbitrariness.”

Gülen, who inspired a global social movement with millions of followers worldwide, died at a Pennsylvania hospital at the age of 83 on October 20. He is known for his promotion of education, intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, although he spent the last decade of his life facing accusations from the Turkish government of  involvement in revelations of corruption investigations in late 2013 and a coup attempt in 2016. Gülen strongly denied the claims.

Gülen was greatly influenced by Nursi’s writings and promoted reading and understanding the Risale-i Nur books among his followers throughout his life.

The Risale-i Nur, written by Kurdish Sunni scholar Said Nursi in the early 20th century, is a non-political Qur’anic commentary that has been legally published and circulated in Turkey since the 1950s.

While President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) often speak favorably of Nursi’s legacy, the Nur movement — particularly those aligned with YeniAsya — increasingly accuse the government of weaponizing religion while sidelining genuine Islamic thought.

YeniAsya, one of the most prominent branches of the Nur movement, opposed the post-coup crackdown from the beginning, breaking with other Nur groups who supported Erdoğan’s purge of perceived Gülenists.

The paper and its affiliated religious community have repeatedly warned that the state’s repressive actions against one Islamic group could be extended to others — regardless of ideological differences.

They argue that Erdoğan’s past affiliations with radical Islamist circles and his consolidation of executive power have made the Nur movement, in its original non-political form, ideologically incompatible with his vision.

Although other factions within the Nur community embraced Erdoğan’s rule and remained silent or supportive during the mass arrests of Gülen-linked individuals, many aligned with YeniAsya openly criticized their stance.

The group has also warned that Erdoğan’s surface-level reverence for Nursi masks a deeper hostility to the movement’s core values, including the rejection of political Islam and the promotion of peaceful religious revival through education.

Despite no formal ban on Risale-i Nur in Turkey, the treatment of religious texts and their senders is increasingly shaped by political loyalties rather than legal principles.

Rights advocates have expressed concern that prisoners, particularly those convicted of terrorism-related charges with tenuous evidence, are being denied access to foundational Islamic literature in violation of domestic law and international standards on religious freedom.

The incident is likely to deepen the sense of alienation felt by religious conservatives who oppose both radical Islamism and state control over religious expression.

Observers say the Erdoğan government’s relationship with faith communities has evolved into a selective alliance — welcoming loyalty, punishing dissent and instrumentalizing religion to reinforce authoritarian control.

Terrorist Groups Such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab ‘Weaponise’ Food Access To Gain Support

By Africa Defense Forum

June 8, 2025

Boko Haram. Credit: Wikipedia Commons

--------

Terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab have long had a simple philosophy for controlling the people they can’t win over: Take away their food.

For years, their attacks against markets, supply sources and farmers have reduced food availability. They have contaminated and destroyed farmland in ways that make it unusable for years. In a 2025 study, researchers Simone Papale and Emanuele Castelli quoted a farmer in Somalia as saying, “wherever al-Shabaab goes, drought follows.”

Warfare and terrorist violence always have been linked to food security problems, starvation and famine. Terrorism can cause food disruptions, undermining production systems and supply routes. Terrorists take away their victims’ food and often use it as ransom, giving it back to force them into submission.

“This has major implications,” Papale and Castelli wrote for The Conversation in May. “The use of food as a weapon worsens humanitarian conditions. It causes the displacement of people in vulnerable settings. As a result, it sets in motion dangerous mechanisms of instability that can even undermine militants themselves, reducing their resources and operational capabilities.”

Boko Haram and al-Shabaab have challenged African security forces for years, attempting to topple governments and establish dictatorships. They have focused on regions where food security is minimal, such as Nigeria’s Borno State and southern Somalia. Often the terrorists will invade communities that already struggle with food supplies and make the situation worse by burning crops, banning farming and fishing, and poisoning water sources. In Somalia, al-Shabaab has disrupted trade routes and destroyed food imports, exacerbating famine.

Terrorists have been particularly destructive in the Sahel, Nigeria and Somalia, but other parts of the continent, such as Mozambique, also have suffered. The Islamic State group affiliate known as ISIS-Mozambique has overwhelmed Cabo Delgado province, robbing the region of traditional fishing and farming. As of early 2025, nearly 6,000 people had been killed, and up to half of the province’s 2.3 million people had lost their homes. Finding food and shelter had become a daily struggle.

