Members of cow vigilante group Gau Raksha Dal,
accompanied by police personnel, allegedly raided a house in Chandigarh on
suspicion of storing and selling beef recently.
The incident recently took place in the Indira Nagar
area of Chandigarh, where the house belonging to a Muslim family was raided and
their refrigerator was confiscated.
The video of the incident, in which members of a cow
vigilante group were seen entering the house and taking out a refrigerator, was
widely shared on social media.
The incident prompted many social media users to
question the authority of cow vigilantes raiding a house. Many expressed
concerns over the incident as police accompanied the cow vigilantes in raiding
the house.
Despite repeated attempts, SSP Chandigarh could not be
availed for their remarks on the incident. This story will be updated as and
when they respond.

Thousands of Muslims gathered in Great Lever today to
celebrate the birthday of holy Prophet Muhammad.
And some Muslims travelled all the way from Spain,
Italy, Scotland, and Cornwall to join in the faith walk.
Before leaving the Makkah Mosque, in Great Lever, to
go on a parade there was a wide range of food, tea and coffee, and ice cream on
offer, which was all free.
Speaking about the importance and significance of the
event, Bilal Ahmed, who attends the mosque and helps to organise the annual
event, said: “We are celebrating the birth of our Prophet Muhammad, his life,
his legacy, his teachings, and we are here to show within the community how us
Muslims have come together to show the love we have for our Prophet and to
express it to the world too.

Prophet taught us love, compassion, harmony, and he taught us all the things
that shows Islam is one of the fastest growing religions now.
“People have come from all over the country, from
Lincoln, Bedford and from Africa and from around the globe that have come to
attend the event.
“The Prophet came as a mercy to the whole of mankind,
meaning not just for Muslims, he is a mercy for everyone.
“We are here to celebrate his birth which is the
greatest blessing that God has given to us; we are here to commemorate him.”
Mayor of Bolton, Mohammed Ayub, was in attendance at
the event.

tradition now for 25 to 26 years now and every year we do this anniversary for
the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, which we get provisions from the police
and other departments which I am very thankful to.
“All of the people who take part are very peaceful.”

Qasim, who helped organise the event said: “This event is to highlight and
showcase the message that the beloved Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon
him, spread across the world.
“He is a universal Prophet, a Prophet for the entire
universe who was sent as a mercy for people.
“This event shows how peaceful Islam is, it is full of
love, peace, and prosperity and it is bringing everyone together to celebrate
on this beautiful occasion.
“We have people here from all walks of life to show he
is a universal Prophet.”

The continued presence of US forces in Iraq is
detrimental to the Arab country’s security as Washington has always put its
interests over Iraq’s interests, says a political commentator.
Mohammed al-Khazaali, in an interview with the Press
TV website, said security analyses show American bases are where terrorist and
extremist groups are nurtured.
He called for the immediate ouster of US forces from
the Arab country, saying Americans have a “dark history” of killing Iraqi
people and using extremist groups as a tool to advance US interests.
“Based on the findings of many security analyses, the
bases of the US-led coalition are where terrorist elements are nurtured, and
hence the continued presence of the US forces in Iraq poses a threat to the
security of Iraq as well as its neighbors,” Khazaali told the Press TV website.
More than two decades into America’s deadly invasion
of Iraq, 2,500 American troops are still present in the country who Washington
claims are meant to advise and assist Iraqi forces fighting the remnants of the
Daesh terror group.
Iraqi officials and political groups have repeatedly
called for the ouster of American forces from the country, especially since the
2020 US assassination of Iran’s top anti-terror commander General Qassem
Soleimani in Baghdad.
According to the outcome of the “strategic dialogue”
held between the US and Iraq in 2020 and 2021, the US was stipulated to end its
military presence in Iraq by the end of 2021.
However, Washington later said it would only withdraw
its combat forces from the Arab country and would keep hundreds of troops in an
advisory capacity, which experts dismiss as an attempt to hoodwink the
international community.
Khazaali said all branches of government in Iraq agree
that the US should get out of Iraq, stressing that the country can alone fight
terrorists there.
“The three branches of the Iraqi government, namely
the executive, the parliament and the judiciary, have repeatedly called for the
withdrawal of the forces of the US-led coalition,” he stressed.
“They have declared that Iraq does not need these
forces as its own forces are capable of protecting Iraq’s security and have a
long experience of fighting Al-Qaeda and Daesh.”
Khazaali cited remarks by Iraqi Prime Minister
Mohammed Shia al-Sudani earlier this week that Iraq does not need foreign
combat troops and even the presence of military advisors should end.
“We are not in need of combat troops; what we have are
military advisers, but even their presence needs regulation, in terms of their
size, location and how long they remain,” Sudani told the UAE-based paper The
National.
He added that there needs to be a “clear
timeline" to end the presence of foreign troops in Iraq.
Khazaali, on the reason behind the US insistence on
remaining in Iraq despite the elimination of the Daesh threat, said the US
presence in Iraq is only in the interests of the US government and not Iraqis.
“The US is trying to boost its influence in Iraq as it
has a strategic significance for the US. Iraq can be a base for the US from which
it can better advance its West Asia interests. Therefore, the Americans do
everything to stay in Iraq,” he said.
Khazaali stressed that the Iraqi government should put
more pressure on the US to end its military presence in Iraq, as it is only a
source of problems.
“The American forces’ continued presence is another
form of occupation that should be dealt with more seriously by the Iraqi
government,” he noted in a conversation with the Press TV website.
The analyst warned that anti-US resistance forces in
Iraq are determined to fight the occupiers in case they refuse to leave the
Arab country.
“Efforts by Iraqi resistance forces foiled America’s
plots to sow divisions among Iraqis and to incite radical groups into
destroying Iraq,” he stated.
“These resistance forces appear to be determined to
confront the American forces and if necessary, force them out of Iraq. The US
forces killed many Iraqis and the extremist groups they nurtured also killed
many Iraqis.”

ISLAMABAD: Sindh interim Home Minister Brigadier
(retd) Haaris Nawaz Sunday said the Afghan Taliban and TTP were ideologically
the same.
Talking to a website, he said the US deliberately left
its weapons and ammunition behind before quitting Afghanistan, which had been
taken away by terrorist groups like the TTP, BLA, BLF and Daesh. Now these
weapons were being used against Pakistan.
He said terrorists from the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban
Pakistan were involved in most terror activities countrywide.
To a query about escalation in terror attacks in
Pakistan, Nawaz said such groups didn’t want to see Pakistan economically
stable while India and some other countries were actively aiding them.
“They want to block work on CPEC at all costs since
they fully understand that if this project gets completed, it will prove a
great leap for Pakistan’s economy.
“Currently, it takes China 90 days to reach the Middle
East and other markets through the sea. Once CPEC is completed, it will take
the Chinese consignments eight days to reach there through Kashghar.
Evidentially, it will change the destiny of the whole region,” he said.
Commenting on the Taliban-TTP relationship, he
reminded that the latter had offered support to the Taliban to drive the US out
of Afghanistan and now the Taliban were providing them shelter.
“We are asking the Afghan Taliban to stop the use of
their soil against Pakistan. Despite their assurances, they aren’t living up to
their commitment,” he said.
Talking about the actions against terrorists in
different parts of the country, the Sindh home minister said, “Our forces are
‘actively undertaking actions’ against the terrorists but cooperation by the
people is of pivotal significance. The masses should cooperate with the forces
and intimate the agencies about the presence of terrorists in their area.”
He was of the view that terrorism had not been
uprooted fully in different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, the website reported that the outlawed TTP
spokesperson Muhammad Khurasani had accepted responsibility for the recent
terror attacks in Pakistan and claimed that they had carried out 106 attacks in
different parts of the country out of which 100 were carried out in various
districts of KP and four in Balochistan.

Procession with Tipu image sparks violence in
Karnataka, 4 injured
Shivamogga: An Eid Milad procession on Sunday stirred
up tension in Karnataka’s Shivamogga after stones were thrown at the
processionists and the police, resulting in four people getting injured and
imposition of Section 144 of CrPC in Ragigudda area as a precautionary measure.
Trouble started early in the day when some Muslim
youths erected a large portrait of erstwhile Mysuru state ruler Tipu Sultan at
Ragigudda-Shanti Nagar on the outskirts of the city. Right-wing activists took
objection, claiming that the portrait depicts Tipu Sultan killing a Hindu
warrior.
Local youths gathered at the spot. Shivamogga SP GK
Mithun Kumar reached out to leaders from both communities to address the issue.
He urged them to persuade the youths to have peaceful Eid Milad celebrations.
The SP instructed the organizers to cover the portrait with a curtain to
prevent the situation from escalating further.
As tensions continued to rise, additional
reinforcements were summoned, with police personnel patrolling the area to
disperse the groups.
A few hours later, a Muslim youth heightened tensions
by using his blood to inscribe the words ‘Sher Tipu’ on the portrait. Following
this, security measures in the city were beefed up.
When the processionists reached Ragigudda area around
8pm, a group of miscreants began throwing stones at the procession. In
response, some youths in the procession started pelting stones at nearby
houses. Cops caned the crowd to disperse them. Shivamogga SP said four people
sustained injuries and were admitted to McGann Hospital. As a precautionary
measure, prohibitory orders have been imposed in Ragigudda area.

Hyderabad: Two cases have been booked for separate
incidents of nuisance during the Milad un Nabi procession in Hyderabad on
Sunday, October 1 in Ziaguda and Hussainalam.
Several youngsters were taken into custody by the
police on Monday for raising Jai Shri Ram slogans while a Milad un Nabi
procession was underway at Ziaguda. Teams of the Task Force and Kulsumpura
police identified and raided the houses of the youngsters and detained them.
The Kulsumpura police initiated action and booked a
case after the video of the incident went viral on social media.
At least six persons were booked by the Kulsumpura
police for creating trouble.
The two groups of youngsters raised religious slogans
in Ziaguda as the Milad un Nabi rally was underway.
The incident occurred in the morning when a group of
young people, as part of the Milad un Nabi celebrations, took out a bike rally.
They stopped on Kulsumpura road, raised slogans, and waved flags after parking
their motorcycles on the road.
Soon, another group of youngsters gathered and began
to loudly shout ‘Jai Shri Ram’. They had assembled near a tiffin centre with
saffron flags in hand. However, the Muslim youth eventually left the area.
Case in Hussainialam
In a separate incident that occurred in Hussainialam,
a group of people, who participated in a Milad un Nabi rally were booked after
they allegedly damaged a flower pot kept outside the temple at GollaKhidkhi.
Locals have alleged that the police did not provide
proper security and the negligence of the police led to the incident. No
arrests have been made so far.

