A family of four stole part of the limelight during and after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s road show in Vadodara on Monday, held to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor.

The parents, brother and twin sister of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, one of the faces of the media briefings on the military operation, stood among the crowd on the roadside and tossed rose petals as the Prime Minister’s motorcade passed by.

Col Qureshi’s father, Taj Mohammad, who too has served in the army, said Modi recognised them and greeted them.

“We greeted the Prime Minister with flowers. Colonel Qureshi is not only our daughter but the daughter of the country,” mother Halima Qureshi said.

Modi and his party, accused in the past of making political use of military success, have been milking Operation Sindoor. Party leaders have attributed the operation’s success to the Prime Minister, who has claimed that “hot sindoor” (vermilion) and not blood courses through his veins.

On Monday, the effort seemed to acquire a coat of sheen with the presence at the road show of the Vadodara-based family of Colonel Qureshi, who has emerged as a symbol of the military operation to many Indians.

Modi, who is on a two-day visit to his home state, was driven along a 1km stretch from the airport to the air force station in Vadodara.

Cheering crowds lined both sides of the street, waving the Tricolour, chanting “Bharat Mata ki jai” and throwing rose petals as Modi hung out of his SUV and waved.

Colonel Qureshi’s parents, twin sister Shyna Sunsara and brother Sanjay Qureshi can be seen among the crowd in a video shared by Modi on YouTube.

The Mumbai-based Sunsara, who was born 15 minutes after her sister, told reporters she was unable to “express in words” the feeling of greeting the Prime Minister.

“It was a very different moment. I cannot express it in words,” said the former beauty queen whose accomplishments straddle the words of modelling, fashion designing, environmentalism, economics and rifle shooting.

“It felt as if he was giving a message to the world that we are standing with you all, and no one needs to be scared.”

One interviewer brought up the elephant in the room: Wasn’t the family disappointed by a BJP minister’s reference to Colonel Quereshi as a “sister” of the Pahalgam terrorists in an allusion to her religion?

Brother Sanjay sidestepped the question. “It’s all political. The matter is being taken care of by the courts. We don’t want to comment on it,” he said.

Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah has been excoriated by the Supreme Court for his tasteless remark about Colonel Qureshi, and Madhya Pradesh High Court has got an FIR registered against him. The BJP has, however, not punished Shah.

Sanjay thanked Modi for his sister’s selection as an Operation Sindoor spokesperson.

“A woman taking revenge for the suffering of other women (who lost male relatives in the Pahalgam massacre) — what can be better than this?” he said.

Azerbaijan International Conference “Islamophobia In Focus”: Cooperation Is Essential For An Effective Fight Against Islamophobia

26.05.2025

“Discussing ways to combat Islamophobia is both a crucial and timely issue. Hostility towards Muslims is not a new phenomenon; however, in recent years, the frequency and intensity of such incidents have significantly increased,” said Mohamed Hedi Shili, Director of the Legal Affairs and International Standards Department at ICESCO, during a plenary session titled “Hate Against Muslims in Politics: Legal Frameworks and Advocacy Strategies,” held as part of the international conference “Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas.”

He noted that Islamophobia manifests not only at the individual level but also systematically across media, culture, education, and employment sectors. Research indicates that 39% of Muslims have reported experiencing general discrimination. Thirty-five percent faced discrimination in the workplace, while an equal percentage encountered difficulties in securing housing. Even more concerning is that 45% of hijab-wearing women reported discrimination during job recruitment. In the education sector, 35% of Muslims reported identity-based discrimination.

“These facts demonstrate that the current measures are insufficient. In terms of security, threats and persecution against Muslims are becoming more overt and dangerous. This endangers not only individuals but also the cohesion of society and broader social stability. Under these circumstances, our only viable path forward is joint action and international cooperation. To effectively combat Islamophobia, states, international organizations, civil society institutions, and the media must work together. We must show solidarity to uphold the universal values that ensure peace and mutual respect,” Mohamed Hedi Shili emphasized.

Rushdie 'pleased' with attacker's maximum sentence

27 May 2025

Sir Salman lost the sight in one eye and sustained other serious injuries in the attack

---------

Author Sir Salman Rushdie has said he is "pleased" the man who tried to kill him in a knife attack in 2022 has received the maximum possible prison sentence.

Hadi Matar, 27, was jailed for 25 years earlier this month for attempted murder after repeatedly stabbing Sir Salman on a New York lecture stage.

"I was pleased that he got the maximum available, and I hope he uses it to reflect upon his deeds," Sir Salman told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

The attack left the award-winning writer blind in one eye, with damage to his liver and a paralysed hand caused by nerve damage to his arm.

Last year, Sir Salman published a book titled Knife reflcting on the attack, which he has described as "my way of fighting back".

It includes an imagined conversation with Matar. "I thought if I was to really meet him, to ask him questions, I wouldn't get very much out of him," Sir Salman told Radio 4.

"I doubt that he would open his heart to me. And so I thought, well, I could open it by myself. I'd probably do it better than a real conversation would."

The fictional conversation was brought to life by BBC film-maker Alan Yentob in an artificial intelligence animation created for a documentary last year.

The results were "very startling", Sir Salman said on Monday. "I have to say it certainly made a point."

The author was speaking on Radio 4 to pay tribute to Yentob, the BBC's former creative director, who died on Saturday.

"Apart from everything that everybody's been saying about him - that he was an unbelievable champion of the arts and so on - he also had a real gift for friendship," he said. "He was a very strong ally in bad times."

Sir Salman added: "He was a great programme maker, and I hope that's how he will be primarily remembered."

Yentob leaves a "colossal" legacy, he said. "He's one of the giants of British media in the last generation, and I think he will be remembered as a maker of great programmes, as an enabler of great programmes."

The pair's personal and professional relationship extended to Yentob famously enlisting Sir Salman to take part in a spoof arm wrestle for a scene in BBC mockumentary W1A.

"People keep asking me who won," Sir Salman said. "And of course nobody won because it was complete fraud."

In November, the author will publish a short story collection, The Eleventh Hour, his first work of fiction to be written since the stabbing.

The attack came 35 years after Sir Salman's controversial novel The Satanic Verses, which had long made him the target of death threats for its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad.

RIYADH: A joint Saudi-French archeological mission to excavate ancient sites on Farasan Island, in the Jazan region, has been concluded by the Heritage Commission.

The initiative, in collaboration with Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University, featured a team of experts from the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

It aimed to reveal settlement phases and chronological sequences at the excavation sites — Qusar, Ghurrayn, and Wadi Shami, which date from the first to third centuries — as well as study various burial grounds.

The work is part of a scientific project highlighting the historical and strategic importance of the Farasan archipelago, particularly its key role in maritime trade across the Red Sea through various historical periods.

It included male and female students from national universities, as well as participants from Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University.

Previous excavations under the same project, which took place from 2011 to 2024, have yielded significant findings dating back to the Bronze Age and the periods of Southern Arabian states.

Discoveries have included watchtowers and industrial sites believed to be remnants of a camp dating back to the second century B.C.

The findings underscore the rich cultural exchange that took place on Farasan Island, highlighting its pivotal role in connecting Southern Arabian civilizations with those of the Mediterranean. Prehistoric shell mounds and human settlements further emphasize the islands’ historical significance.

Mr Abubakar, who lives in Gezawa Local Government Kano, is charged with culpable homicide, attempted murder, causing grievous hurt and mischief by fire.

Delivering judgment, Halhalatu Khuza’i-Zakariyya, held that out of the seven witnesses presented by the prosecution, only the testimonies of two witnesses proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The court admits the testimony of Pw4, Ibrahim Salisu. He earlier told the court that he did not see the defendant setting the mosque on fire but saw him running. I hereby admit this as circumstantial evidence.” he said.

Mr Khuza’i-Zakariyya also accepted the testimony of Pw7, Abdullahi Sa’idu, a police officer, for presenting the defendant’s confessional statement.

“The burns on the defendant’s hand also indicate he committed the offence. I hereby find the defendant guilty on all four counts,” he said.

He also ordered the defendant to pay a fine of N1,500 for causing grievous hurt and 50 strokes of cane for mischief by fire.

Supreme Court issues notice to Centre and states on petition challenging Waqf Act, 1995

May 27, 2025

The Supreme Court Tuesday issued notice to the Centre and states on a petition challenging the Waqf Act, 1995. A bench of Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justice A G Masih issued the notice on the plea by Delhi resident Nikhil Upadhyay, and tagged it with a similar petition by Advocate Hari Shankar Jain and another person.

Hearing writ petitions challenging the recent amendments made to the Waqf Act, the bench of Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justice Masih had earlier asked why the 1995 Act is being challenged now after so many years.

While Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for petitioner Hari Shankar Jain, tried to explain that the petitioners had challenged the 1995 Act before the SC much earlier, and were asked to approach the High Courts, the bench was not convinced.

On Tuesday, too, the bench asked Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay why it should take up petitions challenging the 1995 Act now. Upadhyay pointed out that the bench of former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan — which had heard the Waqf (Amendment) 2025 matters before the CJI Gavai-led bench took over following former CJI Khanna’s retirement — already agreed to hear the challenge to the 1995 Act separately and allowed those who had challenged the 2025 amendments to file their response to it.