Researchers say forces can reduce food access to achieve strategic and tactical goals, a practice as old as warfare itself. Doing so can break local communities’ resistance, forcing them to stop supporting the government. Controlling access can bolster terrorists’ political and military credibility. As conditions worsen, the terrorists will return stolen food as a gift, using it as ransom and political leverage. It can become a sort of starvation Ponzi scheme, as terrorists steal food from one region and give it out in another area. Boko Haram, researchers say, has struggled to distribute its confiscated food in different regions while maintaining its influence overall.

Papale and Castelli describe the practice as “a double-edged weapon” as it enables terrorists to acquire power and credibility while, at the same time, “generating conditions undermining their appeal and operational capabilities in the long run.” Over time, terrorists’ attacks on food resources and infrastructure destroy supply routes. Their destruction of crops and pastures becomes disastrous to everyone.

As conditions deteriorate in terrorist-dominated parts of Africa, the insurgents themselves begin to suffer. As food supplies wither, they lose the ability to manipulate their victims. Recruiting new members becomes harder. Over time, resistance builds, and militias mobilize against them.

As a result, humanitarian conditions worsen, local economies weaken and terrorists lose their will, reports the environmental magazine Down to Earth. The terrorists “have become victims of the emergencies they have helped generate,” the magazine noted. “They have increasingly struggled to supply nourishment for their troops and supporters. Consequently, they have witnessed a growing number of defections motivated by unsustainable conditions.”

“While food-centered tactics may help terrorist groups achieve operational objectives, they can backfire in the long run, generating disruptions undermining militants’ appeal and capabilities,” the researchers reported. “The deterioration of food security caused by the actions of Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab has had considerable repercussions for both the organizations during the last decade, decreasing the resources available to sustain contention while escalating tensions with the population. Insurgents have registered a progressive loss of support, experiencing increasing defections and growing opposition from local communities.”

Taliban Employs Advanced Technology To Build Sophisticated Drones

By Fidel Rahmati

June 8, 2025

The Taliban are using advanced, smuggled technologies to build drones with precision capabilities, including navigation systems and small ammunition payloads.

The British newspaper Daily Mail has reported that the Taliban have significantly advanced their drone development capabilities by utilizing imported high-tech components and sophisticated systems.

According to the report published on June 7, the Taliban procure most of the electronic and mechanical components for their drones through global black markets and smuggling networks. This includes small electric motors, GPS modules, advanced sensors, and flight control systems.

The components used in Taliban drones largely originate from countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates, and some European nations. These parts, despite being civilian in nature, are repurposed to enhance the functionality and lethality of Taliban drones, improving their precision and operational effectiveness.

With these advanced technologies, Taliban-made drones can now fly at medium altitudes with reliable speed, capable of conducting reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering missions with high accuracy. Their operational range reportedly extends several kilometers, making them a tactical threat to remote military installations and convoys.

The report highlights that the Taliban benefit from the expertise of trained engineers and technicians, many of whom have backgrounds in military or armed groups. These individuals, operating through informal networks, are instrumental in transferring both technical knowledge and physical components into Afghanistan.

Security analysts cited by Daily Mail warn that the growing sophistication of the Taliban’s drone program presents a serious challenge to regional peace, especially considering the porous borders and the presence of other militant groups. The use of such drones could alter the nature of asymmetric warfare in the region.

As of now, the Taliban have not responded to these claims. However, concerns persist as the group still possesses a considerable cache of weapons and equipment left behind by the former Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces after the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

Given the Taliban’s increasing technological prowess, experts are urging international agencies and regional governments to strengthen surveillance and counter-drone measures. There is also a call to regulate the export of dual-use technologies that could be weaponized by non-state actors like the militant groups.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco Bans Animal Sacrifice On Eid Al-Adha — Due To Economic And Agricultural Crisis in the Country

June 7, 2025

To uphold the religious significance of sacrifice, King Mohammed VI announced that he would perform the sacrifice on behalf of all Moroccans on Eid al-Adha. (Express photo by Bhupendra Rana

------------

For the first time in years, Morocco will observe Eid al-Adha — the “Festival of Sacrifice” — without its central ritual: the slaughter of sheep.