Delhi police arrest NIA's most wanted and suspected
ISIS terrorist Shahnawaz and two others

NEW DELHI: In a major crackdown, a special cell of
Delhi police arrested National Investigation Agency's (NIA) most wanted and
suspected ISIS terrorist Shahnawaz alias Shafi Ujjama and two others.
The anti-terror agency had placed a reward of Rs 3
lakhs on the arrested terrorist Shahnawaz.
Shahnawaz, who hails from a neighbourhood in
south-east Delhi, was also wanted in the Pune ISIS case.
An engineer by profession, Shahnawaz had escaped from
Pune police custody and was living in Delhi,. reported ANI quoting Delhi
police.
Shahnawaz was briefly caught by Pune Police on the
intervening night of July 17-18 when he was trying to steal a motorcycle in the
Kothrud area of Pune. He escaped from custody while he was being taken to his
hideout for further questioning.
Police later caught two of Shahnawaz's associates -
Imran and Yunus - in Pune and realised the men are likely part of an
IS-inspired module.
During investigation, it came to light that a
foreign-based handler had possibly put Shahnawaz in touch with Imran and Yunus
in February, with instructions to execute a terror strike.
"So far, three people including Shahnawaz alias
Shafi Uzzama, have been arrested by Delhi Police Special Cell. The module was
planning to carry out terror incidents in North India, taking instructions from
foreign-based handlers. Incriminating materials were recovered including
materials suspected to be used for IED fabrication," said police.
Delhi Police Special Cell has also detained some other
people. Further investigation in the case is under way, said Delhi police.

Afghan embassy in New Delhi shuts down citing 'lack of
support from host government'

The Afghan embassy in New Delhi — headed by a
pre-Taliban takeover ambassador — formally announced its closure shortly after
midnight on Sunday, citing a "lack of support from the host
government" (India) and resources.
The embassy and ambassador Farid Mamundzay posted a
three-page statement on their respective social media handles in which they
also confirmed the authenticity of the note verbale (NV) of September 25 to the
external affairs ministry which has been floating online since Thursday. The
ministry had not commented officially on the post-midnight statement issued by
the Afghan mission till late Sunday evening.
Top-most of the three reasons cited for the closure in
the media statement is the lack of support from India. "The embassy has
experienced a notable absence of crucial support (including diplomatic) from
the host government, which has hindered our ability to carry out our duties
effectively." This had been articulated in greater detail in the NV which
also cited at least 10 such previous communications with the ministry that had
remained unattended; particularly after India stationed a technical team at the
Indian mission in Kabul from June 2022. India, as of date, does not have
diplomatic relations with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
The Afghan consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad,
however, appear to be charting their own course — purportedly under instruction
from Taliban-controlled Kabul. While the consul general of the Mumbai mission
Zakia Wardak had made a public announcement of disagreement with the September
25 NV from the Delhi mission informing India about the decision to close from
October 1, the latest media statement from the embassy refers to both
consulates.
"The embassy also acknowledges that, given the
gravity of this decision, there may be some who receive support and
instructions from Kabul that may differ from our current course of action…. It
is our firm belief that any actions taken by these consulates are not in
consonance with the objectives of a legitimate or elected government and rather
serve the interests of an illegitimate regime."
The embassy in Delhi has been operational for 22
years, opening office after India resumed diplomatic ties with Afghanistan
following the removal of the Taliban regime in 2001 as a result of the US-led
war on terror. As a consequence of the closure, all the properties and
facilities of the embassy will be transferred to the custodial authority of
India as the host country in accordance with Article 45 of the Vienna
Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

All India Catholic Union’s annual general body meeting
urge Christians to work with civil society to stop assaults on Constitution

India’s main group of lay Catholics has urged
Christians “to work with civil society and people of goodwill in all religions
to stop assaults on the Constitution (and) demotion of institutions such as the
Election Commission of India”.
The message came from the All India Catholic Union’s
(AICU) annual general body meeting --- the last before next year’s general
election and a slew of state elections this year. Christian-majority Mizoram is
one of the states headed for the polls this year.
The Centre has proposed a law to water down a Supreme
Court judgment that mandates a neutral collegium for the appointment of
election commissioners.
In a statement, the group said: “In the backdrop of
the continuing violence in Manipur, the planned atrocities against Christians,
and the sort of physical and economic violence against Muslims in Nuh, Haryana,
Fr Cedric (Prakash of Ahmedabad) said there was hope and encouragement to be
taken from the recent Assembly elections in Karnataka. The strategic unity of
the people of all faiths, even political ideologies, to challenge communalism
had borne rich fruit.
“Bangalore Archbishop Dr Peter Machado, the
ecclesiastical adviser to the AICU, also called for the empowerment of the
laity in the country so it could play a role in democratic social and political
processes more effectively, and guard the interests of the people.”
It added: “In key resolutions adopted during the AGM,
AICU reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with victims of various incidents,
notably in Manipur, Nuh, and Christian communities across the country. This
solidarity extends beyond words to concrete actions, including the provision of
financial assistance, legal aid, and counselling services to support those
affected by adversity.”
The AICU has demanded the restoration of central
scholarships for minorities — such as the Maulana Azad National Fellowship —
and the appointment of a Christian member to the National Commission for
Minorities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first leaders to congratulate
Maldives’ newly elected President Mohammed Muizzu on Sunday. But considering
the inclination of the former leader of the opposition towards China,
speculation is rife that all the diplomatic and political clout that India
exercised in Maldives will now be a thing of the past.
“There is no doubt that Muizzu has leanings towards
China, but we doubt if he would be able to, or rather be interested in,
completely sidelining his association with India. That said, China and its
presence in Maldives will be in the ascendant,” said a political analyst from
Male, wishing anonymity. Muizzu won the Maldivian presidential poll defeating
incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, securing 54 per cent votes against the
latter’s 46 per cent.
Solih, who belongs to Maldivian Democratic Party, had
replaced former President Abdulla Yameen (2013-18). Solih was considered
India-friendly during his five-year tenure and was a close aide of India. On
the contrary, when Muizzu’s Progressive Party of Maldives was last in power, it
had secured heavy Chinese loans for the island nation. His government was also
accused of cracking down on dissent. While the five years of Solih’s presidency
were peaceful and prosperous, the same optimism cannot be expressed for Muizzu,
due to his affinity with Yameen.
Yameen, who is currently serving an 11-year jail
sentence on charges of corruption, was not just pro-China, but also vehemently
anti-India. The ‘India out’ campaigns kept surfacing at his instigation even
when he was in jail. Yameen was Muizzu’s mentor and with Muizzu now in power,
Yameen’s release is understandably imminent.
India has invested heavily in Maldives. It has been
involved in developing its infrastructure projects and, under its Neighbourhood
First policy, extended grants in aid and loans. Nevertheless, there have been
targeted hate attacks at repeated intervals — whether it was on migrant workers
from India or on last year’s Yoga Day celebrations.
India established diplomatic relations with Maldives
after its independence from British rule in 1996. In fact, India was one of the
first countries to recognise Maldives after independence and develop close
strategic and military ties.
“We hope that things remain normal between India and
Maldives. Though we must admit that once Yameen is out, there is bound to be a
hardening of stance against India,” said a source, adding that many who voted
for Muizzu were keen to see India’s military presence reduce in the country.
Uncertain ties
Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was replaced by Mohamed
Muizzi, was considered India-friendly during his five-year tenure. On the
contrary, when Muizzu’s party was last in power, it had secured heavy Chinese
loans for the Maldives. While the five years of Solih’s presidency were

Anti-Islam, Pro-Putin firebrand Robert Fico's party
wins Slovak elections

The anti-Islam, pro-Russia SMER-SSD Party of former
Prime Minister Robert Fico has on Sunday won Slovakia’s parliamentary election,
with almost all votes counted across the central European country.
The election was expected to be a close run-off
between the left-wing populist SMER-SSD and the centrist Progressive Slovensko
(PS). But with 99.2 percent of polling stations counted, SMER-SSD was on 23 percent,
with PS a distant second in 17 percent.
It is now highly likely that the 59-year-old former
member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia will become Slovakia's prime
minister for a third time.
Much of the media focus on the election campaign has
been on Fico’s opposition to European support for Ukraine and sanctions on
Russia, with the left-wing populist known for his pro-Putin allegiances.
However, Fico’s party winning by such a large margin
is seen by many as being another shot in the arm for the increasingly
anti-immigration and Islamophobic political landscape of Europe. It might be of
particular concern to Slovakia’s Muslim community.
During his last tenure as prime minister, Fico gained
a reputation for his extreme anti-Muslim and anti-migrant rhetoric, often
defying EU protocols on migration.
In 2016, during the so-called refugee crisis in
Europe, Fico declared that "Islam has no place Slovakia", adding that
"the problem is that [Muslims] want to change the face of the
country".
No mosques in Slovakia
In the same year, Fico publicly blamed the IS attacks
in Paris in 2016 and racist conspiracy theories about Syrian refugees attacking
German women on Muslim immigration to Europe and, more generally, on the
presence of Islam in European countries, with him and his party supporting the
'Islamisation' conspiracy theory.
He also said that his government was "monitoring
every Muslim in our territory".
During his last campaign for prime minister, Fico,
against the backdrop of a banner reading "CharinmeSlovensko"
("We're protecting Slovakia") behind him, said "thousands of
terrorists and Islamic State fighters are entering Europe with migrants".
"I can tell you we will never bring one single
Muslim to Slovakia," he announced.
On this, Fico kept his word, defying the EU's quota
system and only bringing 180 Christian Syrian refugees to the country.
More worryingly, when Fico was last in power, he
passed legislation introduced by his far-right coalition partners in the Slovak
National Party (SNS) that barred Islam from gaining state recognition.
The law allowed religious denominations with at least
50,000 members to gain state rights – Slovakia has a Muslim population of only
5,000.
For this reason, Slovakia is the only member state of
the EU without a mosque.
Fico's coalition partner, Andrej Danko said at the
time: "Islamisation starts with a kebab and it's already under way in
Bratislava, let's realise what we will face in five to 10 years."
Muslims are not the only minority Fico has targeted,
with Romani and LGBT people also being scapegoated by his previous SMER-SSD
governments. He has also been accused of
legitimising the harassment of critical journalists.

India complains to UK over confrontation at Sikh
temple

LONDON: India’s High Commission in London said on
Saturday it has reported a “disgraceful incident” involving a top diplomat
being confronted by protesters at a Sikh temple in Glasgow to police and
Britain’s Foreign Office.
The incident comes as India’s relations with Sikh
communities overseas are under the spotlight due to New Delhi’s arrest and
alleged torture of a Sikh blogger from Scotland, and alleged involvement in the
murder of a Sikh leader in Canada.
India’s diplomatic mission in London said that Vikram
Doraiswami, its High Commissioner to the UK, had been invited to the Sikh
temple, or gurdwara, in Scotland’s biggest city on Friday to discuss community
and consular issues.
But it said he was confronted on arrival by three
people described as “non-local extremist elements” who tried to “violently
force open” the vehicle he was travelling in.