Upadhyay also referred to the April 17, 2025, order of the CJI Khanna-led bench, which said, “the writ petitions challenging the 1995 Waqf Act and the amendments made therein in 2013, including W.P. (C) No. 353/2025 “Hari Shankar Jain and Anr. v. Union of India and Ors.” and W.P. (C) Diary No. 19103/2025 titled “Parul Khera v. Union of India and ors.”, shall be separately shown in the cause list.

The April 17 order added, “As a special case, liberty is granted to the petitioners, who have filed writ petitions challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, to file their response to the said writ petitions.”

Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati said Tuesday the court has not allowed a hearing on the challenge to the 1995 Act along with the petitions challenging the 2025 Amendment. Bhati, however, added there is no objection if Upadhyay’s petition is tagged with the other petition by Jain challenging the 1995 Act.

CM Omar Abdullah to hold cabinet meetings in Pahalgam, Gulmarg to boost Kashmir's Tourism

27 May 2025

Fayaz Wani

SRINAGAR: The tourism sector in Kashmir has been severely impacted following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 25 tourists and a local ponywala were killed.

In an effort to restore confidence and revive tourism, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will chair a cabinet meeting today (Tuesday) at the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam in South Kashmir. The meeting aims to reassure visitors that Kashmir is safe and encourage travelers to return to the Valley.

Sources indicate that the CM and his cabinet colleagues will also meet with tourism stakeholders in Pahalgam to gather suggestions on how to revive tourism in the Valley in the aftermath of the April 22 attack.

Holding the cabinet meeting in Pahalgam is seen as a deliberate effort to send the message that there is no cause for concern and that Kashmir remains a safe destination for tourists.

This will be the first cabinet meeting of the Omar-led government during this tenure to be held outside the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu.

Following the April 22 militant attack on Pahalgam, in which 25 tourists and a local ponywala, who bravely attempted to disarm one of the attackers to protect tourists, were killed, as well as the subsequent four-day military skirmishes between India and Pakistan from May 7-10 during ‘Operation Sindoor,’ the tourism sector in the Valley has suffered substantial losses.

Immediately after the attack, tourists fled the area, and there was a widespread cancellation of bookings.

Hotels in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley, including Pahalgam in South Kashmir, Sonamarg in Central Kashmir, and Gulmarg in North Kashmir, are experiencing near-zero occupancy.

After today's cabinet meeting in Pahalgam, the CM will also chair an official meeting at the world-famous ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir on May 28 (Wednesday).

The Chief Minister, along with all cabinet ministers, the Advisor to the CM, the Chief Secretary, heads of departments, and other senior civil and police officials, will attend the meeting.

A tourism stakeholder mentioned that holding official meetings in these currently deserted locations will send a positive message, and may even inspire some tourists to consider traveling to the Valley.

Senior NC leader and MLA Tanvir Sadiq emphasised that the CM’s decision to hold official meetings in Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and other locations is part of the "governance at the doorstep" initiative.

“If you remember, when he was CM last time, he often held cabinet meetings in various locations outside the Civil Secretariat,” he said.

During a recent meeting of the NITI Aayog in New Delhi, Omar Abdullah proposed holding PSU conferences, meetings, incentive tours, and national-level events in Kashmir to instill confidence among tourists and encourage them to return to the picturesque Valley.

‘Terrorism isn’t proxy war, it is your war strategy’: In Gujarat, PM Modi slams Pakistan

May 27, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that when Pakistan realised that they were no match for the Indian armed forces, they started a proxy war against India via cross-border terrorism. “Terrorism isn’t proxy war, it is your war strategy, you are waging war on us,” he said.

Addressing an event to commemorate 20 years of the Gujarat Urban Growth Story in Gandhinagar, PM Modi said, “We can’t call this a proxy war, as those who were killed after May 6 were given state honours in Pakistan. Pakistani flags were draped over their coffins, and their military saluted them. This proves that these terrorist activities are not just a proxy war – this is a deliberate war strategy on their part. If they are engaging in war, then the response will be accordingly.”

While speaking about India’s partition in 1947, the Prime Minister said that the country was “torn into three pieces” and Pakistan captured a part of India with the help of terrorists. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel wanted army to take back Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, he said.

“Pakistan captured a part of Mother India with the help of terrorists, in the name of Mujahideen. If these Mujahideen had been killed on that day and Sardar Patel’s advice had been accepted, then this series (of terrorist incidents) that has been going on for the last 75 years would not have been seen,” Modi added.

He further said that the Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan was badly negotiated. PM Modi said that it contains provisions disallowing even de-silting of dams in Kashmir.

“If you study the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, you’ll be shocked. It was decided that the dams built on the rivers of Jammu and Kashmir would not be cleaned. Desilting would not be done. The bottom gates for clearing sediments were to remain shut. For 60 years, these gates were never opened,” the Prime Minister said.

‘Nakal karne ke liye akal chahiye’: Asaduddin Owaisi’s swipe at Pakistan over fake photo of ‘Operation Bunyan’

May 27, 2025

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi took a swipe at Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, over a fake image of ‘Operation Bunyan’, stating that “nakal karne ke liye akal chahiye” (it requires brains to imitate well).

He cautioned against believing anything that Pakistan says, “not even with a pinch of salt”.

“Yesterday, the Pakistani Army chief gifted a photo to the Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif…these stupid jokers want to compete with India, they had given a photograph of a 2019 Chinese Army drill claiming it is a victory over India. This is what Pakistan indulges in…’Nakal karne ke liye akal chahiye…inke pass akal bhi nahi hai‘…whatever Pakistan is saying, do not take even with a pinch of salt,” Owaisi said while speaking to the Indian diaspora in Kuwait.

The Pakistani Army chief presented a framed photograph to Sharif, falsely claiming that it showcased Islamabad’s victory over India. However, the image was actually of a 2019 Chinese Army drill.

The AIMIM chief further called for Pakistan’s re-inclusion on the FATF grey list, criticising the country’s involvement in the barbaric April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where terrorists shot dead 26 people, mostly tourists.

He said tighter financial scrutiny against Pakistan was the need of the hour as it would be expending the $2 billion IMF loan to strengthen its military and terror groups.

“Pakistan must be brought back on the FATF grey list. The importance of the FATF grey list is that there will be huge scrutiny on that nation when you do money transactions,” Owaisi said.

“It is a fact that Pakistan uses the Middle East hawala or money laundering to sponsor terror groups against India…bringing Pakistan in FATF is very important because…the 2 billion loan which the IMF is giving will be used by the Pakistani military,” he added.

Pakistan’s misinformation campaign

During the conflict, Pakistan tried to spread bogus claims like the destruction of India’s S-400 air defence system, which was rebuffed by Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.

“Pakistan has also attempted to execute a continued malicious misinformation campaign, with claims of destruction of the Indian S-400 system, destruction of airfields at Surat and Sirsa… India unequivocally rejects these false claims being spread by Pakistan,” Singh had said during an Operation Sindoor press briefing.

Prashant Kishor calls for Hindu-Muslim alliance to counter BJP’s dominance

Imran Mojib

May 26, 2025

Jan Suraaj party founder Prashant Kishor has urged people who believe in the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr BR Ambedkar, Ram Manohar Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan to come together and join the fight against the BJP.

Prashant Kishor, who is on a state-wide ‘Bihar Badlaav Yatra,’ said that Jan Suraaj party’s fight with the BJP is based on ideology. Photos of Gandhi and Ambedkar on the party flag emphasises the necessity of people who believe in these two leaders to come together to defeat the BJP.

He asserted that the BJP has been winning elections by polarising the society claiming that it represents 80 per cent Hindus in the country, despite the fact that it has never got more than 40 per cent votes.

He pointed out that the 40 per cent Hindus who did not vote for the BJP include people who believe in the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr BR Ambedkar, Ram Manohar Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan.

Kishor said, “The BJP got about 40 per cent votes in the country while the population of Hindus in the country is 80 per cent. This means that the remaining 40 per cent Hindus did not vote for the BJP. We want to bring together those 40 per cent Hindus who voted against the BJP and the Muslim community together and create a political and social alliance so that we can challenge the BJP.”

The political-strategist-turned politician said that he has helped politicians in about a dozen states return to power. However, when he realised that they had all failed to deliver on their promises, he left the profession and launched the campaign to bring about political and systemic change in Bihar.

He said, “I travelled across Bihar and interacted with people belonging to various strata of life. Everyone agreed that the people of Bihar, the state with the most glorious past in the country, have faced humiliation across the country.”

He added, “We launched the Jan Suraaj party because Bihar needs better education and employment. It does not need trains to transport labourers. Together we can do something different. Let us walk on the path of change towards a new Bihar.”

Sessions court stays order to demolish Sanjauli mosque

May 27, 2025

A sessions court on Monday stayed the May 3 order of the municipal corporation commissioner’s court that directed the demolition of a mosque in Sanjauli locality in Shimla. The demolition order came as the waqf board had failed to provide the records regarding the ownership of the land.

The court also sought a reply from the Shimla municipal corporation (MC) on the plea by the Himachal Pradesh Waqf Board challenging the decision of the commissioner’s court.

The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for May 29.

Meanwhile, Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, which had filed a caveat petition in the case, withdrew the petition.

A section of residents of Sanjauli and Hindu outfits had launched an agitation last year to press for the demolition of the mosque, claiming that it was unauthorised but no action was taken by the corporation during the past 15 years.