Muslims in the North African nation, Morocco, will abstain from the animal sacrifice ritual due to a royal directive from King Mohammed VI, who urged citizens to abstain from the practice due to the country’s deepening economic difficulties and a prolonged agricultural crisis, according to a report by The Guardian.

In a statement broadcast in February by Morocco’s Islamic affairs minister on the state-run Al Aoula TV channel, the king said, “Performing it in these difficult circumstances will cause real harm to large segments of our people, especially those with limited income.” The monarch, who is also the kingdom’s highest religious authority, added that he would perform the sacrifice on behalf of all Moroccans.

Story continues below this adThe North African nation has been suffering the consequences of a six-year drought, which has severely impacted the country’s livestock population. Reports suggest that sheep herds have declined by nearly 38 percent since 2016. With supply shrinking, prices have skyrocketed. Last year, a single sheep sold for as much as $600 (approximately ₹51,426), far exceeding Morocco’s monthly minimum wage of $324 (₹27,833). As a result, many families can no longer afford to participate in the tradition. A survey by the Moroccan Centre for Citizenship found that 55 percent of households struggled to bear the cost of sacrificial animals.

In response to the crisis, the Moroccan government suspended import duties and value-added tax on cattle and sheep in its 2025 budget to help control prices.

Although the king’s directive marks a rare intervention, it is not unprecedented. His father, King Hassan II, suspended Eid sacrifices on three occasions during his reign — in times of war, drought, and under IMF-imposed austerity that removed food subsidies.

Morocco, where more than 99 percent of the population identifies as Muslim, has one of the highest red meat consumption rates in Africa.

Allahabad HC grants relief to journalist booked for reporting on mosque demolition in UP

08-07-2025

The Allahabad High Court has set aside two orders in a case against Mohammad Seraj Ali, a BBC journalist named in a first information report for reporting on the demolition of a mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, Live Law reported.

The orders had denied him a No Objection Certificate for the renewal or re-issuance of his passport, which was quashed by the High Court.

Ali, along with another journalist named Mukul Chauhan, had published a video report in June 2021 about the mosque in Barabanki while working for The Wire. The district administration demolished the mosque in Ram SanehiGhat in May 2021, claiming that it was an illegal structure, PTI reported.

An FIR was subsequently lodged against several persons, including Ali, under Indian Penal Code provisions pertaining to wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot, promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, etc., punishment for criminal conspiracy and printing or engraving defamatory matter.

Thousands offer Eid prayers at Srinagar’s Hazratbal shrine

Jun 08, 2025

The biggest congregational Eid prayers in Kashmir was held at Dargah Hazratbal in Srinagar while authorities didn’t allow Eid prayers at City’s grand Mosque, Jamia Masjid, Srinagar, and places Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest.

Thousands of worshippers on Saturday offered Eid- ul-Adha prayers at Dargah Hazratbal where J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah, NC president Farooq Abdullah and the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also offered Eid prayers. Elaborate security arrangements were made across Kashmir for peaceful eid prayers. However, authorities didn’t allow people to offer prayers at the city’s Grand Mosque Jamia Masjid in the old city and the main entrance of the mosque was kept locked. This was the seventh consecutive year when Eid prayers were disallowed at the Jamia Masjid.

“Eid Mubarak! Yet again, Kashmir wakes up to the sad reality: no Eid prayers at Eidgah, and Jama Masjid locked down — for the 7th straight year. I too have been detained at my home. In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are deprived of their fundamental right to pray — even on their most important religious occasion celebrated across the world,” Mirwaiz Umar Farooq wrote on X.

J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah said he prayed for peaceful J&K on the occasion of Eid ul Zuha...”I hope this Eid will bring peace and brotherhood for people of J&K,” he said. Abdullah, however, termed it unfortunate that Eid nimaz wasn’t allowed at Jamia Masjid. “I don’t know on what grounds this decision was taken.” The chief minister said that after the killing of tourists in Pahalgam, the same people protested against the killings. We need to trust our own people,” he told reporters after offering Eid prayers.

Kashmir 1989–90: Veterans call for reckoning over state failures & forgotten exodus

Jun 8, 2025

Chandigarh: The Kashmir insurgency of 1989–90 remains one of the most turbulent and tragic episodes in India's contemporary history. It was not merely the rise of an armed rebellion—it signified a complete breakdown of state authority, intelligence apparatus, and moral leadership. These views were expressed on Saturday at a literary event held at the Chandigarh Press Club, where key voices from the military and strategic community came together to reflect on these defining events and the enduring lessons they offer.