The diplomat left the scene without going ahead with
the visit, the high commission claimed.
The allegation prompted junior UK foreign minister
Anne-Marie Trevelyan to say she was “concerned”.
“The safety and security of foreign diplomats is of
utmost importance and our places of worship in the UK must be open to all,” she
said on X, formerly Twitter.

However, a Scottish Sikh group said on social media
that “misinformation & fake news has been spread regarding a peaceful &
legal protest objecting to @VDoraiswami holding an official visit at
#GlasgowGurdwara”.
The Sikhs in Scotland national advocacy charity added
that the diplomat had “remained safely in his car at all times” and that “he
chose to drive away from the Gurdwara and did not stay to answer Sikh
community’s legitimate concerns”.
Scotland Police confirmed it had been alerted to
reports of a disturbance at the gurdwara at lunchtime on Friday, according to
UK media.
“There were no reports of any injuries and enquiries
are ongoing to establish the full circumstances,” a spokesperson said in a
reported statement.
The UK is home to some 500,000 Sikhs, including a sizeable
community in Scotland. They have campaigned in recent years over the case of
Jagtar Singh Johal, a Sikh blogger from Scotland.
Jagtar Singh has been held in detention in India for
five years, accused of being part of a terror plot against right-wing Hindu
leaders and has been charged with a murder conspiracy.
Relations between India and Canada have already
plunged since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently disclosed that there was
evidence of Indian intelligence agency’s link to the killing of Hardeep Singh
Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who advocated a separate Sikh state carved out of
India, in June.
India expelled Canadian diplomat in retaliation after
Trudeau’s bombshell announcement last week and issued a travel warning and
halted visa issuance to Canadians.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar a few
days ago claimed that there was a “climate of violence” and an “atmosphere of
intimidation” against Indian diplomats in Canada, where the presence of Sikh
separatist groups has frustrated New Delhi. Canada is home to about 770,000
Sikhs, the highest population outside the northern Indian state of Punjab.

Terrorists refuse to release captives after N17
million was paid as ransom

Residents of Janbako, an agrarian community in Maradun
Local Government, Zamfara State have resorted to prayers after terrorists
refused to release members of the community after collecting a ransom of N17
million and a motorcycle.
The captives have spent more than 40 days in
captivity.
The residents of the community said they expected the victims
to be released after the ransom was paid but the terrorists are still holding
on to the captives
The terrorists attacked the community on 15 August and
abducted 21 residents of the community mostly women and children.
Three days later, the terrorists reached out to the
community and demanded N50 million as ransom. But residents said they couldn’t
raise such a huge amount.
“They abducted my two wives, Rayyanatu and Farisha, my
daughter, Halimatu and my niece, Sha’awa when they came. In all, they took
about 21 people in our town, most of them being women and children,”
SaiduSamaila, a resident of Janbako said.
He said he has not heard from any of his immediate
family members since the abduction.
Another resident who only gave his name as Kasimu said
the community met and decided to discuss the ransom demanded by the terrorists.
“When they said N50 million, we knew it would be
impossible because we couldn’t gather such an amount. We’re nothing but farmers
and local traders and farming is near impossible now. Even trading, how many
people now go to local markets? It’s impossible because the bandits are all
over the place abducting and killing people. So, we met and decided to ask them
for a reduction,” Mr Kasimu, whose sister was among those abducted, said.
After a series of negotiations, the terrorists agreed
to accept N17 million and a brand-new Boxer motorcycle as ransom.
Residents of the community gathered N10.5 million.
They reached out to people from the community living or working in other places
in the country and taxed themselves.
“When we took the money, they said we should try to
get the balance before they kill our people,” a community leader, who asked not
to be named for security reasons, told PREMIUM TIMES over the phone. “We had to
source for the remaining N5.5 million to make it N17 million but before we took
the money, they called and asked that we buy a brand new motorcycle as part of
the ransom. It was a new request but we had no option.”
The community leader said seven days after the balance
and the motorcycle were given to the terrorists, they are yet to release the
captives.
“We’ve resorted to prayers now because we don’t know
why they’re yet to release our families for us,” Mr Samaila said.
PREMIUM TIMES reached out to the police spokesperson
in the state, Yazeed Abubakar, to seek more details on the development but
received no response.
Residents of rural communities in Zamfara and other
north – western states are forced to routinely cough up huge amounts of money
to pay terrorists either as ransom or protection levies. Despite the economic
situation in the country, residents in the vulnerable communities are left with
no option but to gather the money through whatever means.
PREMIUM TIMES has reported some of the attacks
launched on Janbako, Faru, Gora and other neighbouring communities in the last
few months. In June this year, 21 vigilante members all from Janbako were
killed by terrorists while the vigilante members were on a rescue mission to
help residents of Sikida, a neighbouring community that came under attack.
North- west Nigeria has been witnessing a surge in
banditry activities. Terror gangs especially in Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto,
Kaduna and Kebbi kill and or abduct residents from communities and on major and
local highways and demand ransom sometimes in millions of naira before
releasing the abductees.

Libya's eastern authorities postpone planned Derna
reconstruction conference

Libya's eastern authority said it has postponed a
reconstruction conference for the flood-hit city of Derna to give more time for
the submission of effective studies and projects.
“It has been decided to put off the conference until
Wednesday and Thursday, the first to second of November, which will be held in
the cities of Derna and Benghazi," said Saqr al-Jibani, head of the
preparatory committee of the International Conference for the reconstruction of
Derna.
Originally planned 10 October, the conference was met
with international scepticism.
The divided country's eastern administration last
month invited the "international community" to attend the conference
in Derna.
On Sunday, it said more time was needed to properly
prepare plans for the reconstruction project.
“The committee has responded to the valid demands of
municipalities and local councils of the affected cities and regions, as well
as those of a number of international companies, which are willing and are
technically capable of participating in the conference,” said al-Jibani.
“This is in order to offer time for the submission of
effective studies and projects that will contribute to the reconstruction
process and achieve sustainable human and professional development."
Nearly 4,000 people died in the coastal city when two
dams collapsed during a heavy storm in mid-September, washing entire
neighbourhoods into the sea.
Libya was plunged into more than a decade of chaos and
conflict following the toppling of longtime dictator, Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
It is now divided between an internationally
recognised Tripoli-based administration in the west, and one in the
disaster-stricken east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.
Despite a wave of nationwide solidarity since the
flood, there has been no show of support for the conference from interim Prime
Minister AbdulhamidDbeibah’s government of national unity.
A Libya specialist at the Royal United Services
Institute, JalelHarchaoui, said donors were unlikely to give money to the
disaster-hit east, as the government there is not officially recognised.
The United States on Friday called on Libyans to set
aside their political differences and agree on a framework to channel aid to
the eastern towns impacted by the storm.
On Wednesday, the eastern authorities announced the
creation of a fund for the reconstruction of Derna and other areas affected by
the flooding, but gave no indication as to how this would be financed.

Thousands celebrate departure of French ambassador
from Niger

Thousands of Nigerians gathered near France’s military
base in Niamey to celebrate the departure of Paris’ ambassador earlier this
week, about a month after the military junta ordered him to leave.
But anti-French activists say the battle is not yet
over.
"This victory is not, if you like, a total
victory for this revolution, it's only the beginning. We call on the entire
population of Niger to mobilise as one until the last French soldier leaves
Niger, said demonstrator Mohamed Abdou-Latif.
Another activist, Ibrahim Boubacar, agreed.
"We’re overjoyed. But just because the ambassador
has gone doesn't mean that we're going to stay at home and say 'It's over,
we've won'. No, we are going to continue the fight," he said.
They are now waiting for France to withdraw its around
1,500 soldiers from Niger, which Paris says will take place before the end of
the year, in what will be a blow to its influence in the country.
"We are more or less satisfied with the timetable
for the withdrawal,” said fellow demonstrator, IssakaTondiTassiou.
“Knowing a bit about logistics, it's equipment that
has been deployed over 12 years, installation and so on. So dismantling it,
packing it up, and taking it away takes time.''
France has kept soldiers in Niger as part of an
anti-jihadist deployment in the region.
Meanwhile, the new regime says it is planning its
future relations with Paris, the form of which will be dictated by the people
of Niger.

for his bridge-building efforts and his strong voice against religious

US Secretary of State’s ‘history lesson’ gets
corrected by X users

Users of the social media network X (formerly Twitter)
have fact-checked a statement made by United States Secretary of State Antony
Blinken in which he said Vladimir Putin’s government “manipulates” the details
of massacres in Kiev in 1941 “to provide cover for Russia’s abuses in Ukraine.”
“Eighty-two years ago, Nazis murdered 34,000 Jews at
BabynYar,” Blinken wrote in a Friday post. “Soviets buried this history, which
today Putin’s government manipulates to provide cover for Russia’s abuses in
Ukraine.”
He added that “the US is committed to justice for
Holocaust survivors and accountability for atrocities.”
Blinken was referring to massacres in the BabynYar
ravine in present-day Kiev, perpetrated by Nazi Germany’s forces and their
local Ukrainian collaborators in late September and October 1941 during its
campaign against the Soviet Union. The first such massacre, which took place on
September 29 and 30, saw some 33,771 Jews killed.
Other victims of mass killings at the site include
Soviet prisoners of war (POWs), communists and Romani. It is estimated that
between 100,000 and 150,000 people were murdered at BabynYar during the German
occupation.
The atrocities, which were considered to be extreme
even by Nazi Germany’s standards, have been a source of debate in Ukraine over
reports of local collaborators being involved. Estimates by historians put at
one million the number of Jews killed in what is now Ukraine during the Second
World War.
As such, X users were quick to point out what they
suggested was Blinken’s rather short-sighted recollection of historical events.
“Soviet prisoners of war were among the people
massacred at BabynYar,” reads a contextual fact-box added by X users to
Blinken’s post. “The Soviets liberated BabynYar and Kiev in 1943. The Soviets
held a trial in 1946 in Kiev for 15 German policemen involved in the BabynYar
massacres.”
In response to Blinken’s statement, Russia’s First
Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, wrote on X: “I was
brought up in the USSR and we all knew about BabynYar. Nazi crimes were never
‘buried’ in my country, unlike yours. Writing such a sacrilegious post is
beyond any basic notions of decency.”
On Friday’s 82nd anniversary of the first BabynYar
massacre, the Ukrainian foreign ministry issued a statement saying that the
event should serve as a reminder to oppose “aggressive-chauvinistic ideologies,
in particular, Russian aggression against Ukraine.”