In October last year, the commissioner’s court had directed the Sanjauli Mosque Committee and the waqf board to raze the top three floors of the five-storey mosque after they were found to be illegal.

On May 3, the commissioner’s court directed the Sanjauli Mosque Committee and the waqf board to demolish the remaining two floors of the mosque also after the board failed to provide the records regarding the ownership of the land on which the mosque was constructed.

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 26.? Islamophobia is increasingly evident in France’s domestic politics, said Jean-Michel Brun, founder and editor-in-chief of the French news portal Musulmans en France, editor-in-chief of La Gazette du Caucase, at an international conference on "Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas" in Baku, Trend reports.

“Today, France holds a prominent position in the Islamophobic space. Some non-governmental organizations consider it one of the most racist countries globally, exerting a harmful influence especially on neighboring states by spreading a kind of ‘contagion’ of Islamophobia. This phenomenon is manifested through the stigmatization of French citizens who practice Islam or are simply perceived as Muslims,” he stated.

Brun also pointed out that Islamophobia casts a long shadow over France’s foreign policy, throwing a wrench in the works of relations with Muslim-majority countries like Tunisia, Algeria, and Azerbaijan.

“This rhetoric spreads and becomes normalized primarily through media and social networks, whose algorithms fuel and amplify an atmosphere of hatred. Politicians, caught in a vicious circle, seek to conform to this ‘public opinion’—which’ they derive from social media,” he added. According to a recent parliamentary report, mainstream media often present Islam through a secular lens that portrays it mainly as a threat," he added.

The expert took the French media to task for painting the liberation of Karabakh as a case of a Muslim country throwing the first punch against Christian territories.

“One of the most insidious forms of racism is denying the very existence of racism. In France, the word ‘islamophobia’ is rejected by most politicians,” he said.

Brun also warned that mentioning Islamophobia can lead to criminal prosecution for “justifying terrorism.”

"There is a false narrative that the term 'Islamophobia’ was invented to silence criticism of religion; it describes systematic hostility towards Islam or Muslims, which has become a serious social problem in France," the official said.

Brun points out that institutional Islamophobia is as plain as day in the glaring absence of Muslims in public discourse. Though Islam often takes center stage in news programs and debates, the genuine voices of Muslims are rarely given a fair shake.

“Television networks tend to invite openly Islamophobic commentators rather than genuine scholars, researchers, or experts who could offer a humane and balanced portrayal of Islam aligned with Arab values. Naturally, this runs counter to the narrative perpetuated by institutionalized Islamophobia,” the editor-in-chief concluded .

Council of muftis to discuss demolition of historic Chechen mosque in Daghestan

by Elizaveta Chukharova

26 May 2025

The Mufti of Chechnya and head of the Coordination Centre of Muslims of the North Caucasus, Salah Mezhiev, has said in a video message that the demolition of a historic Chechen mosque in the village of Leninaul in northwestern Daghestan was carried out in violation of an order by Daghestan’s Mufti.

According to him, on 6 May, a delegation from Chechnya visited the Mufti of Daghestan, Akhmed Abdulaev, during which they received guarantees that a 19th century Chechen mosque in the village of Leninaul in Daghestan’s Kazbekovksy District would not be torn down.

Two days later, the mosque was demolished, sparking controversy about the authorities’ handling of Chechen cultural heritage in areas historically inhabited by Chechens in Daghestan before their deportation by the Soviet Union.

‘This is unacceptable,’ Mezhiev said in a video published on 23 May .‘The people who did this disobeyed, firstly, the Mufti of Daghestan’.

Mezhiev added that the matter would be discussed with the involvement of Islamic scholars from the republics of the North Caucasus after the completion of Hajj.

‘This investigation will not be solely between the Islamic scholars of Daghestan and Chechnya. Other scholars from all the religious administrations of the North Caucasus will also be present’, he said.

The Daghestani Muftiate has yet to issue official comments on the demolition of the mosque.

Following the demolition, the residents of Leninaul published a video message claiming that the mosque was demolished despite previously reached agreements with the authorities.

The plot of land on which the mosque stood was reportedly put up for auction, acquired by a representative of the Avar community, a Daghestani ethnic group, and subsequently handed over for the construction of a new mosque. According to the administration of the Kazbekovsky District, no documents confirming the ownership of the land by Chechens were found in the archives.

In his video statement, Mezhiev noted that the investigation would not only concern the demolition of the mosque but also the broader issue of restoring the rights of the Chechens who had lived in the Aukh District of Daghestan.

The district was abolished in 1944 following the Stalinist deportation of the Chechens and Ingush. On its territory, the Soviet authorities created the Novolaksky District, which was settled by Laks, a Daghestani ethnic group, while the Kazbekovsky District was settled by Avars. Chechens and Ingush were allowed to return to their historic homelands in 1957, but were unable to completely resettle the Aukh district. Their right of return has been a prominent issue since.

On 23 February 2025, on the 81st anniversary of the beginning of the Stalinist deportation of the Chechens and Ingush, a mourning rally was held in the village of Novokuli in the Novolaksky District, attended by over 500 people.

That same day, Chechen Prime Minister Magomed Daudov, at a rally in Grozny, demanded the return of housing in the former Aukh District of Daghestan to the descendants of those repressed.

‘Blessed occasion’: Celebrations as town’s new mosque officially opens its doors

Rob Goulding

26 May 2025

NORTHWICH’S Muslim community and guests celebrated the opening of a brand new mosque and community hub in the town centre.

Saturday, May 24, saw the grand opening and official inauguration of Northwich Muslim Centre, on Meadow Street.

The new centre replaces a previous much smaller place of worship for the town’s Muslim community on Church Road, which it has occupied since 2012.

This was in a small terraced house and had both capacity and access issues.

From 2006 to 2012, worshippers in the town used to hire a room at Memorial Court for two hours every Friday for prayers.

The new Meadow Street mosque, housed in a former Citizens Advice Bureau building, is large enough both to accommodate hundreds of worshippers, and provide a focus for a wide range of community, social, educational, and spiritual activities.

Saturday's opening ceremony was attended by Mid Cheshire MP, Andrew Cooper; Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Sherin Akhtar; the Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Mo Hussain; Witton ward’s Cllr Sam Naylor; and vicar of St Helens Church, Rev Andrew Ridley.

This was followed by speeches and a tour of the new mosque, then food courtesy of Northwich’s award-winning Indian restaurant, Bombay Quay.

Honoured with giving the opening address, Dr El-Khiar Belayat, an architect and Muslim community member who played an important role in delivering the project, said: “It is with great joy I welcome you all to the official inauguration of the new Northwich Muslim Centre.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey, a day which represents growth, unity, a renewed commitment to the wellbeing of our community.

“I would like to take a moment to thanks all the individuals and teams who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this project a reality.

“Their hard work, dedication, and belief in this project have brought us to this proud moment.

Members of Northwich's Muslim community at the new centre's opening (Image: Moshin Ahmed) “As we cut the ribbon today, let it be more than a symbolic act.

"Let it be a promise to use this space to its full potential, to keep fostering community spirit, and to continue building a future we can all be proud of.

“Here’s to a new chapter for Northwich. We are stronger together.”

Another community member, Atif Ahmed, called it a ‘truly momentous occasion’, and thanked the assembled dignitaries for attending.

He said: “Their support and solidarity means the world to us, and underscores the spirit of unity and cooperation in our beloved town.

“This masjid is for all of us. It is a beacon of light and a place of peace, learning, and community for every generation.

“We especially encourage our youth to make this their second home; a place where they can grow, learn, and contribute.

“This is more than just a building. It is a hub for spiritual growth, a centre for education, a place for social gathering, and community support.

“We warmly invite everyone to join us on this blessed and special occasion and make it unforgettable."

Churchill photo thief sentenced to two years in jail

27 May 2025

A Canadian man has been sentenced to almost two years in prison for stealing a famous photograph of Sir Winston Churchill known as "The Roaring Lion".

Jeffrey Wood had pleaded guilty to stealing the original print from Ottawa's Château Laurier hotel between Christmas 2021 and early January 2022. He also admitted committing forgery.

The photo of Britain's war-time prime minister, taken by Yousuf Karsh in 1941, features on the UK £5 note.

Ottawa Police said it was found last year in Genoa, Italy in the possession of a private buyer, who was unaware it was stolen.

The image depicts a frowning Churchill, who was 67 at the time, shortly after he delivered a speech to the Canadian parliament.

It wasn't until August 2022 that a hotel staff member realised the original photo had been replaced with a fake.

According to Canadian media, Wood said he took the photo to find money for his brother, who was suffering from mental health problems.

During sentencing, Justice Robert Wadden said: "It is a point of national pride that a portrait taken by a Canadian photographer would have achieved such fame."

"There is an element of trust in our society that allows such properties to be displayed, to be enjoyed by all Canadians. To steal, damage and traffic in such property is to breach that trust," he added.

"We're very happy to see that Canadian history is recognised," said Geneviève Dumas, the general manager of the Château Laurier hotel, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Wood was sentenced to "two years less a day", a distinction which means he will serve his sentence in a provincial institution instead of a federal prison.

The lawyer representing Wood said the sentence was "unnecessarily harsh" given that he was a first-time offender.

Austria's ex-chancellor has conviction quashed

27 May 2025

Austria's former chancellor Sebastian Kurz has won his appeal against a conviction for giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee.

The court's ruling overturns last year's judgement and eight-month suspended prison sentence for the former political star.