General V P Malik (retd), former Chief of the Army Staff, questioned the deeper systemic failures that led to the Valley's implosion. "Why did the law and order and security situation in Jammu and Kashmir collapse so completely in 1990?" he asked. "How did the culture of Kashmiriyat—rooted in peaceful coexistence—get overtaken by militant Islamist ideology?" Gen. Malik emphasized the need to study the past to safeguard the future, noting that the Kashmir crisis carries significant lessons for today's policymakers. Former army chief also spoke about deep necked corruption in the Jammu and Kashmir administration/government at that time.

Col Daljeet Singh Cheema, author and motivational speaker, traced the insurgency to Pakistan's long-standing refusal to accept the terms of Partition. He argued that after suffering a decisive defeat in the 1971 war, Pakistan shifted its strategy, adopting General Zia-ul-Haq's doctrine of "Bleed India with a thousand cuts"—a strategy that fuels insurgency through proxy warfare and religious radicalization. "An Islamic state that believes it can rely solely on Allah and its Army, and sees its faith as superior, will not change its policy easily," Col. Cheema warned.

No tolerance for terror, allies must understand, says India

By Rezaul H Laskar

During meetings with British foreign secretary David Lammy, PM Modi said India valued Britain’s backing for the fight against cross-border terrorism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar reiterated India’s “zero tolerance” policy for terrorism and the need for decisive international action against terror and those who support it during meetings with British foreign secretary David Lammy on Saturday.

Modi said India valued Britain’s backing for the fight against cross-border terrorism while Jaishankar said India’s partners should understand the “zero tolerance” policy for terrorism as the country will never accept the perpetrators of terrorism being treated at par with victims.

The remarks by the top Indian leadership, made against the backdrop of several countries hyphenating India and Pakistan during last month’s military clashes, reiterated to the world community New Delhi’s new approach to fighting cross-border terrorism backed by Islamabad. Britain’s foreign office had said before Lammy’s meeting with Indian interlocutors that he would address how the current peace between India and Pakistan can be supported for regional stability.

Modi said in a social media post after meeting Lammy that he values “UK’s support for India’s fight against cross-border terrorism”. He also appreciated Lammy’s “substantive contribution to the remarkable progress in our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, further strengthened by the recently concluded FTA”.

Pakistan 'dismayed' over PM Modi's remarks in J&K over Pahalgam terror attack

June 07, 2025

Pakistan on Friday (June 6, 2025) said it was "dismayed" over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks that Islamabad was involved in the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed.

Mr. Modi on Friday accused Pakistan of targeting "insaniyat and Kashmiriyat" through the terror attack in Pahalgam. "Our neighbouring country stands against humanity, social harmony, and economic prosperity," he said while addressing a rally in Katra after inaugurating the first direct train service to the Kashmir Valley.

"Not only that, it is also the enemy of poor people's 'rozi-roti' [bread and butter]," Mr. Modi said, as he reiterated that the April 22 Pahalgam attack was a stark example through which Pakistan "intended to incite communal violence in India and cripple the earnings of hardworking Kashmiris".

Commenting on his remarks, Pakistan's Foreign Office said it "firmly rejects the baseless and misleading remarks" made by the Prime Minister.

Gazans hold Eid prayers outdoors in the rubble, with scarce food: ‘The worst feast’

7 June 2025

Palestinians across the Gaza Strip marked the start of one of Islam’s most important holidays with prayers outside destroyed mosques and homes early Friday, with little hope that Israel’s war against Hamas will end soon.

With much of Gaza in rubble, men, women and children were forced to hold the traditional Eid al-Adha prayers in the open air and with food supplies dwindling, families were having to make do with what they could scrape together for the three-day feast.

“This is the worst feast that the Palestinian people have experienced because of the unjust war against the Palestinian people,” said KamelEmran after attending prayers in the southern city of Khan Younis. “There is no food, no flour, no shelter, no mosques, no homes, no mattresses. … The conditions are very, very harsh.”