Donald Trump's business empire in peril as civil fraud
trial opens in New York

OCT 2 — Donald Trump and his family business are set
to stand trial in New York today in a civil fraud case that could deal a major
blow to the former US president’s real estate empire.
Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican
presidential nomination, is accused by Democratic New York Attorney General
Letitia James of inflating the value of his assets by billions of dollars to
secure better loan and insurance terms.
Trump plans to attend the first week of trial in state
court in Manhattan, according to a court filing in an unrelated case.
The trial comes a week after the judge presiding over
the case found Trump liable for fraud and will largely concern the penalties he
must face.
James is seeking at least US$250 million in fines, a
permanent ban against Trump and his sons Donald Jr and Eric from running
businesses in New York and a five-year restriction on commercial real estate
activities by Trump and his flagship Trump Organization.
Trump has said the case is part of a political
witchhunt.
Justice Arthur Engoron ruled last week that James had
proven her fraud case against Trump, his two adult sons and 10 of his
companies.
Engoron described in scathing terms how they made up
valuations. That included Trump calculating the value of his apartment in Trump
Tower as if it were three times its actual size.
"A discrepancy of this order of magnitude, by a
real estate developer sizing up his own living space of decades, can only be
considered fraud," he said.
Engoroncanceled business certificates for companies

The ruling covers only a handful of the roughly 500
entities in Trump's portfolio but includes some of his most valuable
properties. The specifics of how that order will be implemented have not been
decided, but the loss of those prized assets would be a major blow to Trump's
finances. If Engoron tacks on fines and business restrictions, that damage
would compound.
The trial is scheduled to run through early December.
More than 150 people including Trump are listed as potential witnesses, but
much of the trial will likely be a battle of experts opining on financial
documents.
James alleges Trump reaped hundreds of millions of
dollars in ill-gotten savings by "grossly" inflating the values of
his assets to get better deals from lenders and insurers.
That included listing his Mar-a-Lago club and
residence in Florida as being worth up to US$739 million even though deed
restrictions capped it at US$28 million, James said.
The case is one of several legal headaches Trump faces
as he campaigns to retake the White House in the 2024 election. None have
dented his commanding lead over rivals for the Republican nomination, though
they have been a financial drain.
Trump, the first sitting or former US president to be
criminally charged, is under indictment in four separate cases.
He has been charged in Florida over his handling of
classified documents upon leaving office, in Washington D.C. in his efforts to
undo his loss in the 2020 presidential election, in Georgia over moves to
reverse the election results in that state and in New York in hush money
payments he made to a porn star.
Trump has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty in

Islamabad have categorically stated that
there is no place for terrorists and their facilitators in Pakistan.
They expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of
precious lives in the recent bomb blasts.
The two ministers reaffirmed the government's firm
commitment to providing every possible support to the Election Commission of
Pakistan in fulfilling the constitutional responsibility of conducting
elections in the country.
In his remarks, the Information Minister said
maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the government. He said it
is our duty to assist the Election Commission in ensuring the conduct of free,
fair and impartial elections in the country.

Cipher case: Open court trial may harm Pakistan’s ties
with other states, FIA tell IHC

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on
Monday urged the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to hold an in-camera hearing of
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s bail plea in the cipher
case, fearing that an open court trial could harm the country’s ties with other
states.
FIA Special Prosecutor Shah Khawar made the appeal
after the court met following a short break.
Before the break, the IHC decided to hear the FIA’s
plea for an in-camera hearing along with the PTI chief’s petition for bail.
“Let's hear the application for in-camera proceedings
along with the main application for bail,” observed the court when it took up
the petition.
Once the court met after the break, the IHC CJ
inquired if the bail plea could be heard in-camera.
However, Khawar told the court that under the Official
Secrets Act, a trial cannot be made public, adding that they would move a
similar plea in the trial court.
“There are some statements and information that cannot
be made public,” said the lawyer. He added that they also have to place
statements related to other countries before the court.
“Sharing such information in an open court can affect
Pakistan's diplomatic ties with other countries,” said Khawar.
At this, IHC CJ Farooq observed that when the court
would write its verdict on the bail plea it would be made public so why should
the hearing be held in-camera?
How is a cipher handled once it is received by FO
Then, the court asked about the SOPs for handling a
cipher.
To the court’s query, Additional Attorney General
Munawar Iqbal Dogal briefed the bench on the matter.
While adding to this, Khawar stated that a cipher is
sent by a Pakistan embassy in a coded form and it is de-coded at the Foreign
Office.
Then a copy is sent each to the president, prime
minister, army chief and director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence,
he explained, adding that after it is seen by all the relevant offices, the
copies are sent back to the Foreign Office where these are discarded.
“Only the real cipher stays at the Foreign Office,”
added Khawar.
“Are all the codes [for a cipher] universal,” asked
IHC CJ.
At this, AAG Dogal said every country has a different
coded message.
“How does the cipher come?” asked IHC CJ Farooq.
Khawar informed the court that it comes in a coded
form via email or fax.
PTI chief's lawyer opposes in-camera hearing
Meanwhile, the PTI chief’s lawyer, Salman Safdar,
opposed the FIA’s plea for an in-camera hearing. In his arguments, he contended
that they had stated in the last hearing that they were okay with barring
irrelevant people from the court.
“During my nine years [as a justice] I have not heard
any case in-camera. I must have done one or two in-camera hearings on missing
persons case,” remarked the IHC CJ.
Moving on, Safdar further argued that the FIA never
moved such a plea when they argued the case in the trial court.
He also added that if there was any sensitive
information in the case then it could be discussed in the chamber or it could
be given in writing by the prosecution.
The PTI chief’s lawyer further added that were
expecting live coverage of the case.
At this point, the IHC CJ informed the lawyer that a
committee is tasked to prepare guidelines for the live streaming of court
proceedings.
“There is concern that sensitive information will be
made public if the case is heard in an open court,” AAG Dogal intervened.
The IHC then reserved the verdict and CJ Farooq stated
that they would announce a new date for the hearing.
Last week, the IHC had ruled that the hearing on the
PTI chief’s bail plea in the cipher case will take place in an open court.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq had stated this in a
two-page written order in response to the prosecution's verbal request for
in-camera proceedings.
The FIA had initially sought closed-door hearings,
citing the presence of "privileged" and "sensitive"
documents and information.
The court had, consequently, instructed the FIA
prosecutors to submit a separate petition for in-camera proceedings during the
upcoming hearing.
Following this, the FIA, a day earlier, moved a formal
petition for an in-camera hearing.
IHC to announce verdict on Imran Khan bail pleas today
Meanwhile, the IHC is also expected to announce its
verdict on the PTI Chairman’s bail plea in nine other cases.
A two-member bench, comprising IHC CJ Aamer Farooq and
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, will announce the reserved verdict.
Sessions and an anti-terrorism courts had dismissed
the PTI chief’s plea for seeking bail till a final decision was made in the
nine cases. The PTI chief then challenged the decision in the high court.
Khan had contended in the pleas that the authorities
should be barred from arresting him in these nine cases till a final decision
is not given. He also stated that the courts should be instructed to decide the
nine cases on merit.
According to the application, three of these cases are
related to the May 9 incidents and three are on the protest in Islamabad, while
one case is the Toshakhana case, other of violation of Section 144 and another
of an attempt to murder.

Balochistan govt to crush terrorist groups with full
force: Achakzai

QUETTA/BEIJING: Two days after a deadly suicide attack
in Mastung that claimed over 50 lives, Balochistan caretaker Information
Minister Jan Achakzai on Sunday said the provincial government would crush the
terrorist groups with full force.
“Enough is enough. We will not wait for terrorists to
come and attack. Now, we will go after them,” the caretaker minister said while
addressing a press conference in Quetta.
Responding to a question, Jan Achakzai said that an
investigation into the Mastung blast was under way and he could not share
details of it. However, he vowed the government and law enforcement agencies
would crush the terrorist groups with full force.
He said the forensic department of the Counter
Terrorism Department (CTD) was carrying out an investigation into the Mastung
bombing.
The minister claimed the suicide bomber was between 15
to 17 years of age, adding that teams have recovered some organs of the suicide
bomber which, according to him, have been sent to Lahore for forensic.
Meanwhile, Achakzai also announced that the families
of the martyrs would be provided financial assistance. Detailing the financial
package, he said every martyr’s family would be given Rs1.5 million, while
Rs0.5 million would be distributed among the critically injured and Rs0.2 million
among nominally injured by the provincial government.
He further said the Balochistan government was also in
talks with the Centre to improve the package. The minister further said that
security protocols were being revisited in the wake of the incident and any
loopholes would be plugged to ensure no security lapse occurs.
At least 60 people, including a cop died and 100
others sustained injuries, when a suicide bomber targeted an Eid Miladun Nabi
(PBUH) procession in the remote district of Mastung, Balochistan.
Meanwhile, another suicide blast ripped through a
mosque in KP’s Hangu, leaving five dead, including a policeman and 12 injured.
On the other hand, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a
message of condolence to President Arif Alvi over a series of bomb attacks that
rocked the country.
in his message, Xi said that he was shocked to learn
of the attacks which caused heavy casualties. On behalf of the Chinese
government and people, Xi mourned deeply for the victims and conveyed sincere
sympathies to the bereaved families and those injured.
The Chinese president emphasised that China resolutely
opposes all forms of terrorism and will continue to firmly support Pakistan’s
endeavors to maintain national stability and security.
On the same day, Chinese Premier Li Qiang also
extended condolences to caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar.

Police ramp up Adiala jail security for Imran

RAWALPINDI: In light of recommendations by the Special
Branch and relevant departments following a survey of Adiala Jail where former
prime minister Imran Khan is incarcerated, the police have ramped up security
in the vicinity of the jail by deploying elite commandos and setting up
additional security pickets to ensure foolproof measures.
After the survey, the officials concerned recommended
an increase in security and search operations targeting shops located in front
of the jail and residential areas in the surroundings of the central prison.
Sources said police pickets were established on Adiala
Road and on both sides of the jail premises to ensure foolproof security,
whereas two contingents of Elite Force would also patrol the area around the
jail in two shifts. The officials also recommended keeping a record of CNICs
and other details of the visitors.
The SSP operations and the chief traffic officer
accompanied by other senior police officials visited the jail and held a
meeting with the superintendent to take stock of security measures.
During the meeting, it was decided that the jail
administration would ensure the security of the premises, while the police
would be responsible for the security outside the jail.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan was shifted to Central Jail
Adiala from District Jail Attock following the orders of the Islamabad High
Court on September 26 amid tight security.
The high court had made this decision while hearing a
plea moved by the PTI chief seeking transfer from Attock Jail to Adiala.
The former prime minister was shifted to Attock jail
on August 5, 2023, after a court sentenced him to three years in prison in the
Toshakhana case for concealing details of gifts he received as the prime
minister of Pakistan.
After his sentence in the Toshakhana case was
suspended by the high court, the government detained the ex-premier in the
cipher case.
The cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document
which reportedly went missing from Imran’s possession. The PTI alleged that it
contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran Khan from power.
In the same case, a special court had sent the PTI chairman
on judicial remand till Oct 10. It may be noted that an IHC bench is also
hearing a plea moved by the PTI chairman seeking post-arrest bail in the cipher
case.
Last month, the court had rejected a request by the
Federal Investigation Agency seeking in-camera proceedings of the bail plea
filed by Mr Khan. Proceedings against former foreign minister Shah Mahmood
Qureshi in the same case are also underway.