Once hailed a wunderkind of Europe's conservatives, the 38-year-old resigned as chancellor in 2021 and quit politics amid a series of allegations.

Monday's acquittal removes a key obstacle to a potential political comeback, but he still faces investigation on separate corruption allegations.

Last year, Kurz was found guilty of perjury for giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee.

The case against him centred over allegations that he had been involved in the selection of executives on a newly-created state holding company when he was chancellor, as opposed to being merely kept informed.

Kurz told a parliamentary probe in 2020 that he was "involved in the sense of informed". But the first trial judge deemed that declaration false and ruled that Kurz had played a more active role.

However in his appeal Kurz argued that the judge who had convicted him was biased.

The appeal bench of three judges ruled in his favour on Monday, reading out in their judgement that Kurz "was acquitted because the objective offence of giving false evidence was not fulfilled".

Speaking to reporters outside court on Monday, Kurz said the years of accusations against him had "now all collapsed".

"There have been numerous court hearings - a huge amount of confrontation with these accusations. You have all witnessed how much this has been celebrated and that it has now all collapsed," he said.

He has also denied wrongdoing on the corruption allegations for which he is being investigated.

Prosecutors are yet to decide whether to charge him over the allegations that he used public money to pay for favourable media coverage and to fund polls which exaggerated support for him.

Kurz has not publicly voiced an intention to return to politics yet.

Since quitting in 2021, he has been involved in several business ventures including the high-profile Dream cybsersecurity company, which he co-founded in 2023 with partners including the former boss of Israel's NSO firm that developed the controversial Pegasus spyware product.

Kurz had previously headed the conservative Austrian's People's Party, leading the party to victories in 2017 and 2019 on a hardline immigration stance.

The People's Party is still in charge in Austria after it managed to form a three-party coalition with the Social Democrats and a liberal party after elections last September.

However that vote was won by the far-right Freedom Party, who seized on voter frustrations on the economy and migration. Despite topping parliamentary elections for the first time, they failed to form government.

CAIR Condemns Israel’s ‘Barbaric’ Murder of Red Cross Workers, Slaughter of 36 – Including 18 Children – at School Shelter

May 26, 2025

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/26/2025) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the Israeli government’s “barbaric” assassination of two Red Cross workers and a separate bombing of a school shelter that killed at least 36 displaced people, including 18 children.

SEE: Israeli strikes kill 52 in Gaza including 36 in a school-turned-shelter, medics say – AP

Washington, D.C., based CAIR’s condemnations come as Israelis marched through Muslim neighborhoods of Jerusalem’s Old City shouting “death to Arabs” and Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says he now believes his country’s actions in Gaza are “war crimes.” He admitted, “What we are doing in Gaza is a war of extermination: indiscriminate, unrestrained, brutal, and criminal killing of civilians.” A leaked recording also revealed racist, anti-Arab remarks made by the newly-appointed head of Israel’s internal security agency.

Israel has slaughtered almost 54,000 people in Gaza – mostly women and children – including more than 200 journalists and more than 2,220 families.

SEE: ‘They want to erase us’: Israel wipes out over 2,200 Palestinian families in Gaza

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“How many more children, women, the elderly, journalists, health care workers, and first responders must Benjamin Netanyahu slaughter with American weapons before President Trump forces him to accept a permanent ceasefire deal that ends the genocide for good and frees all captives? Every hour that Israel’s genocidal crimes continue with impunity – and with our government’s complicity – adds more dishonor to a shameful period in the history of our nation and the world.”

Yesterday, CAIR reiterated its call for U.S. and world media professionals to defend their colleagues in Gaza after Israel murdered another Palestinian journalist.

CAIR also condemned the Israeli government’s bombing of a Gaza doctor’s home, burning nine of her 10 children to death while she worked at a hospital, as “pure evil.”

On Friday, CAIR condemned the Israeli government’s mass slaughter of civilians in the bombing of a residential building in Gaza.

DOJ investigates proposed Muslim development in Texas

May 26, 2025

The proposed development of a Texas mosque has been the focus of criticism from almost every high-profile Republican in the state, including Attorney General Ken Paxton and Gov. Greg Abbot.

The U.S. Department of Justice is opening an investigation into the proposed housing development, known as EPIC — East Plano Islamic Center — that would be located in unincorporated Collin and Hunt counties.

Last week, Sen. John Cornyn asked the DOJ to investigate potential “religious discrimination.” Nothing about the development has been approved – it’s all been proposed so far and it is already drawing so much controversy.

CAIR-Austin, Vandalized Mosques to Hold a Press Conference, Public Community Gathering

May 26, 2025

On Tuesday, May 27, the Austin chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Austin), along with representatives of the three vandalized mosques, plan to hold a news conference condemning the hateful actions against the houses of worship and inviting public for a community gathering of solidarity and mutual respect on Thursday at the Nueces mosque.

On May 22, Nueces mosque that mainly serves UT Austin students, the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association, and Austin Diyanet Center experienced coward vandalism over the night. Security videos show a white male covering his face spray-painting the entrance doors, fences, gates, and billboards.

“Hate and prejudice often stem from isolation and misinformation. Acts of vandalism against houses of worship are not only attacks on physical spaces but also on the values of tolerance, diversity, and mutual respect. On behalf of the Austin Muslim community, we warmly invite all Austinites—of all faiths and no faith—to attend the upcoming community gathering at Nueces mosque this Thursday. In addition, we call upon the Austin community to contribute to the fundraiser campaign in support of the affected mosques as they work to address their urgent security needs. Together, we can reaffirm our shared commitment to a safe and inclusive Austin for all.”

NUECES MOSQUE COMMUNITY GATHERING:

Thursday, May 29th, 6:00-8:00 PM CT, 1906 Nueces St, Austin, TX 78705. Refreshments and coffee will be provided. Join us to help clean and beautify the students’ mosque following the vandalism.

Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report “Unconstitutional Crackdowns,” which reveals that Islamophobia continues to be at an all-time high across the country. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 closes in Jeddah, cements role as global cultural platform

May 26, 2025

JEDDAH — The second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale, titled And All That Is In Between, concluded on May 25, 2025, after a four-month run at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, affirming its position as a leading global platform for Islamic arts.

Organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, the Biennale brought together over 500 historical and contemporary works across five exhibition halls and expansive outdoor spaces spanning more than 100,000 square meters.

With participation from 30 international institutions representing 21 countries, and featuring 29 new commissions, the event offered a rich exploration of Islamic culture through faith, time, and material heritage.

One of the most notable highlights was the first-ever public display outside Makkah of the complete Kiswah, the cloth that covers the Holy Kaaba, shown alongside rare sacred artifacts from Makkah and Madinah.

The contemporary section, curated by Muhannad Shono, included standout works such as the AlMusalla Prize–winning structure by EAST Architecture Studio, made from palm fiber and partially featured in Venice as part of the Rooted Transience exhibition.

The Biennale’s closing symposium was marked by the announcement of several forward-looking initiatives by Rakan Altouq, Vice Chairman of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation and Assistant Minister of Culture. These include grants for joint research, a digitization platform to archive the exhibition’s works, and international conferences aimed at expanding knowledge-sharing on Islamic arts.

The Biennale also had a significant community and educational impact, with over 23,110 students visiting and more than 15,000 participants engaging in 446 public programs, including guided tours, symposia, and hands-on workshops. Notable cultural initiatives included Turuq, a culinary and cultural exploration of movement and trade, and MADE., a design forum connecting global creatives with Islamic traditions.

Aya Al-Bakree, CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, praised the collaborative spirit behind the Biennale’s success. “The second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale has surpassed expectations in its scale and impact. Mexican artist displays Saudi and Mexican culture in ‘Tiny Homes’

LAMA ALHAMAWI

May 26, 2025

RIYADH: Mexican artist Erika Place has been living in Riyadh for 14 years and through her work highlights key elements of Saudi and Mexican culture.

In her pieces created using recycled materials, Place combines key elements of both cultures including Mexican-inspired colors, architecture and major Saudi landmarks such as the Kingdom and Faisaliah towers.

“It is in Saudi Arabia that I got inspired,” Place told Arab News at her recent exhibition “Tiny Homes,” hosted at the Mexican ambassador’s residence in Riyadh.

“I have been here 14 years and I consider this place my home, and I feel at home. I do miss Mexico but I don’t feel that I am not home here,” she said.

Born in Guadalajara, Place moved to Europe at a young age. She always had a passion for art but never realized her talents until later in life when she moved to Saudi Arabia with her husband in 2012.

In the Kingdom Place’s artistic vision was realised, and she began to draw inspiration from the country’s landscapes, architecture and people.

“I made this my home and the experience has been beautiful,” she told Arab News.

Mexico’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Anibal Gomez-Toledo, hosted the exhibition and gave his perspective on Place’s art.

“She is a self-taught artist, and what she has been doing is incredible. After many years of practice and discipline, the outcome is noteworthy,” Gomez-Toledo said.

In her art, Place takes discarded small boxes and turns them into tiny homes and tiny villages, repurposing materials that would have otherwise end up in a landfill.

Place believes that this is her way to help the environment, by reducing waste and giving new purpose to products that can still be useful.

She takes these recycled materials, paints them, and gives them a new life that reflects Saudi landscapes and culture through the bright and vibrant colors of Mexico.