The Islamic holiday begins on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during the Hajj season in Saudi Arabia. For the second year, Muslims in Gaza were not able to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the traditional pilgrimage.

Iranian President Pezeshkian: Muslim unity would have prevented Gaza atrocities

08 Jun 2025

Iran Pushes Islamic Unity Through High-Level Regional Calls During Eid al-Adha

BySETH J. FRANTZMAN

JUNE 7, 2025

Iran has embarked on a series of high-level phone calls with regional countries during the Eid al-Adha Islamic holiday. The goal is to push for Islamic unity. Iran also wants to use this against Israel. Iran knows that its proxies have been weakened, as evidenced by a recent Israeli airstrike in Beirut targeting a Hezbollah site. Iran is also involved in high-stakes nuclear talks with the US.

Iranian state media said on June 7 that Iran’s foreign minister reached out to Egypt. This comes just a week after he visited Egypt. “Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatt, held a telephone conversation in which they discussed bilateral ties and regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza,” Iran’s state media IRNA said.

“The two foreign ministers also exchanged Eid al-Adha greetings. Araqchi visited Egypt earlier this week on Monday, where he met with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, his counterpart, and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi.”

The Iranian diplomat also spoke with his Pakistani counterpart, Muhammad Ishaq Dar. They “discussed bilateral ties, as well as the latest regional and international developments,” IRNA noted.

Once A Supporter Of Iran’s Hardliners, Rapper Now On Death Row For Insulting Islam

By GABE LEVIN

08-06-2025

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The tattoos covering Iranian rapper Tataloo’s face stand out against the gray prison uniform the 37-year-old now wears as he awaits execution, his own rise and fall tracing the chaos of the last decade of Iranian politics.

Tataloo, whose full name is Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, faces a death sentence after being convicted on charges of “insulting Islamic sanctities.” It’s a far cry from when he once supported a hardline Iranian presidential candidate.

Tataloo’s music became popular among the Islamic Republic’s youth, as it challenged Iran’s theocracy at a time when opposition to the country’s government was splintered and largely leaderless.

The rapper’s lyrics became increasingly political after the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini and the subsequent wave of nationwide protests. He also appeared in music videos that criticized the authorities.

“When you show your face in a music video, you are saying, ‘Hey, I’m here, and I don’t care about your restrictions,'” said Ali Hamedani, a former BBC journalist who interviewed the rapper in 2005. “That was brave.”

“This ruling has now been confirmed and is ready for execution,” judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir told reporters at a press conference last month.

Israel Says it Killed Head of Mujahideen Brigades in Gaza

Israel’s military has said it killed the head of the Mujahideen Brigades, Asaad Abou Sharia, in Gaza City on Saturday.

His death and that of his brother Ahmed Abu Sharia were confirmed by the militant group hours after Gaza’s Civil Defense reported that an Israeli airstrike had hit their family home in the Sabra area of Gaza City.

More than one missile landed in the area. The target seemed to have been a multi-floor residential building, but the explosion damaged several other houses nearby, according to witnesses and media.

Taliban Emir Mullah Haibatullah Decries ‘Zionist Assaults And Acts Of Oppression’ In Gaza

June 7, 2025

The emir of the Taliban denounced Israel’s military operations against Hamas and other terror groups as “Zionist assaults and acts of oppression” and said that his Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan continues to provide “unwavering support for the oppressed people of Palestine.” While Taliban Emir Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada didn’t explicitly name Hamas, the Taliban has openly supported that terror group’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, praised Hamas’s leadership and its ability to withstand Israeli military operations, and used the terms “people of Palestine” and “Hamas” interchangeably.

Akhundzada’s declaration of support for Palestinians came at the end of his lengthy Eid al Adha “Congratulatory Message” to Muslims worldwide that was released by Al Emerah, the Taliban’s official website, on June 4, 2025. His message primarily focused on the need for Muslims and their leaders to “advance and ensure the success of the Shariah system,” or Islamic law.

Akhundzada’s titles are “emir al muminin” and “sheikh al Quran wal hadith,” which translate to “commander of the faithful” and “scholar of the Quran and hadith,” respectively. These titles and Akhundzada’s roles as the leader of the group that ousted the US from Afghanistan and the head of the Afghan government position him as an authoritative voice amongst some segments of the Muslim community.