Pakistanis among 40 nations facing backlash for
reporting rights abuses

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is among the 40 countries across
the world where over 220 individuals and 25 organisations faced threats and
retaliation from the state and non-state actors for cooperating with the United
Nations on human rights, reveals a new report of the UN Secretary-General.
The report titled, ‘Cooperation with the United Nations,
its representatives and mechanisms in the field of human rights’ covering the
period from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023, was recently presented at the Human
Rights Council (HRC) session in Geneva. The session will continue till Oct 6.
The report says human rights defenders and other civil
society activists are increasingly under surveillance and continued to face
legal proceedings, travel bans and threats and they are given prison sentences
for cooperating with UN’s human mechanisms.
The UN secretary-general said that the organisation
has a collective responsibility to prevent and address intimidation and
reprisals, guided by the principle of “do no harm” and a victim- and
survivor-oriented approach.
Civil society activists face legal proceedings, jail
sentence, travel bans and threats for cooperating with UN’s rights mechanism,
says report
“Considerable progress has been made in shedding light
on and addressing the issue, including through initiatives on civic space under
‘Call to Action for Human Rights’, the UN chief said.
“The UN is committed to strengthening its efforts to
prevent reprisals, including through clear zero-tolerance messages and by
awareness-raising among staff, member states and civil society interlocutors.
We will further strengthen our response to reprisal cases and ensure
appropriate systems are in place to identify, document and report on incidents,
including those in the annual reports. We will reinforce the dissemination of
information on what reprisals are and how to report incidents, in particular
for UN bodies where reprisals are repeatedly reported,” he added.
“A global context of shrinking civic space is making
it increasingly difficult to properly document, report and respond to cases of
reprisals, which means that the number is likely much higher,” said Ilze Brands
Kehris, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, in her presentation to
the HRC on Thursday.
“Despite ongoing efforts, regrettably, the number of
reported acts of intimidation and reprisal by state and non-state actors
remains high and their severity is very concerning,” she said.
“The global trends documented this year are also
similar to those identified in previous reports, but with new emerging
tendencies,” the UN official said.
Among the growing trends noted in the report is the
increase in the number of people either choosing not to cooperate with the UN
due to concerns for their safety, or only doing so if their identities remain
anonymous.
Victims and witnesses in two-thirds of the countries
listed in the report requested anonymous reporting of reprisals, compared with
one-third in the last year’s report.
Most of the people who reported facing reprisals for
their cooperation with the Security Council and its peace operations, as well
as with the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues did so on the condition of
anonymity.
Algeria, Afghanistan, Andorra, Bahrain, Bangladesh,
Belarus, Burundi, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, France, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq,
Israel, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Maldives, Mali, Mexico, Myanmar, Nicaragua, the
Philippines, Qatar, the Russian Federation, South Sudan, United Republic of
Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Venezuela (Bolivarian
Republic of), Yemen, and the State of Palestine are also on the list alongside
Pakistan.

Fazlur Rehman voices concern over winter polls in KP,
Balochistan

SAHIWAL: While calling PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s
return to power “out of question”, JUI-F emir Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday
raised questions over holding elections in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
at a time when they remain gripped by intense winter.
“It is out of the question that Imran, who is a
product of a fake and bogus election, will return to power again,” Mr Rehman
said.
He was talking to the media after attending a training
convention as a chief guest at Jamia Uloom-i-Sharia.
According to the JUI-F emir, neither he nor anyone
else from his party “wished for Imran Khan’s disqualification”.
Claims Imran’s return to power ‘out of question’
“He has been disqualified because of his performance;
his disqualification is a direct result of his own rule, governance and
policies.”
He added that many in PTI are booked in several cases
and will have to clear their names from cases pending in courts if they wished
to contest the elections.
Regarding the polls, the JUI-F chief said it was not
possible to hold general elections in KP and Balochistan in January.
“In January, weather would be harsh in Chitral,
Khuzdar, and other parts of KP and Balochistan,” he said, adding that despite
concerns, his party won’t demand any delay in polls.
The JUI-F is ready to contest elections whenever the
Election Commission announces a date, he said.
Answering a question about the prolonged rule of the
caretaker government, the JUI-F emir said he was “completely against the
philosophy of the caretaker government”.
“I don’t recognise the caretaker government because in
[this] government, ‘caretakers’ are someone else,” he said in an apparent
reference to the establishment.
Mr Rehman said Pakistan was lacking peace and
financial and constitutional stability.
Ineffective PDM
Regarding the future of PDM, Mr Rehman said it has
become “ineffective as a political platform” almost two years after its
formation.
Earlier, leaders of PML-N and JUI-F — the two major
parties in the coalition which remained in power for almost 16 months — had
hinted that the alliance was never formed to contest elections jointly.
On the question of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s
return, the JUI-F emir said his party was “solely responsible” for making a
strategy for his welcome and return.
“I talked to many senior leaders in PML-N and they all
say one thing — Nawaz Sharif is coming back. We must all welcome him.”
While criticising PTI, Mr Rehman blamed the party and
his chief for the economic crisis.
He claimed that when former prime minister Imran Khan
was removed through a vote of no confidence, total foreign exchange reserves
were $2 billion, but the PDM government took them to $11bn and repaid $6bn
debt.
According to the State Bank data, when Mr Khan was
ousted on April 8, 2022, the total reserves were $17bn and $13.3bn on Aug 11,
2023, three days after the PDM government dissolved the National Assembly.
“It is Imran Khan who is responsible for the economic,
judicial and governance crises,” Mr Rehman said.
He warned that Pakistan would face international
isolation as Arab countries would not extend any financial support if Mr Khan’s
return is being talked about. Commenting on recent terrorist attacks in Mastung
and Hangu, he said a wrong message was going to the world at the wrong time.

Karachi law enforcers in tight spot after murder of
third cleric

KARACHI: The targeted killings of three religious
scholars in the metropolis in a short span of one month put a question mark
over the performance of police, Rangers and many other intelligence agencies,
as they appear to have made no headway in the investigations despite their
initial findings leading to the involvement of a foreign hostile intelligence
agency, it emerged on Sunday.
Two of the three scholars — Qari Khurram Shahzad and
Maulana Ziaur Rehman — were targeted in North Nazimabad and Gulistan-i-Jauhar
on Sept 6 and Sept 12, respectively.
On Saturday evening, unidentified gunmen shot dead
another religious figure, Mufti Qaiser Farooq, who became the third scholar
fallen victim to a targeted attack in Sohrab Goth.
After the first two attacks, the Counter-Terrorism
Department (CTD) on Sept 22 linked the two murders and a few others that had
taken place within a couple of months in Karachi to an ‘enemy country’.
In this regard, a senior official of the Karachi
police was more vocal than the CTD when he openly blamed the Indian
intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), for the murder of
Maulana Ziaur Rehman.
Speaking to Dawn on Sunday, CTD’s Raja Umer Khattab
said that the three scholars belonged to the Ahle Hadith, Deoband and Barelvi
schools of thought.
However, any proven link in the three murders had not
been established yet, the officer said.
“We have some leads and we are working on them to unearth
the killers and their possible motive,” said the CTD officer.
However, a senior police official, requesting
anonymity, said that investigations were under way and their findings could not
be made public due to the sensitive nature of the cases.
Earlier, a section of the Indian media had claimed
that Maulana Ziaur Rehman was linked with banned Jamaatud Dawa (JuD).
However, CTD official Khattab said: “As far as murder
of Maulana Ziaur Rehman is concerned, evidence collected so far showed
involvement of street criminals in his murder.”
About Maulana Zia’s murder, Karachi police chief
Khadim Hussan Rind had said in a statement: “During the preliminary
investigation, evidence of the involvement of the intelligence agency of our
neighbouring country, RAW, has been found in the incident.”
Latest victim was JUI-F supporter
Mufti Qaiser Farooq, who was gunned down by armed
pillion riders outside the Gulshan-i-Umar seminary-mosque near Edhi Centre in
Sohrab Goth late on Saturday night, was a member of the Jamiat
Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).
Central SSP Faisal Abdullah Chachar told Dawn that
Samanabad police had registered a murder case on the complaint of the victim’s
brother against unidentified suspects.
He said it appeared to be a targeted killing. The
assailants fired around eight-nine bullets and one of the bullets hit Qaiser
Farooq, which proved fatal, he said.
SSP Chachar said the victim was on his way to his
native town in Dera Ismail Khan when he was targeted.
Qari Usman, a central leader of the JUI-F, told Dawn
that Mufti Farooq was their supporter and a naib imam of a mosque near Port
Qasim.
He lamented that the targeted killing of religious
scholars had reared its ugly head, urging the authorities to take its notice.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia sign MoU in field of
information technology

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) in the field of information technology.
The MoU was signed during a meeting between Caretaker
Federal Minister Umar Saif and Engineer Abdullah Amir Al-Sawaha in Riyadh.
Pakistani Ambassador Ahmed Farooq and leading IT
experts were also present on the occasion.
It was agreed that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia will work
together in the field of information technology and promote the private sector.
The agreement also included a bilateral agreement on
digital economy.
Interim IT minister Dr. Umar Saif is in Saudi Arabia
with a delegation of IT companies to explore business opportunities in the
Kingdom.

The Foreign Office, in a statement on Sunday, said we

It said Pakistan resolutely stands with Türkiye in its
fight against the scourge of terrorism.
The Foreign Office expressed the confidence that with
their characteristic grit and determination, the Turkish nation will defeat
this menace and emerge ever stronger.