“For me the Mexican touch is the colors. In Mexico, we have colors everywhere, the Mexican touch is putting colors in my paintings,” Place said.

During his remarks, the Gomez-Toledo said: “Generally speaking, after using something, you throw it away and forget about it. However, can you imagine how many tonnes of waste there are worldwide?”

Gomez-Toledo underlined that, according to the World Bank, as of 2020 there were 2.24 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste generated annually and that by 2050, global waste generation is expected to reach 3.4 billion tonnes a year.

“The global production of paper and cardboard waste is over 400 million tonnes annually, paper and cardboard are the materials Erika has used to create tiny homes,” he said.

In her works, Place also depicts scenes of Saudi life, portraying people dressed in traditional thobes and abayas.

Through her art, Place invites visitors to explore the diversity of Saudi Arabia through the tiny cardboard homes she creates.

Al-Dossary: Saudi Arabia won’t allow violators to disrupt the comfort of pilgrims

May 27, 2025

RIYADH — Minister of Media Salman Al-Dossary said that the Kingdom won’t tolerate any unauthorized pilgrims disrupting the comfort of other pilgrims, and that the "No Hajj without a permit" campaign will be intensified.

He made the remarks while addressing a joint government press conference to explain the elaborate Hajj preparations in Riyadh on Monday. It was also attended by Minister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, Minister of Transport and Logistics Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, and Minister of Health Fahd Al-Jalajel.

Al-Dossary said that Saudi Vision 2030 is based on three detailed objectives to serve the guests of God: facilitating the hosting of more pilgrims and access to the Two Holy Mosques; providing high-quality services to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims; and enriching religious and cultural experience of the pilgrims.

The minister pointed out that the royal directives have been issued to host 1,000 pilgrims from the families of martyrs in Palestine and 1,300 pilgrims from 100 countries under the "Guests of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques" program, which is organized by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance.

Regarding preparations, Al-Dossary stated that the Ministry of Interior is fulfilling its role in the security and organizational arena through the "No Hajj without a permit" campaign, to preserve the sanctity of the site and ensure the safety of pilgrims in addition to enable them to perform the rituals in an orderly and peaceful environment.

He stated that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs has prepared approximately 25,000 mosques and prayer halls in Makkah and Madinah, along the roads leading to Hajj, land entry points, the holy sites, and neighborhood mosques. It has also secured the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' gift of 2.5 million copies of the Holy Qur’an, which will be distributed at land, sea, and air ports. Approximately 1.3 million identification cards containing QR codes for the electronic library have also been distributed.

Regarding volunteers, the minister indicated that the target for this year is 25,000 male and female volunteers, through the efforts of the National Center for Non-Profit Sector Development. Regarding water services, the system produces and transports more than 1.2 million cubic meters of water daily to meet peak demand during the Hajj season.

The transportation networks extend over 1,300 kilometers. The water system also conducts more than 4,000 laboratory tests daily to ensure water quality and safety, with a staff of more than 2,000 specialized Saudi technicians and engineers working around the clock.

Al-Dossary said that the Ministry of Commerce has intensified its inspection of markets and vital facilities in Makkah and Medina through more than 11,000 field visits to ensure the compliance of facilities and the availability of food supplies for pilgrims.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Municipality and Housing has mobilized more than 22,000 personnel along with 980 vehicles, and 177 shelters.

The conference coincided with the approaching countdown to the Hajj season, as pilgrims continue to flock to the Holy Capital from all corners of the globe to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.

Suspected Suicide Bomber Killed In Abuja

May 26, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

An explosive device, suspected to be a bomb, has resulted in the death of one person and left another injured in Abuja on Monday.

The blast occurred near the Mogadishu Barracks, a key military area in the Federal Capital Territory.

An eyewitness, a military personnel who wished to remain anonymous, spoke with AIT at the scene, explaining that the individual believed to be a suicide bomber was killed by an explosive device contained in a rubber can.

The incident occurred close to the barracks, causing immediate concern among onlookers and authorities.

However, military officials present at the scene downplayed the possibility of an improvised explosive device (IED), suggesting instead that the situation could involve a phone device-triggered explosion.

As of the latest reports, a joint response team from the military, Department of State Services (DSS), police, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are on-site, trying to assess the situation and gather information.

In an unusual move, media personnel were denied permission to capture photos or videos of the scene, limiting public access to firsthand visual information.

In other news, a group of heavily armed kidnappers reportedly invaded the Grow Homes estate located in the Chikakore area of Kubwa, Abuja’s largest suburban town, on Monday morning, taking residents hostage for more than an hour.

Naija News understands that the incident occurred between 12:00 AM and 1:30 AM.

One of the frightened residents, who reported witnessing a man and a woman being taken by the kidnappers, stated that by daybreak, the woman was discovered within the estate, having been released by her captors for reasons that remain unclear.

FG engaging Saudi for barring me from Hajj – Gumi

27th May 2025

Nathaniel Shaibu

Saudi Arabian authorities have barred Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi, from performing the 2025 Hajj exercise.

In a post on his Facebook page on Monday, the cleric confirmed that he had returned to the country, adding that the Saudi authorities were “uncomfortable” with his presence in the Holy Land, despite having issued him a visa.

He further disclosed that the Nigerian authorities had pledged to immediately take up the issues with the Saudi authorities, while calling for prayers for the safe return of other pilgrims and the peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

His post read: “Alhamdullilahi I’ve already completed my Hajj 2025 and I’m at home in our beloved country Nigeria. Allah said in Q2/196: ‘And accomplish the Hajj i.e. pilgrimage and the Umra for Allah, but if you are prevented, (slaughter) the offering available with you (meaning, you are then free from Hajj or Umra).’

“For some obvious reasons, my views about world politics, the Saudi authorities are uncomfortable about my presence in the Hajj after giving me the Hajj visa. Thanks to the Nigerian authorities, who have pledged to take up the matter immediately with the Saudi authorities. That is the value of our cherished freedom and democracy.

“I’m now free to attend to my health and farming activities. We should continue to pray for the safe return of all pilgrims, peace and prosperity for our dear nation.”

Gumi is known for his vocal and controversial defence of bandits, wreaking havoc in the North-East.

He wants the government to stop killing the bandits but to rather pardon and resettle them.

His calls have often been criticised and opposed.

Efforts by our correspondent to get further details from him on his Saudi Arabia experience proved abortive as his phone was switched.

Similarly, the Assistant Director for Information and Publication at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Fatima Sanda Usara, could also not be reached as her phone was also switched off.

Herdsmen Kill 42 In Benue, Including Police Officer

May 27, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

At least 42 people, including a Mobile Police Officer, have been killed by herdsmen in multiple attacks on four communities in the Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.

Naija News reports that several others have sustained injuries in the violence, which has rocked the region since the weekend.

The herders’ attacks started on Saturday evening, around 5:00 p.m., in Aondona town and continued through to Ahume, Tse-Orbiam, and the Military Base at Tse-Orbiam early on Sunday morning.

A resident, Agatha, who spoke with the Daily Sun, revealed the horrific scale of the violence. “The herders attacked Ahume and Aondona communities and killed many women and children, some of the children were as young as two years old. They killed over 20 people in Aondona, including a Mobile policeman,” she said.

She continued, “People are being killed every day. Villagers have deserted the area, and there’s no way to pass through Naka road.”

Another source, Terser Tyona, reported a “killing spree” throughout the weekend, stating, “10 people were killed in Ahume, five in Tyolaha, and seven others in Tse-Orbiam.”

The violence extended to a priest, Rev. Fr. Solomon Atongo, who was shot on Sunday along the Naka-Makurdi road. Additionally, two individuals were abducted near the military base in the area.

The Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Victor Ormin, confirmed the killings, calling the situation “genocide.” “Yes, it happened, and it is still happening. It’s a pathetic situation. As we speak, we are still recovering bodies. Over 30 dead bodies have been recovered between yesterday (Sunday) and today (Monday),” Ormin stated.

He provided further details of the attacks, saying, “The attack in Aondona happened around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday to dawn, and the one in Ahume was around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday. On Saturday, Tse-Orbiam was attacked, just beside the military checkpoint, only about three kilometers from Naka.”

Ormin continued, “I buried five people yesterday, and five others were taken to the mortuary on Saturday. Now, we are talking about 40 or more people killed. This is genocide.”

Military Response Hampered By Lack Of Orders

The Gwer West Chairman revealed his frustration with the military’s response, saying, “I have been told by the military that they don’t have the mandate to act on the situation. They said they can only engage these people if they fire at them, and that even the governor doesn’t have the authority to order them to act—only the President can give such orders.”

While acknowledging the soldiers’ competence, Ormin noted that they were waiting for directives before taking action. “We are not saying that the military is incompetent. The soldiers are waiting for the orders and mandate to act, which they have not yet received,” he explained.

In an emotional video that has gone viral on social media, Ormin threatened to resign if urgent help was not provided to secure his people.

“So my people should be killed, and they should all die before the federal government would do something?” he asked, visibly distressed.

Ormin recalled burying a father and two of his children aged between 40 and 50 in Tse-Orbiam, expressing his growing despair.

“If they cannot help me, maybe I will leave this chairmanship position and let it continue the way it is. I don’t care about being a chairman of a people that are all killed. This is getting too much for me to condone,” he said.