“The Zionist assaults and acts of oppression against women, children, and oppressed Muslims in Gaza and other regions of Palestine continue unabated,” Akhundzada said. “These actions constitute grave crimes against humanity and severe injustice. The Islamic Emirate once again declares its unwavering support for the oppressed people of Palestine, strongly condemns all forms of aggression and tyranny committed against them, and calls for their immediate cessation.”

Taliban leader warns of collapse if internal divisions persist

by Ahmad Azizi

08-06-2025

KANDAHAR — Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, in his Eid al-Adha sermon, delivered Saturday in Kandahar, from which only an audio recording was released, warned that disunity, disobedience and internal power struggles could bring down the Taliban’s rule.

According to the 45-minute audio posted by the Taliban’s chief spokesman, Akhundzada cautioned that the Taliban rule would face collapse if its members failed to uphold discipline and cohesion.

“If injustice arises among us, if we seek positions to build our own status, power, and prestige, and treat public funds as spoils for personal use, and you begin to distrust us and disobey us — and we begin to distrust you — then this system will collapse, and this security will turn into insecurity,” he said.

Mercy Corps warns Kabul may run out of water by 2030

By Fidel Rahmati

June 8, 2025

The international humanitarian organization Mercy Corps has warned that seven million residents of Kabul face a critical water shortage crisis. If current trends continue, the city could experience complete drought by 2030.

Dayne Curry, Mercy Corps’ Afghanistan director, emphasized the urgent need for global attention, stating, “The absence of water means communities will be forced to leave. Without intervention, large-scale migration and increased hardship will follow for the people of Afghanistan.”

According to Mercy Corps, over the past decade, Kabul’s groundwater levels have dropped by as much as 30 meters due to rapid population growth and climate change. Approximately half of the deep wells, which serve as the city’s primary drinking water sources, have dried up.

The report highlights that water extraction far exceeds natural replenishment rates, posing a serious threat to the availability of clean water for millions of people. This unsustainable use endangers both public health and social stability in the capital.

Additionally, the report points to widespread contamination of Kabul’s groundwater caused by sewage, salinity, and arsenic, turning access to safe drinking water into a daily struggle for many households.

UNHCR: Millions of Refugees unable to celebrate Eid al-Adha

By Fidel Rahmati

June 8, 2025

Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has highlighted that millions of refugees worldwide, including many Afghans, are unable to celebrate Eid al-Adha this year.

On Friday, June 6, Grandi issued a message of Eid greetings while drawing attention to the plight of those displaced by war and facing severe economic hardships.

He emphasized that these vulnerable populations live under extremely difficult conditions in crisis-affected regions such as Gaza, Sudan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Due to their circumstances, they are deprived of the opportunity to observe the celebrations they long for and deserve.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, a significant number of Afghan citizens have fled the country due to escalating security and economic challenges. This displacement has compounded the struggles faced by Afghan refugees during important cultural and religious holidays.

'These Are Muslim Values, These Are Canadian Values': PM Mark Carney Trolled On Social Media For His Eid Message

Jun 8, 2025

Prime Minister Mark Carney was trolled on X for his speech at an Eid al-Adha celebration hosted by the Muslim Association of Canada. "The message of Eid resonates in this room, across this city, and it should resonate with all Canadians... the lessons and values of Eid are the same. Our Canada is a diverse country, proud home to different beliefs, different languages and different cultures. Those are differences that make us unique, and make us strong. We can pray differently but all of us must come together around the values of Eid," Caney said. "The values of community, of generosity and yes, of sacrifice. These are Muslim values, these are Canadian values," the PM said.

"On Easter he couldn’t even speak the name of Jesus Christ and made up some ridiculous notion that the holiday is about celebrating new beginnings (because it’s Spring?) and then painted eggs," another post read.

Indian-origin journalist RupaSubramanya condemned the speech and said Islamic values are not Canadian values. "And there ain't nothing bigoted in saying that," she posted on X.

'Putin is a murderer' — Zelensky rejects Trump's claim that Russia, Ukraine are like 'kids'

June 7, 2025

President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s comparison of Russia’s war against Ukraine to “children fighting in a park” during his interview with ABC News published on June 6.

"We are not kids with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin at the playground in the park," Zelensky said, as quoted by the TV network. "He is a murderer who came to this park to kill the kids."