Pakistani Police detain 800 Afghan refugees in
Islamabad’s outskirts

of Islamabad, Pakistani police detained 800 Afghan refugees. Out of these, 400
were released because they had valid permits, while 375 face deportation due to
a lack of proper documentation.
Pakistani media, citing the Counter Terrorism
Department, reported that 400 individuals with valid residency permits were
released, while 375 others are set to be deported due to a lack of
documentation.
Samaa TV, a Pakistani news agency, mentioned that this
operation occurred in BaharaKahu, Tarlai, Meherabadiyan, Golra, and Kalani
Shams.
Before this incident, Pakistani media had disclosed
the cabinet’s approval of a plan to deport over a million undocumented Afghan
refugees. This development raised significant apprehensions within Pakistan’s
Afghan refugee community as they grappled with the looming uncertainty of their
future in the host country.
After the fall of the Afghan government to the Taliban
in August 2021, a substantial surge in Afghan migration commenced, primarily
towards neighbouring countries such as Pakistan and Iran.
Several factors fueled this migration, encompassing
fears of Taliban reprisals against government officials, human rights
advocates, and political dissidents.
Additionally, the ban on girls’ education and a stark
rise in unemployment and poverty significantly prompted Afghans to seek refuge
in neighbouring countries.
These multifaceted challenges compelled many to leave
their homeland in search of
safety and better opportunities.

after Turkey attack

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday
that "terrorists" will never achieve their aims, hours after a blast
near the parliament in Ankara injured two police officers.
The powerful explosion outside the interior ministry,
which was followed by large flames, was heard several kilometres from the site
of the attack.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a terror
group by Turkey and its Western allies that has been waging a deadly insurgency
against Ankara for four decades, claimed responsibility for the blast.
The targeted district is home to several other
ministries and the Turkish parliament, which reopened as planned in the
afternoon with an address from Erdogan.
"The villains who threaten the peace and security
of citizens have not achieved their objectives and will never achieve
them," Erdogan told the parliament.
The interior ministry said two attackers arrived in a
commercial vehicle around 9:30 am (0630 GMT) in front of "the entrance
gate of the General Directorate of Security of our Ministry of the Interior,
and carried out a bomb attack."
"One of the terrorists blew himself up. The other
was killed by a bullet to the head before he had a chance to blow himself
up," Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in a press statement outside the
ministry.
"Two of our police officers were lightly
injured" in the exchange of fire, but their lives were not in danger, he
added.
In a statement to the ANF news agency, which is close
to the Kurdish movement, the PKK said that "a sacrificial action was
carried out against the Turkish Interior Ministry".
The Ankara police headquarters said on the social
media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that it was carrying out
"controlled explosions" of "suspicious packages" to prevent
other explosions.
The Ankara prosecutor's office said it was opening an
investigation and banned access to the area. Local media was asked to stop
broadcasting images from the scene of the attack.
Erdogan later opened the parliamentary session by
slamming his country's long wait for accession to the EU, stating that Turkey
"no longer expects anything from the European Union, which has kept us
waiting at its door for 40 years".
"We have kept all the promises we have made to
the EU but they have kept almost none of theirs," he said, adding that he
would not "tolerate any new demands or conditions" for his country to
join the bloc.
This session of Turkey's parliament must also validate
Sweden's entry into the NATO alliance.
Hungary and Turkey in July lifted their vetoes against
Sweden's entry into the Atlantic alliance, but have been slow to ratify its
membership.
Erdogan indicated in July that ratification by the
Turkish parliament would not take place before October, but it is expected to
be approved during this parliamentary year.
For months, Erdogan has been putting pressure on
Sweden to take action against Quran desecrations that have strained relations
between the two countries.
Sweden's prime minister Ulf Kristersson was quick to
pledge in a statement that his country "once again confirms its commitment
to long-term cooperation with Turkey in the fight against terrorism".
Numerous foreign leaders also voiced support for
Turkey after the attack, with messages of support coming from Germany, the
United Kingdom and the United States embassy in Ankara.
The Turkish capital has been the scene of several
attacks, particularly during the years 2015 and 2016 -- many claimed by the PKK
or the Islamic State group.
The PKK has waged an insurgency against the Turkish
state since 1984 in a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
In October 2015 an attack in front of a central
station in Ankara claimed by the Islamic State group killed 109 people.
The most recent bomb attack in Turkey was in a
shopping street in Istanbul in November 2022, where six were killed and 81 were
injured.

Second Israeli minister visits Saudi Arabia in a week
amid normalisation talks

Israel's Minister for Communications ShlomoKarhi has
touched down in Riyadh on Sunday to attend the World Postal Union conference,
in the second visit by an Israeli minister to Saudi Arabia within a week.
Also in attendance were Likud Chairman of the Knesset
Economic Committee David Bitan and other unnamed senior Israeli officials.
Representatives from the Israeli Postal Authority
participated via Zoom.
Karhi’s visit to Riyadh follows last week's visit of
Israeli Minister of Tourism Haim Katz to the kingdom for a UN World Tourism
Organisation event.
Katz’s visit marked the first-ever public trip by an
Israeli cabinet minister to Saudi Arabia.
The Israeli governmental visits to Riyadh come at a
time when momentum is gathering on the two countries signing a historic
normalisation agreement.
In an interview with Fox News that aired on September
20, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) said such an agreement was
getting "closer".
"Every day we get closer," the prince, who
is the kingdom's de facto ruler, said.
The only stumbling blocks seem to be the kingdom
seeking more progress on ensuring the rights of the Palestinians, while Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hard-right government continues to pursue the
expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
However, US sources have indicated that the Saudis
would be willing to go ahead with Israeli normalisation even if Tel Aviv offers
no major concession to Palestinian demands.
According to reports, if the US ties up a major
security with the kingdom, including giving it the official status of a major
non-NATO ally, Riyadh would be willing
to abandon its conditions about Palestine.

Two injured in blast, gunfire near Turkey parliament

ANKARA:A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device
in the heart of the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Sunday, while a second
assailant was killed in a shootout with police, hours before Turkiye Parliament
was set to reopen after its three-month summer recess with an address by
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said two police
officers were slightly injured during the attack near an entrance to his
ministry. Yerlikaya said on social media platform X that the assailants had
arrived at the scene in a light commercial vehicle.
“Our heroic police officers, through their intuition,

police headquarters said that it was carrying out “controlled explosions” of
“suspicious packages” to prevent other explosions, according to an announcement

challenge.
Separately, in a press release shared by Prime
Minister’s Office Media Wing, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar
extended sympathies of the Pakistani nation to the people of brotherly country
Turkiye. He also prayed for the early recovery of the injured.
Also, on his X handle, Kakar said: “We stand in complete
solidarity with our Turkish brothers and sisters in the fight against the
scourge of terrorism. I have no doubt that under the dynamic leadership of my
brother (President Erdogan), the resolute Turkish nation will emerge ever
stronger from this challenge.”
National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf said in a
statement: “Pakistan’s parliament and citizens stand in solidarity with
Turkiye’s parliament and its people during this difficult time.” he added that
the attack outside Turkiye’s parliament was essentially an assault on freedom
and democracy.
He added that the attack outside Turkiye’s parliament
was a heinous attempt to sabotage peace in the region and Pakistan’s parliament
strongly condemns it. Turkiye’s parliament and its people had shown resilience
against these extremist elements, he continued.
Ashraf pointed out that the people of Pakistan and
security forces had been at the forefront of the fight against terrorism,
therefore, he stressed that the importance of adopting a collective approach to
eradicate terrorism.

Iraq wedding fire caused by ‘gross negligence,’
government investigation says

BAGHDAD: A fire that swept through a crowded wedding
hall in a northern Iraqi town killing more than 100 people was blamed on “gross
negligence” and lack of safety measures, the results of a government
investigation into the disaster said.
The investigation results, announced at a news
conference on Sunday by interior minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, said the
owner of the hall and three other staff members had allowed 900 people into the
venue when it was designed for a maximum of 400.
“The fire was accidental and unintentional and
occurred due to gross negligence,” the investigation findings said.
“Using flammable decoration helped the fire to spread
quickly and transformed the hall to a fireball,” Shammari said.
The blaze trapped people inside the wedding hall and
rescue teams struggled to reach them because exit doors were few and small,
Shammari said.
At least 150 people were injured in the fire, which
was in the Christian town of Hamdaniya — also known as Qaraqosh.
The interior minister put the death toll at 107 and
said the investigation panel had proposed that the government should provide
financial support to families of the dead and injured.
The investigation also made recommendations that legal
action should be taken against local officials.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani visited victims
of the blaze at two local hospitals on Thursday and pledged to hold those
responsible to account.

Blaze rips through police headquarters in Egypt

CAIRO: Dozens have been injured after a huge fire
ripped through a police station in the Egyptian city of Ismailia early Monday.
The blaze, which started at around 3 a.m (GMT), was
brought under control by about 5.20 a.m. (GMT) according to witnesses and local
media.
The health ministry said at least 38 people were
injured.
Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, a spokesperson for the health
ministry, said 12 of the injured were treated at the site, while 26 others were
taken to hospital, many were suffering from smoke inhalation.
Seven of the injured were treated and discharged.
Unverified videos posted on social media showed the
city’s security directorate engulfed in flames.
Two witnesses said fire engines who earlier arrived at
the scene appeared to be struggling to contain the blaze. It was not
immediately clear whether there were any casualties.
Local civil defense sources said parts of the building
had collapsed under the fire. The cause for the blaze was not immediately
known.
Deadly fires are a common hazard in Egypt, where many
buildings are dilapidated and poorly maintained.
In August 2022, a fire caused by a short circuit
killed 41 worshippers in a Cairo church, prompting calls to improve the
country’s infrastructure and the response time of the fire brigade.
In March 2021, at least 20 people died in a fire at a
textile factory in the capital, while in 2020, two hospital fires killed
fourteen people.

ANKARA, Turkiye: Turkish warplanes carried out
airstrikes on suspected Kurdish militant targets in northern Iraq on Sunday
following a suicide attack on a government building in the Turkish capital,
Turkiye’s defense ministry announced.
Some 20 targets of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or
PKK, were “destroyed” in the latest aerial operation, including caves, shelters
and depots, the ministry said, adding that a large number of PKK operatives
were “neutralized” in the strikes.
Earlier on Sunday, a suicide bomber detonated an
explosive device near an entrance of the Interior Ministry, wounding two police
officers. A second assailant was killed in a shootout with police.
The PKK, which maintains bases in northern Iraq,
claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, according to a news agency
close to the rebel group. Turkiye’s Interior Ministry also identified one of
the assailants as a member of the outlawed group. It said efforts were still
underway to identify the second attacker.
The attack happened hours before Turkiye’s Parliament