Islamic Jihad: Ben-Gvir's Desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque Insult to Arab & Islamic Nation

27 May 2025

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine considered the dangerous Zionist escalation witnessed at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque a blatant provocation of the feelings of Muslims around the world.

The movement said in a statement that the escalation, accompanied by the desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque courtyards by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and the performance of Talmudic prayers, accompanied by hundreds of settlers under heavy protection from enemy forces, constitutes a violation of the religious sanctity of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.

OIC condemns extremist Ben Gvir’s storming Al-Aqsa Mosque

26 May 2025

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the storming of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque by the extremist minister in the Israeli enemy government, Itamar Ben Gvir, along with groups of settlers, violating its sanctity under the protection of the occupation forces.

The OIC considered this a deliberate escalation in provocative practices against the feelings of all Muslims and a blatant violation of relevant United Nations resolutions, which affirm that the Israeli enemy has no sovereignty over the city of Al-Quds and its holy sites.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, the OIC reaffirmed that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif, in its entirety, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims. At the same time, it called on the international community to put an end to these serious and repeated violations of the sanctity of holy sites in occupied Quds , to preserve their historical and legal status quo.

PFLP: War criminal Ben-Gvir's storming of al-Aqsa mosque dangerous escalation of comprehensive Judaization

26 May 2025

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) on Monday considered the storming of al-Aqsa Mosque compound by the fascist and racist Zionist war criminal Minister Ben-Gvir, accompanied by groups of settler gangs, on Monday morning a dangerous escalation.

The PFLP said in a statement that this escalation represents a new episode in the series of organized aggression against al-Aqsa Mosque and holy sites, as part of the program of the most extremist and fascist Zionist enemy government in the history of the entity.

It indicated that the criminal enemy government seeks to move from temporal and spatial division to imposing complete control over al-Aqsa Mosque, in preparation for its comprehensive Judaization.

It noted that this step, carried out with clear complicity from the US administration, expresses direct partnership in the aggression, confirmed by the position and behavior of the US ambassador to the entity.

The Popular Front stated that what is happening in al-Quds, in parallel with the daily massacres, genocide, and starvation in Gaza and the West Bank, confirms that the Palestinian people are facing a comprehensive war targeting their existence, rights, and holy sites.

It emphasized that all of this calls for the broadest popular and national mobilization in al-Quds, the West Bank, and the occupied territories, intensifying the presence and mobilization in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the streets of the city, and confronting the Zionist enemy's attempts to impose new facts on the ground.

The PFLP issued a call to the masses of the Arab and Islamic nation to take immediate and effective action in support of al-Quds and Gaza, and their holy sites, which are being violated in full view of the world.

It emphasized that al-Quds is a symbol and sanctity for the entire Arab and Islamic nation, and its spiritual and historical status must awaken all forms of anger and action among the peoples of the nation, considering that defending it is a collective responsibility that does not tolerate inaction or silence, according to the statement.

Jordan, Norway urge immediate ceasefire and renew push for two-state solution

May 26, 2025

AMMAN: Jordan’s King Abdullah II met Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide in Amman on Monday, with the two sides calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and renewed efforts toward a two-state solution.

The meeting was also attended by Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, the Jordan News Agency reported.

King Abdullah highlighted the need to end the war on Gaza, ensure the sustained delivery of humanitarian aid, and work toward a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state framework.

Discussions also covered rising tensions in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, as well as developments in the Syrian Arab Republic.

In a separate meeting, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Eide stressed the urgency of ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, warning that failure to act risks further destabilizing the region.

Both ministers condemned Israeli military actions and settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque, calling them violations of international law.

Safadi praised Norway’s leadership in supporting Palestinian statehood and economic development, particularly through its role in the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee.

He also welcomed Norway’s stance at the recent Madrid Group meeting, where it reaffirmed support for a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The two ministers discussed broader regional issues, including the need for a political resolution in Syria, and voiced support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ UN80 reform initiative aimed at strengthening global multilateralism.

At a joint press conference, Safadi condemned the use of starvation as a weapon in Gaza, calling it a “war crime,” and warned of the destabilizing impact of Israeli policies aimed at displacing Palestinians.

Eide echoed these concerns and called the situation in Gaza a stark reminder of the need to implement the two-state solution.

Both sides pledged to continue working together and with international partners to advance peace, uphold international law and support Palestinian rights.

Scuffles, insults as Israelis celebrate Jerusalem Day under shadow of Gaza war

May 26, 2025

JERUSALEM: Crowds of Israelis streamed through Jerusalem’s Old City, where some scuffled with residents and hurled insults at Palestinians, as annual celebrations of Israel’s capture of east Jerusalem took place on Monday.

Jerusalem Day, as the celebrations are known, commemorates Israeli forces taking east Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem, including the annexed Palestinian-majority east, its indivisible capital. The international community, however, does not recognize this, and Palestinians seek east Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.

Far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Monday visited the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, to mark the occasion, which was being held for a second year under the shadow of the war in Gaza.

“I ascended to the Temple Mount for Jerusalem Day, and prayed for victory in the war” and the return of hostages held in Gaza, said the national security minister, whose past visits to the site have sparked anger among Palestinians and their supporters.

The Al-Aqsa mosque is Islam’s third-holiest site and a symbol of Palestinian national identity.

The Temple Mount is Judaism’s holiest place, though Jews are forbidden from praying there.

Every year, thousands of Israeli nationalists, many of them religious Jews, march through Jerusalem and its annexed Old City, including in predominantly Palestinian neighborhoods, waving Israeli flags, dancing and sometimes accosting residents.

The route ends at the Western Wall, the last remnant of the Second Temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD, the holiest site where Jews are allowed to pray.

“After so many years that the people of Israel were not here in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel, we arrived here and conquered Jerusalem, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall,” said 21-year-old Yeshiva student Yosef Azoulai. “So we celebrate this day in which we won over all our enemies.”

Groups of Israeli youths were seen confronting Palestinian shopkeepers, passersby and schoolchildren, as well as Israeli rights activists and police, at times spitting on people, lobbing insults and trying to force their way into houses.

Some chanted “death to Arabs,” “may your village burn” and “Gaza belongs to us,” drawing the occasional uncomfortable look from families making their way to the Western Wall.

As evening settled in, large crowds had congregated to celebrate at the holy site.

Authorities sometimes order Palestinian shops in the Old City to shut, though business owners this year said they had mostly closed down out of fear of harassment.

Outside the Old City, former Knesset member Moshe Feiglin was advertising his far-right political party Identity.

“Every nation and every religion has its capital... but for some reason, all the nations want a part of our one and only holy city,” he said.

“Jerusalem belongs to the Jews and only to the Jews,” he added.

This year’s Jerusalem Day comes amid renewed calls by some Israeli right-wing figures to annex more Palestinian territory as the war in Gaza rages.

On Monday, the Israeli army said three projectiles were launched from Gaza, two falling inside the territory and one intercepted.

In 2021, Hamas launched rockets toward Jerusalem as marchers approached the Old City, sparking a 12-day war in Gaza and outbreaks of violence in Israel between Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel banned the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, from operating in east Jerusalem earlier this year over accusations it provided cover for Hamas militants, and on Monday, a group of Israelis forced their way into one its vacated compounds in the city.

“The group asserted they were ‘liberating’” the facility, UNWRA West Bank director Roland Friedrich said on X.

“The group brought flags and erected banners, seeking to claim the compound for the establishment of a new Israeli neighborhood. Israeli police, alerted to the scene, failed to protect the inviolability of the @UN premises.”

The police, who deployed in force, said that over the course of the day “officers have handled numerous cases of suspects involved in public disturbances.”

In the morning, peace activists handed out flowers to challenge what they saw as the main march’s divisive message.

Orly Likhovski of the Israel Religious Action Center said those taking part in the peace event were “not willing to accept that this day is marked by violence and racism,” adding they hoped to represent “a Jewish voice for a different kind of Jerusalem.”

Some Palestinians accepted the flowers, but one elderly man near Damascus Gate politely refused, saying: “Do you see what is happening in Gaza? I’m sorry, but I cannot accept.”

In a rare move, the Israeli cabinet met nearby in the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, home to an archaeological site known as the City of David — believed to mark the biblical location of Jerusalem.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “keep Jerusalem united, whole, and under Israeli sovereignty.”

Since June 1967, Israeli settlement in the eastern part of the city — considered illegal under international law — has expanded, drawing regular international criticism.

World Food Programme chief rejects Israeli claims of Hamas stealing aid

May 26, 2025

LONDON: UN World Food Programme chief Cindy McCain has rejected Israeli government claims that Hamas is looting aid trucks arriving in Gaza, The Independent reported.

The widow of late US Sen. John McCain has repeatedly advocated for Israel to allow more aid into the Palestinian enclave, which was placed under a months-long blockade in March.

The first aid trucks began arriving in the territory last week, but the Israeli government accused Hamas of disrupting the distribution process, claiming to have killed six people affiliated with the group near an aid point at the Kerem Shalom crossing on Friday. Hamas said the armed men were guarding against looting.

An Israeli military spokesperson told Reuters: “Hamas constantly calls the looters ‘guards’ or protectors’ to mask the fact that they’re disturbing the aid process.”

Speaking to “Face the Nation” on CBS on Sunday, McCain was asked by host Margaret Brennan: “Have you seen evidence that it is Hamas stealing the food?”