The U.S. president, who has repeatedly claimed he alone can bring an end to the war, said on June 5 that it might be best not to intervene in Russia’s war against Ukraine for now.

"Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy,” Trump said at a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House. “They hate each other, and they’re fighting in a park, and you try and pull them apart. They don’t want to be pulled. Sometimes you’re better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart."

Details: US officials, speaking anonymously to Reuters, said Russia’s "retaliation" for the Security Service of Ukraine-led operation is still forthcoming, despite Moscow claiming Friday’s large-scale air attack as a response.

One official noted the timing of a potential strike is uncertain but could occur "within days" and be "asymmetrical", differing from Ukraine’s operation. Another suggested it would likely involve a combined air attack using various weapons.

New circular agriculture plan aims to tackle Sarawak’s sky-high beef costs, says Abang Johari

08 Jun 2025

GEDONG, June 8 — The state government is actively developing a new approach to reduce dependency on imported cattle and feed by introducing a sustainable circular agriculture model, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

This initiative aims to address the high cost of beef in the state, which has been reported as among the most expensive in the country, reaching up to RM95 per kilogramme (kg)

Abang Johari attributed the current high prices primarily to Sarawak’s heavy dependence on imported cattle and feed, particularly from Australia.

“However, the export tax imposed by Australia is quite high and payments are made in Australian dollars, which drives up the cost,” he told reporters after attending the Ibadah Korban Ceremony at the Al-Kawthar Mosque here today.

Abang Johari said the new strategy involves implementing feedlot farming systems instead of traditional open grazing, allowing cattle to be reared using locally-produced feed derived from agricultural waste mixed with napier grass.

'Riots, looters ... will be solved': Trump admin steps in; deploys 2,000 soldiers as protests against ICE raids escalate in LA- top developments

Jun 8, 2025

The Donald Trump administration stepped up to deal with the protests in Los Angeles over immigration enforcement raids that entered a volatile phase this weekend. The federal government took over the California national guard and deployed 2,000 soldiers.

The move came after US President Donald Trump criticised California officials including governor Gavin Newsom and threatened federal action.

ICE reported 118 arrests as part of operations that began Friday, including at a warehouse in the downtown fashion district. Authorities allege the employer used false documents for some workers. Demonstrators have accused ICE and other agencies of using excessive force and say their actions have sparked fear in immigrant communities.

Trump ordered 2,000 National Guardsmen to be deployed to Los Angeles, according to his spokeswoman, as clashes with federal agents continued for a second night amid protests over immigration raids.

Trump ropes in Palantir to compile data on Americans

Jun 8, 2025

WASHINGTON: In March, President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for the federal govt to share data across agencies, raising questions over whether he might compile a master list of personal information on Americans that could give him untold surveillance power.

Trump has not publicly talked about the effort since. But behind the scenes, officials have quietly put technological building blocks into place to enable his plan.

Representatives of Palantir are also speaking to at least two other agencies - the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service - about buying its technology. The push has put a key Palantir product called Foundry into at least four federal agencies, including DHS and the health and human services department. Widely adopting Foundry, which organizes and analyzes data, paves the way for Trump to easily merge information from different agencies, govt officials said.

'Like a rugby player': Elon Musk hit Scott Bessent's ribcage after being called a 'fraud', Trump called it 'too much'

Jun 8, 2025

A more salacious account of the beginning of the Elon Musk- Donald Trump feud has now surfaced, courtesy MAGA activist Steve Bannon, who claimed that the physical fight between Elon Musk and Scott Bessent was not just a push or shove. But Elon Musk hit Bessent's ribcage like a rugby player and Bessent too hit Musk. Multiple people had to step in to break up the fight as they reached the then NSA Mike Waltz's office. Bannon earlier narrated the physical fight but now presented more details of it after Trump, Musk's ultimate showdown.

But this episode had no contribution to Elon Musk's recent black eye as this took place weeks ago when Waltz was the National Security Adviser but the episode can be earmarked as the beginning of the end.

Mid-April, Musk and Bessent went to the Oval officer to make their respective cases about their preferences for the acting IRS commissioner. Trump supported Bessent's choice which rankled Musk. After they exited the Oval Office, they started exchanging insults. Bessent called Elon Musk a fraud. That led to the exchange of blows.