President Raeisi: Liberation of al-Quds ‘most
important issue’ in Muslim world

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has censured the normalization
agreements by certain Arab countries with the Israeli regime, underlining that
the liberation of the occupied al-Quds is the "most important issue’ in the Muslim world.
Raeisi made the remark in an address to the opening
ceremony of the 37th International Islamic Unity Conference in the Iranian
capital of Tehran on Sunday.
“Becoming united does not only mean unity of religions
or geography, it rather means to express cohesion and solidarity to safeguard
the interests of the Islamic Ummah,” he said.
The Iranian president described Muslims’ unity with
adherence to the holy Qur’an and Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) as the secret of their
victory throughout history.
Resorting to foreigners and fulfilling their wishes is
a “regressive” step, he added.
“The liberation of al-Quds and Palestine is the most
important indicator of the unity of the Islamic Ummah,” Raeisi said.
He further stressed that attempts to normalize
relations with the Zionist regime are seen as a “retrograde step” for any
government as it is what the foreigners want.
“The way to confront the enemy is not through
compromise and surrender but through resistance and resilience,” he noted.
“The option of surrender and compromise are by no
means on the table; resistance and resilience against the enemy has paid off
and will force the enemy to retreat.”
He praised the international conference on Islamic
Unity in Tehran as an “anti-Zionism and anti-hegemony” event, saying that
“Today’s strategy of unity can fortify the Islamic Ummah against the enemy, and
cohesion [works] against its hybrid warfare.”
Raeisi also called for the further consolidation of
the Islamic Ummah’s unity in the face of threats posed by Takfiri terror
outfits.
“Takfiri groups' horrific crimes perpetrated in
mosques and religious centers, explosions in Pakistan and Afghanistan and
massacre of people as well as crimes by the US and the Zionist regime’s
henchmen in various Islamic countries, entail promoting unity among the Islamic
Ummah to confront the Takfiri current,” he added.
He called on Muslim scholars and thinkers to prepare
themselves for assuming an important role in the new world order by promoting
cohesion, unity, and proximity of faiths.
“Muslims and the Islamic world must establish
themselves in the new order, disrupt the current unjust order, and create a
just order in the world,” he said, stressing that the Islamic Ummah will play a
key role in the emerging world order.
Raeisi said sacrilegious acts such as the desecration
of the holy Qur’an and the Prophet, heinous crimes by Takfiri terrorist groups,
and normalization deals with the Israeli occupying regime as well as media
campaigns spearheaded by the enemies are meant to deter the Islamic Ummah.

about the future by propagating the idea that only everything it wants and
wishes will happen, but the Islamic Ummah has foiled such plots,” the Iranian

Turkish Military strikes Kurdish hideouts after Ankara

On Monday, the
Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that it had destroyed 20 Kurdish
insurgent hideouts in an airstrike operation in northern Iraq.
This operation was carried out in response to a
suicide attack near the Ministry of Interior in Ankara, which the Kurdistan
Workers’ Party (PKK) claimed responsibility for.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party claimed responsibility
for this attack, in which two attackers were killed. The Kurdistan Workers’
Party is a separatist Kurdish party engaged in armed conflict against the
Turkish government.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has been conducting
military activities against the Turkish government to establish an independent
Kurdish state since 1984.
This semi-militant group is recognized as a terrorist
organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
The Turkish military stated that it had targeted the
“terrorist dens” in the

595 Israeli Settlers Storm Al-Aqsa Mosque During

595 Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque in
Jerusalem amidst enhanced Israeli occupation forces IOF presence, marking the
Hebrew holiday known as “Hebrew Throne Day” in the early hours of Monday
morning, October 2, 2023.
According to sources in Jerusalem, 595 Israeli settlers
invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque in a series of successive groups beginning in the
morning. They gained access through Al-Maghariba Gate, guarded by IOF.
Some of these settlers performed Talmudic rituals
within the mosque’s courtyards. There was also a significant presence of
settlers in the area near the Chain Gate.

Sources indicated that some Israeli occupation forces

Video clips emerged showing a group of settlers
parading through the streets of the Old City, carrying “plant sacrifices.” This
ritual is one of the practices advocated by purported Temple Mount groups
within Al-Aqsa Mosque.
According to the Islamic Waqf Authority, 859 Israeli
settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday, amidst heightened restrictions
imposed by Israeli occupation forces on the entry of worshippers, especially
young people and those who regularly attend the mosque.
Attacks Against Palestinian Worshipers
Israeli occupation forces attacked Palestinian
worshipers, including women, at Al-Aqsa’s gates to pave the way for settlers’
incursions.
In addition, several Palestinian worshipers and
activists have been banned from entering the Old City of Jerusalem over the
past few days, an attempt by Israeli occupation authorities to impose full
control over the mosque.
The Hebrew Throne Day holiday extends until October
7th. During this period, Temple Mount groups have vowed to break previous
records for the number of intruders. They have even offered free transportation
from various regions and snacks at Al-Maghariba
Gate.
Incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound typically
occur during Jewish holidays, taking place in two sessions: morning and
afternoon, from Sunday to Thursday.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque faces daily incursions and
violations by settlers, backed by Israeli occupation forces, in an attempt to
assert full control over the mosque and divide it both temporally and
spatially.

Afghanistan Embassy closes operation in India due to
lack of diplomatic support

The Afghanistan
Embassy in India has suspended its political representation in New Delhi. In an
official statement released on Saturday, the embassy cited a lack of support
from the host country and an inability to meet Afghanistan’s expectations for
serving its interests as reasons for reducing personnel and resources.
Although regrettable, The embassy mentioned that this
decision was made after carefully considering the historical relationship and
long-standing cooperation between Afghanistan and India.
Furthermore, the embassy identified the lack of
essential support from the host government as the primary factor leading to
Afghanistan’s cessation of activities in India.
The Afghanistan Embassy in India acknowledged its
shortcomings in fulfilling the expectations and requirements to safeguard
Afghanistan’s interests. It attributed these shortcomings to the absence of
diplomatic support in India and a functioning legal government in Kabul.
On the other hand, the report says it was planned to
hand over the embassy to the host country due to multiple challenges. However,
due to ongoing efforts, this closure has been delayed. We remain hopeful that
we can continue to operate the embassy, said Nisar Ahmad Sherzia.
According to the embassy, consular services will still
be provided to Afghan citizens in certain Indian cities, and following Article
45 of the Vienna Convention, all embassy property and facilities will be handed
over to the host country.
Meanwhile, a source within the Afghan Embassy in Delhi
had previously refuted reports of the embassy’s closure. It had emphasized its
commitment to continuing operations and supporting Afghan citizens in India.
The Afghan Embassy in India was under the administration
of diplomats from the previous Afghanistan government after the takeover by the
Taliban administration.

Afghan Politicians Abroad Want to Talk with Islamic

Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Nabi Omari said that
some Afghan political leaders want to talk with the Islamic Emirate but “there
is no issue” which needs to be discussed.
Speaking at a ceremony to introduce the Paktia
governor, he said that the Islamic Emirate has established its government and
will not debate democracy.
“What will the agenda of the meeting be? The egregious
democracy, which did not cause any result over the past 20 years -- if this
would be the agenda of the negotiations,
the Mujahideen and Taliban have made sacrifices to
deny it and they were ready to do so for another 100 years,” Omari said.
The tribal elders in Paktia meanwhile stressed the
need for an end to conflicts in the country and called on the political leaders
abroad to return. They also urged the Islamic Emirate to respect the rights of
the citizens.
“They can freely come here and live in trust here and
continue their life under the Islamic government,” said Mohammad Anwar Sediqqi,
a tribal elder in Paktia.
"We call on all of the Afghans, who are our
brothers, to return and we welcome them. The Islamic Emirate should pay
attention to them and take care of them,” said Haji Mamor, a tribal elder in
Paktia.
After the Islamic Emirate came to power, many Afghan
politicians left the country. They stressed the need for intra-Afghan
negotiations.

Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has called the attack on the
Kaaj School on its first anniversary “horrific” and emphasized its commitment
to standing with the victims and individuals affected by this incident and
other violent incidents in Afghanistan.
UNAMA, on Saturday night, wrote on its social media
platform X, stating that in last year’s attack on the Kaaj School, 54 people
were killed and 114 others, mostly Hazara girls, were injured.
The United Nations representation stressed that
decades of conflict and countless attacks have inflicted “irreparable” damage
and left families without answers, justice, or accountability.
Kaaj Educational Center in western Kabul was targeted
in a suicide attack in October last year, resulting in the deaths and injuries
of dozens of students, primarily girls, who were preparing for their university
entrance exams.
UNAMA also emphasizes its support for the people of
Afghanistan to live their daily lives without fear and for the perpetrators of
violence to be held accountable.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan
has stated that it stands alongside the victims and individuals affected by
this incident and other violent incidents in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the attack on the Kaj School has garnered
widespread international reactions and human rights activists, leading to

Afghan Embassy in India Says Operations Ceased on

The embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi in a statement
on Saturday announced that it is ceasing its operations, effective October 1,
2023.
“It is with profound sadness, regret, and
disappointment that the Embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi announces this
decision to cease its operations,” the statement said.
“This decision, while deeply regrettable, is made
after careful consideration, taking into account the historic ties and
long-standing partnership between Afghanistan and India.”
The embassy named the “key factors” affecting its
ability to continue its mission effectively as a “lack of support from the host
government, failure to meet expectations in serving Afghanistan’s Interests.”
Nisar Ahmad Shirzai, a political analyst, said that
the closure of the embassy is affecting the longstanding relations between Afghanistan
and India.
“To solve such problems, there is a need for the
formation of an inclusive government. The Taliban should accept the demands of
the international community, so the embassies are directly in contact with the
capital, and they don’t face problems in their operations,” he said.
The statement of the embassy requested the government
of India to facilitate the “smooth transition of the mission’s buildings and
assets to a legitimate government in Kabul in the future.”
Meanwhile, Afghan refugees in India voiced concerns,
saying that the closure of the embassy will boost the problems of the Afghan
refugees in India.
“For example; the issuing of visas, renewal of
passports, confirmation of the documents and existing problems with the police,
the embassies solves these problems. Closure of the embassy means that our
relations with them have ended,” said Feda, an Afghan national in India.
But the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, Zabiullah
Mujahid, said that the Foreign Ministry is following the issue.
“There are some problems in the embassy in India. The
Foreign Ministry has considered this issue and negotiations are underway until
the issue is solved and the embassy in coordination with the Foreign Ministry
will solve all the consulate issues,” he said.
The Islamic Emirate two months ago, appointed Qadir
Shah as its ambassador in New Delhi but he has yet to take the responsibility.

Higher Education Minister Encourages Youth to Pursue
Islamic Faith and Modern Sciences

Sheikh Neda Mohammad Nadeem, the Acting Minister of Higher Education, urged the
youth to balance their pursuit of modern sciences with a strong foundation in
Islamic faith.
This sentiment was expressed during a meeting with
local officials, tribal elders, scholars, professors, and students in Aibak
City, the capital of Samangan.
Mullah Dad KhodaKhadem, the deputy governor of
Samangan, assured that security is maintained in Samangan and that the people
support all programs of the Islamic Emirate.
He also encouraged students to understand the enemy’s
goals and to arm themselves with knowledge, practice, sincerity, and piety to
resist the influence of Western ideas.
Sheikh Nada Mohammad Nadeem paid tribute to the
students who lost their lives during the twenty years of occupation.
He stated that Afghanistan has passed a small test and
is now facing a larger one – providing security, implementing justice, and
enforcing Islamic Sharia.
He emphasized that strength comes from equipping
oneself with knowledge and deeds and making people aware of their
responsibilities.
This includes obedience to the Amir and maintaining
sincerity among themselves.
The Acting Minister highlighted that the Islamic
Emirate places special emphasis on students.
A budget of 250 million Afghanis has been allocated
for those pursuing master’s level studies inside or outside the country.
Additionally, 100 million Afghanis have been set aside
for equipping educational institution laboratories.