McCain replied: “No. Not at all. Not in this round. Listen, these people are desperate, and they see a World Food Programme truck coming in, and they run for it. This doesn’t have anything to do with Hamas or any kind of organized crime, or anything.”

She described the situation in Gaza as a “catastrophe,” and said the WFP would continue work urgently to transport food and fresh water into the enclave.

So far, the aid trucks that have entered Gaza are “a drop in the bucket as to what’s needed,” she told CBS.

“Right now, we have 500,000 people inside of Gaza that are extremely food insecure, and could be on the verge of famine if we don’t help bring them back from that.”

Contrary to Israeli claims that many of the aid trucks entering Gaza are being hijacked, McCain said they are being swarmed by “desperate” people. “Having been in a food riot myself some years ago, I understand the desperation,” she added.

SC acquits Jamaat leader Azharul from war crimes case

May 27, 2025

The Supreme Court today acquitted death row convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam from the charges of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

The Appellate Division of the SC scrapped its earlier judgement that upheld the conviction and death sentence given by the International Crimes Tribunal to AKM Azharul Islam in this case.

The apex court also directed the jail authorities to release Azharul from jail immediately if he is not arrested in other case.

A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed passed the order.

This is for the first time, the Appellate Division rescinded its own judgment that upheld the conviction and death sentences handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal to any person in connection with a crimes against humanity case, Barrister Mohammed Belayet Hossain, a SC lawyer who was present during delivery of the judgement, told The Daily Star.

Azaharul has got justice, his lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir told reporters after the verdict was pronounced.

Truth has been established and falsehood has been defeated, he said.

On February 27, the SC allowed Azharul to move a fresh appeal before the court challenging his death penalty.

Bagram Air base never be used against certain countries

May 27, 2025

Reports qouted a U.S. congressman as saying that Bagram was a key air base to be used against certain countries.

Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, U.S. Congressman Mike Bost, in an interview with media repeated Trump’s words describing the Bagram Airfield as the country’s “most forward air base” for countering adversaries, adding that there had been plans to keep it despite his country’s forces withdrawal from Afghanistan as he criticized the chaotic US withdrawal from the country.

Bost said that during the U.S. forces withdrawal from Afghanistan under then-President Joe Biden, the president had received advice, suggesting that the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan be retained, with approximately 3,500- 5,000 military personnel stationed there.

What is very important to say that why they are speaking about Bagram which a vital and strategic region of Afghanistan, which is now led by the Islamic Emirate. Why don’t they realize the fact that the current Islamic system differs from those of the past puppet and leased regimes that had been working for the aliens.

The Islamic Emirate is not ready to deal even a small part of the country to others and will never allow others to even speak about regaining a span of the country’s land as a launchpad against other nations. China, Russia, and other regional and world countries are now politically and economically interacting with Afghanistan under the leadership of the Islamic Emirate and so can do the U.S. It can come up with Afghanistan and engage with the Islamic Emirate based on bilateral interests, economic relations and a win/win approach in line with Islamic Sharia laws instead of resorting to erroneous and impossible ambition of invading or occupying other lands. Like other friendly nations, it can get closer to Afghanistan based mutual benefit unless it interferes militarily or politically in our internal affairs.

As per the foreign policy of the Islamic Emirate, Afghanistan will never be used against any country, nor others are allowed to use even a span of the country’s soil as proxy warfield against their rivals.

Islamic Emirate Intensifies Crackdown on Substandard Imports

2025-05-26

KABUL(BNA): The Islamic Emirate has escalated its battle against substandard and counterfeit imports, implementing sweeping reforms to purge Afghan markets of dangerous goods that have endangered public health and undermined domestic industries for years.

Following a major restructuring of the Afghan National Standards Authority, customs officials now conduct rigorous inspections at all border crossings, airports, and major marketplaces. Over the past year, authorities have intercepted and either returned or destroyed dozens of shipping containers filled with hazardous products.

The crackdown has particularly targeted three critical sectors: fraudulent pharmaceuticals, adulterated food items, and substandard construction materials. Public Health Ministry inspectors have shuttered multiple illegal drug manufacturers after conducting surprise raids across the country, while food safety teams now routinely test imported cooking oils, teas, and other staples. Construction sites face increased scrutiny to prevent the use of dangerous building materials.

“These aren’t just economic violations – they’re threats to human lives,” warned an ANSA spokesperson, citing cases where counterfeit medicines caused severe health complications. The government has mobilized religious leaders, media outlets, and trade associations to warn consumers about the dangers of substandard products. Newly established complaint centers allow citizens to report suspicious goods directly to authorities.

The campaign has yielded concrete results, with numerous importers facing heavy fines, confiscation of merchandise, or legal prosecution. Customs officials report a significant decline in substandard goods since implementing advanced inspection systems at key border crossings like Herat, Nimroz, Torkham, and Islam Qala.

While challenges persist in monitoring remote border areas, officials emphasize their commitment to sustaining what they describe as a “long-term campaign for consumer protection.” The Commerce Ministry predicts these measures will gradually create fairer market conditions for legitimate domestic producers while safeguarding public health.

The Islamic Emirate’s efforts reflect broader governance reforms aimed at combating corruption and establishing effective regulatory systems. Officials stress that continued progress will require sustained investment in inspection infrastructure, professional training for customs staff, and ongoing public awareness campaigns about product safety standards.

Make people alert to polls fraud: Yunus

May 27, 2025

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has stressed the importance of raising awareness among citizens to prevent ballot box snatching.

"People need to be made election focused. Citizens must be made aware that no one can snatch the ballot box. We must bring discipline, and we, taking the people together, must hold safe elections," he told the consensus commission meeting held last night.

"Bangladesh that we got after such a mass uprising should not remain the same Bangladesh," said Yunus, also the commission chief.

The commission members informed him about the latest progress in the talks with political parties, according to a statement of chief adviser's press wing.

The statement said discussion was held on the formation of an independent commission to investigate the role of those involved in irregularities in past elections.

Prof Ali Riaz, the commission's vice-president, said all political parties already reached a "consensus" in this regard.

The chief adviser, who presided over the meeting at Jamuna, instructed the commission to work on increasing public awareness in reform process and electoral matters by involving not only political parties but also civil society and grassroots organisations.

The first round of talks between the commission and political parties ended on May 19. The second round is expected early next month.

At the meeting, consensus commission member Ayub Mia proposed forming a body for implementing the recommendations of Public Administration Reform Commission.

He added that apart from the Public Administration Commission's recommendations, two other commissions are working on NBR reforms, leading to a lack of coordination.

Judicial Reform Commission representative Justice Emdadul Haque called upon the chief adviser to ensure that the commission formed based on the consensus of political parties to appoint Supreme Court judges can work transparently.

Anti-Corruption Reform Commission representative Iftekharuzzaman urged for a roadmap to implement the proposals put forth by the reform commissions on media, labour, local government, women, and health.

Badiul Alam Majumder, who leads the Electoral System Reform Commission, called for issuing the draft proposal prepared for the 2008 local government elections as an ordinance.

Police Reform Commission representative Safar Raj Hossain was also present at the meeting.

UN warns deported migrants face escalating humanitarian crisis

By Fidel Rahmati

May 27, 2025

The UN warns that deported migrants are facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, with urgent needs for shelter, food, and medical support.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that in April alone, approximately 280,000 Afghan migrants were expelled from neighboring countries Iran and Pakistan.

Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday, May 27, quoting UNHCR, that a worsening crisis is developing in Afghanistan as large numbers of returnees face dire circumstances.

According to the report, many returnees have lost all their possessions and now face an uncertain and dangerous future upon returning to Afghanistan.

Iran and Pakistan have hosted around 5.25 million Afghan migrants for years, but both countries are currently grappling with their own economic crises, leading to increased expulsions.

Returnees also face significant security threats and human rights violations within Afghanistan. Ethnic and religious minorities, human rights activists, and journalists are especially vulnerable to heightened threats upon their return.

UNHCR has called for urgent support, stating that $60 million is needed to provide shelter, cash assistance, healthcare, and food for returnees.

The escalating crisis underscores the urgent need for international cooperation to protect vulnerable populations and address the root causes of displacement in Afghanistan.

Without adequate aid and protection, many returnees risk falling into poverty, violence, and further displacement, deepening the humanitarian emergency in the region.

Malaysia, Indonesia to lead establishment of Asean Halal Council, says Zahid

26 May 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — Malaysia and Indonesia are set to lead the establishment of the Asean Halal Council to position the bloc as a global model for the halal industry, built on high standards and integrity, and to emerge as a competitive, inclusive and sustainable global halal hub, said Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The deputy prime minister said that with the global halal market projected to reach USD5 trillion (USD1 = RM4.22) by 2030, Asean must emerge as a leader in developing a complementary and competitive regional halal ecosystem.

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the Halal Industry Development Council of Malaysia, said both countries had agreed to jointly spearhead the formation of the Asean Halal Council this year.

“This will serve as a strategic platform to systematically align halal policies, standards and regulations among Asean countries. We are strongly committed to elevating halal cooperation to a higher level, focusing on strengthening the position of both countries’ halal products in regional and global markets.

“This collaboration will also be a testament to the success of Malaysia’s ‘Halal Diplomacy’ in strengthening the national halal brand globally,” he said in a statement following a strategic meeting with Indonesia’s head of the Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency (BPJPH), Haikal Hassan Baras, on the sidelines of the 46th Asean Summit here today.

Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia and Indonesia would intensify joint efforts in halal certification, education, research and halal workforce development.

He said Malaysia also fully supports expert exchange programmes, joint training and collaborative research to strengthen the Asean halal value chain.

Both countries also agreed to expand halal trade by easing market access for halal products and enhancing mutual recognition of halal certification.

“This move will facilitate smoother and more industry-friendly halal trade flows, while supporting the growth of intra-Asean trade. It is expected to have a positive impact on halal market demand in Asean, which comprises nearly 700 million people,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid noted that the meeting was a continuation of his recent official visit to Indonesia, which marked the beginning of deeper collaboration between the two nations in leading the development of the regional halal industry. — Bernama

Malaysia eyes role as Islamic crypto capital with KWAP’s strategic stake in Fasset

By Malay Mail

26 May 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — On the eve of the Asean-GCC Summit, Malaysia has signalled its ambition to become the world’s Islamic crypto capital, with a strategic investment in Dubai-based Islamic digital bank Fasset in the works.

Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan) [KWAP], Malaysia’s largest public sector pension fund, is in advanced talks to invest between US$12 million and US$15 million in Fasset.

The collaboration aims to place Malaysia at the forefront of ethical digital finance and frontier technology.

Fasset, the world’s first Islamic digital bank powered by blockchain and AI, is expected to relocate its Asia-Pacific headquarters to Kuala Lumpur as part of the proposed partnership.

The firm also plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for Islamic digital assets in the Malaysian capital, to boost the country’s ambitions to lead in Shariah-compliant blockchain, tokenisation, and inclusive financial infrastructure.

The investment underscores growing institutional interest in high-impact, Shariah-aligned innovation platforms with regional potential.

It aligns with KWAP’s strategy to explore private capital markets, particularly in digital finance and Islamic-compliant investments.

“This collaboration aligns with KWAP’s strategy to support the development of cutting-edge and emerging technologies, while leveraging Malaysia’s solid position as a global Islamic finance hub,” said Hazman Hilmi Sallahuddin, Chief Investment Officer of KWAP.

Fasset CEO and co-founder Mohammad Raafi Hossain said the partnership with KWAP reflects a shared long-term vision for ethical and inclusive finance.

“Together with KWAP, we are building more than just infrastructure — we are building trust, opportunity, and a stronger financial system for the world,” he said.

Malaysia’s move comes as the country intensifies its push to lead in Islamic fintech and digital infrastructure.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently pledged RM100 million towards Islamic finance innovation under the Halal Industry Master Plan 2030, underscoring the government’s commitment to digital transformation and Shariah-compliant financial leadership.

The collaboration also supports the broader national agenda to attract global technology firms with transformative visions, positioning Malaysia as a hub for sustainable digital finance across the Asean region.

Anwar: Stronger Asean-GCC ties vital amid global economic uncertainty

By Muhammad Yusry

27 May 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — At the second Asean-GCC Summit today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim underscored the importance of strengthening ties between the two blocs amid the current global economic climate.

He said the summit plays a crucial role in ensuring the partnership remains dynamic, responsive, and impactful.

“I believe the Asean-GCC partnership has never been more important than it is today, as we navigate an increasingly complex global landscape marked by economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges.

“A stronger Asean-GCC relationship will be key to enhancing inter-regional collaboration, building resilience, and securing sustainable prosperity for our peoples,” he said in his opening remarks at the summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.

“Today’s deliberations will be crucial in ensuring that our partnership remains dynamic, responsive, and impactful. Let us use today’s summit to reaffirm our collective ambition and translate our shared vision into concrete and impactful cooperation,” he added.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), established in 1981, comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the aim of fostering political and economic cooperation among member countries.

The first Asean-GCC Summit was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2023.

Anwar noted that the GCC was Asean’s seventh-largest trading partner, with total trade reaching US$130.7 billion two years ago.

“Investment is also growing, reflecting increasing confidence in the long-term prospects of our partnership,” he added.

Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said the partnership anticipates trade between the 16 countries to grow by an average of 30 per cent, reaching US$180 billion by 2026.

“The investment potential between both sides is vast, and the growth in GCC-Asean trade, which exceeded US$128 billion in 2023, along with rising Gulf investments in Asian markets, reflects mutual confidence and deepening economic integration.

“We therefore emphasise the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation in economic, trade, investment, and technical fields.

“We look forward to achieving positive outcomes in the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both sides, which will boost investment opportunities and support regional supply chains,” he said in his speech.

The Asean-GCC Summit is being held alongside the 46th Asean Summit, with Malaysia as the host nation.

Later today, it will be followed by the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Trilateral Summit.

Kuala Lumpur Declaration explained: What does Asean’s 20-year ‘2045 Vision’ promise?

By Milad Hassandarvish

27 May 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — All 10 Asean leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, yesterday signed a regional long-term vision document titled Asean 2045: Our Shared Future.

Dubbed the “Kuala Lumpur Declaration”, the document marks a significant milestone in the bloc’s ongoing journey towards deeper regional integration.

This long-term framework replaces Asean 2025: Forging Ahead Together, adopted in 2015 under Malaysia’s chairmanship.

It comprises six core documents:

The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045: Our Shared Future

Asean Community Vision (ACV) 2045 — Resilient, Innovative, Dynamic and People-Centred Asean

Asean Political-Security Community Strategic Plan

Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030

Asean Socio-Cultural Community Strategic Plan

Asean Connectivity Strategic Plan

Here’s what you need to know about Asean’s long-term direction:

What is the Kuala Lumpur Declaration?

The Kuala Lumpur Declaration is a foundational diplomatic document signed during the 46th Asean Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

It formally adopts the Asean Community Vision 2045, setting the strategic direction for the region over the next two decades.

The declaration emphasises the need for effective implementation, enhanced institutional capacity and deeper regional cooperation.

It also calls on external partners to support Asean’s long-term goals.

Above all, it reaffirms Asean’s commitment to unity, stability and sustainable development — positioning the region as a future global leader.

What is Asean 2045?

Asean 2045: Our Shared Future is a comprehensive strategic blueprint guiding the region’s growth and integration through to 2045.

Building on the Asean 2025 vision, the new framework envisions a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred Asean community, aiming to cement the region’s role as a key growth hub in the Indo-Pacific.

The vision also seeks to elevate Asean’s global standing by addressing megatrends and promoting sustainable development.

Why is Asean adopting a 20-year vision?

The two-decade outlook provides a clear and adaptive roadmap for member states to achieve common goals amid a fast-evolving global landscape.

It supports long-term strategic planning, prioritises resource allocation and enables consistent monitoring of progress.

Such a long-term framework also ensures sustainability, alignment with future developments, and a proactive response to emerging opportunities and challenges.

Key pillars of Asean Community Vision 2045

The vision is structured around four main pillars, each promoting inclusivity, resilience and regional strength:

1. Political security

Promoting peace, stability, and adherence to international law; enhancing Asean’s regional role; and safeguarding neutrality and security.

2. Economic

Positioning Asean as the world’s fourth-largest economy by advancing innovation, digital transformation, stronger supply chains and sustainable growth.

3. Socio-cultural

Fostering a cohesive and inclusive community grounded in shared identity, while championing health, social justice, gender equality, youth empowerment and cultural preservation.

4. Connectivity and institutional capacity

Boosting infrastructure and digital connectivity, strengthening urban resilience and enhancing Asean institutions for more effective governance.

What’s new in ACV 2045?

While building on past efforts, ACV 2045 introduces several forward-looking priorities:

1. Regional leadership in global affairs

Reinforcing Asean’s role in shaping regional and global discourse, upholding a rules-based international order, and strengthening Asean-led mechanisms such as the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

2. Focus on digital and green economies

Accelerating the development of digital ecosystems, cybersecurity, advanced technologies, green growth and the blue economy.

3. Greater inclusivity

Ensuring stronger representation of women, youth and marginalised communities in policymaking and connectivity initiatives.

4. Sustainability and resilience

Placing climate action, environmental protection, pandemic preparedness and supply chain resilience at the heart of the agenda.

RON95 subsidy rationalisation to begin in second half of 2025, says Amir Hamzah

26 May 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — The rationalisation of RON95 fuel subsidies will be implemented in the second half of 2025, said Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

He said the Ministry of Finance (MoF) will continue with the subsidy rationalisation process, but the current focus is on identifying the groups that will be eligible to receive subsidy.

“MoF will proceed with the subsidy rationalisation, but for now, the priority is to ensure that the right recipients are identified.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, together with the Cabinet, is discussing the eligibility threshold for Malaysians, where the qualifying level to receive subsidies will be raised,” he told media after officiating the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) International Accountants Conference 2025 here today.

In addition, he said the government is still considering the use of MyKad as a mechanism for implementing targeted RON95 subsidies.

“Every Malaysian citizen has an IC, and we have already used it under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), which has proven effective. So, for now, the MoF is tightening the system to enable its use in the adjustment of the RON95 subsidy,” he said.

Meanwhile, responding to a question on the government’s stance regarding industry players’ calls to postpone the implementation of the sales and services tax (SST), Amir Hamzah said the government is reviewing and considering feedback from stakeholders.

“The government always takes into account everyone’s views. Regarding the SST expansion we are implementing, we have discussed it with all the stakeholders, and whatever feedback we have received has been taken into consideration,” he added.