Refugees and Repatriation Ministry to Establish Camp
for Returnees in Nangarhar

This initiative comes in response to the increasing

Repatriation, and attended by representatives from relevant institutions.

Nine gravestones at Labuan Muslim Cemetery found

LABUAN: Nine gravestones at the Jagus Muslim Cemetery
in Saguking near here were found uprooted.
As such, the cemetery committee urged the police to
conduct a thorough investigation into the case to locate the culprits.
The discovery was first made by a passer-by who was on
his way home from work Saturday night (Sept 30), before sharing it on his
Facebook the following day.
An Nur Mosque committee member, Munir Kamari, who also
oversees the maintenance of the Jagus Muslim Cemetery expressed his dismay at
the vandalism, stating that preliminary findings suggest that the gravestones
were uprooted on purpose and not because of natural causes.
“The perpetrator may have been insane to do such
things” he told Bernama when met at the cemetery. Labuan Police Chief
Superintendent MohdHamizi Halim said that his personnel had visited the
cemetery and gathered information from Munir.
“We have asked the cemetery committee to file a formal
police report, so that a thorough investigation can be initiated,” he said. –

Underage teens among 11 friends charged with drug
distribution

JOHOR BARU: Eleven friends, including two underage
teens, have been charged at the Magistrates’ Court here with distributing three
types of drugs amounting to more than 19.4kg.
The accused are Yek Zhu Jie, 19, Tan Chee Seng, 21,
How JiaLerk, 23, Kenny Loo Yee Han, 24, OoiZhi Wei, 27, and Chong Chew Nam, 32,
and all were brought to the court on Monday (Oct 2).
They were charged with three counts of drug
distribution.
Additionally Eva Chua Min, 19, Phang Jing Yi, 22, and
Goh Yoong Cheng, 30 and two 17-year-old youths also face the same charges.
All 11 of them allegedly distributed 18,881g of
methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA), 558g of ketamine and 52g of nimetazepam
at a house in Jalan Bukit Skudai 6, Taman Bukit Skudai here around 2am on Sept
23.
The charges were read to them in Mandarin by the court
interpreter.
They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the
Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same
Act.
If found guilty, the accused could face a death
sentence or lifetime imprisonment, and if not given a death sentence he or she
could be whipped at least 15 times.
No plea was recorded.
Magistrate A. Shaarmini fixed Nov 2, for mention and
the submission of chemical reports.
No bail was granted to the accused as specific
provision in the Act does not allow consideration of such an application.
The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor
ShamiraMohdLuthfi Ismail.
One of the accused, How, was represented by lawyer
Chew Pong Him while Chua and Chong were represented by Datin Freda Sabapathy
and Muhammad Mohd Nasir respectively.

KUALA LUMPUR – Bursa Malaysia remained in negative
territory mid-morning due to continuously selling energy, property and
utilities counters.
At 11 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI)
slipped 2.42 points to 1,421.75 from last Friday’s closing of 1,424.17. The
index opened 0.10 of-a-point easier at 1,424.07.
The market breadth was negative, with decliners
leading gainers from 425 to 256, while 370 counters were unchanged, 1,244
untraded and eight suspended.
Turnover stood at 1.17 billion units worth RM565.34
million.
Among the heavyweights, Tenaga Nasional fell 12 sen to
RM9.87, Petronas Gas lost 20 sen to RM16.64, IHH Healthcare shed nine sen to
RM5.76, Maxis slid six sen to RM3.98 and Petronas Chemicals fell five sen to
RM7.14.
Of the actives, Evergreen Max Cash eased half-a-sen to
42 sen, UCRest unchanged at 17.5 sen, while KNM and Netx Holdings gained
half-a-sen to 13 sen and 15 sen, respectively, and Mercury Securities added one

Saudi Arabia faces budget deficit after expectations
of surplus

Saudi Arabia is expecting to post a budget deficit up
to 2026 despite earlier predictions of a surplus as the world’s biggest crude
exporter is undergoing reforms to diversify its economy beyond oil revenues.
In a preliminary budget statement released on
Saturday, the Saudi Finance Ministry projected budget deficits of 1.9, 1.6, and
2.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the coming three years.
It said the “limited budget deficits” would continue
in the medium term because of expansionary spending policies and conservative
revenue estimates.
The ministry also said total revenues this fiscal
year, which runs from January to December, were expected to be 1.18 trillion
riyals ($314 billion), with expenditure estimated at 1.26 trillion riyals. This
is while an earlier projection had put the numbers at 1.130 and 1.114 trillion
riyals, respectively.
It further pared its growth forecast for this year
from 3.1 to 0.03 percent.
Inflation and supply chain problems have hampered
growth, but “the government is working to expand government spending that has a
transformative effect, while maintaining fiscal sustainability in the medium
and long term,” the statement read.
Last December, Saudi Arabia announced it had recorded
its first annual budget surplus in nearly a decade on the back of oil price
hikes.
This year, however, the country’s oil revenue has
fallen by 17 percent as prices have dipped and Riyadh has cut production “to
stabilize the oil market.”
Saudi Arabia is to cut another 0.5 million bpd of its
crude oil output in July to reinforce oil prices.
Meanwhile, the kingdom is pursuing its ambitious and
very expensive Vision 2030 project meant to shift the economy away from fossil
fuels.
In an assessment report last month, the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) projected Saudi Arabia to swing to a fiscal deficit of 1.2
percent of GDP in 2023, from a surplus of 2.5 percent in the previous year.

Saudi Arabia condemns Koran burning in Malmö

RIYADH, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) — Saudi Arabia on Sunday
strongly condemned the burning of a copy of the Islamic holy book of the Koran
in the Swedish city of Malmö, a move the kingdom said was carried out with “the
knowledge of the local authorities.”
Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry “reiterated the
kingdom’s rejection of such blatant acts” and said such a move had stirred the
emotions of millions of Muslims worldwide, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The ministry called on the Swedish authorities to deal
with the desecration of the Koran in time and to stop giving permission to
those who plan to take similar measures.
Salwan Momika, an individual of Iraqi origin, tore
pages of the Koran and burned it in Malmö on Saturday. Swedish police arrested
some individuals and turned away some others who tried to stop the move,
Swedish media reported.
In recent months, copies of the Koran have been
repeatedly desecrated by anti-Islamic individuals or groups in countries
including Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands, sparking outrage and criticism
in Muslim-majority countries around the world.

Yemen carrier suspends international flights from
Sanaa

SANAA: Yemen’s national carrier has suspended
international flights from the country’s capital, officials have said, citing a
dispute with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels over access to funds.
Yemenia operates near-daily commercial flights to the
Jordanian capital Amman — its only direct international destination from Sanaa’s
Houthi-controlled airport which reopened last year following a six-year hiatus.
On Saturday, an official with the Houthi transport
ministry told the rebel’s Saba news agency that “Yemenia flights have been
suspended from Sanaa airport”.
In a statement, the airline blamed the rebels for the
move, accusing them of restricting access to company accounts in Sanaa banks
since March — a charge the Houthis have denied. Yemenia said it was barred from
accessing more than $80 million in deposits, causing “severe damage to the
company’s activity”.
It said its six flights per week from Sanaa to Amman
would stop after the end of September “in light of the company not being
allowed to withdraw from its accounts”. The airline will continue, however, to
operate flights from Aden — the current seat of the internationally-recognised
government.

Yemeni soldier killed, others hurt in Houthi drone
attack in Saada

AL-MUKALLA: A Yemeni government soldier was killed and
several others were injured in a Houthi drone attack in the northern province
of Saada on Saturday, the second such incident in a week.
Hadi Tarshan, governor of Saada, told Arab News that
the Houthis launched a barrage of explosive-laden drones at a military parade
held by Yemeni government forces in Baqoum district to commemorate the 61st
anniversary of the Sept. 26 Revolution.
The army shot down several of the drones but one hit
its target, killing a soldier and wounding others.
“We, the residents of Saada, have known the Houthis
since 2004, and we know that they will not honor any deal or truce unless they
are weak. What happened today demonstrates this,” Tarshan said.
The incident comes a week after four Bahraini soldiers
were killed in a Houthi drone attack on a group of Arab coalition soldiers near
the Saudi Arabia-Yemen border.
Despite a significant reduction in hostilities since a
UN-brokered ceasefire went into effect in April last year, the Houthis have
continued to launch ground attacks and fired drones and missiles at
government-controlled areas and military locations in Taiz, Marib, Dhale, Lahi
and other provinces.
Yemeni political and military observers said the
increase in hostilities was intended to send a message to Houthi supporters who
are under pressure to pay public employees and Saudi Arabia.
Military analyst Brig. Gen. Mohammed Al-Kumaim told
Arab News that by targeting government troops and Arab coalition forces, the
Houthis sought to reassure their supporters of their strength and exert
pressure on the Kingdom to accept their peace demands.
“The intent was to send a message to the inside
(Yemen) to boost their followers’ morale and divert attention away from what
was happening in Sanaa,” he said.
“In addition, they are sending a message to Saudi
Arabia to take their requests seriously.”
But even if the Yemeni government or the Kingdom complied
with those demands, the Houthis would devise new ones and continue their
military operations, he added.
“This is the Houthis we know: they are covenant
breakers, deceivers and traitors who will exploit any opportunity to attack
others, even during a truce. When their demands are satisfied, they increase
them without making any concessions.”
Last week, the Houthis abducted more than 1,000
Yemenis in the cities of Sanaa and Ibb who had gathered on the street to
commemorate the anniversary of the revolution, a move that the Houthis viewed
as a challenge to their control and ban on public gatherings.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Houthis prevented four
Yemeni activists from the rights organization Mwatana from boarding a plane
bound for Amman, Jordan.
The organization said the Houthis interrogated the
activists, annulled their exit visas and told them to leave the airport,
without providing any justification for their actions.
“It is another infringement of Yemeni men’s and
women’s right to freedom of movement committed by the Houthi organization,”
Rasheed Al-Faqih, the vice president of Mwatana and one of the four activists
affected, said on X.
“With its protocols and decrees, the organization has
undermined the Republic of Yemen’s effective constitution and all national laws
and legislation.”

the attempted terrorist attack on the General Directorate of Security of
Türkiye's Interior Ministry, which led to the injury of a number of Turkish
security personnel.
In a statement issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry,
it confirmed the Kingdom's rejection of all forms of violence, terrorism and
extremism.
The Ministry has renewed Saudi Arabia's support for
all efforts aimed at eliminating terrorism and extremism in all its forms and
drying up its sources of funding.
Saudi Arabia also expressed its sincere wishes for a
speedy recovery for those injured, as well as its wishes for security and
safety for Türkiye and its people.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerli Kaya announced
that two terrorists carried out a bomb attack on Sunday morning in the capital,
Ankara, in front of the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of
the Ministry of Interior.
